cyclic redundancy check error on a western digital external hard drive (1tb)

Question: cyclic redundancy check error on a western digital external hard drive (1tb)

ok my hard drive goes through alot. i bring it to work and friends house but recently i pretty much filled it up to about 15 gigs from full capacity then when i was in a friends house and i tried to transfer some tv programs to catch up on but the speed was unbelievably slow. i put it down to the hard drive being so close to full so i said fine. then i brought it home and plugged it into my ps3 so i could watch some movies and i watched one movie no problem and then about half way through the second the ps3 froze but didnt crash just came out of the movie i was watching and now the read speeds are unbelievably slow and the ps3 or computer freezes while trying to read just the folder list in explorer and sometimes the crc error comes up and what i have seen on the internet that is normally to do with cds/dvds not external hard drives. anyways i bought a new 2tb hard drive and tried to copy some files over and it just seems to stall and not copy the files. i had intended copying the files then reformatting the hard drive but it seems to be something more serious than i thought. i dont know what it could be so i am looking for a different prospective. can anybody help me?

Thank you in advance for any help that you ay give.

Preferred Solution: cyclic redundancy check error on a western digital external hard drive (1tb)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My external hard drive is no longer detected by my computer. I can see it under the Disk Management, but it is Unallocated and Unknown. It also says "Not Initialized". I've read some of the suggestions in other threads and I have tried the MiniTool Partition Wizard, but it does not seem to work for me. The drive is identified as a "Bad Disk".

I lost hope of retrieving my files, so I decided to initialize the external hard drive even though I knew there was big chance I would no longer be able to retrieve my files. I just wanted to be able to use the external drive again at the very least. However, when I tried to initialize the disk, a Data Error appeared - cyclic redundancy check.

Now, I don't know what to do.. I am totally clueless at this point. I have little knowledge about these things, but people here explain things very well. Appreciate all the help I can get. I just want to be able to use the external drive again.

Thank you in advance!!!

I have an external hard drive without any important information on it that i need to keep so no need to back it up. I am able to access the drive in the computer and read all the files but i can't delete them or move them or anything. I have tried deleting the volume in partition manager, i have tried through command prompt running chkdsk /f/r that get's stuck and 16 percent and then just stops. I ran malwarbites antimalware on it and it turned up three programs. I tried deleting with the program but just turned up again after I refreshed the hard drive. I assume that the malware did something to it. (I am not the original owner of the hard drive) I am wondering if this is just a dead drive and i can't do anything about it? it is also missing some space on the hard drive. it is a twelve gig hard drive and is missing .8 gigs according to windows. Thank you ahead of time for any help you can provide.

This topic has probably been brought up many times before, but has there ever been a fix for the common copying error, "Data Error: Cyclic Redundancy Check"?

I know there can be many variations of the problem depending on where the data is being copied from and to, but I seem to have have found where the source of my problem is. I have been copying files (copy and paste) from 2 different makes of DVD onto my computer's main hard drive. The makes of DVD are both TDK DVD-R: an older style make with darker blue labels on the disks, and the current make of TDK DVD-R which has light blue labels.

Every time I copy files from the older style DVDs, I get the "Data Error: Cyclic Redundancy Check" notice which stops me from copying any more files from the disc. However, when I copy files from the current make of TDK DVD-R disks, all files are copied without any problems.

Is there a solution to this problem? Can the data from the older style of disks still be copied somehow? I find it strange how the error appears when copying from one make of disk, and doesn't appear when copying from the other. Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer:Cyclic Redundancy Check error when copying from DVDs to hard drive

When you say older "style", do you mean the disks are actually of greater age? Disks can certainly deteriorate with age. Do the same disks give CRC errors on another computer?

I have a 250GB Hard drive that isn't an external one. It was actually originally in the ps3 but i took it out to fix problems in getting the ps3 to work right (recently it stopped working.) I plugged it into my computer and I can't get it to work. I can't format it because it keeps giving me the cyclic redundancy check error and it's being registered as un formatted space when it should be FAT 32. I really need it to work again. Any help will be great! thank you. I have no idea what to do.

Hey guys,

i recently took my external harddrive (hitachi 320gb) to a friends house, where it was accidently dropped approximately 1.2m from a table to a wooden floor (when it was turned on and running). it seemed fine for the next 3-4 days, then this morning it had trouble turning on. (i.e. i had to flick the switch a few times and disconnect and reconnect the power cable). So i decided i'd back up all my files just in case this was a sign of a failing harddrive, as it was dropped. Thing is, while copying my files onto the computer, several (around 3-4 so far) has had CRC errors and i couldnt copy em.

What could this mean? should i just backup all the files i can (those not affected by the CRC error), reformat the harddrive, and keep using it? or should i buy a new one in case it suddenly goes dead?

cheers all.

Answer:External harddrive Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) error

I would back up for sure. From there i would be weary of use with it. Try it out with some things you are not afraid to lose. But i would buy a new one as this one doesnt sound all that great. Sounds like it is heading for the big PC repair shop in the sky.

I've gotten this error before on scratched discs. Now when I open certain files on my hard drive, I get the "cyclic redundancy check" and I can't open, move, delete or do anything with them.

How is this suddenlu happening now, and how do I fix it? I won't erase my hard drive, I have over 160 GB worth of data I can't get back easily.

Answer:Cyclic redundancy check on my hard drive?

You have corrupted sectors/blocks/clusters on your hard drive. Visit your drive makers web site (I think Seagate now owns Maxtor) and use their diagnostic tools to test your drive. Use the advanced or extended tests. These diagnostics also usually have an option to repair the problems if any are found. You can also try running chkdsk /r from the recovery console; it's accessible by booting to your XP installation CD. Unfortunately, your hard drive is probably on its way to the PC graveyard, so start backing up anything important to CD/DVD or another hard drive, PRONTO!

I have been using this WD hard drive (1 TB) for several months now without problems. My main computer crashed with a little help from my fists, now I am trying to rebuild an older computer, it was partitioned (i guess) with both Linxus and DOS, and the program files and all my original computer back up folders, videos and pics are stored on my external harddrive. When I plugged it into the DOS computer, it does have windows XP, but an error messgae popped up stating the e/drive needed to be formatted. I had never seen this error messgae and did not format the drive, but it wouoldn't allow me to access the drive. I tried again after re booting the computer, and I wasn't sure what the formatting involved so I hit YES, a WARNING message popped up telling me all my files would be erased if I formatted, and I immediately hit NO and unpllugged my drive. Now I can't see any files on the drive, although it recognizes it on other computers, it will not show the space capicity or free space, and it says it in NTFS format. Did me plugging this drive into a DOS computer change the settings somehow from FAT32 to NTFS? and if so How do I save my files? I did not format it, so I don't believe the files have been erased or it should show the free space as 1TB, right? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, I will die if I lost all thiese files

Hello!
Are you attempting to install the program off of a CD or dvd? Because if its scratched that would explain the error and the noise your laptop is making (its actually the cd/dvd rom).

If so, go Start > Run > Type in chkdsk C: /f /r (Assuming C: is the drive that threw the CRC error)

I get this "cyclic redundancy check error" when I try to copy files from a DVD-RW onto my hard drive. I burnt said DVD about two years ago using Cyberlink DVD Solution Power2Go. I get this error with mulitiple DVDs, but not all of them (I've got five and I get this error with only three). Also, I get the error with some files, but not others (on the same DVD). I really can't lose these files! My guess is they were burnt wrong, but I'm really not sure. Is there any way I can recover these files?

Oh, I'm using XP SP3.

Thank you!

Hi,
so earlier in the year my OS hard drive crashed, and I haven't had time to work on the problem until now. (Seagate Baracuda 3.5" 500GB 7200rpm, running Win7)

I docked the HDD and plugged it into my girlfriend's laptop with a USB cable, and the drive shows up under Disk Management, but there aren't any options for mounting or formatting.

I tried running DBAN from boot, but I get non-fatal errors and the program won't run. (It runs fine with other drives)

My biggest concern isn't getting information from the drive because I was only using it (primarily) to boot from and to store my programs. No, my concern is whether or not I can salvage the drive and re-use it. I'm not that interested in buying (another) hard drive.

So I guess what I'm asking is for a litter direction and advise. All is appreciated.
Thank you very much,
J.O.

When installing the driver for my Canon Rebel digital camera, the setup completes and I'm told to plug my camera in and turn it on and the install will finish itself. After doing that, I get a message saying the install could not be completed due to a data error: cyclic redundancy check.

Googling this issue hasn't been helpful in my situation so far. Wondering if anyone can offer any direction or help here.

I have installed this driver and camera on two other computers I have and have never had an issue. I did notice in device manager that the camera is listed, but has the yellow exclamation mark next to it. I have no access to the device in any way, though. I also noticed that the USB 2 / IEEE combo I installed on my computer also has a yellow mark and while the computer seems to not associate any driver with it. I actually attempted to install a driver for it, but that receives the same data error: cyclic redundancy check response. However, the USB and IEEE slots work fine.

I'm assuming the problem is with my computer and not the driver for the camera as I've installed that successfully elsewhere (and I'm not using a CD so there's no issue with scratches on CDs, which seems to be associated with the error I'm getting), and that my computer gives the same error for two different drivers.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Much appreciated. I'm at a dead end.

Hi, I have recently had a cyclic redundancy check error on my external hard drive and now I can't access it at all although it is still recognised by windows. Is there any way to retrieve the data from it, or is it a lost cause? I am hoping for the former!!!

Answer:Cyclic redundancy check error!! Aaaaargh!

Hello NormanBolton ,
I hope you might be able to restore access to your data.
What have you tried so far? It's a good idea to cover the basic stuff first. You should try using a different USB cable, different port on the PC and if possible test on different machine. It's also a good idea to run the manufacturer's diagnostics tool to check the drive.
If that doesn't help a bit more information about your situation would be useful. If I understood correctly after you had a CRC error you were able to access your external for a while? Have you performed any changes to the drive recently? What OS are you running? What is the model of the external drive? When you say it's recognized by Windows, does that mean that the drive is displayed in My Computer or do you find it only in Disc Management?

I own two identical laptops. Both started having the same problem two days ago. Model is CQ61-410US Notebook from Compaq. Running Windows 7 Home Premium. 64-bit operating system.
I started getting a cyclic redundancy check error (error_crc error per MS Windows). The error occurs when I attempt to syncronize either of my two laptops with the ACT software from Sage loaded on the remote server. I have been successfully syncing these laptops for the two years in the same fashion. Only today have I begun having this problem. And I have two other computers that are syncing without a problem. I did a restore back to yesterday morning before a Windows critical update was installed. That did not help. Because it is a problem with only these two laptops, my suspision is that it has something to do with the laptops and some kind of an update that has affected them. aloha all,
I've reviewed the other threads on this subject and they don't seem to apply to my situation.
I'm transferring music from my hard drive to a brand new USB flash memory stick.
Most of the music copied without problem. I have 2 playlists that won't copy due to "cannot copy, data error, cyclic redundancy check".
any help will be much appreciated.

My pc crashed on yesterday and was unable to boot into window as it required to run chkdsk and i found a lot file record segments were unreadable or corrupted. I changed the hardisk, installed a new os and then tried to back up some important files from the crashed hardisk but some was not able to transfer as a message pop-out stating data error: (cyclic redundancy check), my questions are :

1) Can those files under the data error to be recovered?

2) I read about the cause of it but is there any way to prevent from happening?

3) Is the hardisk still can be used?

I would be very appreciated if someone could help me out with this matter...

thanks

Answer:Data Error: Cyclic redundancy check

The harddrive sounds to be physically faulty
Therefore the data is probably corrupted in those sectors
I don't believe the HardDrive can be used again (and if used, it will slow your computer down)

Hmm, Make backups often to external media is always a good thing to do.
(Possibly a bit late to tell you that though)

Hi,I am trying to copy Audio Files from a Verbatim DVD+R 4.7GB disc to my C drive. It starts by copying them over fine but then comes up with Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Check)message about halfway through copying over.I have heard there are good CD check software with recovery of damaged or corrupted files.Does anyone have any advice on how I can get these files onto my hard drive?Kind Regards,Dave.

Answer:Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Check) on DVD

CRC errors are pretty much the end for some files. Dont hold too much hope to getting all the files back working.click hereHave a look at that. Not sure if it will do much for you but you now have experienced the wonders of modern day computing. My advice is in future you back up everything twice.

Im trying to delete this one file to get corel draw working right and I get this error when trying to delete it "Cannot delete corel draw: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)". I ran CDChecksetup and that file came up with an error. How would I go about fixing this or just all together deleting the file, which I want to do anyway. This file is on the hard drive, I tried safe mode but that didnt work. I need to fix this by tonite for a project. Please help, thanks

Answer:Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Your hard drive could be dieing. I've gotten that error when trying to retrieve files off of bad hard drives that have corrupted sectors ect. I'd head to www.wdc.com and download the Data Lifeguard Diagnostics program. It'll run on any brand's hard drive. Double click the hard drive icon and run the "Extended test". If you have any issues your file could be corrupted.

I have a high spec Sony Desktop with XP home. All was well until one dark day i installed Norton Systemworks. My PC has been ill ever since and runs like a sick old man. Un-installing has made no difference. However, i have just lived with it. My pc has also since this time never been able to get a windows update - error when trying to connect to the site. Microsoft have been unable to fix this! This week i wanted to install some sync software for my new sonyerricsson phone (P900). It would not install, error message :"could not load C:\program files\installshield....intel\ctor.dll"I was advised to remove service pack 1a and re-install. Howeverm because my machine cannot connect to windows upadte, i couldn'y re-install. I then read that a particalur hotfix could be stopiing my sync software installtion. So i removed it and thenmy pc would not start. I spent a whole day with recivery console replacing the corrupted dll's.When i got the thing up and running again, i proceeded to copy everthing on my c drive onto my D partition, in prep for a re-install of XP on the c drive (fresh start). I now keep getting the data error CRC when copying some files from C to D. PLEASE HELP !!!!

Answer:Data error (cyclic redundancy check) in Win XP

I don't know much about this although I do know that compressed files can cause CRC data errors. Try a google search for the error message that you're getting. Also send an e-mail with your problem to [email protected] They should be able to help as they are a UK computer magzine and very professional. Technical problems seem to be their speciality. Just make sure you put your name & address and PC spec in the e-mail as you may get printed in the next issue of the mag. It won't cost you a penny.

Hi guys,

I have WesternDigital Blue 1TB harddrive in raw format and I cant recover data nor format it.

Regards.

Answer:How to fix data error cyclic redundancy check

Your system specifications show a laptop.

But this seems to be an internal drive on a desktop.

If it is indeed an internal drive on a desktop, forthwith disconnect your faulty drive to prevent it keep spinning till you decide what you want to do with it.

Was it working alright in the desktop before and for how long?

When did it become RAW and for how long it remained connected after becoming RAW?

Do you want to format it now? ( I am asking this question because you tried formatting it.) I shall see your answers only tomorrow morning after 11 hours from now since it is already bedtime for me.

Hi,

Windows 7 doesn't recognize my SSD drive. When I go to disk management, it shows a message to initialize it (image no.1) but when I press OK to do that, one another message appears and says: Data error cyclic redundancy check (image no.2). My computer windows doesn't show that drive and also when I went to cmd->diskpart, again it didn't show that disk to use of chkdsk /f command. How to solve the problem please?

Answer:Data error cyclic redundancy check ssd

I could to revive that disk in diskpart using PartedMagic in boot. I've uploaded a new image from that. The remained problem here is that I can't delete it there.

Just like the topic title says, I have been receiving this message: Data error (cyclic redundancy check) when trying to install some software. The whole error reads:
C:\Users\Me\Downloads\ArtizenInstall_295.exe Error 23 while opening this file: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
I've tried turning off my AV and UAC (just in case, who knows with computers) . . . I've cleaned my registry and run the disk check.
Any ideas? Let me know if I need to provide more info. Thanks, Kirk

Answer:Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

When seen with optical drives...that message usually indicates a problem reading the media. I would check the drive...and the media used.

If I received that message with every type of CD/DVD...I'd try cleaning the lens and/or prepare to acquire a new drive.

Hello,
I am running into a bunch of errors while attempting to install microsoft 10 into my created pc. I am going to list everything I can to see if anyone has a solution to my issues.
To get a clean picture I am installing using a flashdrive.
When my pc is powered on I choose my language. Next I type in my cd key. Accept the terms. Custom install. Here I have one drive listed: Drive 0 Unallocated Space. This have 931.5 GB in total and the same in free space. This is all I see. So I select this and click next. I receive an error message with the code 0x80300002. Next when I attempt to select new and create a partition it gives me the error "we couldnt create partition (Error: 0x9cb7cda0)
This has prompted me to look into the command function.
When I open the command function I see( X:\Sources>) idk if the x matters.
I get to list disk, select disk 0(the 931 gb), clean, create partition primary. This is where I receive the error message: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
This made me believe I needed to specify the volume. So when I go to list disk I see disk 0(931 gb) and disk 1(14gb). Now when I go to list volume to see the disk 0(931 gb) it is not listed. All I see is the former disk 1(14gb) listed as disk 0(14gb now).
From here I have no idea what to do. I attempted assigning a new letter the 14gb in hopes of getting the 931gb to the c but couldnt force this because I couldnt find it in list volume.
I know this is alot but I am so lost and need some help an... Read more

I am trying to load Windows XP Pro on to my laptop which is currently using Windows 98 SE. Everything is fine until the actual installation begins. I the get the above message and the install is aborted. The Microsoft website suggests it is a problem with the HDD and checkdisk should be run, The PC won't let me do that but suggests Scandisk instead which I have run with no errors, I have also defragged with no no errors, I don't think there is a problem with the CD, does anyone have any idea what the problem might be?

Answer:Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Although you don't think its a problem with the CD The Data error (cyclic redundancy check) error can occur if the source setup CD is defective. Do you have another partition to try the insulation on?

fsutil dirty query returned both C: and D: drive as Dirty.

Desc of the problem and other information:

First started off about 6 months ago, my pc has 2 drives, C: and D: with D: being empty, nothing stored, not used for anything.
started storing files and within some time there was about a full drive of files, music, programs etc
A program (osu! a music game) was running on D: and froze. After 10 mins of freezing, ctrl+alt+del and power button not working, i stupidly decided to switch it off by the wall.
After restarting the PC, nothing much was different.
A few days later, some songs began to freeze and fail to play.
I checked it out, when clicked, it says cannot play on WMP.
some time later, some winrar files began to fail to open/extract files from. the error message was "Error, cyclic redundancy check"

after many weeks, more and more files began getting this "cyclic redundancy check" error. i have searched online and performed CHKDSK many times with /f and /r with no hope.
Downloaded malware bytes and done many deep scans and found nothing
Used Norton 360 and deep scans, etc, still nothing

reluctant to by a new hard drive, i moved most of the existing files to my C: drive...
some corrupted files such as .mp3/.iso and some other files could not be copied, they were deleted.
some small files took a LONG time to copy across, which was worrying.
after that, i performed the "fsutil dirty query" check on both drives daily. D: ... Read more

Answer:C: D: drive both dirty/corrupt/cyclic redundancy check

If a file is corrupt it's going to stay that way until you fix it. Moving it is not a fix.
An infected file will definitely spread the infection to it's new location.
Sounds like you need a new drive. And perhaps stay away from torrents. They are so old news anyway.

I just started to get this error message.

I am running a Win98 machine and receiving the error when printing on hy HP PSC 2210 printer. I recently started to use a TRENDnet 4-Port Bus-Power USB Hub (my PC only has two USB ports) and I was having no problems printing at all until just now. I did some research and found some solutions (ie turning off the printer, unplugging the usb cable, restarting, plugging in the USB cable, turning on the printer) but that did not seem to work. When I disconnect the hub and plug the printer in directly to the USB port I can print fine....so obviously the problem is with the hub.

Any ideas and also why it did work but now causes me problems.

I guess I should go out and buy a powered USB hub, but the ones I have seen don't seem to support Win98.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi all,

I have posted in this forum as it is a combo question and not sure if it is the hardware or the software that is causing problems. If anyone has any ideas about the following I would be most appreciative.

Receiving error: Cannot copy XXXX Files: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

System error showing on:
HP Pavilion
Microsoft XP Home Edition SP2
Unit: HP DVD Writer 640b (Standard)
Drag and drop copy from CD to the Hard drive
AND
Using the DOS program - error still shows in DOS.

ALSO on a 2nd System:
Receiving error:
Cannot move Files: Corrupted Files
(System freezes when I try to move them now)

System error showing on:
Toshiba Notebook M2 MSPA010A0M05
Microsoft XP Professional Edition SP2
Unit: MATSHITA UJDA750 DVD/CDRW

These files were originally burnt to CD using the following:
Hardware: LITE-ON Combo LTC-48161H
Software: BURN4FREE (Version unknown)
CD: TDK 700MD CD-RW80HS HighSpeed 4~12x Multi Speed Compatible
Files: Work files Zip compressed using WINZIP (current version)

Additional Info:
Burn4Free requested that the CD be finalised (though it is a CD-RW)
2 seperated DISCS are coming up with the error.
2 seperate systems reject the TWO discs.
The files don't seem to be corrupted (checked the system first, though on reading other postings of similar issues - it suggests corrupted files??)
The originals are no longer available (the system was formatted last evening).

I have DVD Shrink (latest) and I use it to make backups of (legally purchased) DVDs so the originals don't get damaged...So far I haven't had any errors with anything, with the exception of a largely scratched disk once... until nowI tried to backup "Inside Man" and it gets to around 2-4% (entire non-compressed disk backup, naturally) but then gives me DVD shrink has encountered an error and can not continue
Fail to read file E:\
Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)I've searched around and it turns to either be a bad/scratched disk or a new security measure...The disk is brand new with no scratches, finger prints or anything on it, and the movie played with no errors or bad frames (as far as I noticed) in DVD X Player (on computer) and on a sony DVD player (tv).I've seen people try with success using DVD Decrypter but when i tried, I got errors once again...so I'm fairly certain it's a security measure (seeing as the drive is only a few days old and plays/backs-up anything else fine)...Any ideas?

Are you backing up your files to your C: drive? or another hard drive.

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > then Right click on the Command Prompt, then select Run As Administrator.

In the Command Prompt window type chkdsk /r you will need to restart your computer for chkdsk to start.

If your backups are on a different hard drive then run the Elevated Command Prompt as stated above. chkdsk X: /r ( With X being the drive letter of your second hard drive)

DVD shrink keeps giving me cyclic redundance check errors when I try to rip this one Dave Chappelle DVD. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Is it because of a bad DVD or do I need to try new software. And if so, what software?

Answer:Data error (cyclic redundancy check) with DVD shrink

If it is only with that one disk then it's because of a damaged disk. Other than cleaning it and maybe trying one of those CD/DVD Doctor things, there isn't much you can do.

If it was happening with other disks I would say that RAM and your drive are possible culprits but this seems to be a clear-cut case of a banged-up disk.

My HP Pro 4321s notebook (with Windows 7 Professional 32-bit installed) failed to boot up.

As I did not backup the data files (this notebook was used for only a few months), I disconnected the notebook hard disk and installed it to an external disk case (SATA interface to connect my notebook harddisk and USB 2.0 interface for connection to other
PC or notebook's USB port).
After I connected this external disk to another notebook (windows 7 Professional 64-bit), a pop-up window asking me to run CHKDSK for SYSTEM (F:) appeared.  Therefore, I answered 'YES' to dismount the volume and proceed.  After CHKDSK
had finished for this drive F: , it showed file rec segment 96-99 unreadable. The CHKDSK report was then displayed.

Then, another pop-up window appeared :  Drive G:\  You need to format the disk drive before you can use it.  Do you want to format it ?

I replied 'No' and Message : 'Error :  G:\ is not accessible.  Data error (cyclic redundancy check)' was displayed.

Hey,
I am trying to copy a file that is split up into various achieves. When the copying process is going on I get an error cannot copy file, data error (cyclic redundancy check). I want to get this thing to work asap. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Answer:Solved: Data error (Cyclic redundancy check)

A cyclic redundancy check means the computer can't read the data off the media. Typically this happens with optical media but also happens with HDD or other magnetic media once and awhile as well. If it's on a CD/DVD try cleaning the disc and the laser lens. If it's a magnetic media use check disc to repair any errors and try again. If that doesn't work then you can try a more aggressive recovery program.

Answer:need help on "data error(cyclic redundancy check )

timsimp  ........There are plenty of technical resources on the Web that discuss cyclic redundancy checks (CRCs). Most times you won't need to worry about this technobabble. That is, until one it day it suddenly appears and you think - what the *censored* does that mean? In simple terms, a CRC is bit of mathematics used to ensure that your data is OK when being transfered. It's a checking procedure that quickly identifies when data has been damaged. If you get this message, it means that the file being read by your PC or software is corrupted. However, it does not mean all the data is lost forever. When data is transfered, it is usually in small blocks and each block is given a CRC value. If something goes wrong with the data between the time it leaves the source and arrives at its destination, the CRC sent at the source will no longer match the one that is calculated when the data arrives - this is when the cyclic redundancy check error will appear.Quotei'm trying to transfer all my file from my secondary harddisk , which seem not working well to my new harddisk !!!!! cause everytime i start up it'll go into blue screen message saying that it needs a  check for file system consistency !!!!! WD had a bad period for a couple of years in the race with Maxtor, but their products have improved to the level they once had, since last year.

If you connect the sata drive with USB2, it will be horribly slow.

If your computer has an e-sata connection, buy an e-sata external disk and the performance will be equal to internal drive.

There are also e-sata adapter boards to put into your computer, allowing you to connect the e-sata drive.

Just something to think about.

First post so please go easy on me. I have one of the above and on first use showed no problems on my windows XP Laptop. Then i came to use it and got a block from Mcafee virus detected and prevented the WD from operating. I got onto WD help desk who informed me this was a problem they had notified Mcafee about and they were doing a fix. I should leave it a few days and then update my Mcafee. This i have done numerous times, still the same problem. The only way I can run the WD is by disabling Mcafee and installing the wdsync file again. The virus it shows is WDSYNC_ 7.0.328.exe.Another issue is that when I disconnect the WD from my Laptop I loose my wireless connection and have to re boot the computer and have windows connect the wireless connection. A friend has bought a Western external hard drive for 39.99 from Tesco and there were no instructions on how to back up files to it, apart from Chinese! . Eventually I opened the My Documents window and opened the External drive window (F drive) and selected the whole of My Documents, including My Music and My Pictures, and dragged and dropped and it copied all of the selected files to the external drive. I safely removed it and insterted again and checked the files were copied to the drive and managed to drag one back to desktop and it copied it back ok, but I wanted to transfer some of the files to another computer, and it would not recognise the USB in the second computer. I feel worried that if the need to re-establish these files onto a new computer, if the backup was needed, that it would not work. Any ideas. When I first inserted the USB for the external hard drive autoplay did not come up and I had no idea what to do, but treated it the same as a flash drive and it seemed to work. But it should surely open on another computer, as that would be the point of the backup.

Sale price 68.Is it worth buying one? I don't have thousands of pictures or thousands of files, but who knows about the future? (3) If not, I would welcome any recommendations on which one to buy. I'm one of those people who always knew I should be backing up my data, but never got myself to do it! However I have now finally started to do so and am going through each of my hard drives, one by one. Unfortunately it seems that I didn't get to one of them fast enough and it appears to have failed.

The good thing is that, using Recuva, I can see many of my files, despite a file directory that seems to have become somewhat corrupted. The bad part is that when I try recovering the files, I am faced with a cyclic redundancy check. The file is a RAW one and thus I can't use the CHKDSK /R or /F solution.

I've also tried switching to a 3rd party enclosure, but that hasn't solved the problem.

Any ideas on how I can recover my data?

Answer:Recovering Detectable Files Despite Cyclic Redundancy Check (RAW Drive)

May be try accessing the drive using Linux Live CD/USB and see if you're able to recover your files, hopefully it will overcome crc error and you will be able to get your data.

Hope this helps.

Recently I bought a new Star Wars Galaxies disc set after my old one got destroyed and I was hoping to play but when I started to install the new disc I got a cyclic redundancy check error. I used to have Star Wars Galaxies installed on my computer so some left over files from that could be interfering with the installation. It says the error is with a file called data2.cab. I'm not sure how to fix this and any help with be appreciated.

I have a new Pendrive mp3 player. When copying mp3s from hard drive to the player memory I get:- Data error, cyclic redundancy check when the amount of copied files gets to around 120MBs. This happens regardless of the order files are copied in and also happened when I tried copying other mixed files. It seems to make no difference whether the player is formatted FAT or FAT32. The player memory is supposed to be 256MBs and the formatted volume is recognised as 247MBs by Windows which seems about right. Scandisk reveals no errors. Anyone got any ideas? Seems to me there is a fault in the player memory, but perhaps I am missing something.

Answer:Data Error Cyclic Redundancy Check copying mp3s

The cyclic redundancy check error suggest something is corrupt but whether its a file or the flash memory I'm not sure.

My office manager has a program she was trying to install on a Windows 7 machine. It is new. When installing, it will not finish and gives the "data error (cyclic redundancy check)" message. I tried to install the same program on mine (also Windows 7) and get the same error message. What is strange is she had this same program on her last computer (also Windows 7) and it installed and ran fine. I'm puzzled by this.

My computer shows all the files on my External hard drive, but I cannot access them. I get an error message that says the files are not found. I tried a data recovery, but the program cannot access the hard drive. Whats next?

Answer:Cannot access external hard drive ( Western Digital)

I would run CHKDSK /R driveletter:

If that doesn't work, I would remove the disk drive from the enclosure, install it internally to a desktop computer and try CHKDSK /R driveletter: again.

Hi guys,I purchased a 1 TB WD external hard drive 3 months ago. I've noticed bad sector on it after I ran a hard disk test software. I was wondering if I could run a low level format to get rid off the bad sectors. If yes, what tool is recommended. Is this drive is going to keep making problems for me? Is it faulty and there is no hope for it?Please advise. Thanks in advance,Shaz

Answer:Western Digital External Hard Drive Bad Sectors

First, I would backup everything on that drive that is important to you. Then run Chkdsk....http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265For Vista - http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-vista/how-to-use-check-disk-in-windows-vista/And then if problems persist return it for another under warranty

Hello everyone,
I have a WD 500GB external hard drive that is not being recognized by my computer anymore. It just stopped working. When I plug the USB cable in, Windows recognizes that the device is there, and says that it has installed the approapriate software for the device and it is ready to use. However, the drive does not appear in My Computer. Also, I have right-clicked on my computer and then the Manage option, and under Disk Management, I do not see the drive. I have all of my sports games and music on the drive. I just need some help on how to solve this problem.

Answer:Western Digital external hard drive problem

Firstly confirm the external drive and USB cable works in another computer
This will eliminate the Drive and cable, from your computer

Hello everyone, this is my first time posting here so please bear with me.

Lately I seem to be having problems with my WD 1TB external hard drive. I noticed the problem about 2-3 weeks ago when I went to play some music from Windows Media Player. Windows Media Player took a very long time to open and when I went to play some music files it would freeze up and I would have to end the Windows Media Player process through the Task Manager. After that I tried going directly into my external hard drive to play the music, but Windows Media Player would not play any file I chose. I noticed as I was opening the external hard drive through Windows Explorer it took a very long time for all the files to load and there is only 48GB worth of data on the external hard drive. I then started looking around online and found that it may be some type of security issue or that I should run CHKDSK. I tried to change the security settings so I could gain access for my files, but it kept coming up as Access Denied. Then I decided to run CHKDSK, which was somewhat of a mistake/problem because it took about 4 or 5 days to finish (I checked both boxes in CHKDSK). After CHKDSK finished it said that some problems were found and fixed, but as of now I am still having problems trying to access my files.

Regardless of what CHKDSK accomplished, I still think that there is a security issue and I cannot figure out how to fix it. The only way that I can get everything to work is to go file by file a... Read more

Do create a System Restore point before using this software so that you can revert back if need be. ( In fact you should always do that before trying any new software you haven't used before..)

I have a Dell Pentium Dual Core computer with Windows 10 Pro I attached a Western Digital External Hard drive that was working just fine but a few days ago all power went out in my room and my PC with attached external HD went out as well. When I restarted my PC everything seen fine...except now my external HD is not being recognized. Ir starts up just fine I can hear it I can see the lights come on but I don't see it with a drive letter. What should  do ?bigal50

Answer:External Western Digital Hard drive not being recognized

Under Disk Management in the computer look there to see if its mounted but shows up as not formatted or not partitioned. It might be there but no drive letter assigned. If you see it there DO NOT PARTITION OR FORMAT IT... instead you will need to run software to scan this drive and correct for damaged file tables. If the drive is not detected there then the drive may be damaged. If under warranty you could return the drive for a replacement but all data would be gone and potentially in the hands of whoever gets your dead drive. Or you can open the enclosure and mount the drive as a slave drive into a desktop computer and maybe then see it in disk management to work on its data recovery or if its the USB to SATA daughter board that blew on the external enclosure through this process of power loss, then your drive might mount up and get a drive letter as a 2nd hard drive in the computer in which all data would be accessible without a data recovery process needed.

Hello, thanks for taking the time to read this.

I enjoy making short films as a hobby and I run a couple YouTube channels that I upload to frequently. I went to open up one of my project files in Sony Vegas Movie Studio but for some reason, it took ages to open up. I had to sit there for a minute or so just for the program to begin and once it opened it took maybe two more minutes to open the project file.

The program was running really slowly and it was sluggish to try and edit anything. At first, I assumed it was a problem with my computer. It had been working just fine the day before so I rebooted the computer and tried again only to confront the same issue once more.

I have a 1TB HDD in my computer and a 1TB Western Digital External HDD that I use to store most everything that had to do with my films. I always have the External HDD plugged into my computer.

Anyway, the reason I think it's the External Hard Drive failing is because I noticed going into Windows Explorer that any time I would open a folder on the actual computer's HDD it would open just fine, but opening a folder on the External Drive would have me wait for about 20-30 seconds.

After this, I ejected and unplugged the External Drive and tried to open a Project File in Vegas that only used things stored on my computer and it loaded just as quick as always. So I would be lead to believe that the reason it was running so slow is because it was loading a Project File that used components stored on the Exter... Read more

Answer:Western Digital 1TB External Hard Drive Failing

Have you tried plugging the external into some other port on the PC?

You need to go to WD web site and download their disk tool for that particular drive. It will have a couple of tests. Try the simple quick one first.

And look up the return procedures for the drive at the WD web site if it fails the drive tests.

You might want to make an image of the drive with a tool like Macrium to preserve whatever is now on it in the current state.

Good afternoon,
I am sure this has been mentioned on here many times, but every time I search for my problem, I always get the same results: Third party this, format this, backup your data that.

Here is what is going on. I have a 2TB external hard drive that is more than 90% full. backing up my data via third party software is not an option because I don't have room to store the data anywhere. The copious amount of data on the drive is also why I can not just simply format the drive to change the file system. I have also tried a couple of methods involving check disk commands and using disk management. neither of these methods have worked out in my favor. This problem has really shaken my confidence with computers and troubleshooting. up until this point I thought I was pretty well educated on fixing stuff like this, but I really can not figure this one out.

So here's the summary: large hard drive, no formatting, no backing up the data, RAW to NTFS.

Thank you.

Answer:2TB Western Digital external hard drive Raw to NTFS

I'm still confused. What is it you want to do?

Try Recuva, if you think your files have been deleted!

Hello everyone,

I have a WD 120GB external hard drive that is not being recognized by my computer anymore. It just stopped working.

When I plug the USB cable in, I get the following message - USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB device attached to this computer has malfunctioned.

Also, I have right-clicked on my computer and then the Manage option, and under Disk Management, I do not see the drive.

I have all of my sports games and music on the drive. I just need some help on how to recover the data on my drive if my drive is corrupt which it looks like it is now.

Answer:Western Digital external hard drive problem

USB device (particularly a drive) not recognized can be a USB power issue

Are you plugging into a laptop or desktop?
Does the drive have it's own power cord? Is it plugged in?
