Keyboard and touchpad

Question: Keyboard and touchpad

I just finished installing a new dc power adapter into an Acer 5050 laptop computer and now the keyboard and touchpad isn't working. (I used an external USB mouse but haven't tried external keyboard yet. ) I have tried to use the function key but to no avail. Where do I look next?

Preferred Solution: Keyboard and touchpad

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Keyboard and touchpad

have you checked that it has not been disabled in control panel? have you checked device manager?

Hello Everyone,

My problem started after updating windows 8.1 to windows 10, of course!
First the touchpad just stopped working, for no reason.

My solution was to uninstall the drive and restart the laptop. And from time to time I had to do this proceed. Two weeks ago windows updated, and the touchpad issue's gone. . Unfortunately, another one appeared.

The feature "mousekey", which is turn it on at ease access to use the numeric keys to use them as a mouse, It's turning itself on. And doesn't matter how many times I turn it off, few seconds and it's on again.

I've tried uninstalling the drive, which after windows the last updating was "ELAN".

Then I replaced by the Toshiba drivers, which is "Synaptic", and uninstalled the drives ,the problem is the same. Because of that, I can't use my numeric key, which is annoying!! If anyone can come up with something I will be grateful.

On my laptop Satellite L20 not working keyboard and touchpad, but keyboard work in BIOS, USB-ports also not working (USB mouse).

Can i get update file for BIOS(traditional updating from boot CD, not OS!)

Sorry for my bad English.

Answer:Satellite L20 keyboard & touchpad not working but keyboard work in BIOS

If the traditional BIOS update is not available on the download page the only way to get it is to contact nearest authorized service provider. They have all versions.

But this keyboard and mouse issue is really strange. can you use it if you start operating system in ?safe mode??

I'm having problems with my All-in-One Keyboard on Windows 8.1(64 bit): it doesn't accept input both from keyboard and touchpad at same time (can't walk in a FPS game while looking with mouse, for example).
Is this a product's limitation or should it work?

I already have the issue that when I put my E5570 to sleep and wake it up again that the keyboard and touchpad do not work. So I have disable the sleep options in the BIOS.
Now I run into different issues.Yesterday I booted the laptop and it hang on the DELL logo, After a while it stated that my EFI file would not be correct. Force reboot and it booted straight to Windows.
What's more annoying is the fact that the laptop boot, the DELL logo is shown and then the screens go's black, as if it's not connected. SO it looks like it hangs.BUT an external monitor through HDMI does work and show the windows logon. The keyboard and touchpad also do not work.External mouse and keyboard do work.
So pretty much I got a brick when I do not have external display/keyboard and mouse available.
When I reboot the laptop it works fine again.Am I the only one with this?Loads of issues with the laptop and wondering if I just have a faulty laptop...
Clean Windows 10 Pro install is done 5 times.Used the  DELL Command Update to install all drivers and patches.Issues keep existing...

Answer:Latitude E5570 - Black display, no resons to keyboard/touchpad - External display/keyboard/mouse do work

I have been spending a lot of hours in troubleshooting this week.
Diagnostics are 100% ok.
Reinstalled Windows 10 about 15 times.Installing drivers by hands, installing drives trhough the dell update management application. The issues keeps existing.
To sum the them up:- Cold boot (laptop is off) to Windows. Keyboard/Touchpad do not work. (Reboot and they work again)- Resume from sleep. Keyboard/Touchpad do not work. (Reboot and the work again)
After I got the laptop I installed 32Gb of RAM and an 512Gb Samsung 950Pro PCIE M.2 NVME drive. The drive should be support as Dell states on the product page and in the manual that PCIE with NVME is supported.
"Advanced features, like industry-leading M.2 SATA and M.2 PCIe/NVME solid state drives, provide data transfer speeds up to 4x faster over traditional hard drivers. "
In order to get the drive visible and running on PCIe I had to disable the sata controller in the BIOS.This way the drive is detected in Windows as an PCIe NVME capable drive.
Just to verify if the issues I went back to default with the delivered 256Gb M.2 sata drive and 8Gb RAM.To install Windows I had to turn the Sata controller back on.
Installed the drivers manually updated WIndows and tested. The issues do NOT occur.
Retested by installing the drivers using the Dell Update Application. The issues do NOT occur.
So I figured out that the SATA controller somehow is the guilty part for all the issues.I mean when enabled to ACHI or RAID the sleep and non... Read more

Question: Keyboard/Touchpad

Trying to fix a HP Pavillion dv9000 for a friend. After a windows update the keyboard/touchpad won't work at the login screen.
Safe mode does not work either. The keyboard does work in the Bios and if I boot a live CD they both work as well. A USB mouse/keyboard doesn't work either. Also, there are no system restore points saved. No DVD either. Any ideas?

Much appreciated.

Ever since buying my HP Spectre x360 (Windows 10), I have encountered a problem where I can't use my trackpad (with synaptics driver) while holding down a key. This is annoying because I can't play games that use keys such as holding down "w" to run. I have researched this issue for a long time and found no solutions. Plus, HP tech support has found no solution. And please don't tell me to just turn off palm check, because you can't do that in Windows 10. Please, help me find an answer!

Hi All
The changes to the MS OS'es and touch screens might bring some advantage for me and my CAD work if using keyboard and, if available, a touchpad(drawing board) in one. I work on a large screen attached to the laptop with a wireless KB.
Has anyone of you used or come across anything like that and could a touch pen be used for drawing(CAD) on it similar to a WACOM board? I could do without a mouse then.
Just wonder..........

Answer:Keyboard with touchpad for CAD

Their products just recently stared showing up in my locale so I don't know much about them. Too bad they didn't put up English descriptions and data, don't know what they are capable off. I suppose (by looking at other similar touch-pads) that the are in capacitive technology so pens for smart phones and tablets should work on them. By looks of them, they are smaller than drawing boards and even if they are in highres could be too small and touchy for precise drawing.

Hi, just wondering if anyone can help me. Been having a problem with my laptop recently and when I turn it on the keyboard and touchpad don't seem to be responding but when I go into safe mode this is working. Also when trying to run system restore this is getting the the finalising stage and then doesn't actually work.

Please somebody help!

Answer:Help with keyboard and touchpad.

It could be Static Electricity build up that can interfere with the touchpad and keyboard. To clear it up, try a hard reset; turn off your laptop and disconnect it from any external power source. Then take out the battery. Next, hold your laptop's power button for about a minute. Then replace the battery and power up.

I notice, in your post, you state it works in safe mode, so this may not be beneficial.

I'm pretty sure this is a software issue. I have a Toshiba Satellite A75-S209 laptop, with Windows XP. Yesterday, the Touchpad cursor froze in place, and rebooting didn't help. I purchased an optical wireless mouse in order to finish what I was doing, but upon plugging it in, the Touchpad unfroze. I'm not exactly sure what happened to make it function properly again. But then the second problem cropped up immediately. The right side of my keyboard began to malfunction. The key for "M" became "0", the key for "P" became " -", and so on. But only on my user screen. My wife's user screen is functioning normally, and that is what I'm typing on now. Software issue? Any ideas?

I have Webroot's Spy Sweeper running, as well as Adaware SE, and McAfee Virus Scan. Nothing is turning up. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Windows 7 Home Premium dual-booted with Ubuntu on my HP Pavillion dv5 laptop.
My keyboard works at BIOS screen, but when I boot any of the two OSes, the keyboard and touchpad stop working. Booting in safe mode doesn't work. I've tried Windows repair, but I can't even get to choose my repair option because the keyboard and touchpad don't work. Ubuntu repair doesn't fix the issue either.
I've even gone as far as to boot up a BackTrack OS installed on a USB drive, but after booting the OS, the keyboard and touchpad didn't work either. Now I doubt it's more of a Hardware issue and not a (corrupt) HDD issue.

I suspect that my laptop has some IRQ conflicts since at BIOS only the keyboard is used as input, so there's no request collisions there. But after a boot of an OS, there are several inputs (keyboard controller, touchpad controller, HP volume slider, etc). My antivirus program (BitDefender) did not detect any viruses.

Regardless of whatever the problem may be, is there a fix?

Answer:Can't use Keyboard and touchpad after boot

since it is with both operating systems, my first thought would be the bios battery is bad and needs to be replace.

Hi there, i will probably buy the x1carbon in the next days, i only have 2 questions: 1. I really don't care about the touchscreen but i heard great things about the x1 carbon touch touchpad, does the x1 carbon have the same touchpad as the newer one? 2. Is the backlit keyboard included in every model and with every configuration ? Thanks in advanceBen

Answer:x1 touchpad and backlit keyboard

Hi, BenCy
Welcome to the forums!
In regard to your questions:
1) Yes, the touch version does have the same TouchPad as the standard X1 Carbon, and, in my opinion, it's even better!
2) As far as I'm aware, the backlit keyboard is standard on all models of the X1 Carbon, touch included. This can be seen on the fact sheet here.
Hope it helps,

Hello All,

Hello all,

I have an Acer 5732Z laptop that has never given me trouble until today. I was in the process of updating my GPS when it told me to restart the computer with the GPS still plugged into the USB drive. However, when the windows 7 login screen came on, I was unable and am still unable to get my touchpad or keyboard to work. The GPS is unplugged and still nothing. It's not disabled (touchpad), safe mode/system restore doesn't work and I am past warranty so Acer cannot help. Any tricks I am missing? Any help would be thankful.

I am currently just stuck on the login screen. Have tried USB mouse and keyboard, nothing.

Answer:Touchpad/Keyboard Non-Responsive. Please Help!!

Uhm, try accessing BIOS settings just to see if the hardware is fine.

Just after you turn it on you see white text on the screen, a line of it says what key to press to get into BIOS. It's usually F2 or F12 or Del. press it a few times until you see BIOS options come up instead of the login screen.

If that works, then it's a Win 7 issue, shutdown the laptop and find an install/repair disk and try to restore the system to the nearest restore point following METHOD TWO of this tutorial. If you don't have an install disk, the first and second steps this tutorial help you getting one for free.

If the closest restore point is too distant or there are no restore points, use your install/repair DVD/USB flashdrive and follow this tutorial.

Hello, I just got my Ideapad y580 about a month or two ago and I've had this prolem ever since I've gotten it. At first I was sure that it would pass or somehow go away, but it's not. So when I turn it on sometimes it doesn't register the keyboard about 2/10 of the time, and I would be forced to keep restarting it until it worked. Also the touchpad does not register some of the time as well. Sometimes I would just be browsing o the internet and the touchpad will just die on me. Sometimes I would restart, the keyboard will work but then as soon as I boot up, the touchpad dies. I've already tried uninstalling intelligent touchpad and that synaptics thing but this problem still persists. Got any ideas? Thanks.

(only on W7)I'd done two major things in the past week and neither one of them could have had caused this because there'd been so much time in between. The first was I networked a couple folders on my hard drive so they were accessible on the rest of my home network (on Friday). Second I'd installed GIMP on my computer (Saturday night).

(only on W7)I did a restore point from about a week ago, still had the same problem, then I tried uninstalling GIMP and turning off file sharing, still nada.

I thought maybe it was a software problem and because I had a website due in a couple hours I thought I'd swap out the Windows 7 hard drive which I was using and instead use a hard drive with Xp, Oddly enough all the problems I've mentioned up to now and the problems I'll mention persisted on both platforms (unless otherwise stated), also note I hadn't used Xp in months (about 3 months ago was the last time I'd used it in a computer.)

Hi YozMan,

My first thought is that one of your cooling fans has either died or is so dirty it doesn't displace enough air.

That would explain temporary freezes.

I recently purchased an Ideapad Y550 and have been very happy with it, except for one issue, the touchpad freezes for 1-2 seconds every time I touch the keyboard.  I generally like to use the up and down arrows to scroll through websites so this is a large inconvenience. The first thing I did was plug in a mouse and noticed that the issue was not present.  I figured this must mean that it is a software issue.  My next step was to uninstall the Synaptic touchpad driver.  After performing that task the computer has to reboot.  On the initial reboot, the problem seemed to be solved.  However, immediately after rebooting, I received a Windows message stating that I would need to restart the computer again for my changes to take effect.  Since my problem appeared to be resolved I opted not to restart at that time. The problem is that when I did restart my computer, the issue resumed.  It looks like the Synaptic driver re-installed itself.  Is anyone else running into this problem?  If so, have you found a long term solution?   I would prefer not to have to uninstall the driver and restart my computer every time I need to turn it off.

Answer:Touchpad & keyboard not working

You could try this:

1. Turn the laptop off and remove all attachments including the battery.

2. Press the power button for about 15 seconds.

3. Replace the battery and power connection.

4. Boot the laptop and press F2 at the splashscreen to go into setup.

5. Press F9 which will reset to defaults.

6. Press F10 to save changes and exit. Answer 'yes'.

7. Laptop will reboot.

Hopefully this will solve your problem.

What is the installed operatiing system? You have me at a disadvantage while trying to help you since I don't know the installed operating system. As a temporary workaround, plug in a usb mouse.   You will need to mouse to enter the control panel and enable the touchpad again. There is no disable\enable of touchpad in the BIOS. Were you in the Device Manager when you disabled the touchpad? That is another place where it can be enabled and disabled. For Windows 10Enable or Disable Onscreen Keyboard using SettingsSelect ?Start? > ?Settings?.Choose ?Ease of Access?.Select ?Keyboard?.Set ?On-Screen Keyboard? to ?On? or ?Off? as desired.

My problems are mainly with the keyboard and touchpad.  The touchpad itself no longer seems to respond, although it SOMETIMES works for a small amount of time if I restart my computer.  The keyboard usually works, but it sometimes also stops working.  The keyboard issue is usually fixed after restarting the laptop.  The touchscreen works perfectly and a usb mouse has no issues.  It seems to only be the keyboard and touchpad. Also, my computer seems to "freeze" every 5 seconds or so.  It does NOT interrupt video or streaming; it just has a momentary blip where my typing does not work for just a half of a second.  For example, when I try to name a document/folder it will, every 5 seconds or so, stop letting me change/create the name and keep whatever I have just written as the name.  So if I want to rename a word document to "testmonkey123" I can double click on the name, erase what it already has, type "testmonke" before my laptop blips and then the word document is just called "testmonke" as if I hit enter or clicked away.  It also interrupts typing. For example, I will try to type "Hello world, I wish my computer was fixed and had no issues." without stopping:  Ho world, I wish my comp was fixed and had no issues.  Typing is largely a waiting game for the blip to go away. These blips do not interfere with my usb mouse, nor the playback of videos.  However, it does interrupt typing ... Hi everyone
I recently formatted+reinstaled Windows on a "old" laptop (Acer Aspire 5620)
I installed Windows 7 (instead of Xp that it had earlier ) and after the installation was complete (first time n desktop) the touchpad and keyboard would not operate. at all
Ive tried all windows updates (in case of drivers), because there are no official drivers for 7(only xp)

The thing is that inside device manager theres nothing wrong with the touch+keyboard
(no marks, both are recognized and "operate fine")
Ive tried reboots, sometimes rarely the keyboard might enter a couple characters (with delay) and sometimes the touchpad might move the pointer a bit (with delay too)

However the keyboard works fine in bios, and both worked perfectly in windows setup (in formatting i mean)
The devices also works ok in safe mode.

Any ideas plz?

P.S. The computer before the format had ALSO win7 so its not something new with that

Hello guys
I've got a little problem with my laptop. When I press the same button many times, entire keyboard and also touch-pad are getting stuck (not responding anyhow), but the Bluetooth mouse is functioning fine. Whatever I try can not fix it! The only thing to do is to restart the laptop, after restarting forking just fine, unless I start to press the same button many times (like if I will delete something with Backspace key, it is getting stuck)
Pleas help me! I tried everything I could read in google

I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 that has a vertical and horizontal scrolling option on the touch pad. It worked fine when I got the laptop but now the scrolling doesn't work. The touchpad works, just won't scroll. I must have accidentally changed the settings or something. I've read other postings and tried to go through the control panel but there is no option for a touchpad in my control panel and I can't find anything under mouse properties that I can change to fix this. Also, my keyboard now jumps all over the place. In the middle of typing my cursor jumps to another sentence and starts putting in my letters, how is that happening? That just started, it wasn't doing that before. I've looked through downloads thinking I needed a new driver but you can't tell what is what so who knows what to download! If anyone could help me, please email me at [email protected] as I can't always find this forum. Thanks for your help!

Answer:Laptop Touchpad and keyboard

I LOVE CSI....except NY.

I have an HP laptop with scroll on the touchpad.

When I go to "Mouse" in Control Panel I see Touchpad functions and an "ALPS" logo. I assume that is because of the touchpad software installed. Perhaps you have somehow uninstalled or corrupted your Touchpad software???

As far as the cursor jumping goes...I also had that problem. It was caused by the BASE of my THUMBS touching the touchpad while I typed. I'm more careful about that now, AND I turned DOWN the sensitivity of the Pad. Hope this helps.

Hi all, I'm new to sevenforums, so I'm sorry if this is not the right place for this question. Basically, I just got a new laptop and started doing a little gaming (KOTOR and Battlefront II), the only problem is those games use awsd to move and the touchpad to look around and I can't use the touchpad while using the keyboard. Is there any way to enable touchpad use while using the keyboard? And an external mouse would do no good as I have no where to put it.

Answer:How do I enable my touchpad while using my keyboard?

There is a option in the touchpad settings called "palm check" that disables touchpad input while typing. Disable it, and you should be all set.

I have a Windows 7 Professional ProBook 4440s with a 64-bit Operating System.Last night, I tripped on my computer and became violently ill on its bottom; the computer was closed, but overturned.  As far as I can tell, nothing got into the battery or keyboard, but some did get into one of the USB ports. Initially, I turned on my computer, and was able to scan my finger (for the password) but was unable to move the cursor or use the keyboard. As suggested, I shut off my computer, removed the battery, held down the power button for 30 seconds, plugged my computer back in, and powered it back up.  I still could not use the touchpad or type, although I was still able to log into my computer via finger-scanner.  I then plugged in an external mouse, and it seemed to work, but it stops working after a few minutes.  I have to keep disconnecting and reconnecting it to use the external mouse.  With the external mouse plugged in, I am able to type. What is the least-intrusive way that I can regain control of my fingerpad and keyboard?

I have been using Windows 8 for a long time now. Currently I am using it on a lenovo ideapad Y500. It was shipped with Window 8 Single Language but I upgraded it to Windows 8 Pro. From the pas 3 or 4 days my touchpad and keyboard are misbehaving a lot. Some times both the things freeze, doesn't allow me to do anything. Sometimes keys itself gets pressed and some random characters get printed on screen. Some times they keys don't work properly and pressing one key prints something else. Touchpad and Mouse settings go crazy too. The setting for both the buttons interchange, sometimes left click works as middle button or right click. I don't know why this is happening but it is hampering my work greatly. To add to this, previously I used Windows 8 on a lenovo ThinkPad Edge 11 and it used to happen with that machine too, I thought this was because of machine but now this is happening to my new machine. The PC is set for automatic update system and Windows Defender also didn't catch any malicious thing too.

Answer:The touchpad and keyboard misbehaving a lot

i had a look around on forums and found a few posts that are similar to my problem but not exactly the same. my touchpad isn't working (since i spilt tea on it a few weeks ago its been acting funny anyways) but since i always use a mouse or keyboard shortcuts i barely care. another problem i've been having is that whenever i press my caps lock key my keyboard becomes unresponsive, the temporary solution for this is that i go to my hardware manager and uninstal the driver for my keyboard (i'm guessing it defaults to a windows driver or something) but regardless of how many times i do it uninstalling the driver (without restarting) fixes the problem.

Since I did this my touchpad and keyboard no longer seems to work! keyboard works fine when i select f8 on startup as i can flick through the options however when i boot into safe mode the touchpad and keyboard still don't work.

I don't know what to do as I can't do anything without the keyboard or touchpad!

Any help would be much appreciated.

I have a Dell Inspiron 5523 running Windows 8. Since about 5 hours ago I have had three primary issues:

The button "1" doesn't work but will open a new window in Chrome every time I press it.

The button "q" doesn't work but will turn down the volume for me. I have another key that already does that for me but it's a nice effort since I usually don't press that key too often.

My touchpad won't recognize swipes or gestures. Not all but useless but getting there. I can move the cursor. That's it. Everything else I've tried is a no-go.

As far as I can tell everything else is fine. I tried Keytweak to remap the keys but they were already properly set. I just ran Malwarebytes and it didn't pull up anything either. I have absolutely no idea what to do.
Anything you got would be fantastic since I'm a poor college student trying to finish his homework (not finals fortunately. For me it's still the beginning-ish of the semester but this isn't a great start.)

Yesterday evening to my surprise and utter dismay, both the keyboard and touchpad to my Presario CQ60-615DX completely stop functioning. I have no idea why, but upon restarting I did receive a message that a recent Windows update had been installed. I was unable to use the keyboard whatsoever, but did manage to install an external mouse. I have tried the following solutions:

1. I tried to recover from 1 week ago. The same errors occurred.
2. I uninstalled and re-installed the drivers. I was given a repeating error that the Keyboard Filter could not be fixed.
3. I backed up all of my files and did a System Recovery to the manufacturer's defaults. Problem is still occurring.

The keyboard and keys function in the BIOS and Startup Menu, just not in Windows, which leads me to believe this is a software issue, however none of the drives on Compaq or HP are fixing the situation. Oddly enough, when I access

Start > Control Panel > Keyboard

...and I change the Repeat Delay from Medium to Slow, and then close the window, the keyboard begins to function. There is still no response from the touchpad, however.

Any suggestions on what might be happening on how I can go about fixing this? A friend did find a driver that he was able to install in the BIOS that made it so that the keyboard functioned upon startup... 2 times.. Now it is back to the same process just in order to be able to type.

Thanks in advance, your help is invaluable!

Answer:Keyboard and Touchpad Unfunctional

Hello carimanes, Welcome to the Forum.

Check out the sugestions mentioned in this thread:
laptop keyboard not working
The thing about the bad battery is curious and promising, given your description of the problem. Not a hard thing to test.

Also this from our friend Dinesh:
Natural keyboard on laptop does not work after latest windows update
And try the device troubleshooter.

Sometimes when a program updates it uninstalls the old version. If you then try to restore to an earlier time the program will fail because some files it needs are gone. This would logically apply to drivers too.

You might try uninstalling the new Touchpad driver, installing the old driver, then doing the restore. You would need to be sure you were installing the same driver you had before.

Hi everyone, and Happy Holidays,

I just installed windows 7 ultimate on my daughters, acer aspire 3050 laptop. It was running vista home basic before. The vista install was damaged by viruses, so I decided to upgrade her to 7. All the hardware was recognized, but for some reason the keyboard does not work, it was working fine with the virus riddled vista install. For some strange reason the windows key does bring up the start menu, but none of the other keys seem to do anything. They all work in the BIOS just fine. Also the touch pad does work, but the cursor movement is very jerky, and it was also fine in vista. I went to acer's site, they don't have any windows 7 drivers available for this model, or any vista drivers for the keyboard, I installed the vista touch pad drivers, but they did not seem to help. I also messed with the keyboard settings in control panel, but nothing seems to help. Does anyone have any ideas, on what I need to do to fix this. I have been really pleased with 7 on my other computers, and would hate to have to go back to vista. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated, Thank you in advance,

Answer:keyboard and touchpad not working

The reason it won't work is because there is no Windows 7 support for your acer aspire 3050 laptop. You can see this at the Acer website, choose Notebook, Aspire then Aspire 3050 which will show you a page for your laptop. You can see there is no Windows 7 support as yet. Acer Support - Drivers & Download

Looks like you already found this out.

Let me look around and see if anyone has found a driver that will work. Nothing found that is made for your exact model so far.

Your model isn't on the list of supported laptops but that doesn't mean that a touchpad driver from another notebook won't work on your model. I would pick a model on the Windows 7 supported list, then find the touchpad and keyboard driver for that model and try it out.

I have read a few topics for solving this kinda problem, and there was some topics, where the problem was absolutely the same, like mine, but those solutions didnt work for me, unfortunetely.  I bought ma Lenovo IdeaPad laptop a few days ago, and when I woke up today, my keyboard and touchpad didnt work. When I go to the device manager, it says that my keyboard is working fine, but have problems with my touchpad (This device cannot start. (Code 10)). was reading about updating my BIOS. Right now my BIOS info is: SMBIOSBIOSVersionCCCN15WW(V2.01)   Downloaded update for BIOS from Lenovo website (ver 2.71) but when I wanted to install it, at the "Please choose one of the following tasks: Update ThinkPad Bios and Update model number" I get "Flash Module cannot be found. I have a Toshiba A100 PSAA8C-0FH00E laptop running XP SP2 and I can't seem to be able to fix it. A while ago my touchpad and keyboard stopped working, my system recognizes that the touchpad is there and it detects it every time I restart, but my attempts at reinstalling the driver have been cut short halfway through the installation where I am told that the installation can't continue because access is denied (i am system administrator & logged on as so).
I purchased BitDefender total security shortly after this occurred (was running AVG free before). I have also ran Avast, Malwarebytes, registry mechanic, regcure, and Hijack This since my purchase of BitDefender...they have picked up small things here and there but none have encountered and viruses/malware that were the culprit.
Anyone have a solution for me?

Answer:Touchpad & Keyboard Issues

Using Registry Mechanic and RegCure is going to cause you grief.

Stay completely away from registry cleaners. They're too aggressive and will detect valid registry entries as invalid. The end result from "fixing" them is some programs that no longer work and a damaged operating system.

1. Enable the ELAN Smartpad registry trick as discussed in this article (the trick should work on both platforms).
2. Uninstall the ELAN Touchpad driver and observe (you can always re-install it back under the D:\Drivers\Touchpad folder or from the Y50 download page).

Recently I have installed and uninstalled a program that was for transfering info from my PC to my Cell phone. Once it was uninstalled, and the PC restarted the next morning, the touchpad and keyboard of my acer Aspire 5100 have become unresponsive. I am using a USB mouse and keyboard and everything works great other than the sound. I checked my Device Manager and found exclamation marks by the following:

AMD Turion 64 [email protected] mobile tech TL-50(Processes)
Generic PnP Monitor(Monitors)
ATI I/O Comm Processor LPC controller, HD audio controller, UMBus Root Bus Enumerator(System devices)

I checked all exclamation marks for updates, no change.
There is a pop-up that states "No audio output device installed". I have preformed a system restore to a Week before the issue existed and it persists. At this point its just getting arrogant at the fact that I must carry around a usb optical mouse and a bulky usb Key Board.

Can Anyone Help? I'm Near Wits End!!

Lenovo Ideapad Z580 for about 2 weeks ago and whilst I really like it there are a few problems with it. Certain keys on the keyboard only work intermittently, namely the 'a' the 'o' and the 'e' and occasionally other keys too. This makes typing a real problem as I have to continually keep going back to correct things. I'm a proficient typist and haven't experienced this type of problem before on any other machine. Also the touchpad is so sensitive it keeps activating icons when it passes over them without any need to click. It jumps the pointer to another part of the document and sets off on it's own journey without any input from me! It also keeps swiping in the charms bar then the Start window when I'm in the middle of working ? REALLY annoying! Any ideas please? I don't want to have to take it back as 'not fit for purpose' if it's just a simple thing to correct. Thanks

Answer:Z580 touchpad and keyboard issues

hi hamchris,
Welcome to the Forums.
Regarding the issues that you're experiencing:
1. Try to boot in Safe Mode and observe if the keys on the keyboard only work intermittently
    - if it is, there's most likely a problem with the keyboard and you need to send it for service).
    - if all of the keys work ok, perform a clean boot and observe it in normal mode
2. The touch sensitivity is probably activating the double tapping feature, try to adjust the sensitivity of the touchpad by navigating to Control Panel (large icon view) > Mouse
For Synaptics Touchpad:Spoiler (Highlight to read)
For ELAN Touchpad:Spoiler (Highlight to read)
3. The Edge Swipe gesture is most likely trigerring the charms bar, check this thread on how to turn off the touchpad gestures.
Hope this helps

I just swapped a hard drive from a laptop with a busted screen to a laptop that works fine. Well, it did work fine until I activated Windows. The keyboard all of a sudden stopped working and the buttons below the touchpad won't work either.
I can't find any keyboard drivers for Windows 7 on Sony's website and the touchpad drivers didn't seem to work. A Windows update didn't work, either.

Sony Vaio VGN-NR498E
Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit

I desperately need this laptop up and running as soon as possible.

Compaq V6000 Vista Home, (32 bit) service pack 2. Computer about four years old. Motherboard replaced about four months ago because of graphic chips issue.

After a period of time / 30 min or so(?) (varies) the touchpad stops working. The blue power light continues to stay on, indicating the pad is still ?turned on? but the pad and buttons don't function. When the touchpad goes into this state, the icon on the bottom toolbar disappears. I also loose all sound, although the speaker icon remains.

When in this state the touchpad blue power light stays on and pushing the touchpad power button has no affect. (it should turn it off and illuminate an orange light)

The touch pad will also go into this state if the computer goes into the hibernate or sleep mode. One interesting thing, when in sleep or hibernate mode, you can awaken the computer by touching the touchpad surface, indicating to me that the pad is working until the computer comes ?awake.? After it wakes up, the blue blight is still on but the touchpad is inoperable.

If the touchpad is working, you can enter the sleep mode, return and the touchpad will continue to function normally.

To restore the touchpad and sound, the computer must be restarted. After that, everything works fine for a while. (time varies)

I can plug in a USB mouse to get around this issue.

I have done extensive research on Google. This issue has been happening at least since 2009. (although I didn't run across the sound issue mentioned) ... Read more

Hello Guys,

this is a very strange problem im experiencing on a Acer Aspire 3000

i reinstalled xp home from scratch, and the touchpad is not working, nor the keyboard, you can get some movement if you press the keyboard and the touchpad. very little though, and keys are not typing at all. but USB mouse & keyboard is fine.

This problem existed before, and this is why i ran a full reinstallation. The other thing is when i right click on my computer and go to preperties, nothing happens. so i cant even see device manager, i cant launch device manager from system in control panel either...and start+R then mmc devmgmt.msc doesnt work either...
im getting an error about the files being missing.

I have reinstalled twice with two different xp home disks, one full and the other a Dell disk

yet...when im in a cloning software interface...or linux ...the touchpad and keyboard work fine.

i tested my hard drive which passed
and i also switched the memory with known working good RAM...same problem

and on top of it...most times you cant shut the laptop down by holding in the power have to pull out the battery.

i have also installed the drivers for the touchpad from acers web site...which didnt do any justice.

im starting to think the motherboard is faulty...just wanted to get some input before i blast it with a shotgun, and post the video on you tube!!!

Answer:Keyboard touchpad not working in XP Home

i also loaded the bios default setings, it didnt help...also installed win 7 which crashes on startup
but the touchpad was working fine the whole way through setup...strange!!!

I purchased a G580 laptop in August and only recently began using the keyboard while traveling.  It is absolutely impossible to use!  The cursor jumps around and suddenly highlights paragraphs so that the next key I hit deletes forever the paragraph!  I thought my wrist might be on the touchpad or the laptop was overcharged, but this happens also when I have very little charge on the machine.  Could anyone help me? I'm very frustrated. (written with many corrections to my keyboard games!)

Whenever I flip the screen back to use the P40 as a tablet and then when I flip it back to laptop mode, sometimes the keyboard and mouse will not respond. It's as if the computer doesn't notice that the screen is in laptop mode and does not reactivate the keyboad and touchpad. I have to reset the laptop multiple times or close the lid and open it up again several times to get them to work again. Whenever I restart the computer the keyboard lights will turn on during startup but turn back off whenever I get to the sign in screen. I have found no pattern that consistently works to reactivate the keyboard/touchpad. I am also having an issue that when the computer is in tablet mode, it will not re-orient the screen when I change positions (like from landscape to portrait orientation). I think these issues might be something related to the sensors on  the computer not working properly... Anyone else having this problem? Any known solutions? Thanks for any help. Walter

Hi Everyone:

I have a Toshiba A85 S-107 Satellite laptop. The keyboard and touch pads are acting weirdly, a little too weird to describe here. Basically the keyboard won't work at all and when I try to use it in Word, for example, it doesn't type but random windows open up when I hit keys. The touchpad works OK in that the mouse goes where I want it to but the buttons also do weird things when pressed. Since the problem began the keyboard worked fine once after a restart and it ALWAYS works perfectly in Command Mode. I tried to get it to work in Safe Mode but no good.

I've cleaned a lot of crap out of my drive and did all the usual virus scans and it doesn't help. Someone suggested I reinstall the keyboard driver but I have no idea where to find it and Google searches for it turn up nothing. Any ideas appreciated.

Hi everyone. Yesterday, my Asus Q550L laptop completed a Win 10 auto update. I restarted my laptop as instructed and when my system rebooted, the keyboard and touchpad would not respond. It wouldn't let me login to Win 10 and even seemed like it was not responding while Windows was booting up. I finally was able to gain access my using the onscreen keyboard via touchscreen. I use an external Microsoft mouse, and that still seems to work okay. I looked in the device manager and both my touchpad and keyboard drivers have exclamation marks on them. I tried updating the driver, but it said they were the newest/best available. I tried deleting the driver and letting windows rediscover them, but got the same result. I refuse to believe the the keyboard and touchpad took a dump at the exact same time, so this has to be related to Windows 10 right? Any help/advice is welcome and thanks in advance!

Answer:Windows 10 keyboard and touchpad not working

Using my phone right now.
Uninstalling Asus Smart Gesture then installing the new one provided by Ivan FR (Google search: asus windows 10 ivan fr) fixed it, but then I noticed my audio driver has an error now, I restarted and all said errors were back. ?
Redoing the method doesn't work.
Guess we'll have to wait for a fix from MS itself
Btw, my lappy's Asus too, X55LN.
First time I ever had a bug with Win10.
Very disappointed right now.
Finally, bump.

I've tried everything! In the bios setup (f2) the keyboard works! I tested the keyboard and touchpad using the rescue and recovery CD and functioned! Is not a physical problem because I put a HD from another T61 and both peripherals are working again! So I think the problem is in the operating system Vista 32bits. Has anyone experienced this? thank you

Answer:The keyboard and the TouchPad stopped working!

Hi, Rabbitvix
I haven't experienced this issue, but the fact that the keyboard works in BIOS but not in the OS indicates a software issue, not hardware. I would recommend booting the machine in Safe Mode to see if this helps. If the TouchPad and the keyboard resume functioning in Safe Mode, then we may be able to solve this issue by removing a driver.
To boot into Safe Mode in Windows Vista:

Start the computer from cold boot.
When the splash screen appears (says "Lenovo) being tapping F8 repeatedly.
Continue tapping F8 until a menu appears.
Select Safe Mode.
Hit Enter.
The computer should now boot to Safe Mode.

Also, one final question: If you plug in an external mouse, does this function well, or does it experience problems as well?
Best of luck,

I'm having a strange problem. The spot you touch up top is not activating or deactivating the touchpad. It is as though it is not connected to the computer anymore. I already updated the drivers to try to fix, didn't work.Under computer propersties>hardware, it shows up as Synaptics PS/2 port toucnpad, with the image of a mouse on the left, if that helps at all. When I right click on it I can't change any settings or properties. And now my laptop keyboard doesnt work, but the logitech keyboard I previously installed with the computer does work, and operates the lights on the laptop keyboard as well. Help would be greatly appreciated.  My product number is WQ615UA#ABAWindows 7Did not recently make any hardware or software changes.
