external hard drive usage

Question: external hard drive usage

I am request info on a better way to back up external hard drives. we would like an automatic back up that would back up new files on a daily basis.

Currently are running Windows 7 home edition,500 gb on a 64 bit laptop. we have approximately 3.5 t< A 1.5t,a 1t,a 500gb,a 320gb, and a 250gb external drives in addition to the 500gb drive on the laptop> of external storage< hard drives, no server as of yet>. We currently save mainly Pictures and art for digital scrappingbooking.

It seems that no matter how many external HD we get they fill up rather quickly.< 3 to 6 months>.

Is there a way to set up software to automatically update new files daily?
I am considering a 2 t external for a back up to the current drives we have.
All of the family pics have been saved to these drives, so a loss we not be good.
We tried mosy but the uploads seem to always get stopped by our Internet provider, because of size.

I appreciate in advance any advice that can be offered

Preferred Solution: external hard drive usage

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:Cpu usage 100% with external firewire hard drive

Hi, I've got a problem with an external firewire hard drive (a Lacie d2 drive). When I try to access the drive in explorer (just browsing through the files and directories) the cpu usage rockets to 100%. Shortly after that explorer freezes, and cpu usage goes back to normal when explorer is shut down. Needless to say that the external drive is pretty much useless for the time being. I reinstalled the OS and the necessary drivers but the problem persists. The computer is a recent one with Win XP as OS. The motherboard only has USB 1.1 support so I bought a firewire-USB2.0 combo card. I just can't get the Lacie drive to work on that computer. The same external hard drive does work normally on another computer (also Win XP as OS, but with a firewire expansion card). If anyone could identify what the problem is, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

I am having a problem with explorer.exe. When I click on certain folders in My Documents, the CPU Usage rockets and it takes ages for the next page to materialise. This is most frequently happening when navigating around my External HD, which for reference is a 320GB Seagate FreeAgent Desktop USB. I have defragmented the C: an D: drives of my computer, despite the fact that the analysis reveals that I don't need to. I have run Spybot S&D, which says that I have nothing malicious to worry about on my computer. Finally, even though I have disconnected my external HD, the slowness has spread to my main hard drives.

I would very much like to know what is going on, and hope that someone might be able to help me. I have attached my HijackThis log file.

Kind regards,
Nyapsta.

Hi there,

I won't get too deeply into the harrowing saga of how two external hard drives of mine died within days of each other. Rather, I'll just say that I would like to do a virus scan on several external hard drives (including/especially the one I just got to replace the others). In other words, I want to find out if there was a virus or something in the material that I'm putting on the hard drives that makes them die. Could this be possible? If so, how can I conduct a virus scan specifically on the external drives?

Thanks!
Sonya

Is it usb powered? If so does the hard drive spin up? Are there any clicking noises from the drive?

I want to get an external hard drive/dvd burner combo if there is such a thing. To make this question as simple as possible...I need a hard drive that my camera can be plugged into with the firewire. I also need the hard drive that is able to plug in to the USB2 slot on my computer, because
my new Dell doesn't seem to tolerate a firewire card which I installed and then took out and returned to the store. It froze my computer and I tried everything to stabilize it but had no luck. It did work long enough to download 10 min. or so of video and I burned that onto a cd. Thats when I found out I had a dvd-rom not a dvd burner......long story I know. Sorry. I just want to figure out the most economical way now to save my movies and burn them to dvd also using either another external dvd burner or maybe there is a hard drive/dvd burner combo?? Or should I just get two separate externals?
Again: I need the hard drive/burner to plug into my computer with usb2.
Then the firewire from the camera would go into the hard drive/burner to download the movies.

Does anyone know of software that will clone one external hard drive to another hard drive. I have tried by attaching both external hardrives to a computer but Acronis will only find the destination drive and not the source drive. any ideas would be great Ojas

Answer:Any software that will clone one external hard drive to another external hard

What kind of data is on the HDD ? ?Are you saying that Aceonis does not rcognise both externals ? ?If not you can hool up only the HDD you want cloned and have Acronis create and save the image to your internal for now...then power down...unhook that external...and hook up the blank external...power up and clone away.NOTE: I highly suggest verifying the image before cloning...takes a bit longer buy well worth it.It's under the Tools section in Acronis.

The old hard drive is from an xp laptop, and I can aquire another xp laptop if I can clone this way. Perhaps if I set the enclosure hard drive as master? All ideas are greatly appreciated. Hey guys!

My Zune 80gb stopped working a while back. It wouldn't charge. So I thought I would take out the hard drive and use it as an external 80gb hard drive. So I bought an 1.8" ZIF encolsure for it and installed the hard drive into it.

All appears good with the installation. When I plug the hard drive into the PC the light on the hard drive enclosure comes on and stays on & the disk starts spinning. Then Windows Vista does the whole "Install new Hardware" thing and calls it a "Disk Drive" and a "USB Mass Storage Device" and says hardware is installed and ready for use.

But the problem is I can't seem to access the drive. I can't find it anywhere. It doesn't show up as a drive I can use or anything. I tried a third party partitioning prgram to try and find the disk so I could reformat it but it wouldn't it couldn't find it either. I even plugged the drive into my Mac thinking that Disk Utility might be able to recognize it and let me wipe it, but the Mac doesn't recognize it as anything.

Back in Vista, Using Device Manager, Vista notices the drive under the "Disk Drives" option as a "Disk Drive" and that it is elecronically signed by Microsoft (since it has the Zune firmware on it) but I can't do anything with it ... And this is the only place where I can see that the drive even exists. I can't reformat it or anything.

Can anyone help me? I thought I read somewhere... Read more

I recently formatted my c drive and now i am reinstalling all the software. I keep all the setups of software in my external hard drive. For installing the software I coy the setup folder of the required software on my laptop, then install it.

Is straightaway installing the software by accessing the external hard drive okay? Does it make any difference in the installation time or any reduction in life of hard disk performance.

Or should I always install through my laptop hard drive?

I am running windows 8.1 pro

Answer:installation software from external hard drive or internal hard drive

Your method is as good as any. If it works, keep doing it.

I have a hard drive enclosure for my old hp laptop's hard drive but the two drive have different connectors. There is a lot to choose from. Any USB SATA external hard drive enclosure should work. Since i don't live in the US i don't know where the best place to buy such a enclosure would be in your case. If you cannot find any maybe someone else that live in the US could help you out.

I bought a esata-sata cable and tried to connect a esata external hard drive througn a sata 2nd hard drive caddy. The result is that my T42 can not detect the external hard drive. The caddy, cable, and the external hard drive are all functional with other setups. As I know, the signal of esata and sata are the same. It should be just passing through. I don't understand why it fails. I observed that both the leds on the caddy and above the caddy are lighting when I boots T42. However, both leds dims after that. Any suggestion?PS. I know using a pcmcia will be easier. However, several reviews confirmed that the writing speed is limited to 30 MB/s through pcmcia. The writing speed on the caddy is at least 55 MB/s when I tested it with a 2.5 in hard drive.

I need an external hard drive for taking regular backups of all of my data.
When i searched the internet I got two options:
1. Porable HDD [high cost, slower speed but don't need external power]
2. Desktop HDD [low cost, higher speed but need external power]

I want to know that...
1. Which hard disk's live longer? Porable or Desktop.
2. I heared that pulling off USB cable of Portable HDD may cause data lose because it also supplies power to hdd.
What will happpen if Power goes off from Desktop HDD? Will my data/Hard disk remain protected?
3. Level of safety of data on moving or shaking on both Desktop and Portable HDD.
4. Can we install os and boot from portable and desktop external hdd?

Answer:Need Advice : External Desktop Hard drive vs Portable Hard drive?

Unless you really need to go portable with a Laptop .. I'd not use a USB powered External.
You cannot boot from a USB External .. But there's another option if you're capable of physically changing HDDs ..

Get a good external Enclosure (with a fan for cooling) .. Install a good HDD ... with a 5 year warranty
and make the HDD in the enclosure a bootable backup .. where you could swap HDDs if/when needed ..

my macbook pro is currently our of commission due to a mishap with a cup of water. the person i spoke to on the phone at the apple store said to have the hard drive transferred to an external one in case they need to reformat it. is this even possible if my laptop won't turn on?

Answer:transfer data from laptop hard drive to external hard drive

Depends on the type of water damage has been done.
If your laptop has been a small puddle of water for a little bit of time, yes it will mess up your hdd's connectors and possibly damage it.
If the water spill was like a splash on the keyboard and quickly cleaned up, you have a good chance of the hdd working.
Just depends on what got damaged badly enough for something not to turn on for quite awhile.

Also get rid of that macbooks battery, I have a bad feeling it might not work with your macbook anymore.

So I want to clone one external 2TB with another. So one drive is the main use one and another the backup one. So I copy everything over to backup and i store the backup at another house and then I start using the main: deleting and adding/editing files. What is the best software or whatever to allow me, after some time, synchronize/clone the externals again without deleting all on the backup drive and recopying? (main to backup) and make them clones again? ..Adding and deleting or replacing any nonidentical files.. Like where i can press a button on some software and it do the work for me.
Sorry if this is confusing

Answer:Best external to external hard drive synchronized backup plan?

There's a bunch of applications that can do that.

They all work pretty much the same way, but would differ in how easy they are to understand and configure---the interfaces would differ and the help files would differ.

I use FreeFileSync from sourceforge.net.

Others are Syncback, Folder Clone, Karen's Replicator, FBackup, Second Copy, and Synchromagic.

You should be able to configure them to do one or the other of the following:

1: If you delete or modify a file on the "original", it will also be deleted or modified on the backup.

2: If you delete a file on the "original", it will be retained on the backup. If you modify a file, both the modified and unmodified file will be retained on the backup.

It's up to you which choice you prefer. I use the first method, which is often called "mirroring"--one drive is an exact match of the other.

I am unsure about what happens after you convert your internal hard drive to an external hard drive... Let's say the internal HDD was your only laptop HDD and you replaced it with a SSD. If you convert your old internal HDD to an external HDD, what would happen when you open it up on your newly installed OS (on the SSD)?

I am trying to download a new OS but us my old internal HDD as an external drive just to access specific files. However, I don't want any other data/programs/settings/etc. downloaded onto my new SSD. Do I need to delete my old OS when I convert my old internal HDD into an external HDD or does the OS simply get "reduced" to a bunch of files that I will see on my newly installed OS?

If anyone is able to clarify these questions that would be fantastic!

Yes
it will just be seen as a data drive and you would need to goto the directory for your data

Hi guys,

I'm new on any sort of forums so go easy if it's a stupid question..but here goes.

Me and my brother built me a new computer from scratch (he did the building - i did the watching).

To cut a long story short - I purchased an internal hard drive from Overclockers UK. It's a Samsung 1TB drive. I also have a 64 Solid-state drive in there as my primary hard drive that Windows was installed on and a couple of programs are installed on. My storage disk (the 1TB disk) is for all my music/films etc. Whenever I drag and drop a file into the Samsung hard-drive - it copies it rather than moves it instantly.

When I had a laptop, I had 3 external hard drives and this is the way it copied files onto them.

Does anyone know how I can get the internal drive to stop acting like an external drive?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Internal Hard Drive acting like an External Hard Drive

This is the way it works. I have an 80GB SSD and an internal HDD and the same happens if the file/folder is large enough. If you just copy a few MBs, you will not see the window with the green stripe running. But if e.g. you copy 500MBs, you will see it. It physically moves the data. That is different if you copy on the same volume from one folder to another. Then it only makes an entry in the MFT.

I earlier posted about the Aspire AST690-UP925A having 250GB hard drive. I since then contacted Aspire chat support. Apparently, not being tech savy we didn't realize 250 gb hard drive only 112 c drive is able to be used, the d data drive holds the programs to run the computer.

I didn't mean can I use the external hard drive internally. I meant, if I hook it up externally would it work in place of the internal hard drive that is nearly full except for around 10 GB?

So, unfortunately the computer isn't as big as you believe. But...I wanted to know if I purchase (I was looking at western digital elements 2TB external hard drive). Can we use it for this computer. It will not run itunes or anything like that, but we can obviously go online.

My brother wants to buy a new computer, but I know that is probably not the way to go. Should we get an internal hard drive installed and other memory or something or can we use the external hard drive?

I would appreciate any informed help on this since we do not no technical info on computers. Can't really afford to buy another computer right now.

Thanks in advance

Answer:Can external hard drive be used for full internal hard drive?

If you want to take out the drive from external hard drive case and install it in your desktop/laptop, then usually you can. Usually external hard drives are just ordinary hard drives accompanied by some extra controller to make it able to "talk" via general ports (e.g. USB). However I am not familiar with digital elements 2TB , so I can not confirm it. But I do have WD external drive, which I had positively confirm that its real drive is just ordinary hard drive.

Note that if you decide to do this, I suggest to find experience people to work on extracting the drive. If you do it yourself you will risk to damage it, and you don't want that since usually opening the closure means voiding the warranty.

I currently am running windows 8.1 x64 bit, and I am thinking of copying my entire hard drive (consisting of C & D drives using a total of 929.2 GB of space. And wanting to get a Western Digital External Hard Drive with 1.5 TB of space. I have been led to believe that windows 8.1 has a utility called System Image Back Up Utility (located in the Control Panel). I have also been led to believe that this can be done completely using a bit by bit copy of the entire hard drive (programs, files, drivers, apps, utilities, etc), But I can not fine enough info on doing this. And there are still questions, such as How do you transfer the copy from the external hard drive back onto the PC if it should completely crash? (I do have a five disk recovery set I made when I purchased my PC, but still want an additional source of a back up system.) I can not find the procedures for copying the copy from the external hard drive to the crashed PC, and are ther better and safer programs out there to use instead of the windows system Image back up utility? I would add that I am somewhat of an intermediate user, useing PCs since windows 95. but there are obviously issues that I need to research before attempting something this complicated and advanced. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance !

A description of System Image Backup can be found here. If you want both C and D, I would suggest a clone program. Both Seagate and WD offer a free Disk Wizard Program. With the cloning process, you use an external case to perform the clone. When disaster strikes, you swap out the drives, and continue. Personally, I make clones of my primary desktops every 30-45 days.

Windows 7 desk top computer stopped during use. It would not restart when button pressed. External power supply ok. Possible internal Power Supply Unit failure. Can the pc hard drive data be backed up to an external USB hard drive enclosure before testing to find the fault in these circumstances?

Answer:Hard drive backup to external USB hard drive enclosure

Yes, most HDD is use on laptop and desktops units are pretty standard. The desktops use 3.5 inch internal drives and the laptops are mostlt 2.5 inch. The Sata interface is almost universal. Suitable enclosures are sold by major vendors. Be aware that the very lost cost kits are not real enclosure, just the power and interface components. Not recommended. To easy make a mistake. You will need a working PC or laptop to read the data. And enough free drive space to store your data files. Recovering program files is not piratical, unless the programs were portable programs. Which is not likely. This video is basic and helpful. (Ignore the lead in advertisement.)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLLQusrmzvIAs you will see in then video, you can buy an enclosure for any starred hard drive. So just pick out a good enclosure and you can get you data back!EDIT: On of the best tutorials I have seen lately. He makes it plain and simple and very useful information. Geek-9pm recommends you watch. I'm not sure if I should have put this in "Hardware" or not so...
I am, by far, a professional at this so hang in there with me if I confuse you. A few months ago my children broke the screen on my laptop and for a few weeks I was trying to use the External Monitor so it would show up on a monitor my sister gave me. Well I finally got that up and working however, now when I connect my external hard drive to the laptop, it will not show up on the desktop monitor. (The external hard drive is Western Digital).

This external monitor is a new thing for me, actually I knew you could do it but didn't try it as an option until my nephew - who is much younger than me - thought of it lol. Anyway, I have pictures and such on my external hard drive that were put onto the external by the very laptop I am using. I'm not totally sure of the montior I am using, all I can tell you at the moment is it's a Dell. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A135 S266; the laptop has Vista Home Basic (32 bit) and I believe the desktop monitor is running with Vista too but I'm not sure if that's important since it is only serving as a "view." Anyway, I would love some help with why the drive may not be working with this set up.

Thanks,
Kerri

Answer:Help with External Monitor and External Hard Drive

This may seem like a silly question, have you tried the HD on another PC to see if the issue is with that?
Also, are you saying it's not showing up in 'My Computer', or are you not getting the option to open files?

It should have about 465GB, what are you seeing?

You will not have 500GB due to the conversion between binary and decimal for reporting sizes.

Gday

I have emailed Paragon and am awaiting there reply, but you guys seem to know a lot more and try and solve the problem

Up to this point I have used either Acronis or Paragon for my backups, I prefer Paragon over Acronis, mainly because the restore by Paragon is far quicker.

I have both bootable CD's, but in this instance I would like to concentrate on Paragon.

I downloaded Paragon's Advanced Recovery CD. 2009 Build 6730. Put it in my rom and booted ....... looked at a black screen for 10 minutes. Removed it and rebooted, it got stuck at the loading of Vista, then I got another black screen no hard drive movement.

Rebooted again, this time with the regular Paragon bootable CD. It booted into the recovery console.

Now this is where things go from bad to worse. I tried finding my OS, after a lengthy period I received an error disk 2 i/o fault!!! ....... no operating system found.

Now disk 2 is my external hard drive where my backups are kept.

So I rebooted with the CD in, went into the recovery console and clicked on "safe restore", after playing the waiting game I get a message disk 2 i/o fault!!!.

Took out the Paragon CD, put in the Vista one, tried a repair, but there was no OS to repair .

So I installed Vista, and because I didn't want to have to reinstall all of my programs again (yer lazy I know, but that's what backup's are for).

Checked with the fresh install, that my two external hard drives, had there drivers and were present. They were ... Read more

I installed Windows XP Pro when I had Windows XP Home. And now I found that I've almost totally used up my hard drive. I assume that when I installed the updated version of Windows I didn't format the drive correctly. Here's my question: how can I remove the old operating system with losing everything and having to start all over.

Answer:hard drive usage

Two things you can easily do:a. Use a tool like WinDirStat - http://download.cnet.com/WinDirStat/3000-2248_4-10614593.htmlto see what files are taking up space, how much, and where.b. Run the chkdsk /r cmmand, which will check the file system and accurately summarize your partition free space.Louis

My laptop (Lenovo Y510p) is always at 100% disk usage for the first 15-20 minutes of starting up, and for intermittent periods afterwards. During this period, everything essentially freezes including the Start Menu, Task Manager, and all other apps running. After about 5 minutes, the hard drive "catches up" and everything starts working again.

The strange part is that when looking at Task Manager / Resource Monitor, the total read/write of the hard drive does not appear to be very high - ie it will be at 100% disk usage but the highest program is reading/writing maybe 0.1MB/s.

This is causing the laptop to become borderline unusable. I have to leave the laptop running in order for it to be usable, as shutting it down / putting it to sleep will cause the hard drive to go back to 100%, and everything comes to a standstill. Please help!

I've attached some pictures which should illustrate what's going on hopefully.

Specs: Lenovo Y510p, 2 years old, running Windows 10 Home 64-bit (upgraded from Windows 8.1).

I had recently built a custom PC with the following specs:

CPU - i7 6700k @ 4.5GHz
GPU - Palit GTX 1080 Jetstream 8gb @ 2100MHz
Motherboard - Asrock Z170 Extreme4
Ram - 16gb Viper Elite DDR4 3000mhz (8x2)
SSD - HyperX Savage 120gb
HDD - Seagate Baracuda 1tb
PSU - Corsair CX 500w

The PC is amazing, it performed beautifully in everything I threw at it, the only weak point was Windows 10.. I started to get random OS hangs without cause when playing games or doing general browsing, I thought I had an issue with my GPU or something but it turns out after some investigating that it was a Windows problem as when the hangs would happen I quickly would open task manager and see that my drive usage was at 50% having two drives this meant one of them was under 100% usage and so I wanted to find out what was doing it, I looked into performance monitor and other programs to try monitor usage but nothing other than the typical system process was using it.

I did the normal fixes, disable Superfech and Windows Search etc. Neither helped, I clean installed 3 times, no luck. I even safe booted (As told by Microsoft to do so) and the problem still persisted so that proved it wasn't an application causing the problem it was a Windows 10 problem. I tried upgrading to the latest anniversary edition of Windows 10 and the problem literally got 10 times worse, from what were 2-5 second PC hangs at random throughout the day turned into 10-15 second hangs every 10 minutes.

[Seriously need help] External hard disk causes hard drive failures & OS crashes
The thread is rather long. Only read what you think important. Skip the rest!

We have a serious but mysterious problem. We have spent already one week but drawing a blank.
Two hard drives have been crashed and failed (unreadable). One computer has hung a few times unexpectedly and had one weird restart (no memory dump produced).
I suspect all the recent problems have to do with the new USB external hard disk (Buffalo MiniStation Lite: HD-PE250U2).

Formatting USB external hard disk

Originally I would like to use the program given by Buffalo to format the external drive once but we failed. We simply used Windows to reformat the drive into NTFS. I did not use the TurboSpeed advertised by Buffalo, or run its free program.

We were trying to help a friend to backup data on an old drive, about a few years old. We plugged in the Buffalo USB portable hard drive and transferred a whole lot of files to the drive. Several cop/cut-and-paste operations were active at that time. The whole system completely froze up. It doesn't respond at all. Only a hard restart could help.
Restarted. Tranferred again. Several cop/cut-and-paste operations were active.

Just got a WD elements external drive, 120GB. My father has two computers at his business, and he has not backed them up. A failure of one of the computers means he wouldn't be able to perform day-to-day operations, so a clone of the hard drives is vital.

So I did a little bit of googling, but there isn't one freeware solution that people recommend. I've partitioned it into two equally sized, 55GB partitions. The hard drives that are to be backed up are both 40GB. Anyone know which software is best for cloning the hard drive? I'm comfortable with using command line if need be.

Answer:Cloning multiple hard drives to one external hard drive?

For small single operations I use Clonezilla LiveCD. It's not command line based, but it is text user interface based, so it looks kind of old school. It works great, though.

If you want to get crazy and set up a dedicated box for this, FOG (Linux based, requires a Linux install and a stand-alone computer to act as a server) could do the trick too.

I'd start small with Clonezilla LiveCD and if you want something heavier duty, check out FOG. I use both almost daily. Both are free/open source as well.

As with anything else, do a ton of testing on a practice machine so you get the feel of it. It sounds like this data is critical, so don't use a production machine as your guinea pig to feel out the software.

I have a 120GB hard drive; when purchased it was already partitioned, 60/50/10. The 50 partition is called "D" drive, which is completely empty, according to explorer, but when viewed through properties, it only displays 40GB as available and 10 is in use. Does anyone have an explanation, why?Cheers!

Answer:Phantom usage of my hard drive.

Make sure that your windows explorer is set to display hidden and system files and look again. If this does not help then drop down to DOS and type "DIR D:/S" without the quotation marks and see if anything shows up.As a last resort (and you are very sure that there are no files your computer needs on drive D) you could always format it and see if that solves your problem.

I have a Toshiba Tecra TE2100 1.8 GHZ P4 laptop with 768 MB RAM. I purchased an external enclosure for a Maxtor 60 Gig IDE hard drive. After starting Windows XP everything is running normal. As soon as I turn on the hard drive my CPU usage skyrockets to 100% and everything runs incredibly slow if at all and the computer won't shut down. When I turn off the drive things return to normal after about 15 minutes. Sometimes Windows comes up and says the drive is installed and everything runs except for the fact that there is no drive letter, but I believe I found a workaround for this in these forums. If I could just solve this CPU problem I believe everything will be ok. Could these problems be related? I have spent hours trying to figure this one out.

You should try to fond out what is using 100% CPU. It could be your antivirus program or Windows itself or the USB storage drivers. Could be a damaged filesystem on the drive too. Or maybe the drive is bad..

This is a new one for me, migrating data from an XP system to a new Windows 7 Home Premium system. On small drive previous system I always dump the entire contents into a folder for customers in case down the road they remember some strange location where they had some data stored.

Windows 7 shows 11.9 GB free of 38.2 GB (approx 26 GB used) connected with an IDE to USB cable, but when I dragged the entire drive to a folder it was only showing about 4 GB worth of files. Discovered the user had made files private trying to implement a "secure XP system". I took ownership at the drive level for all subfolders and objects and still am only seeing 16 GB of files . . . somewhere are 10 GB of missing data.

The XP system is not bootable so I can't do a comparison on the actual running system either.

User is a bare bones knowledge user and I don't see any evidence of a TrueCrypt installation.

Comments? Questions? Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi All,

I have a customer with W10 that is next to unusable.

Is there something out there in the Windows 10 world right now that would cause 100% hard drive usage, slowing a computer down to a crawl?

I found three anti viruses duking it out and fix that. But CPU goes to 100% (system) and drags the computer to a crawl. Pulling the power plug resets it for a while.

I have not found any root kits or the like.

I am wondering if this is one of M$'s endless full rebuild updates?

Any words of wisdom?

Hey guys!
Please don't bash me for posting this (as I can see others have posted about it also). I just want to make sure I can get as many ideas as possible, before I do a clean install/new hdd.
_______
I am helping a family friend fix their desktop. It is only about 3 years old and has a AMD quad core processor, 8GB Ram, 1TB HDD(500GB used) - They also have a smaller 2nd HDD - Though I am not sure what the contents are for. They told me the computer has been running very slow since October.
___________
So I did my usual computer cleanup steps:
1. Malware removal (Spybot, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Hitman Pro, Emisoft Emergency kit) - All in safe mode - nothing serious found.
2. Ran CCleaner (Cleaner,Registry,Startup) / Deleted temp files
3. Checked for unwanted programs - found none
4. Google Chrome is their browser - no plugins/extensions to remove
5. They have AVG Internet Security, scans only at 9pm everyday
_________
At this point, I still felt the computer to be very sluggish - After looking at task manager, I noticed that the disk was always at, or close to, %100 usage. **No 1 process was hogging it all**
**Decided to let Defraggler to Defrag the PC - And that is where I am at now** (Gives me time to research/jot down things to try - will be doing further work remotely on the PC(Teamviewer))

Hi all,

After almost losing most of my data I want to start a good back-up routine.

My computer has two internal 3TB hard-drives. I have ordered two external USB 3 3TB hard-drives.

I thinking about buying HDClone 'Standard Edition', but I want to make sure it's right for me before I buy.

I want it to be a completely exact copy.

Does HDClone clone 3TB hard-drives? (I saw that some software only clones hard-drives up to 1TB)

Do you think I should buy it?

Thanks!

Answer:Cloning two 3TB hard drive to two 3TB external hard drives

Remember that Cloning means the Target Drives are PRECISELY "the same OR larger" than the original drives. If the original drivers are 2,974,442 formatted and the Target drives are 2,974,308, you MAY have problems. It doesn't take a lot to be 'smaller', in other words.

Before I plan on software, I make sure the drives fit this important criteria.

I can test out some freebie stuff (Macrium Reflect is one example, or if I'm getting Seagates or WDs, they often include a clone-capable package themselves). I don't want to discourage buying good software - I find the best packages have extensive partitioning services, too - making smaller or larger partitions based on Actual Usage rather than some synthetic boundary.

We do a lot of cloning for Boot SSDs, and our practice is to buy two identical drives. Build one up, load all the software, let the user mess it for a few days, then clone it to the 'cold' identical unit. And then make the users switch that 2nd drive for actual usage. If there's a problem, then the original's intact.

Since your 3Tb drives probably aren't your boot drives but are 'just data drives', I wonder about the time spent cloning instead of "just copying what I want to save" directly.

I bought a larger Gig USB external drive to copy all of my files onto in case of a problem with my windows XP Pro Drive and when I try to copy or paste it over to the external drive it gets to some files and says it can not copy because they are in use and nothing is running at the time I am trying to copy everything off my computer to the external hard drive. Is there another way to do this without having to buy a program I can not afford to do on social security?

Answer:copy internal hard drive to external hard dri

What are you trying to copy, the entire HDD contents? What would be the point of that? You can't run Windows or any programs from the external drive using the copy/paste method & you can't copy windows files that are in use. If you want to create an entire backup of your system, there's plenty of free software available for just that purpose. We need an better explanation of what it is you want to do.

Here's what I am working on.

Dell: P-233 Latitude Laptop

I noticed that when I hit Diplay info it shows this:

Partition: C:
Status: A
Type: Pri DOS
Mbytes: 2047
Usage: 66%

What Im concerned about is why does it show 66% usage? Does this mean it is only using 66% of the Hard drive? And if so how do I set it to get 100%?
When I set the percentage to l00 I notice it will still say only 66%...

Thanks......

Also: What WIN operating system in your opinion would work best with this computer being only a P233? I see it says it was built for WIN95/NT....

thanks again

Answer:Dell P-233 Laptop - Hard Drive Usage says only 66% - Need Help!

Sounds like you used an old version of FDISK or you did not enable large disk support when it asked in FDISK. Windows 95 at first only support a 2 Gig partition. Later versions support bigger partitions. What Windows are you using? If 95 you will have to just create an extended partition and format it. If Windows 98 you must use the windows 98 Fdisk to delete and create a new partition and don't forget to enable large disk support.

Hello all,

I couldn't determine whether this is being caused by the OS or the Hardware, but here goes. I recently decided my HD was due a reformatting. I transferred files my clean (virus-scanned) files onto an external HD and back again after reinstalling Windows XP (SP2).
Reinstalled the most crucial drivers first, and whilst reinstalling various applications, I saw a small notification pop-up in the bottom right informing me that my C drive is running low on storage, then again soon after informing me it's critically low.

Bringing up the properties of my C drive displays the following:

Bringing up the properties of the contents of the C drive (including hidden and protected operating system files/folders) displays the following:
I also opened up disk defragmenter to see if that had anything to say which might help, and though it reports the same inaccurate usage for C, in the top pane, the graphical chart seen at the bottom would indicate that around 50% of C Drive space is unused:
I've never encountered anything like this before and really have no idea how to further analyse the problem; any suggestions apprechiated, thanks.

Hello all :)
Our son recently bought me a new computer, a Dell XPS 8920. Though I've read about and watched some YouTube vieos, and not being a computer guru, I'm having a difficult time understanding how to set up the OS (C) & D Drive. I realize you cannot download a ton of programs onto the OS (C) and have to revert to the D Drive. Especially if one uses a lot of photoshop programs like I do. I believe I understand you can set up a Folder on the C Drive that will direct to a specific program on the D Drive but, I'll be darned if I can figure out the process?
Anyway, is there a book, something online, I can download so as to understand how this Drive system differs from the standard C Drive when it comes to downloading multiple programs? What I have found is short on details and seems to presume one knows a lot about computers...which I do not. I wish the new PC had come with a users manual of some kind. So, any help will be greatly appreciated so I can finally start using this XPS properly.

Desktop units will have a separate power brick to provide the power required. Portable units use power from the USB cable connection. If you intend carrying it around a lot with a laptop then portable is the one to go for. If you intend using it with a desktop as you suggest then you won't mind having a permanent power supply block (?)Hope that helps.

I bought a new HP G60-445DX notebook PC and bought a Gigaware hard drive enclosure so I could hook up my old hard drive to my new laptop and remove the files that I want (pictures mostly). When I hook up the drive to my laptop I hear the hard drive spinning and I get a message on my toolbar (Safely Remove Hardware) so I know the computer knows that there is something connected but when I go to "MY COMPUTER" the drive does not show up. I can see the hard drive when I go into Device Manager... it's listed as ST910082 8A USB Device. When I double click on it it says that "This device is working Properly" . The driver is the latest driver (6.06.6002.18005). I've uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it and still nothing. My new computer is running VISTA and the old hard drive was running XP if that matters. Now I've tried to reinstall the hard drive in my old laptop and hook that laptop up to an old desktop screen and kept getting the message "PXE-E61 Media Test Failure" so I dont think the drive is being recognized there either? The original problem with my old laptop was just that the screen was shot.......then I removed the hard drive........I didn't know at the time that all I had to do was hook up my laptop to another screen and I probably... Answer:Old hard drive for external hard drive on new laptop

I looked in Disk Management and the external hard drive is there but it doesn't have a letter . Layout: Simple, Type: Basic, under file systems it's blank and under status: Healthy (Active, Primary Partition). If I right click on it all the choices are greyed out and the only ones I'm able to click on are VOLUME and HELP.

Hi,

I have Windows XP. Last week my internal hard drive had a mechanical failure and had to be replaced. I have a Memorex (aka Imation?) external hard drive that I used to back up my files. The first back up I ever did was a full back up of all programs and files, and since then I have backed up incrementally.

Once my new hard drive was installed and operating system etc restored, I plugged in my external hard drive and tried to restore my files. I started with the folder from my first back up and clicked 'Quick Restore'. I followed the instructions and it appeared to be restoring my files, but at the end of the process there was no visible difference. I tried restarting my computer but again, no change to the hard drive content.

My external hard drive came with a brochure but it only talks about how to back up files, not how to restore them. What am I doing wrong?

Cheers,

Bec

I tried installing win 7 on my netbook and there were only 2 partitions available. One was the system and one was the primary. But it wont allow me install on my primary partition or create a new one. It actually will let me install on it but it says not to because the hard drive could fail at any moment. I was wondering If I could take an external usb hd and install the OS on that instead? Does anyone know if that will work?

Answer:Hard drive Failure... External hard drive maybe?

It's unlikely you'll be able to boot from an external USB HDD due to the copy protection measures written into Windows.

If there is not a "trap door" to access the hard drive on the bottom of your netbook, replacing the internal HDD will require removal of the keyboard and some internal cables. Unless you are experienced in disassembling and reassembling small electronics, this is a job best left to a professional tech. Don't get ripped off at Geek Squad or other big chain stores. A reputable independent PC shop should be able to do the work for about $60 labor plus the cost of a new drive.

Hope this helps.

I'm trying to use Norton Ghost to copy my hard drive to a new usb external hard drive. I am trying to use clone in Ghost advanced, but when I get to the section where it asks for source and destination, I see Disk 1 - (c - DISE_backup (d, and for destination I see the same thing. How do I get it to identify my usb hard drive designated as (I in my computer.
If I try backup in Ghost basic, I am able to choose the destination by going to my computer and clicking on the drive, is there a way to do it in advanced Clone?
Is there a better way to copy my old drive to the new one? I'm using win ME, the old drive is 40 gig, and the new one 250 gig Seagate.
Also,I used Seagate disk wizard to install it, and when i click on it in my computer it recognizes it as a 250 gig, does that mean that 250 is usable, or do I have to partition it?
PS
ya know, I actually thought that this was gonna be easy!

Answer:can I copy my hard drive to an external usb hard drive?

I used DriveImage XML (freeby probably availabale here at MG) to copy a backup from my C Drive to a maxtor USB 100Gb USB drive with no probs whatsoever. Moreover I tested it to reinstall to the C Drive for a minor program and it did the job hassle free.
I don't like anything Norton turns out, personal opinion based on bitter experience.
Give Drive image a try!
However I hope you undersand that you cannot boot from the backup - it is only a backup - booting is a different situation altogether

With a lot of external hard drives, they are unfortunately formatted as FAT32 for compatibility with other OS's and systems. FAT32 cannot handle a single file over 4GB

I enabled OneDrive on my computers.

My main computer seemed to get slower and slower.

I clicked on "This PC" and my internal drive was red - showing
about 20 GB space where there had been close to 200 GB a
short time before.

My external drives - one a 1 TB WD was completely filled - 0
available space and the other = a 3 TB WD was pretty close
to full as well...

I went nuts and tried to find what was going on...ended up
deleting boatloads of files/folders just to create some space.

Finally, found that OD kept copying various files/folders over
and over and over again ... placing them in my C drive and the
two external drives... there seemed to be no rhyme or reason
for the selection of the files/folders that were continually being
replicated.

Scared the crap out of me....

I'd asked Windows techs for assistance and each time they
logged into my computer, the issue just got worse.

I was not able to delete OneDrive. Finally found out how
to stop it from copying files...

and just found that it's still doing the same thing on at least one
of my drives...

SO... Can anyone tell me how to eliminate OD from my computer?

I want to be able to drag files and drop them to OD online... just
don't want it to have access to my PC..

Also, how do I find all of the bazillions of copies of files/folders and
eliminate them?

Thank you for your assistance

Karen

Answer:OneDrive ate my hard drive and external hard drive

Do you still have at least one set of true-blue folders and files that you normally work with -- before this situation happened? And now, you have many duplications of those same folders and files, correct? I hope others will enter in with their ideas and solution possibilities 'cause I don't have any answers at this time.

I would like to delete everything off of it from my old computer and have a clean hard drive but am not sure how to go about doing this. Is it ok to just simply delete everything? Or is there a process I need to go through? I have tried searching this on google and can't find much helpful information. Any help would be great thanks

I have a Samsung s2 1tb external hard drive.

Today when I hooked it up to my laptop it would not load. It will shows local F drive when it usually will say samsung Drive.

A pop up box will then appear stating "you need to format drive"

I know if I reformat it I will lose all my data which I will not do.

When I look in device manager it states that the external hard drive is installed.

I attempted to go through start menu and type cmd then F: and it states "The volume does not recognize this system file. Please make sure all required system drivers are loaded and the volume is not corrupted."

PLEASE HELP I DONT WANT TO LOSE ALL MY FILES

Answer:Samsung s2 external hard drive not loading showing local disk F drive

With the external drive connected, Go to Disk Management (Start > type: "computer" > click on Computer Management > click on Disk Management)

Determine which disk is the external drive.
If the external drive shows here as a healthy volume, Right click on the large box to the right of the "Disk 1" / "Disk 2" lable and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

If there is nothing but a grey box or "Unallocated Space" next to the disk number then Right click on the disk number (the box) and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

Change the drive letter to anything else > OK.

If you can't do any of the above post back. If you can post a screen shot of the Disk Management window that can help.
Do not initialize the disk or format it or you will lose your data.

I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)

I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path.

The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject.

How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

If there is no easy way then how do I stop program updates for Adobe etc. failing because they can not find the F drive. I don't know why they look at that drive anyway.

Help.

Answer:External Hard Drive - Drive Letter changed - unable to change back

Hi PAMDILL,

Welcome aboard.

Try this:

Download drivecleanup.zip V 0.8.1 from

Drive Tools for Windows

Unzip to a folder. In it you will have two folders Win32 and x64, each containing DriveCleanup.exe for Windows 32bit and 64 bit respectively.

Now unplug all the USB devices from your PC (except of course the Keyboard and mouse), right click on the appropriate DriveCleanup.exe for your system and run it as an administrator.

This will remove all non-present drives from the registry.

Reboot and then plug-in your external drive.

The drive will be installed and hopefully you should be able to assign any free drive letter to it.

Please report whether it resolved your problem.

I have a very straightforward question: I am running WinXP Pro on my computer and I just got an external USB hard-drive to back up my data before I upgrade to VISTA.

My internal hard drive is NTFS file system, and the external drive is FAT32. My data backed-up perfectly.

However, I understand that VISTA is NTFS only (for the drive that it's installed on, which in my case will be the internal drive). I will be installing the VISTA OS on the internal drive, and using the external drive solely for backing up data.

I don't want to back up my data externally, upgrade my PC to VISTA, and then discover that I can't access the data on the external drive.

Here's my only question: will VISTA work with a FAT32 external drive, or do I have to convert that external drive to NTFS *before* I attempt to connect it to VISTA?

awaiting your replies - I'll appreciate all the help I can get!

Answer:will VISTA read a FAT32 external hard drive,or do I have to format the drive to NTFS?

I have heard that enterprise hard drives are more reliable than the standard hard drives in retail or consumer computers. I want to get an external hard drive for extra storage and backup purposes. My desktop and notebooks are the typical computers that are sold to retail customers. Will there be any problems having it access and drive an enterprise hard drive in an external hard drive case? I am thinking to get a fairly large size around 1T so I figure it would have its own power supply and not be powered by the USB drive. Data access will probably be via USB and/or eSata.

Answer:enterprise hard drive as an extra external drive-any problem with this idea

I believe Enterprise drives are more performance based then reliability based. The mechanics are still the same. Usually an enterprise application requires a fast drive, something like a 16MB cache and 15k RPMs is the norm, even if the drive is only 150GB, put those in RAID and you have a very fast access source for a large network.

There of course are slower, and larger backup drives, and tape backups as well... but again I can't imagine that they are any more reliable, if the two drives are comarable in other regards. SATA is Still SATA, though Fibre and SAS might be more reliable than SATA or PATA.

i may not know enough about the problem to completly describe it...but i will begin......an 80 gig external hard drive was given to me..it was rebuilt on a win 2000 system....my home edition of win xp--reconginzes it....as disk 1- in disk manager....however it is not formatted or able to be found, and does not have a drive letter assigend to it... i logged on as "administrator" ...in safe mode, to see if i could get the drive path settings option to come up in disk manager ...i could not-------does any of this make any sense to anyone?.......that option still does not come up..under user or administrator...in disk managment--so it is unformatted and has no drive letter......thus xp cannot find it......

Answer:maxtor external hard drive unformatted and undesignated by drive letter

What size is the hard drive?

Do you know what motherboard you have?

STEP 1: CHECK POWER (click for expanded instructions further down the page)

Verify that the drive light and the light on the AC adapter (power supply) is illuminated normally.
It is sometimes necessary to contact Technical Support for troubleshooting and/or possibly to replace the power supply if it behaves unusually.

STEP 2: CHECK CABLING (click for expanded instructions further down the page)

Confirm that your USB/Firewire cable is firmly connected in a port that is on the rear of your desktop computer (if you have a desktop).
Try another USB or Firewire port.
If your drive is powered only by USB, such as the FreeAgent Go, the Maxtor OneTouch mini, and the Seagate Portable drive, then the drive's cable has two USB connectors. Try connecting both of the free USB connectors into a USB port for maximum power availability.
Avoid connecting the drive via a USB hub for now.

STEP 3: WINDOWS SERVICE PACKS

Follow these instructions to ensure that your installation of Windows XP/2000 has been updated to the latest Windows Service Pack.

Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties.

The System Properties window will appear. On the General tab (which will be at the front), see the "System:" information.

For Windows 2000: Update to Service Pack 4.

For Windows XP: Update to Service Pack 2.

Allow your computer to complete the installation ... Read more

Hello,

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop. I have an image of the entire hard drive that I created when I first got the computer (using Acronis TrueImage), and I'd like to restore that image, returning the laptop back to that fresh, clean original state. I've done this two or three times before and it worked great each time.

But now there's a problem. Normally I would connect to the laptop a USB storage/backup drive that has the disk image, boot the laptop from a Rescue Media CD created by Acronis, then restore that disk image from the back-up drive onto the laptop's HDD.

When I tried it this time round, the laptop's HDD was not listed in TrueImage at all. I created a new rescue media disk, tried it again, and got the same result.

I then took the HDD out of the laptop, connected it to an adapter kit that let's you power up and plug in the drive via a USB port and external power supply, and tried the same procedure using my desktop to run the operation. Same result. The drive was not detected by Acronis.

The drive does not seem to spin up at all when it is connected.

** Keep in mind the drive still works when installed in the laptop -- it boots into Windows XP etc. **

When I plug the drive into my desktop, the drive does not show up in Disk Management (Start | Right-click My Computer | Manage | Disk Management). It doesn't show up in either of the two right-side windows. (so there's no way I know of to format it or d... Read more

Answer:Primary hard drive boots in laptop but isn't recognized when used as external drive

It's a power issue. Had the same issue taking a 2.5" laptop hdd and attempting to hook up w/ a passive usb sata hdd cable. my recommendation is to use a powered usb sata cable. like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812119475 having proper power will allow the USB bus to detect and power the hdd correctly. My External Hard Drive (My Book) was always Drive letter F.

I went to sleep and woke up to find Windows 7 Pro had updated and rebooted and I was welcomed by my login screen.

Consequently now my My Book external HDD now reads as Drive letter G.

I went into Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management

Drive letter F is not available.

F is assigned to a drive that does not exist and never has. I am confused. I only have one CD drive and it says now that I have 2 even though the one addressed as F doesn't have any information. If I click on F it says "Insert Disk"

Hello.
Recently bought a new Laptop, and went through all the setting up process, one of which was Windows 7 back up. At the time I just went for the partitioned drive option, but after a week, I've decided to buy an external Hard drive for my back ups instead.
My questions are:
1. Can I easily change the destination of the back up files?
2. Do I just delete everything on Drive D once I'm backing up to an external Hard Drive, or will Windows give me this option when I change to external Hard Drive?
3. The Back up is done on a schedule, so how do I get on when the date passes? Will it ask me to plug my external Hard Drive in the next time I boot up?
4. Finally, I'd like to back up our Desktop too, running on Vista. Can I just partition the external Hard Drive, and keep our laptop, and Desktop backed up on the same hard drive??

Cheers, Matthew

Answer:Change back up files from D Partitioned Drive to External Hard Drive?

Hi Matthew -

You don't need to partition the HD to keep your different backups on it.

The WindowsImageBackup file needs to be named only that and in the root of the external to reimage from the booted DVD or Repair CD, however you can click on it to see which PC it is for.

Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup
Backup User and System Files

I don't like the way Win7 file backup works so I drag the active User folder from each computer here to external once per month, then update the backup image every few months. You may decide to go Manual after trying the automated backup, since you'll need to move the external to catch the backup anyway.

Hi,

I am trying to re-install xp pro on my Toshiba Notebook with an external DVD drive. I am able to boot from the drive and the blue "windows setup" screen begins to load.

After I press enter to set up Window XP, it says "setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your comptuer...Press F3 to quit.

I am stumped. If I quit setup and I can reboot and load my original windows. Therefore, the hard disk is present and works fine.

How do I get the windows setup to see the hard drive and proceed with setup?

Thanks.

Answer:Solved: Install Windows with External Dvd Drive - Hard drive not found?

It is usually because the installation cannot recognise the SATA driver for the hard disc
If you have a usb drive load from Toshiba the sata controller drivers
so on the screen for the install you press F6 load drivers and then load the sata driver from the usb - I say usb as I presume you do not have a floppy drive
OR you can include them in a reburnt CD using nLite but that is a longer way round the problem
Nlite

http://www.nliteos.com/guide/part2.html

OR you can TRY try this

Enter your BIOS/Setup Utility
Locate the Serial ATA or SATA configuration section
I’ve seen this section called ‘On Chip Config’ on some Phoenix Award BIOS

On Lenovo/IBM ThinkPads it’s in Config > Serial ATA (Sata)
Change the mode of the SATA controller from AHCI to IDE or Compatibility
Save & Exit
Reboot and begin the Windows Setup again.
If Windows Setup successfully detects your hard disk this time then go ahead and perform the Windows Setup.
When Windows setup completes change the mode back to AHCI in the BIOS

I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Essentials, it's filled with tons of old photos, movies, docs, games, and I'm scared to think of what else. The SATA to USB connector broke on it, so I took the drive apart and put it inside my computer. I opened up device manager because it wasn't showing up automatically and the 2TB is showing up as unallocated, I'm freaking out now because I'm scared the data was somehow deleted.

What do I do?

edit: I realize also this isn't directly related to Windows 8 (besides the fact it's the OS I'm on), but I don't know where else to post it. I'd also like to say that I had a really deep feeling the drive was going to break continually for about two weeks before it happened, so if you have a similar feeling about something, don't ignore it!

Answer:External hard drive shell broke, salvaged internal drive

As long as your hard disk is still spinning & recognized by Windows, the data in your hard disk is still there, just the File Allocation Table got corrupted, You'll have a good chance to recover your data. What you need is a data recovery program, I use this program in the past:

Data Recovery Software Products - Runtime Software Products

In the mean time, leave this hard disk alone, do not initialize or format it when Windows offers to do so.

Hi all,
I recently bought a WD My Book Essential Edition external hard drive and wanted to change it from FAT32 to NTFS. I was following instructions given on WDs website, however the directions weren't entirely clear (of course only noticed after the fact). I right clicked on My Computer, clicked manage and used Disk Manager. The instructions said to find the drive, right click on it and click delete partition. It didn't mention however, to do that with bottom part of the screen and not the top. So, I think I just deleted the logical drive.

It shows up on the device manager and the "Safely Remove Hardware" window, but the drive letter no longer shows up under My Computer.

Is there a way to fix this? Or did I just buy a $120 paper weight?

Thanks,

PaveFE
