IBM thinkpad trackpoint

Question: IBM thinkpad trackpoint

Good afternoon all,
We have an older IBM thinkpad 600x, that my husband uses to play simple off line games and read a few emails. The past few days when booting we are getting the error #08611.
From what I have been able to find I believe that this has something to do with the trackpoint.
We use a wireless mouse with this so do not need the track point. Can someone please tell me how to disable the trackpoint?
Thanks!!!
I wish a Happy & prosperous 2010 to all.

Preferred Solution: IBM thinkpad trackpoint

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Now that the 5th gen Thinkpad is here, the decline of the trackpoint becomes ever clearer.  Frankly, most of us would not be buying Thinkpads if they didn't have the trackpoint.  That's the X1's main advantage.  But Lenovo keeps making it worse.  First, the trackpoint caps that will fit the gen 4 and 5 come in only one, unpopular, variant and you can't get the soft rim version.  But more importantly, Lenovo keeps on degrading the software control of the trackpoint.  It used to be that you could adjust the sensitivity of the trackpoint, making it more or less stiff.  Even the softest setting was inadequate but it was something.  In the 5gen there is no option to change the stiffness or responsiveness of the trackpoint's movements at all.  Lenovo: hear your customers!! Please make the trackpoint MORE not less adjustable.

Hello I recieved my P50 today and wonder if any other P50-owners experience the same thing as I. The three buttons below the keyboard (the trackpoint mouse-buttons) and the spacebar sounds like knocking a pen on a table. It is noticeable louder than earlier thinkpads. Most of the keyboard is very quiet, its just the high noise from the spacebar and trackpoint-buttons that is rather loud. How does your keyboard and trackpoint sound?

Answer:Thinkpad P50 Trackpoint noise

I haven't noticed anything strange with mine. It sounds like every other trackpad. Maybe you should make a video and share it with us on youtube to describe what you mean.

Originally, my middle trackpoint button would cause my window to scroll based on how hard I moved the nub on my keyboard(which I liked), but after making no change, it now turns my cursor into an scrolling arrow which is much harder to control. Is there any way I can get my original setting back?

Hello,my Thinkpad 600 never failed me(except for having to replace the CMOS battery every 5 years, which seems to be normal for this model)but now the Track Point is "stuck" somehow. I touch it once and then the mouse pointer arrow keeps runningto the left side of the screen. The external USB Mouse works fine, but only when the Track Point is deactivated in Thinkpad configuration. Before, I sometimes had the problem that the arrow kept moving after I had stopped touching the TrackPoint, but it always "calmed down" after a second or so.Does anybody has an idea how to fix this ? Or is it just broken?Thank youNiaUpdate:On the Lenovo troubleshooting pages I found the following explanation"The TrackPoint does automatic compensations to adjust the pointer sensor. During this process, the pointer moves on the screen automatically for a short time. This self-acting pointer movement can occur when a slight, steady pressure is applied to the TrackPoint pointer while the computer is powered on or while the system is running, or when readjustment is required because the temperature has exceeded its normal temperature range. This symptom does not indicate a hardware problem. No service actions are necessary if the pointer movement stops in a short period of time."Well, I am a little confused by this. So the TrackPoint does some kind of self-calibration? And what do I do if themovement doesn't stop? Maybe should I install a new TrackPoint driver version? Please, can somebody help me a little...... Read more

Answer:thinkpad 600, trackpoint malfunctioning

Welcome to the forum! Yes, TrackPoint is supposed to self-calibrate and move occasionally, but is also supposed to stop doing that after a few seconds. Quite a few people have reported this issue with 600 series in the past, and there is no known cure (apart from using an external mouse) that I'm aware of. It' s supposedly a glitch that develops on the main board. Try updating your BIOS and drivers from the "support and downloads" section of Lenovo's website. Good luck.

Been bumbling along quite happily with my ThinkPad 600/2645/45U running on 98SE for quite a while. It's my in-car system.Only a slight niggle. With the trackpoint device, there are three buttons to represent the three mouse buttons. I would like to configure the (currently non-functioning) third button to be the 'double-click' button. However, search as I may, I cannot find a meaningful driver that will allow me to do this. I have found (I hope) a 'contact' facility to ask IBM, but I'm not 100% certain that I found the right one or that I will get a reply.Has any nice person out there had the same 'problem' and found a driver?Chris

Hiseems T460s (20F9) is wors than my previous laptop T420s, I can't move it so freely as before. At certain point the mouse cursor just stops moving and have to use force with a finger to make it move anywhere. I noticed the cap hole is now much smaller than f.ex. T420s, perhaps this is the reason for it. I found a link on the net to make the movement possible better;http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/thinkpad-t460s-trackpoint-mod.790347/In addition, previously there came several Caps with the laptop, now there is not a single extra one. So I don't dare to try the fix above link before I have at least one extra cap in case something goes wrong. So the question is what is the product code for the Thinkpad T460s Trackpoint Cap collection? I tried to look in the net, hard to find.  I used Lenovoguickpick and the possible code might be this;ThinkPad Super Low Profile TrackPoint Cap Set (Part # 4XH0L55146)Then again googling that with amazon produces no results so can't get those anywhere. Any help appreciated, Thank You.

Answer:Thinkpad T460s TrackPoint Cap

According to Lenovo Japan, these new Super Low Profile caps are going to be available in May.

Is there a way to disable the trackpoint? In tablet mode, the cursor seems to move around and I think the culprit is the trackpoint rubbing against the back of the screen.

Answer:Thinkpad Twist - Disable trackpoint?

Hey there mosswoodpark,

The trackpoint should automatically disable when moved into tablet mode, this may be an issue where the the UltraNav driver has not up to date. The UltraNav driver for the Twist can be found here.

Additionally there has been some success in gaining a solution by updating the ThinkVantage Active Protection System, thanks to some work by Azrael_DD from this thread with trackpoint issues and tablets. I hope these solutions clear up this issue for you. Good Luck, and don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions.

Thinkpad Yoga user here.  I'm having a problem when I wake my computer up from sleep (or sometimes on re-boot) the trackpoint and touchpad do not work.  The touch screen is still fine and if I plug in a USB mouse the cursor shows up then. This has been happening intermittently over the past 2 months or so, it is becomming more frequent. It usually requires a hard reboot (where I hold the power button until the machine turns off) before the trackpoint and touchpad come back.  Recently even this hasn't worked every time.  It has come to the point where, if I put my computer into sleep, there's probably a 75% chance the pointers won't work when I wake it up and that it will require multiple re-boots to get them back. I don't know if this is an issue with the synaptic drivers (I've updated them, reverted to older versions, uninstalled and reinstalled but the problem continues). Or maybe it is a hardware problem, I'm not sure. If anyone (preferably lenovo) has any suggestions on how to fix this, I wold be very appreciative. Thanks!

I figured out the part number is 4XH0L55146.  But, where can i get them? I live in New Zealand, and the NZ online store does not stock them.   The US store does not ship to NZ.  None of Lenovos NZ partners stock these either.  My current trackpoint cap has failed and I really need a new one.   I spoke to Lenovo on the phone and they couldn't help either...  It seems at this stage, the only way to fix this is as a warranty repair.

I just purchased a ThinkPad Edge 13 0196-3HM with Windows 7.I am happy with the product except the TrackPoint and Touch Pad do not work. A USB mouse and a BlueTooth Mouse work fine. From the initial startup there has been no life in either the Touch Pad or the TrackPoint. The device manager does not find the TrackPoint or Touch Pad.I've checked settings, the drivers and all appears OK. Anyone have a similar problem? or can anyone help? The trouble shooting on the Lenovo site has no answer I can find, the supplier advised "talk to Lenovo". Thanks.

Answer:ThinkPad Edge 13 TrackPoint / Touch Pad

Verify that the trackpad ribbon cable is full inserted into the socket. You'll need to remove the keyboard to check this. See the hardware maintenance manual.

Hi, I have removed the red rubber cap from my laptop's trackpoint because I do not use the trackpoint and the rubber cap leaves a mark on the laptop's screen when the lid is closed. The problem is that now there is an unsightly black hole in my keyboard. Does anyone know if a trackpoint cap/cover exists that is recessed and not intended for use of the trackpoint but just to cover the hole? If it is recessed below keyboard level then it should not leave a mark. Cheers

Answer:ThinkPad T420 TrackPoint cover

If you haven't already destroyed the original cap, why not just sand the top of it enough so that it leaves no mark on the screen. This action should be taken before reinstall to keep any foreign material from the entering the keyboard. The removal of the material should be slightly below the nubs on the cap to somewhat match the keys.A word of caution:Doing a "sand/fit/sand/fit/sand/fit" will increase the possible chances of cap/stalk/fit damage - "Enough is enough, and too much is too much." Regards,-30-

Hi,I'm having Thinkpad 13. I have configured touchpad off from BIOS setting i.e. only trackpoint should be working. During normal use everything is fine. However, when I shut down or restart the PC and tasks are still up and running PC asks if those tasks are to be completed or forced to shut down. In that screen trackpoint stops working and I do not have possibility to select the button to force applications to stop. How can I get trackpoint working also in that screen during restart?

Hello, I have a thinkpad X240. The Trackpoint button (nipple) has never worked since I've had it. The computer used to have Windows 8.1, however now it has been upgraded to Windows 10. The trackpoint button still did not work after the upgrade. I have tried updating the BIOS to the latest version, with still no change. The keyboard was recently replaced by a Lenovo tech as some keys stopped working properly, which means that the trackpoint button was replaced too. However, it still does not work. I have tried completely removing and re-installing the Synaptics driver from the lenovo website. The Trackpoint button shows as "Enabled" in the BIOS. Below is a screenshot of the "Thinkpad" tab in the mouse section of the control panel. I am guessing that there is supposed to be another option under the "Pointing options" dropdown menu which allows the Trackpoint button to be enabled.  If anybody has any suggestions as to how I can get it working, that would be appreciated.  Thank you

Answer:Thinkpad X240 Trackpoint issue

Hi, welcome to the forum.

I think you already did what is necessary by reinstaing the synaptics driver.
You tried the Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver for Windows 10 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad /19.0.17.115 / 10/27/2016, right?

Since you machine was serviced it may be that something is wrong with the keyboard or the installation of it.
If you feel confortable open it up you can check the Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad X240 and check how the keyboard get installed to see if all the cables are connected.  I'm not sure if page 89 shows what needs to be plugged for the keyboard. (I don't have that model)

But since this looks like more hardware related, I think you should open a formal ticket.
Regards

Hi.  I'm having some issues with my newly bought W540 thinkpad.  Each time Windows 8.1 starts up after a longer shutdown, the UltraNav trackpoint freezes. The problem seems to affect the trackpoint only, i have no problem with the touchpad.Loading the UEFI BIOS setup defaults seems to help, but i need to do it after every shutdown, which isvery frustrating. The problem doesn't occur when restarting windows. Pleas help!

As per your query we understood that you are facing the issue with Track-point on your ThinkPad W540.

I think the issue might be with the driver, can you please provide us the driver version which is installed on your system.

I've owned ThinkPad laptops for the past 20 years.  My most recent purchase was a ThinkPad X1 Yoga running Windows 10.  My prior version was a ThinkPad Edge 520 with Windows 7. What I've noticed is that the "sensitivity" option is no longer available for the TrackPoint mouse.  I've attached a screenshot of the old Ultranav utility which allowed for the sensitivity to be adjusted from Light to Heavy touch.  On the new version, there is only the option to adjust the speed from Slow to Fast (which was also available on the prior version). I have no idea what the sensitivity is set by default, but it's definitely not a Light touch.  This is annoying especially if you have to scroll through log pages (web page or documents).  This is a real annoyance because it is so much more diffcult to use the TrackPoint, so much so, I'm debating whether to buy a mouse, which I haven't used in over 20 years. Anyway we could get UltraNav to add that functionality in soon???

After using the ThinkPad Yoga 260 for about two weeks, both the trackpoint and touchpad are now unresponsive. I've tried updating the drivers, rolling back the drivers and uninstalling the drivers and installing the latest one. None of it works. I managed to get it working once with a BIOS update but as soon as I put it in sleep mode, both became unresponsive again. Under Mouse Porperties the TouchPad option is grayed out and the TrackPoint option is sometimes grayed out and sometimes not. Regardless, it is completely unresponsive when enabled and disabled.

Hi,My trackpad and trackpoint have stopped working on my T440 running Windows 8.1.When running Lenovo Solution center it says that a PS/2-compatiable mouse is inactivated and I can't see any of the pointing devices in the device manager. When I try to install the appointed UltraNav driver I sometimes get an error which says the installation was unsuccessful. Sometimes the installation is successful but when I reboot the computer the devices still doesn't work and when I try to configure them through the control panel I get an error which says that the driver doesn't work. I have also checked so that both devices are enabled in BIOS. Thanks Jakob

Hi, I have a ThinkPad Yoga 12 2nd gen with these specs: -Processor: Intel core i5-5300U-Ram: 8GB-Hard Drive: Samsung 850 Pro 512GB SSD (installed by myself) and SanDisk 16GB PCIe M.2-Screen: Full HD 10 point multi-touch with Wacom digitizer-BIOS: JEET78WW (1.27) The trackpad and trackpoint on this laptop has stopped working the second time and with that, the CPU fan has halted as well, with the backlit function of the keyboard non-working as well. The fan is really important because my heavy-duty use of this machine makes it really hot real quick. My laptop is pretty much useless without it and want a solution for it. I did try to update my BIOS for this because on some forums, this was an issue fixed by updating their BIOS. The system does not recognize the Synaptics trackpad and trackpoint (yes the TRACKPOINT is not working as well) and I have tried downloading the drivers of the trackpad, but to no luck the system did not recognize the trackpad. It seems as if there is a faulty connection physically, but I could not figure it out. The first time it happened, I sent it back for an in Depot Service, but this time around, I am out of warranty and when I asked a ThinkPad Certified Technician, he recommended me to simply buy a new machine rather than getting it serviced because it would cost me more than half as much of the original price of my laptop. I really like this laptop and don't want to change it, but if I have to, the 8th generation Intel pro... I own a thinkpad w541 laptop. 3 months old now. I have noticed that whenever I reached the end of a scrolling page if I continue pushing the trackpoint to scroll on, a series of beeping sound comes out. The beeps are continuous, some times 5 beeps sometimes 7 continuous beeps depending on how hard I push. Is this normal?
I did some experimenting and find out that it will only beep whenever I pushed the track point too hard and that it will only happen when there are nothing left to scroll (end of a page). Is this normal, does anyone else's thinkpad has the same behaviour? My current guess is that it is some sort of warning alert to let us know that I am pushing the track point too hard, but then again, I just want to be sure.

Thanks in advance guys.

I suspect the Thinkpad W540 can not accept the current driver from the Lenovo support site (tp_compact_keyboard_1491.exe) as the version of the HID driver remains 6.17602.27514 and is a 2006 Microsoft driver). What is worse is, attempting to type on it in any normal speed for a touch typist results in bad keystroke recognition and has the window lose focus, selecting menu items, or the most annoying, selecting previously typed data that gets deleted as soon as you type the next character. It has happened 3 times just typing this note. I can't find a way to disable the driver associated with the keyboard on the Thinkpad (uninstalling it doesn't work) and I'm assuming with two drivers installed, they collide somehow causing the bad interpretation.  Or, the USB ports on the W540 aren't compabile with the keyboard.  I doubt the latter as I had problems with a Bluetooth version of the same keyboard. Lenovo doesn't appear to recognize its own keyboard based on 03X8715 fru but sometimes finds references to KU-1255 model when searching for drivers.  I've opened 2 tickets with Lenovo but all they do is delete the drivers and reboot to get them to reinstall.  I think these keyboards are not compatible with the W540 (though sailes said they were), and until a better driver is developed they are useless. Because the W540 rearranged the Thinkpad keyboard puttng the PrtScr at the bottom and the delete key where the insert key was... Last night (4/6/2017) an automatic Windows update just now decided to install the most recent Synaptics driver (titled Synaptics - Mouse - 1/11/2017 12:00:00 AM - 19.3.4.66), which apparently is nearly 3 months old at this point.  One thing this update seems to have fixed is an issue I?ve been having with my ThinkPads for upwards of 7 years ? randomly it resets my mouse wheel 'number of lines scrolled per notch' option back to 1 (I prefer 3) pretty much daily, which is a HUGE annoyance, so I?m very grateful for this update and I?d like to keep it. However, it also completely disabled middle click scrolling with my TrackPoint (yes, I have ?Use for scrolling? checked under the TrackPoint settings).  The middle button does nothing now, unless I check ?Use as middle click?.  Rolling back the Synaptics driver to the previous one fixes this issue. Confoundingly, the TrackPoint scrolling with my ThinkPad Bluetooth keyboard still works fine. Has anyone else experienced this problem?  Any ideas how to re-enable TrackPoint scrolling on this newest driver? System details:ThinkPad P50 ? Pardon me if this is too much of a software question, but yeah, I'm trying out Firefox 6, and while the browser seems less crashy, I can no longer side scroll by holding the middle mouse button and using the Trackpoint. It's a big deal for me. Scrolling with the Trackpoint is basically my favorite feature; to me, it feels even more convenient than a touch screen. Any one else notice this issue, or know how to solve it?

Answer:Side scrolling via Trackpoint broken in Firefox 6 [Thinkpad X220]

It works for me (Firefox 6.0.2). Try updating your UltraNav driver from the Lenovo support page. The latest is fairly new, dated August 23.

Hi all, I have a problem with my Thinkpad Edge S430. After reinstalling Windows 7, System update and all drivers, my trackpoint doesn't work. Itīs disabled and there is no way of getting it to work. I have unistalled, cleaned the registry and reinstalled the driver from the official driver web page, from within system update,... no way.  The other problem is with the SD Reader. I use a 32Gb SD card for backup purposes and a week ago simply itīs like the reader does not exist anymore. The devide administrator does have all drivers installed, but the reader is not working (of course, I have checked that the card is working and with all data in other PC). I have also unistalled and installed the driver, but again no way. Any help is really welcome. Thanks in advance,

Answer:Ultranav trackpoint not working, SD reader vanished. Thinkpad EDGE S430

Hi, petodow

For the TrackPoint issue, I would try installing the Synaptics driver from here. Synaptics is the company that makes UltraNav, so there shouldn't be any loss of functionality.

As for the SD card reader, there is a BIOS update that was released five days ago that may help. The update can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

I spilled something on the internal keyboard of my R61i, and reinstalled a new keyboard today.  The keyboard works fine; the trackpoint is not working, and doesn't show up on the device manager either.  When the keyboard broke, I uninstalled the keyboard and the mouse in device manager because keys were stuck and I couldn't use an external keyboard/mouse effectively without uninstalling the faulty internal ones.  When I installed the new keyboard today, the keyboard automatically started working when I turned the computer back on and shows up in device manager and is working fine; the trackpoint, not so much.  How do I reinstall the trackpoint if the computer isn't recognizing it?  is this possibly a software program, or is the new keyboard mouse faulty?  any suggestions?  have restarted multiple times and scanned for hardware; I have also tried downloading things that look like they might be the right drivers, but I'm not sure how to reinstall the trackpoint if windows doesn't see it.

At certain relatively slow speeds the scrolling jumps huge leaps regularly (probably after evey page or so). It's very bad with Chrome and Windows explorer, not so bad but noticeable in Thunderbird. I have set the scrolling to 1 line. My Synaptics drivers are the newest 10/04/2015. Also the treshold to start scrolling with middle button and trackpoint is very high - can't be that hard to make it smooth, so you could scroll very slowly? Please fix this soon... it's impossible to live with.

I was having responsiveness issues with the trackpad for a while, then, i open my laptop one day and it's completely unresponsive, as well has the backlit keyboard not working (the hotkey still pops up that it's "lighting up" the keyboard, but no actual lights) and the trackpoint being completely unresponsive too. I've tried:- Restarting computer- Using Lenovo's various "fixing" softwares- Looking for a keyboard firmware shortcut for enabling/disabling trackpad, (doesn't exist on this computer)- Re installing drivers (Ultranav driver refuses to install manually, "driver installation failed")- Booting on a non microsoft OS (Booted on a linux Mint installation and it still doesn't work)- Booting into BIOS and looking for "enable/disable trackpad option", That option does not exist for me.- Opening up computer and checking the physical connection, All plugged in fine. When i open the device manager in windows there is no entry for the mouse whatsoever. The touch screen and the pen both work fine. I think it all points towards a hardware issue, i can pick up another trackpad on ebay for pretty cheap, but obviously i'd like to make sure that it would actually solve the issues.  The major confusion for me is that why would faulty trackpad hardware stop the backlit keyboard from lighting up? How are the two linked? Any ideas appreciated, Thanks!

Hello, on my ThinkPad Yoga (version 03/2015) with Win10 pro (latest updates installed) the Trackpoint randomly stops to move the cursor. The issue can be present right after booting or occur anytime, even running the device multiple hours without experiencing any problems is not uncommon. However, the three buttons still work properly when pressed. The same holds for the touchpad, an external mouse and any input via touchscreen (finger and pen). So, it is really "just" about the red rubber point itself.Sometimes suspending to RAM solves the issue for a short time. The problem seems to occur slightly more often when running on battery but I am not fully sure about that. Furthermore, only the Trackpoint of the ThinkPad itself is affected, I have not experienced this for the Trackpoint of my external ThinkPad Compact Keyboard .  I have the latest UltraNav drivers from the Lenovo website installed, version 19.0.17.22. Of course, I have taken out the rubber and checked for dust. The only thing left would be to try reproducing the issue using a Linux Live system but this is hard to do due to it occuring randomly. Does anyone have any guesses? Does this sound like a driver issue or something hardware related (some sort of loose contact or the like: Sometimes it seems that movement of the device causes the failure of the TrackPoint)? I feel a little reluctant to have replaced the mainboard on spec but I do not know what else to do. Thanks in advance.

For a while now, I have wondered why the virtual buttons shown in the utility http://imgur.com/Lljj1Z7 don?t function as advertised. According to the utility, I should get a left click if I depress the left are of the touchpad, a middle click if I push on the bumps, and a right click if I depress the right half of the touchpad. In my experience, I get a left click regardless of where I depress the touchpad. The only exception is when I depress the bumps in the top middle of the touchpad?when I do that, the mouse enters some weird scrolly mode where I scan scroll stuff with the trackpoint. It definitely does not emit a middle click. But, more importantly, I cannot figure out how to get trackpoint mode to emit a right click. How do I get trackpoint classic mode to work? Is there a way to downgrade the drive or use a non-lenovo branded driver to get it to behave properly? Right now, I?m relying on an external mouse just to middle click and right click. I?m using Windows 10 b10240 and, as in the post?s title, my trackpoint driver is the latest listed on Lenovo?s support site (which I think WU actually installed for me)?19.0.12.61. Why don?t the virtual buttons work and are there any other workarounds that don?t involve using a mode other than Trackpoint Classic?

Answer:T540p unable to right-click with virtual buttons in trackpoint or trackpoint classic mode 19.0.12.61

Seems to have partially fixed iteslf since Windows Update (WU) installed 19.0.16. Now the right half of my touchpad performs a right click when in TrackPad Classic mode. However, the supposed ?middle click? zone still does a weird scrolly mode instead of sending a middle click. Guess I still have to use an external mouse to accomplish a middle click when using Classic TrackPoint mode, but at least the situtaion is better than when I couldn?t right click with this mode.

Hi, I got an S230u Twist last autumn and have been really happy with it. At the time, I ordered a set of replacement rubber TrackPoint caps. When I replaced the original cap the other day, I realised that the replacement ones are about 0.5mm shorter than the original one, with the result that the H and G keys get caught on the edge of the cap; you have to hit them quite hard to get them to work. I compared all the new caps from the packet against the original one, and sure enough; they're all a little too short. They fit, but it's annoying to have to go back and make sure all my ""G"s and "H"s typed correctly.  Has anyone else had the same problem? Lenovo, could this just have been a bad batch, and if so can I return the unused ones for a replacement set that is the correct height?

Answer:S230u - replacement trackpoint TrackPoint caps are too short

If you bought them from Lenovo I'd just try and return them. If not dispute on eBay/PayPal/Credit Card. But never use poor quality TrackPoint Caps. Remember if a computer is running efficiently so is the person behind it generally.

Unfortunately, tapping on the pad seems to be disabled during use of trackpoint - any smart hack to get this workig? Thanks to all,J

Question: Trackpoint gone...

I did the usual "Windows update" this morning. After the installation had completed I noticed that my Trackpoint has "disappeared"! There is no reaction whatsoever when pressing the red dot and I can't control the mouse with it any more. I then checked in the control panel (no trace) and then had to learn, that it doesn't even exist in the device manager, either. I then rebooted, no change. I then even powered off and reboot from power off again, still no trackpoint! And after I downloaded the trackpoint driver from the Lenovo drivers download site and wanted to (re-)install the driver, I got an error message "this driver can not be installed on non-trackpoint systems". ?!? What? What the %@[email protected]#*%?  Where has my trackpoint gone??? How come, that it has completely disappeared? How do I get this thing working again? Edited: I later noticed, that a part of that Windows Update apparently was a new "Wacom Two Finger Touch" driver. Might that have to do with my disappeared Trackpoint? Michael PS.: Boy - is this annoying to have to work without Trackpoint!

Answer:Trackpoint gone...

I just had to learn that there is a Fn-key (F8) that allows to enable/disable Trackpoint and Touchpad. I must have accidentally operated that button without noticing (in fact, I hadn't even known before that there IS such an option...).Its setting was on "Touchpad only". After re-enabling the trackpoint there everything came back to normal. Wheew. What a relieve! :-) And it (most probably) had nothing to do with the Windows Update - just an unlucky conincidence! Michael

Question: Trackpoint cap

I'm not sure if this is the place I'm supposed to post this. I absolutely hate the trackpoint when I type.  I type quite fast and I hit the trackpoint every once in a while -- but this is enough to really get on my nerves.  It's absolutely distracting.  Imagine typing out your thoughts then all of a sudden you hit the thing, get distracted, then irritated, and your thoughts gone.  ThinkPads are supposed to help you think.  The trackpoint unfortunately doesnt...  Are there a replacement tips that's depressed enough (and maybe colored black...) so that I dont hit it accidentally when I type?  Removing the tip works fine -- but it looks so ugly without it (makes it look like i'm using a broken equipment). Oh and I dont mind if the replacement cap will render the trackpoint unusable.  I just need it low enough so I dont accidentally hit it.

these are the three different types of trackpoint caps. You might get lucky with the first type and there is no black trackpoint caps produced by Lenovo.

You can disable the trackpoint by pressing Fn + F8 in windows and then select trackpad only. You can also disable trackpoint from BIOS menu.

E420S, Cannot get either to work. Cannot enable trackpoint or touchpad in UltraNav.

Answer:Trackpoint and Touchpad

Hi, ezedoh

The first thing I would recommend is the removal of the UltraNav driver from the system. This is best accomplished by using an external mouse to navigate the system. To uninstall the UltraNav driver, open the Start menu and type Device Managerinto the Search box, and then press Enter. Once here, double click on Mouse and other pointing devices, and then right-click on the UltraNav device. Naviage to the Driver tab and select Uninstall... from the bottom of the window. Follow the prompts to uninstall and then restart when prompted by Windows. Windows should install a generic driver for controlling the mouse. This should reinstate the touchpad to working order. If not, then continue using an external mouse for now.

Once the UltraNav driver has been removed, I would recommend trying to use the standard Synaptics driver found here. Synaptics is the company that develops the UltraNav software, so there should be no loss of compatibility/features. I have witnessed several cases where this driver has helped others with mouse issues, so it may help yours as well.

Hope it helps,
Adam

When you say the TrackPoint is loose, are you refering to the red cap that covers it?  If so, it's probably just worn out and needs to be replaced.  You can order replacements from Lenovo.  The part number is 73P2698, and here in the US, they're $9.99.  Sometimes they're also available on eBay.

I'm using a Lenovo T61-8890 A24. It's a pretty old model but has been upgraded to be able to support Win 7 Ultimate 32bit.

I currently am facing a similar issue. In the BIOS, both my trackpoint and touchpad is detected and set to Automatic.
If I remove the entire palm rest and touchpad panel, I'm able to get the trackpoint to work, however once the touchpad is connected, the trackpoint just stops working.

I tried to enable it on the Ultranav program but it just doesn't work.

I tried the mouse properties and the trackpoint function is greyed out as shown below.

Link to image 1

When I went into the device manager, the trackpoint is not detected.

I tried installing all versions of Ultranav, tried BIOS updates, tried cleaning the connectors, and still can't get the trackpoint to work together with the touchpad.

Any advice to this issue is greatly appreciated.

Answer:T61 - can't enable TrackPoint

Hi Dyna, Welcome to the forum. When you say Trackpoint doesn't work, do you mean:1. That trackpoint itself is not workingor 2. The left click, right click and scroll buttons associated with the trackpoint doesn't work. ========Also, you did not mention whether your trackpad works or not. Finally, what happens when you disable the trackpad in the BIOS menu? Does that affect your trackpoint and associated buttons' behaviours?

Answer:trackpoint did't work

Hi Oshri,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with track point not working in your Lenovo T410 laptop
The Fn-key (F8) allows the to enable/disable Trackpoint and Touchpad.

If the trackpoint is no longer working, this may be a good option to check before investigating device manager, updating / reinstalling trackpoint drivers or rebooting as discussed above.

Pressing Fn-F8 brings up the ultranav menu and allows the user to cycle through different trackpoint and touchpad configuration options.

Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!

Best regards,

After just a few months of usage, my W510's TrackPoint cap came loose. I ordered a three-part TrackPoint cap collection on eBay. Alas, the caps don't fit.

No surprise if you look at this photo of a non-W-series keyboard with the cap removed. The TrackPoint post in my W-series ThinkPad is yellow rather than black and significantly smaller:

Also, the W-series is prominently absent from the list of supported models in Lenovo's specs of the replacement caps.

Anyone know if replacement caps for the W-series are available?

Also, how would I attach the cap? Just pushing it back didn't really do it for my original cap, it kept coming loose.

Answer:Replacement TrackPoint cap?

some of the cap collection on ebay is fake. The W510 uses the same keyboard as mine T400s, and the real Lenovo trackpoint from T60 fits the T400s keyboard perfectly.

I have an odd problem.  When I bootup to the login screen, the mouse is disabled.  I can use the keyboard just fine, but I can't move the mouse at all.  It's more of an annoyance than anything, but if anyone knows how to enable the mouse at startup, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for your help,--sam

Hello I`ve had to clean up my Thinkpad t61p keyboard after an unfortunate incident involving a glass of soda, and now the trackpoint has gone crazy.I had to disable it because it was moving my cursor randomly to corners of the screen.I`ve also seem to have misplaced the little rubber bubble from my scroll button, but that`s not so important at the moment.Any ideas as to what might have gone wrong? thanks

Answer:Messed up my trackpoint

Nevermind, it`s back to normal.Any suggestions as to what I might be able to use as a replacement for the scroll rubber bubble ?

Question: Trackpoint Issues

Hi, Just recently my trackpoint in my T61 stopped responding after having a little water in my keyboard near the left function and shift keys.  Attempting to fix the problem, I went to the mouse settings to make sure it was enabled, however the Trackpoint section was grayed out and the enabled box was unchecked. I also checked the BIOS settings and both the Trackpoint and touch pad are set to automatic. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the Ultranav driver and utility. Is there anything else I should do to fix the problem? The amount of water that got into the keyboard did not look like it was much and evaporated pretty quickly, so I am not sure if this is just a coincidence or it is related to the water being in the keyboard.  I also tried tried the Trackpoint with a Ubuntu Live CD, but it did not work in Ubuntu either. Thanks

Is there any way to use the trackpoint on Lenovo computers as a joystick?  I.e. a device that would be useful for a flight simulator?  Essentially, it wouldn't be moving the mouse along a line based on the direction you're pushing it in with a speed based on your finger pressure,  but rather moving the mouse to a stationary position on the screen based on the direction and pressure you're pushing on it with.

Answer:Using the trackpoint as a joystick?

Download the latest version of ppjoy - it comes with a mouse to joystick driver that works well with trackpoint

Question: x230 trackpoint

Hey,sometimes when I move my pointer somwhere and then release trackpoint the pointer goes a little bit backwards. Can it be fixed?Regards

Answer:x230 trackpoint

TrackPoint drift has been happening as long as I can remember, at least back to the X31.  Release the trackpoint, and it may drift towards the top left.  If you let it drift, it stops after a few seconds and after that works properly.  At least for me this happens infrequently enough so as not to be a big deal.

For the past week or two it seems that the mouse clicks on its own on my T420. This is in TrackPoint only mode (TouchPad disabled) with press to select disabled. This issue is reproducible as it generally happens right after a normal click or unclick. For example, if I highlight text in a word processor by clicking and dragging my cursor over the text when I release the button the system registers a phantom click within the next second or so. I also have noticed these phantom clicks after middle clickling. Does this sound like a possible driver issue or should I go ahead and call to have a tech come out and replace parts?

Answer:TrackPoint clicks on its own

@nibs,Try uninstalling UltraNav, reboot the laptop then install it back and see if it helps. If problem persist then I guess its time to contact the techs.

Does anyone else have this problem?  Where the cursor keeps drifting after you let go when you are using the trackpoint? It doesn't do it all the time for me, but when it does, it kinda gets on my nerves.  Kinda takes the extra percision advantages away. Thanks!

Answer:Trackpoint Drifting after let go

yeah i have that problem, and i have a friend with the same problem. its just because the rubber doesnt stay seated right on the piece is sitting on, if you push on it too hard. thats my guess, but i could be wrong. i notice if i dont push on the rubber part very hard it keeps that from happening. for some reason i always push straight down on the rubber piece and thats when it does it the most.

Hi all! The new s430 just arrived, containing some annoying problems :/ . One of them is the following: The Touchpad and the Trackpoint are not working at all. I can t de/activate them in the Win7-system-control. The drivers are up-to-date. Could it be a driver/software-problem? Greetings,Bvbnudel

Answer:No Touchpad and Trackpoint

Hi Bvbnudel, Touchpad and Trackpoint are indeed different components, there is a little chance that will fail altogether. I would suggest re-install UltraNav driver and check with antivirus programs. OK, T60 Notebook and suddenly the TrackPoint and TouchPad stopped working.  I checked under the ThinkVantage tools and they are enabled.  I checked in the BIOS and the device(s) are enabled there as well.  I've had a TouchPad go bad before but the TrackPoint still worked.  Kinda strange both would go down at the same time.  So, in short: 1.  Has anyone out there experienced this and if so, how did you fix it?2.  Does anyone have the part number for a replacement TouchPad (I've searched the site and could find dang near everything else, but the TouchPad) TIA!

Answer:TouchPad and TrackPoint

They're integrated parts of the palm rest. A cable connects all integrated parts of the palm rest to the machine. So I guess the cable isn't plugged in firmly enough. Remove the palm rest according to the hardware manual and check. If the cable has no problem, contact Lenovo to ask for a replacement palm rest.

I have a T60 laptop (purchased Jun 2006) which works great except for the trackpoint.  For the last few months, the trackpoint has not been working.  The touchpad works. Here are the steps I took to troubleshoot - 1.  Updated Ultra NAV driver and Utility software (the latest from lenovo website).  Actually un-installed old version and      re-installed new version2.  Updated the BIOS to the newer version and ensured that Trackpoint/NAV is set to enabled in BIOS3.  Replaced the keyboard (assumed it was a hardware problem).  During replacement, I made sure it was properly      seated to rule out a loose connection.4.  The motherboard was replaced last year (due to a another problem) so I assume it may not be the source of problem I have searched this and other websites but am out of luck.  Appreciate if any one can provide more leads/ideas to fix this.  I am not sure if this is software related. Thanks

Answer:Please help - Trackpoint not operational

how about the mouse properties is it enabled there

Question: Trackpoint problem

First of all, sorry if this questions been asked and answered. I've been searching off an on for several weeks for any online help to a trackpoint annoyance I've been having with no luck. I'm on a T61p running XP. (I upgraded the stock Vista, following an online guide). I have the Ultranav utility installed (I can see and change the options for the trackpoint/touchpad in the mouse control panel). Both the trackpoint and touchpad work. However, every once in a while the trackpoint just becomes totally unresponsive and the mouse pointer refuses to respond or move. For like 3-4 seconds. What's odd is that when this happens, the touchpad still works. (I'm trying to move or scroll with the trackpoint / topmost scroll button+trackpoint with now response, but use other finger to test touchpad and that responds.) It's really odd and really annoying. Has anyone had a similar problem? Any advice? Thanks!

Hi All,Could someone help me to identify if my trackpoint on the T420S is broken? The images are here,http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/7643/fig1k.jpg http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/199/fig2h.jpg  In the first image, the red trackpoint can easily come out of the fixture on the keyboard. If I take out the red cap, there is a black thing as shown in second image located on key "G."  I try to jam it into the fixture, but did not work out.Should this black thing need to always stay in the fixture? Is it just be glued to the fixture?Should I ask Lenovo for a service? Thanks for your help.

Answer:Is my trackpoint broken?

The images don't work, however, I think I understand.  The Trackpoint is a red rubber cap that just fits on a black plastic post between the G, H, and B keys.  It lifts right off of the black plastic post.  The post is a permanent part of the keyboard.  The "eraser" head is user replaceable when necessary. The underside of the Trackpoint "eraser" is hollowed out to fit over the black post.  It is snug, but does not require "jamming."  When in place, does it work?

I recently got a Thinkpad T420.  One of my favorite features is the nub, but for the past few days the nub has been impossible to use.  It will click things randomly and rapidly and also freezes and shakes the mouse.  Once I deactivate trackpoint it works fine, but it's one of my favorite features. I just bought the computer two weeks ago so I can't imagine the keyboard breaking already. Is it a software problem or something?

Question: R400 trackpoint

I have a Thinkpad R400 with Windows 7 installed. I have tried several times to activate the trackpoint with no success.I have checked in the bios screen which lists it as active (automatic) but when I check under mice in the control panel it only gives me the touch pad not the track point.I performed a driver update which gave me UntraNav but it has the track point greyed out. Any assistance in this would be greatly appreciated.

Question: Choppy Trackpoint

I know I just posted a thread, but I figured that issue is global enough to warranty its own. But this one seems to be specific to me.I'm a new Thinkpad (and trackpoint) user, and the trackpoint is very choppy for me. It seems to skip frames. For example, making a circular motion with the trackpad results in a continuous, smooth motion. But not so with the trackpoint. It seems to be micro-jumping (or skipping frames as I prefer to call it). This is easily noticeable when holding down the middle trackpoint button and attempting to scroll a page. The page does not scroll smoothly at all (has nothing to do with smooth scrolling, that's something else and not what I'm talking about). Now this isn't just with this X220. Before the X220 I briefly owned a x120e that had this EXACT same problem. I asked about it and people told me that is not normal. So I returned it and got this X220, but it's the same problem. The weird thing is that while this choppiness is present in Windows, it was just fine during the Windows install process. I've tried: disabling the trackpad, reducing/increasing trapoint sensetivity, updating drivers, removing drivers and reinstalling, bumping the priority of the driver to high. None helped. What are the chances I'd receive two machines with the same problem?

Answer:Choppy Trackpoint

Disabling the trackpad from the BIOS fixed the issue it seems (its definitely much smoother). Diasbling it within Windows did not help. If I recall correctly disabling the trackpad in the x120e from the BIOS was not an option. Too bad. But odd that others do not have this problem. Oh and my palm was not resting on the trackpad
