First Time Cleaning Laptop

Question: First Time Cleaning Laptop

Hey everyone!

A friend of mine gave me an HP Pavilion dv1411se notebook and I would like to give the fan and heatsink a thorough cleaning, although I'm pretty positive the fan doesn't work at all. However, I've seen pictures online of how much dust can build up on the heatsink and I'd like to get that taken care of. Ultimately, I would like to replace the fan and possibly the heatsink altogether, but for now, giving both a proper cleaning will give me peace of mind. My objective is to pull the thing apart in order so do so.

This will be my first time doing anything like this and my reason for wanting to is the fact that computer repair shops are just too damn expensive for my budget, plus I'd really just like to know how.

Does anyone have any good words of advice before I tear into my laptop? I've read somewhere that static electricity can "fry the system." Is this true? I'm planning on getting rid of the dust from the heatsink with a vacuum, but I've also read that this isn't always a safe practice either.

I'm gonna use the HP Maintenance and Service guide to assist me:

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00636251.pdf

If anyone else has any other tips or suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

Preferred Solution: First Time Cleaning Laptop

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, I'm sitting here with my Sony Vaio model PCG-61112L juuuust about cracked open and waiting to be cleaned. I've noticed lately that fps during games has been dipping, and i'll get gpu driver errors whe browsing the web, causing my display to refresh (always recovers). This is why i am cleaning it out now.

I've got my RAM chips, battery, and what i think is the hard drive removed, and all screws out. When i tried opening the bottom case, i then noticed that there is a small black cable attached to the case. I have no idea what this is, but it is attached to a ribbon thing next to where the RAM chips were labelled as "To MB." Sounds like it has something to do with the motherboard, but all i want to do is disconnect it or something so i can get the bottom casing off so i can clean this thing. Any help on this would be fantastic.

Do you have a service manual for this laptop? My advice, since you don't sound very knowledgeable or experienced, is to stop what you're doing. Your problems about FPS & GPU driver errors are most likely due to other issues than the computer needing cleaning.

My friend has a laptop that he has had for about 5 years now. He has stopped using it because it is slow and often freezing. It is running windoes 7 i think. I said I would take it and try to sort it out for him as I know you guys would be able to help me. I don't think he ever did malware/virus scans. Probably everything that would need doing is going to have to be done. He has probably never done any updates to anything. I don't really know where to start so was hoping someone could talk me through it.

Answer:Cleaning up and removing malware from an old laptop for the first time

1/ Is there any Data that requires to be backed up first - That he needs ?.....DO THAT FIRST !
If not - i would restore it to the day he got / if it has a Factory Restore Partition.

2/ If you choose the Factory Restore option , goto the Manufactures site of the Laptop / enter the Model etc / follow the Instructions to Restore.

After that is done / you then need to do all Windows Updates / Antivirus / and Install your Programs.

3/ If you need to just clean it up / or the restore partition is not available , and just remove any Malware / Viruses etc....

Then you will need to post the Make / Model and wait for assistance in the removal of such and post various Logs as instructed.

I have completed the Major attitude removal guide. I have attached the 2 reports for someone to provide feedback on what is wrong with my desktop PC. My infection occurred when I upgraded from the internet security suite Kaspersky 6 to version 7 which is still active now. Please can a qualified person interprete the reports that I have attached?

Cheers!

Fan IssueI've cleaned my laptop sometime this month after about two years of use. Popped it open, blew everything, popped it back. I saw a post before posting this about removing the battery before cleaning so i'm considering going back and doing that. I usually keep it running in high performance because I use it for gaming. Core/CPU usage is almost never above 10%, currently sitting at 2%-4%. Memory is usually high because I only have a 500GB SSD, currently at 58%. The other stats (disk, network, and GPU), sit at 0 (although GPU will boost to about 60% when gaming). Currently, I have it in balanced mode and set the maximum core usage to 40% and it's still going strong. Any suggestions?  Gaming IssueAlso on a side note, if anyone can assist me with a gaming issue I'm having. My computer has a 960 GTX, i74720GQ @ 2.6GHz, and 500 GB SSD (samsung evo--upgraded from 1TB HD) and I'm having issues with my FPS in-game. It locks at 30 or FPS across all games. I do have two GPU's (integrated and 960 GTX) and have always used the GTX as the primary source, uncapped in-game graphics, limited background interference (services, programs, etc.) and possibly other things I can't think of but cannot release the in-game FPS cap. Even when settings are at the lowest settings. In previous times, if I were to uncap, it'd reach above 60 easily consistently but now when it's uncapped, it never goes above 60. One might ask what changed? After upgrading from HDD to SSD, I had to reset my ... Read more

I have a Dell C600 Laptop with Windows 2000 on it and would like to clean it up to get more speed out of it, also considering expanding the memory. I have a good laptop also, but use this one mainly for downloading FLAC. files using Burst. Is there a good program I can run to erase all the stuff in the computer without wiping out my Windows 2000, I dont think I have the installation disk anymore. If not, can I make a back-up disc and then just clean everything out and start all over, this poor thing just runs slow and has had a ton of programs loaded on it over the years.

Thanks,

Answer:Cleaning up a Laptop

No, not really, I believe, but Revo uninstaller is a possibility. You still have to uninstall programs one by one, though. You'll find a number of other cleaning possibilities in there as well. http://majorgeeks.com/Revo_Uninstaller_d5706.html

Hello,

My friend who doesn't know much about computers handed me over his laptop with the message 'it is not working properly'. So I thought it would be a good first step to check on malware. I followed your procedure. You can find the logs in attachment.

Question: Laptop cleaning

So, I know I can use compressed air on my computer to clean it out, but can I use compressed air on a laptop ?
I plan on taking the back off and cleaning all the dust out of the laptop to make it quieter, I just dont want to hurt the lappy.

Answer:Laptop cleaning

Yep, sure can. There nothing in there that can be damaged by a compressed air. I don't know if turning a fan with compressed air damages it or not but just in case I hold a fan down and prevent it from spinning when I dust it. So if you see any fans, try to prevent them from spinning when you dust out your laptop.

Hi
Every day I have to clean my PC
There seems to have loads on the browser clean up yet I only use it for basic stuff
I use internet explorer as my default browser and I can't seem to download Google and Firefox keeps freezing
any advice

Answer:Cleaning my laptop every day

Not sure why you would want to clean it every day. Are you using C Cleaner if so that will be deleting all of the cookies unless you save the ones you need.
If only using I/E try internet options and tick delete browsing history on exit.
I would give your security programs a run including Malwarebytes to see if they find any problems.

Question: Cleaning my Laptop

How would I go about cleaning the fan on my laptop? I was told I could use compressed air to clean it out, but w/o spending money is there another way of doing it?

I need it cleaned because the laptop overheats when im playing games btw.

Answer:Cleaning my Laptop

Eh, have you tried blowing real hard?

Really! Blow as hard as you can through a straw and it will direct and compress the air a bit and should work better.

Just be careful not to pass-out.

It should work to a point and get rid of most of the dust. It make take a few rounds depending on the enclosure.

Question: cleaning laptop

I am running Windows XP Pro with Norton Internet Security 2012, together with Norton Utilities 15 on my laptop. Today I read on PD Advisor an interesting review of PC Tools Performance Toolkit. (I also use CCleaner regularly.)
I find Utilities rather slow and clunky though it does its job if you're patient. For example the disk fragmenter and boot optimizer take for ever.
Do you recommend that I run both your reviewed Performance Kit along with Norton or is there too much duplication and use of too much disk space? In that case, which should I use and could I safely remove the Utilities if appropriate?
Many thanks in advance.

Answer:cleaning laptop

Overkill
stick with what you have.
If not satisfied with performance then uninstall and try a different optimiser but to be honest they can cause more harm than good.
CCleaner is one of the best and safest tools around, using it to clear out rubbish, clean the registry and control start up programs plus an occasional defrag (NOT SSDs)of the hard drive, adequate memory / virtual memory, and a "clean" system is enough.
My 7 year old P4 XP systems stills flies with out the use of optimisers.

Realized around 1/1 that Microsoft Sec Essentials virus definition not updated since October. Tried to manually update... unable (update process stalls). Ran full scan but MSE ran a quick scan instead, and somehow updated the virus def'n to 12/31 (which is not right since I didn't even realize the problem until after that date). When I try manually updating, it still stalls.

Also, windows update states last update was 11/11 (which I see that many updates were done on that date), but warned that the most recent check was 2/8 (9 months back). Also unable to manually update (update stalls).

Answer:Cleaning Kid's Laptop

I'm happy to say and also sorry to say your problems are not due to malware. Your logs are all clean. You are just having problems like many other people have run into where Windows just does not want to update. Some people think it could be some particular Windows Update that just causes it to break. I have run into this myself while helping friends fix their PCs that they thought were infected and they were clean. The only issues is the Windows update ( including MSE ) will never complete. There are a variety of different fixes that people propose, but my experience is that in most case, none of the fixes help. I fixed one of my friends by reinstalling and it worked fine for a few days and then all of a sudden it got into the same state again. Windows Update has always been a very buggy software that is prone to getting broken for may reasons. Sometimes it breaks due to third party software especially registry cleaners or performance tweaking tools.

You can try posting in our Software Forum. Maybe you will be one of the lucky ones that one of the fixes helps.

Question: Cleaning Laptop

I have a Gateway MX3414. I recently bought what I thought was compressed air, but it was electronics cleaning stuff. It says not to use it on anything energized. I was wondering if I could use it to cean out the intake and other holes in my laptop.

Answer:Cleaning Laptop

Quoteelectronics cleaning stuffSure you can use it.  You could also use hairspray or a garden hose or olive oil or ether or spray-paint....  None of them will actually be any good at cleaning out your laptop orifices but you could try.Get with it, you know that compressed air is the proper tool so go get some.  Follow the Gateway instructions on cleaning the notebook, blowing accumulated dirt into the works might not do it much good.   Be especially careful to stop the cooling fan, if fitted, from rotating at high speed when the compressed air hits the fan impeller. Oh, and welcome to the Computer Hope forums.Good luck.

Hi, I have a gaming laptop but it has been running slower than usual lately. I know it's not a virus because I just recently re-installed the os and I have anti-virus and firewall installed before accessing the internet. I don't know exactly what's wrong with the computer but I read an article online that said I should be cleaning it yearly to prevent dust build up in my heatsink. A particular example of the differences in preformance between my computer when I just got it and my computer at present is the inability to play games at 1270X840, instead I have to lower the screen resolution to around 1024X720(not sure if the measurements are right on, but their close to those numbers). Also, I notice when my computer is on, a large amount of heat (kind of like a radiator) comes from the vent. Pc specs:4gb ramintel dual core 2ghz proccesornvidia geforce 7000

Answer:help with cleaning laptop

Overheating, you may need to find a program to keep the fan running properly, Or, if it is a serious case, the fan may be jammed or broken, in which you may need a new one

Question: cleaning laptop

my son just got a hp laptop with windows vista home premium
i know it has been used to download porn i want to check if any is still
on it if so how do i permanently get rid

Answer:cleaning laptop

did you get any recovery CDs with the machine
If you go into
start
programs
there may be under HP a recovery manager, which will allow you to put the machine back to the condition it was on when it was first purchased - But you will lose any Data and any programs that where installed later
OR
you can use the recovery CDs, which may have been supplied or made from the machine - same program

otherwise

you want to
go onto internet explorer - assuming this is the only browser
tools
internet options
delete history
temp files

empty recycle bin

if videos have been downloaded they may be in a number of formats
* .wmv
*.flv
*.mp4
formats

do a search across the c: drive and any other drive it may have D: or E: for these types of files

Question: laptop cleaning

My wife has a Dell Inspiron laptop. We have never owned a laptop before and she was wondering how to clean the screen? Any advice?

Answer:laptop cleaning

Hi there - many places like Staples sell anti-static "wipes" that are designed to clean screens. Whatever you do - do NOT use Windex or any kind of spray on a laptop screen. (I've had bad experience in this!) The spray can drip down and cause the screen to go bad.

Good luck!

I recently changed our wireless routers security from W.P.A. to W.E.P.. I downgraded because my sister purchased a internet T.V.box so she can watch her favorite foreign language shows. The box only accepts W.E.P. encryption.

I use a WRT54GL which I loaded up with Tomato V 1.21. After the changes to our router, the laptop and one of our wireless dekstop PC (both machines with XP) keeps getting disconnected. My sisters' Ipod Touch works fine though. Sometimes it would show not connected but it actually has connection. Websites, I.M. and pinging worked but for only sometime and it will disconnect. I will reconnect (it takes longer than WPA) and would show connected then change to not connected after sometime.

Both PC and laptop only use the MS XP Wireless Zero Configuration.

Edit: Should I just forgo with wireless encryption (WEP, WPA) for MAC filtering? Or can I have both? Redundancy? Cheers!

hello, i'm been using an HP laptop for a year now, and now i'm having this issue with my intel core i-7 5500U speed lock. sometimes it's normal, going between 2.5-2.7 GHz.. but at times and for no reason what so ever. it goes down to 0.15 GHz, yes. that low and i don't even know why, please help me if possible

Answer:my laptop's core speed is decreasing from time to time

Hi Haz,Laptops do this for power savings when the OS Doesent demand a high Prosessor speed. If you would like it to be high all the time and get better performance you can goStart Menu>Control Panel>Power Options>Then tap on High Performance and beside that press "Change Plan Settings">Then press "Change advanced power settings">Now go down to the prosessor power management section and expand it>Then goto "Minimum Prosessor State" and put it to 100% If this has helped please let me know!

Would like to clean laptop cooling fan from dust/dirt. I understand the importance of clearing vents from all laptop openings as well as underneath (Compaq V6133CL model). On my old compaq, I could open from bottom. This model doesn't seem to have that ease. Do I really have to open the whole laptop? Access to hard drive and ram very easy to access. Also, seems this model runs hotter. I am using a cpu heating temperature gauge (mobilemonitor - but not sure how accurate). Seems I'm running 50 to 65C. Again, old compaq seems to run much cooler. Can I open this laptop, can I clean cooling fan and can I re-assemble? Checked with Compaq and will not void warranty. Lastly, is this a PC World job or computer repair company task? Thanks, Skip

I wiped out the hard drive of Windows XP Home and installed XP Pro SP3. Most things worked except drivers. (Pro is on my new laptop; used that disk) I downloaded a program that looked at my hard drive and let me know what was missing or outdated. Scanned, then started to reinstall missing drivers. 2 would not install, telling me I needed a chipset utility program. As all was working at that time, I turned it off.

I took my Dell Inspiron 1100 apart to clean the fan assembly and keyboard. Upon reassembling, the computer comes on and makes a less than usual noise, but the screen does not come on. I tried to exit using the start button, the control U and then U again and nothing happened. I had to shut down using the turn off button.

Dell Inspiron 1100
Windows XP pro SP3
512 MB Ram
That is all the info I can remember, not being able to look at the info now.

Thanks for helping this very senior lady!!

Hi everyone! I had an ASUS G74SX for three years now and these things are supposed to have a very good cooling system. For the first couple of years it worked like a charm. Then i stopped gaming for a while. A few weeks ago my buddy invited me to play world of tanks and i started a game for the first time in over a year. After about ten minutes i noticed that the GPU fan was roaring like a hurricane and part of the laptop was hot enough to cook eggs on. I checked the temperature with GPU-Z and it read up to 98 degrees celcius while playing and 55-60 degrees while the laptop was idling. My best guess is that the vent is clogged up with dust and i wouldn't be surprised since it has been sitting in a very dusty room. So i think i should clean them.

My question is would it be sufficient to just blow compressed air in to the vents or is it better to take the laptop apart and clean them? I will appreciate any any suggestions. Thanks!

Answer:Cleaning laptop GPU vents

Personally, I usually do a combination of both.

Blowing into the vents can dislodge dust etc built up, when I do this I usually take all the back panels off (mainly just the easily removable ones that provide access to HDD, RAM etc), this gives the dislodged dust somewhere to go.

If it is easy to get the back fully off then you can generally get more of the dust out

Answer:Need help cleaning up Daughters Laptop

Hi, Yotaru.

Welcome to TSG.

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

If the above link is broken, try this link. Make sure you extract and save the Hijackthis.exe file in a Permanent folder, rather than a Temp folder.

Okay, you have actually posted in the wrong section but seeing as you asked very nicely i will post anyway...Please download MalwareBytes Anti-Malware from http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-...&tag=button * Make sure you are connected to the Internet. * Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. * When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. * When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked: o Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware o Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware * Then click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. * If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. * Press the OK button to close that box and continue. * If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine. On the Scanner tab: * Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. * Then click on the Scan button. * If asked to select the dr... Hi, my daughter spilt a drink over the keys on her laptop. Now I know you can wash a normal keyboard belonging to a desktop, but its a bit different on a laptop. Any ideas please?Regards Michael

Answer:cleaning a laptop keyboard

Not good news! I suggest you take this to a specialist for cleaning and check if you have any insurance to cover any damage. If the computer is still working after it has dried out be very careful. If it was a fizzy drink or example, you will get sugar residue that will probably now be sitting on your motherboard. Add a bit of heat and it could permanently damage it.Removing a keybard, depending on the model is a little tricky and you would need specialist (torx)screwdrivers. I wouldn`t recommend it unless you are fairly competent and confident with cleaning up the actual motherboard.

I've been using this old laptop while waiting to get my new one. It's been used by a couple of different people over the years. Yeah it doesn't have much memory but it seems slower than it ought to be when just doing stuff like facebook .... and doing a lot of disk accessing. It's been slow ever since I started using it several weeks ago. I figured I should look for keyloggers or whatever that might be slowing it down and I came across this forum. I ran the malware procedure - see the attached logs. What should I do to clean things up?

Also I've been getting a popup message frequently: Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Yeah it doesn't have much memory but it seems slower than it ought to be when just doing stuff like facebook .... and doing a lot of disk accessing.Click to expand...

But this is exactly your problem. You do not even have 1/3 of the amount of memory I would recommend to efficiently/effectively run Windows XP SP3 and the other applications you are running and thus it has to keep on swapping to disk. You need to upgrade the memory or you need to stop loading all the junk you don't need to load at start and you will have to uninstall AVG 2013 since you cannot run a modern antivirus program like this with so little memory. Especially since this is an old slow CPU too.

While not a topic for this forum, I will give you the below things to do.

Uninstall AVG2013 immediately
Also uninstall the left over junk from Symantec/Norton that is stilll installed and running
LiveUpdate 2.6 (Symantec Corporation)
Norton WMI Update

Then run this >> Norton Removal Tool 20.0.0.21
Uninstall the below junkware
CursorMania Firefox Toolbar
CursorMania Internet Explorer Toolbar

Stop allowing all the below to load at startup. You don't need them.

My young son spilt orange over part of my keyboard. Now some of my keys are "sticky" and unresponsive. I have tried some basic cleaning with a screen wipe trying to get as best as possible between/underneath the keys.Anybody any tips out there... is it drastic measures in terms of replacing/dismantling, or can I simply clean myself...? Any particular cleaning agents? Thanks,Nick

Answer:Cleaning a laptop keyboard

if left to dry out completly it may be ok.if still sticky you could always try removing the keys with a screwdriver one by one and cleaning underneath them with some isopropanol achohol maybe.

Hello,

I have an older Dell Latitude D820 running XP Pro sp3. 5 years old. I used it on a windows small business server 2003 network and am now using it at home. I removed alot of the junk related to wsbs but believe I have missed some. I want to remove or disable all of the client garbage that was loaded onto to it. Does anyone have some sort of checklist?..Thanks

I am also having a wierd issue where after my "removal" of the wsbs stuff the CPU is operating at 25-40% yet only 3-10% shows on the task manager displaying all processes. I have scanned with MBAM, Spyware Doctor, and tdss killer and nothing turned up except for vs7debug was set aside by tdss killer as a potential threat. I also ran MS process monitor and it showed hardware interrupts as the culprit.

suggestions?

Answer:cleaning up ex-work laptop

Alternative to cleaning out what you don't want:

Backup what you do want to save. (files, folders, favorites, mail/address book if you use an email client)

Restore the Dell to factory condition and start with a clean slate.

If there is no recovery partition or you don't have restore disks you can order them from Dell.

The surest way of cleaning it up is to
make sure your data backup is current,
make sure you have the drivers you need,
format the disk,
install Windows and drivers,
get all Microsoft Windows updates,
restore your data and install the applications you actually still use.

Hi,

I followed the Malware Removal Guide yesterday and did everything as instructed. I am still having issues with being redirected to random search pages or other internet pages when I click on links in Firefox.

I think the problem came on 3.11.09 when my son tried to run some sort of program crack. There were other problems but I think the cleanup took care of most of them.

I'm attaching the logs from the cleanup. Please let me know what else I need to do!

Hi all,

I have a question about cleaning out a laptop, I want to take as much as possible off to get this laptop I have as close as I can to 'new'.

1. I didn't get the cds or anything else to recover the laptop if something big happened. (Is this a BIG problem? I was told they were 'lost'.)
2. When using Disk Cleanup, it tells me I have 10.4GB in User File History, can I reclaim this? (How do I know what I can safely delete and not delete from that Disk       Cleanup screen?)

3. What programs can be deleted from the laptop, or reset to not start with the laptop? (I have no clue, and really can't afford to screw up lol.)

Thanks everyone for taking the time to read and/or reply!

Then i ran malwarebytes and adaware to pick up any spyware. The Malwarebytes scan found Vundo files, which i found is a virus, so i ran the VundoFix but it did not detect anything else. You should do a RAM upgrade. Try thishttp://www.crucial.com/index.aspxMy Mother in law is running an older HP with an Intell Celeron CPU, 512 MB of RAM w/ Windows XP SP3, and its slow as a snail. I cant imagine running anything less than that. Also, it wouldnt hurt to do a complete reintall of the OS. If you can try to do a backup of the My Documents folder at the very least. Write down a list of all the programs under the All Programs list in the Start Menu.I would also try running Killdisk as a extra step, before you reintall the OS. http://www.killdisk.com/

ok, so my specs are -
toshiba tecra s2
intel m centrino 1.73 gHz
1x512 MB ram
nVidia geforce 6600

the cause -
i decided to clean my laptop because toshiba has crappy cooling and it clogs up and overheats. i used a site called iris(something i forgot what).com and it had complete instructions on how to take apart the machine. I took it apart, cleaned it by using a Q-tip on the fan and by using a compressed air thingy to blow all the dust out of everywhere.

the problem -
i put it back together, but what happened was i switched 2 screws by accident, so instead of having 2 3mm screws in their holes i have 2 5mm screws and visa versa (random info but maybe thats it i dunno). then, i power it on and it beeps at me. first it was 3 short 4 short 3 short. but either i misheard or there is no such thing on earth. i checked the keyboard, ram, mouse, vga cables.....everything. turned it back on and it gives me the classic 3 long beeps - no keyboard. i've tried a lot of things - hooked up a ps2 keyboard through an adapter into a usb port, plugged the wire in backwards, cleaned the keyboard with the air thing repeatedly, checked for jammed keys...nothing works

and i probably wont have any financial support cuz my dad says its my fault (and it is) so help would be very much appreciated

please and thank you,
a soul in distress

Answer:laptop cleaning gone crazy

Ouch.

Not knowing where the screws were located, as to the longer ones being a problem and causing damage, it's hard to say.

I have seen dreadful and fatal equipment damage done to electronic equipment by swapping screws...

I would never advise anyone to disassemble a laptop for cleaning, usually air up the exhaust port will achive enough.

The problems always occur on reassembly of course but could relate to some accidental damage done on disassembly. I have dealt with sensitive and delicate electronics since 1970 but would not unneccesarily dismantle a laptop if there was another way.

Your 3-4-3 beeps are a mystery as they are not a standard BIOS code.

Good luck, but look closely as to the possibility the longer screws may have intruded to a circuit board?

I have only removed McAffee using the removal tool. Firstly, a big thanks to all of you who are working hard behind the lines to help root out spy/malware.

A friend was having trouble browing the internet, hijacked ie homepage, and getting prompts on his desktop to download software to "protect" his computer. So I offered to help him out.

The computer in question is an HP Pavilion ze4400 running Windows XP home edition with SP3.

I started by running Spybot S&D which found somewhere around 1000 entries which it fixed. I assumed that there would be more that it didn't find and then I came across your site.

I followed your procedures and the logs are attached below.

Rootrepeal.exe had some trouble running, with a low virtual memory error coming up. There's not much physical memory on this laptop (which should be getting an upgrade soon) so I boosted the page file size up to 1024mb and encountered the same problem.

Yes it missed a lot of bad stuff as you can see from the other logs.

There's not much physical memory on this laptop (which should be getting an upgrade soon) .[/QUOTE]Yes this is a major problem since there is only a total of 256MB of memory and only 44MB free. You cannot properly run Windows XP on this PC. In addition, this PC currently has NO PROTECTION installed and your friend cannot continue to run it this way. It is a major security risk. It needs to be upgraded to a minimum of 1GB but 2GB would be much better.

Hey everyone!

When it comes to my laptop I take good care of it overall except I have a few animals in the house (2 dogs & 3 cats LOL) so dust and dander builds up fairly easily. I was wondering if there are any easy ways to go about cleaning out the inside of a laptop? Possibly without opening it up? If I need to open it up I don't think it'd be too much of a problem for me but I just wouldn't be 100% comfortable yet I wasn't comfortable building my first desktop and ended up doing a good job after some troubleshooting. Are there are good external tools that could help clean the laptop internally?

One other question. It happens rarely but everyone once in a while my computer will just freak out/crash. The screen goes completely black and it starts to make a very annoying buzzing noise. The only way for me to fix this is to hold the power button down to shut it down that way. When I turn it back on it seems to work just fine. It also seems to happen the most while watching some kind of video files. Any ideas?

Almost forgot my laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad (3241?). I believe that is the model number I am on my desktop right now not near my laptop. I will change that if it is something different.

Thanks in advance everyone! All your input is greatly appreciated!

Answer:Cleaning Laptop Internally...Ideas?

It would be enough to get under the keyboard, and blast out the dust with compressed air. Otherwise you can just use air to blast the dust from the vents on the outside of your laptop.

Buzzing could be your CPU fan. The CPU fan could be running slower due to wear or dust, therefore heating up the CPU.

Is it possible - and easy - to open the G20 to remove dust.

Mine is approx. 4 years old and has never had an internal clean.
I'd suspect dust has gathered on the cooling fan(s) and they would benefit from a gentle brush clean.

Any advice welcomed.
JG

Answer:Qosmio G20 laptop - internal cleaning

Hi

It is definitely possible but not so easy. The Qosmio notebooks are definitely most complicated and without enough experience and Maintenance manuals you should not do anything.

Qosmio notebook is very expensive notebook and, in my opinion, you should not make such risk to disassemble it on your own. Small mistake can destroy the screws or small plastic parts. The disassembling must be done following defined steps.

Please don't understand me wrong but be careful about this. I know that you will not be happy with my comment but I don't want to say: do it, it is easy. And if something goes wrong what you can do? Replacement parts are expensive and cannot be ordered so easy.

Maybe you should ask for professional help.

Hello.
I know this isn't exactly modding, but since opening up a laptop is not considered conventional for many of the models even today, I figured that if anybody would be able to help me, it would be modders
My question is simple: How do I open up my Laptop in order to clean the dust out of it? I have it for over a year now,
and because I live in a dusty place, my computer is filled with dust, which makes it harder for it to keep cool, thus making
it shutdown on me. I know it's because of the heat because I tested it myself. Please advise.

Answer:Cleaning my laptop - Toshiba P25-S507

Gunblade.........Chances are it won't have ANY dust in it. Every desktop computer I've worked on has had a considerable amount of dust and hair in it that I've had to remove. However......every laptop I've opened up to work on, has been clean inside. And I've worked on some real relics. LOL Laptop fans are pretty lame, and I guess thats why they don't get dusty inside. Not a whole lot of air movement. If you insist on opening it up to have a look though, Go to the Toshiba site, and see if they have instructions on disassembling the case. You need to be REAL familiar and delicate with opening up laptops. I've had to fix way too many of them that people have tried to open up, and tore apart delicate ribbon cables, and broke pieces of the case and stuff. I will tell you this.......with the correct instruction, laptops open up easily. And NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING on them, needs to be "pried" to open them up !!

Hello! I have a friend whose daughter's laptop managed to get infected.

About six weeks ago, she was on Google Maps, when the window suddenly redirected to Freecalls.com. Since then, the computer has slowed down badly. It will frequently stop responding; sometimes after less than five minutes, sometimes after more than an hour. Once, when she was looking in her music folder, it just shut down on its own -- in spite of the fact that it had a full charge.

The computer was running Avast and Online Armor. Online Armor is now uninstalled, and I plan to have her put Comodo on the computer at the end of this. I am a little disturbed about this thing getting past Avast and Online Armor. Did I have something set wrong? :confused Any thoughts are appreciated.

At any rate, her logs are attached. There is an interruption of a couple of days due to her mom having surgery.

She uses the laptop for school, art (visits art and anime sites), and music (iTunes). I have been concerned about some of the art sites, but that's because I am not familiar with them.

Thank you so much for your help!!!

Answer:Cleaning Friend's Laptop of Freecalls.com

It looks like the scans took care of the malware. Let's just clean up a few things:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - - (no file)

The colgate actibrush. I like this one over the Crest model because the head is interchangeable.

I like those aerosol cans with the air in them :grinthumb

Other than that pick up one of those $6 rotating brushes. If that's not what you're talking about...

*I'm getting good use out of TSG tonight !*

Ok, so my crappy dell inspiron 600m was awesome for the first 6 months I had it, then it started to let me down. I've had it for 2 years now, and it's battle weary. It's crashed several thousand times, the hard drive is a twit, yet it keeps on ticking. In one crash incident I had to talk to dell, get an OS disk and start over completely from scratch, loosing everything. In the process of this, I was talking to some person from halfway around the world while my GF was
performing play by play steps on the dell. Well in the end she put 3 OS on it, and only one works, and it's been that way since last year. Now I'm interested in putting LINUX on it, and I want to completely wipe this bad boy out and take care of that pesky OS problem. I DON"T have an OS disk, but I do have the WIN XP boot floppies and chkdsk. I have a Linux UBUNTU live disk and I want to make sure that I can install Linux onto my laptop before I end up screwing myself over and having to go out and find another Dell Win XP OS disk. If I can even restore the dell to factory issue, that would allow me to install Linux, anything. Help !

And thank you in advance.

Answer:Solved: Cleaning out my Dell Laptop

Hello Pyccnn. I have an advent 7109 laptop so I'm not sure if this will help but I had need to run a systems recovery without a disk so you could try this. On reboot and before the process is initiated press the Fn key and then continually click the F key mine is F10 you may have too try others it took me five goes until I found the right one.
Good Luck.

Hello and thanks for reading.

I have a ViewSonic tablet laptop that had the unfortunate experience of having a keylogger type worm installed onto it, so that my "friend" was able to spy on all of my emails. I figured the best approach would be to clean the hard drive with DBAN. This worked fine on my desk top...and appeared to work well on my laptop as well.

The problem now is that when I try to reinstall the recovery disks for the laptop and even the windows XP that I use for my laptop, I get the same error: (blue screen)

A problem has been tetected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer...blah blah blah.

Technical information:

***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF99E640, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

My laptop does not have a cd player, but I am using an addonics peripheral CD player.

The error occurs after the recover disks boot up, the computer says to push R for display system recovery options. I do so and I see the appropate "starting systems recovery" scroll at the bottom of the screen.

After that, I see the error.

I also tried to use my desktop windows disk to see if I had a problem with my recovery disks...same thing.

Any help would be appreciated.

Mike in St. Louis

I have just taken apart my VAIO E Series and cleaned the fan, but then after I put the laptop together, it won't start. The light at the start button turned on, and then after 2-3 seconds turnes off, and then turned on again. It kept doing such with the battery, or without the battery(plugged in charger). How could I solve this problem? Did I permanently damaged my laptop. Please help me, it is a crucial time in my life, and without my laptop I cannot continue working.

Answer:Laptop won't start after disassembling and cleaning the fan

i did slightly touch the main processor a bit, but i mainly worked with the fan. I didnot fiddle or damage any wires i think.

i wrote this thread with my phone.

I decided on a whim to clean the fan on my laptop for the first time and now I've noticed my laptop seems to have gotten noisier, as in, the fan seems to start up more often than before. I had no trouble accessing the fan and followed advice found online to clean the fan; I used compressed air and a very small artists paint brush to gently remove all the dust. I haven't replaced the thermal paste because I hadn't any. I intend to do that if someone would be so good as to advise me on which to buy and how much of it I should use?But the issue of the extra noise first... I don't know if my laptop is overheating or not. I downloaded a program called SpeedFan and ran that and the results I got back are:HD0: 37CTemp1: 56CCore 0: 50CCore 1: 50C

Answer:Laptop fan noisier/starting up more after cleaning?

The thermal compound aids the thermal heat transfer between the CPU and the heat sink to remove as much heat as possible.Thermal compound must be in a very thin layer to work best so often when the heat sink is removed, it does not look like much. As mentioned, look up the proper method and reinstall it correctly. Under normal use, there is little difference between a base brand and something expensive that is supposed to be a 'super' compound as long as it is applied correctly.I do not recommend using the machine without the thermal compound properly reapplied, but in theory, as long as the temperature is within the CPU's normal range, it should be safe and a heating CPU will throttle back or shut down if it gets hot enough. Consider also that you are overworking your fan and that probably will shorten it's life as well. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Now, my screen is okay for the most part. But it does have a few fingerprints (from people that dont understand the importance of keeping the screen clean ). How do I clean it? I tried spraying Kensington Dust Blaster (air in a can), but that did not work. Also rubbing slightly with a cloth, because these screens are delicate. Does anyone know a safe way to clean the screen?

Answer:Cleaning a laptop screen....safely.
