Solved: Network Harddrive Vs Portable Harddrive

Question: Solved: Network Harddrive Vs Portable Harddrive

I am currently backing up weekly to a small external drive.. it is a small 20gigger. It has taken about 1 year or so to fill up. Now i am thinking long term.. i am considering purchasing a "network harddrive", one that is between 500gigz to 1tb. There is a smaller/more affordable Seagate external drive.. but it is not a "network harddrive".. it has 1.5tb.. versus a network drive that is about 2tb but it cost about 314.

My question is, thinking long term.. and considering the setup i have.. which is a regular PC acting as a server.. what should i get?

Your suggestions are appreciated

Thank you

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

after a bit of advice, if any one has time amid the current trojan epidemic!

I've a portable usb harddrive unit that was on a pc that became infected with a rootkit trojan (and still is). Now from the infected PC I was able to scan the unit with Dr web and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, neither picked up anything. Both find the trojan on the infected pc but can't kill/remove it.

There are some files on that portable unit I could really do with accessing from another pc, is there anything I can do to secure it? Or prevent cross contamination?

any help/suggestions very welcome.

Hey, when I plug my brothers 1TB 3.5 external HDD into the power, it makes this noise (see file I uploaded), sounds like it's trying to do something but it cant? Stuck?

I was wondering how I would go about repairing this.. or is it screwed?

I think it's been dropped, but my brother says otherwise, perhaps someone else dropped it w/o his knowledge.

Hopefully you guys can help me out.

i have buffalo 250gb hd ministation thats suddenly stopped being recognised by my xbox360 and laptop. When the ministation is connected to laptop it isnt allocated a letter in my computer and doesnt appear there at all, i know the laptop knows its connected though because the remove hardware safely icon appears on the system tray and i can also see it under disk drives in device management. Im stumpped as to how i get it to work.

Answer:Portable Harddrive Trouble

What is your OS?
The best place to start to diagnose and fix this is using your laptop. Look at the Windows won't recognize USB hard drive guide and see if this resolves that part of the problem. I have a feeling the file system on the external drive is corrupt and as a result cannot be recognised/allocated a letter.

I have a Western Digital external harddrive WD3200ME which I have been using successfully with a Toshiba Equium laptop running Windows 7. However the external harddrive is no longer recognised when it is connected probably due to a disconnection error [it was disconnected in error without using the computer's facility].
I have checked out the WD site,195,255/search/1/kw/windows%207
but as a novice am unable to understand what to do next or which option to pursue. Any suggestions / help would be welcome.

Answer:WD portable external harddrive - not recognised

Try this - Go to start, right click on Computer, select manage, select disc management. The next column on the left will show all drives with their corresponding letter. Your external hard drive may not show any letter assigned to it. Right click over where the drive letter should appear and select Change drive letter and path. Select whatever letter that you want to call it and click OK.
It should now be recognised.

my 512usb key got bent (my fault) so i need a new one.
usually carry some personal files but mostly programs and antispyware/virus/adware debating between a 1gig sandisk cruzer key...or maybe a portable harddrive but those suckers are big...then there's the new ipod nano, which im skeptical about, because is it a simple plug'n'play? or do you need to install software on every computer you use it with...
OR...if anyone can make a recommendation that would be shwweeeet...
the reason im debating a 1gig usb key is because it's around just under 100...where if i had another $150+ i can get a portable harddrive but it's a lot no idea where to go with this...thanks again.

Answer:usb key? portable harddrive? ipod nano???

came across these in work last week as our IT dept use the 100gb Portable drive ( they use it for PC build Images ) but they also have a smaller pocket one,

Seagate Pocket HD 5gb

Portable Hard Drive ( Horizontal dimensions: 1" D x 3.7" W x 5" H, Weight: 10.3 oz ) so very small and portable

but then USB pen drives are even smaller.

I am hoping very much that someone can help me out of a catastrophic situaition after having done a clean installation of Windows 7.

The situation is that I used my 500 GB Fugitsu HandyDrive to save Windows Easy Transfer file but now neither of my two computers will recognise the HandyDrive - they just keep saying ?new hardware found - looking for drivers? but don?t find any.

This is devastating as it is (or was!) almost ? full of months of hard work - some backed up some not (my fault of course).

I have been using the HandyDrive to work between my 18? and 10? laptops both of which had Vista.

I have the Acer Windows 7 Upgrade Kit for the 18? laptop and after 4 failed upgrade attempts and one failed clean installation, I tried one last clean installation which at last was successful. Each time I ran the Upgrade Advisor and carried out the recommendations. The Handydrive was shown as ?USB Mass Storage Device? and shown as being Compatible with Windows 7
I saved the Windows Easy Transfer file on the Handydrive.

After the successful installation of Windows 7, I carried out the Easy Transfer but was dismayed to find I had very few programs now (I had thought they would be on the Upgrade disc but cant find them). I took the Handydrive out of 18? (now with Windows 7) and plugged it into 10? (Vista) so that I could print the Upgrade Advisor file I had saved, which showed the programs I had before clean install. Disaster - it wouldn?t work! The HandDrive was not in my Cio... Read more

Answer:Could Windows 7 Have Reformatted My Portable Harddrive

When doing a clean install there is only one way to get your old prograams, you must reinstall with key numbers if applicable.

Reinstalling programs is one downside of clean install. Easy Transfer is used for settings, email, personal data, but not programs.

I truly wish you luck with your situation,

WD Portable HDD Unrecognized

I plug it in and the light on the drive comes on but it does not appear in My Computer, and in Safely Remove Hardware it is only labeled as "USB device"

My Dell Vostro 1400 Laptop recently quit working. Its only 4 months old.
I turned it on and it came to a screen saying,

"Windows dould not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

I inserted the setup disc and booted from it, when I got the the Repair option it says,"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue."

So I took the computer down to the local computer store and they put in a new 130 GB harddrive, ran the setup disk again and it displayed the same missing HDD message.

Anyone have any Ideas of what could be wrong???
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

Answer:Seagate Harddrive test tool fail but harddrive data seems intact

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

Or the Seagate tool. Whatever you have. Your title is confusing.

I recently had a very strong magnet. The magnet was then stuck (By a child) to my laptop. I then had errors on boot. I tried reinstalling Vista with the restore disk, but I recieved "Error - Cannot set temp path".

I today purchased a 250gb harddrive (a upgrade from my 120gb), and then Vista installed fine.

Now it runs fine, but I get bluescreens after random amounts of time, with errors involving a windows file. Unfortunately, I don't have the bluescreen error details at the moment. I have however uploaded the 3 minidumps from the 3 occasions.

Is it possible that another part of the computer was damaged by the magnet? Ram?

I have pretty old secondary hard drive (11 years) and currently in power settings there is an option to put hard drive in sleep mode if it's been idle for X minutes. Is it a good idea to disable this setting and let the harddrive spin all the time, since as I know, frequently enabling/disabling hard drives makes more damage than never putting harddrive to sleep.

Answer:Harddrive health with harddrive auto-stop in idle

Is the drive going to sleep now ?

You should consider buying a new drive to replace that one, then copy your data over before it dies

My T400 (bought last July) harddrive dead on me Sunday. I called helpcenter and received a replacement harddrive today. It was very fast. They asked me to return the old one. I have a concern about the security of my old harddrive. There are lots of personal information (data and files) on the old harddrive. If I return the old one, is there a chance my personal data be leaked? Is there any way I can delete the data and file on the old harddrive? I have no access to my old harddrive now. Any comments and suggestions will be appreciated greatly. Thank you for your time.

Answer:New harddrive from lenovo to replace my dead old harddrive

It will almost certainly be trashed, but you can't be 100% sure.  If you have a big magnet around, you could set the old one on it for a while - that should do the trick.

This morning a fan in my case was making strange noises (either CPU or GPU fan I think) and so I turned my computer off. I turned it on a little later and the computer was making a really odd clicking noise, so I unplugged each harddrive in turn to see which was causing it. I removed the problem drive (not the one with my XP installation on) and then turned the computer on again. This time it just said could not detect boot disk. I've tried installing XP again, but it gets as far as loading all the setup files and then my PC reboots. The bios still detects the harddrive still in.

The harddrives are just normal IDE 120gb drives (the removed one is a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 and the one still in is a Barracuda Seagate). I don't understand why the first stopped working (it is at most 6 months old) and why the 2nd one's installation is not detected (it is only a month or 2 old). Up til today, my computer was working perfectly. At the moment my whole computer is useless and the fan is still making the same weird noise occasionally.

Answer:One harddrive died, other harddrive's XP not detected

Welcome to Techspot

It sounds like the Drive you removed was the Primary, so the system can't find an MBR.
Also if that is right did you change the Jumper on the Slave left in your box?
Buy a new Fan, why take a chance ?

My desktop computer's motherboard was fried in a tragic lightning accident, but the hard drive is intact. I would like to purchase an enclosure for the hard drive and use it as an external hard drive. I'm posting here because I'm worried about compatibility.

Here are the hard drive details:
Seagate, S/N 90Z7588X
ST 380215A
P/N 9CY011-305
Firmware 3.AAD
Date code 08257
Barracude 7200.10
80 Gbytes

Will that work with any of these enclosures:

Thank you in advance for any help!

My grandma needed more harddrive space on her pc so I installed an 80 gb harddrive on her pc. Right now it's just her slave drive. Her c harddrive is only 20gb, so could I just copy everything on that harddrive to the 80gb and make that the master hard drive and the old one the slave? Or would that cause problems? I want to do this so she can continue saving files to her c harddrive instead of a different harddrive.

Answer:Is it posible to change the c harddrive to another harddrive?

You would need to create an image of the the current 20GB drive and map it onto the 80GB drive (most ghosting/imaging utilities allow you to expand the 20GB partition to the full size of the drive without issue). The most common way to go about doing this is with Norton Ghost, but it's not free. There's a few Linux boot disks that can do it as well I believe, but I don't know any off the top of my head. Hopefully someone will have a suggestion for a free boot disc.

I just purchased these two items:

and the problem is that the coolmax enclosure wont read the harddrive. I installed it correctly (this is not my first 2.5 external hdd), and the computer detects the harddrive. It says that it is installed and ready to use, but now drive is popping up in "my computer". I dont think that the harddrive is to big for the enclosure, its only 40gb and most enclosures maxes out at 40gb. I could not find out what this enclosure's max compatibility is, so i hope that this is not the problem.

It is not the enclosure that is broken, because i put a different harddrive in the coolmax enclosure and it works. And i tried the Fujitsu hdd in another enclosure and it does not work. So it is definitly the hdd

The harddrive is a ATA-6 and the coolmax enclosure is a IDE ATA 100. I dont know what the 100 stands for, but i dont think that is the problem.

any help would be greatly appreciated. This is a gift for my girlfriend and i really want this to work.

I just recently bought a used computer to replace the one I had which died on me. For some reason, my old harddrive isn't being recognized as the main hard drive when I remove the new one and plug my old one in. Both harddrives are recognized when I have my old one plugged up with the extra power and IDE cable, so I was wondering if it is possible to copy the contents of my old drive to the new one and have it where it transfers all of my installed software over without having to reinstall everything?

Answer:Harddrive to harddrive data transfer?

So what you tried to do is get WinXP to boot after it was installed on a different computer. This usually does not work well unless the Motherboard onthe new computer is almost identical to the old one. At the very least you would want to uninstall all drivers that were istalled as part of the old motherboard then do a repair installation of Windows XP. Then again if your installation of Windows is an OEM version of Windows it is not legal to use it on a second computer even if the second computer is a replacement for the first. If this is a retail copy of Windows then you can do it. You would need also the drivers for the new system.. As far as transfering installed programs from one hard drive to another and have them work properly if at all, it is not likely that you will succeed in doing so as installed programs make changes to the registry so that windows will know where to go look for the files to operate these programs. Just transferring the programs will not make the changes needed to your registry that an installation would make.

I currently have a laptop that is a few years old, anyhow I am building my own computer with a friend of mine. I have a external 120 gig Western Digital External Harddrive hooked up to my laptop now. (The external harddrive is brand new) I need a harddrive for the new computer I am building and was wondering would it work if i opened up the external harddrive casing and removed it from there and installed it in my computer i am building. Whats your thoughts on the change in power supply and could it work and what?

Answer:External Harddrive into Interal Harddrive

if you are building a laptop... no. it is built completely differently.
with a desktop computer you would not be able to either because the connection inside its casing is different. its better to keep your external the way it is and get an internal. you could then use your external as a backup.

hey everyone, my mom's computer isnt working correctly. it turns on but it doesnt boot up. nothing shows up on the monitor. she has very important files and links that are saved to her computer that she needs asap.

my first thought was maybe i could access her computer through the router that we share but other websites told me its impossible without remote connection. and we cannot setup connects or access her computer at the moment.

i would like to know if it would be a good idea to take her harddrive out and put it into another computer. id rather not put it into my computer (just in case something goes wrong) but my brother has a laptop and could we put her harddrive in his? just temporarily so we can get to those files.

is that the best idea? to transfer her harddrive? if so is it okay that its going into a laptop and not a desktop computer....

Answer:transfering harddrive (harddrive problem)

You're best bet it to get a 2.5 Adapter for laptop HDDs then you would take that adapter and connect it to a desktop CD-ROM IDE 2 channel 3.5 Ribbon cable goes into the adapter. There you could transfer files off that drive. That's how it's done in IT repair shop. Below cost $6.99.

can get it off here or try newegg or wherever you want go to a local store to get..

It also looks like this various version of the adapter

They all work..

I am trying to transfer about 80gb of movie files to a usb network hardrive hooked up to my Netgear WNDR3700 dual band router. I have windows 7 ultimate. I have my pc hard wired (gigabit) to the router temporarily to do the transfer but i'm only getting 3.3 MB/s. What gives? I thought I would at least get a lot faster than that? Is the usb network harddrive on the router limiting it to be this slow. I could've swore that usb transfered faster than that.

Any ideas?

Answer:Slow gigabit network transfer to usb network harddrive

3.3MB/s = ~330Mbps
USB2.0 = ~480Mbps

include overhead from both the TCP/IP and USB protocols, and the fact that you will never get a full 480Mbps out of USB, and the number is pretty close.

edit: damnit, I'm a tard. 3.3MB/s = 30.3Mbps. How did I do that?

so connect the USB drive directly to your computer and copy a large file; what kind of transfer speed do you get then?

My old laptop died a couple of weeks ago and i've now bought a new one. I'm attempting to configure my new laptop for a VPN connection to the university i attend. The only issue at the moment is that i can't figure out the settings i require. I managed to get the settings correct on my old laptop though.
So i'm curious. I've plugged in my old laptop harddrive in to an external harddrive caddy. Is there a way i can get the settings for the VPN connection? I think i mainly need the VPN connection URL or what ever it might be called. I obviously don't require my username and password that was saved (i imagine that it would probably be encrypted even if i did).
Before people suggest it, i have googled for the VPN connection 'URL' but i've found various help guides that the university have made throughout the pass 5 or so years. Of which none appear to work. Which is why i want to take it off my old harddrive, so i can then look for other settings that might be causing me not to make the connection.
Cheers in advance for any help given.

I have a LaCie 2big Network (2-disk RAID). I have attatched this to my Netgear router (cheap one) DHCP assigned it an IP address which i then made static.

My question is, i would like my friends/family to view the info stores on the drive. How would i do this?

I've looked into FTP but that the only thing i can find. I need something with a GUI or something that can be easy to use.

I was thinking abt getting a Westen Digital drive (myBook drive)

Any suggestions?

Answer:Lacie Network HardDrive

You want your friends/family to be able to view the files? sounds like you want them to be able to access your files over the internet (e.g. not on your local network).

This is going to be pretty involved, so I hope you're pretty saavy

Here's what I would do

1.) Buy a domain name from a cheap vendor (godaddy isn't a bad option here)
2.) Register for a custom DNS service from This allows your non static public IP to be routable externally to your home network. E.g. when your ISP changes your public IP, dyndns will switch the DNS entries to point to your new IP. This makes it "look" like your dynamic IP is actually static from the outside world
3.) Setup a web server in your home network. This is actually easier than it sounds. If you have a windows xp, windows 2003, windows vista or windows 2008 box- it should be pretty straight forward. You'll want to go to control panel -> programs and features -> installed components and check "Internet information services". This will install the appropriate IIS software on your computer
4.) Setup a new website in IIS and indicate that the content comes from a network share. This network share will point at your LaCie Network Harddrive

Hello there all.
I was not sure where to put this message so apologise if itís in the wrong place.
I am in need of some free or cheap software that can backup your hard drive as it is over the network to an image file.
It will need to backup to a network share.
I have been trying a Utility called Bart PE with Self Image. This is good but unfortunately when you want to restore your image to a new hard drive it wonít work because the new hard drive is much bigger than the last one.
I need this to work on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7
If anyone can suggest any software that I can buy or use that would be great.
If there is any more information needed please let me know.

I would like to back my computer up to an external harddrive, which is connected to the wireless home network.

I can see the drive in "My Computer", but when trying to select the drive in the Backup Settings, it does not show me that drive as one of the options.

Could anyone please explain if it is possible to set the backup up that way and if so, how?

Recently my network storage device has stopped me from accessing folders with the exception of music. All my pictures for the last 11 years are on it and not backed up anywhere else. Cannot find manual and have done reset but cannot remember URL to setup or admin username and password. Doesn't seem to be online and Edge is giving me no help whatsoever.

Answer:Edge DiskGo 3.5" network harddrive

Ouch if this is a NAS Device or has an IP you can use an app called FIng for your mobile device to find its ip so you can put it in the browser and get to the gui site. If you cant try fing you can use angry ip scanner for winwdows to find its ip.

If you want to try and recover files I would try recuva to obtain any data that has been lost. I am not sure if it is lost or just changed in the mapping.

As most guys will tell you here its very good idea to have three forms of back up. Local, external and online. If you don t know how to use fing or any of the software I duscusses please let me know. I will have links to the downloads below. Goodluck.
For Fing just type in Fing in either google play or Itunes.
For Recuva:

Hi All!

I bought a new router Asus RT-N12 and everything runs smoothly but I can't access my network drive that is connected to router via network cable. It worked fine with old router but now nothing.

Nework drive is LG's and LG NAS detector does find the drive but can't access it. NAS detector shows info and drive's gateway is same IP as router so should be ok.

Answer:Asus RT-N12 router and no access to network harddrive

How are you trying to connect? Can you put the NAS's IP in your browser and connect? (Usually they have a web interface) or go to "start" and type \\NAS's IP, should open explorer with the NAS shares. - Notice backslashes.
If the IP range is 192.168.1.x, is the subnet

First there are wireless/wired. Can these connect to shared windows folders?(stream media) or is the network just used for transfering data?

second, does anyone have any experience with the ebay cheapy's from hong kong?

I have had bad experiences with no name brands bought of ebay sent from china. there is a reason english speaking people are employed to write software for an english speaking countries.

lol all i know is that it IS cheap junk, i thought maybe it was just people over-reacting so i ordered some CDs (dirt cheap) and they came and they seemed good but of course as other people have said... they were burnt illegal copies properly wrapped and everything, however i guess there has to be some good coming out of Hong Kong as their feedback is top and they seem to have a lot of business and products

Hey, I know this question is asked quite often, but everything I've researched hasn't seemed to work. Maybe someone here has a solution?

Recently, I had to reformat the harddrive on my computer. I was using a Zonet 1602W PCI Wireless Card and I believe it may have had something to do with my computer malfunctions (BSOD's, constant restarting), so I purchased a new card.

I've tried installing both of them with no luck. It seems like they connect for a few seconds, but WZC will give me a "acquiring network address" error for eternity. I am unable to do any browsing regardless of how often I hit refresh. From looking at WZC (Wireless Zero Configuration), it doesn't seem to be receiving the packets. The IP address is so I am almost certain this is the issue, but I do not know how to correct this.

Before recently reinstalling, I was able to connect to the router. My computer (has wireless PCI card) is right downstairs below the router, but wiring it is not an option because i'd have to run it across the house.

My computer (downstairs) that can't connect has:
Gigabyte WP01GS Wireless PCI adapter
5dbI antenna
XP (Service Pack 2)

The other computer (upstairs) that can connect has:
WRT54GV8 Linksys Wireless Router
Cable Modem

I've tried uninstalling & reinstalling hardware, software, and various drivers (original and updated).

I've tried using the "repair" feature in WZC (it states "invalid... Read more

I am looking at my friend's 2 yrs old PC mainly due to not booting up. I just found out that his pc's 10 Gb harddrive has bad sectors of only 700Kb after using scandisk so I reinstall windows myself. It has booted up no problems and running fine as usual but is it necessary to buy a new harddisk? After all, it runs fine even though there are still 700Kb bad sections on existing harddisk. Advice will be much appreciated, thanksGary

Answer:Bad sectors in harddrive - need a new harddrive??

Assuming you reformatted the HD, did the bad sectors show during Formatting or was it some other software that decided you had bad sectors? If it was formatting that disclosed the problem then it may be true. If not it might be a spurious warning and could be ignored.

I tried searching on the net and couldn't find any indepth info on specifics but what I'm wanting to know is if I put gigabit network cards in my server and desktop PC and have a gigabit switch with jumbo frames turned on then the last bottleneck is my harddrives on both the server and the desktop PC. What kind of raid and harddrive setup would remove that bottleneck? An example with some links from the egg would be nice but not needed if you can just point out what I'm looking for on the harddrives and raid cards...

Thanks in advance.

Answer:removing harddrive bottleneck from gigabit network question

The maximum throughput on a gigabit network is about 100 MB/s so just research the read/write speeds of the drives you want to buy.

Alright, so I go to my local Fry's, and buy a brand new 500gb hard drive. And for some reason I knew it wouldn't initialize with 500gb, because for some reason, I mysteriously lose gb of space, even on brand new drives! my brand new western digital 250 drive, I only get 232, and now my brand new 500, I ONLY GET 460....***! a whole 40gb missing! I would like all 500, because I paid for all them :( If anyone knows what is wrong... I'm running Windows XP on a very new system. Any help would be great, thanks in advance

Answer:[SOLVED] New Harddrive

That's because HDD manufacturers use 10^9 (1 000 000 000) as the definition of 1GB.
Windows uses 1024^3 = 2^30 (1,073,741,824).
So, if you multiply 460 with 1.074 you get almost 500GB. The rest is "lost" when the drive is formatted.

I recently bought a new Lenovo G780, as my old HP laptop failed on me. However, the harddrive from my HP was fine, so when I got the new computer I decided to just take the harddrive out of my HP and put it into my new Lenovo. I've got the drivers for everything else to work, except my wireless network adapter refuses to install drivers from any source I can find. The adapter is an Atheros AR9285. I've tried lenovo's online drivers, and have even bought Driver Manager and asked the support staff to find drivers that work for me. They said they found one that worked, but I tried installing it and it said that "This computer is not manufactured by Quanta Computers" and then didn't install it. I have them working on that right now. But seriously, if they don't find a solution, what could the problem be? And how do I get my network adapter working again?

Here is some additional important information:
-The harddrive they gave me came with windows 7 x64 home edition. I am using windows 7 x64 professional.
-The wireless network adapter works if I use the harddrive the computer came with
-I am a chemical engineering college student who needs internet to do his assignments, and this little netgear usb adapter my friend lent me isn't cutting it

Please help me. Let me know if you need any further information

Answer:Lenovo G780 replaced harddrive, network adapter drivers fail

Hello and welcome nitro Mate one thing I didn't see you mention is the Device Manager in Control Panel have you tried that yet? CP > Device manager > open it up like in pic right click the adaptor > it will ask you to look for updates - it may come back as the correct one or not. See pic first.

If not have a look at this thread Best Atheros AR 9285 Driver? - Tech Support Forum there maybe something in there.

Essentially, I attempted to repair my Tablet (Toshiba Portege M400) by using a built in Toshiba recovery console. When it attempted to reset my Hardrive to Factory defaults, my PC crashed. I recieved an error message that said the repair failed. Now, I cannot boot up into my original partition. "Insert System Disc in Drive. Press any key when ready". From here, I attempted to reformat/reinstall Vista; however the installation could not detect my HD (as in there are no system discs inserted). In my desperation, I inserted a Windows Professional CD and attempted to repair the bootup by using the recovery console. However, as that the system does not detect my HD, this failed. Hi all,

I am new to this...I did do some searching tho and wasn't able to find info on this. I have a compaq presario laptop running windows xp. I bought it in 2004 but it hasn't been used very much. I recently started using it more and was running it with no virus protection (I know, bad, bad, bad). Of course I got the blue screen of death, it was saying that my hard drive was going bad. Every reboot it got a little worse until it wouldn't load windows at all. I tested the hard drive using one of the F buttons (in setup, before windows loads) and of course it said I had a bad hard drive. What I am wondering is the computer wasn't used much and I don't know how the hard drive could be bad already. Could it be a virus? I am thinking about trying to format and reload everything.....I wanted a little advice first though before really screwing up the computer....any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Solved: Do I really need a new harddrive or do I just have a bad virus

That message you are getting when you press the F key during the boot process is from the drive's on-board self testing feature. So it most likely is in fact going (or gone). There are mechanical components to a hard drive as well as the electrical ones, and they can (and do) fail over time. The on-board test doesn't know or care about the operating system or how the drive is formatted, it just looks at the physical status of the drive.

I have a 1 year old Dell laptop Inspiron 1300. Very recently (a week ago), it wouldn't start up -- it just gets stuck at the Windows loading screen. Holding down the power button to restart it would allow me to do a "startup repair" but that doesn't fix it.

I found a few relevant posts on Tech Support Guy, so I followed the instructions provided. Basically, I put in my Dell CD and run the Command Prompt and typed in
chkdsk /r C:Click to expand...

The solution worked and it allowed Windows to load up past the login screen. However, my computer would freeze -- mouse doesn't move, the display seems to have frozen -- at random times. Sometimes, it freezes 2 minutes after I login. Sometimes, it goes on for 8 hours without freezing.

What I noticed today is that right before my laptop freezes, the computer would click a few times then be silent. I was probably unable to hear the ticking because I am used to having a cooler beneath the laptop. I tried running chkdsk /r C: again, but this time, I have rows and rows of file record ######## segment is unreadable.

I am guessing that Dell gave me a very lame hard drive. If it is indeed a hard drive failure, would the aforementioned problems be results or symptoms of a failing hard drive? I would really appreciate a second opinion before I go out and buy a new hard drive. Is there any other way to check / diagnose the problem?

My laptop's "port replicator" has a bunch of usb ports and I also think it has the power source for a dvd or hard drive. So basically I am looking for suggestions of manufacturers of enclosures and/or cables that will allow me to connect ide/sata/ata (I realize they are different connections, thus i will have to buy different cables) to a USB port.

of if they are a dime a dozen and the quality is equal between different manufacturers, that would be helpful to know too.

I have a friend whos computer was acting weird. It's older, so the local shop wouldn't look at it for her. she said she couldn't get it to say ON. I told her I would look at it, (but I know next to nothing)
when I started it up the first few times, the only thing odd I noticed is the background was blood red with a butcher knife on it. Just weird for her. I didn't try to get online.

I called her to ask if the background was normal, and exactly the problem she was experiencing was. she said the background wastn' normal, and that when she got online, it would restart her computer.

Thinking I had the answer, (virus) I headed down with my Norton in hand. I started up the computer as I have a few times before, but this time it didn't even recognize the hard drive.. checked for it.. then said.. "master NONE"..

I opened it up, checked all the cables and tried again.. nothing. I tried to put one of my old harddrives in, and it did recognize mine..

my question is.. would a virus have killed this harddrive.. and is that what it probably is? is there any way of getting the data back off? I have an old hard drive here, but I had used it as a back up for my digital pictures... there isnt' a OS loaded on it. so it won't start up the system either.

I just dont' know if i should cut my losses or keep trying.

thanks for any advice!!

I have a Yakumo external USB harddrive. I used it on my WinXP system until the internal harddrive for that computer died recently. I've just done a fresh WinXP install on a new internal HD, but when I plug in the USB HD, I could not read the drive at all.

The USB HD is in NTFS, and I might have set some access restrictions, but when I try to access the USB HD from the new WinXP, there is no user/pwd prompt for the access. When I click on the drive, it simply says "Access Denied". Also, the drive label does not show up properly, either; it simply reads "Local Drive (E:)". Under the properties, it says that the drive is in RAW format. However I can see the drive and its label in the disk management tool in admin tools.

I'm sure the USB HD itself is not damaged, though, since I can still access all of the files on it from my Mac.

Please help me solve this problem, TIA.

Ok, I have an HP notebook that is about three years old. It has no screen (accident) so I have it hooked up to a CRTT and used it as a desktop replacement. I turned it on the other day and it boots to a blue screen that says:

Boot from:

I tried clicking on HARDRIVE and it rebooted to the same screen. I tried rebooting with my winXP CD and it booted to the same screen. My roommate started into the BIOS (I think is what he called it) and said it looks like the HD is not recognized in the BIOS. After he rebooted it to the BIOS (?) he tried to reboot into safemode, but now I cannot get the CRT to recognize it is plugged to the notebook. I turn on the notebook, then I turn on the monitor. The light on the monitor is green then turns orange and no screen. By the way, the monitor is also an HP from the same year as the notebook. I tried using the function key and correspoding F key for switching the screen and nothing happens.

Any ideas? I don't care if I loose anything on this notebook, it is just for my sons kid game, but he sure would like to play and I get the darn notebook to come on. Thanks in advance for any help.

My new computer has 4 scsi hard drives, a floppy drive, and a cd drive. There is nothing on the hard drives so I have to boot from either floppy or cd. When I try to boot something that needs to install something its like c:\ not found enter path, but there is no path. In dos a:\ is the floppy and r:\ is the cd drive, but again the hard drives are missing. I figured that it was something with needed drivers so I went to the manufacturer of the motherboards website and downloaded a drivers package. When running it on the comp it won't run because it says it needs to extract itself to the harddrive. The motherboard is a DBS100 31330A if that helps. How can I get these drives recognized in DOS? This might help. Thanks for any help!

Dear all,
I am trying to configure on the internet the Asus NX90JQ I am planning to buy.
I can choose a primary & secondary Hard Drives from the following:
640GB 5400rpm 2.5-inch 9.5mm HDD S-ATA
500GB 7200rpm SATA II : $59
750GB 5400rpm SATA II : $139
320GB Seagate XT 7200rpm Hybrid Drive 32MB Cache SATA II : $105
500GB Seagate XT 7200rpm Hybrid Drive 32MB Cache SATA II : $135
80GB G2 Intel X25-M Multi-Cell SSD Serial-ATA II: $219
160GB G2 Intel X25-M Multi-Cell SSD Serial-ATA II: $449
128GB Crucial C300 Solid State Drive SATA III : $299
256GB Crucial C300 Solid State Drive SATA III : $629

Need your advise on that, I prefer to go for the storage capacity by opting for the 750GB on both.
Or is the 7200 rpm really better than the 5400rpm??

Thanks for your feedback

Answer:Solved: Advise for Harddrive

Hey there, The rpm of the drive is how fast the disk spins. A faster spinning disk will give better performance but will lower battery life and possibly get warmer. (Although the heat shouldn't be a problem as the laptop should be built to cope with the temps of a 7200 drive if they are selling laptops with them in) I reacon that the best drive there as an all rounder would be the;

500GB Seagate XT 7200rpm Hybrid Drive 32MB Cache SATA II : $135

It has the 7200rpm speed, 32mb cache (which is good) and if I am not mistaken they also have a few GB of solid state hard drive which is very fast indeed.

Here's the situation, I hope someone can help!

Friend A's computer died, but he doesn't care because its old and he has a laptop. However, he wants to salvage his secondary drive. Its a 1tb sata drive, and unfortunately, I don't know much more than that about it.

Friend B said that he wants me to put the hard drive as a secondary drive in his computer. I put it in his computer, and of course it didn't recognize it. I tried to get into the bios to see what I could do, but Friend B's computer is home built, so the tower's splash screen comes up and it doesn't tell you what key to press for setup. I've already tried the basics F1, F2 and F10.

Friend A had an older computer that was running XP

Friend B is running Windows 7.

That's all the info I have on their computers offhand. Please let me know what more info is needed. Thank you for any help!

HI! sorry about the previous post . System microsoft windows xp professional, version 2002 sevice pack 2, 38 gb harddrive . My problem is i dont seem to be able to erase viideos, music , or programs from my computer. I have a 38 gb internal harddrive which was full so i bought a portable hardrive 250 gb. I transfered all my videos , music and computer game onto my portable hardrive i estimate about 15 gb. I then erased all videos , music an computer games from my c drive. I dont think i have many programs on my computer just. windows xp ,adobe, microsoft word, excell, mcaffe , outlook express, think thats about it. After erasing all music , videos, computer games from my c drive. I went to my computer to check how much space i had freed up. It said 3gb which is crazy! I went on line and downloaded a windows shampoo program . I then ran it freed up about a gb. I have used disk clean up and tried to defragment my c drive . I couldnt do this as it says i need at least 25% free space for this to work. If i go to my media player all the music i have erased seems to be listed in faint wrtting.About 5gb if i try to play any track it wont work. So i believe this music is not on my computer but is still taking up space. I bought my computer 2nd hand a few years ago so dont have any original instalation cds. So i cant totaly erase the hardrive and start from scratch. At the start of the week i had about 3gb free space. All ive done this week is check emails and watch some videos on ytu... Read more

I have a 1.5TB Seagate internal harddrive I use for data storage, and I've had problems with it before.

A few days ago, I noticed that my data drive was not showing up in Windows. Since then, my computer would take quite a while to boot into Windows, sometimes hanging on the mobo splash screen. I ran SeaTools for DOS on it. Before even checking sectors, it told me the drive had failed. I took it out, backed up my stuff on my girlfriend's external using my external case, and have had it out since. Every time I would plug it in through USB, I'd get the "Windows found errors, do you want to fix?" message, and I eventually ran that which took about 20 hours. I ran SeaTools for Windows after doing that Windows thing, and it says the drive passed.

I no longer get the error prompt when I plug it in, and the SeaTools for Windows passed so I'm hoping it might be okay and I can put it back inside my tower. However, if I have it running when I'm starting up the computer, it still hangs at the mobo splash screen. I want to run SeaTools for DOS on it, but it won't detect it (I power it up after passing the mobo splash). I'm just worried it'll just hang every time I start up.

Does it sound like I'm S.O.L.?

Unfortunately the screen was cracked and I am unable to find replacement parts because the laptop is so old, but I would really like to connect the laptop to one of my machines so that I can see what he was typing at the end of his life. Is there a way to connect a laptop harddrive to a desktop? I noticed that its ide, so if there are any cables I can buy peoples post! Thank you for anyone's help in advance.

Answer:Solved: Old Laptop Harddrive

Get one of these. Just connect the IDE portion to the hard drive and the USB to your desktop or notebook.

Just make sure that the one you buy has the connections for a 2.5" drive. I think most of them have both a 2.5/3,5" IDE connections, I know mine does, but you will need to verify.

Hey all,
I want to get opinions on whether I'm looking at a harddrive failure situation or not.

I've been having what I originally thought was virus issues based on the fact that my system seemed to slow more and more as I used it. It was almost as though some unseen (not visible in Process Explorer or Windows TaskManager) program was attempting to do something that caused my system to stall for up to 25 seconds after every 10 seconds or so.

I ran SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot S&D, Layasoft AdAware, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and finally ComboFix which finally yielded some satisfying results. I now see only 5 second stalls after maybe a minute of use each time.

So it's a software problem, right? Not so fast! I also attempted to boot into Safe Mode a couple of times during my scans and was frozen up after the initial loading of the .SYS files. Rebooting caused Windows to do some sort of check on its "security file system integrity" or something close to that. I was able to boot back into Safe Mode and standard mode for WindowsXP after that but I felt it wiser to attempt a CHKDSK scan which I couldn't get to run from Recovery Console which kept hanging on me. This gave me:
Windows will now check the disk.
Cleaning up 1 unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 1 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 1 unused security descriptors.

So I recently had issues with a past HDD, couldn't seem to repair it and bought a new one. The first time I plugged it in, I got a Primary Disk Error.

I attempted to install windows, got a black screen after it restarted. Formatted it and attempted again, still met with a black screen.

Well, now I'm having the same issue that I had on my previous hard drive..It picks it up in the SATA port, however it's not under the bootable drives and I can't seem to load the drive in any diagnostic or the windows installation.

I've changed the SATA data cables, I changed ports and it still picked up CDROM in both..What could be the problem? Please just don't answer "HDD is dead, buy a new one" as that's what I've already done.

I just bought a 2.5" usb hard drive. It consists of a Western Digital 120Gb (WD1200BEVS) drive and a USB adapter. I managed to get it to work on my notebook (Asus Eee 701) reasonably wel. However, when I attempted to transfer it to my desktop, something strange happens. When I plug it in, the load hardware wizard comes up, then shuts down, then starts up again and again, over and over. It never lets me configure it.

My feeling is, that there is a clash of drives. My desktop has two hard drives in it, a WD 80Gb and another (not sure of the brand) of 120Gb. The 80 Gb is drive C: and the 120Gb is drive D:. It was my understanding that the system assigned a drive letter to USB devices at connect time. Is it starting as drive C: because the driver is not yet loaded? Will this problem clear up if I manage to get the driver loaded? If it is, then maybe a bootdisk might work? Any ideas?
