Solved: Seagate Replica 250gb

Question: Solved: Seagate Replica 250gb

I looked at this unit and it appears to me that it would be ideal for my laptop. I need about 120gb for backup of my C & D drives. I'm not sure if this unit is the best and find no place to compare it to other comparable products on the market.

If anyone has used this product I would ask your opinion of its performance and one other question. How long does it take for the first download of all files.

Preferred Solution: Solved: Seagate Replica 250gb

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:Seagate Replica 250gb with W7

If your only use is for disaster recovery, then this drive will do the job...That being said, I would recommend the purchase a large external drive that can also be used for storing individual files/folders...

I have a Seagate Replica 250gb external Hard Drive, and all the sudden a strange problem has arose. I keep my Itunes library on the Seagate so my computer hard drive wont fill up completely, and it has always worked fine for the six months I've used it for this. Anyway all the sudden today when I plugged my Seagate Replica into the USB Interface port to load some more music into my library, it wouldn't connect and when it finally did it said drive E (the seagate hard drive) needed to be formatted to work with my computer. This is strange because it's worked fine for months and now all the sudden it gives me this message. The biggest problem however regarding this issue is that in order to re format my seagate replica is that everything on it has to be erased, which includes school documents as well as my music. Does anyone know why this problem would suddenly occur, or have any suggestions? I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks

Answer:Seagate Replica needs to be formatted?

Absolutely not!   Do not, for any reason, format that drive. This is a false message that Windows gives when something is wrong with the USB interface for a mass storage device.I is difficult from here to know exactly what happened. But this is a problem that other people have reported many times over and over. There just is something about the USB system and external drives that just does not seem to work right. Is this on a laptop? If so, go find a friend that has a desktop PC and figure out some way to hook the external drive into the desktop. But do not use the USB adapter. Instead, find some way to hook that drive directly into the desktop. Most likely the drive is perfectly all right and all your data is still there. By the way, is this thing still under warranty? If so, you need to contact the manufacturer of the enclosure. Was this an all-in-one enclosure? I mean to say was the device and the drive purchased as a single unit from a vendor? Is it as Seagate product? I mean is the entire package got a Seagate brand on it? Seagate is very good about standing behind their products. But that may not be the case for enclosures that are made and packaged by others.

I just purchased a Seagate Go Flex 2TB external drive for backups. It comes with software called Replica(v.5). I have been reluctant to use it due to reports (seen post purchase) that it causes system crashes especially with right click and that it slows system performance terribly. I have a new win 7 pro 64 bit (OEM legal) DIY build system. Anyone using Replica? Thanks

Answer:Seagate Replica backup restore

Never heard of it, but it may be a Seagate Edition of an Acronis product. I know Seagate makes some Acronis products available to Seagate drive purchasers.

I generally would be suspicious of it, particularly when free and known good alternatives are available. I have seen numerous complaints about the software included with external backup drives, admittedly not "Replica".

I run a Seagate Replica 250gb on an XP machine. The automated backup runs quietly in the background and does a full system backup as expected. The product is supposed to be Never Full in that as disk space is used, the older files are overwritten. However, todays backup has failed as due to lack of space on the external drive. How do I free up space? Why is this so called Never Full device full? Any help grately appreciated. PS - I have posted a question with Seagate Tech Support without response to date.

Answer:Seagate Replica - Never Full yet out of space?

The never full, as you suggest it automatically is deleting older files as goes.So does the Seagate site give you the opportunity ro download firmwear update perhaps /maybe?

Anyone use the Seagate Replica software that comes with the 2T External Hardrive? This is the GoFlex Desk series of external harddrives.

The software does an automatic backup of all your computers harddrives and logical drives and backs up any changes periodically to the external hardrive. It is suppose to allow full recovery (it includes a boot disk, linux based for restoring from the backed up 'image').

Anyone use it, and does it successfully restore the 'image' in case of a full crash?

Why bother using third-party disk-imaging (especially from Seagate) when Windows 7 has it built-in?

Hi, Does anyone have any experience of this USB External hard drive? I think my Western Digital 'My Book' is going to pack up soon, so need to find a replacement. Yesterday i asked about a Buffalo drive and got some positive responses, but this one looks good too (and tiny in size). Thanks - Tony

I use a Buffalo drive however, and it's extremely reliable - the only irritation is the incessant humming noise the drive motor makes.

Hey there,

I recently picked up a Seagate 250 GB SATA HDD (model number: ST3250824AS). When I installed it, I did as I was exactly told. I disconnected the power and turned of the system, plugged the SATA cable from the HDD to the motherboard (I have an ASUS P4P800 motherboard), hooked up the power cable from the power supply to the HDD and closed the case up. When I powered up the system, Windows (I'm using XP Professional) recognized the HDD and added it to the device manager... but the problem is; its there is no icon displayed in My Computer. I dont know what to make of it. Could it be something with Windows? Any feed back would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:Seagate 250GB USB External Drive

You can get a 1TB external hd for $75. Why limit yourself. You can store an image of your hd, as well as back it up. Will the 250GB be ok? Yes. But go ahead and get the larger drive.

HELP!!!! I have a Seagate FreeAgent Desktop External 250GB USB Drive. All was working wonderfully and then after I upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 2 I can no longer access my drive. I can see it in the tab to safely remove the hardware. I can see it in the device manager under hard drive, and it tells me it is working fine. When I go out to disk management, it shows the drive as Disk 5 and online, but all of the space is unallocated. I have data on the drive and I am not sure if the upgrade to SP SVC PK 2 caused the error. I found that there might be a hotfix, but I can not seem to find the right one. I am thinking it is KB885464. I can not find the hotfix to save my life and I am at a loss as to how to access my drive. I am mandated to have Svc Pack 2 loaded due to the fact it is a gov't machine. Please help.

alright everyone! let me give the lowdown on the goings on.
Basically, my pc has died on me, but luckily i have a laptop. I cant afford a new pc yet, so i bought a hard drive usb caddy thing. it works a treat with my dvd writer, and with my other hard drive (200 gig Western Digital one, with partitions and windows on the drive), but this seagate one is being a bit more of a pain. the usb drive itself can handle upto 500 gig, and i have a usb 2.0 connection (so theres no compatibilty problems, and it works with the 200fine) also, i tried to put the hard drive in another pc as slave and it found it, but didnt bring it up in windows/my computer. its the same problem on my laptop, my usb caddy finds the drive, and the name, and says its connected, but doesent bring the drive up in any explorer windows etc...
im a bit worried now that the drive might be dead (i have LOADS of data on there that i really need 2 get my mitts on). when i go into hard drive management, the drive is found but has a yellow exclimation point next to it.
i was thinking it might need checkdisc being run on it, but i dont think it will find the drive when windows nexts boots up with it being a usb drive. im thinking of perhaps using knoppix to get into the drive to see if the data is still there etc... (but ive not used knoppix for well over a year and ive pretty much forgotten how to use it lol).
so any help would be greatly appreciated, i know it might be a strange error (or it might be common for all... Read more

Hi folks, I bought ThinkPad R61 3 years ago and it has been working perfectly. Last week however I dropped it down and as a result the original HDD is damaged. So I have bought new hard drive - SEAGATE 250GB SATA2/8MB 9.5mm and it turned out that I cannot install Windows XP (neither SP2 nor SP3) on it.The message from the Windows setup is: ?Setup did not find any hard disk drive installed in your computer.? Well, of course before the installation I have partitioned the hard drive (with Partition Magic) ? I have created primary drive, activated it, then I have formatted it.I tried everything I could think of but the result is the same ? Windows XP setup does not recognize the hard drive :-(Unfortunately I do not have recovery disks. Can anybody help me with advice how to get rid of this situation and install the Windows XP on the new SEAGATE drive? Thanks and best regards,Lyubomir

I'd like to upgrade my current HD to the Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive. My computer is 7 years old this June, so I'm curious about whether it's compatible or not. My current HD's specs are located here:

Specifically: Embedded Controller Interface: (40 pin) EIDE
Physical Dimensions (H x W x D): 1" x 5.78" x 4"

I have the most recent BIOS update for my computer which was released in 2002. I run XP SP2, PIII 735 MHz, 256 Megs RAM. Do you think this upgrade would work or would I just need to toss the idea and get a new computer?

Also, the HD's specs are located here:

Thanks so much,

Answer:Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive

The 7200 hard drive wil give better data transfer, but on your system, p111, 735mhz, increasing your ram would help, I would say, more.
XP runs better with more memory.
Upgrading to a later cpu, and motherboard, would give your old pc, a new lease of life.

I bought a Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 250GB drive for a friend a few days ago. I was able to get it connected to a machine running Windows XP SP2 just fine and I could see the drive ok. I noticed about 18GB or so was "used" even though there was only one 73MB PDF file visible when I viewed the drive contents. The drive has 232GB of free space, I believe.

I understand not all 250GB will be available for user data but is it reasonable for 18GB to be consumed by filesystem info?

I've been getting this "Windows - Delayed Write Failed" error for quite some time. It's strange though, because it seems to be happening totally randomly.

Here's what happens:

I could be using firefox 2 mins after I start up my computer or be playing a game 4 hours after I start my computer and then a delayed write failed error (or several) suddenly appears from the taskbar in the lower right corner of the screen, failing to write either a system file of some sort or a file related to whatever program I happen to be using at the time. Then everything becomes extremely choppy and eventually totally freezes up. I then have to manually restart at which point it will either work normally or be slow and then freeze up during startup. For some reason, moving my HDs to different SATA ports (since my mobo has 4 ports) tends to fix the problem for a while before it starts happening again.

Does anyone happen to have any idea how to resolve this problem or what is causing it? Is my HD failing, does it have to do with my drivers/firmware/bios, or is it some sort of software bug or conflict?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

(btw there don't seem to be any problems with the disk when I check it with chkdsk or the seagate disk checking utility)

I have a problem with a local replica of my Lotus Notes Mailfile. When I try to move new mail from my Inbox to another folder it does not appear in the folder view. The message is still visible in the "All Documents" view and I can drag it back into the inbox from there. I also seem to have some messages with a future date as their date of reciept. I think my local mailfile is corrupted but I don't know how to fix it. Someone suggested I remove the cache.dsk file and then log back in to Lotus Notes but this hasn't helped. Can anyone suggest anything?

Answer:Solved: Lotus Notes Mailfile Local Replica corrupt

We use Lotus Notes here at work as well. I would suggest, if you can see the server copy of your mail file to see if the email shows in the other folder when you move it. If everything works correctly on the server copy of your email, can you delete the local copy and recreate it?

Answer:Solved: Mounting 250gb harddrive

Do you have an xp disk with sp1? If your xp disk is an original xp [without sp1] you will need to either slipstream sp1 to see the full size on install or install with your disk and update to sp1 or sp2. After the update, you will see the rest of the drive as unallocated in disk management. You can create another partition in the unallocated space or use a third party app like partition magic to expand your existing partition into the unallocated space.

BTW if the mb ids the drives correctly with the correct size, you should not need a controller card.

Hey guys,

I have a home made computer, System is running off a 250gb hard drive. When I first formatted it, it was showing 232gb (this was ages ago) but somewhere along the way it has changed to 184gb. If I open disk management it shows the drive cannot be extended to fill the space, and even shows that 184gb is the maximum that can be used. However when I use diskpart to look at it in command prompt it shows 232gb as the size of the drive. I have tried extend in diskpart, but it does not let me fix the problem.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1.

Would love any help that anyone can give me!

Answer:[SOLVED] 250gb (232gb formatted) drive showing as 184gb?

Welcome MrMatt90.

Does your system only have one hard drive?

Is the drive you mention the one with your Operating System installed on?

Have you created any backups?

Are there any partitions?

When was the last time you ran chkdsk? I suggest you run it on your drive...
> - Click the start globe/button
> - type cmd and run cmd.exe as administrator
> - type chkdsk /r ?: (replacing the ?: with the drive letter, probably c:)
> - it will ask to run scan on next restart, type Y and restart.

Hi there

I've recently come into a handful of old 2.5" hard drives from the upgrade of some EPOS systems. Most of the drives work fine, but two of them, both 250gb nominal capacity (a Hitachi HTE543225A7A384, and a TOSHIBA MK2576GSXZ) both show up as 111gb in Windows (7 Ultimate 64-bit).

PassMark DiskCheckup (under the Hidden Areas - HPA/DCO tab) shows that the Max User LBA for these drives is set to about half that of the Max Native LBA and the Max Disk LBA which would explain the discrepancy. However; when I try and use the "Modify HPA/DCO" option to reset the Max User LBA to the Max Native LBA it just comes up with "Error setting new Max User LBA".

Anybody got any ideas or know of a tool that might help?

My configuration is as follows:

These servers are running Server 2008 R2

1 main WSUS server
2 replica servers that syncronize from the main server using an SSL connection.

Is there a way for the client computers to connect to the replica servers via SSL or is this pointless?

I don't see anywhere to set it up on the replica servers like there is on the main server. The replica servers did not setup a web page under IIS 7 like the main WSUS server did.

Is this normal or did the replica servers just not configure properly when I used the wizard?

Doing a google search and reading multiple MSDN articles really didn't help at all. I didn't see anything specific about clients connecting via SSL to replica servers.

Hello. I currently have Windows XP installed w/ McAfee Total protection / wireless network, the works. I'm usually good, however, I currently know that I have to have some kind of virus that McAfee isn't picking up this time. In my task bar you can see McAfee scanning emails. However, I am not sending any emails. My outlook isn't even open. Occassionly a message comes up & says "message cannot be sent" & I can view the McAfee log. All the messages seem to have the same subject: "The Best Replica".

If I try & hit <Ctrl> + <Alt> + <Del>, my task manager is grayed out.

It just looks like I'm sending 100's of emails. My name or email do not seem to be associated with any of them. The McAfee email scanning is really really slowing down my computer because it is scanning so many emails.

Also, if you look in my outlook sent box, they are not listed there either.

How do I stop this???? It has to be a virus!

I'm trying to setup a WSUS server in our new location in California. I have the server setup and have it configuerd to pull updates, polices, and etc from my main site in Iowa. From the error I'm getting it would appear that it's because of the 2 hour time difference between Iowa and California that is causing the master / replica servers to not replicate information to each other.

Does anybody have an idea of how to get around this time difference issue?

Answer:WSUS Master / Replica Setup

Sync the time on both servers with a local NTP source, a free server listed on, or something else appropriate that way the servers are in sync but only the timezone offset differs. Normally this doesn't bother apps since the sync is based on UTM time not the displayed time.

If it still doesn't work you'll have to trick it with the timezone settings unless you can find a KB article on M$ addressing the issue.

Yes you can but none of those products offer a decent defragging method and defragging is not really required that much either.

I guess this is where I should ask my question..I had to do a re-install of Windows 7 64 bit and it is working great now. But I discovered my Seagate external hard drive wasn't backing up so I re-formatted it, uninstalled the software, disconnected the unit and was going to re-install it. BUT I can not get rid of the My Replica icon in the My Computer/Other folder. I have contacted Seagate twice with no satisfaction. They told me to right click and delete it and reboot. Of course, I had tried that numerous times. You can't drag it to the recycle bin, I have checked and there is no Seagate/My Replica, etc. under Programs. The right click choices are Open/Open in New Window and Create Shortcut.

I am not going to re-connect the unit and install the software until the icon is gone. Does anyone have an answer to how I can get rid of this icon?

If I can't delete the icon the Seagate unit is going to be returned...unhappily.

Well it really depends on the site. Personally I would be skeptical about a lot of sites out there. If you make any purchases make sure that you are using a credit card, not a debit card for security reasons.

A lot of manufacturer's also have replacement monitors for a reasonable price - what model laptop are you using?

How do I go about making an exact replica of my hard drive in real time so that, in the event of a hard drive crash, all I need to do is simply to replace the crashed hard drive with the replica? Is this ever possible?

Answer:How do I make a replica of my hard drive in real time?

Many here prefer Acronis True Image (ATI). Have a look via Google. I prefer to partition my hard drive into C: - for all system and program files and (in my case) F: where I keep all my self generated data, under a folder "My Documents" with the usual sub folders for Word, Photos, Music etc. I find it easier to make frequent mirror images of this folder (daily) using Freefilesynch, set to make a copy of the "left" folder (on F drive) to the "right" folder on the second drive. This is far quicker than ATI, but it does not work for system and program files, so I make an ATI image of my C drive about every week on an external drive. ATI would work on a non partitioned drive but it is far more cumbersome. W7has its own backup system if you have it, but I found it too long winded

I have a WSUS server that I'm going to be pushing Windows 1703 upgrades probably within the next few weeks.
We have hundreds of computers to upgrade, and 20 locations (downstream servers). However, when I go look at the downstream servers, it shows that upgrades aren't being downloaded, and it's grayed out due to being a replica server.
Is there any way for me to make the downstream servers proper replicas, and allow the upgrades and other things I approve to be pushed by the downstream servers? Doing drivers would be nice as well should we look at enabling that feature.

Recently dropped my Asus T100 on the floor and it needs replacing. On the windows store on it I have MS office (don't know which version). Will this work on a separate machine if I sign in to the store with the same account?

Answer:Do apps that your purchased on the windows store work on replica devices?

Well. Depending on the Office license you have you can install it on n machines.
You can check it here if you have a office license:
Normal apps can simply be redownloaded via the store or might - depending on your settings - be downloaded automatically as soon as you connect with your Microsoft account

Hi, trying to reformat a laptop and a re-install Windows XP. Answer:Using Seagate Starter Disc on Non-Seagate drive,

Might not be a good idea, as all it does is little more than FDISK or Windows XP Setup. Yes, Windows XP Setup. Simply pop the CD in the drive, restart the laptop (to boot from the CD) and it will give you a screen allowing you to choose your partitions and filing systems. For safety, use NTFS file systems. When you press the Continue key (F9 I think), it will then re-partition and format your drives for you!Howzat?

Lately I have been looking 'round for a new hard disk drive (HDD) for work, and Seeing as I require a fair bit of space, I did some research on the higher capacity HDDs and have decided to go with a Seagate Barracuda ES series HDD.

Product Page: Seagate Barracuda ES Hard Drives

Basically, I have to decide between the 500GB (ST3500630NS) and the 750GB (ST3750640NS) drives. The main consideration that I have had is the fact that a 750GB drive will cause a greater loss in data - as opposed to a 500GB HDD - if I'm not prepared when the drive dies.

- What is a HDDs average life span?
- Is it obvious when a HDD is nearing its life's end?

So, can anyone please assist me in finalising this decision? Any help is much appreciated.

Answer:Solved: Seagate HDD Decision

A hard disk can die within 10 minutes of installing it or is can run for years. Many times you'll get S.M.A.R.T. errors if your system monitors them. OTOH, a disk can also fail without any warning. FWIW, I've personally seen both scenarios here. If you're talking about one hard disk and your data, does the average lifespan have any real meaning? Regardless of the "average" reliability, there is one universal truth:

Remember: Data you don't have at least two copies of is data you don't care about.

My tape backup finally gave up the ghost and I decided to put in a hard disk for backup which is fast, cheaper and more reliable. It's an older Gateway that I had Win 98 on and installed XP home ed. on. It's got a western digital drive in it and I just purchased a Seagate ST340014A IDE to mount for my backups. I was surprised to find that slave must have been removed from politically correct language because with the jumpers I can set it as Master, Cable select, or limit the drive to 36GB. No jumper combination for slave is even mentioned. Iv'e been at this for 5 hours now and figure it's time for my bowing to the team for the right answer. Never been let down yet! I started selecting Cable select because I really don't know when you use this and it was the farthest from master and limiting size whitch I do understand. That caused the computer to come up with NO OPERATING SYSTEM FOUND error. I removed my WD and set the Seagate to master and installed XP again on this drive. Went back to older setting and same message. Booted from install disk and went into Bios and it showed both drives. I have boot set up as first CD then Zip then hard disk. My understanding was if it didn't find what was required to boot on first HD it would auto to 2nd and use that if necessary. Still no go. Strangely when I went to install disk for Repair instead of Install my drives had been renamed and the was no D: drive. My zip was now C: my WD drive was D: and no other H... Read more

So, have one of these Seagate NAS devices
2 x 2TB harddrives ( RAID 1 )
also has a hotswappable sata drive I can insert to do "one touch backups" from the RAID to this drive
there is also a USB 3.0 drive that can be used

is there anyway to get on this device and copy the data from one drive to the other faster than doing it from
web interface or through windows / share
the copy process NEVER exceeds 10MB/s which is rather pathetic since the hard drives are physically installed on same device
must be a better way to copy from drive to drive tthan going through a computer / and networking ?

anyone have any ideas or suggestions
seems pointless to have a back up NAS solution that is slower than dirt
why have sata plug in or USB3.0 if it can only get upto 10MB/sec

Hello, so unfortunately I turned on my computer this morning only to find out my 4TB Seagate HD (internal) must have crashed or got corrupted because I could no longer see it in my computer and when I open it in disk management i get prompted to initialize the drive. I should only get that message if it was a brand new, barebone drive (which its not as i've had it for several months now). Obviously I am left with two options - either initialize it as MBR or GPT and since its 4TB I chosed GPT.

Now the most puzzling thing is that in disk management it shows it having 1.6 TB free space; even though I created it as one partition and assigned it a different drive letter. My guess is that possibly the other 2 TB was my old data but I can't view it in disk management. I've gone through reformatting the drive and even went through the route of diskpart in cmd ... (which also shows it as 1.6 TB).

Is it possible that it is holding my old data hostage ? And if so how would I go about completely clearing out the hard drive? Just to note I ran a disk check and surprisingly came up with no bad sectors or errors... any feedback is appreciated as I am pretty lost on this one. Also a similar issue happened a few months prior with all the data on the drive being wiped one morning I booted up but it retained the drive format / letter. I also did a disk check after that incident with no issues since then.

Hi guys,

I got a 2 TB seagate hdd, bought about half a year ago.
Sometimes when browsing the web using firefox and using utorrent it emits a short loud beep and everythings seems to freeze for a split second (?) I'm guessing this is due to a lot of write actions.
I'm guessing it's either the hdd itself that's making the sound or my motherboard.

Crystaldiskinfo shows everything's fine.
However, should I be worried?

Folks I am at my wits end with the 2nd seagate 120 gigabyte HDD I have had today.

I want this drive to be my system drive and my 80 gig WD to be the slave. The first drive had a clicking sound in it, brand new and the click of death. I took it back and got it replaced.

The second drive is seen by windows, smart status is fantastic, and it passes seagates diagnostics. I have done quite a few things to try to keep this post from happening. I tried copying the drive with seagates disk wizard, shutting down and switching the seagate to master and the WD to slave. I have tried setting both drives to cable select. I have switched cables thinking maybe I have a bad cable. Nothing.

I have even tried unplugging the WD and installing windows on the seagate. The installation starts and goes to the first boot sequence where windows would actually be installed. Instead of windows being installed the whole process starts over even though I have boot from CD as the third option in the bios. I have tried removing the CD to try to get it to boot and ask for it. I get an invalid boot and it asks for the freaking windows disk.

This is a never ending cycle. I can store files on the disk when the WD is the system disk. The drive is fast but it just is in a hating mood.

I think I have covered what I have tried, but I have tried so many things I might have left something out. Man, I think the drive just hates me. Any ideas? I might have overlooked the obvious. I wouldn't doubt it becau... Read more

Hi Everyone,

I have just found a solution to the problem I was having and thought I would share it in case it helps anyone else.

I bought a Seagate Freeagent Desk 1TB about a year ago and it has worked fine until recently. Now when I plug it in it takes about 3 or 4 minutes for it to register on the computer, and autoplay pops up. When I started copying things to or from the drive, it worked for about 1 minute and then froze. Canceling the operation caused a crash on the system and when it had recovered, the drive was no longer accessible. I ran checkdisk which failed after a minute and the same problem - mini crash and drive no longer accessible. When I unplug the drive and plug back in, the drive is recognised once again. In short, anything you do works for 1 minute and then fails.

Eventually, i decided to open it up and remove the actual hard drive from the casing. I connected it to a desktop pc, and it simply would not boot up with the drive in. I had to disable smart check first and then cancel checkdisk when it started. Once I got booted into windows, the drive was visible but would disappear after a minute of activity. I tried recovery software which also failed after 1 minute. Finally, I have just succeeded copying everything off it by removing the hard drive from its casing along with circuitry which plugs into the back of the actual HD, acting as a usb port converter. I put the hard drive on a laptop cooling tray whilst making sure none of the circuitry came int... Read more

TigerDirect offered a 3.5 inch Seagate 250GB hard drive and an ULTRA USB enclosure at a pretty good price, and I bought them to make an external hard drive. The Seagate drive came with absolutely nothing but the static-resistant envelope. The Ultra enclosure came with a 'User Manual' that added up to 'open the box, put in the drive, close the box'. There were some drawings of the enclosure, but none that showed any connections or cables. The manual said nothing at all about jumper settings or how to connect the cables. I e-mailed the Ultra 'support' and asked for additional information.
The response was "Unforunately thats al the instruction s that we have.- Miguel"(sic).
At Seagate, I was told:

Due to special requirements and characteristics of these enclosures Seagate is not able to assist in troubleshooting issues with these devices, for troubleshooting in this special environment contacting the enclosure manufacturer is recommended."

Under Device Manager, I can see the unit listed as Disk drives -> ST332062 OAS USB Drive.

It is also recognized under the Safely Remove Hardware console as a USB Mass Storage Device.

However my system won't acknowledge the drive. I've tried browsing to it using different drive designations i.e. e:/ to no avail.

Anyone ever run into this with an external drive ??

I'm going to buy a 250gb external drive this week to back up my hard drive. I'm using my bestbuy card, and seagate and western digital are the brands they carry.

I tried to find customer reviews on the web of the two manufacturers and couldn't really find a consensus on which is more reliable and less prone to malfunction. I would appreciate any input some of you experts have had with these two drives.

I have a %title% hdd in my comp, and according to several reviews seagate has configured it to have a default 1.5gb/sec jumper.

1. How do I check what I have?
2. How do I change to 3gb/sec?

Answer:Solved: Seagate Barracuda 1TB jumper

Take off a jumper from a place like this, if there is a jumper:
Quote: Large and fast. The first thing you have to know is the drive comes limited to 1.5 Gbits per second. By removing the jumper you allow the drive to auto-negotiate up to 3.0 Gbits per second. Google Seagate's manual ""100452348b.pdf"" and cruise to the top of page 20. All is explained in the PDF. Pull the jumper and NOW you have some serious speed !!!

I have an HP Pavilion a810n desktop PC running Win XP Home SP2. I recently purchased a Seagate 160GB external USB hard drive. Setup went fine and Windows recognizes the drive with no problem. I realized there was a problem the first time I powered the PC off. When I powered on, the PC hangs at the blue HP screen. Turning the power off and disconnecting the USB cable from the PC corrects the problem. After Windows boots up, I can plug the Seagate drive in and all is fine. The problem is two fold. First of all, it's very inconvenient to have to disconnect the drive each time I reboot. More importantly, I want to use the external drive for backups, so I need the drive to be seen at bootup in case I can't get to Windows.

I did some searching on the net and found the following post from another user having the same problem. Here is the relevant text of his post.

Ok, now the serious flaw. I have a 160 gig Seagate external USB hard drive. HP a810n computers will not boot with this and I expect, other USB hard drives attached. It locks up at the blue bios screen with the drive access lights on solid on both the HP a810n and the USB hard drive. The same USB drive works fine with 5 other computers I tried, but not with my a810n, or another a810n I tried.
After 3 weeks of working with HP support, they admit it is a bios problem and
promise to fix it within the next week. I hope they do.

I've used DiscWizard to generate an image of my 40GB HDD onto my MaxtorOne-Touch III Mini USB drive. I now want to transfer that image to a new 80 GB Seagate HDD. I've loaded Win 2K onto the new drive. Problem I have is that the "bootable" disc generated by DiscWizard doesn't boot-in fact if I browse the first disc generated there are no files on it, this despite the DW report that it had been successfully generated. I have now made a second "bootable" disc which has on it:
1 Folder-Recovery Program
In that folder:
bootmenu, bootwiz.sys. f11.cfg, kernel, mouse, ramdisk,
It does not boot.Net result of this is that I have an image I can't copy to the new HDD.
Anyone have any ideas, I've searched the knowledge base on the Seagate DiscWizard site.

Diagnostic Tool.Ok, HDD got winxp installed fine, but I always like to check the HDD when there new so I downloaded the Seagate HDD for my SATA HDD and it will go to 99% only of the Short Diagnostic test boot from floppy. My Motherboard doesn't have SATA II and the HDD is a SATA II but there are no required jumper settings required to knock it back to 150 SataSop because it will not let me test the hdd would you suspect I have a problem with the HDD ?

Answer:Seagate ST380817AS will not test with Seagate

If XP is installed fine and you can read and write to the drive then I wouldn't worry.

I had a Maxtor 320gb external drive that has a Seagate 320gb drive inside.
Last night, after having this about 40 days, my pc wouldn't recognize it.
The green light on the outside would blink intermittently but I heard no sounds from the drive.
Upon disassembling the enclosure, I found that the device seemed to get power but the drive just wasn't running.
I took the drive out and plugged it back in just for kicks.
The odd thing: when I plugged in the drive back into the 4 prong power supply cord, and slid it back into the case entirely, and turned it on, the green light wouldn't come back on.
When I unplugged the drive again from the pins and plugged the main power cable back in, the green light came back on with a constant light.
I put it all back in, plugged the main power cord in and the light wouldn't come back on while the drive was installed.
I bought another enclosure to see if it was a bug of some sort.
It wasn't.
The same thing happens with the new enclosure.

Am I looking at a fried drive since it seems to just not want to come back up at all?

When I plug the new enclosure into a USB port, the system doesn't recognize it as the drive isn't humming and the indicator light is off on the enclosure.
I talked with a couple friends and did some searching before here.
Apparently, in modern human history since the ENIAC, this has never happened before ever.

Any suggestions on how to "fix" this so I'm not looking at... Read more

Hi. I'm running XP, SP2. Windows was installed on a 160g Maxtor drive, and I also had a 300g Seagate drive (ST3300620A). I had Norton System Works (2007) with Antivirus and GoBack running. I wanted to run a full system virus scan, so I ran Live Update. After Live Update finished, it advised me to restart the machine. I attempted to restart the machine, and it seemed to hang up, so I hit the "interrupt" button. After that, Windows would not start, not even in safe mode. I reinstalled Windows, and everything seems to run normal, but the Seagate drive does not show up in "My Computer" and I cannot access it in a command window. The device manager sees it and says it is working properly. How can I regain access to it?

My PC is running very slow, so I am looking to remove unnecessary autostartup items as possible. One candidate is Seagate Disc Wizard Monitor, which appeared after installing and using the wizard. One adviser suggests that the monitor need not be running but that was dependant on circumstances not defined.
Can anyone advise re possible circumstances that would make it advisable NOT to remove the monitor from the autostart list?

Answer:Solved: Seagate Disc Wizard Monitor

You can research your startups Here

I'd say that it's safe to shut it down .. Maybe even uninstall it.

I have a Dell 630i. I recieved in the mail a CD for a firmware fix for a Seagate Barracuda firmware fix for the 750mb harddrive. Has anyone done this? Has everything gone all right? It is my sons computer and we are not very tech savey. What is the correct method for doing this upgrade? Is there a danger of ruining the drive? If everything seems to be working OK should I ignore the fix? The CD is dated April 20, 2009. Is this the latest update or should I download from the Dell site? Thank you very much for any help to can give a "nervous" parent.

Hi everyone,

I have a Seagate ST320430A 20.4 GB ultra ata drive that will spin up but is not being recognized in either of two systems. The drive came out of a pc that was dying and I just rebuilt. I thought I had copied all the files I needed off of this drive. But now have figured out that of all the things for me to forget.... I didn't get the outlook.pst file. UGGG!!!

I've called a couple of local computer shops. The conscensus is that if it spins up but isn't recognized then the controller card on the drive is probably bad. If that is the case I'm being told that there's no hope.

1. Is it true that there's no hope if the controller card is bad?

2. What are the chances of me taking this apart and replacing the controller card from an identical drive?

3. I think I've set all the jumpers correctly for the drive. I can't remember if jumpers will prevent it from being recognized in the bios. I think I've tried all of the options though...

Answer:Solved: Seagate drive not recognized in bios

yes when the controller card on a hard drive goes dead then its usually comes to a dead end, personally i have never tried to rip it open and try to replace the controller card, something you could try and do if you wanted to try it, but wouldnt get your hopes up. as far as the jumpers go it doesnt matter where you put it on the hard drive it would show up in the system somewhere you would just have some conflicts going on that would let you know that you need to redo your settings on your drives.

Most of the time when I plug in my seagate external 1tb hard drive, my computer won't find it. The external hard drive turns on and then turns itself off within a few seconds. I assume the hard drive is automatically turning itself off as if it is in sleep mode.

How can I prevent it from going in sleep mode? Will reformatting the hard drive help?

I have access to the hard drive as this problem does not occur everytime but just most of the time.

Answer:Solved: seagate external hard drive

Formatting the drive will not resolve this.

My desktop system has a 2TB WD main hard drive with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on it and 2x 3TB Samsung drives for storage.

I added a 4TB Seagate NAS drive ST4000VN000 for more storage and now the PC won't boot properly in the morning.

- On first boot in the morning Windows will load very slowly, and the 4TB drive won't show up in explorer.
- If I reboot and look in BIOS the 4TB drive is not listed as present.
- If I switch the machine off, and on again the 4TB drive will appear in BIOS, and will function normally all day, including after extended periods of the whole machine being switched off.

- I have swapped SATA cables and power leads endlessly and no improvement, and my 3 original drives continue to function normally
- The SATA ports are set to AHCI
- My mobo is a Gigabyte 990XA-UD3 Rev 3.0 with the latest BIOS loaded
- My PSU is a Hiper 580W Type-R Modular, all voltages appear to be good

I work with computers professionally, but this one has me a bit stumped. Could my new drive be faulty? Maybe its because it is an NAS drive, not desktop? Could my motherboard have a problem with 4TB drives?

SOLVED: This morning I went immediately in to BIOS instead of trying to load Windows again and noticed the +12v rail was at 10.5v, and over the next few minutes it rose to 11.8v. This explains everything for me, I guess the PSU is failing and the new drive must be extra sensitive to low voltages. I will replace the PSU and report back if it doesn't fix things.

Ive just built a 650 PC for my dad, I installed an SSD and Seagate 7200.12 SATA 3 HDD - Ive used it for a week at my house and its dead silent, ive drove it 350 miles up to scotland to give to my dad and we noticed a noise coming from it. it just seems to be fan noise but because of where it situated its reflecting off walls and audible - anyway, this was the readon I took the side off to check.. when I did I heard the Seagate making funny noises... its as if its in some sort of standby or self optimize mode... no defrag is running at all - it makes this whirr & click every 0.5 seconds and the pitch of the whirr varies slightly - ive ran seat tools and it has passed all tests and seems to operate fine.. but i never noticed it when it was in my house and now the case side is back on I can still just hear it.

can anybody explain what this noise is?

I hope its not broken from the travel up in boot of annoyed about the noise from the system too, worked fine & silent at mine and now can hear fan and the hard-drive is doing its thing too..
