Dell Inspiron 700M Ethernet Broadcom problem

Question: Dell Inspiron 700M Ethernet Broadcom problem

Help !!!

I have a dell inspiron 700M (4 yrs old) laptop. I recently reinstalled the OS from the secret partition that dell provides. It was supposed to be restored to factory default. However the NIC which is onboard did not get configured. I believe its "Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller". The Wireless 'Intel Pro 220BG Wireless" works fine.

I have tried all the drivers from Dell website but have not been able to fix it. In the device manager it appears as "Network and Computing Encryption/Decryption Controller".

I have seen other posts very similar to mine but have not been able to find the right solution.

Please help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,
I have a Dell Inspiron 700m. I can't find a video (graphic) driver for it. I went to Dell support website but can't find the right driver. I understand Dell doesn't support this model for Vista or Win7. I even google for the driver. Quite a few people have the same problem. Do you happen to know a driver to take its place? I went to Device Manager and it shows that I'm missing the Video Controller. Thanks for all your help.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 700m driver

Please go to device manager>video controller/adapter>properties>details tab>drop down menu> hardware id.

Copy and paste the hardware id and we can do a search for one.

Also have you tried to install the XP driver in compatibility mode?

For starters, I know this is a Windows 7 Forum. I just don't have anywhere else to go really.

Anyways, I have 2 Dell Windows XP Inspiron 700m laptops that I got from friends of my mom's. I want them initially as one to use for my mom, which I'm planning on getting upgraded in all ways that it can, and another one to build video game systems out of. Or both. Not so sure at the moment. What first I need help on, is what the specs are for it for possible upgrades. I'm any of you guys/girls could help me with this.

Second thing, is I want to know if there's any way of getting to Factory Image Restore these. They don't have a Recovery drive by the looks of things, which means i'd have to wipe everything the hardrive has manually, including programs. But the danger of that is that I don't want to uninstall any programs that are on the laptops by default in case of the laptops not working correctly. So if there's a way to clean these off I'd be glad to know.

Answer:Dell Windows XP Inspiron 700m help?

You can likely get a set of factory recovery disks (for a fee) from Dell. That should put them back to the that fresh out of the box state. Including all the bundled programs originally installed. A lot of forum members would likely recommend against doing that and recommend doing a clean install to avoid all the bloatware trial software. If you can find the matching OEM install disk you can do a clean install using the product code on the COA sticker. Assuming its still readable that is. As far as upgrades go about all you can upgrade is the CPU, RAM and hard drive. If you can find the service tag number you can enter that on the Dell web site and get detailed info on that particular model. You'll also get a list of applicable drivers and utilities for that specific model.

Hello Friends
I googled about it. I found that many have problem with respect to display.

Does anybody got it working on Dell Inspiron 700m laptop?

If yes, please explain the steps here guys. It really helps many people like me. And if any specific driver need to be installed, I request you to post the link to download it.

Thanks for your valuable inputs in adbvnce.

Looking forward solution to get windows 7 working on Dell Inspiron 700M

Answer:Windows 7 on Dell Inspiron 700M

after doing some googling, it appears that your laptop has an intel 855gm graphics chip.

neither dell nor intel seem to have vista nor 7 drivers, only for xp.

have you tried these xp drivers, or have you not installed 7 yet because of this issue?

I'm trying to do a complete reinstall, from the Dell supplied disks, on my Inspiron notebook. I have deleted all partitions on the disk (having rebooted using the internal cd drive) ... but when I choose to set up xp on the only space left I get the message: "Setup was unable to format the partition. The disk may be damaged. Make sure the drive is switched on and properly connected to your computer. If the disk is a SCSI disk, make sure your SCSI devices are properly terminated . Consult your computer manual or SCSI adapter documentation for more information. You must select a different partition for Windows XP. To continue, press ENTER."

I'm afraid to turn off the computer for fear I will not be able to boot from the cd again because the partitions have been deleted.... but I really have no idea....

I did all the steps under READ ME FIRST. Attached are logs from MalwareBytes and SAS*. In the past, I've attached HJT logs, but your instructions didn't ask for this, so I didn't run it.

*On ComboFix, after it ran, I let it sit for a very long time on the "rebooting system" screen, but it was clearly stuck. I attempted to restart myself after about 1/2 hour, but it was still frozen, so I forced a shut down. After restart it attempted to create the log, but it eventually came up with "not enough quota to complete this request" or something along those lines.

As far as what the machine's doing; pretty much the same thing after as it was before: Various error messages when attempting to open folders, too many different error messages to list them all. The system is running terribly slow, freezing, and refusing to bring up Control Panel, My Computer, etc. All intermittent problems, though, because I can sometimes get these up after restart. The one constant thing I've noticed, in case this helps, is that the top title bar on the Windows Explorer windows are missing, unless the window is maximized. I manually fixed it under Control Panel, but it won't hold.

Any guidance on what we're dealing with here would be greatly appreciated!

That's correct! We do not want you to run it. But you do need to run MGtools and attach the log from it which is C:\ and it will already contain a HijackThis log.

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop which after turning it on, would just shut off. It didn't matter whether or not the power cable was plugged in. So I thought maybe the hard drive is broken and a file is preventing windows from booting. I got an external enclosure and copied all my files over to another computer, so the hdd worked fine. I then tried to reinstall Windwos XP SP3. I boot from CD, deleted the current partitions, created 1 new one and pressed Enter to install Windows. About 6% in, the computer shut off again.

I imagine this isn't a software issue, since the computer had no software and still shut off (which is why I'm posting in the hardware forum).

Now when it boots, it says error loading OS obviously because there is none deleted in the previous step.

If I reboot and boot from CD again, it gets to the point that says Starting Windows (to install it from disc) and then reboots, and I'm back to where I started.

I also tried Diagnostics from the boot menu (under the hard drive and cd-rom) and after 8 passed tests, it shut off during the memory test. Could it be faulty/old/broken RAM?

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this or reinstall Windows? What could the problem be?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 700m laptop powers off randomly

Could be RAM or it could be heat. First thing to try is to blow it out and make sure it is not overheating.

I am super going bananas from my Dell Inspiron 700m. I think it may be my fault as I will soon explain but let's first get to the problem. I am extremely tempted to throw it against the wall at times. The touchpad mouse and keyboard freezes simultaneously right in the middle of either playing a game or just using the computer for other non-game activities.

The mouse will freeze and I won't be able to type anything at all for a period of a few minutes. When the mouse works again, it may behave erratically for a few seconds and then start functioning again normally. The keyboard freezes and will behave normally once the mouse works again; but, if I touch either before the keyboard returns, then it may cause the keyboard to behave erratic and remain that way forcing me to restart the computer.

As I stated before, I believe it may be my fault. I have tons of music files on my computer and my hard drive is nearly tapped for space. I'm praying it's not a hardware problem b/c I don't have the money to get it repaired. I am a single mom with a very expensive son and can't afford any alternatives. I hope someone can help me find a solution to the problem within reason.

Hello Forum,

I have a DELL Inspiron Laptop and the on board PCI Ehternet in Hardware device shows in yellow exclamation mark it also says unknown device. I went to system information and it shows a Broadcom 440
x100/10 ETC. On the listing it showed it was installed= YES but it did not show a driver. I went to my friend who had an ACER laptop and it was using the same PCI Ethernet ( Broadcom 440) so I copied
his drivers and put them in when ask by my Add Hardware for install of driver. It then showed up on Device list BUT it says unable to START- Code 10, I had put the driver in same place as on my friends laptop WIN32/driver and a Win LAN folder.
I am now totally lost as what to do next . I have the CD from DELL BUT it does not have the drivers on it!
Thanks for any help

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1100 Ethernet PCI problem

Broadcom is junk. I hate it. I run into this all the time.

The hardware will not work with just the basic driver, like other "general" hardware will.

No, Broadcom is SPECIAL. It has to have it's clunky software installed before it will give you the correct driver. Uninstall the software, it takes it's drivers with it as it goes, leaving the hardware non-functional.

And aiming Device Manager at the device will not work. I don't know how Broadcom does it, or why. I can only assume it is because they want their software on your computer.

So my guess is that either the software was uninstalled, or it got corrupt in some way.

So, first thing is to get a copy of the Network software from Dell's support site. Then uninstall the software from "Add/Remove Programs" and reboot. Then install the Network software and that should fix the problem, unless the hardware is bad.

I have a Dell Inspiron 700m and would like to upgrade to Vista so it's compatible with my new desktop (Vostro 400). Is this possible?

Answer:Vista and Inspiron 700m

it's possible; however, your 700m will run Vista S-L-O-W-L-Y. you will want to run to your dentist for root-canal rather than use Vista on your 700m. it's not your lappy's fault; it's Micro$oft's fault. Vista sucks. you're better off waiting for Windows 7. i wouldn't. or you can just stick with xp. what's wrong with your xp?

My DVD drive recently stopped working. I was told by someone that I could just replace it with a generic slim DVD drive. But I was looking on Newegg and the pictures of the connectors look different than mine. Anyone have any ideas?

Answer:Inspiron 700m DVD Drive

There are usualy two main types of dvd drive atachments SATA and IDE. IDE is a flat long plug with many pins where SATA is a smaller plug. Dell may have their own type of plug though so I would phone up the company and ask how much a replacement is.

Hi everyone...

Thanks in advance for helping me out.

I have both an inspiron 700m and a xps laptop...both dells obv. After breaking my lcd screen in the 700m i sent my computer in to be serviced. When trying to reformat the inspiron I accidently used the xps recovery and reformat disk to try to reinstall everything on the insiron. The trouble now is, all of the drivers are for the xps but are installed to the inspiron resulting in no sound or recognition of the wireless card, etc. I am pretty sure I deleted my inspiron's partition and cannot partake in the Ctrl + F11 command. If anyone knows how to fix this or recover my old inspiron partition and make it to where the inspiron was like new again with all the right drivers it would be a HUUUUUUUUGE help.

Thank you.

I have been up for 14 hours working on this issue, and I am almost to the point of tears now.

I reset my Dell Inspiron 570 to Factory Settings, and the Ethernet controller needed a driver, so I installed the proper driver & chipset, and tried over, and over, and over. Nothing worked, the card is enabled in the Bios, I have tried over 10 different drivers, I have tried everything I can think of.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 570 - Ethernet Card Issues

Always include the version of Windows in your posts.
Exactly what symptoms are you seeing?
Did you install the chipset driver(s) before you installed the network driver? Unless the chipset is installed first, other drivers may not install or may not work. And if you've installed 10 different drivers, you probably created a mess.
Did you check the Ethernet link status LEDs on rear of the PC?
Did you run the Windows Network setup utility to create the network after installing the drivers? Did you try rebooting the modem and/or router after installing the drivers on the PC?
And just to be clear, you're using a wired connection to your modem or router, not a WiFi connection...?

For troubleshooting purposes, one thing you can try is to install a PCI ethernet card and see if it works. There are also USB to ethernet adaptors you can try.

I am working on my Fiance's Dell Inspiron 1501. It came with vista, and I downgraded to XP several months ago. Since then, I have been connecting to the internet via wireless connections both at home and on campus. However, I just recently moved into a new apartment, and do not have the money to spend on a new wireless router. So, this is the first time since the downgrade trying to connect to the internet via the Ethernet adapter. My problem is this:

I'm getting stuck at "Acquiring network address." After a few minutes it gives me the error saying that it wont work because an IP wasn't assigned and such.

I've tried many, many things. I tried using the ethernet cable the computer I am on now is using. No luck.

I've tried switching ports on the hub I'm using to known working ports. No luck.

I've tried release/renew, no luck.

I've tried releasing the IP of the computer I am on now, and setting that IP as the static IP on the laptop. Here it says "connected" but I still cant connect to anything.

Note: I downloaded and installed the latest drivers from Dell's website for the ethernet adapter (obviously this was the first thing I tried).

I've done lots of fiddling with TCP/IP properties, to no avail.

Can anyone help me?

The USB ports (2 of them) on my Dell 700m have stopped working. I've gone into device manager and everything appears normal. I've tried deleting all of the USB entries and followed by a reboot to no avail. The following is shown in device manager (Windows XP Home):

- Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD
- Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2
- Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4
- Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7
- USB Root Hub
- USB Root Hub
- USB Root Hub
- USB Root Hub

The problem is somewhat fickle. Right now the machine will not recognize the printer or the Palm in either port ("USB Device Not Recognized"), but it recognizes the mouse on both. There are times the mouse is not recognized.

I'm at a loss.

When I put my reinstalltion disk and run the first option it tells me that it can't do it because the xp version that I have is newer than the version on the disk. I am told to go to bios and change the boot order to boot from CD first.

Ok, I do that but then when I get to install xp professional my problems begin.
Once I got as far as agreeing the the User agreement but then it kicked out because of a "missing or corrupt HAL.DLL file."
Lately it does not get that far but goes into an loop when after installing drivers the Setup XP Professional screen shows and says press any key which I do it says "starting Windows" . I get back to the beginning of choosing either start windows xp or start windows xp setup.

I can go into windows xp without the hal.dll error but during a reinstall that error keeps popping up.

I googled that error and learned that it occurs when the boot order is changed. But, that is the way the reinstall disk suggests! Change the boot order.

Just curious, can I format the hard disk first then use the reinstall disk?
Can I use a 'regular windows xp disk?'

Answer:Reinstall xp on dell 700m

I forgot to mention that running setup without changing the boot order after telling me that it cannot re-install because my current xp version is newer I can still continue. It asks for my product code, etc but then I also get the hal.dll error.

Just have to double check that the laptop in question is the same one in the old post you tagged onto in a Dell Inspiron 6000? if its not the same model please let us know what model it is?

Will need the BSOD message if its still happening in full to know where the issue is coming from?
Can you boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot) and the laptop works ok or same BSOD?

Or if no BSOD then try the following and install the Chipsert from HERE, and reboot, then install the Network driver from HERE

Then look in Device Manager for yellow ! marks and name them.

The full driver list for that Laptop is HERE

I am having the same problem with my Network Controller. Only I have installed all the drivers and still see the yellow exclamation point for the network controller.

And for some reason my video controller is also having issues.

Network Adapter: Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller

Things I have tried:
1) Reinstalling the driver and letting it "repair" the installation. - No Luck

2) Opened Device Manager >> Network adapters >> right clicked the Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller >> selected Properties. It says the device is installed and running fine. - No luck

3) Repairing the Local Area Connection (right click >> Repair) and get an error message (see below). I have disabled and enabled it then tried repairing. - No luck

4) Installed the Broadcom Advanced Control Suite which still doesn't help.

Where you having Network issues before the installation of the new HDD and Windows? just wondering if its hardware failure.

Did you install the Intel Chipset driver first before the other drivers? if you didnt or I woudl also do it again, is to download the chipset driver and install then reboot and try your network drivers again, but this time if you have antivirus running then disable it.

Did you download the Broadcom utility or driver? just checking.

Also enter your BIOS and check your settings for network/ethernet being disabled, if in the BIOS menus it also gives an option to reset then do so as at times new hardware can cause the information in the bios to go funky, then recheck and make sure all bios settings are connrect then save and exit bios. Then try and install your Network drivers.

my computer crashed and i had to reinstall Windows XP. when i did that, my ethernet driver was missing. i have looked on the Dell website, but im not sure what i need exactly!

PLEASE HELP!:confused

Answer:missing ethernet driver dell inspiron 6000 windows xp
That is the link for the wired ethernet driver. If you need the wifi driver, you'll need to run a system info tool like Unknown Devices or Everest, then attach the reports generated by the programs. That way we can see exactly which drivers you need; the Inspiron 6000 was several configurations and different options for the wifi adapter and we want to be sure to get the right one. While we're at it, you should take a look at your device manager and make sure there's no other question marks ? or exclamation points ! or red Xs.....

I performed a complete reinstall of Windows XP on my new laptop, and while doing so removed all partitions put on my disk by DELL - I was serious about getting rid of all the junk they put there. I was of the understanding that the extra partitions were for system restores after serious crashes. However, now the stand by function doesn't work - the system will appear to strand by, but will not resume. On DELLs, the power light flashes when standing by, this goes solid again, and the cd drive has some activity if there is a disk present, but the screen and disks stay lifeless.

Has anyone seen this or similar problems on DELL laptops or desktops, and know of any solutions?

Answer:Stand By problems Win XP Pro on DELL 700m

Are you speaking of the stand by option under turn off computer? If so, a good solution is to not use the feature all together. I had a problem previously with the stand by feature, which caused memory issues on coming out of stand by. So if you really don't need to use this feature, I recommend that you don't.

Any ideas what to do? I went out and bought a 150x 4gb SD card for my Treo 700p. Works fine in the Treo, but does not work in the built-in SD reader in my 700m (reader is TI model PCI7420). At first it was freezing the computer when I put it in. Then somehow it was accepting the card, assigning it a letter (F), but when I click on it nothing happens. It just tells me to insert a card, as if it isn't seeing it. Any ideas what to do? I looked on Dell's site for an updated driver but of course the "updated" driver is from 2004. I even tried reinstalling that driver but no luck. It's very frustrating. I spent a lot of money on the phone and the card and I would love to be able to integrate it with that SD reader on my laptop. Why is nothing ever easy.... ANY help is MUCH appreciated!

I have downloaded the intel driver for the chipset which i believed is a Mobile Intel 645 express family, and this doesnt help. Even for the sound i have to download the driver from Realtek website. Hello everyone I have a very pressing problem. I had Vista running on my Inspiron 1520 Laptop. I recently upgraded to Windows 7, ever since then I have had terrible trouble with my Wireless Card. The driver for the card often comes up as not being able to start I often get Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-Card can not start Code 10. I have read that this was a problem when reinstalling a OS or installing a new one with this card. I believe I may need a driver for the chip set or something similar. I also understand that I may have to swap back to Vista though I really do hope I don't. I do believe that a recent update from Dell has made this problem chronic as I did not have this problem when I immediately got the laptop back.

I really am hoping that I can get some help here as Dell is not bothered to help as I am out of warranty and they don't seem to care about this older model laptop.

Thanks again for all your help

Since a few weeks ago, my microphone has only been working when tilting the screen forward. I saw a previous discussion ( ) where people have reported similar problems. Although my laptop was still under warranty when I reported the problem to Dell, they proceeded to sending me an onsite technician with a repair microphone part who said that he could not replace just the microphone because I had a touchscreen (you would think Dell would have checked to send the right part), then a refurbished new screen that did not work at all on my computer, and then refused to solve the problem by arguing that my system was no longer under warranty (which it was not by the time they finally sent the non working screen and I called back to ask for another one to be sent—it was all problems from their side). Wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and if they were able to fix it themselves, as now my microphone is not working at all, not even when I tilt the screen.

I have also noticed the same problem for the touch screen. It only works when the screen is tilted forward, and I am afraid that, like the microphone, it will reach a point of no return. It seems to me that there is some faulty wiring from the screen components into the base. Any help would be much appreciated!

Recently, after returning from being out of town for a week, I discovered my wireless router was not working.  After attempting to reconnect with no luck I purchased a new router today.   I successfully connected the modem, router and pc and attempted to run the software for the wireless NetGear router.  Here is the message I get: No Adapter  The Ethernet adapter is either disabled or no Ethernet adapter is installed on this computer. Either enable or add an Ethernet adapter and run the application again. In checking the adapter in Device Manager it IS ENabled.   Using the Thinkvantage Productivity Center I updated the adapter and I still get the same message.  Obviously the wired connection is working (as I'm here!). Any suggestions? NOTE:  While I was away I used TETHER between my BlackBerry and laptop to connect to the internet.  I noticed, of course there is a new TETHER adapter listed in Device Manager.  I have disabled that in case it was having some affect on the Broadcom, but that made no difference.

I know this may sound like a stupid question, but what would be the difference between WiFi and broadcom Ethernet. Can I connect anywhere with either one? I just ordered a IdeaPad Y550 and ordered with the broadcom Ethernet that comes with it, im now wondering whether I should have ordered it with the Wifi instead.. Any help and knowledge would be greatly appreciated.. Thank you so much for any and all help

Answer:wifi verse broadcom Ethernet

Are you saying that you ordered without any wireless capability? Ethernet uses a cable to plug in to a router or cable/dsl box.Wireless is capable of connecting without cable to same. Also wireless hotspots, etc. Most laptops come standard with both, so I am not sure exactlywhat YOU mean by WIFI.

Hi,I've already seen a topic on this board with the same question and I know that there was no answer, so I've decided to start a new topic. I have a Lenovo Y570 and there were no problems with it until yesterday. It started with my Ethernet controller being unresponsible, then it disappeared from Device Manager. After reboot it came back, but with error code 12 (not enough resources). And after another restart really strange thing happened. My Broadcom Ethernet card became four different devices (one of them was an Ethernet card, one was Broadcom SD controller and two others were Broadcom Cardreaders - that to say, Y570 has a Jmicron SD cardreader) After deleting a PCI hub, under which these were located and refreshing configuration I've managed to make my Ethernet controller work, but it would sometimes hang my computer. So, there are four types of rebooting now:1) Everything works - rare2) No Ethernet controller or it is showing a code 12 - common3) Four devices instead of one - sometimes4) Hang on boot - sometimesI've done as was written in the answer to old topic, but it helps only for some time, and when I use my Ethernet controller instead of WI-FI, it hangs every so often. So, the question is: is this a hardware or software problem? I'll try to use OKR to get to factory defaults, and if it still not working, then this is a hardware problem.

Answer:Y570 and Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet

You could try reinstalling the ethernet drivers first and then see if it gets solved.

Hi, Has anyone else encountered a problem where the NIC is no longer communicating? In Windows XP I'm being told my network cable is unplugged - I've checked and double checked everything. I have used different cables (which have all worked from my other laptop) - have uninstalled/reinstalled the broadcom driver, restored to a restore point of 2 weeks ago, and even taken the drastic step of rebuilding the notebook, but still no joy! On checking the device and driver, it states that all is working correctly. I'm not getting a connection either when using the web client available in the lenovo startup options which I assume negates any Windows XP cause of the problem. I'm starting to consider that the NIC has a hardware fault which the netbook is not picking up.  Wi-fi on the other hand is working fine. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Jimmy

Tried uninstalling the adapter, and reinstalling?  Best done from Windows safe mode.  If Windows asks if you would like to delete all the associated files, when you are uninstalling, click yes.  Reboot, and Windows will hopefully detect new hardware.  If you have updated drivers lying around, try using those first. If that does not work, check the Bios to see if the ethernet adapter is enabled.

I found an old Dell Inspiron 530a in my house, it was stored because it didn’t work anymore, so I got in the job of restoring it. I found out the problem was the PSU, so I replaced it and it worked fine for about a week but 2 days ago, the computer froze for almost 2 hours, so I turned off the CPU. After that, the computer does not want to boot, I press the power button on the front of the PC, and it remains in an orange light, and in the inside, there is also another orange light in the Motherboard. The fans start very loudly and don’t stop until I unplug the CPU or I turn it off from the power button. I have tried these “solutions” for what I think is the problem:
Removing the Motherboard battery
Removing the RAM
Disconnecting the 24-pin from the motherboard
Disconnecting everything from the PSU
Switching the jumpers near the batteries
I don’t know what the problem might be, but I am almost sure that the PSU is not, since I bought it with a higher capacity than the original PSU and I have done the tests with a jumper in the 24-pin connector
The new PSU is a  “Coolmax V-500 Series 500W 120mm ATX Power Supply” and everything else are original Inspiron 530a parts.
Thanks for any assistance you can give me

Hi everyone,

First off, I'd like to thank everyone in advance for their time and help with this issue.

I recently upgraded to windows 10 on my desktop. I've run into a problem with my "Broadcom NetLink TM Gigabit Ethernet" card, basically the issue is that the internet connection will suddenly stop and show as limited access. I get the error message "Default Gateway not available." I can usually fix it by restarting the computer or auto troubleshooting, but then the connection could break again after as little as 5 minutes. I've been unable to fix this problem after hours of searching through the interwebs. Through my googling this seems like an old issue dating back to windows 7/8/8.1 (maybe longer?) and usually is resolved by updating or manually reinstalling a new driver. I can't find any help for windows 10, and the solutions presented online aren't working for me.

I've tried these fixes:
Disabling the firewall. (Failed)Updating the card automatically through device manager. (Failed)Uninstalling the driver completely to let windows recognize the card by itself on restart. (Failed)Looking for general windows updates. (Failed to solve problem.)Manually installing new drivers from the Broadcom website. (I noticed there were no newer windows 10 drivers available on the site. Maybe I was looking in the wrong place? Either way, it made me wonder if perhaps the reason this issue is happening is that there are no windows 10 drivers available for my Et... Read more

Hi and thanks for any advice you can give, it's really appreciated.

I have an HP Compaq 6715s laptop with Windows 7. I have had a problem for sometime where the modem (the aforementioned Broadcom 590x 10/100 Ethernet) will not work wirelessly any more. I just get an icon in the bottom corner with a red x over a monitor and it doesn't seem to be able to detect any wireless networks. This has happened quite suddenly and I've not changed anything on the cpu that I'm aware of. The modem does still work if I physically plug it into the router.

Windows insists that I have the latest drivers and not being hugely technical, am at a bit of a loss to know what to do.
Thanks in advance

I need to replace my XPS8300 Broadcom Netlink TM Gigabit Ethernet card and I was told by DELL that it's not available.  Can someone tell me a good network card to replace the existing one?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:XPS8300 Broadcom Netlink TM Gigabit Ethernet replacement

The Ethernet "card" in the XPS 8300 is actually built into the motherboard.
Why do you think the onboard NIC has to be replaced? Sure it's a hardware issue and not software?
Easiest way to do this would be a USB>Ethernet dongle.  Plugs into any USB port on the PC. I use one with my notebook which doesn't have onboard Ethernet. Not very expensive and works fine. A USB3>Ethernet dongle will give better performance than a USB2>Ethernet dongle, assuming you have an USB3 port available  on your PC.
Other alternative would be to use WiFi. If your XPS 8300 didn't come with an add-in WiFi card, you could get a USB>WiFi dongle.  Get one that supports the 802.11 "ac" WiFi standard, which is currently the fastest, assuming your router supports "ac". Otherwise get an 802.11 "n" WiFi dongle.

Hi ,
I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to install the above driver onto a D230MT machine. It is running XP SP3 and was a fresh install when I started and I have been going down the list of unknown devices installing correct drivers as I go along. I checked the Vendor as Broadcom and the Device id is 4401 so know it is this. I did check the HP website and tried the network drivers they had listed but these did not work either.

I have found and downloaded from the Broadcom website the zip file for the driver but there is no executable file within this, so have extracted the files to machine (specifically windows\system32\drivers) plus other locations locally but have been unable to install the driver, please could someone point me in the direction of where I am going wrong. This is drving me batty and I am running out of ideas.
Thanks, in anticipation.

Answer:[SOLVED] Unable to install Broadcom 440x 10/100 Ethernet

Hi there, Are you the administrator to this machine?
So from what I have gathered when you go to device manager the network adapter is missing. Is there anything else missing.

Go to start then run and type ncpa.cpl
check if there is any network adapters present.
One other thing that springs to mind is that you also need to install the motherboard drivers. Sometimes the network adapter comes integrated so it means you need to use that CD with your pc to install it or go to the manufacturers website and download it from there.

By the way when you downloaded the driver did you choose the correct Os i.e. windows XP 32bit.

I have been following the issue regarding Ethernet cable and wifi connection problems with many manufacturer's PCs FOLLOWING the UPGRADE to WINDOWS 8.1.  One doesn't have to survey Microsoft's support site and other third-party tech forums to see this is a large and growing issue.  MANY users have PCs and laptops from ACER and numerous other companies that utilize the Broadcom Netlink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet chipset and these users are posting the same symptoms and issues surrounding the loss of speed or (mostly) dropped connections that were never experienced prior to the upgrade. In checking with other users and their Laptop models, I have read and heard that any update to the Broadcom Netlink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet driver does not exist.  Numerous other driver updates are posted here in the ACER support site but nothing regarding the Ethernet driver.  To me, it is not an issue with ACER nor with any of the other OEMs utilizing the Broadcom chipset.  However, there are no updates posted by Broadcom and Microsoft appears to be referring users to the OEM's support sites to get any new or updated drivers.  I think we are in a old-fashion "black-eye syndrome" where neither company is taking possession of the problem. Sending ACER fans and users to the Driver update page WITHOUT any new information/fixes for this ethernet issue is not consistent with ACER's reputation and quality.&nb... Answer:Re: Aspire 5740 Broadcom NetLink Gigabit Ethernet ...

The Aspire 5740 shipped with Windows 7 operating system.
We do not support Windows 8 on the Aspire 5740, nor Windows 8.1.
Drivers have not been posted for this system for Windows 8.  I do not forsee that changing for Windows 8.1.

Friends on my Compaq DC7600 with a typical Broadcom ethernet controller, running Windows 8 Enterprise RTM 32-bit, the network performance is unreliable. With my windows 7 hdd in and running its flawless. If I still a USB wireless device in and run it to the same access point as is hosting the cabled connection, it is fast/furious. Sometimes the network link via CAT5 will start off with a blaze but then quickly drop to a crawl inside of 1sec.
Anyone seen this?

On ordinary internet traffic, flipping through web pages, it seems "normal" but the halt/herky/jerky disease triggers on any long-download item [such as a speedtest or a file download]

clues? Should I replace the default windows 8-installed driver with something else?

Answer:Unstable Broadcom/CAT5/Ethernet network speed. Is the driver buggy?

Have you tried shutting everything down - power off - leave for a few minutes and then power up.

Hello. I made a clean Vista installation from my recovery partion and installed new drivers for all controllers. But the NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet NIC  is pain in the ass.I have to disable/enable it every time after R60 went out from sleep state to get LAN work. NetXtreme's  driver version is which seems up-to-date. Any Idea? P.S. Power managemet  WOL option - Wake up from a Magic Packet - is enabled. May be this is the case?

Answer:R60's Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet NIC doesn't work after standby/wake up in Vista

When I unchecked the 'Wake up from a Magic Packet' option and checked 'Allow to turn off the device for saving power' NIC works with no problem after standby/wake up transitions.  Does anybody use WOL? Before facory reset of Vista WOL function was OK.

Dell computer, onboard ethernet.
Reformatted, (was XP home) put a fresh install of XP Pro SP2

Ethernet connection no longer connects to the Cable modem, could not read the modem's address. Had to hook it up via USB. Worked fine.
Trying to get the ethernet connection to work. The owner of the computer to the bad boy to bestbuy to check it out. He says they were able to get a connection via ethernet, but that it's the Windows that is causing the problem.
Might it be the drivers?
Does anyone have experience with Dell pc's with onboard Ethernet failing after changing the Windows to a Windows that did not come with the system? This is a registered copy of windows.
I was going to try putting in a PCI Ethernet card, but he says that bestbuy was able to use the ethernet connection to connect when he brought the pc there. Which I don't understand.

Hello everyone,

Both the laptops Dell Inspiron 15R and Dell Inspiron 7548 came with 6 GB of RAM. I'd like to upgrade it to at least 12 GB by replacing the 2 GB dimms in both laptops with 8 GB dimms.

Was wondering whether it is safe and okay to combine different memory modules from different manufacturers.

I'm also leaving the US next week and so would prefer getting RAM that's more reliable and wouldn't mess up the laptops.

Could you guys please recommend which ones you'd get? I've bought Samsung and Crucial in the past and didn't have any issues.

Here's the existing RAM information from CPU–Z:

Inspiron 15R:

Inspiron 7548:

Based on the above information, could you please recommend the sticks that you would get, preferably from Amazon?

Dell's upgrade page for Inspiron 15R recommends this one:

Dell 8 GB Certified Replacement Memory Module for Select Dell Systems - 1600MHz LV SODIMM : Memory | Dell which is 1600 MHz.

So can I get this one for that laptop: Kingston Technology 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L (PC3-12800) 1.35V Non-ECC CL11 SODIMM Intel Laptop Memory KVR16LS11/8 at

This would match the manufacturer of the existing stick (Kingston).

Dell's upgrade page recommended the same stick for Dell Inspiron 7548 as well.

Since I wasn't able to locate Hyundai's 8GB stick, is it okay if I get Kingston or Crucial's stick:

Kingston Technology 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L (PC3-12800) 1.35V Non-ECC CL11 SODIMM Intel Laptop Memory KVR16LS11/8 at ... Read more

Answer:Upgrading RAM on Dell Inspiron 15R and Dell Inspiron 7548 laptops

Can't comment on the compatibility, however, make sure laptops support 8GB RAM in a single slot, with 16GB total.

My grand-daughter has a Dell dimension 2400 and the Ethernet connection does not work. PC works fine at my place with a wireless connection. I have searched Google and a Dell forum and they all say to download drivers, which I have done.I get them on to my PC and save then open, but nothing changes. Also I cannot find Ethernet listed anywhere in System/hardware/devices to see if it has any warning symbols.Any suggestions welcome.

Answer:Dell Ethernet connection problem

I had a similar problem, just this morning - I found Ethernet listed under 'Other' in Device Manager - I was then able to highlight Ethernet and Update Driver, which fixed the problem.

Over the last 2 days I have been having a problem as indicated in the title of this post. The fault has rectified itself 3 times, but again today, it is back to "battery plugged in, not charging." As I am running the laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium; 32 bit) on the adapter without problems, I assume that the adapter itself may not be faulty.
I also have a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop running Windows 7.  Can I safely use that adapter with the Vista laptop, without causing damage to the Vista ?  If it is safe to do so, and the battery on the Vista starts charging, then it would indicate that the Vista adapter/charger has some kind of fault.
Hoping someone can give me some guidance. Thanks.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. Battery plugged in not charging. Can I use adapter from a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop ?

If the adapter has the same plug and the same or higher power rating, you can swap them.
Check to see whether the 1545 recognizes the AC adapter or whether it shows unknown (F2 at powerup).  If it shows unknown with two different adapters, you have a bad power jack or a bad mainboard.

I started the laptop and it surprised me by indicating it was going through a hardware test.  When finished it indicated that there were no hardware problems.   Next what appeared n the screen was as follows: AUTOMATIC REPAIR Your pc did not start correctly.  Press RESTART to Restart Your PC which can sometimes fix the problem.  You can also press Advanced Options to try other options to repair your pc. When I click on RESTART, the Dell fails to restart and then four options appear on the screen: 1:  Continue (Exit and Continue to Windows 10) If I do this, it simply repeats the process and brings me back to this window.
2:  Use A Device  (Use USB Device, Network Connection or Windows Recovery CD When I click on this one I get the following: UEFI:ST1000LM024 HN-M101MBB, PARTITION 1
3:  Trouble-shoot  (Reset Your PC or Used Advanced Options When I click on this one I get the following Choices a:  Lets you choose to keep or remove your personal files and then reinstall windows b:  Factory Image Restore:  Restore your system software to a saved system image c:  Advanced Options
4:  Turn Off Your PC
I’m scared to death that I’ll make the wrong choice or do the wrong thing and lose all the data on my PC.  Can you provide a careful systematic approach to proceed to avoid unpleasant consequences?

JUst in case ,my account is the only one on the comp and its an addmin account.I have 756 mb ram and a 1.5ghz proccesser.

Answer:dell inspiron log on problem

Sounds like you have some start-up programs that are either conflicting or just taking a long time to load. Go to Start->Run->MSConfig, go to the startup tab and disable pretty much everything. Then restart and see if that fixes the problem.

If it does you'll have to add program by program (the ones that you want to be running) until you find out which one was causing the hang.

I have a Dell Inspiron 3656 and been having it for over a year. It didn?t have problems until recently.
Every time I?ve tried to power it on, the computer doesn?t actually connect to the monitor. I know my monitors are working since the two display a ?no signal? on their screen. The power button on the PC is a solid white, I checked the power supply diagnostic system and it displayed a green light. The computer, when turned on, does not show a red LED like it?s supposed to in front of the case. I?ve also noticed that it doesn?t go into sleep mode.
The problem isn?t the power supply and it?s not the monitors.
What should I do?

I know this is a longshot since a problem like this is hard to diagnose remotely, but here it goes.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 (typo) laptop, I don't think the specific specs are entirely necessary for this problem. I dropped it a couple of feet when we were moving into the new house and it landed on the corner (dang...). Now I get no lights, no boot, no anything when i press the power button. I tried every combination of swapping the battery/putting it in another slot/running of just AC adaptor... no dice. Since it is no longer under warranty, I decided to pop off the top panel that covers the power/reset buttons and inspect that circuit board for any cracks or busted solder joints and I saw none.

If anyone has any ideas about the possible source of the problem I would apprectiate it. Actually, I would even appreciate a recommendation on the quickest way to access the mobo and power supply on this particular model, thanks.

Answer:Dell Inspiron problem

I think that the power supply on those is built into the motherboard. You could try the usual, removing any extra devices and drives, reseating the memory and seeing if the system boots. Other than that you will need to remove about every screw you see in the back and several others to get to the system board. BOL

Remove the battery and disconnect the AC power.
Remove the memory door.
Remove the miniPCI door.
Remove the hinge cover.
Remove the keyboard.
Remove the palmrest assembly.

I'm looking at a Dell Inspiron 1300 which appears to have lost its USB drivers. Tried using the XP SP2 disc as the source to no avail so I reinstalled Service Pack 2 complete. Still no good. The machine just keeps telling me the drivers can not be found. It asks to connect to the internet to find them but, of course, my modem is USB!!! - Help please.

Try going into the BIOS of your laptop and checking the USB configuration, it might help as the USBs should automatically work

This Dell Inspiron 1100 (os xp pro, a 1gig cpu around 1gig of main memory and a 250gb hard drive) is working but it offen will reboot it self, prog's lockup and shut down and both Firefox and Internet Explorer will crash and shut down. I need to fig out why it crashes and reboots it self. I have a spare 1100 laptop that I can take spare parts off of. The motherboard in the 2nd laptop is dead. I know it is an old laptop but this is what I have to work with in a portable setup to take with me until I can afford to replace it with a newer laptop.

I am running a Dell Inspiron i7 N5110.

The problem that I am experiencing is that every time I run a fullscreen application, usually a game, online or standalone, I keep getting kicked back to the desktop every 15 seconds or so and I have to click the icon to activate the application again.

I updated all the screen drivers, ran Advanced System Care, disabled dwn.exe, fixed the registry and the problem still persists.

I am out of ideas.

Any help out there pretty please?

Answer:Software problem with Dell Inspiron

First thing uninstall Advanced System Care those programs often do more harm then good.
By dwn do you mean dwm Desktop Window Manager, or something else?

How old is the system?
Has the heatsink ever been blown out with a can of compressed air?

lets get a look at the temps the system is running D/L and run Hardware Monitor do something intense like a virus scan or gaming for a bit, Alt+Tab back to HWM expand all the trees and use the Win7 snipping tool to grab a screen shot of the HWM window, post the screen shot using the paperclip button in the advanced message box(Go Advanced button).

I have all the drivers up-to-date and all Windows updates installed and I cannot solve it. Please assist.

I think that is being caused by the Bluetooth.  You might try disabling it in the Device Manager or Bios to see if the entries stop.
What Wi-Fi card do you have in the system?

I've got a 2 year old Dell Inspiron 530 desktop. It has Windows Vista Home Premium, I have all the cds that came with it. I had had to restore it, It installed Windows fine, but now I have to install the Nvidia card and I'm stuck. The computer came with a Nvidia cd, but it doesn't auto play. The cd says it contains drivers for the 8300 GS and the 8600 GT. I have the 8300 GS. When I explore the cd I get 8 different drives, none seem to work. I went to Dell Laptops, Desktop Computers, Monitors, Printers & PC Accessories and entered my service tag and it says I need to download "R170550.EXE", when i click to download it it won't finish downloading, and that file is not included on the Nvidia cd thart came from Dell. I have a Toshiba LCD TV as my monitor. Windows looks ok, but it is too big for the screen and some of the Start menu is missing along with the menu/toolbars at the top of all windows. When I got the PC I hooked it up to this TV and everything worked. Now when I go to the display settings I can't get anything better than the lowest settings. How can i fix this?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 530, problem with Nvidia....

You can download what you need direct from Nvidia. Click THIS LINK and download and install the drivers you need.

Just make sure you know the exact name of your graphics card and the type of Operating System you have so you get the right one
