E-system replace hard drive

Question: E-system replace hard drive

The hard drive in my E-system 3115 broke. I replaced the hard drive with a western digital 80gb. I ordered the recovery disks from The Tech Guys. I've screwed in the new hard drive and turned the laptop on, started it up and put the CD in. It's currently saying "Operating system not found".
Any ideas on how to get the CD to run? I thought it would automatically go through the recovery process when I inserted the CD.

Preferred Solution: E-system replace hard drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am getting a S.M.A.R.T. message when I boot my computer telling me that I should backup all my data and replace my hard drive.

I've got the new drive and would like to know the best way to transfer all the data from the old drive to the new drive. (I don't want to have to re install all the software over again)

Is there a way to make an image of the original drive and place it on the new one without having to reinstall all the programs again?

The OS is XP Pro with SP2
CPU: AMD Athlon64
RAM: 2GB

The old drive is 80GB IDE
The new drive is 500GB SATA

Thanks

Several other apps also either don't work or don't work like they did.

When I start SR I can only see one restore point, the one I made the day after I replaced my hard drive.
But now when I try to create a new restore point it allows me to enter the name, then after I click OK I get the message
"System Restore is not able to create a restore point. Please restart the computer , and then run System restore again."
After I restart I run System Restore again and get the same message.
Also, the restore points I made before I replaced my hard drive no longer show up.
When I replaced the drive (with a Maxtore 80 gb), I used their MaxBurn program to duplicate everything form the old one to the new one. It boots from the new C drive and runs OK and all my programs are there, but some act strangely. I'm wondering if these programs are looking for some kind of system volume information tho make sure they are still on the original system.
Office Professional 2000 SR1 is asking for "data1.msi" from the SR1 upgrade, even though I upgraded long ago.
Other licensed software is asking for the registration key.
The old drive is still in my machine as slave with all the programs still on it. Did MaxBurn not copy some hidden files I can rescue from the old drive? Supposededly the new drive is an exact duplicate.
My only copy of XP Home is on the OEM CD that came with my machine. I REALLY don't want to install hundreds of programs again. Is there some se... Read more

My primary HDD was failing so I backed it up and replaced it with a larger 1TB drive.  After reinstalling everything the new drive is displaying the same size as my old drive and the extra space available is unallocated.  I can allocate it as
a separate drive but I find that annoying and would prefer to just have my primary C: drive show up with all of the available space.  I formatted the extra space and made it available separately as drive G hoping that I could EXPAND drive C but that option
is not highlighted as selectable on drive C for some reason.  Should I just live with this extra space or is there a way to easily combine C and the new G space?

The R51 2887-W1F has a dead HDD.I start the laptop and WinXP Pro sits at the opening screen for 45 minutes.Nothing new installed, infact the Access button just freezes the laptop after a while too. I pulled the HDD out and ran a number of hardware tests, even MemTest86 for 4 hours and the laptop is in good shape.I put the HDD on an 2.5"-to-3.5" IDE adapter and tried to get 3 different PCs to see the HDD but I can't see the HDD and so I can't copy anything over to the PC.Any thoughts on how to do so? Since it appears to be a dead/dying 20GB HDD, I was going to replace it with a 80 GB HDD.I understand that's the biggest this R51 can use/see. I know the R51 had a special partition with some files, and IBM has a TON of special drivers too. So what problems can I expect with an outright replacement of HDD?Do I actually need the special partition & if so how do i install it? Moderator Note; please update your profile with your correct country location as per the forum rules. Answer:R51 2887 Hard drive is dead, how to replace the drive and setup.

You should be able to upgrade to any PATA size drive of 9.5 mm thickness that you wish, there is no limit in size. So you can get a 250 gig if you want, any harddrive brand. If you don't have the original recovery cd, then you will have to use off the shelf version of the XP pro cd and activate it using your own s/n on the bottom of the laptop. You can download most of the drivers off the Lenovo.com support site.

Hi,

I disabled the optical drive from Windows System folder because it was faulty and slowing down my computer.

However, now, a virus has stopped from starting Windows.

Since this configuration of Windows on the Hard Drive, can I replace the Hard Drive with a new one so it can:

A. Reset my configuration to allow a Windows Installation disk to boot up from the "newly installed" optical drive,

B. Erase any prior infected files I may have had on the previous Hard Drive.

Thank you,

P.S.

The computer is a Dell Inspirion 2200 Notebook.

Brand names are irrelevant especially when you are installing your own OS.

That would be the idea if you have it set to boot from disk in the system BIOS. The CD/DVD must have first priority over the HDD to boot.

BACKGROUND
My 750gb hard disk is failing on a HP laptop that came preloaded with W7 home prem. I have a SMALLER excellent 500gb, 7200 rpm hard disk that I'd like to replace the failing hard disk with. I've read that my W7 System Repair DVD will not restore my recent system image (on NAS) to a smaller partition. The C: partition on the failing drive is well over 600gb but can shrink to 300gb.
QUESTION
Can I restore a system image from my larger drive "as is". If not, and I shrink my C:\ partition (contain windows) to say 350GB will I be able to restore the system image to where windows will boot?

I have an old copy of (7.0) partition magic that I used to resize partitions on XP machines Can this old 32 bit partition magic safely resize my C: partition. If so, and I create a new system image can I restore it to the new disk?

Please help. Thank you.

Answer:Using System Image to replace 750GB Drive with s 500GB Drive

Download Macrium reflect free home edition, make a restore CD, and either backup an image or clone the drive directly. I haven't used their clone facility but have used their image backups dozens of times and it is good and fast.

Otherwise, with windows backup, you will need to defragment the partition, then shrink the partition, then defragment and shrink.... until you get a < 500 GB partition.

I have had this computer for about 6 years now and have no reason to believe that the HD is about to become faulty. I am wondering if, just as a safety measure, I should replace it or at least add another against the evil day when this one finally wears out. When I get another I would imnagine that I would transfer all my data and the operating (W2K) system to the new one. Can I just copy all of the directories from one HD to the other to achieve this? Will the computer boot from the new HD after I have done it?I look forward to your advice.

Answer:Should I replace my Hard Drive?

Yes, it might be advisible to have a secondary disk as a backup, or even use the current disk as the backup and transfer your OS onto the new one.xxcopy will do the job; the new disk may also come with software that will transfer everything for you.

HI,The Samsung 850 evo, pro have  been voted the best hard drives prize/performance by international PC magazines. If you have the Windows 10 disk you can use it to install the OS on the SSD, you will not even need the product key if windows 10 has already been installed previously on the PC as it will (the same edition) be automatically activated once installed and connected to internet (just click on do not have product key when prompted). You can also insert your product key.You can also download the media creation tool from Microsoft and by running this tool download  original copy of windows 10 iso or create a bootable USB pendrivefrom Microsoft. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Personally I like to perform a clean install (custom install) without recovery drive and get all the most recent drivers from HP site or if necessary from the manufacturer of the device. Here is where you can get drivers for windows 10 for your PC:http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-envy-touchsmart-17-j100-quad-edition-notebook-pc-... Let me know if you need further help,David

Thinkpads should have built in accelerometer (APS) that controls the head parking of harddrive, while some harddrive have builtin shock detection feature, most of the newer harddrive have head parking feature, therefore most of the new harddrive should be compatible with Lenovo's APS. Not sure about temperature reporting, but i imagine it is fairly common, as most other laptops can also report hdd temp. I can use it on my desktop.  If you are worried just get Hitachi Travelstar, Seagate or Fujitsu harddrive.

I've been supporting this Power Mac G4 since it was new in June of 2002.
Other than installing a SCSI card for the photo printer and the occasional cleaning, it's worked flawlessly.
It's in daily use for editing and annotating Aerial photos.
Yesterday I had to reinstall Illustrator for a weird parsing error I've never seen before, and it got me to thinking that the HD has been used heavily for nearly 6 years.
This machine is the backbone of this small business, and they're willing to do what's necessary, so my question is whether it's a good idea to preemptively replace this HD.
6 years seems like a long run to me, but I've never replaced an HD based on age alone, so what do the experts think?

1720-SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failureFailing Drive: SATO OFailing Attribute: #255

Answer:Do I need to replace my hard drive?

Probably. I would back up your data to something else like dvd's or external drive, just to be safe. You do not mention if the computer still boots. If the computer still loads windows seatools has a windows based program to download and test hard drives, works on most all of them, or you can check the make on your hard drive and go to the manufacturer's website and follow the directions to using their disk testing utility. Many times you download and ISO file and make a bootable cd (cause windows no longer loads in many cases), you boot to the cd on start up and run the short generic test and then the long, if it fails you know it's time is about up.http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/suppor...

I want to get the 2tb western digital  internal hard drive for my t40p.  I've been reading that if its not a Lenovo hard drive I might have warning messages at boot, is this correct?  I've compared the size and it looks like it will fit.  Also, my old hard drive failed so what else do I need to get my laptop working, a recovery disk or will rescue and restore work?  Will one of these recover Windows?Message Edited by zorro7444 on 02-17-2009 08:31 AMMessage Edited by zorro7444 on 02-17-2009 01:11 PM

Answer:Need to replace hard drive

Welcome to the forum! Your T40p requires a PATA/IDE hard drive, and the largest one available is WD 250GB/5400rpm. No errors will be triggered, this is a problem only  with T43/p, R52 and X41/T units. You will need a set of recovery disks to get your ThinkPad to factory state once the new drive is installed. Hope this helps.

Both the C and D partitions of my 80GB hard disk are full (Compaq desktop with Win XP). I'd like to replace the internal drive with a much larger one. But I don't want to reinstall all my apps. Is it possible to replace the current hard drive, make it the bootable drive, then move everything from the old drive to the new one, including the registry? If so, how can I do this?

Thanks!

Answer:Can I replace my C hard drive?

Its possible for sure and not too hard either.

Once you have the drive you want to install it will either come with software or you can download free software from the manufacturer of the drive to clone the old hard drive to the new drive. Once cloned just disconnect the old drive and connect the new drive in its place and everything should be as it was but with more space.

You can then add the old drive back in a secondary drive for additional storage.

As a example if you buy a Seagate drive you can use DiscWizard from Seagate to migrate your system over to the new drive: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.j...toid=d9fd4a3cdde5c010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

You can also use third party paid programs with a greater range of options such as Acronis TrueImage or Symantec's Ghost to clone the drive.

Yes.

I did basically the same thing, a few months ago. I used the Magician cloning software for the Samsung SSD, but there are other ways of doing it.

I bought a new thinkpad T61  back in April. I underestimated the size of a hard drive that I purchased.  I want to replace the hard drive with a larger one, I have the ultra bay hard drive adapter,   can this be done using that??? If so, how can I do it?  Is it just as simple as copying the C drive to the Ultra bay drive and then swapping them out??

Answer:Want to replace Hard Drive

Thease easiest way to do this is to create an image of your current HDD then write it to the new HDD when you place it into the main HDD bay. There are a few third party softwares that can do this for you.

My laptop failed to boot a while back, it's off warranty. It passes the hardware diagnostics memory test and SMART Check, but fails the Short DST at about 40%.Failure ID: 6366-73S89V-MFKR61-60SU03Product ID: F5Y12UA#ABLWhen I boot it goes to a screen that reads: "Selected boot image did not Authenticate. Press <Enter> to Continue." when I press enter the computer turns off. I think the hard drive has failed, I tested it's connection and that changed nothing. I am thinking I will replace the hdd with a similar SATA 2.5" hdd or ssd. Is this the right move, or am I incorrect. Thanks

Does Your new hard drive have 39 or 40 pins in the main group where the cable plugs in? Does it say ATA or S ATA on the packaging that the new hard drive came in? Finally are both the old and new hard drives the same width?

My computer is giving me the "imminent failure" message and keeps crashing, so I understand it's time to replace the hard drive. I don't know what to buy and would appreciate some tips. The computer is a Compac Presario 6000 with Windows XP if that helps. I want this to be as painless as possible.

Answer:I have to replace my hard drive. How do I know what to buy?

It's giving you this message because you have S.M.A.R.T enabled in the bios.

This is a self monitoring program for your hard drive, and is supposed to warn you of impending failure so you have enough time to back up your system.

It's not perfect, so I would try a hard disk utility to double check, either from your drives website, or try something like SiSoftWare Sandra and/or Dr. Hardware.

If you find you do need a new drive, basically look for one that is at least ATA100, 7200 rpm, 8 mb cache, and with at least a three year warranty.

Seagate is the only manufacture that I know that offers 5 years on their drives, while others offer usually 3 like Western Digital, Samsung, Maxtor etc, or even only 1 on their cheaper units.

As far as size is concerned, make sure your motherboard supports drives over 137 GB if you are after one that large. Also, Windows XP won't support drives over 137 GB unless you have a CD with SP1 slipstreamed or included.

Installing SP1 after you have installed the operating system doesn't work, it must be part of the installation disc.

i am going to remove an excelstor technology es3230 30gb hard drive because it is grinding and crunching and running very slow.i am going to replace it with a maxtor 40gb hard drive.is it a simple matter of swapping them over and rebooting, then put my xp disc in,or is there more to it?

Answer:replace hard drive

No - that will work fine but - Yes there is more you CAN do if you have a Partition Manager. Install your new drive a master and the old a slave then boot up using a bootable floppy into Partition Manager and copy the entire directory to the new drive. Make the new drive 'Active' and you can then remove the old drive and you will be running exactly as before.

I have a two year old W530. Answer:Replace hard drive with SSD on W530?

I did the same upgrade myself about 1 1/2 years ago, replacing my factory 512GB spinner with a 500GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD in my own W530.  Since then I've added SSD's as a second drive to other M93p desktop machines I've customized for friends and family, picking the newer Samsung 850 Pro in a 256GB size (regaining the factory 1TB spinner for "data").

In the case of the W530 I chose to reinstall windows 7 Pro x64 from scratch, using a retail Windows Installation DVD.  I never use "factory recovery partitions" and recovery media, as I never retain those "recovery partitions".  I always do my own ongoing regular schedulard "system image" backups using Macrium Reflect.  I install of of the latest versions of Lenovo-provided software and drivers directly downloaded from their software/drivers download site into my newly from-scratch installed Windows.

I don't use Optimus at all in my W530, but rather have "discrete graphics" selected to use the K1000m exclusively. So I use the latest retail nVidia graphics drivers downloaded from their site, not anything from Lenovo for graphics.  I have no interest in the built-in Intel HD Graphics.

As far as the physical swap of the new SSD for the old spinner on the W530, my first attempts were unsuccessful because I didn't realize what the Lenovo maintenance manual was trying to convey with its pictures showing some type of difference between the "side rail orientation" when applied to the sides of... My external hard drive went bad. I would like to replace it in its caddy, which I like. But I notice when I took the HD out of the caddy, that there are no actual connections. There is a metal area on the side of the hard drive which I presume is a contact. I don't recall seeing this "contact" on other hard drives.
Do all hard drives have such a contact? How do I know if the HD I buy will operate when I install it in the caddy?

Answer:Dropped hard drive should I replace it?

They should be fine, the heads aren't above the platters like they are if you drop/bump it while its running. If they were in the box when they fell then I'm sure you will be fine, they are packaged to take a beating during shipping.

Even if they aren't you could either return them to the store, or RMA them.

Hey everyone, I think I might've goofed up my hard drive. My Sager NP5170 can not reboot Windows 7, and I can't figure out why. When I tried, it tried installing (not reinstalling) to the HDD, and now every time I turn it on it asks me to put in the information, then it's somewhat fine (screen resolution is a bit messed up), but I also can't get online and it asks me to update my drivers, but I can't do that since I have no disks and because of the internet issue.

So I'm thinking of taking out the current 500GB hard drive and replacing it with a 1TB (Or maybe the 750GB WD Scorpio Black) and just booting Windows 7 onto it. I'm not entirely sure if there's a boot drive that's causing the problem, but from what I've read, there isn't.

What would you guys recommend?
Thanks.

Answer:I think I messed up my Hard Drive, should I replace it?

You didn't state the brand of hard drive you have at this time. I would go to the maker's web site and download their hard drive diagnostic ISO file and burn it to CD disk. Boot from the CD, and have it run the extended test to find out whether the drive is bad or there is some other problem. It can take quite a while to run this test, so be patient.

Also you can use the system repair disk if you created one, to try statrup repair and see if it can fix the boot files on the hard drive. If you have not made one, you can use one from another computer running the same version of Windows you have. You may need to run the startup repair 3 times with attempted reboots between each repair attempt.

Hi, A question or two for anyone that has the t540p. I have an SSD purchased for my t510 still and had intended to swap it over. Unfortunately I have met with immediate resistance from the machine itself. Following the instructions on the Lenovo site: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd029705 it suggests you: unscrew the back, remove a single screw inside and then slip the old drive out. Suffice to say that although the screws remove easily, the drive itself remains firmly in place. To my questions: has anyone successfully removed a HDD from a t540p? Did you have to apply much pressure to dislodge the drive? Does the piece of black plastic that surrounds the sides of the drive remove with the drive? Please can I see any photos/video of you removing the drive so I can check how you do it? The HDD is covered in a silver sliver, it looks as though there are two extra pieces of silver film covering maybe two screw holes, is the drive actually screwed in with more than the one screw suggested on the Lenovo site? Many thanks to anyone that can assist,Tom

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:t540p hard drive replace

The plastic sleeve has four nibs that are pressed into the four screw holes on the side of the drive.  That's how it is attached to the drive.  The "silver film" is actually a metal tape.  It's sticky, but removable.  Once you've removed the screw, just lift up on the tab where the screw fastened the drive holder to the base.  With the screw out, the only thing holding the drive to the board is the SATA/power connector on the drive.  Lift by the tab, then pull the whole assembly away from the board. Peel the tape of gently--it will come off--so that you can put it back on the new drive.  The plastic holder pops off, one nib at a time.  Reverse your steps to install the new drive.

before changing the HDD i would try another SATA cable, the part number is: 50.U86D5.002 to open the back of your ZC, you need to open the 2 rubber feet at the bottom of the back cover and unscrew the 2 screws; then with a pin you need to push in the little hole of the DVD drive until it slide off; then you can lift the back cover.

Hi sevenforums,

I just received a windows message saying that I should repair or replace my harddrive. I am hoping to get some advice.

I am using a lenovo y580, which is known for hard drive heating issue. To resolve this, I took out the DVD drive, bought a HD caddy and replaced my hard drive into the DVD drive bay which reduced the heat significantly.

Right now, I am having the issue of is it a HD caddy failure, DVD drive bay connector failure or the HD failure itself?

Am I resigned to trial and error but running disc check normally or put back the HD into its original bay and test it.

Any help will be much appreciated as I will be buying a new HD or HD caddy. Thanks!

Answer:Repair or replace hard drive

Download and run the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic tool. If it's a Western Digital drive, it's called "Data Lifeguard". The other companies have a similar tool.

The tool probably has at least two tests--quick and extended or something like that.

Hey guys,
So last Friday my computer (dell inspiron 1525 from 10/2008 running vista) completely froze up, restarted and windows wouldn't load ran a test and got a 2000-0146. I reinstalled OS and the drivers and everything seemed to be good until last night. This time the computer kept trying to repair but it would just fail due to a bad disk, tried to reinstall the OS in doing so i notice that it said disk may fail soon. I proceeded anyway, got to a point I could set a check disk test on the startup, but it hung up in the test and now windows won't load again.

I just don't know enough about computers to be confident in replacing a hard drive vs. buying new computer. Any thoughts/insight you can provide would be appreciated. I'd hate to go through the steps on buying and replacing the hard drive and that not correct the problem

Thank you,

And a fresh install of Windows should make it run like new again.

I think the C Drive or main hard drive of the unit was damaged to the extent that the thing can't read itself. I'm told there is no laser reading device - that the drive is hardwired to read itself and from there send the data to where I'm unsure.I'm asking if it's possible to replace the main hard drive with another component. I have a U160 RAID controller and a pair of 68pin SCSI drives laying around that I was thinking of installing in my computer.  The idea is to replace my IDE Hard drive with the SCSI drives and set up a mirrored partition.  The drives are 18GB so they'd only be good for my Windows but here's what I'm thinking:1.  10K drives will certainly improve OS performance, right?2.  Will the RAID 1 slow down any improvements I might notice from adding the 10K drives?3.  Is U160 fast?4.  How do I terminate the SCSI connection on the RAID card that will be outside of the PC?Thanks for the help,PO

Answer:Replace IDE Hard Drive with SCSI

1. Possibly, depends on applications being used.2. No it won't make it run slower, or it shouldn't.3. I assume 160 refers to the MB/s? If so it's better than a 133MB/s IDE but slower than a 300MB/s SATA-II.4. Disable it in Device Manager? If it comes up there.

Answer:How to replace my laptop's hard drive

It's really straightforward. Stick the new drive in the machine, boot from the DVD and let the installer initialize, format and mount the hard drive.  Hard drive "how-to" is on p. 4-10 of the Service manual here: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01868653 These older laptops are a joy to work on. Reminds me of when the computers and pollution control stuff became common on cars. Makes you nostalgic for your 1969 Chevy Impala which you could tune up yourself.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

The hard drive on my computer is not working properly so I set out to replace it with a new one. I have the new hard drive and a windows 7 key from my computer that I bought. However, when I went to the Microsoft website and entered my windows 7 key, it told me that since I had bought the key with my machine, I would have to contact the manufacturer of my product to get more information. I cannot enter a ticket into HP since my warranty ended in 2011, can anyone here help me? I just need the windows 7 Premium 64-bit somehow. I really don't want to download anything from sketchy websites but HP, microsoft and any forums I have looked into seem to indicate that is the best option. Thank you for any responses.

Hi-
I recently had my hard drive begin failing, and after dealing with Dell received a new hard drive. I would rather replace it myself than rely on someone else to do it, as I am trying to learn how to repair my own computer. I guess the word here is HELP! I have looked around the internet, and am feeling that I will be able to accomplish it, but I figured I would come on here first to get some advice, and see whether or not it was a good idea. I have been able to back up my most important documents, and photos (sadly the program freezes everytime I try to put stuff onto a disk, so I was only able to save the most important stuff to a jump drive), and so am ready to begin replacing it. I have a Dell Inspiron 1501. Any tips, hints, how to's would be greatly appreciated!

I have an ASUS eee PC model 1005HAB with a crashed hard drive.

This model netbook does not have a "trap door" on the back or a slide out drive bay. It appears I have to take the entire back off of the unit to access and replace the drive.

I've tried removing the 4 corner screws; the back case won't budge.

I'm trying to locate a service/repair manual. ASUS' web site doesn't have it available as a download and I would rather not pay an unknown source found in a Google search in advance for a manual that may or may not be the official one (I've been burned on this before).

Any ideas on where to find a legitimate download of ASUS eee PC repair manuals? Thanks in advance for your help.

Can't find manuals or videos for this specific model disassembly. I'm an IT pro and I don't want to chance damaging an HP case (I just did that to a G3). Help? Ideas?

The hard drive on this laptop is beginning to make intermittent noises.Where can  I buy a replacement hard drive and how do I transfer the complete contents (i.e. OS, Office Products, 3rd party software, etc.) of my old hard drive to a new bootable hard drive?I assume MOVING all the contents of my old hard drive to the new hard drive satisfies my licensing agreement to have only one copy of the software operating at a time.  I wish to remain with the Windows 7 operating system.

Hi,You can buy any good branded 2.5 inch SATA 9.5mm HDD. Western digital, HGST travelstar are good ones. For moving, you can use Macrium Reflect Free cloninghttp://kb.macrium.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50081.aspxYou need SATA to USB adapter to connect hard drive to computer:https://www.walmart.com/ip/StarTech.com-USB-3.0-to-2.5-SATA-III-Hard-Drive-Adapter-Cable-w-UASP-Stor...But word of caution: if OS is corrupted or hard drive is failing, cloning wouldn't be a good option as it may not successfully move with all OS integrity retainedRegardsVisruth

My new hard drive is on its way,but am a little worried about actually doing it.Is it really just a case of take old one out, replace with new one, format, then replace OS?Another question is,how do I wipe the old drive if its in the pc and still in use?Sorry everyone, but I understand the theory of it,but not the procedures. Thanks in advance,SB23

Answer:Correct way to replace hard drive

why don't you keep the old one as a slave?Swop over the old drive for the new, ensuring it is set as master at the back. Then install the old one as slave in another available ide channel.Proceed to install the OS.I assume it's XP? it will give you the options to partition and format the drive during install. When you're up and running with the OS installed on the new C drive, right click the old drive in my computer and format it.

Hi guys,

So let me explain my situation. I have a 15 month old laptop, with a dying hard drive. Quite frequently when it spins up, the hard drive makes a horrible buzzing/scraping noise. I decided I will invest the money and replace it for the $100 and get a faster one (7200 rpm).

Here's the catch. I have an upgrade disk on order, and only an OEM backup disk (Vista) to reformat.

Whats the best way to replace the hard disk and use an upgrade media to use 7 on my computer?

Answer:Upgrade and Replace Hard Drive

Pull the HDD out of the laptop. Attach it to your desktop, assuming you have one.

When new HDD for laptop arrives, attach that to desktop as well.

Use Clonezilla to clone the old HDD to the new.

Take new HDD out of desktop and put in laptop. Boot the laptop as normal. Enjoy. Remove old laptop HDD from desktop and phyiscally destroy it if there's sensitive data on it. Throw it out after.

Upgrade to Windows 7 on the laptop in any way you see fit.

Hello,I have backed up my c drive (operating system) to an external usb drive using Acronis TI 10. Here is my plan - is it going to work?1. Replace hard drive with new (identical model) drive2. Boot up with my XP installation disc. Create 2 partitions and format them. Back out of the installation without installing XP.3. Boot up with my Acronis TI boot disc. Restore my C drive image from my usb drive to the new partition on my new drive. Thanks.

Answer:Replace failing hard drive

Hello,I see no reason why this wont work, but. Is there so much stuff on there that would be difficult to replace, apps etc. Reason I ask is that starting afresh with a clean format and clean install gives the pc a new lease of life. Theres 2 programs i use, 1 called nlite the other called drivermax pro. The latter will backup existing installed drivers to a file. Nlite will create a windows disc from your existing win xp disc but will also include all your drivers from the file you created with drivermax. So what happens is, you start the instilation of windows, come back later and windows is installed with the settings you want and all your drivers are there. 1 step job done. nlite will also backup programs but to be honest I have never done this.Hope this helps, have a think about it.

I am most grateful for any help!

Answer:Replace with bigger hard drive on HP 620

If it will take a 500 it will take a 1TB and yes, do not try to buy the hdd from HP. Buy it from a retail source due to price considerations. If you buy a 1TB drive and it does not work I will buy it from you at cost I am so sure it will be fine.
