I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Maxtor 6 external Hard Drive

First, try it on another computer. If it works there or not will tell you whether you have a computer problem or a drive problem. You need to know that before you know which direction your further diagnostics should take.

I have Win XP, and I now have a new Maxtor 500 gb external hard drive. I didn't care for the automated back up software included thereon, so I have just been using it to backup. It has files and folders included with my files that I was wondering if ok to delete, or at least backup to a data cd and remove from the drive. They are:

Folders:
MacOneTouch.app
Bin
drivers
EULA (contains .rtf files)
guides

Files:
autorun.inf
launch.ini
launch.exe
mxoicon6.ico
onetouch4.dmg

Answer:maxtor external hard drive

If not powering up then first check fuse in plug to drives power supply.
If power supply Ok try in another machine.
Drive can be removed from case and connected into another case or direct to a spare sata point in your PC (Not Laptop)

Have Windows XP with everything updated, all service packs in place, driver updated.

While my computer will recognize the Maxtor 3200 USB external hard drive and I can even populate/format it, I can't transfer any files to it and it doesn't show up on my Windows Explorer function.

I have done a search on this problem with no successful tips as of yet.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can get this to work?

Thanks

Answer:Help with Maxtor external hard drive

In my computer right click the usb external device
choose properties
choose autoplay tab
select open folders to view files using windows explorer.

You may also check on the other settings tabs.

If this does not work or the USB device is not listed in my computer
take it back to the shop and get them to demonstrate, on another pc that it is working.

180GB Firewire Drive is seen as available in My Computer but is not accessible. Tried on another PC, both XP, and works OK. Returned to first PC and seemed to work at first but now shows up in My Computer but cannot be opened. Any ideas please. This is the third drive from very helpful Maxtor.

Answer:Maxtor external Firewire Hard Drive

Try installing the other firewire card driver (if there's 2 options under 'display a list of known drivers...').

I have a Maxtor External Hard drive....80GB Model 5000LE.
A While back I had a "device error" and searched the web to try to solve it. I guess from what I remember it had something to do with a bad file and it took too long to open up the file in the drive and it timed out or something. Anyway....I defragmented the drive and ran scan disk...problem solved..some files were deleted....kind of upset but not a big deal. Well, it happened again. This time instead a a specific file I could not get into (all these were mp3's and music videos etc...) the main folder (Ex:Jenna's Music and Videos) It kept on timing out......there are over 4000 music files in there. About 40 GB's worth. I couldn't even open the main file. SOOOOO I ran scan disk....defragmented...only this time when I finished the whole folder is gone!! I right click on the drive and it still says the space is being used but I cannot find my music/video files??? I ran file search and everything but I don't know where they are???? HELP!! Are these lost for good? If so...something is taking up the space correct??? No clue what is going on. Thanks.

About 6 months ago I installed a 500-Gig Maxtor External HD I use as a "back-up" source. When I first installed it, it worked fine. Then I had a system crash and had to re-install WindowsXP Pro. Now this external drive is not recognized. A drive icon is also not displayed in My Computer.

In System Hwde Devices, there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the (Maxtor 500-Gig) USB Mas Storage Device. I have made several attempts to uninstall this drive and re-install it but the same identical message appears each time: Mass Storage Device Not Recognized.

I'm also getting a Code 39 error code informing me that the drivers for this device are either missing or corrupted.

Some time ago I was told that I would have to uninstall and re-install Windows XP Pro if I wanted to correct this issue. Is this true?

Hi guys, hoping to pick your collective brains on this one as I'm awaiting a reply from Maxtor/Seagate's email help. My maxtor 3200 series external hard drive won't power on properly anymore. When it worked, once the power cord was connected you could hear thew hard drive whirr into life, and the green light at the front of the unit would emit a solid, bright glow. At the moment, there are no noises whatsoever emanating from the unit, and the front light only flashes, very faintly and intermittently. I've tried two power cables, both of which work on other paraphanalia I've got lying around and I get the same results; so my presumption is that the unit itself is at fault. What does everyone reckon? Could the flashing faint light be something as simple as a loose power connection? Or is it indicative of a more serious problem? Further - whats the likelihood of being able to retrieve data from a knackered external hard drive if the worst has happened? Thanks, Dom

Answer:Maxtor external hard drive problem

No noises whatsoever would indicate the drive is dead. Though possibly a loose connection within the drive casing. As for data recovery, that is another thing altogether. It depends on how valuble the data is to you and whether is is worth the expense (very expensive) of employing a firm who specialise in this field.

I got a free Maxtor external hard drive from a co worker who is basically computer illiterate. It is a maxtor model #3000ls, 40 gig capacity, FAT 32 file system, with a spin rate of 5400rpms. I plugged it in and it works but when I checked the properties there is only about 328 mbs total size and only 300mbs of available space. I did a virus scan, tried to a do an scan to automatically  fix any  file system errors and also did a scan for and attempt to recover any bad sectors. I got nothing and it still has only 328mbs of total space. Is this thing shot???  Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Problems with my Maxtor external hard drive

1.  Root Directory.  How many files are in the root directory within that FAT32 file system?2.  Disk Management.  View the disk's structure within Disk Management to see how it's reported.  To access, select "Start" -> right-click "My Computer" -> select "Manage" -> within "Storage" category on left pane of "Computer Management" window, select "Disk Management".

I have a Maxtor 5000 LE 80gb external hard drive using a USB
interface that I use for storing backup copys of my system. I
would like to be able to use this as a second hard drive when
I am surfing the net or downloading new programs. Is it possible to have my system set up in a way that it would ask me which
drive I would like to access to gain access to my stored programs
and stay in that drive until I request a switch back to my main
drive, which is slowly filling up. I hope I have made my request
clear and look forward to receiving whatever input I get, thanks.

Frank.

Answer:Maxtor 5000 LE External hard drive.

You should be able to that without any problem. Whenever you install a program you are usually given an option of what drive you want to install to; just select the new drive.

Same goes for downloading files, on the Save To screen just select the drive letter corresponding the the external drive and save it there. You can create folders by using My Computer on the drive.

Hi,

My Maxtor External Drive became corrupted and I needed to re-format the drive.

Unfortunately, while Working in Windows XP I accidentally deleted the partition and the drive.

Now I can't get Windows XP to recognize the Maxtor Drive. I tried re-booting the PC and plugging in the Maxtor USB Cable, but this did not work. The Maxtor Drive was my H: Drive.

Can anyone help me get Windows to recognize my Maxtor Drive?

When I deleted the drive I was working in the "Computer Management" Screen.

I navigated to this screen through the following path: Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Ahh I'm so mad! Please bear with me through all this because I really need help!

I'm working on my undergrad research project which involves taping birds with my digital camcorder. I've been working on it for like a month, and have been saving the videos in folders on my desktop. Earlier today, I took all the videos from the desktop and cut pasted them onto a new Maxtor 230 (I think it's 230, could be off) external harddrive - so everything was moved from the desktop to the external harddrive in order to free up space on the computer.

A few hours later, I had another set of videos, so I plugged the camra and the harddrive both in and was transfering the video from the camra directly to the harddrive. My sister and her baby went on the computer while I was waiting for the video to finish transfering, and I clearly told her not to let the baby touch the wires or the harddrive. Well next thing you know, my sister is telling me that the baby not only touched it, she pulled the USB cord thing out of the back of it, then my sister plugged it back it. Now I'm not sure if the video was still transfering at this time or if it was finished.

So I wanted to make sure everything was ok and see if the video went on the hard drive ok - but long story short, the external harddrive isn't working anymore. It still lights up when I plug it in - I checked all the connections and everything, plugged it into all the diffrent USB ports, plugged it into my laptop - ... Read more

hey, I have a External Maxtor 750GB OneTouch 4 Plus drive and I slightly bumped it over the other day while watching a video on it. Now when I plug in my drive it says in the task manager "new hardware found" (im using XP by the way) but when I go to device manager I can't seem to find the drive. My drive now makes beeping and grinding noises for the first three minuets when I give power to it but the drive still seems to spin. Is there much I can do to possibly get my data back besides taking the case apart and plugging it in internally?

Answer:External Maxtor hard drive problem

It sounds like the hard drive itself is damaged and not the enclosure. If so, installing it internally won't do any good. You could always try the freezer trick but I'm not so sure it will work here but you have nothing to lose. If your data if particularly valuable, there is always professional data recovery services. On the other hand if your data was that valuable, likely you would have your data backed up.

I am having problems with the external HD on my PC.
Yesterday I pulled out the cable from it to the PC by mistake. When I re-started the PC a black screen came up with a message saying that NTFS (I think) wasn't working and it needed to scan or check for something. I glanced through the message briefly and it was on a countdown unless I tapped any key on the keyboard. I reached to do this too late and a speedy roll of delete something or other continuously scrolled up. I ended up turning off the PC manually to stop this.
I haven't a clue what it is or what it did, but the PC is now crawling along. The external hard-drive is showing empty, but I can access all the files on it. The problem is that the files are not happy being moved, copied or attached to emails. When I go to the image files they will not show icons without contacting administrator. All sorts of other stuff has probably happened that I don't know about.
IE is at a snail's pace and then seizes and 'not responding'.
Help!!!!

Answer:Maxtor External Hard Drive problems

I would try running the chkdsk /r command on the drive.

Go to My Computer, select the drive, right-click on it, select Properties.

Follow the instructions under Starting Check Disk at http://www.hard-drive-help.com/chkdsk.html , putting check marks in both options.

Hi,

As with a few people on here, I have had an issue with my once thought 'always reliable' Maxtor 300 GB External Hard Drive. Then the inevitable occurred, and as I was writing to it, an error occurred, and computer kind of half froze, so I stupidly pulled out the USB Cable. Now when I plug the hard drive in, it doesn't even recognise it, nor when I try it out on other computers.

So it seemed like the next step was to pull it out of its case, and connect it to my home computer as a secondary drive. Got a friend over to do that for me, and now under disk managament, it says it is "unallocated", and seems like I can't access it. I tried to "Initialize" it, but doesn't seem to be doing anything.

So I guess my first question is what is this whole "initialize" command, as far as I have read, it is always the first step in formatting my drive (which is the LAST thing I want to do - did I say this data I have is unbacked up and priceless to me?). Is there any other suggestions people have for me?

Thanks in anticipation, cheers David.

Hi

whats the full message it gives when it asks for right drivers, any error code given?

As your mobo has USB2.0 built in anyway this drive should have no issues, but what I woudl try is to delete the USB driver for this drive, to do this unplug any other USB drives and pens, then open Device Manager and open the USB Controller branch and then plug in the drive and you should see a USB Mass Storage Device listed right click this and uninstall, then unplug and replug the drive in and the driver should be re-installed.

Answer:maxtor external hard drive unformatted and undesignated by drive letter

What size is the hard drive?

Do you know what motherboard you have?

STEP 1: CHECK POWER (click for expanded instructions further down the page)

Verify that the drive light and the light on the AC adapter (power supply) is illuminated normally.
It is sometimes necessary to contact Technical Support for troubleshooting and/or possibly to replace the power supply if it behaves unusually.

STEP 2: CHECK CABLING (click for expanded instructions further down the page)

Confirm that your USB/Firewire cable is firmly connected in a port that is on the rear of your desktop computer (if you have a desktop).
Try another USB or Firewire port.
If your drive is powered only by USB, such as the FreeAgent Go, the Maxtor OneTouch mini, and the Seagate Portable drive, then the drive's cable has two USB connectors. Try connecting both of the free USB connectors into a USB port for maximum power availability.
Avoid connecting the drive via a USB hub for now.

STEP 3: WINDOWS SERVICE PACKS

Follow these instructions to ensure that your installation of Windows XP/2000 has been updated to the latest Windows Service Pack.

Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties.

The System Properties window will appear. On the General tab (which will be at the front), see the "System:" information.

For Windows 2000: Update to Service Pack 4.

For Windows XP: Update to Service Pack 2.

Allow your computer to complete the installation ... Read more

I have a 250G Maxtor external hard-drive which I took from the shelf and plugged in last night for the first time in several months. At first I noticed the light blinking erratically and also heard a constant clicking sound, the same sound over and over. I disconnected and then reconnected it, and this time the unit worked okay. I was able to access the contents. Later I disconnected and reconnected it several more times, only to find that it no longer works. All I get now is the unending clicking sound.

As far as I know it has been setting on my shelf for three months or so. To my knowledge it hasn't been moved, much less dropped. Assuming that it is irretrievably broken, are all external hard-drives this fragile? I thought I had been storing my stuff relatively safely -- as long as I didn't drop the unit. Maybe I was wrong. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to help.

....I will seriously have a heart attack if I can't get this solved. I'm borderline an emotional breakdown right now. Excuse the length, I’m just letting you all know exactly what I did (well, from what I remember and to the best of my ability anyway). Sorry if some details are unnecessary; I just have to type it out (feel free to skim).
As stated in the title, I have a Maxtor OneTouch 4 hard drive (500 GB) that I've had for about a year or so (maybe more, maybe less; my memory really sucks). Yesterday, when I put some WinRAR and WinZip files in one of my folders and extracted them, I realized that I couldn’t delete them afterward. When I tried to delete those .rar and .zip files, a pop up window came up saying that my hard drive is unreadable, corrupt, inaccessible…yada, yada, yada, and gave me the error code 0x80070571. I tried a few more times and it still didn’t work, so of course at that point I was like “wtf”. Afterward, I tried to copy some files onto the hard drive, and the same message came up.
That’s when I became worried.
Being the "optimist" that I am, I figured that maybe if I restart my laptop or disconnect and reconnect my hard drive, everything will be fine, but that hidden feeling of doom that I get at moments like these told me otherwise. I have the worst luck when it comes to electronics (especially lately…You don’t even want to know).
And, like always, that feeling was right.

I found some advice from last year regarding how to open the case. I was able to do so and discovered a Seagate 7200 HD which is what someone else stated then as well.

My problem which baffles me is that the unit is no longer recognized. I've tried all the trouble-shooting to no avail.

The unit makes a little noise like it's trying to work. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was at a loss when I opened the case. I was hoping to find something that had come loose inside the metal box, but all was secure. I did not open the drive itself as I wouldn't know how or what to do with it.

Have to start with the obvious...sorry...does it have a power on light that indicates the unit is on?

When you plug it in do you hear the "USB Tone" that indicates new hardware found?

Likewise, if you click on the "safely remove hardware" icon on the taskbar, is the device shown there?

Have you tried different USB cables?

Have you thought about exchanging it for a new one?

My brother gave me his older Maxtor Hard Drive, the One Touch but he threw tha manual away, it gave with this "base" or plastic thing that would let the maxtor stand. And I am not sure if I am suppose to attack this hard drive with the stand. I think it is inconvenient because I bring my hard drive to different places.

Here is a Maxtor One Touch, laying down:

Here is a Maxtor One Touch with a base/stand and standing:
http://www.lordpercy.com/maxtoronetouch.jpg

So here are some questions:
_1) What is the propery way to use my One Touch?
__a) I must always use it standing up with a stand?
__b) I could use it standing up, or laying down, doesn't matter even if the ____Disk's are verticle or parrallel to gravity?

_2) How do I properly turn off the External Hard Drive?
__a) Safely Remove Plug and Play?
__b) Or I could just press the off button?
__c) dont do ANYTHING ur hard drive will die, just turn off computer then ____turn off the drive?

_3) How come everytime I add and remove data, copy and paste, and I wait a few seconds to make sure the drive isn't active, I can't safely remove hardware?

4) Is it better to keep the external hard drive on all day? or turn it off after each use? what happens if I keep on turning it on and off because I keep on saving backup data every 2 hours?

Thanks, for any help I can get man.

Answer:How do I use my Maxtor One Touch External Hard Drive Properly?

If you copy data data to it regularly leave it on.
If you only use it once a day, just turn it on then turn it off.

Use the "Safely Remove" hardware icon,or
if it`s got a power switch use that.

It will work vertically and horizontally.

Don`t bang it,or submerse it in boiling acid.

Answer:Maxtor External Hard Drive doesnt work

Hi, what is the Model number of your drive? I assume it is a USB drive - is your computer USB2 compatible, because I suspect the drive is USB2, which I don't think is backward compatible to USB1.To find out if your pc is USB2 compatible ... Right-click on My Computer and then Left-click on Properties, then on Hardware then on Device Manager, then Left-click on the + beside Universal Serial Bus controllers - if you then see the word Enhanced anywhere within that section, then your PC is USB2 compatible. You can then just close all the small windows that you just opened. That will give us somewhere to start, to try to help you.

I accidentally caught my foot on the usb cord that was plugged into both the external hard drive and the computer. the hard drive fell over on the wood floor. the unit was sitting on the floor. my computer shows that the drive is being recogonized by the computer, but it wil not show any contents of the hard drive. can anyone help?

Answer:Maxtor external hard drive will not respond after if was knocked over on the floor

OK, bad news. The likely scenario is that you have damaged the mechanics of the drive, but the electronics are still functioning, hence the detection, but no initialization.

This is the point where it usually goes to a data recovery company, at considerable expense.

Drives are rated at a couple hundred G's impact force, non-operating, much less if they're spinning. A drop from 3 feet up to a hard floor likely exceeds either of those limits, and collaterally voids the warrant.

I know, I can be such a wet blanket.

That said, I both advise and consent to you waiting for a second, or more, opinion(s).

PS, If any of the trash talk about Maxtor has any credibility, (?), you should have been thankful it responded before it was dropped. Mine works OK, but then so does my Emachines.

Help please i have a maxtor 500gb external hard drive that i store all my music on. i was quite happy listening to some when all of a sudden it stopped checked in my computer and the hard drive wasn't listed as being connected. so i presumed it had become unplugged somehow, checked all connections from drive to laptop and they were solid, but it came apparent that the green power light was not on checked the plug and it was still plugged in and when i pull cable out of drive and try plugging it back in the light comes on for a short period of time (1-2 seconds) then goes back out again.
Now i have over 40,000 tracks stored on there 90% are backed up but is this a fault with the drive itself or the power supply unit??

I have an eMachine T3092 computer to which I added a Maxtor One Touch 160 gig drive, everything is out of warranty. OS = Win XP Pro w/ sp2.

Outline of problem: On 7/21 I left home with the computer and nanny cam on. Returned 2 hours later & found the following message on screen:

Windows Delayed Write Failed. Windows was unable to save all of the data for the file
J: \SMft. (J drive = Maxtor) The data has been lost. The error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or a network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

I could not get access to this file to save it elsewhere. I could not get the Add/Remove Software list to populate. I couldn't do a system restore. I couldn't save anything to the J drive and the computer has been more than a little finicky ever since - very slow to open any/everything, insist I allow popups to open links on the web, or throws me off the internet - things like this. Anyway, tried everything I could think of to fix it, tried the things RoadRunner and eMachine suggested. Called Microsoft & pd them $59.00 to fix it and spent the entire week morning to night on the phone with them till they escalated the problem to the research team who told me that the problem is likely due to a surge, that 515K of data on the Maxtor is available to me, and that approx. 57 gigs of data is on the drive. I've dropped my Maxtor 500gb hd by dropping it on quarry tile floor
Took it apart and saw that I've smashed the rear interface PCB - removed the hard drive from its casing to find that it is'nt a SATA connection.
Does anyone know if i can buy any sort of adaptor to link HDD with laptop USB??
I fear that my only other option is to buy a second hand duplicate from ebay (as this item is discontinued) and use its casing.
Please help a thicko in need

Answer:Broken Maxtor Basics 500GB external Hard Drive

I hope they weren't under warranty. Opening the casing voids warranty.

If you opened the casing, you damage your drive. It's closed tight for a reason.

Just get a new Western Digital. Maxtors are dead.

I'm running windows vista and I have a maxtor touch mini external hardrive. I've never had any problems with it. But now when I open My Computer the harddrive is nowhere to be seen. I'm all up to date w/ windows updates and when I go into Device Manage it says the device is working properly and is up-to-date w/ it's drivers. So what's the deal? I know my computer is registering the device is there because it makes the 'device inserted' noise and in the safely remove hardware tab the device appears as 'USB Mass Storage Device'. In disk management it shows up as Disk 1 (pretty sure it's referring to that anyway) It says it is unknown and uninitialized, when I try to initialize it an error message pops up that states device is not ready- under properties it says it's working properly and up to date w/ drivers. How can get access to my external harddrive? Please help!!!!!

Hi There,

My first post here and I promise I'll stick around and try help out others rather than simply disappear if and when someone's helped me out

My question concerns a Maxtor 3000LS 40GB external hard drive I bought recently. Naiively I assumed that it would get all its power from the USB cable and therefore I'd be able to use it in both the UK (where I am based now) and the US (where I will be based soon). However, when it arrived I realised that it needed an external power source. Serves me right for not reading the spec. properly I guess

Anyway, the power pack that it comes with splits in two i.e. the big chunky bit with the wire leading to the hard drive and the wire that leads to the mains. The hard drive came with two mains leads: A UK compatible lead and a mainland European lead. Now my query is, assuming that I could get hold of a US compatible mains lead, would plugging it into the chunky bit:

a) Not have enough power to do anything?
b) Frazzle the components?
c) Cause a rift in the space-time continuum?

I confess, I didn't pay much attention in physics class and so am a bit baffled by volts, amps, ohms, current and other flavours of electrickery so if anyone - preferably someone with knowledge of the hardware - could give any advice, then I'd be really grateful.
Many thanks,

Andy

Answer:Maxtor 3000LS External Hard Drive - Using International Power Sources

Look at the specs on the power supply. It may be a universal supply, many of them are nowadays. I just checked a camera and a USB 2.0 hard disk supply, both state 100V to 240V 50/60Hz, so they'll run either in Europe or the US.

This past Friday, the 3rd December, 2004 while in the middle of a System Restore, my system was interrupted by a local power outage. Since then my Maxtor 5000/120 GB External Hard Drive has been acting oddly. I first noticed a problem when rebooting the system when a "CHKDisk" for my Maxtor Drive was scheduled, which seemed to take quite a long time during the first of 3 phases. During the first phase it simply kept listing files on the Maxtor which were "unreadable". I simply escaped from this and attempted to reboot. Each time I reboot, the "CHKDisk" begins again, even though it's easy to cancel it.

The next issue relates to "Add/Remove" Programs under the Control Panel for Windows. The Maxtor Drive prevents the "Add/Remove" Programs window from being populated.

All scans by NORTON are also prevented when it gets to scanning the Maxtor drive.

While it is usually easy to access any file in the Maxtor Drive, now it is laborious and no file opens without excessive wait times. All files appear to be there. I already reformatted the drive from Fat to NTFS at time of purchase.

Six times I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Maxtor software and disconnected the drive and reconnected it only to face the same problems I previously listed.

I contacted DELL, my cpu manufacturer but they were of little assistance...their Tech first had me go online to check for adware and spamware, then suggested I contact Maxto... Read more

Answer:Maxtor 5000/120GB External Hard Drive Presenting Problems...Can Anyone Help?

I think your hard drive got damaged because of the power outage.
If I where you, I would backup what I need from the hard drive and reformat it.
I don't think it's a problem with the software. It is more likely that it is the hard drive itself that is causing the problem, formatting the drive could solve your problems.

ok i needed to reformat my computer and my external hard drive was plugged in as well. the xp disc was in and then my friend hit the down arrow and reformat selecting the external not the internal. before it got to 2% i turned my computer off. now when i plug the external in to the usb nothing shows up as being there. is there anyway that some of my stuff is still on it and if not how do i go about making it show up again? if anyone could help it would be highly appreciated. thanks

Answer:Maxtor A01A250 OneTouch 7200 RPM 250 GB External Hard Drive problem

in order to reformat you need to delete the existing partition. That part pretty much nuked your ability to see the data. You may try data recovery software(do a search). Or you can pay someone to do it for you(expensive). Depends on what you have on there and what it's worth to you. Don't get your hopes up though as there is no guarantee your data is recoverable.

Hey,
Thanks in advance for the help. A couple of days ago google started redirecting after clicking each link on a search results page, also spybot and malware bytes won't run. I tried re-installing spybot, but to no avail it didn't work. I keep getting the bluescreen of death (I apologize in advance for not writing down what the screen said, as soon as I get it again I'll post it) and my computer will crash randomly. My external hardrive is recognized in my computer, but in the maxtor manager program it isn't recognized. Also, I recieved several warnings from Mcafee right when I started seeing the malware take affect, saying that there Mcafee was blocking buffer overflows. I ran Dr.Web scanner and removed a trojan entitled Backdoor.tdss.115 and ran Kaspersky prior to running Dr.Web scanner, and it was found there also. Here are the logs:

Install and setup; Maxtor One Touch 4, 500GB External Hard Drive, and install; Acronis True Image Home Program

NOTE: See system specs below for my current setup.

I need advice and recommendations, and any pitfalls to avoid, to ensure that I end up with a trouble-free install and operating system.

I want to install and add both of the above to my current setup, but am uncertain about the best way to go about achieving a successful result.I intend to add the HD to take some pressure off my ACER C: Drive [12GB free of 52.1GB], by moving some programs that I have on it, to the Ext HD.Once the Ext HD is installed, is it possible to just do a 'drag and drop' of programs, from the C: Drive, across to the new ?: Drive? Am I able to designate or give the new Ext HD a name? eg. H: Drive.I'm also presuming that the new Ext HD will need to be 'hardlined' and powered on, only while I want to use the programs etc on it, and when doing updates via IE7. Does that sound right?I want to install the Acronis True Image program to the Ext HD, as 'insurance' to clone the content of my Notebook, its systems, functions, settings etc. Does this seem right? Some of the programs that I intend to move to the Ext HD include these and similar others; Family Tree Maker, Photo Shop, Irfan View, Real Player, Open Office etc. Do these appear to 'qualify' for movement to the Ext HD?Are there any issues that I should be aware of, that could affect operations with the Brother MFC-465CN printer/scanner etc.... Read more

Answer:Setup Maxtor One Touch 4, 500GB External Hard Drive and Acronis True Image 11 Home.

Yes you can give the HD a new name. Vista will assign a drive letter, but you can change that later if you wish.

No, you will not be able to 'drag and drop' most installed programs to the new drive. You may have to re-install them. The registry entries will be pointing to their old location and the apps won't start.

By hardlined, I assume you mean plugged in and switched on? Yes, it needs to be 'hardlined' to access the drive.

Using Acronis is a good idea.

Another thing you may want to do before using the external drive is format it as NTFS, to avoid any installation problems if the drive is formatted in Fat32 etc.

Your printer should be fine.

Answer:External Hard drives Maxtor or Seagate

Yes the latest drives all need ( iirc as I only looked at a handfull last week while looking into getting one myself ) USB2.0, so you would have to also buy a USB2.0 PCI addon card to run the EHD from.

on the subject of what drives, I have used, either in work or for friends, both Maxtor and Seagate drives and found them to be ok, as for one with a fan, it is an advantage to have a fan if the ones your looking at come with them especially if the room where it will be used alot is warm, but if its well ventilated then they get hot but no hotter than internals can get.

Options I ended up toying with are;

From Seagate

http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/external/usb ( USB2.0 only and slightly under your requested 300gb, max in this range is 250gb at present )

http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/external/usbfirewire ( funny enough datasheet says USB1.1 compatible, but data transfer will be much slower than USB2.0 ) reason I like this option was its stackable.

http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/portable/index.html ( smaller size than what you listed but, we use these in work and they do perform well for drives that will fit in the palm of your hand )

From Maxtor

http://www.maxtorsolutions.com/en/catalog/OTIII_USB/ ( I do like the One Touch Series )

USB2.0 PCI card http://www.verbatim.com.au/products.cfm?productID=KW2580E2 no doubt you can find some at a local retaliers in either 2 or 4 port versions.

another option is build your o... Read more

I recently purchased a Maxtor Basics 500GB external HDD and am just wondering what hard drives they use. I hope it is not the Seagate 7200.11 line since I have just been reading on their horrendous failure rates.

So, what I really would like to know is if Maxtor still produce their own hard drives or do they use Seagates? And if so, do I have a 7200.11?

I think the product number for the external HDD is STM305004N1AAAS-RK or STM305003EHM301-RK whereas for a 500GB 7200.11 it is ST3500320AS or ST3500620AS.

Please help

Answer:Maxtor Basics external hard drives

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxtor

"Maxtor Corporation was an American manufacturer of computer hard disk drives founded in 1982 and acquired by Seagate in 2006. As of December 2005, just prior to the acquisition, Maxtor was the world's third-largest manufacturer of hard disks. It now operates as a subsidiary of Seagate."

I would guess Seagate HDD.

edit: I should also mention I did not see any maxtor internal HDD on newegg.com, so I assume Maxtor only makes the case. Besides the point they are the same as Seagate now.

I'm shopping for advice fm this forum on external hard drive to provide for full system backups for my Dell XPS. I've read spec's on the Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital & Omega. My built in hard drive is 120gb so I probably wouldn't consider anything lower than 80gb. Any recommendations?

I hate to wander off track... but why external, why not internal? Faster and cheaper at least last time I checked.

As for brands, with hard drives, I am a big fan of buying the name that your confident in. If you check similar threads below, you will find most people suggest a hard drive based on their experiences, because the differences are small to non existant. I have been a Western Digital fan for many years. Since you have read specs, sounds like your way ahead of most of us already.

hi, does it really cost the earth to retrieve data from a HDD, mine started to make a grating noise yesterday and today it will read nothing, just keeps making a clicking noise, with a message on screen about an I/O fault..i used it for back-up, but in my case once i backed up what i wanted i deleted the original. is there anyway out...better half is on my case, all the holiday photographs were on it...thanks

Answer:Maxtor external drive knackered.

If you can get inside the case it might be worth checking the connections and trying another lead just in case. The companies that specialise in it tend to be pricey it depends what its worth. The IT engineer where I work had me send one away the other week, I'll ask him tommorrow for the address and cost etc and email you tommorrow with the details.

OS is XP home and thid morning took delivery of the above mentioned HD. Installed it with no problem and I successfully backed up my PC HD using Drive Image 7.Whenever I re-boot/start the PC with power on to the Maxtor drive the system boots up to the desk top but before the system tray icons appear I get a blue error screen with the message WORKER_THREAD_RETURNED_AT_BAD_IRQL. If I power off the Maxtor drive before re-booting, the system boots up with no problem. I find I can then power on the Maxtor and all works fine.Since I will only using the drive once a week to back up my internal HD I have decided to leave the external one powered off - no reason to keep it spinning for 7 days without use. Thus not really a problem if the drive will work when I want it to, but has anyone a clue why the error occurs.

I have a Maxtor One Touch 200GB external USB/Firewire drive. The drive has been working fine for months... well until now.

Windows no longer recognizes the drive under "My computer"
I have checked the device manager, it says device is working, I have checked the USB Hub controllers in device manager, "working fine".

If I press the "one touch" button, then my computer starts the Retrospect program, but that program doesn't recognize the drive is exists either.

I am using USB connection, as I don't own a FireWire cable, but if that might work, I'll go buy one. The drive is humming normal, lights on, but if I try to boot my computer with the drive on, then the computer "hangs" up, when I turn the Maxtor off, the computer continues the boot sequence.

I hope someone can help

Hello, and thanks in advance for any help that can be offered. I'm having problems with my Maxtor 40gb external hard drive. Its a couple of years old, worked fine for the longest. Got home yesterday from class, and on booting up my computer found the hard drive was not recognized. Over the course of the evening and throuhg subsequent bootups, I got the drive to show for a second or so, in which in the computer said that the drive was malfunctioning or something to that effect.
Only other apparent difference I can see involves the lights on the drive and power cable. The normally steady light is now blinking green repeatedly. Any ideas whats wrong and how to fix it? Also, in the event my drive is dead, any chance I can get the date off of it. I had alot of important data on it. I suddenly wish I'd bought that 250gb drive i considered last week. Again, thanks for any help anyone can offer!

Edit: In case no one notices my reply a message down, the drive is USB connection. Sorry about leaving that out

I picked up a OneTouch 4 (Maxtor External) but it will not run on one of my computers, the one I picked it up for. Error message reads that the equipment is not recognized and I am using Windows XP. I checked and updated the USB port and bus drivers. No problems and all is functioning. The external drive works excellently with all other computers I try it on. I phoned Maxtor and they place the blame on the computer and I find the support from them is not very good once you get past the endless sales screens, which is a shame as they offer a nice component. Given the poor support I thought I would throw this out to the forum with a prayer. Thanks in advance, anyone have a clue?

I am trying to use a Maxtor Hard drive as an external drive.

The problem is that the drive is not being recognized. The drive just spins, stops, spins, stops, etc. I have inserted the drive into my computer as a slave drive and it reads and writes fine.

I have made sure that the drive is set as Master when I try to hook it up with through USB in the external case.

I have also tried another drive in the external case and it reads and writes just fine.

Any ideas why my maxtor drive is not working with the external case?

Thanks

Answer:Using a Maxtor 60GB drive as an External

Some drives take more amperage than others the PSU in the external casing is very limited, some models are designed for specific hard drives and if a drive is installed that exceeds a certain current draw it does not function properly. It is also possible that you have an old casing that does not have a new enough bios to support the drive.

Good Luck

My Maxtor drive is not being recognized. The device manager shows a yellow exclamation point under USB Mass Storage devices and a code 10. I checked for solutions and the result was a message stating that the best driver is already being used. I am using a Windows Vista 64-bit operating system. The drive had been working until recently.

I had a problem with my HP a6700f Pavillion booting to the operating system when this drive was connected to a USB port on startup. I was told to disconnect it at startup to solve this problem and it did solve the problem. Now I can't get the drive to be recognized by Windows. It did recognize the drive when connected after startup but only after a few attempts. The drive is lit so I believe there are no power issues. I tried connecting to both a USB Hub and directly to the USB connection on the computer with the same results. Please help. Thanks.

Answer:Maxtor external drive not recognized

The only way you can solve this problem is to remove the drive from the caddy and hook it up as a slave.
If the drive works ok then you know its the caddy at fault.
If the drive is not recognised in bios/windows then the drive is at fault

Answer:Problem with Maxtor external drive

Hi there, due to my own experiences, Maxtor Harddrives are quite poor and cant handle much punishment such as hard resets etc. I personally would not try to sort it yourself as you have valuable data on it that cant afford to be lost.

Take it to a qualified technician to test and find out what the problem is.

If the hard drive is defunct, there are people who can attempt to swap the hard drive platter out of your old hard drive and in to an identical now hard drive.

Please note that this process is not 100% guarateed.

Sorry thats not much help and good luck

Hello All,

A friend of mine (honest ? I?m not just saying that to avoid censure for not backing up) has a Maxtor 1TB USB external drive that has stopped working properly. He does not think he has done anything to cause the problem.

Now when he connects to it it asks to be reformatted and further progress stops.

I have connected it to my computer with the same result.

Unfortunately on this disk are all the photograph of his son from birth to 3 years old as well as a lot more stuff ? so loosing it would be a disaster. His wife is a bit upset.

He has downloaded some software from Maxtor which appears to confirm that the files are there but will not allow them to be saved elsewhere.

Can anyone help? Any response will be appropriately acknowledged.

Answer:Can't access a Maxtor USB external drive

Hi,

Windows can be tricky with partitions just disappearing and thus the message that the disk is RAW and needs to be formatted.

You could try partition software in Windows to rewrite the partition table so that it will be recognized but it is not an exact science and there may be trial and error.

I think if it were me I would boot a computer from a Linux disc and see if it allows copying with no adjustments to the partition table. That way he has a copy of his files and then he can go ahead and try to get the external seen in Windows.

Booting from a Linux CD is fairly easy and there is no installation, you are running directly off the CD and memory with no changes to the installed OS. You just nee a blank CD.

Parted Magic is a decent version and will boot up to a Windows looking desktop with a My Documents icon up in the top left that should show your various storage devices. You can check if it sees the files on the external drive and then we can get the files copied. If it doesn't show the files then we can work on rewriting the partition table.

You would download PartedMagic and unzip the ISO file and then write the ISO file to blank CD/DVD using Imgburn's "Write Image File to Disc" option (or similar burning software if you have one you like). You must use the IMAGE file option to make the disc bootable. http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=61 Then boot any computer from the disc going with the default Run from RAM option. Open ... My Maxtor 40g external drive purchased from PCWorld 12 months ago with a 2 year guarantee. When the drive stopped working correctly and came up with an error messsage which meant it could not handle the income from my harddrive.I went into PCWorld and was told to get in touch with Maxtor which I did by email. It is now 2 weeks since Maxtor sent me a questioner which all it was doing was asking me if I had connected the external hard drive to the USB2 port which I did 12 months ago. I am still awaiting a desision from them. Surely when you get a 2 year guarantee Maxtor should honour the guarantee without all this trouble & replace the drive. Your comments please.

Answer:Maxtor external USB2 drive.

I agree if the drive is at fault then they should refund or replace without any fuss but they will want to verify that is its a prob with there hardware first a pain I know but thats how it is. Maybe its time to start emailing them on a daily basis too often companys are willing to forget there customers don't let them. Maybe this thread is more one for the consumerwatch forum good luck

I really screwed something up. I've been trying to transfer files from my PC to my Mac using my Maxtor. The Max worked fine with the PC for months. I was able to transfer over some files. Then, when I thought I was done transferring, I tried to install the Max onto my Mac. This didn't work at all.

I tried to hook the Max back up to the PC, and it didn't recognize the drive. Well, it saw the drive and said it worked fine, but it wouldn't write to it -- apparently because it was Mac-formatted. I refomatted it, moved some files onto it, and then hooked it into the Mac. Then the Mac couldn't read it. When I moved it back to teh PC, the PC can't read it.

Now, when I run disc manager, the Max does not appear in the top panel. It appears in the lower panel, with no letter assigned to it, and it is "unallocated". If I check properties, PC says the Max is working. But it wont let me reformat it. (That option is gone.)

Any thoughts?

i am looking at the above external and want to use it ghost my notebook.

My toshiba is pentium 4, intel pentium 4, 40 gigs, 1.9 ghz.

The hard drive is one of the new models out and is 250 gigs and has the feature Lock Drive which is supposed to be a security feature if the drive is stolen.

I use symantec's Ghost to Image my drive and I can use a bootable disk for an external usb 2.0 in the event of a crash.

What I am wondering about is if anyone knows how the "lock drive " feature works.
I have been told that if it is like an encryption feature with a password that my bootable disk for the external drive will be of no use in a crash as I won't be able to get to the point of putting in a password.

Security of my external drive is important to me due to the nature of my profession and thus I am looking for a way to Image on the external but have it secure and yet be able to get to the ghost if the system crashes.

I hope that there are members that may be familiar with this model of Maxtor and will be able to comment.

I have looked at the 160 gig Western Didital external drive and was going to use cryptainer for security and that was when I was advised that I would not be able to access my ghost image in the event of a crash and so that is why i am asking if anyone knows what "Lock Drive" is?

Thankyou

Maxtor is drive G, shown on My Computer as a hard drive. Going to Properties/Tools I clicked on Check Disk, and checked the two boxes for a full check. I got the standard (hard drive) message that the check would not be carried out until I restarted the computer. I was puzzled at this as there are no Windows files on the USB2 drive, but restarted the computer.Nothing happened. The computer just booted up as normal. Tried agin, again, no result. I then tried without checking the two boxes and got something called a "Phase 1" message. But I want a surface check and a report. How can I carry out a full ChkDisk on this external drive, please?

Does anyone know how I can resolve the issue of not being able to see my Maxtor One Touch II external drive on my recently upgraded PC to Vista. Seem to be able to see the drive on XP Pro.

Answer:External Maxtor One Touch II drive and Vista

1) Dumb question but have you installed any drivers you may need? 2) Do other USB/Firewire devices show up if you plug them in?3) If it's plugged in via usb, try firewire, or vice versa4) go to start->run (or windows key+r) and put in compmgmt.msc then go to drive management to see if it's listed there, without a drive letter, if it is, you can right click it and assign a drive letter to it.5) None of that works, I would suggest speaking to Maxtor tech support.

My Maxtor Onetouch II external drive is 1.5 years old. All of a sudden two days ago it stopped working. The drive used to show up as F in my computer. In other words, the computer seems to see the drive, but does not give it a drive letter. What would do this and how can I fix the problem?

Finally got the okay from my wife to purcahse a new computer - Gateway but its new and is a pretty nice machine with some of the upgrades I used.

I had a Maxtor 3200 External drive on the old (Slowly dying) computer and was using it as a backup drive. I have been trying to connect it to the new computer. It does not read at all though.

IT shows "the files is corrupted and undetecable." What is perplexing about this is that one day ago on the old computer it was fine. It is backup files but it does have some important family photos which is why I haven't tried to format it.

I am running:

Vista Home Premium
Gateway GT5426E
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ 2.6 GHZ
RAM 2.0 GB

Anything I can try to access this without paying for it or reformatting it

Answer:Maxtor 3200 100GB External Drive - Not showing up

file recovery tools

Techspot provides links to shareware and freeware for file recovery

Near the top of the welcome screen: dowloads ! file management ! recovery tools

So far I have not found anything that is totally free. I have bookmarked www.acronis.com for a 15-day free trial that claims to set up a 1-cylinder partition for storage of lost files found by it. This amounts to about 7.8MB (their estimate). Most shareware will display lost files detected by the program, but you pay to activate the recovery function. Other shareware limits the size of file recovered.

My Seagate 500Gb external drive is no longer recognized, its an unknown device-how to replace the small circuit board inside the external hard drives casing, which connects the psu and 27 pin (sata?) cable to the hdd? I think the board is the cause for the device not being recognized. The drive has stopped functioning, although it whirrs and its light comes on every single time I connect it to the pc. The drive and its content do not show..in devices I have an unrecognized device, and many usb devices that shouldnt be there. I found out that moving the usb cable gently at the hdd connectors end has helped show the drives content in the past, but now its not working or showing anything at all, so I think the circuit board inside the casing (that connects the hdd to the usb and power supply) may have been the problem from the start. The drive connects with a standard psu and 27 pin connector, which I think is sata.

My external hdd looks like it has a smaller version of the connection within the blue circle here (this is what the circuit board connects to), but everything else in this shot is missing (since this pic is from an internal I found off the net, not my external):

As seagate are unlikely to send me a new replacement circuit board for the external so that the hdd might function once more, I am wondering if its possible to make the hdd work on any desktop as an internal hdd? I know I can get 27 pin to usb cables, but that still leaves me needing to provide power to... Read more
