External Hard Drive Problems (help pls!!) (details inside)

Question: External Hard Drive Problems (help pls!!) (details inside)

Hi, I have a LACE 500 gb, external hard drive that I purchased for myself to help with the memory space on my laptop.

Anyways, a few minutes ago, I plugged it into my laptop via the usb cord and waited for it to boot. It started booting up, and then suddenly when it was loading in the Autoplay, it was taking forever at a certain folder and started making a clicking noise. I canceled the Autoplay and opened up My Computer to get the drive from that area. I click on the H extension, open up the hard drive and I am searching to get a picture that I want that's in a folder. I click on it and it takes forever to load, making that clicking noise and then finally it opens. Everything is taking forever to load, and when it's loading, it makes the clicking noise in my external hard drive.

The other day, I was carrying it, and it fell out of my hand but I wasn't high so it didn't fall from a high distance. I thought it was fine, because I recall using it previously before my attempts today. So I have no idea what's wrong with it. When I click on the image itself, it opens up fine in the Windows Viewer, and doesn't do any clicking noise whatsoever. It only does it, when it comes to folders.

It is opening up, but it's taking FOREVER and it's making an annoying clicking noise. Can anyone tell me if they've experienced this before and what they did to fix the problem?

Thank you and look forward to the response!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello every one.I am having a very wierd issue with my hard drive dissapearing.

When I Run a specific Bukkit Minecraft server (I have MANY servers with the EXACT same configurations and plugins;none of these have this problem) which is on my E Drive (Which is not a partition of my c drive)
my C drive usage will start having 100% usage spikes and after a few seconds the C drive stays at 100% usage
and then the E drive dissapears and won't reappear on the list until I restart the computer

P.S. When Firefox is open Firefox seems to be using the disk at 100% but when fire fox is closed the System process seems to be using the disk (or System Host (Peer Networking)Sometimes)

Can somebody please tell me what this piece is called my hard drive stopped working and I believe it's because of this motherboard type thing inside my external hard drive much appreciated thank you.

Answer:Inside components of an external hard drive?

that is the chipset of an external enclosure, it doesn't have a specific name as all enclosures have their own (and each is different when you change model) and you can place the hdd in a new one if that is broken.

What makes you think that the chipset is broken?

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and post that It was working fine without any issues. I have two external drive connected to it.

1. 1 TB Iomega powered drive. - now RAW
2. 2TB seagate external drive.

The 1tb drive suddenly became RAW and I wasn't able to access it. before it happened, I had removed some virus detected in the drive by the AVG antivirus. Post that once or twice it got disconnected and after that the drive became RAW. I understand the file system might have got corrupted since couple of times my system faced powercuts and before I could shut it down the system cut off from electricity as my UPS died on me.

I haven't formatted the disk at all, as I have all my important data in this HD as it was my backup drive for office and personal use.

Disk Management: shows the drive is RAW but a healthy Partition.

I opened the hard drive casing, tried connecting the drive directly to the internal sata cable but the same didn't read even then and still shows as RAW drive. I got a Storite USB to SATA adapter and tried that, the drive is now running fine(as it sounds) with intermittent kind of noise (clicking etc.,) for sometime and then disappears. After directly connecting the drive atleast the below softwares are able to read the data in the drive but unable to recover it.

I have tried recovering data using the below softwares.

1. EaseUS DAta recovery - took too much time to complete reading - 17% in more than 24 hours- stopped it.
2. M3 DAta recovery - tried fixi... Read more

Answer:External 1TB hard drive(Iomega - seagate inside) RAW drive - HELP

My recommendation is to use [email protected] Recovery Pro. I had a drive fail a while back (same "raw" situation) and of several data recovery apps, this was the only one that was able to recover most of the files and folders. It took nearly a day to do the in-depth scan, but it was worth it in the end.

I apologize for the brief title and for this being in the wrong category if it is.

I recently purchased an 8 bay external hard drive tower (similar to a Drobo). I have 4 external drives I removed from their enclosures and installed in the tower. When I installed 4 of the hard drives my computer only recognized two of them.

I went into my disk management and assigned a drive letter to the 2 drives it did not recognize. When given the option to format them, I chose "no" because they contained data.

Windows now sees the devices with a drive letter, but each time I double click on that drive it tell me I need to format it before use. If I do so, I will loose the existing data.

I have downloaded a trial of a data recovery software and it sees the data that is on the disk (don't ask me how).

How do I get the data off the drive without formatting the disk?

Please help. This is my life's work.

Thank you.

ok, 3 days ago my computer was working completely fine. that night i downloaded a zip file for a video. the next morning my comp told me that i needed to install "important updates" [which i think was just the windows sp2] and when the computer restarted i needed to install the latest version of java so i let that install and update.

then after all the updates were installed my computer started acting weird. i couldnt open pages like myspace.com, socialvibe.com, or my online school which is flvs.net, i also can't open pages where there are multiple images. i've tried to uninstall everything that updated so it was back to the way it was, but my browsers are unable to download and they're still unable to open myspace and the other sites. i use opera as my main browser, firefox when opera doesn't work, and chrome as my last resort. but i also have safari and IE installed but im unable to use them

i've tried to do a system restore to 3 days ago but it says the only restore point was 8/24/09 at 10:24 am, so that wont work.

so is there a way to make my computer work normally again? all i really want is to be able to download again and open the webpages b/c i REALLY REALLY need my school page to open any help will be much appriciated

I have suddenly started to have numerous problems with my computer. here are the details of those problems (as best as I can describe in this frustrated state):

1.) cannot access task manager

2.) my computer keeps telling me that one of my drives has absolutely no space(which is not true). This problem is preventing me from being able to download norton anti-virus 2006, even when I try to select another drive to download to.

3.) some websites are suddenly not appearing correctly.

4.) When I try to go through the process as described on this forum to search my computer and remove some of the possible problems, I run into trouble every single step of the way. This includes when trying use any of the virus/spyware search programs. Likewise, I cannot even download hijackthis.

As a result, I have no idea where to even begin in fixing this problem. Any help will get immensely appreciated.

I reinstalled Windows 7 yesterday. Upon reconnecting another drive which contained my personal files from a previous installation, the startup took ages and the drive became inaccessible after I logged in. I have two partitions on this drive, one containing my files and one containing old program files. The drive containing program files can be accessed just fine.

Here are some observations, details and steps I took so far:
The drive IS accessible through Linux. In fact, all (or most) of my files are intact.
chkdsk /r on Windows results in 10% read of the USN Journal, then fails at step 3 of 5. chkdsk /f fails at step 3 of 3, same issue with the USN Journal.
Right clicking on the "Local Disk" (it used to be called Files) and going to properties is so slow that I'd just stick with the command prompt.
It's an NTFS drive at 2.5 TB. Not very old.
This is not a driver issue, since half the drive managed to be recognized. Drivers were also update on reboot and that didn't help.

So my questions are as follows:
Am I in for a complete reformat? I have over 400 GB of personal files, and I made the mistake of not backing them up as time went, so I'd try and avoid reformatting at all cost. If it's absolutely necessary, I can try and back up everything useful.
Would this be a bad sector issue, or a USN issue. If it's an USN issue, is it safe to rebuild a USN Journal on this drive using fsutil, since the old one refuses to be read?

Now two things I must ask is what have you got set as boot device in the BIOS and is the large drive visible in diskpart?

Hey Guys, first things first. I had an old hard drive from a crapped out laptop. My uncle gave me an USB Hard drive converter(unsure on it's brand, after it worked i threw out the box). Problem is that I used it several times between a mac and a pc(school and home computer) and now it give me an I/o error when I try to copy stuff and says it can't find the item when I try to delete something. I tried reformatting(all this is on a PC BTW). I tried plugging it into a mac at school, but it wouldn't show up as connected.

I just realised that I had a driver cd for it, but I have lost it and cannot find it(too many CD's to keep track of, lol), I was wondering if there was anything I could do to fix this problem. It is a fujitsu, 30 GB hard drive(though it when I was using it, it showed as a 20 GB) I would prefer not to have to buy a new adapter or hard drive. I would just like to use this, to store all my music on, because the hard-drive on this computer(it's only 40GB getting a new one soon) is getting cluttered with music.
Now for my second problem, which isn't really my problem at all, but I digress. My friend was using her microphone(on an XP Home) and half way through her conversation it cut out. I have got her to check all her sound settings, no low sound settings on her computer. She has tried recording messages but nothing happens as if a microphone is not plugged in. I gave her my microphone to try out with no avail. I had a feeling that it... Read more

I have Windows XP and Linux dual booted. My External 400gig Hard drive in it's own case that's plugged into a USB slot on the back of my computer. It is formatted fat23. It can be seen and written to in both XP and Linux no problem. I installed the earlier Windows 7 build a while back and couldn't see the files on it. It said it was empty. Well I thought maybe they didn't have that sorted out yet.. But now even with the Beta 1 installed, it still says it's empty. I know for fact it's not. Anyone with some ideas?

So about a month ago i was using CCleaner and accidentally removed explorer.exe and a few other important...things(?). A friend gave me a copy of explorer.exe and i tried reinstalling it. nothing worked so i just installed a new windows XP professional.  All was fine except i was having problems with my music(and im sure other files) on my external hard drive.  Every time i tried to open a music file and play it with either windows media player or VLC player, i would get the blue screen of death. The screen said i had a BAD_POOL_CALLER or something like that. The technical info for this was: *** STOP: 0x000000c2 (0x00000007, 0x00000C3E, 0xE1747501, 0xF5FFACA8) I wasnt really sure what to do so i downloaded driverscanner 2009 and updated windows fully as to get the newest versions of all drivers. Once, again nothing worked so i decided to change from FAT32 to NTFS. I didnt know what it would do but it seemed to make sense to me. Once i changed my external to NTFS, i got a new blue screen of death(yippy!) that now says something like IRQL not_less_or_equal . Im not sure what the technical info is but im sure i can reproduce the blue screen if necissary.Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi there,
I wonder if anyone can help me? I have had a plug and play external hard drive (Iomega) for a year and had no bother with it what so ever. I use it purely to store photos. I plugged it into my netbook the other day to add some more photos to the drive and it just wouldn't come up. It wasn't in 'my computer' either. Yet when I click on the safely remove hardware button in bottom right of computer screen it is there so the computer obvisouly knows its plugged in. It doesnt make the sound anymore that it used to make when you innitially plug it in. I have tried all three USB ports and non of them work. Any ideas how I can find it on my netbook? Thanks, Cheryl.

Answer:External Hard Drive Problems

Test it with WD diagnostic software to se if it has failed (or starting to fail). You need to download & install WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostic: http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?lang=en

The software is Windows only, so you'll need to install it on your Windows PC to test the drive.

Hello
I did post about this a few days ago, but things have moved on since then so I thought to port another thread.
The problem has to do with my external hard drive.
The drive appeared in my computer but when I tried to access it, there was apparently nothing on the drive, though it worked fine on my wifes PC.
I tried using a different usb port, I wanted to try a new usb cable but didnt have one.
I had a rootkit which was affecting a physical drive, but I got rid of that and still the drive wouldn't function.
I have just switched to another drive, as soon as I fitted it it was detected and I could access it, but I was told to reboot my system or it might not work properly, I did this, but after re-booting allthough the drive appeared in my computer and everything was visible on it, I could not delete files, nor could I transfer files onto it, I kept being told that the specified file could not be found.
Any suggestions please?
Thank you.
Richard

I've been trying to use a 40 gig Maxtor drive to transfer data between an old laptop running windows 98, a Mac G3 and my newer computer running XP Pro, SP2. (Board:K7S41GX 1.0 / 1.67 Ghz. AMD Athlon XP / 1 Gig. Ram.)
It's housed in a Cliptec ZE-351 USB box and formatted with the FAT 32 file system.
Everything works fine in both Windows 98 and also on the Mac running OS 9.2 but the drive can't be accessed in Windows XP.
XP acknowledges when the drive is plugged into the USB port but does not show the drive in the explorer window.
Partition Magic does show the drive as being un-allocated space and inaccessible.
It also returns error codes while trying to format or partition the drive.
I've taken the drive out of the box and connected it as a slave to my computer running XP and formatted and partitioned it using Partition Magic.
Checked it for errors. None found.
Put it back in the USB box and it's right where I started.
Since there's obviously nothing wrong with the drive itself nor the IDE to USB converter in the external case since they work perfectly on the other two systems I am assuming there must be some sort of driver issue within Windows XP itself.
I have re-installed the USB drivers, run Registry Mechanic, re-installed the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers and am on the verge of tossing the thing outta the window.
If anybody has any ideas of how to get Windows XP to recognize this drive it would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

With the drive connected as slave, instead of using Partition Magic try using XP itself to set up the drive, although it can't format a partition larger than 32GB as FAT32. Alternatively, boot with a Windows 98 "boot floppy" and partition/format the whole drive as a single FAT32 partition - this is how I formatted a hard drive that was subsequently used in a USB 2.0 enclosure with Windows XP.

I have a Archos External USB hard drive that was working fine on two of my computers until yesterday. Now my computers won't recognize that it is connected. It sounds like the drive is powering up ok, but it isn't showing up under My Computer. Does anyone have an idea of what the problem could be and how it can be fixed? Both computers use Windows XP.

Answer:External USB Hard Drive Problems

By definition, it sounds like a hardware problem with the drive or its interface electronics, since it affects 2 different PCs. Power supply OK?

Hello all!

I purchased a 320GB external hard drive about two weeks ago. It has worked fine until I decided to download and install Diagnostic program that is specifically for it. While the diagnostic program was running, I went to sleep. When I woke up, it says it found nothing wrong, but now my computer sorta no longer recognizes it. For example, It have a letter, and I can see the files on the hard drive, but they won't recognize the programs that I have installed on my external hard drive, and neither would anything I run on my computer.

I have just bought an HP Pavillion 6551 Laptop, pre-loaded with Vista.I am getting used to the quirks (there are quite a few!!), but the one that I am struggling with is that none of my external IDE hard drives seem to register in my explorer.I hear the familiar connection chime when i plug the USB in, but that is as far as it goes to install and make the drives visible.Okay, it could be one specific make, but it happens (or doen't happen) on all 3 different makes..... help! Thanks

start-control panel-admin tools-computer management-storage-disk management and you should be able to see the drives. Right click on a drive that is 'hidden' and select change drive letter/paths...select any other letter preferably from the end of the alphabet..press ok and the disk should appear in my computer..try another letter if it is still hidden.G

Hi There,
This Is Sort Of A Software Problem But Connected With Plug And Play. I Recently Purchased A "Newlink" 3.5" External Hard Drive Enclosure. Popped In A Hard Drive, Connected The IEEE 1394 Firewire Lead And The Drive Sprung To Life And Appeared In Explorer, I Can Drag And Drop No Probs, I Was A Happy Man!

Also In The Box Was A Disc Containing "Syncquick" Software To Automatically Back Up My Files. However Even Though The Box Says It Is Compatible With Windows 98/ME/2000/And XP I Am Getting A Windows "16 Bit Subsystem "Error Message And The Installation Will Not Continue (See Enclosed Screenshot)

I Have Tried The "Newlink" Website (www.newlinkproducts.co.uk) And There Is No Contact Information For Support, I Have Also Tried To Google "Syncquick" But This Also Seems To Have Little Presence On The Net.

Does Anyone Have Experience With This Software Or The Error Message?

Thanks,
Steve.

Hello,I am having trouble with my external hard drive that I connect through my USB port. My computer sometime doesn't recognize it. Sometime it works for a few minutes but then restarts like I unplugged it then plugged it back in (I know this because the window asking me what I want to do with this device appears). Other times it works fine for hours. This has become extremely annoying because I keep all my music on the hard drive. iTunes doesn't save the library when it expectingly quits and I then have to reload all my songs (which takes quite a while). My suspicions lie in the USB or my computer more then the hard drive. About a month ago my computer stop recognizing my iPod; it sees it as an external drive and I haven't found a solution for that either. Also, occasionally I get a pop up stating that the connected device will work faster if I connect it to a USB 2.0 port. Well, I only have 2 USB ports and both are 2.0.Heres what I'm running:Dell Inspiron 8600Windows XP Home EditionMaxtor Hard Drive in an i-rock HDD 3.5" enclosure  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

So Ive hunted around and cant seem to find an answer to this. Ive got a WD External hard drive been working fine until it started saying it needed scanning and checking or something like that however when i clicked yes it wouldnt let me, so that carried on and now I have a big problem.

When I plug my hard drive in it makes the usb connection noise but no hard drive in My Computer. So I would have a look in computer managment its there but as:
Disk 1
Unknown
298.09 GB
Not Initialized

but it wont let me initialize it because of a I/O error. Ive uninstalled drivers still no help.

Also its not listed at the top where it says volume, layout, type, file system etc. Only at the bottom where it is Disk 0, Disk 1, CD-ROM 0

Please help I have 1000's of photos on there I just dont want to lose.

A year or so ago I bought a 400GB external hard drive. For about the first 7 months it worked like a treat and I never had any problems with it. Then all of a sudden I started to get problems when trying to start it up. I wrote to the people that I bought it from, and they sent me a new power supply. They assured me that this would fix the problem. Sure enough they were right and the drive worked fine again without any loss of data. A couple of months later the same problem happened again and I decided to just buy a new caddie/case rather than write to the seller again. This time I went for one that was quite expensive and once again the problem was solved. I have now had it for over a year and there seems to be a problem again although this time it isn't the casing. I have tried a new case which didn't work and I put another hard drive in the caddie and it works. This has brung me to think there is a problem with the hard drive. When I turn it on I get a F:/ drive appear whereas before, when it worked, I would get 2 partitions F:/ (about 300GB partition) and G:/(about 100GB partition). If I right click on the F:/ drive and go to properties it tells me that the drive has no used space and no free space. When I double click on it, it tells me that the drive needs formatting. If I do go in to the format screen it tells me the drive is 250GB. On the hardware side the drive is spinning and there are no clicking sounds. Hi,

I'm trying to use my external hard drive but for some reason the computer doesn't recognize. I tested it on my personal computer and in my work computer, but in both cases I can't access its data.
Actually the hard drive is listed in the Device Manager and in the Properties it's informed that it's "working properly". However, when I try to access through My Computer the message I receive is asking to format the drive before using.
I have lots of important information in this drive. Does anyone know what is the problem, how to fix it and how to retrieve the data?

Thanks in advance,

Ana

Answer:Problems with external hard drive

Seems to me the MBR / FAT / Partition table is not recognized as valid.
On what OS did it work before?

Your data most likely is still on there - so thread carefully. Never write to the disk only read, copy and migrate data to a different disk.

There's a tool called Partition Recovery which scans the disk for the start of disk partitions. It can recover the parition and allows you to rescue the contents by copying it to a different disk.

Within the past couple of days, I can click "computer" and look at my drives, and the external shows up.. but doesn't have the blue bar underneath it.
Also when this happens and I unplug the drive, that drive letter continues to show up, I can access it, but no data shows up, and I can even go into properties of the drive.

I have tested the hard drive on other people's computers, and not a single problem.
So from that I assume the problem lies somewhere with my computer, but I don't have a single clue.
I reinstalled my motherboard's USB 3.0 drivers, and installed the 64-bit driver from WD, but video/music playback is still failing.

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum, and I really need help... I have been searching the internet for weeks. I can't seem to find anything to help me, so I have come here in the hopes that I might find some form of anything....

I had an external drive. The case failed, so I took the drive out and got rid of the case. Now, I got a new case, and I put the drive in. I plug it into my computer, and my computer tells me that a drive has been installed. However it does not show up in my computer, or disk management. It does, however, show up in the device manager. There is not a yellow ! next to the device, and it says that it is working properly. What should I do? I would really prefer not to have to format it if there is a way around that, but if I HAVE to, I will to gain use of the drive back.

If this means anything to anyone, I am using a Macbook Pro with bootcamp installed, with windows XP pro with SP2. Any help would be completely appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hey everyone, I have a WD 320gb external hard drive (WD3200E035-00) and when ever I plug it into my computer it freezes... can you please suggest me all the things I should check to find what is causing this? Thanks.

Answer:External Hard drive problems D:

Hello Smile,

You might check to see if you have a option in your antivirus program's settings to see if you may have an option to scan USB, external, or removable devices when connected enabled. If so, this may cause your computer to temporarily freeze up like this since the external drive is being scanned. Disable or turn off that option to see if that may help.

Hope this helps,

I have had an external Toshiba hard drive connected to my new computer for over a month now. However, today I cannot access the external HD - it's not even showing in "My Computer" anymore! I've tried everything I can think of and all it's doing is flashing red and blue at me! I have the following computer:
Windows Vista Home Premium on
AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 4000+ 2.10ghz
2046 MB Ram
NVidia GeForce 8600 GT

the external drive is a Toshiba 160GB External USB HDD which is just over a year old and worked fine with my Windows XP computer.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling and still nothing - I have a ton of data that I can't afford to lose on the external HD. I hope somebody can help.

Answer:Problems with external hard drive

Firstly you need to confirm that the usb port is working correctly by trying something else in the port.
If the port is ok then remove the drive from the case and hook up as a slave in your pc and see if you can access the data.
If you can then you know its the external case that is at fault.

Sorry if a thread already exists. I'd looked for one similar to my problem, but couldn't find one that exists that isn't closed...

With that being said, I am running a Vista Home Premium 32-bit & the External Hard Drive I'm having problems with is a Seagate 250GB. The box it was in says 'Expansion'. I've looked over on Seagate site & found no help.

Here's the problem- 2 days ago, my external wasn't showing up on my computer at all. After searching & following tips here & there on the web, I finally got it to show up. I ended up doing the following: 'cmd' as Administrator:
"chkdsk x: /f /r" and press "Enter," substituting "x" with the letter of the USB drive.
From there it scanned the drive & it showed up. The next problem was no permissions to move anything or access anything on the drive. Again, I typed the following commands as Admin. in the command prompt:
cacls H: /E /T /C /G Administrators:F
takeown /f H: /r /a
This gave me 'some' permissions, but not all. I still am finding myself having to manually click on properties to some folders to try to get ownership/ gain permissions. However, with some I get the following error codes:

Other files or folders I try to move, I get the following error:

Answer:External Hard Drive Problems

Okay, people, I hope this helps others who may have similar problems.
After trying & trying to recover my data off my external & getting errors as mentioned above, here's what is currently working for me:
I have my external wrapped in a towel on an icepack to keep it very cool.
I have a second external plugged in. I am copying one folder at a time over to the other external. When I start getting the I/O error, I shut off the faulty external that I'm copying my data from & let it rest for 10-15 min. After it's had that rest, I turn it back on & either copy the rest of that folder over or start on the next folder. Keep doing this until you can recover as much data as possible. This should work.
Now, granted, I'm not able to recover 100% of my data, so far, I'm able to recover about 80-90% of it, though & most importantly- a lot of the data that I wasn't able to recover onto my laptop before is copying over to the other external without problems.
I hope this helps any of you out there that are looking for help. This will also save you some moolah & if you're able to get most of your data copied this way, that's better than nothing, right?
If, in the event there is some data that you absolutely have to have that you can't recover after this, then I'd recommend taking it into a data recover expert or downloading a program to attempt the recovery. My guess is you're still going to want to keep that faulty external drive cool & give it rests if you can... Read more

I have a Western Digital external hard drive It lights up but doesn't sound quite normal and it not recognized by my Win7 computer.

I fear the worse. Any thoughts on how I might try to recover the data?

Thanks

SM

Answer:External Hard Drive problems

When you say not recognized, you mean it is not given a drive letter?

If that's the case, then open up Disk Management and scroll down through the "drives" to see if it is listed near the bottom. If it is, then see if it will let you assign a drive letter. If that work, you should be OK.

If you don't see it in Disk Management, then the next time you boot, do so with the drive connected, go into the BIOS setup screens, and see if the BIOS sees the drive. If that doesn't see it, then there's no way to mount it to get the files off.

However, if the BIOS does see it, then you can at least try accessing it following the info below ...

Since your data was on a Windows partition, based on my experience at doing
this successfully, my suggestions are the following:
[NOTE: If your PC has a working copy of MS Windows on it, skip to step 4]
1) Connect your drive to the PC.
2) Download and install the trial version of RecoverMyFiles from Runtime
Software in MS Windows.
3) Right-click the RecoverMyFiles shortcut and select "Run as
Administrator"
4) Select the option to Recover a Drive
5) You will get a list of drives, scroll down to find the one for your
drive.
If it's shown in the list, then continue; else, you're done and won't be
able to recover the files...
6) Select Automatic Driver recovery, press Start button
7) It will run for a while but when done, will show a directory tree in the
left pane. Do NOT interrupt it.
8) When done, browse the folder... Read more

Hi, new to the forum, first post.

I recently bought an external USB hard disk enclosure from E-Bay, and also a second-hand 120 GB Maxtor Hard Disk.

I connected it all up and hooked it up to my PC, which recognised it and installed the correct drivers.

All weel and good so far, but.....

When I check in "My Computer", it only lists my original hard drive.

I've had a scout about on various forums, and all advice seems to be: start -> control panel -> admin tools -> computer management -> disk management, and then format the drive.

When I follow this advice, "Disk Management" only shows my old HD, but when I check in: Device Manager -> Disk Drives, it shows the new USB drive, but I can't format it from here.

I've tried changing the jumper settings on the USB HD around with no joy.

I checked my old HD (which hasn't been touched since I bought the PC), and the jumper settings are set to "CS Enabled".

I'm running Windows XP (SP2).

So my questions are:

1) Can anyone help?
2) (Sorry if this sounds basic) Can I change the jumper settings on my original HD from "CS Enabled", to "Master" without any loss of data, fireworks etc.

Thanks.

Answer:External Hard Drive Problems

1. possibly.......... try hooking up the external HD to the internal cable as a SLAVE and format it from their?

2. Yes should be fine

I have a Logitec External Hard drive that I got while living in Japan. Today when I turned it on the lights light up but it makes this ticking noise and one of the lights flashes green. It's on but not running, and won't show up on my computer. Does anyone have any experience with this? Have I fried it? Will I be able to retrieve the data on it? Thanks for your help.

Answer:External Hard Drive Problems...

That ticking noise is typical of a failing, or failed, hard drive. Just like with regular drives that backups are there for when the fail, backup drives can fail just as well.

Hey, I have a Dell Inspiron 1505 laptop, which up until recently was working fine with all my peripheral devices. I have been using this external hard drive for some time now, although, thinking back, I did have this same problem with certain flash drives. The when everything is connected, it makes the sound like it recognizes the device, but then it does not show the drive under "My Computer" I have tried the hard drive on a friend's computer (Inspiron 1505 as well) and everything is working, so I know it is not an issue with the hard drive. I also know it is not an issue with the USB port because my mouse works in the same port, it has the sound, and the "safely remove device" icon is in the bottom right corner.

I'm stumped, and so are my friends. Any ideas?

Answer:External Hard Drive Problems

It could be something as simple as a mixed up registry entry. Try uninstalling all the USB drivers and let Windows reinstall them.

Answer:External Hard Drive PROBLEMS HELP!!!!

Well, if it's a minor thing. Just unplug the power adapter to kill all power to the device; although I usually don't recommend this, sometimes with technology, you just have to cut the cord.

Are you using a western digital media center hard drive (external)?

These weird files with unexplainable symbols appeared on my external HD today. Every time I click on one it disappears and when I drag a file from my external HD on to the desktop they will reappear. That is if the file will even go to the desktop. These files are [email protected]#!$# with me. If I drag a file from my external HD on to the desktop most of the time an error occurs and I am unable to do this. If I try to put one of these files into the trash the same error message occurs. Hey guys, I've been reading for hours upon hours on forums trying to find a fix to my problem but i just can't seem to. I think that my disk might actually be broken Anyway, I've got this WD External Hard Drive that I've been using for 3 years or so now. Last night I woke up to a crash and hard drive was on it's side. It didn't fall off of anything, just laying on it's side, but it was also in the process of playing a movie and the movie froze. I've tried everthing to get this to work again. The drive doesn't show up in My Computer, it shows up correctly under devices and printers, and then under disk management, I get this awful screen that is not allowing me to do anything. There is litterally nothing I can do to this under disk management to my knowledge. It recognizes there is a disk there, but it shows nothing where the space should be. The only option is to Initialize Disk which used to not be greyed out but now is. The Initialize Disk just came up with an error though (I think because the disk is not formatted).

If someone could PLEASE help me that would be so great. I would really prefer if I didn't have to lose all of the information because my entire graphic design portfolio is stored on there, but at this point, I just want it to work again.

EDIT:
I just wanted to add that I've read the stickie, but I guess I know way less than I should to be posting on these forums. I couldn't figure out... Read more

Answer:WD External Hard Drive problems

is 3 years still under warranty? If I remember right, WD has a 5 year warranty. They should be able to take your data off it and put on a new external/hdd.

However, if it is not under warranty, try breaking out the hard drive inside and try using it directly to your computer, not by usb.

You might just have damaged the sat to usb panel, not the drive. Hard drives can take quite a beating.

I'm starting to lose all hope for this, but maybe someone here can help me with this problem.

I have a Western Digital 250GB USB External Hard Drive. It's connected via USB 2.0, and I've not had any problems until yesterday/today.

I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, with all current updates. The computer is an HP Pavilion 515x.

My problem lies in the fact that up until yesterday, my hard drive worked flawlessly. At some point during the day yesterday, though, the hard drive stopped working, but I was away at work while it happened.

After an hour or so of working with it, I got it to work again. Problem solved, or so I thought.

However, at some point during the night last night, while I was downloading and updating some programs, it apparently ran into the same problem. Now, like before, when the hard drive is connected, I get the balloon "USB Device Not Recognized", and other times, it will say that it's been installed and is ready to use, but I can't access any of the files. Instead, it shows up as "Local Disk (G" in My Computer.

Opening it reveals nothing.

I went to it's properties and populated the drive, but it now says that it's either Not Applicable for Partition Type, or it'll show up with the main computer's drives, saying that the hard drive is merely 37 GB.

I'd really appreciate any help I can get, and if you need more information, let me know. I tried t... Read more

I just recently purchased a western digital my book essential edition and i'm haveing problems with it. It installs itself the first time you plug it in. i backed up a lot of my files onto it, the thing is, i was getting ready to format the hard drive on my computer, so i was stupid enough to just move a lot of the stuff to the external drive. Then, with my external drive still plugged in and switched on (but not copying or anything), the computer crashed. Now when i plug the drive in, the windows xp finds a "usb device" but can't find software to install it, and the light on the drive does not light up. I've tried it on several computers, same thing. i could just return the drive, but i need the data on it. i've already been told to take the drive out of the case and just plug it directly to the computer through IDE, but that voids the warrenty. can anyone here please help me here?

thanx in advance

The device manager recognizes a 'Mass USB Device' but 'My Computer' shows nothing - Except for one time in which it came up as H Drive, But when i clicked on it there were no files inside.

Interestingly, when the hard drive is in it's new enclosure it makes a clicking noise with the occasional beep, however if i plug it into the circuit Board that was in the Seagate casing it sounds 'healthy'. Is it possible the new casing is not compatible with my hard drive? ;/

As far as i know i have not banged/dropped the hard drive since removing from it's Seagate casing.

I would really like to rescue the hard drive if possible as it has a lot of files and music on it!

Thanks a lot for any help, I appreciate it!

Hello and thank you for reading this.As a new computer user of 6 months only (I'm 51),I have a problem when I transferred data from my c drive to my e drive. I successfully copied all my Windows Media Player 10 songs onto it with no problem. However, when I open up a few files to see if the tracks have copied over correctly,I find it all a huge mess and I don't know why.I can't always find a complete track listing in one place. Many files show the standard yellow file symbols and others have the WMP10 circular file symbols listing the individual tracks.I put rip all the cds in the same way,and correct them for spelling errors and mistakes afterwards.I guess this mess must start in the c drive. My questions are thus. 1.Is it possible to load the Windows Media Player 10 SP2 software directly into the e drive? 2.Would I then be able to copy over all my music files into the e drive with WMP10 already installed so that the transferred files slot themselves into position as per the c drive version? 3.Would I get the desired result of having all the stored information in the e drive as a 'mirror image' of that on the c drive? 4.If yes,how would I do it? If you could keep your answers straightforward and not technical,I would be obliged. Thank you very much indeed for any help and advice. I sure could use it!

Answer:External Hard Drive Problems.

If you have ripped them once to the hard drive, copying the whole folder that contains them should do the job for you.I don't think there is an advantage to installing WMP on the E drive.

Okay so, I've spent a few weeks trying to get this external hard drive to work and have gotten nowhere.

Here is a link to the specs for the hard drive.

I am running Vista 64-bit on a HP dv7 with a Core Duo @ 2.4 GHz and 4 GB of Ram.

Last Christmas I got this WD passport and at the time I was using my mom's macbook. The hard drive worked great on the mac, but before I went to college I got this new HP notebook. I downloaded to macdrive 7 and used that to get all the files on the hard drive onto my computer. After that I deleted everything that was on the hard drive, thinking that the action was necessary in order to re-format it for vista. Whether it was necessary or not, I figured and new format would just put the files on there that needed to be and let me go from there.

When I open up My Computer, the disk drive isn't there and when I go to computer management > disk management it says the disk is online but doesn't have a letter or anything. When the hard drive is plugged in, it slows the computer down A TON and all the programs stop responding, and the second you pull it out (unsafely) the programs are fine. Now, I actually did complete a format process with this hard drive, but even after that it is inaccessible. Okay, my external hard drives are messing up.

I have a Toshiba PH3100U-1EXB and it stopped working the day after I installed my second external hard drive, which is a WD My Passport Hard Drive.

Most of the time, the hard drive won't show up at all under "Computer", but a virtual disk thing does. Once, I somehow got it to work through the "Disk Management" part of "Computer Management", but it showed up as a RAW drive. From what I know, the only way to restore the drive was to format it back to NTFS, but it would mean erasing all of my data. I had about 580 GB of data on the 1 TB drive.

My computer crashed and I had to do a full system restore the month before, so I didn't have any backup copies of the files on the Toshiba drive.

So I used programs like Recover My Files, iCare, and Easeus Data Recovery Wizard to recover my files from the RAW drive. After that, I formatted the drive. It's now an NTFS drive. I tried to recover from the formatted drive, too, but nothing came up.

But then I couldn't "Safely Remove" it because it said that it was still running, even though all the programs are closed, according to Task Manager. So I just unplugged it.

The hard drive doesn't work at all now, even when I plug it into my laptop. Only a virtual disk (I shows up. I: doesn't even have any files on it and it says I should "Insert a disk", according to Windows Explorer/'Computer' folder.

So I ... Read more

I have succesfully used my external driver on my laptop for about 10 months, but i have been having problems with it the last couple of days...

When i plug it in, the "autoplay" thing starts scannin the folders really quickly... It used to take like 2 seconds, now it takes forever for it to go through... also the scannin always stops on the same folder (which in this case is "Matrix Trilogy" folder) so it will wait on that for a while and will eventually pass, and finish... Then i can open the harddrive and most of the time, as soon as i try to copy a file or open a folder, it will freeze...

Also sometimes it used to make alotta clickin noises....like it's being turned off and on...

Also, i see the "Delayed write failure" or something like that warning too..

I dropped my external hard drive on the floor (twice), and it stopped working.

i thought it may just be the case, so i took the drive to the nearest computer centre and asked if i could test it

it seemed to work fine on their computer (which looked like it was running XP), though there was something odd about the directory names (they seemed to all end in exe or something, but i'm not certain about this point). but i could access some files (images in my pictures folder), so it certainly seemed to be good enough

unfortunately, when i got it home, i'm having the same problems as before (i'm running vista)

when i plug it in, the little 'device found' icon appears, but no window

if i click on 'my computer', explorer hangs, and has to be shut down

if i then try and restart explorer, nothing happens (though explorer shows up as running in the task manager)

if i open any program which can browse through folders, this also crashes as soon i click on 'my computer'

if i restart the computer, it won't start with the drive connected, and this last time, even after the drive was removed, it repeatedly shut down during start-up, and gave a blue screen several times, telling me to consult technical help (it's possible these shut-downs were caused by overheating, but i don't know)

as such, i'm a little wary of even connecting it back to my computer, but i also don't want to just throw it away, when it does seem to work under certain circumstances

Answer:Problems with an external hard drive

You should start in Safe Mode with Command Prompt and run chkdsk /r /f on the drive. This will try to find problem and repair them if possible. If you hear any noise that is out of the ordinary for the drive i would think that you might have damaged the read/write head. Which would be real bad.

Thought to myself as it is Christmas, and as I have got a problem with a external hard drive for Christmas, but have solved it, I thought why not post a solution on this web page.

Not showing in Windows Explorer?

This happened to me. Click start, type Disk Management, then find your external hard drive (mine is 'ST 350041 2AS USB Device) usually it's in Disk 1, right click and select Mark As Active. Then to make it a D:/ drive or E:/ drive, click Change Letter Drive and change it from there.

Hopefully this will help users from both Windows Seven Forums and traffic from external sources (google, yahoo etc). Please leave 'Rep' if this worked for you. All the best, Edster.

it says it has 283MB free space (which i'd expect)
but when i try to delete something off it, it still says 283MB free.
i have tried restarting pc and unplugging the phd.
i did try a disk check, it says "the drive F: contains an invalid parametre"
and it also says it can only do the diskcheck in "read-only-mode"
i can't re-format cause i have no where for the files to go.
is there any-way to fix it?
oh by the way i have ran a disk check on it before this happened and it said something about corrupt indexes and clusters.

Pull the drive and connect it as an internal drive [make sure to set the jumper] See if you can format and access the drive now. If you can, you know the enclosure is the problem. If you cannot access the drive, then the drive has failed and the enclosure is ok.

Answer:External Hard Drive PROBLEMS!

Well, without certain scripts written in, my Linux/Windows machine wont see the drive for the other operating system, i.e Windows wont see linux drive and visa versa, so I suspect you need to do something there.

On the other hand, if is a new drive, then you will need to format it to see it. Right click on 'My Computer', click Manage. In there, you will see 'disk management', and should see the new usb drive. From there, right click on the drive and format/partition it as you want.

Hi Everyone.

I have a 1TB external hard drive which has always worked fine. About 3 hours ago I was watching a video file which was stored on the hard drive. The video suddenly froze up and my PC locked up. I had to re-boot and ever since then my PC is giving me hell whenever I try to access the drive. Half the time it doesn't even display the drive in windows explorer. When it does, it says that the drive has 0 bytes on it. I can't access disk manager, sometimes it tells me the drive is 'not accessible', when it does appear in the explorer it ends up crashing explorer whenever I try to access it.

I know the drive works because I can access it on my laptop. I've been on the laptop and deleted a few things in the hopes that freeing up an extra 100gb might appease it.

I'm in a pretty desperate situation here because I can't really do my work without access to that hard drive via my main PC.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bungeeman.

Answer:External USB Hard Drive Problems

You mixed a bunch of symptoms. Does the system work normally if you don't use the external hard disk? Is this just a single issue, or are you having general Windows issues.

Try this cleanup processif it's just a USB hard disk issue.

First step, Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Create a restore point and name it something like "Before USB Fix". This is to bail you out if something goes wrong during the following process and makes things worse.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG

-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------
REGEDIT4
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"

-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and se... Read more

Hey I just bought an external hard drive (Acomdata HybridDrive 2.5) and when I plug it in my Pc reads it fine and a new drive pops up in my computer. The new drive is not a external hard drive but a cd-rom drive.

Have any idea how to fix this?

Answer:External hard drive problems...

Did the drive come with drivers? Check their website for drivers or software that may be required.

What OS are you using?

Hi,
I am having some serious issues with my laptop. It started freezing randomly about a week ago and got so bad, I couldn't use it anymore. I thought I had a virus, but couldn't find it or fix it so paid a technician to fix it. He said he found a number of viruses, but was able to get rid of them ($200 later). When I got home, the problem was still there. I decided to re-format windows and thought all was good until it started happening again when I tried to transfer some files from my external hard drive. I started thinking that maybe it was the external hard drive that caused the problem in the first place. Is this possible? How do I know if the problem is with the actual hard drive or with the files that are on there? What should I do? I have scanned my computer with Norton, Adaware and AVG and no viruses are being detected. The freezing seems to happen when I'm doing something that uses alot of RAM. Is it possible that the viruses that the tech guy found have damaged my hardware?
The freezing doesn't bring up the blue screen or anything it just completely freezes - the mouse won't move and the keyboard in inactive. I have used the hard drives on two other pc's and a Mac, and it is fine. Sometimes it will freeze when I am using the hard drive directly (transferring files etc), and sometimes it just happens when I am doing nothing at all. It has happened once while it wan't even plugged in - now that's got me!
I have tried re-installing the USB drivers as well as the ha... Read more

Memtest86 - Download Page

click on the 3.3 bootable iso zip download, burn the iso (if youve never burned an iso image, then I'm sure you can find a tutorial on how to do it.), and set your bios to boot from the CD with that program on it. If it finds and problems, then it is because you have bad ram, and should replace it. Report back once youve done it.
