Can't defrag certain files - even in Safe Mode

Question: Can't defrag certain files - even in Safe Mode

I recently did a defrag on my laptop hard drive, and i noticed that i'm getting errors on the same files, saying that some files were unable to be moved.

Here's a log from when I ran it in regular Windows XP.
Code:

Any ideas on why this is happening and how to fix it?

Preferred Solution: Can't defrag certain files - even in Safe Mode

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My computer was running slow with the HD churning away, so I ran the anti-ware (Malwarebytes and Trend Micro) and found no infections.

Then I ran defrag, but had only 5% free space, so I deleted and moved files and got to 15%, but defrag runs for 10 minutes and declares itself done, but it looks like only about 20% of the drive is getting defragged and the rest is badly fragmented.

I ran CCleaner, chkdsk /r & /f, and went to run defrag in safe mode only to find trying to boot in safe mode causes the dreaded BSoD! But WinXP SP3 runs fine in normal mode!

Stop: 0X00000007E (0XC0000005, 0X80537009, 0XF7C5E3E0, 0XF7C5E0DC)

No hardware changes in more than a year, the last time I ran in safe mode was a couple of months ago to get rid of a nasty Trojan.

So, why will defrag not finish? Why does safe mode cause the BSoD?

FWIW:clearing up the HD space had reduced the HD churn.

Additionally:
I ran chkdsk /r in the recovery console and System File Checker, with no apparent change.

Answer:Safe mode causes BSOD; WinXP OK in normal mode; defrag not completing....

Running processes can cause this like Toolbars if you have toolbars I'd say remove them completely as they will conflict with I.E.'s toolbar as with other programs like defrag, ( to remove a program make sure it's not running then click Start/ Control Panel / Add-Remove Programs then restart the pc Always restart the pc after installing , removing , or updateing a program ). Then disconnect from the internet and right click on any icons next to the clock and click exit or end to stop them till your done doing the defrag. Then run cleanup disk and try to defrag. If no joy please post a HiJackThis log so we can see if there's other issues http://forums.techguy.org/malware-removal-hijackthis-logs/622404-please-read-here-first-before.html

i have just read in a thread that you dont need to defrag in safe mode in xp,this is new to me,why is this so?

Answer:defrag in xp,no need for safe mode?

you only ever needed to defrag in safe-mode if you had problems. XP just handles everything better than the old OS's you may find that you can continue working while it runs as well but this is probably not a good idea. personally i use Norton speed disk because I got used to it before i had XP but the XP defrag program is so much better than the old versions.

I was of the imnpression that, in safe mode, a machine should have no problems operating? my somewhat limited Del laptop is refusing to defrag in safe mode; the program itself will not open or run from either the main menue nor the shortcut on the desk top ; scan disc will run as will other programs and I can run defrag up to a point in normal mode; is this something I should be concerned about ; this laptop is really used now for "trying out" different things more than using for intensive main computer work; my intrigue is its non ability to even open the program while in safe mode; when I click on the program the egg-timer appears,...and that is all ;it just thinks, and thinks and thinks; I am not too worried, but wonder if anyone has any ideas about this?

After carrying out the above, i tried to defrag in safe mode but nothing happens, although, it will defrag in selective startup (clean boot). Is it normal, that it wont defrag in safe mode, some expert advice please.

Is there a way to perform a defrag in Safe Mode?

Answer:Defrag in Safe Mode

I know this isn't really a fix for why you can't get it to run in Safe Mode, but it's in the same topic:

The engineers who redeveloped the defrag system for Windows 7 posted a very detailed blog post on the "Engineering Windows 7" blog about this topic.  It is available here.

Given the NTFS file system's resiliency to fragmentation and the improvements to the defrag system, coupled with the automatic load-bearing and scheduling, Windows 7's defragmentation best practice is essentially hands-off.  It takes care of it for you.

Read the blog post for the great information, in fact the whole series of blogs is amazing.  I especially like the details about Aero Snap.

Answer:defrag in safe mode

Restart your computer then keep tapping the F8 key just before the Windows screen appears. You should be presented with a menu - use the Up/Down arrows to navigate and press Enter to select Safe Mode. You will then be in Safe Mode with a funny-looking screen but you should then be able to Start, All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/ Disk Defragmenter

My laptop was having problems defragging=the message i get is disk defragmenter could not start.
In addition I couldn't chkdsk= autochk is not available for raw drives.
I tried these steps so far:
1. Disk Defragment in Safe Mode
2. Register related DLL files
3. Add a new Disk Defragmenter
4. Reinstall the Disk Defragmenter Engine
5. Adjust Paging file size
6.entering BIOS and checking if the hard drive is recognized as NTFS didnt get an answer on that. ran hardrive self test results= 00 pass bios version F.12
7. virus scan with microsoft safety.live.com all problems fixed except one
8. Ran chkdsk in windows recovery mode used chkdsk /r

still got the same message when i ran defrag. I downloaded ccleaner and ran that. i then downloaded superantispyware and ran it and thats when all my problems began. When i ran the program i unplugged my cable modem so i wouldnt be on the internet while the program was running. i forgot to shut down my wireless button on my laptop and picked up my neighbors internet connection without realizing it. spyware ran and then it froze i manually shutdown my computer and restarted and ran the spyware again. a message came up saying it could not scan all files because it was reading directly from the disk. i deleted what it had picked up and restarted spyware when i noticed internet was running shut that down and continued scan. deleted all files when scan was down. rebooted and tried to install spybot. got a message saying files were corrupted to... Hi,

I've been trying to defrag my c:\ drive, and it has been screwing up a bit when booted normally (getting stuck on a certain percentage then locking-up the system etc) so I tried running it in safe mode. However, the defrag utility will not start no matter what I do in safe mode. Any suggestions as to how I can fix this problem?

Just recently when I go to open Word it doesn't open and asks if I want to open in "safe mode".

Also, when I went to defrag this morning, the message came back which said files cannot be defragged were; \Documents and settings\all users\.

Do you think the two are related? Did I do something in word that upset the program? Thanks!

Sometimes back I sent a query about defragging in W2K. I was advised to conduct defragging under safe mode. But even in safe mode defragging does not work. Any lights on what the problem could be?

Answer:Even in safe mode defrag does not function.

Have you used control + alt + delete to close any programs which are hidden? They shouldn't load in safe mode though. You might be able to try it through DOS, but it won't be such an advanced scan. I'm not sure if you can do that with 2k though.

I had to have the computer reformatted a few months ago, and now when I click on F8, I cannot enter safe mode. Nonetheless, I cannot also access system restore points, even though the computer shows available dates and points and what was accomplished on the date.

Without the files on the CD, (that were reinstituted from a Dell Win XP Home disk), I cannot add/ remove Windows options like Networking and Performance Tools and some other things.
Also, Disk Defrag does not work and CHKDSK alternatively boots up first sometimes yes (with a full disk check on C); and sometimes no (saying that CHKDSK is not set in Scheduled Tasks.) I originally had the problem when I tried to defrag or chkdsk the external hard drive that is usually always connected.

I have a lot of files I do not want to risk losing (saved a lot of C:/ to the external hard drive), but want to chkdsk and defrag all drives. I downloaded a third party program to defrag that works, but prefer Windows to the bloat. What to do?

I have a Dell XP400 Desktop PC that I bought probably 5 years ago. I was having problems with my windows freezing and searched and thought I'd better defrag my HD. Tried that, but got a message that said to either do a CHKDSK or SCANDSK. After doing the CHKDSK, it was a read only and so after more searching I discovered I needed to use the command CHKDSK/F instead. I did this and it still didn't help because of some message about the volume.
Trying to start my XP Pro into Safe Mode by pressing F8 and even after continuing to press the button over and over, it didn't help and went to the Welcome screen. Then tried staring it again, but held the button in and it still went onto boot to the Welcome screen. I bought software yesterday called System Suite 11 since it had a defragger on it and it said to uninstall Spy Doctor. I don't have that and searched and still didn't find it. Any help would truly be appreciated.

Answer:Unable to Defrag or start in Safe Mode

One reason for a failure to defrag is shortage of hard disk space - how much do you have?

Hi all...I'm new here and I'm so glad I found this site. Please help!First of all, here is my information:Computer: AMD Athlon XP 2500+1.85 GHz, 1.25GB of RAMWindows XP Platform Win32(Please let me know what else you need). Here are my problems.1.)  When I go to certain web sites, for instance, when I log into myyearbook.com or myspace, the graphics do not fully load on the page and my playlist on my home page says there are no songs to play. There aren't any red X's, there's just a few things that load on the page. Before about a week ago, everything loaded just fine. I'm currently using Firefox but I've also tried this on IE and have the same issues. Plus the pages load VERY slow. Also I am unable to send Yahoo mail with and without attachments.2.) When I click on a link (for instance, if I did a google search on something and a list of links come up) it takes me to a different page altogether and an IP address like 206.161.121.82 shows up in the web address window. But if I copy and paste the web address into a new browser window, I can get to it that way. It also takes forever, the new browser tab says "searching" with the moving circle for quite some time. While it's "searching" the bottom left of the page says "www.analitic-checks.google.com" the entire time. I have a very fast broadband connection and everything loaded quickly about a week ago.3.) Answer:Browser/defrag/safe mode issues!

I have found multiple references of this on the internet. The web address, "analitic-checks.google.com" apparently contains a list of websites to block you from visiting, most of which include anti-virus websites, anti-apyware websites, etc. It also causes your internet to run slowly, and may/may not change your desktop background or bombard you with popups. Out of all the websites that say this was fixed, they all refer to http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php as the tool to remove it. If that doesn't work, I'm sure the computer experts in the Virus/Malware forum section would be more than happy to help you.In case the virus blocks you from visiting the website with the tool I just gave the link to, here's the direct link:http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.htmlAnd another: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.htmlHopefully one of those links won't be blocked.~ BaRR

It started by having a bunch of command prompts pop up trying to do who knows what. Then a bunch of different windows came up including ones that just had question marks all over and just all kinds of different stuff. I couldn't close it all. Loads of stuff was running. I knew I was screwed then but the computer was going too slow to put my USB in and back anything up. Couldn't open a lot of things like the task manager and whatnot. Surprisingly could run msconfig. Restarted in safe mode.. okay. looking good.when it loads up, there's nothing on the desktop but the recycle bin.inside the recycle bin I can see plenty of files I personally deleted. Not much appears in the start menu. This is copy+pasted from another forum.
I can't get any help from that one so I'm trying here..

Restarted in safe mode.. okay. looking good.
when it loads up, there's nothing on the desktop but the recycle bin.

inside the recycle bin I can see plenty of files I personally deleted.

Not much appears in the start menu.
In my computer, there's plenty of folders.. but no files appear inside of any of them.

I know the files are still in them because it tells me how much memory is in them.

Absolutely nothing will show up.

I've been crying so much. This is a music studio computer that has absolutely tons of work on it and I'll be devastated if I lose it. I have plenty of it backed up but a lot of recent stuff isn't backed up entirely.

Does anyone know if there's a way I can fix this or at least get my files off of it?

edit 5: (no edit button? seriously?)
Going into safe mode on the normal account rather than administrator gave me nothing but a blank locked up screen. Great.
I went back into the admin which still opened.. but still couldn't really do much.
Decided to see what would happen without safe mode enabled.
Loaded up. The background appeared but turned black shortly after. A program instantly started up and appeared on the desktop. Task manager worked so I closed a bunch of stuff.

Tried using the search to find some of my files. It won't find anything that's in the documents and settings folder.. Yet the folder itself is 80gb. I don't understand how everything can just be invisible from seeing it anywhere.

computer is pretty much ruined. guess it's going to have to be wiped.

I've had plenty of virus issues throughout the years but this has to be the most stressful one. definitely one of the worst days ever.

I guess it's over.

About 3 days ago I opened an mp3 file that someone had sent me in Windows Media Player. Apparently it was infected, but I didn't get any notice from AVG free. The screen flashed a few times so I suspected something was amiss. I right-clicked on the file where I had saved it and had it scanned by AVG; it said infected. So I told it to remove and I believe a message came up saying removal may cause problems with the system. I had it remove anyway, I guess my mistake.

Anyway, then the symptoms started. When I tried to run any executable I would get the message Windows cannot find <filename> make sure you typed the name correctly and try again. Now I don't even get that, nothing will start.

In Safe Mode most apps will start, but I can't connect to the internet. I think when it first happened I was able to connect via Safe Mode With Networking, but not anymore. I had to leave it for a few days to finish income tax on my laptop. In Safe Mode I get messages like Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall Service and The Security Center Service can't be started.

I downloaded Hijack This and burned it to a CD on the laptop. I can run it on the infected machine, but only in Safe Mode. I can also run the AVG command-line scanner in safe mode.

Any assistance you can provide in starting to find a resolution to this would be much appreciated.

Windows Vista Home Premium X64.

Thanks.

Answer:Can't rune .exe files except in Safe Mode

Does this sound like a Sircam virus or variant therof?

Do I have any hope of correcting the situation or should I just salvage what data I can and start over, either from a month-old backup or via reinstall OS?

Thanks for info.

Evening everyone,

I have been trying to get assistance for this issue which can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic474475.html/page__gopid__2893203#entry2893203

Unfortunately the biggest problem that is causing me to be unable to fix the issue is that I can't install any files. I haven't seen anything worth noting in the Windows error logs. Per Naren after running ListParts, he suggested that the problem was found and to post a support request here. Attached is the listparts log. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hey guys,

Had success posting here before so I am going to try it again. My friend gave me her laptop and stated her son had been on it and now they believe they have a virus (didn't provide me with additional details). This laptop is running Windows 7 Home Premium. I open it up tonight and here is what I noticed:

1) McAfee is continually stating that the computer is at risk.
2) Internet Explorer does not run at all. iexplore.exe is where it belongs but nothing happens when attempting to run.
3) Installer is not installing files. I attempted to install Mozilla Firefox. From the thumb drive UAC did come up but that was it. Copying the file to the desktop and attempting to install did nothing. Checking through error logs, I did see a notice that the installer service is not running correctly and that it could be installed incorrectly (ironic eh?)
4) Safe mode did not work. After attempting to run safe mode (w/ networking), it loaded 3 files finishing with hal.dll. It then proceeded to the repair installer, stating to reboot and if it worked successfully Windows will run normally.

Unfortunately I don't have many details to give you on this one. There aren't any applications or error messages that scream "This is what I am!". If ya guys could lead me in the right direction I would appreciate it!

Need help please to recover files in safe mode. I am unable to boot to normal XP Pro SP2 OS. I cannot access internet with present computer. I have an onboard CD drive and have access to a USB external HP Drive. I tried copying MY Documents to this drive but it would not work. I inserted disc that came with HP drive, it would not start automatically. Went to Explore and opened folders. All the folders appear to be microsoft video files. Also attempted to load new Mcafee CD and aborted install due to Norton loaded originally. I have the new Dell Install CD and Driver CD, install CD is XP Pro SP2.

Please help need instructions to copy wanted documents, pictures, etc. and do an new install. Or detailed steps to take to get back into regular windows. I should add that i was reinstalling windows when all this started, thought all was lost on HD, Dell tech support had me remove it after running diagnostic. New HD would not install properly either. Put old HD in and ran the same check and HD passed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have Windows XP sp3 and it fails to complete boot process every time. It reaches the desk top and variably shows desktop icons, sometimes explorer bar and some system tray icons. Moving the pointer over any of the icons or explorer bar produces the hourglass. I can only really boot up in Safe Mode but do not have Administrator password which according to the orignal seller, never set one.

I want to wipe out the XP and start fresh with Windows 7, but have important files to save before I do. I have tried everything. Help!

Answer:How can I copy my files in safe mode?

Welcome to TSF!
I'm afraid the rules won't allow us to provide any help with bypassing lost passwords, as there is no way to determine the actual circumstances.

If there was no password, it shouldn't prompt for one, so sounds like there actually is one.

Is the Administrator account the only one that appears in Safe Mode?

You can boot with the Win 7 DVD and use the command prompt to copy files to an external drive:
Boot with the DVD
Select your language and click Next
Click Repair your Computer
After it scans for Windows installations, select the Top option, then click Next
Click Command Prompt.

You can use a Ubuntu Live CD to copy files to an external drive, to another PC over a network, or bun them to disk.

My old toshiba notebook has crashed. Yes, I dropped it....more than once to be honest. (RIP). I can only boot into 'safe mode". I get a blue screen when booting in regular mode and get caught in a continual loop.

I just purchased a HP Pavilion 8055. I have a CAT5e Crossover Patch Cable. I want to transfer all my files to my new computer.

In the past, I have used the XP wizard feature to create a network.... I can't do this in "safe mode".

Is there another way to do this?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:x'fer files from safe mode to new computer?

Unfortunatley you may be stuck with bringing up a network. Im no PC expert, but I know you can get an adapter that will allow you to remove your old hard drive and use you USB port on your new laptop to make it a second drive. Then you can copy the files directly. I know some of the guys at work have the kit, its great, you can use it on any hard drive. I'll see if I can find it, its about $ 20.00

I need to access an .exe file when in safe mode. The instructions say to put it on the deskstop, then reboot into safe mode, but that doesn't work. Apparently only installed programs show. I've put the file into folders that show files in safe mode, but the file doesn't show when I boot into safe mode. I put it on a CD, but while the CD drive is recognized, the file doesn't come up.

Whenever I boot my computer normally, it works fine until I try to run a program, or open a folder, or do anything, and then my computer freezes. It works fine in safe mode. I have run virus scans with Avast and Malwarebytes, and found nothing. A couple days ago, avast started telling me that it was automatically running some program (C:\Program Files\Fujitsu\Utils\FjOddUnl.exe) in sandbox for some reason, but it never came up with any concrete problem, so I'm not really sure how much that matters. This laptop (Fujitsu Lifebook T-series) is a couple of years old, but I just had it repaired (under warranty) a couple weeks ago, and they replaced the HDD and the motherboard, and I really wasn't expecting to have problems like this again so soon.

this has been occurring ever since my computer was diagnosed with a trojan. i removed it, and ever since then no .EXE files will open. I will click on any .EXE file, the revolving circle signifying loading will show for a second, and then it won't load at all - the program is not present in the task manager.

the weird thing is, there is no difference in safe mode. no .EXE file will run in any variation of safe mode. this prevents me from running ANYTHING apart from the command prompt, viewing folders, and notepad. i cannot load the internet, a virus scanner, NOTHING. it is difficult to fix something when one is literally unable to access anything.

i have attempted the 'repair my computer' option when i press f8, but it says it can't be repaired automatically. i downloaded a registry fix from a different computer, but it reads the message "Could not import exefix.reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes".

I cannot load a registry fix, virus scanner, or the internet. i STILL cannot open .EXE files in any variation of safe mode. i do not have the windows 7 disc so i cannot reformat. additionally, the trojan appears to have erased all my system restore points, so i cannot restore to any previous time.

i have literally run out of ideas. i can't even install any fixes! any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

Answer:.EXE Files Do Not Open - even in safe mode!

A long time ago, I had something similar happen to me. I found my computer infected with some variant of the WinA Lizard (or something like that) virus that infected every .exe file I ran while it was on my system. It hosed every executable on the HD b/c it actually infected my command.com (in windows 95 - shows you *how* long ago). I got lucky b/c I loved making all of my .ZIP files self extracting executable files, and hosed every single one of the. I was able to still manually open the files using WinZIP, but I learned then not to make self-extracting executable files anymore.

At any rate, though, I found so many residual problems with that system I eventually formatted and reinstalled my OS. In this case, unless you can figure out how to restore your system to work correctly, this may end up being your only option.

Ok... so my mom brings me her computer... almost like I have any clue what I'm doing. NOT. She would like a few files saved before I wipe it clean n start over. If I go into the regular startup... it slows to the point of nothingness, then norton comes on to say that a trojan was found, and can't seem to do anything without it locking up.

So... started it up in safe mode. Thought, silly me, that I could just save her files that way, then erase all the crap, reload everything n give it back to her. But no... CD drives dont work in safe mode... DUH. And since some of these files are pictures, floppy isn't gonna work. What is the easiest way to save some files before the whole dang thing freaks out on me?

I posted to the forums at Mcafee as well because originally I thought this was a virus.
Here is a copy of what I put up at Mcafee.

am not sure if this is the correct forum for this, but I couldnt find one more specific.
I will include as much info as I can.
I am not a computer whiz, but I am not toally ignorant either.

2 weeks ago my 1yr old shut off my PC via the surge protector. Then it would not turn back on. I called the Geek Squad and they said sounds like a power supply. I told a computer saavy friend what the Geeks said and he said you can do that yourself. He brought over an extra power supply he had and popped it in for me until the one I ordered from Tiger Direct came. Everything worked fine. Then I took his out and replaced it with the new one and the pc would not boot passed the windows log on screen. It would start up as normal and then get to the log on screen and completely shut down and cannot be restarted without resetting the power supply.

It will however, fully boot in Safe Mode.

I thought maybe a heat issue?? So I pulled the fan and put on the heat gel stuff and still will not boot past Windows log on screen and then completely shuts down.

I figure, I must have a virus. I had Norton on the PC. I figured it must suck so i went out and bought McAfee Total Protection. I installed Mcafee in safe Mode and it ran a virus check and found nothing. I am unable to access the Mcaffee product via the icon or programs list. It just does nothing when I click on it.... Trying to clean my soon-to-be father-in-law's laptop, and it is an absolute mess. He had worked with it for months w/o firewall/antivirus-program etc.... It has become unbearable for him (too slow, hardly any interent access, pop-ups, security warnings too many to mention...)

It's a Dell laptop with XP Professional 2002, Service Pack 1.

I tried to clean it in Safe Mode: there I ran CCleaner, Ad-Aware, and Avira, each a couple of times. Avira told me after scanning that some files were locked, and they would be deleted on reboot, but after restarting, it found the same files again.

I located those dll files myself and tried to delete them manually (still in Safe Mode), but they couldn't be deleted or moved...
Some of them are:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\qopml.dll (TR/Dldr.ConHook.Gen Trojan)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\rxmfpocj.dll (TR/Vundo.Gen Trojan)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vuowpofk.dll (TR/Vundo.Gen Trojan)

C:\WINDOWS\System32\hdowabki.dll (TR/Vundo.Gen Trojan)
C:\DOCUME~1\RONPROS~1\rxmfpocj.dll (TR/Vundo.Gen Trojan)

I am at a loss. Usually I was always able to manually delete those kind of files in Safe Mode.
Here is my Hijack log (scanned in Safe Mode, after multiple cleanings):

Well, I've been scouring Google on our secondary computer all night, and I'm stumped. I'm also not completely tech savvy, so please forgive me.

My computer shut down by itself while I was typing an email. Rebooted and no exe files would open except IE 64 bit (as of six hours later, now that won't open either - opens, flashes, closes and says IE crashed). It has gone through numerous "windows won't start, repairing" screens. It has tried to system restore, but it doesn't fix the problem.

I cannot open in safe mode, and Task Manager is missing. I can open regedit but not msconfig (this is bothersome because I found a workaround for getting the system to reopen in safe mode by changing some configurations, but...) Can't open device manager as one option suggested looking for the possible virus culprit in the tools/drivers section.

I found a site that had an exe repair fix to either merge or import into the registry, but it keeps saying it can't do it because there are "processes running." Those boards suggested trying to the merge/import in safe mode, but as above..can't open in safe mode. Also since I have no task manager available, I can't manually end or suspend any processes.

Windows Defender runs but says everything is a-ok (clearly not).

Because I don't feel comfortable deleting anything from the registry, that's the only thing I haven't tried. Oh, I did find something that said to check the shell and one other place in the registry, bu... Read more

Answer:No exe files will open, nor msconfig or safe mode

Okay, I restarted and finally was able to get into msconfig. I set it up so the computer automatically starts in Safe Mode. Tried importing/merging that exe file again, and nope, says "other processes are running." Went into services through msconfig and shut down all services - still didn't work.

I also find a possible solution to create a new user - won't let me. Sigh....

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me please? I have some files on an external hard-drive that I've had problems accessing and have finally managed to figure out how to take ownership of the files by booting up my PC in safe mode (I have Windows XP Home), logging in as an administrator and then changing to administrator in the owner tab. I've now transferred all the files to the desktop on my PC but I now have the problem that I can only access them in safe mode and am unable to transfer them onto a CD or DVD rom and my memory stick won't register either. The files don't appear on my desktop when I boot up my PC the usual way, even though my setting in user accounts is admin. How do I go about transferring these files for use on my laptop (Windows 7 Professional) or on my PC in normal mode? Help!!!!

I'm using Windows 10 on my laptop. Few days ago, I found a process in task manager (I forgot the name) which seemed suspicious. So I searched the internet for it and found out that it is a cryptocurrency mining app so I looked for up how to remove it. I downloaded Malwarebytes first it cleared some stuff. Then I downloaded HitmanPro after which all the problem started, I guess. It scanned my pc for a while without showing any result. After a minute it showed some files that were scanned and all of them were Firefox Browser's cache. But at the exact same time Windows Defender started showing virus detected notification. I panicked and stopped the HitmanPro scan and restarted my pc to remove stuff from Malwarebytes scan and this scan. After this restart, everytime I start my laptop, it shows the error "Your PC will automatically restart in one minute". Tried a lot pf fixes from the internet but to no avail. The final option I think I have is to reset my pc. But here's the problem. My laptop is only starting in safe mode due to "Your PC will automatically restart in one minute" error. I can't select the option of 'Keep my files and reset pc' from settings cause it isn't working in safe mode. I started the System recovery by F11 option while starting the pc and there's a reset option too. Please tell me will I get to keep my files if I reset my pc from there?
Also the salesperson already created a Recovery drive on the hard disk itself. I also have the Recovery CD with me.

I have a problem with svchost.exe making my CPU 100, so I followed this guide to fix it. When I'm at the point of finding and opening the "fix_svchost.bat" file, I can't.

To try to resolve this problem, I went to here and downloaded the "Batch File Association Fix", but it didn't work and I noticed no difference.

Please help me solve this problem.

Thanks!

Answer:[SOLVED] I can't see batch files in safe mode?

Fixed it, sorry I'm not writing on the original post; I can't find the edit button. It turns out that my svchost.exe problem was actually not a problem after all. Multiple svchost.exe's running is normal. The reason for my CPU usage being so high is because of a process called MsMpEng.exe, not svchost.exe. Here is a picture.

i have windows home xp edtion on parkard bell.in safe mode it is fine, but when on normal bootup mode it will hang up after 2mins aprox(then restart saying crit error, check hardware etc and being to dump files kernel),on a blue screen.

i tried a different graphics card, but no joy.so i replaced the hdd drive and put a fresh copy of windows xp pro edtion on,but it loads all the files(i have not pressed f6)i just let it run its course on the disc, then it hangs up on the blue screen again with the words(crit error 0x0000007f)check hardware etc and if this is the first time you have seen it try starting windows again.

Thankyou for all your time.

Answer:Solved: xp safe in safe mode fine...mormal mode blue screen

Start in Safe Mode and look in C:\Windows\Minidump for crash log files with a dmp extension, like Mini071008-01.dmp. Zip 4-5 of the latest ones and post here as a ZIP or RAR attachment. The log file contains information useful to determine what caused the error, most likely hardware.

I'm new here and in hopes of getting this resolved. I just installed the new Norton Systemworks 2005 and rebooted after installation. When the boot screen got up to the blue screen with the Windows XP logo before displaying the login names where you put in your password, it just stops. I restarted a few times and waiting a few more times thinking it may need to 'finish' installing. But each time gave the same results. Finally, I went in with 'Safe Mode' and got in with no problems. Tried again in normal mode after looking around for any obvious problems (none found)... back to square one. Tried again in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and it failed like normal mode so I suspected a networking problem??? The last thing I tried which made me mad is that I tried to uninstall Norton Systemworks in 'Safe Mode' and that failed!! Anyone in these forums know the cure? :dead:

Answer:Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

Just a thought

Safe-Mode
Start \ Run \ msconfig \ diagnostic startup
disable any services attached to your most recent install and restart
should get warning next boot about using msconfig, its ok
One key service that needs to be available is the installer service
Try the uninstall, if doesn't complete
Try the uninstall string in the registry only if you know what you are doing

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Under it you will see a list of installed programs. Some don?t show up as words but you can figure out what they are by looking at their values. What you are looking for is the uninstall string. Double click that key as if you were going to modify its value. Do a CTRL + C to copy and then exit the registry editor.

Go to START \ RUN and paste the uninstall sting and hit enter. This should launch the uninstall.

Just a thought though as I am not infront of a test system at the moment. You should research this a little further so you have a clear understanding of what you can and can't do with msconfig.

or simpler yet

Safe-Mode

Start \ Programs \ Access. \ System Tools \ System Restore

Select restore point prior to install of whats giving you the problem.

Again, Good Luck

PS If you try to install it again, turn of antivirus and other open programs etc..

Hello,

I've got a peculiar and suspicious problem, but an expert in the Malware Removal forum found no infection on my computer (see the thread here.)

One of the symptoms I'm seeing is that the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) installer will not complete without errors in Windows XP Pro SP3 after a normal boot. After acknowledging the errors during the install routine (which are always the same, a screenshot is attached to this thread), the installer seems to finish. However, the second symptom is that MBAM then will not run due to the same pop-up error message. It's a Visual C++ Runtime Library error that says, "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information." Please see the screenshot in this Malware Removal thread.

I know that normally, some malware will disallow running the normal filename for MBAM, so the first thing I tried was renaming the file to something else, including using different file extension such as .com, .bat, .scr, and .pif. None of these renaming attempts worked. This is where I started to observe really strange behavior. After uninstalling my first MBAM install attempt, I found that I could install MBAM when booted to Safe Mode (after changing the registry to allow this and starting the installer service in Safe Mode). After the install I could also run MBAM in safe mode. I then rebooted to normal mode, and MBAM sti... Read more

As of a couple days ago, I have not been able to connect to most websites. If I do, it's after repeatedly attempting, and even then it may only load half way. Google will load most of the time, as will other low information websites. After doing a little experimenting with streaming media, I found that it will allow a small amount of information in every minute or so. While in safe mode with networking, everything internet based works perfectly fine.
I have run many different scanners (tdsskiller, avast, malwarebytes, ccleaner, adwcleaner, etc), which do find things, but nothing that ends up fixing the issue. I am using windows 7. I am not sure if this is malware or maybe even something that is occurring due to user ignorance. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I can only run my machine (OS: Windows XP Prof. 5.1 SP3) in safe mode. When I try to start Windows XP in normal mode I get the blue screen after a few minutes and a message that says ?Driver IRQL not less or equal? and then a series of Stop codes. This situation started after I had been using the hibernate option for a few days. After I had shut down fully and restarted I got a message stating that Windows had successfully installed the following update: Microsoft Browser Choice Screen Update for EEA Users of Windows XP (KB976002). At the same time I got a Microsoft Security Centre message telling me that McAfee Virus protection was not operating. Then my computer crashed and I got the blue screen. It may be relevant that a week earlier I had received a pop-up advertising virus protection. When I tried to close it, it started to download so I closed my browser quickly and ran both a McAfee and Malwarebytes scan. My notebook is infected with flec006, srosa, bagle, downld, hldrrr, mdelk, etc. Run ComboFix, OTCleanIt, Malwarebytes, SpywareBlaster, SuperAntiSpyware, HJT, with no luck. Since I have no wireless connectivity, I can't post the log files. I tried using a USB drive, and as soon as I hooked it to this PC, my AV software poped-up a warning window notifying me of an infection in the drive.
If I can get back to my wireless connectivity, then I can post the logs. Please help.

THANK YOU in advance!!!

One way or the other, we need to see the logs. Are you saying that our thumb drive is infected or that the av on the thumb drive recognizes the infections on your computer? Do you have a different thumb drive> Can you copy the logs to a cd? We would also need you to run the MGTools and get us the MGLogs.zip.

Hey guys,

Was tasked to fix another laptop. Oddly enough this issue is similar to the one I fixed a few weeks ago, found here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic475072.html

This is for a Windows XP Media Center edition laptop. I attempted to run Last Known Good Configuration, however that didn't resolve anything. Reading the preparation guide, I attempted to download and run DDS.com, however it would not run on the laptop. When attempting to run that, as well as any of the internet programs on the laptop, I see the hour glass real quickly and then that's it. I didn't notice anything in the error logs regarding the applications attempting to run.

I attempted to run both Safe Mode and Safe Mode w/ command prompt. Safe mode will load, however it only gets me to the black splash screen saying it's in safe mode and the mouse cursor. ctrl+alt+delete won't work for me to load explorer.

Please let me know where to start so that we can resolve this issue. I have a feeling where to start but I know as well as any it's very annoying when people want to jump 5 steps ahead.

Thanks!

Answer:Can't open any browsers, install files, no safe mode

My desktop after a while will not open any programs or files. I would say after 30 min to an hour. I have to reset the computer manually and the whole issue happens again. This doesn't appear to happen in safe mode though. I've used multiple virus programs to remove them but the issue still remains. I run windows 7 32 bit. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this.

Answer:computer unable to open files after a while, ok in safe mode

Hello prerunner97,

You could try a Clean Startup and see if you can determine a startup program you have that is causing the issue.
Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

You stated "I've used multiple virus programs to remove them but the issue still remains."
Does that mean you found malware, and removed what was found?
If so, maybe there are still some malware problems?
I'm no Malware expert, but there is a SF System Security forum where you could add a thread explaining your issue, and experts there might be able to help you.

You can spend a lot of time trying to fix the boot problem and clean the virus from the computer, or you can nuke it and reinstall Windows. I wouldn't bother trying to fix it, personally - I'd back up what I could and then I'd install Windows again.

Answer:Win.xp emachine starts and runs safe mode, safe mode with networking

hello and welcome to BleepingComputer,,

this is reminiscent of BIOS settings that need to be reset to default. you can do this by using that option in BIOS. do you see the option there?

if this pattern exists after BIOS reset, then there are other XP level options to try like console command /sfc scannow and chkdsk /r

not to long ago, i was dealing with a PC that was doing this same thing, and it was the hard drive (SATA) protocol setting in BIOS, it had to be set to IDE.

one more thing, this could be blue screen error that isn't halting, just looping boot. is there an option at the boot screen (the one with the safe mode options) about halting on errors?

This morning we had a power outage and when I turned my computer back on, it would not boot. I tried several times to hard boot, with no luck. Then I tried safe mode. Ran an antivirus scan and it showed malware and several infections which it cleaned. The computer still would not boot normally. I then ran chkdsk, still would not boot normally. I have ran malware bytes, registry repair and the registry defrag program as well as done a disk clean up. It still will not boot in normal mode.
Since my last problems that you helped me with, I have upgraded to a broadband internet connection and have a home network. The 2 other computers on the network are fine.
A week ago, I had purchased Avast internet security and had problems immediately. It would not allow me to connect to the internet. That was uninstalled and I went back to the free Avast antivirus, Zone alarm and Spyware blaster. I was very unhappy with Avast customer service and support iYogi and decided I did not want Avast on my computer at all. I have since downloaded PC tools free antivirus. Once I have my computer operational again, I am open to suggestions.
Fortunately, I did not change anything on the other 2 computers. Just mine.

Hello,

Recently my dad's computer had a corrupted hive and boot.ini. Via this website, I was instructed to run a chkdsk /r while in the recovery console. Everytime I used his OS disk to get into the recovery console, it prompted me for a password and I didn't know it (nor could I leave it blank). I decided to use my OS disk from my computer and I could fix the problem. Now, though, everytime I startup the computer, it prompts me to start windows normally, in safe mode, in safe mode with networking... To give further information...on that same screen there is an option for Windows XP and Windows XP Home Edition. Don't know if that has something to do with it. They both work though when I press enter on either one. Could anyone help me stop the computer from prompting me??? Thank you for any help.

Hello,
I have an external drive which I'm trying to reuse as a storage only medium. It's a usb drive on which at one point I managed to install a limited version of windows xp,to run on my first netbook (which I no longer use). I have put other stuff on the drive so I don't want to format it, but there are two files I can't get rid of.They are macromedia flash files. (ocx and exe). I tried taking ownership, running cmd adminstrator, going into safe mode with command prompt, and running admin powershell. I can see the attributes - A and R but I can't change them. I've also tried deleting them via filemenutools delete locked files, but that does not help me either. I want them gone, can anyone help me? I've read one other post where the OP had the same problem, but his problem was solved because his antivirus program eventually decided his file was a virus and got rid of it. So it is possible, but I can't find what to do. I guess it's not a big thing but it bothers me that I'm not able to remove these files no matter what I do. Help would be appreciated...

Answer:access denied when I delete files in safe mode admin

I would just reformat it personally. Start from a clean slate.

Can't open "my computer" or "control panel" or any other programs in normal or safe mode. In normal or safe mode, when I click on icons or shortcuts, instead of opening or starting the target, a shortcut is created on the decktop???

All help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Answer:Hjt Log; Virus; Can Only Open Files In Safe/command Line Mode

I have read the list of things that should be done to a hijacked computer before you post a HJT log but the only item on that list that the computer is able to do is to run HTJ from the command prompt (only in "safe mode with command prompt", not even from normal "safe mode"). So if there is anything else that should be done from "safe mode with command prompt" before posting another HJT log I will do it.

Any help is appreciated,
A

First off, please forgive me. I can only supply my HijackThis and Malware Bytes logs as they are the only programs I had installed prior to this problem.

It started a week or so ago when I had the stupid Security System Pro problem. I downloaded HijackThis, Malware Bytes and AVG at that time and it took care of it. Or so I thought. After that all of my searches on Google started to be redirected unless if I opened the cached version.

Today I could not open any of my .exe files. It would open the "open with" dialogue box and I would have to go to the C drive, find the program file and click on the program there to get it to open. Basically telling it to open with itself.

I tried to download ComboFix as it was suggested as well as the other downloads in the thread to read before posting. I cannot open or download any new programs. They won't open period. When I tried to download all the required stuff to post here, I am getting the message "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" and it won't even let me get to the page or it will download but it will pop up with the "Open With" dialogue box.

I also cannot boot in ANY safe mode. It just restarts over and over when I try to boot in safe mode.

AVG found and removed (so I thought) Manson\liser.exe but that's the only Trojan it's found other than some tracking cookies.

Can anyone help? My HijackThis and Malware Bytes logs are below. As I sta... Read more

Answer:Various Issues - Google Redirect, Can't Run .exe files, can't boot in ANY safe mode

Re: Various Issues - Google Redirect, Can't Run .exe files, can't boot in ANY safe mo

You need to download the programs to a different computer and transfer via cd. We need to see the logs from running ComboFix and MGTools. There is no reason MGTools will not run.

Let's do this in the meantime:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run HJT by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). Select Do a system scan only and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

How do I surpass this?

I have tried testing UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD) however I do not know which tools to use to fix this.

It seems that after Windows updated something then this happened.

Anyways, if there are no options, I would prefer to know how to just reformat my drive and reinstall Vista without starting up (because it does not, as prev. said). I am using a Dell Inspirion 1525 and it comes with a recovery disk (however when I boot the disc it loads but then just shows a mouse pointer and a black screen behind it). So, my question is, how do i reformat and can i Reformat using UBCD? I just want to start all over again. ( i have saved all my files in my seagate backup disk)

Hi all!

I have MS Win XP Pro SP3, and have run Runscanner and Autoruns in order to locate possibly missing system files (I do not want to run SFC /scannow as I think it is too powerful for me). Both tools found several ones missing, so I consequently ran several CMD (DIR) commands and SystemLook in order to locate any available backup copies of these. And luckily it turns out that seven missing files actually have existing backup copies.

These files are named as follows: isuspm.exe, CTDetect.exe, Changer.sys, i2omgmt.sys, lbrtfdc.sys, i2omp.sys and ViaIde.sys. The first two belong to Intel and Creative respectively, and the last five files are all Windows system files.

I would like to know: What is the best method to restore these system files safely; either use Safe Mode and the Recovery Console (from the Windows CD-ROM), or Linux Lubuntu or Xubuntu (on a CD-RW)?

I understand that I cannot repair this while running Windows, so anyway I obviously have to work with Windows offline.

Please let me know if you need to see these logs, and if so I will post them as necessary.

Thank you very much in advance!

Regards,
midimusicman79

Answer:Missing system files in XP - Use Safe Mode and the Recovery Console or Linux?

Autoruns will list some system files with a path of  "file not found". That is normal.

I am familiar with System Restore, selecting earlier times, and the often-available option of undoing a System Restore. But I found out (too late) that according to Microsoft, System Restore done in Safe Mode is not able to be undone.

I lost 1,000's of photos doing the system restore, now the only restore point option visible is what I believe to be the new one after I did the restore. Prior to me doing the System Restore, there were a number of times from me to choose from, I just chose one that was 10 days ago.

Is there any software, method, or hack that I can use or do to recover the thousands of photos that were on my desktop and that were in folders on my desktop? It's a 1 TB HD, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Mike

Answer:How can I undo or recover lost files from System Restore in SAFE MODE?

If I lost thousands of photos by running System Restore, the first question I would have is why did that happen? Did you have your photos stored in some Windows system folder?

Or did System Restore malfunction in some way? As I am sure you know, it doesn't normally affect personal data.

You might be able to retrieve something with a standard data recover app like Recuva.

Okay, I'm posting about a few concerns here, and I'd -really- appreciate any help I can get.

I also posted this in another forum, as I figure two heads are always better than one, and I can see what I get for suggestions on both sides.

Concern number two and three are my main priorities at the moment.

*****Concern number one***** (NOTE: apparently resolved on other forum... on Vista, Hosts files are blocked from access? )
When running Hijackthis, I get this error:

When I press okay, I then get this message:
http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...ko/hostss2.png

Why is this, and how can I fix this?

Here's the HJT log I get, anyways. Not sure if it has everything scanned because of the above errors:

When I boot to safe mode I cannot find Combofix or Rkill.
I tried. I put them on my desktop.
Even when I manually go to the desktop folder they are not there.

I had to run combo and rkill off a thumbdrive.

Is this normal?

Answer:Combofix and Rkill exe files disappear when I boot to safe mode. Normal?

ComboFix is optimized to run from normal mode where it is most effective. However, it should run in safe mode if you are having trouble getting it to run or loading Windows in normal mode. As to why it (or RKill) is not showing on your desktop after booting in save mode....not sure why without more information. Have you tried saving the files to a download folder instead of the Desktop? As a general policy, Bleeping Computer does not offer advice on how to run ComboFix unless we asked someone to run it or if there is a problem with the computer caused by running the tool. We recommend that people should not be using ComboFix without being advised to do so by a trained expert (see here) who is assisting them deal with a malware problem. When issues arise due to complex malware infections, problems running ComboFix (i.e. stalling, hanging, crashing) or with other security tools causing conflicts, experts are usually aware of them and can advise what should or should not be done while providing individual assistance. When false detections are identified, experts have access to the developer and can report them so he can investigate, confirm and make corrections. Those attempting to use ComboFix on their own do not have such information and are at risk when running the tool in an unsupervised environment. Also be aware that using ComboFix is only one part of the disinfection process. Preliminary scans from other tools like DDS, OTL, Zoek and RSIT should be used first because they p... Read more

I have no idea what happened or why. I was installing VZAccess Manager Software for a Blackberry and my computer froze and restarted. When I logged back on it loaded everything and then once done restarted again. After the second time I didn't have to log back on because there were no passwords in place and everything I had was deleted including system restore points. The internet will not work unless I am in safe mode. I am running on Windows XP. I would really appreciate any help anyone could give me. I'm not even worried about getting all my files back, if I could it would be great but if I can't I really just need my computer working normally again. If this is posted in the wrong location please just direct me where to go. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Computer constanly restarting, all files deleted, won't connect to internet unless in safe mode

Try this scan. You can copy it over from another computer if you need to.Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page. Please download DrWeb-CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:Double-click on launch.exe to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current versionRead the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs. The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders). If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window. If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All. (This will move any detected files to the C:\Documen... Read more
