External USB hard disk not read by PC

Question: External USB hard disk not read by PC

I've been using my external USB hard disk often, but all of a sudden my PC doesn't recognize it. Actually, it does make a sound when I plug it in, and I can also go to "safely remove hardware" option down in my taskbar. But this HD never opens automatically as usual, and it cannot be seen in "My computer as one of the hard disks." The same thing also hapens when used on other computers. Anything I can do before paying the service guy? Thanks.

Preferred Solution: External USB hard disk not read by PC

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi i am using 320GB seagate external hard disk, retrieving data from hard drive is not possible. It shows oKb in the properties. When i tried to explore the drive it show an error that
"Disk is not formatted

The disk in drive K is not formatted.

Do you want to format now".

The external hard drive is a Seagate, 320GB, Model Number: ST903203FAM2E1-RK

Is there a way to retrieve her data? or is there a way I can repair/restore his boot sector (which I assume is corrupt)?

Any and all suggestions appreciated.

Hi All,

I connected my external hard disk drive to LG LED TV, after then connected to laptop(Win 7),
showing some of the file size as 0 bytes, so please kindly help me how to recover those folder.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:External Hard Disk not able to read some folders

I would imagine that the TV formatted the drive to its own format so it could use it to store programs.
You need to find out what format that was and install the correct drivers in your PC.

when I am putting my Seagate external hard disk into the USB cable, the drive light turns on as it does normally, the green icon at bottom right in toolbar appears as well, but there is no autoplay and the drive is absent from 'My Computer'.It is appearing in the device manager. Explorer is running very slow. The same thing is happening with the drive in every other cable and in other computers as well.

Please give an insight if you can as to what may have happened and what can be done.

Thank you.

I am heavy user of external hard disks and have been using it for quiet few years. Till now  I never confronted a problem like this. I usually connect the hard disk directly to the television instead of using a media player. But this time, after I connected to the TV some of the folders in my hard disk are not being read in my laptop. Windows 8 is not recognizing these folders. It shows 0 bytes as folder size where in the actual sizes of these folders are about 60-100 GB. The image below shows the files in the red box that are affected.
Now I'm worried if I will lose these data as they are very important for me. If anyone has been in this situation before or know about this please help me. It's urgent!!

Answer:External Hard Disk not able to read some folders after connecting to LG LED TV

That looks like file corruption on the drive and thats a bad sign. Moving a hd around all the time can cause damage to the data if it gets bumped hard enough. It's best to use a SSD as there are no mechanical moving parts. You could try chkdsk from the command line. If the drive is D: then the command would be chkdsk /f D: You may also try a recovery program that can read data raw like recuva or isobuster or something like that.

hi all,

i would like to ask you a very basic question:

What is the difference between an external hard disk and an internal hard disk mounted on external enclosure?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure risky in terms of loosing the data?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure reliable to use?

kindly let me know as there is a vast difference in the price of these hard disks. The external hard disk is costing more and if i use internal hard disk in external enclosure price is very much reduced.

my only concern about using internal hard disk in external enclosure is the reliability.

thanks in advance,

What is the difference of 3.5 external hard disk (e.g. WD My Book) vs a 3.5 internal hard disk fixed into an enclosure to work like an external hard disk?

Are both good to be use as an external drive to store backup?

What 3.5 enclosure is good?

Answer:3.5 external hard disk vs 3.5 internal hard disk with enclosure?

What do you mean fixed into an enclosure to work like an external drive? Are you referring to a My Book 3.0 VIA USB 3.0.... vs.... an internal SATA III SSD or HDD? Be a little more specific.

I install Windows XP to external USB HDD and Windows 7 to other USB HDD.
I have been using boot from ext. USB HDD for years because internal HDD is too small at that time and I keep it that way until recently I got problem.

I change from Dell620 to HP8560 and immediately it cannot boot from WinXP on USB. The only message is "A disk read error occured. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart". I try to install again without any error during the installation process, but same error once it boot from ext USB HDD.
I still can boot Win7 on other ext. USB HDD. I upgrade it to Win8 Release Preview and work smoothly. When Win8 RP expired, I keep using it without upgrade because I usually use it for less than 2 hours.
Suddenly it cannot boot again like WinXP on other USB HDD. "A disk read error occured." I cannot find anything wrong with USB HDD.
I can still access all files on USB HDD from any system. I just cannot boot from it.

How can I know if this is hardware defect or recently Windows apply patch/update that make it cannot boot from USB anymore ?

Answer:A disk read error occured on external USB HDD

Windows is not meant to boot from a USB HDD. Install the HD internally or via SATA converter cable, then run Paragon Virtualization Manager to adjust it to the new hardware.

Hard disk--Western Digital 40GB EIDE
Enclosure--StarTech 3.5" eSATA/USB2 IDE/SATA

I removed hard disk from Win98SE machine, put it into external enclosure, and connected it via USB to WinXP PC. In WinXP, the now-external disk is displayed as Local Disk (E)

Problem--The folders listed under Local Disk (E) are (seemingly) randomly named--such as $V, BA, DE, MY, OL, PR, and WIxDOWS....where "x" looks like a greek character or something from a different character set. No familiar or recognizable folders are displaying. Some individual files are listed under E: .BAT, and a few .TXT files, but I can't open them.

When I click on one of the folders, I get error msg: "E:\BA refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted....then try again."

I wondered if the hard drive was corrupted or damaged, but it was working fine when the Win98 machine's CPU overheated. The enclosure's docs say that WinXP natively supports the enclosure, so no extra drivers are needed--I assume this is correct? And that the Win98 and WinXP file systems are

Any ideas on what's causing this problem? What's the best way to troubleshoot this?

I will enclose here my complaint which I send to motherboard maker Gigabyte, regarding USB external hard disk problem. Please read it and if anybody knows how to solve this, thanks.
My computer has external hard drive connected to USB 2.0 port(s), which is extremely slow. Drive is Transcend StoreJet. No drivers exist for it. It works perfectly for other I/O operations like copy, paste, delete, etc. When I try to make hard disk image with any program, and store it on Transcend Store Jet, speed starts with 50MB/s but drops to nearly zero in few minutes. You can see example on attached picture. It is the same with any program. Disk image would take more than one day to complete, if it completes at all. Actually, I never managed to finish image with any disk imaging software. I tried all usual software for that: Paragon, Aomei, Acronis, EaseusToDo, Drive XML, etc. Are there any USB or other drivers which are responsible for this issue? Can Gigabyte be serious regarding its costumers and provide them solution in order to use USB ports for most important thing (backup)? In this case, making disk image is totally impossible. USB 2.0 ports have speed оf 480 Mbit/s, theoretical. This is far cry from situation here. So, ... Read more

Imaging your 150 Gig via Usb will take time { Mine are about 40-50 Gig } Operating System And Programs Only.
I personally partition my main Drive eg: c:\ and d:\ and so only the operating system is on C;\
Then use the D;\ to store your personal files. , this way your c:\ wont keep growing in size as you are storing everything there.
If you cant actually do anything with the computer because of warranties as you stated "just serviced" , ask them why you cant Image Drive.
1/ Try another hard drive to backup to.{ Usb will always be slower } than directly connected to Mobo.
2/ Use Mini Tool Partition Wizard [ Free } to create another partition -
3/ Remove all Temp Files / Restore Points / etc with Ccleaner { Free ] -
this will reduce C:\ size to minimal size { defrag drive also }.
4/ Use any program to Image C:\ { I use Acronis }. to the D:\ Backup Folder.
5/ Then copy the image to any portable drive or external if need be.
6/ Use the D:\ for your personal files and folders as a backup also.
Sometimes you have to do things yourself - than rely on Service Centres and Costs.
If you run a Business then you claim all your costs incurred.
All this will take time but you will have backups and feel at ease.

Couple of hours ago my Windows 7 could not recognize my external USB hard disk (Maxtor Basic). It came up on Disk Management and Device Manager but not on My Computer. However I fixed it (by deleting its line off regedit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices, plugging out the ext. HD and plugging back in). Windows automatically installed the drivers and I could access the drive.

But now Windows shows my Maxtor as a fixed disk drive, instead of "devices with removable storage". I still have the option to "Safely remove hardware and eject media" from taskbar, however I rather have Windows treating it as a Removable USB Storage so that the disk can sleep when not in use. I am pretty sure it has something to do with regedit, so any help would be appreciated.

Answer:USB external hard disk shows up as internal fixed disk

Welcome to Windows 7 Support Forums, Sactyr.
A word of caution! Its never a good idea to alter your register,
IMHO please review your device manager and check your devices for your disk drives, check for any warnings in the driver area.
I'm attaching my screenshot for comparison as I have a similar configuration.

If I am saving a backup to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 USB external hard disk

1. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 3.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

2. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 2.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

Answer:Speed of saving to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 external disk?

There's no definitive answer, it would all depend on which internal drives you had (SSD/HDD, SATA 6GB, SATA 3GB) and which external drives you had and their relative transfer speeds. It's all just guesswork without that info.

I have a problem regarding my external Toshiba hard disk 500 GB where it can?t be detected in my computer and also disk management. I have formatted the external HD since I was asked to format it when an error popped up.
So I formatted it and after the formatting completed, I tried to connect the hard disk to my Windows Win 7 laptop. When I connect it to the laptop, it can?t be detected and yet the hard disk is blinking with its white light like it used to when it is connected to the laptop. I tried the disk management thingy, but it can?t detect my hard disk. I tried in other laptops but the result is same
What can I do to make it better? Please help me.

Answer:External hard disk not detected in My Computer and in Disk Management

First off, how old is your Toshiba external HDD? Also, when it starts to spin up, do you hear any sort of clicking or whining noise?

If you hear any noises that sound off, it's possible your external HDD is failing.

When you formatted it, what file system did you use to do so? Because sometimes even if Windows can't detect it, I have had success with booting with a Ubuntu Live CD, and then connecting the external HDD in order to format it that way. It all has to do with how Windows formats HDD's and how Ubuntu and other Linux systems do.

If you can I recommend downloading Ubuntu onto a CD and boot to it on one of your computers, in the Live CD mode, so it doesn't install anything. Once its loaded, plug in the Toshiba and try to format it as NTFS (this is important, because Ubuntu doesn't use it as a native file system, so you need to make sure that NTFS is selected on the format window, not EXT4 or the other types of Linux OS File Systems)

If it doesn't work, post back here, and I will see if I can help you some more. Also feel free to PM me if you have any other issues.

Hey guys, can anyone help me with this problem? My external hard disc just stopped being read one afternoon. It was still going ok in the morning. When I plug it in, sometimes it freezes my screen and other times it just does nothing at all and once in a while it pops up reading it but the folder is empty. I can hear the external hard disc run but it doesn't detect anything on my lap top. The light on my external hard disc blinks at times while usually it stays.

What is happening? Is there anyway I can recover my stuff inside? I have alot of important documents inside, help?

I would appreciate your help. Thank you!

Answer:External hard disc can't be read

Good Afternoon zackang , I would suggest trying to take the drive from the housing and fitting it as a slave on a standard PC using an ordinary IDE ribbon cable.
The master slave settings would need to be taken into account and the BIOS on the testing machine may need to be reset to detect that drive.
There are different avenues to follow dependent on the circumstances from that point.
Recovery software may be needed etc..
Cheers, qldit.

ican not read my external hard drive, it comes up as file structure corrupted.

Answer:can not read external hard drive

Have you tried using it on another PC? If it doesn't work on another PC you're HDD may have become corrupted meaning that you can try to recover the files on the disk and back them up to your PC - using a program like GetDataBack although this isn't guaranteed to work. After which you may need to format the HDD in order to be able to use it again. Possibly formatting it through windows or, failing that, through a boot and nuke software like DBAN.
It is, however, possible that the disk may just be 'kaput' and the system is just reading it was corrupted - in which case you'll have to get a new HDD and if the files on it are really valuable you may want to consider taking it to a specialist.
Hope this helps. - Bungo

I recently removed my 500gb external Hard drive and attached to another PC ( for what purpose I dont recall). I removed the HD using the " Safely Remove Hardware" feature located in the lower left hand tray. Yet when I put the harddrive back  on the first computer it dosent show when I click on My computer. I see the C: drive, the D: drive, the printer. Yet I dont see the HDD which was usually the E: drive.  When I go to My computer/properties/device manager - i see the hard drive and indications say its working properly. If  I go to " Safely Remove Hardware"  I can see the hard drive. Hmm?    Oh and by the way I am using a USB hub.  I removed the hard drive once again and attached it to my laptop which it was read and indicated the the device was ready, installed and ready to use. Yet I get the same problems as with the first computer. External HDD not shown on when I open My computer. Hard drive is getting power all power lights are on.  Please help. Recently I've tried to connect my drive into my laptop, and it kept asking me to format the drive, which I obviously don't want to since I have data on it.
I searched to internet for many programs/ways that could help, and after some time, I tried a program that called 'TestDisk'.
When running it, it said that I have a damaged file system in the drive, and I accidentely clicked on write after that, which asked me to reconnect the drive after that.

Now when I'm connecting the drive, it doesn't even pop up on 'My PC', but it does shows on Device Manager though.
On 'Disk Management' I have the following:

The only option I seem to have there is to 'Initialize disk'.
Can it help, or it can also damage the data stored there?

I'm open to any other suggestions...

My wife has a 2TB external harddrive by Mediamax. It stopped working so I took it out of the enclosure and examined it and it appeared that the USB cable had failed as Windows 7 would not believe me anything was attached, but the hard drive had power and was obviously spinning.

I then bought off ebay this cable:

USB to SATA 15+7 22 Pin Transfer Cable Connector Conversion 2.5" HDD Laptop PC | eBay

USB to SATA 15+7 22 Pin Transfer Cable Connector Conversion 2.5" HDD Laptop PC

In the hopes that I could then attach this to the hard drive and read the data. Now windows 7 drive manager says disk 1 is unknown and not initialised. When I tried to initialise it (I realise I don't want to) it says the drive is not ready. The Hard Drive is not spinning audibly any more. I believe it is possible that the drive is not getting enough power even though I have plugged in both USB cables of the cable shown.

I hope this is enough info.

Please help me as my wife would be ecstatic to have it working again.

Answer:External hard drive can't be read

I'd say you're not getting it enough power with that adapter.

You should get a full enclosure, or just put it internally inside of a desktop.

If Windows can't access it, see if a Linux LiveCD such as Ubuntu can access the drive.

Answer:External Hard disk showing as RAW in disk management

Sounds like the drive is failing or the circuitry in the enclosure is faulty.

I would first remove the drive from the enclosure and hook it up as a slave to a desktop PC. See if you can then access it. If you can, then post back for further instructions with the version of your OS.

I have emailed Paragon and am awaiting there reply, but you guys seem to know a lot more and try and solve the problem

Up to this point I have used either Acronis or Paragon for my backups, I prefer Paragon over Acronis, mainly because the restore by Paragon is far quicker.

I have both bootable CD's, but in this instance I would like to concentrate on Paragon.

I downloaded Paragon's Advanced Recovery CD. 2009 Build 6730. Put it in my rom and booted ....... looked at a black screen for 10 minutes. Removed it and rebooted, it got stuck at the loading of Vista, then I got another black screen no hard drive movement.

Rebooted again, this time with the regular Paragon bootable CD. It booted into the recovery console.

Now this is where things go from bad to worse. I tried finding my OS, after a lengthy period I received an error disk 2 i/o fault!!! ....... no operating system found.

Now disk 2 is my external hard drive where my backups are kept.

So I rebooted with the CD in, went into the recovery console and clicked on "safe restore", after playing the waiting game I get a message disk 2 i/o fault!!!.

Took out the Paragon CD, put in the Vista one, tried a repair, but there was no OS to repair .

My Dell laptop's hard drive broke so I sent it off to be recovered, thankfully they managed to recover quite a lot and put it all onto an external hard drive. My problem is that while I can access a lot of files there are also a lot of files with just gobbledegook and I'm intrigued as to what information they hold. I've tried file converter but that doesn't really tell me much more of what I already can see. I've transferred the external hard drive onto my new Imac. Can anybody please tell me how I can un-gobbledegook logs, files and extensions and everything else that seems to show all this 34£$£$%£$%ldkwoi£$%%^ sort of stuff please?

Recently bought an Oyen 500 external hardrive off craigslist, and it shows up under the icon tab at the bottom left, but it will not show up under my computer. I have a compaq laptop with Windows 7.

So I right clicked my computer, manage, disk management, and it first read: DATA ERROR (CYCLIC REDUNDANCY CHECK). I then changed the partition style to GUID, It was selected on a different partition style but I forget the name. Should I have done this? After I had done this, I was able to view the hardrive space, and it is showing up with 465.64 gb space (it is advertised as 500 gb), but its left without a name. It says Unallocated.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I've dismantled an old PC and taken out the 500gb SATA HDD and fitted it into a Smart Drive enclosure to use it as a back up for my laptop.Everything is connected and powers up and the laptop identifies the external drive as a mass storage USB device and loads a driver. I can see the device shown in Devices and Printers. However, the laptop cannot see any of the files which are currently on the disk and which I want to transfer to the laptop,it shows the volumes as empty. I've tried a driver update but that's not the problem. I'd be grateful for any thoughts

Answer:Computer won't read external hard drive

Can you see the device in "computer".As it's a laptop, one thought is that the USB port may not be able to supply sufficient power, although if the device is recognised i wouldn't have thought that to be an issue. Just mentioned that because a new portable HDD I have has a "spare" USB plug on it's lead to double up using two ports if needed.

Good day to you all-
Ive been using an external 1TB hard drive for the past year and a halff and its been working perfectly. Never been dropped, hit; no damage whatsoever. This past Saturday I unhooked it from my computer to wipe away a lil dust that was starting to gather on it. I hooked back into my computer an dnow my computer doesnt read it when booting up. Usual when i turn my computer on (Id have to turn my hard drive on first), at boot-up Id have to hit the F1 key and then my computer would just run as normal but now when i turn my computer on it doesnt read the hard drive. The hard drive still works cause when I turn the power on, the LED indictaor lights up and when I turn the fan on inside it, it works as well. At boot-up, when I turn my hard drive on then my computer on, I get the message after hitting F1, "F1 No device to continue, press F2 for Setup Utility" ... any suggestions?? Since the hard drive still works, is it possible for me to have all of my work transferred off of here onto a separate hard drive?? PLEASE help, there is a LOOOT of work on here I need off of here.

I have recently bought a Seagate 9SD2A4-500 (500GB External Hard Drive). It works like an absolute charm on every computer in my house (One version of XP and another Win 7). However, it does not work on my own computer.
It seems that this hard drive using USB 2.0 Cannot be read. When placed into my PC, (Win 7), it does recognise a device has been added, driver updates occur but it believes it is a "Initio Default Controller" I am unable to access it, reformat it or in any way change it. I have took advice from other sites and forums, for example I already have:

Used Seagate tools, but it doesn't work as the device is not recognised as it is an Initio default controller.
I have uninstalled content, reinstalled without allowing updates to happen, but a device is not recognised.
Used different USB cables, for example USB-B --> two USB A's so it can have more power, but it makes extremely loud noises and does not recognise it, and I think it is more damaging than helpful.
I have already determined that it is not the USB cable (USB-B to A) as it works on other computers. Similarly, it is not my own USB ports, as other devices work perfectly. It does have warranty, but bearing in mind that it works on other computers, I don't believe it is the hard drive's problem. It is most likely to do with some settings that I haven't considered so far.

Please can you help wise wizards of this forum!

Thanks in advance,

I have a problem with my external hard drive, I can use it fine on my Vista at home (all that is on my External HD is photos, jpegs and Raws) I can delete, move and do pretty much anything normally at home but it wont let me do anything except open them on TAFE computer's which are Macs.
I did have a problem with them being read only on my Vista and it wouldnt even allow access for me to re format it, but somehow I managed to sort it out.

I have never had a problem with this on the Macs before.
When I get to TAFE computers it tells me the files are read only and I cant even save new data on the hard drive. This has happened to my old hard drive and also to my new one only recently. Plus it must be the drive settings or something because if at home I add new files, at TAFE it will be the same for the new files.

I tried at home doing all the things mentioned prior in another post such as changing the authority of ownership at home on my Vista, and changing the files so they arent read only (with the tick in the square) but with no success. I have no clue what to do.
Please if you have another idea.

Thanx Taz

OKay so I have a Maxtor one touch plus4, Seagate. 1 TB External Hard drive... It's worked fine for about the last six months or so on multiple computers. I went to access it this past weekend and it's not reading. It comes up in the device manager as there being a usb mass storage device, but the plug and play side of it isn't working and it's not coming up under my computer. I've heard of software to manually mount external drives for Linux, but I can't seem to find anything that works with Windows (Vista or XP). I was also told you can go into the registry and manually map the drive (tried doing so from the map network drives, but it's not reading.) but I have no idea where in the reg it'd be... Anyone out there have any thoughts, suggestions, ideas, comments anything?!?!?!

Answer:External Hard Drive wont read!!!!

If it is the Seagate 1TB, this is a well known failure.

Hey guys.

I've been having this issue for awhile now, and I've tolerated it because I didn't need to have the issue resolved, but now I'm getting to the point where I need it fixed or else I'm screwed memory wise. I've gotten up to the point where I only have 2.5 GB of memory left.

My MacBook is 4.5 years old, so I have a very small internal hd (60GB) so to alleviate some of the burden some of my music and movies (roughly 20GB) place on my tiny hard drive, I started using an external hd to store a good amount of those files to free up some space on the internal drive. Now somehow, along the way, the external was improperly disconnected and became damaged. The files are still accessable from the hd though because it's become read only. It seems I can also copy files off of the external onto my internal, but that does me know good because I don't have anywhere near the amount of storage I would need to copy the files off and reformat the external.

Now to my question... Is there anyway I can repair the external without compromising and losing all of my music and movies? It's a large collection and I don't want to have to waste all of the time reobtaining all of the deleted data. If it means anything to you, the external is a Western Digital 3007A MDL: WD1600U017-003

Any suggestions would really help

My computer was in the process of crashing so I had to start it up in safe mode to get anywhere on it. I went to all of my personal files and copy and pasted them onto my external hard drive. I checked the external to ensure all the information was there before I reformatted my hard drive and ran the recovery disk. Now that my computer is back up and running I can't acess my external anymore. It shows up but when I click on it the computer wants to format it. The only difference I have noticed is that before the format the external was named (D and now is (G. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I have had a WD external hard drive successfully connected for over a year. The main purpose is to backup phots and music. I realized about 2 months ago that the backups were not happening and that although the drive (L appeared on My Computer, I could not explore it. It was originally connected by the firewire port so I tried switching it to the USB. I can power it down and power it back up and then read its contents for a short time, but it doesn't stay available.

At the same time, i have had performance issues. I return to my computer finding it has rebooted itself. This seemed to start about the same time the WD disappeared. I have to wonder if the two are related. I've run the Norton diagnostics I have available and defragged. The overall performance has improved, but I'd like to get the WD working correctly. Computer is HP Media Center PC, running XP.

Answer:Cannot read or write to external hard drive

The problems are almost certainly related.
Look in Control Panel/Admin Tools/ Event Viewer/System and Application for any red entries that may give you a clue.
You need to narrow this down to what's causing the WD to be unavailable.
You could also connect this drive to another computer to see if it works properly.

I have an HP a6750t desktop, running Vista Home Premium X64. I have a Western Digital external hard drive attached via USB which I use for backups. It works just fine most of the time. However occasionally when I try to backup to it, it is in read only status. Rebooting th PC clears the problem, but I am baffled by this intermittent problem. Any ideas as to what is wrong?

Answer:External Hard Drive Occasionally Read Only

How do you definte "read only status" in this context? What is the result of trying to write files to the drive? An error message?

Does the drive itself or software which came with the drive offer some means of toggling read-only functionality?

This hard drive has many important pics on it. I went under Command Prompt as administrator and did driver detail on it. Besides saying that the Current Read Only State and the Read Only saying Yes beside them, the Location Path says unavailable. To make it really weird, sometimes when I first plug it in I can copy stuff from it, but only for like a fraction of a minute, and than it wont let me into files. I have another hard drive of the same brand and size, empty and awaiting to save files from this hard drive. also when I will try to get on the files, some of them will ask me if I want to format the disk, I will say cancel and it will say data error (cyclic redundancy check). I have read else where that this means the disk is failing.

I want to change the drive from read only to a way to get the stuff off the hard drive. Oh the hard drive is a 500GB Free Agent Go Flex Seagate USB 3.0, so is the one I have ready for it.

Also a little bg. when it first died I couldnt even get on far enough to see files. On time I did get on, about 2 weeks later, and was able to see all my files were still there. Than my compy died, since I didnt realize it had come unplugged from the wall. After that once again I couldnt get on it and it was reading as RAW. Than, this past week, all of a sudden it was reading as NFTS, showing the properties (so I can see that the same amount of GB is still the same as before the drive went weird), and letting me get on to the first part, and sometimes... I have an old Maxtor OneTouch external hard drive. 120gb. It's a FAT32 file system and was installed on my old Windows98SE PC.

The problem is that the external hard drive isn't read by any other computers. I've tried it on multiple laptops, and other PCs to no avail. I'm not sure if this has to do with the operating system?

It works perfectly fine on the old Windows98SE. I want to get the data off of it, but none of my new external hard drives are read by my old Win98SE system either without problems/CDs/etc.

Was just wondering if anyone could help?

My friend gave me a Lacie 160 GB HD. He has a Mac and there are only firewire ports on the external hard drive. I bought a firewire card and plugged everything in.

Initially it doesn't show up and is missing the drivers so i download enum1394.sys. And then it stops giving me that message "new hardware is found."

However, the Hard Drive doesn't show up in My Computer.

Left side: My Computer
Right Side: Disk Management - I can see the Hard Drive it's called "Disk 1" and says "unallocated"

The second pic just shows just shows properties and such (maybe helpful?):

I was informed I should Partition/Format it. But there are 140 GB of files on here that I must have. I can not delete them. I just need to view the files.

Could it be I downloaded the wrong enum1394 file? Is it because it's a Mac? What can I do?

Answer:Help !!!!! Can't read files on External Hard Drive

Just going out on a limb on this... Are they hidden files? Try searching for a file you know is on it with search and mark "Search Hidden Files/Folders" and see if anything comes up. A hidden search for an mp3 file (*.mp3) would find all files hidden or not that end with a .mp3 If this is the case, just adjust your file viewing settings so you can see hidden files/folders.

I changd from a PC with XP to a PC with Vista and connected the external to my new computer. When I now try and save to the exernal it says that I can't as it's read only. Why would this be?

Answer:Solved: external hard drive says read only

What you need to do is clear the read only attribute from the external hard drive. To do this you will use the diskpart utility.

Type cmd in the start area of the search menu.
Right click on cmd.exe in the area above and select run as administrator.
In the command prmpt type diskpart and the other commands as I have shown. Make sure to select the disk associated with the external hard drive. In detail you will see that it has the attribute of readonly (unlike mine). In the example mine was not cleared because it was not read only in the first place. Yours should work.

The extra IDE controller card i used to connect my 2 old hard disks. After install my Window XP into my new hard disk(120GB connect to SATA cable), I cannot see my 2 old hard disks in "my computer"(40GB and 13GB connect to IDE controller card using PCI from mobo). I tried to use array and array them together but i don know whether am i doing the right thing or not.

Answer:Hard Disk Cannot read

Have you checked the jumpers on each IDE drive if they are both slave or both Master they will not be seen, in other words one Master and one Slave on each IDE cable even on the pci card you have installed. The Sata will be seen because of the mbr as the system drive and they do not have the jumper problem.

[Seriously need help] External hard disk causes hard drive failures & OS crashes
The thread is rather long. Only read what you think important. Skip the rest!

We have a serious but mysterious problem. We have spent already one week but drawing a blank.
Two hard drives have been crashed and failed (unreadable). One computer has hung a few times unexpectedly and had one weird restart (no memory dump produced).
I suspect all the recent problems have to do with the new USB external hard disk (Buffalo MiniStation Lite: HD-PE250U2).

Formatting USB external hard disk
Originally I would like to use the program given by Buffalo to format the external drive once but we failed. We simply used Windows to reformat the drive into NTFS. I did not use the TurboSpeed advertised by Buffalo, or run its free program.

Case A: Multi-transfer causes system crashes?
The first time we met the problem.
We were trying to help a friend to backup data on an old drive, about a few years old. We plugged in the Buffalo USB portable hard drive and transferred a whole lot of files to the drive. Several cop/cut-and-paste operations were active at that time. The whole system completely froze up. It doesn't respond at all. Only a hard restart could help.
Restarted. Tranferred again. Several cop/cut-and-paste operations were active.

Hello to all

I am hoping that someone here can help me with my problem. I have tried other sites and did a search in Google and I have not found an answer to the problem at hand.

My system:
I have a clone computer with:
ASUS motherboard A8N-SLI DeLuxe
2GB Corsair RAM Memory
2 Nvidia 7600LS Video cards
2 Western Digital 250GB hard drives set on a RAID 0 configurations.

The problem:
Some time ago I purchased Acronis True Image version 8.0. I never had the chance to use it until this week. My computer slowed to a crawl and then it crashed. Days before, I had made a backup of my OS so I decided to restore it from the backup that I stored in an external HD. I have two Western Digital 250GB hard drives configured as RAID 0. The program restored the image successfully so I restarted the computer after it finished. Unfortunately now the computer will not boot up. The hard drives are okay, no problems at all, however I keep getting the following message:

?A Disk Read Error Occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to Restart?

My questions are these: Has anyone encountered a situation similar to mine and if so, what did you do about it? Can anyone tell me if it?s possible to purchase two new HDs identical to the ones I have, recreate the RAID 0 and then plug in the two hard drives that I have problems with? Will my computer recognize them and allow me to get my data? Or can I reload Win XP Pro on a new HD and then use a program like OnTrak Data Recovery to recuperat... Read more

The total of the 5 albums is 415MB, has anyone any ideas what's wrong or is it ready for the bin.

Answer:Toshiba external hard drive can't read source.....

if its not trustworthy then bin it.

I've never had any problems with my external hard drive. It's actually an internal with an enclosure, but I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

Anyway, something strange happened a while ago. I went in to my external drive and see that everything is missing, and the only thing remaining is one folder (out of the hundreds that I had), with no files inside. I went to my computer to check if the data was still there and it read that there was space being used. The same amount it would have been if I had left it there.

I thought maybe it was a bad connection, so I unplugged and plugged the USB cable again. When I did that, the external didn't show up on My Computer anymore. It still makes all the sounds of a hardware being plugged in, and it shows up on the Device Manager (which says that everything is working fine). The same thing happens when I plug it in to my laptop.

Hopefully it's just a bad enclosure and I haven't lost everything inside, but does anyone know any solutions?

Answer:Computer wont read External Hard Drive

First off, take the drive out and connect it as a slave to the desktop and see if the files are still there. Also, here are words to live by...

Remember: Data you don't have at least two copies of is data you don't care about.

I am getting a new computer and will be installing either the x64 or x32 bit version of Windows 7 and am looking into compatibility.

I had planned on just plugging in my external drive (plug-and-play) and am afraid I have totally confused myself.

My question is simple: Will Windows 7 run (read and write) my external hard drive? (and if so, should I go x32 or x64?)

Here?s what I have:

?Beyond Micro? external 320GB Serial ATA Hard Drive connected to my current laptop through a PC card adapter.

When I click on my ?Safely remove hardware? link it displays this option ?Silicon Image SiI 3512 SATALink Controller.?

I also ran a system information program called Everest which reports the following:
Under Storage, SCSI/RAID Controller: Silicon Image SiI 3512 SATALink Controller
Under Storage, Disc Drive: Hitachi HDT725032VLA360 SCSI Disk Device (298 GB)

I went to the Silicon Image site and the only ?3512? item they have is a ?SATALink PCI Express to 2-Port Serial ATA II Host Controller,? and I have no idea if this is what I have or not. It seems that if I approach the site from different angles I am getting different results. Now I find there: ?SiI 3512 ?PCI to 2 Port SATA150? and ?SATALink 2-Port PCI Host Controller.? I did download a 126 page data sheet. The cover says ?SiI PCI to Serial ATA Controller.?

This page MIGHT be the right one for the driver, but I am not sure if it?s for what I have.

Yes. It won't matter if you get the 32bit or 64bit version, but I recommend the 64bit version unless you have a laptop PC or older desktop PC. The 64bit version has no limitation on RAM usage; the 32bit can only address a maximum of 3.25gb or so (it depends on some other hardware factors like video memory usage, but it comes out to 3gb to a max of 3.5gb). I have 4 external hard drives that I use extensively, and the were all used previously with Windows XP. When Win7 hit the market, I saved what I wanted from my PC hard drive to the externals, then wiped XP and installed Win7 X64 and haven't looked back. All 4 of my externals work perfectly. You will not a need any drivers, they are built-in to Windows and have been since Windows ME which came out in 1999 (I think). The SATA port on the back of your PC is an eSATA port (the "e" is for "external") and it has a slightly different connector than a standard SATA drive port. Again, once you get Win7 installed in your system, and you install all the needed system drivers, the eSATA will function with an external hard drive just like an external hard drive that uses a USB port. The "Silicon Image Sil3512" is simply the motherboard SATA/RAID controller, and any drivers you may need for it will be included with the system or motherboard drivers CD, or should be available from the motherboar... I have an old Quantum Fireball SE 3.5 Series HD (capacity unknown). The owner tells me it runs on her old computer. I've hooked it up to my Dell Inspiron 1150 using a USB 2.0 to IDE cable and transformer. The power cable is connected. You can hear the disk turn. But my system doesn't read any other drive being present.
I tested this using a Seagate ST320014A. Again you can hear the disk turn. It 'registers' on the system but you can't read the disk.
I would appreciate any suggestions.

I have:

System Version: 5.01.2600
Processor: Pentium 4 (Speed 2398 MHz)
Physical RAM Installed: 254 MB

No, 98 won't read that drive. How much data is it? You could use a flash drive.

I was recently copying a heap of files to my new HP Simple Save external hard drive and all of a sudden it wouldn't let me, saying that it was read only.

I have googled what seems to be everything and tried a range of options including-
-unchecking read only option in properties
-using cmd.exe option to look at storage device and next to read only it said no
-registry files - found some instructions to change read only in storage device options, but there was no storage device options, there was storage, but no option to remove read only
-i have also ensured that i have enough permissions etc..

Some details about my computer are-

Asus F5
Windows Vista
AMD Athlon X2 64 (not sure if this is relevant?)

Would really appreciate some advice if anyone can help me?

Answer:HP External Hard drive - files are all read only and I can't change it

From what I have heard about those drives, it is a problem with the proprietary setup of the drive. It is classic HP stupidity. The drive is coupled with junkware, which eventually fails to work properly.

I know it sucks, but I would backup everything off that drive. Uninstall all the HP software and drivers related to it. Then go into the Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools\Computer Management\Storage. Kill all the partitions on the drive, setup a new one, reformat, and use it without all the HP junk.

After that, make sure to setup proper permissions on the new volume, and re-copy everything back. If you do not need NTFS security, then format it with exFat.

There should be a law against junkware..

I have recently bought a new laptop running Windows 7. I have an external hard drive which I used to use on an old laptop which ran Windows XP. When I plug the USB external hard drive into my new laptop running Windows 7, I can only open files as read only.

Why is the external hard drive locked? I only have one user account set up which is an administrator account.

Any ideas for solving this one?

Answer:External Hard Drive Files Locked As Read-Only

It's likely locked because your old machine had set the permissions as read only.

You'll need to take ownership of the drive and/or change the permissions.

Is there anyway to format the disk or remove bad sectors or read the disk???

Answer:hard disk read error

nope. Hard drives don't heal themselves, and once you get bad sectors, they are just going to multiply. Back up the data, and get a new HD.

If you had a caddy or one of these Adapter then you could connect the laptop drive to another PC which would confirm or rule out the HDD as the problem.

Sony desktop w/40G hard drive. It was partitioned at 18G for the C and the rest was a hidden D drive. The D drive simply contained i386, so why it had all that room I don't know.
The owner turned it off during windows and subsequently:
First was unable to start Winxp in any mode (safe, last known, etc).
The owner then put it into a Win98SE computer as a slave and started Win98SE. All folders/files/etc present.
She went online apparently and got the following advice and performed:
-returned drive to original pc, started up w/WinXP CD, started Recovery Console
-ran chkdsk/r - found unrecoverable errors.
-ran fixboot
-restarted pc w/o cd, and got NTDLR missing
-went back into Recovery Console and ran fixmbr
-restarted pc w/o cd, again got NTDLR missing
-removed hard drive again, put in as slave on the win98se machine, only sees one partition, containing i386, and is reporting the size at 10M (yes, M, not G).

This is where we are now. The primary issue is recovering the files (MyDocs) since every pic she took since her baby was born in March is in there - none printed or on CD.
Can anyone advise what steps I can take? The pc is with me now, and I have an XP pc and Win98SE pc that I can use to run any tools you think are appropriate.

Thanks - kimmer13

ps. i have partition magic, system mechanic, spinrite - if you think any of these would help.

Hi, Everyone!

This is my case:
I run a Win XP Pro SP2 on a 250 GB SATA hard disk. In itself, it works without problems.
But I've got another storage device, a 160 GB Maxtor ATA disk, which I use(d) for backup purposes.

A few months back this second disk started to behave strangely. Some files were not accessible, and in general, copying files to and from the disk took ages to complete. I suspected bad sectors were to be blamed, so I sought and found a solution, which is called HDD Regenerator. It had found and recovered several bad sectors on the disk. More, it had found and recovered several bad sectors each time I ran it, so I made it a habit to run HDD Regenerator regularly, as a preventive maintenance task. This way my files got accessible again, and I thought the problem was solved.

A week ago I experienced a severe worsening of the situation. I could not copy files from the drive at all, no matter how long I waited. I ran HDD Regenerator again, and the strange part is coming: It found no bad sectors at all! Then, in the last 4 days, the failing drive started to cause the system to reboot occasionally.

This day the situation is like this:
The OS boots normally, with or without the failing drive.
In "My Computer" I can see the failing drive and its partitions.
In Disk Management console I can even delete and create partitions on the disk.
But each time I try to read from or write to the disk, format it or even open it from "My Computer", it... Read more

I have an old 12.7 GB hard disk hooked up as secondary slave. A cd burner is on secondary master. The drive is formatted as FAT32. I am running XP home edition with the restore option disabled.

Here is the problem:

In DOS (from a bootdisk), the files appear and everything is normal. (can read and write to the drive).

In XP. The drive is unreadable, and gives the following message:

"this drive is not formatted, do you want to format this drive?"

How can I get XP to read this drive? It was working before, but all of a sudden just quit. I am assuming that since it is readable in DOS, then something is screwey with XP.

This drive is full of all of my ripped audio cds. It took me forever to rip them, I would really hate to see all my hard work go down the drain. Anybody have any ideas on how I can fix this thing?

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium OS.
I originally had a Windows Vista pc that had the cpu burn out on it.
I had the geeksquad slave the hard drive over from my old vista pc into my new windows 7 pc. It has been working without any problem at all. Then last night after installing .net framework RC (4 beta 2) I restarted my pc and the drive was not located in the My computer folder. The drive was an E: the E: drive is labeled a CD drive. So i enabled the S.M.A.R.T setting in the windows setup and now the E: cd drive has been removed, but it is still not recognized through my disc managment. What should I be doing in order to get my slave drive to appear again? I've tried a system restor eand everything and the chkdsk /f returned no errors, except last night it said something about something being fixed..I dont know what it did

i switched back to my old 32MB video card, and everything seemed ok. i went to display properties to tone down my screensaver, but after a few minutes of tweaking, everything started taking too long. after manually closing the applications, it happened again, and this time i was forced to restart from the button. that's when i got it. after the IDE detection screen, my 60gb UDMA IBM Desktar had the Disk Read Error. my 2nd drive, a notebook 12gig Deskstar, was my only backup, which i ironically had not backed up in a long time. so i transferrerd the data to the family computer and brought the 12 back to be reformatted in mine. this is all XP, mind you. ntfs, in fact. so installation copied the files, and restarted. unfortunately, it never went back into the rest of setup. it either restarted Windows XP setup from scratch, or automatically restarted the computer if the CD wasn't in. when i tried to boot from the 12gig, it made the same soft grinding noise that the 60gig did, and gave me the Disk Read Error. When i tried to put the family XP hard drive in my computer, i get the blue STOP screen. even worse, the 60gig isn't being recognized in the family computer. detection just stops when it gets to where it is (Secondary Master). it IS recognized in my computer tho. am i just screwed? i'm trying not to reformat the 60 gig because, there's a lot of important stuff on it. is there anything else i can try? my friends are telling me it may be a problem with... A while ago I was cleaning out the inside of my Compaq Presario desktop (it was very dusty) and I had it laying down on it's side. Well, last night I was trying to watch a Jackie Chan DVD and stood it up so I could use the DVD. A couple minutes later, after the DVD had just begun to play, everything froze. Firefox wouldn't open, iTunes wouldn't open, Windows Media Player wouldn't close, I couldn't even stop anything with task manager. So I turned rebooted my computer manually, and it wouldn't start. The Compaq screen at the beginning would show up, and then an error saying "Cannot read disk, press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart."

The only thing I can think of that could have caused this would be standing my computer up to watch the DVD damaged the hard disk. If this is the case, can it be fixed?

Answer:XP SP2 won't boot, says it can't read hard disk

One thing I forgot to add. Compaq has a recovery feature. From the Compaq screen at startup you press F10 and it apparently recovers your system automatically. I don't know if this will work since my C drive can't be read anyway, but if it is what will fix my computer then it won't hurt to do it. I have all of my word docs on Google docs, my email on Gmail, and my music is on my iPod i could just copy over to my computer. Just a thought...

Hi there,

Couple of days ago I removed rogue antivirus from my laptop. Now, I see continuous hard disk read on my laptop. How do I know which process is accessing my hard drive. I want to be sure that some remote program is not reading my hard drive!!

Answer:Continuous hard disk read

Download Process Explorer: Process Explorer and use it to see exactly what processes are running on your system.

If you're concerned it's a remote program accessing your computer, then disconnect the computer from the network (or unplug the modem to be absolutely sure) and if the activity stops, then it's possible the network is causing it (though it doesn't mean some remote program is accessing your system although that is possible - especially if you didn't clear up the entire infection and it granted someone that access which still exists even if you removed part of the infection or all of the original infection but not what it did to your system).

That gets us to: are you certain you've removed the virus? Normal programs sometimes aren't enough and may show your system as clean when it is still infected (especially if it was a bad virus - do you know its name?). We have a virus removal expert here who can assist you in confirming that it has been totally removed (along with any files it might have added or modified in the process). If you want, I can request she come and assist you in confirming your system is clean. Even I would seek her advice if I had been infected and obviously still concerned (or you wouldn't have posted this question and mentioned the infection). She will be happy to help you and you can then be certain you're OK. Just say the word and I'll request she visit ASAP. I STRONGLY recommend this.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Here are the specifications for my computer:

Processor: AMD 3500+ Venice core
Hard Disk: Western Digital Enhanced 40GB IDE
Optical Drive: LG Multiformat
OS: Windows XP Professional
GPU: MSI Geforce 256mb 6600
RAM: DDR [email protected] 1GB

i basically have already set up this computer. However i used a Seagate SATA 200GB harddrive. Now i want to install this WD second disk but im not sure how to go about it. So far i have tried disconnecting the working Seagate and just connecting the WD. However i get the error 'Media Test Failure' 'Please check cable'. All cables are connected. The IDE is in IDE 2 slot on my MOBO. However i have tried both slots. Below is some information about the ancient WD Drive i have.

WD Caviar 40 GB EIDE Hard Drive
Family: BB
Model: WD400BB
Formatted Capacity: 40 GB
Interface: EIDE 100 MB/s
Transfer Rate (Buffer To Host): 400 Mbits/s (Max)
Rotational Speed: 7,200 RPM (nominal)
Buffer Size: 2 MB
Form Factor: 3.5 Inch
For all the info you could ever want about this drive check out this web page .

I would appreciate any help given on how to install and configure the second drive. The hard drive light does flicker so i know there is something going on.

Thanks for reading this thread.

Answer:Hard Disk Problem Please Read

so they are both EIDE drives?

Are you connecting them both on the same IDE cable? if so don't for get to set one as master and one as slave with the jumpers.
Also make sure you're using an 80 conductor ribbon, though i'm sure you must be.

other than that it doesn't sound good.

Edit: Ok so the seagate is SATA , if the WD is the only drive on the ribbon and and you have the IDE enabled in BIOS then there shouldn't be a problem. Try a different Ribbon maybe.

I have a firewire/USB external hard drive (Western digital). Recently the hard drive died. I bought a new hard drive 120GB Maxtor Diamondmax plus ATA/133 HDD (Old one was 80GB) to replace. When I put it in and try to format it in Windows XP, it will only read 32GB (31.4). If I put this hard drive internally into a tower, I can get it to work only if I boot with the new hard drive boot disk first, then reboot with windows. I tried a friends external hard drive...took the drive out and put it into my external hard drive box as well as DVD burner (external) box...worked fine.
