External Hard Disk v/s Internal Hard Disk in External Enclosure

Question: External Hard Disk v/s Internal Hard Disk in External Enclosure

hi all,

i would like to ask you a very basic question:

What is the difference between an external hard disk and an internal hard disk mounted on external enclosure?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure risky in terms of loosing the data?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure reliable to use?

kindly let me know as there is a vast difference in the price of these hard disks. The external hard disk is costing more and if i use internal hard disk in external enclosure price is very much reduced.

my only concern about using internal hard disk in external enclosure is the reliability.

thanks in advance,

regards,

Preferred Solution: External Hard Disk v/s Internal Hard Disk in External Enclosure

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

What is the difference of 3.5 external hard disk (e.g. WD My Book) vs a 3.5 internal hard disk fixed into an enclosure to work like an external hard disk?

Are both good to be use as an external drive to store backup?

What 3.5 enclosure is good?

Thanks

Answer:3.5 external hard disk vs 3.5 internal hard disk with enclosure?

What do you mean fixed into an enclosure to work like an external drive? Are you referring to a My Book 3.0 VIA USB 3.0.... vs.... an internal SATA III SSD or HDD? Be a little more specific.

If I am saving a backup to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 USB external hard disk

1. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 3.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

2. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 2.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

Thanks

Answer:Speed of saving to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 external disk?

There's no definitive answer, it would all depend on which internal drives you had (SSD/HDD, SATA 6GB, SATA 3GB) and which external drives you had and their relative transfer speeds. It's all just guesswork without that info.

Couple of hours ago my Windows 7 could not recognize my external USB hard disk (Maxtor Basic). It came up on Disk Management and Device Manager but not on My Computer. However I fixed it (by deleting its line off regedit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices, plugging out the ext. HD and plugging back in). Windows automatically installed the drivers and I could access the drive.

But now Windows shows my Maxtor as a fixed disk drive, instead of "devices with removable storage". I still have the option to "Safely remove hardware and eject media" from taskbar, however I rather have Windows treating it as a Removable USB Storage so that the disk can sleep when not in use. I am pretty sure it has something to do with regedit, so any help would be appreciated.

Answer:USB external hard disk shows up as internal fixed disk

Welcome to Windows 7 Support Forums, Sactyr.
A word of caution! Its never a good idea to alter your register,
IMHO please review your device manager and check your devices for your disk drives, check for any warnings in the driver area.
I'm attaching my screenshot for comparison as I have a similar configuration.

What size External Hard Drive Disk Enclosure do I need?

My trusty old Dell Latitude d600 finally died on me - the monitor and screen needs replaced and it would be cheaper to buy a new laptop (apparently).

I want to take the HD out to retrieve my stuff - which size of portable External Hard Drive Disk Enclosure do I need? My new laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6000 and the HD looks the same as my old one.

Do I need a 2.5" enclosure (like this one);

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB2-0-2-...es_HardDriveEnclosures_RL&hash=item3a68627d72

or a 3.5" size like this?;

hope u can help! thanks in advance

well ive run out of hard disk space like every other laptop user and i wanted to try and set up an external kit

what i had in mind was to use a PCMCIA card to IDE or SATA connector to connect via the pcmcia slot to a normal IDE or SATA internal hard disk drive in an enclosure...

is this possible or a pipe dream?

if it is possible - will the connected hard disk have the capacity/speed to boot up an operating system or run apps off it?

also what would anyone recommend - an IDE or SATA HD considering the fact that its connected via a PCMCIA card and its performance is/isnt limited by it...

really hope someone can help as i havent got a clue

I have been looking for a 2TB portable external hard drive with USB 3.0 or equivalent. I'm now thinking seriously about getting a WD:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1455023&CatId=4227

I'm hearing on other threads that external drives are not built for continuous use (cooling has been mentioned as an issue) and that one needs to go the more expensive route of an internal hard drive in a separately purchased enclosure.

I would prefer having a secondary hard drive running concurrently with my computer. I know cooling devices are available for the internal HDD + enclosure combinations. Are they available for external hard drives?

I intend to have online backup to supplement hardware backup.

Answer:Your view on subject of external hard drive vs. internal HD in an enclosure?

Personally, I prefer buying a highly rated bare drive and placing it in a fan cooled enclosure - especially if it will be running for hours at a time.

The best internal drives (like WD Caviar Black or RE series) have a five year warranty, versus 1-2 years for pre-built external drives. To me, it's worth a few extra bucks versus taking chances on losing data due to an overheating drive.

However, when I moved hard drive to external enclosure, hard drive clicked for 15 minutes, and is now silent. What's going on?

I will enclose here my complaint which I send to motherboard maker Gigabyte, regarding USB external hard disk problem. Please read it and if anybody knows how to solve this, thanks.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My computer has external hard drive connected to USB 2.0 port(s), which is extremely slow. Drive is Transcend StoreJet. No drivers exist for it. It works perfectly for other I/O operations like copy, paste, delete, etc. When I try to make hard disk image with any program, and store it on Transcend Store Jet, speed starts with 50MB/s but drops to nearly zero in few minutes. You can see example on attached picture. It is the same with any program. Disk image would take more than one day to complete, if it completes at all. Actually, I never managed to finish image with any disk imaging software. I tried all usual software for that: Paragon, Aomei, Acronis, EaseusToDo, Drive XML, etc. Are there any USB or other drivers which are responsible for this issue? Can Gigabyte be serious regarding its costumers and provide them solution in order to use USB ports for most important thing (backup)? In this case, making disk image is totally impossible. USB 2.0 ports have speed оf 480 Mbit/s, theoretical. This is far cry from situation here. So, ... Read more

Answer:Problem with slow (impossible) disk image making on USB 2.0 external hard disk

This could be any issue causing your problem , software , usb drive may have errors on it / or ?
Imaging your 150 Gig via Usb will take time { Mine are about 40-50 Gig } Operating System And Programs Only.

I personally partition my main Drive eg: c:\ and d:\ and so only the operating system is on C;\
Then use the D;\ to store your personal files. , this way your c:\ wont keep growing in size as you are storing everything there.
If you cant actually do anything with the computer because of warranties as you stated "just serviced" , ask them why you cant Image Drive.

Options:
1/ Try another hard drive to backup to.{ Usb will always be slower } than directly connected to Mobo.
2/ Use Mini Tool Partition Wizard [ Free } to create another partition - http://www.partitionwizard.com/partitionmagic/partition-windows-7-system.html
3/ Remove all Temp Files / Restore Points / etc with Ccleaner { Free ] - https://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER
this will reduce C:\ size to minimal size { defrag drive also }.
4/ Use any program to Image C:\ { I use Acronis }. to the D:\ Backup Folder.
5/ Then copy the image to any portable drive or external if need be.
6/ Use the D:\ for your personal files and folders as a backup also.

Sometimes you have to do things yourself - than rely on Service Centres and Costs.
If you run a Business then you claim all your costs incurred.

All this will take time but you will have backups and feel at ease.

I have a problem regarding my external Toshiba hard disk 500 GB where it can?t be detected in my computer and also disk management. I have formatted the external HD since I was asked to format it when an error popped up.
So I formatted it and after the formatting completed, I tried to connect the hard disk to my Windows Win 7 laptop. When I connect it to the laptop, it can?t be detected and yet the hard disk is blinking with its white light like it used to when it is connected to the laptop. I tried the disk management thingy, but it can?t detect my hard disk. I tried in other laptops but the result is same
What can I do to make it better? Please help me.

Answer:External hard disk not detected in My Computer and in Disk Management

First off, how old is your Toshiba external HDD? Also, when it starts to spin up, do you hear any sort of clicking or whining noise?

If you hear any noises that sound off, it's possible your external HDD is failing.

When you formatted it, what file system did you use to do so? Because sometimes even if Windows can't detect it, I have had success with booting with a Ubuntu Live CD, and then connecting the external HDD in order to format it that way. It all has to do with how Windows formats HDD's and how Ubuntu and other Linux systems do.

If you can I recommend downloading Ubuntu onto a CD and boot to it on one of your computers, in the Live CD mode, so it doesn't install anything. Once its loaded, plug in the Toshiba and try to format it as NTFS (this is important, because Ubuntu doesn't use it as a native file system, so you need to make sure that NTFS is selected on the format window, not EXT4 or the other types of Linux OS File Systems)

If it doesn't work, post back here, and I will see if I can help you some more. Also feel free to PM me if you have any other issues.

Regards,
-Alex

My computer keeps refusing to start up. I have to re-install windows each time. Hard disk keeps making a "funny" noise. I have an 80gb hard drive and have used 40gb so far. I want to back up everything incase my hard drive fails. Could I backup to an external disk drive? would I need to install windows on the external drive. or is there a better way to save all my files, downloads, and software? When I bought the PC it came with software already installed and a recovery disk. But obviously I dont want restore to factory settings as I will loose everything. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I have an external hard disk which got corrupted. When i connect the disk through USB it shows as an unknown device in the disk management with no option to format.

In My computer the device is showing as H: drive but unable to access it. It asks if i want to format or not but when i go for format it does not do it. I want to erase the disk completely as of now. What should i do??

I tried to load it from linux but there it shows as Device Error. Disk Failure is Imminent.

Can something be done or is it a hardware failure.

Answer:External Hard disk showing as RAW in disk management

Sounds like the drive is failing or the circuitry in the enclosure is faulty.

I would first remove the drive from the enclosure and hook it up as a slave to a desktop PC. See if you can then access it. If you can, then post back for further instructions with the version of your OS.

Gday

I have emailed Paragon and am awaiting there reply, but you guys seem to know a lot more and try and solve the problem

Up to this point I have used either Acronis or Paragon for my backups, I prefer Paragon over Acronis, mainly because the restore by Paragon is far quicker.

I have both bootable CD's, but in this instance I would like to concentrate on Paragon.

I downloaded Paragon's Advanced Recovery CD. 2009 Build 6730. Put it in my rom and booted ....... looked at a black screen for 10 minutes. Removed it and rebooted, it got stuck at the loading of Vista, then I got another black screen no hard drive movement.

Rebooted again, this time with the regular Paragon bootable CD. It booted into the recovery console.

Now this is where things go from bad to worse. I tried finding my OS, after a lengthy period I received an error disk 2 i/o fault!!! ....... no operating system found.

Now disk 2 is my external hard drive where my backups are kept.

So I rebooted with the CD in, went into the recovery console and clicked on "safe restore", after playing the waiting game I get a message disk 2 i/o fault!!!.

Took out the Paragon CD, put in the Vista one, tried a repair, but there was no OS to repair .

So I installed Vista, and because I didn't want to have to reinstall all of my programs again (yer lazy I know, but that's what backup's are for).

Checked with the fresh install, that my two external hard drives, had there drivers and were present. They were ... Read more

[Seriously need help] External hard disk causes hard drive failures & OS crashes
The thread is rather long. Only read what you think important. Skip the rest!

We have a serious but mysterious problem. We have spent already one week but drawing a blank.
Two hard drives have been crashed and failed (unreadable). One computer has hung a few times unexpectedly and had one weird restart (no memory dump produced).
I suspect all the recent problems have to do with the new USB external hard disk (Buffalo MiniStation Lite: HD-PE250U2).

Formatting USB external hard disk

Originally I would like to use the program given by Buffalo to format the external drive once but we failed. We simply used Windows to reformat the drive into NTFS. I did not use the TurboSpeed advertised by Buffalo, or run its free program.

The first time we met the problem.
We were trying to help a friend to backup data on an old drive, about a few years old. We plugged in the Buffalo USB portable hard drive and transferred a whole lot of files to the drive. Restarted. Tranferred again. Several cop/cut-and-paste operations were active.

Hello and welcome to the sevens forum.

First I don't think you can tell when your external hard drive was used, unless you have something on your system that would tell you if it was used or messed with your kind a out of luck so to speak.

You can always set up a password on your external hard drive to lock people out.

for some reason when i try to access my external hd, it wont open and says its not formatted. Unfortunately i have data on there that id like to keep. is there a way to recover/undo(the problem) my HD?

it was NTFS? I doubt running check disk would be of help, or accessing via a Linux Live CD. Sounds like you deleted the partition. I wanted to buy an external hard disk. My understand is Lacie, Freecom, Sony are good makes.

I looked in the sub 100 pound range, and came up with this list.
can some one suggest how i can narrow it down and select one hard disk, i am even more confused since ext. USB2 hard disks from the same make having quite a difference in their sizes are more or less for the same price.

can you suggest some features which an external hard disk should have?

Thanks to your help my PC is now usable and quick again. On your advice I downloaded CC Cleaner it really is FREE and fantastic! While I was looking for a fix I downloaded all my photos onto CDs. Now I'm thinking of buying an external hard disk. I have thousands of pictures and I reckon a 500GB portable disk would do it. Has anybody else done this and does it work ? Any advice please ? B.J.

Answer:External hard disk

An external drive is good for temporary but they are still volatile, meaning there is a possibility for errors i.e drive crashing, cant access data etc, a better long term solution is to burn your pics to DVD-Rs and store them safely away.

So, i tried to pen my external hard disk,
and this is what happened:
The USB Protection i use is USB Disk Security and i dont know if this options (in image) does something about it..
Thanks in advance

Answer:External Hard Disk Help

This most likely is due to USB Disk Security software, if you changed something recently within, I'd try to reverse it.

Question: external hard disk

Hi
I was thinking of going for an external second disk for my machine.
It woudl essentially serve as a backup drive.
I looked at some drives, and they are USB2, i was wondering if i installed windows xp on it, could i boot up from the external drive. Just in case, my old hard disk fell over, so i would still be in biz till i get a primary hard drive.

i was looking at manufacturers can you guys suggest a good make
came across these names:- freecom, lacie, hitachi, western digital, iomega, ximeta, archos

what do you guys think of this one

Answer:external hard disk

Rookie, i'm not positive about this but I think it can be done as long as your BIOS gives you that option. If you install it successfully and go into you BIOS menu, you could change the boot order so that it searches for your external hard drive first.

hello guys,

first of all im using win 8,1 64 bit .
its been some time that i cant install the windows updates.
when i hit install and it says that is downloading the updates it freezes.
so without the new updates i see that i cant safely remove my hard disk(external)
so im removing my external hard drive just like that
and today my 2tb seagate external became raw(one of the two partitions)
i really need your help here to restore the disk to its normal status and find a solution with win updates cause i dont want this to happen again.

wating asap for your answer
thanks in advance

Answer:raw external hard disk

Firstly, I would not have the external drive attached when doing updates.

That being said I would download Testdisk for Windows and unzip the file to a folder on your desktop. Run Testdisk and do a QuickSearch. After a QuickSearch does it detect both partitions on the external drive? Highlight the RAW partition and press the "P" key. Do you see your files on the RAW partition?

Windows  This is the file to download

If doing a QuickSearch does not detect both partitions then do a deeper Search.

Do you have enough space on your internal drive to copy the files from the RAW partition?

hello!my brother bought an 80Gb 2.5" external hard diskfor my pc. I transferred 74.Gb and have 37.9 Mb left. Butnext to total size it says 74.5Gb. Where has therest of the 5.5Gb gone??? Can someone explain?Thank you!!

Answer:external hard disk

It is because manufacturers use 1000 bytes for a KB when in fact it is 1024 bytes. So your 80GB was never 80GB80,000,000,000,000 /1024 /1024/ 1024 = 74.5 ish

Question: External Hard Disk

I have a LaCie 250gb External Drive - originally I had three partitions, one of 100+GB (G), one of 50+ (P)and one at 1gb (O). The latter proved to be too small and, using PartitionMagic 8 I resized it to 2gb (O) -taking the extra, I thought, from the 50+ (P)partition. However, in the process I seem to have 'lost' the largest partition (G) - containing my backup image. Anyone have an idea what happened? I have run Partitionmagic again - it lists the drive and unlike Partitions O and P which are marked as status 'None' the G Partition is marked 'active'.Please assist in unravelling this problem.

Question: External hard disk

Does anyone know of any external hard disk drives that run on linux?

Answer:External hard disk

New external hard drives use USB 2.0, Firewire, etc. These devices are immediately recognized by Windows XP and 2000 as soon as they're connected. Doesn't Linux support this? I thought it would since it uses the same kernel as XP and 2000. I don't use myself.

price factor not more than... 60-70$

well thats the cash i have for now.......

please answer to with ur best ability.......

Answer:which external hard disk to go for......?

Well i myself would buy a high capacity internal hard drive an then put it in a enclosure, external drives that have a decent storage space tend to get pricey. For instance £45 for a 320gb drive an £15 - £20 for a enclosure makes a big difference in the price.

If you where just saving sage details on there or text files ect a smaller drive would be fine, but programs, ISO files, films ect take up a lot of space.

First of all, hello everyone!

I have a Dell XPS laptop and use an 80 GB external hard drive for storage. I actually found a site that has the drive which can be found here:
Toshiba (MK8032GAX) 80 GB IDE Hard Drive Product Reviews and Price Comparison - Epinions.com

But I am running out of space and was thinking of buying a new drive, say at least 250 GB.

I checked with the local computer store and they had 320GB for CAD 72.00, which I found quite reasonable.

The only thing is I am not sure if I should get SATA or IDE, which the guy at the store asked me and I had no idea what the difference was. I think the one I have right now is IDE (it says on the site I posted above) but I don't know much more than that.

My main concern is speed, as I will be using the new one to store movies and it would be better if I could just watch the movies straight from the drive rather than having to copy it onto the pc because the speed is too slow.

Also, as I have a laptop, it would have to connect via a USB port, so I would need an enclosure (or hard drive box), which I am aware of!

So any advice on would be much appreciated

Answer:External hard disk drive?

If you have USB 2.0 you have a max of 480 mb/s. Sata gives you either 150 or 300 mb/s and IDE gives you either 100 or 133 mb/s.

Long story short use Sata because it will use more of the available 480.

Hi,I work from two pc's - one at the office (both xp pro), and one at home. So that I always have the same files with me all the time, I work directly from a portable hard disk. I know that this probably isn't the best idea in the world, but it's worked perfectly for almost a year.At the office, it still works fine, but at home, the usb drive keeps disconnecting, and I have to re-boot every time it happens, and I have lost work through it several times. It's only started doing this recently, and it's a real pain! The only thing I can think that I've changed, is that I've changed my anti-virus from Bullguard to AVG (free edition). Could that be the cause?Any tips would be much appreciated!Alex

Hello,
I brought a new 1 TB seagate free-agent external hard drive. I connected it to my laptop which runs windows VISTA.
when i connected it for the first time, there was no problem in my laptop recognizing it or its ( wotever installation if you call it so ). so I transfered all my data as a back from my laptop ( aprx abt 100gb) to the new hard drive, and even double checked it on the new hard drive and everything was fine. later i disconnected the hard drive via the SAFELY remobe hardware. Later after abt half an hour I tried connecting back the hard drive to my same laptop, but it would not just show up. i tried everything liek trying to restart my system, connecting and disconnecting my external hard drive, changing the connecting USB cable, tried on different systems ( vista, XP) but the it would just not work( but the light on the hard drive does glow up). I ve noticed that for teh first few mintues( say 5-10 mins) there is some kind of slight sound from the hard drive Now all the data is on this hard drive and i am lost. I cannot affrord a data recovery options as its very expensive.
so i was just praying and hoping that someone could please help me out of this mess. Can someone out there please help me .
Regards.

I have a freecom 80gb external drive connected to my windows 2000 pro system. At the moment it is formatted NTFS. I want to reformat to FAT32 because I want to give it to my dad who is running windows ME.There are 4 bad sectors on the drive that I can't fix. The disk works OK on my system but when I try to format back to fat 32 using disk management tool it get to 99% then I get an error saying the volume is too large.Does anyone have any ideas on any disk tools that could help me out or just any pointers would be great.Thank you.

Answer:External Hard Disk problems

Windows XP, and it may be the same for 2000, cannot format a partition larger than 32GB as FAT32, although it can use a larger partition. Can the drive itself, if it is a standard 3.5" hard drive, be removed from the enclosure and connected directly to the PC's IDE cable? With a Windows 98 "boot floppy", it could then be FDISK'd to remove the "non-DOS" partition, repartitioned and formatted as FAT32 in DOS.To create a partition larger than 32GB in DOS, use FDISK 1.2.1 from click here

Hello. I have a Seagate GoFlex 1TB External Hard Disk. I had been using it for quite sometime without any problems. Now it doesn't get detected in "My Computer" window. I checked in Computer Management and the drive is detected in "Device Manager". However, in "Disk Management", it shows as Unallocated. I am extremely perplexed as this drive had a lot important softwares and books and I don't want to format it to make the hard disk re-detectable. Is there any way to restore it to its previous state without formatting?

Any help will be appreciated.

Answer:External Hard Disk Not Detecting

First thing that comes to mind is to shut down the computer then unplug the power for about ten second then plug back in and restart. If that doesn't work and you have another computer or laptop that you can use then test it on those.

A last resort would be to take the HDD out of its holder and plug it directly into the computer using any extra internal plugins. If you do not have any extra ones then unplug the DVD/CD drive and use those. This will give you an idea if there is any thing wrong with the HDD. . .Good luck.

I recently installed a program to allow my PC to read Mac formatted hard disks. However, it did not work and from then forward, my PC is unable to detect all other external hard disks, I've tried a few. The drives are not even showing on disk management. The lights on the hard disk do light up with I plug them in but nothing happens.

Is anyone able to solve this mystery for me. BTW this problem only occurred after I installed the above mentioned program.

Answer:Can't Detect External Hard Disk

Well, what's the program and have you tried removing it?
There are simple ways to format external HDDs so they can be used both on PC and Mac. It would be a good idea to format HDDs you know you'll use on both platforms this way. Instructions are usually included with the drive, at least both my LaCie and WD included them.
Hope this helps,

I just bought a new external hard disk a few weeks ago, a Samsung 80gb one. It was working fine until a few days ago. I plugged it in as usual and added some files to it and cleared the recycle bin. About 20 minutes later I plugged it in again and this message appeared: "USB Device Not Recognised: One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message." I tried the troubleshooting thing but it didn't help. Nothing appears under disk management. In device manager, it appears as unknown device and says that no drivers are installed for the device. When I tried it out again a few hours later it worked well again. But a few days later until now, the same thing happened everytime I plugged it in, either that or nothing happens at all. Is there any way I could solve the problem? I'm sure sure I did not bump it or anything. Thanks for the help!

Answer:External Hard Disk Malfunction

First, do you have this plugged in directly to the USB ports on the motherboard ( back of computer) or thru a hub? many external drives must be plugged in directly tot he motherboard rear USB ports to work correctly.

if it is plugged in directly to the mobo then you need to determine if the Device is at fault or your system is. try the device on another computer if it works with no problem then you know your system is the problem. if it doesnt work then Return the device for a refund or replacement.

If it si the system that is the problem the most likely cuplrit's are 1. the usb controler hub is defectivee or going bad. 2. YOur PSU has unstable voltages and the fluctuations are causing the problem. Check your voltages with a program like SpeedFan. pay particular attention to the +3.3 Volt rail.

What is the safest way to protect data on an external hard drive, when using the hard drive on computers other than your own.

Is there a good recommended software I can use to encrypt my hard drive and have it available to be decrypted on another computer and to keep all the encryption software on the same drive?

I have heard of some simple security programs that come with some hard drives, but I'm looking for an open source or similar solution that is well documented in terms of security.

I would like to take a 1 terabyte hard drive around to different places and I want to protect my information.

My home computer is Windows 7 Professional and I will use windows computers elsewhere also. What kind of portable software is available?

Or ... did I answer my question. Is the best bet, to simply encrypt files with something like pgp?

Answer:Safe use of external hard disk

Welcome
I am not one of the security people, but I have learned a trick and use it myself. If possible turn off the Hard Drive at night. Those creeps out there writing, virus and trying to steal information often work at night, because you are probably asleep and will not notice unusual activity on your computer. In addition if you turn off the hard drive at night, and when not in use, less chance that a virus caught will spread to the hard drive, when you initially catch it.

Hi,

I?ve just installed win7 on my laptop, before of it I had XP. In XP when I saffetly remove my hard disks after a while (5 seconds aprox) it turned off, i.e. it just didn?t vibrate more and as I think it means that it stoped to take energy from the laptop. My external HD use just one usb for data and energy. I post this thread because when I saffetly remove the same external HD in Win7, after it says that it is possible to disconnect it the HD remains vibrating, i.e. taking energy from the laptop issue that worry me because I feel that if I disconnect it in this way I will damage it.

Please tell me what could I do to fix it.

Excuses for my english hope you could help me.

Thanks for your attention,

M

Answer:How to turn off external hard disk

Does it have an external power supply as well? If it does it should have a switch to power it down. How are you telling it to shut down?

I have a Seagate External Hard Disk connected to my Vista computer by USB. I do not keep my Hard Disk switched on all the time because I only use it for extra storage. I never usually shut down my Computer, as I find sleep mode excellent. My problem is that often, when I switch off the HD and try to switch it on again at a later date, the computer does not recognise it. It does not register on Windows Explorer. Switching the HD off and on does not cure it. This does not happen every time, but when it does, the only way I can cure it is to do a restart, which I find takes too long on Vista. The restart solves the problem every time. I there any cure for this problem. Incidentally, every time I switch off the HD, I go through the 'Safely Remove Hardware' routine. And I have another Freecom HD which never gives me this problem, although it is used very infrequently. Also My USB devices work through a powered hub, but by-passing the hub does not make a difference, and I never have this difficulty with any of my other USB devices. Allan.

Hi,I recently bought a Vantec NexStar 3 external HDD enclosure (internal SATA to USB 2.0 and eSATA), and mounted a Maxtor 300Gb. drive inside. The PC it's connected to has a Gigabyte motherboard; I'm running Windows XP Home Edition w/ SP3. The issue is that though the external drive works fine, it spins down after 2 minutes of inactivity. Every time I want to access it, it has to "wake up" which takes a number of seconds. This doesn't sound like much but I find it intensely annoying. I can't find any Windows settings that would account for this; hard disks are set to "Never" with regard to spinning down for power saving. Any ideas as to what is going on here? This really is a nuisance.

I am thinking of purchasing an external HDD (or an enclosure plus IDE HDD, which many of you appear to recommend).

The drive would mainly be used to backup and store data. However, I use an ibook running Mac OS X while my better half runs an intel notebook running Win XP.

Is it possible to necessary or possible to partition the HDD so that we can both use it to store our respective data?

Answer:External Hard Disk: Windows + Mac Use

Definatelly.

Windows and OSX both can read and write to FAT32 partitions. When formatting the disk, you might need to use a 3rd party program like partition magic due to Windows being unable to format partitions above 32GB.

Just keep in mind the size of your partitions on that drive. Under OSX, you can't read partitions over 127GB in size.

For any other questions, take a peek at this article. It has some interesting solutions to what you're looking to accomplish.

What OS version are you using with the 1TB drive? Are you using the data security bundled feature software that came with this drive?I had a 1.5TB external drive run into a similar issue also a WD drive. I ended up having to carefully open the external drive enclosure and remove the small SATA hard drive and install it internally as an internal 1.5TB SATA drive into my desktop computer to regain access to my data after saving  a little over 1TB of data to the drive. Here is the model I had that I voided the warranty on to regain access to my data/drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236188  *I locked myself out of my data by accident early on forgetting my own password I set on it, and did away with having this data security WD bundled software having to run to access my data on my drive. I dumped the partitions and created new partitions and ran into issues later on with these drives.I was using mine with USB 2.0 on both Windows XP Pro SP3 and Windows 7 Home Premium. The one day the drive would not work on any computers I had. Tried different USB cable etc with no luck. Stuck drive to my ear and heard it spinning, just wasn't talking to computers. Contacted WD and they said that I could send the drive back to them and get a replacement, however to get my data back would come at an additional free. I decided to keep this drive and void my warranty by cracking it open and installing it internally to a desktop computer instead that had ... Read more

I currently have two external hard disk drives I am having major problems with. One is a SeaGate Free Agent and the other a Hitachi which seems actually to be a Western Digital internally.

Both of them have recently stopped working. When I say stopped working I plug them into the USB port and both of them spin and light up but they continue to spin and never mount or connect properly. I can see the Hitachi is making some connection when I look in syslog but I don't know what to make of it.

I have attached segments of the syslog where the Hitachi was plugged in and then removed. However nothing to report from the syslog when the SeaGate was plugged in or removed.

The Hitachi was plugged in at about 11:03:15secs and unplugged at 11:06:15secs. I plugged it in again at 11:07:05secs and unplugged it again at 11:10.

The SeaGate is under warranty but I am concerned about sending it in with the personal data on it. I have tried using SeaTools suggested by SeaGate but it does not recognise the drive. Are then any other ways I can retrieve the info of this drive or at worst ensure all data has been removed before sending back for a Warranty Return?

The Hitachi is not under Warranty but the supplier has offered to replace it. Again I would like to do everything possible to retrieve the data on it, or at worst ensure everything is deleted.

I have also tried plugging both of the drives into my girlfriend's OLD Sony Vaio but it did not recognise either of them as well.

My brand new hard disk slid off the sideboard on to the floor
Now it does not spin - has anybody stripped down a Seagate hard disk?
Apart from throwing it away, can anybody give me some advice as to how I might get it working again?
Thanks.

Answer:EXTERNAL HARD DISK - NO SPIN

I would pull it out of the enclosure and hook it directly to your computer in case the issue is with the enclosure and not the hard drive.

Hi everyone please help...
my Toshiba external hard disc also facing the same problem can not recognize, and once to plug in the message pomp out as below:-
"USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message"
Can someone help in kind please.. thanks all..

Answer:Toshiba external hard disk

Yeah Reine, my older Passport drive will do that too sometimes cause the data cable is a bit finicky. I'd just unplug the external and power it down. Wait a few, then plug it back up to USB and power it back on. If that dont work, throw in a computer reboot, before u start messing with driver uninstalls and such.

hello guys ,
i have a 1 tb external HD and it used to work perfectly until 5 days ago . the HD takes forever to load and if i didn't wait for it to fully load and tried to enter one of the files it tells me that windows explorer is not responding and everything disappears for like 20 seconds ( i can only see my wallpaper). the HD fell down from me but it wasn't a hard fall and the problems didn't start right after the fall .
so guys can anyone help ?
and sorry for the terrible english.

Answer:problems with my external hard disk

You might want to run a diagnostic check on your external hard drive to see if that fall damaged it. You could check on the manufacturer's website for a diagnostic tool or you could run SeaTools from Seagate.

SeaTools for Windows | Seagate

If any issues are discovered it may be time to save your data and replace the hard drive.

Hey!

I have win7 on my PC. I also have an external hard disk. I was wondering, can i install windows XP on my external hard disk ( which is partitioned) and expect to be able to use it, on whatever computer i plug it to?

Also, will this effect my computers speed? Since its installed on my external hard disk and not on the computers one?

Answer:Installing XP on an external hard disk?

Can it be done yes, will it work as you want it to, short answer no. Why? Because Windows XP will discover that new hardware has been installed and require you to re-activate it when you move it from machine to machine. Plus you will need to modify the way the machine boots so you can pick an OS or try to get the machine to boot USB first always. If boot USB first is on then when the drive is plugged in you will get Windows XP and when it is unplugged you get Windows 7. Another point; this would be considered illegal use of the OS by Microsoft.

Hey,

I have a Maxtor 200GB ONETOUCH II hard drive and it shows up in My Computer, but when I click on it, it says hard disk is ot accessible, the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. I have years of school papers and stuff on this...How do I get it back? Someone please help, freaking out here. By the way, I am running windows server, I have not been able to find any software that is compatible, so leave suggestions please.

Thanks

Answer:external hard disk problems

Try the thing with another computer or at least another operating system (a Live CD?).

Take the hard drive out of the enclosure and see if it works when connected directly inside a computer.

ZAR lets you restore 4 folders at a time for free I believe, so you can throw that at the disk when everthing else fails.

Next time, make backups of your important stuff

Hey Everyone!

I installed the firefox portable in my external hard disk and use it at the library computer.

One thing very strange is all the setup of firefox e.g. proxy, addons, and the open tab history are gone after I unplug it from the library computer.

Looks like it has to do with the permission setting on the external hard disk.

Can you tell me how to change the permission on my external hard disk?

In addition, say if I want to use my external hard disk as the portable computer that I have all the application installed and ready for use on any third computer. Is there any application/platform can help me to achieve that?

Thanks for your help

Answer:How to re-set the permission on external hard disk

This should be in the Windows Vista forum (as you are talking about permissions I'm assuming Vista and you list your o/s as Vista). Perhaps a mod could shift it to the right place?

Hi,When I attach my external harddrive I can't see it in 'This PC'.When I look in 'Device Manager' it shows up as 'EXT HDD 1021' The drivers for this device are not installed.I use the drive to backup my computer. The backup using the external hard drive worked in December 2014.I have tried the external hard drive on my old laptop and it works no problems. How can I get the drivers back?I'm running Windows 8.1 64 bit.

Answer:external hard disk not shown in this pc

hi ro51,

Welcome to the Forums.

If you insert another USB storage device (e.g., Flashdrive) on the same port, are you able to see it in "This PC"  under Windows Explorer?

If other storage devices are not automatically detected, can you try the following:
- Open Device Manager > Other Devices
- Right click on the 'EXT HDD 1021 > choose Update Driver Software > 'Browse for driver software on your computer
- Select Browse and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository and ensure that Include subfolders is checked.

When finished, hit Next and observe if the USB storage driver gets installed and see if you can now see the USB external HDD.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards

Hi Guys,

Would like to seek your assistance on this matter, I tried opening video files in my Seagate hard disk but it seems that there are some issues:

01) Hard disk lags when clicking on it.
02) All files are in there, but when I open the file it lacks
03) Some files cannot be opened (VLC says bad descriptors)

Tried looking for answers online, it could be some bad sectors or bad descriptors, Am currently doing a CHKDSK. Here is the current report:

Answer:External Hard Disk maybe corrupted?

Hard disks can go from unreliable to totally failed without any warning. I had a Seagate 3TB reporting problems one day, and before I could back the files off the drive, it totally failed.

So, once you start getting these failures, you should copy off the files and folders -- while you still can!

Unless you're willing to pay a HUGE sum to have the drive rebuilt by commercial data recovery services (which typically start at $1000 USD), then there is nothing you can do to salvage the drive.
