Hardware, software, syware..... no idea

Question: Hardware, software, syware..... no idea

Here is my issue...
My computer is about 2 years old got it because it was supposed to be awesome for gaming. For the past month now its just been randomly shutting down....or i should say it is randomly shutting off, completely. No warning no shut down procedure just straight to the always scarey blue screen of death. All thats left on is the power button light on the front of the tower, no green power light on the back of the case. Ive taken it up with verizon since i have their security suite and according to them it is not spyware or a virus. At first I thought it was over heating so i cracked the case and gave a little help with a regular household fan on a low setting giving it a bit more air flow, but even with that i figure couldnt be overheating because at times it will shut down minutes after powerup.Could it really just be that it needs a good cleaning physically? Or am I going to have to shell out money for a new power supply? How can I diagnose the power supply of that is the issue? Ive rolled it back to a restore point and so far its run ok for ten minutes. Any ideas? What could be the problem? Hardware, software, spyware? Any help is seriously appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Hardware, software, syware..... no idea

Well, clearly, one of the steps here is to clean out all the dust, expecially in the processor and video card heatsinks. Also, while you're in there, reseat ALL the cables, expansion cards, etc.

Next, I'd give it a memory test, at least a couple of hours on one of these. Any failures are a problem, these should run error-free for as long as you let them run.

the idea is a program that constantly records, and has a button that saves a video of the last minute or so. that way, i can just play around with the software, and when a bug occurs, then i can review what i did. (i often encounter a crash, and forget exactly what i did.)

does any thing like this exist?? if so, can i get a link?

Answer:software tester recording software idea. does it already exist?

screen recorder does it. It records what happened on your computer screen so you can check it out what you did before bugs occured.

Google will help you.

Hello everyone. I'm new here and this will be my first post on here. I'm sorry if I have started this post in a wrong thread. I'm unsure of where it should go. Anyways, I'm not a tech expert so that's why I here. I will try my best to describe my problem tho.

First of all, I have been having this problem since last week. The problem is that it just auto shut down on me without any warning.

I thought it was because its overheating/the cpu reached it limits hence why it auto shut, but thats probably not the case.

And since that happened I just thought to myself that I should just reinstall windows. Haha. I thought that would solve my problem. But it didn't.

This crash problem occured when I opened game. I also realised that it happen as well when I browse the internet using firefox. Like after I opened it for a few minutes it then shut down.

However, if I'm not opening anything else and just at the desktop and only transferring files for hours, the crash never happen unlike after I rebooted, went to firefox, then googling stuff and then poof, it crashed. I also checked the cpu too, but its not overworking itself. Its just chilling.... Oh, and I checked it from task manager.

I already tried uninstalling the nvidia drivers and went to surf the internet afterward. No crashes at all. I could watch youtube as well without having it crash on me. But when I reinstalled the driver back. It happened again.

So... I don't know really wha... Read more

I plan to build a system with an Intel Core 2 E6600 with a NVidia 8800 GTX and was wondering if there is any big problem with running my copy of Windows 2000 Professional I already have. I still use it with my 3Ghz Pentium 4 and it's been perfect for me.

If it's not wise to run Windows 2000 on this new hardware is it better to get Windows 2003 64-bit or Windows XP 64-bit and why? I pretty much use my computer to play games like Half Life 2, Flight Simulator 2004, Doom 3 and to watch movies and look at pr0n.

Boy that pr0n is gonna look great with that 8800GTX. </heavy_heavy_sarcasm>

2K had it's time in the sun, now it's past. Get XP SP2 on there and you'll be fine. As most others will tell you, with any 64 bit OS you're going to encounter issues with gaming and drivers. I personally don't have any issues at all on this Core 2 Duo running at 1.66 GHz and using Intel GMA950 onboard graphics, so that monster you're going to build would absolutely scream with XP or Vista for most intents and purposes.

But sticking with 2K at this stage in the "game" of Windows and computer hardware would be like putting racing stripes and a Recaro seat on a Segway...

For the first time ever, I built a PC in late July. Since the first week of owning it, I have gotten the same BSOD once a month, at least. The BSOD's almost all occurred while gaming as well. I also have experienced 5-10 PC freezes, and I am at a loss. I have run Prime95 and Intel's diagnostic program, and the CPU has passed both fine. I have yet to run Memtest though, mostly because I am a bit fearful of stress testing and don't really know how long to do it for (surprised I even did any with my CPU) and just am worried that pushing it to it's max will shorten its life. I have not stressed tested my GPU, and figured it wasn't the problem as the GPU is at full load a lot of times during most days and these blue screens occur about once a month.

My hard drives seemed to cause a problem because of the frequent freezes. I also cannot put my PC to sleep, because it almost always freezes at the welcome screen when it wakes. I ran SeaTools diagnostics for my hard drive, but it froze my PC instantly. I have two of the same hard drive, but it only freezes at this moment when I have both hooked up. I cloned my main drive to my secondary drive and tried booting with each one hooked up individually. In both cases, I did not freeze when running SeaTools. Both drives also passed its diagnostic tests.

So, here I am, at a huge loss. I have tried several other forums, but people rarely answer and mostly just say to update drivers, which I have already done. I don't know what else I ca... Read more

Hello and welcome Rayz mate the memtest would be a good run

MEMTEST

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.htmlthis one you will need to make a bootable disk set the BIOSto optical (or USB if preferred) boot the machine and let it run for at LEAST 8passes unless the errors come up straight away. Takes fair time to complete andsome leave it running overnight.

But first run these and delete any rubbish you find with the malware scans the ADW just run the Clean button when done.

When I am trying to set up my computer to get TV from my set top box the computer identifies my signal and shows a small picture of the live TV.  When I click on next I get a message - IR Hardware not detected.  Can someone please tell me to what this refers?  My wireless remote works and the set top box has an IR cable that is only a few feet away.  My TV remote picks it up easily.  Is there more hardware that needs to be bought for the TV to work with this computer? Thanks, David

I've been kickin around the idea of making a website and I want to host it at my house. I don't expect many hits realistically, I can't see their being more than 10-30 hits a day at it's peak. I'm not too concerned about bandwidth and upload speed. It's not going to be more than 1-3 pages with mostly text with some pictures, so I won't be hosting any downloads.

Do any of you host websites at your house? What are the major security concerns? I plan on using Ubuntu 9.04 for it. This is the hardware I was thinking of using, I didn't think it needed to be that powerful and I wanted it to use the least amount of energy possible since it'd be 24/7.

I would assume an Atom would be sufficient.

Answer:Hosting a website at your house. Good/Bad idea? Hardware questions as well.

really to host a website it isn't difficult at all, grab a good copy of ubuntu server edition and apache. the only thing that really limits you is bandwidth. Also if you don't plan on getting many hits then hardware is a minimum. The atom processor would do just fine in that case, but if you ever got a lot more traffic then it might become a problem.

I used to host a website from my house on a modded xbox...worked fantastically.

Hi, yesterday I had an issue with my laptop because I couldn?t connect and detect any Wi-fi network, the Bluetooth device was unavailable too, The network icon just showed available a Ethernet connection but I did not had cable so, I couldn't connect to the internet and I was looking a way to "turn on" the network adapter but I couldn't and I gave up.I download a report from the networks config and it showed the status for the Wi-fi & Bluetooth device as: DOES NOT EXIST (Qualcomm Atheros QCA61x4 Wireless Network Adapter and Bluetooth Device) Today I turned on my laptop and the Wi-fi was available again, I checked immediately the Lenovo Solution Center App in the section "Instantanea" to compare the changes in hardware and software vs yesterday and in the section for Network Board there is a change, yesterday there was not a available devices for Wi-fi and Bluetooth and today there are both "like they were added today".I'm worry about having the same issue in the future, my laptop is my work tool and if it fails again like yesterday what could I do?Attached a picture of the Lenovo solution center from today showing the difference vs yesterday.

I think Microsoft should step up in the release cycle of upcoming Lumia phones as it is a tad behind in terms of hardware and software features.
Hardware picks: Fingerprint, hearth rate monitor, 2k screen and stylus.
Software features: More toggle options in action centre especially data connection toggle, an health app by swiping to the right from the home screen, app sorting in menu and multitasking window.

Answer:What should the upcoming Lumia phone look like in features both hardware in hardware and software?

If there are more entries showing, I would investigate for infection, but this is generally normal.

Perhaps I haven't quite grasped what you want but couldn't you do most of it by using a camcorder pointed at your screen and then talking into the microphone? You can afterwards edit it using standard video editing software.

This may be a little on the cheesy side, but I've always wanted a piece of cloning software that can do what I'm about to describe. Maybe that software has been made for a long time now, and I'm just totally ignorant to that... so I'm willing to be ridiculed for what I am about to describe.

First I start out with the PC, I make a fresh install of the OS, then install and configure all the software that's going to be used on all the PC's that I plan on replicating the data to.

Second, find some sort of software that can make a bit-by-bit copy of the hard drive, and giving the option to burn to a CD all within a bootable CD, without having to incorporate itself into the current OS that I plan on cloning.

This program could be bootable from CD, and no matter what OS is on the hard drive, it just breaks everything on the hard drive down to the very bit, producing an image of all the bits that are in use from each sector of the hard drive (which would allow it to be cloned to different hard drives, so long as they are large enough to handle the image).

On boot, this bootable CD cloning application would load into memory, and also load the drivers/ software for the CD or DVD that is to burn the image that will be created later. Before an image is created of the hard drive, a virtual drive will be created in unused sectors of the hard drive. The software will know not to to copy the bits within those sectors, as that is where the image will be stor... Read more

Have you ever looked at Acronis True Image or Norton GHOST? Multiple machine deployments are a very common use for software like this. You also probably want to take a look at Microsoft's SYSPREP for preparing the image for multiple machine deployment.

I'll keep this as short as possible... Recently bought a Pc from a recycling centre that cleans up old office Pc's for home use, this came installed with windows 98 (not Xp etc) I tried downloading an anti-spyware program and this has picked up a virus of some sort so now I have an illegal operation box come up when booting up my machine everytime. I can close this and still get onto the Net but then I get pop-ups, one especially on Ebay, a Web Site Directory pop-up that freezes the screen. I have tried downloading various 'Spyware', 'Firewall' bits etc (I don't even know what they do) but this is not working. Is it possible to re-install Windows 98 easily as I have no disc or can I 'clean' up my computer myself? Any basic information would be MUCH appreciated!

Question: syware

Howdy,

I have a couple of questions that I was hoping you could help me out with.

A couple of months ago my computer was invaded by some sort of virus or worm. It wiped everything on my computer out. I had to re-install all my software. I have switched from dial-up to high speed with a modem.

I have the following protection set up.

Norton Anti Virus
Spybot
Ad Aware
Microsoft Anti Spyware

I am so nervous about another monster getting into my computer, that I run these programs twice daily.

Questions:

Is there any other type of protection I should have ?

I leave my computer running 24/7. Is that a bad idea ?

Thankyou for your time and help!

Dennis

Answer:syware

Hi Dennis H and welcome to BCYou seem like you are set up fairly good. I would add a router to your computer and a trojan program like a-squared. A router is considered to be a hardware firewall and is more effective than a software one. However, the use of a software firewall at the same time will alert you to outgoing traffic that you may want to be aware of. SpywareBlaster adds another level of protection too.I leave my computer on 24/7 and its not a problem for me.You might want to download HiJack This and LSPfix also. Some malware that gets into your computer can prevent you from contacting the sites where you get these programs and then its too late.

Hi,

Can someone please advise what software would be good to use to do the following (I would like to avoid PhotoShop for this - Explanation below):
Re-Size Image
Increase/Decrease Lighting
Cut Parts of Images

The reason i ask is some people in our company are after 3 PhotoShop licenses to do the above but the cost seems a little excessive for what i believe to be small changes to an image. Fair enough if they are designing all day but they just want to edit a few images.

Something free or of a lower cost than PhotoShop.
Any ideas?

I've done my research, and found out that the culprit appears to be the "System" service (description "NT Kernel & System"), which causes the port 9000 to be in constant "Listening" mode.

Hi and welcome to TSG,

Download this: http://downloads.subratam.org/FINDnFIX.exe
Extract it (it should autoextract to C:\FindnFix when you double click it)

Go to the C:\FindnFix folder and doubleclick on !LOG!.BAT and let it run. It will generate a log.txt file. Copy and paste the log.txt back here in your next reply.

Anyone else with a similar problem, do NOT attempt to follow these instructions on your own. Expert help is required to interpret the log and deleting the wrong file can cause serious damage to your system!

After trying for weeks, I haven't been able to burn a VCD or SVCD with any freeware programs. I tried the free demo of Nero and liked it a lot, but $100 is steep. I don't have a DVD burner, thus I have no need of most of the new features. I'm thinking about buying some older models of Nero through Amazon or eBay...is this a good idea? Does anyone see any potential problems with this? I can get the programs I need at a more reasonable price, but I'm afraid that I might be in trouble if something doesn't work.

Answer:Buying old Nero Software -- Good Idea?

Before you buy something older, make sure your burner is supported.
My favorite burning program (because for me it just always works), is Adaptec v4. (This is before Roxio bought out Adaptec. I wanted to put it on another computer but the burner wasn't supported. I bought Roxio v6 and I'm very unhappy with it. I burn data CDs then discover that even if I close the session and let the CD open, I can't add files to it. I finally just removed it. I must be too stupid to figure out how it works. I don't burn any data CDs on that computer.

I know, I know, most of you probably regard the Idea Central software as just another marketing tool that should be removed but I actually like it for the quick video content page, news items, etc.So I'm thinking of rebuilding my S10-3 to get a cleaner software load without some of the other Lenovo sw junk but I actually would like to have the Idea Central software. Any idea where I can get it. It isn't posted as a download on the Lenovo site.Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

As I understand Reimage, it checks for problem/corrupt files and replaces them with fresh files such as executable or dll files.

But, I am thinking that Reimage sounds like a good idea.  Is it?

It also is supposed to remind you to update drivers.  I always keep my drivers updated and never allow a program to tell me to update.

Answer:Reimage type of software, good or bad idea?

My opinion: BAD idea.

This software does nothing you can't do yourself - for free. They want $70.00. Heck, give me your address, I'll come over and help you out for half that. (Just kidding.)

Don't install this kind of junk on your computer. Save your money.

Okay, I've got a computer that's had heavy use for about the last 5 years, hadn't been defraged for 3, has had MANY installs and uninstalls, and has a registry with more enteries than grains of sand on the beach.

I've heard that cleaning the registry should help speed things up. So I found this software: Eusing Free Registry Cleaner............

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil...scription.html

Does this sound like a good idea, or would you recommend something else, or maybe differant software? Would love your opinions!

Answer:Registry cleaning software - good idea?

I believe that registry cleaning is something very godd especially in your case that you have neglected cleaning your pc. Registry cleaning cleans up invalid entries that may confuse the system to no-more existing locations. Thus it reduces the size of the registry and makes it respond better. I use Tune Up Utilities 2008 / Registry Clean and I would recommend it if you 'd like to spend some money on it, otherwise the one that Pc world suggest seems generally good with a glance at it but I haven't tried it yet. If you would like a free one it seems the best option.

Hello all, this is my first time using this site and posting a thread. I am having troubles with what I believe to be a mixture of spyware and viruses on my computer. The main problem I have is that my homepage is set to google but instead of pulling up google it pulls up a page stating my computer is infected with spyware and to buy various removal tools. This makes it impossible for me to pull up google. Also, if I used yahoo or other search engines, once I try to click on the link to the page I want to go to, the virus pulls up a different unrelated page. Also getting ads showing up in website pages that normally do not have adds. I have fun CC Cleaner, Windows Malicous Software Removal Tool, AD Aware SE Personal, Spybot Search and Destroy, Microsoft Windows Defender, CW Shredder, Bitdefender, Panda Active Scan, and Hijack This but I still am having the problem. I have attached my log files from PandaActive Scan, Bitdefender, and Hijack This below. Any advice on how to resolved this would be most appreciated. Thank you to all that reply!

Mark.

Answer:Syware/Virus problems

HijackThis is install incorrectly. Move HijackThis to C:\Program FIles\HJT. Do this before you do anything else.

The installed version of Java on you computer is out dated. Install the latest version, which is 1.5.0_06, uninstall the old version.

Follow the directions for SpywareQuake & SpyFalcon Removal Procedure.

Post the smitfiles.txt and a fresh HijackThis log.

Answer:spysweeper and microsoft syware

depending on how good your computer is I dont see anything wrong with that I have mutiple programs running like that, it just makes sure your even more protected! if some spyware gets through one of them the other will stop it! So as long as your computer isnt running really slowly or anything there is nothing wrong with it!

Answer:Hjt Log For What I Believe Might Be The Syware Sheriff Worm

Hello,This is a real nasty log, and actually it doesn't suprise me at all because your windows is unpatched. Your system is extremely vulnerable without the necessary pathes. I see in your log that it was made in safe mode - because I am pretty sure you are not able to boot into normal mode with the amount of malware present.First of all, you didn't unzip/extract hijackthis.. and it's still in the tempfolder. So I strongly advise to unzip/extract hijackthis.zip.Read here how to unzip/extract properly:http://metallica.geekstogo.com/xpcompressedexplanation.htmlCreate a permanent folder and move hijackthis.exe into it. The reason is because hijackthis creates backups and when it's in your temp-folder it can be accidentally deleted. How do you make a permanent folder:Click My Computer, then C:\ and then on Program Files. In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".Now you have C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Put your HijackThis.exe there. It's better to print out the next instructions or save it in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then.It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exeDon't use it yet, we'll use it afterwards in safe mode.* Start Hijac... I have been having some problems with my computer, and I think I might have some sort of Malware or Sypware. I have Norton Antivirus and I'm pretty smart when It comes to keeping up with computer maintenance. I have anti virus on my PC (Norton). I also have a Fix It Utilities also (which doesn't do much). Is there any other programs or protection I should purchase. Here are the problems I have noticed.- A Little yellow warning triangle on the desktop tray. ( I have tried to ask for help but can't get any)- Firewall keeps turning off on it's own, and will not stay on- Internet connection disconnects all the time, I have had no other problems with my other internet connected devices (i.e. Xbox 360, PS3, etc)- Windows Explorer crashes a lot (Typically when I go open files or when I open my little USB thumb drive)I have a second question too...My Norton subscription is about to run out at the end of month, is there a better alternative or should I sick with that? And one more quick tech question should I ditch my old Wireless G router and adapter and go for Wireless N?

Answer:Syware/Malware Problem?

My advice first is to dump Norton like a hot potato, it's not a good AV. Use the uninstaller from the norton sitehttp://us.norton.com/support/kb/web... to fully remove it or no other AV will work. Then my preference (been using it for 9 yrs now) is Avast Free. http://filehippo.com/download_avast...It will suit your purpose fine. After installing it, get Avast to do a bootscan and you will see all that norton was missing...move what it finds to the chest. To clean your PC1- Ccleaner slimhttp://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/bu...2- malwarebyteshttp://filehippo.com/download_malwa...3- trojan removerhttp://www.simplysup.com/tremover/d...4- Hitman prohttp://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanproRun all those till they run clean. Some HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers

Hi,I have the habit of downloading different softwares from freeware sites and testing it.  I happened to instal Faronics Deep Freeze.  Check the details of that software if u have not tested it from http://www.faronics.com/html/deepfreeze.asp.  This program no matter what changes are made, it will reset the computer to its original state when restarted.  I installed this software without knowing this into my personal computer.  Now I wanted to uninstall some other softwares, delete some files.  I am able to do these uninstallations & deletions, but when restarted the same softwares n files gets restored.  There is no option given for uninstalling this Faronics Deep Freeze software.  That software does not show up in ControlPanel -> Add or remove programs too...I tried deleting it from program files, but again this software restores again when restarted  . Now I'm not able to delete any files or uninstal any softwares from my personal system.. Is there any other way to get rid of it...How do i uninstal this Faronics Deep Freeze software.  Could you pls someone over here given a solution on on this?......Thanks,Regards,Victor

Answer:How to get rid of Faronics Deep Freeze software??? Any idea??? Getting fedup

From http://www.faronics.com/faq/#1:1. Deep Freeze is installed on my machine. I would like to uninstall it. How is this done? To uninstall the software Deep Freeze must first be disabled and then uninstalled. To disable Deep Freeze:   1. Hold down the shift key and double-click on the Deep Freeze icon. Alternatively, you can press Crtl-Alt-Shift-F6. You should now see a password dialog.   2. Enter your password and click OK. If you have not yet entered a password you should be able to click OK without entering anything. You should now see a dialog with boot options.   3. Select "Boot thawed" and click OK. This will disable Deep Freeze on the next reboot.   4. Reboot your machine. After the machine reboots you are ready to uninstall Deep Freeze. To uninstall:   1. Locate the installation file you used to install Deep Freeze to this machine. By default the name of this file is called "DF5Std.exe" for versions 5.X and "DF6Std.exe" for versions 6.X.   2. Run the installation file (DF5Std.exe or DF6Std.exe).   3. Select the option to "Uninstall"   4. The software should uninstall and reboot the machine. When the machine reboots, Deep Freeze should be uninstalled.

This computer is a very old Compaq notebook and it runs great. However, I have received several emails with RE in the subject line. Is this an indication that I might have spyware on this computer?
In february, someone here at TSG Forums gave me a link to a site that perfomed a free virus check. They included a link to a spyware removal tool. My computer got a clean bill of health. I would like to run a new check. However I can't find the email that had the help. Thanks for all of your help!

I am starting a company where I create a video and play it in Limos and shuttle buses. I need to install tv's soon and was wondering if any one had any ideas on how I could easily and cheap network all my tv's together so I could upload content from the internet instead of doing it manually.

There are a lot of options, from digital frames that play video to an iphone, to different types of servers , does any one have any good ideas on what would be the easiest.

Hi,

I got hit with spysheriff last night. I followed the advise I found on several of the threads I read but the instructions did not fix the desktop background features. The only thing I can do is change colors, all the other features are locked.

Below are two file logs. The first I ran last night before I performed spyware cleanup functions and the other I just completed.

Please does anyone reading this post know of any open source or freeware software that can be downloaded and burnt to a cdr or dvd so as to create a bootable disc and capable of checking system hardware and software at startup? I have a Lenovo Thinkpad R61 running Windows 7 which has developed a problem whereby immediately after the initial Windows 7 welcome screen it throws up a blue screen of death message, resulting in continual restart. I need to determine whether the fault lies with the operating system, in which case I'll re-install this from the original W7 disc, but if the problem lies with ram etc. then I'll need to sort this out first. I have used the systems own hard disk checker from bios, which runs and says that the disc is okay. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

I'm researching possible inventory options for my network. Auto software inventory is the requirement, but good hardware inventory is a huge plus.

I've used spiceworks, but I've had issues with it finding the same system multiple times ( and thus, adding to the number of "installed locations" ) that have never been adequately resolved. I'd love to hear personal experiences with different software packages.

I've got a laptop that needs OS updating. It has pointsec on it. My impression is that pointsec is both hard and software level encryption so it would have to be unencrypted before itsOS can be updated. Others are telling me it's just software level, I can format and proceed. Anyone have personal experience with this?

Answer:Pointsec: Hardware + Software or Just Software

I've used pointsec, if you don't need any data off the hard drive you can wipe and reinstall the OS.

hi abeltran,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Just to verify, do you have these AC adapter specs:

IdeaPad U310 Touch AC Adapter
Ideapad U460 AC Adapter

If both adapter have DC19V, 3.42A then you should be okay.

Dropbox + Sugarsync - running both at the same time - good idea or bad idea?
Will they both be thrashing my machine and eating up lots of CPU like a hungry monster?

Thanks
OM

Answer:Running Sugarsync + Dropbox at the same time - good idea or bad idea?

You can be specific about what each actually synchronizes so I don't see that as a CPU issue. However if using both over the Internet with one of the more substantial data plans to sync, I would wonder which gets priority or how well they share the upload bandwidth. Wouldn't be so good if one was always grabbing it to sync in the off-load times and the other just kept waiting and waiting for its turn.

So like many I have a simple router at home, Asus N56U with padavan flashed firmware.

2011-2015 Padavan & N56U project community

However I was able to score a Dell Optiplex 390 that originally had an i3 in it but also got an i5 2400 @ 3.1Ghz cpu to put in it and i have wanted more control over my network (i am in IT, Sr. Systems Analyst) so as we know, we always want more control....

I am going to use this system as a firewall to replace my Asus (use the Asus as an AP) but wanted to know what to use these days.. (yes i know total overkill, I had thought about virtualizing it if i had a larger HD for it but dont right now)

I had pfsense on it, 2.6 and it seems every 2 hours or so it would randomly reboot, however i tested the memory and all and it is all fine..(currently doing intel burn test on the cpu)

Total system specs:
Dell Optiplex 390 SFF
i5 2400
4G DDR3
250G SATA HD
Intel Pro/1000 PT quad port nic
I have often used CentOS for web-server and proxies and thought perhaps use it and firewalld and such to make a router, but wanted to see what other options there may be or that people have used, i know FreeBSD may be a good option as it is the base of many routers anyways..

Options? Thoughts?

Answer:I got the hardware, now to add the software..

FreeBSD is a solid choice in general however I do think that it's quite a waste to replace your MIPS box as it'll do just fine. If you want more control just flash OpenWRT on it even though Broadcom isn't the ideal platform (no WiFi most likely).

Anyhow, you can give FreeBSD a go. I'd personally go for -CURRENT but you'll also be fine with the latest release. Make sure you have the latest BIOS installed and that you're AHCI and not compatible mode. The handbook gives you a good start on how to setup a firewall using ipfw or pf (I'd personally recommend pf).

Question: hardware/software

My Dell thinkpad 261t, has a black screen,"thinkpad comes up briefly en it after it is started and then it dissappears..How help me, please. Thanks, KS

Answer:hardware/software

Does it stay on until the Windows loading screen? If so, it could be a video driver issue. Try booting into Safe Mode and uninstalling the video drivers, reboot, and update the video drivers.

If it doesn't stay on that long, the video chipset or screen is faulty.

Go to the site of the manufacturer of your hardware and download the drivers for you scanner and printer.  You can save them to your hard drive and install them from there.

This is probably a very basic question, but I don't know the answer to it. Is there a program or some other means of finding out what is going on in my computer from the time I turn it on until the icons show up on my screen? Seems like this amount of time gets longer and longer. Currently it takes over 2 minutes to get to my icons.

Answer:Hardware or Software ? Not Sure

WinPatrol will identify auto loading programs and may help. Decrappifier is another utility that may be of use. Also make sure your case is clean and your CPUs heatsink is clear from dust.

I've seen many members have problem ID'ing their hardware.
About a month ago someone link to a nice beta program that gave a nice rundown of all the hardware on ones computer.
I'm trying to remember or find the link but just don't remember the name or subject.

It was a free program like Everest but not that much detail and was Beta.

Ok I really need help with this,

I have at least 3 programs that aren't working properly, I don't know if it is a software or
hardware problem, two of the programs are 3d apps ( poser and carrara ) and the other
is macromedia fireworks, this problem happens when opening a file I previously saved.

In Poser I'll get a few vertices shooting out from the geometry, In carrera I get a generic
I/O error and the file doesn't load, In fireworks I get an " unsupported format " error loading a native .PNG file,

as for hardware I recently upgraded my computer about two weeks before this
started happening I'll list those changes shortly, as for software, at first I thought virus,
but I've run 3 different virus programs ( AVG, Norton, Panda ) and my system is clean,
I haven't made any big software changes lately, so I'm leaning towards hardware
being the culprit though I'm really not sure,

For software I have windows XP MCE all current updates, All my drivers are updated

on the hardware end I upgraded from a ECS L7VM3 motherboard with a athlonXP
1800+ processor 1.5 Gig DDR kingston ram and a 350w PSU to a ASUS P5VDC-MX with a pentium D 805 processor 2 gig DDR2 kingston ram and a 460w PSU.

I also have a AGP Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 GPU, a soundblaster audigy 2 Soundcard, and a
tv tunner card, installed

I have a few things I've been told it might be, but researching them just confused me more

Forgive me for not knowing the computer model number or anything, but I can tell you this is an HP about two years old.

So I'm doing my boyfriend's taxes last week on his computer, and in the middle of it, we get the BSOD with this message:

IRQL not less or equal

So we restarted, and it was fine. Next day I'm on it, and it does it again. I Google on my BlackBerry and it says it's a memory problem, so I run a diagnostic test on it, sure enough there are memory issues that seem like it's a hardware issue. We backed up some stuff that night (and got the BSOD once again!) and took it to Best Buy (I know, I know) because he has an extended warranty.

Well now they are claiming it's a software issue with the registry and they can't fix it unless they charge him, and they want to wipe the whole thing and start over. I think this is a bunch of BS frankly.

My theory is that we take the computer home, get into safe mode and back everything up this time, uninstall some programs (I might add, I hadn't installed anything new for weeks and I had to install a few things a while back to get rid of a trojan on it--his son downloaded Frostwire--need I say more?), do a system restore, and see what happens.

Of course he's all pissy since they didn't call him (I was there getting a new laptop because mine was a lemon and I asked if his was done) and he seems to think that somehow this is my fault (I can tell by his voice) and that he should just pay they money he doesn't have for them to... Read more

Answer:Software, or hardware?

Why don't you just replace the memory Dimm that the diagnostic program indicates. If that works out, present the bill to BB and tell them that they made a mistake sending you on a wild goose chase. You can scan your system here to find out what Dimm you need: RAM Memory Upgrade: Dell, Mac, Apple, HP, Compaq. USB drives, flash cards, SSD at Crucial.com

I have not figured out what is going on & it is starting to look like my hardware is going bad. Yet I still think it is a software issue.
The only thing I can add to that thread is that I have a lot of processes shut off because of the consuming of my CPU by whatever process, or handles, or threads are running that I am unable to detect, understand or see.
Can someone please help me diagnopse the hardware onmy machine to eliminate it?

I am thinking I should only have one "volume" on here as I installed this sytem from the boot disk I made when I bought it. Am I misunderstanding something?

Oh yea I have been freezing up a lot lately and it froze after typing all that above when I clicked on submit. I had to force a shutdown and reboot. Here we go fingers crossed.

Hey all,

Not sure of which forum to post this thread under, so I guess I'll start here.

I recently purchased and installed some new hardware. The new hardware is:

eVGA GeForce FX 5900 Ultra 256MB 8xAGP videocard
P4 2.6CGhz 800Mhz bus 512 L2 cache CPU
Soyo Fire Dragon Ultra 2 Platinum motherboard

Other hardware in my system (if you need to know):

1024 MB PC3200 400Mhz GEIL DDR memory
2 120GB Maxtor 8MB buffer IDE hard drives
48x Plextor Plexwriter CDRW
P.O.S. 19" Gateway monitor
350watt Enermax dual fan power supply

Now, here's the issue:

Every time I run 3dmark03 my machine freezes at the EXACT same point during the first CPU test (the planes if you didn't know). Also, rarely, my machine will do the same during a game. I have had this happen on a graphically intensive game and a lower quality game. I have checked my temps and nothing is even close to overheating. I don't have anything overclocked and have studied and attempted several BIOS, System setting, and video setting tweaks to try and resolve this, but to no avail. The fact that this happens at the exact same point in 3dmark negates the overheat possibility, and the fact that it happens on lower quality games negates a problem with the video card. I am both and gamer and an IT professional and I cannot figure this issue out. If anyone has ANY insight at all, please respond! I have tried reformatting and reinstalling XP as well as 3dm... Sounds like the CPU may not be flushing the cache properly.

Hi!

I've been getting a blue screen of death as well...

I just installed a Pentium D 915 on my board as well as a second G of RAM...

Then the problems began...

I first flashed my BIOS to make sure it was compatible with my new PROC.Then, during the windows xp installation, I was getting an SXS.dll error and setup would not complete... after stripping my Rig down... it only worked when I left My kingston ram in as long as my generic 1G stick wasn't installed...

So the rig was working fine at that point... XP installed, I got all my software and hardware drivers to intall and I was in LALA land...

Until...

All of a sudden I keep getting a Blue Screen of Death giving me either or message...
I got this one before I uninstalled my video drivers...

"PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA" win32k.sys

When I uninstalled my video drivers I started getting this one...

"IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"

Another weird thing is that everytime I download x1600 drivers and install them... my card then becomes an x1650...

Could this have anything to do with my problems?

Cheers and thanks in advance...

Mehdi

Hey you guys,

Here is the deal... I reinstalled Windows XP because i upgraded from a 64 mb Video Card to a 128 mb and also i wanted to clean up the mess in my session. When it comes to antivirus i've had some experience with Norton SW 04 and it has been great, i'm always clean of threats. But this time, i wanted something more sophisticated so i installed Norton SW 05. After a few days of try out, the live update application became a problem because of an error in it that was causing my computer to froze down. Then when i'm tryed to uninstall it to continue with the 04, couldn't do it because of the same problem... the computer continued to froze down.
So, i took the easy way and reinstalled Windows again. Now, when i tryed to install Norton 04 the computer.... froze down again. Then i tryed to enter windows and now it reboots when the windows xp screen it's displayed (the screen looks fuzzzy too).

What do you guys think?, i think maybe it's a motherboard or processor problem but the computer was working just great before the first installation of windows. I'll try to take the pieces out of the case and clean them one by one with an electronic spray cleaner, maybe it's a problem related to the oldeness of the pieces ( p4 2.0 proccesor and biostar motherboard, about 4 years old)

Thank you guys for reading this post and for your opinions
if you have not written yet, please do it, i'm desesperated!... jejeje

just kidding,
cee ya guys, will help out in the forum

Answer:Hardware or Software?

if it is the same in safe mode it would indicate h/w
if the power supply is original it may need upgrading

I am going to do a Win 8 Pro 64 bit upgrade to my existing Win 7 Pro 64 bit system.

I am also going to do a system hardware upgrade with new mobo, cpu, psu, and ram.

Question - which should I do first?

Answer:Hardware or Software First?

Hello Ned, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I would recommend doing the hardware updates first, then upgrading to Windows 8 to avoid any activation issues with Windows 8.

I have an ASUS M2A-VM HDMI system that some time ago blew the power supply. I had a second video card (NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT) already installed at the time. Upon replacing the power supply the onboard video was not operating. It hasn't been a problem until now.

I'm trying to install a LCD HDTV as my primary monitor and would like to use the DVI output from the ASUS. I'm not getting any signal from it. When I check with the device manager only the NVIDIA is listed. There is a "ASUS Other Devices" named "Enhanced Display Driver Helper Service" with no drivers installed listed.

I'm not sure now if when the power supply blew (yes, the machine was running at the time) that the onboard video was toasted or wether I've got a software problem.

Any ideas?

The issue with the desktop is that as soon as the Windows XP screen is on for a few few seconds, it power cycles, so, it never gets past that screen. I have tried to run Safe mode, but, it never goes past that, still power cycles. I tried to Run Last Known Good Configuration, but, still the same thing. I did get it to go to the System Restore screen, but, am scared of erasing all of the data on the computer. I think it said that it wouldn't do that, but, I wanted to double check with you.

Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Jeremy

Answer:Not sure if it's hardware or software

Are you referring to the Windows XP System Restore feature? All About System Restore in WinXP - http://bertk.mvps.org/ Compaq systems come with recovery/restore provisions which basically means that they reinstall all software and drivers all over agains. That should not be referred to as System Restore...it's the Compaq way to restore the system back to the way that it was when first acquired.Any such features for repair/restore/recovery...which have been implemented by Compaq...should be covered in the owner's manual or at the Compaq website.Louis

First off, I know just enough about computers to be really dangerious. My fav past time is dickering with them, breaking them, and then spending hair pulling days trying to fix'em...but this time, I dunno if I actually broke it, if it broke itself.

Second off, this is a homebuild, after initial build I have done no modifications to the system specs (no overclocking). For my purposes it has never needed OC'ing, however the GPU is from a previous build that involved lots of playing with OC'ing (a build in which I righteously fried all to hell )

Symptoms Began:

Two weeks ago. The Desktop had been unused for several months, I started it up and updated the drivers for the GPU and ran windows update.

The Very next day the symptoms began.

Symptoms:

1. Either CPU or GPU fan goes into high gear. It is audable. I am assuming it is the GPU because the durned thing has from 1st install sounded like a jet engine taking off. CPU cooler (after market Dual Orb) has always been very quiet.

2. Two to three second later Monitor goes black, reports there is no DVI Output.

3. Computer remains active for 3-4 second after monitor goes out, then does a hard lock.
Events Prior to Symptoms Occuring:

1. 6-7 hours of idle. 3-5 hours of heavy use (typically this is gaming)

Yes -- let someone who knows what their doing build a PC for you! Much less hassle that way and it keeps those little computer shops in work building computers. Support your local PC shop! (I'm not referring to the "PC World" megastores, I mean the little guy who actually builds them, doesn't just shift boxes out the door).

Not sure which is at fault, or should I just chuck and replace them both?

I've had a Adaptec AVC-2410 tuner/capture card for some years and using that have been able to record and burn my personal VHS tapes to DVD as well as (legally) capture TV from satellite programing to also burn recorded TV programing to DVD. The 2410 had InterVideo WinDVR 3.0 bundled with it when I bought it and at some point about a year ago the software evidently became somewhat erratic, sometimes with video without sound, sound without video, or sometimes freezing whereupon the recording also unexpectedly stops. The only way I have been able to minimize (but not eliminate) these problems was to "pre-cycle" (ahead of time) the recording process (from VHS and/or TV tuner programing) several times before starting my actual record/save session. The problem(s) have become worse whereby now even my preparations before beginning a session do not work well enough, so I can never know when hour(s) of preparation and recording are spoiled by software (or hardware) error/stoppage. I'm not certain if the problem lies with the Adaptec 2410 card, the Win DVR3 software, or both, as I have previously downloaded updates and drivers for both. I am advised nothing more is available for either the software or hardware, both being obsolete or outdated and no longer having support. So I need suggestions on how to fix the software, hardware, or replace both with an equivalent or better bundle which ... Read more

Hi there. I'm in need of some advice/insight into what's going on with my new Toshiba L50-B-136. I'm in a bit of a bind and I have no idea what to do.

I bought this brand new a few days ago. After having it for a couple of days, the mousepad froze. Everything else seemed to be running, it was just the mouse that was stuck. I logged out of my account via task manager and when out of my account, the mouse worked, but when I logged back in it froze. I restarted a couple of times and logged back in and the mouse would move for a few seconds before freezing again.

I did a factory reset, and it appeared to be working. Then today (pretty much the same amount of time lapsing since the first time it screwed up) it did it again. This time I did a system restore to an earlier point. It's now working again. I have no idea if this is a hardware issue or software.

as for things downloaded by me on this laptop, I have put on chrome, firefox, ccleaner and utorrent. As well as uploading my music from a usb.

If anyone has any idea what's going on, I would be extremely grateful for any help.

operating system is Windows 8.1

Answer:Hardware or Software?

it is brand new, contact toshiba support since it is under warranty. You want all problems on record there just in case.

a couple of things to consider. since it is a brand new computer it will take a few days for it to auto update the operating system. Also it will also take a few days for search to finish indexing the drive. Both can case the problem you are having.

Have a Dell laptop Inspiron 2600 with Celeron (don't hate me) chip. Enough RAM... IE 6, all XP security fixes except SP2. defrag on a daily basis, updated drivers, BIOS, etc.... AVG antivirus, Sygate firewall. Ran a TrendMicro scan and came up clean. Replaced memory and video card.

I have a small problem in that my computer freezes sometimes at start up at the Dell logo with vertical lines. Sometimes, the screen goes dark with white vertical lines. Sometimes, the screen goes dark but programs are still running. Sometimes the screen freezes and a red checkerboard patterns appears. Sometimes, after a critical shutdown, the computer beeps (Phoenix beeping alert) warning me that my memory module is messed up (it ain't). If it gets to that point it won't work for a few days. Strange in that it would need time to get itself back in the mode to work properly. Would a failing screen/monitor create these kinds of problems? When the computer starts up properly and stays 'live' for at least 15 minutes (no crashes, black screens, shutdowns, total freakouts), it's good until I shut it down.

I am currently using this computer. It could work for years to come without any problems or it could shut down on me at any moment.

I just want to know if its hardware or software. I have to think it's hardware as I've reformatted the hard drive numerous times with no change. I've deleted factory installed programs to make sure that all I had running was a barebone system yet... Read more

Answer:Software or hardware?

Its probably hardware, since you have reformatted, unless its a program you are installing after you reformat or a faulty installation.

ok my friends mom brought me two old computersone with win me is labeled shawn and the one with old xp home is emilyill describe whats up with both of them and you guys can chose which one to work on firsti cant really give great detail about them cuz they dont work right..they both were sitting forever and they both were cover in dust it took me a little while to clean them both out and i think i sacraficed parts of both my lungs and i looked like a miner when i went to classshawn(winme) might have a mix of both hardware and software problems. first once i cleaned it and got it running a box poped up and said updating hardware databasebut it stopped at 66% and wouldnt move. after that i busted out the restore cds and restored it and it looked like it was going to work but the magic windows error came up and said files were missing, so when i get home im going to reformat the bugger and see what that does.ok now for emily(xp home) ok hers just wont show video when i hooked up my monitor and turned her computer on the monitor just continued to do the self check thing, it has an onboard video card so yea and i dont know what kind of slots its has cuz i have a vid card i could put in it to check. there is no rush on this emily's mom told me to get it done when i want but i love a challengethanks for the helpunlovedwarrior

Answer:software guy needs help with hardware

A reformat for the ME machine seems best.As for the XP one, does it show video with another monitor?Try your video card if not, you won't be able to insert the wrong video card so that's safe.Make sure the PSU has enough juice to handle it first.Does the PC run and not show video, or just not start?

I have an acer desktop L100. Recently I have noticed the power LED has started blinking. After an hour or so the PC locks up completely, and i have to manually turn the computer off. I gave it to a local PC techie and he advised the PCwas overclocked, so he reduced the CPU temperature and cleaned the computer and declared it was fixed! But sure enough two days later the PC started doing it again and the power LED button is still blinking. The main opinion online is some hardware is dying. Any ideas anyone? Processor AMD Athlon 64 X2 2 GHz Chipset NVIDIA nForce 430 Operating System Microsoft Windows 7HDD Size 160 GB Optical Drive Type DVD-ROM ? DVD Burner ? CD-ROM ? CD Burner Processor Type AMD Athlon 64 X2 Processor Speed 2 GHz Processor Manufacturer AMD Motherboard Bus Speed 2000 MHzRAM Technology DDR SDRAM Installed RAM 2 GB Number of Memory Slots 2 x DIMMs Supported RAM Speeds 533 MHz ? 667 MHz Installed Cache Memory 1 MB Hard Drive Capacity 160 GB Hard Drive Interface Serial ATA II Graphic Processor NVIDIA GeForce 6150

Answer:Hardware or Software?

if it was cleaned properly this should have eliminated an overheating problem unless the techie did not clean it or check that oine of the fans was not operating at the correct speed. The next simplest thing to do is to change the power supply as this is a quick relatively inexpensive operation. You could easily do this yourself. Note the rating of the psu and as long as the one you get is equal or has a larger rating that will do the job. Next follow each cable from the psu to the motherboard and note the number of connections. Also note the power connectors to the optical and hard drives. These could be either the older white 4 pin almost rectangular plug with slightly rounded corners on 1 long side or the newer sata connections which are very much smaller with a thin slot with a right angled tiny slot at the end.

I am running Windows 7 Home Edition, an old celeron processor, about 3.06 ghz I believe and all updates are current. A month or so ago I started having issues when shutting down and restarting the computer. When I restart I have noticed that the Start Menu is open, stays open for a while, then disappears. I don't think this has always been the case. The biggest problem is that when I try to click on an icon on the desktop, like My Computer for instance, about 5 or more of the folder or icon will open up. The mouse does not function properly as well. For instance if you just happen to drag the mouse over an icon or folder, it tries to open up the folder many times. The only thing I have found that fixes this proble is to type something into the search box on the start menu and let it search for it...it can be chkdsk, or you can type in jibberesh such as kkkkkkkkk and it will fix the problem of the multiple page/folders opening up when u click on them. It's like the search function needs to "do something" before things return to normal.  I've also notice that there is a problem most of the time when trying to schedule chkdsk. Most of the time upon restarting the computer I get a message that chkdsk has been scheduler, and then below that it says it's been cancelled and it will not run. I think I've managed to get it to run once like that, and have no idea why it worked that time. Not sure if the two problems are connected or not. It'... Read more
