Accidentally deleted trackpoint driver...

Question: Accidentally deleted trackpoint driver...

I am on a restoration project on an ancient Toshiba 4020CDT - with Win XP Pro. Noticing that there was too much junk software installed on it, I decided to do housecleaning. In the process - there was a Logitech mouse driver (I think 8.7 but do not remember exactly). Not planning to use Logitech mouse (and planning to just get by with the track point the laptop comes with), I uninstalled it.

In the uninstallation process, the system prompted me to reboot. And, since that time - neither the track point nor the external mouse that I tried works. In fact, I can not even login as I can not get the cursor to the user ID.

Is this laptop toast? Or, is it something I can resolve? Not the end of the world as this laptop belongs in the museum (or electronic junk yard) but I do feel bad and would like to some advice.

Thank you very much!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey guys, so i was watching a video on my laptop when I had to suddenly leave. I closed my computer by simply shutting the screen and when I re-openned it, I was getting message saying that I have "No speakers or headphones plugged  in". I have had this issue before and found that I it just required going into the Sound Drivers and updating and reinstalling a the drivers. I would then restart the computer and they would be redownloaded and the sounds was back. When I tried it last time, I accidentally deleted the main driver to the internal speakers and any headphones. I tried going to the Intel website to redownload straight from them, but that didn't help either. Is there anything I can do to reinstall or replace this driver so I can llisten to music from my computers. Currently the only sound driver I have is Conexant ISST Audio, I deleted an Intel sound driver. Thanks for the help.

You might be wondering how that's possible. I was actually trying to free up some space, and I mistakenly hit the wrong box, and before I realized it, it was too late.

All I remembered was that it said it was a Realtek driver. So I went to Realtek's site, and there were two audio drivers there. I downloaded both install files, and neither of them work. Here are the error details I get:

For Realtek HD Audio:
Error Code: -5004 : 0x80070005
Error Information:
>SetupDLL\SetupDLL.cpp (3093)
pAPP:Realtek High Definition Audio Driver
PVENDOR:Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
@Windows XP Service Pack 1 (2600) IE 6.0.2800.1106

For Realtek AC97 Audio:
Error Code: -5004 : 0x80070005
Error Information:
>SetupDLL\SetupDLL.cpp (3093)
pAPP:Realtek AC'97 Audio
PVENDOR:Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
@Windows XP Service Pack 1 (2600) IE 6.0.2800.1106

Looking at them now, they're the exact same error message.

So what do I do to get my sound working again? System Restore doesn't work, either, by the way. Every first time I try to open it, nothing happens, and every second time, it brings up what looks like a blank text file with a grayed-out scroll bar.

Answer:So, I accidentally deleted my sound driver.

Hi there...

the downloaded installer for the drivers usually comes in an extractable installer or archive. Try right clicking on it to see if you can extract the files to their own folder. Then go to your Device Manager (start -> run -> devmgmt.msc -> ok) then right click on your sound card listing and select to update the driver then choose to install from a specified location then browse to the location where the driver files are extracted and see if it's possible to update the drivers that way.

Hope that helps :)

When I tried to use the Scanner Action, this pop up occur:

I tried installing the software back, downloaded from HP website (I don't have the CD) and still it wasn't fixed.

Plus, I can't even use the scan button on the printer. It only blink a few times on the Power Button and nothing happened.

Really need help on this, Thanks!!!

Answer:WIA Driver missing or accidentally deleted

Did you download the driver?
select your version of Windows.

If that doesn't work, have you tried restoring the computer to a date before the printer was installed?

I was doing some cleaning on my Acer Aspire 4730z laptop with Vista last night. I was going to delete a DVD burning software but deleted the Video driver. Now my desktop looks like crap. For some reason, I can't seem to be able to update he drivers. I tried doing a restore but it didn't work.

When I go into Device Mgr, there are "Yellow Exclamation" marks next to Standard VGA Graphics Adapter and Video Controller. I then "Reinstall Drivers" and it asks me to either "Search Automatically for updated driver Software" or Browse My computer for driver software".

Both option results in "Windows was unable to install your video controller". One even ask me to put in my controller disc, which I do not have.

Can anyone help me out with this? THank you.

Answer:Yikes.....accidentally deleted a driver!!!

Hi -

Try Windows System Restore - choose a restore point prior to the deletion of the video driver -

I accidentally deleted the audio driver. Now I have an "x" over the speaker icon and cannot play anything with sound (for example, music videos).

Answer:Accidentally deleted audio driver.

Open your Control Panel and go to Device Manager. You might see an unknown device or one that's currently not working there. If yes, that's probably the missing audio device. You can rightclick it and allow Windows to search for a driver to re-install it.

If you don't see a problem device, expand the Sound, Video and Game Controllers tree. Is there a problem device listed there?

If you can't find it, try Scan for Hardware Changes from the Action menu. Please report back with whether you're successful.

Hello Ajgo, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You could go to the Toshiba drivers & software webpage below on another computer, enter the full model number of your Satellite C855-xxxxxx and click on Go to be able to download the Atheros driver. Afterwards, just copy the driver installation file to the Satellite and install it.

So after using many downloads and tutorials from MajorGeeks etc to try to rid malware/virus from my boyfriend's laptop, I burnt a windows install CD, saved all photos, files, etc to a thumb drive, and wiped everything out. My mistake, I also deleted the HD partition with all the drivers. The new windows install CD I burnt didn't have them. All I want is to find a driver to allow me to connect to the internet, whether by ethernet cable or wifi, I don't care either way. I'm fairly confident from there I can figure the rest out. I tried getting drivers from an HP website (exactly which one, I don't recall at the moment, it was last week, and it took me a pretty long time to find the site) but after downloading different ones, I couldn't get any to successfully install. I hate asking for help, but I am as a last resort... he keeps trying to tell me he'll take it somewhere, which I hate the thought of, because he's not used to mac and doesn't like using my computer anymore. His computer is:

Intel Core i3 M370 @2.40
Chip type: Intel Ironlake Mobile (relevant?)
Windows 7 home ed, 64 bit

Please and thank you for any help/guidance you can give me!!!

Hello! My memory was almost full on my Lenovo All-In-One and in the process of getting rid of programs I didn't need, I accidentally deleted one of the Qualcomm Atheros network drivers.

So my computer will not connect through the internet by wireess router as it did before- however, I am connected to the Internet through my Iphone and a USB cord.

There is one Atheros Driver remaining on my computer. I have tried everything I can think of- I've downloaded the Lenovo Service Bridge but the diagnostic program won't run, and I have attempted to download the "latest Atheros driver. Still, the router won't show up to be able to select it.

Any help you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:Accidentally deleted Soundmax Audio Driver!

Not knowing what your PC is..... Restart it and as it starts back up press F8 several times (usually it is this key) until you get to the screen that asks you how you want to start. Then use your arrow keys to select safe mode and hit enter.

Restoring may not solve your problem though. You may need to install your audio driver and maybe your chipset drivers as well.

I accidentally deleted my IDT sound driver for my HP Pavilion G7 laptop. I was going through the programs that I wanted to uninstall and came across the sound driver. Not knowing that it was an important part of my computer, I deleted it. I've tried downloading it again from the internet, but the file isn't working either. My computer is on Windows 8.1 if that helps.

Answer:Accidentally deleted my IDT sound driver and can't find it

If you just deleted the driver, then reinstalling would work. Apparently more than the driver was deleted.

Rebooting, if no vendor driver was found, Windows will install the generic, basic function, HD Audio Codec.

If that is not installing there are more problems than just the sound, and whatever you uninstalled/deleted must have caused it. if you have a System Restore point that is BEFORE whatever you did, that MAY get you back working. Otherwise, with the OS compromised to the point no sound driver will install it may take a complete reinstall.

Yes, it happens.
All that was needed here was a little info, like your PC brand and model #, or your motherboard ID, all of which is easy to obtain with Everest.
Sound drivers, for the most part, are easy to install.
And once you have the knowledge to restore a driver, you will be a liitle more less un-tech.:cool

I was playing a 3D shooter video game, when I noticed my mouse was behaving in an odd way like never before. If I moved it fast enough, suddenly the first person camera of my character (the cursor) would stop moving, and instead my system would fire a single mousewheel scrolldown. I don't know if it was the game being glitchy, but after noticing this behaviour I tried to clean the bottom of my mouse and press the mousewheel several times, it didn't fix anything. Instead it did the exact opposite of it; my mouse completely stopped moving on the screen. The lights indicating that the mouse is plugged in were still on, and if I moved the mouse the lights would become stronger indicating movement, but the pointer didn't move on the screen. I plugged it in and out several times, but to no avail. I had no idea what happened but I was sure it's not the problem with the mouse since it was working (the lights). (I had another mouse to try if it works but at this point I didn't. I'll mention that mouse later.). Eventually I went into the Device Manager, and under "Mice and other pointing devices" I right-clicked on "Standard PS/2 Mouse", then Properties, then under the Driver tab I clicked Uninstall for the reason I've read that my system would reinstall it after I reboot it. It didn't. And now I have no hope what to do, I have tried to somehow reinstall all drivers, I tried an other mouse too, didn't work, I tried to get back the driver in all the ways possible but... Welcome to our forum InteLStaT.

Try these.

1. Reboot with the PS2 mouse plugged in and see if Windows 7 picks it up and installs the driver. PS2 drivers are native to Windows 7.

2. If that doesn't work. Start your computer and then plug the PS2 mouse in and see if Windows 7 installs the driver.

3. It never hurts to do this little tutorial by Brink and see if the system files can be corrected if need be. Please read completely.

Answer:Lenovo S410p accidentally deleted NVIDIA Driver from device manager

hi Votbear,
Welcome to lenovo Community Forums!
Can you check under Drive D: if you still have the drivers folder back up
Try looking for the Video Graphics driver installer and install that.

Hello everyone, I had some trouble with my computer recently (HDD consistence error), which caused my WiFI driver to stop working. I tried to fix it by uninstalling and installing again from this site:, it seemed good - installer said "Success" in the end, but when opening Device manager, i see that Error 52 - Windows cannot verify the digital signature of driver blabla... I have Windows 7 HP Does anyone know how to solve this? I naively thought that drivers from official Lenovo site will be signed correctly. Thank you for any advice, John

I use a Dell notebook inspiron 15, windows 7. Yesterday i was watching my files and programs. I deleted some programs i never use. At some moment, i saw a program called IDT audio. I thought it was a download which i never used, so i deleted it. However, when i watched a video, there was no sound. Realising that I removed the driver, i tried several system restores. It didn't work so i just tried downloading IDT audio again. Despite the fact i couldn't find it in my files, it was selected as audio driver, with a yellow triangle though. It still doesn't work.. I don't know what i should do next?

Answer:Accidentally deleted audio driver IDT audio.

In Device Manager click on it and then Driver Tab, update Automatically.

If it is not loaded from PC or WIndows Updates after several tries, go to the Support Downloads webpage for your Dell Tag number, download and install the driver.

In working with a laptop with Windows 98SE and trying to clean some items out, a tab was inadvertently left checked instead of unchecking it (the Windows cache). It went on to delete the whole hard drive and now when trying to boot up all that appears is the "C:" prompt. Guess it has gone into DOS mode?

Since there is no emergency reboot disk and the system is not presently accepting the factory CD with all of the programs at this time, perhaps because it only defaults to the "C" prompt, those cannot be used.

Tried going to START --> RUN and then input "Win" there but that did not work to try to get Windows back. Would appreciate any suggestions to see if it is possible to get going again where I could start to rebuild the programs that it lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Answer:HD Accidentally Deleted

I'm a little confused. You say you

Tried going to START --> RUN and then input "Win" thereClick to expand...

but you also say

when trying to boot up all that appears is the "C:" promptClick to expand...

If the Start button appears then you are in Windows.

If you are only getting the C:> prompt try typing:
CD C:\Windows

If the prompt then changes to C:\Windows>

Then type

If it doesn't change type DIR and see what is listed if anything.

So while i was going through my Zune media player software, i was deleting music that i just dont listen to anymore.
i have an 80g zune, and i had to free up space to sync up my library. Quite a bit of music.
So in about the 3rd hour of deleting music...i get delirious, and just start clicking at things and deleting.

Somehow, I (while holding ctrl to select music) hit ctrl+A and hit delete. Yep I deleted my entire library. I'm awesome...
I deleted the music, not only from my library, but from the music folder on my computer.

The recycle bin only has room for so much and has only a fraction of the music I had originally.

I have heard legend tell of a mysterious place known as MS-DOS...and by harnessing its powers, you are able to retrieve any old files that you accidentally deleted?...
Are there any wise wizards who can tell me about this legendary mysterious place? (sorry just had to)

Answer:I accidentally deleted something...

There is no DOS with XP or Vista. The important thing is to quit using the computer until you have decided on a plan to reclaim the files so you don't overwrite the files beyond recognition.I've heard positive things about PC Inspector

I realized what I did immediately AFTER I clicked add/delete. No other AOL program is listed in my add/delete list, yet the program is still on my machine.

Wondering if there's anywhere I can download the uninstall program (I couldn't find it on the net) or need help deleting the files and restoring the registry and other settings manually. Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Help Required !
I accidentally deleted two drivers (serenum.sys, CH341S64.sys) which I required on my windows 8 64bit pc.
I needed them for serial communication with my arduino . I connected the same arduino to another PC (My father's) and it was detected . The other PC was a win10 and i checked the drivers it was using for communication with the arduino(they were serenum.sys, CH431S64.sys). I copied them onto my computer but drivers require a .inf file which I lack. So I have the .sys files but cant use them on the win8 pc.

So I have an ipod touch 4, and on my old computer the apps I downloaded were saved in one spot. Then, when I got my new computer, newer apps started saving in a new spot, and whenever an app was updated, it would be moved to the new folder.

I had assumed that all of my apps that I was still using had either been updated, or that just using them would lead to them being moved to the new folder, and so deleted the old folder, but I am now aware that that is not the case and some of my apps are no longer present on my computer.

Fortunately I have all of my apps backed up on my external hard drive, even those ones, though I'm worried that those ones may not be the most recent versions, and that in the case of some of my games the save files may be significantly far behind.

Oddly enough, the apps still appear in my itunes folder fine, other than that they have an exclamation point next to them and when I click "get info" they can't be found, but they still appear on my ipod and work fine and have the most recent saves, despite having synced my ipod to my computer multiple times since then.

Does anyone know what is going on and how I might fix this before I somehow end up losing the saves on these games?

Thing is, the HDD is shared as network storage, I deleted them from another computer, so they didn't go to the recycle bin... there any way at all to get them back? Did you write anything into the drive after that? If not then you can probably get them back once you go to the computer with HD and use R-studio.

I got a virus, which seems like a FakeAV, ran my Sophos antivirus scan, in the quarantine was an item called ZAKmem-A, sophos said the only solution was to manually remove the item i804prt.sys, so i did. It didn't work so i restarted in safe mode. Now it's obvious to me that was big mistake because i can no longer log in to the computer. Is there any way to undo this damage without losing all of my memory?

Answer:I accidentally deleted i804prt.sys; please help.

I believe the file you are referring to is I8042prt.sys which is your ps2 keyboard and mouse driver. If the file was named i804prt.sys then that was probably malware. I assume you cannot log in because you do not have a keyboard or mouse, correct? You may indeed have a virus. Try attaching a USB mouse and keyboard. You may be able to log in.

If a USB keyboard and mouse is not available, you can recover your data using Puppy linux. Download Puppy linux and burn the iso file with Imgburn. Then boot the CD and copy but not move the files to an external hard drive. What OS are you using?

How exactly did you delete drivers from your computer?

There are 2 issues with your computer that appear in the log:
1. Its 1 TB(931 GB) hard drive is completely full and has no free space.
2. No antivirus program is installed and running.

Your computer's ASUS P8B75-M LE motherboard has these integrated devices:

I accidentally deleted ComboFix by putting it in the recycling bin instead of using start then run and putting Combofix /uninstall into the box. Is that bad?

Answer:Accidentally deleted ComboFix

Not necessarily bad but by doing so, ComboFix related files and folders will remain on the system if you ran the tool before deleting it. The correct way to uninstall ComboFix can be found here. If you have not emptied the Recycle Bin you should be able to restore the file to your Desktop and follow those instructions. -- If you encounter any problems using the switch from the Run dialog box, just rename ComboFix.exe to Uninstall.exe, then double-click on it to remove.BTW, if you have not already done so, please read ComboFix usage, Questions, Help? - Look here.

So I was clearing out some stuff on my PC and I found a AMD catalyst software thing which I thought to be for my old graphics card (I recently upgraded to a NVIDIA) so I uninstalled it thinking nothin of it I then restated my PC following a windows update, and my mouse and keyboard was not working neither was any other usb device! But my mouse and keyboard still work in boot menus and in the BIOS so I assume it is a driver issue! I have tried my mouse on other pcs and it works fine!!

I was just wondering if there is any possible way to fix this, like downloading the driver from the BIOS menu or something! I need my computer as soon as possible

I am using windows 7 if you're wondering with an MSI MS-7721 motherboard, AMD processor I'm not sure on much else I'm not really a tech guy

Also my computer has a PS2 input for keyboard and mouse, like the old style green and purple so would it work if I purchased a ps2 mouse and then installed the drivers again

Please can someone help me fast!!

Does anyone know how I can retrieve it so they can show up for my movie files, etc.

Answer:Accidentally deleted thumbnails

Clearing the thumbnail cache will only empty the cache and not delete it. The cache will rebuild itself as Vista reloads the thumbnail images for the icons back into the cache as you navigate through Windows Explorer.

If they are stored on the easyshares server, you better email kodak and ask them if they can recover them.

If you deleted the pics from your hard disk, install it as a slave on another pc, download getdataback ( and install it on the new pc, and see if the files are on the drive, then you can retrieve them to your friends hard disk.

Hello everyone!

I had a dual boot on my laptop (running windows 7 and arch linux). I decided to get rid of the linux partitions and accidentally deleted the EFI partition. As a result, my laptop now doesn't recognize that there is any operating system on the computer.

What I have tried: I am currently using this: and the post by Genet with Option 3 since I allocated the space back to my disk C. I am running into an error part way thru the solution though where after I do "create partition efi size=260", it comes back with "MSR and EFI partitions are only supported on GPT disks. Convert the selected disk to GPT and try again". I don't know if I want to do that because its my local disk C...don't want to mess that up and change the format of that.

Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I accidentally (I don't even know how I did it) deleted my account with ALL MY FILES ON IT! But I know my files are still on the hard drive and in the computer. Problem is when I try to access ''Documents and Settings'' my old account's folder is still there but It is blocked. I remember blocking other users from my files awhile ago but I need to get all my files back!

It won't let me enter my files. All it says is ''C:\DocumentsandSettings/Owner is not accessible.

Access is denied''

Is there any ways I can get these files? I heard I can somehow connect to another computer and send them. I don't know. Any programs I can use? I'll even buy. Please help.

Answer:Accidentally deleted account

You need to take posssesion of it since it is not recognizing your current User Name as having authority to access it.

In XP Pro you only neeed to right click on the directory and select the Security tab where you will find the option to add your user name to the permissions list.

In XP Home you must boot up in Safe Mode and do this.;en-us;308421

I hate to come here with tech related questions and/or problems, but I'm really stressed over something my dumb *** did tonight.

I have three hard drives - a 300GB PATA drive (D, a 300GB SATA (E drive that contains my Windows installation, and a 500GB PATA (G drive that contains a back up of the 300GB PATA drive (both of which contain all of my important files, such as music, games, ect.)

I've been having trouble with my Windows drive for a while now, as there is some sort of short that causes the SATA cable to not insert properly. I was having trouble getting Windows to even install tonight, so I did something monumentally stupid and installed my Windows disk into the DVD drive.

I went to Windows setup, figuring I could create a partition on the G drive and install Windows and thus throw out the failing E drive. I formatted a partition, which turned out to be on my D drive by mistake. After fumbling a bit, I finally have Windows up and running from the E drive (didn't complete the installation to G).

Problem is, now both of my G drive and D drive, which again contain all of my music, videos, ect. are gone! I tried Windows system restore and it did nothing. My D drive is showing up as empty with just the Windows directory, and the G drive is showing up as unformatted and unallocated.

So, is there anything I can do to recover my stuff? Or am I monumentally screwed?

Answer:Accidentally deleted files!

I think you're screwed. Ooopsie!

I have Windows 2000 Professional and while trying to delete the 'Brilliant Dig' spyware I also deleted HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\. And now I cant open some web pages especially the javascript links. It says 'Error on page'

Also, I cant open Microsoft Word anymore. If i try to do so it says: "the windows installer service could not be accessed. contact your support personnel to verify that the Windows Installer service is properly registered."

When I try to open a word document saved on my C\drive it says: "The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options Control Panel."

In addition to these, when I try to update my AVG Anti virus I receive a message like there is a problem with the interface and it fails to update.

And finally some options like start-search-all files and folders and edit-find (on this page) commands do not work.

Hope you can help me with this problem?

Anyway, she informed me that she had all of her important contacts in outlook.. Is there any way I can get the contacts back? I tried running a "system restore", but that did not work. I have a newer version of outlook ('07) that I could put on her computer, but does the computer have a copy of her contacts? And if so, how do I put them on the new outlook edition?
I am really praying that someone can help me figure this out, as my wife is quite upset, and I would really like to be able to redeem myself.
Thank you for your input!

hi guys,

it's a little complicated. i have win xp pro sp2 and suse 9.0 on my computer (PT4, 1.8 ghz) installed. now i wanted to uninstall suse 9.0 to test mandrake 10.0. i didn't know what to do ,so i asked a friend. he said you need only to delete this two partions and all is gone. the result: i couldn't boot up my computer anymore because the system was booted by the grub bootloader.
i needed to access win so i decided ( i had still some start up floppy disk ) to install win xp sp1 on my d-drive in order to access dive c. it worked. before i tried to boot and install from the installation disk but this didn't work. after " windows is inspecting your hardware" the screen went black.
now what can i do? on my d-drive are still this two partion from suse 9.0. the computer tells me, it's free space but i have no access. how can i recover this space to drive d?
what will happen when i delete win xp sp1 again? can i still boot up?

thanks a lot for your help.

Answer:2 partitions accidentally deleted

and boot then go to the recovery console and type "fixmbr". If you are going to play around with linux as a second os I suggest you learn more about dual booting. Of course, after you install MDK 10 you may not use anything else. I installed mandrake 9.2 and haven't used my xp box in quite some time.

Help, I deleted some extensions and now my windows media player doesn't play any of the normal files it used to play. Also, those icons that appear on the bottom right of my screen dont appear anymore. Does anybody know if and where I can find out
what the default extensions were and get them back? Thanks!

PS. someone told me to type "sfc /scannow" in start-run but it would always tell to me insert my windows xp home edition cd, which i did, and it never worked.

I accidentally deleted my com surrogate how do I get it back

Answer:Accidentally deleted com surrogate

Try this page at bottom maybe. rather doubt you can do it but you can try a restore point. It can't hurt to try.Otherwise you need to re-install the app that needs it. Or see here. of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

I had to recently replace my power supply. When I restored my system everything that had been added since 2004 was either inop or gone. In the mean time my wife or son opened facebook or my space and hooked into a virus called "Protection Center" along with its buddy "Defense Center". I tried all sorts of ways to remove these tough viruses and finally wiped the hard drive of most things on it. Once I got control of my PC back I began reloading all that was lost including my security programs. I think I erased some important functions while I was trying to get rid of the virus. Is there a free program available from windows,HP or compaq or someone reputable that can show me what I am missing such as dll's or registries? Can they also show me how to repair these lost functions without having me download some program that is "free" and then wants 10-20-30 dollars or more to actually fix the problem?

thank you Den:

Your first step should be to find out what drivers you need . .

Right click on My Computer and select Manage . . look in the next screen for devices marked with a ! or ? or shown as "Unknown"

I was trying to use my D: Drive to store some data because it was 900+ GB free and my C drive was already full
So I decided to try to listen to the guy in this post and it has now deleted my D Drive???
I got to step 7 and clicked yes and now my 919 GB D Drive is gone? Thanks Dell
I must have blind because there was a box at the bottom that was "unallocated" that I didn't see. I set it up as a simple drive and voila, I can now put files on it. I would delete the post but I didn't see how to. Sorry!

If the OS is installed in drive C:, there should be a copy here:

While holding the Ctrl key, click on a New Task. The MSDOS window will be displayed. Copy and Paste the following at the prompt and press Enter:

Copy C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\explorer.exe C:\Windows

Let me know how it goes.

i'm having a bit of a nightmare with my dell latitude d600. I think i may have the sasser worm as when i try to get on the welcome screen, it says lsass.exe password value incorrect whilst processing getting onto the welcome screen and then goes on a cycle of restarting the laptop. I managed to get onto cmd and my files through a disc and stupidly deleted lsass.exe off windows/system32 thinking it would get rid of the virus when it made it worse as now you just see the curser and a black screen! I think that i should just format and have backed up my data but i don't have a windows xp installation disc!
Please help

Answer:lsass.exe accidentally deleted

Boot off of the XP CD Or download the Recovery Console ISO. Burn it to CD with IMGBurn and get to the Recovery Console. Here type chkdsk /R and press enter. The Check Disk utility will try and fix any file errors.
