Preferred Solution: Is my e6600 running at a reasonable temp?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Should I re-seat my CPU, maybe get a new heatsink fan?

Question: Temp E6600

Just got a new system and I am curious if the tempatures are good.

System is

-E6600 processor (not overclocked).
-Asus P5B-E
-2 GB Kingston RAM
-Antec 6000 case with 120 mm fan outtake (back) and 1 92 mm fan intake (front).
- Artic Freezer Pro cooler for CPU using thermal path

Idle, running at
- System : 39 Celsius
- CPU : 47 Celsius
- AUX (?) : 119 Celsius
- Core 0 : 27 Celsius
- Core 1 : 27 Celsius

Stressed with
- System : 39 Celsius
- CPU : 63 Celsius
- AUX (?) : 127 Celsius
- Core 0 : 45 Celsius
- Core 1 : 45 Celsius

I think the difference is to big for CPU temps.
Anyone ideas ? Should Artic Silver do the job ?

Btw temps are measured with Speedfan and CPU stressed with Orthos
Also checked the Bios and they gave a 52 degrees after the test when I restarted the system.

Answer:Temp E6600

Idle looks about right to us, based on shop experience, but stressed readings are too high. You might want to try checking it with a thermal temperature gun. As the stressed 63 CPU is a bit on the edge for a cpu that is not over clocked. We sometimes find as much as 9 degrees off with the motherboard equipment, so it could be a machine error.
A good thermal temperature gauge gun can cost $60 to $90, so many you can get a shop to check it.
You won't get much change with Artic Silver, but it is worth a try as you begin to rule out things.

Hey all,

Im having a bit of a dilemma so to speak.

I have a server system that is running on an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 processor. The processor currently handles all the needs I have (Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, IIS, VMs, etc.) but its probably a little taxed and I have plans that may see load increase on the processor.

I have a desktop system that is running an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor. The processor is way under utilized.

I was considering swapping the two processors but I have a few concerns before I do so.

My biggest concern is heat output of the Core 2 Quad. The server system is currently using the stock cooler to cool the E6600 duo processor (which is running between 30-35C) and is built inside a Micro box so upgrading to an aftermarket cooler is out of the question (especially since I am doing this on a budget)

My next concern is performance. Obviously the Q6600 is better than the E6600 but I am running a number of virtual machines in VMware which only supports dual core virtualization. I dont want to swap processors if the end result is no or negligible performance gain.

Any one care to offer some advice/opinion?

I have a pentium dual core e6600 which is supposed to be 3.06ghz, but the cpu meter desktop gadget is telling me it is running at 1594mhz. I have not done anything with otver/underclocking, so can someone tell me how I can get it to run at the proper speed?

Answer:Intel Pentium E6600 running slowly

Try running stress tests like Prime95, look at the gadget while its in stress

Hi there

running a fairly heavy but not unduly load the CPU seems to be running at about 75 deg C peak -- Avg about 61 deg C.
Is this likely to cause trouble over prolonged periods.

I know that these devices can run extremely hot but I don't want to break it if adding more cooling can sort it out.

Any hardware gurus out there --is this OK or should I try and take remedial action.

Answer:CPU temp -- is this running too hot ?

Ideally CPU temp should be in 35~45 C and for laptop it will be a little higher. Your temp is high but still within range. However, if you do some heavy Audio/Video Editing then the temp will raise up to hell. Try to clean up with dust blower and double check if the heatsink is properly seated. You might also want to put new thermal paste on the CPU.

Here's what mine look like running @4.7GHZ but again I am using H2O cooling.

I use SpeedFan to monitor my CPU temp since I've been having some issues the past few days. I couldn't get the heatsink to stay in tightly. I've had better luck today, and my PC has stopped shutting itself off. Generally, like as I'm typing this, I'm running in the 105-110 F range which Speedfan says is good.

But when I load up a demanding game, Left 4 Dead 2, it runs at about 135 degrees and SpeedFan has the little "fire" icon next to the temps.

So is that a normal temp for it to be at when running a demanding program, or too hot?

Edit: Sorry, realized there was a better subforum for this.

The laptop idle upon boot using Realtemp, gives cpu core temps of 45-50c, and after just over half an hour idle, its just under 60c. Running multiple programs at once can bring it up to 70c or over if the machine has been on for a few hours, with its fan running at the max. If I attempt any cpu intensive tasks, such as 3d software, it can reach the 70s, but it rarely goes over 80c.
Speedfan on the other hand gives values of roughly 10c less for each core compared to Realtemp, and although I know it can be customized, Speedfan gives me the 'hot' icon by default for anything over 50c. I have heard that Realtemp may be giving the most accurate values, since Speedfan has not been calibrated for my particular system. After a Realtemp 10 minute sensor test, my cpu can state it is 100c or over (realtemp doesnt show values over 100, when the cpu is running at the max).
How common would anyone say these values were for a dual core bottom of the range laptop system, and would you be worried? No problems in running to date. Unfortunately I cannot be sure if the system has always given these temperatures or not, and how accurate. If the cpu really was over 100c in a Realtemp test, working the cpu to the max, I wonder how long the cpu would likely last. Thanks for any info if possible, esp if anyone has a laptop to compare temperatures. I will assume higher quality systems will never go over the 60c mark! >:0

Laptops do tend to get hot as the airflow is usually compromised due to cramming everything in a small case so a laptop cooler to sit it on may help.

I finally got my new computer up and running after a month of fighting with Zipzoomfly, which I will never order from again. But anyway, I will get right to my question. I am running a Pentium 4 550 3.4 ghz cpu. Currently it is slightly OC'd by 10%. It is running at 3.75ghz with an 880 mhz FSB. I am wondering what a safe temp to run this cpu is? It is currently running at 40 C. I am using Arctic Silver 5 on it but I heard it takes about 100 hours before the Arctic Silver 5 is at max performance. Is 40 C to high? What is the absolute highest before you will cause irreversible damage? I will look forward to anyone's reply. Oh one last thing. Just one more measurement. I OC'd it briefly to 20% and it was running at a BLAZING 4.2 ghz with a 1 ghz FSB. It's temp while running at those speeds were 47 to 48C and if it is running just stock then it's temp is about 38C. Any insite about this will help me tremendously. Thanks for any help in advance.

Hey people,

I am running:
AMD XP Athlon 2500+
Asus A7N8X-D
Windows XP (Latest SP updated)
Radeon 7000 (I know, will get a newer one soon!)
512mb PC3700 RAM

I get no conflicts, but am finding it hard to figure out what temperature my system is running at...

Am using MBM (ver.5), and the three decent temp readings (e.g. not open circuit 126degs) are:
Sensor 1 - Asus 1 - 35 to 38 degress centigrade
Sensor 2 - Asus 2 (CUSL2) - 40 degrees centigrade (constant)
Sensor 3 - W83L785TS-S - 46-48 degrees centigrade

I have tried slowing my heatsink fan down real slow and running resource draining programs to look for temp changes, but the temps stay within the ranges (above).
Am confused!

Question: Safe running temp

What is a good safe running temp for the mobo and cpu?

My mobo ic currently running at 47 c
Cpu is 63

I this a safe temp or do i need a new fan?

Answer:Safe running temp

Your temps sound high to me. I like to see my cpu running no higher than 40c at idle, and typically mine runs mid to upper 30's at idle. I also don't like to see my cpu go above 50c under a heavy load. Its not that your system is necessarily running hotter than specs, but its hotter than what I've found to be consistently stable. With your board temp in the upper 40's, I have to wonder if your system has any airflow. Pop the case off and see if you got a lot of dust build up. Also, isolate your cables as best as you can away from the motherboard. Check to see that your heatsink fan is turning freely. Touch the base of the heatsink too ..... if it seems on the hot side, you may want to consider purchasing a better heatsink. If, with the case off, your temps drop dramatically, you would do well to add an intake fan in the lower front, and an exhaust fan in the back and towards the top (under the psu is a good place) to help with the airflow.

Regardless of what you do, allowing your system to run that hot could significantly shorten component life. Fans are cheap and a good way to protect your investment.

Hey all, As the title states, my CPU temperatures are running quite high. As I am typing this (and nothing else is currently open) both cores are at 75 Celcius. Yes I know this is very high. I repasted the CPU and cleaned out my fan as well. Has anyone run into a CPU running hot even after a re-paste? I used arctic silver 5. Maybe something is eating up my CPU constantly? The processes running are all standard. Any suggsetions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

hello, i just got a 3eghz p4, and an asus p4p800-e board.
however, my bois tells me my cpu's temp is around 45c-49c. this seems high to me. i called the computer store i bought it from however they said that was the normal running temp for a 3gig processer and said that they can run up to something stupid high like 80-90max. id take their word for it since its a very respectable place, however im slightly concerned because intels website (as well as the yellow attention slip i got with my processer) states the normal run temp is at or below 38c.

any thoughts on this? my system seems to run fine, im just slightly concerned about the heat.

oh and yes. i am using the default heat sync and fan. with the defualt thermal tape that the heatsync came with.

Answer:p4 3eghz normal running temp?

its OK, as AMD normally runs @ 55 (considered cool). and P-4 dissapate more heat then AMD, thus making it running at this temperature absolutely normal.

My firewall keeps triggering on stdrt.exe

from: Windows/Temp/mrt643E.tmp (or Similar, because it regenerates if deleted)

I can delete that directory and it will regenerate. I see other queries about this one on the web. It isn't tripping anyone's virus detectors, but anything that keep regenerating itself, running out of temp and trying to contact the internet seems suspicious. I want to know what it is.

That directory is also full of file ending in .mfx. Which points to multimedia fusion.

Anyone have this directory in Temp, anyone know what is causing it?

Apparently it's an MMF runtime. It appears when you test your applications via MMF.

My laptop HP Pavilion notebook pc, is running windows 8.1.
A few months ago my windows defender anti-virus would alert me and attempt to remove a bitcoin virus. It would quaratine it but I kept receiving the alert. I downloaded Malbytes Malware Antivirus, this seemed to fix the issue as my Windows defender stopped alerting me to the bitcoin miner.
However, in the last week I noticed my pc running very loudly and running at 100% cpu usage, one application is running 99%. I use my computer to do basic word processing and some internet research for school projects.
I read that the svchost is a bitcoin miner but can be difficult to get rid of if not removed correctly. I downloaded the Zemana Anti-Malware from your website-Bleeping Computer and it has identified the svchost as being a bitcoin miner as well.
Any help in resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi, I'm not a programmer so not terribly familiar with best practices for Windows programming. But what I am trying to do is vet a software program. And what I'm trying to find out is if there are any concerns with an executable running in the Windows Temp folder with administrative privileges.

This program puts agents on remote workstations. It creates the executable in the Temp folder and then runs it.

Now my understanding is that the default set up for the Temp folder is to restrict access (Windows XP, Vista) for local users. Would another installed program such as malware be able to manipulate the agent program to run at elevated privileges? What would prevent that?

Running windows XP Home, Asus MB and Athlon CPU. When I run the computer, the system locks up after anywhere from 5-10 minutes. The CPU temp seems fine, the fans are running at max. There is, however, the faint smell of something that got too hot at one point. When I try to run system restore, it runs for 2-5 minutes but locks up before it can complete the restore. I had a problem with my primary drive last year, I think the little whatz-it in the outside bottom was bad because the disk itself tested as okay, but when I replaced it all my problems went away. Is it possible that the same thing is causing this latest problem?

Hello Everyone...

I have a computer that got a massive virus on it...I'm thinking more than one...and I have run Malewarebytes a few times and it keeps finding the same ones. I also now have a "corrupted recycle bin" and in my "task manager" iExplorer.exe is always running randomly even when ie isn't open. I've looked in the services for this "Windows_XP" that seems to be the file that starts this, but it doesn't have it. Please help. Its driving me nuts.
Oh...and to top it off...under "Documents and Settings" there is a folder named NetworkService that has a folder in IT called "LocalSettings" and there is a temporary internet files folder that has stored 140Gb of random data on this 150Gb hard drive. I had 300mb left to use. I have manually deleted as much as I can but its starting to drive me nuts. Any suggestions? I am MORE than open to those.

Hello, forum.

A couple of days ago, I contracted the "File restore" malware. I, distressed, found your fix guide and began following the instructions. I've ran Malwarebytes, Rkill, and Unhide, but when I try to get TDSSKiller to run, It won't even boot, even after I rename it. I can't even get Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 to work. On top of that, my wife decided to go through the computer for some unknown reason. She went to the temp files and found a bunch of Images of porn, health tips, child care list, and lastly an image I use as an avatar on Seeing that avatar image led her to the conclusion that all said things belonged to me (pornograpy including). She deleted the entire contents of the temp folder. I read that one of the things the "Combonation of viruses" did to the computer was to move some things to the internet temp file. Evidence of this is that my google taskbar doesn't work, causing my internet to crash (i disabled it). Now, for some reason, my computer crashes when I'm in "regular mode", stating that it's missing processes and is finding errors. I'm not sure if that is a product of the virus, or if it's something the deletion of the temp files has caused. I am at my wits end and don't have the money to have it fixed by a professional right now. Even if I did, I fear the loss of important things like photos, resumes, documents. I keep hearing people who have fairly modern PC's (although perhaps lacking a good graphics card) talking about buying a PS3. I would like to tell them that they should really consider spending $200 to $250 for a new video card and using their PC to play games thereby saving themselves the much larger cost of a PS3.

Is this reasonable advice? If they were to upgrade an Intel P4 (3.2 MHz with adequate memory, hard drive, sound quality, etc.) by buying a fairly good quality video card, would that put the machine into a comparable quality such that it would run most games available for the PC such that it would compare fairly well to those same games running on the PS3?

It doesn't have to be extremely high quality. I'd just like to know if it would be reasonably accurate to say that upgrading a fairly modern PC (with a P4 CPU - not a Celeron) with a good quality video card would put it into roughly the same level of performance for playing games as the PS3.

Hey all,

I've been running my system under full load for twenty minutes.

I've got RMClock, CPU-Z and ATITool open to monitor, and I'm also using Orthos to stress my RAM and my CPU.

LeadTek 7950GT TDH 256MB -- 90 degrees
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2.4GHz -- 48 degrees [won't let me overclock yet, it's running at stock speeds with a Zalman heatsink].
Transcend 1066 2 x 1GB -- 64 degrees

These temperatures seem all right for twenty minutes of full load? I'm scrambling to find a VGA heatsink at a local store, but I've been told a graphics card of this power can safely handle temperatures of up to 100 degrees.

Question: Reasonable prices?

What would be a reasonable price to "reimage" a machine?
(ie wipe off all the trojans/adware/spyware)

Reimage including databackup and a reinstall of the os and drivers.

Data backup being a loose sense of the term and including just music, photos, documents, email, and favorites, and just to be nice also throwing on a few apps that are essential...itunes, aim, firefox, spybot, antivirus of choice.

I know geek squad's prices...and they are...about on par I'd say for the amount of time it takes to do all of the above but what do you guys think?

Good Afternoon, Gentlemen,
I am sorely, at least I think so, of the sound advice that you hand out, on a very regular basis.
I have had an Acer Aspire One 722-C62kk with an 11.6” screen and 4GB for a couple of years. And it has done – and is doing – the job I wanted it to do; namely to take on holidays with us so we can keep in touch with friends whilst on the holiday. But we are just back from 2 weeks in Lanzarote and I must admit that I have found it s-l-o-w. I do not know anything about chips and, therefore, would be very grateful if someone could recommend a notebook with a faster chip in it. This is where I will probably annoy some of you: I would like one that is 5 to 10 times faster!! Also I am not looking for a new notebook – these all seem to come with Windows 10 which I do not like – but a second hand one with Windows 7 preferably 64Bit Home Premium or similar with USB 3.0 port(s). I am quite willing to go to £100, but for a good one am willing to stretch up to £200. If a company that trades in second hand notebooks has options and any of you know a reasonably reliable one that would also be helpful.
I know I am being picky, but at my time of life I am getting more and more specific and that is why I am asking you gentlemen.
Any and all – no matter how rude – replies will be very gratefully received.

Hi all,

I'm currently looking into buying a new server for the company I'm interning at. The issue is I'm somewhat clueless about IT in general, so I'm concerned an offer I've received for a Dell PowerEdge T430 server which I've pasted below is a rip off. The price I've been quoted is $4020,10.

Here are the specs:
"Server Dell PowerEdge T430 8B, (1)*Intel Xeon E5-2630v4 Processor (2.2GHz, 10C, 25MB, 8.0GT/s QPI, 85W), 32GB (2x16GB) 2400MHz RDIMM, PERC H330, DVD+/-RW, (2)*1TB SATA 6Gbps 7.2k 3.5" HD Hot Plug (up to 8x3.5"HDD), Broadcom 5720 GbE Dual Port on board, IDRAC8 Ent., (2)*750W, No Rails, 3y NBD"

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Also if it helps the initial uses of the server would be secure data storage, hosting an email service for 12 staff members, and if possible setting up a hybrid disaster recovery solution, for instance linking the service to a cloud based service like Microsoft Azure.

If anyone out there can suggest a cheaper and viable alternative that would be ace!

Best regards,

but the CPUZ says 1.6, is that a motherboard limitation? or am i not quite set up in the BIOS to get all the clock speed out of the CPU?

or is CPUZ wrong? or what can i do to get the most out of my CPU? see attachment

Answer:I have a C2D E6600 which says 2.4 Mhz

Its because of Speedstep and C1E these are settings in the BIOS that automatically change the multiplier of your cpu.

Its to save energy and reduce heat in your pc. For instance when your not doing anything on your pc the multiplier used will be 6. So your fsb x6 = cpu frequency

For that cpu it would be 266 x6 = 1596

When you play a game it would use the x9 multiplier or when you open a folder it may use the x7 or x8 multiplier

To have a constent x9 multiplier just go into the BIOS and disable Speedstep and C1E under your cpu settings.

Question: e6600

Just bought the coolit freezone cpu cooler, and switched out my brother's 6600 for my old 6300, stress temps under full load are at 32 degrees celcium. Had to post this. Now I can pop out my old cpu for a 6700 that I'll buy.

what's your question?

Hello to all, this is my first post on this site, I've tried others and don't seem to get intelligent answers.
I'm building a Core 2 duo system utilizing the e6600 chip, I currently have:
-e6600 Cpu
-Zalman 9700 cpu cooler
-OCZ PC2 6400 platinum revision 2 (2 Gb 1gbx2)
-2 seagate 7200 sata 320mb (will set up in raid for storage)
-2 seagate 7200 sata 80gb (also raid config for operatiing system)
-Corsair 640 PS
-plan on Windows Vista Ultimate

My problem is, after doing much research for a good motherboard, I can't seem to find one! I've used ASUS MB's on all my other builds but have found that many are having problems with...for example P5W-deluxe or if I wanted SLI capabilities the P5N32-E. Does anyone have any thoughts on a board...even if it's NOT ASUS? I will use this system for both Gaming and Graphic design work.

Evening all,

I'm currently clocking my E6600 at 2.7, but I want to blasst it up to at least 3.0 if not higher. Unfortunatly there's no way the stock HSF is safly gonna let me get over 2.7/2.8 so an upgrade is in order.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should install? I'm not too keen on water cooling or some kinda vapochill sysmtem (+ no spare 500).

Been lookin at a coupla thermtake 'Orb' styles ones, or a VapoChill Micro Extreme Performance...

About 2 minutes in total here. A long tale of woe that ends with some questions. Please bare with me in the background explanation.

For over a year I've been having occasional flurries of crashes, hangs and (rarely) BSODs. Months would go by with no problem, then dozens of crashes or hangs in a week. The event logs and rare dumps have not been helpful. People here said it sounded like hardware problem, but no diagnostics I ran could find a problem.

I took it to a pc repair shop which could find no hardware problem (and of course it would not crash or hang for them). The suggested (as did people on this forum) that it probably was ZoneAlarm Internet Security. They installed the Kaspersky Internet Security product (for a fee, of course) and said that should fix the problems. 2 days later it froze 3 times and did automatic reboots 5 times.

I took it back. It still wouldn't crash or hang for them. They said Windows probably needed to be reinstalled - that my update from Win7 Home to Pro corrupted something. Rather than mess up the installation again I asked them to do it (for a fee, of course).

During their attempts to reinstall Windows it started crashing for them. They succeeded on their 3rd attempt, ran some more tests, checked the configuration, and found problems with the ram. They said ram I had was incompatible with the mother board and buggy, but the problems could not be detected by the diagnostics. They also said they had to reinstall Windows a 4th time because the 3rd reinstallation ... Read more

Answer:Reasonable explanation for crashes?

OCZ is high quality, but it is also one of the least compatible memories on the market (meaning it works properly with the fewest hardware configurations)
I use it personally and have for years with no complaint. ...and certainly without the problems you describe, though I always verify the motherboard/ram compatibility before I purchase a motherboard.

If the ram is actually bad it can cause any number of seemingly unrelated problems and errors. Since basically everything processes through the ram and it can be only one stick or one specific memory address on a stick that actually causes the problem. It's possible this bad address can go for months without being used until a specific set of circumstances pops up.

This is NOT a serious problem, just more of an annoyance which is intriguing me.
With 4gb ram, a reasonable dual processor and graphics card, one would expect a reasonably good performance whatever the case.
My automatic startup consists of just Avast AV, Java, and Malwarebytes although l also get additional icons on the taskbar for the Network and Sharing Center and Action Center.
I use Firefox as my main browser.
I also use SuperAntiSpyware, CCleaner, and Defraggler reasonably frequently, so l know that my system is clear of any junk, malware, spyware, and that no viruses are present.
I fire the system up in the morning, bring up Firefox and all is fine, and reasonably quick.
Do a fair amount of downloading using the MiPony download manager to access rapidshare files, but with my crap connection, the max download speed seems to hover around the 280kbs mark.
I may also have two FF sessions on the go, as well as the downloading, so whatever l do after that seems to really slow the system down.
I have even run ConvertX at the same time as all of the above and the system came to a near grinding halt.
Now l know that all of the above are processor/ram hungry but surely with my specs the computer should more than cope?
Maybe l'm missing something obvious or my dual processor system just cannot cope with more than two ram hungry programs running at the same time.
Has anyone got any ideas or do l just have to live with it.

Is this a reasonable graphics card?

ATI RADEON 9800 Pro 256Mb AGP

It will be used with a Gigabyte 8VM800PMD-775 mobo

on a 2.8ghz celeron with 1gb Ram, 200gb hdd

Answer:Is this a reasonable graphics card?

How much does it cost?
I recommend a 6600GT video card. It should costly almost the same, and you get a lot more performance.

The two bad things are these:

a) You must have a good, quality 300-350 power supply, from a good, well-known manufacturer, with at least 20 A on the 12V rail, in order to have a stable computer.

b) The performance of a 9800 PRO or a 6600GT will be limited by your current CPU (is it a Celeron D or a Celeron?).

Good luck!

I subscribe to Norton 360 but have got the trojan Antivirus XP 2008 with its annoying porn popups and messages. Via the chat facility, Norton advisors have removed part of the problem remotely but the popups have come back and other irritations, like slow running remain. They have now escalated my call to their virus specialist and want to charge me 70 for a detailed consultation plus check of the PC and clean up. Am I being reasonable thinking that Norton 360 should have stopped the trojan in the first place and it's a bit much having to pay them to clean up. I wanted to hear some opinions about the situation in the office I work in.

Recently we changed accounting software and my advice to change to Office 365 was rejected. Still all 15 employees want their emails to be safe and backed up.
Some employees don't delete their emails, so I end up with approximately 10 GB PST-file size per year per user. Of course I split them year by year. The problem is that they want to keep even pst files from 5 or more years ago. Always available. My idea is now, that I make a one time backup copy of recent years and a daily backup of the actual year.
I made some tries already with EaseUS. But I'm not satisfied.
I'd prefer not to schedule it and leave it up to the employee to decide when to make the backup. So, let's say the employee leaves earlier for some reason why leaving the PC on until 7 pm or so? Also a power cut could prevent that scheduled backup entirely from happening.
Here's a list of what I need the backup software to be able to do:

- Start the whole backup process with a double-click on an icon (on the desktop). EaseUS needs more steps incl. always having to set the Shutdown option manually.
- On the destination file storage or NAS I want to overwrite the previous file, not to create version after version. Or even better: Create a new version but delete the old version afterwards. PSTs are really a hard case since you can't really make incremental backups. I also doubt that some employees will understa... Read more

I have four rather old HDDs that are either not recognized by the system or that cause computer shut down when connected.

Is it reasonable to attempt to repair these? It is my understanding that the majority of all HDD failures are electrical and not mechanical. If this is true, then I would conclude that most problems are caused by the replaceable control board on the HD.

BTW I have a circuit board on order to attempt the repair of a 250GByte Seagate HD (a Barracuda 7200.10).

This HD seems to be an ideal candidate for home repair because it immediately shuts down the computer when power is applied. There is a direct short from the HDs' 5 volt input pin to ground. That short circuit exists even when the board is removed from the HD.

Obtaining an exact replacement seems to be the trick. I 'think' I have done that.

Answer:Is It Reasonable/Sensible to Attempt to Repair a HDD

It's not as simple as replacing the PCB on most modern drives, you may also have to move the original ROM chip or firmware that contains the specific drive parameters to the new PCB. Unlike older drives, new drives are all slightly different and unique. With the 7200.10 a PCB swap may work because its an older drive.

CPU: Intel E6600 2.4GHz (FSB 1066.7)
Cooler: Zalman CNPS9500 LED @ max RPM
RAM: 2x 1024 Corsair XMS2 @ 4-4-4-12-1T
CASE: Antec P182 w/ 4x 120mm Fans (2x Exhausts; 1x Intake; 1x PSU/HDD)
GPU: ASUS 8800GTS 320 @ 650/900
HDD: 2x Seagate 7200.10 320GB on RAID0
PSU: Antec TP3-650

I want to get my CPU @ 3.2GHz on a 400 FSB (x8 multiplier)so I can have a 1:1 ratio with the RAM .
I have been able to get past POST and even boot in Vista Ultimate (32 bit), yet my PC freezes after a while.

My bet is that the vcore is the problem, as it seems to take longer and longer to freeze, but I don't want to fry my CPU . Highest I used is 1.4750V.

Question: Mobo for E6600?

I will buy an E6600 and 2x1gb ddr667 ram first week of december to replace my current AMD64 3200 and eVGA K8-NF41-AX mobo.

My post concerns the right mobo for around 80.00 to US$100.00... I was going for Asrock ConRoeXFire but some people tell me to get nForce 570 and others tell me to wait for nForce 6xx series.

I believe nForce 6x series will be way above my budget, thats why I decided to post here so you guys can tell me what would be the best bang for buck for that price. All I ask is for 3 PCI slots for audio, tv tuner and WiFi cards!

Thx in Advance!

Answer:Mobo for E6600?

Here are a couple of possibilities for you. Since you live in Honduras, I'm not sure what online retail channels are open to you, so I went with the old standby, Newegg. I'll assume you have a PCI or PCIx vid card.

Myself, with the budget you have set, I would go for the ECS 570 board. It is set for SLI in case you go that route in the future.

I do have to wonder why you are going for an E6600 but are light on the Mobo? You can get a E6400 for $100 less, spend a bit more on your memory and mobo. In a few months you can hopfully save a bit more cash and buy an aftermarket cooler like THIS one and overclock the 6400. They overclock fairly easily to near the X6800.

Just a though.

Most E6600s seem to pull around 3.4ghz with some good steppings reaching 3.6ghz. I'd say you'd be more limited by the chip or you're memory personally.

Question: E6600 or Q6600?

Hi to all..

For some time now I have been trying to figure out what the best pieces for my new computer where going to be... I had selected an E6600 procesor, 8800GTX, etc. as I am a hardcore Gamer.
I do not live in the U.S.A but will be going there between the 6th of July to the 2nd of August to visit my brother who does live there and was planning on ordering the parts just before leaving so that they would be there waiting for me when I arrived.
To wait or not to wait, that is the quesion. I have been told that on the 22nd of July Intel processors will have a dramatic price reduction, enabling me to buy the same computer for the same price with only one slight difference... instead of having an E6600 i would have an Q6600.
If I were to wait until the 22nd of July, I would order the pieces on that day and have them arrive 3 days later, on the 25th of July, giving me only 8 days to build, test and make sure all the pieces are working. I have never built a computer before in my life so I will take my time to make sure im doing everything right. If a piece arrives faulty, I will have to send it back and the replacement might not arrive on time before I leave. Also, will there be a big demand on processors that day? Will I be able to order one for myself?

Those are my worries... What do you lot think, should I order now and go with the E6600? or should I wait for the price redctions?
Am I getting worked up about nothing?... I am just worried that everything might just not wor... Read more

I currently have a E6600, and would like to move up. I'm not sure what would be the next step for me though.

What I want is a pretty noticeable increase in performance, so a E6700 probably won't cut.

I'm thinking X6800, or should I go with a Quad-Core like a Q6600?

For awhile now I've been having overheating issues while the computer has been on load, for instance playing World Of Warcraft.

I assume a X6800 is going to run even hotter than a E6600, but I plan on buying a much better heatsink and fan (and I just bought some Arctic Silver 5 to use) than the stock one. I would go ahead a do that for my E6600 since I believe that to be the problem with the heating issues, but I would like to just go ahead and upgrade anyways.

Answer:Looking to Upgrade from a E6600 to ??

I don't think you will see any significant operational differences with either the E6700 or the Q6600... but must admit I have not used a Q6600 in intensive gaming yet...
If you use the X6800, I would add a case fan and a Zalman fan and heatsink... or better.

Question: OCing E6600

Ok, so I've had the core 2 duo E6600 since it first came out, and Ive really been debating on whether or not to overclock it or not and I have decided to do so. I do play alot of games and would like to speed things up a bit.

I have a Zalman all copper Heatsink 120mm fan and a 550W mushkin PSU, so I have ample cooling and powering ready. I just need to know how to do this. I know there is something to do with Bios, but dont know exactly how and dont want to screw things up.

Any help would be great.

Answer:OCing E6600

for an introduction to overclocking, check out CMH's overclock FAQ's sticky at the top the "overclocking, cooling, and modding" forum (which is where this question should have gone in the first place )

for an in-depth guide, google search "core 2 overclock". there are ton's of guides out there, here's a good one

What kind of cooling would I need to get the E6600 Conroe overclocked to ~3.3Ghz? Think I can do it with just some Arctic Silver and some 120mm fans? Has anyone overclocked this CPU, yet?

Also, I heard this bit of info, which I found interesting, and I wanted to know if it was true. I heard that the best time to get an CPU to overclock is at the end of its production cycle... This is because if they're just finishing production on a ~300Mhz FSB model and starting a ~400Mhz FSB model, then sometimes the manufacturers will actually just produce all 400Mhz models and just clock some to 300Mhz... anyone know of the validity of this? I heard it was from or something.

Question: E6600 or E6700??

what should i get the E6600 or the E6700??
are the only diffrence are 200Mhz???
does it worth spending the extra 240$ on the e6700
or just get the e6600???
and wats a good mother bored for a it with SLI?? that i can over clock?

Answer:E6600 or E6700??

i've always found it odd that people ask "is X number of MHz the only difference". yes that is the key difference but it is a major difference, the other difference would be that the e6700 uses Intel's VIIV technology. don't ask me what VIIV is though . in my opinion i don't think the e6700 is better value than the e6600. i can't really field the last question other than i hear the Gigabyte "DS3" and "DS4" boards are all the rage at the moment

My other question is how much does it cost to upgrade Vista 32bit to Vista 64bit? My software source (school) only sells the 32bit versions (for hella cheap).

Should I suck it up and get Vista Home 64bit from Newegg for $99 or try to upgrade from 32bit to 64bit (which hopefully would be cheaper)?

Answer:what's a reasonable price for vista home 64?

Buy the 32bit version from your school, and acquire a 64bit disc by other means. Your serial will work on either (Vista/Win7 are both this way).

I have Comcast cable. The Motorola Surfboard modem is connected to my desktop via Ethernet cable. I occasionally have to work with friend's laptops, and need to connect to the Web wirelessly, so am considering getting a wireless router. Trouble is, I can't find much info on the Web that tells me what I need, and prices go from $25 to $1200. I figure I only need something very simple, since I have no home network or multiple computers throughout the house.

So, can anyone recommend a good and relatively inexpensive router? Review in PC World liked the Belkin N, but have no idea if that's suitable or overkill or what.

i have been told 1155 is going away, but i was told that just under a year ago and its not proving to be true. i just came into a little extra money, and am considering the best mother board i could get my hands on for 1155.

this is what i am looking at. and im hoping to get some suggestions and hopfuly hear from someone who has it- - ASUS SABERTOOTH Z77 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Answer:help picking the best reasonable 1155 mobo available

Eventually, all sockets go away, but I haven't heard anything particular about 1155. Are you mistaking that for 1156, which is about gone?

As long as you have a good brand and a little bit of luck, I'd just shop on the basis of desire features and price/support.

What does "best" mean in this context?

That particular board is certainly more than you need for most purposes and would be a waste of money for a typical installation. But you may need each and every one of its features. I don't know.

Ok, I am basically new here and have a system I built in the middle of 2007. I am trying to see if it is viable to upgrade any of the components to make it a little more competitive for the rest of this year, but I don't know that there is much I can do with it without buying multiple components.

I have:

MSI AM2 Athlon 64/X2, PC6400 mem. capable motherboard
4600+ Athlon X2
NVIDIA 9600GT 512mb
2 gb PC6400 DDR2

I am currently running 64 bit Windows 7, and despite 2gb of memory it runs well.

Basically, I don't know if there is much that can be done with this. It's kind of stuck where it is. I could get a little faster dual core X2 processor, but I don't know that it would make much of a difference. Obviously a quad core CPU would require a new motherboard and CPU, so might as well do that with a whole new computer build. I could upgrade to 4gb of dual channel memory, but I don't know that games/programs would utilize it enough to be worth it. Video card wise, I have a 19" 1280 x 1024 monitor, so I whether or not a better video card would get a huge difference in framerate at that resolution I'm not sure.

I am primarily looking at this in regards to games like Bioshock 2, etc. coming out this year. I would just like to run those newer games a little better for this year until I anticipate building a new system in 2011. I have heard a lot of people say that 4gb of memory isn't totally used by most applications yet. I have heard that un... Read more

My wireless router does not seem to be working for Internet connectivty despite many reboots. It's (Netgear fm114p) been in use for less about 10 months. The only thing I can think of is I had some wiring work done to an electrical outlet. Since then, it started requiring power reboots during the day (due to losing a signal); then within the week (yesterday), the lights are not working correctly.

I have a very annoying issue wherein the small rubber V-shaped or triangular pegs attached to the base of the extended battery of my U150 have come off; so now the laptop wobbles when I type. I've called the service center (Philippines not India), they were very nice and courteous, but had no replacement part number so they cannot replace the part even if I am under warranty! How ridiculous is that?!?! It would be so easy to mail me a pair of pegs and I would simply superglue it on the base. What they offered is even more absurd! They want me to give them a $90+ deposit to send them my whole battery pack (that is working just fine) which they are willing to replace in order to get the new legs on it. We're talking about a pair of pegs worth no more that 25-US-cents!!! Does anyone have any solutions? Or is there some other mystical resource to get these rubber pegs replaced? This issue has been going on for two months, and Lenovo has not replied, emailed, nor called as promised by the customer service receptionist who said they would refer my claim to Lenovo.

I believe that I have an on-board graphics card installed on my computer. Previously I was able to use Google Earth, but for some unknown reason I was no longer able to use this programme. Various alternatives was advised via Google help and error messages, but none seem to work.My remaining alternative (according to Google) is to get a 'better' graphics card.Any suggestions for a straight forward replacement. Not into high speed gaming or fancy high capacity 3 D's. Something cheap and simple, with possible links would be ideal.Final question: Is it possible to fit an additional graphics card to on-board system!.

Answer:Cheap and reasonable graphics card

Yes it is possible for you to have additional graphics, you will have to disable your onboard graphics once you have a new graphics card.Do you know what expansion slots you have available so that suggestions for graphics cards can be suited to your needs.

Currently I am unemployed and so when I found out that my PC broke (this is a friend's) I was devastated to realize that Windows XP (Pro or HE) both range around $100 for the standard full edition. I am currently running it off of Bart PE but that isn't much help because I can't even view pics or access the internet. My other friend told me however that you can get Windows XP as cheap as $70 for the stripped down, "No Manual, No Colorful Box," edition. Problem is... I can't find this mythical store/site. Is he bluffing or does this place exist (and where?) Thanks heaps

I am trying to find a touchscreen monitor that is actually priced reasonably. It needs to be between 10 and 12 inches and the pixel resolution needs to be at least 1024x768.

I can't find any for a fair price. They make all kinds of good ones though... for $250 and up! They can't be THAT expensive since you can buy android tablets for like $150. Even mouser doesn't carry touchscreen LCD panels anymore that have a greater resolution than 640x480.

I have managed to find ONE that has a somewhat reasonable price but it's sold by a shady looking seller. Half of the reviewers didn't receive a working unit and the other half did.

I call ******** on these prices. They don't cost that much to produce. Something like that shouldn't cost more than $100. I'm not willing to spend more than $150 on a touchscreen monitor unless the resolution is 1280x720 or greater and even then I'm not spending more than 175-200.

So where is a place you can buy these from that are priced reasonably? If there are none, can I buy a $100-$150 android tablet just for the LCD panel, take it apart and somehow re wire everything up for use with a PC?

My nephew suggested recently that I buy some extra memory for my Dell Dimensiion 8250 computer, which is a couple of years old. Knowing that I have Rambus RD-RAM, he searched the Net and told me RD-RAM was both harder to find and more expensive than he expected.

He went to PrimeWatch and found only two websites which had RD-RAM available. Then he went to eBay and told me I could pay $400 for 1G of CD1066 RD-RAM or $256 for 1G of PC 800 RD-RAM.

I have two slots of 256 RD-RAM -- PC 1066, unless I'm mistaken -- which means I have two open slots. My nephew told me I could fill the two open slots with 512 PC 1066, which would give me 1.5 G total. Or, he said, my PC could hold up to 2 G of PC 800 RD-RAM. (All of this terminology is new to me, but my nephew appears to understand it quite well.)

I remember hearing a while back that the price of memory was dropping rapidly, but my nephew told me that seems to have changed. Is it possible that I could find better prices for RD-RAM than those shown on eBay?

Answer:How easy is it to find RD-RAM at a reasonable price?

I have recently attempted overclocking with my PC (specs below) and am now unable to use Windows, which comes up with the Blue Screen Error message 0x00000050 after about 30 seconds in Windows every time I start.

CPU E6600 @ 2.4ghz (cooled with Zalman cnps 9700)
Ram: 4 gigs @ 800mhz
Video card: gefore 8800
one 80 gb and one 320 gb harddrive @ 7200rpm.
Motherboard Gigabyte 965(p)-ds3
OS: Windows xp SP: 2

As I said before i recently dabbled in a small amount of overclcoking, I got up to 2.7ghz before giving up. Is it possible that this is the cause of the error? When overclocking I don't think i exceeded 60 degrees as measured by microsoft's DTS and everest420. When overclocking i only had 2 gb's of ram installed, i have tried taking these two out and swapping them with my others however this has not helped.

Does anyone have any particular advice on this? I have already checked as many forums as possible, and the Microsoft Website and am still unable to fix the problem.

your help is much appreciated.

Answer:Overclocking & 0x00000050 (e6600)

0x00000050 is the PAGE_FLAULT_IN_NOPAGED_AREA error

It looks like it is a memory / mobo problem. Someone else, with the same problem, once put his memory back to 266Mhz. (instead of 333 or 400) and the problem was solved. Good luck.

Hey all,
I'm building a new rig and was wondering if you guys were looking for a mobo to hold these 2:

The rig is going to be used for gaming, some form of DDR2 is a must, and 5+ Sata ports would be ideal. (4 in raid0 and 1 or 2 big ones)

What would you go with?

Answer:Best Motherboard for 8800 and E6600.

Hi Codemaster. I really don't do Intel but you posted this so late that nobody was around really. I saw it early this morning and was going to reply then but at that point it would have just fallen 3 pages back again.

There are some people on the hardware forum now, so I'll give you a bump.
