Solved: Problems with Seagate external Harddrive

Question: Solved: Problems with Seagate external Harddrive

Hi, and thanks in advance to any help. Today I noticed that my Seagate 250gb harddrive is not showing up under my computer as a disk. This happened after a reboot. It is the only usb device plugged into my computer and my taskbar recognizes it with the safely remove hardware icon. Under. It also shows up in disk management as unallocated with no partition. It has been fussy before but has worked fine for awhile now. Is there anything I can do or have I lost all of my data? Also it was pretty full with just 5% freespace on it before this happened. I know I probably should have backed up this data but now I am nervous because I have important stuff on there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Could a USB port be damaged when trying to attach the cable from a 1.5 T external harddrive. this harddrive was attached before I got this computer a few days ago.

Answer:Seagate external harddrive 1.5 T

Can't see why it would be?Which having said... if the drive demands more power than the pc - particularly a laptop - can deliver then possibly; but have never come across it.If the drive requires serious power i/p then use an external usb-power adapter to power it?Have you experienced this and this is why you're posting here now?

I have a problem with my Seagate external harddrive. It won't let my computer start. It stops at the BIOS screen and does nothing. I tried pressing the BIOS setup or System recovery but it doesn't work. I found out that my external harddrive was the problem after serveral tries. I took the plug out of my computer and restarted it. It worked fine. I plugged it back in again to the computer and it was detected in Device Manager but not detected on Windows. In Device Manager it said there was no problem at all. However when I clicked computer the external harddrive didn't show up. I also have to mention that I dropped my harddrive accidentally. It keeps making a beeping noise every other second. It was a regular beep, nothing out of the ordinary. I also tried diagnosticing my drive. However that was a problem too. It made another error. I also tried to plug the external harddrive to another computer and it also made the beeping noise and it didn't show up on the otehr computer. I'm starting to think that this is an external error with the parts inside than internal with software and other stuff. I don't think that I like recovering my data with experts because it costs a lot of cash. The ohter option is to replace my drive with another one from seagate. The warranty is still on and won't expire in a while.

- My 500GB Seagate external harddrive can't be recognized in the computer (as if it wasn't there) when plugged via USB
- It makes a repeated beep when connected to a plug
- I called technical support and they charge $300 for data recovery

- If my external harddrive has failed, then what are some methods would Seagate use to recover the data?
- Can't I just open the casing and remove the SATA drive and plug it in with my SATA adapter (i know it voids warranty, but I'd rather have my data back at a cheaper price than to get a replacement harddrive)
- Isn't it possible that the casing might've broke, not the hard drive itself?
- What are your thoughts on this one?

You may wish to look into Data Recovery or to return the drive to us for an exchange

If you have any additional questions, please let me know.

What does that mean?

Answer:Seagate External harddrive failed, back for $300?

There is the possibility that it could be the encloser that has died.
The only way find out is to purchase another enclosure. However you will void any change at warranty if you pop open seagate's enclosure.

My external hard drive isn't being recognised by the laptop. It is just making beeping noises. Is there anything I can do to get it to work, and if not, who should I send it off to, and how much can I expect it to cost?

Answer:seagate external harddrive doesnt spin up

Could be any of several causes:
Harddrive dead
not enough power (try with laptop plugged into mains - not on battery power)
faulty cable
faulty usb port
Is it making the same noise as in this youtube vid?

So I have a seagate External drive which had been working perfectly fine for me right upto yesterday.
My kids were watching a film via the drive connected to my ps4 and all worked well but when I went to connect it to my netbook to manage some files it was no longer visible.
I've done extensive google searches but not come across anything that would seem to fix my problem.
The drive is visible in drive management but not in disk management. I have tried or in all the uso ports but that makes no difference.
The drive now no longer shows up when I plug it into the ps4 which leafs me to suspect that it's had it and I've lost whatever was on it.
One other thing to note is that when I connect it to my netbook it makes a noise like the drive inside is spinning to try and come to life.
Having said this however it had just decided to show up on my netbook so I am copying the files off of it right now to make sure they're not lost. I'm going to say however that this is going to need replacing right?

As the title says, my new Seagate Expansion Portable Drive is not working in the 3.0 slots in the front of my computer. It only works when i plug it into one of my two 2.0 slots on the back of my computer, which are both occupied by my mouse and keyboard, both of them are not backwards compatible. When my Drive is plugged into a 3.0, absolutely nothing happens. i get a green light on the drive, but it does not show up in my bios or in "My Computer". Works perfectly fine in a 2.0 though.

My motherboard is made by gigabyte, and is only about 2 months old, and my drive is 5 months old.

Answer:External seagate 1tb harddrive not working with 3.0 usb slot.

Did you install the 3.0 drivers and enable it in the BIOS? All versions of USB are backwards compatible.

I have taken delivery of a Seagate FreeAgent pro 750.I have created a backup plan and put my pictures in to it.Every time I modify a file (JPG/.doc & .psd are the ones I have tried so far) it refuses to back it up and the log shows error 8. In fact I just downloaded some jpegs from my camera and they havbe been rejected as well.I cannot find the solution and there are limited help files. Can anyone help please?

Answer:Seagate external harddrive rejects amended files.

Autobackup.Maybe someone has used or is using this.I need to sort this out because the drive is useless to me if I cannot add extra files to the plan.It is meant to monitor changes and automatically write them to the drive.I think I might be missing something obvious but the manual/help is not very helpful. Please somebody point me in the right direction.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and post that It was working fine without any issues. I have two external drive connected to it.

1. 1 TB Iomega powered drive. - now RAW
2. 2TB seagate external drive.

The 1tb drive suddenly became RAW and I wasn't able to access it. before it happened, I had removed some virus detected in the drive by the AVG antivirus. Post that once or twice it got disconnected and after that the drive became RAW. I understand the file system might have got corrupted since couple of times my system faced powercuts and before I could shut it down the system cut off from electricity as my UPS died on me.

I haven't formatted the disk at all, as I have all my important data in this HD as it was my backup drive for office and personal use.

Disk Management: shows the drive is RAW but a healthy Partition.

I opened the hard drive casing, tried connecting the drive directly to the internal sata cable but the same didn't read even then and still shows as RAW drive. I got a Storite USB to SATA adapter and tried that, the drive is now running fine(as it sounds) with intermittent kind of noise (clicking etc.,) for sometime and then disappears. After directly connecting the drive atleast the below softwares are able to read the data in the drive but unable to recover it.

I have tried recovering data using the below softwares.

1. EaseUS DAta recovery - took too much time to complete reading - 17% in more than 24 hours- stopped it.
2. M3 DAta recover... Read more

Answer:External 1TB harddrive(Iomega - seagate inside) RAW drive

My recommendation is to use [email protected] Recovery Pro. I had a similar situation (raw indication) on a drive a few months back and I tried several of the leading data recovery apps, and the one I recommended is the one that found the most stuff -- nearly everything. It took nearly a whole day to do an in-depth scan, but in the end, it was worth it. It's free to install and try out, but you need to buy a license to do any serious recovery work.

I have Windows 7 Home premium 64bit as I recently got a new computer, and to my surprise my seagate external Harddisk did not work. If I go to the Devices section, it is listed as Desktop. I have tried many things such as, rebooting, trying different USB, Assigning A letter to the Expansion and a few others as you will see in my screenshots. Just before I forget my old PC 32bit Windows 7 Ultimate, automatically detected my 500gb Seagate 500gb External Harddisk so I cannot see a problem with the Harddrive or with my computer as it is brand new and fully functioning. Below are my screenshots.

As you can see from these images non of the fixes on the fourm, or on seagate work. If you have any fix please reply to this post as soon as you can, or on the other hand any questions. I will be very grateful.

Sorry about the thumbnail, Not sure what happened there.

Answer:Seagate 500gb External Harddrive, Windows 7 Will Not Read?

Cheers m8
SATA or PATA????

Have you tried to remove it from the ext case and installed it into the check if any of the electronics in the external case failed.
could be something with the usb drivers in the new machine... might try unstalling from the device manager the usb controllers, maybe the composite device then turn the machine off and let windows reinstall 'em again and see if the drive is picked up.
At this point I'd be asking just how important is the data on this HD... I'd even go so far as see if I could put the HD into a friends machine,(or old 'puter), to see if it could be picked up???? Be sure and copy the data off the HD while you continue to trouble shoot the drive.
From experience..... the only drive I've not been able to finally detect ended up as a dead drive, "bfh"
luk to you.....

Anyone use the Seagate Replica software that comes with the 2T External Hardrive? This is the GoFlex Desk series of external harddrives.

The software does an automatic backup of all your computers harddrives and logical drives and backs up any changes periodically to the external hardrive. It is suppose to allow full recovery (it includes a boot disk, linux based for restoring from the backed up 'image').

Anyone use it, and does it successfully restore the 'image' in case of a full crash?

Answer:Seagate Replica (2T External Harddrive) GoFlex Desk

Why bother using third-party disk-imaging (especially from Seagate) when Windows 7 has it built-in?
The built-in one works well, I've used it.

I have just purchased the Lenovo IdeaCentre 510 Tower PC [i7]. It came with Windows 10 Home OS. Within the set up, it asked me whether I wanted to install updates to Windows 10 - i said 'yes'. It took a good couple of hours to complete the whole set up of the desktop, but according to the log, all Windows updates appear to have been successfully installed. (I mention this because I later found something on Lenovo's website about updating to Windows 10 when setting up your Lenovo for the first time - it mentioned trouble which may include the damaging or disabling of hardware? I can't seem to find this again, or else i would post a link. I think this may have been referring to upgrades to earlier windows versions rather than upgrades for Windows 10 applied to a machine which is sold with Windows 10 already installed.) My desktop seems to be up and running but I have just attempted to connect my Seagate Backup Plus portable drive using the USB port and it will not recognise it (I tried this on several ports).  I can feel the Seagate working but it does not show up under My Computer or anywhere else I can see.  I have tested the USB port by inserting a regular USB pen drive and it DOES recognise this. The Seagate previously worked on my Windows Surface Pro 3 with no trouble and I have all of my files backed up on it.  Hope somebody can help me figure out what is going wrong...  Many thanks!

Hi recently I accidentally unplugged the cord of my WD HDD and now I cant access some of my files. Originally when I tried opening the folder, it gave me a prompt indicating that my files were in a different destination or something (sorry I dont remember it because it only showed up once) and after that, the folder becomes empty. I checked the properties and it says 0MB of space is used. This happened with another folder too, where initially it says its corrupt and now the folder is gone completely. However, the space is still occupied on my harddrive. I was wondering if theres any fix for this? not necessarily recovering the files, but maybe at least recovering the lost space? Thanks!

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

Answer:Seagate Harddrive test tool fail but harddrive data seems intact

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

Or the Seagate tool. Whatever you have. Your title is confusing.

Hey all,

I'm having trouble getting my laptop to properly recognize a Seagate ST332062 as external HD.

I have the HD installed in a Thermaltake enclosure and connected the SATA connectors, I'm using the external USB port on the enclosure and connecting it to one of my USB's on my laptop.

Laptop is XP, service pack 3.

Under Device Manager, I can see the unit listed as Disk drives -> ST332062 OAS USB Drive.

It is also recognized under the Safely Remove Hardware console as a USB Mass Storage Device.

However my system won't acknowledge the drive. I've tried browsing to it using different drive designations i.e. e:/ to no avail.

Anyone ever run into this with an external drive ??

I just bought an external hard drive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk, 1.5TB) and have some difficulty setting it up using the Seagate DiscWizard software.

The reason I bought this drive is to clone my DELL Inspiron 6400 Laptop HD in case of disaster etc. The Laptop HD is 140GB and 70GB are taken for my files / programs. So I was able to clone the Laptop HD but when I reboot, after I changed the BIOS settings to boot from the USB, the Laptop starts and during the process of loading Vista it re boots by itself.

Looking on the explorer, I have the Main C:\ drive, and then I have the Recovery D:\ (that is where DELL put the recovery files), then I have E:\ which is the DVD drive and then are the new cloned drives F:\ Recovery and G:\ Main.

Now checking the properties of F:\ and G:\ they are both formatted as NTFS and the F:\ is 10 GB as my original and the G:\ is only 70GB as the original so the clone process made the external drive only 70GB.

I think the problem is that the G:\ should have been before the F:\ but not sure.

Any Ideas on how to go about it?

I have succesfully used my external driver on my laptop for about 10 months, but i have been having problems with it the last couple of days...

When i plug it in, the "autoplay" thing starts scannin the folders really quickly... It used to take like 2 seconds, now it takes forever for it to go through... also the scannin always stops on the same folder (which in this case is "Matrix Trilogy" folder) so it will wait on that for a while and will eventually pass, and finish... Then i can open the harddrive and most of the time, as soon as i try to copy a file or open a folder, it will freeze...

Also sometimes it used to make alotta clickin it's being turned off and on...

Also, i see the "Delayed write failure" or something like that warning too..

Thnx for the help...

When I turn it on, my whole computer freezes for a second, then it goes back to normal. So, I am at a loss on what is happening here. Is there a way to retrieve the data? Any ideas guys??  Thanks!!

Answer:External Harddrive problems

Power down and re-boot...Let the machine run for awhile instead of trying anything right away. 3 to 5 minutes should do...grab a cup of coffee. This is to make sure everything fully loads.Right clik My Computer and select "Manage".Then select Disk Management...give this a minute to fully load as well.Find the external HDD and right clik it and select Properties.Post back with all the info shown...don't attempt to fix anything yet or you may never see that data again.

Hey all,I'm having problems with my external harddrive. Yesterday, after I turned my computer back on and plugged in my external harddrive, I got a message which said the "USB Device failed to install properly". I have not had problems with the external harddrive in the past, except for sometimes I was not able to eject it properly. When I would click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon and go through that whole deal, I would get a message saying "Cannot Remove General Volume" or something similar. I began to physically shut down my computer before removing the external harddrive when I got this message to prevent problems from occuring, but I guess it didn't help...Can anyone give me advice. Literly EVERYTHING I own is on that external. I have Windows XP and I've only owned this external for 8 months or so.

Answer:External Harddrive Problems

Well shutthing down in that manner and or unplugging that device your data may be toast...Disconnect it completely.Do a few cold boots. With the power off connect the drive.Re-boot and see what happens. If you are lucky it might show up intact.

I'm new here.* HI everyone!*  For the last few days I've been having major trouble with my external harddrive. Before I got my internal harddrive upgraded to 550gb and 2.2 GB of ram, my computer was running on NO ram, and 1.2 gigs. So, as you can imagine.. it was nearly inoperable.Because I didn't know the total state of my PC, I grabbed my external and moved everything I could onto it. The last time I used it was reeaaallly early Sunday morning, before I even considered taking my PC in, and I loaded all of my iTunes information onto it, just so I could have it for when something happened to my PC.I tried reopenning my EHD and.. it wouldn't open.So I thought "Okay, clearly there's absolutely NO MORE space on my computer to open it." And, that's when I took it in.I got my computer back later that day and didn't even think about seeing if my EHD would open. Just a few moments ago, I tried connecting the EHD to my PC and as before, I didn't open.. My computer started to read it but then I got a notification at the lower right hand side of the task bar saying "An error occurred while installing your new hardware."So I thought, "sh*t!"I know that sometimes USB ports can go bad, so I switched up where I plugged in the EHD, and it still didn't work.So now, I'm stuck. My EHD can't be read anndd... I have Storage Vantec External Harddrive hooked up to my Dell with Windows XP
and it won't let me delete a lot of old files i have stored on there that are taking up a way to much space.
anybody know how i can fix this problem?

Answer:External Harddrive problems deleting

You could try checking there properties to see if they're write protected or read only and change that aspect of the file or use the freeware "Unlocker" to remove any delete restrictions from the files before attempting to delete them.

Hi All,

Wondering if anyone recognises any of the symptoms I'm getting with a LaCie D2 160GB External Harddrive:
(on Windows XP(SP2) host)

- Will usually copy files from the system harddrive the first drag and drop
- any further copies prompt delayed write errors
- Then can't stop the device for safe removal
- The drive contents disconcertingly dissapear and the drive shows 0items on it.

I'm tried the Microsoft troubleshooter but as with most microsoft products its not worth the code.

I'm trying to figure out whether it's the system or the drive that's causing the problem - I think it's probably the system because I've tried the device on a m8s computer and it seems to work ok. I'm just not sure on how to go about diagnosing exactly what the problem is and how to fix it...

Any help or suggestions much appreciated.

I recently purchased a Seagate 500GB FreeAgent Desk external hard drive for backup. I have tried their software which leaves much to be desired. What would you recommend for both purchase and free backup software which will work alone with this external hard drive? I want the capability for full disk backup, selected files backup, and incremental backup as files are changed.
Only simple to use software. Is PC Backup version 10 a really good and simple to use backup program to purchase and will it work alone with my Seagate external hard drive? What about other backup programs to purchase and for free?

Hello, thanks for the board. I recently bought a new laptop so I decided to make my old harddrive into an external harddrive and bought a 2.5' HDD External Enclosure. It works perfectly for the harddrive I have but I decided to test out my harddrive from a previous laptop before that and the fitting seems different but there seems to be a slot built in for it but it doesn't recognize it at all...I have attached pictures to this post and was wondering if anyone could help me? Is there something else I have to add to it or should it work?

Sorry for all the pics! Obviously the one with the needles separated works and goes inside a diff. slot within the external hardclosure but still...there is a space which the other one perfectly goes into! It came with a USB connector (which works perfectly for the one) and also a "Crimping Sata connector" which I can connect it to the enclosure but I don't think I have a slot for it on my laptop?? Thanks for your help with such a tenuous problem...!

I'm formatting my Western Digital My Book Premium Edition 250GB external harddrive, but before I do so, I wanted to know if there's anything I should do before the format to NTFS. I copied all the data from it and put it on another, I still have some data on it but doesn't matter since I for it all onto another harddrive, and I will be using this (My Book) to put data from another pc onto it.

So is there anything I should know before reformatting my external harddrive?

I can connect the flat type A side to the external harddrive, but the bigger side type A won't go into the pc, and vice versa. Did I buy the right one or is there another one that fits into it? I have recently purchased a 320gig harddrive which i was hoping to use to transfer all my films and music on to. However i cannot transfer any file to it whatsoever. It is formatted as NTFS and i am using Windows Vist BAsic.

The error message i get when transferring is " This is no longer located in C:\blah\blah verify items location and try again"

What does this mean? The file is definantly there and has always been there and works on Vista completely fine so my question is why wont it transfer across?

Thanks for help

Answer:Solved: cant transfer to external harddrive?

I suggest that you give it another try once you reconnect the drive again.

I have personally plugged in a flash drive, and tried to copy files over to it too soon before the computer had settled on what to do with it. Before I knew it, the drive letter for it disappeared, and appeared again, usually as the same drive letter. Once or so, it didn't assign a drive letter for it at all, and when using the Safely Remove Hardware feature, it showed it as USB Mass Storage Device and nothing else. So all I had to do what reinsert it.

I recently brought a Western Digital "Wd Elements" 500gb external harddrive. I plugged it in and it worked perfectly. In properties it showed it was a 500gb harddrive (465gb).

Today I used a program called " ". I tried to use this program to backup my 80gb (74.5) internal harddrive. After starting the program and copying data from my internal 80gb to my external 500gb for about 5mins...I decided to stop the process because it was going to take 28 hours to back up all my data. So I stopped "". Rebooted the pc.... and went to my external 500gb to delete anything which had been copied over. I went in to properties on my external hd and noticed that my storage capacity of my external hd had been reduced to 74.5gb from 500gb!!!

So effectively I have a 80gb external Harddrive!!!!

I think must have made a copy of my 80gb hd and maybe somehow partitioned it to my external hd????

How do I get my external hd back to 500gb???

If I need to reformat or partition can you give me step by step help on how to do that please?

Im using Win Xp.

Well, getting my new pc tomorrow (hopefully), but was curious about external harddrives. I was thinking of having one, but need a simple question answered.

Can you install programs onto one, then run them from there, so as to free up the main drive? What I mean is, can I install a game I don't play much unless my mate is round, called Civillisations 4. Then, play it from the external drive, and it runs from there, saves to there, and no files are on my main system?

If not, can I do this. Load the game on my main system, but all saved files to go directly to the external drive? The reason I'm also asking this, is this is the one game we play online when he's at home etc. So, its an ongoing game, as you can imagine.

Not sure if you can access the web via an external drive, so if the latter idea works, that would be okay, I guess. As long as the saved files don't go to the main system, as I don't want to lose them should anything happen.

Many thanks for all replies

I'm considering a new harddrive, but until I ran across an attractive offer for the 1.5TB, I had been thinking of the 1TB instead. The larger drive has the following specs:

Formatted Capacity : 1.5TB
Interface Type: Serial ATA-300
Buffer Size: 32MB
Spindle Speed: (RPM) 5900 RPM
Average Latency: 4.16 ms
Data Transfer Rate: Buffer to Host Up to 300MBps
Sustained Throughput: Up to 115MBps
Ports and Connectors: 7-pin Serial ATA Connector
Manufacturer Warranty: 5 Year Limited Warranty

The thing that stands out in my eye is that the spindle speed is slow compared to the 1TB, which is 7200 RPM, but I think the warranty is a bit longer.

I recall recently reading an article posted in the forums news board that said that the 1 TB was the fastest drive in it's class, but the sustained throughput of this drive is slightly faster...I think.

The extra 500GBs would definitely be a plus, but would it really perform as well as the 1TB? Is there any other aspect to consider?

I pop the adapter in, nothing happens, plug the stuff to the computer, nothing happens. I got no clue what to do really. IF it can destroy the adapter if I put a ac adapter for a portable computer inte it while it was off, that can be it. OR if it got broken by safely lying in my bag. Just tell me how I can fix this, Please. I'm So thankful for anyone who can help me with this.

ideally id like to move itunes over and all my music this would free up most of my disc space
i moved my itunes music folder over but was unable to move itunes so when i opened it up it transfered all my music back and i was back square one !

im a novice at thes stuff so any help would be fantastic thanks guys

Answer:Solved: transfering programmes to external harddrive

Firstly you don't want to transfer programs to an external drive nor can it be done by a simple copy and paste - you would need to uninstall them off the C drive and then install them specifying the external drive - but again its not recommended to install programs on an external drive, but you can transfer data such as documents and music.

The reason your copying is failing is because you need to move the files a specific way since Windows and all programs expect them to be in a specific place.

You can move the entire My Documents to the external drive and that would include the My Music folder since its a sub folder of My Documents. To do that click on Start and go to the My Documents and right click on it and select Properties. Then click on Move and select the new location for the documents folder. But be sure to create a folder on the external drive called My Documents before doing that and selecting that folder. But then you would need to have that drive connected and turned on any time you wanted to access anything in your My Documents.

Or you can just move the My Music folder but you need to use something like Tweakui to accomplish that. See here for how to:

Or you could simply copy the music to the external drive and then delete and recreate your iTunes library so that library is being accessed from the external drive.

I am currently using a 160gb external harddrive through a 4-port USB 2.0 pcmcia adapter in order to get around the super slow USB 1.1. It has been working a treat for the past week or so but recently when i plug in my harddrive it makes a cyclical "clicking" noise and its light continuous flickers. Whilst this is happening, my computer begins to recognise the device but fails with the "problem with installation" message.
BUT; when I use the external harddrive on my USB 1.1 it works fine and normal, AND when I use other USB devices on the pcmcia card they too work fine as usual.
I feel that because of this it is not an error in the harddrive and apparently also not an error with the pcmcia card. So what else could it be????

I am running windows 7 on my laptop, I have an Hitachi 1tb external harddrive which I know that I must eject to avoid damage to the files on thedevice. When i plug it in it works perfectly but when I go to eject it windows keeps showing the pop up saying its still in use so I close all programs- onlythe ones that work in the background are left- but it still says its being used and i don’t see how. Therefore I can either shut my laptop down or take a chance simply removing the usb lead- I dont believe its being used but i dont want to risk losing my files.

This happens not only with my external harddrive but with all my external devices but the harddrive wories me the most due to the risk of corrupted files.

Is there a solution to this problem or is there a program that may be usingit in the backround? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A while back I bought a Seagate 1TB harddrive, but until recently it was just stored away and not used.
Recently I wanted to expand a XP system I have containing a M4A79XTD Evo mboard, so I just popped in the 1TB. But, to my surprise, the harddrive showed up as only 32MB. So I went into Ubuntu(dualboot with XP) and format the drive, then restart. Back in XP it finally showed up as 939GB. Then I turned off the computer. When I turned it back on later, the drive was back at showing 32MB.

The only thing that worked was when I used ext2 on Ubuntu to format the drive. I wanted to do a clean OS install on the 1TB, but no OS under the sun wants to install, because it jumps back to showing 32MB. I can only store files with Ubuntu under ext2.

I've tried the drive in other computers, with various cables, external enclosures, etc.

So now my question is, do I have a nice looking paperweight, or do I miss something important?

Hi guys,

I'm really in desperate need of help right now. My harddrive just died and all my essays and school stuff are in it and the due dates are within days.

So I turned on my pc this afternoon, did some stuff and turned it off, then i wanted to turn it on again but the harddrive is no longer detected by BIOS.The bios gives the typical message of no harddrive detected, plz insert boot media and press a key blah blah blah.i also noticed that the whole start up becomes incredibly slow, even for loading the bios setup. I bought this new pc during xmas and its just been a lil bit over 3 months.

seagate barracuda 7200.11 500Gbytes
motherboard is Asus P5QL Pro
4gig mem.
geforce 9800gt
intel 2.5Ghz

the machine's been perfectly normal for 3 months except very occassional blue screens, and now the hd is not dectected all of a sudden.

i did not install anything or remove anything in hardware/software,i tried a different sata cable for dvd-rw which is recognized by bios, plugging into a different sata plug on the motherboard, and nothing happens.

when i start the machine i can hear that there's a couple clicks in the harddrive,so obviously its still running, but after that its all silence and there's no activity at all thereafter.

does this indicate a dead harddrive that can only be replaced?is there any chance i can recover the data on the harddrive?

thx tons for any reply!!!

Answer:seagate harddrive problem

This happened like a day ago for me with the same drive. I fixed it by resetting the cmos, it was either that or the cable was loose (because i took it out and put it back in) so check the cables, if that does not do it, try a cmos flash.

EDIT: wait, the cmos flash fixed my 1tb drive, not the 7200.11, my bad.

I noticed on these two drives they have a jumper pin on them
with jumper pin 1.5 g/sec
without jumper pin 3.0 g/sec

If my motherboard is compatible with the 3.0 g/sec transfer rate
can I pull the jumper out, or do the drives only operate at that speed in a raid configuration or is it even worth the hassle ?

Answer:Seagate 500 & 750 gig Harddrive queston

THat jumper is so that the faster Sata 2 (300Gb/s) drives will work on the older Sata (150Gb/s) sata controllers. If your controllers are Sata 2 then yo can remove the jumper and not worry about it.

Hello Guys.

I wonder could anybody tell me: I have recently bought an external hard-drive to hold my back up files - However the unit came with a note from the supplier saying I needed to download a firmware upgrade to operate it in Vista. I have found this not to be the case. I simply plugged the unit in and the PC recognised it straightaway and I was able to transfer my files with no problems. It even ran it's first scheduled back-up without a hitch. I also used windows to scan on-line automatically if there were any driver updates required.

My question therefore is should I persevere in downloading the firmware upgrade as suggested or file it under 'if it aint broke..'?

Thank you.

I have tried turning it on before and after boot and it does not show up in disk management. I have tried it on two other PCs to no prevail so either its something i'm doing constantly wrong or the HDs eSata connection is dead.

Firmware 3.07
I have seen a lot of models that are close - just not exact match. I'd toss the drive, but there is about a years worth of photos on there that I unfortunately did not have a backup for.

Thanks in advance

A couple weeks ago my USB External harddrive got unplugged and when i plugged it back in, it asked me to Format it. It game me a "2HC015KJ" Error code. Its 500GB but now appears as 2000GB. Ive tried to use Partiton Wizard 7, but when doing a quick scan for a couple days, it was only at 163608 sectors, and still at 0%.

I use a Dell XPS with Windows XP Media Center, Version 2002 Service Pack 3. I have a Western Digital MyBook Premium Edition 500GB External Hard Drive. It looks like this:

Well the problem is that its supposed to be 500gbs or space. My pc only shows 232gb of harddrive space on My Computer and that its a FAT32 file system. The only thing I've done was plug it in and put doc, music, vid files in it, nothing else but that. At the time I didnt know if that was normal or not so I didnt do anything about it, but now that I've become more computer smart, I see that theres something up. Is there a way to get the other 200+gbs working from the external harddrive w/o losing my files that are already on it?

I did the My Computer>Properties>Volume, clicked on Populate and heres what I got:

Disc: Disk 1
Type: Basic
Status: Online
Partition style: Master Boot Record [MBR]
Capacity: 238473 MB
Unallocated space: 0MB
Reserved space: 0MB

I just purchased an Acomdata HD040FE 40G External Firewire Hard Drive. I have a Compaq (didn't know any better at the time) 5736 which came with win98 but also has firewire ports which my son has used for editing digital video from his Panasonic DV camera. The drive stated it worked with win98se and above so I upgraded to win98se. I installed all the updates including the win98se firewire update plus updated the firewire controller drivers but the computer still doesn't recognize the drive. I've even tried going into DOS to do an fdisk but the only drive that shows up is my C: hard drive. The DV camera is still recognized. I tried the Acomdata web site but not alot of info is posted there. I tried calling them but got a message to leave my name and number followed by a message that voice mail was unavailable. (That gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling.) They responded to my email by telling me to run the firewire update, which I tried again. Still can't get the computer to recognize the drive. I've now decided to turn to the experts" you! Anyone have any experience with this or any suggestions? Thanks.

Answer:[SOLVED] Win98SE Doesn't Recognize External Firewire Harddrive

If it isn't working I would take it back to get a refund or exchange it for a brand name model from a reputable maker. I have seen that Maxtor is into firewire drives now.

I bought a new Seagate 250GB EIDE HD 7200/8MB/ATA-100 and would like to replace my old drive with it in my Dell? Dimension? 4400 (Pent 4 1.80GHz, 768mb Ram, running Windows XP Home). I need some advice on how I should format this new drive and then clone and replace my old drive with the new Seagate drive using Norton Ghost 2003.

What is best way to format the harddrive to get it ready to clone - using (Control panel > Administrative tools > Computer management > Disk Management) or formating it via Windows XP CD or is there a better way/easier??? Thanks.

Answer:Formating and cloning to a new Seagate 250gb harddrive

You can use Seagates Disk Wizzard ( IMO the easiest & free)\

I have an external Western Digital 500 gb HDD and suddently it has stopped working. It shows up on the computer but it says 0 bytes used 0 bytes free. Ive done alot of research on the internet and found out that Testdisk should do the job. But after I've run Testdisk on the harddrive it says No partitions found when I tell it to analyze. I've tried several times and one of the times it went through a huge amount of files instead of the normal about 2 minute scan. This one time it had scanned just 2% after 4 hours so i cancelled it. What should I do now? I have also tried alot of those recovery tools, but none of them seem to be able to find the drive.

Answer:Solved: External Harddrive 0 byte - Testdisk doenst find partition

Does it show up in Disk Management and/or in the Bios ?

My system specs are below. My OS is Windows 2000 Pro, SP4. I'm trying to add a Seagate 200GB SATA drive to the system. It is to be a secondary drive, the IDE remains the boot drive for now.

My first problem is, I'm not sure which SATA connector to use. There's 4 - two are labelled Pri_SATA and Sec_SATA and use the Promise controller. The other two are SATA_1 and SATA_2 and use the Via southbridge controllers. I've tried PRI_SATA and SATA_1, currently it's on SATA_1:

I've installed Seagate's DiscWizard software. When I boot the computer, the BIOS does see the drive, but DiscWizard does not (doesn't show up in the list). However, I *can* see the drive in Windows Disk Management, but it has a "no" type icon (red with a white horizontal "minus") and the "Write Signature and Upgrade Disk Wizard" starts -something I've never seen before. I'm unable to do any management on the disc.

So, two questions: Why can Windows but not Seagate's software see the new drive, and should I go ahead and run the Wizard?

Any assistance appreciated. I badly need the drive to work, my "oh, it'll be big enough" 120GB HD is nearly full!

Answer:Solved: Problems installing Seagate SATA drive

I did a bit of research on the Wizard, decided to "take a chance" - only a chance because of my unfamiliarity, apparently - and was able to attach a signature (whatever that means) and format the disk. Currently moving data about, so my 120 can have room enuf to run. Oddly, Seagate DiscWizard *still* does not see it's drive, though it sees the IDE drive fine. Any idea why? I did get an appropriate manual after entering the model # of the drive, so I'm confused as to why it is so blind.

My Sony Vaio had some problems so I want to backup all the files onto this 500gb external harddrive. Only problem is that I couldn't get it to work. Says that theres an error. I decided to try with just 1 file that was 1gb and it worked fine, so I'm in need of some advice on what the problem could be. Its a Western Digital My Book Essential Edition, 500gb harddrive (465.16gb when viewed in Manage), FAT32, has no partitions.

If I can ask, why are you choosing between low performance 5400rpm hard drives when you could have a higher performing 7200rpm hard drive. Just curious.

My desktop computer's motherboard was fried in a tragic lightning accident, but the hard drive is intact. I would like to purchase an enclosure for the hard drive and use it as an external hard drive. I'm posting here because I'm worried about compatibility.

Here are the hard drive details:
Seagate, S/N 90Z7588X
ST 380215A
P/N 9CY011-305
Firmware 3.AAD
Date code 08257
Barracude 7200.10
80 Gbytes

Will that work with any of these enclosures:

Thank you in advance for any help!

Answer:External Harddrive from Old Computer Harddrive

Any 3.5" IDE compatible drive enclosure will do the trick. I use a ThermalTake enclosure myself (same as MadDog and CompUSAs no-name brand).

I currently have a laptop that is a few years old, anyhow I am building my own computer with a friend of mine. I have a external 120 gig Western Digital External Harddrive hooked up to my laptop now. (The external harddrive is brand new) I need a harddrive for the new computer I am building and was wondering would it work if i opened up the external harddrive casing and removed it from there and installed it in my computer i am building. Whats your thoughts on the change in power supply and could it work and what?

Answer:External Harddrive into Interal Harddrive

if you are building a laptop... no. it is built completely differently.
with a desktop computer you would not be able to either because the connection inside its casing is different. its better to keep your external the way it is and get an internal. you could then use your external as a backup.

I wanted to shrink my 120GB harddrive so that I can use dual boot.
I opened diskmanagement and rightclicked my C-drive and clicked Shrink and entered the amount. Windows then kept hanging and I decided to quit the disk management window.
I did this routine 2 more times but still it kept hanging.

Yesterday I went to try it again but noticed that the amount of shrink space I could enter was only 1GB. I did notice that after trying shrinking my drive several times, the empty space on my C-drive increased with the amount(s) that I had entered to shrink. But the times I tried shrinking it, it did not show me the shrunken space but it kept hanging, like I said before.

Yesterday wen i tried shrinking it with the 1GB it did not hang but it showed me the shrunken space of 1GB in the dskmanagement window.

My question is- what can i do to make the amount of space that i could shrink bigger?
I need to install another operating system on it and 1GB just is not enough.

Okay, basically...

My harddrive's space started to whittle down on its own today, moving from 30.3 GB of free space to a mere 9.3 GB of free space (I know I had more free space than 30.3 GB before that; that's just where it was at when I noticed it was going down). I found out that I just had to change the size of the virtual memory to fix this. I moved all of my media files to an external drive, so the only things that are taking up space right now on my computer are programs...yet when I try to run the defragger I get this:

So, whatever it was that was eating my harddrive space is still in my computer, and I don't know how to get rid of the files because I don't know where they're located... My Program Files only take up 2.5 GB of space, so how there's only 23.73 GB of space left is beyond me. I've ran CCleaner and Disk Cleaner, which cleaned about a GB, maybe.

It would be great to figure out how to get rid of these cluttering files, whatever and wherever they are.

Answer:Solved: Defrag/Harddrive Problems

A 149 GB hard drive with less than 24 GB of free space in it?

Disk Defragmenter needs at least 15% of free space to run, so you're right on the edge of its limit.

You have some serious de-cluttering to do.

Here are some easy and safe ways to reclaim some hard drive space:

1. Right-click RECYCLE BIN, click Properties, move the slider from 10% to 3%, then click Apply - OK.

2. Right-click MY COMPUTER, click Properties - System Restore(tab), move the slider from 12% to 3%, then click Apply - OK.

3. Delete everything from inside these temp folders:

C:\Documents And Settings\(Username)\Local Settings\Temp

If a few files resist deletion, leave them alone and delete everything else.

4. Empty the Recycle Bin, then restart your computer.

Windows XP Home SP2

I am trying to help a lady in our big town of 700, we all try to help each other, anyway I am probably in over my head. Here is the problem

When she first turns her computer on (and this has been going on for a month she told me) A black screen comes up with the white print and says

Dells Disk Monitoring system has detected that drive 0 (really more of a square) on the primary EIDE controller is operating outside of normal specifications. It is advisable to immediately back up your data and replace your harddisk drive by calling your support desk or Dell computer Corporation.

Select the F1 key to Continue, F2 to run the setup utility.

If you press the F1 key it takes you to the desk top and you can get on the internet and get around but it seems like it is very slow and it seems like things want to start up by themselves, like all of a sudden the creative disk thing will come on and then say it can't find the program or something like that, and seems like it will go to something else by itself,

I thought it might have something to do with a virus or anything, anyway flrman1 looked at the HJT Log and it is clean. I ran adware and caught some things and spybot caught a few things but this I have never seen before the harddrive thing. Can someone help??

Answer:Solved: Windows XP Home SP2-Harddrive problems I think-Need Help Really Bad

Go to the hard drive manufacturer's website and download their disk utility and run the software. If you do not know what is the HD manufacturer is, then download and run Everest to find out.

What happens when you hit F2?
