Transfer External Hard Drive to Caddy

Question: Transfer External Hard Drive to Caddy

Hi,

I have a Seagate Freeagent 250gb external hard drive for my laptop. Recently (after a friend stood on it) the USB jack has been pushed inside the casing. I went to a repair place but they said theyll charge about 100 pounds to resolder the jack. So I'm looking into buying a caddy off ebay, removing the hard drive from the seagate casing, and accessing it that way.

The thing is, I know absolutely nothing about the process..are all caddies universal to work with all types of hard drives? Have seagate encrypted their hard drives to only work in their casing?

These are probably very stupid questions but I know very little about hardware. any help will be greatly appreciated. also, please dont be too technical in your answers, treat me like a baby.

Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Recently my old Acer Aspire 1650 decided to die, and I now want to try and recover my data from the hard drive. The hard drive is a Seagate Momentus 4200.2 ST9100822A - hard drive - 100 GB - ATA-100http://shopper.cnet.com/internal-hard-drives/seagate-momentus-4200-2/4014-9998_9-31153841.html#info-5I decided that the best bet would be to get a cheap caddy/enclosure for it and pull the files off via USB on any new laptop I buy. However, I am confused as to what type of caddy I need to buy as most seem to say SATA or IDE interface but nothing about ATA - 100.Furthermore, if anyone can recommend a caddy that would work my hard drive was partitioned and I wondered if this would have any effect upon my ability to access the files. Thanks in advance.

hi peeps

im looking for an external 2.5 HD caddy. I was looking for a Western Digital caddy, however, cannot find any on the net. Was wondering if somebody could point me in the correct direction to obtain one. Or a extact replica

thanks in advance

Answer:2.5 External Hard Drive Caddy

Why WD in particular? It is more important to know what type of interface it is using, other than that, a 2.5" drive should fit in any 2.5" caddy.

I have looked around the "on-line" stores and am wondering under what heading to look, or what form of words to use, as Caddy is no help at all. Also any advice as to the type of connections and or specification to have will be gratefully received. The old Drive is a couple of years old and about 80GB, so I don't wish to dump it, but to use it as a backup device for my Laptop. The reason for the need may be a lesson to some of us. My previous PC was built into a "Small Form" MiniQ Case. The PSU blew and a replacement is no longer available as it was specific to the Case. So I am now being helped to put all the old bits into a new Case and upgrading to a 250GB HDD.

I bought a esata-sata cable and tried to connect a esata external hard drive througn a sata 2nd hard drive caddy. The result is that my T42 can not detect the external hard drive. The caddy, cable, and the external hard drive are all functional with other setups. As I know, the signal of esata and sata are the same. It should be just passing through. I don't understand why it fails. I observed that both the leds on the caddy and above the caddy are lighting when I boots T42. However, both leds dims after that. Any suggestion?PS. I know using a pcmcia will be easier. However, several reviews confirmed that the writing speed is limited to 30 MB/s through pcmcia. The writing speed on the caddy is at least 55 MB/s when I tested it with a 2.5 in hard drive.

HiI was hoping someone on the forums could give me some advice.I'm after an External USB 2.0, 3.5" Hard Drive caddy. I have an 80GB IDE hard drive I want to connect to my new PC, and have decided that it makes sense to connect it externally, so I can use it as a portable device.ebuyer are doing caddy's for 19quid plus delivery. But being a bit of a snob :) I'm after one that will look nice next to my case/monitor. The ebuyer device looks OK, but I'd like alternatives to compare. Hi,

I have a Laptop running Win98 1st. Ed. It's on it's 2nd hard drive. The first was a IBM Travelstar (model# DKLA-24320). It was replaced when the Stone Monkey Virus made it impossible to access the dirve.

Now I am looking for what I think is called an external hard drive caddy or enclosure. I would like to place the old hard drive in the external caddy or enclosure. The caddy or enclosure would have to be either Parallel, USB or PCMICA adaptable. I am hoping to then be able to access the old hard drive that way.

Is there such a Caddy or enclosure, does it go by any other name? If there is such a device please tell me the proper name and where I can find them.

I'd also like to know whether, this sounds like a possible way to access an old laptop hard drive?

Thanks

Answer:laptop Hard Drive External Caddy or Enclosure

You can pick up USB external disk cases for peanuts for 2.5" disks. I use them for traveling storage. Here's one typical example: http://www.imagestore.us/product.asp?pf_id=HY-2.5case&dept_id=04-005

Note that you may need a cheap +5V adapter to use this case, you can buy them in the $20 range with the supply included. www.pricewatch.com is your friend.

Hi everyone I have another problem A couple of months back I bought a External IDE hard drive caddy which is called Hi Point smart mobile storage. This afternoon it started giving me a problem, I went to switch it on and the computer would not recognize it but it will find it and display the hard drive as unallocated when I know the hard drive is in perfect condition and I have a lot of songs on it. But about 4-6 hours later I tried again and then it says it cannot load the driver software. IF this is any help as well there is a blue and red light on the caddy blue for power and red for hard disk activity the red light is always on it will not go off. I have tried lots of hard drives seagate, Maxtor, western digital and it still does the same. Please can you help. I hope it is not a hard drive problem. Also my punctuation is not very good I am sorry about that.David.

Last week the harddrive on my laptop mostly stopped working since i could no longer start the computer without it getting stuck halfway through. I have now replaced the harddrive and re-installed Windows Vista. My brother gave me an external harddrive caddy to use to try and recover the files i had on my old harddrive. I have just plugged it in but i can only see the Recovery Partition and *not* the main partition with all my files on. . How can i view this other partition? thank you very much.

the indicator which shows how much of the harddrive is full seems to be the same as it was before so hopefully my files are still there

Hi all,I've just bought a icy box caddy and a hard drive to setup for a mate an external back up device. However, my brother has just bought a Lacie external hard-drive and suggests it's better/safer to use/handle than a do-it-yourself caddy & drive as the "proper" external drives better protect and against knocks and stuff.(We don't want to take his kit apart and check as it'll void the warrenty.)What's the score? Is there any truth in this?

Answer:External Hard-drive Vs Caddy & drive???

No, an external drive is just as at risk as a drive in a caddy.I myself prefer the icy box rather than an external drive for the simple reason that you can change the disk in side and internal disks are cheaper than external. Also, is good for when when friends need to retrieve their from dead computers that they haven't backed-up!

my macbook pro is currently our of commission due to a mishap with a cup of water. the person i spoke to on the phone at the apple store said to have the hard drive transferred to an external one in case they need to reformat it. is this even possible if my laptop won't turn on?

Answer:transfer data from laptop hard drive to external hard drive

Depends on the type of water damage has been done.
If your laptop has been a small puddle of water for a little bit of time, yes it will mess up your hdd's connectors and possibly damage it.
If the water spill was like a splash on the keyboard and quickly cleaned up, you have a good chance of the hdd working.
Just depends on what got damaged badly enough for something not to turn on for quite awhile.

Also get rid of that macbooks battery, I have a bad feeling it might not work with your macbook anymore.

I just bought a Western Digital 250 GB My Book for my PC. It is connected through a USB 2.0 PCI hub that had not caused me any problems with my iPod in the past. When I transfer files from my Boot drive to the external everything goes very smoothly and quickly. However, when I try to transfer back to the Boot drive it takes forever. I tried to transfer a 350 Mb video file and I let it run overnight and 8 hours later it was still less than half done and it said it would take another 183 minutes, exactly what it said when I left it the night before. Is there some way to make file transferring faster, or for that matter even possible between these two drives. I'm going nuts because I moved all of my digital pictures onto this drive and if this is a permanent problem then I need to figure out how to retrieve them.

Answer:External hard drive file transfer

Try to bypass the USB hub and connect it directly to your computer. See if that makes a faster transfer or not.

I need help once again. I have a windows 98se based computer. I added a1 second internal hard drive. I now need to copy this drive to an external hard drive. I have had no luck.I use the external drive with a laptop running windows xp home. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Answer:transfer from computer to external hard drive

I guess the first step is to get the external drive working. You can start by telling us how it's interfaced, I presume USB or Firewire.

You need for partition and format the drive before you can use it, that's probably the first issue. Since it's an external, run FDISK from a DOS window under W98 and partition the drive, I'd make it an extended DOS partition. Then, use FORMAT to prepare it for use. After rebooting, you should see it in My Computer.

I'm not sure it needs to be more complicated than a) creating a directory called 'music' or whatever on the Dell, then copy and paste to it from the external drive using Windows Explorer, and b) rather than 'disabling' WMP, just change the file associations so that all your music files are associated with Winamp rather than WMP. Or am I missing something?

Hello guys I am new here and i would like to ask and share my problems to you guys!
I'm running Windows XP,yes it is SP3 and yes it is connected into a USB 2.0 port. I got 2 problems here: 1. I bought my WD passport elite 500gb last year, it's speed before was 22.4mb/s average and until i formatted it (not really sure if this did the problem) for 3 partitions all NTFS, i noticed that the transfer rate gotten slower to 2.0mb/s, did some error checking and it says it's just fine. So everytime i like transfer files (just FYI i did not transfer files from partition to the partition that i made) like a 350mb size file, it takes like 120 minutes and so i just don't continue coz i've been waiting longer than i use to. Tried formatting it again to one partition it still slow. I download the file from WD support for formatting it to FAT32 again and not a change. And 2: I noticed that before i got that problem, i installed the windows update (not really sure if this did the problem too ) and when i turn my laptop on, my SCSI and RAID controllers driver is missing (!), updated it..didnt work, tried reinstalling it...didnt work also and i also noticed that the name of the drive kept changing when i reinstall it. name of the drive:A234WI10 IDE Controller then it's gonna change again to another name like A543WI21 " ".

So guys I don't know what to fix here anymore, and all i can think of is replacing it but i can't find the receipt for the... Read more

Hello everyone,

For those who do not need more info, why is my transfer speed at 20% of the wireless cards' maximums with a workgroup mapped external HD connected to 1 computer?

For more info, continue reading.

I have a WD MyBook 320GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive (7200 RPM) connected to my main desktop computer. That computer has a USB 2.0 wireless adapter (54Mb/s). I have a laptop (5400 RPM) with an internal 54 Mb/s wireless card and the external hard drive is mapped as a network drive on my laptop for ease of access, sharing, storage, etc. My question is about transfer rates:

If I am doing my math right, a 261 megabyte file (~2088 megabits) should be transferring from my external HD to my laptop in about 40 seconds (2088 mbps / 54 mbps = 38 2/3 s). The reality is it takes closer to more than 4 minutes. I checked task managers inbuilt network monitor, and of the 54 mb per second, both computers show usage hovering around 19-20%.

So...why is my transfer speed at 20% of the wireless cards' maximums? Is this a HD i/o bottleneck? I hardly think it's THAT slow...again, if my math is right, I'm moving at about 10.8 mb/s, 1.3 MB/s? Wheres the bottleneck if I can connect my hard drive via USB to my laptop and get much faster transfer speeds? The same file transfers in about 10 seconds, or 208.8 mb/s (26.1MB/s) when connected through USB 2.0. So, it's 2000% faster through USB than my 54mb/s wireless connection which is actually running at about 11mb/s.

So the b... Read more

Answer:USB External Hard drive Taking Ages to Transfer files

Transferring that much data from USB to USB will take a long time. You'll be lucky to get 6Mbits/s since the bandwidth is shared. If you have other interrupt driven devices on USB, like a keyboard and/or mouse, it will drop even more.

If possible, try plugging the two drives into different hubs. Typically, the front panel and rear panel ports are on different hubs but not always. You'll need to check your hardware configuration to verify this. If your copy procedure is reoccurring, it might be worthwhile using eSATA ports or at least for one drive.

Hi Everyone.

I have recently had to format my hard drive and re-install windows. I have also had to replace the motherboard, CPU and power supply. I borrowed a 1.5 TB Freecom firewire external hard drive from a friend to back-up important data before the format, but the transfer speed is uselessly slow now that I am attempting to put the data back on the drive.

I have tried:

- updating the drivers for the firewire card
- switching to 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (legacy) in the device manager
- Optimizing the drive for 'better performance' as opposed to 'speedy removal' in the drive's properties.

As things stand at the moment, I am getting about 400 kb/ps transfer speed from the external to my on-board drive. As you can imagine, this is virtually useless to me, considering I have hundreds of gigabytes worth of data to transfer.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Extremely slow transfer speed from external hard drive

The best option if the external HD offers an eSata port would be to plug the drive in by either an eSata port provided with the case you or by an addon eSata card. Even when backing things up on a drive in a usb enclosure like seeing a full system image made the data transfer rate slows to a crawl.

One example for that was an image made from a 7 laptop to the drive in the external enclosure taking some 3hrs. to finish from a 120gb drive with hardly anything on it and comparing that to an image totally 497gb made to another internal drive on the desktop here only taking about 35min.!

Unfortunately the only other option would be removing the drive from the self contained external casing it came in to install internally like I did with one WD Essentials 500gb model during the beta and RC testing of 7 simply to add in an extra drive. Otherwise you have to suffer with what the firewire bus will allow.

Of course if it did have an eSata port you could also open the side cover on the case while powered down long enough to plug the drive into a port on the board long enough to see everything copied over which would be faster but just a little awkward. Then you would be using the onboard sata controllers.

The last couple of weeks it's got really slow (less than a MBs) when transferring a video file.

USB drivers are up to date Driver Booster 3 says.
Is there some settings I could try to speed things up?

As far as I know I've not changed anything so I don't know why it's suddenly got so slow.

Answer:Extremely slow transfer speed to external hard drive

If you right click the drive in Device Manager and look through the Properties you may see an option to either treat the drive as removable or permanent. Removable supposedly you can unplug without ejecting. But it is slow. Permanent supposedly enables write caching. Likely it was set to permanent before.

If nothing seems apropos you can try the old trick of deleting the drivers and rebooting. Plug and play will install the same drivers that were there but will do it "right" somehow. I have seen a lot of problems disappear just by doing this on a particular device. That is why support does it. Anecdotal success rate seems to me around 50%.

I am trying to extract a mig file from my old hard drive that was using xp. It was saved as a mig file as i used windows easy transfer. Vista will not open and keeps sending me back to windows easy transfer to transfer again.....

Any help?

Hi All,
I'm hoping that some of the gurus in this area can help me to resolve why my transfer rate to my external hard drive is so slow (ranges from 200 kbps to 15 kbps), but is almost always in the 15-20 kbps range vs. an advertised/expected transfer rate of

5 Gbps.  That's < 1% of expected transfer rate.  Any thoughts on possible root causes that I should investigate?

I have an HP Probook 430 G1 laptop with a Samsung SSD 850 PRO 256 GB SCSI internal hard drive and 4 GB RAM running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 64-bit. I also have a Western Digital My Passport Ultra 1 TB external hard driveBoth the internal drive and the external drive are bitlocker encryptedI've connected the drives via USB 3.0 ports + cable. I've also connected the drives via USB 2.0 port on laptop and USB 3.0 cable.I've checked the My Passport for errors and found none.
Any insight would be much appreciated.

Hi, After weeks of trying to get an answer to this problem without any assistance, either online or here (what's the use of a warranty when there's no customer service to speak of?) I tried transferring some files to my flash drive a day ago. The thing that happened now was that the transfer started out fine for the first few seconds (as usual), before crawling to a halt and then stopping completely - I can't remember what the exact message was, but it was something in the vein of "problems with disk". I then found out that I could neither add or delete files to the flash drive as it had been write protected. I searched online for how I could remove this protection (regedit, command prompt), but nothing helped - to my great, great frustration. Therefore, the flash drive is now useless to me, thanks to the laptop. I then experienced that the external hard drive that I tried to transfer the files from had also been write protected! Before pulling out my hair I checked if this was also the case when I plugged it in to another laptop (Asus). It wasn't. But on my Lenovo z50-75 that hard drive is useless for some strange reason. After experiencing this mountain of problems I want to do a full factory reset on my laptop, and then reinstall all my programs. My question is how I go about doing this. And also: when doing the reset, will it boot up with Windows 10, as it did when I purchased the laptop a little over a year ago?

Hi
Windows XP, probably Home version, would not boot into either safe or normal modes. Used live media to check condition of the hdd and also removed a couple of Trojans again using a live bootable anti virus disk.

Since then opted to use the Recovery console and attempted to "fixboot c:" but oops now cant even use the recovery console. The issue is "c:\windows\system32\config\system" file corruption. Maybe it is simply a question of copying files to ****.old or .bak and recreating them but from which location?

Because the recovery console will now not work I removed the hdd and loaded it into an external caddy and can now see its BOOT BACKUP & RECOVERY partitions with all of the directories; although the backup partition is pretty much blank , and the recovery partition has stuff but nothing obvious to attempt

The question is what to do I do to try to make this hard drive bootable again

Any suggestions gratefully received. TIA

Dear All,

This is my first ever post here. I bought a new Hitachi 300GB hard disc. I put that in a caddy and connect it via a USB port to my computer. I partitioned it into 200GB and 100GB. I tried to clone the C disc of my computer onto this new hard disc with Acronis True.

I tried to swap the new hard disc with the already installed one but it would not work. I swapped to the old one again and tried to use the disc managment. Now the clone does not appear and I also have lost the 200GB space. The disc management shows only a single partition of about 90GB. The two partitions are disappeared.

Spent almost the whole night. Please help to
1. recover the space
2. clone the hard disc.

Can anyone tell me how much current is used by a SSD drive mounted in an external USB caddy? I am wondering if I can connect it to the USB input of a Humax HDR-1100S box.
I have tried to get the answer from Humax and from the Hummy support Forum with no success.

Answer:Current draw of SSD drive in external caddy

SSDs use 2 to 4 watts as opposed to 6 -7 watts used by a portable HDD (wich works fine in my Humax Fox T2 front or rear USB ports)
Therefor a SSD in a caddy should work fine.

I have posted separately on the sudden death of my laptop. It seems that a fault in the mains adapter spiked the power supply and wrecked the motherboard.
The repair shop which confirmed the diagnosis has kindly removed the hard drive and put it into a "caddy" enclosure so that I can recover documents etc.
I'm wondering what else I can salvage. I could do with using the CD/DVD Read/Write drive, as our netbook doesn't have one. So I would like to extract the CD/DVD drive and put it into a case/caddy with a USB connection so that I can use it as an external DVD reader/writer.

is this possible? The DVD drive, though removable, has a slightly "shaped" front panel as it aligned with the laptop casing. I have browsed and googled and although there are lots of hard-drive enclosures, I am finding it hard to identify the right size/shape of "box" to house a DVD drive.
as well as the enclosure or box, presumably I need some sort of circuitry or adapter inside it with USB connections at one end and whatever other kind of connections the DVD drive itself needs? I confess I don't know the difference between IDE and SATA plugs and/or sockets....

Can anyone help me with the search for the right enclosure kit, and - even better - a pointer to some sort of tutorial about how to connect it all up and turn the internal laptop DVD unit into an external accessory?
Or is it all more trouble than it's worth? I just don't like throwing out parts that I feel could be (re)used.

Answer:External caddy or enclosure for salvaged DVD drive?

More costly & trouble than it's worth, an external dvd/rw is cheap to buy, memory might be salvagable but depends on how old / make/type it is, or maybe sell laptop complete for parts.

Hi

I'm helping out a friend to try and recover data from her crashed computer. i have a USB / IDE caddy, have removed the hard drive and plugged in - having removed the jumper from the back panel as advised (in fact I've also tried it plugged into the slave part).

I connect up, the blue light comes on on the caddy - I have seen drive letter H assigned to it in disk management but can not see the drive assigned within my computer so cannot access the drive. So it's as if the drive is seen *somewhere* on the pc but not in a way that I can access it or download the data from.

As I have already done this for my own pc (connected a hard drive and downloaded all data) I know that I CAN do it but not on this hard drive for some reason.

I've even downloaded tweak ui in case a drive letter wasn't able to be seen but that doesn't help either.

When I connect the hard drive the whole pc slows down as well - so it is seen somewhere by this pc.

Any thoughts much appreciated!

Yes for documents, music, film and photos. You can even transfer any zipped files for extracting and installing. Just find the folders and files. As for the installed programs on the XP disc, then no, you can't transfer them.

Sounds like you should probably get a genuine part, or perhaps you got a defective generic, of the drive isn't fully engaged in the plug. Can you tell if the bios regognizes the drive as being there?  Also, is this an IDE or SATA adapter?

I have a hard drive taken from a PC that died on me (motherboard failure)
I put it in a caddy and connected to my new Pc and tried to format it. When trying to format it the Drive letter came up as "C" which it was on the old PC, my new Pc has the same drive letter and I was afraid I would damage my new Pc so I cancelled the formatting.
I went to computer - manage - Disk management, and tried to assign a new drive letter but not successfully Drive G. this flashes up intermittently.
Is there anything I can do to formatt this hard drive.

Answer:Hard drive in caddy will not format

You should be able to assign a new identity to the (now external) drive unless for some reason your PC is recognising it as a 'primary' drive, have a look at this article it may help.
I would suggest that you identify positively the drive in the caddy, right click it and 'delete' it. This should remove the header and allow you to format it fully.

I've got a 250GB SATA Western Digital hard drive installed in my PC. I've never had any problems with it, but I want to buy another internal hard drive and a caddy so I can back up/clone the current one in case it fails. In the event of a failure, I'd remove the back-up drive from the caddy and install it in the PC.Here are my questions:1. Would you stick with Western Digital or are there better makes?2. Are caddies much of a muchness or would you recommend a particular make?3. Because of my plan to install the back-up drive in the PC in the event of a failure, would it have to have the same capacity (250GB) or could I buy something larger? Thanks.

Answer:Which internal hard drive and caddy?

Caddies are much of a muchness - IMHO aluminium ones are better from a heat point of view. I use caddies myself for both of my hard drives.BUT - for a backup drive I use an external USB unit - it's far simpler to plug and unplug when needed than a caddy.AND - I don't clone, I image4 - which is just as straightforward as cloning in the event of failure (though it takes longer), and uses significantly less drive space. It means I can get three full images (grandfather, father, son) on my backup drive - plus a daily data backup.AND - it makes no difference what make of drive you use. You can use a small lightweight 2.5" drive, which needs no external PSU if you like.

Answer:Hard Drive Dock/caddy

I assume from looking at the specs on the old caddy that your hard drive is a SATA.
The docking station, some people call them "toasters" supports SATA and has its own source of power so it should work fine.

Hello, I have a thinkpad T520 and I recently purchased the "ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III" from lenovo.com however it didn't come with a hard drive caddy like the internal drive has

This looks like the hard drive caddy it requires.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Thinkpad-X60-X60s-X61s-Hard-Drive-2-5-Caddy-Kit-YG35A-/320721833450?pt=PCC_D...

Without this the drive will rattle/move around in the bay adapter and not have a firm fit.

It seems very odd to me that lenovo didn't include this considering that it seems to be required. I paid $60 for that bay adapter and I see those drive caddies going for as low as $4 on ebay.

Does anyone know a place where I can get one that does not in anyway involve ebay or paypal? I can't seem to find them on lenovo's site other than having to buy one of their hard drives that seem to include one.

Answer:T520 : hard drive caddy

I also purchased the drive caddy for my T520 and had the same questions and comments you had. I think Lenovo expects that you purchase the HD from them with the caddy on it.

Picture of caddy and screws  I recently purchased a T30 without the HDD.  I bought a HDD and a Caddy - but am not sure how to put this Caddy on the HDD. I have one large screw and 4 HDD screws.

Answer:T30 HARD DRIVE COVER CADDY

It looks like the cage goes around the drive and attached with the 4 smaller screws. The large screw is used to hold in the plastic 'shield' and screws into the notebook case.

I love this computer, but I would like to use the hard drive caddy and there are no instructions.  I can't find any at the support site either.   Is there a manual somewhere?

Answer:I bought I used t61 with a hard drive caddy.

Hi

You can download the manual from here: click me!

Check chapter 1020, page #62 (from the manual, not the page number from your pdf viewer). You'll see the instructions to remove/insert the ultrabay device.

You can also check this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbVhzmLVtdQ  I'm not sure if it's a T61 for the principle is the same.

Hope this helps!

I have an Ideacentre Y700 Desktop and went to install an additional 3.5 inch hard drive but there was no caddy in the empty slot. I called Lenovo and was told they don't sell them. I've looked at a number of sites on the internet (Fry's, Amazon, Google Search) with no luck. Even called a few local computer stores, again with no luck. Any ideas as to where to go to get one would be greatly appreciated!

I've recently began having problems with a SATA - USB caddy to my Laptop. The caddy in question is one of these:

Page Not Responding

Sometimes I get "Delayed Write Errors" (in XP), other times the blue light will just go off and any activity will be stopped without any warning - when I take the USB cable out, the light comes back on and the caddy works again. I've asked the seller and he thinks its a problem with the HDD itself, with a possible "Bad Sector" - but I'm not convinced.

Any help?

I have a hotswap caddy in my Vista Dell PC and need a new hard drive to use in it.
So far I have only used 1 TB drives with it.
Is the physical size of a 3Tb drive the same as 1Tb or Tb drives, and will it go into the caddy?
Will a Dell XPS 435MT (i7 920)with Bios 1.1.2 running 64bit Vista SP2 OS be OK with a 3TB drive?
sorry, I can't find how old the PC is : maybe 3 years?
Thank you!.

Hello all, I am planning on installing an SSD in place of the standard 750 GB hard drive that came with my Y480. I still want to use it and have been looking into getting a caddy to replace the optical drive. However, I can't find any solutions that don't look like they're cheaply built or from a shady operation. Has anyone here found/bought/used and had a reliable experience with a hard drive caddy? Links appreciated. Thanks!   Actually, I am now looking at this product from NewmodeUS: Y480 HDD CaddyHas anyone had any dealings with this company?

I was wondering if there was a supported HDD caddy for the Aspire E5 575G 55NW? I did find this, but it doesn't seem to support my laptop: https://us-store.acer.com/42-gden7-sv1#_ga=1.233576222.125166628.1475259256.

Hello, If your laptop is equipped with the HDD socket (#C), you can use this kit without any problem. You have just to check it by removing the door.

I have just bought this brand new usb hard drive caddy enclosure from ebay. It was listed as a 1.8" IDE kit and also states on the box, I have a 20GB hard drive from an ipod which is what I got the kit for but it's not the right enclosure, ipod/mp3 player hard drives are 1.8" IDE.

This enclosure is square, the internal board has 4 screw holes (screws supplied with kit) and a black block connector attached for the gold IDE pins to insert into.

PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP ME OUT AND ALSO VIEW THE 3 JPEG PHOTOS ATTACHED TO THIS POST, 2 OF THE HARD DRIVE KIT AND 1 OF THE HARD DRIVE I THINK FITS.

Thanks.

I recently upgraded the HDD in my Aspire E5-551 to SSD to speed up the system.  So far, it works like a charm.  Bootup is crisp and quick and the system is running smoother than ever.  I would like to use the original HDD as a storage drive and I would like to mount it in the (currently empty) ODD bay using a standard caddy unit.  I purchased two different HDD caddies and both show the same problem.  The unit installs just fine and indicates that it is powered, but the second drive does not show up in This PC or in Disk Management.  I have no doubt that I likely missed a step or two in the install, so I'm curious if anyone has been able to do this with their systems and if anyone was able to find the workaround so the drive can be accessed.  Any info would be helpful.  Thanks. For the record, my unit is now Windows 10 with the most recent BIOS update (ver 1.12).

Hello, any information would help here,

My graphics card (built into motherboard) has blown and I had to buy a new PC. I would like to transfer some of the files from the old PC (not all files, just some) onto my new PC and was told I needed a hard drive caddy. My new PC is an ACER and my old PC was an Acer L100 with a 3.5 hard drive. I was wondering, what would be better for accessing/opening and transferring files from the old PC onto the new PC. Either
A. Using a USB to SATA adapter shown here :

IOMAX USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE Adapter Kit with Power: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

B. or using a hard drive caddy, shown here:

Dynamode 3.5 inch SATA and IDE Slim Line Storage Disk Caddie: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

Or do I just need a USB cable to connect to both computers.

Thanks if anyone can help,
Regards,
David

Answer:Hard drive caddy or USB to SATA adapter

You can hook your old drive to your motherboard, most likely. You may not have the room to fit one in, but most likely you have more SATA ports available that you can use. What is your new Acer model?
