I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I found some good tips for managing your laptop battery. Too late for mine, the battery will run it for only 16 minutes.

Answer:Prolong Your Laptop Battery Life

I've had mine almost 2 years in November. My notebook is always plugged in so I never have the battery in. I drain it down to about 30% and take it out, leave it in a drawer on my desk then once a month recharge it and run it back down to 30%. According to S.I.W it only has 4% wear so seam to work for me.

I have a laptop for the first time ever.I want to ensure I don't shorten the battery life by doing anything stupid. Some people seem to be saying you should never run with the power cord in and the battery inserted. This doesn't seem very logical to me and I thought I would ask some of the more experienced members of this Forum how I should carry on in order to maximise the life of the battery.I have already looked (via Google) and can't seem to get a definitive answer. This question is on the topic of longevity, not how to get the most out of one charge!I don't want to be having to buy a new battery in six months and apparently they are not covered by the warranty.

Answer:How to prolong life of Laptop Battery?

If you are not going to use it outside, Charge the battery Take it out of pc then put in a Plastic bag and put it at the back of your fridge at the bottom will do. This will help stop battery running down as fast charge about one every two months. Just run with Mains cable in.I have a Medion That Id did that its about 4 to 5 years old now and still going strong, PS my daughter now uses it but the battery is left in

I wounder how a should "use" my battery in my Lenovo g510 to prolong battery life? If I run the laptop without the battery will the computer be harmed if the electricy accidentically drops? And if this isn´t a problem what percentage should the battery have when not used in the Laptop? I maybe have the battery out for a week only. Or should I instead use the battery and set the battery to a certain level say 60 percent? Or another level? I just wounder how I should do since in some periods I use my laptop as a desktop.

Answer:G510 use laptop as desktop prolong battery life

hi Slugf4ther,

Thanks for Posting!

Battery degreadation includes Battery Charge and Discharge cycle.
If you have an active Power Outlet using the computer without the battery is ok, since you are actually not using the battery and this can prolong its life.

The only concern about this scenario

"If I run the laptop without the battery will the computer be harmed if the electricy accidentically drops?"

Is Unexpected shutdown. Unexpected Shutdown would cause issue on the Harddrive.
If running without the battery and a power outage occur. The computer will right away shutdown unlike using with a battery that can keep the computer ON and will let you shut it down properly.

What you could do is that If you are not that confident with the Power source. Run the system with the Battery and just set the Lenovo Energy Management  to Battery Conservation Mode, This lessen the battery damage while in use.

Hope this helps
Cheers!

All of us want to prolong our battery's life. But without question every battery has a natural course of aging. After used for a long time, the battery get weak. This is cannot be eliminated, but we can prolong this aging course by using suitable method.

Usually if you want to prolong your battery's life ,you must pay attention to 3 steps in using battery :

1.Store battery :
Put your batteries in a cool and dry place when you store it.
Do not charge your lithum batteries too full before storage.
After using the laptop battery ,please clean up the metal terminals with a soft dry clean cloth.
Before storage, you should confirm your is not fully depleted. If empty, charge for about 30 minutes . Usually a lithium-ion battery should be stored at about 40% state-of-charge.
The suitable storage temperature for batteries is around 15°C
Please notice this: weak batteries charge faster and remain on 'ready' indicator longer than strong ones. Also it only be used for a short time.So do not buy a used battery even if it is very cheap because used battery usually means weak battery.

2.Charge battery :
Most battery can be fully charged in about 3 hours so do not leave a battery in a charger for a long time.
When you prepare to charge your battery ,make sure the temperature is around the room temperature.
Especially need to pay attention is avoid over-charging and over-discharging.
Do not charged to higher voltages than its threshold voltage ,as it wo... Read more

Answer:How to prolong your battery's life

Where did you get this information? Some of it I'd agree with, others I don't. It also reads like a post you copy pasted into lots of places around the internet - however a quick googling didn't return anything.

1.Store battery :
Put your batteries in a cool and dry place when you store it.
Yes, that is generally good practice for lots of things.

Do not charge your lithum batteries too full before storage.
Ok, no prob here either, although saying that doing so can decrease overall capacity of the battery would have made it a better statement.

After using the laptop battery ,please clean up the metal terminals with a soft dry clean cloth.
So, I should take the battery out of my laptop every time I've used the laptop while not plugged in. This is not practical on some laptops and ultrabooks, nor does it seem necessary since I have never seen a corroded laptop battery.

Before storage, you should confirm your is not fully depleted. If empty, charge for about 30 minutes . Usually a lithium-ion battery should be stored at about 40% state-of-charge.
I've seen 50% thrown around, but I'll accept 40%.

The suitable storage temperature for batteries is around 15°C
Ok. Haven't heard this, but I suppose it makes sense.

Hey guys, Just bought a IdeaPad U410 a few days ago. I have tested the battery life, and it was pretty decent after uninstalling Smart Update (5 - 6 hours of casual use).  However, because of my previous experience of using Acer and Toshiba laptops, I worry that the battery life will shorten very quickly if I keep charging it. How do you guys deal with this problem? Is it possible to still get 5 - 6 hours of battery after, say, 1 year of owning this laptop?  (And I apologize if this is a stupid question, but I really don't know anything about computers, haha) Thanks!

Answer:How to prolong U410 battery life?

Please open energy management, go to battery settings and check optimize for lifespan. This will charge the laptop less than its capacity but the battery life would increase drastically.

Hi everyone,

I'll be grateful if anyone can help me in answering my question , How can I prolong my battery life ... I don't mean how many hours it can operate my laptop ,but I mean to last many years without change in its performance.

Some of my friends told me to remove the battery as long as I'm using the AC power, actually I heard a lot of talks about that and I really need an accurate answer.

Thank u

Answer:Satellite C660: How can I prolong notebook's battery life?

Hello

Do you use your notebook most of time on battery power supply?

95% of working time I use my notebook on AC power supply. To be honest i have never removed battery and battery running time is still almost 2 hours.
From time to time I use notebook on battery power supply. I leave notebook running until battery is almost empty. What else you want to do?

By the way: which notebook model do you have?

Hey, I really need help. I'm having problems with my laptop. It's a dell inspiron 7559 and was bought around January. Recently I have seen that the battery has no longer been as hot as it used to be when I first started using it. Along with the sleeve on the tip of the screen power adapter (below the part where the adapter lights up) has started to come off, exposing the wires. The battery has continually dropped down its percentage rate ever since I bought it, and it won't go back up. It is currently at 0% battery life and it says when you highlight over the battery icon ( plugged in, not charging). It also happens to show the BIO setup when I start the computer and shows that the batteries wattage and type cannot be determined. In the BIOS setup, the ac adapter type is unknown. The battery has not been through any harsh conditions along with the laptop. I have tried removing the battery, starting up the computer with the ac adapter (which is 130 watts), then adding the battery back, and ac adapter, then turning it on, but it had no effects. If I remove my ac adapter while my computer is on ,it instantly turns off. If someone can support me with this issue, it would be gladly appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds likely the charge circuit on the mainboard is damaged.  Contact Dell to have the mainboard replaced under warranty.

I'm new to the boards. Apologies if this is a tired topic, but I would appreciate feedback. I'm about to buy my first laptop, and am finding out that the one I'm trying out, a low-priced model (Toshiba Satelite M30X/M35X Series), lasts only about an hour and a half before needing to be recharged (if playing a dvd, it lasts only about an hour). Somehow I had guessed that batteries lasted longer in laptops. Am I nuts?
Two questions:

1. What is the normal life for a laptop battery?

2. And if I want to stay in the relatively low-price arena, what are the best laptops to consider in terms of battery life?

Thanks.

Answer:laptop battery life

1. I'd say between 45 minutes and 3+ hours. My Thinkpad lasts on average 2 1/2 - 3 hours doing office work.

2. Depends if you think Thinkpad is in the relatively low-price arena.

Answer:P4's and laptop battery life

Minimising use of CD/DVD drive and turning your screen brightness down would be more effective ways of extending the battery life. Disabling a feature that makes the CPU work more efficiently is not likely to help.

i have had this laptop for just over a year now, and recently i have noticed that the bottery only lasts about 20 mins as opposed to about 90-120 mins when i first bought it.ANy ideas on how to recover this problem or is the battery dying?Thnx

Answer:hp laptop battery - not much life

The battery is probably on it's way out.Recoverable, I'd say no but some people may know better. Batteries are considered consumables and generally you expect to have to get a new one every so often. I' think you've been unlucky it's only lasted a year but not alot you can do.You may be able to get a refurbished battery for cheaper then an HP original, you might find they'll buy your old one off you.click hereLot of others if you google.

Hi,We had some laptops at work brand new from Dell about a year ago, since then all but one of the batterys have completly died, they hold no charge at all and have to be ran off mains all the time. Some people within the workshop when using the laptops ran them on the charger all day whilst using them (could be up to 8 hours)and then at the end of shift they would be put on charge over night.Could this be the reason behind the batterys completly dying? Thanks in advanceEd

Answer:Laptop Battery Life

Possibly. I believe that you have to let them run out completely every now and then for them to charge properly.

I recently purchased a new Gericom Ego laptop with Centrino Technology which is supposed to have a battery life of over 6 hours when fully charged. This was one of the main reasons that I purchased this model.I now find that, after charging, the highest battery life available is 3 hours.I have tried using the battery until it is completely empty and then charging for a full 24 hours. I then hold the mouse over the battery icon and it say's that the battery is 100% charged with 3hrs lifetime in brackets.A phone call to the Gericom helpline brought the response that I would have to reduce the CPU speed to increase the battery life to 6 hours. Is this correct?. If so, how do I do it? Or was their claim of 6 hours battery life inaccurate? What is the point of having a fast processor if it is necessary to reduce the speed to maximise the life of the battery? Thanks Pat.

Answer:Laptop battery life.

A battery life of 6 hours is probably only possible if the machine is switched on but idle. If you made the point, probably in writing, at the time of purchase that the fundamental reason you bought it was the claim of 6 hours battery life, you may have a case for return. Aaahh marketing men!

I'm looking to buy my first laptop. I'm looking for a used one on Craigslist, and there is one Dell Lattitude and the owner claims that the laptop battery lasts 4 hours between recharges. However, never having used a laptop before, I'm not sure how to verify how many hours a battery has left before needing a recharge. When I go to look at, and possibly buy the laptop, I obviously can't sit there with it on for 4 hours to see how long the battery lasts...I'll only be there a few minutes to make sure the laptop works normally. So, is there a feature on the laptop that shows the life of the battery when its in use?

Answer:Battery Life on Laptop

Welcome to Major Geeks.
No-one can tell you how long a battery charge will last for YOU.

It all depends on whether you are a power user, or just use your laptop to play Freecell, for example.

You might try googling to the DELL website, for the particular make and model, and check out the specifications that should include average battery life (or some similar phrase).

I use my laptop mostly on AC power, anyway, and have removed the battery entirely, except when I visit other people I am trying to assist with their PC problems. Bazza

Note the battery is "Primaryy Battery - 9-cell, 80 Whr Li-ion primary battery" and also i havent got a secondary battery, should i get one?

Answer:Laptop Battery Life

3 Hours is probably about right. The battery monitor is just an indicator of the battery life. When you charge it up fully from new it is not uncommon for it to say something ridiculous. As it calibrates itself it will become more accurate. It`s rather like filling a car up with petrol, the guauge says full but as you drive it falls steadily and that last quarter tank disappears in about 15 miles!!Obviously battery life depends on what you do on the computer. If you watch a DVD for example it will drain much quicker than if you`re just doing basic word processing.

Is it damaging to a rechargeable Li-ion battery to leave it connected to the power supply for long periods of time?

Answer:Laptop battery life

No. Lithium ion batteries do not have the 'memory effect' that old sytle batteries have. The lifespan of a lithium ion battery is only about 1.5 to 2 years though.

Best practice is to only have it plugged in when using it, but as stated earlier supposedly li-ion batteries don't suffer from the memory effect.

Hi!

I´m trying to figure out how to make my laptop LiIon battery last longer. I´ve been searching the internet, but the information is very varied. Some say it´s best NOT to discharge the battery completely, others say I should use the 40%-80% range, and again others say I should charge and discharge the battery completely on regular basis. Why are there so many different suggestions?

Answer:Laptop battery life

What you really ought to consider is a multi-cell battery for a laptop.
Some are only three cell, others are four or six sells. When I switched to a 9-cell battery for My Thinkpad T-60, my world changed for the better.
As for your question, most actual tests show it is best to totally discharge the battery periodically, then recharge it. Otherwise you run into problems of battery "memory" where it has a difficult time creating a full charge after a period of partial charges.

Answer:Extending battery life on my laptop

What do you mean by extend battery life - time between charges or lifespan of the battery itself ?

If the former, then you could try turning down the screen brightness a little, and turning off the wi-fi except when you need it. If it is the latter, then the advice I got from one battery supplier was to charge the battery to between 95 and 100% of capacity then run the laptop on the battery only until it was down to 10-15% capacity before plugging the charger in again.

A friend of mine recently purchase an Athlon 2.8+ based laptop in February this year& she is quite concerned about the limited battery life. At best the battery fades in 45 mins at worst less than 25 mins. I know the battery was conditioned fro new as I installed software etc & I did a full charge then total discharge then a full charge then another full discharge as instructed by Novatech. As I have limited dealings with laptops I am interested what could be deemed a reasonable battery life between charges using the machine for surfing the net for example. I am going to ring Novatech up for her today & see what can be done.

Answer:Laptop Battery Life Between Charges

Some of the PC Advisor laptop reviews indicate that battery life is 2 to 3 hours or more under their standard test conditions. Not sure how this relates to your personal use, but 45 minutes sounds much too little for a new battery.

If I disable any action in Windows XP when a critical battery alarm occurs so that it does not hibernate, the battery lasts for over an extra hour longer before it powers down. Hey everyone, I've been using my Asus G55VW for just over a year now. It's been having a maximum of 3 hours of battery life since I got it. Once, about 4 months ago, the battery life dropped and it shut down completely at 30% battery left with no warning at all. I fixed that issue by creating a battery calibration power option and it worked and I got the battery back to normal.

About a week ago, I turned on the laptop the laptop and noticed I had 1 hour and 30min battery life at 97%. I did fully charge it the night before and pulled out the adapter. So i get only 1.5 hours battery life now and it used to still function like normal and gave me battery low warnings. A few days ago, it stopped giving me warnings all-together and shuts down at 15%.

I tried calibrating but it the method I used before did not work. Is it possible the battery is on it's last legs?

Answer:Laptop battery life drop

Yes, I suspect the battery is at fault

Battery life is quite poor, if they are kept plugged in and at 100% charging can shorten life - often now you have power management that does not re-charge batteries to 100%

Hello! Right now you will find out how to improve your laptops battery life! This can be done with nearly every laptop!

FIRST!!!!
Number one! You should go under your battery settings on the task-bar (If you're running windows xp and up, I believe) and make sure you select power saver mode.
-This will lower your computers abilities and standards
-This will lower your computer screen brightness (unless you change it)
-This will also make your computer slower but it will save you battery life!

SECOND!!!!
Number two! You should turn your computer on airplane mode (If your computer can do that) because most laptops automatically search for open and/or closed networks to connect to, and its just easier on the laptop, it being it doesn't search over and over again...

THIRD!!!!
Number three! IF YOU ARE TRYING TO SAVE BATTERY LIFE, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BACK-LIT KEYBOARD OFF (If your laptop has that installed) AND YOU SHOULD ALWAYS ONLY HAVE TWO LOW POWER CONSUMING APPS OPEN AT ONCE MAX.(This will help out a lot)AND LASTLY, SET YOUR SCREEN TO A LOWER BRIGHTNESS, THIS WILL HELP YOU A LOT!!!

Hello,

I bought a new HP computer (model dv2828ca) and for some reason on Vista it shows the % of how full the battery is, but it doesn't tell me how much time I have left on the battery.

I have like 4 battery's from older HP laptops, and all with different life expectancies. I would like to know, when I put each battery in my laptop how much time I have left until my laptop is out of battery.

I tried installing a Vista widget which shows the battery % and it was advertised to also show how much time left until the batter is dead, but sadly it only showed the % and not the time left. I also hate widgets, but if it's my only option then can someone send me one that works? If not, can someone please show me a better/good way to see how much battery time is left?

Thanks!

Answer:Laptop battery life not showing

All of my laptops never showed time just the % of charge.

Ok, I have a two-year old HP G5000 series laptop with Vista. I always have it on AC because it has such rubbish battery life, but I recently took it into the garden and downloaded 2 battery meters from the net. After 6 minutes they both said 7 percent remaining. It's been on charge for about half an hour and the charge is apparently 8 percent now... I knew it was worn, but not that worn! I can't use the standard Vista battery meter because it's greyed out under the Notification Area tab. It says it has about 7 mWh out of 90 mWh capacity, just checked... oh dear... If that is pretty bad, then is it possible to get a replacement from HP, or get an alien battery?

hope u all help me.

Answer:How to use laptop for increasing battery life?

After a couple year's use you should completely discharge and recharge it once a month.
Don't keep the charger plugged in all the time but use battery power and charge it when it's low.

Hi,I have another unrelated question. What is a good practice to prolong the battery life of my laptop? Should I use my laptop until its batteries are completely discharged and then charge it to full (and similar cycles)? What do you guys do to preserve the battery life?

Answer:Prolonging battery life of a new laptop

welcome to the community.

Li-ion batteries don't like being deep-cycled too often, nor is it too good to be continuously topping them up. here's alink for you: http://batteryuniversity.com/ with lots of good info.

personally, i set a low charging threshold in Power Manager of 35-40% and then let it fully recharge. doing this, the 9-cell battery in my t60p still has more than 85% of it's design capacity, giving 2-3 hours of use, after 4+ years and 225+ cycles.

I've had this laptop for under 3 years, and in the last 6 months the battery has gone from charging to 100% to very quickly 0%. The AC adaptor still works fine, so now my laptop is basically a desktop. If the unit is unplugged for even a moment it shuts down. I am well beyond the 1 year warranty period that HP places on their batteries (shocking that anyone would think 1 year an appropriate length of time for a laptop battery to last). I was expecting the battery to last longer, my previous laptop's battery is still working after 8+ years. While I probably use the laptop a little more than the average user, I have read a number of posts with "laptop battery dead" in the subject but I can't find anything to let me know the life-cycle, and if my expectations are unrealistic.

Till now, I have always had laptops where I could remove the battery completely. Every time I know I am going to be using my laptop as a "desktop replacement", when I know my laptop is going to stay stationary at my desk for long periods of time, I have always removed the battery and had my charger plugged in.
I just got a Precision 5510, and it has an internal battery. How do I maximize the life of it? I keep it at a desk most of the time, and occasionally use it on the flight, at airports etc where I truly use it as a laptop. Is it ok to keep it plugged in and at 100% all the time? Should I keep cycling it between 80% and 20% constantly?
Anyone have any recommendations for how I should be handling the battery? I am basically worried about it losing its capacity as a result of a higher temperature from constantly keeping it charged and at 100%.

So I was reading some articles online about prolonging lithium ion battery life. I recently got a new battery because my old one didn't work anymore..the second I'd unplug the power cord, the laptop would shut off because the battery was no longer good. So what can I do best to prolong the battery life?

I don't use my laptop for many "mobile" purposes and usually just keep it plugged into the AC cord on my desk I'd say 90% of the time. So should I occasionaly run just on battery power to a partial discharge and then fully charge it? I've read that full discharges are not good for LI batters, but should be done about once a month. So I guess my main question is since I don't use my laptop away from an outlet that much, what should I do? Remove the battery completely? Thanks for your input

Answer:Prolonging laptop battery life

Modern laptops have "smart chargers" that properly maintain the battery.

I never bother with removing or cycling the battery, my present one is 2 years old and still runs fine (on the rare occasion it gets used).

My opinion is that cycling the battery may add a very small percentage of life, but unless you know exactly what the optimum cycling is for that exact battery construction, you may also subtract a small percentage of life. But we will never know what the optimum for that construction is...

I work on the theory of leaving it alone and letting tha laptop take care of it. Thats what its designed for.

If you feel the need, everything you never needed to know on rechargeable batteries is here:

Hi all,I had this bad experience of this wide problem in laptops, battery failure. It happens almost just after your warranty expires many will agree, funny & true..battery stops charging, shows less than 100% or 0% charge no matter how you try to charge it..etc. Also many complain that the battery shows only remaining charge time, and not the time remaining (read 9th tip below).Though Mark, Andy, vkyr, nonny, jhem, bill, myles and other admin guys are here to help on this forum, I thought of writing this based on my own experience of these batteries till date..I had compiled a few tips and information for dummies about the use of battery here which might help you to extend battery life:NOTE to moderatos--please check / modify / add / edit in the following if you find any wrong information.NOTE to all -- These tips in no way will harm your system, except the 9th tip and also if you remove battery without shutting down laptop All are welcome to add any new tips or corrections.1. Never discharge battery to 0%. Always, ALWAYS let battery discharge to a lower limit of up to about 5 to 10%.2. To run it or not on AC supply without battery If you use laptop most of the time at home or a place where there is a continuous (= uninterrupted) power supply, then simply remove battery from laptop and run laptop on AC power. Answer:HOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR LAPTOP'S BATTERY LIFE

I definitely agree with #2, not just for laptop power but also for all your electronics. Surge protectors are very inexpensive and sometimes offer equipment protection guarantees if you register your surge protector. I have lost many electronics because the power adapter had a short and fried the equipment. Every time you vacuum or every time your refrigerator motor turns on it causes spikes in power demand, and a surge protector is definitely something your should have connected at all times.

Hi,

Currently I am having acer laptop 4738Z model that I purchased last year in the month of February.

I use it on ac power more often that in battery mode.

On an average, I work on laptop for about 5 hours in ac power mode and merely 1 hour on battery mode.

Please tell me the average lifetime of the battery that I can have from this kind of usage.

Answer:average battery life of laptop

Laptop batteries do usually drain fairly fast, especially if you're doing a lot on them. Though 1 hour is pretty short.

When your laptop is disconnected from AC adapter, do you turn on Power Saving Mode?

Do you turn your brightness down?

Do you just browse the web/perform simple tasks that aren't power hungry?

Also, whenever you are running your laptop from the AC adapter, take out the battery. Leaving the battery in while it's plugged in to the charger long-term can cause your battery to die out faster than it should.

Samsung laptops have a piece of software called 'Batter life extender'.
It's used when the laptop is mostly used via it's adapter. Unlike most on the web this software is designed to help extend the whole life of the batter not just the time between charges.
It does this by only charging the batter to about 80%.
Anyone know of a similar (free ?) bit of software that will work on a Medion laptop running Vista Hone Premium ?

Answer:Laptop running hot & shorter battery life

Windows 7 is proven to run better and more efficient then any other OS. You might have to change some advanced power setting in the Control Panel. Thats what I had to do. Some things you can do would be to change you cooling to passavie on battery and active on plug in. Also lower you CPU processing rate to about 85. That should cool things down a bunch. If you are not sure on how to do this just post back and i'll can do a walk through with you.

Take your pick in Taskmanager.Windows module installer was the worst for me.Also Windows Updates and the Store. But there are others. I set Windows Updates to manual which helped.
Then of course you have one of Windows defenders set to automatic and running and the other one set to manual but not running. managed to get the automatic one to stop running but had to use msconfig for that.
Not sure why they still run crap programs like that.
Windows updates are set to automatic with an automatic download and install which is bound to cause problems eventually.

I have a Toshiba laptop (Satellite L335D-S7825) which has a #PA3536U-1BRS Li-ion battery pack (DC10.8V/10.8V -- 4000mAh). At full charge I'm lucky to get two hours. I see that many new batteries are rated up to as much as eight hours or more.

Questions:

Is it even possible to buy such a long-life battery for my Toshiba, or am I stuck with a two-hour machine? I found some 4600mAh batteries that should fit my laptop, but would they provide more than two hours of usage? Can I find one rated higher than 4600mAh? Do Li-ion batteries have the longest life, or is there a new technology that has surpassed it? If so, would my laptop take anything other than Li-ion?

I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who can offer me sound advice.

Hi guys,

I am in search of a new mid-range (£400-£600) laptop, which will be used primarily for Word processing, email and Web browsing - so nothing too fancy.

However, the most important aspect is the battery..

At the moment I have a Compaq and the battery life is awful. Previously, I had a Dell and it could stay off charge for much longer.

So please, either give me the name/model of a very good/long lasting laptop battery that I can look out for, or recommend me a laptop that has good battery life.

Thanks guys, really appreciate it.

As always.!

Answer:Mid-range business laptop (Best battery life?)

They will all suck after time, just make sure you're not running a battery down to dead and then charge it. Charge it before you need to, so to speak.

Honestly, I don't think any "stock" manufacturer battery will be extremely different than the other.

There are three settings for your battery life extension 1) Balance 2) Power save 3) high performance the lower numbers give you a longer battery life with the same performance just double click on your battery icon bottom right of screen and it should tell you what the power setting are and you can change the settings from thereas well, power saver setting should extend your battery life by about 20mins but that is the limit of the equium A200.

I recently found out my laptop's battery is going defunct. The laptop is about 3.5 years old or thereabouts. I never really used it on the battery much except just to move it from here to there or in case of a power out. So the battery never got much use. But it was always plugged in.
But now I find that it only powers the laptop for about 10 minutes before is warns that it is low, then shuts me down. This is supposed to be a 2.5 or 3 hour battery.
Plus it's a Lithiom ion and those are not supposed to have the "memory effect" like nickel metal hydrid or whatever. Right?

So it goes from 100% full to 5% in a manner of minutes.

So like, what can I do to bring some life back into this thing? Or is it toast?

I'm afraid this is a really dumb question, but I'm not sure of the answer. For years I've dimmed the screen on my laptop, assuming that I was saving batter power. But lately I've been wondering. Regular fluorescent lights can't be dimmed, so maybe the light behind my lcd can't be. Maybe I'm just darkening pixels when I decrease brightness. For all I know that may take even more power. Does anyone know?

Answer:Dim Laptop Screen To Conserve Battery Life?

davec1000,Yes dimming a laptop screen does conserve battery power. But the reduced visibility and eye strain may not be worth it. Only you can decide that. Here's a link to a Microsoft at Work article on battery conservation strategies. hthBe (Energizer Bunny) Safe Da Bleepin AniMod, Animal

I recently purchased an x60 tablet without the ultrabase (dvd portion) and want to install vista. I'm wondering if anyone have experience with network installs or using external usb hard drive to boot vista. Also for laptop users, how is the vista battery life? I'm reading mixed findings all over the net but nothing solid.

I just want to know whether plugging in the laptop even after it is fully charged decrease the life of battery. And what is recommended while using laptop when there is availability of external power supply. And is there any battery maintenance criteria available for using laptops in such situations?

Answer:Does Plugging in the Laptop for home use decrease the life of the battery?

AFAIK, all today's notebook battery chargers prevent the battery overcharge, so you don't have to worry about it. In general, li-ion battery life depends on several factors: temperature (lower temperature - longer life), charge percent (I've read in many sources that the optimal value is ~45-50%), cycle count (max capacity decreases with each cycle). Also, there's a lot of information on this topic in the internet, if you want to know more.

I'll be making 2 posts, first asking about battery, second asking about laptops.

Ok first off my battery question. I had a laptop for like 2 years which I hardly used due to it being too large to be practical to carry around wherever and because it ran slow (2g ram but had vista)

So anyway lately I been experimenting a lot with networking and having couple hours idle time before work (car broken and only ride i can get).

I did a search, in this forum among other sources to see the best means I could get to extending my battery life, here's what i've come up with.

-Fully charge battery only when necessary, the less charged the longer it lasts.
-Keep it cool as reasonable possible.
-When plugged in and battery charged remove either battery or plug.

As I'll be using this often out of home, keeping it as fully charged as possible is necessary as I cannot expect to carry the cables to keep it plugged in wherever. I was wondering though if there is any other means I could go by in extending battery life?

I set the computer under power saver (hp pavilion dv9000), and muted my speakers in hopes of helping extend its life during my out trips. Would I be correct to also assume use of dvd, usb devices, and wifi would too work to drain battery faster?

Is there any other means I could actively seek while using said laptop, not just with keeping the battery as well as possible, to reduce the speed of power drainage?

This laptop is also using Vista if ther... Read more

I've been looking around for laptops with longer battery life.

Other than the eee 1000h, which has roughly 6 hours, the cheapest laptop I can find over 5 is the Thinkpad X series, which is on "sale" for around $1100 on their site.

Does anyone know of a laptop that is both cheap and has long battery life?

Answer:Laptop with long battery life that isn't outrageously expensive

If you don't mind going second hand you can find a Toshiba Portege R100 or R200 for $500-600 on ebay. With the secondary battery you're looking at around 6 hours of battery life.

Hi! I purchased my laptop around 3 to 4 months ago via my school. Initially, the laptop was able to live up to its claims of a "long battery life" but within 2 months, the battery life had decreased from 10 hours to 2-3 hours. Moreover, the laptop seems to be very laggy, despite the fact that the majority of my files are stored in Dropbox and I rarely have anything more than a few google chrome tabs open (and occasionally a microsoft word document open). Are there ways to solve this? Should I purchase a new battery?

Hi All!

I just got a new laptop.

I went through the suggested 'break-in' cycle with the battery; that is, letting it drain, charging, letting it drain, etc.

So the question is this: Does running the laptop on AC power shorten the life of the battery? This may sound stupid, but I have other battery-run devices that suggest this is a bad idea.

What are best practices for optimizing battery life?
And what can I reasonably expect the life of the battery to be?

TIA,
Richard

Answer:Laptop - Total Noob - Battery Life Question

If this article is anything to go by it appears that using mains power with the battery still connected can cause damage to the battery.

Hi,

I've been using windows 7 for about a week on my Fujitsu A-6110 laptop.
Windows 7 (7057 32bit)
Fujitsu A-6110
Core-2-du0 1.5 GHZ
2.5 GB Ram

When I had windows vista home installed I could run this laptop on "power-saver" mode for 3+ hours, when I bought it a year ago maybe 4 hrs on power-saver mode. At this setting I have the laptop on the lowest brightness level.

Now with Windows 7 installed my battery lasts about 1.5 hrs on powersaver mode with the brightness turned all the way down. Its been 45 minutes now and it is at 52%.
Is there some kind of Fujitsu battery power software I need to correct this ?

Thanks -Brian

The Engineering Windows 7 blog mentioned about a new feature of Windows 7. It is capable of telling you that how much life is remaining in your laptop?s battery. Now, there is no need to use any other 3rd party useless software to do so. It will also suggest you when to replace for a new battery.
Windows 7 makes use of a feature of modern laptop batteries which have circuitry and firmware that can report to Windows the overall health of the battery. This is reported in absolute terms as Watt-hours (W-hr) power capacity. Windows 7 then does a simple calculation to determine a percentage of degradation from the original design capacity. In Windows 7 we set a threshold of 60% degradation (that is the battery is performing at 40% of its designed capacity) and in reading this Windows 7 reports the status to you. At this point, for example, a battery that originally delivered 5 hours of charge now delivers, on average, approximately 2 hours of charge. The Windows 7 the notification is a battery meter icon and notification with a message ?Consider replacing your battery?. This notification is new to Windows 7 and not available in Windows Vista or Windows XP.

Answer:Windows 7 Notifies users about there Laptop’s battery life

It seems that after upgrading to Windows 7, many Windows 7 users used to get a warning message about needing to replace their laptop batteries, inspite of having new batteries.

Hi All,

I am having a problem with my Acer aspire s3 ultrabook (i7 2637 4GB ram running windows 7 home premium 64 bit).

The fan is on all the time, really loud and noisy, and the laptop is usually heating up too rapidly, and the battery life is less than 1 hour on power saving mode!! I don't know how it became this way, but I think that I once downloaded the windows 8 preview, installed it, but nothing happened, and I could not detect it on the control panel or in my hard-drive, it just disappeared, and my laptop has not been well eversince. I am not sure If I want to restore it or if I have a restoration point before the problem, but I have important software I do not want to lose. Is there any solution for that?

Thanks

Answer:laptop heating, fan loud, battery life short in windows 7

dalhoomist,
Welcome to SF. Have you ever opened the bottom up to change ram or your HDD? I would open it up and see how much that exposes the guts and especially the fan which I would take a very close look at and then clean it with air and a damp q-tip. Air flow is critical and these fans get dirty and even clumps of dust can break off and slow if not block the flow of air.

Answer:Looking for a laptop with a good balance of battery life, power, and portability

Hoping not to bring the wrath of the God's down on my head i am wondering if you have considered an Apple laptop for your purposes. While i cannot provide specifics as to all their product line as to which of your desired parameters would be able to be realized from their products. I am aware of the certain comments re the desirability of their computers for "better" handling of video editing functions than PC's. Given your price definition i would think you could get something pretty good in the Apple stable for that price. However here is a link to a site that may give you more data from which to make an informed decision.http://blog.laptopmag.com/5-questions-to-answer-before-you-buy-a-laptopFrom many of your previous postings it is quite apparent that you are well above the basic level of computer knowledge and skill. However in case this is something you may not have thought of i submit the idea for your consideration.truenorth

yrI have always been big fan of IBM, infact when Lenovo was launched I very enthusiastically recommended it to everyone. Finally when I could afford my first laptop I didn't hesitate to buy a Lenovo product it was a N100 notebook model 0768-A39.I purchased it in March 2007. However my joy died soon, it died with the battery. Though I would not say that battery backup was unsatisfactory, in fact I oulasted many of my colleagues at work; But in December 2007 just 9 months after purchase, the battery just died one day, no backup none at all. With erratic power supply being the hallmark of the region I live in (Kashmir) I couldnt work at all. Called lenovo support and they said I would get a battery after 1 month and that too at a service centre a days journey by road from my location  and they insisted that I would have to bring my laptop along too.Anyways, finally after waiting for a month I got a call from the service center that my battery had come, but they gave me 48 hours to report or they will have to send it back. You can imagine travelling from my place the next day to the service centre (at Jammu) reaching at 6 in the evening and running to the center with my laptop. They were closing so asked me to come the next morning. I did and my battery was replacd in 2 minutes and I could leave.I returined home tired yet relieved that my laptop was perfect now. The centre people had told me that it was a fluke that lenovo batteries of this lot suffered from and the new batter... Read more

I have changed two batteries since I purchased my Laptop. I bought it 15 months back.
So, I have been going through the things that make my laptop batteries' life short.
After Reading many articles about batteries, I have made some inferences:
1) Internal stress inside the battery will be at peak, when it is Fully charged. Actually keeping it plugged in for long time causes, temperature increase inside the battery and life is reduced.
2) Never bring the battery to discharge fully or below 30%.
3) Plug out the battery when gaming. Keep the battery exposed to lesser than 40 degree celcius.
4) Discharging the battery at higher rate reduce battery life.

SO, Here is what i am doing. I pull out battery while gaming. I never charge more than 85%.
Also need some suggestions from you to increase the battery life.

A possible cause is purchasing "cheap" batteries, which may or may not apply in your case; they can also be a source of extreme overheating which can cause damage to internal parts. The last part is just an FYI.

Not a biggie for me as I'm somewhat skeptical of anything automatic MS comes out with. But I am curious as to why my system is not supported by MS Fix.
