Recover pics from harddrive or DVD

Question: Recover pics from harddrive or DVD

if this is posted in the wrong forum, then please move it to the right place...

My problem is that I ran the recovery CDs (for XP) on my harddrive, believing that I had all data securely backed up. Big mistake. It turns out that I cannot read/find the files (pics) on the DVD (my backup). Some files and folders have been copied onto the DVD correctly, but other files appear to be missing and in many cases entire folders are labelled "Folder is Empty" when trying to open them. On one of my DVDs containing the backup, the info provided in "my computer" says that it contains 4.22GB data, but when going onto the DVD itself and adding together all the files and folders, then it adds up to no more than 3GB. It clearly seems like data has been copied, but somehow I cannot see it (same result on 2 different computers).

What could be the problem? Is there an easy way to recover my files on the DVD?

If not, how much of a chance would I have when it comes to recover the files from the harddrive on which I have run the recovery CDs? After running the recovery CDs, nothing has been written or deleted onto the harddrive. The harddrive is 80GB and the pic files I'd like to recover are no more than 1-2GB in total, so there should be a good chance that the new Windows+applications is not going to sit on top of my files.

Apart from an estimate on how much of my files on the harddrive I can hope to recover, can I expect my recovered files be complete, i.e not partially corrupted?

Preferred Solution: Recover pics from harddrive or DVD

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Question: Recover Pics

My external hard drive broke. I get nothing on it. I had my pics on there of course. The pics still show up in MS Digital Library folders view as thumbnails. I can't copy, print, move, etc. Is there any way to recover these pics? They used to be on my internal hard drive until I moved them to the external one. I have Windows XP & MS Digital Image Standard 2006.

Answer:Recover Pics

Oops! You should really have "copied" them to the external drive and left the originals intact. That way, whichever drive failed first, you would have backup copies of them on the other drive. If you didn't want them on your internal drive, then you should have put them on two external drives, not just one.

Provided the system is still able to detect the external drive (ie it hasn't failed completely) you may be able to retrieve the pics with recovery software. These ones are free: Free data Recovery Software Roundup! (All freeware data recovery tools.)

Help I am in a panic What happened I took pics of my Niece's Wedding and transfered them to my pc after the transfer it wanted to know if I wanted to delete the files off the memory card and I clicked yes. Now my Hard drive broke and now I am knee deep in s**t is there a way to recover the pics off the memory card (is there a smiley of someone on their knee's praying)

Answer:Is there a way to recover my pics

Yes - you can recover the pics from the memory card as long as nothing has been written to it since the pics were erased. Here's a list of some free recovery programs available right here at Major Geeks: (aimed at recovery from media cards)
Many more programs can be found in the Major Geeks Data Recovery section and in the Drive Utilities section:

I have a sony digital camera, a sony USB port, and the Microsoft Picture It! program to view and edit my pics. I was using my mouse to lasso 4 pics and to open them using the Microsoft Picture It! and a pop up came up. I clicked the wrong thing and they are gone, I mean gone. I don't even know what the pop up said. It was a knee jerk respone to say OK, or yes to the pop up. I must have hit the delete button instead of the "open" button. Ah! Are the pics retreivable. I looked at my desktop Recycle Bin, but they are not there. Just thought I'd try. Is there a trash file within my MS Picture It? I am so new to all this that I can't find it, if it exists. Anyone know a program that can help me retrieve the photos? Please help if you can. Thanks

Hey all.

Call me a noob, I know. haha.

But I bought Windows 7 a few months back and installed to one of my harddrives.
It has windows xp on one of the drives and the other has 7.

This is what I wanted HOWEVER!. Windows 7 is not letting me have access to my camera folder I had hundreds and hundreds of pics in. Says I do not have authorization to view them.
Is there something I can do to bypass this?
Some photos are ok to view but others are not accessible.

Any ideas would be great.. Thanks

Answer:Cant access certain pics from harddrive since install of windows 7

Are you talking about a folder on the other hard drive (that has XP)?

Your options are to 'take ownership' of the folder, which in the process will botch your XP account's ownership of the folder.

Or on the XP machine, you can go into folder options and uncheck 'use simple file sharing'. You may also have to remove the password on the account.

First thanks for responding, and to let you know I am Not computer savy. Heres the story...I got an virus that redirected me every time I did a search. I tried to get rid of it by doing a norton search and no luck, every two minutes I would get a message saying that the computer was under attack. I then got a message saying to download windows vista service pac two and install it.I though well maybe this will help. At that point after the install my computer wouldn't start and the only way to start it was to reformat the drive. Now that it is formatted, how do I get , or can I get the pictures back. The pictures that I need are the ones from this Christmas, the ones I didn't back up. If there is a program out there that will help, will it allow me to view the pictures before I buy the program. thanks for all the help.

How much are you willing to spend?

Some data recovery companies charge only if they recover data. Some have other pricing systems.

It would be best for your data if you did not use your computer. Remove the hard disk drive. Connect it to a 2nd computer.
This program is free to use. They charge you if the files you want are found.

Download the trial version and recover your files. You can preview your data to be sure it actually works. If you like the results you do not need run the program again. Purchase the license key and enter it into the open program. Then copy everything you need!Click to expand...

My question is an external harddrive like my book
you plug it into a usb port on your computer and I no you can then download pictures and music to that drive. my question is can you also load games to that drive and then unplug it and go to another computer and plug it into that usb port and be able to listen to the music and play the games?

My daughter wants to save pics and music to her new external drive but also some of the games she likes, then she wants to be able to unplug it from our computer and go 50 miles to her dads computer and be able to plug the external drive into his computer and be able to listen to the music and be able to play the games, can she do that?

I am pretty sure she will have to actually download the games to the new external drive itself but then will they play on another computer from the external drive without having to install them on the other computer that she chooses to plug into? hope this makes sense, basically trying to find out if she loads the games and music to the external drive can she then plug into any other computer and play the games without have to do anything but bring them up from the external drive?

I recently ruined my lumia 1020 on a trip to the Philippines. Salt water got into it and it shorted out. Is there anyway to recover the pics/video that are saved? I already tried usb connection. Can I just swap the on board memory (not sure where it is) to another 1020(I have 2 more). Any thoughts?

Answer:Recover Pics from Water Damaged 1020

I imagine trying to switch out chips on the board to be a very risky and difficult procedure for even qualified professionals.
Especially since salt is very destructive.
Honestly, the best way, and perhaps the only remotely easy way to deal with this is to make sure you don't have to be in this situation ever again. Backups!
if your phone was ever connected to Wi-Fu, surely they were backed up to OneDrive? (or whatever cloud service you used)
Unless you turned them off...

Hello, this is my first post so please bear with me. I'm trying to save pics from an infected laptop to cdrom or thumbdrive. The pc won't boot from an xp cdrom boot disk. It will boot in safe mode. It won't system restore to an earlier working point either. The pc usually freezes up when booting normally or displays fatal error screens if it actually boots normally. When trying to use an xp boot disk, it will not see it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:trying to recover pics from a laptop that-will only boot in safe mode

Remove the hd from the laptop and attach it by an IDE to USB adapter to another computer. Move the files from the now seen laptop on the USB port to a thumbdrive or perhaps put the files on the host computer then burn the pics to a CD.
example of an adapter:

You have to be sure that is says Supports IDE/2.5" & 3.5" because a laptop hd is 2.5" and a desktop is 3.5". So if you buy an adapter that only supports 3.5" drives, you won't be able to connect the laptop hard drive to another computer.

I have lost count of the number of times that I have advised people to use several smaller memory cards rather than one large one (if one card gets damaged then you don't lose everything).

However I fell to the temptation of a cheap larger card and sure enough lost all of my pic's - A good guess would be that I accidentally reformated it.

I have tried several recovery prog's, but the problem seems to be that they wont recognise my camera as a drive. Windows xp sees the drive, yet these prog's don't. Can anyone offer advice please ?

Hi guys and gals.  A friend asked me to retrieve some pictures from his Dell computer which won't boot. I thought I could slave the harddrive to my pc and save the pictures but the Western Digital connection is not the same as what's on my pc. Is there an adapter available for this type of harddrive? When I boot the computer I get a black screen saying that there is a hardware or software problem and recommends I do a "Launch Setup Repair". I hit enter and it just comes back to the same message. I can choose "start Windows Normally" but it just goes to a black screen. I ran a diagnostic on the harddrive and it passed. I also ran a Memtest86 on the RAM which also passed the test. I have a Recovery Disk but I'm more concerned with saving the pictures first. Any ideas?

I defraged my Windows ME partition, and all ok until I tried to load Mandrake Linux, which had be corrupted by the defrag. I then attempted to re install Linux, but it took the whole drive (39G). so I did not have Windows. After a great deal of trouble attempting to reformat drive using Fdisk, I resorted again to the recover CD, which announced that the Media in drive C was not recognised. But in frustration I pressed escape and return a number of time and the drive was re formatted, but only approx 29G. I have now a working Windows system but not enough room on the partition to fully load Linux. Somewhere on the Drive there is about 9G unacconted for, which neither windows or linux appear to recognise. Fdisk displays :partition status type vollabel mb system usage 1 EXT DOS %C: 2 A PRI DOS HPPavilion30602Mb 80%System FAT32Whilst I understand what is displayed none of the Fdisk functions will recover the lost 9Mb, Can any one help, Ido not want to re format the whole drive again. but would like to run linux in the lost partition.

My cousin's laptop recently went to crap. The windows system startup folder got corrupted. Anyway, I pulled the harddrive and plugged it into my desktop to pull off her personal files (System restore/repair with CD did Not work)
Anyway, I got it to show up fine on my machine, but every single folder, subfolder, and file requires me to go through the arduous process of about 7-10 clicks to 'acquire the security permissions'
Since there are a good 4-600 photos alone, and numerous folders and subfolders, this obviously is not a very efficient method.
After poking around some, it seems like running the takeown commands through the disk would solve this I correct in assuming that or do I need to run down a different avenue?

My old laptop's motherboard died, probably as a result of overheating.  The harddrive is RAID 0; two drives stacked on top of each other.  I've had some friends look at it, and they recommended a 2.5" PATA/IDE enclosure kit.  I found this one at tigerdirect - Sabrent 2.5" USB 2.0 to IDE/PATA Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure.  Will I still be able to recover the data one drive at a time, even though it is RAID 0?  I also looked into IDE cable adaptors, but again, the IDE cable adaptors I've found only connect to one harddrive at a time.  Thank your for any help you can give me.

Hi guys,
well heres the story: My sister brought me a computer to fix for her friend who owns a restaurant. So all i did was an easy fix formatted the hard drive and installed windows. Well i brought it back to the owner and she is very sad that i have deleted all the files on the computer. If i knew she wanted to recover the data i would have installed the hard drive into my computer and backed it up for her but i didn't know.
Heres the problem: She had a lot of records stored on the computer she needs and I was wondering if there was a way to restore some of her data that i formatted? I am willing to buy the software because i am getting more ppl who ask me to fix their computer. I know that since i installed windows on it, that it is impossible to recover all the formatted data but I think if i just get some she will be happy. I thank you for any help. Thank you.

I need some help on how to recover everything.

Here is what I have.

C: (Failing drive) with Vista Home Premium
D: 1TB storage Hard Drive with some games on it (Steam)
E: Old Harddrive I pulled from an old pc, with windows xp on it except it won't run without a BSOD unless in safemode

I don't have a vista installation disk or anything, but I do have the OS Key.

Should I move over my important files to my D: and then install vista on there to make it my new C:? or should I format my failing drive and reinstall vista? I'm not sure if it will just fail again or not. Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you very much for any help

I need to help someone recover data from a dead scusi harddrive,

I have not yet inspected the device but I am told the computer makes a beep when it starts then fails to read the disk and wont load the operating system.

I was under the impression that a single beep indicated it had found your harddrive, but I maybe wrong.

It also has a scusi card so could it be possible that the card has failed?

I have the ultimate boot CD so I will possibly be able to do some scans on it with this, but is it possible to recover the data myself without sending it off and paying a small fortune?

If so then how do I go about doing this do I need to connect another harddrive to it to transfer the data?

and what software will I need???

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I recently broke my laptop and as it was fairly old decided to upgrade instead of trying to fix it, however I want to get the data from my old laptop to upload onot my new one.

I have a external enclosure for a laptop harddrive that I can slave off but my issue is that the drive from my old laptop is partitioned (C:\ & D:\). My new laptop's system drive is C:\ so when I plug in the harddrive it detects but does not come up as a drive. I've tried to change the drive letter of the C:\ drive but as it's the system drive it won't let me, anyone know what I can do?

Any suggestions would be most welcome, I have 3 years worth of emails on my old harddrive which I really don't want to lose.

Answer:Broken laptop - recover harddrive data

Not sure why the partitions aren't showing up, but I can tell you there is absolutely no point in changing the drive letter as it wouldn't help you access the external drive and could really screw up your current system. What operating sytem were you running on the old drive? If the partitions are formatted as NTFS, they could be refusing to mount due to an "unclean shutdown".

I have a major problem. Because my laptop was having problems involving the 'blue screen of death', I chose to backup my files to an external portable harddrive before reformatting the entire drive.

However, when opening the backup folder, I discovered that my art folder, located in the 'PUBLIC PICTURES' folder was not to be found.

What is the BEST method to recover the files from the 'PUBLIC PICTURES' folder? I had almost 5GIGS worth of pictures.

I KNOW there is a way to recover the files, but not sure if they will even be located in the Public Pictures folder. Is it possible that after reformatting, Windows 7 relocated the contents of the 'Public Pictures' folder to another place on the drive?

Is it possible to restore the folder to previous versions AFTER reformatting the drive?

Can someone PLEASE help me?? This is seven years worth of photos I saved that I'm desperately trying to recover.

THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH for your patience and assistance.

I'm in desperate need to recover things from my corrupted D drive. When I click on it, it says D:\ is not accessible. The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable. When I restart it always does chkdsk for that drive, but it can't repair the corrupt master file table, and it's the same result where the drive is unreadable. I used the Getdata recover my files software to recover the drive. It didn't find the things I desperately need, and I noticed a bunch of files it recovered is now corrupt.

The most important thing I need to recover is a windows movie maker project that I've spent hours upon hours upon hours on for a music video. I so desperately need that .mswmm file. This software found just about all of my windows movie maker projects except that one, just my luck.

The second most important thing I need is my Adobe Audition session files along with the wav's for the sessions. I have a new computer I should be getting today, and my friend will be over in 2 days. I need to figure something out quickly cause he will need to format the drive which will make it lose everything. He is pretty sure that the drive will be unreadable on his laptop which he's bringing over.

It recovered 2 936gb files and a 465 gb file with no file extensions that were labeled $BadClus~$Bad_1 $BadClus~$Bad_3 & $BadClus~$Bad_4 Is there anything I can do to open these files to try to retrieve anything from it?

Answer:Need to recover files from a corrupt unreadable NTFS harddrive

Actually the programs to recover deleted and corrupted files from a drive are not very professional inspite of what they claim. In my experience they hardly ever do a good and professional job.

Only a real professional can make a good and acceptable recovery of corrupted files from a corrupted drive. These professionals charge the earth for it. For Home Users it is hardly ever worth it. But that is my opinion. May be there are others who can give good guidance on this subject so that you are able to recover your data.

I wish you Good Luck

First of all, I want to point out that I have very little knowledge of technology.

I have a NTFS Seagate 2TB Go Flex Desk external hard disk drive. A couple months ago, I found that it had a problem where my laptop could detect it, but couldn't access it and needed to "reformat" it. I left it alone for a while.

Recently, I tried plugging it in again, and behold, it seemed to work okay and I could see all the files and so on. I tried chkdisk without the fixing part (/f). I didn't want to "fix" it until as last resort because it seems to imply some data will be lost. It said there were a lot of bad sectors.

I couldn't read some of the files (most of them were rar files) in my hard disk, and had "read error" and "data error (cyclic redundancy check)". So I basically moved all the files which were normal out of the disk as I couldn't move the others ("can't read from source file or disk") and now I'm left with the broken files, most of which are important. 40gb of 16,000 files.

Is there any hope for me to recover those files? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: after this, how would I deal with the bad sectors?

Answer:Disk read error for files in the harddrive, want to recover files.

OK! The bad sectors are always one of the killers of data on a hard drive. Thatís why we are always asked to back up our needed data at least on two separate drives. So, in the future, you should learn to keep at least two copies of your important data on separate drives or locations.
But, right now, since your drive still could be read on your computer, you could try to run some data recovery programs to take chances. Nowadays, many data recovery programs are developed to help people resolve these troubles.

But, if you are not sure, you could firstly try some drive data recovery freeware such as Recuva, TestDisk and iCare Data Recovery Free, etc.
But, if any data recovery software could not make a difference, you could consult a data recovery expert for help and prepare enough money for it.

Good luck!

So my brother dropped his computer to the ground, and now it is not working properly.
I started windows in repair mode, but the computer freezes like this, but without the repair box.
I was wondering if it is possible to recover some of the files and stuff on the HD, when the computer is unable to boot.
I have taken out the harddrive from my brother's computer, and put it in to my own computer. When i did that, my own computer asked me if i wanted to run a disk-controll or something like that. After it finished, the computer has freezed like this: Imgur
The text at the bottom says: Controll of usn log complete. It has been like that for almost half an hour now, and i am not sure of what to do.
Answers are much appreciated.

Answer:Need help to recover files from a "dead" harddrive

Hello haakelv!

What kind of drive is it that your brother has? Brand and model?

The disk controller is plainly said a chip that controls a drive depending on its type – IDE, SCSI etc. It enables the CPU to “communicate” with the HDD.
The USN Journal is connected with the NTFS format and it maintains a record of changes which were made to the volume.

From what I understand by dropping his PC, your brother broke his hard drive's disk controller which nowadays is integrated in the hard drive itself, and evidently inserting the drive in to your system led to a USN Journal scan, which (if I am translating correctly) CHKDSK has checked the USN log, has repaired the USN Journal data flow and completed. But the system has hanged.

In my opinion the drive is too damaged to load, the disk controller is most likely broken, thus the drive can't communicate with the system on a healthy level.

You could plug the drive out, restart your system, plug in the drive again, go in to BIOS to make sure your own disk is at first booting position and see if you could load into your OS and open the drive through My Computer, but I doubt it would work.

You'll have to use a data recovery software or company if you need anything from the drive.

Good luck!

I recently purchased a wider screen for my computer. I use a bunch of photos to illustrate things. When I was using a laptop. there was no particular need to have pics that were much larger than 500x500 pixels. And so I have been going back and downloading newer pics around 1000-1550 pixels so they are not as grainy on the new screen.

The whys of what I am doing are not important. The problem I have is that when I find a new pic and download say around 1000x1000, the folder insists on saving it as either the dimensions of the original or at 225x225 pixels even when I am asking it to replace the original. This gets even weirder - even though I delete the original and then download the newer, larger copy, it is still saving it as the dimensions of the original.

Any suggestions as to what I can do to stop the folder resizing pics like this?

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

Answer:Seagate Harddrive test tool fail but harddrive data seems intact

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

Or the Seagate tool. Whatever you have. Your title is confusing.

My Dell Vostro 1400 Laptop recently quit working. Its only 4 months old.
I turned it on and it came to a screen saying,

"Windows dould not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

I inserted the setup disc and booted from it, when I got the the Repair option it says,"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue."

So I took the computer down to the local computer store and they put in a new 130 GB harddrive, ran the setup disk again and it displayed the same missing HDD message.

Anyone have any Ideas of what could be wrong???
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Windows Setup Disk cannot find Harddrive, even with a brand new harddrive installed.

I today purchased a 250gb harddrive (a upgrade from my 120gb), and then Vista installed fine.

Now it runs fine, but I get bluescreens after random amounts of time, with errors involving a windows file. Unfortunately, I don't have the bluescreen error details at the moment. I have however uploaded the 3 minidumps from the 3 occasions.

You should consider buying a new drive to replace that one, then copy your data over before it dies

Now i am thinking long term.. i am considering purchasing a "network harddrive", one that is between 500gigz to 1tb. There is a smaller/more affordable Seagate external drive.. but it is not a "network harddrive".. it has 1.5tb.. versus a network drive that is about 2tb but it cost about 314.

My question is, thinking long term.. and considering the setup i have.. which is a regular PC acting as a server.. what should i get?

I have a concern about the security of my old harddrive. There are lots of personal information (data and files) on the old harddrive. It will almost certainly be trashed, but you can't be 100% sure.  If you have a big magnet around, you could set the old one on it for a while - that should do the trick.

Hi all, a while ago I had the idea to start from scratch to clean up the system and gain more performance. But I have not done yet because I have some doubts.

On the PC I have Acronis True Image Home 2011
--> In the part where it says My backups I see the image that I have saved.
--> When I click on "Explore and recover" :To the right I see 2 items to recover: "Reserved for System and Local Disk (C)"
Therefore, the partition (D)will remain intact. Right ? But if I want to restore everything, both partitions, i have to use the option "Files and folders" ?

Extra info : I did not create the image, other person is who created it :P

Answer:Difference between recover partitions or recover files and folders.

How long ago was that Acronis image made?

I guess I don't understand your intent. You talk about starting over to clean up and gain more performance, but then express interest in restoring "everything".

Was that image made at a time when your system was running perfectly? How has your system changed since that date? If you restore, you will have to reinstall any applications you've acquired since the image was made. And that image won't contain any personal data acquired since it was made. Maybe it contains no personal data at all?
If you are going to "start from scratch", I assume you mean you want to do a clean install of Windows.

If you were to do that, the only thing in that image file that might possibly be important to you would be personal files---pictures, videos, mp3s, Word documents, browser bookmarks, possibly email, etc. And that would be personal files as of the date of that image, not your current personal files. And not Windows itself.

If I wanted to "start over", I would:

1: back up all current personal files to some other drive, probably external. I would NOT use an image for this. I'd just copy them with the mouse.

2: reinstall Windows.

If I did those 2 things, the contents of the Acronis image would be irrelevant.

You should forget about Acronis if you don't understand it or know whats in any images you have. Particularly if you didn't make the image yourself. Images can fail you anyway. I'd never rely on them exclusi... Read more

This morning a fan in my case was making strange noises (either CPU or GPU fan I think) and so I turned my computer off. I turned it on a little later and the computer was making a really odd clicking noise, so I unplugged each harddrive in turn to see which was causing it. I removed the problem drive (not the one with my XP installation on) and then turned the computer on again. This time it just said could not detect boot disk. I've tried installing XP again, but it gets as far as loading all the setup files and then my PC reboots. The bios still detects the harddrive still in.

The harddrives are just normal IDE 120gb drives (the removed one is a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 and the one still in is a Barracuda Seagate). I don't understand why the first stopped working (it is at most 6 months old) and why the 2nd one's installation is not detected (it is only a month or 2 old). Up til today, my computer was working perfectly. At the moment my whole computer is useless and the fan is still making the same weird noise occasionally.

Answer:One harddrive died, other harddrive's XP not detected

Welcome to Techspot

It sounds like the Drive you removed was the Primary, so the system can't find an MBR.
Also if that is right did you change the Jumper on the Slave left in your box?

I just recently bought a used computer to replace the one I had which died on me. For some reason, my old harddrive isn't being recognized as the main hard drive when I remove the new one and plug my old one in. Both harddrives are recognized when I have my old one plugged up with the extra power and IDE cable, so I was wondering if it is possible to copy the contents of my old drive to the new one and have it where it transfers all of my installed software over without having to reinstall everything?

Answer:Harddrive to harddrive data transfer?

So what you tried to do is get WinXP to boot after it was installed on a different computer. This usually does not work well unless the Motherboard onthe new computer is almost identical to the old one. At the very least you would want to uninstall all drivers that were istalled as part of the old motherboard then do a repair installation of Windows XP. Then again if your installation of Windows is an OEM version of Windows it is not legal to use it on a second computer even if the second computer is a replacement for the first. If this is a retail copy of Windows then you can do it. You would need also the drivers for the new system.. As far as transfering installed programs from one hard drive to another and have them work properly if at all, it is not likely that you will succeed in doing so as installed programs make changes to the registry so that windows will know where to go look for the files to operate these programs. Just transferring the programs will not make the changes needed to your registry that an installation would make.

I just purchased these two items:

and the problem is that the coolmax enclosure wont read the harddrive. I installed it correctly (this is not my first 2.5 external hdd), and the computer detects the harddrive. It says that it is installed and ready to use, but now drive is popping up in "my computer". I dont think that the harddrive is to big for the enclosure, its only 40gb and most enclosures maxes out at 40gb. I could not find out what this enclosure's max compatibility is, so i hope that this is not the problem.

It is not the enclosure that is broken, because i put a different harddrive in the coolmax enclosure and it works. And i tried the Fujitsu hdd in another enclosure and it does not work. So it is definitly the hdd

The harddrive is a ATA-6 and the coolmax enclosure is a IDE ATA 100. I dont know what the 100 stands for, but i dont think that is the problem.

any help would be greatly appreciated. This is a gift for my girlfriend and i really want this to work.

Firmware 3.AAD
Date code 08257
Barracude 7200.10

Answer:External Harddrive into Interal Harddrive

if you are building a laptop... no. it is built completely differently.
with a desktop computer you would not be able to either because the connection inside its casing is different. its better to keep your external the way it is and get an internal. you could then use your external as a backup.

hey everyone, my mom's computer isnt working correctly. it turns on but it doesnt boot up. nothing shows up on the monitor. she has very important files and links that are saved to her computer that she needs asap.

my first thought was maybe i could access her computer through the router that we share but other websites told me its impossible without remote connection. and we cannot setup connects or access her computer at the moment.

i would like to know if it would be a good idea to take her harddrive out and put it into another computer. id rather not put it into my computer (just in case something goes wrong) but my brother has a laptop and could we put her harddrive in his? just temporarily so we can get to those files.

is that the best idea? to transfer her harddrive? if so is it okay that its going into a laptop and not a desktop computer....

Answer:transfering harddrive (harddrive problem)

You're best bet it to get a 2.5 Adapter for laptop HDDs then you would take that adapter and connect it to a desktop CD-ROM IDE 2 channel 3.5 Ribbon cable goes into the adapter. There you could transfer files off that drive. That's how it's done in IT repair shop. Below cost $6.99.

can get it off here or try newegg or wherever you want go to a local store to get..

It also looks like this various version of the adapter

They all work..

My grandma needed more harddrive space on her pc so I installed an 80 gb harddrive on her pc. Right now it's just her slave drive. Her c harddrive is only 20gb, so could I just copy everything on that harddrive to the 80gb and make that the master hard drive and the old one the slave? Or would that cause problems? I want to do this so she can continue saving files to her c harddrive instead of a different harddrive.

Answer:Is it posible to change the c harddrive to another harddrive?

You would need to create an image of the the current 20GB drive and map it onto the 80GB drive (most ghosting/imaging utilities allow you to expand the 20GB partition to the full size of the drive without issue). The most common way to go about doing this is with Norton Ghost, but it's not free. There's a few Linux boot disks that can do it as well I believe, but I don't know any off the top of my head. Hopefully someone will have a suggestion for a free boot disc.

I am looking at my friend's 2 yrs old PC mainly due to not booting up. I just found out that his pc's 10 Gb harddrive has bad sectors of only 700Kb after using scandisk so I reinstall windows myself. It has booted up no problems and running fine as usual but is it necessary to buy a new harddisk? After all, it runs fine even though there are still 700Kb bad sections on existing harddisk. Advice will be much appreciated, thanksGary

Answer:Bad sectors in harddrive - need a new harddrive??

Assuming you reformatted the HD, did the bad sectors show during Formatting or was it some other software that decided you had bad sectors? If it was formatting that disclosed the problem then it may be true. If not it might be a spurious warning and could be ignored.

My old harddrive is only 20 GB and my new harddrive is 235GB.My old HDD is maxed out and i want to transfer EVERYTHING to my 235GB HDD. Basically making it the primary drive. The old HDD is my C drive and the new one is my E drive. How would I do this safely?

Answer:Small old harddrive, new big harddrive

If you mean you want to transfer everything (Windows, programs, data files, etc.) to the new hard drive, take a look at the software tools and instructions from the hard drive manufacturer for doing that.

i think i have deleted a file that allowed me to view my snaps in a picture browser, i put them onto disk, and then deleted the file from my pc,i like to keep tidy and every now and again i go through my files and start deleting anything i think is taking up space, i dont really know what im doing yet,but i put my disk in to have a look at them, but unfortunately a box came up telling me to re-install rgt007.dll sorry but i havnt got a clue how to go about it, i would be grateful for any help or advice, thanks, joel

Answer:how can i see my pics again ? !!!!

I am fairly new to all this myself but..... I think rgt007.dll is a file needed with greenstreet software (a google search for this brought two hits both pointing to, one in german and one in french!.If you have the software disks you could have a look for this on them (goodness knows what you do with it when you find it though, I think it depends on your operating system).I have Greenstreet software on my system and I have this file in c:\windows\system32 (on XP home).I hope this is of some help!

I've uploaded a lot of photos. However, when I view the thumbnails I get about 3/4 of the way down and I cant see anymore; yet, they are there as evidenced by moving my cursor over the blank area-which allows me to read which image it is. I can then click on one and it pulls up the photo. Any thoughts why I cant view all of them?

Ah ... the joys of following all the tutorials herein (and I highly recommment them too!)
Somewhere I've changed a setting and now
instead of seeing thumbnails of my pictures when I go to the folder
I see all pictures with the same generic icon
whereas before I saw thumbnails of each pic.

What do I have to do to get my view back?

p.s. I'm not meaning the options of Icons, List, Details etc

Answer:Where have my pics gone?

right click my computer >> properties>> in left pan click advanced system settings >> advanced tab >>
in performance click settings >> check "show thumbnails instead of icons" that should work.

Hope this helps

Question: red x 4 pics

My neighbor has no trouble receiving e mail from me that has pictures imbedded in the body but when she returns them or sends them to others a red x appears in the upper left of the box that should contain the picture. All else seems to be working normally.

Answer:red x 4 pics

i had a similar problem with an old computer that i no longer have. My temporary solution was to save the pictures to my computer and attach them again to emails to be sent/forwarded. It was a hassle but did the trick for me. I'm sure there are better solutions but that may be a temporary one.

Question: pics

so i want to take about 1000 pics of my garage sale itimes with disciption and price and let people veiw them without me emailing them or putting them on a server unless i can use my old desk top for a server and i want to have a online gargae sale how do i do this

You could use a photo sharing site like Flickr to upload files and share them. As for selling things, that's requires setting up an e-commerce site that includes things like a shopping cart and secure payment processing. It isn't something you just install on an old desktop. You'd have to pay fees for hosting and payment processing. Unless you're looking to sell a lot of items for a significant amount of money, it's really not worth it.
