Strange Laptop Screen Issue

Question: Strange Laptop Screen Issue

Hi All

Does anyone have any experience of an Advent Laptop working fine, but
when you shut Windows Vista down, shortly after the screen goes blank,
the screen switches back on to a bright white?

The laptop is not on, but the screen is.... obviously this drains the battery.

Apparently some wine was spilt towards the QWERTY side of the keyboard

Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey all,

I'm currently trying to provide some tech support to my girlfriend, who is experiencing some weird issues with her laptop.

I've used two hard drives trying to figure this all out - the first, which I'll call HDD1, is the hard drive from the laptop, containing all the gf's files and OS, etc. The second (HDD2) is a hard drive from an old laptop of mine - still with everything on it from when the laptop died.

So, the main issue is that when she starts her computer, it won't boot. The screen claims there isn't any hard drive attached to boot from. My first assumption was that HDD1 had failed in some way, so my first reaction was to pop it in an external USB enclosure to see if I could recover anything. To my surprise, HDD1 worked just fine when attached to my PC via USB, so we grabbed important files and backed them up. Since HDD1 worked, I assumed there was a problem with the laptop's machinery for reading HDDs. To test this, I hooked up the older HDD2, and was again rather surprised when the laptop began to boot up with no issues.

Assuming that whatever was wrong had magically corrected itself, I hooked HDD1 back up to the laptop, and even got so far as a logon screen. At this point, the laptop was functioning exactly as it had prior to the problems. However, when we attempted to login to Windows, the correct password for my gf's user account failed to work. I'm assuming this is because I took ownership of her user dire... Read more

Today my Windows 7 Home Premium Asus laptop has begun acting up weirdly. Here's a list of the things that are happening.
-Slow boot and restart/shut down times. More than 5 minutes in length.
-When I logged in my usual admin account, I was logged in as a guest and most of my files are gone. Speed wasn't too different from the usual.
-Tried going to safe mode. Problems persisted.
-CPU usage is at like 0-5% at most times. That and the fact that it's as quick as usual when it finally does turn on makes me suspect that there isn't a virus.

Answer:[SOLVED] Strange issue with my laptop

In addition, I've also tried enabling the elevated administrator account. On that account, the laptop boots at a normal rate with the elevated account but I don't know where to go from here.

I have the strangest issue going on with my laptop. To begin wit, it is a Dell Latitude D620 that we bought used but in perfect working order. About a year after we bought it I was using it and it just stopped turned out that the adapter was dead. Now at the time I figured that the adapter had probably broken some time before and had not been charging the battery for a while but we just didn't notice and the computer dying was just the charge leaving. I do recall getting a low battery message at the time and plugging in the adapter and it not helping. So we bought a new adapter and everything seemed to be okay but maybe not...the adapter isn't the tightest of fits and so sometimes it falls out. when that happens, the computer dies. I never really thought about that but that should not be occurring so I decided to look into it. The battery appears to be fine. The little test thing on the battery itself shows all lights when I push the button. The little icon in the tray shows a 98% charge, Quickset shows the same and days that the battery is working properly. However something is obviously not right because it turns off when the cord comes unplugged and will not turn on unless plugged in. The setting is correctly set to work off battery so I'm guessing there is something wrong with the computer itself...perhaps seriously wrong. Any ideas?

I have recently been having battery problems with my laptop which is now just over a year old. The problems comes when the laptop reaches low battery levels because the lapotop always hibernates, and reaches critical battery whenever the battery goes below 20%. Whenever i plug in my laptop however to charge it from hibernte it always tells me it has only got 1% charge despite the fact it told me it was at 20%, 10 seconds prior to hibernating. From here the laptop rapidly charges from 1% to 20% in just a couple of minutes, before it charges at a normal rate from 20% to 100%. The laptop also fails to warn me about low power, unless i change the low power level to over 21% which just seems stupid.
I have tried changing advanced power options for the power plans and factory resetting the laptop but neither helped. I also tried to recalibrate the battery but it didn't help. I also tried running the hp support assistant battery test, but it didnt find any problems.
Any help would be appreciated

Hi, My T42 boots up with a dimmed display (very faint). I have set the display option in the BIOS to "high", no change.I thought it was an inverter issue, but when I swapped the screen with another working T43 screen, I saw the same problem - the display remains dim.  By the way, I tested the T42 screen on the T43 and it works fine. So I got a vga cable and plugged the T42 to an external monitor (I used my TV). I got a clear image on my TV whilst the thinkpad still have a dimmed display.  I have tried Fn+Home, the brightness is set to the highest. I have tried to swap the DIMM with another one, no luck. I have check all cables and also I don't think this is a BGA issue - i have applied some pressure on the ATi chip, no change. I'm out of ideas  Your thought will be much appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like a blown fuse on the motherboard. If you have a multimeter, test all fuses and check which one reads an "open".
Good luck.

I just got a new Asus Vivo Tab TF810 and seem to be having a very strange and annoying issue with the screen.
Wherever there is supposed to be a light grey color on the screen those areas flicker between normal and a darker grey. When it is the darker grey it almost looks like how gradients would look on a 16 color screen where the color almost have a crosshatch pattern on it. And it only happens in areas with light grey. White and other colors still show fine. For example if I look in the pc settings screen in Windows 8 the left hand side with the menu options gets the flicker and the right hand side looks fine. Again, it happens anywhere with a light grey color, regardless of the app. It started out not happening too often but now it is non stop. I have tried restarting but it hasn't worked.
Another issue that may be related is that twice now I have moved to another app and I can see in imprint of the previous screen like a burn in except I only had the app up for a second. As soon as I do anything else the "burn in" goes away instantly.
Not sure if this is software or hardware related. I really don't want to send my tablet in for repair. Any ideas?
Thank you.

My first post on these boards, hoping to get some help with an issue I've run into...

I got a laptop (Lenovo T420) which I've been running Windows 7 on for a while - everything has been working fine. Today I formatted my hard drive and did a clean install of Windows 8 Pro - working fine except for one strange but quite serious issue.

Whenever I open the lid of my laptop after having closed it (I've set it to "do nothing" when closed) the screen goes black for a second - then I get sent to the desktop and there is no mouse pointer showing - keyboard commands either doesn't work or behave strangely, and all I can do is do a hard reset and restart, upon which everything works until I close the lid again.

Would appreciate any help solving this problem, I'm not sure how to go about troubleshooting this kind of thing...

I'm currently on holiday in Thailand and I bought a basic laptop for writing while here. It's an Acer Switch One SW1-011 with a removable keyboard. It's running Windows 10 32-bit single language and everything is in English. I added Norwegian keyboard to English US as most of what I write is in Norwegian. On a Norwegian keyboard, there will be a character known as ? where the semicolon is on other keyboards. I have several laptops and PCs at home with both English and Norwegian keyboards, so I know my way around them. The issue I'm having is that the ? character does not type when I press the key for it (; semicolon). However, if I hold the key down, suddenly several ????? will start to appear. So I have to do this and delete the extra ones every single time I want to write an ?. If I change the language to Eng with international keyboard, the semicolon ; (same key) types just fine. I did an experiment and added a Danish keyboard, which has the ? and ? characters reversed with respect to Norwegian keyboards and the same thing happens, only this time it's the ? that will not type unless I hold down the key. So there is something strange with this one key and languages other than English and it is driving me crazy trying to figure out how to fix it!!! Can anyone help? I downloaded SharpKeys and AutoHotKey, but they aren't helping.

Answer:New laptop - Very strange keyboard issue when using other languages

Welcome to the forums JumpUpnGetDowns!

Well, just off hand I would say your problem stems from the fact that your Windows installation is a "single language" edition.

Answer:[SOLVED] Strange Issue with Wife's Laptop

Hi. . .

Try a few things, please.

- START | type internet - select Internet Explorer (no add-ons) - test IE7

- Right-click on an IE7 icon and select run as administrator - test IE7

- boot into SAFEMODE w/Networking and test IE7 there

Was this a re-install back to OEM defaults... or do you own a full retail copy of Vista? If the former, did the laptop come w/ any trial offers for items like Norton Internet Security, McAfee, Kaspersky, etc...? What anti-virus are you running and are you using a firewall besides the Windows Firewall? I assume Vista SP1 installed?

That is weird about Office asking for the DVD each time. Do you have this same version installed elsewhere (you are usually allowed 3 installed copies)?

Answer:Strange screen issue on Satellite L300

If possible connect your notebook to external display or TV to see if the same will be shown there.

If yes, than this is caused by defective graphic card. If not than is notebook?s display defective and must be replaced.

Hi All,

I am a rookie PC Technician learning my trade and a newbie to the site.

I was hoping someone could help me with this little issue.

On boot up windows Xp stops at the splash screen and gets caught in the perpetual loading motion (a problem I have seen many times before) As per I have popped in the Windows disc and completed a repair. It did pick up errors but still does the same thing. I put the Hard drive in my test machine and it boots to windows but asks for windows activation blah blah but all is working fine. So I put back in machine and the same problem. I also then put a spare hard drive with xp in the first machine (the one with the issue) and again it has the same loading issue. So this rules out the hard drive but what other hardware could cause this issue. RAM? Motherboard?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Answer:Strange Windows XP splash screen issue

What is the system specs of the system in question?

Try booting with minimum hardware, i.e. one RAM stick, NO Optical Media, only One HDD if there are multiple HDDs in this computer. If the problem persist & and if this system have more then one RAM modules, then stay with minimum hardware as suggested above but try booting with the other RAM Module(s) one by one. If that doesn't work, there is a reasonable chance that there is something up with the motherboard.

The first problem is that my mother regularly plays pool on Yahoo (that's not the problem).. If you've played games on Yahoo you know that below the game is a chat window. Recently a status bar appeared on the game window, covering half the chat. You cannot see what someone types until something new is typed and pushes the first up to the top half of the chat area. Bear in mind that my mother uses 800 x 600 resolution. When I suggested she change to 1024 x 768(which fixes the issue), she claimed "The table is too small to see if I do that.". I suggested she try Firefox. I thought this was finally my chance to convert her, as I've been trying for 2 years now. She went to her little game in Firefox, but still had the same problem. I changed her resolution and said to her "Get used to it." Then left. This morning I get on and she tells me she's having a problem. I sign onto her user name and it's back to 800 x 600. Hi, I'm not sure if this is in the right place... this is a new account, and I don't know much about this site. My apologies if this is in the wrong category, it's just such a unique issue that I'm not sure where it would go. Anyway, I have an Acer Aspire V5 571p laptop. I've had it for about two years, and it's been working well enough for what I need. (I'm a college student) But recently, I wasn't able to connect to my wifi at home. Nothing that I know of changed within the router or modem, and nothing has changed within the laptop (except for the connection issue) It connects just fine everywhere else. The other two computers in the house (not mine) connect just fine, they're both slightly older desktops. The other laptop that I own isn't connecting as well.
I've done all of the following:
-reset the router
-reset the modem
-restarted my computer
-made sure all the information is correct for the wireless network
-completely reset my laptop to factory default
-bought a new router
-moved the router around the house to see if I was too far away.
I don't know what else to do, I've talked to four different tech support professionals, and none of their advice has worked. I'm coming here as a last ditch effort. Maybe someone else has had the same problem? I'm about to give up, but I need wifi at home for school, so I don't really have that option.
I appreciate any advice at all.

Have an old asus laptop that i use very little. I noticed that when i type something ... nothing shows up.

I open up google. I type keyboard letters into google... nothing shows up. However when i click the letter F... it would seem to click on the top right corner where the 3 horizontal lines are located right under the X. The google chrome settings.

I then use my touchpad or regular mouse. When i try to click on anything like picture i have or video etc or icons on my desktop.. it would open up the properties. Does anyone know how do i fix this issue? Basically i cannot type any letter anywhere.

Answer:Laptop Keyboard Doesn't Work Very Strange Issue

Basically anything i click on does this... unless i click on start menu and then click on the program. Thus if i click on say avast or a program on desktop, it shows the properties of it. If i click on program using start menu... it does show up.

I scanned using malwarebytes. It did mention something trojan.something but i removed it. But this is using malwarebytes free. I have avast as well but doesnt detect anything.

Its definitely not number lock. I tried this.

The other thing that was strange was after a while... suddenly the mouse and touchpad it did click. But then when i shut the lid of my computer down then opened it up... have same issue. So same problem.

The thing though is i did recently go to certain sites where they have passwords for adult sites... and used it to log in etc. Could this be the cause of it? Thus i used a login and password from someone who posted free username/pass for an adult site.

heres another strange thing. When i click on tab... it would display all the windows i have opened in like a ruler... then each time i press tab... it would go to each window.

Hi everyone!

I have been working on trying to get my brother's Dell laptop to boot. It has apparently been doing a checkdisk every time he boots up. This has been going on for about 2 weeks. Before that it was acting flaky like it needed Windows reinstalled. His wife likes to download games and junk from the internet and I'm constantly fixing the darned thing.

He brought it to me tonight and what it is doing is not booting at all. When I turn on the power it goes to the typical Dell screen that gives the option of F2 for Setup and F12 for Boot options.

1. If I go into setup it is showing the info on the memory and HDD so I know that it probably is seeing those ok.

2. If I let it try to boot without hitting F2 or F12 then it goes to a back lit black screen and stops. It won't go any further.

3. If I hit F12 and try to boot to the Dell utilities CD it will boot to it. And run tests. There was a bad spot on the HDD when I ran the tests just on the HDD.

4. If I put in any Windows CD (I've tried 2 different cd's, both tested ok in another computer) to reinstall the OS then it does just what it was doing while trying to boot to the HDD. Just that back lit black screen.

5. If I boot to the utilities CD and then exit the program, and then change directory to the C:/ a directory listing shows "Volume in Drive C: is MS-RAMDRIVE" and shows as the only file on the C: drive. I'm not sure if this is an accurate listing of the ... Read more

Hi there.

I've had my Advent laptop for 2-3 years now - it was purchased new from a reputable store and has served me well. Recently though, something strange and incredibly disruptive has been happening, and i was wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar problem, or could suggest a fix.

Basically, the issue - I'd be typing away, say in a web browser or in a Word document, and then all of a sudden the laptop would become unresponsive, and stop typing the letters of the keys I was hitting. This then developed further, as instead of not typing anything, it would type a combination of the same three keys (n, b and z) whatever key I hit. I've also had several similar 'Hotkey' issues, such as pressing Enter resulting in Windows Media Centre being launched. Pressing a key can also result in an unwanted action, such as launching the Control Panel, as if I'd pressed Ctrl/Alt/Shift along with the key.

Initially, I thought the problem was keyboard related, and so replaced my laptop keyboard with a USB keyboard, removing all the drivers for the original keyboard. This seemed to solve the problem, but only days later, the issue was back with a vengeance.

I was just wondering if anybody else had experienced this, or a similar problem, and whether somebody could suggest a possible solution/fix?

Thanks in advance

Hi everyone. Fairly new laptop (less than 6 months) which recently has been crashing in a really odd way when doing certain tasks. No BSOD or anything, just straight shuts down. I use Skyrim to test it because it usually causes a crash within the first few minutes. What usually happens is I start up the game, get into gameplay (past title screen loading screen etc.), it plays fine for a few seconds then the fan will start going apebleep and the laptop completely crashes a few seconds after that.
The strange thing is this only happens under a few conditions. The battery setting has to be set to high performance and the charger has to be plugged in. The crashes never happen when the machine is running on battery alone and they still happen when I remove the battery and just run the laptop plugged in.
It doesn't seem to be an overheating issue; both cores stay around 45 degrees even when the fan starts to go crazy (max is 52 and 49). Changing chargers didn't help either, both the one that came with the laptop and a store bought one lead to crashes.
Laptop is a Toshiba Satellite s50t-B running windows 8.1
i7 4510U cpu
8GB ram
AMD Radeon R7 M260
Really appreciate any help at all. Thank everyone.

So about 1 in 5 youtube videos I watch, upon trying to maximize the window, I get an all green screen with a strange little pattern on the right. I'll attach a tinypic link to a screenshot I took. I have no idea why this is happening, and coudln't find any help via Google. This has happened lately with some of my .WMV on my computer, as well. I would say in these cases, the chances are something like 1 in 20.Is this an internet, java, flash, video card, or other type of problem? What can I do to fix it? BTW: I have a feeling that charging my iphone via the USB on my computer affects the likelihood, but this could just be idle speculation. Here's a link to the screenshot of a youtube video:BTW: If the green screen thing occurs, it lasts for the whole video no matter what, until I minimize it. I have a 2 yr old Lenovo Yoga. It has developed marks on the screen which look like a kind of shadow pattern in the form of a kind of grid. At first I thought it was caused by the keyboard but it's not a mirror image - the grid covers the whole screen. It looks faded, like dust, but it's impossible to clean off.  I have a picture but there's no facility here to attach it. Please can someone advise? thanks

I have a 1810TZ and somehow it has a line of dirt (or something) under the screen, all down the right-hand side. Its about 5mm to 10mm wide in places and its patchy. Whatever it is its also on the top left-hand corner.

Does anyone have any idea what it is?

Answer:Very strange laptop screen problem

Make a screenshot by pressing the 'Print Screen' key, open Paint and click on Edit then Paste, then File then Save as and save it as a JPG file.
If the line is on the screenshot you have a problem with the laptop's Graphics, if it's not then you have a problem with the laptop's screen.

Attach the screenshot to your next post if it shows the line.
Otherwise can you take a picture of the screen and post that ?

On my hp 15 notebook laptop I have been noticing whenever the screen stops displaying, this includes powering down, or even if the screen is just set to stop displaying after a while it goes completely black like it is suppose too than really fast there is two horizontal lines afterwards one starting at the top and one at the bottom that meet in the middle before vanishing. I think I have also noticed it sometimes when powering it on but mostly when powering off or when screen stops displaying.
I am running windows 10 os but I do not know much or if this is even a problem since its been doing this for about a month now but if it is a problem I would guess its hardware related but I still listed os just in case.
I do not know what could cause this, could a problem in memory such as RAM be causing this or is it normal for an laptop thats around 3 years old?
Any help or information provided would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Replaced Screen, Windows Xp Logo briefly appears then nothing?

We have had a compaq r4000, where we have replaced the screen, cable and inverter.

When we power on the PC, we see no bios/starup text only the windows xp logo for a short period (looks in limited colours also) then all goes black.

If we connect a monitor to the vga port the PC seems to work okay, with all bios screens and windows loading properly.

I have tried updating the bios (just to rule it out), resetting the bios etc. But am now stuck on what else we can do.

Tried putting in the old cable, screen and inverter in different combinations and still no luck.

I would think it was the graphics card if, but then I cant understand how the external screen would then work.

Now banging head against hard door

Answer:strange activity with new laptop screen

The video drivers are set to a resolution/refresh that the internal screen cannot handle (while the external one can)? Or, the video drivers are set to disable the internal display? Or, the video drivers are FUBAR and you should reinstall them?

I was watching a video as usual on my laptop, and suddenly this clear grey bar appears on the screen. It runs from top to bottom just left of center of the screen about an inch and a half wide. No matter what screens I enter it's still there. I can see everything underneath it just fine, such as text, pictures, etc, except that it's made lighter because of this bar. I tried restarting the computer and it returns. The bar appears right from the restart, so the windows loading screen before it reaches the desktop. When I went to the bios screen it was still there as well. However, it's not there when the computer is off.

What's strange is, in addition to this suddenly appearing, at the same time all my settings in windows returned to default by themselves. Sound settings, graphics settings, and text settings that I set all reverted back to the factory defaults.

I would really appreciate any advice or ideas on how to solve this problem.

G'dayThis isn't a major problem as the laptop works fine when booted up but I've noticed that when you turn it on (Dell Latitude CPx) the Dell screen and the Windows 2000 Professional screen have shrunk and occupy just a box in the centre of the screen. As soon as the bootup reaches the stage where the small "Windows 2000 is starting up" window appears (with the blue background) the full screen is being used again and remains full screen once booted. It's almost as if the startup screen is booting at a different resolution all of a sudden?!If you can imagine a screen with a resolution of 1078x768 with just an 800x600 screen centred in it, that's what it looks like. The border is black. It never used to do this, only started yesterday upon booting up.Any thoughts why, or indeed how to change it back?!BA

Answer:Laptop Screen - Strange Bootup Happenings!

I think they do boot at a different resolution until the display drivers are loaded. You are probably used to having this stretched to fill the screen but your laptop does it differently. I think most windows systems still boot at 640x480.It would be something I would have thought always happend though. Don't know why this would change unless you had altered the bios possibly.

So today I opened my acer aspire 5100 and i logged on to vista. And as i was getting started i noticed a small (width) yellow line which went top to bottom on the left. I thought something was wrong with the screen. So i emailed acer and that was not a big help. Now i have 3 lines that change colors and i am worried more will appear. Later on i applied presure and pushed left and they went away. But i am not sure how to keep it there. After i let go and the screen moved a little right and the lines appered. I think this is becuase something moved the screen right weather it was from a trip or something else. What can i do to get rid of the stripes or vertically adjust the laptop? Thanks Slamdunka

Answer:Laptop Screen, Strange lines down left side.

I'd let whoever sold it to you fix it - you talk about a trip but don't seem sure - if you can't remember doing anything that could have damaged the laptop I wouldn't be guessing while talking to them - warranties only cover it if it is the result of parts being defective.

Hi -  I hope someone can help to identify what the issue is here, please? Bought a 510s-14 laptop back in June and and been using it fine until a few weeks back. When using the browser (Google Chrome), these 'squares' as can be seen from the photos below come up on the screen. I then have to shut the browser down and open it up again and it seems fine until it randomly happens again the same day or two days later. There is no pattern and I'm not doing anything in particular when it happens. Run the Lenovo diagnostic tool, which found nothing and everything is upto date on the machine. Any ideas, please?

Answer:510S-14ISK Laptop - Very strange 'squares' on the screen

That may be a glitch in Chrome from a few years back resurfacing that involved using the GPU for its 2D Canvas rendering, which is enabled by default. The first thing I would do is go to, and install the latest "display drivers and Video Graphics" drivers for your system if not already installed, because updated drivers may resolve the problem.  If not, you can open Chrome, and in the address bar type or paste:  chrome://flags/   which will open a page with some of Chrome's experimental features, locate Accelerated 2D canvas (should be 3rd one down) and click the Disable button below it. Best of luck,

Hello, So I have a user that just recently started to have an issue.  The laptop is fine (beyond the sound issues with the X230 which aren't solved (sound issue)), but if the user puts the laptop in the docking station with the laptop lid/screen closed/down, the external monitor only displays the desktop background but no login screen or desktop icons. This user has Windows 7 Pro. on it, I just installed the latest video driver from Lenovo's site and that didn't help.  I made sure the screens were set to clone and not extended displays. When the user flips up the laptop screen/lid, both screens are cloned and all is fine.  Supposedly this just started to happen a few days ago. But if the user has the laptop turned off, puts it in the docking station, closes the lid and turns the laptop on, the external monitor works just fine. I've changed clone to extended desktop just to see if that would help any but it didn't.  Set her back to cloned displays. Only other thing I can think of doing is to make sure the external monitor's resolution is set right but...don't understand what's going on.... Thoughts?

Answer:x230 (2320) laptop issue with external monitor when laptop lid/screen is up

Hi, cftech
My first recommendation would be to make sure that the BIOS and chipset drivers are the latest version. Since the external monitor works, just only certain circumstances, this is most likely a software issue of some sort. The BIOS can be found here and the chipset here.
Also, if possible, could you have the user try to connect to the external monitor without the docking station? I'm just curious if the docking station could have something to do with the issue,
Best of luck, and let me know how it goes

I know this is really bad... but I knocked over a cup of water onto my open laptop last night while browsing the internet. I began to towel up the water and tip it upside down to let it drain out, but it soon flashed this crazy screen of vertical rainbow lines, with a horizontal rainbow strip in the middle. It also was making these strange noises, some sounded mechanical, some were actually coming out of the speakers, which I had on mute. I can't really remember exactly, so it's hard to describe, but it sounded like screaming and buzzing. Also, the battery light was flashing orange. The only way we could shut it off was removing the battery.
My first question: This seems pretty severe, so the chances of me fixing myself are slim. But I was just wondering if it was safe to reconnect the battery and try to power up? I'm concerned that something will blow up or something. lol
Second: I've never had any major hardware issues before, and seeing that this is a fairly new laptop with no other problems, I may opt to get it fixed rather than purchasing a new one. I'm also dirt broke. But since all my other problems have dealt with software, which I can figure out, what would be a good, cheap place to take my laptop to get it looked at? Would it be cheaper/possible just to have them diagnose the issues and attempt to repair them myself?

This is a Dell Studio 14 laptop, with an Intel i3 processor and Windows 7.

I have a strange issue with my gaming computer, and I'm not sure if its Hardware, software or virus, but I think its virus or hardware. the problem started when i was on a website while viewing a video, wireless was slow, and the screen began having small problems like areas with lower resolution and frame-rate drop, at first  i thought it was the monitor and turned it off and turned it back on, but that did not help, so i exited out of Google chrome which after several seconds did shut out, and then normally turned my computer off. several hours later when i tried to turn it back on, very strange symbols displayed all over the screen during boot up, until the windows XP loading sign which was normal, but then after that ended the top of the screen turned blue and if i moved my mouse, the top half of the screen would display and then go no further and after several seconds revert back to blue. so i shut it down manually by holding the power button, and then rebooted it in safety mode. safety mode did boot, but it still had no background and strange bluelines in it, as well as being slow. i immediately started my virus protection scan, but so far it has shown nothing. i have no idea what the problem could be, and any help would be appreciated. Have Dell Latitude D400 Laptop which is several years old. For many months, had minor problem where LCD screen would have partial garbled horizontal lines, but when I shifted the screen angle -- moved screen on hinges -- back and forth slightly, then screen would be fine. But recently, the bottom 70% of the screen has turned to olive green mush with a few other vertical lines, where as the top 30% of the screen is fine. When I connect external monitor to rear jack, I am able to see all the graphics there and the hardware and software otherwise performing. When run built-in diagnostics, get graphics error with no external monitor, but all tests just fine when ext monitor connected. Conclusion from on line chat with Dell Tech was LCD Screen problem and referred me to the toll free SALES phone number -- meaning just purchase another one.

How do I know if the problem is the LCD screen being shot, or possibly just needing to clean or repair the connection through the hinges from the CPU/graphics card to the screen itself? If the latter, who should I seek to do such a repair or can I get guidance to open the unit and try myself as I am technically comfortable doing so with instruction? And given the cost of new laptops today, if I need to go outside for repairs, where should I look and up to what cost do you think is worth it, vs just abandon and purchase a new one.

Answer:Laptop LCD screen or screen connection issue

Could be a bad connection or the LCD might be shot. I would take it apart and at least poke around if it is no longer under warranty. Dell has some pretty good service manuals on their site. I think yours is here:

If you don't find anything obvious wrong with it, you can most likely get a screen off FleaBay for a few bucks and try it out.

Or just get some huge hinges and mod a 50" plasma screen on it...

Good luck!

About 2 weeks ago, a pink line appeared on my laptop screen. It is a straight line running down the length of the screen on the left side. A couple of days ago another line appeared, this time yellow. I am fairly certain that this is a hardware issue (driver re-install and system rebuild have not helped). I contacted HP who told me my 15month old laptop is out of warranty and will cost £250 to repair.Do I have any other options?ThanksTony Webber

Answer:HP Laptop screen issue

Not really it is a hardware issue rather than software I suspect. You could try ebay to get yourself a new screen cheaper and install it yourself. Usually screens are about £50 - 150 depending on the one you need. However some home insurance may cover you for the costs but remember the rise in the premium before you do claim.

I've had a HP dv6 laptop for close to a year now and have had zero issues up until the last week. I've noticed when watching videos in fullscreen for even a short period of time the contrast for the screen goes right up up when the video is exited, basically if I watch something and then minimise it whatever is behind it is almost unreadable, such as the standard chrome bar up top looks almost one solid, bright colour, after 5 to 10 seconds its back to how it should look.
It's also a LED display
Anybody have a similar situation or know what the problem could be?

For the past few days sometimes when I open my laptop I get a grey screen with horizontal streaks (sometimes black with horizontal streaks) running across the screen. If I close the screen and re-open it eventually it will go back to normal. I've also had the screen freeze a few times for a few seconds while I'm using it.

I've hooked it up to my TV when it had the grey screen and it was working fine so I'm pretty sure it's the laptop screen. This doesn't happen all the time so if the solution is get a new screen I'll just live with it, but perhaps something simpler?

Answer:Laptop screen issue

My first guess would be the video card or driver but if you hook it to an external monitor and it is OK then it does point to the Laptop screen. Sometimes the ribbon cable from the Motherboard to the monitor can get loose or damaged. Not saying that is what it is tho.

There is no way to fix it the issue is whether it is serious enough to require that HP replace the screen. There is a "pixel policy" that governs the terms of the warranty. You need to contact HP Warranty Support to see if you can get a new screen.

Hi. I've had this laptop, a Dell Inspirion 1200, for a few weeks now. I usually either close the cover or put it into Hibernation when I'm done using it. I haven't jarred it, shocked it, or stepped on it.

Basically, I opened up the cover and hit power. While it was booting up, I looked away to do something, and when I looked back, the screen was covered in white vertical lines. I shut down the computer by holding down the power button, then rebooted. When it came up again, it was perfectly fine (no lines at all.)

Is this a fluke or something I should worry about in the future?

Peering at the screen, you can tell it's displaying. Sadly, it's only bright enough to see for a brief moment.

I'm running into the D-Sub on the TV and have the CRT/LCD setting to display on both the laptop monitor and the TV. TV is a clear picture and the laptop I'm guessing from reading I've been doing is lacking the backlight.

History: No updates have been done in the timeframe that the monitor issues surfaced. No drivers changed, no programs installed (except vaguely possibly ExamDiff and one or two portable apps (

A week or two ago, I noticed the screen seemed to be shadowed in one area but the shadow seemed to go away if you brightened the screen all the way. Also, the screen seemed to be flickering, like lightbulbs sometimes do before blowing, that really quick, irritating flickering. This didn't usually last long, maybe 30 seconds at the most and it would settle down, ditto the shadowing.

Now, if I switch between CRT/LCD options or press then release the little screen switch near the hinge (the one that turns off the monitor if you close the lid), I tend to get a very quick proper display on the laptop monitor before it goes dark again with the displayed information impossible to read.

The issue is the same through a hibernate and resume, brief flashes of a clear screen and then only the vague outline can be seen.

I was using my laptop yesterday afternoon, when the screen began to fail. I turned the laptop off because it had froze, and when I tried to turn it back on, it just continuously reboots and shuts off, and the screen will not come on.

I have tried plugging in an external screen, but it does not receive a signal from the laptop, nor will the external keyboard I have to use (laptop keyboard is broken, not important).

Is there any way I can get the laptop to work again without taking it to a repair shop, or does a certain part need to be replaced?

It could be one of several issues and from the sounds of it, would require a part replacement. Possibly the video card, but my best guess would be motherboard failure. I really wouldn't be able to tell for sure without further testing.

I seem to have broken my laptop. I was trying to hook it up to a tv with an HDMI cable. Following the advice on a website I went to "Adjust screen resolution" to try and find the tv as another device and enable that. However there was no other device, so I decided to play around a bit to see if I could get something to , this was my mistake. On one of the drop down menus under the resolution menu I managed to select something which created a second device in the box showing how many displays you have. I was pretty sure it wasn't the tv but thought I'd keep playing around and on one of the other drop down menus I selected something like "expand across both displays"...said soemthing like that, and then that's when the laptop went blank, still a backlight coming from it but nothing but black on screen. I restarted the laptop, the screen showed up the windows starting stuff then the desktop flickered on for barely a second then it went back to blank screen. I can only guess I've created an imaginary device with obviously no display and this is what it is showing now when it's blank.
Hope this makes sense to someone else, not sure it does to me, I really shouldn't mess about with technology.

I bought this laptop back in September-ish of 2014. It runs perfectly fine still and always has but the image on my screen has been a problem since probably December of 2014. I know that seems ridiculous for me to just now be bringing it up but I honestly dont use it that often and only for pleasure so I always put it off and forgot about it.

The screen basically flickers blue in certain spots. Corners of windows, icons, links, etc. Its almost as if it was highlighted... I am not sure what it is. Sometimes it randomly goes away but then comes back within a few days.

If i do a screen grab of the blue flickering it doesnt appear in the jpg. So i took a picture with my cell phone. I uploaded that pic as well as my system specs to this thread.

Anyone please help lol....Bestbuy within 10 minutes told me it would cost me $200 for a new screen without even doing anything besides comestically looking at the screen and laptop. HP has been beyond awful in their "support"

Just as the title states, my new bought laptop is extremely weird. I am currently having 2 issues, and yes I've searched already(even though its hard to search when this is so confusing)
1. Whenever sound is played on the laptop, WITH and WITHOUT HEADPHONES/MIC plugged in, the left side laptop speaker lets out a static sound for a while, and if a sound on the laptop ends, it ends after like 3-5 seconds.
2. The buggiest issue I am having, is my computer refusing to be the "actual" screen. What I mean by this is that if I screen capture my desktop, the lower maybe 1/6th of the bottom and the right side is cut off, the resolution being weird.
I.E If i stream, and capture a window, and my mouse is in the middle ON MY SCREEN, the stream will show my mouse cursor to the right and a bit below of where it should be in the middle.

Please help me, as I've already tried my laptop brand's customer service GIGABYTE, and Reddit, but to no avail, and GIGABYTE takes forever for them to respond to tickets, and all they ask for is if i installed anything, etc when I got the laptop, when the issue was from the beginning.

What I have tried:
Disable/Enabling NVIDIA/INTEL HD graphics cards
System Reformat
Updating drivers
Change resolution

Thank you for your time, and I pray that someone has a solution for me... this is extremely annoying

Answer:Hard to explain issue with Laptop and screen

Hi there

If you have tried a system format the chances are almost 100% hardware related.
You will have to take it back to the seller for inspection.

The will either repair the laptop or credit you.

This is the second time I've bought a new laptop in 2 weeks, because my old Dell's hard drive crashed.  The first replacement HP wouldn't connect to Wifi and Geek Squad couldn't help from the store, so just traded out for this new one, and that problem is solved.  I'm not sure if my Win 10 is 32 bit or 64 bit, BTW, and don't know if it matters for this issue.  I was on my laptop last night and the keyboard kept acting wonky--slow response and I'd have to hit a key a few times to get the letter/number to type at times.  Also, even though I hit the numlock key, it wouldn't stay locked.  Please tell me this is a quick driver reset.  I really don't want to go back to Best Buy again.

hi, i have an old compaq laptop running windows vista. just yesterday i was using it and i had to reboot it.. well when it booted back up and i signed in to my administrator acct..the screen turned to a solid yellow color. i can't see anything else on the screen besides the yellow. but when i sign into my kids acct, i can see the screen just fine. before all this happened, i was trying to uninstall the program called INTERNET DOWNLOAD MANAGER, which apparently had a bad key. i was trying to follow a youtube tutorial on removing the key from the .REG, and afterwards, i started having this problem. what could be causing this and how do i fix it.

Answer:yellow screen issue on compaq laptop

I'd try doing a system restore to see if that fixes it. Sounds like an issue with the registry entries you changed.

Hello, so I have this problem with my laptop screen, My laptop is a Dell XPS 15 and not even a month old. While I was reading an article online, I thought I heard a ding sound like what it makes when it asks me for administrative permission for a program to open or do certain functions and then the right upper corner and part of the right side of my screen dimmed. As if there is a shadow over it. When my laptop asks for administrative permission it generally does dim everything but the dialogue box that opens up but never have I ever seen it dim only a section of the screen and a window never opened asking me for permission for anything.

I tried resetting my computer and it changed nothing, I also tried changing my screen's brightness and the dimmed section does get brighter with the rest of my screen but it still stays a few shades darker than the rest of the screen. I do have a warranty that would cover any repairs and fixing that needs to be done but I am hoping it is something that can be easily fixed by myself because sending it in to be looked at, repaired and then returned could take a while and I obviously don't want to waste the time if somebody knows an easy fix to this. Thanks

Try booting into Safe Mode. Since that uses a generic display driver and runs minimal software I think if you get the same dimmed part of the screen you can be pretty confident that you want to get warranty service.

Hey all, I'm having a dilemma.

TLDR: my new Acer Aspire E 15 laptop has a messed up screen, should I get a refund and either finance a MacBook or find a used MacBook, or try to repair the Acer?

In mid march I bought a new laptop - an Acer Aspire E 15 from Amazon. A couple weeks ago I opened it and there was a big black spot on the screen with white lines coming from it. The laptop hadn't been dropped or even moved, I don't know what caused it. But reviews on amazon said other people had the same problem a month or two after buying the laptop.

I contacted amazon and they said I can return it for a refund. I contacted the seller and they said I could send it to them for repair. However, I use my laptop for work and couldn't go that long without it for them to fix it. When I contacted Acer about the warranty, they said that since the black spot is "finger shaped" (??) it's not covered under warranty. But it is so large that it's a real problem when trying to work, or even just generally use it.

So now I have to decide whether to get it repaired or get a refund and buy a new laptop. I'm leaning toward the latter. I really want a MacBook and was approved for financing from Apple.
However, my friend made the point that computers are kind of like cars in that they depreciate in value after you buy them. So is it really worth getting a new MacBook and financing it? Or should I look into getting a used one for cheaper? If I get a us... Read more

Had this Sager np2740 laptop and it has had lot of issues. When i first got it, it was great. Battery was good and everything. After having the laptop for a bit, my battery went bad. Had that Red X mark on it. I bought a new battery replacement which was expensive. Had to go to repair shop to install battery on laptop because you had to open laptop in order to put battery in.

After that, battery went bad and had that Red X mark ever since. Then recently my laptop flickers a lot the screen. Like rainbow color. Now theres a black line there. But if i move screen up or down, it goes green or yellow etc. The thing though is i connect my laptop to an external monitor so i dont have this issue with my main screen. Thus it would be impossible to use my laptop by itself because of the blurry lines.

Since I'm out of warranty... this is with xoticpc, what can i do about this case? Go to a repair shop and see what they can do about it? The thing is if i need a replacement part, wouldn't i need to order from sager/xoticpc for this issue? I have had nothing but issues with this laptop once the battery first ran out.

Answer:Laptop Flickering Screen And Huge Issue with Clicking

I also had another issue related to this. Earlier when i was trying to click on things on my laptop screen... it kept asking me if i want to delete this program from computer. Example i would left click on a program on my desktop or click on my pictures or documents.
I click no and then i had this message show up over and over again where I cannot X it out. Had to been like that message popping up over and over again. I assume this is related to the screen flickering? Example i would use my mouse and click on programs on my desktop or my documents etc left clicking it like normal. It would then have the popup are you sure you want to delete file and send to recycle bin. Basically i click no but that same message keep popping up over and over again. When i got control alt delete, you see it has like 50 processes that say program isn't responding or something like that. Only way to get rid of this is to restart my laptop or shutdown then start it up again.
And when i do restart laptop or close it and start up, it would have this message with black screen and have option to click Enter where it says Window 7. Like asking which program to start up. Does anyone know what this is?

Hello there, its the Celestial Crown Prince of Canada here.I've been a loyal user of HP Consumer-Level Laptops for 2 years. It seems that there is a screen display issue with my Laptop. For myself, this is the first time an issue of this kind has occurred. For some reason, during my current(well, now its my last) session, my screen went totally blank on me and turned black, as if the laptop was in an off sort of power state, however, the laptop power was still on and before the issue suddenly decided to happen in front of my very eyes, I had been using the laptop, and was even working on doing some coding...some of you may know me as the creator of the Celestial Crown System.ini Configuration File.Apparently, this is a known HP Laptop Issue, and I'm not sure if HP is actively focusing on fixing the issue so that it does not become an inconvenience to other HP Laptop users or buyers. Is there any known solution as to how to fix this sort of issue? This is very critical, and I was in the midst of trying to save the rest of my code in notepad to my desktop, but I would surmise that asides from the 2 files I was able to save, the rest would be gone unless I would be able to resume my last session which I highly doubt at this point. If anyone could please let me know as soon as possible, I would immensely appreciate it. ~CCPOC Benson Lam

I have a Dell Inspiron 17RSE laptop (the SE = special edition of the 17R (7720)). Lightning stroke the router which was connected to my laptop through an Ethernet cable. The laptop was off during the strike, but afterwards the router was fried and the laptop screen did not power on (or so I thought) when the laptop was powered on. I then connected an external monitor to the VGA out, and this works. The graphics card also seems to be picked up correctly inside speccy/HWMonitor/Everest and CUDA acceleration works inside Adobe Premiere Pro, so I guess I can rule out a fried GPU. The monitor Part Number is N173HGE L-11 rev.2 (ChiMei) --- and in Everest it says Manufacturer: HDKPVƒ173HGE --- As I said initially I thought the screen was completely blank, but upon shining a light on the screen I can see an image on the screen, just very faint (btw the display brightness is set to max). I then looked for the LCD power inverter, but realised the screen is a LED screen so there is no inverter. So I'm thinking it could be a burned out fuse near the LCD connector cable on the motherboard itself, or the LED backlight is burned out.
What do you think?
Other changes in my laptop state since the lightning strike:

1) the laptop seems to overheat when running Adobe Premiere Pro -- which is set to use GPU acceleration. Using HWMonitor it seems to be the CPU, not the GPU, that overheats and all 8 threads of the CPU... Read more

Hi allI?ve been experiencing problems with my Sony Vaio Laptop off and on for about 3 months (the laptop is 18 months old).Basically the screen goes blank for no reason when I?m on the internet, listening to music, working. The backlight is still on (I can adjust the brightness of the screen using shortcuts) and the laptop still runs (music still plays etc) but I can?t see the screen.I have found by hitting the space bar repeatedly can sometimes make the screen come back to life, but not always but I don?t know why this is happening.I contacted Sony and they said ?From what you describe it would appear that there could be an issue with a connection with the display. It may be necessary to arrange the collection for repair of the VAIO... To confirm if this is a hardware fault with the VAIO we would recommend that a full system recovery is carried out on the VAIO.? which basically means it goes back to factory settings, which is something I want to avoid as I haven?t backed up any songs, work, photos (I?m buying an external hard drive this week).Has anyone else come across this issue / has any insight how to overcome it?? I?d be grateful for any advice. I?m not very technical so go slow with me!Thanks in advance.

Answer:SONY Vaio Laptop Blank Screen Issue

from what Sony are saying it sounds like this may be a known build fault or loose wire problem. If this is the case returning the laptop to them would seem to be your only option. It always pays to back-up your work regularly, it's a good habit to get in to. You never know what might be waiting around the corner!?

I've owned my HP laptop for almost three years now, and up to this point it has worked great throughout it's use. Recently, it seems like the hinges to open and close my screen have been putting some stress on the screen frame. Every time I open my laptop up, I have to take about 5 minutes to open it carefully so the frame doesn't come loose on the bottom left corner. Closing it is an issue too, as I usually have to close my fingers on it to keep the frame from going loose, resulting in it coming loose despite my hardest efforts, in which case I have no choice but to close it and snap everything back into it's rightful place. I took my laptop over to Best Buy for their input, and the only thing they suggested was superguling the frame to the screen. I took their advice and tried it, letting it sit for 2 days open while it set. (You can never be too careful!) The superglue did nothing and my frame is still loose, and I now have an ugly line of superglue on the bottom of my screen that sets off my OCD every time I need to get work done. If anyone has any idea on how to go about fixing this situation, I'd appreciate it.Thanks!

The LCD screen on my laptop began to develop- a series of horizontal lines and over the course of two weeks it went from 3 or 4 lines to a total blurred white out making the screen completely unviewable.
I bought a replacement screen assembly and installed it and it appeared to work just fine. However once the remaining battery charge depleted, the laptop would not turn on and did not seem to charge. I tried the unplug, battery reset, hold power button combo but could not get the computer to power up.
I reinstalled the non-functioning screen and now the computer will power up - but I cannot see anything on the screen.
I wondered if it was something to do with the comp not recognising that the replacement screen was open. Has anybody got any advice or similar experience of this.
I'm cracking up a bit here as I thought it was solved but now it's not

Answer:Samsun Laptop screen replacement power issue

Assuming you tried powering up with the battery removed and that didnt work, did you remove the battery when you replaced the screen?
It seems likely that you have damaged the power circuitry on the motherboard.
Your theory about the laptop not recognising that the screen is open is reasonable but the wrong way around as it must have noticed that the screen was open as it continued to run until the battery went flat. Its usually the proximity of the screen to the laptop body that trips a reed relay that turns the laptop off.
Its possible that the reason why it powers up with the old dead screen is because being dead its not consuming any power but when you connect the new screen it refuses to power up because the power drain is too much for the damaged power circuitry.
Of course all of the above is supposition and the problem may be due to something entirely different.

Hello, I have a T520 with a docking station.  There is an external monitor connected to the VGA port in the docking station and I have the laptop set to only use the external monitor.  However, when I close the screen of the laptop and put the laptop to sleep, and then when I open the laptop again, the laptop monitor turns on and mirrors on the external.  So basically, I need to set it to only use the external every time the laptop starts up.   Is there any fix to keep the laptop screen off while it is docked? Thanks.

Answer:T520 External Monitor/Laptop Screen issue

I don't have a dock to test. But I would look at the setting for Action when closing the lid/cover. Hibernate, go to sleep would be the normal actioins. You'd want nothing to happen. Look into the choice and I believe that will resolve it. There may be a group for when DOCKED as notebooks had years ago. The settings would apply only to when Dockend and not undocked.

I picked up a Dell Inspiron 5000e laptop second-hand (Windows ME installed) and I'm trying to get it to work. There are two issues: screen and touchpad. I'm just focusing on the screen for now since I can plug in an external mouse. Here are the symptoms (I think they may all be related):

When I turn the laptop on, the LCD screen will not light up. If I press Fn + F8 to toggle CRT/LCD, the LCD screen will flicker briefly. If I hold a flashlight to the screen, I can still see a very dim image but the backlight refuses to stay on. However, if I plug in an external VGA monitor, then press Fn+F8 several times, the LCD screen will stay on. I can even unplug the ext. monitor and the LCD screen backlight will continue to stay on. I just need to plug in the ext. monitor at some point after power-up to get the backlight to stay on. Or, if I plug in the ext. monitor before power-up, the LCD screen backlight will come on and stay on from the start.
I have to try 3 times before I am successful to boot into Windows ME. The first time, I get Windows ME loading image for about 15 seconds then the screen goes dark (not off -- just black), then the hard drive stops accessing and nothing happens. I restart either with Ctrl+Alt+Del or by holding down power button, then I am given the option to boot into safe mode. I select "Normal" boot (not Safe Mode). The same thing happens a second time. The third time, I successfully boot into Windows. (Other times I booted into Safe Mod... Read more

Hi all. Is there any brilliance in the house? I hope so.

The inverter on my Acer Aspire 5103WLMi died after 13 months.

No probs. I bought a new one, put the machine together again and started it up. Perfect... well almost.

What is happening now is that I cannot get maximum brilliance from the screen. All the Windows option settings are set to the max and the are no other user settings available I can make to chance this.

Ok you'll be thinking there is an issue with the inverter but I'm far from sure that it is. The picture is perfect apart from this issue.

Booting up Vista will have the screen bright and brilliant (max brill). Windows will continue to load and then as the machine continues to load the registry and gets to the bit where the screen brilliance is set the screen will dip and settle to about 75-80% of it's capable brilliance. I feel sure this is a registry issue because of the boot up procedure which is clockwork and 100% predictable.

Where can I inspect the reg to find these settings? They must be there.

Other suggestions?

Many thanks.

Answer:Brilliance issue after screen inverter replacement on Acer Laptop

Are there really no takers on this?? How dissapointing.

For those that don't know what an inverter is. inverters create a hi voltage charge and light the screen bulb(s) on your laptop or monitor. When it don't work you will see a perfect but dark n unlit image on your screen.

Ok, basically here is my problem.

My screen brightness won't go above 70 on the brightness bar slider.

The reason I know my screen can be brighter is because this JUST started happening recently. (well like three months, but I haven't had time to deal with it until now)

And anyway- heres 'symptoms'

The Windows Mobility doesn't allow the slider to go more than 70

Doing FN + F7 for screen brightness to increase using Toshiba hotkeys thing it doesn't go brighter. (it works but not more than 70)

Right as I am restarting right as it boots up it is much brighter then after like a minute it goes to the 70 brightness mark.

It hasn't always done this.

Is this purely hardware issue with Toshiba? Is this like preventing the screen from being 'too' bright?

How can I get it to 100? On restart right before it dims the screen is much much nicer / brighter... It would be nice to have it brighter all the time..

I could do a system re-install... but I'm right in the middle of my school year and I don't really have time at this time...

Thanks for ideas and help.

Hello Folks,

Trying to fix my friends laptop but running into a weird issue.

Using Windows Vista Home Premium
Graphics Card is Standard Intel 945

When booting windows normally I get a solid blue screen (not BSOD) after the login screen. Boots into safemode normally.

Clean for viruses/malware

Tried the following:

1) Plugged in an external monitor (VGA Port) and it brought up a display window on pc showing it was currently in multiple monitor mode (still blue screen in backround). Blue Screen on monitor as well. Switched to Single Display and now just blue screen on laptop display. Connected to TV with S-Video. Blue screen on TV as well.

2) Changed Resolution as well as 16 bit/32 bit color. No Effect.

3) Uninstalled/Reinstalled Graphics Driver. No Effect.

4) Tried creating guest account and logging in normally. Won't get past login screen. Just continuously loading.

Any suggestions?
Thank You in Advance for any ideas.

Sorry, I can't help fix your issue, but I wanted to let you know that you are not alone!  We have 7 Elitebook 840 G3's wth Windows 10 on the 2013 UltraSlim Dock as well, and they are all doing the same thing.  Both external displays will go black for a few seconds periodically throughout the day.   We are using HP EliteDisplay E242 displays for all except one user, who has ASUS displays, and they all have the same issue, so the display itself does not appear to be the issue. The VGA port seems to work fine, so this points to the Display Ports/driver being the issue.  I have tried all available driver updates, but nothing has resolved the issue. We are looking for a solution to this issue as well.

I've ran some programs in compatibility mode and it seems to have fixed most of my blue screen issues, but I still get the blue screen of death maybe once every two days; I'm new here so I'm not really sure where to begin. Also as I I have another account on my laptop named John, and it keeps coming back after I delete it. This isn't really a big problem I guess, but it's odd. I feel like there's something wrong with my laptop, and hopefully I can fix it here.
