Recover Deleted External Hard Drive Files

Question: Recover Deleted External Hard Drive Files

I recently download a backup program that deleted everything off my external hard drive. There is now basically nothing on my external, so I doubt any data was overwritten. I have a Western Digital 800BB External USB 2 with FAT32. I've tried almost every program I can get a freeware/trial version of and haven't had any luck. A few of them have shown me some of the files I am interested in but are missing quite a few I want. I've also tried restoring a few .avi files that did show up and all I get is a bunch of my mp3 files oddly strung together. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Recover Deleted External Hard Drive Files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Is it possible to recover deleted files from an external hard drive or flash memory? If so, can someone explain how this is possible? I thought that once you had deleted a file, that was it..?

Not with certainty. It's hit and miss. Don't count on it.

"Deleting" in effect removes the file from the drive's "index" so it can't be found by standard means.

Specialized software may still be able to locate and recover the file if that space on the hard drive has not actually been overwritten and occupied by another file.

Recuva and GetDataBack are two such programs.

Some free software will tell you if the file can be recovered, but may make you pay to actually recover it.

The original file name may be lost.

Then there are professional data recovery services that examine the drive in a laboratory for a high fee--$1000 or more. Such services may have a higher degree of success.

I've fiddled with the free software a few times, but never had much luck.

Answer:Can I Recover Files Deleted On a External Hard Drive?

Hi

You should be able too, so long as you have not been saving more files to that exHDD as the more files you save the less likely it is that you will recover what you want, as you delete a file its flagged up as an empty block to the OS but the data is still their (caveat to this is if you use secure deletion apps) so can be recovered, that is until the data block is needed.

So try the following apps

Recuva
PC Inspector File Recovery

Do remember not to save the recovered filed to your external drive during recovery, save them to your C Drive.

If you are using the likes of Vista or Windows 7 then try right clicking the folder or drive the deleted folder was in and choose Properties > Previous Versions tab and look to see for a backup of before the folder was deleted and then double click that date to open then navigate to the folder you need and rigth click copy and paste to your desktop.

Pervious Versions is good tool but doesnt always work in XP or for external drives but worth a try.

Hello, I am having issues with my external hard drive. I cannot access the drive from computer or device manager. I do see the icon for the drive listed but any left or right-click freezes explorer. The drive is a 1TB Iomega USB drive. I have tried to run chkdsk on it but it will not run. I do not have access to another computer at this time to see if the drive works elsewhere.

2 things : I have gotten a popup on startup that I need to reformat the drive to be able to use it AND I have also seen the cyclic redudancy check error box. After searching for answers I believe the problem may have been caused by 1 or more instances of power loss to drive while connected to my desktop pc.

Any help retrieving my files & photos would be greatly appreciated!

When I plugged the hard drive back into the tablet to restore the file, I am getting the following error message: :L/ is unavailable, the location is unavailable and it advises to make sure the drive is connected / plugged in....which it is. Is there anyway to restore the files???!!

Answer:Restoring deleted files to external hard drive!!!

use this recovery software called recuva. free and small. can also be used from a usb.
http://filehippo.com/download_recuva/

read the info on the side of the download page about recovery options.
also, its important not to use the external drive.. until running a scan with recuva, as the data may be lost.

Hello!

I work on a laptop and a desktop. I use an external 320 GB hard disk to save my files.
The laptop is running windows 7 home basic 64 bit (more than 2 years old) and The desktop is running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit (recently installed with formatting new pc).
The problem is..
If the HDD connected to the desktop and I delete any file from the HDD, the file appears in the recycle bin of the desktop but as I connect the HDD in laptop the files are not appear under recycle bin of the laptop. Likewise any file deleted from HDD appears in recycle bin of the laptop when the HDD connected to the laptop but not appears in the recycle bin when connected to the desktop.
Is it normal? I do not think so. If it is a problem then how can I correct it. I have tried windows troubleshooting -- performance check , HDD error check but no error can be find out in both computers.

Wish for your helpful suggestions.

Answer:Recycle bin not showing deleted files for an external hard drive

I think this is quite normal if I have read your post correctly. When you delete a file from your external HD the deleted file get transferred to the Recycle Bin of the computer you are using. When you change the external HD to your laptop then there is no record of those files as they have already been deleted & would still be the Recycle Bin of desktop, unless you have deleted them from there.

Hi All,

My brother accidently deleted all of my photos which were stored on an external hard drive when syncing the drive to the computer. Don't ask how!

I was wondering what is the best software program or method to retrieve the deleted files. I appreciate I probably won't be able to get them all but there were 100s so I'm hopeful.

If anyone knows any free software out there that could do the job can you please recommend one that will work?

Thanks

Hi there,

Usually any computer problems I can fix myself but this one has me stumped. The virus scanner I am using is Avast and the firewall I'm using is Windows Firewall. My operating system is XP Service Pack 3. Yesterday with breakfast I clicked into my "Downloaded" folder on my external hard drive to find the folder was empty except for a file called "myfile.exe." Where this has come from and how it was not picked up or recognised as a virus is unknown. I used these forums to try and solve the problem trying everything from "unhide.exe" to the recommended malware programs and followed pretty much every procedure but to no avail. The space from the files has still be taken up on the harddrive and show hidden files is checked etc. It only seems to be that folder that has been effected. The contents of the folder itself are all video files, tv shows and movies. If anyone can help it will be much appreciated!

Answer:myfile.exe virus deleted files in only one folder on external hard drive?

I seem to have found the files, they were moved from the original folder into a neibouring folder. It still doesn't explain the myfile.exe however. *edit* I have however also noticed that the computer is taking longer on start up along with the general speed of the computer and firefox is hanging regularly.

I seem to have lost an entire folder from my personal flash drive containing all of my household budget/income/finances information!

I plug this USB drive mostly into my computer at work, which is on a huge network and very protected by our IT department, meaning I don't have administrator priveleges on the machine/can't install anything and probably can't recover anything.

I hesitate to ask for our IT department's help becuase they are... uh... not very helpful even when it's work-related. :-(

Where could my files have gone??!! They are not in my deleted folder. Can I get them back??

Help!!!

Answer:Solved: How do you recover files deleted from a flash drive?

You'll probably need to install some data recovery software. If this is your personal drive then you can do the recovery at home where you should be able to install software to run a recovery.

That is just not right for them to do. They formatted your external HDD into an 8gb partition?
Anyway, try this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Undelete_Plus_d5301.html
Make sure not to write any more information to the external HDD until you are done retrieving information, as any info written may over-write something you are trying to recover. Good luck!

I deleted a folder with about 30 gigs of stuff in it from my 500 gig external hard drive about a week ago. I haven't done anything else with the drive since then. The folder was too large for the recycle bin so windows just automatically deleted it. I've tried recovering the files with Recuva and Puran File Recovery, but neither of them have been able to locate the files. Does this mean I will not be able to get them back, or is there something else I can try?

Heya everyone.

I have a second hard drive in my desktop stored for media stuff ( three folders, pictures, music and videos).
I had a folder that I wanted to move from my portable hard drive to my desktop media hard drive so I used the cut paste command (crtl+x, ctrl v) to put it in there but after it was finished, my videos folder was deleted. I don't remember getting a warning message about the deletion or any pop ups. The folder from my portable hard drive has moved successfully but now my videos folder is gone and I even can see that it made more room for my media storage now.

There is no previous version when I go into my second hard drive properties. How can I recover my videos folder back or get back to the last state?
Thanks for reading

Help!!!!!!!

This evening I did a very stupid thing. When I plugged in my external hard drive, I got a message saying that I needed to reformat it. Without thinking, I clicked yes and allowed the darn computer to start erasing my data. As soon as I realized what I had idiotically done, I had another lapse of judgment and unplugged the external hard drive in the middle of the process.

Now I have a hard drive that is still 80% full and no way of reaching the data… Anytime I try to open the drive, I get a message saying it’s inaccessible.

Is there any way for me to recover some of the data still on the drive????

Any advice y'all could give would be muchly appreciated.
Thanks!!

I got a friend calling me because he made a program for this Doctor using MS Access 2003, the program was running on a external hard drive since september last year. Suddenly all the data was missing, he checked and the software created was intact and working perfectly. The one thing he found strange was the date. The hard drive said that the data was last updated at September 2007, which is weird because this data was constantly changing until last week.

If someone out there knows a way of getting that data back, please leave a respond.

Any help will be much appreciated!!!

PD: The backup is no where to be found.

Hi
I have a 320 GB Hitachi HDD Media Player which I use to store a number of media files and the other day whilst trying to add files to it from my pc it found an error and ever since then I haven't been able to access the drive on my pc as it says it needs to be formatted (I know this means deleting everything on there). I do not wish to format the drive as I wish to keep the files that are on the drive. I know the files are still on there because I can hook the drive up to my TV and view them, I am only restricted access on pcs. Is there anyway of taking the files off the HD so I can format it and then put them back on together with any new files I wish to add? or am I screwed and have to resort to getting a new HD simply using the original HD for viewing through the TV?

Please advise.

Thank you

Answer:Recover data from external hard drive

Hi

Which Windows Version?

What error did it find?

Try a different USB port to plug it into and remove any other none needed USB hardware ( printer, USB Pens and any other USB HD ), also check Disk Managment in Computer Managment for it being listed, if it is it may just have lost a drive letter as its taken by another storage hardware device, so right click and choose Chaneg Drive Letter and Path, and choose XYor Z as the letter.

If you are using any tweaking apps like TweakUI check they are not hiding drive letters, its a tweak in hiding them to give a minor gain to the speed of a system.

Try hooking it back up to your PC and hopefully if the drive is recognised in My Computer try this free recovery app, Recuva

Scenario: My cousin just bought an HP MINI 1030NR from good 'ol Best Buy. He wanted to put a flavor of linux on there (dreamlinux to be exact, http://www.dreamlinux.com.br/index.html). He downloaded the iso file from the website and planned on installing it onto his ntfs-formatted external hard drive (80gb). The problem is that he accidentally installed the distro on the entire hard drive, as opposed to a separate partition. As a result, he has lost all of his data, images, videos, docs, etc (about 32GB). Is there any way that he can recover this information off of his external hdd? I am pretty sure that linux reformats the hdd to ext3 or something similar, so i don't know if there is any hope because usually reformating completely wipes the hard drive if I'm not mistaken.NOTE: Now when he plugs in his external hard drive, it shows up as a cd-rom image (see attached image). I have tried the recovery program Recuva, but it only seems to recognize hdd's and won't let me scan the "CD-ROM." I am using teamviewer to check out his pc at the moment, in case any of you experts need more info about the pc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. Please let me know if you need any more pertinent information.EDIT: I have attached another image from his pc's Disk Management utility. It shows DISK 1 as being the actual hard drive with almost the full hdd available, AND it shows the cd-rom as something separate.

Answer:Is it possible to recover data from reformatted external hard drive

He most likely can....BUT... itll cost ALOT of money. The hard drive will most likely have to be shipped to a professional with a dust free environment where he will open the drive and pull info from it.

If it is reformatted the information is most likely written over and gone, but ya never know, if he has about 800-1500 to dump on a hard drive, go for it, but I would just assume it is gone.

Hello, i am facing a very disturbing problem right now... On my external hard disk, i tried moving a folder that contained all my important files into the hidden folder named $RECYCLE.BIN.... this was successful, but in my quest to secure the folder more, i tried moving it into one of the folders named "S-1-5-21-3653930289-2530686896-918681669-1001", this was beginning to take a long time so i pressed Cancel. Only to find the folder missing, And i cant open the above named folder for access.... While checking the hard disk property and diskspace, it shows that the folder is still occupying its space.. I tried undoing the move but i still cant find it... any help??

Hi all,
I recently bought a WD My Book Essential Edition external hard drive and wanted to change it from FAT32 to NTFS. I was following instructions given on WDs website, however the directions weren't entirely clear (of course only noticed after the fact). I right clicked on My Computer, clicked manage and used Disk Manager. The instructions said to find the drive, right click on it and click delete partition. It didn't mention however, to do that with bottom part of the screen and not the top. So, I think I just deleted the logical drive.

It shows up on the device manager and the "Safely Remove Hardware" window, but the drive letter no longer shows up under My Computer.

Is there a way to fix this? Or did I just buy a $120 paper weight?

Thanks,

PaveFE

Help!

Ok, a few weeks ago, I got enraged with my laptop ( Fuj-Siem Amilo Pro) and thumped it with my hand (right near the lower center - presumably where the hard drive is?) and well, it froze up -after reboot and I got some BSOD(blue screen of death) message.. Anyways, I ran the recovery console, recovered about 70% of my files with chkdsk /r (after 21 hours!) and though it did not complete, it still rebooted and I was able to boot windows and use my computer.. so, after two days of successful startups, I was trying to repair and re-install the files that were not recovered, (like MS office stuff, Itunes, etc) when it froze - and I waited for 25 minutes before I had no choice but to turn off at the mains.. I turned the power back on when I got a "disk read error press alt ctrl etc" and have sincxe tried everything you can do in recovery console to sort it; fixmbr, fixboot, chkdsk ( said it was fine) chkdsk /r/p - every command relative to the situation when running the recovery console before, the DOS recognized my windows installation ( C: 1Windows) now it just says C:> or something like that.

I went to buy an external hard rive USB ( Maxtor 120GB) and want to know how I can get the files on this USB drive. I need to get that DATA back - and the Recovery console is not going to repair again - (stays a 6% for 24 hours) and I just want to get this stuff off somehow onto the HDD.

Answer:Recover data from dead HD and dump on to external hard drive

try getting your hands on a 'live cd' like Ubuntu or something.

you have to boot your system from the disc, usually by pressing an 'f' key as soon as you press the power button (on my tosh its f12). then select boot from cd, instead of from the hard drive.

you will probably need to have your external drive attached before you start in order for the 'live OS' to recognise it.

then you should be able to view and perhaps even copy your files to the external hdd. you should even be able to format the original hard drive from here too, then you can re-install windows.

lastly try an anger management course. this really was a bit of a rookie error, wasn't it?

After internal Hard Disk crash in ThinkPad W520 I tried to recover back-up content from external HD.  Most programs recovered properly, However the Netobjects Fusion 12 Program and Data Files did not recover. Tried to do it manually and message "zugriff verweigert" (Access denied) appeared.  How can I override message? Or How can I back load the mentioned program from the external Back-up HD?

I am having a weird problem with lots of jpg files that I deleted months ago and emptied the recycle bin dozens of times since deleting the files, those are mysteriously reinstated into their original folders on the external drive!! all they are are jpg files that after I print them, I delete them permanently. but after about 3 - 6 months those files are back into the folders!! running Windows 7 Ultimate

Answer:Deleted files come back all my themselves on External Drive

Run a full scan with Malwarebytes on all drives, followed by SuperAntiSpyware - decline the trial versions to just use the scanners.

Then move the data off the external and wipe it with Diskpart Clean Command, repartition in Disk Mgmt.

If these fail work through the Troubleshooting Steps linked in my signature pic below, reporting back results.

I have Toshiba Satellite, in case that matters. I have drive C, D, E of course. I also have 2 external hard drives. G is for movies only. F is for backup. Anyway, yesterday I noticed that the letter F wasn't showing when I clicked on Computer. I went into Disk Management and tried to assign a letter but I saw 3 G letters. One was fine but the other two confused me. I tried to change each one but the letter F was missing. In frustration I deleted that drive. Well, now I can't get it back. What do I do? BTW, I see the two externals in Device Manager and I think I see one in MiniTool Partition but the drive in question is marked as Unallocated.
Can you help me? All my important backups are on there.

installing a new hard drive, i wanted to wipe my old drive clean and deleted my external
hard drive. I assume all that was deleted was the boot. I have already given it a letter so the system sees the hard drive but nothing else. PC inspector is running in the background trying to find the lost files, but i was wondering if theres anything else i can do.

Answer:Solved: Deleted external hard drive accidently

Might depend on how you deleted it. What type of wipe was it?
Probably the only thing you can try at this time is recovery programs but some are a little better at recovery depending on how the files were deleted or lost, but if the files were deleted in any sort of secure manner they may be gone for good.

GetDataBack (http://www.runtime.org/) would be another good one to try, and only need to pay for it if it can recover the data.

while organizing my pictures, i hit upon the idea of deleting all photos under 100k since i was having trouble with way to many pictures and was trying to organize them.

Seems i deleted in those images the Icon of my external hard drive (Western digital 500gb). The drive SEEMS to me to be much slowwwer since then- but i see no way to change the icon under properties (as you can for a folder.)

so, my question is:

how do i fix this slowness issue? and do you think that the icon deletion is in fact what caused it? i now get a slow, haning external (although it comes around eventually...)

(i don't care so much for the fact that my icon is gone if that's not causing the problem.)

Thanks!

Answer:I Deleted my External Hard Drive Icon- and now it's slow!

I don't see deleting the icon as the cause.

I'd be more worried it has an error, right click on the drive and go to Properties and Tools to run a Disk Scan on it, make sure to check the box to scan and fix errors too.

You can also check the drive for a hardware failure with the WD diagnostics: http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp?cxml=n&pid=999&swid=3

And try something as simple as plugging it into a different USB port.

Unplug and re plug in the external drive while you are in Disk Management and see if an unknown device appears. You can also leave it plugged in and restart you computer. Do you get the "bing, Bong" USB connection sounds?

I've been trying for 3 days to rescue my files from my hard drive and so far this is what I've tried.

-Windows is an infinite loop diagnosing and repairing on start up saying it's trying to fix disk errors.
-I jump into safe mode but that doesn't help it does the same thing.
-I open up a cmd from recovery mode, the only drives I can access are D, E, F, G, H, and X but it does detect the C drive.
-I just can't access it, I get a I/O error when I just to run commands on that drive.
-I tried repairing the RMB boot(I think that's what it's called?) That didn't work.
-I boot into linux and try to force mount the drive but I get an error saying that I need to disable Hybernate/fast boot to be able to mount it.
-Jump back into recovery mode and open up a command prompt and try to run the command "powercfg /h off",
it says powercfg isn't a command.
-I run the "Dir" on "X:/Windows/System32" but most of the system32 files are gone
along with the one that allows me to run the "powercfg" command.
I've also tried using a restore point but there aren't any and I've also tried refreshing the pc but that doesn't seem to be working either.

I'm at a lose and I really just want to rescue my files.

My last idea was to install windows on an external HDD and try to see if I can rescue my files within windows.

Any ideas would be really appreciated and I'm willing to try anything ... Read more

Hey everyone,

I'm hoping you can help me recover data from my laptop hard drive. The machine is a Dell purchased in 2006, the drive is a 100g seagate IDE. The drive has a (somewhat) recent WinXP SP3 install. The information that wasn't backed up from the drive is priceless - the drive itself I don't care about.

Two days ago, I performed a windows defrag on my laptop. Once completed, the system was running extremely slowly - taking 30 seconds to open folders, etc. I rebooted, and encountered the same problem. Realizing something was very wrong, I attempted to start getting important files off the machine - but it crashed. Following that, I began getting BSODs. They give the error "Unmountable_Boot_Volume". I immediately purchased an external hard drive USB adapter, hoping I could save the files and format the drive. When I hook my laptop hard drive up to a second laptop (running Vista), Windows recognizes the drive, but can't browse it or anything else, and the Vista machine begins to struggle and pause when the drive is connected. Vista eventually says that the disk must be formatted before it can be used, which of course I don't want to do.

While connected via USB, I tried a couple of data recovery programs, PC Inspector File recovery and VirtualLab. Both gave NTSC read errors during the process, and one of them was eventually able to locate deleted files on the disk - unfortunately, I'm not looking for any of the files that had alr... Read more

A friend has a computer that will not start up properly and she has given it to me to try to recover some files that she needs. Although I can't verify it yet I think that she has a virus or something - on start up it trys to connect to the net and when it can't it reboots.

She and I have the same make and model computers running Windows XP Home. My question is this: Can I pull her hard drive out and connect it as a slave on my computer so that I can access the files she needs? It seems like that should work, but I don't want to do something that would compromise my computer.

On my family's oldest computer (a Dell Dimension 8200, running Windows XP), we have recently gotten an error message that reads as follows.

"WARNING: Dell?s Disk Monitoring System has detected that drive 0 on the primary EIDE controller is operating outside of normal specifications. It is advisable to immediately back up your data and replace your hard-disk drive by calling your support desk or Dell Computer Corporation.

Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility."

Now, it says to back up the files immediately, but when I try and start up the computer, it takes forever but can get to the User Accounts screen (where you choose as whom you want to log in). When you select someone, it crashes and reboots. In my opinion, this computer is so out of date that we should just get rid of it, but my dad still thinks there are documents that he wants to save. I'm trying to just get the files off this machine and stored somewhere (on a different network computer or external hard drive on the network), but I can't access the files from anywhere.

I have the recovery console option or safe mode, but I have never used either of these, so I don't want to mess things up further. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Hello!

We have two computers in my house... One day the older computer stopped booting past bios and since we had the other one, we didn't care... The problem is that we think that it stopped working because of the hard drive. When we pluggled the hard drive into my computer, it also woulnd't go past bios. Now, I am not very sure if we installed it right... It wouldn't show anything at all if it wasn't installed right, correct? Anyways...The hardrive (a WD Cavier Blue - WD800BB) has tons of pictures of my baby that I would be devastated to lose, and since I have no idea how to retrieve those pictures, I am here for help.

The hard drive doesn't make any clicking noises, which means that it probably doesn't have physical problems (I read that somewhere) Sooo... what do I do?

Sorry I don't have much information to give. I have no idea what kind of information you guys need or where to find it. I don't have very much knowledge when it comes to hardware, so please use "dummy language" with me, Thanks!

Answer:Hard drive not booting, need to recover files

I'm sure you didn't mean to write "pluggled", but I think it's great word.
What's the make and model of your computer?
This is a PATA drive, so the jumpers must be set correctly. Slave or Cable select should work if it's on the same channel as the other HD.
Do know if the HD is spinning?

I am using windows 7 ultimate.
Today I booted the computer and it went to a message that said preparing desktop. After windows loaded the normal software was present, but my customized links were gone and the default background was present. My files that were in my normal user folders were not present, but were later located in the users/username folder. I moved some of these folders to the desktop as that is where they had previously done. In the users folder there were 3 folders (public, my username and whatever the new default user was called). When I restarted the computer everything came back to normal, except the folders of files I had placed on the new desktop. I went into the user folder, but it only had my current user and the public folders.

How do I recover the files from the desktop from the random corrupted profile that windows created which I can not manually log into? I searched for the files and the last record of them is linked to my user and says the shortcut is not valid. I tried a system restore and that did not help at all.

Thanks!

Does anyone know of any good software to recover lost files from a hard drive?

I have a drive which was booting properly before, running XP that began to hang indefinitely during the boot process. The bios recognizes the drive, but the OS doesn't appear to load from the disk. No messages are displayed, it just hangs. If I boot from another HD with the 'problem' drive as a slave, the problem drive is reported as being unformatted.

I need to see if I can recover any files from the drive, and check the drive to see if the drive is worth saving.

Can anyone recommend any disk utility software bootable from a floppy which can do this?

Thanks

My mom is so distraught!!! Here's what happened:

My nimrod of a dad (whom I love dearly) thinks he knows all there is to know about computers (including fixing them). Really, all he knows is how to mess with the settings, then he tries to fix whatever he did, and makes it worse. My mom then calls me, and I go and spend a few hours fixing what my dad "fixed" in the first place. Except this time.

My mom was out, and my dad was trying to "fix" one of his mistakes. The screen froze on him, so he shut it down, and started it back up. He then decided it would be best to just erase the entire hard drive and start from scratch. And, no, he didn't back ANYTHING up!!!

Both my mom and dad are computer illiterate. My mom has no problem admitting this, but you'll never hear my dad say it! I've given them things to do on a weekly/monthly basis, including step by step instructions. One of these things is backing up the hard drive. They've never done it! My mom used to, but when they got a new computer (a couple years ago), my dad lost the instructions on how to do it.

So, all of my moms stuff (including hundreds of photos) is gone (my dad just uses the internet and screws up the settings). Is there ANY way to recover what was erased, or is she just screwed?

Thanks in advance,
Keri

Answer:Satellite L40: How do I recover files from Hard Drive

Hi

This messages looks like an warning notification from the S.M.A.R.T.
It does mean that your HDD will eventually fail.
It could happen next days or it may not happen for a few months but the SMART capability has detected that the drive is going bad so it should be replaced as soon as possible.
It looks like your notebook is not very old so the warranty should cover all replacements.

I see only one way to access and backup the data. Possibly you could buy an external USB SATA HDD enclosure and could connect the HDD to another computer.
I?m not sure if you will be able to access the HDD due to the malfunction but if you want you could try this.

Good luck

Hi guys. My friend's sister managed to spill some alcohol on her laptop, basically killing it. Now she wants her pictures from the hard drive. I have the hard drive in a caddy plugged into my computer. When I try to access it, Windows says I need to format the drive. What're my options for recovering data off it?

Answer:Recover files of damaged hard drive

I know many ways to recover files but first are you sure that the spillage did not affect the Hard Drive?
Some ways involve spending some money, which I'm sure you want to avoid it.

#1 Download Test Disk for windows on your desktop >unxip > look for testdisk_win.exe. Click create a new log, right after this you will see all Hard Drives...highlight the one you are interested click proceed > click Intel > click analyze at this point you will or will not see partition on your hard drive. Hello,I have in my possession a hard drive that the recovery program had been run on, in error. It formatted over hundreds of Word and Excel documents as well as Outlook emails etc. So, I am trying to recover them.I ran PC Inspector File Recovery program and it found hundreds of files, the folders were green in color, meaning the chances of success of recovery were good. I recovered some Word documents. They appear normal, but when I open them they are all encrypted, or at least look like they are. I was offered the opportunity to change the way Word reads them, but none of the settings worked. Then I ran DataRecovery program. It found 37,000 recoverable files. When I recovered an Excel file the icon looked perfectly normal. Here is a screenshot:When I open the file, it looks like this:Any ideas?

Answer:How Do I Recover Files If The Hard Drive Has Been Formated?

After running into a similar issue myself at onetime, you need to find and obtain the Personal key Certificate you used when you made these encrypted files, and then install it in trusted certificats on your PC to be able to decrypt the files. If you already have that personal key, and the old SID of the machine, you could use a program like NEWSID to recreate the environment - and then decrypt them using the cypher command while logged on as an administrator. I used to have a link to some pages explaining how to do this, but since I back up my keys now - after that one time, I discarded them.

A friend of mine's hard drive was damaged so I replaced it and installed Windows XP on the new Hard drive. This was fine and no problem. In an effort to salvage some of his files from damaged hard drive I connected it as slave and windows recognised it with out a problem.

Now the tricky bit! I was able to access "My Documents" on the old HD but when I tried to open his folder(for his profile) I got an "Access denied" message. He then told me that he had a password on his previous windows profile. Since Windows is not booting from this HD and I don't have an option to enter a password, is there a way to access this folder?

I hope someone can help me.

Thanks

i try to backup my laptop data using system image recovery.. In the process, the system told me that 'the backup could take up to 16 GB of disc space.' So, i just create another partition (17 GB) on my external hard disc as a backup location. The process went smoothly. But unfortunately, all my external hard disc partition has been deleted and there is only one partition (RECOVERY 31.9GB ) that include recovery data is created.. Is it any way that i can apply to get back my deleted partition?

Answer:System image recovery has deleted my external hard drive partition

Hi Fuadansari

Can you please tell us the manufacturer and the model of the hard drive that was overwritten.

I've done that process so I think that I understand what happened. Is it an Acer laptop?

The most important thing at this point is that you DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING TO THE AFFECTED DRIVE. That means do not format it or do anything that may alter the data that is currently on it.

My friend has been using AutoCAD on fairly new Windows 10 install. No problems till today when he got an error stating he needed to reinstall the OS. I didn't see the error before he shut down. To be safe he pulled his hard drive and asked me to backup his personal files using a USB enclosure, before reinstalling OS.No problem right? I've done this for other people many times in older OSs, but this is the first time I've seen Windows 10 file structure. I plugged in the drive and found that I can't access files in the OS partition. I can't crack it. Basically, it can't get the rights to see files there. I actually plugged the enclosure into an old XP computer I had laying around and was able to see some folders and files, but no personal files.
Can any of you help me understand where his files are located on the drive and how I can access them?
Thanks!

I will start off by saying that I have 3 hard drives, a 60gig (Main HD with windows), a 40gig (Old HD used for Storage) and a 160gig (Music, Pictures and Video Projects). A couple days ago my computer froze and when I started it up again it said it was missing a important windows file. I ended up reinstalling windows then reformatting and installing windows again. There is nothing wrong with my 40gig and my 60gig is now clean with only windows, however I have lost access to my 160gig. It comes up in device manager and says its working but I does not come up in Disk Defrag or management. I'm very confused on what to do and help would be very appericated. I have a lost of time I invested in the 160 gig and I hate to see all the data i've worked so hard on being lost. Any idea on how I can possibly get the HD working again or at least recover the files before I have to reformat? Please Help!!!!!

Ok, in my excitement and haste, I managed to format and install an OS on the wrong hard drive...

Long Story Short:

I used to be on 2 hard drives. a 250gig primary and a 300gb data HD. I had thousands and thousands of songs, videos, pics, and software on the 300 gig, and somehow when I went to format my new 1tb drive, managed to select the wrong drive instead; I lost everything and didn't realize it until it was done.

I was told by a buddy that there are programs for retrieving lost files and formatted hard drive. I have tried a few, but they all, including EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard, find all the files the New OS installed, rather than what was there beforehand.

For the specific purpose of not overwriting the files that are still there, I haven't used it since, aside from installing programs on my new 1tb drive and trying to use them to salvage the data.

1) Is it possible to do what I'm trying to do, now that I've installed a new OS?
2) What software would you recommend I acquire in order to do it?
3) Anything else?
Thanks so much!!!

Eric

Yesterday, I cleared the directory "Search Results" thinking it was a directory with only references to files, and not files themselves (such as the "Recent" file). When I noticed it started deleting 100k+ files (22 GB), I canceled it as I began to grow suspicious. For some reason, only a handful of files were in the recycle bin, so I restored those files thinking that my computer would return to its original state. To my surprise, I realized that there were several folders on my computer (C: drive) that were completely empty. Somehow the files in those folders were deleted and did not get restored properly. I tried utilizing the Windows System Restore and by choosing a restore point from several days back, yet the files that I deleted were simply gone. Is it possible for me to restore my hard drive to a previous date/time completely? This means that files that didn't exist before the date won't exist after the restore. If it is not possible on Windows alone, is there software that you can redirect me to? I have seen software that has done something similar to what I want, except it only allows individual files, while I would like a full drive restore. In case you all are wondering, I have yet to back up my hard drive (I'm using a fairly new computer) in any way.

Cheers,

Percy

This should really be known as "Windows Operating System Restore" -- as that is what it does. When it makes updates to system files (as in the registry when you install an app), it saves off the current version of every file it changes. When you later do a restore, all it does is overwrite the current file with the one that it saved. It is not a "time machine" that will reset the entire system back to an older date.

This is what an image backup/restore does -- it makes a complete backup of an entire partition at a certain time. When you later restore from that backup, it returns the partition to the state it was in when the backup was taken. However, you have to do the image backup BEFORE you can do the restore.

When I delete a file my hard drive it doesn't decrease space. Instead it keeps telling me my hard drive space is full when I know that's not the truth. I've tried going into safe mode and scanning with Malwarebytes and it didn't pick up anything. Then I tried Superantispyware and it picked up two Browser Hijack Objects and regular cookies. I thought maybe I caught it but when I booted by in regular mode my space still didn't decrease after deleting a huge file. What should I do next?

Answer:I can't recover hard drive space after deleting files

What is the total capacity of the harddrive and how large is the file you deleted?Excellent job scanning with both Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware before posting your question!Apologies if I don't respond to your reply immediately. Hey Guys,

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. The end result is I need to recover the Documents and Settings folder on my HDD. Here is the scenario:

About two weeks ago, I came home to a dead computer. The fans were on in the case, but the monitor was off. Every time I rebooted, the same happened. I finally had to send my motherboard and CPU in. Intel sent me a warranty replacement Dual Core 2 2.4Ghz processor and ASUS sent me a new motherboard. However, it was not the original. It was the same type of board but the premium model (P5N32-SLI Premium, original was Deluxe) as they didn’t have mine in stock.

While I waited for the new components to arrive, I was able to hook up my old hard drive to my brother’s computer. The hard drive is a SATA Western Digital 250GB. I was able to grab a few files off but didn’t need any others at the time. Plus, the hard drive seemed to working fine so I had no reason to think it would be a problem to get files off in the future.

When I finally got the components back, I hooked everything up. The computer posted with no problem so I went through and configured the BIOS to my liking. Upon reboot, I received an error along the lines of “No Operating System” found. I rebooted but the same occurred. I then put in my Windows XP Pro CD thinking that maybe the new motherboard was giving Windows a problem. When I went through to choose the “R” Repair option (NOT Recovery Console), it should ask me which Windows installation I wou... Read more

My friend has a dell laptop, and now when they turn it on it just gets a black screen. I tried it, it just has a blinking cursor in the top left corner.

I booted to a linux mint cd, but when you try to mount the hard drive, it gives an error about the file system being half broken or something (sorry I don't have the exact error, but basically it said it couldn't mount and you should run chkdsk /f in windows)

So I took the hard drive out and put it in my usb drive dock. At first it seemed to add the drive, but, in explorer it only showed the dell recovery partition drive, not the main boot drive. I looked in computer management, and it doesn't show the drive at all, and then in explorer the dell recovery drive disappeared. Now explorer won't respond.

If I go to safely remove hardware it does show it as E and G, so I guess it's sort of seeing both the recovery and main drive partitions. I just clicked on it to safely remove but nothing is happening. Explorer is still not responding.

How should I proceed?

Answer:Trying to recover files from maybe dead laptop hard drive

10 minutes later safely remove finally comes up and says its safe to remove the drive (and explorer is no longer frozen) haha. I'm going to just turn off the dock for now and wait for some replies here because I'm not sure what to do next.

I had an Acer laptop which fell off the bed and stopped working. I now have been trying to recover my data from its hard drive for about 2 months. I connected it with my new laptop via USB and am using Remo Recovery Software to retrieve the files but the problem is, the hard drive keeps disconnecting every couple of minutes (there is a click every time it does). I would really appreciate some advice on how to fix this problem, reconnect it different or ideally what software would not stop the recovery when the hard drive disconnects but pause it and wait until it connects again. Thank you!

I think I'm screwed but I want someone to tell me in writing. Yesterday I was on my computer when my hard drive started making a clicking sound ("click of death" from what I gather). My computer immediately froze and I had to hold down the power button to get it to turn off. It won't turn back on. I can't start it in safe mode and when I tried to use the recovery CD it said there was no hard drive. Since then I've been using my friend's laptop and searching all over the internet for answers. I booted it with a Linex live CD tonight but I can't access any files (confusing, I don't know if I'm doing it right).

I bought my Compaq computer online in 2006. It came with Microsoft Office 2003 installed on it so I don't have a disk. I've upgraded to Office 2007 since then but downloaded it online so I don't have a disk for it either. All I have on disk is Office 2000. I backed up my Documents and Settings a few months ago but that does me no good if I don't have the software to go along with it.

Paying a professional costs a mint and I don't know if they would be able to recover anyway. Do I have any hope? Do you think I should try a new logic board or should I just give up and start over with a new hard drive and new software (with all of that extra money I most certainly don't have)?

I have a Lenovo IdeaCentre K210 desktop. My hard drive ran out of room and now will not boot. I tired using 'safe mode' to delete some old files and I did recover some extra hard drive space but it still will not boot. (The .exe file that starts the OS appears to be hidden in a special 'Lenovo created partition and I am unable to find it in safe mode.)

I hooked my hard drive to another computer (using a USB device) to recover my data files but all of my data files are missing my latest saves? I seems that Lenovo creates a special type of file or partition called 'dynamic buffer.' I can only assume that my most recent saves are located there and are placed on 'C drive' when I 'release the dynamic buffer' (of course did not happen when the hard drive became full.)

Lenovo web site has a 'recovery' program but (if I understand correctly) it reformats the hard drive and reinstalls the OS. If this is true, all my data would be losted.

My best solution would be to be able to 'boot up' from my hard drive. I tried the OS cd to repair the boot problem but apparently it does not know where the special .exe file is and nothing is fixed.

The second best solution would be to find a software program that can extract my data from my hard drive. Anyone know of one?

You might be able to use a free recovery tool like Recuva or MiniTool Partition Wizard. But there are no guarantees that all deleted files will be recovered or that they will be in a usable condition.

It may be safer to contact HP support and buy a set of recovery disks for your particular machine. I'm taking a guess that you are in India?

Hi, I will be as concise as possible on this thread.
My hp pavilion dv6000 is running windows 10 currently the 1511 version. Pc is passworded and associated with Microsoft account. Somehow it developed fault that resulted to spark on the board resulting to system unable to power on. I have a new system but I need to transfer my files from the old laptop's hard drive so I used the socket that connects internal hard drive to another laptop as external hard drive via USB. it FAILED to install the hardware. It installs as unknown in device manager. I have tried on other sockets and PCs still noticed the same thing. Hard drive is healthy..
I am almost certain this has to do with windows 10 attempts to prevent me from losing my files to theft perhaps my hard drive was stolen, something that is obtainable in earlier versions of windows. However, that's just my guess.
Meanwhile I have NOT tried connecting the hard drive via IDE socket to try booting windows 10 on another laptop BUT I tried booting it as OS on external hard drive & it is not read by the laptop
I really need help on how to access the hard drive and get my files as the spoiled laptop shows no sign of coming up soon.
Thanks

Hi all, glad I found this forum, and am hoping somebody will help me out.

Here's the background to my issue. I have an older HP NC6220, XP Pro, with a Seagate 40gb ST94813A Momentus 5400.2.

While downloading pics from my camera to the hd, which I've done many times before, the laptop died. I think something with the power supply went bad. I pulled and re-installed the aux and main batteries, but could not get it to power up.

I bought a new HP G71 W7 laptop.

Someone suggested buying an external case for the old laptop's HD so I could get my files off of it. I did. The external case comes with two USB cables; one seems to be for power and one for data. I plugged the drive into it, making sure the one missing connector matches up with the same location on the pc board fo the holder.

I plugged it into my new laptop, the red light on the holder changes to green, but I get one of three results: driver missing, there is a problem, or no message at all. The drive does spin when plugged in with either or both cables.

I did go to the Seagate site, but all I could find on this drive was info related to the drive being inside a laptop. I could find nothing on accessing it in a holder. If you know of info there on how to do this, please send me a link to the section.

Then someone suggested that because the old laptop was XP Pro, the new W7 could not work with it. So I Plugged the thing into my homebuilt desktop that runs XP Pro. The light never turns green on the ho... Read more

Computer died. Will not turn on. Motherboard has expired. So the Geek Squad backed up my hard drive onto DVDs for me. I had to go back and ask them to do the outlook express files, so I could recover my email. I even took them printouts with instructions on what to do.

You guessed it. What they gave me today is a CD with all the *.dbx files (in their folders), but I can't figure out how to import them into Outlook Express (loaded again on my new computer). When I click on 'import', I get an error message because it is looking for files that were saved in Outlook Express, not just saved as raw files.

There must be a way to work around this, but I don't know what it is. Can anybody help me? There are lots of things I need in those mail folders.
