smartdisk 250gb external not recognised

Question: smartdisk 250gb external not recognised

I have a SmartDisk 250 gb external harddrive that seems to not be recognised on my computer (vista premium os). I plug it in, it does not go into the usual "installing new hardware" thing, but I can go into the device manager and the hardrive is listed as being on the system. But, in the device manager, it is named "Samsung SP2514N". I downloaded the drivers for that model and installed, still have no access to it. the device manager gives the following info on it:
Disk: Disk 3
Type: Basic
Status: Online
Partition Style: Master Boot Record (MBR)
Capacity: 238474 MB
Unallocated space: 2 MB
Reserved space: 0 MB

thats all I have on it. any help on accessing and using this harddrive would be greatly appreciated

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi
I have looked through previos questions but couldn't find a solution. I have a 250g USB driven HDD not recognised by ny PC. I used the HDD on my TV so I think it will probably need reformatting. When plugged in it appears in Disk Management but without a drive letter and when I right click on the drive most of the options, including allocate letter are greyed out. Any solutions?
TIA

Answer:USB 250GB HDD not recognised by PC

I would recommend PartedMagic, it is now paid for software, but at only $4.99 it is a sound investment. Download it, burn it to a cd or put it on a USB stick and boot from it.
Have the suspect drive connected and PartedMagic should be able to see it and it will enable you to format the drive, whatever the existing filesystem is.

I have a 250GB external mini toshiba HDD bus powered and need a device driver to connect to my computer which is running on win98se platform.

Can any one HELP?

Answer:External 250gb usb hdd, win98 drivers

You can try installing the chipset software for your motherboard, but that may not work. If you can provide the exact model of the hard drive and the make/model of your motherboard, we may be able to help. Win98SE has very limited native USB support and there may not be any way to get the drive to work. If there's any way you can update your OS to something even slightly newer, like WinME even, the support for the drive would be built-in....

I use W7 Home Premium and would like to make a backup of my entire system. I will use the image method and the combination of my C and D discs are about 125GB total. It appears to me that this Seagate will do the job, however, I would like some opinions before I purchase it. Thanks

Answer:Seagate 250GB USB External Drive

You can get a 1TB external hd for $75. Why limit yourself. You can store an image of your hd, as well as back it up. Will the 250GB be ok? Yes. But go ahead and get the larger drive.

Im thinking of Buying the Beyond Micro External HDD. I am having trouble finding if its compatible with my current pc. The HDD I want says its got an Interface of USB 2.0. My current HDD has an interface of ATA/133.

My question is: Even thought the Beyond Micro HDD is an External USB does it have to have the same interface as my curent HDD, which im guessing is my pc's interface or does it mean that if you have a USB it will work?

The Beyond Micro does say:
Complies with Universal Serial Bus Specification Rev. 2.0.
Complies with T13's ATA/ATAPI-6 Draft Specification
Supports PIO modes 0, 3, 4, and UDMA modes 2, 4
Supports Power Down mode and USB suspend indicator.
Supports Wakeup ability
Works with both PC and Mac
Plug-and-play and hot-swappable connection
Plug and Play
Hot-Swappable

Does this have anthing to do with its compatability with my computer?

Thanks for your help.

Answer:Beyond Mirco 250GB/8MB Cache/External HDD

The USB 2.0 is simply how it connects to your computer and transfers it's data. depending on how much they want for the micro. you can probably buy a hard drive and enclosure from Newegg for alot less.

Does anyone have external speakers for a tablet?

I'm looking for speakers that will give high quality sound with my Archos 70 IT 250GB. I don't need speakers that will blast really loud, but I do want good quality sound with some volume.

I'd like to have speakers that I can carry with me in my backpack, that will somehow close safely, so as not to ruin the speakers.

Good Morning:I have Xp on one drive (120Gb) and Vista on another drive (200Gb) although I could move that one to another 120Gb drive.I also have a 250Gb Western Digital USB2 external drive which I would like to partition to make it a back-up for the two operating systems. Can anyone point me to an easy (and cheap) program to do that. I used the format option from right clicking the drive in "My Computer" I formated it and I can only format it to 9.40GB using NTFS. How do I make it so I can use my entire 250GB?

Start>Right click on My Computer>Manage>Disk Management.

See if there is any other partitions on there. Also i would recommend using one of the Disk Formatting tools in the Windows Index Stickies link in my sig. In that Index there is a topic called Recommended Software for certain tasks. At the bottom of the first post you will see Formatting tools. GParted, DBan, KillDisk will get the job done for you.

Hi,

I have a 250GB WD external HDD that I have a lot of important work stored on. It suddenly stopped showing up in my computer when I plug it in. It does however show up in the bottom right bar and can be safely removed although this takes a lot longer than it should do.

I have read other threads and it doesn't show up in 'disk management' but it does show up in 'device manager' under 'disk drives'.

I have read previous threads and they say to change the cable but I don't see how this would affect it as it is a short standard cable that it came with and the white LED shows up. I have also checked the internal connections and they look fine.

I'd appreciate any advice that anyone can offer. Perferably in Lehmans terms as I'm not an IT specialist!

In anticipation.

Charlie

Answer:WD 250GB External HDD doesn't show up when plugged in?? Please Help..

Change the cable. Beyond that it's disassembly.

IMO W-D external drives suffer from issues with the connections (the drives are fine).
Earlier this week I took apart my W-D Passport drive because it had the same symptoms that you describe. Once apart it worked like a charm!

You may want to check the drive on another computer because it should just be plug and play.

I guess there's a chance the drive is not partitioned or formated, If you you go to Disk Management does it show the drive? How about in Device Manager, is it listed there or are there any errors showing?

I have been using this USB drive for some time. I have it divided in to three seperate partitions, but recently (and this is the second time this has happened) XP will no longer detect the already existing partitions on the drive. I am able to see the drive in device manager, it shows up as a WD 2500JB External USB Device, as well as in the manage option when right clicking My Computer. However in the manage window it shows the whole drive as unallocated space. I know that there are files on there, (several GB's of customer backups.) it was there just yesterday. Any ideas on how to get Xp to pull it's head out and see these partitions?

Hello all. I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a 250gb maxtor hard drive. I have just purchased my second external case off of ebay and it does not work!!

The first one was no name brand, it says "Awesome" on the case and has lights that light up around the case. It said on the web it supports up to 250gb, and on the auction. When I plug it in, it recognizes it and I can view an play files off of it for maybe 5 minutes then it says "USB device not recognized" and gives errors like "this usb device can run faster on USB 2.0" which it is in a 2.0 port. Funny thing is right when I got it, it worked for a few hours, it kept working pretty well at first for maybe a week, then it just stops working after a few minutes.

So I purchased another one on ebay, another non name brand, it said it supports up to 250 gb, and this one it recognizes it for a few seconds and then it is suddently not on my computer at all. I have checked the device manager under both of these items and for drivers, etc. Everything seems to be working fine. I even downloaded a file that helps your computer recognize high disk space, although I was told on XP I don't have to do that. So what do you all think?? Is it just the cheap external case?? I've previously added two home made external disks, a 120Gb IBM and a 300Gb Maxtor, to my Medion PC (Pentium 3Ghz, 18 months old) without any problem. I'm trying to add a 250Gb Hitachi Deskstar but nothing happens - even the fact that a USB device has been plugged in is not recognised. As soon as I replace the disk with a 40Gb Maxtor, it all works fine, so the case and connections don't appear to be a problem. I've replaced the Deskstar, thinking it was faulty, but exactly the same happens with the new disk and Add New Hardware doesn't find anything. I'm on XP Home. Has anybody got any suggestions, please?

I bought a Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 250GB drive for a friend a few days ago. I was able to get it connected to a machine running Windows XP SP2 just fine and I could see the drive ok. I noticed about 18GB or so was "used" even though there was only one 73MB PDF file visible when I viewed the drive contents. The drive has 232GB of free space, I believe.

I understand not all 250GB will be available for user data but is it reasonable for 18GB to be consumed by filesystem info?

Thanks!

Peace...

If you intend to use the scanner with Windows 7 I suggest you try Control Panel> Devices and Printers> add a device.I did a Google search and found a reference that Verbatim made the scanner but their site was no help. Same for Smart Modular Technologies. The reviews from 2003 I found did not rate that scanner very well. You may be better off buying a new one. See the link below.http://www.smartm.com/There are third party driver sites around. If you had a program to edit the scans you can probably locate a free one by searching.

Answer:Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini 250GB "no external drive selected"

This is really a question for Maxtor customer support, since the drive works in windows the drive is fully working as far as my help goes, notice the maxtor helper doesn't detect any drives and you have many connected, I would first try reinstalling and updating the maxtor application, I would also try removing some of the other drives you have connected since there are Five.

Try this, go to control panel, admin tools, computer management , diskmanagement , right click drive and make sure your backup partition is marked as active, since it shows in my computer it should already be.

Right click the drive in computer, properties, security and make sure you have full admin privileges.

Ok.
I own 2 External 1TB Iomega USB HDD's they have served me well for about 8months now. They both are about 90% full and i know thats a little over the 15% free space line but ehh.

Well. I recently moved from California to North Carolina due to my job. I sold my old computer but kept both of my HDD's. I started to use them on my wifes computer and they worked well for about a month. Then i tryed plugging them in yesterday and neighter wants to work! They are both full of files i do not want to lose... I always safely remove them with the wizzard when i can. They both do not show up on disk manager...

Will supply info if needed. I use them A LOT. and they have never given me problems. They dont show up in disk managment. Ive went through all the steps on the manufactors website but still a no go.

They turn on, the power light is steady... the cable is not damaged that i can see on either end.

Please help me with this! I really want to get those files back!

Hi everybody,

I have a weird situation on an w7 x64 OS. I have 2 Western Digital My book essential external hard disk (1TB each) and they are not both correctly recognised by the OS. They are both detected but one of them is recognised as CD Drive.

I have another 2 internal hard disk - one is partitioned in 2 partitions (C & D), the other has one single partition (E). One of the external HD is correctly recognised as HDD (letter assigned J), but the other external HDD (which has 2 partitions - H & I) is recognised as CD Drive - please see attached screenshot.

It is not a problem related to formatting as both external HDD have been formatted in NTFS. Actually, if I disconnect the external drive that is correctly assigned (J), the other external HDD becomes available as HDD with both its partitions.

Please advise if it has to do with letter assignment or w7 has a maximum no. of partitions recognised as HDD?

TKS.

Answer:WD external HD recognised as

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Please post a screenshot of your Disk Management layout so that we can see how your partitions are configured.

You can have up to four primary partitions on each hard drive, and then create logical partitions within the fourth primary partition if you need more.

As for your WD external drives, you could try changing their drive letters to say, X and Y, so that they are well away from your internal hard drives.

I have been operating an external HDD (Maxtor, 40GB) connected through an USB port on my notebook for a few years now and only operated the HDD (which runs on external power supply) only occassionaly for backups and some file storage. It was working well without any problems until today, when during moving around some of the files stored on HDD the connnection to the HDD just suddenly dropped and could not be reestablished. When connecting the HDD through USB I only get message that "USB Device not recognized" and "One of teh USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.
I am working with Windows XP SP2.

Any suggestions for help?

Regards

Peter

Answer:External HDD not recognised

First off, try it on another computer. If it malfunctions there, then either the drive or the USB case controller has probably failed.

I have recently installed a PCI USB2 card and hub.I have Win XP (SP2) installed, my external HD works fine if plugged up to one of the USB1 ports although I get a message telling me that "The USB Mass Storage Device is a HI-SPEED USB device and will function at reduced speed when plugged into a non HI-SPEED port. The hubs shown in bold type have ports that can support HI-SPEED USB devices, disconnect the USB Mass Storage Device from its current port and then connect it to one of the ports on a hub shown in blod type.If I do this I get a message: H:\ is not accessible, The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. When I go to device manager, there is nothing showing a problem and my USB device can be seen under Disk Drives as a WDC-WD400bb.... USB Device, there are also no conflicts under USB Controllers. If I use my external HD, ignoring the HI-SPEED message as plugged into a USB1 port, ll fuctions fine.I have looked at the device driver for the USB external HD and it tells me that drivers do not need to be loaded for WinXP, only for W98.Any help much appreciated.Sharon

Please help, a friend of mine has bought a Disgo DISNET3000r (why?) he has tried to plug his 2.5" external HDD in to the USB port but the Windows CE OS will not even recognise it. My opinion is this: Windows CE is an embedded OS and therefore it is held on flash memory so therefore has no need for sata or ide controllers which i believe is the problem but is there a way to get the drive to work or is it a lost cause and all he can use for storage is flash memory....Does anybody have any ideas or does anybody think my thoughts are wrong and know of some other reason why this wont recognise the device???
Any help would be greatly appreciated......

I have an old IDE 100gb HDD which was installed in an external enclosure. Everything was fine till I cloned the OS from a new SSD to it for backup using the EaseUS Todo Backup Free 7.5 programe. When complete the following messages showed. "Failed-Partition Clone-)x1760E077"; Partition Clone Failed; Failed to write sector.

Now my computer does not recognise the external HDD, and shows it as an IDE device. How can I get the HDD recognised so that I can reformat the HDD.

My computer OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

Answer:External IDE HDD not recognised by OS.

Does it show in Disk Management? If yes, you can try assigning a drive letter. If that doesn't work, use the diskpart command from a Elevated Command Prompt to set it up again (maybe).

diskpart
list disk
select disk # (# is the number of the 100GB external drive)
clean
exit

Note: Make absolutely sure you have selected the right disk before using clean.

If that works, assign a drive letter in Disk Management then quick format it.

I have a Western Digital 1TB external HDD. It's always plugged in, however, this evening I was having some (on going) problems with my PC. So to protect the contents of the external HDD I decided it was safer to disconnect it from the PC. But when I plugged it in again, it didn't recognise it and loaded drivers for it.
The problem is it's now calling it an 'Intitio Default Controller' and as such doesn't show it in 'My Computer'. I can only find it in 'Devices and Printers'. When I click on it, it doesn't open or do anything?
I tried to get in touch with WD but they just gave me the run around, by showing my FAQ's. I have loads of stuff on there that I can't afford to lose.

Answer:External HDD not recognised for what it is

Hi guys thanx for your inputs, however, niether of your suggestions applied. I tried plugging into different ports, but the out come was the same. So I switched off the PC and unplugged the HDD. I rebooted the PC, then switched it off again and plugged the HDD back in and rebooted. Bingo, it was recognised.
Phew, that was a scary moment. I keep meaning to do more backups of my data, but I'm sure you know what good intentions are like...perhaps tomorrow. But we all know tomorrow rarely ever comes for fixes. Tomorrows are full of regrets for the fixes we never got around to do.

In 2011, I bought 2 units of WD My Book Essential 2TB external HDD to backup my working files. Unit A is being used at least once a week for backup, while unit B is not being used regularly, probably just a handful of time 2-3 years ago.Now that unit A is full, as I took the unit B from the cabinet and connected it, it doesn't seem to be recognised:? I got the pop-up message saying the device is ready to use.? It appears in My Computer, but without the capacity information. Double clicking it doesn't open it, just the green loading bar. ? It appears in Device Manager under "Disk drives", but under "Other devices", there is a "WD SES Device USB Device" with yellow exclamation mark. So today I bring it to the computer shop, same problem. The technician said the HDD is dead and there is nothing can be done.My first question: How possible is it that a HDD that's rarely been used will die for no reason?Weird enough, after I reach home and try to connect the HDD again, this time I get the  scan the disk to fix problem message (can't remember the exact message), and after the scanning is completed, the HDD just works as normal! My second question: How can I be sure whether the HDD is really healthy? I'm hesitated to use it, worrying it may be dead again anytime.  Anyway, the computer shop technician suggested that I should get a mobile HDD instead (which does not require power input) since I'm only using it for ba... Answer:External HDD Not Recognised

My first question: How possible is it that a HDD that's rarely been used will die for no reason?HDDs don't die for no reason, they die for a reason. You just don't know why this one died. An HDD can die at any time, even after being in storage since new. In fact in a long-stored HDD the spindle lubricant can pool at one end of the spindle and prevent proper spinup the first time it is powered up. My second question: How can I be sure whether the HDD is really healthy? You can run the maker's diagnostic tool, WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics, but you still can't be sure an HD won't fail. That's why we do backups. My third question: Practically, what are the differences between the two types of external HDD (one needs external power and one doesn't) ? An external drive without a power supply (wall wart or AC power) gets its power from the USB socket it is connected to. You need to be sure the USB socket can supply enough power. If it can't you can overheat or damage the computer system or hub and/or get flakey operation.  With an independently powered HDD, you don't have to worry about that.

Hi all,
I have a Lacie 250GB firewire external HD (couple of years old) which I use as a backup device. It's only used (switched on) about once a month.
Everything has been fine until yesterday. When I switch it on, the light comes on and it whirrs into action as usual, but, rather unusually, Windows 7 (32bit) starts looking for a driver and then says, "Device driver software was not successfully installed". The HD, unsurprisingly, doesn't show in "My Computer" but does show in "Device Manager".
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the HD, but still no joy.
I have a separate 64bit partition (used exclusively for music) on the PC which does recognise the HD, so all is not lost, and leads me to think that the HD or cable is not the problem.
Any help much appreciated.

I've read the threads about the AU causing problems with external HDDs, also that the latest patch Tuesday updates corrected this for some people.

I have the opposite problem:

AU installed without problems around 3 weeks ago. Latest updates installed on 23rd August, and nothing untoward noticed afterwards.

Up until yesterday I was using an HDD regularly but today I can no longer see the HDD in File Explorer. I've tried 2 different HDDs, tried different USB ports, tried restarting the laptop. It's still the same - HDD not being recognised. I DO get the audible 'warning' when the HDDs are plugged in and taken out but they then fail to show in File Explorer.

The HDD IS recognised in a laptop that does not yet have the AU, but since the problem has only happened today and I've had the AU since early August, it doesn't seem likely that AU is the problem here.

Could it be something to do with USB ports? (Though I use one for a wireless mouse and this is still working okay, and I connected a printer earlier today and that was also okay).

Any suggestions please?

I have just purchased a Mecer OT-343 HDD external inclosure to move large files between various places of work and my workstation at home. I have used the drive at home for a few days transfering about 20 gig of data to take to other places of work. I have now connected the drive to two other computers (via USB2) at work and they both come up with the standard XP message that XP does not recognise this device, and the drive does not appear on "My Computer" at all. When I take it back home my workstation sees it and everything is working 100%.

My workstation and the other computers are all about a year old and all are running XP Professional ( no "Cracked" operating systems or software).

Any ideas what is going on here?

Answer:Mecer External HD not recognised by XP

First step, Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Create a restore point and name it something like "Before USB Fix". This is to bail you out if something goes wrong during the following process and makes things worse.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG

-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------
REGEDIT4
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"

-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function. I don't have one yet, so I haven't had time to modify the ... Read more

I have had a Maxtor One Touch 11 external HD for about 10 months. Originally, it worked fine, but more recently it is not recognised by XP on my PC. If I switch it on and try run>G:/ (the letter assigned to it), my system hangs. I know there was a thread on this subject some months ago, but the query then was solved when the enquirer discovered his drive was faulty and Maxtor replaced it. My drive is not faulty as it works perfectly ok on my laptop (also running XP). The PC has an Athlon 64 3400 processor, the laptop an Intel Celeron. I have tried connecting the drive both via a USB 2 port and via firewire, but this doesn't cure the problem. I uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it. The drive was recognised at that stage, but not when I switched it off and on again. In the previous thread, someone suggested leaving the external drive on, and rebooting, but this is not possible as it is not recognised as a slave drive. When I boot I do get a message now that gearsec will not load - I believe that is something to do with USB drives. Is that by any chance part of the problem? I'm sure there used to be an article on this on the microsoft site, but I cannot now find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I was using my external hdd to transfer a bunch of files when it stopped working mid transfer. When I plug it in now the drive starts whirring and the lights come on, sometimes it will pop up in the corner of the screen saying new hardware detected, but its nowhere to be found in 'My Computer'. I have tried to manually assign the drive a drive letter, but it doesn't show up in disk management.

I took the drive to the local computer service guy who tried to put it in a different caddy, but he said because it was WD it had an unusual port which wasn't comparable with his.

Has anyone else had a similar issue, any ideas how to solve it?

Thanks

Should I just go out ans spend more one on drive enclosures or is there another way around it?

Answer:External HDD not recognised by comouter

Right click on computer and select manage, in the left column select disk management, look in the lower portion of the window. Do you see a drive with no drive letter assigned? If so, right click the drive, select change drive letter or path, next window select add, and add a drive letter. If it is a new drive, there should be nothing on it. it may want to 'initialize' it and format it. If it does and there is no data on it, do so, select new simple volume, and when finished it will be usable.

When you first get to Disk Management, you may very well be met with a pop up window that says a drive needs to be initialized, if that happens, click OK and follow the steps of creating a New Simple Volume.

hi everyone,
looking for someone to point me in the right direction if possible!!

i've just been round to my friends house who's just bought another DVD-RW. It's an internal drive but he's got it in a external Firewire casing. The problem is that XP ain't recognising it at all, it's not showing in device manager or in disk management.

He's already got an internal DVD-RW which is working fine, also a seperate CD-RW which came with the machine. he does a lot of DVD burning for work which is why he's bought another DVD-RW !!

he did have an external dvd-rw before which worked fine, but he bought this new one as it is faster.
The drive he's just bought is a Panasonic DVR-109 and it's has exactly the same model as the the one he has internally, which works fine.

it didn't come with any drivers as it's supposed to be plug and play, and the internal installed without drivers.

I have tried changing the jmpers from master to slave, and tried cable select, but neither make any difference!

anyone any ideas what the problem could be?

Answer:External f/w DVDRW not recognised

I'd install the new one internally, just to make sure it's good.

Also, while doing the troubleshooting, I'd remove the old one until the new one is running properly.

You can try the Free program http://www.easeus.com/resource/external-hard-drive-not-formatted.htm to recover your data.
(not used the above, but I do use the free easeus Partition Mananger and that is excellent)
It sounds as if the ext HD has become corrupted, probably caused by switching it off while indexing files were still being written to it. Your data should still be there though.

Hey guys I have a problem that I need some help with. I bought an external HD for my laptop back in May which decided to stop working about 2 months ago. I wasn't to sure if it was the drive itself or another component that was faulty so I took the drive out and put it into a friends tower type PC. The drive worked fine. So I presumed it must be the small PCB board that connects to the drive inside the casing. I bought a new board and connected everything up but again I got nothing, so.....I bought a new casing with yet another new PCB board and tried once again. The first time I connected it to my laptop, the laptop recognised a external device being attached (i got the ding dong sound) but after about 45secs the ballon above the Add new hardware icon on the task bar said the device might not be working properly. Again I tried it on my friends PC, but this time attaching it via USB (instead of internaly). The PC found it straight away, it recognised the drive but there was not icon in "My Computer" to access the drive itself. This is driving me nuts, can anyone help? Im using a Acer Travelmate 240, XP Pro, all my USB ports are working and the external drive is a Maxtor 80Gb. Cheers guys and i do apologise for going on a bit.

Answer:External Hardrive not recognised!!!

Hi, I'm having problems with a WD My Passport external HDD on a new HP G42 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

The HDD works perfectly on a seperate desktop with Win7 Home Premium 64bit as well, which is why I am totally baffled as to why it is not working on the laptop. It appears on the Device Manager under Disk Drives, and also shows up on USB device viewer, something I downloaded while searching the interwebz for a solution, but not on My Computer.

Does anyone know anything i could do?

I have a MECER external drive which suddenly is not recognised by one computer, but is recognised by the other. Both computers have legit XP Professional operating systems which are up to date. I have no problem with my other VANTEC external USB drives.

The MERCER used to work then would not, so I took it to MERCER agent who "repaired" it. Then it worked for a while then stoped again. Took it back to agent who tested it & said there is nothing wrong. Brought it back and it worked - for a while, now its gone again. All along it has always worked on my older 2ND computer.

I have tried different USB ports, changed USB cables, reformated the drive on my 2ND computer - still no luck. I get the message:

"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognise it"

Answer:External USB Drive not recognised

No Response? I have done a search on this forum and read through 500 similar threads to mine and still have no answer.

since my drive works on my 2nd computer the drive and the inclosure must be OK? Since both computers have XP Professional does that mean it cant be a problem with the operating system?

So that leaves the computer hardware. Is there a conflict between the inclosure and the motherboard???

Why is the problem not always there??????

Bought a new external HDD but my computer won't recognise it. The lights are on but no-one's home, so to speak. I've tried unplugging it and plugging it in again. Tried restarting it with drive attached. Tried it with the supplied 2-headed-USB lead and with a different lead, in several different USB ports - back, front, hub, powered hub. The best result I got was that once the computer tried to load the drivers for the device and then said the device was not recognised and got the "try again or replace the device" message. It doesn't show up at all in the device manager, so I can't even update the drivers to make it work.
This computer has done this before with a couple of other devices -most recently with a hard drive that used to work on this machine until the power supply for it burnt out, but then I had to do a fresh reload of Windows and suddenly the HDD won't show up even with a new power supply.
Usually it's a case of finding drivers or firmware or windows updates that fixes it, but since I bought this from ebay without packaging and don't even know what model the HDD is, I'm going to have trouble finding the right program for this one. The HDD did work for a few minutes on my Windows 7 laptop, so the HDD should be functioning (though it then decided to reject it from that computer, too, so maybe driver issues there, as well?)
Any ideas?

Answer:External Drive not recognised

So, you bought a "new" HDD without packaging and have no idea what brand and model number it is? There's no markings anywhere to signify the model number? Any reputable hard drive maker will indicate this very pertinent information somewhere, in addition to all the stampings of approval from various authorities (UL, CE, FCC, etc). Either the seller stripped off the placard or put the drive in a generic casing, both of which raise the suspicion meter into the uneasy zone. FWIW, I recommend you stick to brand new sealed package HDD's in the future. It brings a peace of mind as well as the recourse to return it or get warranty service. With this particular HDD, you may not even have the chance to return it to the eBay seller if it is established that it is faulty.

If your Vista installed computer has a history of not recognizing other devices, this compounds the problem. But, you say that the HDD worked only for a few minutes in W7 before it ended up "rejected" or not recognized. Maybe you have a bad USB cable. Try swapping that out and getting the HDD to work on your W7 machine before anything else. You want to establish that it's a functioning device before dealing with the problem child Vista computer.

Finally, be sure you've applied SP2 (service pack 2) to Vista and run Windows Update to get all of the latest updates. Earlier versions of Vista had device driver issues that were rectified in SP2 and later.

My external hard drive has no on/off switch so I usually pull the lead out when not in use. I've just plugged it in but for some reason it is not being recognised. The light is on but flashing, which it usually doesn't. Can anyone please suggest what could be the matter.Fay

Answer:Maxtor external hd not recognised

Hi, only guessing, but perhaps when you unplugged your drive it may still have been 'reading' data, in which case you may have unwittingly corrupted the data on the drive and it is now trying to read the data but can't. I am very surprised that it has no on/off switch/button?

I have a new Western Digital 500GB USB HDD and I've used that to transfer items from my XP laptop to my new Vista laptop. It worked well when the HDD was the only item connected to a USB and I'd not installed any programs. However after installing Firewalls, Anti-Virus, Anti-Malware, Printer and Browser plus a Docking Station the HDD is no longer recognised. Initially it was still visible but reported zero capacity, now it's not visible at all and I get little bubble messages saying a USB device has malfunctioned (even though it's still on the same USB port). If I attach it to my XP laptop (with the same programs running) it works 100%.Any ideas what might be happening?

Answer:External HDD no longer recognised

Try disabling, one at a time the firewall, AV etc and see if it works.

Hi. Christmas Day - yet again. How fast they seem to come round these days! Well, Happy Christmas to all ...

OK, USB drives then: I have three here which are powered by the USB bus (i.e. no a/c power source necessary, or indeed, possible). They all work fine with my laptops (XP and Win7), but I am trying to copy data to my mother's PC and it won't recognise them at all. When I plug them in I get a clicking sound, like a watch being wound, but that's all. Nothing appears in Device Manager when I plug the drive in, nor in Disk Management. When I first tried this yesterday, I got a 'newdev.dll' error message, as far as I recall it was "Error in Newdev.dll Missing entry: Client Side Install" - I copied the dll file over from my laptop, but as I suspected, no change. The error message doesn't come up any more (after a reboot), but same issue..

I have Googled this and of course there are thousands of possible threads to look at but I haven't found one that gives me a lead. One suggests repairing Windows from the installation disc, but I'd rather not do this - it's not SO vital I copy this data that I go through a repair process, which I know from when I have run Windows repair on my own PCs, does change settings: as this is not my PC I don't want to give my aged mother a headache when she finds things have changed from what she is used to.

That said, if anyone can help, given I can't even see the drives in DM, that... Read more

I disconnected the external USB hard disc, which had been functioning normally up to now, after cancelling a backup. On next booting the computer I got the message that a USB device was not recognised which I have traced to the USB hard drive. I have checked all the connections, removed the wires from the computer and reconnected them but still no recognition. Is there a way in which I can get the computer to "see" the hard drive?

Good Evening, i need some help!

For the past month i have been trying to free up my computer by moving all my music and itunes from the computer's hard drive to an external drive i recently bought. Sounds easy huh?

Since day 1 the drive has not worked (although it formats fine i can't seem to get data on there) and a couple of days before this my ipod would not be recognised in itunes and update as normal. I think the external drive is fine but when i tried it on an old computer it did not show up. So i started investigating...

Been getting the message on the new Buffalo hard drive=

"F: is not accessible. The maximum number of secrets that may be stored in a single system has been exceeded."

After doing some research i have got a hint that the issue may lie with malware / windows due to malware and possibly effecting both.

But one can only guess?...I'm a total novice in computers really need some advice as i don't want to reinstall and risk losing anything or ruin my computer so it has even more disfunctionality for the other users. I'm using Windows XP + SP-2 btw.

With the Ipod i've tried the basics (using a different usb, restarting the computer, re-installing itunes, restoring the ipod which never finishes so i'm left back on square 1.) The ipod used to show up in my computer and now does not and it's the same with this new external hard drive.

I've run SuperAntispyware and previously Malwareby... Read more

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Hello,Need some help please! Please note this is the first time ive done something this complex (other than adding RAM - Newbie alert!)I had 2 x 250GB hard drives in my Dell.I use one for Apps and OS and the other for Docs.I wanted to put the Docs Hard drive in an external enclosure so that it would be portable and in case of problems with the PC, be easy to rescue. So i got an Icy Box IB-360AStUs-BLBut the problem is when i plug it in, i can not acess the drive.Further Details:1. Im not sure if i installed the drive in the bay correctly. The drive is SATA, and ive used a cable that attaches it to 2 "things" The connectors are thin, with a row of pins. One is longer than the other. Is this correct?2. The box came with screws, but i havent used any of them?3. When i first plugged it in Windows poped up saying "found new hardware..." and all seemed well... then nothing.4. The CD that came with the box was for Windows 98 = useless!5. Device manager shows no problems.Any ideas?

Buffalo HD-PET640U2/R-EU

Hello. I've been having problems with the above drive (similar to this previous thread). I've had the drive for about a year & a half. It worked fine (on Win XP Home) up until a few days ago, when I connected it to my new laptop (Win 7).

On connecting, a warning message came up saying that Windows had detected disk errors - did I want to scan it? I said Yes, it completed the scan (no errors), but I couldn't access any of the files in Windows Explorer. I Safely Removed USB Hardware and tried again, but said No to the error scan ("Are you sure, some files may be corrupted?"). On continuing, I could see all my files.

I then selected Windows Scandisk, and once the scan completed the HDD was very slow to select. It didn't show any of my files again, and showed the following error messages whenever I tried to access it:

Hi,

Do NOT format it - that will result in you losing your files.

Use the Partition Wizard partition recovery software to try and recover the partition to another disk.

Hi,
Running XPpro with 30gig H/D which is almost full.
Have bought new external hard drive - Western Digital 160gig to be Connected via USB2. Have formatted, set drive letter (Z) but cannot see new drive when connected to USB under "my computer".
Drive can be found via computer management. disc management, drive shows as primary with same details as C drive - Type basic, Layout partition, online, NTFS, status Healthy Active.
Cannot get the drive to show under "my computer"
When drive is connected to another computer we have (Win 2000) the Z drive works perfectly- like any usb connected device.

Any suggestions on how to get the system to recognise the drive would be much appreciated.

THANX!!

Hi first post here. My portable hard drive stops showing up all of a sudden. It is connected to a USB hub. When I go to 'Disk Management' in 'Computer Management', the hard drive shows up as Unknown - Not Initialised. Also this hard drive works while not using the USB hub, and the USB hub works as well with other devices. Please help, I need this fixed soon. Thanks!

Answer:External hard drive not recognised

Powered or unpowered hub? If it unpowered its drawing all its power from the one USB port its plugged into. USB 2 ports are limited to 500 ma max. If you have more than one device on the hub its likely not supplying enough current for the hard drive to function properly. A powered hub can supply 500 ma per port.
