Computer dies randomly in games

Question: Computer dies randomly in games

My computer has been randomly dying when i play graphic intense games. (Everquest 2, World of Warcraft, etc) The monitor says no signal and goes to standby and the sound plays the last sound playing for a few loops. I need to hold down the power button to turn it off. Sometimes after this happens the computer refuses to turn on afterwards, i would have to try a couple of times.

I have tried booting with only 1 of the 2 ram sticks (for both) and came with the same results. If the computer was already able to boot, it will. If it wasn't, it wont. I do not have an extra video card to test, and do not want to buy one until i know it REALLY is the problem.

Any input/ suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My computer:
Windows XP
Asus A8V-Deluxe Motherboard BIOS Ver. 08.00.09
AMD Athlon 3400+
Nvidia GeForce 7800 GS 256mb
1536 MB RAM (mixed of 512mb value-select corsair and 1g generic brand)
520W power supply

Preferred Solution: Computer dies randomly in games

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, I've been having this problem for a little while now, and I figured this would be the right section to post it in (if not, please feel free to move it). This is the problem I've been having. While playing a 3D game, after a short while, one of 3 things will happen :1. The screen goes completely black and I'm left with no choice but to restart my computer.2. Similar to number one, except now the screen has random blocks of crazy colors all over, and I'm still left with no choice but to restart.3. The computer saves me the trouble of having to hit the power button, and just goes ahead and instantly restarts itself (screen goes black for a sec, and then I'm on the start up screen). And one more problem that I've chosen to separate from those 3; sometimes my computer just completely freezes and I need to restart. This happens seemingly randomly, at any time.I suspect this has something to do with a new video card I installed recently. I've had those 3 problems a bit before, but they are occurring much more frequently with the new card, and the random freezing thing is something new. So perhaps I installed it incorrectly, or its in some way not compatible with my system? I don't know, thats why I come here to ask you guys, any ideas whats going on?Video Card : Nvidia GeForce FX 5200**Might be worth noting that I did not purchase this hardware, it was given to me by a friend, therefor I have no documentation or disc with it**Misc System... it seems to happen most often when playing video or playing facebook games of any type. there is no warning the computer is just OFF. it has done this in safe mode as well and i wasn't even watching video or playing any games then. the only time it has done this before it was over heated. now sometimes it is hot and others it is not so it really seems random. no viruses, no malware, regular maintenance is kept up. if i can find a solution other than formatting the machine that would be great, or at least knowing if formatting would do me any good at all. i have downloaded hijack this and the TSGInfo follows:

I have had my 3000 N100 Thinkpad for around 2 years now and after a year and a half I realised the Battery was no longer charging, soon after this happened my Laptop would just die randomly, when I say die I mean there is no shutdown screen  it is as iff all power to the p.c. suddenly stopped. At first I though it must be a Virus but after numerous scans and re-installing Windows the problem re-occured, Today I opened the P.C. and checked the fan as I thought maybe it was over heating and eventually giving in, I was relieved to see a load of dust and used the vacumn to clear the fan.I thought that would fix the problem but now if anything it seems worse, I know the battery is dead as the charge level is 0 and the battery indicator on the front of the laptop flashes 5 times organge before disappears completely...In a Final attempt I have disconnected the battery completely and am now running it only on the power adapter, I don't know if this will work but I need to do something...What could cause a problem like this, all of my settings are correct my power settings are set to always on with no hibernation.Any help will be wonderful. Thanks

Answer:Computer dies Randomly (Battery also dead) [PICS]

Maybe the battery just went bad. The only way I can think of to test it would be to try the battery in another Lenovo 3000 or to try a new battery in your Lenovo 3000.

Recently my display went blank and I had my gpu (AMD HD7700 series) repaired from a local store nearby. After that I started noticing weird lines on the screen when I'm surfing internet or watching videos.HTML5 videos makes my screen go crazy.I can hear the sounds but the display is full of lines.Another thing is that when I play games or multitask for a while the computer dies without any warning.Trust me it's so annoying.Sometimes I can play for like 3-4 hrs without any crashes.I thought this could be due to low memory and upgraded to extra 4GB of ram(total of 8GB now).Even now when I try to run big games like killing Floor 2 , I could play for like 10 to 20mins without any fps drop or lagspikes. After that it dies without any error.I've tried searching for solutions and found out it might be due to faulty psu but my pc works fine when I don't play games.I'm planning to give it to a nearby tech specialist for repair.Just came here for some guidance.Any suggestion would be helpful,Thanks!sorry for my bad English

Hi, you guys. Here's some of my system info.HP Pavilion 6623.Celeron processor : 533mhzCore version :         4.06Installed memory:   256mbWindows XP  operating systemThis is an old computer, but its what I've got. It was running fine, no crashes or problems until I had this guy install more memory and wipe the old stuff from it. He installed Windows XP, SP3, and the extra memory. So it changed from Win98, with 128 mbs ram to Windows XP with 256 mbs. Upgrades are cool huh? Well....I got charter cable to hook me up with some internet and my "new" computer starts out fine. But it won't play some of the games I download, probably processor speed too slow, but will play some. IF it ever starts the game I can play. Recently its started shutting down and rebooting right in the middle of a great game. javascript:replaceText('%20???',%20document.forms.postmodify.message);Steams me up. Just stops and then reboots. I noticed that my I.E.8 crashes ALOT. Sometimes during browsing, or gaming, or in the last part of a download. I finally read somewhere to change settings so that it won't auto reboot. That's when I get ERROR MESSAGESTOPpage_fault_in_nonpaged_area0x00000050then tech info(0x80461400,0x00000000, 0x805679E1,0x00000000)       (during downloaded game it crashed)Message advised me to try disabling BIOS shadowing or caching.Went to (phoenix)BIOS setup but was unable to find any w... Answer:computer shuts down during downloaded games, online games, randomly it seems.!?!

well, first, those errors are the type you would see with bad RAM. the installed RAM might be incompatible. Personally, I have a 350Mhz (well, now it's 475Mhz...) Machine with 256MB and it ran XP no problems (and a few games) and still runs well, when I use it. It might not necessarily be that the RAM is bad but rather that you either have a mismatched pair of RAM sticks or the motherboard might simply dislike the new stick.Another thing that could be causing this is your drivers; also, since most of your issues appear to occur only while using the net, it could be a problem with the Wireless device your using (is this a USB device?).

Maybe this is a hardware issue?

Answer:Win XP randomly Dies

You can test the PSU with a multimeter. Do a search on the web and you will find info on how to do this. Also, make sure the memory you put in is good. Download memtest. You'll need to put it on a bootable floppy. Then boot from the floppy and run it. It will run continously. Leave that running overnight. If it is the memory it will tell you. And if it is a problem with Winxp you'll know it because the system won't have locked up. If it does lock up the problem isn't Winxp. But rather a hardware issue.

I just received my new X1 Carbon yesterday. When I booted it up the first time the computer died after I set up username and password in Windows. Next time the same screen appeared but the username was ofcourse taken already. I logged into windows and the computer died. After 10-20 HDD checks the computer logs into windows and I can install some software (Visual Studio etc), but then it just dies again. Sometimes it can't even login to windows before it dies.  I've tried to format and reinstall windows but it doesn't help, sometimes I can use it for one hour, and sometimes just for 10 seconds.  I can't really say that I can see a pattern in this whether I'm using the AC chord or not.. I've also done a memory check and a harddrive check without any errors. I guess I have to return it and wait for a new one.. really disappointing =(  Any ideas Lenovo?

Answer:X1 Carbon randomly dies

>>  Sometimes it can't even login to windows before it dies.  When this happened to me on my PC a couple years ago, the problem was my one of my fans had died (either the power supply's fan or a system fan; can't remember which.) .  The system was shutting itself off as a defensive reaction to overheating.

Before i start, I am Running:

WinXP-Pro, Service Pack 3
2.22 GHz Athlon 64 3500+ Processor
2 Gigs of RAM
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT Graphics Card

What appears to happen is that once in a blue moon, without any prior warning, the entire computer will lock up solid for about 15 seconds then black screen me and none of my input or output devices will work. That means, Mouse, Keyboard, sound, Monitors, etc. They all die simultaneously. The odd part is, the computer is still working as far as I can tell as the system doesn't even hiccup.

It WAS doing this more than it is now, however it seems to have reduced somewhat. I'm guessing that it has something to do with my power supply as me replacing the 350 watt supply with a 550 watt supply (for a completely different problem) seems to have reduced the occurence of this issue. Instead of happening once or twice a week it now happens once or twice every 2 or 3 weeks. It's still annoying when it happens. Anyone have any clue?

When you boot back into your machine...check the event logs and see whats happening just prior to the failure. If you can, check after a couple of occurrences and see if there are any similarities that might point you in the right direction. Anybody else have an idea?

Hello,
I have a user with a dell latitude d620 laptop. Her external usb mouse stops working every few hours-- apparently when she's doing nothing out of the ordinary, the "installing new hardware" dialog comes up randomly, and when she cancels out of it, the mouse will stop working at a slightly later time. Even the red LED light on the bottom of the mouse goes out.

We've tried different models USB mice, attaching it directly to a USB port on the laptop, via the USB port on the laptop dock, and even with a USB->PS/2 adapter via the dock's PS/2 port.... all with the same results. Every time, when the mouse is working fine, it'll pop up the 'installing new hardware' dialog, and afterwards it just suddenly stops working.

Any ideas? I have no idea what's going on.

She's running windows xp sp3 with symantec endpoint, all the usual office software, really nothing out of the ordinary.
thanks,
Mitch

Hello. I am in need of advice once again. I'm staying at my uncles house who uses Keyon internet service so its like broadband with some sort of dish? Anyways...

The speeds were pretty random and slow. Spikes of 3000 pings and averages of 600. Updated the firmware (7 years old) and average is under a hundred now. However the internet still just completely dies for random amounts of time... 2 seconds to a few minutes. Pings timeout to google or yahoo but not my router.

As far as the setup goes, there is a dish or antennae they have aimed a little dish on the roof towards a few miles away. The "modem" is in a plastic box attached to it. The cable runs into literally the cheapest "splitter adapter" ive ever seen, which wont work if you hook up the modem line into "data out" and the router line into "data in", which confuses me in the first place. Shouldn't that be the other way around?

Anyways, I tried wifi and wired connection. I didn't try to bypass the router completely but I don't think it will make a difference. I decided to get a ladder and look at the "modem" and I was a little shocked to say the least. I opened up the big plastic thing that stores it and it literally is just a piece of like motherboard mounted with one little screw, covered in ladybugs and cobwebs. So I sighed and just left it alone.

So now, average ping is very tolerable. 50-100. Speed is at about 2mbps which is fine. I just don... Read more

Question: Y500 randomly dies

Hello, Borught a y500 on amazon a few months ago, its runs great. However, the laptop suddenly just dies randomly, no blue screen, no shut down menu. It just dies, I reboot and check event viewer and its says it crashed(kennel-power). So then I checked for viruses, ran scans for chkdsk, sfc /scannow, and memory diagnostics, everything was fine. It also didn't overheat since the laptop died without gaming at all. The barrtery was plugged in as well I reset windows 8 just to check if its the OS's fault. It just died again today. If it's a hardware issue, what can I do to find out what component of hte computer is wonky? Would the limited warranty help me?

I recently got my Grandad's which works fine and has great parts but it does not play games hence he passed it on to me. It can do everything apart from play games. It will sometimes play games for hours and hours and other times it will just freeze up on the main menu of the game. I have tried disc games and downloaded games, both do the same, i have tried turning up the fan speeds on the GPU's and still it freeze's. I have tested the RAM with Windiag and it comes up fine, stress tested the processor and tested the HDD's thy all came up fine. The only thing that might be wrong is the PSU which might be providing not enough power or it is faulty in some way or the sound card which is no longer supported by creative but then again it does easily play movies and music fine. Can anyone help? Here are the specs: http://speedcap.net/img/36cc6ea5a6629bdd6f98b6303a3650db/884bb6a5.png

Okay, so I posted a thread previous someone tried to give me advice, didn't help seeing as how I checked out everything that he said to.

The only time the computer crashes is during gaming (World of Warcraft, Counter Strike, etc.)

Computer Specs
-XFX 6500GT Fatality (Nvidia)
-500W PSU
-2 Gigs of DDR2 Ram
-K9AGM3-FD/FIH MSI Motherboard
-5 Fans (1 Graphics Card, 2 Case Fans [1 Front, 1 Back], Processor fan, PSU Fan)
-2 16x CD Drives
-Hard Drive (Sata) 250 GB, 3 Gb/s, 16 MB Cache, 7200 RPM
-Processor AMD 690 X2

I have absolutely NO idea what BIOS is for, I've seen the Live Update 3 under the motherboard I have and was curious if I should do this update, not all my hardware is MSI, would this destroy my computer in anyway?

If it doesn't would it be possible to fix the problem? Would this make all the aspects in the computer cooperate and actually work? The specs on the computer are beyond what I should need to play a game such as that.

Answer:Computer Randomly reboots during games.

Also I need to know if reinstalling the operating system would help.

Try System Restore to the date/entry for installing PC Booster. This will undo any registry changes made by that ***** program!

In future, never use any of these performance enhancing or "overclocking" programs. This is procisely what can happen.

Repost of the System Restore doesn't work.

Hi!

My internet connection on my Vista machine dies after a few hours. If I restart, the connection will work again, but will die after a few hours again. I've used my computer with several different routers and for example in my friends' home network so I know the problem is in my computer because the internet connection always dies the same way. Usually if I'm listening music from my Spotify, that connection oddly stays on with that, same goes with some java based games like net poker and so on...messenger connection problem diagnostics say that problems are in the ports. Sometimes i've just been too tired to reboot and just kept doing something else with my computer without the internet connection then maybe an hour later the connection comes back to life. This problem is getting kinda old already that it's not funny anymore. Would appreciate if somebody had even a slight suggestion to repair this problem.

Hi! T420 touchpad dies and trackpoint keeps on working. Sometimes after some time the trackpoint may also die. After boot, touchpad & trackpad recovers and is working maybe for an hour, or a day. Then it reoccurs. This happens randomly on some T420's, while other T420's doesnt encounter it never-ever. Any tips how to troubleshoot this one? Not sure if I should post this here or the networking forum but I assume some nice patron will direct me to the correct place if I'm wrong.

For a while now, and for no apparent reason, my internet connection completely dies. But, it's only to my computer. My computer will slow down DRAMATICALLY, stuttering violently as I try to do anything. But if I restart my computer it comes back on as if no problem was ever there.

I am hooked through a router through an ethernet cable and my wife is connected to it wirelessly and she is never affected.

Is this an XP problem, hardware, or maybe even the hardwire ports of my router?

Help! =(

Hi everyone, I've been having the same problem for months now and have finally decided to try to get some help after attempting multiple fixes. I use both a wired connection and wireless connection on my new laptop depending on where I am in the house (if I'm hooked up to my docking station its wired, otherwise i'll be on the wireless). The wired connection works fine, but the wireless connection will often completely die on me without any apparent cause. I'm pretty sure the problem is with my laptop due to the following reasons:

1) My dad uses the same connection when he works from home, and told me he doesn't have any problems with it.
2) Just for testing services, I tried using a neighbors WiFi connection, and received the same results.

I've tried changing my DNS server between OpenDNS, Google's DNS, etc. and have not had any luck. I made sure my wireless cards weren't sleeping by un-checking 'allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'. I uninstalled Hamachi to make sure it wasn't messing up any of my settings and still had the same problems. I've updated all my drivers and even re-installed them.

Just to describe what exactly happens during these disconnects, any live connections prior to the point where the internet disconnects stay alive (usually, such as Skype calls, AIM connections, certain games, etc.) and will stay open until closed. Web pages behave in a similar fashion, and in fact will ... Read more

I've had  a X41 Tablet for about 2.5 years now.  Just recently in the past month it will randomly die on me, meaning it will lose all power (No shutdown screen, nothing).  If I try to turn it back on, nothing will happen.  If I plug in the AC adapter, still no power.  The only way I can get it to start back up is if I remove the battery, then place it back in forcefully or wiggle the battery around while it is back in the slot.  If it does restart, the battery is still charged like nothing had happened.  So  it isn't the battery losing it's charge.  I even tried putting another battery in from one of the X41 tablets in our office after the computer had died and it wouldn't start.  My thoughts are it has something to with the connection on the board.  Any other thoughts or ways to fix this? Thanks,JohnMessage Edited by cranjx on 06-11-2008 10:34 AM

Well... I had a Win 7 Ultimate 64bit on this very machine (the one in my preferences) for almost 3 years until the moment when I said to myself: OK, time to refresh. And that only because my port 80 would die sometimes....sometimes thrice an hour for 10-15 min, sometimes twice a day. But it would happen every day. I re-installed with the hope it was just a bad Win installation but it happened again after just an hour in. What I tried? Well, I certainly tried a new router, but it didn't help. I knew it wouldn't since I also run Linux and OS X in home network and none is affected by this. I scanned old and new Win 7 with every possible malware finder, antivirus..etc. Even bought one (I have an "allergy" when it comes to A/Vs and such in general).. I went drastic today, I disconnected all devices (hdds, usbs, dvdroms, pcie) just to prove my point.. left a single 60 GB SSD with brand new win 7 with default drivers .. Took several hours but I still lost port 80 (it seems to be just port 80 since only browsers and windows LIVE are affected on my system)...Skype, FTP, rsync.. they'll all work just fine while nothing else web-wise does.

Help please! Any suggestions will be tested and reported.

Answer:Port 80 dies randomly, everything else works

What do you mean by "port 80 dies"? skype, ftp all works as you say. So not a tcp/ip routing/connection problem.
If you're having problems do:
in command prompt:

Got my X1 Carbon yesterday. Does have the loose clickpad. Worse issue - it would power down randomly - as in you are typing and suddenly it goes completely dead, as in "lights out" or someone pull the plug type dead. Also does not sleep properly - often when it goes to sleep it dies and you get an improper windows shutdown warning when you restart it. Happens both with AC power and battery power. Was on hold for 1.5 hours trying to reach a sales rep to make an exchange and got disconnected. Tried to do factory restore just to see what will happen but F11 on startup does not work. The notebook looks great but otherwise I can't say I am very happy with my experience.

Answer:Defective X1 Carbon - dies randomly

Way to go Lenovo... 20th Anniv. flagship model and units are shipping with missing parts, poor build quality/loose screws and who knows what other issues will appear in another week. If mine isn't perfect when I receive it on Monday it will be my last Lenovo. Your long-time Thinkpad users are very disappointed... What a joke! EDIT: Now it looks like we're getting DOA's... Awesome. Who's building these things?!

I've had this laptop over a year now, and just recently I've noticed when I leave it on a while and come back, either the audio of the entire laptop will die, or online videos just won't play. After restarting it goes back to normal until a few hours later when it happens again. I'm not sure what to do here. Can anyone help me out?

Answer:Audio/Video randomly dies?

You are not alone with this problem, since the last windows 8 update there is sound problems with a lot of PCs. You can try this quick solution here :

You just need to enter to the Control Panel -> security and System -> System -> Device Manager

Then look for "sound, video and game controllers" put the cursor over it press right-click and select "scan for hardware changes"

3 secs after that you will have your sound working again, you gonna need to repeat this procedure every time the sound is gone in your PC and till now it always worked to me.

This should solve your problem for now, we need to wait for Microsoft's next windows 8 update, it hopefully will fix the problem in a more permanent way.

Greetings.

I've just bought the components for a new PC, and a friend has built it for me. Everything works fine for hours at a time, I can be playing games, browsing the internet, whatever. Then all of a sudden the PC cuts out, exactly as it would in a power cut, except for an almighty fan noise that kicks in and stays on until I hold the power button down to force the power off. When I say an almighty fan noise, I mean the loudest noise I've ever heard a PC make. I thought it was a hair-dryer turning itself on in the room the first time it happened.

Temperature doesn't seem to be an issue, everything's always around 40 degrees, and before I took it home the guy who built it stress tested it for hours up to 90 degrees without any problem. It has always cut out during web browsing (never whilst gaming) although that's probably just a coincidence.

Any suggestions? I literally have no clue whatsoever, what with being somewhat PC illiterate.

I have a Dell Inspiron 15-5547 running Win 8.1. Every now and then the scroll feature (two fingers vertical swipe to scroll the screen), and the two finger tap for right click, will stop working. When this happens, all the other features on the touchpad seem to work. If I restart the laptop it starts working again. I've tried going into services.msc and setting 'Human Interface Devices" to automatic startup, but it doesn't help. There's something else pretty weird also... When I go into the system tray (lower right), right click the touchpad icon, and select Touchpad Properties, it takes me into the Dell Pointing Devices windows. Inside this window, there is a sliding switch to disable the touchpad. When I disable it, the touchpad still works. Weird. Does anybody have any ideas how I can get this sorted out. I'm also using a wireless USB mouse on the same laptop, not sure if that makes a difference. Thanks.

Answer:Touchpad scroll dies randomly

Hi Jools

Personally I would look to see what touchpad driver version you are using and then either update it with an in-place update, or uninstall (my favourite option, then install new driver) the current driver and then re-install, as it may just be a slight corruption.

Latest driver HERE
Also a thought, when the touchpad stops with the scroll feature, had your laptop been left not used for a period of time, like hibernation?

Ok well lets start from the beginning... About a year ago I bought my computer the OS was Windows XP... Everything was working perfectly.. no errors no nothing...

Then a few months before May of this year my friend gave me Windows Vista.. i installed it of course.. then I slowly realized that it was a mistake.. so then i wanted to go back to Windows XP Pro.. so i did that by Formating my computer and then reinstalled Windows XP. After all was said and done i reinstalled the drivers and everything... But now randomly my computer crashes.. Like lets say theres an Animated Gif image of someone running.. it'll crash my comp after 2mins or so of looking at it.. Then SOMETIMES when i scroll through iTunes itll crash my computer.. But it crashes the most when i run a Java based game.. Such as RuneScape or Conflict Online.. I'm really not sure what happened when i formated my computer, I'm not a guru of any sort... And when i first had Windows XP it didn't crash or anything, same goes with when i had Vista..

I really have no clue on why its doing this...

When it crashes it sometimes just.. Reboots.. Goes to a black screen.. or just freezes...

I would really love it if anyone could help me out..

Hi, my computer randomly shuts down when playing games. The inside of the computer is clean and I really don't know what could be wrong. Maybe a power issue or my crappy case? I've checked through similar threads and I can't find any solutions that helped. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here are my specs

OS: Windows 7 Professional
MB: Gigabyte
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Dual Core 3.2GHz
GPU: nVidia Geforce GTX 285 BFG OCX
RAM: 4GB
PSU: Alpha Power 450w Power Supply Unit ATX
Case: EZ Cool

Answer:Computer randomly shuts down when playing games

Hi

Are your drivers upto date, mainly the graphics card? also check Device Manager for any yellow ! marks.

Does this only happen when playing games or has the random shutdown happened when using other applications?

It could well be your PSU is a little underpower for all the hardware you have connected, as even USB devices can draw power

What are your system temps and you can use Speedfan to let us know these as random shutdowns can be where the temp of motherboard , CPU and GPU hit a high.

In Event Viewer at the exact time of a shutdown are there any error warnings, likely in System or Application logs, if so paste them into a notepad file and attach to your next post as per HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post [/QUOTE]

For about 3 years my computer has been restarting itself without warning. It only restarts when I play certain games. Almost every time my computer restarts, there are a bunch of vertical, grey, lines/bars running down the screen. I can play Team Fortress 2 for almost 4 hours straight, and not a single problem. I can only play Skyrim for about 15-30 minutes without the computer restarting. The sooner I can get a reply the better, it is SO ANNOYING to have your computer restart after only 30 minutes of gaming!

Answer:Computer Randomly Restarts Only When Playing Certain Games

Welcome
We can test further, later, but sounds like graphics card/driver.
Go to search by the start button, and type device manager.
In DM look for small yellow markers, update those drivers
No, markers, go to the web site of your graphics card and update the driver.

Games such as, Mortal Kombat X and Watch_Dogs. Have been giving me problems lately that I have never experienced on my computer before.  I haven't changed the GPU and CPU since last month and everything was fine.  Then it started to shutdown by itself without warning while playing some games.  I did a little research and found that it might have been a low amount of thermal paste when I installed the CPU last month, I went to radio shack 2 days ago from this post, and got myself a new little canister of it and applied it to the CPU when installing the heatsink on top.  I booted it up and started to launch Mortal Kombat X, but then, it was still going on.  I have no idea what is causing this, it is not an overheating issue as far as I am concerned.

As the title saids, my computer freezes randomly when playing games. In my case "Gothic III".This is what happens: I start my game, no problems there. After playing a while (, maybe after an hour or so), my computer freezes. No hints on when it will happen, no symptoms, nothing. My screen is freezed and most of the times I hear an annoying sound as that freezes too. -.-What's weird is, some days it happens and some days it doesn't.But when it occures, it's a few times in a row.A few moments ago when I tried again, it happened 3 times.Every time I retry it happens alot earlier.I searched the forum here and I noticed somewhere I could try to clean my RAM slots. I did it with a small brush (hope that doesn't screw things up?).Also to be sure I used HijackThis. Processor: AMD Phenomon(tm)II x4 965 Processor 3.40 GHz
Ram: 12gb
Graphics card: Nvidia Geforce gtx 550 ti
Cpu model number: ep-600ne-xv

Answer:Computer randomly turns off when I play games

Shut off as in totally just powers off? And only with graphic intensive games, normal use (web browsers, office, etc) run fine?
Could be your video card is getting too hot or perhaps the CPU is. Do you have to wait a few minutes after it shuts itself down before it'll boot back up? If so sounds like a heat problem.

I get random restarts when playing games.
Is this something to do with windows 10 or Nvidia?

Not great with computers but I've only been having this problem the past week or so.

I have done a clean reboot and all that but it keeps happening.

Here are some errors I get in Event Viewer:

I also posted this under a related thread (http://forums.techguy.org/games/678689-computer-just-shut-off-while.html )
but I suspect that I may get better results by starting a new thread.

As the subject states, my PC will randomly shut off. This usually happens when I'm in the middle of playing a game...or the demo/trial of a game. It's happened with several different games, so I don't think it's game specific.

The most recent occurrence was yesterday when I was playing Civilization IV (and had been playing for several hours). All of a sudden...the computer shut off, no warning, no error, nothing, just OFF. I waited a little while and turned it back on again, still no error message. I turned on SpeedFan and checked NVMonitor to see where my temps were at, and the video card seemed a bit high...around 71 C...and the temp stayed up around that until I turned it off for the night. This is the first time the computer has done this in over a month.

Today my GPU temp is running around 61 C, but I have only been browsing the web (email and this forum). Prior to now the usual "idle" temp for the GPU was around 53 C.

There is plenty of air flow through my case and minimal dust (just cleaned it again this morning). The fan on the card is working. All of my drivers are up to date.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Vanessa

Hello,

I have recently had a problem with my computer for the past couple of months. The problem being every game i own crashing, and my CPU blue screening even though i have the settings required for the games, the games run very well, but the crashes come in randomly and unpredictably. I bought this computer already pre-built, i just added the Geforce GTX 650 graphics card about the same time the crashes started happening, i'm thinking the installation of the new graphics card is the problem but i don't know for sure. I've tried updating all my drivers and even ran the "Who Crashed" software to determine my crashes, i have looked online for the answer, but none have worked for me so far. ill provide a list of the crash reports below along with my PC specs. the two examples are what most of my crash reports say, there are more crashes than just these two i just felt the need for repetitive crash reports are unnecessary:

Hello, so whenever i am playing games my screen randomly minimizes the game out of no where every 5-10 minutes and for some reason this causes my internet to not work. My wifi will say its on but when i try to connect to the internet it tells me page not found and so. This problem has been going on for a while now and even when i first boot up my computer when i try to load a game i.e. World of Warcraft or even Battlefield 4, it'll scan for updates on the game but the download never fully goes through it just keeps on scanning until i restart my computer then everything works perfectly fine until the screen minimizes while gaming then i usually have to restart. My internet will also randomly go out while browsing the internet and it will say my wifi is connected and i have a strong signal. Any help will be appreciated! Thanks!

Answer:Games Randomly Minimizing/ Computer acting up

Are you running any game boosters?
Does the game terminate itself upon minimizing?
Are you running any browsers in the background? If so, go to Run > MSConfig > Startup > and uncheck everything. Now goto your Services tab in MSConfig, and uncheck all NON-MICROSOFT services.

You see, if there are any additional programs in the background, it can be a possibility the hatever they're doing (like refreshing themselves etc) could bethe reason why your games closes down.

Also, how much RAM do you have?

I recently built a new computer which i have done on many occasions (but its been at least 5 years since my last build) I play quake live perfectly on my other build but with this computer it constantly crashes. I've run memtest 86, windows memory test, changed the cpu usage, adjusted memory in bios. I've played other games such as crysis 2 which is a lot more demanding than quake live without this problem.

I read a thread that dated approximately 1 year ago with a guy that a similar problem to do with a driver but i dont have a minidump folder or zip file on my computer.

Any help direction would be greatly appreciated.

I also get the error kernel 41 which i believe could be a number of things.

please help.

I have this Acer Aspire 5755G and I installed Windows 8 in it. When my OS was installed I wanted to play some games. So I installed Steam to be entartained. However, whenever I try to play a game and I am playing hapily, it can randomly shut down my entire computer. This is really annoying especially when I am feeling comfortable and thinking that it will not happen. This problem was also occuring when I was running Windows 7 and that's the reason I installed Windows 8, to see if the problem got fixed.
I don't know what to do so this is the reason I am in the forums asking.
One more thing, ERecovery won't work because PQSERVICE is not in my disk after installing Windows 8.
Thanks for your time if you reached this part after reading everything.

Answer:Computer randomly shuts down while playing games.

Sounds like your Laptop s overheating which might be why your machine shuts down all of a sudden.

If you can play the game with a decent Frames per second then all of sudden it shuts down.

Couple of ways to solve it is buy a cooling fan for your laptop.

The major thing is to get a air duster and blow the dust out. Laptops are more sensitive to dust which causes it to overheat.

Also download Speedfan to get Temperature readings of your CPU and GPU to find out.

Basically, while i'm playing a games, as Elder Scrolls Online or Fifa 17, randomly my computer deicide to restart it self...
In the event viewer that's what i found:

I'm not using any overclock mode, and the power cable is connected alone in the socket on the wall.
Some of my friends suggest me to put the PSU, cable alone straight on the wall, and I did it, but nothing change.
The problem doesn't happen all the time, it's so random...
Tell me if you need more information.
Thank you guys.

Answer:Computer restarts randomly when playing games!

Typical problems that you can try to mitigate: Get the latest drivers for your NVIDIA card and install them. Be sure your system is clear of 'dust bunnies' - use canned air to clean out any dust residing on fans and heat sinks in your computer system. Next, run this command from an Administrator Command Prompt (right-click Start button to get to this) - dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

After running the program, if it comes up with a message stating that it cannot correct problems it finds, you will need to let us know about it.

Problems that these instruction help alleviate is bad / corrupted video driver install, overheating issues, data corruption of Windows 10 OS. The three most common issues of random rebooting while playing video intensive programs. Last two things to check require a lot of patience - move some programs and data files from drive C to drive D (make sure your primary boot drive has at least 10% of the total space of the drive free - you look good here), and do a memory diagnostic check through the Windows diagnostic startup menu.

I have just bought a new computer with the following specs
3.00 Ghz Intel core 2 Duo
ATI Radeon HD3870X2
4gb DDR3 Ram
500gb Hard driver
Asus P5E3 Mobo
650W Power Supply
Windows Vista 64 bit

The while playing games such as Call of Duty 4 and World in Conflict I can play for about 5 mins to 30 mins then my computer would randomly shut off and restart.
The weird thing is that it plays fine in other games like Crysis on high graphisc and I can play for hours and have no problems.
The CPU tempearature is about 50-60C while playing and the GPU is about 70-80
Does anyone know what the problem may be?
Thanks

Answer:My computer is freezing randomly. But only when I'm playing games.

Freezing under games is most likely due to the increased load put on your processor. If your system is overclocked (fairly likely if it is custom-built) then voltages/settings in the bios need to be appropriately adjusted within safe limits to maintain the overclock. If it is not overclocked than the problem could be due to overheating as a result of inadequate cooling. At the very least get the dust bunnies off the inside of your PC and fan filters. Try temporarily running the games with the computer side panel removed, if this helps then inadequate internal airflow is most probably the culprit. These suggestions are oversimplifications but should get you started.

Hello everyone, my computer has been having random crashes recently whenever i play games. Sometimes it crashes after 2 hours, and sometimes it crashes after 30 minutes. I've checked the temperature and everything, and its all below 60 C, so it shouldn't be overheating.

Answer:Computer randomly crashes when playing games.

Hello Fenrich -
I hope that I have the correct version of "Games" that you have problems with.
Normally this is not a first option, but try to disable UAC while you play a game for a while and see the result.

Post back with results, and any other Event Viewer error if it fails again -

Thank You -

Hey guys, I've been having some problems with my PC restarting whilst running games. This is not just high demand games, but some low demanding ones too (eg. lego harry potter, League of Legends). It simply just powers off and starts back up instantly without reason or warning.

I read through a few similar threads and noticed that the PSU was a recurring problem for others with similar problems, so I upgraded from a Corsair VS 550 to a Corsair RM 650, but the problem was still occuring.
I then figured it must be the CPU or the mobo, so i upgraded my mobo from an ASRock H81 PRO BTC to and ASRock B85M Pro3, but still no fix.
I ran memtest86 to check my ram through 12 passes over 14 hours and there was no errors found.
I have disconnected the reset switch from my case to the mobo and tried a number of other things like updating drivers. The issue still persists when i remove my GPU, and I have monitored my CPU temperatures during gameplay and they rarely exceed 45 degrees Celsius. I have tried running from different powerpoints and on different powerboards to see if that was the issue. I have done a total reinstall of windows, only installing the necessary drivers and downloading 1 game (Fallout 4). I have tested with 1 stick of RAM removed at a time. I have stress tested the CPU with Prime95, and it handled the tests fine. None of these things have been conclusive and I'm not sure what step to take next. Please help!

Hi everyone, I'm Alex93, I'm new to the forum, and I was hoping that you guys could help me with a problem that's been annoying me a lot over the past few months.
My computer crashes randomly. My computer initially started to crash when I was gaming, and now it crashes at any given time randomly when I am using my computer. It was rare at first but now it happens like clockwork at least once a day. I get loads of error screens with:

Nv4_disp.dll
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

or

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

It crashes almost immediately when booting up MW2, and after a few minutes of play with Team Fortress 2, but also happens sporadically whilst doing nothing in particular. The problem disappeared for two weeks after installing an nVidia 8800 gtx, then randomly started again worst than before. If anyone could take a look at the latest minidumps and give some advice on how to solve the problem, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:Computer Crashes Randomly and with Games - Minidump available

nv4_disp.dll is indeed identified as a probable cause in one of your minidump files.

RtkHDAud.sys, Realtek HD Audio sound driver, is another one.

Make sure you have the latest drivers for both. If so, uninstall and reinstall them.

Answer:Computer keeps crashing only when running games or randomly

SYMFW.SYS a file in Symantec Firewall is one of the files causing your crashes. Uninstall Norton and use a free version of AVG and Zone Alarm. Also KMIXER.SYS caused a crash which is a sound card driver. If after you remove Norton you still get blue screens then uninstall your sound card, delete the drivers (while in safe mode) then reinstall the card and drivers.

hello

whenever i load up a game ( counterstrike, wow, crysis have been tested ) my computer shuts off. that's it. it just shuts off, i start it up, it does it again. it happened out of *nowhere*. i've ran these games for a year and a half with no trouble, ever. i've ran these in windowed mode as well and get the same results. it's usually 10-20 seconds before it goes off, never at the same exact point.

my case is always about 30c, don't know cpu temp.

xp home
dual core e6600 cpu
8800gtx evga
razer ac-1 sound card
ocz 850watt ps
680i evga mobo

all drivers are updated. i have absolutely no idea why this is happening. however, carom3d is a full screen game as well and it isn't affected. i can do anything else and the computer doesn't crash.

please help

Answer:help with computer randomly shutting off when loading games.

Sounds like either the cpu or the video card is overheating.

Perhaps the bios has a cpu temp setting?

Hello there,
I've been pondering around this problem for quite a while now and I finally decided to inquire the mighty crowds of computer wisdom i.e. you all

I've had this exact same problem in my previous system (with Windows 7 32-bit and quite a bit different internals) but it wasn't nearly as frequent as it is now (with Windows 7 64-bit and brand new CPU/MB/RAM/GPU) - however, this problem never happened on my previous box while it had Windows XP installed for a short while. Namely, the audio in Windows would stop working at random, every app that uses an audio interface would freeze when attempting to access any sink, I can't change the volume or mute anything, and I cannot even reset the Windows Audio service (reset times out) when that happens - the only solution is to reboot after which everything works just fine. The only difference between my old system and this one is that now I rarely get the reset procedure to 'freeze' on 'explorer.exe - Playing log-off sound...' (requiring to force restart to continue the process), but now it more often hangs at 'Shutting down...' screen requiring a physical restart.

My audio stack consists of the integrated sound (disabled, I don't need it, but in my previous setup it was enabled) and two USB-based sound sinks, namely Logitech Z Cin?ma speakers (Default Device) and Logitech G930 headset (Default Communications Device). Both are connected directly to the motherboard USB ports so it's not a problem with wonky USB hubs.

Answer:Windows audio randomly dies (probably USB-related)

Hiyya inco and welcome for starters I am definitely no expert mate I run a straight forward Asus Xonar DG card (the Xonar supports 7:1 systems) with my Ivy B with a Logitec Z 506 speaker set up and I have no probs at all, and it is a fairly cheap card at that.
Now I don't know what your audio set up is and it sounds like Ben Hur to me but just as a suggestion why not try a different brand card? I just really like the Asus control module that comes with mine and Asus do a really nice range of sound cards.

I am just getting a gut feeling the Logitec card is not the full dollar.

As the title says, my mouse stops working for a couple of seconds and then starts working perfectly again. It mainly happens when I am playing BF3, the game freezes for a second, then I hear the usb-removal sound Windows makes and the game unfreezes but the mouse is dead, then game freezes again for a second and mouse starts working. During the moment mouse is dead all other USB connected things works, only mouse that dies.
It has happened a few times before when im not in any game.

Why is this happening? I have never had any problem with this before.
I have tried putting my mouse a different USB port and it helped for a day or two and then it happened again.

I have had this same problem a few months ago. Although it happened with my mouse and keyboard simultaneously. My main harddrive was going bad. I replaced it and have not had the problem since. It was rather confusing at first as I had never seen these symptoms before from a bad harddrive.

Hi there,

I can't seem to figure this problem out. Every so often (from seconds to a couple minutes) my internet connection will fail, but only for less than a second. Typically no one would even notice this, but it becomes a problem when you use software like Messenger or you play games online. The disconnection is long enough to sign you off.

I've been watching a ping I set to yahoo.com for a good 10 minutes, and sure enough, there are occasional spots where for just 1-3 attemps it will time out, then get replies just fine again.

I use a wired ethernet connection, not wireless. The ethernet port is part of my motherboard, its a fairly modern motherboard, not an old one, and I made sure the driver for it was up to date. Any ideas?

Hi Everyone

In my previous house I would lose connection to the internet about 2-3 times a week. Since moving into my new house it happens more like 5-15 times a day. The internet light on my modem goes out and the broadband light blinks on and off.

95% of the time when I lose the connection it is for less than 2 minutes. But on some occasions it can take a half hour to work again.

Some more info:
- It happens on all 6 computers/devices in my household at the same time. (2 Macs, Win7 PC, iPad, iPod, PS3).
- All devices are connected wirelessly to modem. But, I have also tried Ethernet and still have same problem.
- I have tried 2 modems (including a brand new one that my ISP sent after I complained).
- I have tried using different jack points and cables.
- When the connection fails, I am still able to wirelessly access my modems config page. So wifi connection is not the issue.
- My ISP sent a technician out. He replaced one cable out by the road, but this did not solve the problem.

I have spent a few hours over multiple days on the phone with my ISP. First they said there was no problem with the line. Then they said there is definitively something wrong with the line. Then nothing wrong, then something wrong. Finally after they monitored the line for 3 separate 24 periods, they decided that the problem was solved. And I thought so too... I had good connection for about 36 hours. But then it started failing again, so far today I have lost connection about 10 times... Read more

I have Lenovo T500 Thinkpad for around one year. The laptop started to die randomly without any notification, no blue screen, no shut down, it just dies as if there is no power to the laptop. First I thought it could be a problem with the battery so I replaced my battery with the battery of another Lenovo T500. Even after that the problem persisted. So I removed the battery and just connected the laptop to AC power. The laptop does not die any more and I didnt face any issues. What could cause a problem like this? Whenever I connect the battery, the battery icon on the task bar says its charging and even if I use the battery alone the laptop works fine for sometime until it dies randomly. Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks

My computer is being extremely odd right now. Randomly, usually while gaming but at other times also, it will just die. When this happens, it kinda just freezes while repeating the same sound on a loop. It loses all video and sounds like all the insides shut off. When it does this, hitting reset doesn't really work, and usually I cannot turn it off and back on. If I try, I get no beep in POST which indicates to me it would be CPU or MoBo...maybe a power supply?

If I unplug the power from the back for a minute, I can restart it and it will go through POST with the beep and all, and say CPU is unworkable or has been changed, and then play fine for anywhere between 5 minutes to many hours with no problems, then it will happen again.

I cannot tell what wattage my PS is. I built most of this computer about 5 years ago, and have since modded the power supply case, and lost the sticker. The CPU is the original one I got when I built it, the MoBo is 4 years old, and the video card is new.

Hi,
I recently built my PC straight from the build guide by Austin Evans on YouTube called the 'Neutron 2.0'. I got Windows 10 installed on my PC and it has been working poorly. Whenever I play a game downloaded from Steam, the entire computer will crash at random times, freezing and forcing me to restart the entire computer.

When I go to turn the computer back on it will repeatedly turn on and back off within a second. It will go through this cycle until I have to power down again.

I am not sure why the computer is having these problems. HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED.
Thanks.

Just got a new computer 2 days ago:

Alienware Aurora_r3
Intel Core i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40 Ghz
4.00 GB ram
Windows 7 (64bit)
Dual video cards, both AMD Radeon HD 6800 series, with latest catalyst drivers installed directly from the website

Whenever I try to run games in full screen mode (as opposed to windowed), after 2 to 5 minutes my computer will just turn off. No error messages, warning sounds, lights, anything.. it just turns off. Affected games include Starcraft2, WoW, League of Legends, that I have tested so far.

However, if I run these games in windowed mode, I can play without interruption with all graphic options turned to the max. Problem does not appear to be overheating, as the thermal indicator software that came with pre-installed never gets above 29°C.

Any ideas how to fix? I don't want to have to send it back 2 days after getting it

Answer:New computer randomly restarts when running games in fullscreen

Alienware has been known with plagued thermal problems.

You can check inside the case and see if there's any possible mis-directed air flows, and point the duct, or add the fan to that area and see if that helps.

Dual video cards are known to be overheat very easily. If you have three PCI-E slots, move the last HD6800 to the bottom and extend the Crossfire cable to there, and see if that actually remedy with that kind of problem.
Otherwise, send it back and complain that you were ripped off, and maybe they could fix it for free.
EDITED: There's other possible options;

- kill all tasks in task manager, or using the batch with " taskkill /F /IM "program name"
- update your directX
- Downgrade your catalyst driver version to the factory driver, or upgrade to the newest driver that is FROM ATI/AMD website. ( www.amd.com )
- leave your side case to open up the more air-flows in the computer.

Howdy,

Sounds like the laptop is getting too hot.....see if you blow the dust out of the place near the fan....and think about getting a cooling pad for the bottom of the laptop.

The driver you downloaded maybe the problem....please tell us the make and model of the laptop?

This has been a problem of mine since 2 years ago. At first, I didn't want to "try" to fix it because I thought it was just the load of spyware + regular computer usage. Then about a month ago, I attempted to fix it by just reformatting my computer and reinstalling everything. At first I thought this would work, but I notice it didn't. My computer specs are:

P4 2.2 GHz
GF4 Ti4600 128MB
1024 MB (2 x 512) PC2100 DDR RAM
Windows XP Pro w/ SP2

I know my computer is old and sucks. It's about 3.5 yrs old (at that time, it was top of the line!) and I don't plan to upgrade anytime soon... but maybe in the next 1-2 years. My problem is that whenever I play ANY video game (mostly 3D or graphics-intensive games), my computer will randomly restart SOMETIMES (not all of the time, but it happens frequently than coincidentally just a regular crash). It will usually do one of the following:

- Crash to desktop without notice
- Crash to desktop WITH notice (It is always a "memory corruption" type error)
- Computer restarts randomly in the middle of the game (I'll be playing and soon I will be saying wtf?)

After reformatting, the problem still exists. This restarting/crashing seems to happen more often with different games, too. The solutions I've tried include installing DIFFERENT graphics drivers to see if it's a driver problem, using a memory testing program to determine if my memory/RAM is failing, and last reinstalling the different games it crashes on.... Answer:Computer randomly crashing/restarting when playing games

I remember having a similar problem, it was my video card's gpu over heating. I would try searching for a program that tracks how hot your gpu or cpu gets, Im sorry that I don't know of such a program off hand. Your bios may tell you how hot your cpu gets but I don't think gpu (at least mine doesn't).

Also I've seen a problem like what is happening to you caused by the power supply, but how I fixed that was I swapped my power supply with another one to see if it was a power supply problem and sure enough it was. At that point I just bought a new power supply. Maybe if you have a extra power supply you can test to see if its your power supply that is failing.

Alright, i have this silly problem that whenever i'm playing most games the computer randomly shuts down; no error message, no warnings, no nothing, just shuts down in a split second with the screen going black. I also had rare cases where it rebooted itself on it's own.
But then there's another case where the whole computer freezes and the screen changes into blue lines. I have no idea what's causing this. Oh, and it doesn't shut down/freeze when i'm just browsing the web.

Here's my specs:
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate , 32 bit
Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5300 @ 2.60GHz, x64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10
Processor Count: 2
RAM: 2047 Mb
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series, 1024 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 305142 MB, Free - 117180 MB;
Motherboard: ASRock, G41M-S, ,
Antivirus: AntiVir Desktop, Updated and Enabled

This mostly happens when i play CS:S, Borderlands and Fallout 3. First started with Borderlands.

Here's my speedfan temps when doing nothing:

System: 38C (blue arrow)
CPU: 42C (green checkmark)
AUX: 35-37C (blue arrow)
HD0: 40C (green checkmark)
Core 0: 40-42C (tends to change into blue arrow, green checkmark or red arrow)
Core 1: 40-42C (same as Core 0)

Speedfan temps when running a game
System: 38C (blue arrow/green checkmark)
CPU: 45C (red arrow)
AUX: 37C (blue arrow)
HD0: 40C (green checkmark)
Core 0 and 1: 53C (fire)

I'm worried about the core temps...

Hi,
I recently built my PC straight from the build guide by Austin Evans on YouTube called the 'Neutron 2.0'.

Thanks.

When I play games from WoW with full graphics or crysis 2, Deus Ex...etc. My computer gives no warning, bluescreen or noise. It just restarts with the video card's fan revving up constantly. Screen is off, the computer has restarted but nothing shows up or beeps as if it's starting up...nothing except for the fan going crazy.

Additionally I tried to install the newest form of drivers from ati and right after installation the screen and computer freeze up with a couple of blocks on the screen shaking which forces me to restore it back. I figured it was a bad installation of windows 7 so I reformatted and still have the same problem. The card is supposed to run on low heat as per reviews and the case holds no heat whatsoever. Even if the 750w psu runs at 80% or 600w it should still run just fine. I'm starting to think it's a motherboard problem, any help would be appreciated.

Answer:My computer shuts off randomly while playing video games???

Welcome dtennisplaya.

Hi dtennisplaya, welcome to Major Geeks

Could you tell us what make/model GPU & motherboard you have installed.
From the info you have provided I'm guessing it's your power supply, I had a similar problem a few years ago when I installed an ATI HD 4870 1GB. Every time I played any game my PC would give me between about a minute to about ten minutes of stuttering gameplay, obviously not what I expected when I picked it :-D Basically I had a low quality PSU that just couldn't handle the load & cut out, thankfully it cut out rather than blowing out though. To make sure it was the PSU & not some kind of HDD error or Registry error I downloaded Advanced SystemCare Free & ran it to get rid of as many of the registry &/or disk errors as I could to rule them out (Deep Care these days). You could also try CCleaner Standard which used to be free :confused But It may still take care of the Registry errors at least.

Anyway after all that I still had the same problem, so I got myself a digital multi meter (attached pic) to test my PSU. You can pick these up anywhere if you live in USA (not jealous) or if you're having trouble finding one you could try an auto repair/parts type place like Halfords in the UK should have one & they're not to expensive, certainly cheaper than replacing your PSU only to find out that it wasn't the issue :-D

I'm not 100% on how to test a PSU with a multimeter, but here's ... Read more

I got this laptop 2 months ago and it worked just fine but lately it's been dying randomly (the battery was at 98%) for absolutely no reason, no prompts all i can hear is a sound coming from the hard disk just as if the laptop was force shut down by holding the power button key. The laptop temperatures weren't high at the time (mostly all components @ 45°C). I use this laptop for college and it's been REALLY unreliable & I can't return it at this time since I'm at a dorm and i don't think it would even get a RMA since it happens randomly (you can't expect it at all - i only had word and microsoft edge opened and poof it's dead) - also i can always start it again instantly but SOMETIMES it dies again in the booting process. Any help on what i should do?

Yet another problem with my peice of crap i call the "computer".

I got a new monitor at xmas, hoping to solve the problems i was haveing with my old one too no avail however.

Sometimes when im playing games etc it just looses the signal from the computer. Im using a 9800 pro 128MB graphics card, and cant understand why this is happening. The computer is still running fine though. It just wont display anything. Why could this be? I only got the card 3 months ago, it shoudlnt be doing this. It also at random intervals decides to artifact and under both circumstances i have to switch off for a while and wait before it will work again.

Things ive checked.

The card i sseated properly.
uninstalled it and reinstalled it
using latest drivers.
Using Direct X 9c
On board VGA automatically disables when AGP card is plugged in.
when uninstalled it seems to run fine from the motherboard connection (Hence im thinking dodgy card)
The car dis connected to the power supply as is nescessary.

Im totally stumped here. I can live with the situation but its not ideal, especially whe im playing gamesa and it just dies on me. Its as though the card is stopping sending the signal to my monitor.

Could this be a dodgy card? If so who do i contact about it? The place i bought the card from, or the manufacturer??

Any help would be great. Thanks.

I've been having an issue with my X270 laptop since I bought it. The laptop is running Windows 10. What happens is randomly (this can take weeks, or days) the trackpad and pointing stick completely stops working. The only solution is to uninstall the drivers and reinstall them using an external mouse. I've tried various versions of the drivers, including the latest, and it still continues to happen. Any solutions to fix this?

I've had this laptop for about 2 weeks, and have Windows 10.  A couple of days or so ago, I unplugged it and took it into another room to use.  It was on battery at least 6 hours with no problems.  It's been plugged in since then. I just looked at the battery meter and it shows only 35% power remaining.  Why is it not fully recharged by now?

Hello everyone. It has to have been over a year since I came here looking for help because I rarely have problems that are like this. My computer is freezing while playing games (low-end ones at that!). And sorry in advance for killing dial up users with my huge post!

Ok so here's the simple form of it:
1. I've checked for Malware of any kind first: none. Spybot search and destroy, ad-aware, and I use ccleaner(I recomend this program as an experienced PC user) for general stuff.
2. I disabled all uneeded applications(shouldn't have mattered, but still...) before running any games. Left only my wireless software and sound driver program.
3. I downloaded a temperature monitor for my hardware that acessed the built in stuff: all seems good as far as I can find the info for. My main concern was the CPU, that's clear for sure at 50dC.
4. I updated Windows with everything they had; minus the useless stuff, eg: sim card reader and Windows media player(<3 Winamp Pro.)
5. I updated my video card driver and installed Catylyst, which was my main reason for updating Windows(for .net framework updates).

Stuff I already tried to do:
1. Reinstall the below listed games that I've been using and/or testing my fixes with.
2. Notice a degredation issue with continued gameplay: nope. The amount of time before freezing seems to be random as it has been after 2 seconds once, and other times after a half hour or more(or sometime to my pleasure, not at all .)
3. Update... Read more

Lately it's been doing it when I get on FB games too. I can sit on my computer all day surfing the internet with no problems but as soon as I play a game it's all over. I sent my computer back to the manufacturer (Gateway) and they said they replaced everything and found no problems, but then again when I got it back it wasn't put back together correctly and the problem is still there. When I called them back to tell them about the issue they informed me that my warranty was expired!! PLEASE HELP! :cry:cry:cry:cry

What Windows version and Service Pack are you using?

If you are not playing games does your PC work ok, as in say using internet or a office document?

If you open Device Manager do you have any yellow ! marks by any device and if so by what?

When I first got my computer, it worked just fine, I played all my games such as Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and WoW on the fullest settings without a problem. Then a few months later it began restarting after anywhere between 30 mins to 1hour+ of playing. I called the makers of my computer, we tried to see if it was overheating but it wasnt, I also tested the videocards, it wasnt that either. Then, out of nowhere it fixed itself for a few months, then out of nowhere it happened again. I restored my computer to an earlier time and it worked for a few days and now it's restarting again.

Could this be a Vista problem? I had a friend who said he had the same problem with his new comp but he upgraded to windows 7 and it has yet to restart... I have no idea, any sort of help would be much appreciated...

Thanks.

Hi. So recently i started having this problem. So i would start playing a game or doing something resource intensive, and after a while my PC would just freeze, not respond to anything, and then restart. And i know this technically isnt a BSOD thead, but i have no idea where to put it, so i decided to put it here, as there was no really better section for it. It only seems to happen when i am talking with someone over skype though. Next time i restart my PC i will make sure to put it in the mode, where when it receives a BSOD it doesnt restart to try and catch if there is an actual BSOD appering. Thanks in advance

the last two days my machine has suffered a crash with similar symptoms. First, the display goes blank. I can see some disk activity. This continues for maybe 20-30 seconds and then the machine shuts down. Yesterday, I had to restart the machine twice b/c the first attempt also resulted in a shutdown during the boot process.I thought that perhaps it was an overheating issue, but I'm not convinced of that as today there was nothing obstructing the exhaust vents (though they were a bit dusty).I'm runing windows 7 pro, 64 bit. Have an NVidia card, but I don't know about the details. Where would I find them? Thanks in advance.

If it is a W510, graphics are probably 1GB NVIDIA® Quadro® FX880M.  It is hard to diagnose from a thousand miles away, but my first guess is overheating. I suggest installing TPFancontrol (free) and monitor temperatures.

This is something that I've been having trouble with for a couple months now, but recently I've noticed it happening more often. The problem is essentially me playing games or watching videos and having the sound, video and mouse completely freeze up. I then have to hard restart the computer, and sometimes my wireless connection will not work as well and I'll have to restart the computer again to make the WiFi work. I'm running Windows 7 SP1 on Bootcamp on a Macbrook Pro that I bought in 2009 I believe. Not sure if it is malware or something else that is causing the problem. Hopefully Tech Support can help me out here. If there's anything else you need from me before you can help me, please let me know. My Hijack Log, dds.txt and attach.txt are as follows:

Whenever I play fullscreen games such as League of Legends or Diablo. After about a couple of minutes, it will randomly crash. I've done a reformatting on the computer to no avail (the problem still persists). Not sure if it's a hardware issue and if I should get the graphics card replaced.

I've also updated all of my drivers so I know the problem isn't with not having updated drivers.

When it crashes, the screen has rainbow streaks, and the audio starts looping. I have to restart just to go back into my game and whatnot.

Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium

(Ingame for league, I turned off video sync and I have settings on low)

Suggestions on how to fix this problem? Should I downgrade my drivers?

Nvida Geforce GT 630
AMD A8-5600K APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics 3.60 Ghz
8.00 GB Ram

How can I debug this problem?

Also I can't access the boot menu to format from the CD/USB. It takes me to the "start windows normally start windows in safe mode etc" screen.

I've tried all the F keys including the escape key and none of them work, because they all take me to the same screen. The only way I can reformat my computer is by doing it through the actual windows itself. I can't even make my current partition active for some reason even though I'm administrator.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

title pretty much sums up my problem but'll recap what I believe led to the problem, last night I randomly decided that I would check to see if my computer needed any updates. So I went to Microsoft Updates and did a custom scan, when scan finished there were a two Nvidia updates one said bus emulator and other network controller, not being a tech swavy guy I said "sure download please". So windows update did its thing but as soon as it finished downloading and started installing my AVG anti-virus pop'd up requesting to move some files to "the vault", when that happened windows finished installing and asked my computer to restart, after it restarted i tried to go on AIM and Ventrilo (aka Vent), here's i knew something was wrong, I couldn't sign in to AIM all it said was "waiting for Network..." and Vent just simply said "unknown last ip address" I went to command prompt > ipconfig where it said connection-specific dns suffix it was blank, for ip address it still showed my ip same for subnet mask there was still some numbers but, for default gateway it was blank, thinking it must had something to do with the drivers window installed I did a system restore to two days ago, after it rebooted I thought I fixed it, I was able to sign on AIM as well as Vent even able to use google chrome and watch a friend stream on live on twitch tv, so calling it a night I shut down my PC and when to sleep, now to the title, woke up t... Hello!

My screen goes black when I play games, it works fine for a while then the screen goes black, but I've still got control of windows for 2-3 secs, I can change songs by my keyboard etc, but then I lose all control of it. It also sounds like it's working more when this problem occurs. I've tried updating the drivers, formating the hard-drive and re-installing vista and removing dust from the computer. I've also tried to cut the monitors power for like 20sec and then reboot the monitor, bit it still won't find any connection, it searches for a connection as soon as the problem occurs but can't seem to find any. The computer store which built my computer have had a look at it and they couldn't get the same problem to occur while they were running a benchmark. The windows log says nothing at all about the problem. The only way to get the picture back is to manually reboot the computer by holding the power button. I've never noticed this problem while browsing the web or things that don't use a lot of graphics. Also, I had a similar problem some time ago, about a year, which disappeared when they store installed a new power supply.

Help will be appreciated!

I bought new pc parts this week and also bought Windows 10 Home while I was at it, due to W7 not accepting USB 3.0. But shortly after, I started having bad audio problems when using my headset, which is connected to my motherboard's rear 3.5mm output.

The symptoms consist of:
- The audio cutting out suddenly after just a few minutes of usage, e.g. 30 seconds of youtube, combined with the microphone not picking up any audio.

- Sound panel not responding occassionally or becoming sluggish. Can pop up later when clicking on things like browser tabs.

- High Definition Audio Device disappearing from choosable outputs in the notification area.

- Realtek High Definition Device disappearing from the Device Manager.

- Random pop-ups saying that I've either unplugged an audio device or I've plugged in an audio device multiple times in a row.

- Sound panel showing activity from both random thing I'm playing, and the Test Sound button, but no sound actually playing in the headset.

- Usually the sound cuts out with a small crackle, but other times it's completely silent when it happens. When loading the desktop I can hear some crackling too.

- ARK: Survival Evolved crashing, giving me a memory write error, followed by a notification of a decive being plugged in instantly after.

I've tried:
- Installing the latest drivers through windows update, realtek's latest drivers, motherboard's latest drivers and various .cab updates being rejected because the drivers "are up to date&... Read more

This question has been asked by countless people, and the Internet is filled with a wild array of answers.

If you bought an HP system many years ago, and it came with Windows XP, and you have the re-installation disc, if your system dies or needs to be recommissioned because it's unreliable, can't you use the re-installation disc to install the OS onto the new system? I've heard some limitations are involved but I don't know fact from fiction on these:

1. You can reinstall only IF you upgrade the system with the same motherboard because the key for the install is tied to the serial number of the motherboard.

2. You can reinstall only if you move the hard drive of the old system to the new one (which for me would be impossible because the old drive is IDE and the new one is SATA).

3. You can reinstall only if the new computer is a model from the same vendor (e.g., if you have the reinstall disc for a Dell computer it will only work in another Dell computer).

4. If you call MS customer support and explain that your system's motherboard has died they will "reactivate" the license for you on the new system.

5. You can't do it in any scenario because your EULA will state that you agreed to install the OS on the one computer and agreed it would not be used on another system.

Anybody have any definitive answers on this issue?

Answer:T or F: Your OEM license for Windows XP dies when your system dies.
