Solved: laptop screen issue

Question: Solved: laptop screen issue

This is most likely in the wrong forum so feel free to move it to where it should go.

I have a 600m Dell Inspiron laptop. One of the hinges of the laptop screen seems to be broken so whenever i adjust the screen the monitor just falls and closes the laptop. Although it is incovenient the laptop works perfectly. i was wondering if a) this could later on affect the laptop and mess up my screen and b) if anyone knew whether Dell warranty would fix this for me or am I held responsibles (even though i have not dropped the computer to cause this to happen).

Thanks for any suggestions!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, So I have a user that just recently started to have an issue.  The laptop is fine (beyond the sound issues with the X230 which aren't solved (sound issue)), but if the user puts the laptop in the docking station with the laptop lid/screen closed/down, the external monitor only displays the desktop background but no login screen or desktop icons. This user has Windows 7 Pro. on it, I just installed the latest video driver from Lenovo's site and that didn't help.  I made sure the screens were set to clone and not extended displays. When the user flips up the laptop screen/lid, both screens are cloned and all is fine.  Supposedly this just started to happen a few days ago. But if the user has the laptop turned off, puts it in the docking station, closes the lid and turns the laptop on, the external monitor works just fine. I've changed clone to extended desktop just to see if that would help any but it didn't.  Set her back to cloned displays. Only other thing I can think of doing is to make sure the external monitor's resolution is set right but...don't understand what's going on.... Thoughts?

Answer:x230 (2320) laptop issue with external monitor when laptop lid/screen is up

Hi, cftech

My first recommendation would be to make sure that the BIOS and chipset drivers are the latest version. Since the external monitor works, just only certain circumstances, this is most likely a software issue of some sort. The BIOS can be found here and the chipset here.

Also, if possible, could you have the user try to connect to the external monitor without the docking station? I'm just curious if the docking station could have something to do with the issue,

Best of luck, and let me know how it goes
Adam

Have Dell Latitude D400 Laptop which is several years old. For many months, had minor problem where LCD screen would have partial garbled horizontal lines, but when I shifted the screen angle -- moved screen on hinges -- back and forth slightly, then screen would be fine. But recently, the bottom 70% of the screen has turned to olive green mush with a few other vertical lines, where as the top 30% of the screen is fine. When I connect external monitor to rear jack, I am able to see all the graphics there and the hardware and software otherwise performing. When run built-in diagnostics, get graphics error with no external monitor, but all tests just fine when ext monitor connected. Conclusion from on line chat with Dell Tech was LCD Screen problem and referred me to the toll free SALES phone number -- meaning just purchase another one.

How do I know if the problem is the LCD screen being shot, or possibly just needing to clean or repair the connection through the hinges from the CPU/graphics card to the screen itself? If the latter, who should I seek to do such a repair or can I get guidance to open the unit and try myself as I am technically comfortable doing so with instruction? And given the cost of new laptops today, if I need to go outside for repairs, where should I look and up to what cost do you think is worth it, vs just abandon and purchase a new one.

Answer:Laptop LCD screen or screen connection issue

Could be a bad connection or the LCD might be shot. I would take it apart and at least poke around if it is no longer under warranty. Dell has some pretty good service manuals on their site. I think yours is here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latd400/en/index.htm#online_documentation

If you don't find anything obvious wrong with it, you can most likely get a screen off FleaBay for a few bucks and try it out.

Or just get some huge hinges and mod a 50" plasma screen on it...

Good luck!

I have a lenovo T540 laptop. The problem is that my laptop screen will not completely work. What happens, beginning from startup, is that the laptop screen works completely normal, shows the usual lenovo loading screen, then once it reaches the point where is is supposed to show the desktop background(where you sign in.) It changes to a dim black. My external screen is black as well as though it was extending the screen. I can click, then sign in, and access all of my files after I change the setting to second screen only, but I would like to be able to use the laptop screen as well. If anybody could help that would be great.

Hello,

For the past few days sometimes when I open my laptop I get a grey screen with horizontal streaks (sometimes black with horizontal streaks) running across the screen. If I close the screen and re-open it eventually it will go back to normal. I've also had the screen freeze a few times for a few seconds while I'm using it.

I've hooked it up to my TV when it had the grey screen and it was working fine so I'm pretty sure it's the laptop screen. This doesn't happen all the time so if the solution is get a new screen I'll just live with it, but perhaps something simpler?

Answer:Laptop screen issue

My first guess would be the video card or driver but if you hook it to an external monitor and it is OK then it does point to the Laptop screen. Sometimes the ribbon cable from the Motherboard to the monitor can get loose or damaged. Not saying that is what it is tho.

Hi. I've had this laptop, a Dell Inspirion 1200, for a few weeks now. I usually either close the cover or put it into Hibernation when I'm done using it. I haven't jarred it, shocked it, or stepped on it.

Basically, I opened up the cover and hit power. While it was booting up, I looked away to do something, and when I looked back, the screen was covered in white vertical lines. I shut down the computer by holding down the power button, then rebooted. When it came up again, it was perfectly fine (no lines at all.)

Is this a fluke or something I should worry about in the future?

I've had a HP dv6 laptop for close to a year now and have had zero issues up until the last week. I've noticed when watching videos in fullscreen for even a short period of time the contrast for the screen goes right up up when the video is exited, basically if I watch something and then minimise it whatever is behind it is almost unreadable, such as the standard chrome bar up top looks almost one solid, bright colour, after 5 to 10 seconds its back to how it should look.
It's also a LED display
Anybody have a similar situation or know what the problem could be?

Thanks
Andy

Answer:HP laptop screen issue

Depending on what program you use for watching videos it may just be bugging up, but also it may be that the program is infected in some way. Have you tried a virus scan?

sir, some dead pixal see on my laptop screenso please tell me a simple solution of my problemthank you.

Answer:issue about my laptop screen

There is no way to fix it the issue is whether it is serious enough to require that HP replace the screen. There is a "pixel policy" that governs the terms of the warranty. You need to contact HP Warranty Support to see if you can get a new screen.

About 2 weeks ago, a pink line appeared on my laptop screen. It is a straight line running down the length of the screen on the left side. A couple of days ago another line appeared, this time yellow. I am fairly certain that this is a hardware issue (driver re-install and system rebuild have not helped). I contacted HP who told me my 15month old laptop is out of warranty and will cost 250 to repair.Do I have any other options?ThanksTony Webber

Answer:HP Laptop screen issue

Not really it is a hardware issue rather than software I suspect. You could try ebay to get yourself a new screen cheaper and install it yourself. Usually screens are about 50 - 150 depending on the one you need. However some home insurance may cover you for the costs but remember the rise in the premium before you do claim.

I own an HP Compaq nc6320....and recently my screen has been acting weird. it only turns on some of the time upon startup. Sometimes it seems like it has to cool down for it to work, I'll have to leave it off for a while before the screen will work. But also i noticed that the fan doesnt seem to be running as fast when the screen isnt working. Is this because my computer isnt fully booting? I'm thinking i may have fried my video card, as i play WoW sometimes. Could this be a virus? Any help would be appritiated.

Thanks

when i unplug my ac adapter from the wall before i unplug it from my lappy the screen stays bright, which isnt bad. but when i plug it in(wall first then lappy) it goes dim, like its in power saving mode. now how i usually fix this is i recreate the problem by unplugging it from the wall then turning the comp off, then unplug it from the comp while plugging it back into the wall, turn the comp on then plugging it back in. but it usually takes me a couple tries to get it back to normal again. ive turned off my power saving features and ive just had the computer screen replaced about 2 weeks ago. its always done this and i know it happens when i unplug it from the wall first; which if im in a hurry i dont think about it untill its to late.

its not that big of a problem but i would love to know how to fix it faster or maybe disable any features that could cause this.

my computer is an HP Pavilion zv6100 Notebook PC. its all stock except for the new screen.(the springs broke that hold it up and there was a dead pixel at the top)

I was using my laptop yesterday afternoon, when the screen began to fail. I turned the laptop off because it had froze, and when I tried to turn it back on, it just continuously reboots and shuts off, and the screen will not come on.

I have tried plugging in an external screen, but it does not receive a signal from the laptop, nor will the external keyboard I have to use (laptop keyboard is broken, not important).

Is there any way I can get the laptop to work again without taking it to a repair shop, or does a certain part need to be replaced?

Answer:Laptop won't start after screen issue

It could be one of several issues and from the sounds of it, would require a part replacement. Possibly the video card, but my best guess would be motherboard failure. I really wouldn't be able to tell for sure without further testing.

It is called "Flashlighting".  Common with LCD screens, that are lit by CFL lighting.

My laptop screen has developed a vertical grey band about 10cm wide which starts very light but as I leave the laptop switched on gets increasingly dark and when dark I can see effectively a shadow of a previous image on the screen, making it very difficult to read. I'm concerned that it may not simply be a screen replacement issue as there seems some comment that it may be a connector cable issue.  Any ideas?

Peering at the screen, you can tell it's displaying. Sadly, it's only bright enough to see for a brief moment.

I'm running into the D-Sub on the TV and have the CRT/LCD setting to display on both the laptop monitor and the TV. TV is a clear picture and the laptop I'm guessing from reading I've been doing is lacking the backlight.

History: No updates have been done in the timeframe that the monitor issues surfaced. No drivers changed, no programs installed (except vaguely possibly ExamDiff and one or two portable apps (http://portableapps.com/).

A week or two ago, I noticed the screen seemed to be shadowed in one area but the shadow seemed to go away if you brightened the screen all the way. Also, the screen seemed to be flickering, like lightbulbs sometimes do before blowing, that really quick, irritating flickering. This didn't usually last long, maybe 30 seconds at the most and it would settle down, ditto the shadowing.

Now, if I switch between CRT/LCD options or press then release the little screen switch near the hinge (the one that turns off the monitor if you close the lid), I tend to get a very quick proper display on the laptop monitor before it goes dark again with the displayed information impossible to read.

The issue is the same through a hibernate and resume, brief flashes of a clear screen and then only the vague outline can be seen.

Does anyone have any experience of an Advent Laptop working fine, but
when you shut Windows Vista down, shortly after the screen goes blank,
the screen switches back on to a bright white?

The laptop is not on, but the screen is.... obviously this drains the battery.

Apparently some wine was spilt towards the QWERTY side of the keyboard

Any ideas?

New laptop, booted for 1 and a half hours, now has a green line down the screen.

The retailer wants a screen shot by email before they will even issue an RMA No and agree to accept the laptop. I took a screenie with HypersnapDX but the green line doesn't show up.

They suggested a cell phone with bluetooth / usb - but the laptop doesn't have bluetooth and the cell doesn't come with a compatible cable.

Do I have any options here - software wise to enable me to grab a pic of the green line ?

I seem to have broken my laptop. I was trying to hook it up to a tv with an HDMI cable. Following the advice on a website I went to "Adjust screen resolution" to try and find the tv as another device and enable that. However there was no other device, so I decided to play around a bit to see if I could get something to , this was my mistake. On one of the drop down menus under the resolution menu I managed to select something which created a second device in the box showing how many displays you have. I was pretty sure it wasn't the tv but thought I'd keep playing around and on one of the other drop down menus I selected something like "expand across both displays"...said soemthing like that, and then that's when the laptop went blank, still a backlight coming from it but nothing but black on screen. I restarted the laptop, the screen showed up the windows starting stuff then the desktop flickered on for barely a second then it went back to blank screen. I can only guess I've created an imaginary device with obviously no display and this is what it is showing now when it's blank.
Hope this makes sense to someone else, not sure it does to me, I really shouldn't mess about with technology.
With some advice from someone else I tried toggling with the fn f buttons, f5 was the only thing that did anything but it just toggles from a light black to a dark black, as it would be if it were turned off. I have tried starting it in safe mode but it doesn't give me the... Read more

This is the second time I've bought a new laptop in 2 weeks, because my old Dell's hard drive crashed.  The first replacement HP wouldn't connect to Wifi and Geek Squad couldn't help from the store, so just traded out for this new one, and that problem is solved.  I'm not sure if my Win 10 is 32 bit or 64 bit, BTW, and don't know if it matters for this issue.  I was on my laptop last night and the keyboard kept acting wonky--slow response and I'd have to hit a key a few times to get the letter/number to type at times.  Also, even though I hit the numlock key, it wouldn't stay locked.  Please tell me this is a quick driver reset.  I really don't want to go back to Best Buy again.

Hello, so I have this problem with my laptop screen, My laptop is a Dell XPS 15 and not even a month old. While I was reading an article online, I thought I heard a ding sound like what it makes when it asks me for administrative permission for a program to open or do certain functions and then the right upper corner and part of the right side of my screen dimmed. As if there is a shadow over it. When my laptop asks for administrative permission it generally does dim everything but the dialogue box that opens up but never have I ever seen it dim only a section of the screen and a window never opened asking me for permission for anything.

I tried resetting my computer and it changed nothing, I also tried changing my screen's brightness and the dimmed section does get brighter with the rest of my screen but it still stays a few shades darker than the rest of the screen. I do have a warranty that would cover any repairs and fixing that needs to be done but I am hoping it is something that can be easily fixed by myself because sending it in to be looked at, repaired and then returned could take a while and I obviously don't want to waste the time if somebody knows an easy fix to this. Try booting into Safe Mode. Since that uses a generic display driver and runs minimal software I think if you get the same dimmed part of the screen you can be pretty confident that you want to get warranty service.

Just as the title states, my new bought laptop is extremely weird. I am currently having 2 issues, and yes I've searched already(even though its hard to search when this is so confusing)
1. Whenever sound is played on the laptop, WITH and WITHOUT HEADPHONES/MIC plugged in, the left side laptop speaker lets out a static sound for a while, and if a sound on the laptop ends, it ends after like 3-5 seconds.
2. The buggiest issue I am having, is my computer refusing to be the "actual" screen. What I mean by this is that if I screen capture my desktop, the lower maybe 1/6th of the bottom and the right side is cut off, the resolution being weird.
I.E If i stream, and capture a window, and my mouse is in the middle ON MY SCREEN, the stream will show my mouse cursor to the right and a bit below of where it should be in the middle.

Please help me, as I've already tried my laptop brand's customer service GIGABYTE, and Reddit, but to no avail, and GIGABYTE takes forever for them to respond to tickets, and all they ask for is if i installed anything, etc when I got the laptop, when the issue was from the beginning.

What I have tried:
Disable/Enabling NVIDIA/INTEL HD graphics cards
System Reformat
Updating drivers
Change resolution

Thank you for your time, and I pray that someone has a solution for me... this is extremely annoying

Hi there

If you have tried a system format the chances are almost 100% hardware related.
You will have to take it back to the seller for inspection.

The will either repair the laptop or credit you.

Hey all, I'm having a dilemma.

TLDR: my new Acer Aspire E 15 laptop has a messed up screen, should I get a refund and either finance a MacBook or find a used MacBook, or try to repair the Acer?

In mid march I bought a new laptop - an Acer Aspire E 15 from Amazon. A couple weeks ago I opened it and there was a big black spot on the screen with white lines coming from it. The laptop hadn't been dropped or even moved, I don't know what caused it. But reviews on amazon said other people had the same problem a month or two after buying the laptop.

I contacted amazon and they said I can return it for a refund. I contacted the seller and they said I could send it to them for repair. However, I use my laptop for work and couldn't go that long without it for them to fix it. When I contacted Acer about the warranty, they said that since the black spot is "finger shaped" (??) it's not covered under warranty. But it is so large that it's a real problem when trying to work, or even just generally use it.

So now I have to decide whether to get it repaired or get a refund and buy a new laptop. I'm leaning toward the latter. I really want a MacBook and was approved for financing from Apple.
However, my friend made the point that computers are kind of like cars in that they depreciate in value after you buy them. So is it really worth getting a new MacBook and financing it? Or should I look into getting a used one for cheaper? If I get a us... Read more

I bought this laptop back in September-ish of 2014. It runs perfectly fine still and always has but the image on my screen has been a problem since probably December of 2014. I know that seems ridiculous for me to just now be bringing it up but I honestly dont use it that often and only for pleasure so I always put it off and forgot about it.

The screen basically flickers blue in certain spots. Corners of windows, icons, links, etc. Its almost as if it was highlighted... I am not sure what it is. Sometimes it randomly goes away but then comes back within a few days.

If i do a screen grab of the blue flickering it doesnt appear in the jpg. So i took a picture with my cell phone. I uploaded that pic as well as my system specs to this thread.

Anyone please help lol....Bestbuy within 10 minutes told me it would cost me $200 for a new screen without even doing anything besides comestically looking at the screen and laptop. HP has been beyond awful in their "support"

Hi allI?ve been experiencing problems with my Sony Vaio Laptop off and on for about 3 months (the laptop is 18 months old).Basically the screen goes blank for no reason when I?m on the internet, listening to music, working. The backlight is still on (I can adjust the brightness of the screen using shortcuts) and the laptop still runs (music still plays etc) but I can?t see the screen.I have found by hitting the space bar repeatedly can sometimes make the screen come back to life, but not always but I don?t know why this is happening.I contacted Sony and they said ?From what you describe it would appear that there could be an issue with a connection with the display. It may be necessary to arrange the collection for repair of the VAIO... To confirm if this is a hardware fault with the VAIO we would recommend that a full system recovery is carried out on the VAIO.? which basically means it goes back to factory settings, which is something I want to avoid as I haven?t backed up any songs, work, photos (I?m buying an external hard drive this week).Has anyone else come across this issue / has any insight how to overcome it?? I?d be grateful for any advice. I?m not very technical so go slow with me!Thanks in advance.

Answer:SONY Vaio Laptop Blank Screen Issue

from what Sony are saying it sounds like this may be a known build fault or loose wire problem. If this is the case returning the laptop to them would seem to be your only option. It always pays to back-up your work regularly, it's a good habit to get in to. You never know what might be waiting around the corner!?

Hello there, its the Celestial Crown Prince of Canada here.I've been a loyal user of HP Consumer-Level Laptops for 2 years. It seems that there is a screen display issue with my Laptop. For myself, this is the first time an issue of this kind has occurred. For some reason, during my current(well, now its my last) session, my screen went totally blank on me and turned black, as if the laptop was in an off sort of power state, however, the laptop power was still on and before the issue suddenly decided to happen in front of my very eyes, I had been using the laptop, and was even working on doing some coding...some of you may know me as the creator of the Celestial Crown System.ini Configuration File.Apparently, this is a known HP Laptop Issue, and I'm not sure if HP is actively focusing on fixing the issue so that it does not become an inconvenience to other HP Laptop users or buyers. Is there any known solution as to how to fix this sort of issue? This is very critical, and I was in the midst of trying to save the rest of my code in notepad to my desktop, but I would surmise that asides from the 2 files I was able to save, the rest would be gone unless I would be able to resume my last session which I highly doubt at this point. If anyone could please let me know as soon as possible, I would immensely appreciate it. ~CCPOC Benson Lam

The screen is not all black, instead, pixels are washed out, leaving a halo in a few spots on the laptop screen, when the computer was initially started from the box. The first one was shipped and I assumed it may have been handled poorly and now the similiar with the second one. I will follow up with a call to HP, I wanted to know if the community has any screen quality issues?

I have a Dell Inspiron 17RSE laptop (the SE = special edition of the 17R (7720)). Lightning stroke the router which was connected to my laptop through an Ethernet cable. The laptop was off during the strike, but afterwards the router was fried and the laptop screen did not power on (or so I thought) when the laptop was powered on. I then connected an external monitor to the VGA out, and this works. The graphics card also seems to be picked up correctly inside speccy/HWMonitor/Everest and CUDA acceleration works inside Adobe Premiere Pro, so I guess I can rule out a fried GPU. The monitor Part Number is N173HGE L-11 rev.2 (ChiMei) --- and in Everest it says Manufacturer: HDKPV173HGE --- http://www.laptopscreen.com/English/screen-part-number/N173HGE-L11/. As I said initially I thought the screen was completely blank, but upon shining a light on the screen I can see an image on the screen, just very faint (btw the display brightness is set to max). I then looked for the LCD power inverter, but realised the screen is a LED screen so there is no inverter. So I'm thinking it could be a burned out fuse near the LCD connector cable on the motherboard itself, or the LED backlight is burned out.
What do you think?
Other changes in my laptop state since the lightning strike:

1) the laptop seems to overheat when running Adobe Premiere Pro -- which is set to use GPU acceleration. Using HWMonitor it seems to be the CPU, not the GPU, that overheats and all 8 threads of the CPU... Read more

Answer:Laptop LED screen only very faintly lit. LED backlight problem or other issue?

A fuse would make sense. Seems like you know what you're doing, so take the thing apart locate said fuse and put a multimeter across it, see the resistance.

Had this Sager np2740 laptop and it has had lot of issues. When i first got it, it was great. Battery was good and everything. After having the laptop for a bit, my battery went bad. Had that Red X mark on it. I bought a new battery replacement which was expensive. Had to go to repair shop to install battery on laptop because you had to open laptop in order to put battery in.

After that, battery went bad and had that Red X mark ever since. Then recently my laptop flickers a lot the screen. Like rainbow color. Now theres a black line there. But if i move screen up or down, it goes green or yellow etc. The thing though is i connect my laptop to an external monitor so i dont have this issue with my main screen. Thus it would be impossible to use my laptop by itself because of the blurry lines.

Since I'm out of warranty... this is with xoticpc, what can i do about this case? Go to a repair shop and see what they can do about it? The thing is if i need a replacement part, wouldn't i need to order from sager/xoticpc for this issue? I have had nothing but issues with this laptop once the battery first ran out.

Answer:Laptop Flickering Screen And Huge Issue with Clicking

I also had another issue related to this. Earlier when i was trying to click on things on my laptop screen... it kept asking me if i want to delete this program from computer. Example i would left click on a program on my desktop or click on my pictures or documents.
I click no and then i had this message show up over and over again where I cannot X it out. Had to been like that message popping up over and over again. I assume this is related to the screen flickering? Example i would use my mouse and click on programs on my desktop or my documents etc left clicking it like normal. It would then have the popup are you sure you want to delete file and send to recycle bin. Basically i click no but that same message keep popping up over and over again. When i got control alt delete, you see it has like 50 processes that say program isn't responding or something like that. Only way to get rid of this is to restart my laptop or shutdown then start it up again.
And when i do restart laptop or close it and start up, it would have this message with black screen and have option to click Enter where it says Window 7. Like asking which program to start up. Does anyone know what this is?

Hello, I have a T520 with a docking station.  There is an external monitor connected to the VGA port in the docking station and I have the laptop set to only use the external monitor.  However, when I close the screen of the laptop and put the laptop to sleep, and then when I open the laptop again, the laptop monitor turns on and mirrors on the external.  So basically, I need to set it to only use the external every time the laptop starts up.   Is there any fix to keep the laptop screen off while it is docked? Thanks.

Answer:T520 External Monitor/Laptop Screen issue

I don't have a dock to test. But I would look at the setting for Action when closing the lid/cover. Hibernate, go to sleep would be the normal actioins. You'd want nothing to happen. Look into the choice and I believe that will resolve it. There may be a group for when DOCKED as notebooks had years ago. The settings would apply only to when Dockend and not undocked.

Hi,
The LCD screen on my laptop began to develop- a series of horizontal lines and over the course of two weeks it went from 3 or 4 lines to a total blurred white out making the screen completely unviewable.
I bought a replacement screen assembly and installed it and it appeared to work just fine. However once the remaining battery charge depleted, the laptop would not turn on and did not seem to charge. I tried the unplug, battery reset, hold power button combo but could not get the computer to power up.
I reinstalled the non-functioning screen and now the computer will power up - but I cannot see anything on the screen.
I wondered if it was something to do with the comp not recognising that the replacement screen was open. Has anybody got any advice or similar experience of this.
I'm cracking up a bit here as I thought it was solved but now it's not

Answer:Samsun Laptop screen replacement power issue

Assuming you tried powering up with the battery removed and that didnt work, did you remove the battery when you replaced the screen?
It seems likely that you have damaged the power circuitry on the motherboard.
Your theory about the laptop not recognising that the screen is open is reasonable but the wrong way around as it must have noticed that the screen was open as it continued to run until the battery went flat. Its usually the proximity of the screen to the laptop body that trips a reed relay that turns the laptop off.
Its possible that the reason why it powers up with the old dead screen is because being dead its not consuming any power but when you connect the new screen it refuses to power up because the power drain is too much for the damaged power circuitry.
Of course all of the above is supposition and the problem may be due to something entirely different.

I picked up a Dell Inspiron 5000e laptop second-hand (Windows ME installed) and I'm trying to get it to work. There are two issues: screen and touchpad. I'm just focusing on the screen for now since I can plug in an external mouse. Here are the symptoms (I think they may all be related):

When I turn the laptop on, the LCD screen will not light up. If I press Fn + F8 to toggle CRT/LCD, the LCD screen will flicker briefly. If I hold a flashlight to the screen, I can still see a very dim image but the backlight refuses to stay on. However, if I plug in an external VGA monitor, then press Fn+F8 several times, the LCD screen will stay on. I can even unplug the ext. monitor and the LCD screen backlight will continue to stay on. I just need to plug in the ext. monitor at some point after power-up to get the backlight to stay on. Or, if I plug in the ext. monitor before power-up, the LCD screen backlight will come on and stay on from the start.
I have to try 3 times before I am successful to boot into Windows ME. The first time, I get Windows ME loading image for about 15 seconds then the screen goes dark (not off -- just black), then the hard drive stops accessing and nothing happens. I restart either with Ctrl+Alt+Del or by holding down power button, then I am given the option to boot into safe mode. I select "Normal" boot (not Safe Mode). The same thing happens a second time. The third time, I successfully boot into Windows. (Other times I booted into Safe Mod... Read more

I've owned my HP laptop for almost three years now, and up to this point it has worked great throughout it's use. Recently, it seems like the hinges to open and close my screen have been putting some stress on the screen frame. Every time I open my laptop up, I have to take about 5 minutes to open it carefully so the frame doesn't come loose on the bottom left corner. Closing it is an issue too, as I usually have to close my fingers on it to keep the frame from going loose, resulting in it coming loose despite my hardest efforts, in which case I have no choice but to close it and snap everything back into it's rightful place. I took my laptop over to Best Buy for their input, and the only thing they suggested was superguling the frame to the screen. I took their advice and tried it, letting it sit for 2 days open while it set. (You can never be too careful!) The superglue did nothing and my frame is still loose, and I now have an ugly line of superglue on the bottom of my screen that sets off my OCD every time I need to get work done. If anyone has any idea on how to go about fixing this situation, I'd appreciate it.Thanks!

I just bought an HP Pavillion dv6-7014nr and I love it! Except for one thing. I upgraded to the 1920x1080 screen to get the HD quality and the matte display. Everything on this screen is so tiny, its uncomfortable to read. I have increased the text size in windows to 130% dpi and I have downloaded and extension in Firefox to keep the zoom level I like. My problem is that with this increased DPI setting, the text in programs, such as iTunes gets cut off or overlaps. I was just wondering if there was a solution to this problem, or is it just something I have to live with?
Thanks very much!

Dan

Answer:[SOLVED] 1920x1080 screen resolution on a 15.6" Laptop Screen

1920x1080 doesn't suit everyone on a 15.6" screen as it's really more suited to large-screen external monitors (20" or more). It's big plus of course is that it gives you much more screen space to use for multi-tasking or using apps which have many palettes (like Photoshop). Personally I think 1920x1080 is way too high for the average laptop screen size unless you've got perfect eyesight.

If you don't need all that space, you may find that setting a lower resolution (and changing DPI & zoom levels back to their defaults) is more in line with what your eyesight can deal with. It probably won't look as pin-sharp as the native 1920x1080 resolution though, but at least you shouldn't get some app Windows extending beyond the screen edges.

Sorry, I can't help fix your issue, but I wanted to let you know that you are not alone!  We have 7 Elitebook 840 G3's wth Windows 10 on the 2013 UltraSlim Dock as well, and they are all doing the same thing.  Both external displays will go black for a few seconds periodically throughout the day.   We are using HP EliteDisplay E242 displays for all except one user, who has ASUS displays, and they all have the same issue, so the display itself does not appear to be the issue. The VGA port seems to work fine, so this points to the Display Ports/driver being the issue.  I have tried all available driver updates, but nothing has resolved the issue. We are looking for a solution to this issue as well.

I've ran some programs in compatibility mode and it seems to have fixed most of my blue screen issues, but I still get the blue screen of death maybe once every two days; I'm new here so I'm not really sure where to begin. Also as I I have another account on my laptop named John, and it keeps coming back after I delete it. This isn't really a big problem I guess, but it's odd. Ok, basically here is my problem.

My screen brightness won't go above 70 on the brightness bar slider.

The reason I know my screen can be brighter is because this JUST started happening recently. (well like three months, but I haven't had time to deal with it until now)

And anyway- heres 'symptoms'

The Windows Mobility doesn't allow the slider to go more than 70

Doing FN + F7 for screen brightness to increase using Toshiba hotkeys thing it doesn't go brighter. (it works but not more than 70)

Right as I am restarting right as it boots up it is much brighter then after like a minute it goes to the 70 brightness mark.

It hasn't always done this.

Is this purely hardware issue with Toshiba? Is this like preventing the screen from being 'too' bright?

How can I get it to 100? On restart right before it dims the screen is much much nicer / brighter... It would be nice to have it brighter all the time..

I could do a system re-install... but I'm right in the middle of my school year and I don't really have time at this time...

Thanks for ideas and help.

Hello Folks,

Trying to fix my friends laptop but running into a weird issue.

Using Windows Vista Home Premium
Graphics Card is Standard Intel 945

When booting windows normally I get a solid blue screen (not BSOD) after the login screen. Boots into safemode normally.

Clean for viruses/malware

Tried the following:

1) Plugged in an external monitor (VGA Port) and it brought up a display window on pc showing it was currently in multiple monitor mode (still blue screen in backround). Blue Screen on monitor as well. Switched to Single Display and now just blue screen on laptop display. Connected to TV with S-Video. Blue screen on TV as well.

2) Changed Resolution as well as 16 bit/32 bit color. No Effect.

3) Uninstalled/Reinstalled Graphics Driver. No Effect.

4) Tried creating guest account and logging in normally. Won't get past login screen. Just continuously loading.

Any suggestions?
Thank You in Advance for any ideas.

Hi all. Is there any brilliance in the house? I hope so.

The inverter on my Acer Aspire 5103WLMi died after 13 months.

No probs. I bought a new one, put the machine together again and started it up. Perfect... well almost.

What is happening now is that I cannot get maximum brilliance from the screen. All the Windows option settings are set to the max and the are no other user settings available I can make to chance this.

Ok you'll be thinking there is an issue with the inverter but I'm far from sure that it is. The picture is perfect apart from this issue.

Booting up Vista will have the screen bright and brilliant (max brill). Windows will continue to load and then as the machine continues to load the registry and gets to the bit where the screen brilliance is set the screen will dip and settle to about 75-80% of it's capable brilliance. I feel sure this is a registry issue because of the boot up procedure which is clockwork and 100% predictable.

Where can I inspect the reg to find these settings? They must be there.

Other suggestions?

Many thanks.
Dave

Are there really no takers on this?? How dissapointing.

For those that don't know what an inverter is. inverters create a hi voltage charge and light the screen bulb(s) on your laptop or monitor. When it don't work you will see a perfect but dark n unlit image on your screen.

Hi,

Ive had the Acer 3003 wlmi for 4 years now (running XP) - ive always had issues with a flickering screen which is the first issue. Second one started about 2 years ago - the laptop began overheating. Sometimes it gets so extreme that Im unable to touch the mousepad or have the machine on my lap. If any intensive application is run (ie, malware scans, dvd, youtube stream etc), the machine overheats powers off.

Last week, this happened and so I switched on the machine as per usual again - I was taken to screen where it recommends safe mode (3 different options), a normal mode, or a last known settings mode - if I click on any of these options, the machine powers off, then loads up again - its just a cycle now and I can't get past it.

Ive been able to access the BIOS screen, and have also taken out the cooling fan to clean.

I have mechanical failure warranty and they are scheduled to pick the machine up for evaluation in the next day or so - they have warned me that if it turns out to be a software issue or virus, then I will be liable for charges. Obviously I dont want it to come to that - what is the likelihood of this being the case? I dont have the system restore disc anymore so am unable to run that.

Or is it a hardware failure taking all things into consideration?

Suggestions/advice are greatly appreciated!

Thanks

I have a friends Asus x54h laptop that is not booting, and it is droving me crazy.

What is happening:
When the power button is pressed the fan turns on and some indicator lights turn on including the hard drive indicator light. Then the disc drive makes a noise and the hard drive indicator light turns off. Here is a picture of the indicator lights:

Nothing ever shows up on the screen.
Sometimes after running 1-5 minutes the laptop will just completely turn off.

What I have tried:
-Booting with just the power cord connected.

-Booting with just the battery connected.

-Taking out the battery and unplugging the power cord and holding the power button for 40 seconds, then plug in and try to boot again.

-Attaching a screen and pushing the keyboard buttons to add an additional screen. Nothing showed up on it.

-Taking it's hard drive and putting it in a good laptop. It booted into Windows and ran without issues.

-Replacing the current stick of ram with a new one from crucial.com. This laptop only has one RAM slot and I don't have any compatible RAM so I had to just buy one. I put it in, and nothing happened differently. Also, if I remove the RAM completely nothing happens differently. This made me think that there might be an issue with the RAM slot. I looked at it, and there seems to be something a little weird about one of the connectors. Here is a picture:

I am not sure, but I thought that this might be causing the RAM to not be detected. I used a ... Read more

I have a Gateway 3550gz laptop that won't power on even with the power cord.

If I have the battery removed & the unit is plugged in, there's no life at all. If the battery is in place & the power cord is unplugged, the power light blinks for a bit. If the power cord is plugged & the battery is in, the power light blinks as before. There are no fan or HD noises to speak of. The power adapter is putting out the correct voltage.

I found instructions to disassemble the laptop, but then what? Any help is appreciated!

Answer:Solved: laptop power issue

Well, it's an internal issue. My advice is find a competent shop and take it for repairs. Obviously, if it's still under warranty, send it back to Gateway.

Hey all,

I'm currently trying to provide some tech support to my girlfriend, who is experiencing some weird issues with her laptop.

I've used two hard drives trying to figure this all out - the first, which I'll call HDD1, is the hard drive from the laptop, containing all the gf's files and OS, etc. The second (HDD2) is a hard drive from an old laptop of mine - still with everything on it from when the laptop died.

So, the main issue is that when she starts her computer, it won't boot. The screen claims there isn't any hard drive attached to boot from. My first assumption was that HDD1 had failed in some way, so my first reaction was to pop it in an external USB enclosure to see if I could recover anything. To my surprise, HDD1 worked just fine when attached to my PC via USB, so we grabbed important files and backed them up. Since HDD1 worked, I assumed there was a problem with the laptop's machinery for reading HDDs. To test this, I hooked up the older HDD2, and was again rather surprised when the laptop began to boot up with no issues.

Assuming that whatever was wrong had magically corrected itself, I hooked HDD1 back up to the laptop, and even got so far as a logon screen. At this point, the laptop was functioning exactly as it had prior to the problems. However, when we attempted to login to Windows, the correct password for my gf's user account failed to work. I'm assuming this is because I took ownership of her user dire... Read more

Hello,

I?m writing in to ask someone who's really computer savvy for two distinct problems with a 6 month old Lenovo Y580 Ideapad Laptop of mine. It runs Windows 8, 64-bit.

Basically, I haven?t seen either of these two issues, sound-freezing/visual, crop up with anybody else, including Lenovo?s own website, so I?ll be over the moon if anyone can shed some light.

I'll explain the first issue in detail.

Here goes:

From early on, this laptop, has had ridiculous freezing issues. There?s no virus on it or anything like that on it. I've estimated that the laptop has freezes an average of at least twice a day(!), and it's had maybe 10 BSODs.

I?ve updated all Drivers and done a clean wipe and reinstallation of Windows 8--I have no choice, it?s built in with the laptop system--but to no avail; it still freezes like anything. There is no pattern to the freezing. The laptop could just freeze if opening up a document, or worse, if saving one. (However, I did notice it to be slightly worse when I was running multiple videos on Youtube).

Finally, I sort of isolated a problem: If starting the Computer up WITHOUT Audio (RUN/MSCONFIG/Services/disable Windows Audio at startup), there are basically NO hangs/freezes whatsoever. You can run it for hours and hours. Apparently, the same thing happens if run in Safe Mode: there appear to be no freeze issues.

This got me thinking "It must be a Drivers issue," so I checked the Drivers again. However, both the Realtek Driv... Read more

Hey all,

I have a Dell Latitude D505, it's been working fine all day until now. My buddy and I just got a battery warning while playing online poker so we plugged the computer in but it didnt seem like anything happened - the red light on the laptop remained and the battery icon in the bottom didn't change to a plug for the AC adapter but kept the batter icon.

At present the laptop is plugged in, I'm using it to type this, but the red light is still on. My power meter says I'm at 0% and I get the startup warnings on power-up and launching Windows that the battery is low, but everthing appears to be working fine.

Any ideas on diagnosing this? Is the battery just shot or could it be something else? I have tried two separate power cords which have both worked in the recent past with the same result.

Any ideas, comments, or suggestions are appreciated.

Hello there, I am finally going out of my mind with this laptop.

I am trying to fix this for my brother who is disabled and unable to do much but browse on youtube, but... we can't get on youtube.

It's not just youtube... there is something seriously wrong with it and i can't think of what to do.

The main issue was a BT modem lock flashing constantly and bringing up various padlocks in the start icon bar... after much fiddling, tweaking and following some advice, I finally managed to disable it through services.msc and msconfig.

Ok next up... get the internet back... ok so it won't load. Finally manage to get it to load but I can't do anything, I can't search on google even though the site is there, nothing. Time to re-install windows at this point.

Since I no longer have the original cd but am lucky enough to have the original key, I download a copy of windows XP professional and try to install it. I had service pack 3 installed so of course it wouldn't run from windows itself. I restart, press F12, boot from CD... windows setup starts opening everything and what do we know... a BSOD.

Ok, so let's try removing the service packs... here goes. I uninstall service pack 3, nicely done... restart all done. Next do the same with service pack 2... won't work? The file location no longer exists... so there goes that idea.

Safe mode time... so here I go, reboot, F8 safemode with networking... then it hangs at AVGDIDSEH.sys and blue screens. Great, now wh... Read more

Hi- I have a Compaq Presario C700 laptop that had Vista loaded onto it. The computer was running really slow and we were not happy with Vista so we ended up erasing the hard-drive and tried to load XP onto it. The HD is a Samsung, 160G, SATA drive (HM160HI).

My friend reformatted the drive using a USB plug in model (from Tiger Direct) and I confirmed it came up in Computer management and was formatted as NTFS. We then put the drive in the laptop and used a XP Pro disk to boot the laptop. The recovery program loaded fine, but when we selected load the OS to the hard-drive we got an error message stating the hard-drive was not present. We know the HD is working- it works fine with the external USB module. We reseated it in the laptop but can't get past that error message. Any suggestions to isolate the problem? Thanks.

Hi guys, my oldman's laptop has an issue with the wireless signal. His laptop can connect to the internet through ethernet fine, but when he tries to do it the other way it won't connect. It recognizes the network and connects to it, signal strength says excellent but the speed is always at 54.6mps. I'm assuming that's suppose to be at 100 unless I'm mistaken. Here's what I've already tried to do.

-typed cmd and tried pinging servers and sites no luck.
-tried resetting the router, and checked the settings, no luck.
-tried repairing the network and renewing IP and such, no luck.
-tested to see if the router was working, it works on other computers, and the xbox 360 fine.
-tried restarting computer, system restore, and disabling and re-enabling the wireless network.

I'm stumped at this point what else to try, I'm thinking his card isn't getting a strong enough signal no more and it fried or is on the verge of frying. That or he has a very bad virus. Any other input?

Today my Windows 7 Home Premium Asus laptop has begun acting up weirdly. Here's a list of the things that are happening.
-Slow boot and restart/shut down times. More than 5 minutes in length.
-When I logged in my usual admin account, I was logged in as a guest and most of my files are gone. Speed wasn't too different from the usual.
-Tried going to safe mode. Problems persisted.
-CPU usage is at like 0-5% at most times. That and the fact that it's as quick as usual when it finally does turn on makes me suspect that there isn't a virus.

I have a new Sony Laptop. Tonight I tried download Adobe 9. The install hung up so I tried to cancel it. It finally let me cancel it, but afterwards nothing else would respond. Internet exporer would not open nor anything else. I tried to shutdown the computer but it would not shutdown. I finally powered it off. When it came back on it said resuming windows and I had a window that said explorer with a blue circle sitting it it like it was trying to open. When I clicked it said it was not responding. I could not open task bar to stop this so I again powered off the computer. This time I have a blue screen with that circle. Any advice on what I should try next.

Perform a Vista Windows Restore - choose a restore point prior to the failed Adobe install.

Boot into SAFEMODE - tap the F8 key repeatedly during boot-up. Use the down arrow key to select SM. Log into Windows as usual - screen will appear distorted - that's OK.

START | type rstrui.exe - hit enter. Few seconds the system restore screen will appear. Choose a restore point.

The system will restore and re-boot.

We have the same problem as Wintercs. We plug the adapter into the dc jack on our HP Pavilion ZE2000 - sometimes it recognizes the charger, and then without notice it will stop charging and go onto battery. Unlike Wintercs, we have changed adapters 4 times (2 at her college and 2 at home). So we know it is not the adapter. As I was writing this post, the charging light on the laptop turned off .... stopped recognizing the charger.

A little history might help - my daughter, against my wishes, has always kept her laptop turned on even when she is out of the house for long periods. The adapter is always plugged in as well. The laptop was often resting on her comforter on her bed and would get rather warm.

The unit is 3 years old and has never been serviced. I have never cleaned out any dust or checked the status of any fan (is there a fan ?).

Did a little research and found a part called a motherboard DC jack #38. It is cheap enough but needs to be soldered onto the motherboard. Before going through this process and expense of getting someone to do it for me, am I on the right track ? Or have we done damage to the motherboard already ?

Thanks

Answer:Solved: Laptop charging issue

Well the laptop seems to work just fine, internet, network, apps all working. Just the charger problem at this point. Any suggestions on how to determine the cause since it is not the adapters ? Can a professional techie determine the cause ? Or would they be doing a process of elimination - lets replace this ; and then lets replace that ; etc.

Hi, I am using a lenovo t61 laptop and this evening the fan stopped dead. I opend the laptop up so I could see the fan and then powered it on and the fan spun once and then did not spin at all so I presumed some kind of motherboard issue. suddenly after applying a temporary measure "blast the laptop with fans and use a usb cooling pad the internal fan has started to work again.

I unplugged the connector of the fan when I was inside and then reconnected incase of any lose ends but I didn't perform any cleaning procedures but just wanted to ask for anyone advice on how to ensure that the fan stays active healthy etc or is this a sign that the fan may be dying? Many thanks

Answer:Solved: Urgent help, Laptop fan on and off issue

I would carry on using the laptop as normal but make a point of listening for the fan to switch on and off.

You could test it by running SpeedFan to check the temperatures and Prime95 to make the Cpu run at 100%

See here for using SpeedFan to make temperature charts (ignore the fan speed control section) - http://www.techerator.com/2010/01/using-speedfan-to-check-your-computers-hardware-status/
Just click on OK at the 'Hint' window that comes up when SpeedFan starts, click the Charts tab and put a tick in every box to start with.
Now get Prime95 by clicking this download link :- http://mersenneforum.org/gimps/p95v279.win32.zip unzip the files into a folder and run Prime95.exe, select 'In-place large FFTs...' option (click Options > Torture Test... if you don't see this option when you run Prime95) then click OK to start the test.

In SpeedFan (if the SpeedFan window has gone right-click it's tray Icon by the clock then click Restore) the temperature that rises the fastest and then slowly settles down is the one to watch (there may be a temp for each core in a Cpu). You can now untick the other temps to get a clearer chart.

The fan should come on shortly after Prime95 starts and stay on until you stop the test by right-clicking the Prime95 Icon by the clock > Exit. The temp should drop and level off and the fan should slow down and finally stop.

I got it at Costco's online store, where they let me configure an HP laptop for myself. Intel Duo core processors, 3GB of ram, Nvidia 512mb video card, 32 bit Vista Home Premium. (Gotta run that high end game coming out next week.)
Should I be more concerned about heat with that video card? I was probably gonna get a cooler pad for the laptop, not one of those that uses a usb port, just lifts it a little to improve air circulation under the laptop.
Thanks, any input is always appreciated.

Answer:Solved: Is over heating an issue on this laptop?

One of the safest answers is, "It depends."

If you live in Antarctica then you should get something to warm your laptop up a little, but you'll be ok. If you live in Death Valley, California you might take some extra measures.

But for "normal" usage, if you at all worry about heat, then it wouldn't hurt to get some lifters. Obviously keep it off of carpeting and on a flat, solid surface. Use it in a cooler environment.

My rule of thumb (though nothing is guaranteed) would be that if a manufacturer makes it, it probably has been tested to comply with FCC regulations (that doesn't go for local computer shops that build computers from the ground up, but we're talking about a laptop--which to date I don't know any local "mom and pop" shops that do that sort of thing).

I have an HP Pavillion v6500 laptop that belongs to a friend. It's preloaded with Vista so it cant be that old. What is happening is that when the power button is depressed all the LED's flash on for a second, including the power indicator, and then it just shuts off. I've tried this with just the battery and with just the power cord and no battery. Either way it does the same thing. This laptop does have a light that surrounds the power input and it does light up indicating that power is getting to the unit which indicates to me that the power supply is working. If anyone has any experience with this type of problem and would like to share some input I would greatly appreciate it. I'm not reluctant to open the unit up and do some soldering or such as long as I get some conclusive and reliable info.

This one has me stumped. I have two screens, one DVI and one VGA on an nVidia card. All was well until the other day when I unplugged the VGA monitor to use on a computer I was repairing. After plugging it back in my display settings are not correct.

My DVI, which is physically on the left thinks it is on the right.
My VGA which is physically on the right thinks that it doesn't exist and that it is the primary.

So my problem is that I can't access anything on the primary screen, which would include my start menu, display settings and generally anything that would help me out here.

What I've done so far:

Safe mode, change resolution, reboot.
Reboot with all combinations of displays attached.
System restore.

What I'm about to do:

Safe mode, uninstall the graphics card, reboot.

I'd appreciate any input!

Hi there! Im a bit confused about something and was wondering if anyone could help me.

Not so long ago I installed some Windows updates (not exactly sure what they were) and ever since my welcome screen has been absent when I turn off my screensaver. Instead I get the classic Windows logon box and frankly I can't stand the bloody thing.

Now usually that sort of thing wouldn't throw me but the most confusing thing is that the welcome screen is present when I boot up Windows and when I log off at night, it just seems to be absent when coming out of a screensaver.

I've checked the display options for my screensaver and I get the 'On resume, password protect' tickbox instead of the usual: 'On resume, display welcome screen' one. I've also checked the registry values and they say that the welcome screen is activated.

I would appreciate any advice because the damn logon screen is driving me nuts when I switch of my screensaver (which happens quite a lot during my day).

Thank you!

Hi,

I am having an issue with blue screens on an old friend's dell desktop. I suspect that it is the motherboard or the power supply on the dell but I am not sure which one it could be. Basically, I took their hard drive, wiped it, and did a clean install of XP SP3. Then, I made sure it ran fine on my computer. Upon putting it into their computer the computer repeatedly blue screens after the Windows start up screen.

What do you think?

Thanks,
XMike14x

Edit: Also wanted to mention the oddest thing... the computer starts fine in safe mode but not in normal mode. This only occurs on the dell computer, not mine at home. Maybe a conflicting driver issue forces it to BSOD? But... it is a fresh install...

Answer:Solved: Blue Screen Issue

You installed it on a different machine which means it expects to be booting up with the hardware from the other machine. Install the HDD in the machine you want it to be in and install windows again.

Edit: Drivers are indeed the most likely cause of the issue.

Hello All, I'm really about throw a laptop out the window!

I have a Systemax GREEN732E laptop. It is running Windows XP Pro. 1GB of PC2100 RAM.

http://www.supportforyourpc.com/tool...&submit=submit

The first issue was when it was started, the monitor wouldn't show anything. But it sounded like something was going on. I hooked it up to an external monitor, pressed FN F12, and nothing. I was about to start looking for a new LCD screen when I decided to take one of the RAM sticks out. After I did that, eureka, we have visuals on the monitor!

The system has 2 slots, each slot has 512 MB 200 Pin PC 2100 DDR memory. Of course, that was before taking that stick out.

So Windows continues on its merry way, and gets to the splash screen. Then the screen goes blank. After a minute or two, I get a STOP error:

STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x804D92C2, 0xF6E855C4, 0x00000000)

One of the reasons I found through research could have been faulty RAM. So I replaced one of the sticks with a brand new PC2100 512MB stick. Same thing, Windows splash screen, then this STOP error:

STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x804D92C2, 0xF6E815C4, 0x00000000)

When I try and boot into Safe Mode, it hangs on

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows\System32\DRIVERS\agpCPQ.sys

so I cannot get into Safe mode.

I ran chkdsk from Recovery Console. It said it found some errors, and repaired them. No bad sectors were found.

So I decided to try and do a Windows XP Repair install, thinking t... Read more

It seems you've done exactly what should be done in that situation.

The only things I can suggest are cleaning the contacts using Isopropyl Alcohol, doing a clean install of windows (not just a repair) or getting a new harddrive. Whenever that test finds errors on the drives it can be considered the first hint that the rest of it is about to go bad.

Hi. . .

Try a few things, please.

- START | type internet - select Internet Explorer (no add-ons) - test IE7

- Right-click on an IE7 icon and select run as administrator - test IE7

- boot into SAFEMODE w/Networking and test IE7 there

Was this a re-install back to OEM defaults... or do you own a full retail copy of Vista? If the former, did the laptop come w/ any trial offers for items like Norton Internet Security, McAfee, Kaspersky, etc...? What anti-virus are you running and are you using a firewall besides the Windows Firewall? I assume Vista SP1 installed?

That is weird about Office asking for the DVD each time. Do you have this same version installed elsewhere (you are usually allowed 3 installed copies)?

Hi,
I don't remember changing anything, only added a pic to my desktop. Now when I open a browser window (IE) things are all alittle bigger. Going to Google (my home page ), it doesn't fit completely into the browser window. All fonts on the desktop appear normal, however, the right most column of icons, has shifted away towards the middle of the screen by about an inch.
Coming here looks out of wack too. The logon boxes are more towards the middle of the page instead of more to the right like usual for me.
Any help would be appreciated.

PS. It seems that only web pages are out of whack, they don't fit anymore. The Google issue went away after I cleared internet stuff etc with ATF Cleaner. But this site's page still doesn't fit, as well as all other web pages. Spreadsheets and folders opened up on the laptop appear fine. Thanks

Also my Computer and the monitor both have a native contrast of 1920x1080 if that helps.

Hi there!

I have an Asus laptop running Windows 7 that is about 4 years old. Recently it stopped charging and would just die. Tried a bunch of things (using a different charger/ using a different battery from the exact same brand/series of laptop etc) to no avail. I took it to a guy to fix and it turned out to be the motherboard - which had to be replaced (ouch ).
Anyway, while this did fix the initial problem it unfortunately caused another.

My laptop thinks it is constantly plugged in and charging even though it is running on battery and losing charge. Because of this issue, I no longer get the notifications that my battery is low and it has caught me out!
I spoke to the guy who fixed my laptop to begin with and he has no idea why it is doing this, and also informed me that it's not great for the laptop either (which I was worried about).

I have played around with the battery options/notifications in settings but this does not help at all. I use my laptop a lot for full screen things (gaming, movies etc) so I'm unable to keep an eye on the battery level.
