Computer won't turn off, and it won't turn on either

Question: Computer won't turn off, and it won't turn on either

Just got a new to me P3 computer up and running. Sometimes during star up it does not recognize the PS2 keyboard. Which makes it hard to go into my password protected User ID. When trying to shut down it will keep a few things running like some fans and the CD drive. But it does not sound like the Hard Drive is spinning.

If I use the XP to shutdown it goes into this limbo stage of neither off nor on, same goes for the power button on the front of the computer. It will either start up the computer or turn it to the limbo mode. Upon starting up, I can use the mouse to get it all the way into a non password protected XP users screen but can't do anything without the keyboard working. In the process of setting up I have had everything working earlier today but this keyboard and limbo status has been an intermitent problem. What should I try?
Thanks

Preferred Solution: Computer won't turn off, and it won't turn on either

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

Answer:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

How old is the computer, what was the last change you made to the computer and when you last shut it down did it shut down correctly?

I just put together my first computer 6 months ago. It abruply shutdow in the middle of writing a paper for school. I couldn't turn it back on right away. after trying a few times, it turned on. All the fans are working even the fan on the power supply, the motherboards lights are on. My graphic card in on the motherboard. I think it might be my power supply because when I first put it together I didn't plug in the smaller power connection to the motherboard and the same thing is happening, black screen. It's like my computer isn't giving my monitor any feed. I will have more info when I get home. I can't get in to bios or safe mode.

after serching all night to find out why his computer is in limbo, i leave my brother's house without finding needed help. his computer won't turn off...the fan, a couple little lights until he unplugs it from the wall. first, the computer did a restart all by itself, he said, then it would not turn on, except the fan and little lights inside that won't turn off. he took out the hard drive and it functions in his other computer...he puts the hard drive back into the new computer and it will not turn on or completely turn off that fan. he tried the "hold the on/off button for at least five seconds" step and nothing changes. he has had the computer for a year and a half, so he really wants to figure this out. how can he even get it to turn on so he could do a safe start up? so far we cannot find a way to troubleshoot. he have checked the cords, perhaps there was a freeze up that began this loop and that's why the fan stays on? please say this is something you have heard of and there may be a solution. the advice we have found usually goes back to buying a new computer. thanks in advance, tea

I am using a client computer that is connected to a modem via a LAN cable which is in a neighboring house as far as about 50 meters. The host computer is there. The host computer is only using Internet Connection Sharing (without a router) to share its Internet connection with me. Within this network there are only two computers, the one I use (as client) in my house and the other one is the host computer as I mentioned earlier.

How do I know that the host computer is being turned on or off?

The purpose is to know so that I can use all the bandwidth from the modem when the host computer is not turn on. Because there are no restrictions on bandwidth from the host computer, and I just wanted to use all the available bandwidth only when the host computer is not turned on.

Both computers use Windows 7.

If you have got an XP install disc to do a recovery if it goes bad, i'd just hit the reset button, and boot into safemode straight away [press F8 as it is booting] then schedule a chkdsk and restart.

to schedule chkdsk...

Go to "my computer" and right click on the drive windows is on.

Select "properties" then go to the "tools" tab and click "check now" on the error checking section.

It will tell you that it cant perfrom it and ask you do you want to schedule it for next time...
click "yes" and reboot.Click to expand...

Hi everyone,

While turning on my computer the it turns on, fans are starting to move, but screen won't turn on, and the beep of the bios is not heard.

pressing the sleep/reset button next to the turn-on button computer goes off, pressing it again turns on the computer without any problem. (now I'm working with the same computer) i thought maybe it's the power supply that gives me problem but changed between computers, this still gives me trouble and other computer works good (besides its many problems ). any idea what to do?

Thanks in advance
Chaim.

BTW, while trying to write this thread I got all this terms that i didn't know how to call in English, like power supply - is that the box which connects to the power and to all the m-board and drives? is there an English computer terms dictionary?

So I had a problem with my T500's backlight initially and long story short, disassembling the computer has now caused the problem in the title. Whenever I plug in the battery/charger and push the power button, the fan will spin and the hdd will whirr a bit, but then after about 3 seconds, the fan will stop and the hdd will click off and cease whirring. The computer will no longer respond to the power button regardless of how many times nor how long the power button is held. I'm looking directly at the wires that carry power. Everything seems to be plugged in. I did the lenovo power trick (IE the 10 one second presses followed by the 30 second long press) and the computer does the 1-3-3-1 beep when I take out the RAM. The monitor is not plugged into it in any way, shape, or form. I do not know if this affects it. However, I have tried attaching the monitor and it still does this. Is there a piece that may have been knocked loose or something? I'm willing to try anything right now because at this point it's a literal brick now.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad T500 will turn on for roughly 3 seconds, then turn off and stay off.

Hi npesina, welcome to the forums,

there could be different reasons for the system behaving the way you describe, my suggestions;

remove all hard, SSD and optical drives to see if you experience the same,
remove all RAM, without replacing the drives, and test to see if you receive a system beep code,
remove all components which had previously been removed to test again.

The ultimate test would be to remove everything attached to the mainboard including the CMOS (BIOS) battery excluding the power socket, CPU and the fan. When you attach the power cable the system should come to life, the fan should run and beep codes sound. After that its really just a case of putting the system back together one component at a time testing inbetween each component replacement, leave the main battery and CMOS battery until last to save having to always connect / disconnect the keyboard in order to turn the system on.

If at any point you experience the same issue as now it may well be that the component you replaced at that point or it's attachment socket on the mainboard is the culprit.

Ad-Hoc requires that you restart the session each time.

Connectify pro has an auto start option that does this but it's a paid version, connectify lite is free but I'm not sure if has auto start.

Hey guys, little help here please.
Sometimes when I try to turn on IS it tries to turn On but everything greys out and nothing happens. Last time I tried it was about 4 hrs ago and since then its been hung up there. I can't open IS from settings now, Loading... shows up and it crashes after ~20sec. I can't turn off wifi because it becomes 'frozen' and when I press Back/Start button nothing happens but if I long press back button it show my active window is Start screen even though I am still in Wifi settings. After I release button wifi closes and end up in start screen.
I know if I soft reset everything comes back to normal. 99% I can even turn on IS. But why does this happen and how do you solve this problem (I know in the past some ppl used to have it)

Answer:Internet sharing doesn't turn on + cant turn off wifi

After a bit of searching this was the only answer I could find.
Remove/uninstall your nokia acount, install access point....you will get your internet sharing.
Not sure if that will help you or not but it's worth a shot.

I had it for nearly 2 years,Lenovo Y50-70 Touch -2 days ago while playing games on it, I smell a chemical smell coming from it so I immediately shut it down just in case. The next time I turn it on, it was fine the backlit keyboard glow red as usual but no display, and now it shut down after 4 seconds (with the fan running) whenever I turn it on except, sometimes It stay on (but still no display and no fan running).I got no experience into opening pc and such, I I tried opening it up and remove the dust that built us by quite a bit and tried to locate where the chemical smell was from, I though it was probably from the Fan or Coolers as it seems more strong there but not sure. After trying to turn the laptop on a few time the strong smell kind of dissipate a lot, and smell weaker.I been having a hard time trying to pinpoint just which part of the laptop is needed to replace. So if anyone could help me in the right direction it would be great. I just hope it wont have to buy a whole new motherboard x.xAlso idk if thats helpful information, but the first year playing games was fine, but the 2nd year and the laptop kind of overheated so I tried to cut down a bit and the fans were making more noises than ever. Wife updated Norton twice and had two Norton Firewalls and Windows Firewalls running together. Paid twice for the 2 updates. I can't turn my computer on. The fans and lights turn on for a second and then turn off. a few seconds later they'll turn back on and then turn back off. I've had this computer for 4+ months now, i built it myself. it recently started doing this but i'd just turn off the PSU (Power Supply Unit) and turn it back on and it woould fix it. now it doesnt fix it anymore. i've re-slotted the RAM (Random Access Memory) and pushed it in firmly, but that hasn't done anything. i've tried different power outlets and pushed everything into the MOBO (Motherboard), i havent messed around with CPU (Processor) because that's just a pain in the a**... i was wondering if there was anything else i could do before having to take it into a local repair shop, lol.

as for my computer specs

CPU (Processor): Fx-6300 AMD
GPU: R9-270x AMD
RAM (Random Access Memory): 8GB Ballistix sport
MOBO (Motherboard): ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
PSU (Power Supply Unit): Corsair X500 w 80+
Case: Rosewill GALAXY

thanks

Answer:Fans turn on, lights blink and then turn off/on repeatedly.

First, I would unplug everything that isn't necessary. Everything external except for the keyboard and monitor. Internally, just leave the CPU, RAM and video card installed. See if it turns on. If not, you might try and test the power button. Disconnect the power button from the mobo. If the pin headers allow for it, use the reset button as the power button. If not, you can use a flat head screwdriver to power on the computer (cross the two pins for the power button with the blade of the screwdriver). If you do this, just be very careful. Touch only the power button pins and nothing else! You could easily damage components by touching the screwdriver to the wrong thing.

Some motherboards have a power button right on the board that you can press to power on the computer. I looked at a pic of your board and didn't notice one.

If that doesn't do it, plug the power button back in. You might try and play around with the RAM. I don't know if you have 2 or 4 sticks of RAM, but try and boot the computer with only one stick of RAM at a time. If there's a bad stick, you'll find it through this process of elimination.

If none of the above works, then it might be a bad PSU.

Hello Folks,

I'm not sure if my issue is with hardware (possibly MB?) or graphics card, so please forgive me if I've posted in the wrong section. The first problem I was having was random blue screens of death that displayed graphic card driver issues. I was able to remedy that by updating my graphic drivers and have not had an issue since.

However, ever since then I have been running into another hardware or graphics-related issue that is random and completely stumping me. What is happening is, I will be on my computer, leave and turn my monitor off, and (randomly) when I come back to use my computer again, when I turn on the monitor there is no signal and a black screen (e.g. when I turn my monitor on my desktop will pop up and the light on my monitor will turn blue, when it doesn't turn on there will be a black screen and the light on the monitor stays yellow as if it is idle). I have tried swapping out the monitor to see if that was the issue and the same problem persists, so it does not appear to be my monitor or VGA cables.

The only way I can temporarily fix this issue is to reboot/restart my computer and viola! The monitor works again and I can see everything. This issue is very random. Sometimes I can go weeks without an incident, other times this is happening a couple times a week. I honestly don't know if it's my motherboard or video card or what. My PC isn't overheating, I'm not overclocking, and all of my drivers are updated.

I'm not sure what... Read more

Running Windows Vista Ultimate.

Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email.

Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working.

What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

I can't turn my computer on. The fans and lights turn on for a second and then turn off. a few seconds later they'll turn back on and then turn back off. I've had this computer for 4+ months now, i built it myself. it recently started doing this but i'd just turn off the PSU (Power Supply Unit) and turn it back on and it woould fix it. now it doesnt fix it anymore. i've re-slotted the RAM (Random Access Memory) and pushed it in firmly, but that hasn't done anything. i've tried different power outlets and pushed everything into the MOBO (Motherboard), i havent messed around with CPU (Processor) because that's just a pain in the a**... i was wondering if there was anything else i could do before having to take it into a local repair shop, lol.as for my computer specsCPU (Processor): Fx-6300 AMDGPU: R9-270x AMDRAM (Random Access Memory): 8GB Ballistix sportMOBO (Motherboard): ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0PSU (Power Supply Unit): Corsair X500 w 80+Case: Rosewill GALAXYthanks

Answer:Fans turn on, lights blink and then turn off/on repeatedly.

You can try a new RAM stick. What you describe can be: Anything overloads the PSU, or a failing PSU Bad memory in the low region. BIOS can't run without it. Bad CPU, or heat sink not in placeDisconnect the HDD and the DVD drive. (Power off, of course.)Power on. Does it show the BIOS?

This is driving me crazy. My HP has Windows 7 and everytime it connects to the internet (wireless connection) Windows Live Messenger opens down in the left hand corner taskbar near the start menu. I close it, and fifteen minutes later it will open again.
I opened the options and unchecked the boxes pretaining to 'Run Windows Live Messenger when windows starts' but it still repeatedly opens. I use hotmail, but i really have no use for Messenger. The program is not listed under add/remove programs. Someone please help me turn this thing off.

Answer:Solved: Windows Live Messenger-TURN IT OFF TURN IT OFF!

It should be listed in Programs & Features under Windows Live Messenger or Windows Live Essentials. If you still can't find it listed then go to get.live.com and re-download the installer, reinstall it, then uninstall it.

Answer:How to turn off the turn off the notification sound of Power Saver?

This should be possible. Did you check the Toshiba Power saver setup settings?
You can change the option called "Notification method" from "Sound+Message" to "message" only or "No action"

Good day!

My cousin asked me to troubleshoot the problem of his desktop. He was telling me that it is not turning on. I was caught by surprise when i turned on the PC when suddenly I heard some kind of explosion. It sounds like a blown capacitor or something to that effect. I immediately unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. I checked all the capacitors and looking for any damage and fortunately it's all ok. I smell the PSU to check if there's any short circuit occured and there was no foul odor or something. I removed the PSU from the casing for and opened it for inspection. I found out that the fuse exploded and broke into 2 pieces. I don't bother to repair it but instead I bought a new 700 watts PSU.

After replacing the PSU I turned on the PC but i found out that the CPU fan will spin for half a second and turn off. Led green light is on but no post or beep sound. I did some troubleshooting and these are as follows:

1. I removed the motherboard from the casing and put it on top of the table with cardboard underneath.
2. Clean the RAM stick and tried on other slot.
3. Clean CPU heatsink and fan since it was clogged by dirt and replace thermal paste.
4. Replaced the CMOS battery and move jumper pin 1-2 to 2-3 for about 2 minutes.
5. I turn on the PC without the video card, hardisk and keyboard.

SPECS:
Motherboard: asus h81m-c
CPU: Intel core I7
RAM: 8gb

Btw, prior to the above steps, right after replacing PSU I just clean the RAM and turn it on but ... Read more

I have a x201 cto using 64bits Win 7. The wireless adapter is intel advanced-N 6200. However, I found my wireless always turn off suddenly and I can not turn it on anymore (even using Fn+F5) until reboot. Does anyone have same experience? Please tell me what's the problem. Many thanks

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:x201 wireless always suddenly turn off and can not turn on again.

Yes, i have the same issue. Though it suffices if you deactivate and activate your WLAN adapter @ networkcenter, you don't need to reboot. This happened to me a couple of times as well.

I disabled Multi-Core in BIOS so i don't have regular lags.I always keep energy saving settings to "Maximum Performance" so i don't have regular contrast issues.I deinstalled ThinkAdvantage Access Connections so i don't have random WLAN Adapter "power offs".

I saw that there were others with this issue. I already tried things like resetting the ram, taking out my battery. Even with my laptop plugged in, not lights are showing up and the power button isnt starting anything. I tried to listen and hear if anything was happening, but no luck. I just to get help if there is anything I can do to trouble shoot or just figure out what the issue is so I can get it fixed . I was running Windows 10 on there.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15R won't turn on ! No lights will turn on .

Hi PARTH511722,
What is the exact system model?
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible? Could you try powering on with another battery?
Remove the memory and disconnect the HDD and try powering on the system with adapter only / battery only and check.
Does the adapter led stay on and stable or does it go off when connected to the system?
If the adapter led is stable when connected to the system and there are no signs of power, then the motherboard is suspected faulty.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

I just picked up the HP Stream 8 at the MS Store this weekend during their VIP event (25$ off 75$ or more). I actually haven't opened it yet, because I'm still deciding if I should keep it.
One thing the HP Stream 8 seems to have is GPS. I say "seems" because no one at the MS store even knew that it had GPS--- I had to tell them about it and pull up the HP website to show them the specs.
I've loved having HERE Maps and HERE Drive on my Lumia 521 because of the downloadable offline maps. I try not to pay for data since I'm near wi-fi 95% of the time, so it is nice that the GPS works without requiring data.
Although there is a HERE Maps app for Windows 8.1, I haven't been able to find an app that is like HERE Drive, with turn-by-turn navigation.
Is anyone aware of such an app?
Thanks!

Answer:Any Windows 8.1 apps with turn-by-turn navigation?

I've used CoPilot Live for a few years and like it's turn by turn ability. I think there is a try version on the store.

Can you post your computer specs, along with your operating system, your external gpu name Is this an external gpu or an internal PCI-E video card?

Can you also post the wattage of your power supply.

At a guess I would say your power supply isn't powerful enough to run the card. "2 seconds off" Is this a new card and what was the reason for the change? On the black screen error this sounds like a basic driver error.

In either case remove 'external' video card from your computer, download the latest drivers for your os and internal video card from the manufacturers website go to; control panel, programs and delete ALL video card related drivers then run this program.

http://majorgeeks.com/Driver_Sweeper_d6171.html

Delete ALL drivers.

Turn on your onboard video card in bios

Now install the downloaded driver for your on board video card, does your onboard work now?
EDIT OOPS! Welcome to the forum!

Does anyone know if the new Maps app being built for the phone and PC features voice turn-by-turn navigation? I know the current Maps app does not. You need to use Here Drive or another third party app for voice navigation.

Answer:Will the new Maps app have voice turn-by-turn directions?

I forget where I read it earlier. I think it was either ArsTechnica, The Verge or WinBeta. Cortana is supposed to give turn by turn directions and can be asked to repeat them. The maps app is also supposed to be designed by Microsoft, but also uses HereDrive. The actual default camera app for all phones and probably pc's, laptops and tablets is actually Lumia Camera.

New W510. (4318 CTO, 16GB, WIndows 7) Used new 640GB drive to install Windows 7 Pro x64 from scratch. Installed lasted versions of drivers from Lenovo W510 support site. Almost everything works, except the WiMAX. WiMAX shows up and seems to be properly controlled in the preload. It does not show up in my rebuild, so the HW is there. Among other things, I installed Power Management Driver, Power Manager, HotKey Features and the Intel WiFi WiMAX 6250 v13.00.0000 (both WiFi and WiMAX parts) but just the WiFi part shows up in the OnScreen Display when using FnF5. The WiMAX does not. The drivers show up in the Control Panel programs list and there were no problems indicated during installation. Am I missing something or is there a trick to the installation order?

Answer:W510 WiMAX cannot turn on or turn off with FnF5

A bit more information: Under Network Connections the WiMAX adapter is listed as unplugged. Local Area Connection 2 Network cable unplugged Intel(r) Centrino(R) WiMAX 6250 Seems odd to me that it is not listed as a wireless device. Any suggestions on how get the WiMAX working?

Hello everyone, I have an HP Envy j100t which I purchased in 2014. ever since yesterday it's been starting but the screen remains pitch black, no display at all. It won't get to start up page, just remains a blank dark screen even though the power light is on and there's no battery issue because it was on charge all night and the AC adopter is still in. I keep on having to get to get to the BIOS recovery screen, letting that update, and then it proceeds to restart. However when it restarts, it never gets to start up and there is the same dark screen- no display. I have to always update BIOS, take out the battery and AC adapter, put them back in, and then it will start. Or sometimes even that whole process might not restart it. Please help!

If you upgraded, did the problem exist immediately after the upgrade and before any updates were performed?
If it came with Windows 10 preinstalled, try to perform a refresh.

You can hear the fan run for a while but other that it just turns off. So what is the cause for a problem like this? i've dissasemly it and clean the fan there's no dust, i've remove the battery and keep the power button for 60sec read it on other forum, press many times the power button without the battery and the charger to reset the bios info, but without any luck.

had this problem even before the change.) Have turned off and back on by GPO and still have issue. We do not want to turn back the clock and use SSL (nor would our auditors permit it). Any suggestions?

Any help or guidance would be grateful.

Answer:Computer will turn on but won't

Hi,

Try performing a checkdisk repair and fixing the master boot record. Boot the computer to your windows xp cd and follow the on-screen instructions. When you get to the main menu make sure to choose "R" for repair. Then the computer will take you to a black prompt screen which is the recovery console.

The computer will ask you to choose the operating system so I believe, choose #1 for c:windows. The computer will ask you to type in an administrator password but simply press enter to skip the process if you don't have an admin password.

Then type in "chkdsk /r" and make sure there is a space between "chkdsk" and "/r". This process should take about 1hr to 1hr 30min. After the checkdisk repair has been done, type in "fixmbr" to fix the master boot record. Then after that type in "fixboot". Fixmbr and fixboot should only take seconds. Restart the computer and see if your computer is able to boot up.

So, what I did was put an ISO bios update into the DVD drive. The disk started to boot and got as far as abort or retry because there was an error of some sort. I pushed the power button then pushed it again to turn the system back on however it won't turn on. I don't understand it because at the stage of when the error appeared I don't believe anything really loaded on the system but I could be wrong. The computer won't turn on as in no lights turn on and fans spin at all? That has nothing to do with a BIOS update.

I know there will be alot of different possible answers but I figured I would at least post it up. I built my own computer a few years ago and it's been running great. I was having a heat issue at one point but I layed down some arctic silver and that fixed the problem.

Well two days ago my computer just started freezing randomly. I'd have to turn it off and back on only to have it freeze whenever it felt like again. (It could be 3 minutes in or 2 hours in).

I opened up the case and blew a bunch of dust out. Was hoping that it would fix this issue. It didn't.

I took the heatsink off the cpu and figured maybe I should clean off the CPU and heatsink and place new arctic silver onto it. Well when pulling off the heatsink the CPU was stuck to it and I bent two prongs. After swearing at myself I carefully straightened them out so they looked like all the others. After that I completly cleaned off the heatsink and top of the cpu. I place the arctic silver on, spread it out evenly and placed the CPU back on the motherboard. It fits back into it's spot nice and the little lever goes down to hold it in place. I attached the heatsink, closed up the case, re-attached all the cords, flipped the swith in the back of the computer, hit the power button..... and nothing! I checked to make sure everything was plugged in ok and everything seams to be in tip-top shape.

Now I know that it could be a multitude of things ... Read more

1. did you slapping yourself loudly? If you does, can we have a video of that?

2. Welcome to Techspot, Fetter.

3. Sound like your power supply is shot. Please have the power supply tested to confirm that problem. If it does, here you go. Buy another one, it should cost you 20 to 40 bucks for generic one ( last 5 to 1 years ) or you will have to fork over 50 dollars for a quality one, such as enermax.

4. Like you explained, that you have a heat issues in the cpu area, i suggest you to go out and buy the dual fan power supply to eleminate the air circulation waste.

5. Did you bent your Pentium 4? Did you break off any pins? Can you please take it off and confirm that?

6. To make sure, your motherboard and power supply is on, you will need to refer to # 5 and # 3. Try # 3 first.

7. If you have to buy new pentium 4, the used pentium 4 should cost 15 to 70 dollars, no big deals. Make sure to check it up on tigerdirect.com

By the way, I can see the Pentium 4 3.0gHZ for 77 bucks. It is affordable. Plus, I don't think you have a HT compatible motherboard, since you haven't indicate what kind of board you are using. Please give us your motherboard information, so we can determine if you are able to run in HT.

Here is the link.

Thank you and please come back here more often.

I've never seen it happen myself, but usually we just leave the computer on, so I wouldn't notice if it had turned on itself.. my dad, however, swears that sometimes he'll turn the computer off, it will turn off completely and stay like that, then later he'll come in the room and it's on. Hello,

Yesterday I could not turn on my desktop computer. it's a older Dell Vostro.

There is a light in the back that comes on, but that's all. Had no problem prior to this, so not sure what is going on. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Cantonman

Answer:Computer won't turn on....

Well, that certaintly maens that something in the power department got tripped. Check all power connections, make sure power supply is switched on, ATX (assuming your board is ATX) power is in, etc. There shouldn't be any other reason why your computer doesn't turn on, if something else was bad, it'd make a big fuss about it with the harmonios tune of your PC speaker.

Just remember, i could be wrong.

Hello everyone:

Yesterday, I went to turn on my computer and the minute I hit the power button to turn on the computer, the computer came on, but then turned off right away. Then it turned on again on it's own and ran for a few seconds this time but then it turned off. And then a third time it turned on again and stayed running until I turned it off.

Now, when I turned it on, once the power LED light would light up, that was when the computer turned off right away. When it came on both the 2nd and third time, none of my LED lights would light up. Also, nothing would come up on the monitor either.

Yesterday, what I did was unplug all of my power connectors such as the LED's and switches. Unplugging them and plugging them back in fixed the problem usually.

Come to today. Went to turn on the computer, did the same thing as yesterday. unplug the power cables again and plug them back in and it worked right away.

Since it did this again, I decided that I need to look into this problem further to see what was going on. First off, I blew out what I could of dust that was in the computer because the can of compressed air ran out and I don't have anymore at the moment. Then I started doing some more looking around to see if anything looked abnormal which it didn't to me. So then, I hook up the computer after unplugging it, go to turn it on, does the same thing again that it did yesterday. However, this time when I tried unplugging and plugging in the LED and sw... I got out my old PC because I need a file on it and I set it up and it won't turn on. Where should I look to try and fix it? Any suggestions?

Answer:Computer won't turn on

Power switch or power supply. Watch the fan blades at the back opening of the power supply as you press the power switch. If they turn 1/4 to 1 turn then quit, it is the power supply.
Used ones for an old machine will work fine. About $5.00 Easy to replace with a Phillips #2 screwdriver, removing four screws, then unplug a few cables, plugging new ones in the same place.

Ok, so a few weeks ago I tried turning on my computer and nothing happened. Someone told me it's probably the power supply, so I got a new 500W one, (had a crappy brand 450W before), but the problem still remains. When I connect the power supply to everything besides the hard drive the computer turns on ok, but when I connect the hard drive as well it won't turn on. (I know it's not a problem with the power supply, since thef ans move for a sec. when I try to turn on).
Anyone got any idea what might be the problem?

We were just in the middle of a big storm and finally the electricity is back. I tried starting up my computer and it didn't even boot up. My monitor - which is plugged into the same outlet set - is turning on fine. Before power went out, my dad disconnected my computer from the wall and nothing was plugged in.
I assume it got surged somehow, which would suck so bad since I have no money and it was a $1,000 computer. How do I check and how do I see what works and what doesn't? I've tested the computer in multiple outlets and I'm sure it's the computer itself. I've heard about rebooting the PSU or something but I have no idea how to do so. I built it myself so I can easily get in the computer.
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Answer:Please help, computer won't turn on

ok, if the computer was disconnected from the wall there is no way possible to blow the psu. i would check that the switch on the psu wasn't turned off by your father when he unplugged it. next i would try resetting CMOS. i'll be back in a second with a link to a guide on doing so.

edit: here you go How to Reset Your CMOS

I have seen several computer utilities that will automatically turn a computer off. Is there a utility that will automatically turn it on? I want my computer to turn on at 4 in the morning while I am still in dreamland, download my antivirus updates, do a complete scan and then download emails, etc.....would be nice if it could make my coffee too, so that when I get up at 6 a.m. everything is all good to go.

Is there such a program?

Answer:Help me turn my computer on

Not to my knowledge, why not just leave it on with the monitor switched off. I do that 90% off the time with no ill effects on my hardware.

Ok, so my problems all started a couple days ago when my internet connection kept going from "Network Cable Disconnected" to Now Connected status alot, every second sometimes. But then it started to randomly stop sending a video feed, and my monitor would go to power save mode. It seems whatever it is doing is not just affecting the video, because it also won't shut down, I have my computer set to shut down the computer when I press the power button, but when I press it it does nothing when it goes into this Blackout. The computer seems to be running, it's not making any weird sounds and the MB isn't beeping at me.

But now it won't even start up anymore, I'll turn it on and it will just immediately go black as mentioned above. I'm not sure if it's the motherboard failing, or maybe the Power Supply not supplying enough power to everything? I can't even get to the Bios screen anymore.

I should note that while trying to fix it before, I turned off the power supply while the computer was powered down, letting the light on the motherboard go off, then flipped it back on, and it worked fine for a while, but that doesn't work anymore.

Any ideas? My specs are in my sig.

Answer:Turn Computer on and.. Nothing

i would say you're correct in saying its either the psu or the board. if you can borrow a psu from a friend and see if their psu powers up your system. if it does then get a new psu, if not, i would say your board is shot.

i'm leaning more towards the board being shot though.

I'm having a problem with my T40. Sometimes it turns on fine. But normally what happens when I press the power button is that I get a low-level humming sound. No lights come on and the monitor remains blank. I have the same problem with the computer plugged in or running off of the battery. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Answer:T40 computer won't turn on

Well, the worst case scenario is that the graphics chip has worked loose with flexing. Reflow the GPU ($150) or replace motherboard ($100-$200). Hopefully, that's not the problem!

Hi guys,

I recently purchased an assembled computer from simlim. It was working until recently where i pressed the power button and the computer wont boot. The LED light on the motherboard is on and the fan wont move.

Tried turning it off and on in 5 mins interval several times but couldnt work. Tried testing the power supply also.

Any suggestions?

The specs that i know :

Processor : Intel core i3 @3.2 ghz
RAM : 4GB
Video Card : MSI R6850 Cyclone IGDS Power Edition
OS : Windows 7

Answer:Computer cant turn on

How did you test the power supply?

Did you ensure that all power connectors are properly connected?

This is an issue regarding the power supply or motherboard. Since there's no POST beep code (is there?) or anything of the like, there's no other explanation other than these two. You will probably want to RMA it since you just recently purchased it.

I had somebody that was going to upgrade my desktop for me, deal fell thur, but he had already taken the RAM cards out. I put them back in, but when I turn on the computer nothing happens but the fans turn on and the yellow light flashes and the dvd drives cycle thru, but nothing else. I can turn it off and on but it refuses to boot up

Answer:when i turn my computer on

Pull the RAM sticks out and then power on.If you get beeps, that's good. That means your motherboard/bios is working and has detected the missing RAM.If you plug in the RAM and do not get a display, and do not get any beeps, the motherboard/bios is not working. One of the RAM sticks is bad, or you are not inserting them correctly and it's stopping the motherboard from operating..The three most important things in computing:1. Backups, 2. Backups and 3. Backups.

Why won't it turn on? I have a HP desktop (DC7100c) and I turned it off last night and now it won't turn on. There is a green LED light on the motherboard that blinks approximately twice every second. I've tried jumping the PSU (Power Supply Unit) and the fan turned on.. Hmm.. So the Motherboard is on, blinking green, and the power supply works but I still can't get it to boot?? Why??? I'm COMFROOSED.

I've also tried to hold down that button in the inside with CMOS on the side of it but still, no luck.

I wish I had the money to get this fixed but sadly I don't. Hopefully someone can help me here. I also have Yahoo messenger (Phone call optional) if someone think they can help me with this problem.

Yesterday i tried installing a new video card (ati radeon 9550, to be exact) and after installation and hooking everything back up my computer wouldn't turn on. i figured it was my power supply, seeing how it was only 250 watts, so i went and bought a 400 watt power supply. so i hooked up the new power supply and it still won't turn on, i'm thinking it might be a problem with my motherboard or something.

pc specs:
hp pavilion a420n
AMD Athlon(T) XP 3000+ 2.167 GHz
512 ram
160 hdd 7200 rpm
crappy onboard video card (reasoning on bying a new video card)

if anybody has any suggestion on repairing my comp, please tell me. thanks.

Question: Turn off computer

runnnig XP SP2, the Turn Off Computer window takes about 2 minutes to appear. I had a file to fix that but I did not know where to put the file. Now I've lost the file.
I'd like to be able to click START, then click TURN OFF COMPUTER and have the TURN OFF COMPUTER window show up right away like it used to do.
Thanks.

Answer:Turn off computer

Why hasn't Windows XP SP2 been upgraded to SP3 - which was released over 4 years ago?

What's the model number of that HP Pavilion?
If you don't know for sure, advise what the product number(P/N) or model number(M/N) on the sticker is.

This problem is completely baffling me. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Here's what's happening. When I switch the power supply on, leaving the off position, the computer instantly comes on, regardless of the on/off state it was in before. The fans all come on, the GPU fan is at full blast (I've never seen it on so high). And it will remain to stay like this appearing to do nothing, appearing to be "locked". And then, if the power button on the front of the computer is pressed the fans go back to normal, and the computer sounds as if it's booting a normal boot.

Then most recently, after trying to debug this problem for a while, if after being in this "locked idle 'on' state", the power button on the front is pressed and the computer starts "booting", the mother board's speaker starts beeping. 3 long beeps, a pause, then a continuous repeating long beep.

What I've done to debug this is take out then video card, switch on power supply. This results in the computer instantly turning on into this locked state. Then I tried taking out the RAM, switch on the power supply. Locked 'on' state. Take out every single other device, keyboard, mouse, all SATA ports, and miscellaneous PCI cards. Power supply on. Locked 'on' state. And all leads to the same thing happening after the power button on the front is pressed.

Here are my system specs:
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-S3G
Pro... Read more

Answer:Computer Won't Turn Off

Continuous beeping typically signifies faulty hardware...motherboard or power supply depending on the BIOS brand.
