Computer won't turn off, and it won't turn on either

Question: Computer won't turn off, and it won't turn on either

Just got a new to me P3 computer up and running. Sometimes during star up it does not recognize the PS2 keyboard. Which makes it hard to go into my password protected User ID. When trying to shut down it will keep a few things running like some fans and the CD drive. But it does not sound like the Hard Drive is spinning.

If I use the XP to shutdown it goes into this limbo stage of neither off nor on, same goes for the power button on the front of the computer. It will either start up the computer or turn it to the limbo mode. Upon starting up, I can use the mouse to get it all the way into a non password protected XP users screen but can't do anything without the keyboard working. In the process of setting up I have had everything working earlier today but this keyboard and limbo status has been an intermitent problem. What should I try?
Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

Answer:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

I just put together my first computer 6 months ago. It abruply shutdow in the middle of writing a paper for school. I couldn't turn it back on right away. after trying a few times, it turned on. All the fans are working even the fan on the power supply, the motherboards lights are on. My graphic card in on the motherboard. I think it might be my power supply because when I first put it together I didn't plug in the smaller power connection to the motherboard and the same thing is happening, black screen. It's like my computer isn't giving my monitor any feed. I will have more info when I get home. I can't get in to bios or safe mode.

after serching all night to find out why his computer is in limbo, i leave my brother's house without finding needed help. his computer won't turn off...the fan, a couple little lights until he unplugs it from the wall. first, the computer did a restart all by itself, he said, then it would not turn on, except the fan and little lights inside that won't turn off. he took out the hard drive and it functions in his other computer...he puts the hard drive back into the new computer and it will not turn on or completely turn off that fan. he tried the "hold the on/off button for at least five seconds" step and nothing changes. he has had the computer for a year and a half, so he really wants to figure this out. how can he even get it to turn on so he could do a safe start up? so far we cannot find a way to troubleshoot. he have checked the cords, perhaps there was a freeze up that began this loop and that's why the fan stays on? please say this is something you have heard of and there may be a solution. the advice we have found usually goes back to buying a new computer. thanks in advance, tea

I am using a client computer that is connected to a modem via a LAN cable which is in a neighboring house as far as about 50 meters. The host computer is there. The host computer is only using Internet Connection Sharing (without a router) to share its Internet connection with me. Within this network there are only two computers, the one I use (as client) in my house and the other one is the host computer as I mentioned earlier.

How do I know that the host computer is being turned on or off?

The purpose is to know so that I can use all the bandwidth from the modem when the host computer is not turn on. Because there are no restrictions on bandwidth from the host computer, and I just wanted to use all the available bandwidth only when the host computer is not turned on.

Both computers use Windows 7.

If you have got an XP install disc to do a recovery if it goes bad, i'd just hit the reset button, and boot into safemode straight away [press F8 as it is booting] then schedule a chkdsk and restart.

to schedule chkdsk...

Go to "my computer" and right click on the drive windows is on.

Select "properties" then go to the "tools" tab and click "check now" on the error checking section.

It will tell you that it cant perfrom it and ask you do you want to schedule it for next time...
click "yes" and reboot.Click to expand...

Hi everyone,

While turning on my computer the it turns on, fans are starting to move, but screen won't turn on, and the beep of the bios is not heard.

pressing the sleep/reset button next to the turn-on button computer goes off, pressing it again turns on the computer without any problem. (now I'm working with the same computer) i thought maybe it's the power supply that gives me problem but changed between computers, this still gives me trouble and other computer works good (besides its many problems ). any idea what to do?

Thanks in advance
Chaim.

BTW, while trying to write this thread I got all this terms that i didn't know how to call in English, like power supply - is that the box which connects to the power and to all the m-board and drives? is there an English computer terms dictionary?

So I had a problem with my T500's backlight initially and long story short, disassembling the computer has now caused the problem in the title. Whenever I plug in the battery/charger and push the power button, the fan will spin and the hdd will whirr a bit, but then after about 3 seconds, the fan will stop and the hdd will click off and cease whirring. The computer will no longer respond to the power button regardless of how many times nor how long the power button is held. I'm looking directly at the wires that carry power. Everything seems to be plugged in. I did the lenovo power trick (IE the 10 one second presses followed by the 30 second long press) and the computer does the 1-3-3-1 beep when I take out the RAM. The monitor is not plugged into it in any way, shape, or form. I do not know if this affects it. However, I have tried attaching the monitor and it still does this. Is there a piece that may have been knocked loose or something? I'm willing to try anything right now because at this point it's a literal brick now.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad T500 will turn on for roughly 3 seconds, then turn off and stay off.

Hi npesina, welcome to the forums,

there could be different reasons for the system behaving the way you describe, my suggestions;

remove all hard, SSD and optical drives to see if you experience the same,
remove all RAM, without replacing the drives, and test to see if you receive a system beep code,
remove all components which had previously been removed to test again.

The ultimate test would be to remove everything attached to the mainboard including the CMOS (BIOS) battery excluding the power socket, CPU and the fan. When you attach the power cable the system should come to life, the fan should run and beep codes sound.  After that its really just a case of putting the system back together one component at a time testing inbetween each component replacement, leave the main battery and CMOS battery until last to save having to always connect / disconnect the keyboard in order to turn the system on.

If at any point you experience the same issue as now it may well be that the component you replaced at that point or it's attachment socket on the mainboard  is the culprit.

Ad-Hoc requires that you restart the session each time.

Connectify pro has an auto start option that does this but it's a paid version, connectify lite is free but I'm not sure if has auto start.

Running Windows Vista Ultimate.

Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email.

Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working.

What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

Answer:Vista Ultimate x64: turn off display, will not turn back on

sounds like your display drivers are crashing.

Do not rely on windows update drivers - go to graphics chipset manufacturer website and get latest drivers

Hello Folks,

I'm not sure if my issue is with hardware (possibly MB?) or graphics card, so please forgive me if I've posted in the wrong section. The first problem I was having was random blue screens of death that displayed graphic card driver issues. I was able to remedy that by updating my graphic drivers and have not had an issue since.

However, ever since then I have been running into another hardware or graphics-related issue that is random and completely stumping me. What is happening is, I will be on my computer, leave and turn my monitor off, and (randomly) when I come back to use my computer again, when I turn on the monitor there is no signal and a black screen (e.g. when I turn my monitor on my desktop will pop up and the light on my monitor will turn blue, when it doesn't turn on there will be a black screen and the light on the monitor stays yellow as if it is idle). I have tried swapping out the monitor to see if that was the issue and the same problem persists, so it does not appear to be my monitor or VGA cables.

The only way I can temporarily fix this issue is to reboot/restart my computer and viola! The monitor works again and I can see everything. This issue is very random. Sometimes I can go weeks without an incident, other times this is happening a couple times a week. I honestly don't know if it's my motherboard or video card or what. My PC isn't overheating, I'm not overclocking, and all of my drivers are updated.

I'm not sure what... Read more

I had it for nearly 2 years,Lenovo Y50-70 Touch -2 days ago while playing games on it, I smell a chemical smell coming from it so I immediately shut it down just in case. The next time I turn it on, it was fine the backlit keyboard glow red as usual but no display, and now it shut down after 4 seconds (with the fan running) whenever I turn it on except, sometimes It stay on (but still no display and no fan running).I got no experience into opening pc and such, I I tried opening it up and remove the dust that built us by quite a bit and tried to locate where the chemical smell was from, I though it was probably from the Fan or Coolers as it seems more strong there but not sure. After trying to turn the laptop on a few time the strong smell kind of dissipate a lot, and smell weaker.I been having a hard time trying to pinpoint just which part of the laptop is needed to replace. So if anyone could help me in the right direction it would be great. I just hope it wont have to buy a whole new motherboard x.xAlso idk if thats helpful information, but the first year playing games was fine, but the 2nd year and the laptop kind of overheated so I tried to cut down a bit and the fans were making more noises than ever. Especially when opening a new game or google chrome.

I can't turn my computer on. The fans and lights turn on for a second and then turn off. a few seconds later they'll turn back on and then turn back off. I've had this computer for 4+ months now, i built it myself. it recently started doing this but i'd just turn off the PSU (Power Supply Unit) and turn it back on and it woould fix it. now it doesnt fix it anymore. i've re-slotted the RAM (Random Access Memory) and pushed it in firmly, but that hasn't done anything. i've tried different power outlets and pushed everything into the MOBO (Motherboard), i havent messed around with CPU (Processor) because that's just a pain in the a**... i was wondering if there was anything else i could do before having to take it into a local repair shop, lol.

as for my computer specs

CPU (Processor): Fx-6300 AMD
GPU: R9-270x AMD
RAM (Random Access Memory): 8GB Ballistix sport
MOBO (Motherboard): ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
PSU (Power Supply Unit): Corsair X500 w 80+
Case: Rosewill GALAXY

thanks

Answer:Fans turn on, lights blink and then turn off/on repeatedly.

First, I would unplug everything that isn't necessary. Everything external except for the keyboard and monitor. Internally, just leave the CPU, RAM and video card installed. See if it turns on. If not, you might try and test the power button. Disconnect the power button from the mobo. If the pin headers allow for it, use the reset button as the power button. If not, you can use a flat head screwdriver to power on the computer (cross the two pins for the power button with the blade of the screwdriver). If you do this, just be very careful. Touch only the power button pins and nothing else! You could easily damage components by touching the screwdriver to the wrong thing.

Some motherboards have a power button right on the board that you can press to power on the computer. I looked at a pic of your board and didn't notice one.

If that doesn't do it, plug the power button back in. You might try and play around with the RAM. I don't know if you have 2 or 4 sticks of RAM, but try and boot the computer with only one stick of RAM at a time. If there's a bad stick, you'll find it through this process of elimination.

If none of the above works, then it might be a bad PSU.

Hey guys, little help here please.
Sometimes when I try to turn on IS it tries to turn On but everything greys out and nothing happens. Last time I tried it was about 4 hrs ago and since then its been hung up there. I can't open IS from settings now, Loading... shows up and it crashes after ~20sec. I can't turn off wifi because it becomes 'frozen' and when I press Back/Start button nothing happens but if I long press back button it show my active window is Start screen even though I am still in Wifi settings. After I release button wifi closes and end up in start screen.
I know if I soft reset everything comes back to normal. 99% I can even turn on IS. But why does this happen and how do you solve this problem (I know in the past some ppl used to have it)

Answer:Internet sharing doesn't turn on + cant turn off wifi

After a bit of searching this was the only answer I could find.
Remove/uninstall your nokia acount, install access point....you will get your internet sharing.
Not sure if that will help you or not but it's worth a shot.

I can't turn my computer on. The fans and lights turn on for a second and then turn off. a few seconds later they'll turn back on and then turn back off. I've had this computer for 4+ months now, i built it myself. it recently started doing this but i'd just turn off the PSU (Power Supply Unit) and turn it back on and it woould fix it. now it doesnt fix it anymore. i've re-slotted the RAM (Random Access Memory) and pushed it in firmly, but that hasn't done anything. i've tried different power outlets and pushed everything into the MOBO (Motherboard), i havent messed around with CPU (Processor) because that's just a pain in the a**... i was wondering if there was anything else i could do before having to take it into a local repair shop, lol.as for my computer specsCPU (Processor): Fx-6300 AMDGPU: R9-270x AMDRAM (Random Access Memory): 8GB Ballistix sportMOBO (Motherboard): ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0PSU (Power Supply Unit): Corsair X500 w 80+Case: Rosewill GALAXYthanks

Answer:Fans turn on, lights blink and then turn off/on repeatedly.

You can try a new  RAM stick. What you describe can be: Anything overloads the PSU, or a failing PSU Bad memory in the low region. BIOS  can't run without it. Bad CPU, or heat sink not in placeDisconnect the HDD and the DVD drive. (Power off, of course.)Power on. Does it  show the  BIOS?

New W510.  (4318 CTO, 16GB, WIndows 7)  Used new 640GB drive to install Windows 7 Pro x64 from scratch.  Installed lasted versions of drivers from Lenovo W510 support site.  Almost everything works, except the WiMAX. WiMAX shows up and seems to be properly controlled in the preload.  It does not show up in my rebuild, so the HW is there. Among other things, I installed Power Management Driver, Power Manager, HotKey Features and the Intel WiFi WiMAX 6250 v13.00.0000 (both WiFi and WiMAX parts) but just the WiFi part shows up in the OnScreen Display when using FnF5.  The WiMAX does not.  The drivers show up in the Control Panel programs list and there were no problems indicated during installation.  Am I missing something or is there a trick to the installation order?

Answer:W510 WiMAX cannot turn on or turn off with FnF5

A bit more information:  Under Network Connections the WiMAX adapter is listed as unplugged. Local Area Connection 2   Network cable unplugged    Intel(r) Centrino(R) WiMAX 6250 Seems odd to me that it is not listed as a wireless device. Any suggestions on how get the WiMAX working?

Can you post your computer specs, along with your operating system, your external gpu name Is this an external gpu or an internal PCI-E video card?

Can you also post the wattage of your power supply.

At a guess I would say your power supply isn't powerful enough to run the card. "2 seconds off" Is this a new card and what was the reason for the change? On the black screen error this sounds like a basic driver error.

In either case remove 'external' video card from your computer, download the latest drivers for your os and internal video card from the manufacturers website go to; control panel, programs and delete ALL video card related drivers then run this program.

http://majorgeeks.com/Driver_Sweeper_d6171.html

Delete ALL drivers.

Turn on your onboard video card in bios

Now install the downloaded driver for your on board video card, does your onboard work now?

I just picked up the HP Stream 8 at the MS Store this weekend during their VIP event (25$ off 75$ or more). I actually haven't opened it yet, because I'm still deciding if I should keep it.
One thing the HP Stream 8 seems to have is GPS. I say "seems" because no one at the MS store even knew that it had GPS--- I had to tell them about it and pull up the HP website to show them the specs.
I've loved having HERE Maps and HERE Drive on my Lumia 521 because of the downloadable offline maps. I try not to pay for data since I'm near wi-fi 95% of the time, so it is nice that the GPS works without requiring data.
Although there is a HERE Maps app for Windows 8.1, I haven't been able to find an app that is like HERE Drive, with turn-by-turn navigation.
Is anyone aware of such an app?
Thanks!

Answer:Any Windows 8.1 apps with turn-by-turn navigation?

I've used CoPilot Live for a few years and like it's turn by turn ability. I think there is a try version on the store.

Open the start menu. Select  "Control Panel". Select "Programs and Features". Find and select the McAfee program in the list then click "uninstall" at the top of the list. When it has finished uninstalling Windows Defender will activate itself.Go back to Control Panel again and select  "Security and Maintenance" . Does anyone know if the new Maps app being built for the phone and PC features voice turn-by-turn navigation? I know the current Maps app does not. You need to use Here Drive or another third party app for voice navigation.

Answer:Will the new Maps app have voice turn-by-turn directions?

I forget where I read it earlier. I think it was either ArsTechnica, The Verge or WinBeta. Cortana is supposed to give turn by turn directions and can be asked to repeat them. The maps app is also supposed to be designed by Microsoft, but also uses HereDrive. The actual default camera app for all phones and probably pc's, laptops and tablets is actually Lumia Camera.

I saw that there were others with this issue. I already tried things like resetting the ram, taking out my battery. Even with my laptop plugged in, not lights are showing up and the power button isnt starting anything. I tried to listen and hear if anything was happening, but no luck. I just to get help if there is anything I can do to trouble shoot or just figure out what the issue is so I can get it fixed . I was running Windows 10 on there.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15R won't turn on ! No lights will turn on .

Hi PARTH511722,
What is the exact system model?
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible? Could you try powering on with another battery?
Remove the memory and disconnect the HDD and try powering on the system with adapter only / battery only and check.
Does the adapter led stay on and stable or does it go off when connected to the system?
If the adapter led is stable when connected to the system and there are no signs of power, then the motherboard is suspected faulty.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Hey all I'm new to this forum but I've built a few computers in the past but have never experienced any problems like this.

Case: Powerspec Cooler master case
Processor: Intel i5 750(quad core)

Powersupply:OCZ 500 watt Mod X Stream-Pro

Here are some pictures of my build and a video of what is going on.

Video: youtube.com/watch?v=UbuFZJQnlds

As you can see the PSU, CPU, and Case fans are turning on and the Motherboard LED lights are blinking and then they quickly turn off. I dont think its a problem with the Power Supply because I have already returned one with the same issue thinking it was defective.

Hello everyone, I have an HP Envy j100t which I purchased in 2014. ever since yesterday it's been starting but the screen remains pitch black, no display at all. It won't get to start up page, just remains a blank dark screen even though the power light is on and there's no battery issue because it was on charge all night and the AC adopter is still in.   I keep on having to get to get to the BIOS recovery screen, letting that update, and then it proceeds to restart. However when it restarts, it never gets to start up and there is the same dark screen- no display.  I have to always update BIOS, take out the battery and AC adapter, put them back in, and then it will start. Or sometimes even that whole process might not restart it.  Please help!

If you upgraded, did the problem exist immediately after the upgrade and before any updates were performed?
If it came with Windows 10 preinstalled, try to perform a refresh.

had this problem even before the change.) Have turned off and back on by GPO and still have issue.  We do not want to turn back the clock and use SSL (nor would our auditors permit it). Any suggestions?

I had left my computer off for a few days, because i was playing an online game and leaving my character logged in. I return to my computer one day to find that it is turned off, i try to turn it on and nothing happens. There is a green light on the motherboard when the powercord is plugged in, i replaced the powersupply and the problem still persists. is tehre a way to fix this?

Answer:Help please, Computer will not turn on

Hi,

Start checking for loose cords, lose wires, etc. Double check the 12 volt molex is plugged into the motherboard and make sure the heatsink fan is plugged into the motherboard.

Know way, it would really help if you would list your specs...like motherboard, CPU, video card, drives, power supply watts and brand name, etc....etc. You get the picture of what would help us.

Post back after you take a look in that case.

I'm having a serious problem. My computer seemed to have died on me last night and I'm not entirely sure of what the problem is. These are the specs for my system (incase it helps):

CPU: P4 2.4, HT enabled
Power Supply: 480watt Axio Technologies
Mother Board: Asus P4P800
Memory: 1024 MB, 133 Mhz
Hard Drive: Maxtor Diamond 9 120GB
Sound Card: Sound Blaster Audigy 2
O/S: Windows XP Professional

I've had the computer for about 2-2 1/2 years and keep the computer on almost non-stop (the only times I shut it down is if I'm moving it, doing maintenance or software updates). As I said, I dont exactly know what the problem is. As far as I can gather, it could either be the power source, the mother board or the processor. I have a strong suspicion that its the power supply but just want to be sure before I got out and drop a hundred bucks on a new one. If anyone can give me feed back it would be greatly appreciated.

Nvidia 6100 nForce 405
2 GB DDR2 Dual Channel (ram)
AMD Anthlon 64 x2 Processor
400 GB harddrive
windows vista home premium
Model No.: T5426
I was turning my computer off one day and when it would not turn off, I held the power switch and it turned on and off real quick. Now when I turn it back on, it will turn off when it hits the Windows Vista loading screen, like right when it gets to it, it does not restart just shuts off and it is annoying. People are saying its the PSU which I doubt it because when I hit F2 or F10 to go to those menus when I first start my computer, the computer stays running perfectly until it try to boot it in safe mode or boot it normal mode.

This happened to me before when a friend messed my computer up and I found my old installation disk for vista and put it in and it worked perfectly, but now when I try to put the disk in, it shuts off when it tries to load up.

When all that happens, my computer will not even turn on when I hit the power switch, it only turns on after I unplug the computer, open the case, close the case, then plug it back in, but when I turn it off, it shuts off at the loading screen and then wont turn on again until I unplug it all again, this sucks.

My computer has been working fine for about 8 months since I built it, and then today it randomly shut itself off. I unplugged it and let it rest (assuming the processor was overheating), then tried again and it does nothing. I've also cleaned the processor/heatsink and applied new thermal solution. There's no way for me to actually check the temperature since it won't turn on, but I'm pretty sure overheating is out.

Here's my system:

Albatron K8X800 MB
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Processor
Geforce MX4000 8x AGP Video card
Powmax 400W power supply
Ultra 512mb DDR

I think those should be the only relevant parts. I assume this must be a power supply issue, or possibly RAM, but I'm poor so I don't want to just go buying parts, and don't have many extras to test with. Any suggestions?

This is freaky. I have a computer that won't turn off. It runs Windows XP. So you do your start turn off computer thing, and windows shuts down and the whole thing turns off.

But then, anywhere from 10- 30 seconds later, it turns back on by itself!

What the heck could be going on?

Look in the BIOS and disable everything that refers to "wake on" (Wake on ring, wake on lan etc).

Hellow guys, i'm also currently have an issues where, when i switch on the main switch, the computer turn on itself, i didnt even press the power button! And after a few second, maybe 2 to 3 or 4, it turn off itself again. When i press the power button myself, there is no more power. I cant turn it on.

So, i do the same thing again. This time I switch off the main switch and turn it back on and the same thing happen again, the computer turn on and off again, and i also cannot switch on the computer after that. The same thing happen the next few time, so i assume there is something wrong with the hardware, or something loose? Any idea anyone?

And, to be more specific, when i turn off the main switch and turn on immediatly, there is no power and the computer is not running. But if i wait for maybe a few minute after turn off the main switch and turn back on, it run itself, the same process as i mention above. So is it weird? Hardware problem?

Answer:Computer turn on and off itself? Help

did it just start doing this out of the blue? Did you do something before this started?

The first thing I'd check is the power button on the case, as you say it does not work and if it's jammed on the ON it could give similar issues.
Open the case and remove the power button connector from the motherboard's pins, and if you can install in its place the connector of the reset button. Both buttons are the same under the hood so it's not going to hurt the board.
Now try using the reset button as if it was the power on/off button.

I need help. I will tell all the information since I am not sure if any of this had to do with it. Sunday I ran a virus scan on my computer and nothing came up. I closed down the system and shut it off manually. Monday I am told there was a repair guy working on our cable. Our cable went out and then back on. Yesterday I tried to turn the computer on and it would not even turn on. I finally got it to turn on but it would not send a signal to my monitor as the monitor read "Monitor is fine, waiting for signal from computer." The hard drive light stayed on the whole time, but I couldn't get the computer to work. I tried all night to make sure everything was plugged in, and it was, but nothing happened. Any ideas? It is a emachines desktop computer. I looked in the troubleshooting guide and it tells me I should run a disc defragment because the hard drive might be corrupted (since the light stayed on), but I can't even get the computer to work. HELP. Thanks.

I continued to do this about 5 times and in the end gave up and turned my computer off. When I tried to turn my computer on the next morning all I could get was the "set up utility menu" . Any help you can give would be so much appreciated.

Answer:please help, can't turn computer on

Couple of questions:

1. What version of windows are you running?
2. Can you get into safe mode?

What do you mean by "setup utility menu"? What options are you getting?

I just got a brand new computer without a OS installed. Came home installed XP installed drives restarting the computer after each. But when i came to shut down my computer it would shutdown but then restart up again.

I have tried to fix the problem thinking it must be software but i am now not sure.

I Restored the system to the moment i first installed XP

Checked all Micosoft.com help pages which listed way to fix the problem - no help

shut down in the command promt so the "its now safe to turn off your computer" came up and turned off the computer manully (pressing the button on the front of the computer) but it just starts up again. (it does work if i use the switch on the back of computer but what a hassle)

I have no other problems with the computer or windows except this

Im lost, any suggestions, think i mite send back the computer if they let me.

hi I've got a machine with an intel 810 chipset, pcchips motherboard, and 466 processor running win2000prof and it doesnot turn off.

What happens is that you shutdown and it goes to the now safe to turn off your computer screen then just stops without turning itself off.

That I wouln't mind but when you hit the power switch on the case it does nothing the only way to turn it off is to switch it off at the wall.

After switching it off on the wall when you turn the wall switch back on it behaves as normal (that is it doesn't start) and when you want to start it again just hit the case power button and it starts, but of course wont fully turn off.
Any ideas? Motherboard; Bios; (Powersupply ok newish)

The past few days my computer has been getting really hot, and well a burning smell was coming for it. When this happened i stopped using it. I assumed it was becuase I haven't clean it in awhile. So i cleaned it and when I was done I tried to turn it on. Everything turned on for a second then turned off. The light on my motherboard turned on indicating that there is power. But it wont turn on, I can make it do the turn on for a second thing only when i unplug it and replug it in.

I believe its my power supply but I am unsure, I looked at it through the fan because i heard a clicking sound when i turned it on. I saw that some glue from inside had melted telling me that it had gotten to hot. I am not sure however that that is the promblem but before i buy one I want to make sure that is the actual problem. thanks in advance.

Answer:Computer does not turn on

This does sound like power supply

One way of identifying this would be to remove the power supply
ie unplug all power cables to CD HDD Floppy or any other Also M/B power Fans etc. Then unscrew the powersupply (from back of Desktop case) and carefully remove the power supply.
Then
Actually smell inside the powersupply for that burning smell (it usually lingers in there for a few days.

With the powersupply out you can inspect other components better to (ie m/b)

Choosing a new power supply, is dependant upon how many parts are in your computer (mind you as a golden rule, I always say 650Watt, usually takes care of everything)

My additions to the quote....

I will caboose on to the end of this thread. I left the laptop unplugged with the battery out, which is shot anyway, for probably three months. Now at start up it beeps three times and that's all. Blank screen, fan runs. Tried to boot from a OS cd but the optical drive doesn't start. Ideas, other than chewing my hind end for leaving it unplugged....

My computer was working fine yesterday night and when I woke up today I tried to turn the computer on but it would not turn on. I tried every step you can do to make sure if it is the plug. My monitor is working fine. The motherboard LED lights are working so it can't be the motherboard.

I touched the red thing on the back of the PSU and the power was on but as soon as I let go the power died. So is my PSU broken? Idk wat to do please help.

Answer:Computer won't turn on

By "red thing" I'm assuming that's a reset circuit breaker. And if it keeps popping then there is an overload or short. It sounds like the PSU is the culprit, less likely but still possible is a card (video, sound card, network) went bad or the motherboard had something go (yes that does happen and not as infrequently as you'd think).

So I'd try a PSU and go from there.

Hello everyone,

I have a 5 year old machine, a gateway, with an Intel Pentium 4 - 3GHz. Windows XP Pro SP3.

Here's the problem: A few days ago, I noticed that my computer was off, when I thought I had put it on "stand by", but then it started normally when I pushed the button. This happened a few times, then I noticed the clock was off by an hour. And then it wouldn't turn on at all, I checked that it was getting power, and it was, I plugged it back in, pressed the button and it booted up normally.

OK so I thought the battery was on its last leg, so I replaced it. I thought the problem was solved, but it isn't. With the box open, and the power on, I noticed a very high pitched sound maybe coming from the motherboard (I can't be sure). there is this green LED on the motherboard, and the only way to start the computer is to disconnect the power for a few seconds (until the green LED goes off) and then reconnect the power and push the button.

So I wonder if I should replace the motherboard or the power supply. I ran a benchmark with the CPU at 100% for ten minutes and everything stayed cool (thanks to the 13.5 Cm. cooling fan) and the voltages stayed normal, so I don't think its the power supply.

Is there any other way to diagnose this problem? I know the power supply is usually the first suspect, but the on/off switch goes to the motherboard, so it controls the PSU.

Thanks in advance for your advice.
Aloha

Answer:My Computer won't turn on

power supply even when it keep voltage. change battery on motherboard the clock after replacing should stay at all time. Why power supply?? tell me the brand. check brand and google feedback about it propably is the cheapest one

Well I recently tried to turn my gaming computer on and nothing happened.

It has been working fine for months. Everything appears to be connected correctly but when I press the Power button nothing happens.

There was a power cut this morning but the computer was not on then.

Specs,

Antec 900

Corsair 620W HX Modular Power Supply

Gigabyte Core 2 Duo GA-P35C-DS3R, Intel

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600

Corsair 2 x 1024Mb DDR2-667

Please help I really want to use it

Thanks

btw i tested the power supply and it works fine on another computer.

Answer:Computer won't turn on

Hold the power switch <ON> for 20 seconds to release all the voltages. If it still doesn't work, it can be one of many things.
Any lights anywhere. Does the fan in the power supply turn only 1/4 to 3 turns? Can you boot in SAFE MODE?
CPU fan failure; One memory module dead; Video card dead; power switch failure; cable or wire to the board from power switch has fallen off; Some device in a PCI slot has shorted out, such as modem, audio, usb, or firewire card failure.
Let us know how it turns out.

I just built a computer for my friend, and it won't turn on. When I hit the power button, the fans that are connected directly to the power supply turn on for a few seconds, than off for a few seconds, than back on for a few seconds and keeps repeating. nothing plugged into the mobo turns on. I have a new antec TruePower Trio 650Watt so i am pretty sure thats not the problem. It is a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 motherboard with a Core 2 Duo Extreme Proc. I also have a nvidia 8800GTS videocard, and 2 gigs of corsair memory.

Does anyone know why it isnt turning on correctly? any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Answer:New Computer Won't Turn On

that's normal for the DS3 mobo when you first use it, it`ll continue to turn on and off its all in the manual . It should stop doing it the next time you boot.

I worried when it first happened too but it all works fine after awhile, I would also recommend turning off the fan controls because if you watch, it`ll stop and start and that just worried me too much so now it goes full speed.

alright, so i'm running XP SP2
and the past few weeks were the best my computer has ever run
it has normally sucked, but it randomly started doing amazing

so the other day, i think my brother's friend was downloading some porn and i noticed my firewall and antivirus were both off, and i restarted and scanned and it said i had 3 viruses or something
and i did avast antivirus and it did its thing, and it still had i think one virus
did it again, and same result
now i had to start booting in safe mode b/c my computer would freeze up if i started normally

but the other day i get home from college and this is what happens

i start the computer, select safe mode and all that, and it goes to the light blue XP screen right before the desktop shows up
it says loading your personal setting, the desktop will show up for about 15 seconds (explorer.exe will not even load. no taskbar or icons) and then say logging off, saving something, then it will say loading your personal settings again but this time the desktop only flashes for a fraction of a second. and then it repeats but it repeats faster and faster each time

i don't know how to even get on my computer to get a hijack log or anything else.
please help guys. i know you guys are the best at any of this and i hope you can help me. thanks

EDIT: i think the virus was Vundo something. it kept appearing as different names on windows defender

My computer has been dead since yesterday, I was playing games on it and suddenly just froze completely. I shut it down by force, and when I tried to turn it back on, it wouldn't work.
When I turn it on, the fan spins for a second and then stops and the whole computer is shut down for another second, and restarts itself, but this time is fan is spinning a lot slower...
It is a second-hand computer...I've used it for a year now but it has been perfect until yesterday.
Please help!? What could be wrong?

Hey, I'd really appreciate some help on this.

My computer will not turn on after it's been disconnected from mains power. Normally, if it's off (standby) it will turn on as normal at the press of the power button, but not when it's not had mains power for any length of time. I've opened it up and the connections seem good. Also, the motherboard light is on.

This is not the first time this has happened too. When this has happened before I had to press the power button dozens of times until it came on (and afterwards worked perfectly) but I must've pressed the button a hundred of times and it shows no intention of turning on.

Thank you in advance.

Answer:Computer won't turn on

As i have the same problem with both my PCs I leave them on 24/7. On the rare occasion I do turn them off I don't unplug them because if I do have them unplugged for more than a few hours I will then have to plug them back in but not attempt to boot them for at least a day before they'll reboot. I'm guessing at some sort of capacitive effect coming into play. So unless someone else can come up with a definitive answer (in which I'd be interested) I'd suggest at the least leaving them plugged in, with the power switch on the back left in the 'on' position ans just use the "power" button on the front to turn the PC off.

I have a computer that is a few years old. after moving it, it won't turn off. it will go through the shutdown process, and power down for maybe half a second, than come back on. at first i figured it had to do with one of the cables connecting the front power button to the motherboard, but i checked those and it was fine. any ideas on why this is happening?

At first I would turn on my computer and it would shut off about every 30 minutes. If it turned off, I would have to come back and flip the power switch off and wait 10 seconds to turn it back on for it to start up again. Yesterday, I successfully ran a virus scan (up to date definitons-Norton Anti Virus) and no viruses of any sort were present. Of course after the scan completed (3rd time trying for it to successfully finish without shuttingg down) it shut down a few minutes later. I decided to leave the computer off for a while and go upstairs. I tried removing some dust from the fan (I was reading another website that it could be the fan) since it was also making a noise I was unfamiliar with...since my computer is usually silent. Today I went to turn it on, and it will begin to boot up for like 3 seconds and shut off. Any ideas what is wrong or what to do? :( Computers make me so aggrivated! Thank you...

Answer:Computer won't turn on

Sounds to me like a power supply. Does the power supply feel hot to the touch? Touch the case where the power supply is and see if it feels abnormally warm... Don't touch the power supply itself as it could be pretty hot if it is bad... You do not need to open the case to do this experiment. A power supply can be a cheap fix and they are pretty easy to change.

You need to go over EVERY DETAIL of actually installing components in a new build.

Do some Googling for 'Computer NEW BUILD Directions', etc.
