Preferred Solution: Laptop screen with lines, and deleted volume device

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi
My Laptop is 13 months old Dell I7 5558, i was facing this screen flicker issue previously ,where i got my Laptop Screen replaced by you ,but now I'm facing the same issue .
Previously before replacing i used to have just few flicker, now flicker rate got increased even more & Screen Goes black which is really annoying.
Even at the logo Screen I 'm seeing Green & pink lines
Sometimes nothing appears on the screen just  flicker of Green & pink lines & black Screen After that.Where i should  to remove my battery  & place it ,to turn on my laptop in this case.
Problem is not related to software, if that was the case flicker should not be at dell logo screen.
But FYI my Graphic Card Drivers are already up to date.
I Guess the problem is at the hinges or with the monitor or maybe related to mother board itself.
when my laptop screen is less than 90 degree i can see few flicker, when it 90 degrees or more than that ,continuous flicker & black screen later as like monitor looses power nothing .

Any Other Information Required let me know.

Hi all,
I have an issue with my three year-old laptop - every time it gets knocked slightly, the whole screen fills with blocky wiggly lines and I have to turn the whole thing off and back on again. I have a video of it but not sure how to post it - is there a way? Anyone know why or whether it can be fixed? It has good days and bad days, some days it doesn't do it at all, other times all you have to do it put a drink on the table and it sets it off!
Thanks in advance.

Answer:Laptop screen screen full of wiggly lines

sounds like a bad connection to the screen from the motherboard
this is usually a ribbon cable but will need either a partial or full strip down to check.
Make and model and we can find the instructions on youtube

I bought my granddaughter a Dell Inspiron 15 (3520) in October 2012.  I believe she has Windows 7 on it.  She said she is getting thick lines across the screen intermitantly.  She described them as like the old tv test pattern.  She thinks it happens when she is using the touch mouse pad.  It is no longer in warranty so looking for some things to try before I contact Dell.  She is in full panic she has all of her college applications on it.  Thanks for the help!!!lyn

Answer:Lines across Laptop Screen

Don't know about Dell, but I've come across plenty of Acer laptops that develop this or similar problems. In every case it was basically the result of using the laptop as a desktop PC - that is, always running on the AC power. Most laptops constantly charge, thereby overcharging the battery if you leave it fitted all the time. This causes the battery to eventually fail due to overheating. It may still work when the AC is unplugged, but won't hold it's charge anywhere near as long as it should. The first signs of this is that the battery will be a lot warmer than it should be after running on the AC power for a while. Eventually, the cooked battery starts causing fluctuations in the power supply, which can lead to lines on the screen, rebooting out of the blue, network dropouts, screen flickering, color loss - just about any intermittent problem you can think of. There's all types of symptoms. The easy way to test and if this is the problem, and if so fix it - is to remove the battery and run off the AC without the battery fitted. See how this goes over a few days, and if it solves the problem then replace the battery. You shouldn't use the old one again because it will definately be damaged. With laptops, you should avoid leaving the battery in when running mostly of the AC. In regard to the battery itself, the user manual should have some information on how best to prolong it's life. If it doesn't, I can tell you that a few years ago I wa... Read more

I keep getting this line across the bottom of my screen on my iBook G4. It goes away once you adjust the screen a bit upwards. It comes back when the screen is pushed back down or you push on the sides of the monitor. I've searched for a contact email at apple support but cant find any...what can be the problem?

Answer:Lines across laptop screen

What kind of lines are they? Black pixels, or kind of distorted colors?

If it's just kind of distorted colors, it could just be that there's pressure against the screen somewhere. This could be something as small as a pebble stuck between the screen and the frame.

If it's black/dead pixels, well, that's a whole different issue and hopefully you have a warranty on the screen.

My Compaq Armada M700 laptop running Win 98 has developed some horizintal lines across the upper part of the screen. The first line seemed to appear after closing an Excel worksheet. Since then another 5-6 lines have appeared all clustered together. They have what looks like a "reflection" of whatever is below them on the screen.(if I knew how to add a picture into this message box it would help). Any ideas? Is it a hardware or software problem? The screen is currently usable but any more lines will begin to interfere with the worksheets, the main use of the machine

Answer:Lines across laptop screen

Are they there when you boot into safe-mode? What about changing the graphics display drivers? Or changing the resolution? These steps will determine whether it is hardware or software problems.

hi guys, bought a reconditioned ibm t43 laptop 6 months ago, its now started to get white lines down the screen top to bottom. ive played about with the resolution but it makes no difference and its getting more as time goes by. any ideas.thanks in advance

Answer:lines on laptop screen

It is most likely one of two things:

1.) Bad video card

2.) Driver issues

-----------------
Try running the laptop in "Safe Mode", if there are lines down the screen the problem is most likely the video card going bad.

Next, try connecting the laptop to an external monitor to see if the problem remains.

I have two dell xps 12 9q33 touchscreen laptops.  Bought around 6 months apart in 2014/15. I now have on both laptops two vertical lines one pixel wide running down the screen about 4 cm apart. I have contacted dell by phone and they quote me 300 quid per laptop to repair. Personally I think that's poor service since both laptops are doing it. I have checked both laptops using diagnostics etc to determine the problem. All point towards a broken screen. Tested on an external display and the lines disappear. Is this just real bad luck or do I have a case. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Answer:Lines on laptop screen

No manufacturer will cover bad displays out of warranty - and the price is for more than just the display panel since it's a fused assembly - the entire rotating screen assembly has to be replaced.

...something inbetween?Hoping you fine peeps can help me with the red lines that appear on my laptop's display. Ever since I took my laptop to a shop for a replacement DC jack (I'd have done it myself, only I'm not confident with soldering), there are flickering red lines all over the screen where certain colours should be (green and blue are the worst - white's unaffected). They're not desperately bad, except when viewing images or video, at which point the screen's awash with them. Oh, and sometimes some blue lines flicker on and decide to join in the action, but then they go again, especially if I give the laptop the tiniest tap. They appear the second I turn it on, so I'm sure it's hardware related. The repair guy states on the receipt 'VGA cable has been damaged. Recommend replacement', but for various reasons I'm not sure I trust his assessment. Natch, it kinda makes sense that it's a cable problem - like I said, I can tap the notebook to get rid of the blue. But I don't know - for a start, what VGA cable is he talking about? And if he's right, would that be something I could fix myself? I'm confident taking my laptop apart, I've done it before for various upgrades and repairs, but I this problem is just a leeeeetle bit beyond my ken - hence the request for help.I'd appreciate a bit of advice and I'm happy to give more info. Thanks!Greg(ah, and the card is an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700).

Answer:Red lines on laptop screen - card or screen or...

I think he's talking about the cable that connects the TFT display to the m/board, and the symptoms sound just about right for this to be the cause of the problem. If you feel up to replacing it, I would.

I have an HP pavilion dv5 laptop and I am experiencing vertical lines on the screen which do not go away, and return after rebooting. I have read some other threads with similar issues; however, my laptop becomes completely unusable after these lines appear. This same problem happened regularly about 1 and a half months ago, but went away following a system restore. My battery is pretty much shot, and I don't know if that would have anything to do with this problem. When the lines appear I am forced to shut the laptop down and restart it, only to have it happen again. I took my battery out for most of the day yesterday, and I was able to use the laptop for an hour or two today before the lines returned. I have no idea what to do, and I have system restored like 5 times in the past week, but nothings has worked. Please help. [recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]

Hi
I'm new here and I have a problem with my screen, every so often I get random lines going through it and it can happen at any time and sometimes not at all example: http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll156/charlemagne53/IMG_4344_zpslwy8zlbg.jpg
They happen randomly in short bursts like it will last 5 seconds then stop or if not I close my laptop and open again and its back to normal. I'm not sure if its a driver problem or hardware since my laptop is still fairly new and this issue only started not too long ago.
Its an MSI laptop using windows 10

Hi BC,

A (relatively new) Windows 8 (x64) Toshiba laptop has recently started to get horizontal lines across the screen making it illegible. This happens nearly every time the laptop wakes from sleep/hibernation mode or after being idle for a while.

The screen reverts to normal upon system reboot, so I assume it's software related... Any help/advise solving this problem would be most appreciated!

Hi

to the Bleeping Computer forum.
Please post the exact model number of your laptop in next reply. Also enter BIOS setup and inspect whether the lines can be seen from there. Usually you can enter the BIOS setup by pressing F2 during powering on.

If you can post a screen shot of the issue, that will also be helpful .

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400, and about a year ago I sent it into Dell and had my LCD screen replaced for a pixel issue. Soon after I started to get colored vertical lines that prevent me from using the screen (my warranty has run up and it has been so long I cannot send it back to Dell). The screen looks very similar to this screen: http://www.asklaptopfreak.com/wp-images/color-lines-on-lsd-screen.jpg

When I hook the computer up to a monitor or even a projector I can see everything and use the computer fine, the screen remains unusable with the vertical lines though. I put the laptop aside for a few months because I had no idea how to fix it. Randomly I turned the lap top on and it worked perfectly, no lines and no problems. After about a month the computer suddenly washed out and the lines appeared. Saddened, I again put the computer aside for a few months. About three weeks ago I tried to use it again and it worked perfectly but tonight it has washed out and the lines again appeared. I'm wondering if I need a new LCD screen or if it is simply a connection issue since the screen works fine sometimes. I appreciate any help or advice. If anyone has a step by step guide on how to fix a connection issue I would love that. Thanks

Answer:Vertical lines on laptop screen

Looking at the pictures here: http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2006/08/17/bad-video-on-lcd-screen/
your display resembles example #1 and example #7 and the repair person, unfortunately said he replaced the LCD screen in both laptops.

But before you replace the screen again, since this started happening soon after Dell replaced the screen, it could be a bad connection.

Start here (I assumed your Inspiron 6400 is running Vista but at this point I think the OS doesn't matter)

My laptop screen has developed vertical lines which seem to be increasing in number and intensity. Does it mean the screen is at the end of it's life? The laptop is about 6 yrs. old.

Answer:vertical lines on my laptop screen

Could be the cable on the hinge side that is getting worn. Try moving the lid to and fro and see if that alters the display - either better or worse.

Answer:my laptop screen is just a mass of lines

Might be repairable. Best chance is if the connector is loose or you can actually fix a wire. Some part of the display is bad. Could be from motherboard to tft panel.1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

Hello, I bought a new expensive hp laptop from official hp website with extended warranty and all expecting that if there is any issue, I will at least be helped with on it. The laptop was delivered around 15th Aug and by the end of month there was the below issue:the screen started blurred up with vertical lines throughout. Initially, it was just for a milisecond and unfortunately, I ignored it(Still regret that). Soon it increased rapidly, I contacted the support and they mentioned that replacement is only within 15 days(Even a 50k iphone gets an year). After the first complaint technician came and updated the drivers and said "Sir, the issue will not come again now."Issue started in 2 days again, new complaint registered, same technician came and this time cleaned up the laptop and said "Sir, the issue will not come again now."Issue started in 2 days again, new complaint registered, this time technician came and replaced the motherboard and said "Sir, the issue will not come again now". The issue still persists. Can you please tell me what should I do to get this resolved. I am forced to restart the laptop in middle of my meetings to see whats on my screen at least twice a day. Thanks,Aayush

Answer:Vertical lines across laptop screen

Somehow technicians have visited you 3 times and they will come a fourth time if you call in and say it is not yet fixed. What would you like to see happen? Not that I can actually make anything happen. This is not HP Warranty Support but just fellow end users volunteering to help others. It seems the screen may need to be replaced.

Hi,What is the correct full model name, product number of your laptop? Please verify.http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00033108Do a hard reset and check if it resolved: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01684768It can be either display connector cable became loose or damaged while moving or display panel itself damaged. You may have to first try disconnecting and reconnecting connector cable carefully and check. Get help from certified technician to do this for you. After you provide me with correct product number, I would be able to give you HP part number of display panel and connector cable.RegardsVisruth

I have an ACER laptop that is about 2 years old with very little usage.  It runs Windows 7 Home Premium.  Some time ago on the left side of the monitor screen, about 1.5" from the edge of the screen, a band, about 1.5" wide, made up of very, very fine multi-colored lines, appeared running vertically on the screen.  It reminds me of the old Windows Defrag program that showed you how fragmented your drive was with colored lines.  Has anyone ever had this happen and is there a "cure"?        Thank you.................

Answer:Colored lines on laptop screen

Good evening 02bin3Your issue is not that un-commonYour screen defect can come from a couple of different items. Bad LCD: can be repaired by replacing the LCD screen assm. This is the most common issue and more than likely your issueBad LCD cable: can be repaired by replacing the LCD cableBad video chip: Can be repaired but only by a pro that does BGA re-ballingIf you have a extended warranty you get it repaired by ACER      Hope this help you, Mike

Hello.
Like the title says I see vertical lines on my Dell Precision M3800 QHD touch screen.
I first noticed a few months ago(like 4-5 months) but it stopped until last week. It starts as only 1 line, but as the computer starts to heat up more appear and in different colors. Some guys from the store told to connect it to an external display and check if the problem persists. Well, I tried it and the lines also appear on the external display. Does this mean it's the graphics card and not the screen? Is there any way to know for sure? Also, if it's the graphics card is there any way to replace it without having to replace the whole motherboard? If yes, can i change from a Quadro K1100M to any GTX?
Thank you.

PS(1)- I don't have any warranty

PS(2)- I also noticed that when watching one of those videos from youtube to look for dead pixels the line(s) only show up on specific colors. For example, when playing the video on full screen I only see the line on green and purple.

the bottom half of my screen dont work have toa gust the screen for it to work and then some times still dont work

Answer:how to fix my laptop screen that has vertical lines through

First of all try an external monitor on it to make sure it really is a screen fault. If that does it too then let us know.If it is the screen itself then you either repair or replace it. Sometimes screen problems can be due to the cable connecting between the computer and screen (they give trouble where it hinges back and forth). In these cases you can often see a tell tale change by watching the screen then closing it slowly until it is nearly down. The connectors can also work loose at either end.EDIT: I've just realised that you probably mean "adjust" the screen. If so what particular adjustment do you make that temporarily fixes it?Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

Hi there, I turned my laptop on and all I got was these horizontal lines white/gray ones throughout the screen. I can hear everything loading correctly in the background, and I can even get the screen to display a nice correct image if I bend it at the top in and out a little bit.
So what do you guys think it could be? I was thinking maybe a bad inverter, or ribbon cable? I'm not sure and would appreciate any info so that I can order a whole new screen, or a specific part, thank you.

Answer:Horizontal lines across laptop screen

Also if it helps I plugged it into a monitor through VGA and it worked fine. I also reseated the cable from the board to the screen and that did nothing.

Howdy.
I have an old Compaq Armada E500 laptop, and it has worked well since I bought it second hand about a year ago. However, it now has short, horizontal lines scrolling vertically down the screen. Each line is about 1 to 2 inches long, and they can get quite bad sometimes (as in lots of lines). These lines do not appear all the time, sometimes they are there from boot, other times they appear after using the laptop for a bit. Does anyone know what could be causing this problem? I know the laptop is a bit past it, but I was wondering if it is something that can be fixed, like driver issues or something.
Thanks.

Answer:Scrolling lines on laptop screen

horizontal lines scrolling vertically down the screen? are they in motion like a raster? I would say offhand that this could be a over heating of the gpu, which you wont be able to help, and it'll probably get worse if you use your lappy a lot. however they could also be a problem with the ribbon cable. A lot of lappy's have lines going vertically down the screen, this is their problem. I would probably first take off my screen (which is actually quite a project as your hinges are very secured into the frame of the base.) and make sure that main ribbon cable is in straight and securely. This will no doubt trash any warranty you had unless your a legit certified repair person.

anybody seen this before? what are my options? any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer:Solved: Lines in laptop screen

Well it sounds like you need ether a new screen or inverter. To be honest i would just take it to a computer repair shop as these things can be quite fiddly to do. Did the screen progressively become like this or did it just happen? did it start to get dimmer first?

Answer:Toshiba laptop screen has lines

Connect to an external monitor or TV and see if its the same on that.
If not then either a bad connection cable or bad screen
if the same on the external monitor update the drivers if still the same then possibly a problem with the graphics chip.

A week or two a go my laptop developed a verticle line of white sort of broken pixels down my screen. I thought I must have bashed it and made something come loose.

At first the line came and went when i moved my laptop screen, and i thought meh maybe if i leave the laptop to cool it will fix it. That didn't happen though and after a few hours the line stuck on. The only way to make it dissapear was to flex my laptop screen, but when i unflexed it the line came back.

A few days went on and now my laptop has developed 4 verticle lines of colour (one red, one green, another red and one white).

When i flex my screen they all dissapear. So thats why i'm guessing something must be loose and it IS fixable.
What do you fellows thinks?

All help appreciated, and i'd rather not buy a new screen =D

Answer:Laptop screen with verticle lines

Your LCD screen is damaged, maybe from setting something heavy on top of the closed laptop. A repair shop may be able to fix this, but I doubt if there's anything you can do yourself

A few months ago a thin green vertical line started showing up in my screen from top to bottom whenever I would move the screen a certain way. When I'd stop moving the screen, the line would go away. Eventually this turned into 2 lines, with about a millimeter in between. Then red line started popping up. Now I'm at (from right to left) 2 green lines, a red line, and another green line, all really close to each other about 1/3 of the way away from the right side of the screen.

This would be ok if they only showed up when I moved the screen, and then went away. But now it takes a lot of gentle moving and nudging in order to go away. And sometimes the laptop is just sitting by itself, and it pops up out of nowhere. It's being a real pain to take out now, getting more and more stubborn each day. Soon I'm sure it's just going to stay there and it will be impossible to get rid of.

I called into HP and they told me to send the laptop in. I would, but I just started my second semester at college and I really do need my laptop. So I said I'd send it in in the summer and they said fine. The problem is, the more I wait, the worse it becomes. So anybody have any idea of how I can get rid of it?

By the way, the lines show up even when I'm just booting up my PC. They don't show up in an external monitor. So I'm pretty positive that there's something loose inside (especially since moving it around temporarily fixes it)

So any help is ap... Read more

Answer:Green and red vertical lines down my laptop screen

Sounds like your screen is going :S
Best idea is to go to a local computer repair shop and see if they might be able to fix it. Although you could take the laptop casing apart and check all the connectors are properly plugged in... Also, if the laptop has been dropping or knock could have cause some damage to the screen or graphics card (rare, but does happen )

Have a Toshiba Satalitte 1903 S303 and yesterday, I walked in the room and the screen was flickering in a very erratic way. Very brief flash of vertical lines, all very close together and in a 2or 3 inch band along the right side of the screen. Very brief flashes of the whole screen at the same time. Some vertical lines along the lower left edge as well. No apparent repeating of the position or number of lines. I would guess the lines were 30 or 40 to the inch. Very thin, very quick. The laptop had been on for about an hour. I shut down my printing program and exited windows for a shutdown. Windows seemed to perform normal during this flashing sequence, so I suspect the electronics controlling the viewing LCD screen.

I wonder if this is a sign that the LCD is giving up on me. I've had two LCDs on other laptops go bad before, but in those cases, one simply bit the dust while the other one lost 95% of it's brightness. Never had this reaction on screen before. Any suggestions? Toshiba simply says it needs to be seen, won't speculate or provide service on this 4 year old machine.

Answer:Laptop screen is flashing lines eratically

Sounds like a problem with the LCD trying to decide what crystals/pixles should be what color. I would contact toshiba and see if you can do anything (IE Replace the LCD screen). Most times you can even find a new one (the entire top panel of your laptop) for cheap.

I have a gateway m2624u series. It started these vertical lines, then the screen would go to dark gray; and then it would freeze. I would have to turn off and on again a couple of times for it to get going again. I had Windows Vista; thought I might have a bug couldnt get off; so crashed the computer; with no back up disk; put windows 7 on it now. It didnt help the problem; now I just get different black out screens, white and some yellow with green stripes. I have tried so many things; even what they call the Nanor Fix.

Answer:laptop; vertical lines, screen goes blank

sounds like a possible hardware failure.1st, open the small covers on the underside and remove then replace the memory modules, they may have become loose, try one module at a time if you have more than one.2nd, if its still under warranty return it.3rd, if its not warranty, and you feel brave, you should attempt to take it apart and reset all connections to make sure thay are not loose, you may even find a video on youtube to show you how to do this on your model, its not really difficult, HOWEVER, save all your files, because its always possible to brick your machine.4th, take it to a repair shop and be prepared for high costs.i hate computers!but cant help myself....

I have a Toshiba Equium P200D-139 laptop and the screen stopped working. It lights up but the display consists of vertical lines, which slowly fade into a black screen.
I tried it on an external monitor and it worked fine, (so presumably cannot be a faulty graphics card/motherboard). So, I thought it was likely to be either be the inverter or the screen itself.
After trying a new inverter with no success, I bought another second hand screen. However, the new screen has the exact same problem with the ‘horizonal lines’ display. Just occassionally, I catch a glimpse of a partial Vista screensaver for a split second but then its back to black. I’m not a technophobe, so any info would be very much appreciated.
Please help, as it is driving me up the wall!

Hello. I am new here and hoping that somebody might help me. I have a Toshiba Satellite L505 laptop. I have read the topics about vertical lines on laptop screens here but my case is different. I suddenly got these vertical lines all over my screen, about 1 pixel thick and 7 to 8 pixels apart and that when it appears, the system crashes and freezed. I tried to reboot but when the desktop icons start to appear then the red vertical lines also appear and that the system freezes again. When in safe mode, it works fine. So i tried to re-install the windows 7 32bit system from my package. After installation it works fine. But when I restarted my laptop again it showed red vertical lines and system crashed. Everytime this happens I have to re-install my windows 7 again and again just to use my laptop. For now, I don't shutdown my laptop because i know that when I will start it up i will have the same problem again and will have to re-install. I don't think that this relates to loosed connections or overheating because I never shutdown my laptop for a week now. I also tried to open my laptop to inspect the graphic card (ATI Radeon) but I cannot find it, perhaps it is integrated to the motherboard? I noticed that something triggers this vertical lines to appear like: (1) running MS DOS programs; (2) hibernating, idling and dimming to save power; (3) restarting; and (4) when administrator permission pop-up appears. Now I am avoiding these actions to prevent system freeze and... Read more

Answer:Horizontal Lines on Toshiba Laptop Screen

Hi

No as that is a place to say hi, the software, hardware forum areas are where to ask questions on technical matters, but I have moved your post to the Hardware forum as its closest to your issue at present.

What Windows version do you have installed?
What model Toshiba is it?
Did you install any new software before this happened?
If you boot in to safe mode (F8 at boot) do you get the same lines?

At worst it could be the LCD panel on its way out, has the laptop been dropped at all?

I put in a new hard drive in my laptop and now every time it starts up the whole top right quarter of my screen has different colored vertical lines. I put the old hard drive back and still have the same problem. I checked the cable connection to the motherboard and it is fine. Is it possible that I somehow damaged the flex cable that goes to the LCD or could it be something else?

Is there a generic flex cable to the display that I could buy somewhere?

Answer:Vertical Lines On Laptop Screen: Is Cable Damaged

Hi sparkplug

It could be a loose connection on either end of the cable or a connection to the lcd screen itself being loose. Does your laptop have a connection for an external monitor? If so hook one up and see if it has a problem. Also try opening and closing the screen section and watch to see if there is any change i the display. Laptops usually have no generic parts and you will need to contact the manufaturer for any replacements. Posting the make and model of your laptop can help others here give you better advice.

Answer:Half laptop screen has horizontal rainbow lines

That's pretty much common in laptops/notebooks, it's a hardware issue. Try to connect the laptop to an external monitor; if everything is displayed correctly on the external screen, then your room-mate's laptop has a faulty LCD screen and/or inventer.

It works fine on an external monitor and has no other issues whatsoever.

Bad graphics?

Possible bad connections? (i havnt even looked at it yet, thought id post and get feedback while im doing it)

Also, can i test it by connecting it to another laptop? (could it damage the good laptop?)

And finally, how interchangable are laptop LCD screens?

Any info or thoughts much appreciated

So today I opened my acer aspire 5100 and i logged on to vista. And as i was getting started i noticed a small (width) yellow line which went top to bottom on the left. I thought something was wrong with the screen. So i emailed acer and that was not a big help. Now i have 3 lines that change colors and i am worried more will appear. Later on i applied presure and pushed left and they went away. But i am not sure how to keep it there. After i let go and the screen moved a little right and the lines appered. I think this is becuase something moved the screen right weather it was from a trip or something else. What can i do to get rid of the stripes or vertically adjust the laptop? Thanks Slamdunka

Answer:Laptop Screen, Strange lines down left side.

I'd let whoever sold it to you fix it - you talk about a trip but don't seem sure - if you can't remember doing anything that could have damaged the laptop I wouldn't be guessing while talking to them - warranties only cover it if it is the result of parts being defective.

it looks like your hard drive has gone bad. i have a Y70 touch. i have upgraded to windows 10 3 times in the past year and each time the hard drive has gone bad shortly afterwards. although my screen flickers were not nearly as bad as yours, they were very annoying until the hard drive completely died the first 2 times. this last time i knew what was happening and was able to catch the problem before the hard drive completely failed. i had windows 10 installed without all the extra lenovo and other manufacturer programs that i didn't need and weren't compatible with windows 10. i never tried rolling back the system but i was told it wouldn't have helped at the point when the hard drives had failed.

Hello all,

Laptop and graphics card (nVidia GTX480m) were running smoothly until I bumped the screen when I went to put the laptop down. Since then, there have been a few yellow vertical lines which at first I thought were messed up pixels, but then I noticed blurry yellow dots and ghosting around some characters. These yellow spots and vertical yellow lines only show up on white or very nearly white backgrounds. As I type, more yellow spots are created around and to the right of some characters. Another change I noticed is that the splash screen when I boot the computer has gone from black to royal blue. This is not the product of a mod or update, and only began after I bumped the screen. When I plug the laptop into my television via HDMI, the TV screen appears normal. I updated my drivers and that did nothing, then I tried reverting back to an older driver and that did not work either.

Could this be the product of a loose connector behind the laptop screen? Or is it more likely the screen itself is now going? Is there something else which could cause this that I am not aware of?

Thanks for your help

1) A couple of months ago 3 vertical lines have appeared on left of laptop screen.  Then the last couple of weeks all of a sudden the entire screen turns into a grey color with vertical lines.  Happened three times already and don't know what to do.  Not too computer saavy (I'm a senior) and will bring it in for repair but I don;t want to get cheated and want to be at least knowledgeable on what it might be.  Read something about an inverter (don't know what this means).  When this happens I obviously turn off the pc wait a couple of minutes and turn it back on.  Just do not know what is causing this. Perhaps I need to change the screen, is this costly? 2) Also I'm on a wireless network and the pages sometimes have a delay in loading or it says it's not connected.  Have called my provider and they do not know what the problem is.  Fox six mos their service worked fine, all of a sudden it doesn't and of course they blame my pc.  Would anyone know why this would happen intermittently ? Thanks in advance. Appreciate all of your help..........

Gif of symptoms here.1.5 year old Acer Aspire V5-591G started having a horizontal line of gray pixels appearing near the top of the screen last Wednesday, at where the address bar of my internet browser is in the gif. A second line then appeared next to it, and sometimes a third one flashes in as well.On Friday, the part of the screen below the lines (so, like, 95% of the screen basically) started ghosting like you see in the gif. Afterimages whenever I scroll down, or whenever I move the mouse cursor, or whenever there's an animation playing, basically any action happening onscreen. Screen also periodically has a purple tinge slowly fade in, which then disappears after half a minute to reset before the next cycle of fading in. Ruins my eyes to use the laptop now.If it matters, I mainly use the laptop at my desk and rarely move it around. And I don't have a screensaver, if you're suspecting something like a burn-in. The behavior is already present right at boot even before starting Win10. Tried to investigate by connecting to an external monitor, then a television set. Displayed fine on both. Also, my laptop has the feature of having dual graphics cards (Intel HD Graphics 530 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M), so went to device manager, disabled one while enabling the other, problem persists. Switch to disabling the other graphics card, still no dice. Partly opened the case to wiggle cable out from screen and reseat it multiple times, didn't seem to help. What o... Read more

I've a Dell inspiron 15r se laptop which is 1.1years old( model - 7520). It was working fine until last couple of days. Last week it started giving a horizontal white dot line on the very top of screen( like this ............. in white) for the entire width of the screen. From yesterday or so a similar line started appearing at the bottom too. Both of these line will come and go every 2 or 3 sec. And screen will jump a bit (like say 5 pixel or so roughly) and it will also shake sometimes which makes letters difficult to read.
The problem exists everywhere, even in boot screen. In short when I press power button and screen start displaying something problem also starts.
Today I connected an external lcd monitor via vga cable and it works fine. No line and no flickering. So I guess GPU is ok?? What could be the problem?? Could it be just loose contact or something in laptop screen cable?
Another question: I had warranty including accidental damage protection and stuff for a year. But since I'm outside this period now, what should I do?
And since I'm outside the warranty period anyway is it okay if I open my laptop and try something?
Please help!!

When I close my laptop lid to put the computer to sleep and reopen, when the screen awakens, it flashes white where the curser appears as a .5 inch by .5inch white box, and the rest of the screen appears white with vertical lines. This will happen anytime the computer falls asleep; however, the computer works fine if I do a hard shutdown and reboot (using the power button) and the laptop continues to work fine as long as it never falls asleep. I have reset the computer twice to no avail. Any thoughts?

Recently my Dell XPS laptop on boot up or waking from hibernation has a few horizontal lines scrolling upwards; sometimes it has a gray screen with lots of horizontal lines on it. If I move the laptop lid back and forth the screen is fine.
I have run Dell diagnostics and all is reported as OK. I have taken the back off and all seems OK. I assume there is a connector between screen and computer but I cannot locate that. I assume that if a display setting has changed, the screen would be constantly poor?
Any ideas?

Random Blue Thin/Dotted Lines on My HP Laptop Screen

I was recently transfering files to my new laptop, and uninstalling programs on my old laptop when I suddenly got thin blue lines randomly on my old screen in dark or black areas (see images). It is not in the same location on the screen depending on what I am viewing.

I hooked an external monitor to my laptop and the image is perfect. Another odd thing is when I screen capture the bluelines and view the image file on another PC, they do not show.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

When I jump to other excel file and back, then lines are there. Same kind of problem is also with one browser based system, it is document handling system, and when I move mouse over headlines and file names, those lines will go over each other and get stuck. When I jump to some other program and then back to the web page, everything is ok. Same thing is with external screen. Mother board has been changed. Any hints?

Hello,I have a 2 year old Lenovo G550 laptop, system model 20023 ( Dual-Core CPU T4300 2,10Ghz, 3,00GB RAM) running 32-bit Win 7 Home Premium OS with graphic card Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family.Month ago, I started getting 2 vertical lines on my screen, which change colors and tend to disappear when I tilt it. Recently, problem graduated to red, blue, yellow specks all over the screen. Tilting no longer works, but I noticed a definite relationship with the degree of pressure on the case. When I push hard enough on the left spot below the case (where hard disk is located), the problem resolves completely. I also tried plugging another monitor in and there seems to be no problem either. Please, help.

Hi all,
I need a bit of help, as I'm slowly losing my mind over the following problem. I run Xubuntu Linux on a HP Elitebook 8460p. Some two weeks ago, the entire left 3 cm margin of my screen started to display black/green/yellow/blue lines, which seemed to move constantly. Wiggling the screen and pressing here and there solve the problem temporarily, but only temporarily. Furthermore, the next 3 cm seem to be following suit. I ordered a replacement screen from a company here in The Netherlands and got to work. After replacing the screen, and a fresh startup, the screen displays a yellowish sheen, plus that it seems like every second vertical line in the display is "greyed out", making the screen fuzzy and hard to focus on. I thought something was wrong with the replacement screen and send it back, requesting another. The next screen had the same, but with a reddish sheen. The next new replacement (the third by now) had a blue-ish sheen. All three replacements had the vertical line problem. Placing my old, defect screen back shows a good image, that is, all vertical lines work properly. Another odd detail is that both in the second and third replacement screen, there can be seen a collection of static pixels (dark-red coloured) in the lower left corner in the configuration of a capital "C", in mirror image. Does anyone have the faintest idea what is going on here ? All help is greatly appreciated, many thanks !

Answer:Thin vertical grey lines make laptop screen fuzzy

sounds like you had a bad connection or ribbon cable between motherboard and screen is failing.

6 inch thick white lines down my laptop screen. 2 of them are solid white the others are fairly transparent but very noticeable, spaced out across the whole screen. The laptop itself works perfectly and the lines have been there a long time. There was only 1 to start with but its gotten worse over time. I am using an external monitor and play games a fair amount without any problems. I am wondering is this a screen or inverter issue or will i need a new motherboard for my laptop for a new graphics chip?

Answer:6 inch thick white lines down my screen but laptop works fine?

If you know about how to open inside the laptop, first check out the connection cable is seated properly between screen and mobo. But mostly times, you have to replace screen. There is no problem on Motherboard and screen inverter.

I'm trying to determine the likely cause of a (minor, for now) laptop display problem that has recently started on my Compaq Presario M2000 notebook running Win XP SP2.

A few weeks ago a single, vertical (extending the entire height of visible screen), blue-green, one-pixel-wide line appeared on my 3 year old (out of warranty) laptop. It is about 3 inches from the left edge of the screen.

Doing a 'print screen' screenshot does NOT capture the line in the image.

It went away once briefly, but has been there at all times since and seems like it is now a permanent fixture across my screen.

Do you think the cause of the problem is the **LCD screen** beginning to fail?
Or is there a way to troubleshoot my **graphics drivers/cards** to see if they are the culprit?

A second line about 1/8 inch away has now appeared.
Is this growing problem an indication that my display will completely die soon, or is this problem not a precursor to anything more serious and I should not be concerned if I can liv with the tiny lines?

Thanks for any advice you have on this.

Answer:Laptop screen has developed two, vertical, blue/green, one-pixel-wide lines

The fact that a printscreen did not capture the line would indicate to me that it's a hardware problem.
Is the graphics card driver up to date?
I am guessing here, but could the battery on this machine be failing?

OK here's what happened.
Someone was trying to add a video card to a Gateway GT5228 PC so that they could use two monitors.
The PC and existing monitor was using the on board video.
They installed a new video card and loaded drivers for it.
The on board video showed up in device manager and was deleted.
Somehow the new video card was also deleted in the device manager as well.
Now the PC will boot and you will see video until the windows splash screen then the monitor will go blank.
The PC is running as someone suggested using MS Narrator to hear the menus and try to get to device manager.
However he was unable to navigate to the device manager using this technique.
Using F8 and trying to boot into safe mode resulted in the same issues.
Trying forced VGA also the same.
Trying to use system restore to roll back to the previous setup also resulted in the same outcome.
Can anybody suggest a good way to be able to get the video back up and running?
I personally have not looked at this PC to try a few things but will be looking at it tonight.
Anyone else run into this problem?
I would think windows would not allow all video to be deleted from device manager but I guess it has happened to many folks before.
The OS is XP Pro.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Deleted Video card in device manager now no video past splash screen

take out the new card and reboot. restart (whatever happens) and go into BIOS, check your onboard graphics is enabled, save and reboot. ...you were still using the onboard graphics by he way...tell me when you've done the above..

Just out of warranty(of course). Recently i noticed these moving bubbles(circles) that are gray and white translucent popping up on the left side of the screen and when they do mouse take on a life of its own and windows start opening and closing and all hec breaks loose like the laptop is possessed. then just as quickly it sometimes stops on its own- other times if i move the screen a bit forward or backward it stops.Other times thicker vertical bars show up along with the circular bubbles and again the laptop freaks out and windows open and close and shrink and enlarge without me even touching the mouse pad. All drivers are up to date-even bios and all win10 updates are fine as well. No new software added at the time or since the issue. It happens sometimes and not always. If i move the screen all the way back and put pressure on it the black likes will show up.Not always but sometimes. My feeling is this has something to do with the cable that connects the screen to the main part of the laptop but i just dont know how to get to it to maybe seat it better if it is the issue...if anyone has any ideas please do let me know.Thank you
