How to test Hardware / Complete Server HA ?

Question: How to test Hardware / Complete Server HA ?

Hello there folks,

i recently bought myself a little server. Now i want to test it for high availability and endurance. What tool can be recommended? I normally use the linux tool stress, but this only gives me evidence for short time usage.
I would also like a tool which is os independent and that tests all installed components.

Does anybody know what Dell or HP uses for stability and high availability tests?

All information is very appreciated! Even if the solution is non-free!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have been experiencing some difficulty with my Z560 for a few weeks now. It freezes, is slow, shuts down, and is sometimes not responsive to any keystroks. Does not respond to CTL ALT DEL to start task manager , requirig me to shut it down manually. This has been going on for about a month now. I have doe the hardware scan test a few times and today the computer failed the SMART short self test as well as the SMART drive self test. My research tells me that this is a warning that the hard drive is failing. The Lenovo Hardware test site tells me to contact Lenovo with the following result code: WHD01V01G-7H9W8J. Where do I send this code? Is this, indeed, a message that my hard drive is beginning to fail ? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Answer:SMART short-self test and SMART drive self test show a failure during Hardware scan test

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

The result of SMART short self test and SMART drive self test suggest that the hard drive has failed. First thing to do is back up all your data while the hard drive can still be accessed. Also contact the Lenovo technical support and they will guide you further.

I ran the hardware test this morning and everything passed but the SMART short self test. It failed and gave me this code. WHD01V00G-BK7W0J It says to send to Lenovo but I don't know where. I also can't add my laptop to my products on my account. I keep getting a message #WL Service Busy #   What do I do?

Answer:Hardware test shows SMART short self test failure.

hi Smurfette,

Welcome to the Forums.

The image below is the breakdown on how the LSC error codes mean.
  - Link to picture

The SMART short self-test that failed may have detected some certain sectors on the drive that are bad and predicted an imminent HDD failure so I would recommend you contact the lenovo helpdesk and report your findings as you likely need to send the unit for service.

Am I alone in having this problem. Each time AVG Free runs its complete test my PC slows down considerably to the point of being a real pest when I'm trying to work. My PC is a one year old Mesh with a 64 bit dual-core Athlon 4200 processor and 2 Gb RAM. Surely that should hardly flinch when carrying out such a task instead of slowing to a comparative crawl for the 55 minutes it takes to complete?

Answer:AVG Complete Test seriously slows PC

Just sit back and let it happen or cancel it and re-run at a more convenient time for you - when you are at lunch say.

Don't know if the two are related but a couple of days ago parents' computer started having a really weird problem where it would not go past "preparing network connections" not in normal, safe or any other mode. This has been fixed...maybe...I think. Not having this problem anymore, compy is logging in no problem by the time I was back from work.

Logged into my dad's account. Computer is always running something. I checked the tasks and I see about 4-6 test.exe processes.

Did some quick work and now I'd just like to check to see if I'm in the clear.

I'm having a very very bad problem with my pc. last week I gave my hp patched brio a600 a new cpu upgrade up to 850mhz p3. for about 4 days that week it was quite stable, my starlogic 400watt power supply had began makin very faint fan motors noises but would then stop after 2 minutes and would began every hour..... this week my pc be booted up fine and after every 4 hours it would restart itself at first I thought it was the 2 HDD but than I checked the HDD error log in xp and it said there weren't any major or bad sectors however though it had pointed to 2 problems the system with this icon (!) and then the cpu with this icon (?). I know my system can handle the cpu fine, if it didn't it would be rejected from the bios immediately. however the power supply had gotten worser each day where it would gently knock on my new gateway case a little bit. about 45 minutes ago my cockerspaniel began barking and screaming because the system was rebooting nonstop and beeping at the blue screen of death and repeating (he gets scared when I'm not there at my pc working on it and no one to fix it). I shut down the pc and mobo was barely even hot and there weren't any signs of hardware malfunctioning..... luckily I had my 7 year old 300 watt gateway power supply installed and now xp starts up normally like it did 3 weeks ago. is there a stress test I can do on my system meant for P3 systems and without harming it ? I need to know now if the system hates the cpu or the 400 watt power supply... Read more

I just replaced my original 40 GB HDD with a 120GB Fujitsu MHV2120AH  (thus avoiding "Error 2010") installed Vista (updated to SP1), installed all IBM/Lenovo drivers, software and updates and machine seems to be running fine. Then purchased a new battery: after installing the new battery my machine will freeze when booting, I can log on but as soon as I move the mouse, after the desktop appears, the screen freezes (both mouse and keyboard fail to respond). This occurs when booting via battery only and AC+battery. (but not AC only or with my old, but still serviceable, battery, or AC+old battery). I discontinued use of the new battery and ran PC Doctor 5. Everything was fine except the HDD test. It begins to run the test but when it gets to the "SMART Short Test" (SST) it completes 19% then goes no further? The screen says it will  take approx. 2 minutes to complete but after 10 or 15 minutes with the SST still reading 19% complete I resort to closing PC Doctor. After numerous attempts I did get it to finish the HDD test a couple times and it "passes" but more often than not the SST will hang at 19% complete. I reinstalled my old 40GB drive and it zips through the SST. I put the 120GB in an external case and tested it with PC Doctor and it passes every time but when testing an external USB drive it doesn't run the SST. Does the uncomplete SST signify anything? Or should I only worry if it... Read more

After Googling for freeware to backup a BluRay dvd, the web site I went to nailed me. I started getting the following message in multiple message boxes:

"A write command during the test has failed to complete. This may be due to a memory reference to an invalid system memory address. It is highly recommended to run a complete hard drive scan to prevent loss of personal files."

I recognized this type of message format as some kind of virus/malware and disconnected from the web site. When I rebooted my PC, all of my DeskTop icons were gone, there were no entries under the Start->All Programs Menu and the above message boxes began to again display. Then the PC automatically rebooted.

I also get a popup in the system tray that I need to activate Windows because a lot of my hardware has changed since last activation. It has been activated for years and it is current on my Authentication/Genuine Advantage. There have been NO hardware changes made in years, so I know that this is a bogus (virus) msg.

Since my PC was unstable in normal mode, I rebooted into safe mode. After launching Explorer (from Start->Run), I found that all of my directories and files were flagged as Hidden. So I used the DOS command Attrib *.* -H /s/d to unhide everything. So now I had all of my icons back. No files were apparently deleted. I then reviewed the Windows registry and found the SOB program listed in the RUN key:

My computer has been acting up a ton over the past few months and I have no clue what to do. Most recently it has not been booting quickly (windows will show it's loading, then black screen for 5ish minutes, then I can hear it loading and the login screen pops up shortly thereafter). It will also freeze for no apparent reason even when running only one or two very light programs. Also, just today I clicked a shortcut to one of my media drives, and discovered that the drive had been completely erased (and the partition deleted)! Thinking back, I now remember that I could not access those files yesterday even though I could view them in the folder (media player said they could not be found).
I recently reformatted my computer (several times actually) so it can't be a software issue.

So what is going on here? Is my drive failing? Please help!

PS So i just remember this all began happening after my computer spent a summer in the trunk of a car...could the heat have messed with it (even though cpu temps are pretty hot normally)

Answer:Help! Complete hardware failure

Lets first check the hard drive.

Go
My Computer>Right click on C Drive>Properties>Tools>Error Checking>Check now>Place check boxes in both options>Start.

Then restart so it can do the scan.

Report what happens.

I have two pcs at home an old one and a really old one. My old one has packed in, as in the power button has gone. I want to transfer the enitre guts of it ie hardrive processors the works and replace the stuff in my really old pc.

Can this be done?

Kind Regards
Craig

Answer:Complete hardware transfer

Do you mean just transfer the components of one computer to the case of the old one? This can be done fairly easily, as long as the second case is as least the size of the original one.

My brother told me about a program that will go through my 4 hard drives and erase all of the non-microsoft programs, ultimately thoroughly cleaning out my computer like a reformat.

I have a 2001 Dell server with 4 scsi hard drives and I honestly don't know how to reformat anything passed the "C" drive.. If there is such a program, please let me know about it or if there's another way, I.E. a full walkthrough... that would be much appreciated!!! thanks!

Answer:Complete Hardware erase (Help, plz)

don't mess with stuff like that, you can just open My Computer and right click the drive letter and choose format, but you might have to be in Safe mode if there are programs installed that may be running.

* or Right click "My computer" and choose manage... then under "Storage" >Disk management...right click the drive letter and choose format.

* Be sure to use NTFS file structure.

It is more complicated when you format the C drive ( where operating system is installed).

Question: Lol Hardware Test

For all the boasts of Intel and other MB manufacturers of improving motherboard graphics options, it would seem that my fear of motherboard graphics and my belief that they ARE 100% horrible can be verified easily. I found a super low price on a new HD 4550 graphics card that Passmarks at around 250 and dropped it in an i5 2400 (Passmarks about 6000) PC to see what the Windows experience index would say in Windows 7. The standard graphics for this machine are Intel's illustrious Intel 2000 graphics, and they are basically awful. Anyway, after refreshing the index, sure enough 512 MB of AMD 4550 did push the index up, from 4.6 to 5.0.

I actually expected the index to fall some, considering the best cards today are benching at 10,000+. All said, this is the 100% proof I needed that standard graphics options have never made the grade, I knew of the gajillion claims of its abysmalness, but I have a card in all 5 of the PCs here (haven't run a PC without one since 2009), so this test helped me to realize how much so they are unacceptably poor. As far as I am concerned that applies even to simple office use. Anyone using MB graphics, get yourself any sort of PCI-e option with 512 K or up. I paid $8.00 delivered for the 4550, so no excuses...

I have started searching around for the correct docs on how to do this but haven't had much luck finding one that addresses what I'm trying to do.

I have an existing Windows 2000 server and am going to replace it with a server running Windows 2003 Server R2.

I would like to know the best way of doing that. Most of the docs I have seem talk about it as though you're keeping the same server hardware in place. That's not what I'm trying to do.

So, you don't have to go through all the steps I need to do. If you could just point me to the correct doc and give some helpful hints I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Hey guys,

Alright, in the last few months, I have been having a lot of trouble with my computer. First, my CPU fried, and 3 days after I got that back from warranty, I lost my graphic card. I replaced the mobo and the power supply, so about half of my hardware is new within the last 3 months.

Anyway, since I have put it all back together, I have gotten 5 completel lockup/freezes. This has been since last Wednesday. It seems like it would be a video card problem, but I wouldn't think so (I got a brand new 9800 pro last week). I am doubtful my motherboard is acting up already, as well as the CPU and PS should be working fine....

To further explain my problem, I finally connected to the Vanguard Beta Server, and it just stuck to one frame, stopped the music, but kept the image on my screen. All the fans inside my case were still running.

My rig consists of...
Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb
AMD XP 3200+ CPU (400mhz)
1gig PC3200 DDR400 ram
80GB 2mb HD
Asus A7V800-X mobo

I have come to the conclusion that either one peice of my hardware is conflicting with another, its a HD issue, its a monitor issue, or it is still my new video card...

Thanks in advance

I have reinstalled Windows XP on my Dell Dimension 8000. I got XP installed ok but then need to connect to the internet to update/download all the software I need. Network Setup Wizard cannot find any network hardware.

All I need to do is connect the PC to my home network (wired). This all worked before, I just can't figure out how to get the computer to recognise the modem?

In Device Manager there is no modem listed. Shouldn't there be one? Is it drivers? I put the Dell drivers disk in which didn't seem to do anything.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hello there.
Let me start by telling you, that I've had my computer for 2? years now, and I've had this problem all the time. During games or graphics-requiring applications my computer randomly goes BSOD - it happens very randomly.

I've been trouble-shooting a lot, but I never got to a software solution, so I ended up replacing every single piece of hardware in my computer. I've replaced my CPU, motherboard, PSU, graphics card, harddrive, CPU-cooler and RAM and I'm still getting the BSODs!

My setup at the moment is:
ASRock 775Dual-VSTA
Core 2 Duo E6300 1,86 GHz
Asus Geforce GT7600
Kingston Valueram PC5300-CL5 667 MHz (2*1gb)
Antec Smartpower 2.0 500W
Western Digital 80gb 7200 rpm
Zalman CNPS-9500 CPU-cooler

So after replacing the last part, the RAM, today, I got more BSODs. I decided to try and reformat my computer and make 100% sure everything was installed correctly and with it's latest version. I downloaded the audio drivers, graphic drivers and motherboard drivers. I also made sure to use other anti-virus and firewall software than I used before. But what happened.. I got a crash again! I'm really getting sick of this, as I can't seem to find a solution.

I've only recently learned to read my own minidump files, and my latest 5 minidumps include the following errors:

KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (0x1000008e)

Answer:Still having BSODs after complete hardware replacement..

Hi,

There are two things you need to do.

First, uninstall your current 7600GT driver in device manager and download this driver here:
http://www.nvidia.com/content/licens...glish_whql.exe

Be sure to install it in safe mode. Press F8 right after the computer finishes POSTing. Then select Safe Mode.

Then, reboot normally, and uninstall your Realtek HD audio driver in device manager. After that, (do not reboot) install this driver:
ftp://download.asrock.com/drivers/VI..._2K(R1.41).zip

That should fix the BSODs.

I have recently installed xp after my system crashed. I found one of RAM cards to be faulty. I reinstalled XP but have my system restarts every so often, more so when I am installing applications but sometimes just randomly.

Is there anything I can do to test motherboard/processor - I have ran a RAM test and it had no problems for the remaining memory card

However, I noticed that if I were to put the RAM into one of the other two slots - the computer will not start up at all.

I'm pretty sure this is hardware related - because of new xp install, but any suggestions to confirm?
cheers

I need a program that can run through some high tests on all the hardware.

I have a client with a web server running Windows 2000 Professional. They also have a server on the network running NT 4. They have been told that there is a device that will route requests to the NT server if the 2000 server is down that costs about $100. I have not heard of such an animal, and if anybody can shed some light on this I'd really appreciate it. The device should somehow, I suppose, automatically detect that the machine at IP address A is not responding, and route the web request to IP address B. Anybody?
Thanks,

Hi there. I was surfing the internet and suddenly about 30 windows popped up saying "System message - Write fault error. A write command during the test has failed to complete". Another window came up saying "System error. Hard disk failure detected. It's highly recommended to run complete HDD scan to prevent loss of personal files." The buttons given were "Scan and repair" and "Cancel and restart" I did not press either and have come here seeking help. Please advise as to what steps I can take. Thanks a million in advance

Answer:Windows xp "a write command during the test has failed to complete"Missing Start Menu/Desktop Display Icons

1) Boot your PC into safe mode.
2) Delete c:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\temp\SoftwareUpdates.exe (do not double click/run it!)
3) Delete any suspect programs as c:\ProgramData\xxx.exe, i.e. rmIhrYfwFjUdy.exe or QFUDzzwTiL1aQy.exe. They had weird names, were launched from ProgramData, had no Description or CompanyName.
4) Empty the recycle bin.
5) Restart PC.
Think it will help you fix the problem.

I ran Lenovo Solutions latest hardware test on my T530.  All was fine except the Nvidia test resulted in a warning on the "Stress Test" with an result code of WVC00V000-UJ8DWG. System is a T530 running w7 64 Home Premium on an i7-3520M cpu, and has an NVidia NVS 5400M (Optimus) graphics chip in addition to normal Intel 4000 chip.  It is attached to a Series 3 Plus dock (pre USB 3.0), running an older Dell LCD monitor using MS driver for "Generic PnP Monitor" via DVI from the dock.  Apparently the Optimus design requires monitors served through the dock to be driven by NVidia.  The native laptop screen (1600x900) is driven by the Intel 4000. What does the result code mean?  Is there anything wrong with my system? Secondarily, where can one look up the meaning of the result codes?  It seems crazy to have to bother everybody on the forum just to find out what your diagnostic program is trying to tell you... Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Hello,
Is there an easy inexpensive way to test your hardware (i.e. sound card, video card, usb, memory cards, etc) to see if they are still working without the motherboard? I need a new motherboard as my old one is broken, and I tried to get a new motherboard for my Dell XPS T500, but it didn't work with my system. I would like to sell the old parts as some of the parts are pretty new. I do not need the pc any more, but I need to make sure they are still in good working condition if I am to sell them. If not, how do you find a motherboard that will fit with your system (I'd rather not go through Dell, because I will get gouged if I buy from them)? I found one that I thought would be perfect, it was from the same company and had the same numbers as my motherboard (Intel 440BX) but didn't fit. I think it had 2 slots for 2 monitors, which my motherboard does not have. Can any one help me?
Thank you!

Hello, I'm trying to repair a Dell L433c desktop on which the hard drive broke. After installing a new HD and reinstalling Win98 OS, the sound no longer functions. I have installed the latest drivers for the integrated sound hardware (Sound Blaster Ensoniq AudioPCI, model# ES1373).

In addition to the sound not working, the device also does not show up in the device manager. I've also run Belarc Advisor and it does not show up there either. Under Multimedia Properties in the Control Panel, the audio devices under the Devices tab says there is no such device installed. I have also verified that the integrated sound is set to enabled in cmos.

I'm beginning to suspect that the sound hardware might be broken and would like to know if there is a way to test this. If anyone can help me out with this or has any ideas of solutions I have overlooked, I would greatly appreciate hearing about it. Also, I no longer have the system restoration disk from Dell, and Dell tech support was less than helpful, let alone friendly. Thanks for any responses.

My boss asked me to recommend software to be used for stress testing the hardware in a PC for stability, and reporting errors if found. It needs to run under Windows XP Pro. needs to be a single utility, or can be more than one if they will run concurrently. It needs to be able to run for hours until stopped manually. Finally, it needs to be paid or open source software that has no license restrictions for use on commercial business computers. Price is not a consideration.

Google hasn't been much help, as most of the products I see are tuneup, tweak, repair, anti-malware, optimize or clean up utilities, list exhaustive details of the hardware in the computer, or include hardware for troubleshooting boot issues. These are NOT what I am looking for. I gave Passmark Burn-In software a look, but unsure if it is what I am looking for. Recommendations for software that you have personally used will be appreciated.

Hi,
Barely computer literate, so please be gentle.
Not even sure if this is the correct forum, so mods please excuse and feel free to move to the proper one.

ISSUE:
Just experienced a "black screen"/blank screen display for 3rd time since purchasing this system ~2 months ago.
1st time:~ 4 weeks ago MS Office 2007 SP2 (legal, patched) was open and there was an open document. Stepped away for ~45 min and returned to a black display. Had to hard boot from reset button on tower.
2nd time: 10 days ago, system idle (not even browser was open), except for OEM McAfee Security Center and email client running in background.
3rd time: 1 hour ago, system idle.
Each time this happens, there is no cursor or mouse - just a black display.
Have to hard boot from the power button on the tower each time.
No problem rebooting.

W7 is OEM. No new recent hardware or software. Everything is fully patched. BIOS is current and drivers are the most current offered by the computer maker (though there is a newer video card driver at the ATI site, it has not been tested/made available by Dell). I practice scrupulous computer "hygiene" and the system is not infected. I do not game or use P2P.

My "custom" power plan (designed to keep USB power to my UPS & allow scheduled tasks, such as AV scans to run) is: screensaver on after 10 min, display off after 30 min, computer sleep = never.

I know how to open the W7 events viewer, but have no idea how to interpret what I fin... Read more

I have a computer that is clearly slowing down. I've done everything possible from a software perspective (except put Linux on it, but family members are afraid of it.). I am almost certain that some piece of hardware has been put under so much stress that it is breaking down. How can I go about testing individual hardware components (Things like memtest would be preferable).

The computer has been on nearly 24/7 for I think a couple of years now. On occasion there will be a Windows update and I have to restart it. Such occasions are pretty much the only times it gets to rest.

Answer:How to test individule hardware components?

What are the specs of the system in question - cpu, memory, hard drive, video. And over what period of time has this been noticable?

"clearly slowing down" is not a usual hardware issue other than cooling or exceeded capacity. Quite often it relates to running processes - desired and/or unwanted. Every time there is a new version or update of software it usually comes at a resource price, for example while you could run XP acceptably on 256mb of ram when it first came out (and still can on very basic optimised software) it is nearer 1gb required nowadays with all the associated multitasking expectations of many consumers. Then there is of course malware

Hi,
I'm having problems running Microsofts Sound Hardware Test Wizard.
Every time I've tried running it the progress bar goes to the end and then I get this error:

"An error occured during DirectPlay Voice Setup. The error code is 0x80004005.)

Then this message:

"Windows cannot execute DpvSetup.exe, use Add/Remove Programs control panel to install."

I've tried running the test from different areas of windows:
- Sounds and Autio Devices Properties
- MSN Audio Tuning Wizard
- SideWinder Game Voice
- DirectX Diagnostics

I have the same results no matter where I run the wizard.

Here are my computer specs:
- Windows Xp(everything is updated)
- AMD Tbird 1200
- Abit KT7E motherboard
- 512 megs of SDRAM(PC133)
- ATI Raedon 9500 Pro 128 meg video card
- Directx 9
- Herculies Gamesurround Fortissimo 7.1 soundcard with updated Drivers
- Still have around 5 gigs of my 20 gig Hard Drive free

I use to have a SoundBlaster Live Value before and I never used to get this problem.

It's troubling because I've just purchased a Microsoft Game Voice and it requires you to run this wizard before you can use it.

I've tried all sorts of fixes from the Microsoft site like:
- Going into the registry and manually setting Fullduplex=3, Halfduplex=3, mic????=2.
- moving the sound hardware acceleration sliders to standard acceleration, max acceleration, and basic acceleration
- Reinstalling Directx 9
- Reinstalling my sound card drivers

Hey gang, my boss has asked me as part of my new job description to perform hardware compatibility tests. This involves PC based hardware, printers, scanners, keyboards, etc. I was wondering if any of you have ever done compatibility testing before as I'm not sure where to start.

Basically I'm aware of M$ HCT and our budget allows me to purchase 5 of the most popular peripheral devices from all catagories (5 best printers, 5 best mice, etc). Any tips, pointers or suggestions?

Cheers

Answer:How to set up a hardware compatibility test environment

the very first thing YOU do is go back to Mr Boss and ask for an objective set
of criteria to be measured. He will likely ask you to fill-in the details of HOW;
he/she may also punt entirely back to you -- "that's your job". Either way,
create a document of your understanding, containing

objectives
assumptions
a list of specific criteria
an overview of HOW each criterion will be evaluated

and publish this to Mr Boss and anyone working with you.

Yea, it will take a few days to get your head around the subject, but it will also
avoid a false start and maybe Mr Boss will provide extra inputs you have overlooked (a good thing).

I am using XP Home with SP3 on Acer Laptop Travelmate 244LMFor 5 years my P.C. always started the day with 98+% full charge after a night powered down. Two weeks ago it started the day at 0% and gradually built up 1% point at a time for a couple of hours.Every night I instruct a normal SHUTDOWN, and after everything has completed, and the LED's go out and the fan stops and the display blanks out, then I shut off the mains power to the battery charger.I suspect as possible culprits :-1.  Something woke up the computer and it stayed awake until it exhausted the battery, or2.  The shutdown software correctly turned off MOST of the hardware, but perhaps the USB ports kept alive external peripherals etc.I find that XP Home has stupidly configured the LAN ETHERNET interface so my computer belongs to the world, i.e. Realtek LAN has enabled :-Wake-On-LAN after Shutdown, andWakeUp on ARP/PINGI am happy to disable these two options just in case. Please advise me, are there any other places in the operating system and or BIOS that also merit adjustment ?If it is a known issue for the Acer to leave some equipment alive and discharging the battery I guess the only cure is to update the BIOS, but that cure is likely to be worse than the disease - ACER SUPPORT is useless.Their main U.S. branch refuse to help because they cannot validate my U.K. serial number. My local (U.K.) branch go no further than allocating a case reference number.RegardsAlan

what about burn test software

Answer:what is best software to physicaly test all hardware for errors

Im not sure what you are looking for. Are you looking for a benchmarking program or are you looking for a maintenance software. Or do you have any problems where it might cause BSODs and you want to see what component is failing. As you might have guessed there is no simple answer to this question no matter how you look at it. But in order to be able to answer your question of need i first need to know what you are looking for exactly.

Sounds to me like you actually want a software that somehow scans your hardware for problems. To be honest there are no programs out there that straight of the bat does that for you and are actually accurate. If i remember right that doctor program you are talking about only checks your hdd for sector errors.

Hi,

My motherboard recently died and since most components of my pc were already five and a half years old, I decided to transfer my HDD, PSU, RAM and DVD RW to a new case, and install a new motherboard, CPU, graphics card and some more (identical) RAM.

I discovered this forum while browsing for a solution to access my old win 7 so I could update my drivers and get my motherboard to recognize my HDD's partitions correctly, and used Kaktussoft tutorial on Paragon Adaptive Restore to get past that problem.

(Thank you very much Kaktussoft.)

Getting rid of old drivers and installing the new ones was easy enough. Then, I thoroughly installed every important windows update that was checked. They gave me a bit more trouble as one or two installations failed, but I simply installed less updates at the same time and that seemed to do the trick.

Unfortunately, I still have a far more unpleasant problem : during Windows experience index tests and when I try to play games, the computer suddenly reboot (no BSOD before reboot, the fiability monitor only logs an unexpected stop from windows and the computer runs fine when he's not asked anything strenuous).

I managed to pass the WEI test after several try. As my case was open at the time, I first suspected high temperature on my CPU to be an issue. I checked it with HWMonitor, and it reported alarmingly high temperatures, but I quickly discovered that apparently it was only misinterpreting my AMD CPU thermal ma... Read more

Hello

Am running on a Gateway with Windows 98SE. Picked up a Kodak digital camera with docking bay. Use Kodak Picture software for transferring from camera to the PC. Had been working fine until...

I disconnected the docking bay from my PC, (USB port) as I needed to use my scanner for a few days. Now, after I replace the scanner with the Kodak docking bay my pics will not transfer.

Of course now I wonder if this is a software or hardware issue. My question is: Is there a way for me to run a diagnostic that will tell me if the PC recognizes the Kodak docking bay? My thinking is that the software is not able to "see" the bay, therefore ignoring it.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

To check the operation of a microphone I started the Sound Hardware Test Wizard in the Voice tab of Sound and Audio Devices Properties.

The first time I ran it, it stopped shortly after starting it and gave an error. I forget just what it said but it mentioned dpvsetup.exe.
A Google search led me to this page http://www.smartcomputing.com/techsupport/...=&ErrorID=22221 and I carried out the registry changes it advised.

On running the Wizard again it stopped and gave this message "An error occurred during DirectPlay Voice setup. The error code is 0x80004005"

A Google for this coughed up dozens of leads and they seem to deal with totally different causes of the same error. I am therefore reluctant to try any of the advice.

Can anyone here help me please?

Answer:P PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI - test failure

The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Media to install Windows/drivers/software on the new hdd. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. Battery calibration:http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Pavilion-dv6-3200-Entertainment-Notebook-PC-series/4308480/model/5051632/document/c00821536#AbT3

Hi!
So my computer went up in smoke, a big white plume of smoke, yay. I got most parts replaced under warranty, unfortunetly the motherboard and GPU had to be replaced with newer parts. My installation of Windows 10 Pro is a free upgrade from Windows 8.1 Pro but now fails due to the hardware change. Stupid me forgot to link my license to my Microsoft account, although I dont know if that would have helped. So what are my options now? Thankful for any advice you can give me.

Answer:Activation fails efter complete hardware meltdown and replacement.

Hello
Firstly I should ask if it was OK to redirect this problem here, it was originally in Windows XP,
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-n...-sudden-complete-freeze-hang.html#post4174955
but a lot of things have been ruled out including I would guess Windows itself, as the problem is occurring with a fresh copy of windows before I have even connected to the internet.
In summary, (more rambling info in the other post) I started to get these hangs, in which the screen would freeze, even pressing ctrl-alt-delete achieved nothing, I had to force the machine off and restart. I was eventually getting several per day, sometimes several in a row as soon as my desktop was loaded, and after restarting after every hang in the system event viewer I got an error message citing a pdf writer I had downloaded for free from a site which I found offered no support. More info on that in the other post, but I have since wiped the HD clean and still get the hang.
I have blown out the dust, especially from the cpu heatsink, and in the bios setup the temp is given as 36 deg C
I have ran memtest 86 several times, no error found, and have tried removing each RAM card in turn. I got less hangs when only the 128 card was in, but I assumed that was because the whole thing was running extremely slowly
I have run the manufacturers diag for the Samsung HDD, no error found
DOS seems to work OK.
I was unable to get the manufacturers recovery program to run past the stage where it reformatted to NTFS and it... Read more

I am helping a friend try to regain his touch screen capabilities.  He seems to think that the windows 10 upgrade stopped it working.  I have run the Hardware Diagnostic Test (F2 on boot) and run the component check for touch screen.  There is no response to touching the screen.   This test is UEFI which I presume runs before any OS is loaded.  The display works fine otherwise.  Is there a way to know if this is a motherboard problem?  I can't find anything in the BIOS that relates to touch screen, and I can't get a log report for the diagnostic test because I can't start the test ... it just times out and the log says cancelled.  Is there a separate connector from display to motherboard for touch screen that may have come loose?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have a 7470 and it seems to randomly beep and occasionally hear a clicking sound on it.  Even while i'm running the hardware tests it randomly beeps.  is something wrong with this laptop?  or instance, the hard drive test is running from the boot diagnostics, and it is just randomly beeping during it, not the usual noises you get during a hardware test.  even when booted into Windows it randomly makes beeps.

Hey all,

So while the logs show this seems to have happened a few times in the past I don't recall (maybe while a roommate was on my comp) over the past week my computer has been very unreliable. I notice it most often when doing things graphic intensive (swtor, dota2, watching videos) and it hasn't happened while idle on desktop. Reinstalled video drivers, did a memtest and a HDD test, no errors found. At one point did a system restore to a recent point prior to the issue, still with no luck. I already have a new computer on order but if I can salvage this one I'd like to.

I do live right next to new arena construction and so dust is an ongoing concern. I have went to town on my rig with compressed air so I don't think it's a current issue but I can't discount it as being a potential initial cause of the issue.

Error number I managed to grab was:

0x00000124 (0x0000000000000000, 0xFFFFFA800770C028, 0x00000000B6602000, 0x0000000034000135)

This was on my most recent crash. No idea if it matches the others.

About a third of the time the system doesn't blue screen, it just flickers and begins reloading windows. I don't think those time are represented in the dump filed as it'd be quite a bit longer.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Problem: CD will not work - it spins when a cd is loaded then nothing. The drive shows up under computer. I have uninstalled the driver and asked windows to find the best driver for it - did not work. The drive tell that it is working properly but yet I cannot play pre recorded music or use it to store data. Have cleaned the unit well to make sure the laser could read the data. I have installed an external cd/dvd player and that works well.
I can replace the internal drive without too much problem but I am wondering if there is a way to determine if it really is hardware and not software.

You need to manually download and install that driver from Dell. Most of the time, windows will just use the generic OS driver for hardware and tell you it's the right one, which in fact it's not.

I recently ran the typical Hardware Scan, the one that 'Lenovo Solution Center' prompts every so often, and the storage drive came with with a "Warning" for  SMart Short Self Test. Result Code: WHD00V000-UL7W5I. Everything else passed without much issues. I have ran CrystalDiskInfo 6.7.5 x64 and there were no major problems detected -- if any at all. Health status shows "Good 100%" and temperature is sitting at 32*C. Keep in mind, the storage drive I have in now is NOT what the computer came with from stock. The original was a 500 GB mechanical HDD, which I had swapped with a 240 GB SanDisk SSD. The SSD is a brand-new drive, purchased back on "Black Friday" 2015. Of course, a fresh install was performed on the system; Windows 8.1 upgraded to Windows 10. If this may be useful, the RAM has also been upgraded, from the original 4GB (1 X 4GB) to 16 GB (2 X 8GB). The 16 GB memory kit is fully recognized by the system, and I had confirmed comptability before purchasing. The Hardware Test didn't indicate any problems with the RAM, and everything checked out perfectly fine, though. The specific memory kit: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231728&_ga=1.226694877.113148279.1456366401  More informaton about the system in questionMode: Lenovo ThinkPad T450, purchased back in October 2015CPU: Intel i5-4300URAM: 16 GB (8 GB x 2) G.Skill RipJaws, DDR3L-1600, 11-11-11-28-2T timings, 1.35VStorage: SandDisk SSD Plus 240 GB ... Okay....here goes......I have no sound on a system I've built. It has a biostar mobo with an onboard Realtek '97 for VIA Audio Controller. The OS is Windows XP SP3 with everything updated. I have installed all the proper drivers, directly from either Biostar or Realtek. Whether I use simple headphones or simple stereo (amplified) computer speakers, I have no sound. The Windows hardware test (the one where you read into the microphone and it shows both the record and playback levels shows great level in each, but I have no sound, despite what Windows says.

I've installed all Chipset drivers as well, directly from Biostar.

I've run a dxdiag and this is the error code it is showing - "DirectSound test results: Failure at step 19 (User verification of software): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)

dxdiag also noted that the the ALCXWDM.SYS is not digitally signed by WHQL (the Windows Hardware Quality Lab), but I have never had that be an issue. Many drivers are not signed.

Anybody have any idea? I've built dozens of systems over the years, repaired many more, and I have never dealt with this.

Answer:No sound... despite what Windows, dxdiag, and hardware test shows

Based on all you say, my best guess is it's a hardware issue as all the drivers/software/Windows seems to think everything is fine. (maybe the audio jacks are broken or not connecting to mobo? idk... just guesses)

I've run a dxdiag and this is the error code it is showing - "DirectSound test results: Failure at step 19 (User verification of software): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)Click to expand...

That result happens when you ran the DirectSound test and you told Dxdiag you couldn't hear anything (i.e. user verification is what failed)

dxdiag also noted that the the ALCXWDM.SYS is not digitally signed by WHQL (the Windows Hardware Quality Lab), but I have never had that be an issue. Many drivers are not signed.Click to expand...

Agree, that's not the issue

The Windows hardware test (the one where you read into the microphone and it shows both the record and playback levels shows great level in each, but I have no sound, despite what Windows says.Click to expand...

As far as windows is concerned, it thinks your sound is fine (again, makes me think is purely hardware is my guess)

/* EDIT */
One other thought (tho don't know if applies) but under Ctl Panel->Sound, i think under Audio tab(?), check that the default playback device is set correctly (in case it lists more then one playback device)

I am often frustrated with computers so I took a hardware/software course where we learn to add new components and learn how they work. Well I find the teaching style used by the teacher doesn't work for me. I am looking for simple easy to understand definitions of how to tell me what port is what on any computer. I want to know how to tell a printer port from a serial port from a parallel port and so on. I am pretty sure I know a few of these ports but need help with some. Also I also need to know how to tell motherboard components from each other. I have a website from the course that has a diagram of each component or port that I need to know. Can anyone help me to learn how to identify them or at least just identify them so I can learn this stuff?
The website is...

http://www.nmos.net/030/

Once there, you just look at the list on the right hand side and go to "What is this?" and there are pics of all the components. I think I know many but there are many I'm not sure about or have no idea about. Can anyone help me please. I have a test on this on Wednesday the 26th so any speedy help is greatly appreciated.

Greetings all.

One of my clients has a server running Windows 2003 Small Business Server with Exchange Server 2003 on it. They have had some good will come their way in the form of a server that has the exact same specs as the one they have now, which, is pretty good for a small to midsize company (approx 25 users across 6 sites). What they would like to do is increase their fault tolerance by using the second server as a copy of the first one preferably including data and possibly synchronizing using DSL at 3 Mbps through a VPN. Can anyone recommend a method of getting this done? Should it be done? Why would you or wouldn't you do this? Anyone have any examples of something similar?
Thanks

Question: Server test?

I asked for advice a while back on building a server for the first time and all went well and its up and running.

Some guys installed the software for the golf course on the server that processed transactions and reservations and they said that thought the server was a little sluggish and not responding very quickly. They looked over the components and said it was a good choice of parts but thought that in thier experiences it should be running faster?

Perhaps there are too many variables involved here for a good answer? Is there a way through software tests or other means to locate possible bottlenecks that could be slowing things down? I never ran a server before so I don't have a clue.

Here are the specs:
super micro sc733t case with sata backplane
asus nrl-ls533
p4 2.4
1 gig ram
4 - MAXTOR 80GB SATA 150 8MB BUFFER
adaptec raid controller
setup raid 5, created a small partition for the os and installed everything else in remaining large partition. I setup raid with adaptec config utility but see you can also configure raid within server 2000 however I did nothing to the raid setup after installing win2k

Installed server 2000 standard.

Thanks,

Hey guys,

In the summer of 2009 I bought my new self-assembled PC.
The RAM and CPU checked out on the ASUS P5Q Qualified Vendor List and I bought an MSI ATI Radeon HD4850 to go with it.
As an OS, I installed Vista Home Premium (SP1) 64-bit.

From day one I've been getting MEMORY_MANAGEMENT BSODs when trying to install .msi files, when launching some java apps on the web, when doing stuff in the startup tab of msconfig, etc.

After 2 reinstalls of my OS, the problems kept recurring.

Now I've been ignoring the random BSODs for a year, crossing my fingers whenever I had to install a .msi file, java app, etc. since I neededmy PC.

90 days ago, I finally had time to ship back my PC to have it checked.
They gave me a new motherboard (also P5Q), tested my PSU, RAM, HDD, GFX card with both replacement parts -and- software testers when available.

Nothing came up as defect.

Now the only thing that remains is either drivers, or a combination of Vista-HD4850-64bit-4GB RAM not working.

I tried to run your batch file to analyze my pc, but it stopped about a minute or two after the licence popup showed up, also going to the BSOD I mentioned before.

I can attach the (non-complete) folder and the html file you guys ask for, though.

More information:
I found a way to reproduce the crash, up until recently that would just visually crash my computer without a BSOD. After uninstalling+reinstalling my ATI drivers, it now returns back to the good old MEMORY_MANAGEME... Read more

Hey everyone, my Lenovo G50 laptop ( I bought it in store from bestbuy January of last year). Recently had a hardware failure and it seems to be directly linked to my attempt of charging my 3DS via PS3 controller charger by powering it through my laptop usb.  I wanted to charge my 3DS but didn't have my original charger so I saw that you can charge it with a PS3 controller charger. That worked. I had my laptop off the battery for the night. The battery died overnight the next morning it wouldnt turn on. I tried leaving it putting on the charger for about 10-15 mins and it still would not turn on. I made sure my plug was working and all of that. A friend of mine recently sent me a lenovo charger to see if my charger died. It still did not work.  So this is a warning that although not 100% sure, DO NOT insert a PS3 Controller Charger into a Lenovo G50. I'm not sure if the same would happen on other models.

Sorry to be gone from the forums for so long but I have been trying everything and more relating to software to remedy the "right click bogging down" issue. This includes leaving the computer off for two months; yet the issue remains. This leads me to believe that it is not a software issue at all but related to Hardware alone.

I ran the Lenovo Solution Center Hardware Test and got error messages from ... Memory - WME800800-QK8ZHH (failure)   and on the Hard Drive SMART Drive Self Test - WHD01V000-QK8ZHH (warning, not failure). I tested twice. The first time I tested, I used the longer, more complete test and the machine Blue Screened at the very end of the memory test. The Blue Screen showed this message ... KMODE EXCEPTION not handled and then ntsf.sys. I rebooted and ran the short version of the test and got the results above. It should be noted that in the 1st test, all aspects of the Memory failed. I also ran Chrystal Disk Info version 6.3.2 and received the message that the hard drive's Health Status is Good. Your suggestions or solutions, please.
