Preferred Solution: Maxtor A01A250 OneTouch 7200 RPM 250 GB External Hard Drive problem

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Maxtor A01A250 OneTouch 7200 RPM 250 GB External Hard Drive problem

in order to reformat you need to delete the existing partition. That part pretty much nuked your ability to see the data. You may try data recovery software(do a search). Or you can pay someone to do it for you(expensive). Depends on what you have on there and what it's worth to you. Don't get your hopes up though as there is no guarantee your data is recoverable.

I've just purchased this 500gb external hard drive for 70. It seemed a good deal for the money. I wanted an external hard drive to store all my digital photos as I have hundreds of them and they are taking up too much space on my laptop.

Anyone used one of these and do you think its a good buy for the money?

....I will seriously have a heart attack if I can't get this solved. I'm borderline an emotional breakdown right now. Excuse the length, I’m just letting you all know exactly what I did (well, from what I remember and to the best of my ability anyway). Sorry if some details are unnecessary; I just have to type it out (feel free to skim).
As stated in the title, I have a Maxtor OneTouch 4 hard drive (500 GB) that I've had for about a year or so (maybe more, maybe less; my memory really sucks). Yesterday, when I put some WinRAR and WinZip files in one of my folders and extracted them, I realized that I couldn’t delete them afterward. When I tried to delete those .rar and .zip files, a pop up window came up saying that my hard drive is unreadable, corrupt, inaccessible…yada, yada, yada, and gave me the error code 0x80070571. I tried a few more times and it still didn’t work, so of course at that point I was like “wtf”. Afterward, I tried to copy some files onto the hard drive, and the same message came up.
That’s when I became worried.
Being the "optimist" that I am, I figured that maybe if I restart my laptop or disconnect and reconnect my hard drive, everything will be fine, but that hidden feeling of doom that I get at moments like these told me otherwise. I have the worst luck when it comes to electronics (especially lately…You don’t even want to know).
And, like always, that feeling was right.

Move the folder ur trying to acess to a different location, or 2, put the harddisk in another HDD slot, if u have 1.... u probably do look around XD I didnt really understand the part about backup going into corrupt folder, wouldnt it make more sense just to make a new backup? sorry if im rong I didnt really understand there

My Maxtor Onetouch II external drive is 1.5 years old. All of a sudden two days ago it stopped working. The drive used to show up as F in my computer. When I go to Disk Management in Windows XP, the drive is called Disk 1 and lists the drive as unavailable. Under system in control panel I do see the drive. In other words, the computer seems to see the drive, but does not give it a drive letter. What would do this and how can I fix the problem?

Thank you.

Hey, everyone. I could REALLY use some help here...

I have a Maxtor External Drive OneTouch 4.
I keep all of my photography and files and everything important for work on it.

Well literally like an hour ago, my cat decided it was time to knock it off my desk (along with a ton of other stuff) and the drive fell about 2 feet. I wouldn't say it was a hard hit, since it fell on top of some other stuff. But it WAS turned on at the time when it fell...

I'm so mad that this happened, and of course, it's my fault for walking away from it...

But the point is, it won't show up on my computer when plugged in. It still turns on, and I can hear that the drive tries to turn on/spin but instead it just makes a quick beeping sound and does nothing. Also, my windows normally notifies me whenever a device or drive is being used/turned on by making a notification sound when anything is plugged into the USB -- this isn't happening anymore either.

Is there anyway to save my external drive? These files are extremely important to my work so I need all the help I can get in recovering them. If an external drive isn't working, does that mean all the data is gone? Or is it just the machine that isn't running? I don't really know anything about how the inside of an external drive works...can the data be removed and put into another working external drive? Should I take it into a computer shop...?

Please help.

HELP

Answer:Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini 250GB "no external drive selected"

This is really a question for Maxtor customer support, since the drive works in windows the drive is fully working as far as my help goes, notice the maxtor helper doesn't detect any drives and you have many connected, I would first try reinstalling and updating the maxtor application, I would also try removing some of the other drives you have connected since there are Five.

Try this, go to control panel, admin tools, computer management , diskmanagement , right click drive and make sure your backup partition is marked as active, since it shows in my computer it should already be.

Right click the drive in computer, properties, security and make sure you have full admin privileges.

I thought I'd try here as well as the Maxtor tech support, but they're all bureaucratic and long-winded.

I think my drive has a power supply error, a friend of mine plugged his laptop power cable into it by accident, and the ampage for his laptop was like three times the ampage the drive took.. so I think the power enclosure on the rear of the drive may be damaged, has anyone had this problem before and if so, is there any other way I can fix it without having to pay Maxtor alot of money?

I think I'm having the same problem as a post by dtrulez

Thanks for any advice,

Hi. I was hoping to shed light on an issue following installation (plug-n-play) of a Maxtor OneTouch 4 External HDD using Vista Home Premium, SP1.

I formatted the drive using NTFS (default). Drive runs fine (simply using as a music archive) until about 1-2 hours in, causes computer to reboot. Sometimes, I get the blue screen of death, telling me hardware was improperly installed.

Called Seagate and they ensured me the drive was a PnP and that no drivers were required to install it in Vista. They ruled out the drive being the cause.

Would anyboy have any leads on isolating this issue or might know the solution off hand? Thanks in advance for any advice.

I have a Maxtor External Hard drive....80GB Model 5000LE.
A While back I had a "device error" and searched the web to try to solve it. I guess from what I remember it had something to do with a bad file and it took too long to open up the file in the drive and it timed out or something. Anyway....I defragmented the drive and ran scan disk...problem solved..some files were deleted....kind of upset but not a big deal. Well, it happened again. This time instead a a specific file I could not get into (all these were mp3's and music videos etc...) the main folder (Ex:Jenna's Music and Videos) It kept on timing out......there are over 4000 music files in there. About 40 GB's worth. I couldn't even open the main file. SOOOOO I ran scan disk....defragmented...only this time when I finished the whole folder is gone!! I right click on the drive and it still says the space is being used but I cannot find my music/video files??? I ran file search and everything but I don't know where they are???? HELP!! Are these lost for good? If so...something is taking up the space correct??? No clue what is going on. Thanks.

hey, I have a External Maxtor 750GB OneTouch 4 Plus drive and I slightly bumped it over the other day while watching a video on it. Now when I plug in my drive it says in the task manager "new hardware found" (im using XP by the way) but when I go to device manager I can't seem to find the drive. My drive now makes beeping and grinding noises for the first three minuets when I give power to it but the drive still seems to spin. Is there much I can do to possibly get my data back besides taking the case apart and plugging it in internally?

Answer:External Maxtor hard drive problem

It sounds like the hard drive itself is damaged and not the enclosure. If so, installing it internally won't do any good. You could always try the freezer trick but I'm not so sure it will work here but you have nothing to lose. If your data if particularly valuable, there is always professional data recovery services. On the other hand if your data was that valuable, likely you would have your data backed up.

Hi guys, hoping to pick your collective brains on this one as I'm awaiting a reply from Maxtor/Seagate's email help. My maxtor 3200 series external hard drive won't power on properly anymore. When it worked, once the power cord was connected you could hear thew hard drive whirr into life, and the green light at the front of the unit would emit a solid, bright glow. At the moment, there are no noises whatsoever emanating from the unit, and the front light only flashes, very faintly and intermittently. I've tried two power cables, both of which work on other paraphanalia I've got lying around and I get the same results; so my presumption is that the unit itself is at fault. What does everyone reckon? Could the flashing faint light be something as simple as a loose power connection? Or is it indicative of a more serious problem? Further - whats the likelihood of being able to retrieve data from a knackered external hard drive if the worst has happened? Thanks, Dom

Answer:Maxtor external hard drive problem

No noises whatsoever would indicate the drive is dead. Though possibly a loose connection within the drive casing. As for data recovery, that is another thing altogether. It depends on how valuble the data is to you and whether is is worth the expense (very expensive) of employing a firm who specialise in this field.

I found some advice from last year regarding how to open the case. I was able to do so and discovered a Seagate 7200 HD which is what someone else stated then as well.

My problem which baffles me is that the unit is no longer recognized. I've tried all the trouble-shooting to no avail.

The unit makes a little noise like it's trying to work. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was at a loss when I opened the case. I was hoping to find something that had come loose inside the metal box, but all was secure. I did not open the drive itself as I wouldn't know how or what to do with it.

I just transfered some data from Maxtor OneTouch II to my computer, but suddenly it stopped and showed raw datas. Then I restart the windows XP and tried to fix it when it booted up (it said that some of the files and chain files are truncated - I don't understand what that means to my data ) . So now, the external drive no longer show raw datas but a folder named found.000 filled with thousands of "chk" files and a file named &2&2.

I then tried the latest Powermax from Maxtor, but it turned out that Powermax doesn't detect external harddrive (Mine is USB2.0). So no luck there?

Is there anyway to recover the data back? Or am I pretty much out of luck and have to reformat the HD ?

Answer:External Maxtor OneTouch II 200G corrupted - How to recover the data?

Those check files can be opened in Notepad. Although as it is in fragments you only find some pieces of readable text. All this can be cut and pasted, but a laborious job. It could be transfered to desktop (if you have one) to run Powermax to see if that would have more success.

I'm looking at two external hard drives:

WD My Passport Ultra, 1TB, 5,400 rpm, 4.33 x 3.21 x 0.62

G-Tech G-Drive slim, 500GB, 7,200 rpm, 5.08 x 3.23 x 0.39

I understand that transfer rate is a function not merely of rotational speed, but of platter density as well, which is affected by platter size as well as capacity. I'd ordinarily assume the platters were the same size in devices in this category, but as the G-Tech is significantly slimmer than the WD, I don't know if this also affects platter density, or if it simply means the housing has less shock-absorbing capability.

Given the differences in specs, will the G-Drive be significantly faster than the WD? I'd be using it for backup and occasional transportation of files. (Also, opinions concerning build quality, reliability of brand, quality of tech support, etc. would be appreciated. I have no experience with G-Tech).

I should also mention that I use a MacBook Pro, but I also run Windows 8.1 in Parallels Desktop, and they share a file system, so I don't really care if I backup from The Windows side or the OS X side.

Thank you.

I am having problems with the external HD on my PC.
Yesterday I pulled out the cable from it to the PC by mistake. When I re-started the PC a black screen came up with a message saying that NTFS (I think) wasn't working and it needed to scan or check for something. I glanced through the message briefly and it was on a countdown unless I tapped any key on the keyboard. I reached to do this too late and a speedy roll of delete something or other continuously scrolled up. I ended up turning off the PC manually to stop this.
I haven't a clue what it is or what it did, but the PC is now crawling along. The external hard-drive is showing empty, but I can access all the files on it. The problem is that the files are not happy being moved, copied or attached to emails. When I go to the image files they will not show icons without contacting administrator. All sorts of other stuff has probably happened that I don't know about.
IE is at a snail's pace and then seizes and 'not responding'.

As your mobo has USB2.0 built in anyway this drive should have no issues, but what I woudl try is to delete the USB driver for this drive, to do this unplug any other USB drives and pens, then open Device Manager and open the USB Controller branch and then plug in the drive and you should see a USB Mass Storage Device listed right click this and uninstall, then unplug and replug the drive in and the driver should be re-installed.

About 6 months ago I installed a 500-Gig Maxtor External HD I use as a "back-up" source. When I first installed it, it worked fine. Then I had a system crash and had to re-install WindowsXP Pro. Now this external drive is not recognized. A drive icon is also not displayed in My Computer.

In System Hwde Devices, there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the (Maxtor 500-Gig) USB Mas Storage Device. I have made several attempts to uninstall this drive and re-install it but the same identical message appears each time: Mass Storage Device Not Recognized.

I'm also getting a Code 39 error code informing me that the drivers for this device are either missing or corrupted.

Some time ago I was told that I would have to uninstall and re-install Windows XP Pro if I wanted to correct this issue. Is this true?

You should be able to that without any problem. Whenever you install a program you are usually given an option of what drive you want to install to; just select the new drive.

Same goes for downloading files, on the Save To screen just select the drive letter corresponding the the external drive and save it there. You can create folders by using My Computer on the drive.

Earlier today, I took all the videos from the desktop and cut pasted them onto a new Maxtor 230 (I think it's 230, could be off) external harddrive - so everything was moved from the desktop to the external harddrive in order to free up space on the computer.

A few hours later, I had another set of videos, so I plugged the camra and the harddrive both in and was transfering the video from the camra directly to the harddrive. My sister and her baby went on the computer while I was waiting for the video to finish transfering, and I clearly told her not to let the baby touch the wires or the harddrive. Well next thing you know, my sister is telling me that the baby not only touched it, she pulled the USB cord thing out of the back of it, then my sister plugged it back it. Now I'm not sure if the video was still transfering at this time or if it was finished.

So I wanted to make sure everything was ok and see if the video went on the hard drive ok - but long story short, the external harddrive isn't working anymore. It still lights up when I plug it in - I checked all the connections and everything, plugged it into all the diffrent USB ports, plugged it into my laptop - ... Read more

As with a few people on here, I have had an issue with my once thought 'always reliable' Maxtor 300 GB External Hard Drive. Then the inevitable occurred, and as I was writing to it, an error occurred, and computer kind of half froze, so I stupidly pulled out the USB Cable. Now when I plug the hard drive in, it doesn't even recognise it, nor when I try it out on other computers.

So it seemed like the next step was to pull it out of its case, and connect it to my home computer as a secondary drive. Got a friend over to do that for me, and now under disk managament, it says it is "unallocated", and seems like I can't access it. I tried to "Initialize" it, but doesn't seem to be doing anything.

So I guess my first question is what is this whole "initialize" command, as far as I have read, it is always the first step in formatting my drive (which is the LAST thing I want to do - did I say this data I have is unbacked up and priceless to me?). Is there any other suggestions people have for me?

Thanks in anticipation, cheers David.

My maxtor 250gb external hard drive isn't working.
When i plug it into my computer the light turns on and it makes the sound in the attached file (Had to be .zip because it wouldn't let me attach .amr). It is fairly quiet so you may need to turn your speakers up. I just need a quick fix to get some files.

i may not know enough about the problem to completly describe it...but i will 80 gig external hard drive was given to was rebuilt on a win 2000 home edition of win xp--reconginzes disk 1- in disk manager....however it is not formatted or able to be found, and does not have a drive letter assigend to it... i logged on as "administrator" safe mode, to see if i could get the drive path settings option to come up in disk manager ...i could not-------does any of this make any sense to anyone?.......that option still does not come up..under user or disk managment--so it is unformatted and has no drive letter......thus xp cannot find it......

Answer:maxtor external hard drive unformatted and undesignated by drive letter

What size is the hard drive?

Do you know what motherboard you have?

STEP 1: CHECK POWER (click for expanded instructions further down the page)

Verify that the drive light and the light on the AC adapter (power supply) is illuminated normally.
It is sometimes necessary to contact Technical Support for troubleshooting and/or possibly to replace the power supply if it behaves unusually.

STEP 2: CHECK CABLING (click for expanded instructions further down the page)

Confirm that your USB/Firewire cable is firmly connected in a port that is on the rear of your desktop computer (if you have a desktop).
Try another USB or Firewire port.
If your drive is powered only by USB, such as the FreeAgent Go, the Maxtor OneTouch mini, and the Seagate Portable drive, then the drive's cable has two USB connectors. Try connecting both of the free USB connectors into a USB port for maximum power availability.
Avoid connecting the drive via a USB hub for now.

Follow these instructions to ensure that your installation of Windows XP/2000 has been updated to the latest Windows Service Pack.

Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties.

The System Properties window will appear. On the General tab (which will be at the front), see the "System:" information.

For Windows 2000: Update to Service Pack 4.

For Windows XP: Update to Service Pack 2.

Allow your computer to complete the installation ... Read more

I know this is not perhaps a technical problem but I am biding for MAXTOR ONE TOUCH EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE 300GB on ebay it is approximatley 18 months old it is going at the moment for 74.00and has Firewire Connectivity. My question is what would be a reasonable price for this drive bearing in mind it is second hand unit. Again sorry as I know this is not really a technical question.

I have a 250G Maxtor external hard-drive which I took from the shelf and plugged in last night for the first time in several months. At first I noticed the light blinking erratically and also heard a constant clicking sound, the same sound over and over. I disconnected and then reconnected it, and this time the unit worked okay. I was able to access the contents. Later I disconnected and reconnected it several more times, only to find that it no longer works. All I get now is the unending clicking sound.

As far as I know it has been setting on my shelf for three months or so. To my knowledge it hasn't been moved, much less dropped. Assuming that it is irretrievably broken, are all external hard-drives this fragile? I thought I had been storing my stuff relatively safely -- as long as I didn't drop the unit. Maybe I was wrong. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to help.

Hi, what is the Model number of your drive? I assume it is a USB drive - is your computer USB2 compatible, because I suspect the drive is USB2, which I don't think is backward compatible to USB1.To find out if your pc is USB2 compatible ... Right-click on My Computer and then Left-click on Properties, then on Hardware then on Device Manager, then Left-click on the + beside Universal Serial Bus controllers - if you then see the word Enhanced anywhere within that section, then your PC is USB2 compatible. You can then just close all the small windows that you just opened. That will give us somewhere to start, to try to help you.

My brother gave me his older Maxtor Hard Drive, the One Touch but he threw tha manual away, it gave with this "base" or plastic thing that would let the maxtor stand. And I am not sure if I am suppose to attack this hard drive with the stand. I think it is inconvenient because I bring my hard drive to different places.

Here is a Maxtor One Touch, laying down:

Here is a Maxtor One Touch with a base/stand and standing:

So here are some questions:
_1) What is the propery way to use my One Touch?
__a) I must always use it standing up with a stand?
__b) I could use it standing up, or laying down, doesn't matter even if the ____Disk's are verticle or parrallel to gravity?

_2) How do I properly turn off the External Hard Drive?
__a) Safely Remove Plug and Play?
__b) Or I could just press the off button?
__c) dont do ANYTHING ur hard drive will die, just turn off computer then ____turn off the drive?

_3) How come everytime I add and remove data, copy and paste, and I wait a few seconds to make sure the drive isn't active, I can't safely remove hardware?

4) Is it better to keep the external hard drive on all day? or turn it off after each use? what happens if I keep on turning it on and off because I keep on saving backup data every 2 hours?

Thanks, for any help I can get man.

Answer:How do I use my Maxtor One Touch External Hard Drive Properly?

If you copy data data to it regularly leave it on.
If you only use it once a day, just turn it on then turn it off.

Use the "Safely Remove" hardware icon,or
if it`s got a power switch use that.

It will work vertically and horizontally.

Don`t bang it,or submerse it in boiling acid.

Have you tried different USB cables?

Have you thought about exchanging it for a new one?

Answer:Maxtor external hard drive will not respond after if was knocked over on the floor

OK, bad news. The likely scenario is that you have damaged the mechanics of the drive, but the electronics are still functioning, hence the detection, but no initialization.

This is the point where it usually goes to a data recovery company, at considerable expense.

Drives are rated at a couple hundred G's impact force, non-operating, much less if they're spinning. A drop from 3 feet up to a hard floor likely exceeds either of those limits, and collaterally voids the warrant.

I know, I can be such a wet blanket.

That said, I both advise and consent to you waiting for a second, or more, opinion(s).

PS, If any of the trash talk about Maxtor has any credibility, (?), you should have been thankful it responded before it was dropped. Mine works OK, but then so does my Emachines.

I have an eMachine T3092 computer to which I added a Maxtor One Touch 160 gig drive, everything is out of warranty. OS = Win XP Pro w/ sp2.

Outline of problem: On 7/21 I left home with the computer and nanny cam on. Returned 2 hours later & found the following message on screen:

Windows Delayed Write Failed. Windows was unable to save all of the data for the file
J: \SMft. (J drive = Maxtor) The data has been lost. The error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or a network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

I could not get access to this file to save it elsewhere. I could not get the Add/Remove Software list to populate. I couldn't do a system restore. I couldn't save anything to the J drive and the computer has been more than a little finicky ever since - very slow to open any/everything, insist I allow popups to open links on the web, or throws me off the internet - things like this. Anyway, tried everything I could think of to fix it, tried the things RoadRunner and eMachine suggested. Called Microsoft & pd them $59.00 to fix it and spent the entire week morning to night on the phone with them till they escalated the problem to the research team who told me that the problem is likely due to a surge, that 515K of data on the Maxtor is available to me, and that approx. 57 gigs of data is on the drive. This past Friday, the 3rd December, 2004 while in the middle of a System Restore, my system was interrupted by a local power outage. Since then my Maxtor 5000/120 GB External Hard Drive has been acting oddly. I first noticed a problem when rebooting the system when a "CHKDisk" for my Maxtor Drive was scheduled, which seemed to take quite a long time during the first of 3 phases. During the first phase it simply kept listing files on the Maxtor which were "unreadable". I simply escaped from this and attempted to reboot. Each time I reboot, the "CHKDisk" begins again, even though it's easy to cancel it.

The next issue relates to "Add/Remove" Programs under the Control Panel for Windows. The Maxtor Drive prevents the "Add/Remove" Programs window from being populated.

All scans by NORTON are also prevented when it gets to scanning the Maxtor drive.

While it is usually easy to access any file in the Maxtor Drive, now it is laborious and no file opens without excessive wait times. All files appear to be there. I already reformatted the drive from Fat to NTFS at time of purchase.

Six times I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Maxtor software and disconnected the drive and reconnected it only to face the same problems I previously listed.

I contacted DELL, my cpu manufacturer but they were of little assistance...their Tech first had me go online to check for adware and spamware, then suggested I contact Maxto... Read more

Answer:Maxtor 5000/120GB External Hard Drive Presenting Problems...Can Anyone Help?

I think your hard drive got damaged because of the power outage.
If I where you, I would backup what I need from the hard drive and reformat it.
I don't think it's a problem with the software. It is more likely that it is the hard drive itself that is causing the problem, formatting the drive could solve your problems.

Hi There,

My first post here and I promise I'll stick around and try help out others rather than simply disappear if and when someone's helped me out

My question concerns a Maxtor 3000LS 40GB external hard drive I bought recently. Naiively I assumed that it would get all its power from the USB cable and therefore I'd be able to use it in both the UK (where I am based now) and the US (where I will be based soon). However, when it arrived I realised that it needed an external power source. Serves me right for not reading the spec. properly I guess

Anyway, the power pack that it comes with splits in two i.e. the big chunky bit with the wire leading to the hard drive and the wire that leads to the mains. The hard drive came with two mains leads: A UK compatible lead and a mainland European lead. Now my query is, assuming that I could get hold of a US compatible mains lead, would plugging it into the chunky bit:

a) Not have enough power to do anything?
b) Frazzle the components?
c) Cause a rift in the space-time continuum?

I confess, I didn't pay much attention in physics class and so am a bit baffled by volts, amps, ohms, current and other flavours of electrickery so if anyone - preferably someone with knowledge of the hardware - could give any advice, then I'd be really grateful.
Many thanks,

Answer:Maxtor 3000LS External Hard Drive - Using International Power Sources

Look at the specs on the power supply. It may be a universal supply, many of them are nowadays. I just checked a camera and a USB 2.0 hard disk supply, both state 100V to 240V 50/60Hz, so they'll run either in Europe or the US.

I'm running windows vista and I have a maxtor touch mini external hardrive. I've never had any problems with it. But now when I open My Computer the harddrive is nowhere to be seen. I'm all up to date w/ windows updates and when I go into Device Manage it says the device is working properly and is up-to-date w/ it's drivers. So what's the deal? I know my computer is registering the device is there because it makes the 'device inserted' noise and in the safely remove hardware tab the device appears as 'USB Mass Storage Device'. In disk management it shows up as Disk 1 (pretty sure it's referring to that anyway) It says it is unknown and uninitialized, when I try to initialize it an error message pops up that states device is not ready- under properties it says it's working properly and up to date w/ drivers. Answer:Problem with Maxtor external drive

Hi there, due to my own experiences, Maxtor Harddrives are quite poor and cant handle much punishment such as hard resets etc. I personally would not try to sort it yourself as you have valuable data on it that cant afford to be lost.

Take it to a qualified technician to test and find out what the problem is.

If the hard drive is defunct, there are people who can attempt to swap the hard drive platter out of your old hard drive and in to an identical now hard drive.

Please note that this process is not 100% guarateed.

Sorry thats not much help and good luck

I phoned Maxtor and they place the blame on the computer and I find the support from them is not very good once you get past the endless sales screens, which is a shame as they offer a nice component. Install and setup; Maxtor One Touch 4, 500GB External Hard Drive, and install; Acronis True Image Home Program

NOTE: See system specs below for my current setup.

I need advice and recommendations, and any pitfalls to avoid, to ensure that I end up with a trouble-free install and operating system.

I want to install and add both of the above to my current setup, but am uncertain about the best way to go about achieving a successful result.I intend to add the HD to take some pressure off my ACER C: Drive [12GB free of 52.1GB], by moving some programs that I have on it, to the Ext HD.Once the Ext HD is installed, is it possible to just do a 'drag and drop' of programs, from the C: Drive, across to the new ?: Drive? Am I able to designate or give the new Ext HD a name? eg. H: Drive.I'm also presuming that the new Ext HD will need to be 'hardlined' and powered on, only while I want to use the programs etc on it, and when doing updates via IE7. Does that sound right?I want to install the Acronis True Image program to the Ext HD, as 'insurance' to clone the content of my Notebook, its systems, functions, settings etc. Does this seem right? Some of the programs that I intend to move to the Ext HD include these and similar others; Family Tree Maker, Photo Shop, Irfan View, Real Player, Open Office etc. Do these appear to 'qualify' for movement to the Ext HD?Are there any issues that I should be aware of, that could affect operations with the Brother MFC-465CN printer/scanner etc.... Read more

Answer:Setup Maxtor One Touch 4, 500GB External Hard Drive and Acronis True Image 11 Home.

Yes you can give the HD a new name. Vista will assign a drive letter, but you can change that later if you wish.

No, you will not be able to 'drag and drop' most installed programs to the new drive. You may have to re-install them. The registry entries will be pointing to their old location and the apps won't start.

By hardlined, I assume you mean plugged in and switched on? Yes, it needs to be 'hardlined' to access the drive.

Using Acronis is a good idea.

Another thing you may want to do before using the external drive is format it as NTFS, to avoid any installation problems if the drive is formatted in Fat32 etc.

Your printer should be fine.

Thanks in advance for the help. A couple of days ago google started redirecting after clicking each link on a search results page, also spybot and malware bytes won't run. I tried re-installing spybot, but to no avail it didn't work. I keep getting the bluescreen of death (I apologize in advance for not writing down what the screen said, as soon as I get it again I'll post it) and my computer will crash randomly. My external hardrive is recognized in my computer, but in the maxtor manager program it isn't recognized. Also, I recieved several warnings from Mcafee right when I started seeing the malware take affect, saying that there Mcafee was blocking buffer overflows. I ran Dr.Web scanner and removed a trojan entitled Backdoor.tdss.115 and ran Kaspersky prior to running Dr.Web scanner, and it was found there also. Here are the logs:

Hi, I dual boot Vista Ultimate and XP Pro. I have a Maxtor OneTouch 4 (500GB) connected to my pc at all times (no booting from, just for storage). When I boot into Vista I am able to access the external drive fine, however when I'm in XP it appears in My Computer; however is inaccessible. In Vista the Icon for the OneTouch is replaced by a custom icon stored on the drive (an image of the drive itself that came preinstalled on it). This icon is not visible in XP; simply the default drive icon isntead, also the drive name ("OneTouch4") is not used under XP; simply "Local Disc).

I've tried unplugging/restarting the hard drive while remaining in XP; but to no avail. XP claims that the drive is corrupt or unreadable however Vista is able to read it fine.

The OneTouch is comprised of 1 partition, NTFS formatted.

If anyone knows how I can get XP to read it it would be greatly appreciated as it holds all my music, and therefore I am working in silence when using XP.

Answer:Maxtor OneTouch 4 and XP

check Adminstrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management and see what things look like. Sometimes external drives have problems because XP tries to name different drives the same drive letter name, and the fix is to manual assign a drive letter name as needed to fix the issue.

After connecting the 1394 Maxtor external drive. The Compaq Presario 5630 with a TI 1394 board does not recognize the drive. I have downloaded all W98 SE critical updates. The Maxtor help desk could offer no help. I am waiting for a Maxtor expert to call. The 1394 board does work. I have connected another 1394 device through the maxtor to test it. Any thoughts

I won't go back over signs and symptoms but check the posts below and if anyone has a clue send me a hollar. At this point I am left with the only option of phoning the company again and/ or being resigned to the fact that the Maxtor OneTouch doesn't work with all computers (would be acceptable if I had a Twiddle-Dee-dum Comp Corp computer but this is a HP running XP). Given that Maxtor was firm in blaming the USB I don't imagine much support but I will try. Wanted to throw the question out to the enlightened (computer) rogues who may have encountered the problem previously and I would like to know if any out there have the same problem left unresolved. Thanks to all in advance.

Answer:Maxtor External Drive USB problem, the enigma machine

Yessss Hmmmm I also have an HP only Vista. external HDD maxtor and Seagate both worked @ 3 mo's then locked up the whole machine, when powered back up they were scrambled also no recognition in disk mgr. I always suspected the USB as the performance capability is not there and the OEM websites all say "Oh Well they're only really meant for back up anyway.  There is something wierd about HP's slow USB and the way other devices work too, like more than 1 flash drive at a time. The best Ive found is just use internal HDD's

This drive has been my backup for about 6months now. Suddenly when I turn it on the light on the front just flashes rapidly and I cannot get it to connect to my xp machine using usb or firewire. Is it toast? Or is there a magic trick im missing to make it work with my pc again.

Answer:Maxtor OneTouchII 200gb external drive problem

Have you had any windows updates lately, or installed anything new?

If the drive isn't kapuut, it could be a case of a corrupted file-system of that HD or partition!
You could try and take it out of the case, set it to slave, and stick it in a PC connected to an IDE-cable.
Then hunt around for various Data-recovery programs.

Hi all,

Just got a Maxtor OneTouch III Drive and hooked it up to my laptop, using it in tandem with Norton Ghost 10... according to the packaging, the drive is "hot swappable" which means that it should be able to be ejected by going to "Safely remove hardware" then stopping the drive.

However, when I do so, I get a message saying "This device: generic volume cannot be stopped right now. Please try stopping the device again later."

It's recognized by my comp as a hard disk drive, not a removable storage... and I did install the maxtor software before I hooked up the drive.

I want to be able to eject the drive, if that's even possible.

Please let me know,

Answer:Maxtor OneTouch III Issue

you should be able to disconnect any portable hard drive without any problems, provided that the disk is not being accessed when you pull the plug. you do not need to go to 'safely remove hardware.'

Widnows Vista is not recognizing my exteral hard drive. It shows up in Device Magager, but other than that: nothing. It won't let me boot to windows when it's plugged in. If I plug it in after windows boots, explorer will quit responding, then I have tounplug it so every thing will run.

I've gotten the HDD to run in Ubuntu, so I know that atleast the HDD isn't kaput. It has to be a problem with windows, my main OS.

Answer:Maxtor OneTouch III headache

To clarify, it works SLOWLY on Ubuntu, but that may be because I was booting from disk, because I somehow mucked up the partition. But it still WORKS, so I don't know what the problem is on windows.

Ok here is the situation.

I have a 250Gb Maxtor OneTouch FireWire and USB - bought by my company. We are not using it to backup data, but to use as an external hard drive to service computers with, i.e. Ghost from - carrying multiple images.....

Maxtor says that it is not possible to boot from this hard drive. Not so, I was able to partition the drive and make it bootable with a 98 disk. The BIOS of my test Compaq P4 picks it up and boots. I have it setup to boot and execute the autoexec.bat right into Ghost.

No problems here, but it transferrs at an average 32mgs a minuete. That is so slow, I believe it is operating a USB 1.1, even though both the PC and drive are capable of USB 2.

First riddle is how to get it to connect at USB 2. Since the device is USB and is already mounted in order to boot, it would be useless to put any drivers on the drive itself.

Part two - On test system 2 - HP PIII, the BIOS does not support booting from USB. I have a Cypress Semiconductor disk that supports USB and am able to boot from floopy, mount the drive and access the drive. Once again it is slow.

This is a USB 2 driver, so I dont know what it holding it back. It boots from a 98 boot disk. I wonder if 98 supports USB 2, or if it is the root of the problem.

Additional ramblings...... It transferrs fine while windows xp is booted, it come up as an regular drive. It took 7 minuets to to copy 2Gig off our network, but when I boot from into dos and try and COPY from the USB drive to a sla... Read more

Answer:Maxtor OneTouch FireWire and USB

98 does not support USB 2.0 natively. XP SP1 was the first OS to support USB 2.0 although intel had other drivers available before this point.

I know that this is partly my fault, since I continue to chug along with Win98SE installed. With that said...

I purchased an 80mb Maxtor Onetouch drive. It is connected via USB 2.0. From the start, the installation has been problematic. Using the CD-ROM provided, it installed drivers and Retrospect Express backup software. The combination of both is bad for Win98SE. With the drive connected, it persistently hung the machine at boot.

A call to Maxtor tech support only revealed that they have a set of updated drivers on their Web site. The problem is that the install for the Retrospect Express is too tightly tied on the CD-ROM. Doing that install, so that there would be a suitable backup program to work with the Onetouch, only put me back to Square #1 with the hang at boot.

After a lot of scrubbing on the hard drive and in Registry, I managed to kill it all and get back to normal. Then I installed only the updated drivers--leaving off Retrospect Express. Although the drive functions, I have 2 remaining issues that I have been unable to resolve.

1. When the Onetouch is connected at boot, the structure of drives is changed. The Onetouch insert itself into the middle of the drive tree (pushing the CD-ROM to one letter higher.) Maxtor tech support says they have no control over it (somewhat true) and that it's a Microsoft issue (somewhat true.) I don't even dare try calling Redmond. [As a side note, if connected after boot and Windows up, it does properly show up as ... Read more

Sad to say, short of tinkering around with the drive and settings, I don't see a push-button solution for you. I was dragged, kicking and screaming, into 2K and XP several years back, and I've never looked back. I really think that biting the bullet and upgrading to XP is the right course of action.

FOLDER Mac OneTouch 4
FILE autorun.inf a setup information file
FILE Launch.exe a DemoShield Multi-CD Launch Macrovision Coporation
FILE Launch.ini Configuration Settings
FILE OneTouch 4 Plus.dmg DMG File

Answer:files on - MAXTOR ONETOUCH 4 PLUS ?

Generically, external drives often come with backup software for both Windows & Mac, plus button controller software (possibly also for Windows & Mac) often called a 'driver'. Of course you don't need to use any of that. The drive should install just fine without running hte button software-but the buttons that make it a 'One-Touch' backup drive won't work. Likewise you don't need to use the included backup software, but your current backup software might not interact with the buttons even if you install the driver.

So it really depends on what you want to do with the drive-use it as a bare external drive or use the included backup software & shortcut buttons?

We just bought a Maxtor OneTouch 4Plus external, 1TB hard drive to of course save all our stuff.
What we were wondering is, can we use this external drive to accommodate 2 computers. My wife has a laptops with Vista on it and I have a PC box with XP.
Being that we don't have that much experience with back-up hardware, could we partition and use this drive as back-up for both computers? Thanks in advance,
Ken and Christine

I'm sure you found your answer, but in order for mine to work, a password had to be created on the device.  Make sure it is in your startup so that you "unlock" it each time or the backup will not run.  I found this looking into another issue is the reason it is nearly a year later!!!!Thanks,James

I am trying to reconnect a Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus external hard drive (500GB w/ USB 2.0 and FireWire 400).
I am getting a yellow ! for the PCI Simple Communications Controller
Gone to Dell and tried chipset downloads, but not sure if they're installing.

Would like some feedback from you guys on this forum, if possible.

Answer:Need PCI Communications Controller and Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus

As Dell dont list many drivers for your model DELL, its not uncommon to have one or two that maybe not found when Windows installs, did you clean install Windows 7 or was this an Upgrade install from Vista?

Have you tried other USB ports or Firewire in your PC?

I think you have the Chipset driver installed ok as many of the components are showing up in your log file above, items like SMBUS etc but one thing I would like to check is, is your Windows version 32bit or 64bit? (can check by clicking Start then right clicking Computer > Properties and should tell you under System)

So if its 64bit do make sure you install the 64bit Chipset driver and/or you can also isntall the latest Intel Chipset for your G45 based motherboard from Intel HERE, just pick 32bit or 64bit Windows 7 from the list, then install and reboot (crucial to reboot)

And also some folks have had sucess with installing the Maxtor/Seagate Freeagent software HERE

In Computer does the drive not show up as a connected drive? if not check Disk Management to see if it shows? if it does then right click it and choose Change Drive Letter and change it to something like X Y or Z, then check Computer to see if it shows.

In Device Manager click Show Hidden Devices in the View menu, and then expand all the branches under each device, and if you see any grey'd out ones then uninstall all the grey'd out ones, then reboot and plug your external drive in. If you get any errors let us ... Read more

Ok, this is a brand new Maxtor OneTouch III 60GB Mini USB 2.0 external HDD.
I have XP Pro (yes, admin user).

When I first plugged the thing in, XP installed it, including the OneTouch software which was on the drive itself (it came with NO CD).

I played around with the software, it worked, I did a backup, etc... I set the settings the way I wanted. I unplugged it and plugged back in and tried the button on the drive, all was well.

Then I noticed a new Maxtor process that was taking 50% resources. I looked it up and it was the Sync process which continually checks your selected backup folders for file changes. I looked up the process and it is not needed if you aren't using the Sync feature. I wasn't, I was using the normal backup feature. So I removed the process from startup.

Well a couple days later I tried to do a backup and it wouldn't do it. Instead of showing files being backed up, it just sat there saying "Backup Process" with no other text. I left it overnight, it was still sitting there saying the same thing.

Now that is the background. Here is the problem:

If I hover over the OneTouch icon in the system tray, it says "Backup to OneTouch III Complete!"
I don't know what "complete" means, it always says like, like it's stuck or something?
If I go into the software, it shows the drive, and I can run diagnostics on it and everything seems fine. I have a drive letter, I can browse the d... Read more

Where are my pictures on my Maxtor Onetouch 4???

Okay, So I backed all the memory hogging stuff off my laptop and moved it over to the Maxtor,
I thought I checked to see if it saved it okay, then went and deleted it all off the PC.
You know, The pictures, the movies and music!

I'm missing,
jpeg's, etc..?

Okay, Sorry if I am coming across like I have that smoke coming from my ears, But I just had to go have a moment under my desk and steer clear from my wife, before for she asks me a question that I going to have to provide a calm answer for. OMG, I'm going to crack!

Can I recover or find my files anywhere?
Is there someway the HDD is 'hiding these files?

Answer:Solved: Where are my pictures on my Maxtor Onetouch 4???

Well I solved the BIGG problem!

Here is what I did wrong, besides writing a thread before the smoke cleared from my ears!
I did not notice, the HDD had a feature were it keeps a history of your back-up. I found my files in the first history log back-up files where/from whence i placed them. I was looking in the most recent back-up(after the time I had deleted the files off the PC) I thought they all merged together, but that is not the case!

Just been rooting around my computer due to boredom, and noticed when I hovered over the windows flag in my hidden icons at the bottom, it says "Solve PC Issues: 1 message", so I clicked the flag and it opened up the following screen:

What does this mean? I have no idea how long I've possibly had this issue in the Action Centre for as I rarely ever click the flag due to it being in my hidden icons. It's probably nothing, but thought I'd report anyway, to be on the safe side.

Answer:Maxtor OneTouch II/III - Action Centre

It may not be compatible with Windows 7 64-bit (ie only a 32-bit driver available), or you may be able to get the driver via Windows Update if you ensure that the drive is attached, plugged into the mains supply & switched on when you use Windows Update:

I was there a way to easily network the drive with the other computers in my house?
Also, seeing as how the backup software that comes with it is very lacking, would I be able to use another backup program in place of the included one?

Last question, I promise:
Since the drive is usable as a boot-drive...would I be able to use something like Windows Home Server on it to network it that way?
