Maxtor Diamond 10 80 GB Sata Hard Drive

Question: Maxtor Diamond 10 80 GB Sata Hard Drive

I installed windows xp on this and it was fine. However, I can't get windows to fully recognize this hard drive. It always puts it in the 2nd channel master in the bios start up no matter how I plug in the cables (or don't plug some in) and it calls it a removeable drive with the icon on the taskbar to safely remove this hardware. Also, it freezes after I go into windowsupdate.com and/or a couple minutes or so after loaded into windows. I've looked through the manual and it says it will take sata up to 3 gb/s (which this is) and I set the jumper to limit it to 1.5 since that's all the cable is good for.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey all, im having some issues with an Maxtor One Touch 4 500GB external hard drive i purchased. I bought it about 6 months ago, and it worked perfectly during that period. However i recently went overseas for a month and when i came back my computer was unable to recognise it as an external device.
The hard drive runs of usb and a power adaptor, and when i first turnoed on my machine and attempted to plug in my external hard drive, the computer froze, when i reset it failed to load with the hard drive still plugged in.
I removed it and everything worked perfectly, i once again tried to plug in the hard drive, and it attempted to reinstall the software on my computer, yet i was still unable to see or view the device through my computer or safely remove hardware.
With further attempts disconnecting and reconnecting the hard drive my computer would freeze and windows explorer would reset or close.

I was able to get my music data off of a friend, and all that remains on the hard drive are movies, and general copies of files on my computer, so i wasn't to worried about losing data.

Today i decided id attempt to play around with it again, and i read on several posts that the issue could have been caused by the casing of the external hard drive. I removed the hard drive from the case, and purchased a new SATA cable to connect to my motherboard. Yet when i attempted to turn on my PC with the hard drive connected via only this cable it came up with the message, "unable to rea... Read more

Answer:Maxtor/SATA hard drive issues

Some steps to consider:

Are you giving the hard drive power when connecting to your motherboard? You need to connect the Sata power cable to the drive. Simply plugging the sata data cable in isn't enough.
Are you disconnecting your other internal hard drive?
If the external HD is powered and the internal hard drive is connected, check BIOS for boot priority. It may be attempting to read from the external drive and when it fails to find boot data, you get that error.

Good luck

I am trying to get windows xp installed on my new system but it keeps telling me that it can't find a hard drive on my system. I have used the motherboard cd to make a sata driver disk and I have pressed F6 at the beginning of the XP cd loading. I have chosen the WINXP Promise driver, it loads it I press enter then I press enter again to install windows and it says that there is NO HARD DRIVE. WHAT THE CRAP! Can someone give me some help. I have 4 serial ata ports on the motherboard. 2 of which have "pri sata" & "sec sata" written. The other 2 have "sata1" & "sata2" written. Is there a certain one that I should plug into? HELP! Should I use the power adapter for the SATA DRIVE or just the regular power cable? ANY help would be great thanks!

With SATA, there are 2 POST's. First is BIOS. 2nd is SATA. Enter the 2nd by pressing a key. Refer to manual. Add the new drive there. Save and reboot.

I have a maxtor hard drive SATA 200GB as my main drive and a second drive D.
Very recently when I have noticed that my computer took longer to boot into windows. Applications seem to take a bit longer than usual to load.
I have XP SP2 installed. I defragment my drive every few weeks so its not a defragment problem however when I try to defrag it now, it takes many times longer to do so.
Also for a scan disk of C: (chkdsk on boot) it took 6 hours to get to about 25%. So there must be a problem. I can hear the hard drive loading sound for a few seconds and then there is a very long pause maybe about 10-20 minutes. It should only take a few hours the last time i did it maybe about 5 hours. Something is wrong.

When I transfer a large file like 1gb into my drive D it takes 15 minutes. Which is a bit long for a SATA enabled hard drive. I have had this drive for about 2 years now and it has never gone this slow before.

I have downloaded the seatools from the maxtor website which diagnoses the drive. The tool ran slow but my hard drive passed the tests.

Also when I ran that scan disk, it did say there was a mirror copy of something and also some other things. I think it had the word security in it so it deleted somethings. It mentioned indexes and some files.
I forgot most of it.

I have checked my D drive and it is running fine and unaffected.
Also I noticed during bootup that on the windows logo screen, the one with the bar moving from left to right that it freezes for about 5 ... Read more

the drive is a maxtor ultra sata, and i used the maxtor sata/150 pci card to connect the drive.

any suggestions on what went wrong?

i uninstalled norton ghost and also reformatted the new maxtor drive, but the computer is still slow when it is connected. when i disconnect the drive, my computer runs fine.

Hi and welcome. Clicking sounds and hard drives are always bad news.

You might download the drive diagnostics from Maxtor's website, if you didn't get a floppy or cdrom with the drive. Test the drive and see what error reports pop up.

I just installed a Maxtor Diamond/Max/Plus 120 GB using an ADS Pyro Fireware kit off of an iMAC DVD Special Edition running OS 9.2. The PC recognized the drive and said that it would format it out at 114 GB, which is about what I expected. However, when I check the drive under properties it only shows to be about 50 GB. Any idea of what is happening here.

PS: I use this combo with other maxtor drive the largest being a 80 GB and it works great.

Thanks.

Hi and welcome.

Just put in my 2 cents worth: One reason could be there are hd size limitations with some mobos and you may have to partition to smaller chunks. Or the psu output wattage may not be great enough.

Hi all.

I have recently purchased 2 new Maxtor DiamondMax 11 500Gb SATA II Hard Drives. After installing them into my system I noticed that I was unable to install XP. The installation would freeze before getting to the partitioning section of the install process. Fortunately I had XP installed on another hard drive so I quickly plugged that drive in and booted from that. After booting into Windows the system detected both the new drives and installed the relevant drivers for them. I then proceeded to go into Disk Management to partition them. Much to my dissmay, I am unable too. Ever time I go to initialize the disks the Disk Management Applet just freezes. I have tried running both drives on both SATA Controllers but to no evail. Same problem both times. I have tried running the drives in SATA I mode but still have the same problem.

Any advice on this matter would be appriciated.

Hi,
I have about 20 Maxtor Diamond Disks on different machines. Compared to disks from other manufacturers (Western Digital, e.g.), I noticed that the Maxtor disks get much hotter (about 55-60°C vs. 40°C for a Western Digital in the same slot of the tower). The only way I found to decrease the temperature is to put a fan below the disk.
I alos had a series of disk failures and wonder if these are not casued by overheating.
Am I unique in having these problems ? What is the experience of other members with Maxtor Diamond disks overheating and failures ?

Regards.

Hi

I have a problem with my sata maxtor hdd which happens to be my primary drive.

Was working fine no problem, turned pc off to go bed. Woke up to use it and the hdd is not detected in the bios at all.

I did not update anything or change any settings the previous day it was working. The 2nd sata drive is detected fine.

I can hear the drive power up and spin etc but theres no unusual sounds coming from it.

I have tried swapping cables around with ones that I know work and tried the maxtor hdd in another pc but no luck.

Any advise would be helpful

HiI was recently forced to upgrade my motherboard to MSI 865g Neo2 LS as my old one died. With this board it has 2 SATA sockets (marked TATA 1 & 2) as I understand this is for raid 0. So as we all do, I go out and get 2 x 200 GB HDD. After a lot of messing about and phoning the MB supplier, to get the board to acknowledge the HDD. Now I can only see 1 HDD in my computer. It shows DSK2_Vol 1 (189GB)I understand if you put 2 HDD in SATA sockets 1 & 2 it goes to raid 0 so you get the speed but it thinks there is only one HDD but shouldn?t it show 400 GB?Or is the computer not detecting the 2 HDD.

Answer:maxtor external hard drive unformatted and undesignated by drive letter

What size is the hard drive?

Do you know what motherboard you have?

STEP 1: CHECK POWER (click for expanded instructions further down the page)

Verify that the drive light and the light on the AC adapter (power supply) is illuminated normally.
It is sometimes necessary to contact Technical Support for troubleshooting and/or possibly to replace the power supply if it behaves unusually.

STEP 2: CHECK CABLING (click for expanded instructions further down the page)

Confirm that your USB/Firewire cable is firmly connected in a port that is on the rear of your desktop computer (if you have a desktop).
Try another USB or Firewire port.
If your drive is powered only by USB, such as the FreeAgent Go, the Maxtor OneTouch mini, and the Seagate Portable drive, then the drive's cable has two USB connectors. Try connecting both of the free USB connectors into a USB port for maximum power availability.
Avoid connecting the drive via a USB hub for now.

STEP 3: WINDOWS SERVICE PACKS

Follow these instructions to ensure that your installation of Windows XP/2000 has been updated to the latest Windows Service Pack.

Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties.

The System Properties window will appear. On the General tab (which will be at the front), see the "System:" information.

For Windows 2000: Update to Service Pack 4.

For Windows XP: Update to Service Pack 2.

Allow your computer to complete the installation ... Read more

1.This problem is typically caused by a failing cable that connects the drive to the computer. Check all the cables and be sure they are placed firmly.2.Run SFC and see if it replaces any missing OS files. To run SFC go to -Start-Run-and type sfc/scannow or from command window type the same thing.3.Uninstall and re- install the drive.

So here's the deal: I would like to put an old hard drive that was given to me into my computer. So I wanted to test it out to make sure it didn't have any viruses and to see if it had been wiped clean or not. Well I hooked it up to an old computer of mine and I checked the hard drive space and was told that it had 2 partitions of 6 Gb each. I went ahead and loaded up fdisk on Win98, deleted all partitions and set up a new primary partition with max space and active. Then I reformatted the drive and loaded up windows and was told that I only have 7.8 Gb now. Well I looked on the cover of the hard drive and noticed that there should be 13.5 Gb so I'm basically missing a lot of space. If someone could please help me recover that space it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Is the hard drive showing at its proper size in your BIOS?When you run FDISK did you say "Y" when it asked if you needed large disk support? If you are running windows XP you could also just trying partitioning the drive within windows (I assume this is a 2nd drive in addition to whatever drive you have windows on)To do that go to START->Control Panel->Admin Tools (may need to have it set to classic view to see admin tools)Double click "Computer management" and click on "Disk management"It will then display your hard drives installed.  NOTE:  Be sure you select the proper drive and do not delete patitions you want to keep!  Right click on the area of your maxtor that you want to use, delete that 7.8 GB partition you made and then right click it again to create a partition, then right click it again to format.

Question: Maxtor Hard Drive

Evening all, I have just got the above hard drive from Dabs, 80 gig, 8 mb buffer, model number 6Y080P0. I installed it first as a slave drive using Maxblast3 running as a floppy and then copied my XP Pro installation over to it. It is recognised in device manager as the correct model and also in My Computer but each time I boot up I get the Found New Hardware Wizard asking if I want to install the hard drive. I have tried connecting to the net in the hope that it will find drivers and install them but no joy and anyway if it is recognised in Device Manager why does this wizard come up? Formatting it within Windows and then reinstalling XP makes no difference.Apart from that it is very noisy, certainly a lot more than the Seagate it is replacing. Anybody any experience of these drives?

Under device manager the maxtor HD shows up and says it is working properly, and also it shows up in the USB as mass storage device. I run Win XP and was wondering if i need to format this thing or if its broken? Thanks a bunch

Answer:Plumax/Maxtor 2.0 USB hard drive

The drive is working fine. The reduced speed message is normal when you plug a USB 2.0 device into a USB 1.1 port.

As far as the drive not appearing, it's not formatted! Right click on My Computer, select Manage. Select Disk Manager, and find the USB drive in the drive list. Right click on the drive and select Format. When you get done, it'll show up in My Computer.

Hey guys

I have a Maxtor Hard Drive hooked up to my Mac Book Pro and the other day (midway through using it!) it lost power supply, By this I mean the disk has ceased to spin and the light on the hard drive has gone out. I think it is a fault with the power input and I need a second opinion. It is not a fuse in plug as I have changed power leads but there is a power inverter before the power lead gets to the hard drive - what is the chances its a fault with this - there is a light on the power pack but it flickers when I plug it into the drive yet the hd doesn't move, light up or even fart!

Help!

Thanks Tom

Answer:Maxtor Hard Drive - no power!

What Model Maxtor External is this? I had a Maxtor PS3000 die on me, it turned out to the electronics in the enclosure died but the drive itself was fine. Ended up installing it interrnal in one of my systems.

I am having an issue with a Maxtor Model Number 92739U6 hard drive. I have just finished formatting and installing windows xp home edition. Everything was going ok until I restarted the computer.

First right after I restarted the computer I got an error message A Disk Read Error Occurred. Press CTRL+ALT+Del.

I was unsure what caused this error message so I started to research this issue on Maxtor’s website and they advised me to use fdisk /mbr to repair the error. I did that and restarted the computer.

Same Error….

The thing I can’t figure out is why I am able to boot right to windows using a boot disk.

Can anyone tell me what I should do next?

What would I have to get windows to load without a boot disk?

I removed the harddrive from my other XP Pro tower, its a Maxtor 100 gb PATA 133 HDD & would like to know how to hook it up to the tower I'm on now to possible remove some tunes & pictures.
Picture attached

Answer:Checking out a Maxtor hard drive

Well, you do the opposite of what you did on the XP tower.

1. Secure the the HDD in the HDD bay.
2. Connect the power and IDE cables to the HDD
3. Power up your PC and check the BIOS to see if your HDD is being detected.

BUT FIRST, you might want to check the jumper setting on the Maxtor, to make it a Slave drive.

If the HDD was the only (or primary) drive in the XP tower, chances are it is configured as the Master drive, which will of course cause a conflict in your current tower.

this guide shows the jumper settings for your HDD:

Hello,

I have a Maxtor 500 gig Hard drive. I got it a while back as a gift and never had a chance to use it until I got an external case for it. However, when I first started the HDD up, my computer only registered a 150 gig hard drive. I thought that was odd, so I tried to reformat it, but I kept on getting only 150. I tried atleast 3 different external cases and they all gave me the same result.

Does anyone know how to fix this or have anything that I can try to see what's wrong with my Hard drive?

Thanks.

It seems I'm not 100% out of the woods just yet. I had a plethora of issues earlier that led to me having to do a recovery/windows reinstall on my computer recently. You can read all about that at this thread: http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?p=336176#post336176.

I am now having a strange issue since recovering the computer where it seems that everytime I try to open my G drive, the 160 GB Maxtor hard drive, it freezes up on me. In total I have 4 hard drives on this machine. 2 40 GB drives, 1 160 GB drive and 1 200 GB drive. They are set with a Promise/Raid configuration as per my motherboard...an Asus P4C 800 Deluxe.

The window that would be showing the contents of the drive will freeze up when I try to explore the contents of the drive through "my computer" and my mouse pointer will intermittetly freeze on the screen several times. I have to try using ctrl+alt+delete to shut it down but most of the time have to hit the reset button on the computer. I sure hope this 160 GB drive isn't trying to fail on me. I've also noticed that when I double click on shortcuts on my desktop that point to programs on that drive also cause this weird freezing issue. This all seemed to start after me recovering the system. The only 2 things I did differently when recovering than what I normally do is that I installed the Promise/Raid configuration AFTER recovery and I changed the defualt file system on the 40 GB drive that is home to windows and n... Answer:Problems with 160 GB Maxtor Hard drive

Your systems power supply is probably working beyond it's max output, and is dieing. The 160GB + hard drives get very hot. Heat = lots of current draw. I aso have 4 hard drives, a CD/DVD burner and a DVD ROM. I have a 80GB, 60GB and 2 40GB drives in a Antec server case full tower, with an Antec 350 Watt power supply... I have a computer with a 1.99GB hard drive, which is not big enough for my family. I have a Maxtor 2GB one that I would like to put in as a slave. On the Maxtor it reads

Master/Single On
Slave Off
Jumper J20

where do I put the jumpers to make the Maxtor the slave drive? And do I have to put jumpers on the one that is in the computer already to make it the Master? Thanks.

Answer:Jumpers on Maxtor Hard Drive

Leave the jumper off totally. Depending on the first one, what brand it is, you may have to change that jumper. It should already be jumpered as master. Hook this one up, pop into the bios setup and see if it appears.

Anyway, you have my sympathy and I hope you get over it, I guess no other hard drive will ever fill the boots of that old drive. Just kidding, nice little movie ( a bit slow on my dial-up though).

Check to make sure the drive is being detected correctly in the BIOS.
You should check the IDE/SATA and power connectors to the drive, to make sure they are not loose.

Find the manufacturer of your hard drive and run their Hard Drive Diagnostics Utility.

I beleive I may have a bad hard drive but thought I would try everything before coming to that conclusion. It is a 45gig hard drive. It started when I was unable to delete files, I would delete them and then after restarting the drive, they would show up again. I tried to reformat under two operating systems. I need FAT32 so on the XP OS I used CompuApps Swissknife to attempt to format. It showed that the format was successful after completion however none of the files were gone. Next, I took it into a Windows 98 and tried FDisk. Fdisk couldn't get past "checking drive's integrity" It would stay at 0% forever. I wasn't even able to get a letter assignment for the drive on 98. Trying Swissknife on 98, accomplished the same thing on XP. Said it was completed but never got assigned letter and when drive was restarted the volume it said it had created was gone. I can only imagine the drive is done for. Any Ideas?

All bios's on both OS recognized the drive properly.

Thanks

A couple of months ago I bought a new computer, which has a Maxtor 120gb Serial Boot Drive and 2 x Maxtor 250gb IDE Drives (Raid 1) for Video and Photos Files - Windows XP and all software is installed on the boot drive. However, over the last month, I have noticed the increase noise from my Raid Drives, especially when working with larger files. Is it true from what colleagues have told me that Maxtor is not known for producing quiet drives. Also, the company who built my computer, did recommend Western Digital, but I asked for the Maxtor as they were ATA133 drives and not ATA100 (Western Digital).Do I just have to put with the noise (although not competing with a noisy washing machine, it does get annoying when you are trying to concentrate / work with large phone and video files?

I'm trying to recover data from a functioning Maxtor 33073U4.   It is formatted Fat32 and running Windows 98.  I removed the J50 jumper (and another horizontal jumper that I'm not quite sure why it was there) and hooked it up as the slave.  My master is a Hitachi HDt722525DLAT80 running Windows XP Media Center Edition, SP3 with NTFS file system. The drive is visible in the boot menu, however when i try to boot from it I receive an error message "himem.sys is working improperly (error 502)" and I can get no further.  While in Windows XP, i  cannot see the drive in My Computer, as there is no drive letter assigned to it.  I can see it in Disk Management, and when i right click on the drive, my only option is to "Delete partition".I really want to recover my personal data from this hard drive before i discard it, is there anyway i can get to it without reformatting this Maxtor drive? Also, I only have a CD drive, no floppy drive and practically no experience with MSDOS or boot disc. The problem is that the jumper on this HD has come off and I dont know where to put it back on correctly.

I have a Maxtor Diamond Max 10 6V300f0. The only refernece to the jumper settings is in the MAXTOR PDF manual, which states:
"To ensure proper operation of your drive, do not use the jumper pins to the right of the SATA interface cable."
http://www.maxtor.com/_files/maxtor/...tion_guide.pdf

Furthermore, the PDF shows only 3 pins in the diagram , wheres my HD has 4 pins.

Can anybody enlighten me? Its stupid, cos the manual says how great this SATA drive is cos you dont have to worry about jumper settings for slave, master , CS etc, and yet theyve given me a another set of jumpers to figure out - just when i was getting my head around the last lot!

Check the documentation that came with the Hard drive.

You more than likely have the limiting jumper installed on the back of it. Once you remove it you will get the full capacity (assuming you have SP1a or SP3 installed also)

About 6 months ago I installed a 500-Gig Maxtor External HD I use as a "back-up" source. When I first installed it, it worked fine. Then I had a system crash and had to re-install WindowsXP Pro. Now this external drive is not recognized. A drive icon is also not displayed in My Computer.

In System Hwde Devices, there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the (Maxtor 500-Gig) USB Mas Storage Device. I have made several attempts to uninstall this drive and re-install it but the same identical message appears each time: Mass Storage Device Not Recognized.

I'm also getting a Code 39 error code informing me that the drivers for this device are either missing or corrupted.

Some time ago I was told that I would have to uninstall and re-install Windows XP Pro if I wanted to correct this issue. Is this true?

Hi guys, hoping to pick your collective brains on this one as I'm awaiting a reply from Maxtor/Seagate's email help. My maxtor 3200 series external hard drive won't power on properly anymore. When it worked, once the power cord was connected you could hear thew hard drive whirr into life, and the green light at the front of the unit would emit a solid, bright glow. At the moment, there are no noises whatsoever emanating from the unit, and the front light only flashes, very faintly and intermittently. I've tried two power cables, both of which work on other paraphanalia I've got lying around and I get the same results; so my presumption is that the unit itself is at fault. What does everyone reckon? Could the flashing faint light be something as simple as a loose power connection? Or is it indicative of a more serious problem? Further - whats the likelihood of being able to retrieve data from a knackered external hard drive if the worst has happened? Thanks, Dom

Answer:Maxtor external hard drive problem

No noises whatsoever would indicate the drive is dead. Though possibly a loose connection within the drive casing. As for data recovery, that is another thing altogether. It depends on how valuble the data is to you and whether is is worth the expense (very expensive) of employing a firm who specialise in this field.

I bought this a few months ago on the recommendation of someone in this forum.Despite my difficulties with the Retrospect software, it appears to work well, and quite quickly, given that my PC only has USB1.1.However, there are a couple of things that make me a little nervous. The first is that there are times when the drive is powered down and yet emits quite a loud buzzing noise (and the vibrations can be felt in both the keyboard and my desk), although most of the time it is fairly quiet. There seems to be no reason why it should suddenly become noisy when powered down - I do not recall it making this noise when it is actually backing up.Secondly, I still use floppy discs for backing up small files. I notice that, when doing so, the Maxtor powers up, even though I have not taken action to do this.Any thoughts from Maxtor owners, please?

I have a Maxtor External Hard drive....80GB Model 5000LE.
A While back I had a "device error" and searched the web to try to solve it. I guess from what I remember it had something to do with a bad file and it took too long to open up the file in the drive and it timed out or something. Anyway....I defragmented the drive and ran scan disk...problem solved..some files were deleted....kind of upset but not a big deal. Well, it happened again. This time instead a a specific file I could not get into (all these were mp3's and music videos etc...) the main folder (Ex:Jenna's Music and Videos) It kept on timing out......there are over 4000 music files in there. About 40 GB's worth. I couldn't even open the main file. SOOOOO I ran scan disk....defragmented...only this time when I finished the whole folder is gone!! I right click on the drive and it still says the space is being used but I cannot find my music/video files??? I ran file search and everything but I don't know where they are???? HELP!! Are these lost for good? If so...something is taking up the space correct??? No clue what is going on. Thanks.
Jenna

The thing is that I'm really fed up with the heat it gives off..

When the hard drive is on full load...the enclosure gets pretty hot...

However , often times ...many drive errors appear like partition corruption probably due to the heating of the hard drive..

Is there anything I could do to make it cooler or etc?

I regret buying a drive from Maxtor

Hi,

My Maxtor External Drive became corrupted and I needed to re-format the drive.

Unfortunately, while Working in Windows XP I accidentally deleted the partition and the drive.

Now I can't get Windows XP to recognize the Maxtor Drive. I tried re-booting the PC and plugging in the Maxtor USB Cable, but this did not work. The Maxtor Drive was my H: Drive.

Can anyone help me get Windows to recognize my Maxtor Drive?

When I deleted the drive I was working in the "Computer Management" Screen.

I navigated to this screen through the following path: Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Answer:Installing Maxtor External Hard Drive

The drive should show in Control Panel/Administrative Tools/computer mangement/disk management, but without a drive letter.
Right click the drive and click add partition.
Then right click it and click format.
Formatting will take a while.

Hello, I've recently done a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and one of my harddrives is not showing up correctly. The harddrive itself is my Local Disk D, it hasn't got any system files on it however it is displaying at the wrong size:

The problem lies in the fact that on boot my Computer's BIOS detects the harddrive as a 233GB harddrive. This is not a problem as I understand that the harddrive itself isn't the exact size as what it says on the box, however the Windows 7 installation and Windows itself only detects the harddrive as being 148gb.

What I've Tried Doing:
I've tried different things to resolve this issue. I've looked at the Disk Management, but there are no extra partitions and I've also looked at the harddrive in Partition Manager which again only picked up 149gb and no unallocated space.
I've run a partition recovery tool in Partition Manager which did not detect any lost partitions containing the rest of the harddrive.
My System:

Answer:IDE Maxtor 250gb Hard drive Problem.

Hello samboyd93. Welcome to the forum.

The only thing I can think of is that the drive is set as a SATA2 drive on an older computer that only does SATA1 (please fill in your "My System Specs" to help avoid these kinds of guesses) although I doubt it.

If you look at the back of the HDD there are jumper pins. Setting a jumper sets the SATA speed on most drives. You may need to consult the HDD's documentation to see what the different jumper positions do. Every manufacturer has a different setup.

I would try setting the drive as SATA1 to test. But both drives should be at the same setting. Also try plugging the problem drive into a different port or using a different SATA cable. Can't hurt, might help.

You should also go into your BIOS and check the settings for that drive and compare them to the settings for the other drive. They should be the same.

Hope that helps.

I have a Maxtor 5000 LE 80gb external hard drive using a USB
interface that I use for storing backup copys of my system. I
would like to be able to use this as a second hard drive when
I am surfing the net or downloading new programs. Is it possible to have my system set up in a way that it would ask me which
drive I would like to access to gain access to my stored programs
and stay in that drive until I request a switch back to my main
drive, which is slowly filling up. I hope I have made my request
clear and look forward to receiving whatever input I get, thanks.

Frank.

Answer:Maxtor 5000 LE External hard drive.

You should be able to that without any problem. Whenever you install a program you are usually given an option of what drive you want to install to; just select the new drive.

Same goes for downloading files, on the Save To screen just select the drive letter corresponding the the external drive and save it there. You can create folders by using My Computer on the drive.

hi, i just sucessfully installed my maxtor 80 gigs as my primary slave, and now, i want to change it to primary master(boot master). but im not sure if i should do that coz i dont wanna mess up my pc. is there gonna be a difference?? will my computer loads faster for gaming and video?? what will happen to all my programs in my old hard drive? will they work properly?? should i change it???? just pm me, cool? thankz

Answer:Installing maxtor 80 gigs hard drive

Nerdandfreak.. if you want to make the new hard drive master , then you will need to install operating system . Once you got the OS up and running and using windows XP ., use the file transfer wizzard which should take most of your programs and files from the old hard drive to the new one.
And if you want to make it master , will need to use the "jumper " to make it master ( look in the instructions which came with the hdd how to make it master < if you bought the hdd in a retail box , otherwise go to www.maxtor.com and under the support will get info about it >
The advantage of the new hard drive would be "faster loading times, " better transfer rate and more reliable ( sorta..)

I am having problems with the external HD on my PC.
Yesterday I pulled out the cable from it to the PC by mistake. When I re-started the PC a black screen came up with a message saying that NTFS (I think) wasn't working and it needed to scan or check for something. I glanced through the message briefly and it was on a countdown unless I tapped any key on the keyboard. I reached to do this too late and a speedy roll of delete something or other continuously scrolled up. I ended up turning off the PC manually to stop this.
I haven't a clue what it is or what it did, but the PC is now crawling along. The external hard-drive is showing empty, but I can access all the files on it. The problem is that the files are not happy being moved, copied or attached to emails. When I go to the image files they will not show icons without contacting administrator. All sorts of other stuff has probably happened that I don't know about.
IE is at a snail's pace and then seizes and 'not responding'.
Help!!!!

Answer:Maxtor External Hard Drive problems

I would try running the chkdsk /r command on the drive.

Go to My Computer, select the drive, right-click on it, select Properties.

Follow the instructions under Starting Check Disk at http://www.hard-drive-help.com/chkdsk.html , putting check marks in both options.

Louis
