I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Hello, I went through the process of cleaning my mouse while the monitor was off and I'm fairly sure I clicked something maybe I shouldn't have but after that the whole keyboard was messed up..
E shows up as ]
D shows up as ''
Esc, start, [ , n, y, I, F1-F12 keys don't register, among a few others..
Things I've tried so I don't waste anyones time.. [Windows 7]
Changed Location, Keyboard Layout (English - US) is the only language
Ctrl - Shift x1/2, Alt - Shift x1/2, and pretty much any other variant I could think of.
Plugged another keyboard in, same thing.
Plugged keyboard in another computer, works like a charm.
Restarted, plugged and unplugged. Uninstalled and tried to update driver..
Nothing worked so far, hopefully you can can make something happen.
Thanks in advance.
Hi,
Apologies for what is probably a stupid question.
I have a Tecra A2 and run XP proffesional.
Suddenly some of the keys are typing symbols different to those indicated on the keys.
Pleeeeze tell me how to reset the keyboard to default.
With thanks, Danny.
Hi mate,
it could be that you have a wrong keyboard map. A keyboard map is like a draft for your hardware which identfies which char is displayed when you hit a key on your keyboard.
Keyboard maps a depending which language you use so if the symbols on the screen do not match the input of your typing then it could be that a wrong keyboard map is set.
In such case you will have to set another keyboard language.
To change the keyboard map you must do the following:
Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Regional and Language options -> Click on the Tab "Languages" -> Details -> Choose your input language which matches your keyboard
Good luck and nice weekend
Well about a week ago my laptop keyboard started to act funny when I tired to backspace random signs, or random actions would happen, when I tried to use the space bar it wouldn't give me a space it might give me a d or a / or c, n and when I pressed enter it wouldn't work either then a few days ago the letters started not to work either. They all started to do random things like H might disconnect my Internet or it might Brighton the screen and I have tried every single thing I read about and nothing sometimes my keyboard works perfectly fine and sometimes it gets crazy, I scanned my laptop to see if it was a virus but nothing, I looked to see if it was the keyboard not working but the computer said that the devise was working perfectly fine. I have a Dell Inspiron M5010 Windows Home Premium 7 I have also pretty much uninstalled basically everything I didn't need or use on my laptop that I have downloaded to see if it might have been one of those but it wasn't. I really need help. Thank you

That is most likely a virus, you need to run a full scan with your antivirus and make sure it isn't compromised. I would also recommend you move this to the malware forum, then you will get it touch with people that are certified to help you with this.
today morning,I downloaded webex for a meeting. After few seconds my Webex page is stuck. I restarted the system. Later i find some of the keys on the right side of the laptop keyboard is not giving the rightletters. My system is loaded with Windows Vista Business. Have Norton as antivirus. I uninstalled the keyboard driver and installed still not working. Someone help me out in this problem.

This is a laptop Advanta brand. After keyboard crush I exchange for another one. Part of the keys working fine, part not. Some of them shows upper marks, which usually goes with Shift. Other shows numbers instead of letters. Totally mess.
I connected regular keobard just for the test and works fine.
Is this a keyboard problem? (Seller assures 100% work ) Or rather computer system?
What eventually I can check?
I know that this happens by hitting CTRL rather than Shift, but how is it fixed? (see - that should have been a question mark not an accented E)
Where do you live? What keyboard do you have? Who else uses your computer? Please look at this:http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/k/keyblayo.htmAnd this:http://www.computerhope.com/help/keyboard.htmIn other parts of the world the keyboard layout is different. For example, in South America a Latin keyboard layout is common. You may have accidentally installed a keyboard layout for a different region. How to change your keyboard layout Does that seem to be the problem?
1 more repliesWhen I use the spacebar / appears. When I press return # appears, when I use the back delete button a [ appears. How can I restore the usual setting?I have done a system restore, switched the laptop on and off. It has not restored the usual keyboard. I have tried all the function keys. Please could someone help me with a solution to restore the keyboard's usual settings. Thanks
This just started suddenly? No spilling of any liquid or other "abuse" of the computer? It sounds to me like the keyboard gets the wrong signals - not even enabling num lock or anything of the kind should result in such behavior - the space bar, return and back key are all pretty much the same on all keyboard-types - unless you've installed some sort of key-remapper (which is highly unlikely, given you've done a system restore) - which makes me wonder - have you run a keyboard test from the BIOS/startup diagnostic? Most likely it's a shot keyboard, given that no abuse has taken place - run the diagnostic test on the keyboard, and see what turns up.

Hello all i have been having a problem off and on with my keyboard on my asus laptop, sometimes when i press the L key i get a/ instead and when i press the o key i get yt instead of O, I don't really know what is wrong with or making it do that, it is annoying. Sometimes when I hold the shift key for a few seconds and turn on the filter keys and then turn them right back off it goes away but comes back later, has anyone else had this problem, or know what i should do to fix it? Any help would be appreciated. I am running windows 7 on the laptop and purchased it new in feb 10
"purchased it new in feb 10"It should still be under warranty...sounds like you have a hardware problem and I would contact them immediately and request service on the laptop. Just make sure to save all your important docs and files before sending it away.Chances are they may reformat your drive and lose all, or they will replace the keyboard and still set it back to a factory installation.Too many people send their laptops off and lose all their valuable files not knowing ahead of time.Good LuckSome HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers

Are you using a laptop or a desktop system?
I have a Equium L-20, just bought it and every so often it is missing characters while typing, these are random, it isn?t as if certain keys are sticking can go through and type the alphabet and every 2 or 3 times it will miss letters or characters out as if I hadn?t pressed the keys, also the space bar can miss now and again.
Would this be a keyboard fault or software, it?s kind of got me puzzled and almost to point of returning it for a replacement.
During this short post it missed 4 letters out, had to check it and fill in the blanks
Hi
Well, I have read some topics about the similar issues in this forum and I think it?s not a keyboard drive problem. In my opinion it?s something wrong with the keyboard hardware or with the cable connection.
I think the best way is to contact the ASP for the detailed informations. If the warranty is valid, all replacements will be done for free.

My laptop keeps typing numbers as opposed to letters on certain keys.
I have run my antivirus programme and it is clear ? I am running Windows XP.
Any ideas as to what to do? I have checked the languages and all seems ok there. I have run my spyware and privacy guardian. All reports clear.
Basically, I am now stuck as to what else to try........
Hope someone can help.
Hi,
Many laptop keyboards have a section which can be used for numeric data entry only.
These keys are normally just a block of the main QWERTY keyboard and accessed by using a Function key.
You have probably got the keyboard into this "mode"

I just found this online this is what my keyboard is doing
This has been happening every other day for me recently where I will be typing and my keyboard will randomly start typing the wrong letters or pressing certain keys will open the menu bar, but my computer to sleep or just type completely random letters. I've googled it once before and found that I should change the settings in control panel > regional and language settings which worked for me once but lately it doesn't.
I've even purposely added a foreign language and then re added my normal one (UK) but hasn't helped, it was already on the proper settings anyway. The last two times it has happened was on the night and left my keyboard unplugged, the next day I plugged my keyboard back into the tower while the computer was still loading up and it has been working fine now and did the same again last night. I don't know why it does this? Also google suggested a FN key but my keyboard doesn't have one.
Hello welcome to TSF! Have you tried another keyboard?
2 more repliesMost of the letters come out ok, but some of the keys writes wrong letters e.g. key with letter 'I' gives '5', 'O' gives '6', etc. And it's not the problem of keyboard layout, it's U.S. English and never been changed to another one. Problem persist in each application including command prompt. OS is XP Pro. Norton didn't detect any virus. Anyone has a clue?

8 more repliesMy mother's computer started having issues with the keyboard, recently. I'll say it how i see it, but obviously, i might be missing something.
When typing the letter q on the keyboard, "qt" comes up. w and e are fine, r types "re". This happens with two different keyboards. I brought by my (this) keyboard, and it worked fine, but i only tried for a minute. On her computer, i tried both a ps2 and usb keyboard (native for both, no adapters).
Right now, if i try to login, when i click on a user, it fills in the password field (as if there was a stuck key) and tells me the caps lock is on. Capslock button does turn it off, but it did not look like backspace was doing anything. The bios did not complain of a stuck button. Safe mode (i happened to try with networking) has the same issue. No issue using the keyboard before windows loads.
Using teamviewer from my computer to hers is tough. I can hit capslock with sometimes works, keys sometimes work and sometimes don't, if it types in two letters, i can use the mouse to highlight one (to overwrite) when continuing. With a lot of effort and time i can login. Clicking icons on the desktop does not work, from the start menu does.
I tried hitting the helper menu to get the on screen keyboard for logging on. The first time i tried, it came up and worked. Now the button doesn't do anything.

It is necessary for you to replace the keyboard. It is not sending the correct signals to the motherboard. Yes, even a notebook computer has a replacable keyboard. It's a job best assigned to a qualified computer technician, to find and order a compatible keyboard, and to disassemble the laptop far enough to be able to swap the keyboard.

Instead the buttons do other functions, like minimizing or maximizing the current window when I need to type something. It seems like everytime I restart the Windows, it solves the problem. Did you set your keyboard language to US or UK.
Go into the control panel and click Regional and Language Options, click the Languages tab, click Details button, then check in the box to make sure English (United Kingdom) and under Keyboard you have United Kingdom. If this is what you prefer.

Hi there, and thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer! This problem is really frustrating because I have important things I need to do asap and I am prevented from doing them.
EDIT: It seems the problem is exclusive to Firefox... I never use IE so I didn`t think to check until now, but yup, it`s just Firefox.
The problem is my keyboard. I was just posting in a discussion forum and going to hit the square bracket again to quote someone. But I think I hit something at the same time as pressing that key, as I was going for the A key but instead I hit around the shift key. So I think I hit the square bracket key plus the shift key or something around there, at once. Or perhaps a combination of three keys.. or perhaps this has nothing to do with the problem at all.. or for all I know I have a virus (although I have been scanning a lot lately and all seems clean). exclamation mark: oh, apparently this still works! lol

Hello Bleeping Computer people!
Computer with the problem is a desktop. HP Pavilion Model number a4327c-b. Windows 7.
My problem: Keyboard keys unexpectedly stop tying text and instead, pressing a key, activates a function.
For example typing the F key opens the File menu. Tested with a second keyboard and had the same problem. Problem started unexpectedly, without warning. Problem occurs when surfing the web and playing free online games at MSN and other popular sites.
Mouse works. Norton Security Suite working.
Temporary fix: Opened the On Screen Keyboard and pinned it to Task Bar. Opening and minimizing the On Screen Keyboard fixes the problem for a few minutes but then the problem reoccurs. Problem seems to reoccur when surfing the web and playing free online games at MSN and other popular sites.
Descriptions: Of how the problem effects these programs:
Outlook: Can’t open New Message. When forwarding an email can’t address it or type text. Keyboard keys act as if they are function keys. For example typing F opens the File Menu. Other keys open other Outlook functions/menus.
Word 2007: Can’t type in a Document. Type F key and Office Button opens. Other keys activate other Word functions.
Internet Explorer: In all Search boxes, can’t type. F key opens File menu. Other keys effect other menus.
Thank you for any help you can provide,

6 more repliesHiA group of keys in one area of my laptop have all of a sudden started typing numbers instead of their correct letters. Laptop is only 6 months old and all other keys work fine. I have shut down and restarted but just the same.Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks
Make/model of laptop - and, what group of keys? I am only guessing, but perhaps there is a way of using a certain group of keys as a Number Pad on your laptop if it does not already have a Number Pad on the keyboard.
4 more repliesSuddenly as of this morning multiple keys on my laptop type their own key but also other characters. It mostly is just additional symbols rather than letters and tends to be the characters next door which they type.
For example:
1) typing 'p' gives 'p['
2) typing '0' gives '0-'
3) typing '-' gives '0-' also
4) typing '.' gives './'
5) typing '/' gives './' also
6) typing ';' gives ';''
7) and vice versa
Also num pad is not working!
So in short it's like a number of adjacent keys have become fused to each other.
I have tested this and it occurs in all programs and windows. On screen keyboard works fine though.
I have so far uninstalled the device driver rebooted and let it reinstall - changed nothing.
Can anybody help?
Thanks
Henry
Do you have another keyboard you can plug in and try? That will tell you if it's the keyboard (problem will not show with replacement) or the keyboard-to-PC interface (problem will persist with replacement). If you don't have an extra yourself, maybe you can borrow one from a friend /family/colleague/neighbor...?

Hi, my Down Arrow key, Spacebar and Backspace does not work as intended.
Down Arrow: Pressing it moves the cursor down at the same time inserts a space where it was in the beginning
Spacebar: Inserts space and brings the cursor down (only if characters are present below)
Backspace: Can not delete by long pressing but instead has to press every single time.
What could be the possible cause? Hardware or software? Can editing the registry bring about a solution?
Thank You
I am having a problem where my keyboard displays the wrong keys. For example, the "K" key displays "2" and the "P" key displays "." It is mostly on the right side of my keyboard and mostly numbers interfering.
I have attempted to adjust the regional settings but they are all set properly. Also I tried to update/reinstall the keyboard and its drivers and that did not help either.
Please someone help soon, I am using a different computer to submit this or I wouldnt be able to type this out properly. The computer with the problem is a laptop so I have not attempted to use another keyboard on it but im sure that wont solve this issue.
The keyboard keys are Correct as far as I can tell pre-login when I type my password to login to windows the keys work fine. After logging in is when some of the keyboard keys start acting up.
Sounds like your Number Locks is on.(Num LK)
Typically you can turn it off by pressing the Num Lk key, or by using a key sequence - ctrl + Num Lk.
Depends on the make and model of the laptop. Do you see a Num Lk key?
If you still have problems, let us know the make and model of your laptop.
Greetings, I am having a strange issue with my Lenovo Y560p laptop. The keys are not typing the correct letters: For example the "y" key types "{}", the "n" key opens "file" tab, and the "m" key indents sentences or takes me to the beginning of the sentence but also sometimes types "><" and vertical bar.Potentially helpful information:Laptop keys are not dirty, or wet, no spills occurred.Sticky keys is not onI use an external usb keyboard and it works fine (currently doing this to type)I have updated and replaced all keyboard drivers, didnt helpI am using Windows 7 OSI recently moved from the US to Europe (perhaps electricity differences could be a factor?)Num Lock is not onthe keys work properly when I hit them very hard, this is obviously not sustainable or reasonable as I have to hit them quite hardThis issue only happens with a few keys, specifically "y n m" most notably. It is my conclusion that with my limited knowledge it is some sort of keyboard short. Is this reasonable? Please help me remedy this very annoying problem.
Looks like I have stumped the experts? :-/

3 more repliesHi,
I have a VAIO FE11M, which was working fine when I first got it.
I then installed an external keyboard (which works fine), but now the VAIO built-in keyboard is typing in FN mode. For instance, if I try to type an "L", i get a "3" instead, or if I try to type "hello", i get "he336".
I thought this was a driver issue, but I uninstalled the Microsoft Keyboard software I put on the machine when I first connected the external keyboard, and the weird thing is that the external keyboard is still working fine, but the VAIO one isn't.
I've also gone into Control Panel, Keyboards, and tried to look at language settings - but I don't have a "language" tab in there. I've had a quick look in Regional Settings, but all looks ok there too.
Any ideas? It's driving me mad having to keep one finger on the FN key when I want to use the alpha characters on my VAIO keyboard!
Please disregard. Problem has been fixed.
Nevermind guys. The problem has been fixed. I will post again if I have anymore problems. -Thanks.
Ben! delete this post if you have plms solved!

Run Factory Recovery but be aware that it will delete any files that you've saved on drive 'C'.
5 more repliesHello everyone!
Some days ago, I locked my laptop and went to a meeting, after I came back I wanted to enter my password but some keys weren't working, I tried with a USB keyboard, same problem! so i tried on-screen keyboard but I had same problem again!!!!!!
so I restarted my laptop again and again, suddenly it worked, but today I have same problem again, same keys don't work again. I restarted many times, few times it's working, but many times I face same problem again. I have to lock my laptop many times and this is a big problem for me.
My Laptop model: ASUS K556U
My USB keyboard: CANYON
Windows: 10 64 bit
I have a Dell M1330 Laptop that has served me quite well for several years. I just replaced the keyboard the other day and everything is working fine, except that the new keyboard has a slightly different layout than the old keyboard did. For example, with the new keyboard all the F1, F2, F3, etc.. keys have function secondaries on them like multimedia, brightness, antennae toggle, and so on. My old keyboard didnt have most of these and so when I attempt to use them on the new keyboard they simply do not work. In fact when I use function keys as if I still had my old keyboard installed the functions work, which means it is the software interpretation of the keys that I need to change. Does anybody know how I can fix this so that the keys of the new keyboard and functions match what the keys actually say?
Another thing to add is that some of the new function keys on the new laptop such as antennae toggle were not on my last keyboard at all because they are softkeys on the case of my computer, and I am not sure a function like that would be able to be added to the keyboard mapping at all, but I'm not sure.
Also, I would prefer to not install third party software to accomplish this, even if it means I need to delve into the registry manually. Can anybody help??
You might try holding the 'fn' key while you tap the fnumber key.

I had a problem with my laptop which is certain key on my keyboard is not functioning. The weird is, it happened without a reason. because after I shutdown doing my work when I turn it on again, I discovered my "s", "d", "g", "h", "\", "m", " left shift", "caps lock" and "~" key did not work at all. I try taking the key off, cleaning underneath, but nothing seems to be working. After that I try to use usb keyboard and it seems the key can be entered. So I thought my hardware is the problem. than I replace into the new one, but still having the same problem. I already waste my money buying new keyboard. Does any one happen to know what sort of problem this is and how I would go about fixing it? Is it related to the registry. My laptop is Acer aspire 4740G, ram 4GB, processor i3 2.4GHz. I hope someone can help me to solve this problem.
I have an old Dell inspiron e1505 laptop. When the login screen appears I am unable to login because my keyboard is typing incorrect characters.
HI, and welcome to TSG...
You may have the Num lock on. Its located at the top-right of the keyboard above the F11 key. If it is on, there should be one of the four indicator lights illuminated to the left of the power button. The first on, actually.
Good luck..
I have had my del laptop for about a year and a half. everything has ben fine, but earlier today, my cat walked acros the keybaord, and now, as you may be able to se, it won't alowe me to type double leters or even backspace. i've given up trying to corect my typing so i apologize for the erors. i did some research and found some people with similar prolbems, but they were al with newer laptops. ive never had this problem before and i am prety sure it's the result of my cat probably hiting a key or something. regardles, i do not know how to fix it. i cant scrol using the aros, type properly, or even backspace. i can't even highr my volume. can anyone help me?
First try System restore to any date before the incident (preferably a few days or a week). If that does not work, uninstall the keyboard in device manager and restart, that should allow windows to reinstall the drivers. The cat probably hit a strange combination of keys like ctrl+Shift+something else and you could look all day and not find the options to correct it directly. One of these should help. In the future, put the system into sleep if you walk away for a few minutes (or close the lid), Hibernate if for longer, and shut down for hours or overnight. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
4 more repliesMy Toshiba satellite is only typing aeiou accented on top, tried using on screen keyboard, but that is not typing anything at all. Updated from Windows7, to Windows10

4 more repliesHi all, I have a laptop that has had a drink spilt over the keyboard, I managed to get to the logon screen, but can't enter the users password as it just types whatever it wants.
If I plug in an external usb keyboard, will this overide the laptop keybord and I'll be able to type?
Just looking for a temporary solution before i get the keyboard replaced.
Thank
my keyboard is typing " instead of @ when hitting shift and 2
You should have a language bar, either somewhere on the screen or minimised next to the tray icons.- Right click on it and select settings. It should show the keyboard set up currently used by your computer (probably set to UK).- Click on 'add..' then select the country/keyboard set up you want, in this case english (USA) - US- Make sure the one you want as default is at the top of the list by selecting it and clicking 'move up'This should solve your problem.

Hello! I had the same problem! The "Num Lk" key activates the numeric keyboard (blue characters). The "Fn" (Function Key) will turn it off, or vice-versa (can't remeber exactly)! Anways, just press the "num lk" and the "fn" key and it should return to normal!
this is what happens when I press the period key: .56-mvxzc
the l key repetitively: l7l79ljl7l79l7l7sad
the o key: oqe or orwqe depending on how long I hold it downm

Hi and Welcome to TSF!
Do you have a secondary keyboard to try?
My friend is having a keyboard problem on his laptop. Basically words a read with numbers in between. Examples include:
o9o9h e3r4m

no9thng hap0p0e3ni8ng
Any help gratefully appreciated.
1) My 2 year old ACER Aspire 5 keyboard just stop working in a couple of capacities. First, the numbers on the 10 key wouldn't type at all. Checked Num Lock, fine, then tried to type numbers at top of keyboard, well, some typed the right number but most didn't or typed more than one number.
2) Ran Webroot Anti-spyware and Anti-Virus, clean. Then I shook my computer to see if any crumbs or foreign materials were throwing something off, clean. Took out battery, nada.
3) Restored computer to the day before any problems. Changed nothing. Pressed every key to see if something was stuck or key broken. None.
4) The Delete, Backspace, Enter and Space Bar do NOT work at all. So basically, the entire keyboard is not working due to something. If I type any one key, some of them type what I wanted but continue to type the letter or number until I log out of my Google Engine.
5) I have always had issues with the keyboard. I will be typing along and the cursor will randomly go back to previous sentences and start typing what I am currently typing. It is so annoying. Why is it hopping all over the place?
6) A computer major friend who teaches computer classes said to write to Google and maybe I would find others with similar problems. I found several "sticky keys" problems but none on point with none of the keys working or working properly. He suggested perhaps a Trojan Horse virus but my sweeps come up clean...
7) Can anyone help me???
Thank you,
Shawnascy

It could be a virus. But It also could just be your keyboard is bad. You may need to take it to your local repair shop if it. Is a laptop and have them check the keyboard out for you. I really do not think it is a virus.
I have a Lenovo Y50-70 laptop, purchased last December. Just this past week, I've had an issue with the PC settings menu popping up randomly when type n the keyboard. I haven't made a connection with a particular keystroke combination, but it's very distracting (it just did this in the middle of the word "distracting, after the first t). At first I thought it might be because my wrist hits the keypad a lot when typing, but I'm certain it wasn't this time. I have windows 8.1 as the operating system.
More repliesI knocked over a small glass of water on my laptop last night, most of the water skirted off. I dried the computer by taking the keyboard out, opening the case from one side and using a hairdrier on low.
Here are the problems: Keyboard is typing by itself, types double letters/number and some keys dont work at all. I tried reseating the cable, but this did not help the problem.
Power - The main power button does not work. I can get the pc to power on by taking the battery out, unplugging the power cord from the back, then plugging it back in. If the battery is in or the pc has been shut down without the battery installed and with the power cord in, the pushing the power button does not power on the pc.
Please let me know how I can approach fixing these problems.
and the laptop is HP? anyway, we need the model name.
what would you do if you spilled some liquid on keyboard?
1. shut off the unit immediately!(that means, plug out AC cord and battery as faster as you can).
2. turn it upside down(if it's possible open it and lay it on the table upside down, thus the liquid won't spill LCD module).
3. after some time, start to disassemble it fully and clean inside the laptop.
in your case, the liquid is already damaged power chains inside the laptop, and you'll have to fully disassemble it and clean!
Hi,

Welcome to the Seven Forums.
It is not hard to replace the keyboard.
See these search results for pricing and "hot to" videos.
The "United States-International" keyboard layout option is supposed to let you type accents by pressing the right-alt key at the same time as ' " ~ ` or ^ followed by the letter you want to accent. For some reason on my computer the right-alt key does not work for this purpose, but left-alt and left-shift do. Unfortunately this is conflicting with all sorts of things so I really need to figure out how to get it to work with the right-alt key as it is supposed to. I have no idea what could be causing this problem so I don't know what other information to include. Any idea how to get this working properly for me?
More repliesI own a Lenovo 3000 y410 and as my title indicates it is constantly typing q even without touching the keyboard. This doesn't seem like it is a physical problem because i was able to take the key totally off ( so that there was nothing on the sensor), and clean this area with compressed air. Even while the key was not there the problem continued, so it is not just a jammed key or anything.Could this be some other issue? Thanks
More repliesI have an older Toshiba laptop- Satellite series- and two of the keys got knocked off. They are intact, so I was wondering if I can just super-glue them on, or is that incredibly dumb, stupid, don't I know that abcd......? How should I go about fixing these? I am NOT that handy with fixing things....thanks for any help!
Hi bj nick,
Perhaps this will help: Reinstalling a key on a Toshiba laptop.

I have been having problems lately with some of the keys on my laptop keyboard. Sometimes when I press some of the keys they won't work, and sometimes pressing a letter once will make it register twice in a Word document. The laptop is about 4 years old, and I know that you can't do anything really about a laptop KB since it's built in, but is there anything I could try to see if I can fix the problem? It doesn't happen all the time...maybe I just need to buy some KB cleaning supplies to try and get under the keys?
Thanks in advance..
I had a HP that had similar problems, and it was indeed a bad keyboard. Luckily for me it was still under warranty. For low tech cleaning, you might try some compressed air to blow out dust/hair etc around the keys. If it is a bad keyboard, you may be able to replace it yourself.
some of the keys wont work when i tap them on my laptop they just stop working now i have to use onscreen keyboard
This could be a driver problem with your computer. If has been recently updated to W7, then make sure that you have all proper drivers for your keyboard. However, chances are that you fried your keyboard (spilling something or other such instances have been known to do this). Try contacting your Laptop manufacturer.
2 more repliesPlease help me because I have been trying for 3 hours now and want to cry haha. I used my laptop last night and the cat did walk over it, as she usually does so it may have been something she has done or just a coincidence this has happened.
I just went to use my laptop tonight and could not log in because I noticed that my A key was not working which is in my password so used the onscreen key board, I then discovered probably half of my other keys also are not working!!!
I have uninstalled the keyboard in the device manager and nothing, I have even installed Unbuntu to see if it would work in there as one person suggested. I have turned the laptop off, took the battery and power cable out, held the power button for 60 seconds, put it all back together and started it up, nothing.
I have stolen my boyfriends keyboard from his desktop PC and that is working fine. I just do not know what to try next if anything or if to just go ahead and back my stuff up and reinstall windows (using windows 10).
I do not understand why it is only some keys as surely if it was the actual keyboard then it all would not be working which is why I think it might be a windows thing maybe, but then why does the USB keyboard work fine.
Thanks for any help and let me know if you need anymore information
Help! I have a new laptop and seven keys have stopped responding. The keys are 0), -_, pP, [{, ;:, '", /? (I am on my old laptop) I called windows support and we did the selective start up and the keys started responding and then when I tried to use it again the keys stopped responding. I have taken out the battery and took off the key caps and made sure there was no trash. I know nothing about computers but do some crazy things. If anyone knows about laptops I would like any information you can provide. Thank you
If it is still under warranty, I'd stop fussing with it (save yourself the aggrevation) and return it to the place where you purchased it. Let them figure it out.
Since a couple of hours ago, every time I press certain keys on my laptop (A Samsung satellite), instead of a single letter I get a two letter combination. Also, I can not backspace these letters individually. I have to hold it down and then it deletes the the whole two letter combination. The shift key, q key and backspace all seem to be a bit buggy. I've restarted several times with no difference.
Combinations: W=SW E=CE R=RT T=RT Y=UY U=UY I=KI O=O[ P=;P [=O[ S=SW, F=FG G=FG H=JH J=JH K=KI L=L' ;=;P '=L' C=CE
As you can see, they seem to be paired but it's not every key on the keyboard. It's more or less impossible to use to the keyboard right now (this is with an external keyboard)
Thanks for any help.
I assume you have rebooted it already? In most cases that indicates a faulty keyboard, was something spilled on it?
Also, are you sure it's a Samsung Satellite and not a Toshiba Satellite?
Its hard cause they are scissor keys and dont have the spacing that standard keyboards have beteween the keys. Will a can of air work? Im not sure if the plastic tube will fit between to blow the dust out.
I occasionally turn it upside down and shake it like mad too, which helps.
I bought a laptop that has a horrible keyboard layout without noticing (the funny thing is i inquired about the tiniest detail in the laptop, yet i didn't notice the keyboard's layout).
Anyway, the problem is that next to my space bar there are "| \", "Ins", "Del" and "Alt Gr" keys (i'd really love to shoot the guy who made it). Now what i want to do is remap those buttons to this order : "Alt", Windows key, menu key, "right Ctrl", just like a standard keyboard. How can this be done?
I already tried KeyTweak, but it's not working. Is there any other good utility i can use? i'm using windows XP Home SP2 on my laptop btw.
any help is MUCH appreciated
Microsoft has a utility that works for 2K and XP, it's called REMAPKEY.EXE. It's part of this downloadable Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit, and will do the trick for you.
I have an HP DV9700T laptop. Is there a tech that reads this forum?
My (9 O L . ) buttons are dead on my laptop.
I ordered a new one & installed it. I still have the same problen.
A friend told me it may be a component (chip, diode, or resistor) on the MB that died.
There must be a tech that knows what controls these keys.
Any help, Please??

Have you tried an external keyboard? This will test whether your problem is with the keyboard, keyboard connector, or keyboard controller. Let us know how you get on.
Hi, for some reason some of the keyboard keys arent working, I didn't spill anything on them and they are not stuck. They are the spacebar, letters b n, forward slash, the three bottom arrow keys. My laptop is a dell inspiron 1525 and its a year old.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

HiI have an Advent Laptop which I bought from PC World only about 6 months ago.Since I've had it I have persistently had a problem with some (but not all) of the 'additional function' keys on the keyboard producing its 'function' symbol as oppose to just the ordinary symbol of that key.The laptop utilises Windows Vista Premuim as the OS.Has anybody else experienced such a problem? And does anybody have any solutions or suggestions for rectifiying this? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hard to say if software is the issue or if its the hardware itself. did you spill anything on the keyboard? As far as software goes, try restoring from a recovery point in the past when the keyboard was working. Click the Start button -> in search box type "system restore" hopefully this has been turned on. You can also try looking up the laptop on the manufactures website to see if there are any available updates for the keyboard or other firmware updates related to the keyboard or motherboard. I suggest you update all that you can. if still no good possible hardware issue; I would first try to re-seat the keyboards ribbon cable but this requires you taking apart your laptop if you're up to it.
The problem began almost a year ago where about three keys would sometimes work and sometimes not, but recently it became more persistent to the point where those three keys don't work at all anymore. Now more keys are starting to develop the initial problem (and soon will stop working entirely, also).

Carefully removed unresponsive keys from keyboard without damage including the plastic clip that snaps between the key and the laptop keyboard, and thoroughly cleaned with compressed air.

I dropped a bit of water on the keyboard - machine works fine BUT keys on the left side are sticky and the second problem is that it is so hard to put these keys back. I bought the laptop 2 days ago and I think I would exchange it.
Any advice regarding this problem - I would appreciate feedback about placing the keys back - it has been impossible to put them back - they do not snap - so frustrating - I think Dell beats HP heere
Thanks

If you removed the keys and cannot put them back, I think you are not eligible to exchange it as defective... you broke it. Please provide the manufacturer and model number so we can help you find a replacement keyboard and service information.

[email protected] further proof, check with a USB keyboard, if it is a problem of PC (software) or keyboard (hardware) being hardware will have to change the keyboard, if software must reset the computer to see if the problem is solved or update the BIOS. Regards.
