System lock up

Question: System lock up

My system intermittently locks up and needs to be restarted. I did think it was a bad install of my previous OS (server 2003) or maybe a virus or something but I have since upgraded my OS and the problem is still cropping up, although less frequently. There is no error report created to give an idea of what has failed and the event log is no more helpful.
Obviously I realise this is a really vague problem which could be down to a number of reasons, so is there a program around which could analyse what happens when it crashes?
Cheers for any help on the really frustrating problem,

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: System lock up

Microsoft says whenever a computer freezes or reboots (crashes) you need to run chkdsk
Start, my computer, right click on your hard drive, select properties, select tools, error checking click "check now"(chkdsk).

Overheating

Description

When your CPU overheats, it will usually cause your computer to reboot. Video card overheating causes artifacts to appear on your screen, and usually wont cause reboots.

Diagnostic

Enter BIOS upon powering on your computer. Most BIOs have a hardware monitor. Use this to check your temperatures and fan speeds.

There is also hardware monitoring software that can check your temperatures from Windows. Your hardware monitoring software should have come with your motherboard. If you have no monitoring software, you can go to www.cpuid.com and get PC Wizard. PC Wizard is an easy to use program that will let you know what kind of temperatures you have, and what your fan speeds are at.

Causes

CPU overheating is usually caused by a failing CPU fan or improperly applied thermal paste. Fortunately, these 2 causes are easy to fix. If the CPU fan is dead, buy a new one and install it. If the thermal paste is improperly applied, remove the old paste off and apply new paste.

Another method is to take a house fan and open the case blowing the fan on high into the case.
if this helps we know its heat.
Goto radio shack buy a can of PCB cleaner (printed circuit board) unplug computer for an hour, open case spray everything starting from top working down to the bottom make sure you get the cpu heatsink and video card really goods.
Power Supply (PSU) Problems

Description

It is important to have a functioning, proper size of PSU for your computer. Having an underpowered or failing PSU is often the cause for random reboots. To get an estimate of how powerful a PSU, use this PSU calculator and add about 50W to the minimum power the calculator gives you.

Diagnostic

The easiest and best way to diagnose a faulty PSU is to swap it with another one that you know is in good working order.

Causes

PSUs just die after a while.
RAM

Description

Faulty RAM and RAM slots can cause random errors/reboots.

Diagnostic

The best way to determine if RAM is your problem is to run your computer with one stick at a time, and see if the problem occurs for either stick. This obviously doesn't apply if you only have one stick to begin with Also, try the RAM in different slots. The actual slots might be causing RAM-failing like problems. The next step is to run memtest86 to determine if you have faulty RAM.

Hello! Since the most recent build of W-10 (9879), my caps lock, num lock, and scroll lock lights do not function on either computer on which I have W-10 installed (a desktop with a USB keyboard and a laptop with an integrated keyboard). The keys still work to correctly toggle the functionality, but the keyboard lights don't work. In case it matters, my keyboard's actual backlights and my mouse's internal light (not the laser, the internal LED) are working correctly, it's just the CL, NL, and SL indicators that don't function.

Anyone have any ideas for fixing this?

Answer:Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock lights no longer function

Welcome to Windows TenForums, Vaindil.

It doesn’t seem to work on anyone’s system and there doesn’t seem to be a fix yet. You can read here into the beginning of the next page if you like.

I'm using an HP Pavilion dv6000 Notebook series. I noticed that my Caps Lock LED is not working but its FUNCTION is working fine.. same goes with Scroll Lock. Here's the weird part.. when I press Num Lock ( function key + scroll lock ) the LED turns on! I already tried a system recovery, it didn't solve the issue. Is there something wrong with my BIOS? Any help from you guys will be highly appreciated.. thanks!

Answer:Caps lock & Scroll Lock LEDs not working but Num Lock is wor...

Sometimes electrical components needs to have all power sources removed and reintroduced to work properly.  Try performing a hard reset first, if it doesn't work then try updating your BIOS.  If neither works...It's pretty much dead and not worth fixing.  To Perform A Hard Reset Shut down the computer by going to the Start menu and selecting shut down. (If you have no display, hold the power button down for  5 seconds)Disconnect the AC Adapter from the notebook.Remove the battery from the bottom of the notebook.  There will be a switch/button to eject the battery.Wait at least 1 minute with all power sources disconnected.Re-insert the battery and reconnect the AC Adapter and then attempt to power on the notebook.

For some time now, i have been experiencing that my Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock all lights up (not blinking) all at the same time, I tried to google it but i can not find any solutions or explanations for it.

Does anyone know if it is bad? and what is causing this?

I am having a wired keyboard with nothing fancy just a standard issue Logitech keyboard.

Answer:Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock all lights up (not blinking)

Can you toggle those functions off, one at a time? Sometimes restarting the computer will use the last state it was in, I'd fully shut down and pull the power cord from the computer and the keyboard cable then put them back and try again.

Hi,

how to disable Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages?

I have desktop pc with two keyboards usb and bluetooth. Also TOSHIBA Bluetooth Stack software, but in device manager: keyboard > hid keyboard device both using microsoft drivers. And I dont have any software installed for keyboards. Also bluetooth has separate system tray indications (it is also disabled) so its not that. I made some googling and found other fix it with Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Widcomm\BTConfig\General KeyIndication set to 0, but I dont have it in registry. Acualy I dont have anywhere in registry KeyIndication. So any ideas how to disable it? Thanks

Answer:Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages

Hi,

You'll find that the messages are controlled by a piece of software that came pre-installed on your machine when you bought it. Try looking for a Hotkey managing app to see if the notifications can be disabled.

Recently, I had to reinstall my copy of Windows 2000. It had stopped loading correctly - after the Windows Loading screen and before the log-in screen, I would get a blue screen error (page_fault_in_nonpaged_area). I don't have any of the numbers with that though. Anyway, after a fresh install, Windows seemed alright. Now, when I play World of Warcraft, I get about 15 mins of play before the game literally comes to a screeching stop. The screen gets all scrambled, and then freezes. I have to manually restart. I had had occasional problems like that before, but sporadically and after hours of play. Now it happens practically every time I play World of Warcraft, and usually between 15-30 mins of play. My question is really just seeking any advice on what anyone thinks the problem concerns. I don't know tons about computers, but my thoughts led me naturally to my video card. But, as a starving college student, I don't want to immediatly drop 200 bucks on a new vid card without getting some other ideas first. Any thoughts people might have would be greatly appreciated.

On a regular basis, my screen locks and the mouse icons moves independently around the screen. This occurs if I leave the PC idle for maybe 15 minutes. At this point the mouse or keyboard does not work. Cntl Alt del does not work. My only option is to power down and reboot.
When I reboot, a message comes up asking to connect to TPM, I cancel this and continue to reboot.
This does not happen every day but on the days it does, I can lose everything that was open 4 or 5 times a day unless I go on Standby when not actively working the PC.
Any one any idea how to stop this. Incredibly frustrating.
Declan.

Answer:TPM causes system lock

Is this the Dell Trusted Platform Module BIOS setting which enables encryption? If so you can turn it off in BIOS setup.

If not, Let's start by getting a clean boot so nothing is running except the OS and your AV.

Enter msconfig>Startup and uncheck everything except your AV listing.

Next enter msconfig>Services, select Hide all MS services, then uncheck all except AV.

After several reboots check back in both places to make sure nothing wrote itself back in. If so, turn it off in it's Program preferences or Uninstall it. You can learn what program is involved by googling the listing.

If problem persists, google the exact error message verbatim to learn how others have solved it.

Run a full scan with Malwarebytes.
Install recommended MSE or Avast 6, run full scan.
If you have one of the bloatware AV's MucAfee or Norton, uninstall using their special tool.

I have done everything to this computer I can think of.
Installed, updated & ran Ad-Aware, Spybot, Window Washer and AVG anit-virus.
Got rid of all of the ad/spy/mal ware.
Got rid of viruses.

Installed new modem & RAM.
Vacuumed out / cleaned CPU fan, ect.
She even installed a new HD that Dell sent her.

It still locks up.
USUALLY when online (Dial-up AOL) but not always so I dont think that's got anything to do with it.

It's been doing it since she bought it from Dell.
Unfortunately, after she got the replacement HD from Dell, she never "got around to" returning it because it still locked up, now it's too late.

Any ideas?

Question: system lock up

I'm trying to fix my sister's computer. It will always lock up for no apparent reason. I tried updating windows, McAfee antivirus, AdAware, etc and running complete system scans and it didn't work. So I took a seperate, formatted hard drive and put a fresh install of WinXP on it with nothing else. The computer still locks up. So I created a bootable CD-ROM with Microsoft's memory diagnostic utility and it even locked up on that. So I took both sticks of memory out and ran the utility on each one. Again, they both locked up. They both froze on test 9 of 11 which is the "WStride-6 test: Applies a stride-6 pattern using data patterns tailored for the memory in this system". I have no idea what else to try. Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong and how I could fix it? The memory consists of a stick of 128Mb PC-133 and another 128Mb stick but I'm unsure of it's speed. It's running a PIII 667 MHz processor with a SOYO SY-7ISA+ mobo and using the onboard video/sound. WinXP Pro OS.

Thanks for you help.

Hi, Yes, but they can be gotten around by someone with a little knowhow, and if you forget certain ones, it's hard to remove.
There are all kinds of ways to get around things.

Have a look here, but you have to look at info for XP Home, or Pro, whichever you use! The security features are more robust in Pro edition.

Question: System lock up

Hello
Any ideas why my system periodcally locks up/crashes either at night or while I am at away at work? This might happen 2 nights in a row then not again for a week - no pattern at all. I have power options set to 'balanced' . 'Put computer to sleep'>'Never' (on main page), 'allow hybrid sleep'> 'On' (advanced settings), 'turn hard drives off' > 'never'. I have automatic back up set to run each night at 10:00 to an internal HDD, but other than that the only things that should be running are the defaulted Win7 settings such as updates, etc.

Question: System Lock

System mother board is Phoenix RAM BIOS PLUS 1.10 A09

Answer:System Lock

Hi and welcome to TSG.

As its a Dell, can you give us the Dell Service Tag number then we can look up the exact system specs?

What have you done to 'attempt to correct' the problem?

I would strongly advise against using any form of registry checker software, they can (and often do) do far more harm than good, often causing problems that are not initially apparent. Best overall advice as far as the Registry is concerned is leave well alone if you don't know what you are doing, or accept that you could frag you system software.

System battery isn't a major issue really, so wouldn't worry too much about that at this point.

With the system shut down, double check all the cables and connectors inside, physically remove every connection in turn and reseat it. Do one at a time so you don't loose track of what goes where.

Hey guys. Got this system a few months back for my dad to use. He no longer needed it so he gave it to me. Installed a SSD and used my old HDD and his HDD. Now all I've done is install a few games. No other software or anything. But when I play some games i get hard lock ups... i cant alt tab or alt ctrl del or anything. It locks up and stays that way =|

Runs incredibly well all the time except when it decides to lock up. I have speed fan installed as I initially thought it was a GPU over heating issue but thats not the case.

I've run a intelburntest on the CPU to see if it was that and wondering if its likely to be a GPU or PSU issue?

Let me know what steps to take next and hopefully we can figure this out. haha thanks in advance.

Hi thanks for looking at my thread, I feel like a moocher coming cap in hand with my first post but I'm starting to get to my wits end. My system locks up in games anything from a couple of seconds to several hours in. The bigger the strain the quicker the lock up, PvPing in Warhammer online with about 50 people involved was locking me much more often. The system becomes unresponsive and requires a hard reboot.

I've tried to do so many things and each time I think I might have solved it bang lock up. I've got all the up to date drivers for mobo and video cards, I've got the fans cranked up to 100% and it seems fairly cool in there.

I just don't know what to do, maybe I missed something in upgrading to 64 bit some driver or something. I've tried to research online possible things but there is so much information. I'm resigned to dealing with my vendor tomorrow when I have the strength but for now hoping maybe there's a suggestion from you guys here. Thanks a lot for any help the system spec is below.

Answer:System lock up

Hi,
If you are thinking "virus" then I think you need to post a HJT (HijackThis) log and let a qualified member (gold shield next to their name) take you through what needs to be done. I suggest you print off this guide, just in case ....
Please go no further than the stages listed here for now.
Using Hijackthis with the self-installer that puts it into Program Files for you:

go to Click here to download HJTsetup.exe

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.

Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.

Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.

Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.

Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Now you'll need to wait for a qualified member to take you through the next stages. You'll get great help ...

Richard.

There was nothing at all to notice.

I then think it could be a hardware issue.

I'm currently looking for different registry "hacks" (for lack of a better term) to disable and lock down a somewhat public computer. Here is the setup. WinXP Professional + touch screen case with a 40"+ plasma/tft. (I don't know which to tell you the truth)

I need the "user" - basically anyone with a finger, to be able to navigate around a webpage on this display, but that is IT.

The computer itself is hidden in the ceiling, so no worries about someone doing a hard reset.

I would imagine I would need the start bar hidden, if there were some way to disable the IE window from minimizing that would be nice as well...

This system was set up many years ago, before I started working here.

Cliffs: Start bar disabled
Desktop icons disabled
Force the IE browser open. That's "it"

BTW: I know they used a VNC program to remote in before, but beyond that I am clueless. I am also using google, I just have a feeling I won't find all the info I need written down, especially procedures, I mean I need the IE window to open before I disable other things...

Thanks for the help all.

I have just started to experience a major irritation , and possibly even a major security issue

When using the PC , and at no particualr time or when doing any particular thing, the system becomes almost unusable.
The mouse seems to lock , or 'drags behind' or jumps across the screen in huge leaps, and the hard-drive seems to go into over-drive with it buzzing and whirring away.

I have checked Task manager and there are no unknown applications running.
I have also checked in processes , but again I cant see anything that looks out of place, although to be fair the names are not all recognisable.

There is plenty of RAM (at least 1 gb spare)

I do have SKYPE installed , but I only turn it on when I want to use it, so I assume that it cant be using my pc as a node , (unless it is switched on)

I use Norton 2009 with the system absolutely bang up to date
and the system has been deep scanned for viruses.

I am at a loss what this could be
This is a very important work PC, so am loathe to re-load windows, but unless there are no ideas, I might consider that as a last resort
When the problem happens it renders the PC almost unusable for periods up to 10 mins at a time .

Any help please ?

Question: System Lock ups

Hi there,
Thanks for reading.

I have an ancient Compaq Desktop, 500MHz w/ 384MB ram running W2K. All's been well until I installed a DVD +-RW and accompanying software. Now when I use RealPlayer basic or WMP, either I don't get video playback (although there IS sound) or the system locks up and I have to do a hard reboot.

I tried reinstalling Realplayer but problem continues.

Have you seen this before?

Thanks again!
Bob

Answer:System Lock ups

Did the DVD come with any software or driver discs?-If so try using there media player and see if that works properly--This may be a conflict issue between different media players fighting for control of either your audio or video.

First I want to say hello to everyone since this is my first post on these boards. Second, I'd like to ask for a bit of help. Lately my system has been sporadically locking up for brief periods of time then eventually freezing up all together. I had one identified worm on my system that I took care of but I am still experiencing problems. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me.

I have the following log;

Have you downloaded, installed, updated and run Ad-aware and SpyBot S&D? If not you can find links in this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/vb/showthread.php?t=26149.

After running and fixing anything Ad-aware and SpyBot find, download and run the below tool (you must remain online while running it):

Question: System Lock-ups

Okay, I recently purchased and installed an 80gb WD hard drive. After going through several different setups, I now have only WD installed as the single master. The jumpers are setup properly, but my system continues to lock up. It seems this happens whenever I try to download or install something, or when I run scandisk. Sometimes I can download small programs without it locking up, but anything large, it crashes. Any help on this topic? Thanks

So, I've been having issues with my recently built computer. Sometimes when I am playing a game, watching movie, opening a program, or even when I'm starting up the computer I've have system lock ups that require me to restart to get it back and running again. If there is a sound playing during the freeze, it will often get stuck too and repeatedly play the last little bit of the soundfile over and over rapidly. Kills the eardrums to say the least. -_-

I've updated every driver I can find and still am having the issues persist. I'd originally thought it was an issue with my graphics card but I'd switched the one I had been using for a second card and the issues still persist. I've checked the ram to see if they were faulty and the memtests keep coming back ok so I figure that can be ruled out.

The only times I've been able to recreate the lockups with 100% accuracy is when I attempt to install either Dragon Age or Mass Effect 2. Both installations freeze at various percentages. Sometimes it will get as far as a 50% installation while other times it freezes at the 13% mark.

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone can help. My computer has became increasingly unstable. When I say this I mean it has a tendency to freeze, lock up and reboot.

The problem is... well the problems are when you go into Internet Explorer or Firefox, the computer freezes when there is an image on screen. To get to unfreeze I can press ctrl-alt-del, this only helps for a short time as when it freezes again the motherboard beeps and the only way to get the computer working is to hit reboot on the base.

The other problem is when you exit IE or FF the computer completely locks up and the motherboard beeps and I have to hit reboot on the base once again. Even the keyboard stops responding so ctrl-alt-del is not possible.

At first I thought it was a graphical problem so I uninstalled all the drivers and that didn't stop the problem. I even replaced my GFX card, and took out the memory to see if it was faulty but that didn't stop the problem either. I've tried uninstalling the drivers for the printer, scanner, GFX card and sound card but to no avail.

It had even stopped my anti-virus software (pccillin2002) from updating on the net.

The only thing I can think that is buggering it up is that I have a ancient monitor CTX 1451, so old that you can't get any drivers for it now. After a while it lets out this high pitched squeal, if you hit it it goes away only to come back after a while. I don't know if a monitor could screw a computer up so much, but at the m... Read more

I am having a strange problem that has been occuring now on a regular basis. I am running windows ME and using zone alarm as my fire wall. I also use antivar, DR. Spyware, along with spyblaster ccleaner to clean up spyware and malware on aty regular intervoles. I have run HJT and had major geeks review the log. All was good with my system.I am also up to date with all the micro soft windows updates to ME. However when I power down I get a blue screen (not the blue screen of death with an error message) but a pale blue screen. At that point the system hangs. I have to reboot to safe mode, run disk scan and then power down. The other think that will sometimes happen when I go though this process, is the next time I power up. Sometimes I get a message that my last power down of window was incorrect and I have to hit the radio bar on my screen to get back my desk top. Any ideas. I can supply any othere info you may need. I would like to thank anyone in advance for ant help.

Running Windows 98se and the screen saver locks up, whole system freezes up. I have ran scan disk, defrag and everything in Norton Utilities, by the way, Windows Scan Disk will never complete, always get 10 restart message, no programs are running when I try it. I did however have the JS Seeker virus get in the system but I removed it. The systen worked fine after until a few days ago. Think maybe I should reinstalling windows over itself or just go ahead and format the thing.

Hello all,

I have a custom built PC that seems to have quite a unique issue. (Or so google thinks)

I am unable to load anything other than the bios. When i attempt to boot into windows the computer locks up. When i attempt to choose the repair computer in boot options it shows the windows logo, then the spinning dots and locks up. I attempt to load into the windows setup and the same follows. Spinning dots and locks up. I am currently attempting to format the usb with windows 10 i used to install windows in the first place however i fear more of the same will follow.

Could there be a fix for such an issue?

If more information required just ask.

Hi, do you mean you have tried to boot from a Win 10 bootable medium and this fails too?

If you haven't tried that, please do so.
If you have, please try removing your drive and booting from an external medium (e.g. DVD or flash drive).

History:
What happened prior to this? e.g. my PC was working normally and suddenly the power cut out... there was an update... etc

Also please complete your system specs- we don't even know if this is a laptop or a desktop.

I have a Gigabyte GA-71XE board,Athlon 700 o/c to 735,128 MB RAM, running Win98SE. A Creative CD5233E and a Creative CD-RW RW8438E both on the secondary IDE with the CDROM set as master.

When I insert a audio cd into the CDROM , the system frezes - the processor maxes out, CAD does no good, the mouse cursor is moveable but nothing happens when I click anywhere. If I push the button to eject the cd,the drive light stays on.The only recourse is to hit reset.Scandisk finds no errors.Audio CDs play fine in the CDRW.Data and games play fine in the CDROM.

No duplicates or erors in device manager.Disableing all background programs via EnditAll and StartUpCop helps none.Swapped slave/master -disconnected CDRW,no go.Scanned for virus (Norton and Trend Housecalls),clean booted, turned graphics and audio playback hardware acceleration to none.
Same lockup.During clean boot - CAD shows MSGSRV32.EXE not responding.Ran SFC,Norton System Check,Disk Doctor,Speed Disk,Scanreg,Regclean. I'm running out of ideas - if the CDROM itself were croaking, one would think the data and games wouldn't work(?)TIA for all suggestions.

Ok, I have done everything I know how to do and am completely at a loss now. My pc consist of the following parts:

CPU:6700k
GPU: EVGA 980 TI SC.
MB Asus Z170PRO
RAM 16gb DDR4
SSD/HDD: Samsung 840 Pro 512 - WD Black Edition 2TB.

Temps on the pc are amazing they idle around 20-25 and load is about 39-44 on cpu and gpu is around 29-33 Idle and load about 60-70c. I have run SFC Scans I have reinstalled I have run mem test and am clueless on what else to do...Sometimes it will go all week without locking up and others its 2-3x in a day all the parts was bought earlier this year and assembled. The system is NOT over clocked.
I will be playing a game and I will sometimes hear a short quick static sound like ssszzht and bam entire system frozen. I have to hard shut down to get it to come back. I have checked the SSD and HDD health both showing 100% and strong running. I have checked for any driver updates and I am fully up2date. Any ideas?

Could this be from a USB hub maybe? I just thought of this idk if it is possible or not, Normally I can track down just about any problem but when I pull the event viewer or reliability log up it just simply says Windows has shut down unexpectedly... This due to I have to hard shut down cause it locked up.

Answer:System lock ups randomly.

I have also run the PC diagnostics tool from Asus for my board and everything has passed.

Hey everyone. Starting about a week ago my system started locking up at random times.

I started at my event viewer and found a few errors and and resolved nearly all of them could have caused this. however the problem still persists.

My display drivers are up to date

I dont believe anything else has updated around the time of the crashes.

I am at a loss as to what it could be. It locks up when its just idling and when its being used IE gaming, youtube, web browsing
Any help would be great! thanks

Hello code gurus,

I am running a W7 machine. I am finding that it runs to 100% CPU usage for no obvious reason.

Mouse movement happens but any attempt at open, closing or switching between screen becomes cumbersome. If it moves at all it might be 5 or 6 minutes. I am finding this even on local connections to my external hard drives. Sometimes I just have to do a hard re-boot as nothing responds at all.

Thinking it might be some goofy string, I have run CCleaner and Malwarebytes in the past. Neither seem to make a difference. Ran SuperAntiSpyware and found a few little trackers, got rid of them. Still having trouble.

I use FFox and IE browsers. I usually do have about 5 Skype windows open as that is part of my connection with my company. My video card has 1gig processor on board. So I don't think its the graphics.

I look at the various tabs of Task Manager and can see that FFox and Skype are at the top usage, followed by Thunderbird.

Is this an issue with a recent MSoft update maybe?

I ran the anti malware gambit to give you something to look at. Malwarebytes turned up nothing. Attaching the SuperAntiSpyware report from a few days ago. Not much there either. But maybe it will give you more clues.

Thanks to all of you for your tireless help.

I built two of these systems around may2008, one for me and one for my wife. The only difference between the two is she has 2 sticks of ram (I have 4 but same memory) and her video card is different (EVGA 640-P2-N829-CR GeForce 8800 GTS SSC Edition 640MB).

From the get go we both had problems with usb devices not waking up after sleep mode. That was fixed by using a usb to ps2 adapter.

Over the course of the past few weeks both of the systems were freezing (locking up might be a better word since everything stops working mouse, keyboard etc etc) and a hard boot was the only way out of it. This seemed to occur around the same time as the latest vista security update (possibly a coincedance).

This week the problem persisted for both pc's and then wednesday night when my wife's went dow... Read more

Hi

If I remember correctly, I heard of issues with the 780i that was causing all sorts of issues like this. Check out the Nvidia (or EVGA) forums for similar issues for one thing.
I know I remember reading about similar issues as this at Nvidia forums...
I know the 780i chipset was having issues...
I just can't be certain this is what you're experiencing, but I'd scan those forums and also keep us posted here as well. Between us we can hopefully get this sorted out, but I KNOW I remember reading about issues with the 780i based boards similar to this...

I'm trying to find some help in the best way to troubleshoot this problem. I have made a post already but I think I made it in the wrong section of the forum so I wanted to try here. I play an MMORGP called Lineage II. Just like any other server based game I access their servers to play. I pay for two seperate accounts. What I do is open one client, log onto the server, enter game with a character in windowed mode. I then go to start and open another client, log onto the server with my other account info and onto another character and play them both. We call it two boxing. I alt-tab back and forth with I need something from my other character. A huge number of people play this way and I haven't found anyone that has this problem and some of them have lower end hardware than I.
What will happen is every once in a while, I'll hit al-tab and everything just freezes. cursor, no keyboard funtion, nothing. I have to reset to fix. Sometimes it will work fine for hours, and then sometimes, it will happen every ten minutes. I am assuming it is a hardware issue but I have no idea how best to trouble shoot it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. What can I do to find the problem?
Here is my general system info.

Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.7GHz

Hello, for the past day my system has been locking up and crashing. Unlike a normal lock up, there is no "hour glass" or CPU usage spike. I hear a click sound from the tower (similar to the sound when a CD ROM closes) than everything freezes completely. Cannot move mouse, ctrl-alt-del, nothing. When this happens, the HDD light on my tower stays on, but I don't hear the HDD spinning. This has happened with various applications open, so I can't pin it on any application failing. The only way to recover from this is to do a hard shut down and restart. I have tried running my system in both Knoppix and XP (dual boot) and the problem occurs in both, so I am inclined to think that it is a hardware problem, but I cannot figure out what hardware is causing the problem.

I am running:
Athlon XP 2500 clocked at 1.833
Assus k7n8x Delux m/b
512 MB generic RAM
Maxtor 80 GB Master IDE HDD (IDE 0)
Maxtor 120 GB Slave IDE HDD (IDE 1)
LG 4081 DVD burner (IDE 2)
LG CD Burner (IDE 3)
350 watt generic power supply

I usually work in XP but occasionally boot into Knoppix. The problem has happend in both at varying times of operation. (eg, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes after boot)

CPU temp is good, 39c, case temp is good, 30c, and the SMART info for both HDD's shows 100% fitness / performance

I am inclined to think it is a power supply problem but I want to make sure before buying a new power supply.

Any help is mucho apreciated!

Ok, the problem has already been stated in the topic. This might be a pretty long post, but please have patience, and I'll be ever grateful. The details are the following: (I am actually helping out a friend on this one, by the way)

My friend bought a new laptop (Acer Aspire 5738zg) about 6 months ago, and it worked like a charm. However, he never ran it on battery, only socket-charge... thus the battery quickly became electro-exhausted, and the laptop's battery weakened severely. The laptop can currently only run for 10 minutes at any given time without recharging.

He does not need the laptop to be mobile, though. But he wants to be able to utilize a particular external USB-HDD. I do not remeber the model, however the HDD is fully functional and works with every other computer he has plugged it into (about 10 different PC's).

Symptoms:
The laptop boots up and runs fine on socket-charge. The USB-HDD is plugged in... and the system freezes instantly. No respons comes from the PC, whatsoever. A forced reboot (pushing the start-button for 5 seconds) is required to restart the laptop.

Of course, my first guess was that his battery lacked the power required to run the external HDD through a USB-port. But my friend recently bought an entirely new battery from the vendor (warranty had expired for the old battery), yet the problem remains.

And of course, he's rather purky since the new battery costed $80 after all.

What on earth can be causing t... Read more

Over the last couple of months I have seen in Windows 10 14393.xxx the User Lock Screen become the Default Lock Screen. I have not found any way to restore the Default Lock Screen to its default (sea cave) image. I have checked in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\SystemData\S-1-5-18\ReadOnly\LockScreen_Z and the sea cave image is the only one there. I have tried sfc /scannow and DISM restorehealth and neither have worked. Has anyone else experienced this issue and if so have you found a way to restore the Default Lock Screen to its default? It may a registry entry that has become corrupt or that is set incorrectly. I simply do not know what causes this to happen or how to fix it once it does.

OK, my perfect little world is about to take shape I've got everything ready to fix my foul-ups from the past week and a half but one thing I hadn't really thought of. The physical drive that is my system drive--the one onto which Windows will be installed--has several partitions at the moment. During the install process, the two hidden partitions will be deleted as will the partition that was and will be C. Onto that unallocated space, Windows will do it's magic and create the recovery partition and the C partition and the Milk'n'Cookies partition. Familiar with the process, cool with it, woo hoo. There is an additional partition on this physical drive. We'll call it....uhmmmm.....the XXX drive on which resides a media collection which is quite dear to me.

In previous builds a whole boat load of crap has been installed onto that partition and it was anything but easy undoing Windows's dirty work (pun intended). SO...my last question is this:
Can I somehow LOCK this partition during the install process (or prior to the install process), insuring that it is not accessible to SYSTEM or anyone else for that matter?? At my disposal is Paragon 15, Disk Manager (duh) and a few other nifty tools--none of which I'm all that familiar with. Paragon is the one package I'm most experienced in and comfortable using--however I am not sure what path to take. Hints? Suggestions? Help?
Hopefully I'll get a quick answer because...well, because I'm honestly probably too impatient... Read more

None of us here are really well versed in OSX and we need a way to lock out the system preferences application for users - this is on a (windows run..) domain. Thanks

Answer:OSX 10.4 - Lock out system preferences for users

This is probably not the best way, but it's the easiest. First, change permissions of the folder to allow only read/write/execute by the admin group, then change the owner:group. Open up terminal, type:

cd /Applications
sudo chmod -R 770 "System Preferences.app"
sudo chown -R administrator:admin "System Preferences.app"
NOTE: The "administrator" name should be your login name that you use to administer OS X with, which should also be part of the admin group. If this screws up things too much (it shouldn't), then you can change back by using the commands above and substituting 777 for the 770 and root:wheel for administrator:admin.

Hey all!

I had been having random system lock-ups (complete lockup, display freezes, mouse doesn't work, keyboard lights don't respond) and I think I isolated the problem to either of the 2 DVD drives I have on my system (a Pioneer slot-load DVD player and a Philips 824 DVD-Rewriter) After removing those drives from my system, I haven't had any lockups... My question is, is it possible for DVD drives to cause such lockups or could my lockup problems be related to lack of PSU power (removing two drives saves same of the PSU power) I have a 420W Raidmax PSU and I have a P4 3Ghz HT running on an Intel D865Perl motherboard with 1Gb of DDR ram, 2 SATA harddrives, 1 IDE harddrive, 1 GeForce FX5200 card, a PCI Firewire card and about 6 Thermaltake fans (besides CPU fan)

I would appreciate any and all responses.

Thanks

Hello all,

I have a custom PC running Windows 7, and it is just a little over one year old. I have never really had any issues with it, however, last night, it had a hard lock-up. I was browsing through Ebay listings on Firefox, when I noticed it suddenly froze. After about a minute, I hit control-alt-delete to attempt to bring up the task manager to try to close Firefox manually. After about 10-15 seconds, it responded, and when I hit "task manager," it froze once more, and would not bring it up. On the screen, the "task manager" button appeared pushed down as it does when it is clicked on, if that makes sense. I let it sit there for about one minute, and then did a soft power-off.

I restarted the system, and of course got the old "Windows did not shut down normally" message and opted to start the system in normal mode. It started normally. Suspecting it might have been malware, I ran scans with Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, and Hitman Pro. They all came up clean. I am also running Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit. There are no other symptoms of malware, either.

Does anybody have any ideas what may have caused this, and if it might be indictive of a larger issue, or if it may just be a one-time glitch? I am planning to do a complete back-up of both drives just in case. I know systems tend to have minds of their own, but I'm not quite sure how to diagnose something like this and to determine if it's cause for worry or not.

Hi, I would like to start out with my problem. I have a HP pavillion a747c computer with an integrated grapics media accelerator. I recently puchased a Evga geforce 6800xt pci-e card. At first things were ok. I was having a little bit of problems with it resuming from hibernation, but not that big. Now the computer wont even boot up. It boots to the windows loading screen but then turns black with a cursor that changes into an hourglass, and thats where it stops. I messed with the whole drivers thing downloading everything I could for the computer, monitor, and graphics card, but that hasn't worked. I disabled the onboard video in the device manager and in the bios, but that didnt help either. I have removed and tried just about everything. I'm a little new to all this stuff, but I am eager to learn. Please could someone help me get my video card to work. my system specs are as follows....pentium 4 htp, 512 mb ddr sdram, and 160 gb hd. This system is stock with the exception of the video card. It is not in my machine right now. please help. My computer is set up for pci express.

Hey guys. I'm coming by here because I'm at my wits end right about now. I've been having this problem ever since I've had this computer. Originally, out of the box, my Gateway laptop was blue screening on me. I took it for servicing, turned out to be a corrupted video card. Had it replaced, stopped blue screening. But it would still lock up on me. I've taken it in for a few repairs since then (fixing the charger port, replacing the internal fan), but the tech guys haven't found a problem with the freezing that they can fix. Here's what I'm dealing with:

Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit - Service Pack 2
Memory: 4 GB
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU t5750 @ 2.00 GHz
Hard Drive: 282 GB (about 100 GB free on average)
Anti-Virus: Norton (provided through comcast, currently not working because comcast is having technical problems with it. But that's a recent problem and doesn't have anything to do with this)

Also use Spybot & RAM Booster. I use AusLogics Disk Defrag and Resitry Cleaner on occassion. I also back up my system onto an external hard drive every couple of weeks or so incase this sucker ever just flat out crashes on me.

Anybody have any possible solutions? I'm willing to give just about anything a shot. I'm having to reboot my computer due to freezes several times a day, and I know it's doing it's damage. Please help one and all.

I have as trange problem here. Some of you will be familiar with this one from my other post.
This is what I have narrowed it down to.

Evert time I install (or have installed) any nVidia drivers for my Geforce3, my system locks after about 30 seconds within Windows. If I dont have any drivers installed (like now) I can get through windows and carry on like normal.

This is a major pain becuase my system is primarily used for games!!! What would be causeing this?
Youcan see in my sig that there is a 9700PRO, well that has gone back to the store I bought it as it has a faulty power connection. Im using a Geforce3 Ti200. I have tried all versions of drivers..

This is my MOBO - GA-8SG667. I have the latest AGP drivers, and I have tried all versions of these; ever without them installed.
IDE drivers.....are the same story as the AGP. I have the latest BIOS, and this error was happening before the flash.

ANY IDEA'S????

Answer:nVidia drivers cause system lock

Did you properly uninstall the previous display drivers before adding new ones?

Was the faulty card tested to make sure it wasn't the AGP slot that was the cause of that problem?

How many different versions of nVidia drivers have you tried?
The 28.32 Detonators seem to be the best I've found for GF3 and older cards.

How much Overclocking have you done?
Try setting everything to the default settings.

Hey guys,
This is getting really annoying. This just started a few hours ago. While I'm doing anything, whether it be surfing the net, playing games. My mouse stops and the system makes a single beep, sometimes the mouse starts working again. Other times I have to unhoock the mouse and hook it back up. This is driving me nuts.

Is it.
A. Bad mouse?
B. Bad motherboard or PS2 slot?
C. Driver mess up?

Its a PS2 mouse.....

Answer:Partial Lock-System dying

Sounds like a bad mouse to me. Did you try rebooting?

When the mouse goes on lunch break your system beeps saying it lost it,etc (my guess anyways).

I highly doubt its a messup in the drivers, most drivers dont just stop working all of a sudden. Not to mention.. its a mouse

I use a M30X-130 model and in the past already experienced some system lock up/freezing-up problems under certain undetermined conditions.
Nothing goes when trying to unlock/unfreeze; disconnecting/reconnecting power supply and/or battery is the only way to get it restarted.

Now however, things got much worse.
At home I have broadband, travelling however I use a dial-up connection.
When disconnecting the dial-up connection after an e-mail session, 9 out of 10 the system locks up/freezes up. The only way to get it working again consists of disconnecting/reconnecting the power supply and restart the system.

Any ideas?
I am working under Windows XP SP2 and using Outlook as e-mail client.

Answer:M30X SYSTEM LOCK UP / FREEZING UP

Hello Jozef

As far as I know if the notebook freezes you can press power button and hold it down for about 5 seconds. On this way the notebook will be forced to switch off.

Believe me on this way it is not easy to say why this happen. Try to remove created dial-up connection and create the new one. You can also try to reinstall the modem but I don?t believe that this can help.

It is also possible that some ?virus? or ?self installed dialer? try to make connection and it can be reason for some conflict and result is freezing operating system.

Sorry but that is all what I can tell you at the moment.

Hi,

I wish to know if there is a way to prevent unauthorised access to computer system if it's been stolen?

The unauthorised access includes getting your computer formatted. So I wonder if there's a software that can do that?

So far I know the thieves are not able to access to the programs and folders if they do not have the password. I'm concern if there is a way as well to prevent them from formatting my computer as well? That includes prevent format system via USB (Press F10 thingy if not mistaken) before entering window log-on.

Thanks!

Answer:Full computer system lock?

Personally I always use a standard user account without a password and UAC at max. My admin account is password protected of course. When my computer boots up it automatically logs in to my standard account making it difficult and annoying to try to mess around with it. Also my AV is password protected too so its settings and shields cannot be disabled (uses a different pass from my admin)

I've trawled through the forums here and found similar problems but nothing thats quite the same, or that has the answers which I think I need! I'm very PC literate although a bit foggy sometimes when it comes to hardware...

THE PROBLEM -
My system generally runs without a problem but in the past month or so it's developed a lock-up. The freeze only occurs whilst I am running a game, although it has occurred once whilst using a level editing program.
The picture freezes and the sound enters a repetitive loop, mouse and keyboard are unresponsive and the only way to break free is to manually restart the pc by holding the power switch for 5 seconds... However this problem doesn't occur with all games, the main culprits are WH40K: Dawn Of War and C&C Generals. My specification as you can see below should easily run both games, AND has done perfectly in the past.

I have checked all of the obvious drivers are up to date and re-installed them, plus I have tried both original and updated versions of the games but this hasn't helped...

I did however notice something very odd, im detecting 2 CPUs and I only have ONE installed... Also under the device manager > Computer is 'Multiprocessor PC'..... My pc only has ONE processor, how on earth do I change that and could it be part of the problem?

Hi

Please forgive my limited IT knowledge and skills.

2 days ago, my computer crashes when load/Play an online game (I have played this online game for 4 years on this very machine). It firest seems to jam up, followed by pixels smearing on screen and few seconds later my screen goes black and to an off position although I can still here my hard drive and fan ticking.

I dont think the issue is with my screen, i think its either a Motherboard or Graphics Card overload or burn out.

I have tried loads of things so far i.e. re-update drivers, run virus checkers but nothing helps, so i am sure its a hardware issue.

As per my knowledge we can set the screensaver but it takes some time but whereas when we lock we must be able to see the second one.

Everytime I try to install Windows 98 or Windows98SE onto my harddrive, it always locks up during the copying files portion of the install. I can sometimes get by this part by changing some of the settings in the bios. In these cases I reboot and it hangs after the "Loading Windows for the first time" screen, and before it actually loads windows. I am running a 1.2Ghz Athlon Thunderbird on a ASUS A7A266 Rev. 1.10 motherboard. I am using the Annihaltor 2 AGP card (GeForce) and have tried a diamond PCI card. I have a 6.2 Gig WD harddrive hooked up, but have tried a 20 Gig. I have tried setting the CPU/SDRAM ratio to different settings and the multiplier to different settings. I have tried the harddrive on both the primary and secondary ide controllers. I am running 256M of PC100 and have switched in another stick of 256M of PC100. I thought I had a bad board the first time and got a new board, but had the same results. I have updated to the latest bios. I have tried different cables. I know that the Windows cds are good because I could still load windows on my old system. I have tried safe mode, and loading step by step. It always locks up. I have tried several different bios settings. I thought it might be a heat problem, but I ran it in a very cold environment and had a bios reading of 36 degrees celsius. I would appreciate any help.

It's a long story, but I received a new system as a gift from my father. He's in the US, and ordered a bare bones kit from Tiger Direct.ca, and had it shipped to my brother for assembly. My brother has a good amount of experience with systems (building and otherwise), and I also am no slouch when it comes to computers, networks, software and internet, although admittedly hardware is not really my area.
It's a long story, but to recap some of it:

From the beginning, since the initial set-up and the operating system install, there has been an issue of persistent system lock ups. This occurs on a continuous basis, regardless of system activity, and when this occurs, the task manager is ineffective, and one is forced to reset using the button on the front of the tower, losing any projects or progress made in the interim. The operating system, Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2, does not log any associated errors, and many attempts have been made to identify and subsequently fix this problem, with no success. The lock ups occur at random, with no set pattern, during varied tasks, tasks which can and have been carried out during a time frame where the system ran long enough without locking up, seemingly eliminating the individual activities and processes as the culprits themselves.

For example, the system has frozen/locked up when browsing the internet, when attempting to view a video file saved to the hard drive, during an anti-virus scan, during an anti-spywa... Read more

I?ve recently bought a X1 Carbon with the infrared camera, which allows me to use Windows Hello facial recognition to logon, which works just fine. I use the Windows key + L to lock the laptop, but I?m finding with Windows Hello switched on, the infrared camera keeps searching for me. Does anyone know how I can stop the camera from looking for me when I lock the system? I looked in the settings just couldn?t see anything about disabling the infrared camera on system lock. Any help appreciated, thanks

Greetings Win 10 Experts,

I've been building PCs for years, I'm confident in my ability to use, diagnose and resolve every major PC issue I've come across, but this situation is so unique and I can't find any similar issue in search to solve.

---

I built 2 pcs for my children, identical. Started with an inexpensive Dell Desktop and added ram, sshd, graphics and cooling so they would be starter-gaming devices.

One of the PCs recently has started to freeze input. Keyboard doesn't take any input, doesn't return PC Speaker beeps from trying over and over, mouse does not move at all but the system is still running. If you're in a game, all audio and video continues without stuttering. Pressing the power button on the tower initiates shutdown, it does not require a hard reset.

---

Its running Windows 10 64 Bit Pro. I have Group Policy setup to not automatically download Windows updates, I handle them manually myself. Since the computers are for my young children I've got them fairly restricted in terms of outgoing / incoming access (Netlimiter). I have updated all the drivers, I have run mdsched.exe, sfc /scannow, disk cleanup, I checked for high temps under load. I've done everything I can think of and yet at random the pc will do this soft freeze and require a reset.

Both computers have been running for about 4 months with this issue only cropping up in the past few weeks on this 1 PC. I've also changed out the Mouse and Keyboard in case there was maybe some errant keyboar... Read more

"Performance power management features on processor 3 in group 0 are disabled due to a firmware problem. Check with the computer manufacturer for updated firmware."

I've had 180 of these since February! I've tried tonnes of malware cleaning / fixing, driver updates, and sfc fixes, but still getting these usually when gaming.

I've attached a zip of SF Diags folder.

Please help!

Answer:Event ID 35 resulting in hard lock of system

Don't be concerned about errors in the Event Viewer unless you are having problems (I said this without looking at the reports that you've uploaded).
This error in particular is saying that you may need a BIOS/UEFI update.
Once that's been updated to the latest version - don't worry about it anymore (again, unless you're having problems).

Your BIOS dates from 2011. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

You have a Realtek RTL8188SU Wireless LAN 802.11n USB 2.0 Network Adapter:

I do not recommend using wireless USB network devices. Especially in Win8/8.1 systems.
These wireless USB devices have many issues with Win7 and later - using Vista drivers with them is almost sure to cause a BSOD.
Should you want to keep using these devices, be sure to have Win8/8.1 drivers - DO NOT use Vista drivers!!!
An installable wireless PCI/PCIe card that's plugged into your motherboard is much more robust, reliable, and powerful.

These devices have problems in Device Manager:

My system is very slow at start up, I think I have too many things loading taking up time. It also locks up sometimes - the processing light is lit non stop. The Panda Scan says I am infected, but my AVG is up to date. Are there some operations I can turn off?

Thank you

I have a customer who has a Windows 8.1 laptop at the house that he uses to remote into the office, and this system is in a workgroup. The problem is that if the user locks the laptop or it goes into standby, as soon as CTRL-ALT is pressed, the screen
says "Locking" and never gives us a chance to log in. System restore won't complete successfully (I had a previous post in Technet to troubleshoot this, but restore was never successful). I've attempted SFC /scannow, and some corruption was found,
but the system wasn't able to fix everything. I've attempted to manually uninstall all updates and applications that were installed on or after this problem arose with no luck. I've attempted to run chkdsk /R, but it hangs at 10% - I left this running for
around 2.5 hours, and it never got any further, so I terminated the process. I am unable to lock and log back in with clean boot; however, I can lock and log back in with Safe Mode. I've also attempted to create a new profile, and the locking also occurs with
it. Does anyone have an idea as to what I might try? Thank you.

im sure i am infected but cannot identify it.
symtoms;
i cannot install MBAM, i double click the install, hour glass comes but doesnt actually run.

i can and have installed Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.4. when attempting to run a full scan, it will scan the memory (active scan) but when it gets to actually doing a full scan on the Hard drive (C:) it stops and goes to "completed"

a check disk for my computer comes back with "check dissk was unable to start" but no option to schedule. same thing happens in safe mode
a check disk from the command prompt will not schedule.

i have removed the HDD and done a virus scan and a MBAM scan from another computer, that is with the hard drive connected to another computer but not booted from THAT hard drive. and have cleaned out many viuses this way but still something is in there

also SpybotSD will install, if you attempt to run it it shows in the Task manager/processes but does not appear
combofix will not install.

any ideas. is this a residual registry entry somewere.

i have also atered the registry to allow installs during save mode and still cannot install MBAM
and still no check disk will run or schedule even from safe mode

thanks

jon

Answer:some kind of infection/ file system lock?

If mbam won't installSome types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it. Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run.

Hi there, my windows 7 system I use for music production randomly freezes. I was looking in the Computer Management Event Viewer and there are ALOT of MOUCLASS error references and also some windows update failures. Could this be causing the random freezes? Also, the system freezes on boot up and I have to reboot then it works fine for a while, but freezes again intermittently. I dont connect this system to the internet except for windows updates and DAW updates. If I need to post some system information, please let me know what I should post. Thanks.

this is my systemmachine model 7662ctointel core 2 duo t81002gb ramvista home basic Apparantly freecell is an unstable program, because maximizing it caused it to turn white, and in five seconds the window bar stated (Not Responding). This shouldnt be a problem because there is an agent in Vista that politely handles this, and asks if you would like to complain to Microsoft, restart or recover the program etc. However, on my system that agent seems to be brokenInternet explorer, regular explorer, control panel, freecell, even extracting ZIP FILES all now wield the power to annihilate Windows. I can't even ctrl-alt-delete and use the task manager to shut down the mavrick programs. (it just returns me to the looping operating system, as I wait for an eternity for the task manager to make it's entrance, which it never does) I believe that the program that handles crashes on my system is broken somehow, I have never seen it pop up. Instead, if any program crashes the whole system locks up. Isthere a way I can confirm this? besides trying to make vista crash. also, i keep getting the tray icon that tells me if I want to safely remove my dvd drive. I cant get rid of this. thought i might mention it.Message Edited by vwr0527 on 08-25-2008 08:50 PM

Answer:Vista- program crashs causes system lock up

More memory mite help. I have a machine at work with Vista Home Basic(which I don't like I mite add) but it did the same thing. I added more memory and things were ok. I, in my own opinion, think that 2gig ram on Vista anything is borderline. Cheers, Singtoh

Does anyone do anything besides removing them from local admin group?

Business network with windows AD controller. Just researching some options for clients that have some tech savvy users that need a bit of protection but maybe not be completely stripped of admin rights for program install/updates.

I have been having this problem for about a month now and I'm going crazy! It started out in a game Unreal Tournament 2004 when after about 10 minutes I would get total lock up, could not exit, no keys work, Ctrl, Alt, Del did not work nothing had to do a hard reboot, when I checked event viewer there was no log in application or system. Well I just thought it was the game but now it's happening in other apps. I do a lot of digital art like Bryce5, Terragen, Mojoworld etc, and in the middle of rendering a scene I get total lock up again! Well I did a benchmark on my Display adaptor and it gave me an error msg that my
driver ati2dvag got stuck in an infinite loop stating that there was a problem in the device itself or the driver. Well I went ATI site an found the error message "stuck in an infinite loop" and they say it's in the B.I.O.S.? All these programs ran fine before, checked for spyware, virruses, I defrag the hard drive, did a chkdsk. nothing is there!! Could someone please help or give me some clues before I do a reformat! My system is Athlon2100+, 1280mb ram, Kt266 Chipset ddr ATX, 80 gb HD, ATI Radeon 7000 64mb SDR graphics card Running XP home edition.
Thanks for any help!!!!
