Confused about which GPU to buy

Question: Confused about which GPU to buy

THIS IS A LONG POST, I WOULD APPRECIATE IF ANYONE WILLING TO HELP WOULD READ THIS!

Okay guys, im having trouble finding which GPU to buy,so here is my problem.

Im having a very hard time deciding which GPU to buy in my country. Now since I dont live in USA and if I did I would have already bought myself GTX 980 Ti, but unfortunately since I live in Europe here the VAT is 20% of US price tag + local country tax, and GPU are seriously overpriced.

Now I have 4 choices on what GPU I want to buy:

R9 290 (X), the cheapest one here is Gigabyte which is 305 Euro (335Euro)

R9 390 (X), the cheaperst one here is Sapphire Nitro which is 365 Euro (Asus 482 Euro)

GTX 980, the cheapest one here is Zotac which is 510 Euro

GTX 980 Ti and R9 Fury X, the bane of my wallet, the cheapest ones are 700 euros ( for reference GTX 980 Ti) 720 Euros for Fury X and 730 Euros for cheapest non reference GTX 980 Ti which is MSI GTX 980 Ti Gaming

So as you can see the prices are clearly ripping the money out of my pocket because of how much they are, and while I have the money to buy either one of them I really dont want to feel like im being ripped off even though that is how market here works.

I have also another list of things which will hopefully help you guys determine which GPU I should buy, as to see what is better for me.

1) I just bought a new monitor, im aiming towards 1440p gameplay.

2) I play a a little modern games but I always play them atleast once, (Witcher 3, Batman AK etc...), but when I do I would rather like to max them out.

3) The games I currently mostly play are not so much demanding and but I would like to play them at 4K VSR, DSR:

-WoW -Starcraft 2 -Diablo -Skyrim -MK X

and some others too.

The game I will be most looking for to play is The Witcher 3 and some of new games I will get which are:

MGS V The Phantom Pain

Sword Coast Legends

Heroes of Might and Magic VII

Mafia III

Hopefully I have given you guys enough info to make your decision, this is really confusing for me since I have never been buying PC components for so much money, and I dont know which one is more worth it than the other. If you have any questions for anything else, let me know, thanks.

Preferred Solution: Confused about which GPU to buy

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Confused about which GPU to buy

The decision is up to you. Obviously the best value is the 290, if you want to pay twice as much money you can still get higher performance, but maybe only about 30% better.

OK, My Grandmothers house was hit by electricity a couple of weeks ago. It blew out her phones and her computer will not turn on. I have not tried turning the computer on myself this is just what I was told. The strange thing to me is the computer was plugged into a surge protected with the monitor and other things. The monitor still works the surge protector still works and everything else that was plugged into the surge protector still works. The only thing that does not work is the computer. Isn't that strange? The electricity would have blown out anything pluged into the surge protected and would have tried the surge protector? RIGHT? Now I don't know if the whole computer will no longer work. Does it sound like it could just be the power supply? How does a computer act after getting hit by electricity? This computer will not do anything! You push the power button and nothing happens. Does anyone have any ideas? Is the computer fried? Is there anyway to fix it? Thanks for the help...

Hello Everyone. I've joined the group as I've just started my own business and I need a website. (oh yes i surely do). I thought someone out there might be able to help.Oddly I kind of understand the technical part of a site build but I don't understand the design element. I have reg the domain name and now need someone to design my corp identity. So the question is: by trade is someone who does corp identity, the same person that 'designs' a website, or is the person who designs the website also the web builder? It's confusing since when you talk to a company about doing the above they talk about 'we' - no idea how many people behind closed doors and their role would be. As a start up I can't afford a company anyway, so would like to use a freelancer - but how many?!I don't want to build from a template so will defo need a designer but I'm so unsure of all their specific roles. Help!!....then there's the SEO, does the web builder do that, or is that also a separate person!! ARHGHHHHH

Answer:more confused and mrs confused about web design

Hi Lozzalady,I understand your confusion as there seem to be so many different names that most people have no understanding of.A good webdesigner/ Graphic designer should be able to help you out with most of these points. If you already have a corporate image ie Logo/colour scheme/ headed notepaper etc then a site/graphic designer should be able to work with you on the creation of a basic design and what you want YOUR site to look like. They are there to assist you. Many freelance webdesigners will be able to cover most of these aspects for you. SEO is also something that I concentrate on when building a site by ensuring I use correct metadata, page titles and keywords for each page. Linking off to similar site can also help with SEO. Often a well structured site with correct SEO data built in, a sitemap on google and sending in your url to them is the best SEO you can get.To get a good list does take time but by using these points you should get there in a couple of months.

hi guys n gals i have a question that probably has a very simple answer (but i can't sort it )

i have a lot of pictures in the file MY PICTURES what i have tried to do is get some of them onto a forum but without success i can E mail them without problems, i tried CUT/COPY/MOVE TO/SEND TO nothing seems to work.

as you can see i can get them on my avatar.

Answer:confused needs help please

There are a couple options:

1. Post as an attachment. Under the text box you type a post into, there is a 'Manage Attachments' button. Pressing this will pop-up a Window which you can use to browse to your file. There are some constraints here - file size and extension being most prevalent.

2. Post as an inline image. This will require you upload your photo on the web. (I would recommend ImageShack's service). You then copy the URL to the file, and use this button to paste the URL into your post.

Note that I've used Majorgeek's forum for this example, but most forums have a similar process.

i dont remember running ccleaner last night but maybe i did lol

Answer:a bit confused

Generally speaking, your personal web settings are kept in cookies and various temp files which CCleaner will wipe out. If you went back to the web sites, and logged back in as normal, the cookies and temps were put back, so now everyhting appears as normal....

Question: I am confused

I have an old PC running on XP Pro. I also have another extra HD just lying around. I installed Win server 2003 on the extra HD. My thought was that I can switch between the 2 HDs depending on what OS I want to run. When I switched back the XP HD, the PC still boots as a server 2003.

What am I missing in here?

Thanks..

Answer:I am confused

You're saying:

HD1 - XP

HD2 - Server 03

and you removed HD2 completely from the computer (unplugged cable), and it still boots server 2003? That would mean you installed it wrong.

If you're saying you have both HDs in, and it keeps booting from HD2, then push F10 or F2 or F12 (depending on your MoBo manufacturer) when you boot to get the boot menu, and select HD1.

I am running Windows 2000 Pro (SP4). It's a home computer.

I wanted to print copies of my resume (stored in my documents) and I get this message:Can Not Load Word for Window 6.0 files

I haven't changed anything - I've always printed my resumes from this file. All my other WordPad files come up...WHAT GIVES?

Have a read here under More Information - Known Issues (second bulleted item). I realize that they talk about XP, but right at the bottom of the article they cite Windows 2000 SP4:

I've been using AVG 7.5 for about 4 months now with no apparent problems, but have never been alerted to upgrade to ver.8 via the automatic update site.I have read in another mag that support for ver. 7.5 would end on May 31st, but mine still continues to download updates with the current date on.Today it has downloaded version 269.24.6/1487 release date 06/06/08.Is it still working, and how long will it continue?I am having other problems with my machine at present, and could do without any more, especially having read so many poor reports on this forum!

Answer:AVG 8.....I'm Confused

Confusion seems to be common with AVG users at the moment, though I understand updates will continue for version 7.5 until the end of this year. This is perhaps just as well since many people are changing back to 7.5 having encountered so many different problems with version 8.0 which seems to be seriously undermining the trust built up over quite a long period in the previous version.

Question: Really Confused...

Hello All,

New to the forum, glad I found it as I have a problem I cannot figure out.

I noticed yesterday my Dell Laptop seemed slow to respond to keystrokes or mouse clicks and the hard drive access lamp does not go out for long.

I suspected some type of virus although I do run McAfee Virus Scan, Firewall and also use Window's Defender. I ran a virus scan and to my surprise it reported a trojan called malware.hi in a file called ViewExif which I have used for years. I deleted the offending files and ran the scan again, it reports no problems.

The computer still runs slow so I ran a full scan using Windows Defender. It reports no problems as well.
I downloaded and tried PC Tools Spyware Doctor and it can only find a few cookies to report as a problem.

I cannot account for the slow response?

Is it possible I still have a program running that the Security programs cannot see?

Defender, McAfee and the Spyware doctor are up to date.
I use Windows XP which is also up to date.

Thanks for any advice or suggestions,

Dave

Question: Little Confused

Hi,

This thing happened to my computer, and I don't know what exactly happened. I plugged in a memorex flash drive to copy a few images, and explorer.exe hung, and then terminated by itself. After this, I noticed that the Norton Firewall icon had dissapeared. I logged out, and while I was logging out, xp prompted me with the following end program error messages for the following processes.

SDKListener (I think)
WMmonitor Win

If someone could tell me what exactly these are, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am running xp home sp2.
I have an HP Pavilion ze2315us.

Question: confused

Maybe you can help me settle a small friendly bet, a friend of mine put some software on my external hard drive. I never used it or installed it on my computer, the software programs just sat there untouched. One day I decided to look at what it was and some of it seemed questionable, as in it might be pirated, so I went ahead and deleted it all. So my question is, would I still be able to get into trouble if law enforcement looked on my hard drive and found the deleted files of the software and it wound up being pirated? One other question, am I legaly allowed to posess mp3s as long as I'm not sharing them and can I legally transfer my own store bought cds and dvds to mp3 and digital format to use on my mp3 player? Hope you can help me settle this, Thanks

Bill Gates will personally fling your computer from the highest cliff - rip those mp3's from your paranoid little fingers and make you walk the plank above his empty swimming pool.

Question: Confused

To be honest, I'm still not sure what's going on at the moment. I was unfortunate (and probably stupid )enough to have received a virus/infection of some sort recently. What happened was I was trying to dl a video, but in order to watch it apparently I had to download a codex first. I thought to myself, "ok, I'm probably just behind in all the new developments, I should probably get this." BIG mistake as it turns out, as soon as I did, my windows closed and what do you know, things started getting wacky. Things popped up on my screen: 2 shortcuts on the side that were some form of "online virus help" (don't remember the exact names), and in the menu bar a message popped up that said "System has detected a number of active spyware applications that may impact the performance of your computer. Click the icon to get rid of unwanted spyware by downloading an up-to-date anti-spyware solution."

After much, careful consideration (aka, panic attack) I immediately started Norton Antivirus and Ad-Aware SE Personal scans. Norton caught one virus, which I was prompted to manually delete, but future scans indicated nothing else. Ad-Aware also indicated nothing. However, my screen still had the the message/shortcuts on it. I'm not a computer genious, but I'm smart enough to know that when things pop up on your screen that you didn't choose to, it means bad things =/. So I did the next, carefully considered act (more p... Read more

Question: Very Confused...

Hi,

A part of my problem started last night and it has occurred ever since. I restarted my computer and when it reaches the Windows User Account selection screen, I keep getting these 2 pop-ups:

First pop-up,
USER ENVIRONMENT
Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If this problem persists, contact your netowrk administrator.

Second pop-up,
USER ENVIRONMENT
Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.

Each pop-up has a 30 second timer before it advances to the next screen with the only option of clicking 'OK'.
I'm very confused and unsure to why this has occurred. Any help/ideas are appreciated.

Hi,

I have been having problems with my PC, most notably since AVG Free stopped working. Ok, so I tried to download and run some other spyware/virus programs. However the computer kept freezing. It really slowed down a lot and I donít know why. Then it just wouldnít boot up, and I have just now successfully repaired windows and activated it aswell. Ok, so before the computer stopped booting, I went in to one of the users, and all the data on the desktop wasnít there anymore. Where has it been moved exactly? I know itís still there since the HD still shows the same amount of free space. Also, the main settings for each user seem to have been reset to the default ones, but it seems the data has been transferred somewhere else, does anyone know where the data is transferred to?
Anyway, now itís just really slow and I first need to figure out why that is happening and how to fix that, and then I will find a way to locate the data, copy it to a external HD that I am going to buy and use that as a main storage device just in case. But for now, how can I fix the speed and performance of this computer?

Hope someone can help.

Thanks in advance.

Question: Confused By AVG

Hi,

I have Windows 7 & Office 2010 running on my PC. When it was set up for me the chap that did it said the he had found Microsoft Essentials very good and unlike my last PC he didn't install AVG.

So for months I had MS Essentials and Malwarebytes running with no problem.

Then I had some tracking cookies which I couldn't seem to get rid of and I installed AVG 2012 Free version. It cleared them and everything has been working fine.

Then AVG 2013 came out and it has ground the PC to a halt on startup, sometimes I have to switch off and on again because it just won't allow connection to the Internet.

I rang AVG and they said disable MS Essentials and uninstall Malwarebytes.

How do I disable MS Essentials? and do I really need to get rid of Malwarebytes? It has picked up malware on a couple of occasions.

Thanks for any advice.

Answer:Confused By AVG

Hi -Quick questions first -Do you have the paid / Pro versions of either AVG or Malwarebytes currently installed ??Note: You should Never install more than one Antivirus program at any time, as they will both conflict with each other and cause problems -You can always leave the Malwarebytes installed, as it is not an Antivirus, but an Anti Malware program (even the Pro Version). These details are from SingularLabs Removal tool section >>> To remove MSE, only if you wish - Microsoft Security Essentials > Info > ToolAVG remover, if you prefer > AVG > Info > Tool (32bit) - Tool (64 bit) - Tool (Any Version)Always first Delete from Add/Remove or Programs and Features first then use the Uninstall Tool -Thank You -

The setup files are very similar indeed, but they are two different programs. Why are you getting 7.5 from oldversions?AVG AV is now at 8.0 and should be downloaded from Grisoft. http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe

I was trying to use a programe which was haveing problems as it stated that my computer did not have enough cpu, that it requires 1800mhz and I only have available 800mhz. My cpu is 2000mhz. I have ran PCwizard and noticed the following. My cpu processor is 2000mhz but it tells me I only have 800mhz available. This figure started at 1980mhz when I first open it then after a few minutes it drops to 800mhz and remains at that. I am running dual core with core load 1 at 9% and 2 at 12%. Can anyone explain to me what this is all about. I always thought the processor speed was static.thanks

Answer:Confused with CPU mhz.

I think you will find that though you have a Sempron2000 cpu, the Actual Mhz is in fact 800mhz.The number 2000 is I believe simply for identification.

This morning my wife was complaining about how fast her laptop cursor was. I took it and tried to adjust the pointing system. I know it will work without the drivers that make it adjustable, thats the way it comes.. I saw a button to disable and clicked it. Now the cursor doesn't work at all unless in the safe mode. What can I do? I tried to reinstall the drivers in normal and safe mode and they want install. Thanks.

Anyone please,

I did an antivirus scan using Kaspersky free online scanner. The results showed the computer is clean; however, it skipped approx. 55 objects due to being locked. Most of the locked objects are from files, C:\Documents and Settings and C:\WINDOWS\systems 32\.

This is the 1st time this has ever happened. I have never had any scan show objects locked.

My 1st thought is the objects are virus/spyware/malware related, but this is where I am confused. I followed the Kaspersky scan with a Trendmicro scan and it resulted clean.

Is my computer infected? How do I unlock the objects so that they can be scanned? I would really be grateful for any help concerning this issue.

Thanks in advance,

Hello, i appreciate this!I have a netgear router in an old house with poor signal (except in the room the router is in) so I bought a belkin g universal repeater. I attached this via ethernet cable to a dlan ethernet plug in the kitchen and it picked up a signal absolutely fine......great! well not quite! When I click on the signal bars on my task bar, I now have 2 available connection types both are the my home router named newlandsWiFi. One is the original poor wirelss signal and the other (presumably from the belkin) says excellent signal strength but is unsecured and only gives me limited access! any ideas? as obviously i would like to connect to the on with excellent strength! thanks!oh by the way, as it says it is "unsecured" it is not asking for a security key (which I have) but am wondering why its access is only limited!?

Answer:Confused! please help!

You might have to configure the repeater on your computer first before it can talk to the router, refer to the instruction leaflet or cd or Belkin website.Give it a distinguishable Ssid name from your original router and create a security key on the repeater as well.Afterwards you can log on either connection depending on the signal strength.

I am still trying to get set up on dsl.
Verzon first said it was my ethernet card which I now have replaced with their card. And still it wont work.
So now they said I have to call microsoft (because the prob is in the os) to ask why it dont show an ip in msconfig /renew. Am I getting the run around or what?
I may not be making much sense but I cant make any sense out of what they told me

Answer:need help bad

Far as I am aware, unless you have the resources of some ultra sophisticated recovery stuff (not available to John Q Public) you will have to reinstall the software programs you lost. Formatting is very final.
Just reinstall the progs you lost - At least you now have a squeaky clean drive to put it all back in.

Question: Confused???

I have a clean PC with all legitimate software. I run NOD32 AV software (fully updated), Win XP SP2 with all updates. The PC is behind a Smoothwall Corporate firewall on a DSL connection.

Yesterday evening as I shut down the PC Winlogon.exe hung and I had to kill it in order to shut the PC down. This morning when I switched the PC on Winlogon crashed and the helpful Microsoft help centre said that I had a virus/trojan on my system. :-(

I ran an in depth scan using NOD32 and it found nothing.

I ran Adaware SE with the latest definitions and it found nothing but the inevitable tracking cookies.

The PC is a Dell Dimension 5000 P IV 3.0 with Win XP SP2, 2 Gig RAM, ATI video card, 2 x 160GB SATA drives, External WD 250 Gig Firewire connected drive, External 250 Gig USB drive (not connected now), Too much software loaded

I am going to buy Vista Ultimate Upgrade today, but before i do i want to make sure that i can do a fresh install. Basically every time i install a new OS i like to format everything and start over fresh. I have already backed up all my stuff, so i can format. Basically i want to know if with the Vista Ultimate Upgrade, can i boot from that Disc and during the install when i pick where to install it to can i format the drives then install it on a new partition. I hope this isnt too confusing to follow but i dont want to carry over all the crap that i have on XP right now into Vista. If anyone can clear this format before install thing for me that would be great.

My system is a AMD 3000+ 64 bit 2.0 Ghz
1 Gig of ram (i'm buying a second gig of ram today)
WD 10,000 RPM 74 GB hard drive with a 7200 RPM 80 Gig harddrive for extra storage

Hello everyone. im here hoping to find an anwser to my little big problem.
a month ago i went on to visit some family out of the states. as usual i let my sister used my computer thinking that she would do what i always ask her to do about safety in ciberspace. well to make this short i will say that when i came back i've found a total mess in my computer. she told me she had download some files from the net and that the computer started to act weird. at the moment i knew that there was something wrong with the pc so i decided to check it out my self. to my surprise i've found like a million bugs running around my pc doin bad stuff to it.
so i log to another tech forum like this one to explain my situation but unfortunatelly the help that i found wasnt that good at all. so i decided to try it again in another forum. and this is the i picked.
i did some stuff that i was told on the other forum and i got the logs n stuff for u to see. i hope any of you may be able to help me out figure out whats goin on and better yet, figure out how to get rid of what i have on my computer.
thanks in advance and this are my logs.

hi guys,

ive asked around a few places but noone seems to want to help. ild apprecate it if you guys could.

The past week or so my computer has been acting weird, freezing up all of a sudden, going slower then usual and my hard disk space kept going down and down, it went down about 10GBs in a week, and i didnt even download or install anything! ive tried a whole heap of spyware removal thingies and all that jazz but they ethier dont find anything or only find minor risks with tracking cookies.

i run norton 360 and that didnt find anything ethier. Well after getting no help elsewhere i decided to reformat the computer back to its orignal factory purchased state. now that ive done that, i went and ticked the "show hidden files" and on the desktop was 2 .INI files.

They had the following in a notepad:

[.ShellClassInfo]
[email protected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769
IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183

and
[.ShellClassInfo]
[email protected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21799

i deleted these files as i searched them on google and read that they are no good. the computer seems to be running ok and my hard disk space is back to around 281gbs (havent re-installed norton yet). But i scan with hijackthis and it has a few things that look suspicious.

also everytime i open IE it asks norton internet security askes me if i want to allow or disallow adobe flash, and it keeps asking and asking!

ill post my log and hope so... Read more

Hello! This is my first time on this site. In fact, this is my very first computer and I really have a lot of questions. But I'd like to start off by asked this if I may.....
This site is nothing like I expected, I thought tech support was like an actual company, or business, where I wrote in and some one (who's job this is) answered me. Looks like to me, this is a large chat room with regular folks in it, is that right? And if so, how protected is this site?

If you look at the various forums on the site, you will quickly realise it is not only a chat site. There are a large percentage of the forums where help is offered, according to the requirements (Which OS etc) In most of them you can freely exchange views with other members.
What do you mean by "how protected is it" All the entries, gossip or otherwise, are assumed to be legit and up front.

Question: very confused

my mothers computer is going crazy she has the major pop ups and the wintask problem she has downloaded all the necessary tool about buster hijack this ccleaner cwsshredder and the like but now the computer is constantly freezing the weather bug freezes the screen help please

Answer:very confused

Please do this:

First create a permanent folder somewhere like in My Documents and name it Hijack This.

Now Click here to download Hijack This. Download it and click "Save". Save it to the Hijack This folder you just created.

Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the program. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log. Click "Save" to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.

Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Question: Confused

I have been having quite a few problems I have a post in HJT forum as well I am not sure where to put this one can someone tell me what this is CAABOP23 it is on my desktop I can't move it or delete it says it can't read from file source also all my restore points have been deleted what can I do to fix these ?

Answer:Confused

Hi curtnay and welcome to BC

Its best to hold off making any changes right now until the HJT team is finished with your log. This will only confuse the issue and perhaps cause you and our team extra work. I'm going to stick my neck out here and predict that the HJT team will advise you on the neccessary steps that will also remove this desktop item. Please don't click on it in the meantime as this may reinfect your computer.

If this problem still exists after the team declares your machine clean then post back into this thread and we'll see what can be done.

Disable Indexing Services

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/OptimizeXP.html
Indexing services is a small program that hogs HUGE amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexing and updates lists of the files on your system, so you can search for them quickly, but it's completley unnessesary.

To disable it, go to the Control Panel and click Add/Remove Programs. Click the Add/Remove Window Components. Simply unclick the Indexing services and click next!

Answer:i'm confused!!

Hi,I'm relatively new to building websites myself but I coded my last one and used a book called Build Your Own Web Site The Right Way Using HTML & CSS.I use Dreamweaver 8 for building my websites but I believe Dreamweaver isn't cheap and I'm sure someone else can ell you about free ones.If your this new to building websites then I wouldn't recommend coding in dhtml & javascript yetas you may get put off by the jargon.HTML and CSS are the easiest languages for you to learn without prior knowledge of website building and then you could go on and learn a language like PHP, ASP, JavaScript etc

Question: Confused

About a week ago my boot crashed and I had to do a repair install of Windows XP which went otherwise fine. After the repair install XP booted fine right into Windows and everything seemed to be fine, so I updated all of my drivers (graphics, sound, motherboard, bios.) However, my system runs choppy, and I don't have a system that should run choppy with what it is running choppy with. I'm trying to play NBA 2K10 which before my boot crashed ran just fine, smooth as butter, now it runs choppy as in I get good FPS's according to the benchmark and Fraps (somewhere around 80 usually) but it hits parts of the game where the framerate gets choppy but stays at the 80 or so FPS's. I think I've pretty much gone through everything with this issue, I've defragged my harddrive a number of times, ran virus/malware/spyware scans a number of times, and even ran a registry cleaner a good few times (which keeps coming up with missing file extensions). I think it has to do with my other user account that I can't access through Windows login and can't delete because it contains important files, I actually have two of them, I'm not sure where the second one came from though. Either way, as a last ditch effort before I completly wipe my system clean I figured I would ask the professionals and post a HijackThis log. If this happens to be in the wrong area of the forum feel free to move it, I was originally going to post this in the XP area but read that Hi... Read more

Ok so im here again with some updates on whats going on and what is going on is very weird. yesterday after posting this i tried to work a little on my computer but non of the program icons seemed to work. i didnt make much of a deal cause i thought that since i had the computer runing for so long, that it could be something normal, so i shuted down and went to bed. today after coming back from basketball practice, i turn the computer on, click on firefox and nothing, then i clicked on another program and still nothing. so im thinking, well... it was probably one of those programs that i've download from bleeping computer, so i go to start, all programs, accesories, system tools and system recovery to try to do a system restore to an earlier time but then the program tells me that there are no restore points created, now im thinking, how could that be? there is no way that this is happening cause the system restore option was on the last time i check. so now im more confused than before because i was sure that my computer was fine, but anywayz... i hope somebody here may be able to figure out what the problem is, thank you again!!!

Question: I am confused

When I start up windows it gives me two errors. I am running WinXP.

It first says decompression error. then it says this
data file c:\programfiles\hpcenter\137903\users\default\data\storydb.dat

temp file c:\programfiles\hpcenter\137903\users\default\data\T96A802E

I have tried to find the file or files but, I am getting confused.

Answer:I am confused

Is that not likely to be HP printer software attempting to run on start up, but being unable to find required files?

If I got that right, try reinstalling the HP software to resolve the problem.

Try the fix at Kelly's Korner.Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar - #195 on the right.Right click on it and save the .vbs file to your hard drive. Then, double click on the file run the script. You may need to reboot your computer for the changes to take affect. With any fix like this you should create a new restore point and backup the registry first. For backing up the registry I like to use ERUNT.

Dear fellow Bleeping Computer members,

I am about as confused as I can be.

I am trying VERY hard to keep my PC running as lean and mean as I possibly can. Then, I go to install an application that says it needs Microsoft .NET FRAMEWORK installed......

Well, where do I begin? There is version 1.1, version 2.0, and version 3.0!! Which one do I want to install? Or, do I want to install ANY of them AT ALL???

The last time I installed version 2.0, it turned out that I eventually had to ALSO install some kind of UPDATE or SERVICE PACK for it also....

So, I guess what I am trying to find out, is WHICH ONE is most versatile, least troublesome, most helpful...?

I am NOT a developer, so I don't need it for that purpose....

The application that I mentioned before is Win XP Manager which is a sort of souped up WinXP tweaking tool...and it does much more. It is supposedly a good program for maximizing one's XP installation. Getting rid of "deadwwod", maximizing settings, etc. When you start it's setup, it informs you that you must have Microsoft (or is it Windows) .NET Framework installe don your machine for it to work. It mentions v.1.1 OR v.2.0....so, WHICH ONE??

Can anyone make a suggestion to help me figure out what to do here??

Thanks again for being here to listen and to help out!!

trumpetman51 (John)

Answer:I'm About As Confused As I Could Be....

IME, any application needing MS.NET...indicates what version it also needs.I have 2 ATI cards and I have to use MS.NET to download/install any updates for the drivers. As soon as I get the drivers, I remove MS.Net from my system (because it serves no other purpose and may never be used by me again).I go with the latest version that is out, in this case 3.5.I believe that the earlier versions continue to be downloadable because some older apps might not be compatible...but that's just a hunch of mine. My ATI drivers don't seem to care whether it's 2.5 or 3.0 or whatever...although I doubt if the first version would work properly with the ATI downloads. But, from what I read, much depends on when that program requiring NET was written.Bottom line: You can have each installed at once on your system...and there is no conflict. I've had 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 installed at the same time with no problems.More info on NET: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.NET_FrameworkLouis

Question: Confused

Hey all,

Here is my situation. I work a lot from home and the office. My company gave me a laptop since I float between locations. When I'm at the office, I can go in and add nearby printers. When I'm at home, the only way I can print is to disconnect my printer from my desktop computer and plug it into my laptop. What I'd love to do is be able to print from my laptop to my printer that's still hooked to my computer.

I've got both my computer and my laptop hooked up to a router. Normally, I would just share my printer and everything would be easy. However, since my home computer is setup for a workgroup environment and my laptop is setup for a domain environment, it's not working as easy as I hoped. Both machines are running XP pro.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get this to work? Thank you very much in advance. Let me know if you need any more information.

Kurt

Answer:Confused

You should still be able to search the computer name that has the printer hooked to and then add the printer. The thing is that you will have to attach it everytime you bring your laptop home, it will look like its there but it usually wont print. I ran into this issue when I setup a domain in my house except the printer was in my domain and I had to print from a workgroup computer.

Question: Confused??

This is my first time asking a question and I hope I'm doing it right, regardless here I go. I found this question which is so close to the problem I'm having so I tried the suggestions including with a little tweaking to make it work for me specifically but without success. My problem is changing my password for my wireless connection in order to stop every Tom Dick and Harry in the building where I live from using it. As it is I have one neighbor who basically lives here so she can play her games.
What I originally did before trying the suggestions was simply entered in the address bar the IP address 192.168.1.1 and/or 192.168.1 at the suggestion of my cable company who will not help me beyond this point (although today I noticed they may have changed it to 192.168.1.102 when my cursor hoovers over the connection icon on my task bar. Regardless the same thing happens like when I clicked on the suggestion, they can not find the page. My wireless is through Charter Cable Communications and I own my wireless router which is a Linksys WRT54G2, I did once before try to find the answers in the on line manual but they did not cover this specific topic. I'm at a lost as to how to do this. Any and all help will be greatly and forever appreciated.

P.S. Can you tell me why my neighbor can "borrow" the wireless connection on her laptop with the neighbor who lives directly down the hall from her and past me, (my apt. is across the hall from both) but she can n... Read more

Answer:Confused??

I started your own thread for you here, as it is far too confusing to help multiple people with different (even if similar) problems in one thread.

Login to the router, navigate to the wireless section and set the Encryption (or Security) Mode to WPA2-PSK AES or WPA-PSK TKIP depending on what the router and your devices can support. Consult the user guide, on CD or on the Linksys web site, for specifics.

Is Internet 2 not the same things as IPv6? I thought IPv6 had 128 bit i.p. address schemes.

They are two different things. Internet 2 is a super high speed network currently used mostly for academic research. IPv6 is the next generation version of IP, with a virtually inexhaustable range of addresses plus other features.

If you bought a business edition, the only way to change is by buying a new Vista or upgrading it. There are "upgrades" available, which may save you money. Do look to which editions you can upgrade, go to start -> control panel -> windows anytime upgrade.

Hi
I downloaded the longest journey some time ago using utorrent and now I have problem uninstalling it.
I went to add or remove programs and then tried to remove the game and a message came up saying that it seems the game has already been uninstalled and I can only remove the name of the game from the list I did that but when I went to my program files I saw that the game's file still exists so I tried to delete the file it self when a message poped up saying that renaming, moving or deleting this file could make some other programs not work.
what am I suppose to do?

Answer:Confused

Hello,First reinstall utorrent, then download revo uninstaller Revo once you launch the program select utorrent and uninstall, follow the guide and do an advanced scan and it will remove everything that has to do with that program.

The basic home routers such as linksys/dlink/netgear are basically units used for dhcp serving (layer 3 capability with a layer two switch integrated). Switches are normally layer two units and basically all they do is connect computers together (simplistic terms).

In most situations you require a router to share the internet between all your computers, you can also share files between your machines just as if you were connected to a switch. Also, a router normally tends to have a built in firewall so you can have an extra layer of protection.

If your ISP provides each computer with an IP address, then a switch would suffice for your needs.

In either case, all you need to do is plug your cable modem into the devices whether it be a switch or a router.

Hello everyone,I am trying to get windows to start on my mother in lawes computer and everytime I start the thing its says, "A problem with your hard drive has been detected" If i go into SAFE MODE or just continue it says " Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt. \D\RUNMENU.EXE\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM I have NO idea what this means or what to do. Any help would be great!!!!! Its a gateway with windows pre-installed

Answer:Confused

Not real sure why you are getting this message but give the following article a look. You will probably need the recovery disks that came from Gateway to recover.http://support.gateway.com/support/manlib/...19/08319chn.htmGood Luck

I have just bought the following PCCompaq PresarioPentium 4, 3.06GHz256mb DDR RAM80g/b h/d64mb Intel Extreme graphics cardWindows XPI picked it up on the cheap so not a bad deal but i am confused about the RAM when it comes to buying new games etc!On Task Manager it says the followingPhysical Mem 256420Cache 130688Available Mem 57032Firstly, is this normal? Why is the available memory much lower than the physical? What is cache?Secondly, when i am looking at games that require 256mb to run, have i got enough memory? Is it the Physical or the Available RAM that determines if i can run these games? Also the DVD R/W is 4x (which i believe is a bit slow) but with it being a DVD drive is the CD speed greater than 4x?I.e will games that require 8x, 16x or 32x CD-Rom work on this speed of DVD drive?Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Answer:RAM - I'm Confused!!

firstly lets see if you have a graphics card or if the graphics on your computer is on-board. If it is on-board it will take a big chunk of your physical memory. To do this just right click my computer and pick properties.Under computer, at the bottom, how much ram does it say you have.

Okay, so I've tried a lot of things with no results so I decided to come here. Basically, my computer is rediculously slow, even for the dinosaur that it really is (even after I followed to 'Slow Computer?' forum) and on top of that it's saying that my hard drive is almost full when as far as I know I only a handful of various programs and music on there. Is it possible that this is viral? I've had a history of Vundo and other viruses in the past, but I more or less fixed them with a combofix scan (which I now realize was a bad idea to perform without consulting you guys first). As far as what I've tried so far I've scanned with both ad-aware and avast free. Thanks in advance for any help!

Question: Confused

I had originally posted in this forum, but re-posted to the "Logs" forum since I was posting with a log. Should I start here to get response or is it properly posted in the "Logs" forum?

I am waiting for an answer so I can finish the a-squared scan. It is waiting for me to Quarantine, Delete, or ignore the "Trojans" it found. It has been 2 hours since I originally posted and would like to close out the program.
Thank you.

The topic I posted is acdseeqv.exe

Answer:Confused

Yes, it is properly posted in the log forum. I understand your impatience waiting for a reply. It is probably okay to let A-squared quarantine those files it found, but don't delete anything. Then you can close the program and wait for assistance in your log topic. Now that you have posted a log here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/310885/acdseeqvexe/ you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a MRT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the MRT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the MRT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the MRT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If yo... Read more

Question: Confused a bit....

Ok...im confused on something here.. I have an intel core 2 duo system, and am running a router with my internet connnection so i can play my xbox 360 on internet as well, however, recently ive begun having trouble. Sometimes I cannot get onto a web page with a browser. I open a browser like normal, and nothing loads..but my internet to my xbox is fine. it has done this even without the xbox connected. Not sure why. but it fixes when i reboot then does it again later. please help.

Answer:Confused a bit....

experiment and see if you can browse with the modem connected directly. If so then maybe some kind of setting is off in the router. I'm guessing your xbox connects wireless. Sounds like maybe the wired connection only is where the problem is at. How long have you had this setup? And when did it start, immediately?

Ok I have a HP s3100n 32 bit os running Vista. I got this pc thru a rental center and need some help. When I go to my computer and look at basic info, there are a bunch of drives. One is HP (c) which from what I am seeing is where e'thing installed is at. One is my DVD RW drive and then there are the following also:Recovery (D) (which is full and in the red),4 removable discs, F,G,H,IWhen I go to these and see what is what, the H drive shows me the "low down on the pc" and the others are all empty. I am wondering, what if anything do I do. The Recovery (D) disc drive keeps (every so often) telling me I need to update it. Which so far has meant put it to a disc. Is this normal? I need help. When I got the pc, I got no discs with it for any drivers or the OS so I am assuming that is why I keep having to put whatever to disc from the Recovery drive. Is there any advice or help you could send my way? Thanks, Deep.s this is Dee helping my sis-in-law with her pc. if any screenshots are needed please just let me know. also any further info point me in the right direction and i'll send that also.

Answer:A Bit Confused and Need Help

D should not be touched by you. This is the recovery partition that the rental place will use to restore the computer if anything happens to it. It is usually unwrittable; meaning, you can not and should not put anything in that partition.
The 4 removable drives F, G, H and I are for a card reader. If no cards are in the drives, the drive appears empty. If you insert a card into one of the drives, you will be able to see what is on the card (usually a camera card).

It doesn't sound normal to me. What did the rental place tell you to do?

Have you tried removing those programs in Safe Mode?

Have you tried a System Restore or Last Known Good Configuration?
