Preferred Solution: How to check ram type and speed

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,I am thinking of buying the T460s with a base configuration and then upgrading the SSD myself.Question - If I choose to buy the 128GB SATA SSD, does this mean that the SSD slot can only have SATA M.2 SSD in it?Similarly, If I choose the 256GB PCI-NVMe, then the SSD slot can hold only NVMe M.2 SSDs in it? Is there even such a thing as a universal M.2 slot, that can take SATA OR NVMe SSD? Thank you very much.-D

Answer:T460s SSD Type and Bus Speed

Per https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t4... , I think taking the SATA route with an aftermarket PCIe NVMe should be fine, but I too would like confirmation from an authority here. That said, if Lenovo?s markup for storage wasn?t so obscene, this would be less of a concern.

this happens to me a lot, and it's pretty annoying; after my computer is on for a while, i notice that when i hold down a key when im typing, it slows the action down. for example, if i want to delete a sentence, usually i hold down the backspace key and the cursor zips across the screen deleting everything real quick. but the longer my computer is on, it gets slower and it takes like a second per word. same if im typing; if i hold down a key, it will get maybe 4 characters down in a second when it should knock out 10 in that time.

this isn't affecting the speed letters are typed as i hit the keys, only when i hold down the button. so is there something i hit on my keyboard unknowingly that bogs down the rate letters are typed, or is it something else?

Looking for opinions (pros and cons) of the two processors types and speeds.

Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 640 w/HT Technology (3.2GHz,800FSB)

Pentium® D Processor 820 with Dual Core Technology (2.80GHz, 800FSB)

Does the Dual Core provide any significant advantage even though running slower than the Hyper Threading processor. Will the Dual Core be better at multi tasking since it is a dual processor core.

In performance tests, which would yield better results.

Answer:Opinions on Processor type/speed

Some comparison performance tests of CPUs including the two you have earmarked above Chas http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html

My take on it, yes the Dual Core CPUs do have a distinct edge over their single core parents, and in the tests above at Toms do occupy the top slots in the multitasking tests, personally I dont see any Cons to a dual cpu, plus more software will be written to take advantage of the 2xcores.

My pref would be the 820.

Hoping someone can answer this.  We sell overstock new items (including computers).  We just received a shipment of HP EliteBook 820 G2 laptops (new & sealed).  Unfortunately, the outside of the box does not give me any information as to the processor type or speed other that an Intel Inside sticker on the outside of the box.  The product codes are P2C18UT#ABA,  P2C22UT#ABA.  Is there a way to tell by this code the processor type / speed / amt of ram on each of these?  I really do not want to have to crack the factory seal unless absolutely necessary.  Thanks in advance for any insight.

Answer:Can you tell the process type / speed by the model #?

Yeah here they were for sale on newegg and Walmart. I think you can assume the ones you have are the same specs: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA6ZP3K33047 http://www.walmart.com/ip/HP-EliteBook-840-G2-Notebook-PC-12.5-Display-Intel-Core-i5-5200U-Processor... They have the same processor but the Walmart model has an SSD and a higher resolution screen.

Thanks,

Answer:checking processor type and speed

premsoman
Most of that info should be available on the screen at boot. If it goes by too fast to read, hit the pause/break key and it will stop untill you hit escape. If a splash screen is in your way try hitting escape then pause/break. Another option, get the exact model number and go to Dell's website to see what the system specs are supposed to be.

hi

processors have speeds like 2.7GHz and this actually a frequency at which it runs ..

frequency is cycles per second .... 2.7GHz = 2.7*1024*1024*1024 = 2,899,102,924.8 Hz i.e cycles per second or pulses per second .

i think 2,899,102,924.8 bits per second such processor is said to process .

on the other hand we have system type like 64-bit ... does that mean processor only processes 64 bits per second ? and how we differentiate both of these factors and distinguish clearly ?

Answer:system type and processor speed

It would be more accurate to think of it as the way the chip handles data and floating-point registers.

I sadly do not actually know the math. It does increase the rate at which data is processed.
It has more to do with the registers though. I'm not sure how it would fit into your equation exactly.

I have created a user form in which i have added VBA coding to prevent the possibility of the user being able to insert letters into the field. At current i have inserted the following cases: Case 32, 48 To 57What case do i need to insert in order to allow the user to insert a dot ('.') into a text box on a user form. This field is for a price and therefore, a dot is required so that the price can be separated and placed to two decimal places-e.g. 45.99Thanks your help would be appreciated!

Hi all, I have a PowerColor 9800Pro 256MB
and would like to know how to check what memory type I have but all memory is covered by heat sinks.
I have taken the card out and inspected it and recorded all numbers on it.
I see that it has two S/N's
I quess one for the Radeon 9800Pro 256 XR98-D3
and one for the PowerColor
is there a way to cross reference the numbers to check what memory is installed?
No product information manual online for the 9800Pro yet.

Answer:Check memory type 9800Pro

Look on the actual RAM itslef.....it will have a pretty long number. What are the last 2 digits?

If it's Samsung, then:

2A = 2.86

30 = 3.0

33 = 3.3

And if it's Infineon:

30 = 3.3

33 = 3.3

Even the Samsung 3.3 is working for nearlyt everyone over stock R9800PRO speeds (With a BIOS Flsah), but the Infineon seems barley able to surpass it's rating, ie 3.3 around 303mhz, 3.3 around 333mhz, but usually a little less than that

Hope you have the Samsung:grinthumb

Hi,
I was wondering if there is a way (maybe a little program or Windows tool) to get the full make and number of my modem whilst it is inoperative.
It worked fine prior to the installation of Win XP on my machine. When I tried to connect to the internet after installation, it said something about it being "not plugged in".
It is an internal modem, I believe a HSP56 MR, but that's all I know, and I'm obviously going to need updated drivers for it.

During the installation of XP, it gave me the option to save a copy of software and hardware that is (or may possibly be) incompatible. I saved this list in the default location, but I don't know where that location is, or what the file is called! I'm thinking that this should have some further details about my modem.

Alternatively, if anyone knows where I can get a generic driver for a HSP56 MR internal modem that works with Windows XP, that would suffice.

I've sent an e-mail to the guy who sold me the PC, but this was 9 months ago, so he may not remember/have a record.

Final option would be to open the PC up and see what I can find out.

Thanks
Gram

Answer:Check modem type, even though XP can't find it?

Well Gram, I did a search and it looks like thats a PCtel modem, when I went to their website it said that XP was unsupported
I'll continue to look for sutible driver though.

edit: I did find this driver, it's for their micromodem but it could work, wont hurt to try.

My IT guy was telling me that the type of file can affect download speeds across the network (LAN connection) to a local HD. Say if you have an image file vs. PDF vs whatever. I say hogwash. A 10-meg file, say, should be a 10-meg file no matter what. If there is any slight difference, then it would be minimal at best.

I was getting some problems with a large powerpoint file copying to my laptop from a server where my download speed started fine, then stalled and crept down to about 20 kb/sec. I tested the download several times and it would take MINUTES to copy sometimes and other times would even error out it was taking so long. Co-worker could download the exact same file in about 2-secs on his machine.

Answer:Does File Type affect copy speed?

In same cases, he is right, but in this specific case something else is going on. There was a nasty issue with windows 8 that caused this, but it has been patched.

Hello all, I just bought a 110-15ISK Type 80UD and it is not yet delivered; however, I would like to know if anyone can tell me the designated SATA speed for the 1TB mechanical hard drive because some literature states it is just SATA while other literature states it is SATA II. The reason I am asking is because I have seen many videos where individuals have chosen to install an SSD; however, I see no reason to do that if the speed is only going to be at standard SATA (150MB/s). However, if the 110-15ISK Type 80UD offers SATA II (300MB/s) or SATA III (600MB/s), then it might be wothwhile to go with an SSD. Thanks, newlaptop

Hello,
I have 2GB RAM on my Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit. I would like to buy additional 2GB RAM making a total of 4GB. I know that 32bit Windows 7 will not detect 4GB of RAM so ill be installing 64Bit version. I have a AMD athlon x2 dual core 5000+ 64Bit processor at 2.60GHz. I just opened up my chases to find out what type of RAM I have and also did a "Crucial Scan" which tells me I have a DDR2 PC2-6400, DDR2 PC2-5300 type of memory. I read somewhere that I need same type of RAM for better performance. My RAM card's label says it is a 2GB 2Rx8 PC2-6400U-666.

I need to know if I should install the same PC2-6400U-666 RAM in another slot or I can even use PC2-5300? which one is better? My RAM card labels does not show the RAM speed.

Also the Crucial Scan says that I can install a maximum of 4GB RAM. But is it 4GB per slot of the manufacturers maximum is 4GB?

My Crucial Scan:

You can get all information you want about your RAM with a little tool called CPUZ even without opening your CPU case,

Answer:Installing additional RAM - need to know speed, type and size.

If you want the best results, I would go in one of two ways. I'd either pull he existing chip out and buy the identical one....or just buy a new 2x2 GB kit. Either way, for best results and best chance of compatibility, you'll want identical chips.

Given the link, it means you have two slots in total, that can accept up to 2 GB per slot, for a total of 4 GB.

I have following add-ons installed for Tracking Protection in IE11. (Please see the image below.)

I have a question that do these multiple add-ons affect the speed and performance of IE in any way or they are here only for the good purpose and nothing bad.

I mean when we use adblock extension for Firefox/Chrome, it shows a impact on the browser's performance. Is it the same here for IE too?

Can I happily have these add-ons (as shown in image) in my IE? Please suggest.

I haven't experienced any drawbacks of the performance and stability of the browser while using such addons. Indeed I used to face incomplete blocking of ads in certain webpages.

We have this upload functionality in our application that allows only pdf,xls and txt files to be uploaded.
How can i know whether a user has renamed an exe file to txt(or pdf or xls)file and tried to upload it?
Currently,if a user performs any such trick, app throws error as 'Invalid file type',but the user shows us the file(with renamed ext) and claims it to be of proper ext.
Any inputs??

Answer:Check original file type after renaming extension

One way would be to check the version tab of the file's properties. txt, pdf, and xls files will not have this tab while most exe files will. It will usually identify the original filename.

If you want to do this or something similar in the application you should ask in the programming forum.

Hi,
My friend bought 8 GBs of 1333 RAM.
I recently installed CPU-z on his PC to check if everything was ok.
I saw that the RAM was running from 500-600.

How can i be sure, the speed its running?
Is there any program built specifically for that?
Thanks,
Alex

Answer:How to Check RAM Speed

CPU-z will tell you which speed it's running at. The BIOS will tell you which speed it's set to run at on most motherboards.

What processor and motherboard is the box using? This will shed quite a bit of light on what is possible. For example, does the CPU has a FSB like Core2Duo or Core2Quad, or is it a new Corei7 with the built in memory controller?

Hi all,

Earlier this year "Check Spelling as you type" in Word 2003 worked fine. Now it does not and the red wavy line does not appear under wrongly spelled words. (unless I click Spelling and Grammar first).

I have tried every suggestion on this web page with no luck.
The registry item named '1' mentioned in the article was missing.

It's a real mystery as the 'check spelling as you type' still works in PowerPoint and also in Windows Live Mail.

I can reactivate 'check spelling as you type' in a document If I choose to run a spell check via the 'Spelling and Grammar' icon on the toolbar or from the 'tools' menu item. Only then does 'check spelling as you type' begin working again for the current document.

I tried a system restore to June which is our earliest restore point for 2014. (I have restore points for 2012 but inexplicably none for 2013. I'd rather avoid going that far back in time)

I re-installed Microsoft Office 2003

any other ideas?

Answer:Word 2003 - 'Check Spelling as you type' no longer works correctly

You have have tried everything I would have. Unfortunately Microsoft no longer supports Office 2003 products. So you're not going to get much help from them. I have NTL cable broadband with ethernet connection.....I would like to check my connection speed as NTL says I have been upgraded from 1Mb to 2Mg and now seems to be promising 4MG. As I have not noticed any difference in the service it may be my modem is not capable of working with increased speed.a] Can anyone recommend a safe site or small programme I could use to check the speed?b] If I manage the test what can be considered a reasonable speed? My desktop that is connected by cables has always stated 100.0 Mbps on the icon in the system tray. My laptop which connects wirelessly gives varying speeds ranging from 54 Mbps(best) down to 12 Mbps(worst). This silver surfer would welcome advice from you experts out there but please make it simple.Bmay

Answer:Broadband speed check

<<< I would like to check my connection speed >>>Try this speed test site - click here<<< My desktop that is connected by cables has always stated 100.0 Mbps on the icon in the system tray. My laptop which connects wirelessly gives varying speeds ranging from 54 Mbps(best) down to 12 Mbps(worst). >>>These speeds are not those of your broadband internet connection. The standard speed at which a "wired" ethernet network runs is 100Mbps, so this is the speed at which your network adapter is communicating with the router. Similarly, the optimum speed for an 802.11g wireless network is 54Mbps, so this is the speed at which your Wireless Network Adapter is communicating with the router.

hi guys,i am wanting to check the speed of my cousins computers USB ports to see if they are USB1.1 or USB2.0Are there any free programmes out there that are able to check, or even are there any ways in Windows XP itself to check if it is USB 1.1 or 2.0?I have done a small search on this but came up only with a $39.99 device that works, I dont want to be spending that, its not really that important but when they are using their webcam its very slow and jumpy compared to mine, which i know i have USB2.0 ports but they havent a clue.

Answer:how can i check the speed of my USB ports?

Look under Device Manager. Find the USB section and look for Enhanced Controller. If you have one it's USB 2, if not 1.1.

I've installed 2 - "Crucial" PC133 128 MB modules in my Compaq Presario 5900T, but I'm not sure if the third module is a PC133 or a PC100 128 MB module because it's not marked with a speed or brand name.

All 3 modules are working fine and the computer is recognizing 384 MB of RAM.

What's a good, free Windows-based(not DOS-based) utility for checking the speed?

Hi, I know this isn't probably the best place to put this, but I'm new I really don't know where to post it.Ok so Ive looked up what is a good internet speed, some say 15mbps, some say your fine if you have at least over 8. Some say 4. But Ive been experiencing internet problems all the time, and my friends have a better internet than me and never encounter problems. My Average Download speed, tested with speedtest.net, is 3.81 mbps, is that... good? I am using Clear Wireless Internet, my friends use road runner, is road runner better than Clear, if any one has any knowledge about the two services please comment. Thanks, reply soon.

Answer:Internet Speed Check

Quote My Average Download speed, tested with speedtest.net, is 3.81 mbps, is that... good? The obvious question, what speed are you paying for?  And, how does your actual speed compare to what you're paying for?  Most ISPs offer a range of speeds and you get what you pay for, but physical limitations such as your distance from your telephone company nearest "Central Office", or relay point, if you're using DSL from your phone company, can limit your speed.  For an example of offerings of multiple speeds from an ISP, see http://www.centurylink.com/home/internet/ and click on the Speeds tab there.  Why did you choose Clear Wireless Internet?  Do you know anyone nearby who is using it?  If so, and if you can talk to them, you could ask how the service is working for them. edit: Is http://internet.clear.com/  your ISP?

I do not want to check the speed on a USB 3.0 flash drive or external drive. I need to know the speed of the port itself is transferring at full 3.0 capacity.

What I have is an external mechanical USB 3.0 hard drive. I know it's a 7200 rpm drive. My 3.0 USB ports on my laptop are not using the blue USB plastic to denote 3.0 speeds, they use black plastic.

Therefore I am not confidant they are running at full 3.0 speeds. I want a tool that will measure the port speeds independently of any drive or device on the USB port.

I did find this but I do not have any Advanced tab to check for or to reset the device to Super

There are four USB specs: 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, and 3.0. But to confuse things, each USB spec has more than one data rate assigned to it. Those rates are "low", "full", "high", and "super."
Therefore, benchmarking data throughput solely on speed is not necessarily conclusive as to what the actual spec being used. Thus, a USB 3.0 port may not be actually running at a "super" rating but at a "High" rating instead.
On a Windows machine, check the data rating of the USB root/hub - Goto: Device Manager --> USB Controllers --> USB Root Hub (Right Click) --> Properties --> Advanced (Tab).
It should tell you the data rating for the USB hub/port. Once you know that, you'll know the maximum throughput from the computer's POV.
Low = 1.5 Mbps Full = 12 Mbps High = 480... Read more

Answer:How do i check the speed on my USB port itself?

As my understanding, whether it's a usb 2.0/3.0 usb stick or 2.0/3.0 usb port the speeds are predefined and the same. It's the actual connection type and not the device itself.
USB 1.1 = 12 Mbit/sFirefire 400 = 400 Mbit/sUSB 2.0 = 480 Mbit/sFireWire 800 = 800 Mbit/sUSB 3.0 = 5 Gbit/seSATA = Up to 6 Gbit/s right now as it depend on the internal SATA chip.

Answer:Qosmio G30-126 - How can I check the speed of fan?

The fan sensor is not available to Windows Applications on many laptop models, which means you cannot determine the RPM speed.

If its overheating, there may be dust build up in the heatsink, which you can remove using Compressed Air.

Have recently fitted a USB2 card on my computer running XP. My printer (Canon i850) & Scanner (Epson Perfection 3590) is connected to this card but I have not noticed any real improvement in speed over what I was getting with the original USB1 connection. Is there any way of checking that the USB2 is in fact working correctly?

Answer:How do I check USB2 speed?

USB 2.0 will send the data to and from the printer/scanner much quicker than USB 1.1 but you will not notice much difference in speed if any at all because the final output or input is governed by the speed of the scanner or printer engines. Where you will notice the difference is the transfer of large files such as uploading of photos from your camera to your PC.Easy way of telling is if you have a USB 2.0 peripheral such as scanner or printer connected to a 1.1 USB port, you'll see a pop-up message to inform you that its working at the lower speed. I too have the excellent Canon i850 and Lide 80 scanner both running through a USB 2.0 add on PCI card.

I am getting more and more oldish pcs to sort out so thought I would compile a check list to work to. Have I missed anything? are there any more things to add? All suggestions appreciated.Maintenance/Repair On An Oldish/Slow Pc1. clean up the hard drive using the disk tools and add/remove programs to remove unused programs in consultation with the user;2. record system information to list things such as: cd keys; ram; graphics card; sound card and free space on drive; etc.;3. scan for viruses and spyware ?install or update anti-virus software; firewall; adaware; spybot search & destroy and superantispayware;4. run a defragmentation utility;5. remove as many icons from the desktop as possible ? group utilities in 1 folder;6. use msconfig to stop unnecessary programs starting on startup;7. open the case and completely clean it using compressed air and/or vacuum;8. check for and get software updates;9. turn off unnecessary windows services. The order of the above actions can be altered to suit

Answer:check list to speed up an oldish pc

I have been given an oldish/slow PC, that was destined for the skip. I believe the guy who gave it to me, originally got it from Noah, before he sat off for Mount Ararat. I've decided to give Windows and all it's update problems the heave ho! Instead I'm installing a system that was designed specifically with old, slow PC's in mind. It's 'Open Source' software, so it doesn't cost anything either. Its 'Puppy Linux'. Obviously you aren't in the position to change the OS in the systems you are referring to. But if they are old and slow I don't really think anything you do to a Windows based OS is going to speed them up for very long. The machine in question is a Gateway. Before I decided to take this radical step, I did a clean install of Windows. It was quite swift, until I started re-adding the necessary extras. Now it's almost back to square one. When I was give this PC the previous owner threw in a 10GB HDD. Actually I have a memory stick with 8GB. But as Puppy Linux only needs 100MB, I'm going to install it on this drive. After I've put it through it's paces I'll post a thread with my findings. Another good thing about it is, you can install it on as many systems as you want for NO cost!

Hi

I have 3 fans in my case and need to speed them up as my computer is overheating.
How do I check/change the speed of my fans?

-Iroro

Answer:How do I check/change the speed of my fans?

The simplest method would be to restart your PC and go into your BIOS. Most BIOS''s have a "PC Health" option, which will tell you temps and fan speeds.

Depending on the age of your motherboard, it might have options to control fan speeds.

Your specs don't say what CPU you have. You have a pretty good video card, so the obvious things to check are that the fans are big enough (at least 120mm), and you have good airflow

But, there are literally hundreds of threads here about cooling, overheating, and related topics. Rather than restate all of those, it would be worthwhile doing some searches here. You'll find plenty of good advice throughout the many threads.

Hey guys,

I have an Nvidia 7600gt, which has been freezing quite often in games.

I was going to try to underclock the GPU (since it came factory overclocked), to see if that helped any.

What is the most accurate way to check the GPU's clock speed? Also, if I need to overclock/underclock the card, what is the best way to do this?

Answer:How do I check my GPU's clock speed, and what is the best way to over/underclock?

Through the published specifications for the device, and the clocking specifications of the board. You should find the guidance you need at the manufacturer's web site... as well as the manual on disc that came with the 7600gt.
You will be disappointed to learn that your problem usually cannot be fixed by underclocking to "normal."
You have a problem elsewhere in your system... either a driver, memory that is of inadequate speed, heat issues, motherboard glitches, BIOS, and so on.

Hi, been going round in circles getting bits of info so I thought I'd try here. My internet is incredibly slow. In fact my 5Mb seems slower than when I had 2Mb! I have cleared the cache, deleted all temp etc files and checked for spyware etc which slows the system as clean.A few months ago I all but lost the internet which turned out to be a faulty filter. It was previously connected (I know) to the socket using a phone extension. While I waited for the filters to arrive, I took the time to replace the cable with a modem one. Since then, my speeds have shrunk. Webpages take ages to load and video, although at times good quality, can be very jerky on ITV player. In a nutshell, I was showing diagnostic speeds of between 3.4Mbps (peak) and 3.7Mbps (off peak) on a phone cable. With new filters and a modem cable connected to the same socket I am now getting 3.2Mbps (off peak) but only a paultry 2.4 at peak times. If connected to the test socket I get really fast downloads at around 5.6Mbps but I cant leave it there as I lose all my upstairs extensions. I suspect I am getting speeds much slower than shown on the diagnostics also.Any ideas?

Answer:How do I check my real internet speed

If you are running your PCs from extensions and there is a marked difference in speed from the test socket, it might be worth fitting one of these to your master socket click here. I did this and my speed increased around 25 to 30%

What is the best site or way to check connect speed?

I should have a 6mbps connection but it sure doesn't work like 6mbps. When I go to the speed test web sites I get speeds all over the place, some times it's around a mbps or less and sometimes it's 6 to 8 mbps. BUT, when I watch a video often it stops as it plays faster than it downloads, something you would not expect with 6mbps. Download are general around 250kbps to the upper 300's, again not what one would expect with a 6mbps connection. I understand it's not only my connection speed that determines the download speed but the other end as well but when I was getting good speeds (a couple a years ago with Comcast before all the jacked up prices and BS they all play with speed and bandwidth) I would often see download in the mbps range, NEVER see that anymore.

Thanks

Hi there,my second post here and I am still on the same issue for a good year.Short: My Nvidia K4000M is not running full speed in my M6700, unless I un- and replug my power adapter.GPU-Z shows the nvidia GPU to be working at [email protected] speed, not at @2.0 like it should - even under GPU stress (stress test rendering). Once the plug is re-plugged, it goes up to 2.0 and the full GPU MHz clock speed as it should.I assume this is a bug somehow with Win10. Dell are a little slow / not 100% able to test (Dell Germany for me) and I was hoping a fellow M6700 / Win10 owner could do a test.If you would please be willing to help, it would be: Boot up your M6700, run GPU-Z (portable and downloadable on the net) and select the Nvidia GPU and check "Bus Interface" for the bus speed.THEN click on the "?" next to it and do a stress test render - best would be on a second screen as this moves the GPU load to the NVidia. What happens to your bus speed? Does it go to 2.0 or stay at 1.1 under load?(If only 1.1, try unplugging and replugging your mains adapter - retest -> ???)I have tried different drivers, Bios, Optimus on / off, Windows power options obviously (link PCI-E power management state), NVidia power options etc - been through it with NVidia support dev, no luck.A quick test on your side might track down a broader Win10 / M6700 bug though. Thanks for anybody testing this!!Best, Andrew

I have a ThinkPad T61 going on five years old.  Over the last several months it seemed like it might be overheating.  Several times it shut down during heavy activity and/or when the afternoon sun hit the unit in its docking station.  I figured this was due to the move to the more graphics-intensive Windows 7 OS from the original Windows XP.  I did make sure to vacuum out the passages for cooling air. I recently downloaded a free (!) utility called Real Temp from www.techpowerup.com/realtemp.  This showed both cores running at a temperature in the high 80's/low 90's (degrees Centigrade). The cooling fan then intermittently began making sounds that indicated a failing bearing.  I have onsite service so I had Lenovo/IBM come out and replace the fan.  (The fan stopped making noise as soon as I placed the service call, of course.) I then re-ran Real Temp.  The temperatures in both cores were now in the high 40's/low 50's (degrees Centigrade)!!! The fan had apparently been gradually failing for quite some time, with a reduced flow of cooling air, but the problem only became readily apparent when the bearings started making noise.  The air passages were clear, so the fan had to have been running more slowly that it should have been. In the time-honored IT tradition of reading the directions only after solving the problem, I looked at some of the (excellent) documentation on the TechPowerUp site for Real Temp... Answer:Check CPU Temperatures / Replace Fan / Speed Up System

Nice posting

Additional you can do the steps described below before you buy a new fan.:

In most cases dust is blocking the ribs inside the heat sink.
Very often it will help do do the following steps:

Turn off computer
remove battery and power-supply
remove keyboard (see Hardware Maintenance Manual) - if your notebook is in warranty have a look into the parts list, whether the keyboard is a CRU!!!
block the fan propeller with a match or toothpick (do not press onto the propeller hub - you may damage the bearing) - if you do not block the propeller, the fan will work as a dynamo and may damage the board!!
blow with compressed air spray from outside through the ribs into the heatsink
check the space between the propeller and remove fluffs with a pinzette, if there are any
clean carefully the upper side with a vacuum cleaner on lowest power from the blown dust while blocking the fan propeller
attach, keyboard, battery and  test the temperature again

After cleaning the heat sink the temperature will be very lower than before.

Every 30 seconds to 2minutes, vista refreshes its network connection, this can cause lag in games such as WOW and other demanding applications that run off the internet. Some games have been
reported to even crash because of it, making some almost unplayable. But there are programs to change that safely and easily, and it will make everything internet wise, run smoother.

Both of these programs will fix that...and give you faster Online Games:
(only 1 is required...although i do recommend the first one)

Simply select your wireless card if not already selected, click activate VAL, and bye bye lag spikes.

Here is an Example of what this program does
While VAL is inactive, this is your general internet connection
But while activated, this is the result.

Hallo Forum.

I bought now my 4th Toshiba notebook.
This happens 4 weeks ago.

Its a Qosmio X300 with a 9800GTX GPU.
Since 1Week i have an overheating problem. Laptop suddenly switch off after 3-5min.

I used several programms to measure CPU and GPU temperature like everest ultimate, speedfan and GPU-Z.
All Programms show the same, that the GPU temperature raises continued until the laptop switch off.

The temperature raises and raises even when i do nothing with the laptop.
When it switches off than the GPU temperature is approx 130°C!!!!!!!!

Following i did to solve the problem but without any result...
1. i blow the dust with compressed air (after 4weeks their could not as much dust that stop the system)
2. i updated the driver (BIOS, graphic, chipset, storagemanager), all driver from the toshiba homepage, i only and ever use the toshiba driver.
3.

Now i generally want to find out if the fan run properly.
When i switch on the fans shortly run with full power, but after that time i can't hear any kind of fan noise and i can't feel any kind of air blow from cooling grills.
I want to use a programm that show me when the fans are running and how fast the spin.
And also what is the temperature of the GPU and CPU.

IMPORTANT: I want a programm that comes from Toshiba or that is authorized by Toshiba.
Otherwise you never know if you see correct values or not.

Did someone has an answer to my problem?

Any Suggestions?
Did someone can give me... Read more

Answer:Qosmio X300: Overheating issue - How to check Fan speed & GPU temperatures?

> I want to use a program that show me when the fans are running and how fast the spin.
I don?t know if this will help you but there is a 3rd party tool called ?Speed Fan v4.3x?
It watches the fan rotation speed and shows the temperature of the CPU.
But it?s a 3rd party tool and it?s not certified by Toshiba?

Usually it should be noticeable if the cooling modules are working and running? So it?s really strange that you don?t hear anything? maybe there is a hardware issue??? Some kind of fan malfunction or similar ?:|

I think you wouldn?t do something wrong if you would contact the ASP notebook technician for hardware check?

...has the drive locked.

when I was finally able to get chkdsk to run in safe mode I got:

"Truncating badly linked attribute records from file record segment 53267

C:\found.001 is corrupt and unreadable

recovering lost files.

an unspecified error has occurred"

I did manage to fine file0001.chk and delete it.

I also uninstalled any programs I've recently installed.

I ended (in task manager) as many processes as I could and STILL can't run speed disk.

I just get back to the same 'ol UNABLE TO ACCESS DRIVE C: etc.

I have WIN XP home edition sp2 i run Norton Internet Security 2005 and Norton Systemworks 2005, spyware doctor, adaware, and a couple of registry editor cleaners and a bugfixer.

Hi there,
it's a couple of days started to get the above error message(after 4 beeps) when starting my PC. The BIOS info at the H/W monitor section says:
Vcore Voltage: 4,08V (in red colour),
3,3V Voltage:4,08V (in red colour),
5V Voltage: 6,85V (in red colour),
12V Voltage: 16,32V (in red colour)

CPU FAN ~ 1700 rpm

Besides that, the battery don't keep the time, have to set it again most of the times, probably has been exhausted(The mobo is about 8-9 years old).
BIOS phoenix v6.00PG ACPI BIOS Revision 0401.

Any idea what is going wrong? The power supply maybe as read in other threads?

thanks
