250GB Hard drive only shows 120GB.

Question: 250GB Hard drive only shows 120GB.

Hi all,

A friend of mine is having problems with a 250GB Seagate Hard drive.

It was bought from a computer shop and they fitted it for him. When he took it home the computer didnít recognise it. It then recognised it as 250gb, but his Windows OS wouldnít work properly (it would some times work and other times wouldnít).

He had the drive refreshed, re-formatted and had the partitions removed and rebuilt. Its then that 130GB disappeared.

Does anyone know what may have caused this (sorry I havenít given much info, but this is all I know) and if so, whether itís fixable. I have suggested that the drive be taken back to the shop that it was bought from, under warranty.

If you need any more info, please ask, and I will try and find out.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: 250GB Hard drive only shows 120GB.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I bought a Seagate hybrid hard drive listed at 250GB. when I look at the disk using Acronis disk Director it show the disk size as 110GB. I know the actual size is usually smaller than the listed size but more than 50% smaller? Seems bogus to me.

I have recently fitted a Hitachi Deskstar 250gb Hard drive(model:HDS722525VLAT80) to my computer.

After Re-instaling windows (xp) the drive was showing as 125gb.

I have been told this is because windows xp will only support 125gb without service pack 2.

I have now downloaded SP2. but it still shows as 125gb.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this????????????

Answer:250gb Hard drive shows as 125gb

When you partitioned and formatted the drive, it didn't have any service packs, so it limited the format to what you see. If you go into Disk Management, you'll find that you now have about half the drive listed as "Unallocated". You can create a partition on this section and format it, then it will be available for use as a new drive letter.

Recently my native HDD (on M30) crashed and I have upgaded it with Western Digital WD2500BEVE 250 gb. Disk.
But when I boot the sytem it appears that only 120 gb is available!

Is it possible to make the notebook use the whole capacity of the HDD? Whow?

Answer:Satellite M30 sees only 120GB of installed WD 250GB HDD?

The point is that not all HDD sizes are supported due to the BIOS HDD size limitation.
Easy said: BIOS don?t support all HDDs.

I have read many threads here in the forum about the max possible HDD sizes and it seems that a 120GB HDD is the larges one which could be used in the M30 Satellite.

You would ask now for a BIOS update. Am I right?

Well, unfortunately, the BIOS update will not improve the situation and will not allow using the bigger HDD?s as 120GB :(

Best regards

Any 3.5" drive at 2T or under should work fine.  Upgrading the CPU would mean buying used - these CPUs went out of production not long after your system was current - and that was a decade ago.

Hey Everyone,

I just got a Maxtor 120GB Hard drive, and I currently have a 30GB Maxtor in my computer at the moment. I know a lot about computers, but hard drive images are one of the few things I have little experience with.

I would like to keep my operating system, XP Home, and all of its programs, files, settings, etc all together. Basically, the currect exact state it is right now as if I'm on my 30GB. I've seen my school use images to put the same image on like 20 computers.

Trust me, I'v had to re-load program after program on my dads computer and I'm already sick of doing it, so I want to avoid that lol.

I'm pretty sure there is a way do to this, and if so, can you tell me how, or give me a link to something I can read so I can pull this off. Don't want to put a fresh install of XP and reload everything and re install programs and all that stuff.

I bought this Western Digital 120gb hard drive to replace my other 8gb hard drive. I've used 10 and 12gb hard drives before in this computer. No problems till I go to boot it up with this new one. The computer doesn't see the new hard drive. It just stops on searching for hard drive. I can't even format it. Not looking to setup as Master/Slave. This is my second 120gb hard drive from Western Digital cause I thought the first one was bad. But now this one is doing the same thing. Just want this big hard drive to work alone. HELP!!!!

Hey guys, I'm Junior and I'm new here.

I have a Compaq Deskpro EP running a Pentium III 450MHz processor and 320MB RAM along with Win XP Pro.

I recently ran out of hard drive space as I only had 6GB. I found and purchased a WD 120GB unit at Best Buy but I'm having trouble with installation.

I used the Data Lifeguard tools program that came with the drive to copy the boot files along with the rest of the information on the 6GB drive. When I then install the drive as a master, it won't boot; it stays stuck right after the Compaq splash screen.

I'm not sure what to do next. Is there a readily-available BIOS upgrade so the motherboard recognizes the drive and size of it? Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:120GB Hard Drive, Need New BIOS

With this older system you will have to format it and install Windows on it,where you get to select "large hd support" or something like that.Your present OS does not support this HD.

I have a problem running my extra WD 120JB HD as a slave. It's on the same IDE slot as my master harddrive (which is the exact same HD). Here's the problem: If I plug up the power to the slave drive, and turn on the computer, it'll turn on for maybe 3 secs then turn off. So I unplug the power from the slave drive, and it'll just turn on fine. I've set the jumpers for the slave drive to run as a slave. I don't get what's going on. I've run hard drives as slaves on my computer before and it works fine, but now its just turning off. Any help will be very appreciated. Thanks!

any way to retrieve data ? if not any way to reformat?

Answer:Unrecognized 120GB hard drive unallocated

As long as the disk is still recognized by Windows, you can always try a data recovery program to scan the disk for lost content. Depending on what happened to it, you might be able to restore the partition, or restore (some of) the files.

Formatting is just a matter of going to the Disk Management module in computer management and selecting the disk there. You can create a partition and format it from there.

I got a Western Digital 120GB external hard drive last night, to supplement my laptop's 30GB drive. I intend to use it mainly to store mp3s (right now I have around 40 gigs, but I anticipate it growing rapidly soon), and perhaps some movies too, occasionally. My question is, should I partition the drive? I've read some guides on parititioning hard drives, but since mine will be almost exclusively for mp3s and video files, most of the online guides and articles are kind of irrelevant (since they assume broader use of the drive).

A side issue -- I don't know if anyone with a WD external drive has had this issue, but when I press the power button off to shutdown the drive, the blue light around the switch blinks 10 times, then stays on. It does not turn off -- even after I close all applications. What I can do is either hold the switch down for a few seconds (which I assume is not good for the drive), or put my laptop on sleep mode, then turn the drive off (pressing the power switch once to turn it off works just fine now), and revive my laptop. Roundabout, but it works. WD's online reference section suggests I turn off all applications (tried it, didn't work), or turn off indexing on the drive (didn't find a way to do that). Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Issues with WD 120GB External USB Hard Drive

My family's PC has a relatively new WD drive and NONE of your symptom. XP powers off the PC in 10 seconds. More or less.

Indexing is a service. When turned off, it can't run. Start > Control... > Admin... > Services > Indexing... > Disable it.

Yes, Indexing option shows in the hard disk property. I wouldn't touch that.

I bought this a few months ago on the recommendation of someone in this forum.Despite my difficulties with the Retrospect software, it appears to work well, and quite quickly, given that my PC only has USB1.1.However, there are a couple of things that make me a little nervous. The first is that there are times when the drive is powered down and yet emits quite a loud buzzing noise (and the vibrations can be felt in both the keyboard and my desk), although most of the time it is fairly quiet. There seems to be no reason why it should suddenly become noisy when powered down - I do not recall it making this noise when it is actually backing up.Secondly, I still use floppy discs for backing up small files. I notice that, when doing so, the Maxtor powers up, even though I have not taken action to do this.Any thoughts from Maxtor owners, please?

As far as I can remember the Satellite 1900-303 was delivered with the 30GB HDD.
So in my opinion the 120GB HDD size is a little bit too big and I presume the notebook BIOS will not recognize this HDD!!!

I think you can use a 40GB, 60GB and maybe a 80GB HDD.

PS: you should search for the HDD with the enhanced IDE (ATA-5) interface!!!

Good luck and have a nice day

i recently bought an internal seagate 250gb hard drive and when i installed it it is only finding 232gb i was wondering how i can access the other 18gbs if that is possible. i have seen the 137gb barrier but not something like this. all help would be appreciated.

Answer:250gb hard drive not full 250

its the way that windows reports space compared to the hdd manufactures. the hd manufactures report a meg as 1000 KB, while windows reports it as 1024 KB. no over a large amount of storage (say 80gb) the number will shrink, but the space is still there (will be reported as 74.5GB in windows). so what you have is normal.

Answer:Medion 250gb Hard Drive

You could probably disconnect the drive and use it in another external caddy. Before buying another caddy you need to know whether the drive is a SATA or PATA (IDE) probably a SATA if only two years old.

Hi beautiful people,

Currently im using a 60gb partition for windows 7 32 bits ultimate in a SATA HD (AIHC mode), i've been told in the past that it is not recommended to use the entire HD as one partition cause slows the system (the needle works more), is that still true?

Answer:Windows 7 in a 250GB Hard Drive

To a certain extent yes, It is better to have one partition in the top of your drive to hold your system files (programs, drivers, etc) and another partition to hold your data. This will help your system run faster.

However, you cannot just rely on this alone. You should do regular disk cleanup using a program like CCleaner (don't use the registry cleaner option) and defragment your hard drive regularly as well.

Hello, We have a customer who has an R40 that we replaced the drive with at their request for more drive space. The biggest drive we could go with was a 250GB drive. Since we installed the drive, the R40 has found it way back to the shop a couple times for a bad hard drive. We use only NEW drives. The drives have been WD 250 ide notebook drives. The original drive was a 40GB in size. In talking with a colleague form another shop, he suggested that the power supply and battery could play some role in this problem. The laptop battery does not hold a charge. The OS is XP Pro with SP2, the computer does see the entire 250GB when installed, this is seen in My Computer and in the BIOS. Can anyone give a suggestion as to what might be causing the larger drives to not last in the R40. The R40 isa Type 2723-LU2. I would appreciate any advice in troubleshooting this. It could be time for her to move to a new laptop. Thanks, Peter

Answer:R40 on it's third 250GB hard drive in four months

well i don't think the R40 has the shock protection system that came in the later T and R series. This means if the laptop experience constant shocks of some magnitude, this may cause faults to develop in the larger hdd, as the fault tolerance level of these new drives are slightly less than the smaller capacity drives. Usually bad sectors or other mechanical faults may develop, if the the drive head routinely crashes into the platter.

I attempted to add a 250 GB hard drive to my PC, 3.0 Ghz, GA-8S648FX MB with 1 Gig DDR Ram. When I boot my PC and go into the bios, it sees the PC, however when the PC boots it doesn't show it in control panel or in "My Computer". I am running Windows XP Pro 2nd Edition and am frustrated. I have the most current bios for my motherboard and Gigabyte says it should be no problem on their end. So what am I doing wrong? I have tried both setting drives as Cable Select and also Master/Slave. I have tried setting it up with the original Windows XP Pro disk but it only sees 137MB. Any ideas? I got a real good deal so I bought 2 of these 250 GB drives for my PCs, too bad they can't see the. BTW, both PCs are the same motherboard only difference is that one of the PCs is a 2.8 Ghz CPU (INTEL). Thanks

Answer:PC won't format 250GB hard drive

Try going to the drive manufacturers website and download their tools and use this to format. There is an issue with drives above 137mb but I thought this was solved with XP.

Hello guys.. newbie here.. just want to seek help regarding HARD Drive replacement , for some reason my laptop wont boot upit only does lights (LED) but will not continue to boot or show the logo/ BIOS so we suspected probably HArdisk problem - in that sense we decided just to BUY a new hard drive and replace the existing 160GB with a 250GB.. Now im not sure if this is compatible enough with the MoBO..and the bios..MODEL : LENOVO 3000 G430 just bought it 4months ago here in Hong Kong.. Advice & tips is appreciated.

Answer:is it ok to put a 250GB Hard drive replacement?

You probably can't update the bios in the machine's current condition and if it's only 4 months old that's probaly unwarranted.Check the size to make sure it slot 1, 2 or 3 ( Different thickness) and bring the old HD with you to the store. Also check to see if the HD is IDE, SATA or PATA. It should say on the HD. If not then check out the spec sheets for your machine. Didn't save them? Try doing a search on here. Good luck with that though, I've seen rubber duckies drown with the level of support that Lenovo offers.Ensure that you have the recovery disks or make them any way you can.Good luck to ya bro.

Hi all, hope you can help...

I recently bought a PC with a 120GB hard drive, and have put Windows Vista on it. Unfortunately, although the 120GB is recognised in BIOS, only 60GB of this is visible in 'My Computer' in Windows.

My PC spec is as listed on the following webpage:- SR5027

Unfortunately, I have voided my warranty due to some upgrades I made. Any ideas as to how I might obtain full usage of my hard drive would be much appreciated!

Answer:Solved: 120GB hard drive, but Vista only recognises 60GB

It may just not be partitioned. Right Click on Computer and select Manage. The select Disk Management and see if there's any unallocated space on the drive. If so you can create another partition or resize the existing partition.

Hi there, I've got a 250gb maxtor HD and it can't be detected in bios or something is wrong. WHENEVER its connected (either on its own or with another drive), it says "error loading OS".
(PC boots fine with my other Maxtor 120gb HD)

On some sites it says to set Bios HD Access to LARGE instead of auto/lba etc

BUT - my bios doesnt show me such a setting when i go into HD config screen. I know what screen it should be on, but believe me, there is no "large" option for HD access.

Motherboard = MSI MS-6567

Can someone pls help me?? Thanks so much

Answer:BIOS won't recognise 250gb Hard Drive

Well, error loading OS only shows that it can't load an OS. Do you have an OS on that drive?
At bootup, your BIOS should list the drives it detects. Do you see the Maxtor in the list (next to the optical drive)?

That's a rather old motherboard. It could be that it simply does not support hard drives larger than ~130GB. And I can't see a BIOS update that would fix it either.. You can try updating to the latest BIOS and hope that it fixes the problem of course.

The next stage of upgrading this laptop is to clone the 500GB original drive to a 250GB Samsung SSD using Aomei Backupper Standard 3.2 and Aomei Partition Assistant 6.0

When I go to Disk Management I find that the disk has 6 partitions. Most of which are probably linked to recovering the OS back to Win 8.1
I would like to get rid of all unessential disk space and so I thought I would ask for your suggestions.
At this moment all the files including Windows.old are located on the C: drive.
Many thanks,

Hello, I've recently done a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and one of my harddrives is not showing up correctly. The harddrive itself is my Local Disk D, it hasn't got any system files on it however it is displaying at the wrong size:

The problem lies in the fact that on boot my Computer's BIOS detects the harddrive as a 233GB harddrive. This is not a problem as I understand that the harddrive itself isn't the exact size as what it says on the box, however the Windows 7 installation and Windows itself only detects the harddrive as being 148gb.

What I've Tried Doing:
I've tried different things to resolve this issue. I've looked at the Disk Management, but there are no extra partitions and I've also looked at the harddrive in Partition Manager which again only picked up 149gb and no unallocated space.
I've run a partition recovery tool in Partition Manager which did not detect any lost partitions containing the rest of the harddrive.
My System:

Answer:IDE Maxtor 250gb Hard drive Problem.

Hello samboyd93. Welcome to the forum.

The only thing I can think of is that the drive is set as a SATA2 drive on an older computer that only does SATA1 (please fill in your "My System Specs" to help avoid these kinds of guesses) although I doubt it.

If you look at the back of the HDD there are jumper pins. Setting a jumper sets the SATA speed on most drives. You may need to consult the HDD's documentation to see what the different jumper positions do. Every manufacturer has a different setup.

I would try setting the drive as SATA1 to test. But both drives should be at the same setting. Also try plugging the problem drive into a different port or using a different SATA cable. Can't hurt, might help.

You should also go into your BIOS and check the settings for that drive and compare them to the settings for the other drive. They should be the same.

Hope that helps.

This past Friday, the 3rd December, 2004 while in the middle of a System Restore, my system was interrupted by a local power outage. Since then my Maxtor 5000/120 GB External Hard Drive has been acting oddly. I first noticed a problem when rebooting the system when a "CHKDisk" for my Maxtor Drive was scheduled, which seemed to take quite a long time during the first of 3 phases. During the first phase it simply kept listing files on the Maxtor which were "unreadable". I simply escaped from this and attempted to reboot. Each time I reboot, the "CHKDisk" begins again, even though it's easy to cancel it.

The next issue relates to "Add/Remove" Programs under the Control Panel for Windows. The Maxtor Drive prevents the "Add/Remove" Programs window from being populated.

All scans by NORTON are also prevented when it gets to scanning the Maxtor drive.

While it is usually easy to access any file in the Maxtor Drive, now it is laborious and no file opens without excessive wait times. All files appear to be there. I already reformatted the drive from Fat to NTFS at time of purchase.

Six times I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Maxtor software and disconnected the drive and reconnected it only to face the same problems I previously listed.

I contacted DELL, my cpu manufacturer but they were of little assistance...their Tech first had me go online to check for adware and spamware, then suggested I contact Maxto... Read more

Answer:Maxtor 5000/120GB External Hard Drive Presenting Problems...Can Anyone Help?

I think your hard drive got damaged because of the power outage.
If I where you, I would backup what I need from the hard drive and reformat it.
I don't think it's a problem with the software. It is more likely that it is the hard drive itself that is causing the problem, formatting the drive could solve your problems.

Hi guys,

I had got my friend's 120GB LaCie portable hard drive and connected a day back. It was working fine, but AVG antivirus detected 1 or more viruses and cleaned them automatically.

Now I connect the hard drive and it is not recognized at all... Seems AVG has removed some required system files. Am running Windows XP SP3.

Kindly advise me how I can make the drive work as before.
Please this is pretty urgent.
Thanks a bunch in advance.

Answer:LaCie 120GB portable hard drive is not recognized after AVG antivirus scan

Did you try this on another computer? It may not have hurt the drive. Could just screw up the drivers that control it.

I have searched long and hard and need help please.

I have a P4 2.8 CPU with 512 DDR400 Ram and WinXP Pro installed. My hard drive is a Seagate Barracuda 120GB (Ultra) ATA. I have replaced cable to manufacturer's spec Ultra ATA cable, black interface used for master and jumper on Cable Select. I do not use the slave on this cable. I have checked BIOS and auto detected drive again. All seems fine here.

I have tested transfer rate on this drive with HD tach and HD Tune and get around 2.8 MB/sec. I experience very slow boot up and PC in general is very slow to start and execute programs.

I have removed all spyware and other threats with no effect.

Answer:Hard Drive transfer rate very slow (Seagate Barracuda 120GB)

Make sure you have hard disk DMA enabled in BIOS and see if Windows is using it.

I'd like to upgrade my current HD to the Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive. My computer is 7 years old this June, so I'm curious about whether it's compatible or not. My current HD's specs are located here:

Specifically: Embedded Controller Interface: (40 pin) EIDE
Physical Dimensions (H x W x D): 1" x 5.78" x 4"

I have the most recent BIOS update for my computer which was released in 2002. I run XP SP2, PIII 735 MHz, 256 Megs RAM. Do you think this upgrade would work or would I just need to toss the idea and get a new computer?

Also, the HD's specs are located here:

Thanks so much,

Answer:Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive

The 7200 hard drive wil give better data transfer, but on your system, p111, 735mhz, increasing your ram would help, I would say, more.
XP runs better with more memory.
Upgrading to a later cpu, and motherboard, would give your old pc, a new lease of life.

Hi there,

My Sister owns a ASUS laptop running Windows Vista and has a portable hard drive (WD 250GB) which she uses to back up her files and to store her business files and personal files (music, photos, videos etc.) however, i plugged it into my MacBook to transfer files onto it. Now when i try to plug it back into her Asus, it doesn't recognise it and when "Computer" is opened the hard drive is displayed as "Local Disk (G". I am able to double click the text, but a window pops up saying "You need to format the disk in drive G: before you can use it." But i do not want to format the hard drive because the files on it aren't backed up. I've tried plugging it back into my MacBook, but that doesn't recognise it either.

Any help would be fantastic!

Answer:WD 250GB Portable Hard Drive requesting format

you may need to rename it as for example in her comp that may have been E drive and in mac F drive so drives have gotten mixed up
try vista disc management if you can see it there change drive letter, or try in safe mode, ie connect drive with comp off then re boot into safe mode

I recently upgrade my PC, and have installed a NEW 250 GB S-ATA Hard drive.
My bios has been upgraded, and when in the BIOS setup it recognizes the drive as what it should be, 250GB, When I was installing XP and creation a partition thru the intall progam it only let me setup a 131GB partition. I set up a 100GB partition and left the rest to play with afterwards. In the Computer management/disk manager in XP I have my 100GB partition and only 30GB of unallocated space to work with.

Does anyone know how I can resolve this problem?

Answer:250GB Hard drive, Windows only allows 131GB partitionable

Since this was a fresh install you need to add SP2. XP came out with a 137G limitation which was addressed with SP1. SP2 has replaced SP1.

If you only want a single 250G partition there are a couple of ways to address it.

1) Install SP2 and then run Partition Magic to resize the primary partition to pick up the extra 150G.

2) Slipstream SP2 into your copy of XP and then start over from scratch with a fresh install.

Hello all. I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a 250gb maxtor hard drive. I have just purchased my second external case off of ebay and it does not work!!

The first one was no name brand, it says "Awesome" on the case and has lights that light up around the case. It said on the web it supports up to 250gb, and on the auction. When I plug it in, it recognizes it and I can view an play files off of it for maybe 5 minutes then it says "USB device not recognized" and gives errors like "this usb device can run faster on USB 2.0" which it is in a 2.0 port. Funny thing is right when I got it, it worked for a few hours, it kept working pretty well at first for maybe a week, then it just stops working after a few minutes.

So I purchased another one on ebay, another non name brand, it said it supports up to 250 gb, and this one it recognizes it for a few seconds and then it is suddently not on my computer at all. I have checked the device manager under both of these items and for drivers, etc. Everything seems to be working fine. I even downloaded a file that helps your computer recognize high disk space, although I was told on XP I don't have to do that. So what do you all think?? Is it just the cheap external case?? Ive been reading around and noticed that problems like this are fairly common. Im having troubles finding something that applies to me. I have a Dell Dimensin 8100 P4 1.4 GHZ, its sorta old i guess, it was a relatively new P4 computer i think. I just bought a Hitachi GSX 250GB ATA-100 IDE 8MB Buffer hard drive and havent been able to get it to be recognized at more than 127GB. I tried updating my BIOS (went from Revision A02 to AO9) but that didnt make any difference on the drive. DO i have to wipe the drive and start over with the blank drive or what? I also read that XP Home needs SP1 to recognized more than 127GB so i downloaded SP2 and it didnt make a difference. If anyone can clear up why this isnt working thatd be great. Thanks Alot

I'm trying to upgrade from the 30GB Toshiba harddrive that came with the unit to a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 250GB EIDE drive.
I take the swap the 30GB out for the 250GB put in a bootable version of XP SP3 CD-ROM and nothing - no sign that any power is getting to the drive.
The CDROM tries to write boot files to the hard drive but nothing happens.

Same thing happens when I try to use the 3cd pack from Toshiba or the recovery CD from Norton Ghost.
The computer is not seeing the drive. Put the old 30GB drive in and it boots up right away.

My BIOS settings show it to be set up for EIDE and to boot from the CDROM. What steps am I missing?

Answer:Satellite 2410 wont see new 250GB hard drive

It looks like the BIOS does not recognize the new HDD? I assume it?s too large?
The Satellite 2410 series is old and I assume it will not support bigger HDD?s than 120GB due to the 28bit LBA

So try with smaller HDD like 80GB or 100GB.

After formatting it by booting from the xp cd provided by Evesham, a blue screen appeared as some .sys file had caused it to crash. Now the drive only shows up as 8gb. Furthermore, when booting from the xp cd, the screen jus shows up as black. I have put it into my own system and the same thing happens. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello all great website!

Compaq Presario 7000 series (model #7QSM11) using Windows ME, AMD 1332 mhz processor. My sister's computer. Hard drive was a 60GB, but it died. So I bought a new hard drive actually tried a 160GB first but thought the 137GB issue was the problem so now I am trying a 120GB western digital Caviar.

I found and successfully flashed the latest bios. (ROM date 3/28/02-786K2 Family). I checked the bios and it does see all 120GB. But when I goto partition it, I run into problems. Three methods tried: I tried to use Western Digitals included CD-ROM, even created the DOS boot floppy that they recommended on another system. Doesn't work keeps coming up with an error that something like A:\Auto???.exe not found. I checked the floppy that file is there?? Comes up whether I am booting from the floppy or from the CD-ROM.

So I tried fdisk from a Windows ME boot disk. Fdisk will only find/or report 24GB. I cleared the partition and tried using the Compaq restore disks but they came up with the same problem.
Am I right in thinking that this is a Windows ME issue?
Can you tell me how to fix this problem?

My computer is a Dell 8100, also running Windows ME but with a Intel P4, I installed a 200GB hard drive and had to flash the bios, and then I am not sure if it was Maxtor's DDO dynamic disk overlay or Intel's application accelerator, or the Flashed Bios, but Windows ME sees the whole hard drive.

I am so frustrated, I am not completely stupi... Read more

I'd like to get a 250GB SSD in my T450s when I order it, but Lenovo is charging $280 for the upgrade. So I'm thinking to order a T450s with a conventional 500GB spinning hard drive and buy a Crucial 256GB SSD elsewhere for $105. I would save $175 plus have a 500GB hard drive which I could erase and format and put into an external enclosure and use for other stuff. My question is -- I'm going to order the T450s with the Windows 7 Professional installation, so can I easily swap out the 500GB hard drive for the Crucial 256GB SSD (I'm ordering from elsewhere), and reinstall/recover Windows 7 Pro from recovery discs? I'm assuming that recovery discs are included or can be downloaded. Or, could I restore to the Crucial 256GB SSD from the recovery partition on the 500GB hard drive? How would I do this?

Answer:Order T450s with 500GB hard drive, upgrade to 250GB SSD

Download and install Macrium Reflect.  There's a free version that makes clones.  Clone the factory drive to the SSD, then swap it out.  You don't get recovery disks.   The recovery software, though, has the option of creating a recovery disk set from the recovery partition that is installed on the drive.  So, you could burn the disks and put them away as your recovery solution.  When you clone the factory drive, you have the option of selecting which partions to include on the cloned drive.  If you've burned the disks first, you can simply not select the recovery partition (which is typically lettered "Q") and just clone the system reserved and Windows partitions and save yourself the disk space on the SSD. Once you've got it set up to your satisfaction, and you have the disks, then format the factory drive to use for your other purposes.

We have a Lenovo laptop that had some bad sectors. Was showing up as completely full even though the HDD was only using 120GB, WINDIRSTAT confirmed this.

We were only able to clone sector by sector from the bad HDD to a brand-new 1 TB SSD and it boots into Windows and you can load programs just fine. The problem is now the new SSD still reflects that the drive is full – so something must've carried over from the old hard drive that's causing it to reflect the wrong usage amount.. We still experienced this strange problem.

It wasn't only until we completed 3 different check disk w/repair did the drive show the correct numbers in Computer & disk management.

When you Try to connect the SSD to any computer it shows up as a full 1tb.

Unable to clone down to a smaller SSD: only when the SSD is within the original laptop does it start to clone to a smaller SSD but halts after going through 80% with Easeus TODO, which is the only cloner so far to show
the accurate capacity.

We need some guidance with this one, never seen this before.

we appreciate any suggestions to reinstall windows, but this post is seeking expertise in repairing the issue as everything else appears to be intact.

When I check the properties of my hard disc drive I do not manage to sum up the capacity to the specified 120GB (not used but available).
I only get about 56GB+51GB divided on a C:\ and D:\ drive.

Are there participations of the hard disc drive that initially are hided for me as a user?
Anybody who know the answer?

Answer:NB100-12N - 120GB shows only 56GB + 51GB

How did you check this HDD size?

If you want you can access the Disk Management and could check if some hidden partitions have been created.

I?m not quote sure how the HDD has been partitioned on NB100 but Vista preinstalled notebooks are equipped with one hidden partition.
This hidden partition belongs to the Vista and contains the Vista backup files.
But as I said, this is only a case on notebooks with preinsatalled Vista OS.

In your case it could be possible that this issue is probably due to different ways of calculating the size, either using the decimal or a binary system:

In a decimal system 1 GB = 1,000 MB = 1,000,000 KB = 1,000,000,000 Byte
But most operating systems calculate with factor 1024 instead of 1000: 1 GB= 1024 MB= 1024 x1 024 KB= 1,073,741,824 Byte.
Because of this, all drives seem to be around 1.074 times smaller under the operating system than they really are.

_For example:_
An 80 GB drive can store 80,000,000,000 bytes, but the operating system divides this number by 1.074 and therefore shows the drive as having a capacity of 74.5 GB only. But this does NOT mean that you loose 5.5 GB.
It is still the same number of bytes that can physically be stored in both ways of calculating!

Hello and welcome Kishor now I have gut feeling that drive night have been damaged by the sudden power failure it could have affected the platters themselves or the controller unit.
Now I think you need to test the drive using this SeaTools for Windows | Seagate or a purely physical surface test see this Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition. run it and see my pic on how to set that up. It tests the actual surface of the platters and to some extent the ability of the read / write heads.

Hi, I have a Lenovo T430s. The laptop has two hard drives, a 256gb SSD and a 500gb HDD. Both show in Device Manager but only the SSD shows up in exploer. 500gb HDD: HGST HTS725050A7E630256GB SSD: LITEONIT LMT-256M6M mSATA 256GB I updated the drivers and they said they are updated. Troubleshooting that I haven't tried is going into BIOS.  I'm not sure, or don't know how to get into BIOS, and when I do, I do not know what to try once I get in. I'm not sure why both hard drives are not showing up in explorer on it's own. Details of my computer:

Answer:Detect both hard drives in device manager but only one hard drive shows in explorer

Good day and welcome to the community.
Have you created a partition on the 500gb drive?

With my 2009 Seagate 500 GB sata hard drive, the re-allocated sectors count shows 2 bad sectors, in the Ubuntu 10.04 disk utility for the smart data. In this multi-boot desktop PC the XP with a drive monitor program called, Active Smart shows this drive health status as good, including that reallocated sectors count item, so is this not to worry about for now, or what. I do monitor the hard drive temperature, which does stay cool enough, in the seventies up to about 80* F.
Or can this be caused by mixed partitioning methods, since the new way is now align to MiB, and not align to cylinder as it was. I used the GParted tool to create and change partitions when it was set as default to align to cylinder, but then I recently used both my Vista Disk Manager, and the newer version of GParted to re-size some of the partitions, which both now use that align to MiB method by default, which often has near 1 MB gaps between partitions then.

I am trying to access files on a hard drive from a different computer which will no longer load the OS. I have connected the hard drive using a usb adapter. When I plug it in, I get a notice that the device is ready to use, but it does not show up in Computer.

It is visible in the disk manager. There is no drive letter assigned and the options to do so are grayed out. Most of the options in device manager are grayed out, except for 'delete volume' and 'help'.

Answer:hard drive w/ usb adapter- drive shows in disk manager, not computer

I have a backup drive that we had used for for a while (WD 6000aak), previously in an external drive enclosure. I connected it today via USB to find that the computer has the driver installed, the drive appears in the Devices list, but it does not show in My Computer. In "Disk Management" the drive appears but is not assigned a drive letter. Also, all the options for the volumes are greyed out and cannot be selected - thus I cannot assign a drive letter.

I have tried this on multiple computers. I have also removed it from the enclosure and connected the drive via SATA... the result is identical. I checked the bios and the drive appears there.

The drive does spin when powering up. It is hot (even though it cannot really be accessed).

Any suggestions? Is this drive done?

Answer:Hard drive installed, shows in Drive Mngmnt, in Bios, but not in Comp.

Go to Disk Management, in the bottom part of the screen, right click the drive, select 'change drive letter or path', next window select add, next window select a drive letter from the drop down box. For an external drive it's best to use a letter lower in the alphabet. If disk management wants to initialize and format it, don't do it if there is data on it you don't want to lose. If no data or if you don't care, go ahead. It will show in computer when a drive letter is assigned.

My computer failed to boot a few weeks ago. I took out the C drive and put it in an external drive case on my other computer in order to retrieve outlook emails, bookmarks, etc. The drive is 250 gigs. It only shows an 'N' drive, 130 gigs worth of data, which must have been a partition. The C drive isn't there. Is it corrupted? Will be I be able to retrieve anything from the C drive?  If the drive is corrupted, why does one partition show up and not the other?

Answer:Hard drive doesn't show C drive, but shows the other partition

I had a similar situation. I was able to get data off the drive using a Ubuntu live cd. Burn the iso to cd, put the drive back in the computer and boot to the cd. If you can see the drive in Places then you should be able to get your data off. Please note the "if" and "should".Good luck.

I installed a new 500gb hard drive in my acer laptop.  Ran the system disc.  But it won't show my 4gb of ram or my 500gb hard drive.  Shows my old config.  What's up with that?

Answer:Installed new hard drive. Still shows old hard drive.

No idea what you are talking about. You need to explain IN DETAIL. What shows your old config? What does ram have to do with the hd? What are you talking about?

Answer:Hard drive shows 35gig, even though it`s an 80gig drive?

That other "unknown" partition would most likely be your ACER Recovery Partition where you can reinstall your OS in the event of a windows OS being corrupted..

I've connected an external USB drive, but when I go to My Computer it shows it as a network drive. In addition, it gives it the same name as the mapped network drive that already exists there. When I change the name of the external drive there, it then changes the name of the mapped network drive, so again they both have the same name, although the drive letters are different. Any ideas how to make the external drive appear where it belongs in My Computer, under Hard Disk drives?

I'm also seeing some other odd behavior on this computer, and since it may be related I'll mention it. When I first opened my Computer, it showed the same networked drive repeatedly, with every letter from F thru Z. I deleted them all except one, but now every time I reboot, I get a logon connect dialog that asks to reconnect one of them. So with each reboot it is adding back one of the duplicate mapped networked drives that I had deleted. I expect it will eventually end up with all the alphabet letters like it was when I first sat down at this computer.

My main concern is to get the external hard drive to appear where it belongs.

I bought an internal SATA drive to connect external to clone my new computer. After cloning the the new computer to this drive it only shows 225GB total space on the drive. Is there anyway to correct this where I see 1TB on the drive

Answer:1TB hard drive shows only 225 GB

Hi was the drive you cloned 225gb? . If so you seem to have made a direct copy of the drive so the new size of the 1tb is 225gb.You will need to delete the 225gb partition and re make a new partition of 1tb and format it you can use Disk Mangement to do this. To use the whole 1tb it would be better to use backup software like "todo backup"

This is weird.

I have a newer system...(see specs...) and it uses a Sata drive. Then, on the IDe, I have plugged in a 200 gig hard drive.

I leave my computer on at all times, and after I have left it on over night, the drive disappears!

I have desktop links to my drives, and the one that links to my secondary gets the terror inspiring red question mark next to the symbol of the drive.

When I restart the is there. However, when I let it go to screen saver mode, (which eventually shuts off the screen and turns off the monitor...), god knows when the drive disappears.

ANy ideas or help please??? Thanks friends!

My laptop using Windows XP had a virus. The Geek Squad said to erase it clean i.e. put it back to it's default settings. I backed up the files to an external HD and put it back to it's default setting. Now C: drive shows it's almost full but thought I erased everything when I cleaned it. The virus is gone. How do I get my space back so put back what I saved.

Answer:Shows Hard Drive Full It's Not

go to search and search all files on hard drive, once done arrange by size and see what is taking all of your space. report back.

for kicks go to C:\WINDOWS\Temp first and make sure you dont have tmp file eating your space

I have a Maxtor 500 gig Hard drive. I got it a while back as a gift and never had a chance to use it until I got an external case for it. However, when I first started the HDD up, my computer only registered a 150 gig hard drive. I thought that was odd, so I tried to reformat it, but I kept on getting only 150. I tried atleast 3 different external cases and they all gave me the same result.

Does anyone know how to fix this or have anything that I can try to see what's wrong with my Hard drive?

windows 8 cant find my hard drive on install. My antivirus pick up a virus and i could n`t fix it so i rebooted my system and now on restart it says ,your system has run into a problem and needs to shut down and it just keeps doing this over and over so i decided to reformat my pc and now my hard drive wont show up..

Answer:no hard drive shows up on the install

Check the BIOS to make sure the HDD is being properly recognized. If it's not, it most likely has failed & will need to be replaced. Try running a HDD diagnostics program.

A friend of mine has a strange problem. He just bought a Lenovo 3000 laptop with windows vista on it, and a hard drive of 80 GB.
A few days after he bought the computer, the hard drive started to show that it's more and more full, and after a few days it got completely full. But he didn't put anything new on it during these few days. I looked at the content of the hard drive with spacemonger, and it showed that the disk is really full. But when we calculated how much was space was actually occupied, it was only about 40 GB (10 GB vista stuff, 10 GB music, 20 GB pictures, a little bit of documents). I made some space by disabling hibernation and deleting some pics and music, but after a few days the disk got full again.
I reformatted the hard drive (only one on this computer) and installed everything fresh: thunderbird, firefox, office 2007, endnote, ccleaner, nod32. There was 40 GB free. A few days later and no new additions or installations, the hard drive is full again!!!
Anti virus/spyware scan is clean.
What could be the problem?

Answer:hard drive shows that it's full but it's not really

here's your system requirements for Vista OS. So once read it appears you would need a total of 55 Gigs just to run the program. Memory suggested is at least 1 Gig. Is this a new computer with Vista installed? They sure didn't leave much in the way of a hard drive to work with. Have you gone onto the Vista site and downloaded the program they have to check your system specs and determine whether it's a good OS for this computer? Maybe someone else knows something more but that is the best I can do. There are other forums here that deal with Microsoft Vista and you might have better luck posting there. Let us know...Jazz

I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop Win XP Home edition, 80 gb Hard drive, The hard drive shows 71 gb used and 8 gb free, When I do a count of all used space I come up with 8 gb used and 71 free.

I have ran Windows Defender, Avast, McaFee, and Reg Fix programs all to no avail.

I have defragged, removed file compression, ran chkdsk /f, looked in to all temp folders and removed all files, examined all log files I can not find a problem.

Does anybody have a suggestion for me to try next. I am now thinking I may have a corrupt hard drive.

Answer:Hard drive shows full when it is not.

When it comes to hard drive space you need to understand there is "administrative overhead" for each file on the drive. So there is a difference between drive physical size and available freespace. With 71gb on an 80gb HD, you ARE out of freespace.

There is a very nice tool to show you your actual hard drive status, WinDirStat (freeware).

Look at the screenshot using WinDirStat, note it has been customized to show freespace and I disabled the other "maps."

Notice the difference in the Size of C: and Free Space.

To help free-up HD space:You should run Disk Cleanup in the System Tools menu at least every other month, just do not delete compressed files
You should Defrag your HD, your problem is you don't have enough space to do this, it will fail.
Try a 3rd-party Update Cleanup tool (see suggestion below) to remove the backup files for old updates that you know are OK. I suggest keeping just a year's worth.
Look at Add/Remove Programs for entries on JAVA, remove all but the latest (see comment below)

Update Cleanup tool: Update Cleanup (shareware)
This will remove the backup files use to Remove updates and the Add/Remove Programs entries WITHOUT touching the update logs so Win Update will still see them as installed. Once updates have been on your system for a a long time without any problems, you are not going to be removing them. So you don't need the backup files hogging HD space.

JAVA: If you have JAVA installes, you may note that ... Read more
