Preferred Solution: pc making "grinding" sound

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: pc making "grinding" sound

Yes or something hitting. Best way to find out is to take the cover off and look and listen. (If there aren't any warranty issues).

Recently, two nights ago, my pc began making some rather annoying grinding noises. The sounds vary in pitch and volume, sometimes stopping completely and later, starting again. At first I assumed it was one of the fans, so I made sure there were no wires caught on anything, while I was in the case I did a good vacuum job as well. Needless to say this didn't help, and I'm not really sure what the problem might be.

The sound appears to come from the power supply, but at times it seems the noise starts when I load a new web page, or enter new areas in a game, which makes me wonder if it could be the hard drive. I've also had a few "hangs" in process time, as well as some graphical issues since the noise began (things like ghosted FX not going away when they should and "sticking" on the screen)

Its a god awful whiny grind that I simply cannot "grin and bear" and definitely needs attention asap. I'm just not sure what to troubleshoot next to determine which component it might be. Would like to try as much as I can on my own before I run off buying misc components that "might" be broken.

Answer:PC making "grinding" noises

Id suggest using the harddrive manufacturers testing tool from their website as it could be a sign of imminent drive failure.
This link provides sound files of the most common failures.

I have a Soundblaster Live 24-bit sound card and just recently it is beginning to make a thumping sound, even when nothing is playing.  it comes in 5 second intervals, and I've tried restarting my computer, unplugging speakers and re-plugging them in, putting in headphones (still made sound), turning off subwoofer, downloading the drivers from the website, and installing from the disc.  Could my sound-card just need to be replaced?  It looks easy enough to replace, is this a possible fix?  I forgot to mention I have Windows XP, and a Dell Dimension (if that matters)

Answer:Sound Card making "thumping" sound, fuzzy music

When does the 'thumping' sound occur? Are you sure it is not some application that wants your attention? Or Windows sound configuration interfering with what you do?

Hello,
My computer has started to make the "download complete" sound at odd times. It will start to go off like an alarm clock for several seconds, stop, then start again and so on. It will not do it all day, but quite often.
I have run all the anti-spyware I can find and no help. Also, when I turn my comp. on from a total shutdown, it will start to load window, then go to a black screen, and do nothing more till I hold the button in and restart it again. Then it brings up the " how do you want windows to start" page ( safe mode, regular ect.). After that, it runs fine, but I always have to start it twice. All this just started a few months ago, before that, it ran just fine for years.
I hope someone can help me .
Thanks, Tlingit Carver

I think it's coming from my monitoring, though I am not sure what else other than my monitor could be making that sound.

My CRT Monitor is making a not too loud(I can hear it from 7-9 feet away) quiet "thuuh" kind of sound occasionally, I think I can hear it happening once every one-two days.

It happens even when the computer/monitor is not turned on.

Anyone know what else the sound could be coming from and if it's the monitoring, what could it mean?

My computer is very old and I realize that may be part of my problem. However, my computer is always grinding away (even when I am not using it). I have seen in a lot of different posts where people have been advised to run that Hijack log, and then copy and paste it here and someone will take a look at it. I am not familiar with the Hijack program and have never used it but was wondering if someone could advise me how to do this and take a look at the file. I probably have a ton of stuff that could be removed, but I am too paranoid to do it without advice. I have previously disabled a bunch of my Startup programs and have also not allowed Automatic Updates on some programs, they must notify me that a download is ready first.

If someone could help me with my old dinosaur of a computer I would really appreciate it!

Thanks!

Here's how the problem started..
My 17" crt display went kaput, and the monitor started emitting smoke. I closed the power immediately and that was it.
Forward 2 days later...
called in LG service and the guy fixed my monitor! bingo.
But now when I start my computer, it makes a REAL LOUD noise and everything vibrates wildly. the noise and the vibration 'stay' for 2-3 minutes before stopping.
Now I have searched a bit and come across several probable causes - and eliminated quite a few , like hard-disk, dvd-drive , wires touching fan..

What I really want to know is that could there be any relation between my monitor going dead an smoking, and the cpu vibration?

The system is functioning just fine right now and a soft reboot does not cause any sound or vibration. Also the problem does not happen everytime..

Hmm, the only moving parts on a computer are the fans and the hard disk itself. This might sound crazy but have tried to to remove the side panels and listen/see what is vibrating?

Hey folks,

My first post on here but I'm in serious trouble. I got a "new" (to me anyway) desktop running XP today and found the audio hardware wasn't working. So I pillaged an old machine for its sound card, and inserted that onto the motherboard. Also connected the Aux and CD lines to the top of the daughterboard.

Since then, to my horror, the machine has failed to boot. All plugged in, keyboard working, screen on and being used on another box for this very post. All I get now is the usual chirps from the internal soundcard followed by a few very low notes, definitely depressing so I guess they're suggesting something's failed. There's no further action from the CPU, the fan still works, but there is no screen output whatever.

Have I fried the motherboard without realising?!

Also, ironically, the last failure tone was delivered by my speakers through the originally non-responsive audio hardware!

I'd love a bit of help on this one, because my knowledge of computers' insidey bits is pretty poor.

Many thanks,

Joe.

To whom it may concern,
I would like to set my default to my Bluetooth headset for meetings.  FYI-I currently have a microphone issue and it doesn't work.   I am thinking if I can default to my Bluetooth, then I can by pass the laptop's microphone issue and still have meetings via webex or Google hangouts for example.
I am able to "connect" the computer and LG HBS760 successful.
However, can't seem to tell the computer to recognize the blue tooth as it sends the sound the computer fine (not the Bluetooth), however, the audience cannot hear me talk back because of the microphone issue.  Hence... trying to swap the default sound to the Bluetooth.
My Troubleshooting steps...
1) I went to control panel, then "Sound", then "Playback" ... and nothing was listed.  According to the LG Bluetooth help... it said I should see several things displayed, included a "Bluetooth Headset" option... then I should be able to click it as the "default device".
Please advise me :)

Answer:my Dell Latitude EE6530 - I would like to set my "Sound" "default" to my Bluetooth headset for meetings

DaveSteph11 I went to control panel, then "Sound", then "Playback" ... and nothing was listed.  According to the LG Bluetooth help... it said I should see several things displayed, included a "Bluetooth Headset" option... then I should be able to click it as the "default device".
Hello. Even though a headset seems like a single device, to Windows it is 2 separate devices: a playback device (headphones), and a recording device (microphone). So for the mic to become active, you have to go to the Recording tab and make the Bluetooth device the default.
DaveSteph11I am able to "connect" the computer and LG HBS760 successful.
But if you do not see your Bluetooth microphone in the list of recording devices, then the headset still is not paired or connected correctly. That is a radio issue outside my area which is audio, so someone else will have to help with that.
When you reply back you should say which variety of Windows is on the laptop. Dell supplies Bluetooth drivers for every Windows from XP through 8 on the Latitude E6530, so if 8.1 or 10 is your operating system it could be the cause of some issues.

This is the first laptop I've owned, and of course it's a used one. Anyway today while using it, it just froze up on me, and then it would not respond to anything, even cntrl, alt, del. So I had to unplug the battery to get it to turn off. Then when I tried to turn it back on, the HD started to make a sound like if the needle in the HD was actually grinding into the disk. It sounded painfull!. Then it would attempt to post, and then gives me a "disk error". I am going to take a wild guess and say that my hard drive crashed in the truest sense? LOL ... Since my first inclination was to immediately try to find a replacement, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to how to go about selecting a suitable replacement. It is a IBM thinkpad 600 series. I was thinking maybe I should remove the old one and get a part number first? What would you do? Thanks for the input.:blackeye:

Answer:My thinkpad HD is making an awful grinding sound!

Sounds like a head crash. This is when the head and the platters actually make contact. It can make a screaching or grinding sound. Only thing I can suggest about a replacement is to make sure it is the right size drive. Most of the time laptop HDDs are listed separately from the rest so it shouldn't be a problem finding one. If you wish to get an exact replacement then yes, you'd probably want the numbers off of it.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

That dxdiag "no sound card" message is misleading as I've found it says that if no driver OR sound card. I think you're missing the right driver

Also, it would seem from your post you have High Definition (HD) audio. Which means you'll need to find the right High Definition audio driver. (AC97 pre-dates HD audio so the Realtek AC97 couldn't be right)

Try starting on the HP support website HERE and enter your model number or they have a button where they'll try to identify your product and drivers for your model. They should list an HD audio driver there

(Running Windows 7 Professional x64 SP1)
I'm a professional photographer and have recently begun shooting with two cameras simultaneously at events. They use different file names to avoid duplicate names/confusion, i.e. IMG_175000 and XMG_175000. Often times I'll take a photo with one camera and then take a photo immediately after it with the other camera and I'd like both of these images to be organized in the same subfolder and shown sequentially, but by default Windows Explorer lists all the "XMG_######" photos at the end and the IMG_###### photos at the beginning. I can manually sort each individual folder by going to "Sort by - Date" or even better, selecting "Sort by - More... and putting a check mark next to "Date Taken" so that it shows up in the Sort options (which it doesn't automatically) and then sorting by Date Taken, but since I'm dealing with hundreds of subfolders with hundreds of thousands of photo and video files I'd like a way to do this for all the files in these subfolders that isn't manual.

Is there a way to make Windows Explorer automatically arrange every file (both image and movie files) inside the various subfolders inside one root folder by Date or Date Taken instead of automatically always sorting them by name?

Thanks in advance!

For a couple weeks now, My laptop has been making a "pop" sound everytime on start up after the windows logo comes together it makes a faint pop sound then continues to the login screen. Everytime I muted or unmuted the speakers it would make the sound too. I changed my driver the the Windows default and it stopped but the pop won't.

Laptop Model / Manufacturer : Gateway NV53A
Sound Driver : Realtek (But changed to Windows Default)

Answer:Laptop speakers emit a "pop" sound after "Starting Windows"

The windows default is the culprit here.

When your system boots, drivers started one after another, the pop sound came in because the default driver is not built to especially manage your audio card.

Download the driver from the manufacturer according to your model, install it and I assure you all will be fine.

Hiya, I could use a little help resolving what should be a simple problem. It's really a long story, but to skip to the important part, I'll just recount this little tale:

I wanted to delete some files off of an old external hard drive to make space for some new stuff. It didn't matter, since the files I was deleting had been long since copied to a new drive. However, Vista, in its infinite wisdom, told me I couldn't delete the files, and it was for my own good. I politely said, "okay, Vista! Thanks for keeping me honest!"

But then I muttered, "I already have a mother" under my breath, and proceeded to go behind Vista's back and turn off User Account Control so I could delete the files anyway. Well, I knew that wasn't the best idea, so I immediately turned UAC back on afterwards, but it was too late. Vista caught me, and after the second restart, smote me with a problem I'd seen once before: nearly every program on my computer was said to have been closed after it "encountered a problem" or some nonsense, and when restarted again, the disk checker was run, found numerous problems, and did whatever it had to do to go about fixing them all.

Now I'm not sure what all that was about, because everything seems to be running okay now, save for one minor thing. That little "click" sound you get when navigating windows explorer was nowhere to be heard. I tried another restart and another disk check, b... Read more

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

I just received a new laptop (Dell Latitude 6500) and it's got a 1900x1200 resolution display... I've been experimenting with increasing font sizes and have been successful in many ways...

What I'm still having some trouble with is standard windows fonts... by this, I mean - the font size used in Outlook Address Book, Outlook To/Subject/etc fields of a message, the 'Run' window, etc...

Is there anyway to adjust these sizes?

Also some of my mpg files get an error message saying "the file extension does not match the file format" , but this is strange because these files worked fine while i was using win media player 7.1 yesterday before the upgrade today.

This has never happened before.

In the past I would do a Reset and the search results were fine but this time I did an install.

Search examples:

Plz let me know if you have any ideas on how to fix this and/or where I can find the executables.

without a complete reinstall:

Quote from Fred Langa:
"Moving The Operating System To The New Drive
There are several ways to move the operating system to a new drive. But because I'm a fan of drive imaging, my preferred method for setting up the operating system on a new drive is this:

Still running the operating system on the old drive, I enter the Device Manager and uninstall the current entries under "Disk Drives." This in effect makes Windows "forget" what drives it's currently using. I then reboot to my disk imaging tool and create an image of the "no disks configured" version of Windows residing on the old drive. I then restore this image onto what will become the C: partition on the new drive. This whole process is measured in minutes, not hours, and gets a complete clone of the old Windows set up onto the new drive, with all the software and user files intact and ready to pick up from where they left off."

We used to have "stereo mix" option that enabled streaming audio recording without having to have the audio playing through the speakers. How do I do that now? What replaces that capability? Who makes my sound card? Why is that not readily available somewhere in Dell land? I can't believe forum searching found pretty much nothing on this.

Answer:Latitude E6530 Windows 10 no "stereo mix" option for sound input device, only "high definition audio device" with Microsoft driver and unknown manufacturer.

aj_chicagoWho makes my sound card?
Hello. The audio chip manufacturer was IDT.
aj_chicagoWhat replaces that capability?
IDT doesn't have "stereo mix", so I'm not sure how you used to have it on the E6530. IDT has an equivalent capability that it calls Rec.Playback. That can be found in the list of recording devices, after the IDT driver is installed.
aj_chicagoHow do I do that now?
Dell doesn't support audio on an E6530 that has had Win10 installed. The IDT company went out of the consumer audio business long before there was a Win10 OS, so there is no Win10 IDT driver for that model. Your computer is currently using the Windows native audio driver, which, as you say, does not support a stereo mix kind of feature.
You should be able to install the IDT driver for Win7 by installing with compatibility mode.
1. Download and save the audio driver to your desktop or any convenient location on the hard drive.  [There are two "formats" on the driver's page. Scroll down to the 2nd one, named "Hard Drive" format, and download that one, not the 1st one named "Windows Update Package".]2. Double click on the new folder to extract (unzip) the driver files.3. The extractor wizard will create a new folder for the driver files. It will be at "c:\dell\drivers\xxxxxx". Write down the exact location that the wizard creates. 4. If the driver begins to install automatically, halt (cancel) the installation.5. Browse to the dri... Read more

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

Answer:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

I double-click and get "search" instead of "open"--only when I click a disk, like Hard Drive C: or Floppy A: or CD F: and so on.

It didn't used to do this, so I must've inadvertently changed some setting somewhere, but darned if I can find it now.

Any ideas?

afaik hotmail does not provide pop\imap or smtp for free you may get it if you pay for the hotmail service but i would not recommend you do that just so you can get pop\imap or smtp

hrrm tbird and hotmail from the thunderbird faq
Can I access my Netscape WebMail or Hotmail accounts through Thunderbird?

No. Netscape WebMail and Hotmail use proprietary protocols. To access WebMail directly through an e-mail client requires you to use Netscape 6+ with AIM; to do so with Hotmail requires either Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. Of course, you can access your WebMail account on the Web at http://webmail.netscape.com/, or Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com/.

Have you had problems trying to disable your sound when printing on a Dell printer?

I recently installed Windows 7 and have a Dell printer (not sure if this happens with other printers) and every time I go to print it says "Now Printing" and at the end it says "Done Printing". I found this quite aggravating.

I did find a page on this website that had corrections for Vista, but not Windows 7, and the steps are a little different.

After trying to go into CONTROL PANEL and SOUNDS, I found that readjusting these settings did absolutely NOTHING to get rid of these announcements.

After some more of my own trouble-shooting, I figured out how to get rid of these announcements for a DELL printer:

1. Click on the Windows icon on the bottom left of your screen and scroll up to DEVICES AND PRINTERS and click on it.
2. Left click on your selected printer (will have green check mark) and scroll to PRINTING PREFERENCES and click on it.
3. A box will pop up. In the upper right hand corner, click on OPTIONS and scroll down to PRINTER STATUS OPTIONS and click on it.
4. Another box will pop up. Click on the circle to the left of 'Never Display the Printing Status' so that the circle becomes blue. Note: selecting this option will disable your printing announcements, but it will ALSO disable the box that pops up during printing that shows your ink levels and percentage of printing completed. If you want to continue to see this printing status box, you will have ... Read more

Answer:Windows 7: Disabling printer sound "Now Printing" and "Done Printing" for Dell

I only use HP printers and have never used Dell printers, so I'm not familiar with those "now printing/done printing" announcements.

I keep my printer set to notify me of the ink levels ONLY when something is printing.

That saves me from having to go into the printer toolbox to manually check the ink levels.

How can I make the file explorer always use "list" view when opening files and folders?

Thanks

Answer:Making "list" default view for file explorer

I prefer details layout....

Open up your file explorer....for this example we'll use the "Documents" folder. Open up your documents folder, click the view tab at the top, under the layout area, move your mouse around for the layout you like...for me it's details but for you click "list" and that should do it.

I have Window 7 Home Premium Installed on My HP Pavilion Dv6 i5 Notebook. I have only 1 Partition. I want to Install

another Window and thats why i want to Make Another Partition for it (I Know About Shrinking of Drive but i won't do it

because it make the shrinked Partition Dynamic, Which Can not Have OS on it)

SO i want to know that how can i make another Partition Without losing this Win7. Because Once i had Done that ( Shrinked)

and install another OS on (Shrinked) and then My Win7 had stopped working and was getting stuck during (ScreenFlash) Please

Tell me how can i have an Extra Partition.

**I have an idea, Correct me if i am Wrong;

The idea is that if i Make "System Backup" of (C: 45GBUsed : Free400GB) {Control Panel >Back up and Restore >Create a system

Backup} on External Drive. And Format Laptop and Make Fresh 50GB New Partition using (Any bootable CD).

So Can i Restore that "BACKUP" on Newly created 50Gb Partition. i think if i could and if it works then this is my

Solution. I haven't Tried and i want to know first. Please Reply Must.

Answer:Windows 7 Home Premium {Making New Partition "Not Shrink one"}

I think you do not understand the concept of dynamic partitions. They do not get created because of shrinking but if you have already 4 primary partitions. You will need to get the space from somewhere.

Suggest you post a full picture of your Disk Management so that we can best advise you.

When you drag icons around in explorer they have different default actions what will happen if you drag them to another location, i.e if you drag an object onto a folder within the current directory it will move the file there however if you drag the file to a folder not within the current directory it will make a copy.

At the moment I drag with the right mouse button so I can choose every time but I wonder if there is a setting to make "move" the default action no matter where you drag the file?

Thank you.

Hi Guys n Girls,

As from the thread title, I'm not sure where I should post this one ATM. I'm suspecting a virus, but the symptoms may well be 'hardware" as well.

Basically, my system will, occasionally, take a few attempts to boot. What happens here is, it starts to boot, then just turns off midway. Some days no problems other days..grrrr! Other days it will boot up fine but then for no apparent reason, it will close all apps and turn off. Just as if you had held the power button in for a few seconds. Could run all day...may only last minutes before shutdown. Boot it again and it may run for ??????
For the most part it runs OK so I'm hoping it's a power supply issue.

Have run the usually AVG and malware programs, nothing really drastic shows up.

So what's your thoughts? VIRUS or not???

Kind Regards
Dave

Answer:Does this sound "Viral" or "hardware" to you?

Hi Guys n Girls,
Had a day off work today so got to have a bit of a play and monitor the PC all day without others rebooting and stuff. Shut itself down and tried to reboot itself on a couple of separate occasions. Came up with a reboot error suggest the PC may be overclocked etc. Sorry didn't write down, thought I'd do that next time. Typically it hasn't done it since.

All programs and apps appear to be working as they are supposed to, it just powers down whenever it feels like it.

Now I'm thinking it's a virus in there somewhere. HJT file here............

Regards Dave

Hello guys, the last week I've been strugling with these nasty BSODs. At first I thought it was my HDDs as ntoskrn.exe somewhat hinted towards that from googling it. My HDDs have been causing a lot of trouble earlier as well due to their somewhat long years of service. However, I've recently reformated my computer and installed W7 on a brand new Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD hoping the BSODs would go away, they didn't.

I googled BSOD and I stumbled upon this forum and I thought I'd give it a try. I'm somewhat desperate, as I need my computer working for both work, school and amusement.

I've been trying to run Memtest in order to test my memory but without any results. I'm also currently running on only on 4GB chip instead of two, to see if the problem still exists. Also, without any results.

This is the second time I'm writing this thread btw, I was just about to post it and my PC crashed.

Here is my two logs + dxdiag (last crash didn't generate a log oddly enough).

Here is additional hardware/gear that I use:

Razer Megalodon 7.1 Headset
Razer Naga
Logitech G19
Logitech C920 (Webcam)
Corsair 750W PSU

My temperatures are also good. Both CPU and MB idles at around ~25. GPU's all good too. I'm also using a Corsair 650D chassi with dustfilters at both air-income so dust is minimal. On top off this, I use airpressure to clean away dust somewhat regularly and I also did exactly this 2 days ago when I reinstalled the pc.

Hi everyone!

Yesterday my HP laptop (Windows 7) started getting BSOD with various types of errors (mostly "STOP: 0x00000F4", "STOP: 0x0000007A", "c00021a" and one "missing %hs, c0000135"). Most of the time it restarts without any issues and works fine right after the BSOD and then an hour or two later I get a BSOD again.

I have tried restoring to Last Known Good Configuration, startup repair, hard disk check, virus scans and I also uninstalled any recently added programs I could think of and cleared up more than 50% of my hard disk space. None of these seem to have helped and I still get BSOD regularly.

I have attached the folder from the SF Diagnostic Tool and would appreciate any advice!
Thank you!

Ok so I'm using a custom visual style made by another user however I don't really like the buttons used that I mentioned above. The creator states it is acceptable to change the theme to however you like as long as you don't redistribute it anywhere.

Ok so I opened up the .msstyles file (using Restorator) located in the theme folder of this VS. I went into the images directory and located what seems to be the images used for the buttons. Intuitively, it seems like it would make sense to replace those images with different ones (perhaps from another visual style) and it should change them. However, would this actually work? Could the theme get messed up in some other way (like proportions or something if the new button images are smaller)? I don't know of any other way to change them that would be easy.

But I did run into another problem. For some visual styles I can't even locate those buttons in the images directory. Where else would they be?

Answer:Changing the "minimize" "maximize" and "close" buttons of a theme

Hi all,

So I'm kind of stuck.. I currently have the problem where I am in an endless cycle of "loading files" -> "Windows Boot Manager" (see: How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way)).
I have tried to load all of the options -- and none successfully load.
I also end up at a OneKey Recovery as well.. unfortunately, the laptop does not have initial backup or user backup images.
I have a Windows 8 CD for repairing purposes.. however, I cannot load the BIOS/UEFI to change the boot order to load the optical drives first. I have also tried to remove the CMOS battery to fix it.. did not work. .
Also - Windows Boot Manager:
Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] -- does not load properly (leads to OneKey Recovery) Safe Mode (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Networking (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Command Prompt (doesn't load - tries to boot and load all files onto partition that is too small.. can't change partition?)
Enable Boot Logging Enable Low-Resolution Video Debugging MOde Disable automatic restart on system failure Disable Driver Signature Enforcement Display Early Launch Anti-Malware Driver
Start Windows Normally
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hey there...I found a folder that I've never seen in my D partition before...I partition my hdd into 3 parts...C=OS installation...D=Programs and Games...E=Misc downloads and music and pr0n ...

Well I've never had a virus or anything in my D partition before...I just found this folder named "winnt" and it had some bat files and some kind of Airline JScript and something that looks like an airplane tracker...

Then in a folder named sdata (still in the winnt folder) there's files like 911, police, air, fire, etc...OMFG!!! This is like some terrorist thing or something...FBI is gonna find me and I'll never see the light of day again!!! I'll miss the [H] and I haven't even watched LOTR Extended Platinum Collectors DVD thing (the big ass package with those book holder things)...I haven't even completed Doom 3 or started playing HL2 or even had a chance to buy an X-Box and play Halo 2!!!

AHHHHHH!!!!!! WTF is this crap on my computer??? I'm gonna delete this...I should delete it right??? Scans say it isn't a virus but what do they know...I'm screwed...

Windows 7 Home Premium

I would provide a screenshot (or three) however that is at the crux of my problem - I should perhaps say my current problem...now, with "7" (I am beginning to tire RAPIDLY of 7, much more quickly than I did with either XP, or Vista).

PROBLEM: When I attempt to "Save As" a document (Notepad, for instance), or even a Paint image, I get a window/page/screen/whatever, that has no "Buttons" ... no button to "Save", no button to "Cancel". Simply NO BUTTONS???

I had this problem the other night, and we "faked" or cheated our way through it, by using the Enter (Return?) Key to advance the cursor (cursor??) to where we wanted to be (well, we "hoped" we were "there", anyway, since we could not "see" what button or drop-down dialog box was selected or highlighted).

It's almost as if I had a "Resolution" problem, whereby the resolution is set too low (say, 800 x 600), things are too big to be seen/won't FIT on the page. However, my resolution is set to the "Recommended" 1366 x 768.

Please help...this Netbook would be a WHOLE LOT easier to throw against a wall than my desktops ever were . . .

Thanks in advance,
glenn . . .
PS, Hoping I was/am clear here...under the drop-down boxes of "File Name" and "Save as Type", there is nothing to select - not "Save" or "OK" or "Cancel" ... NOTHING????... Read more

Hi,

Type dpi into the Search box and choose "Make text smaller or larger" at the top of the search result list. In the window that opens see what it is set to. You want it at 100% rather than 125% or 150%. So if higher than 100% change it back to 100%. Hit Apply. You will need to reboot. See if that helps.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.
After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. I am using Windows 7 on my laptop and I have question about when to use "Home", "Work" and "Public" profile.

If I am logging in without setting password, and I am logging in network with "Public" profile, then will any other user, who can see my computer, be able to enter my computer and check the contents on my computer ?

I am connecting to a network and there are 6 other users connected to this network. In the set network location window, if I select the netwoek as "Home", does it mean that other 6 users will not be able to see my computer on network and if I use "Public", then all other six users will be able to see my computer on network ?

Whenever my cursor is accidentally drug into the corner, the screen suddenly goes blank, then returns to the user log-in screen. It drives me nuts!!! As I remember, this never use to happen. I would like to, somehow, turn this function off, as it is very annoying. I am running Windows 7 Premium Home Edition, 64-bit, on an Acer Aspire laptop.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Hello everyone,

I'm having an issue with my desktop computer (HP Pavilion p6310y) that I'm hoping you can help me with.

To give you a brief background, I bought this computer last February. About a month after purchasing it, I had a third-party graphics card installed by a local technician.

The computer ran fine up until last month (January 2011). At that time, I got the "blue screen of death." I took it to the technician who previously installed the video card. He initially diagnosed the problem as a RAM issue, and then changed his assessment to it being a hard drive problem. But even after he bought and installed a new hard drive, the problem was not resolved.

At this point, I sent the computer to HP for repair (it was still under warranty). They replaced both the motherboard and hard drive (the tech swapped the original hard drive back in prior to me sending it to HP), and sent the computer back to me. However, the paperwork that they sent back indicated that the third-party video card was the source of my problems and they advised removing it.

Because I do not have the necessary expertise to remove the video card, I took it back to the local technician. He indicated to me that the video card was NOT the problem and he said that the computer was running just fine with it installed. At this time, he added the new hard drive (the one that he had me buy prior to the unit being shipped to HP) to the computer, so I now have two 1TB hard drive... Read more

Answer:Computer is making a "revving" noise (fan issue?)

I used to 'lubricate' my fan and voila, it runs quieter until I can hear my HDD crunching clearly. but I don't suggest it, since it doesn't always brought success.

However I'm pretty confident what you need is a new set of fan. The problem would be identifying which fan causes the noise. Either CPU fan, chassis fan or even the power supply fan.

If I were you I would open my case side door and see what's inside, maybe snap a picture. and then first try to disconnect the chassis fan, since it's the easiest and cheapest to replace. Don't forget to disconnect all power supplies before opening the side door.

Hey all,

I'm helping a friend out who was infected with the blaster virus. Now, this person has had trouble in the past with this PC because it's a computer used by many people as they are elderly and have a lot of helpers (me being one of them!). Anyhow, they had gotten virus that when google'd came up as "the blaster virus" according to the symptoms. Symantec was looping along with a popup that said the computer was infected. Symantec was able to show me the directory location (C:/ProgramData/2879323/2879323.exe) of the file trying to alter it, so I went there (C:/ProgramData/2879323/) and changed the name of the application to BAD.jpg, and the name of the folder to BAD. I then rebooted the computer, and it worked again. We (I am one of two helpers) then ran Windows Malicious Software Detection Tool, Full Scan. I do not know the results except that there were a couple things detected. Once it was done, we ran a HJT log. Here is the log. Our intention is to get this computer back to tip top, and then spike the security settings as high as possible so that this happening again is less likely. Everyone else has been instructed to stay off the net as much as possible.

Thank you for the help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I got a Sony VAIO laptop, and every once and a while, it will make a quick "clicking" noise. Its not very loud, but its just loud enough to notice it if the room is quiet. However, everything appears to be running fine on it. What could the clicking noise be? Is it something to worry about? Thanks for any replies.

Answer:Laptop making quiet "clicking" noise

That would be your harddrive. It may be a warning sign for you to do a backup frequently.

Try HD Tune it's a software that monitor the health of your HD

I had a custom built Windows 7 Pro 64 bit PC built about 4 years or so ago by AVA computers. It's been a great machine.......however......in the past several months I have been having "not responding" problems. For example: I will be using Adobe Lightroom and after working for anywhere from 2 minutes to 2 hours without any problems the PC will freeze. At the top left of the Lightroom program (on the bar that runs across the top of the program) the words "not responding" will appear. Then nothing on the PC works. It just freezes. I can't click on anything. Nothing happens if I try to launch another program, if I hit control alt delete nothing happens. The cursor will still move around but clicking on anything gets nothing in return. After a minute or 2 or 3 if I click back on the screen in Lightroom it turns a see-through white color. From experience that tells me that it will be unfreezing in a few seconds or up to a minute or more. Then everything comes back to normal until the next "not responding" situation hits. Could be 20 minutes. Could be 3 hours. Could be 3 minutes. It's completely random when these things hit. It happens every single day several times a day. (incidentally....remember when I said I clicked on programs and hit control alt delete and nothing happened?.....well.....when the PC comes back to life all those things I clicked on a few minutes back now engage and "come on" all at the same time......it's like if one of t... Depending on whether you have backed up your previous material, then perhaps try a restore point to see if that works.
You say that you have done a number of scans and checks, which I assume includes cleaning out cache etc in the browsers. If so, then a reformat might be in the thinking, but this will need all your previous items (drivers etc) handy for re-install.

I tested google drive for sending email attachments in my gmail. And the way I did that was to send some picture attachments to my own email address. Everything seemed good. But then when I hovered my mouse cursor over the thumbnail picture, it gave me two choices for viewing it. One was a box with a pointing down arrow that let me view it in windows photo viewer. And the other was a box with a yellow green & blue triangle that would let me view it in google drive. Picking that option not only let me view that picture, but all of the other files that are stored there!!

Searched in settings, but there was nothing that I could see to make it private so that only attached files could be viewed. Is there a "setting" available to make it private?

Well McAfee didn't detect anything but I knew something was up... TODAY I followed a web link that was suppose to link another site but I landed on a weird page that looked like a directory and my firewall asked if AcroRd32 could access the internet, I thought sure why not, then things went weird. All of a sudden out of nowhere "~.exe" wanted access which I denied and blocked and deleted and then "guvodudi.exe" came out of nowhere and wanted access too which got denied, guvodudi.exe was mysteriously set as hidden in my WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/ and Google did not list anything.

My computer started crunching like crazy and my cpu was at 100% non stop, pop ups from firefox started appearing with ads and crap... Boy oh boy... Found this site, did the READ ME and the crunching stopped, I checked again with SAS and still said infected with less stuff but apparently it doesn't go away, same with Malwarebytes...

McAfee is so lame... I feel ashamed to have depended on it... It still doesn't detect anything, I'm so glad you guys exist!!

Answer:PC was making crunching sounds! Did the "read me", still infected...

Okay so this is not a bump...

I redid SAS which spotted leftover problems, rebooted again and long and behold after another SAS run, no reported problems! Did malwarebyte's and no problems!

This was a vundo type malware and a rogue.component

Does this mean I'm in the clear? I will do the un-restore & restore bit and will await for further instructions.

That sounds like a good possibility of what might have removed those options. I would just re-install the manufacturer's latest driver and check the settings again.

Hello,

I am having speed/space issues with my Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop. I'm running Windows XP. The last week or so it has been taking an inordinate amount of time to bring up new windows, change tabs in Firefox, etc., even bringing up the Start Menu takes time and makes a lot of noise. I've also noticed that there is very little space left on my hard drive. I have continued to move photos to a USB key and delete old files, but the space keeps filling up, and I don't know what's causing it. I also had one incident this week where I typed a web address into Firefox (I don't remember exactly which site--something very regular like Facebook or Gmail) and it brought up a completely different site with questionable content (no, it was not a pop-up, and the page I wanted didn't load in a new tab or anything). I am putting a HijackThis log below.

seriously.. does that really help? i saw several videos on youtube about that...
some dudes changed some configuration settings in firefox to make the browser faster
YouTube - How to Make Firefox 15x Faster
i tried id and i see no difference....
what do you pros say ?

Answer:"making your internet faster"-tutorials

It can help, under some circumstances, but it's also liable to make some sites not render properly or suffer other issues, and it may not always be easy to spot the differences.

Pipelining in this context means launching multiple HTTP requests in parallel rather than waiting for each request to complete before the next one starts (serialised requesting). From memory, the HTTP 1.0 standard provides support for up to 4 concurrent requests, while HTTP 1.1 drops that down to 2. Irrespective, there are plenty of servers which limit themselves to servicing only 1 single request at a time per client. All additional concurrent requests will be ignored, and the results will vary depending on the page design and the browser you're using. Whatever it is, it won't be pretty.

There's no harm in trying it, as long as you remember to put it back if your favourite sites are suddenly not working properly.

Tweaking these settings does nothing whatsoever to speed up the "single large file" transfer scenario.

Hey, I would like to make a watch folder for itunes.

What I mean by that is similar to the "Watch Folder" ability in Windows Media Player. That is it has a folder (for example, "My Music") which it will constantly scan (or check every once in a while) for new music, that will be added automatically into your Music Library.

On my itunes, I always have to manually goto "add folder" and re-add my music folder so that it can find the new music to put into the library.

Is there a way in Itunes so that it always looks for new music?

Thank you

Answer:Making a "Watch Folder" in Itunes??

No.

I just drag and drop, when I rip a new album or whaatever, I just drag and drop into iTunes and then "Consolidate Library", delete ripped files (since iTuens copied them into it's directory, and then "Update Genius". Yea, it's more steps than it should be.

I was recently attacked by viruses that were on my flash drive, and they totally destroyed all of my drive's files. First, I tried deleting the files. A failure. second, I scanned for errors, and then deleted some viruses, but not all. Then, I formatted my drive. It worked the first time, but then, it suddenly had to be formatted again right in the proccess of installing open office and libre office portable from portableapps.com. So, I scanned the web for anti-virus methods to prevent viruses from getting on a personal flash drive. I read one, and it said that all you have to do is make a folder named "autorun.inf", which is the auto-reproducing virus's name. Is this true?

Answer:Making a folder named "autorun.inf"

This is an old trick and worked well in the day but viruses are alot more sophisticated then they were many years ago.

I would definitely turn off autorun and make any folder on your stick read-only
go to a command prompt and change to your usb stick then use attrib to lock down folders

Say you have a folder called images

attrib +R +S +H E:\images

Assuming E: is your USB stick.

This makes backing up annoying as you have to change the attributes back to do a backup, but it helps.

This is not a perfect solution

Better solution is to never use your USB sticks on a machine that you know is not safe and clean

I've worked out how to use attribute and cmd to make the .modd files "not" hidden, but if new ones are added to the folder they are hidden. What do I do to ensure any new .modd files are not hidden ones.
If you are wondering, it's to enable Seagate Backup plus to "see" them and back them up - as it doesn't backup hidden files.

Hi all,

I'm looking for a way to make the "My Network Places" on the start menu open as a menu rather than a link. On my home network, my girlfriend and I share share quite a few folders for various tasks, and I'd much prefer to have it open as a menu so I can select the folder; I don't like the way it opens a new explorer window containing the folders.

Anyway, you can't customize it that way in the Start menu properties, and there is no mention of it in TweakUI. Does anybody know of any "hack" or perhaps registry edit/something to make this a menu rather than a link?

Thanks!

Answer:Making "My Network Places" a menu

I run mine in classic start menu style and this is how I did it:

Right click start button and select properties
Select classic start menu (Under start menu tab) and click customize
Under "Advanced start menu options", click "Expand network connections"
Click ok, ok again and that should do it.

Hope that's what you are looking for.

What I mean is I need to set up a movie to show a homepage, show the cursor navigating around it and activating things, then going to a subpage, then moving on to the next website in the presentation. I know next to nothing about making .mov's let alone capturing onscreen motion and turning THAT into a movie file, so I don't even know where to begin! =P Is there a utility that can just take what's on screen and turn it into a mov file? Then maybe I can splie the separate files together into a presentation?

Hi!

Long story short: the Favorites folder in Vista (used by IE) has an integrity level of low when moved to a different hard drive. You can fix it by going to the command prompt and typing this:

icacls E:\Ibrahim\Favorites /setintegritylevel (OI)(CI)high

However, I seem to "lose" this level after a restart, where then it is reset to low. So, I typed that into Notepad and saved as *.bat file. However, is there a way to make it hidden, so that I don't get the black command prompt flickering for a few seconds on startup?

Thanks!

I installed Seven on a partitioned 320gb Hard drive on my Dell Laptop. Unfortunately being a novice I didn't nominate the partition as my "Primary" drive. I now have decided to get rid of XP home on the other partition and go for the "virtual" option. Seven has proven to be very stable and I really see no need to use XP any more except for the odd program that doesn't work with 7.
How do I change my & "C" drive to the primary drive and format the "D" drive to just run "XP Virtual" and store files?
I have ASEUS, but it won't let me format the drive, just change it's size.
Thanks,
Col

Answer:Making the partition Seven is installed on "Primary"

First off welcome to the sevenforums!

The new XP mode isn't run from a second or any other partition but seen on the 7 primary itself. You first install the new Virtual PC beta along with the XP mode itself on 7.

Any version of Windows is installed onto a primary to start with. If you installed 7 on the first you can simply use the second for a storage partition there.

The reason the drive can't be reformatted is likely due to the method you are using for that. On hard drives were Windows has been preinstalled by a company there is also a hidden recovery partition not seen in Windows but viewable in a separate drive partitioning tool usually about 10gb in size.

Hi All,

This is my first posting so please be gentle...

OS is Win XP SP1. After I rebooted and logged into XP I got at least a dozen "Run DLL as an App" errors and some Devldr32 errors - basically everything that runs on startup throws one or other of these errors.
If I then try and start almost anything I get one of those errors - usually "Run DLL as an App...". Examples of apps that throw this - Add/Remove Programs, Regedit, Command Prompt - anything I might want to use to troubleshoot the problem as well as any apps like MS Word etc.
The only way I can do anything is to restart in safe mode WITH command prompt (normal safe mode reports the Run DLL errors if I start anything).
I've replaced devldr32.exe from driver.cab of XP CD without any change in the problem. RUNDLL32.EXE looks ok and is the same bytesize as on another XP installation I have (date is 03/31/03).

So, I have a completely messed up XP environment that will not run any app (except windows explorer and IE) without throwing the Run DLL error. The only way I can do anything is to restart in safe mode with command prompt which is somewhat limiting.

What was I doing before I rebooted?

1. I installed CyberArmor Firewall from http://www.infoexpress.com

2. This may be more pertinent: I was in the process of upgrading to directx9.0b runtimes when the PC was restarted (not by me before you jump down my throat!) and it looks like this did not complete because if I go to the windows update ... Read more

Ok, so basically, whenever I turn the computer on, 3 error messages appear:

- A virtual driver failed to inicialize DLL. Chose close to end the program. H:/Windows/system32/code/pRee.exe

- A virtual driver failed to inicialize DLL. Chose close to end the program. H:/Windows/system32/code/pRee1.exe

- Error loading H:/Archiv~/GBPLUG~/gbiehcef.dll. Couldn't find specific module.

(sorry if some terms are incorrect, my computer is in Spanish, to I tried to translate as best as possible)

Please help me solve this terrible problem, it is really getting me on my nerves! (oh, and if this helps, I've recently donwloaded this so called "Limewire acceleration", and whenever I ran the setup, it didn't work. I don't really remember the name of the website I downloaded it from, sorry...)

Answer:Can't Open "My Documents", "Trash" or other files in "My Computer"!?

Hi and Welcome to the forum

I am almost certain that you have malware problems. Most like caused by you doing file sharing/ P2P - Limewire.

Suggest that you go here and follow the directions:

Please be advised that the malware people are very busy and it could take a couple days to assist you.

Hi
I have recently updated to the creator version
My files end up in unintended destinations. When I click in the documents tab in the sidebar of the documents screen, it takes me to a ?Documents? folder that appears in ?One Drive? group. Any files that I send from my desktop end up there
Those files are also shown when I open the first ?Documents? folder that appears in the ?Quick Access? group. I have similar problems with ?Pictures? folders
I have attached screen shots that I hope will explain. I want all my files of any description to end up in the ?Documents? folder contained in the ?This PC? group. Can anyone help please?
Incidentally, I don?t understand the purpose of ?One Drive?, and don?t believe that I will have a use for it. Can I remove/disable it?

hi,

OK, this is a weird one.

I wanted to move the "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos" folders to another HDD. I moved the "My Documents" Folder to this HDD without a problem but the others I accidentally set the whole HDD as the folder (if that makes sense). So now the music, videos and pictures folders are set to this HDD and dont have an actual folder to change the properties of. Therein lies my dilema.

If anyone can offer any advice on this curly issue it would be greatly appreciated.

Shane

Hi:

Looking for insight/advice re: KB3054476.

According to Infoworld, it was "Optional" in May, but I was not offered it then.
This week, it was offered as "Important" and "Recommended" (!), but only for one of my 2 Win7/64 boxes.

I have read the MS KB article, as well as THIS FORUM THREAD, the latter of which includes a report of a BSOD due to this particular update.

However, there isn't much out on the web about it.
And most of the discussion about it is overly technical for me.
And I am confused as to why it was previously offered as "Optional", but now is "Important" or "Recommended".

I don't *think* I "need" it (as I have no webcam on this box). And I don't like to tempt fate by fixing things that are not broken.

So, 3 questions:
Is it safe to install?
Is it really necessary/important?
Or would I be OK to hide it?
Thanks very much in advance!

Answer:KB3054476 offered as "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional"

The status of updates changes with circumstances.
If an update isn't relevant, it won't be offered at all.
If however it's relevant but the related software is not apparently in use, it may be 'optional' - and gravitate to 'Recommended' or 'Important' if the related software is in use.
It can also be promoted through the hierarchy by MS depending on feedback through WU and error-trapped feedback.

If you have (and use) a webcam, then it's probably best to install the update.

I thought I was computer savvy until this problem came up. When I double click my computer, recycle bin, control panel, etc, the hourglass comes up for a few seconds, goes off, and nothing else. No error messages or anything, just nothing. I have viewed a few of the threads covering this and a common link was the hijack this result. I have posted that here, and really hope that someone can help me with this. I have run SpyBotSD and adaware, I have run mutiple virus scans, I did an SFC, and the final thing was to repair windows using the original disk, none of which has help. I am running Window XP w/SP2. Any other suggestions would be certainly appreciated. Hope to here from someone soon. MTCS, out.

Answer:I cannot open "my computer" "control panel" "recycle bin", etc...

You may want to reinstall the operating system.

Backupthe files that are importantto you before you reinstall.

The "New" installation will overwrite the current one

If you do not format your hard drive before the reinstall the installation should not harm your files (That's why I suggest backingup your files) and will speed up the installation process.
