Need program for testing hard drive

Question: Need program for testing hard drive

I just just installed a program called Hard Disk Sentinel which had good reviews etc

Hard Disk Sentinel can monitor hard disk status, health and performance including temperature and S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology, built in most hard disks today) values for each hard disks. Also it measures the hard disk transfer speed in real time which can be used as a benchmark or to detect possible hard disk failures, performance degradations.
Hard Disk Sentinel is a windows software that helps to prevent hard disk failure.
Hard Disk Sentinel can be used to prevent serious damage or data loss. It warns the user if there will be a problem occur and this gives opportunity to backup important and valuable data. Click to expand...

and it is saying that my IDE drive (what I use for my OS) is only running at 43% health which is a good reason for problems I have been having.

The thing is, like doctors on serious matters I like to get a second opinion, so can anyone recommend another program that I can use to test my hard drives

Preferred Solution: Need program for testing hard drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Question: hard drive testing

I have three SATA drives installed and am trying to test each drive to see which is the best to have the operating system on (XP Pro). I have tried a few testing utilities, but none of them recognise that I have any drives installed. Even the Western Digital Lifeguard utility doesn't detect any drives and they are all WD drives.

Question: Hard Drive Testing

i am posting this here because it is not specifically windows 7 related and i was not sure what section to put it in. i have a seagate barracuda momentus 120gb hard drive in an amilo pro v2085 laptop that windows setup will not detect.
i am trying to do a fresh install of xp on my sons laptop and xp setup will not detect the hard drive.i created a slipstream copy of xp sp2 with the extra correct drivers for the hdd and this boot disc would detect the hdd.now i can get into bios and repair console etc. which is some progress i guess.
when i get to the part where i have to format the hdd in ntfs it just freezes at 0%, even on the quick format it freezes on 20%.i have tried seatools for dos and although on the long test there are bad sectors it passes after repair.trouble is i cannot get past the start of the format and that only works on the slipstreaned copy of xp.what else can i do to check the hdd to be absolutely sure if is past repair or not?
does the fact that the slipstreamed copy of xp is detecting the hdd mean that it is physically functional and that i just have missing software of some sort?
i tested both ram modules with memtest 86 and they both passed no problems.

Answer:Hard Drive Testing

i have tried seatools and other drive test utilities and they all say there is a problem but none will say what it is.i just need to know if the problem is fixable?

Question: Testing hard drive

Is there anyway to test a hard to see if it has any bad sectors? Here is the situation: I had a hard drive reporting bad sectors after running chkdsk. I then formatted the hard drive. Now it reports zero bad sectors. Is there anyway to find out if there are really zero bad sectors or if the bad sectors are just being ignored? Also, just because chkdsk reports bad sectors, does it really mean one has physically bad sectors or could it just be a software problem? Thanks, Jerry

Answer:Testing hard drive

chkdsk /r at the command prompt, and then reboot.it will scan for, (and attempt recovery of) bad sectors.I have seen bad sectors caused by software. I can't remember the specific instances or how they occured but I do remember being able to format (as you have) and not ahving any bad sector problems after that (and chkdsk /r didn't find any either).

Question: Hard Drive testing

Hi

I have a backup program called Casper, I have been using it for many years and think it is great.

A couple of days ago it reported that it could not do a backup because my Seagate hard drive was faulty.

I have run the drive through all the basic tests on Seatools and it has passed, I have done windows chkdsk
and "error checking" and none reported any errors, but Casper does not do a backup because it sees that my Seagate hard drive is faulty.

Any ideas on how to fix this, is there another HDD test I can run?

Thanks

I recently purchased a removable hard drive. LaCie 500 MB USB Attach

Lately I've been having problems. When I first received the unit (it worked fine) I noticed that when I shut down my PC, the unit (USB attached) would flash every minute or so. Strange (to me) but didn't seem to effect anything, so I just let it pass.

Now it stays lighted all the time and occasionally I get an error message from Win XP that there is an USB device attached that it can't identify. Since I have more that one device attached via USB, I can't be sure it's the drive.

Anyway, so far I haven't experienced any read errors with the drive, but just in case I have copied the drive contents to another drive. 500 MB. Used my new Win7 machine. Took four hours. rolleyes

Is there any way to test the drive to see if it is having problems other than run DskChk?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Answer:Testing Removal Hard Drive

When you remove the drive and reboot do you still get the "USB device it can't identify" message. Let it run a while to be sure.

Do you have the latest desktop manager and drivers?

My laptops been through a world of fun for a long time. About 3 months ago I dropped my laptop and broke the screen. Along with the screen every 20 minutes or so my compter would shut off. I sent it into HP under warranty. They sent it back with a new motherboard and screen. The hard drive is aftermarket so it wasn't warrantied. They wipped the hard drive, but it still resets on me. I ended up sending it back to HP because they gave me a horrible low resolution screen. It took them about 2 months to get clearance to give me my origional screen resolution and take off the junky one.

So here I am back at the beginning. I beleive it reset on me once a few hours ago, but I'm not sure. It hasn't in the last hour or so. I'm looking for some kind of software to push my hard drive to it's limit to recreate the issue. If I need to I'll stick in the new hard drive I bought. If I can't I'll save a $100 and send the new one back. If you know of any software to help me with this please let me know!

I bought myself a OCZ 90GB SSD SATA IIIhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227757to replace my Seagate 500GB SATA 3.0Gb/s drive which is SATA II ( *in which this SATA III drive will be running SATA II 3.0Gb/s vs 6Gb/s until I either upgrade my motherboard with one that has SATA III port(s) or pick up a SATA III drive controller for $40 )and want to compare before and after speed of data read/write at my current SATA II configuration. I have been searching the web for a good speed test utility for data read/write through SATA II and the best match I found so far was this site below. BUT the only utility that works ( sort of ) is Parkdale. Reason why I say it sort of works is because when using it and nothing else running to affect the read/write speed of the hard drive each test gave me different results every time I ran it and with different file sizes to read and write I still could not find a setting that would on multiple testing display somewhat similar results. It seems like the results fluctuated too wildly for me to assume that they were good numbers.I tried to initially go to Windows 7 Device Manager to find this drive controller speed test feature that I never knew existed in 7, and my Windows 7 Home Premium doesn't have such a feature available. Maybe the more expensive/featured editions of Win 7 have this feature and Home Premium is lacking it.http://ttcshelbyville.wordpress.com/2009/12/20/test-your-hard-drive-speed-with-windows-7s-de... Answer:Hard Drive Speed Testing

The numbers may not be wrong. Doing a speed test and a performance test are not always the same thing. Speed can be a single thing, how fast does it transfer data. Or how fast does it find random sectors.Performance test is much more subjective.  It is an estimate of how the driven will perform a rel-world scenario. It can be the average of several tests that do practical operations. In a real-world case the drive will be partially fragmented.

I recently purchased a bare bones system and after setting it up with XP Pro, motherboard and graphics card it started well but has since packed in. I can't even get the monitor to work and the base unit just starts with the fan going but nothing else which leads me to believe that I've messed up the hard drive somehow. My question is, can I take the hard drive from my old computer and put it into the new one, which has different components, to test or will it mess up this hard drive as well?

Answer:Testing hard drive on new computer?

The fact that the monitor doesnt work suggests to me a fault with either the graphics card or the motherboard. Are you able to swap in an alternative card or start with onboard graphics to test.If it were the hard drive I would have thought you would have something on your monitor.Sure others with more knowledge than me will be able to help

Many HDD makes have specific tools to test for errors and those can be found HERE (Seatools for Seagate HDDs, to Western Digital Lifeguard, even Windows has a drive scanner tool for hardware errors), for speed then HDTune is good HERE

Find the HDD make and then you can match the specific tool up to that drive.

Hi everyone!!!!

I decided to buy an IDE/SATA to USB adapter... I found a generic one that looks a lot like this one:
Amazon.com: SATA/PATA/IDE Drive to USB 2.0 Adapter Converter Cable for 2.5/3.5 Inch Hard Drive / Optical Drive with External AC Power Adapter: Computers & Accessories
It's the first time I buy this so I can test HDD's that may be either faulty or just to recover data from them. I have seen many videos from youtube using this devices and already read the lil' instructions it includes. But as always, I ask for reccomendations to know how to use this safely and properly so I don't burn a HDD or something.

I want to use it by now with a laptop HDD that some friend lent to me (SATA, 5400 RPM 120 GB and I guess is around 600 Ma max current) and an old desktop IDE 4 GB HDD I have (Seagate)...

Any advices? THis device doesn't include a off or on button or something and I'm not sure it will swith from 12v to 5v when connecting a laptop HDD.

Thanks In advance.

See ya!!!

This may be a bit advanced for many people but it has become apparent through some of the questions being asked in here that some WebDesign forum users could benefit from a local web server on their hard drive for site testing. This is especially useful where dynamic sites are being developed using ASP or PHP and/or where database site integration may be required. It becomes inconvenient and irritating to upload your files to your live-hosted web root folder every time you want to test things and this is where a local server environment comes into its own.Windows 2000 and XP Professional include the excellent and easy to configure and use IIS (Internet Information Services) while most earlier versions of Windows have PWS (Personal Web Server) included.Windows Millennium and Windows XP Home have been left completely high and dry though, and users of these operating systems find that they have no native support for IIS or PWS.This only really leaves Apache as a realistic alternative, but despite the fact that Apache is a superb application it is not quite a walk in the park to set up and configure. Even if or when you do get it up and running, it does not natively support ASP but can be made to run it using some interesting jiggery pokery so unless you only ever want to use PHP for dynamic sites, sooner or later you'll have to start doing some software surgery on your computer. Now, if you got this far without falling asleep, here we go:Windows Millennium can be made to run PWS. T... Read more

Answer:Site testing server on your hard drive

The advatages to running a testing server for dynamic sites are tremendous. You can 'upload' your site to the testing server (a folder on your hard drive) and fully test the ASP or PHP pages and any underlying database connections before loading your site up to its home on the web.If you use FrontPage you can also test your sites taking full advantage of FrontPage Server Extensions since you can install and configure them on your local testing server.Even for static sites there may still be CGI or PHP feedback form scripts that you need to test prior to upload. Finally, one important step I should have pointed out initially - security.Any web server software will 'listen' for traffic so you have to use some common sense (and a firewall) to prevent outside access.Good luck !Taran

Advanced Uninstaller PRO is able to uninstall any program without a trace. Advanced Uninstaller PRO can also remove a lot of items that other uninstallers can't even touch. It can repair broken registry entries, clean non-functional Start Menu shortcuts, uninstall annoying browser toolbars, plugins and hijackers, remove fonts and get rid of startup programs that run in your system tray and slow down your computer.

I have not used AUP so I can't give an opinion if it's any good. However, I learned the hard way that any time I feel the urge to uninstall stuff, tweak settings, clean the registry, etc I will make a new restore point and a new system image before doing anything. And that includes using Windows 7 built in tools. All of these so-called optimizers can easily bork a computer and turn it into a paper weight.

is there any program that can test my hardware to make sure they are still working the way they were when i first got them?

Answer:testing hardware program

Depends on what you want to test...

Usually you shouldn't need to test anything unless you're actually having problems such as data corruption, crashes, ect.

RAM can be tested with software such as Memtest86

If you check the manufacturer's site of your Hard Drive they usually have tools to diagnose and test your Hard Drive.

There are also other programs to test other peices of hardware, most are for benchmarking uses. Again, I don't really see a need to test anything else unless you are specifically having a problem.

If you are having a problem, please post what it is! Hope this helps

Answer:trying to make a testing program

Not sure how much ya know about programming, but here's the steps I'd prolly take. Maybe you can let us know what parts you specifically need help with.

The questions should be in an array so ya can randomly choose one (unless ya want to use a bunch of goto/labels - possible but not popular). I'd prolly load 'em from a text file so ya could use the app for other types of tests by using a different text file.

Ya need to devise a pattern for each question, such as putting the answer (TF, ABCD, etc.) as the first or last char of the question, then store the questions in an array. Or ya could use a second corresponding array for answers if you prefer. Obviously don't display the answer with the question, just use it internally to check for the correct response.

Create a loop that randomly picks and displays a question, checks the answer and does the math to monitor your progress.

Might also want to keep a record and omit questions asked, so none would be skipped or asked twice (this could be added after the program is somewhat functioning).

Btw, asking specific questions ("how do I -----?") will prolly get a better response.

Cheers, Mac

hi guyss..

well jus wanted to ask about this beta program, i have seen many guys, even those who aint using original windows are under this program, how do one gets this opportunity to get into windows beta program..

i tried to sign up but they say, i need to have a guest ID, which i might had got through email..

what this is all about, can i get an invite or something ??

Answer:Microsoft Beta Testing Program

Go to
http://connect.microsoft.com/
there is where you sign up for M$ beta programs. You will need a Live ID to do so.

Also there is
http://ideas.live.com/
to sign up for them.

At first you wont have many Beta to choose from. But as you sign up for some you will get invited to others. I started off with 2 Betas. I have now tested upwards of over 200 Betas for M$.

After using the new beta Eset Security Center I am thoroughly impressed with it. Its now an all in one antivirus, antispyware, firewall, and spam filter which is VERY lightweight.

Anybody else try this out yet?

Answer:Anybody here beta testing the new Eset program?

Yeah I used it for a few months and I was impressed. I haven't tried spam filter because it only works with outlook as of now.
edit: I had it on an XP machine I used at work, and at home I had it on my main vista install used it every day. Right now I'm just using regular NOD32

I found a utility that checks for vulnerability to the .wmf exploit, created by the same guy who made the unofficial patch. Its available at GRC: http://www.grc.com/miscfiles/wmf_checker_hexblog.exe

Unfortunately, a window at the end of the test said that it only tests for one type of vulnerability, and that there could be many more in teh wild.

Does anyone know of a site that can give your system a more thorough test for this exploit?

Sometimes randomly my HDD starts doing crackling noises alot and especially when i do something. This may last for like 5-20mins. Is there any program to check what program or other is using up all the bandwidth going/coming through to my HDD?

Answer:Program to check what is using my hard drive much?

You have one way already in your pc. Go into 'Task manager', then 'performance' tab, then 'resource monitor'. The 'Overview' tab tells you what is happening. It is very useful to show if you have enough RAM installed for the programs you are running.
*One idea though, do you have a defragmentation program installed, which is set to run in the background or 'smart/auto' mode ?

**If you want to try a more detailed program try; http://systemexplorer.net/download.php
Click on 'Download' tab.
(The link for the download is near the bottom of the site, just above the blue advert. 'Download installer version' is the one.)
Run it 'as administrator'. This program highlights the programs which have just been active with a coloured background, which may help you .

Hello all, I have just installed a hard drive monitoring program called HDD Health 2.1. Soon after I installed it an alert popped up on my screen advising that my hard drive (C) that contained my OS, programs and data had reached 46 degrees. What was worse however was that my other hard drive that only contains backups was reading 49 degrees. At the time I wasn't using that one at all, because I wasn't restoring or backing up. What is going on?

I dont know if this would go in gaming or not:

Ok i have my OS on one hard drive. I have another free hard drive (exact same kind as the OS is on) that i can put programs or what ever into.

As far as speed goes (least lag, load times, etc.) would it be best to put the application.... for example a game, onto the hard drive that carries the OS or into the empty hard drive?

Or would it be best to put the game onto the OS hard drive and then put the paging file into the empty hard drive (non OS)?

Answer:Running A program from Non OS Hard Drive

I personally have Windows XP on one harddrive along with a "storage" partition, then I install all my applications and games on the separate hard drive. Im sure it would load faster as it doesn't have to load OS stuff from the same hard drive. My pagefile is on the windows partition i guess. I didn't know you could change the pagefile location?

Answer:how to get a program off hard drive to install again

Read the license agreement you OK'd when you installed it, I am pretty sure that you are not allowed to reinstall it on a different system. If you install it without activating it, it is a trial version and I believe it will work for something like 30 days and bug you periodically to activate it.You can download and install free of any charge Openoffice.org for any system (Windows, Mac, and Linux). It can open MS Office formats as well as many others. You can set it to save in MS Office formats by default so everything is more portable. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I have the Pinnacle Studio Delux which I use to put still photos with transitions and music and burn to DVD or vhs tapes. In Pinnacle booklet, it says it will work better if it is on it's own hard drive, so I had someone install a second hard drive for me, but it does not work.
1. I cannot download program to this second hard drive (no programs), the only thing I have been able to use this second hard drive for is for storage (photos/documents, etc.). I am think ing this second hard drive has something missing, is the second hard drive suppose to have it's own operating system?
2, I install the Pinnacle to the master hard drive and it is now not working correctly there either, it runs real slow and when you go to render the video, it keeps crashing. The program worked fine before I installed a secondary hard drive, it was a little slow but it worked fine, now I cannot get this to work correctly at all. I had the person who put the second hard drive in come to check it, but they said it is not the computer, it is the program, but, my question is why did it work before and also why can't I use the second hard drive for anything but storage?
If you can solve any of these problems, it would be WONDERFUL!

I am looking for a program that will:-

1. Clone my primary hard drive to a secondary hard drive which will be bootable if needed to replace the primary drive, and

2. Update the cloned drive with all subsequent changes made to the primary hard drive.

Anybody got any suggestions.

[I am running Windows XP Home SP3]

Answer:Program To Clone Hard Drive

Sounds like you are asking for RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks).

The level of RAID you are referencing is RAID1. This mirrors 2 drives so that if one fails, the other still works, and data is not lost.

Kind of expensive to implement though, you will have to judge if it is practical for your situation.

Unless of course, you don't need to make the changes constantly. If you are just looking to update daily rather than real-time then norton ghost might be all you need.

Answer:hard drive program transfer

You can't! You can move files, but the registry and file assosiations need to be set on the primary system partition and also have the support files installed. The install program will install dll's and other system files in many locations so it is more than a matter of just moving them.

Just read an article that suggested that a "must have" is a Hard Drive Monitoring Program. They did not tout any particular one. It was suggested that this type program is essential because it can not only provide you with the condition of your HD but also give you a "heads up" as to when your HD is in trouble and about to fail.

I was wondering if any of our group use such a program and, if so, which one, and the pros and cons relative to such a program.

Thanks,

you can get a free demo of Easeus data recovery wizard which you can use to look at the data and see what it could recover. They tell you to use the demo and if you can see the files you are looking for then pay for the full prog about 70$. I used it to recover the data from an external usb hard drive with a master boot record failure.

Windows 10 did an update on my wife's desktop that was incompatible with the Nvidia graphic drivers on it. As a result, the dual monitors no longer display. We took the computer to the local Microsoft store and they were fully aware of the problem and are working on it. But, after two weeks, the problem has not been solved. Meanwhile we bought a new desktop and had Microsoft empty the entire contents of the C: drive onto an external hard drive. They did and showed me that the external drive contained the root directory and program data that contains years of work using Lightroom.

I brought the external hard drive home and connected it. Luckily I can see the User Libraries but not the Program Data.

Is there some way that I can make everything visible in the external hard drive so that I can copy the contents to the new desktop?

Answer:Need to see program files on external hard drive.

If, by program data, you mean applications, then sorry, you're not going to be able to "migrate" the applications from the external drive to your new desktop simply by copying folders. Applications have components installed in many different places, including the registry, and it involves a lot more than copying folder from Program Data to migrate them.

LapLink sells a product (PC Mover) that IS able to migrate apps from one PC to another, but you either have to (1) install it on the first PC and migrate to the second, or (2) have a backup image of the first PC and mount that on the second to do the migration. However, it MIGHT work if you have a copy of the first. I would check with LapLink to see if their product will do app migration in your situation. IF it does, then you will be able to install it on the new desktop and do the migration.

However, there is a second problem alluded to by your last question. Win10 enables FastStartup by default. With this turned on, all partitions that are open when Win10 shuts down are put into a hibernated state -- which prevents them from being accessed until the original machine comes out of hibernation. I ran into this problem when I was dual-booting Win8.1 and Win10TP and using a shared NTFS partition. I had to disable FastStartup on both Win8.1 and Win10 to be able to safely used a shared partition. I don't know if there is a way to access the partitions in the external drive, if FastStartup was enabled in Win10... Read more

I have a Dell XP that must be old because I am. Anyway I ordered it with two hard drives, both 30Gig. Both are full. Who knew back six or seven years ago that 30-gigs was (were?) not enough?

I have tried to keep C:/ for programs and D:/ for files. I would like to get an external HDD and move programs onto it in order to free up space on C:/

What kinds of problems will I run into? Will the registry be able to keep up or tag along or edit itself or...? Is it even doable? Will it give me nightmares?

Thanx!
http://www.techsupportforum.com/imag...4-dontknow.gif

Answer:Move program files to new hard drive

There is no real simple way to do that. the only way I know of is to uninstall the programs one by one and reinstall them point at the external drive instead of the C:\ Drive. the best way to do it, in all honsty is to just buy a larger hdd (500gb are around 50.00 these days) and just do a direct drive to drive clone from your old HDD to the New one. A Program like Symmantec Ghost (it's not free but there are others out there that are) will clone everything at a bit level and automatically resize the partition to encompass all the free space.

Just Moving the Program Files directory will only serve to make the programs non-usable. Registry entries will not follow the move.

Is there a program that logs every registry entry and hard drive files when a new program is installed. I need a program that shows every instance of an install. I have UNINSTALLER on my computer, which indicates it will do this...but it seems to miss files from programs. Is there a way to log every, single entry??

Answer:Registry/hard drive logger program

Revo Uninstaller Pro have that feature.http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.htmlBasically, you want a program with an output like the one Metallica uses in his Malware Removal articles on Malwarebytes?https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/177872-removal-instructions-for-splendor-search/#entry1015081Someone told me the name of that utility once, but I forgot it. I'll ask in the IRC tonight, if no one replied here by then.

No one, here, can answer what happened. But, whether you did it manually or it was by default, once a week. You should have everything on "backup and restore". Set it to a date prior to your problem and eveything will be restored.

Does not work? Use system restore. Back up and restore will restore your personal data. System resore returns the OS to the restore point date.

I am not sure as to what you actually lost, but I have given you the answer for either situation.

Hi!

I have windows 8.1 and c-drive is system drive.
Programs are mainly installed to C: but I have also some programs installed to E: Program Files, Program Files (68), Program Data etc .
Now I want to to move E-drive contents to another hard drive (all files stored on e-drive).

I think the safest way is to reinstall all programs, but I don't want to do this. Also it is possible to move files to new partition which has another drive letter than e: and create link, but this I don't want to do either.

Can I do it like this:
1) Change e-drive letter to x
2) Create new e-drive to another hard drive
3) Copy e-drive contents to new e-dive
4) that is it?

Can I use normal copy - paste to copy all files?
I think register references are the same after these steps because drive letter and content of the e-drive are still the same.

Does my method work? It sound so easy to do. Is it "too easy"? Does it have any risks?

Best regards
Laakspen

Answer:Move program files to another hard drive

Yes, it should as long as the drive letter is the same and also I would move instead of copy to retain the ownership of the files.

I recently got a Solid State Drive to replace my other HDD & kept the HDD as a secondary storage drive.
Can I move the program files folders (Program files, Program files x86 & Prgram data)to the secondary drive to free up some space on the smaller SDD which has my windows installation on & Warcraft.
If I can, can I just drag & drop them?
I'm assuming I'll need to replace my desktop shortcuts as they won't follow the programs.

Answer:Move Program files to 2nd hard drive?

You will need to uninstall the programs you wish to remove from the SSD and then reinstall from the setup files to your secondary drive. Make sure you use custom install selecting the secondary drive path as your target for installation.
The reason you cannot just move the folders is that the program installations involve registry entries and by moving the folders these will be corrupted and the programs will not work.

Hi guys,
I recently bough a hard drive USB connector to take files from my old computer and put them on my new one. I have programs for which I since lost the discs and these include photoshop as well as some others. I was wondering as to whether there was a solution to moving the program to my new computer, as my old hard drive has all the correct files but not a setup.exe

Any help would be greatly appreciate. My old hard drive used XP, I'm currently using Vista.

Thanks,
Chazsan

Answer:Hard Drive Program Transfer Question

The only way would be to copy the Whole Windows drive over. Cause you would have to use the File Transfer wizard to move the stuff over. Even then you might not get everything you need.

Best bet acquire a new installer.

Hello
Is it possible format a hard drive and save a program ? The problem is I want to install Windows XP onto a hard drive that has windows 98, when I try installing over top of 98 I keep getting error messages saying it can not be done.
There is only one program I want keep that I have not got a disc for so I'm not bothered about losing the rest.
Thanks

Answer:Format hard drive but save program

No, If you format that's pretty much it.
