usb harddrive enclosure -vs- usb external harddrive

Question: usb harddrive enclosure -vs- usb external harddrive

I realize one is just an enclosure and you provide the harddrive, and one is a true harddrive, but which is better and whats really the difference?

Preferred Solution: usb harddrive enclosure -vs- usb external harddrive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Greetings!!

I was wondering I bought an external harddrive that connects to my computer using usb. I also have a printserver, can I connect the external harddrive to the printserver so I can access it from my network? I been told if I leave the enclosure powered on at all times it could fail much faster and easiler then shutting it off when I dont use it, is this true or can I just leave it on at all times?

Thanks

Answer:Connecting enclosure/external harddrive to a printserver

You can connect it to the printserver no problem if the plug fits. The printserver probably won't make it available on the network though Thre are devices that can share USB storage, but they are not called or marketed as print servers.

The enclosure could fail tomorrow no matter what you do Always keep a backup of your precious data.

Ok so this is gonna sound a little crazy. the other day my laptop would not load windows. Safe mode or regular. I tried just about everything. I was not wanting to do a rebuild yet on the drive since it has all of our pictures on it.
I went out and got an external enclosure for it and tried to hook it up to my Desktop (also running XP). Everytime I hook it up it freezes my Desktop up. I have tried to View it under my computer and also tried the right click "manage" option under my computer. when I look at the list of devices it tells me that the drive is working fine. But the Location is set at "0".

When I click on the manage drive option my computer more or less freezes and I am not able to see what letter it is being assigned to the external harddrive. I am only wanting to get to my pictures since we have hundreds of them saved to this drive. Once I have them I want to Xfer them to my desktop and then reformat the Laptop drive to use as an external HD now and junk my laptop.

Answer:Cant view laptop harddrive in External enclosure

In the first instance, prior to removing the HD from the laptop was it correctly detected by the bios?

As regards XP not detecting your external USB (+freezing), in your shoes I would boot from a Linux Live cd (Puppy is good as it's only 100mb and runs in ram) and then try to connect the external usb to it.

If Puppy also has issues detecting the external then I think you will need to use a prog like BiNG or PM to check the state of the partition.

Good Luck

I just purchased these two items:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817146063

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822153012

and the problem is that the coolmax enclosure wont read the harddrive. I installed it correctly (this is not my first 2.5 external hdd), and the computer detects the harddrive. It says that it is installed and ready to use, but now drive is popping up in "my computer". I dont think that the harddrive is to big for the enclosure, its only 40gb and most enclosures maxes out at 40gb. I could not find out what this enclosure's max compatibility is, so i hope that this is not the problem.

It is not the enclosure that is broken, because i put a different harddrive in the coolmax enclosure and it works. And i tried the Fujitsu hdd in another enclosure and it does not work. So it is definitly the hdd

The harddrive is a ATA-6 and the coolmax enclosure is a IDE ATA 100. I dont know what the 100 stands for, but i dont think that is the problem.

any help would be greatly appreciated. This is a gift for my girlfriend and i really want this to work.

Answer:2.5 harddrive enclosure will not read the harddrive

Have you foratted the drive? . . Windows will not "see" a drive until it has been formated.

Right click on My Computer . . select Manage . . disc management . . right click on the drive and select format

I currently have a laptop that is a few years old, anyhow I am building my own computer with a friend of mine. I have a external 120 gig Western Digital External Harddrive hooked up to my laptop now. (The external harddrive is brand new) I need a harddrive for the new computer I am building and was wondering would it work if i opened up the external harddrive casing and removed it from there and installed it in my computer i am building. Whats your thoughts on the change in power supply and could it work and what?

Pat

Answer:External Harddrive into Interal Harddrive

if you are building a laptop... no. it is built completely differently.
with a desktop computer you would not be able to either because the connection inside its casing is different. its better to keep your external the way it is and get an internal. you could then use your external as a backup.

Hello,

My desktop computer's motherboard was fried in a tragic lightning accident, but the hard drive is intact. I would like to purchase an enclosure for the hard drive and use it as an external hard drive. I'm posting here because I'm worried about compatibility.

Here are the hard drive details:
Seagate, S/N 90Z7588X
ST 380215A
P/N 9CY011-305
Firmware 3.AAD
Date code 08257
Barracude 7200.10
80 Gbytes

Will that work with any of these enclosures:

I have taken a USB hardrive out of its enclosure, and installed it internnally the bios doesn't see it neither does windows although it does take longer to boot with it plugged in, any ideas on how i can get this functioning.

Answer:Usb Harddrive out of enclosure

Try changing the jumper settings on the drive. Chances are since it was installed via USB, it was probably set at "Master". Look on the side of the drive, and there should be a sticker detailing the settings. Place it on "Slave". If there's no diagram on the actual drive, search the model number on line with "jumper diagram" and see if that helps.

Can anyone suggest a cheap but good harddrive enclosure that holds at least 3 harddrives? Im really looking for 4 hdd holder, but 3 will be fine. I have looked on newegg and tigerdirect, but they all seem to have extra components that i dont need, like fans, and are very expensive. the one im currently using is an internal harddrive holder that i salvaged out of an old computer.

i am not trying to find a dock for making my (internal) harddrives hotswappable. i want to be able to move all of my harddrives at once, like as if they were all in a box, aka the enclosure

Answer:Multibay harddrive enclosure

LOL, I would've suggested both of those etailers. You might look into CDW r some other big IT company. I suspect they won't be less money than what Newegg and TD offer. Just tolerate the "extras"?

I am looking to hook up some IDE or SATA items like a hard drive and/or dvd burner to my laptop. My laptop's "port replicator" has a bunch of usb ports and I also think it has the power source for a dvd or hard drive. So basically I am looking for suggestions of manufacturers of enclosures and/or cables that will allow me to connect ide/sata/ata (I realize they are different connections, thus i will have to buy different cables) to a USB port.

of if they are a dime a dozen and the quality is equal between different manufacturers, that would be helpful to know too.

thanks

Answer:Solved: Harddrive enclosure

You are probably stuck with either USB 2.0 or IEE-1394 (Firewire) external drives for that rig. There are hundreds of USB 2.0 external drive enclosures that accept a standard 3.5" IDE drive, that's how I do this trick.

I just bought a new HP notebook last week and my external hard drive enclosure came today from amazon for my old dell 80gb hard drive. I can view the folders (see attatched) but I cant find my desktop or itunes/pictures/documents ect.
My HD enclosure came with a mini-cd with drivers on it but they are all for windows 98. I am running vista on my new notebook and XP2nd edition on my old HD. What do I have to do to see the desktop on my old HD, or simply find the damn files I'm looking for?

Answer:Solved: harddrive enclosure ???

Those files are in the Documents and Settings/"usernick" folder (you sure have checked there, I reckon), and they are protected by some kinky technology, meaning to make them safe. There are quite a lot of threads instructing how to access such "private" data here.

Hey, I had a put my old laptop harddrive into a external harddrive enclosure and I'm having trouble finding the majority of the contents.

I'm able to locate about 7GB's of the harddrive's ~55gb total, but the rest I'm unable to find. I can see "hidden files", so I don't think that's the problem.

Do you have WinXP Service Pack 1 installed? If not, now is the time.

When it works in Win2k, do ALL of your USB devices work with it?

What Service Pack do you have installed in Win2k?

How old is this Sony laptop? Why do you have to use an add-in card? Aren't there any USB ports on the Sony?

My Dell Vostro 1400 Laptop recently quit working. Its only 4 months old.
I turned it on and it came to a screen saying,

"Windows dould not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
"\windows\system32\config\system"
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

I inserted the setup disc and booted from it, when I got the the Repair option it says,"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue."

So I took the computer down to the local computer store and they put in a new 130 GB harddrive, ran the setup disk again and it displayed the same missing HDD message.

Anyone have any Ideas of what could be wrong???
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

Answer:Seagate Harddrive test tool fail but harddrive data seems intact

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

Or the Seagate tool. Whatever you have. Your title is confusing.

Hi,

I recently had a very strong magnet. The magnet was then stuck (By a child) to my laptop. I then had errors on boot. I tried reinstalling Vista with the restore disk, but I recieved "Error - Cannot set temp path".

I today purchased a 250gb harddrive (a upgrade from my 120gb), and then Vista installed fine.

Now it runs fine, but I get bluescreens after random amounts of time, with errors involving a windows file. Unfortunately, I don't have the bluescreen error details at the moment. I have however uploaded the 3 minidumps from the 3 occasions.

Is it possible that another part of the computer was damaged by the magnet? Ram?

Thank's,

I have pretty old secondary hard drive (11 years) and currently in power settings there is an option to put hard drive in sleep mode if it's been idle for X minutes. Is it a good idea to disable this setting and let the harddrive spin all the time, since as I know, frequently enabling/disabling hard drives makes more damage than never putting harddrive to sleep.

Answer:Harddrive health with harddrive auto-stop in idle

Is the drive going to sleep now ?

You should consider buying a new drive to replace that one, then copy your data over before it dies

I am currently backing up weekly to a small external drive.. it is a small 20gigger. It has taken about 1 year or so to fill up. Now i am thinking long term.. i am considering purchasing a "network harddrive", one that is between 500gigz to 1tb. There is a smaller/more affordable Seagate external drive.. but it is not a "network harddrive".. it has 1.5tb.. versus a network drive that is about 2tb but it cost about 314.

My question is, thinking long term.. and considering the setup i have.. which is a regular PC acting as a server.. what should i get?

Your suggestions are appreciated

My T400 (bought last July) harddrive dead on me Sunday. I called helpcenter and received a replacement harddrive today. It was very fast. They asked me to return the old one. I have a concern about the security of my old harddrive. There are lots of personal information (data and files) on the old harddrive. If I return the old one, is there a chance my personal data be leaked? Is there any way I can delete the data and file on the old harddrive? I have no access to my old harddrive now. Any comments and suggestions will be appreciated greatly. Thank you for your time.

It will almost certainly be trashed, but you can't be 100% sure.  If you have a big magnet around, you could set the old one on it for a while - that should do the trick.

Answer:External Harddrive

First step, Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Create a restore point and name it something like "Before USB Fix". This is to bail you out if something goes wrong during the following process and makes things worse.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"
-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function. I don't have one yet, so I haven't had time to modify th... Read more

Answer:external harddrive

There is an old theory that you could put it an airtight bag and into the freezer for a few hours; then connect up and you may be able to get the data off it.More likely though the drop will have caused some physical damage - you could always open up and have a look in the hope that it is something simple like a disconnection of somesort.I don't hold out much hope though.click here for a new option; click here for a smaller and cheaper option.

JBOD is a form of RAID. How big is the external box? U could always partition the drive into 2 separate partition. read the manual to see if u can change the setting. What u want to do is remove the RAID settings (JBOD).

It said to right click on the drive the External harddrive is and click delete partition. I did that, and it just disappeared from My Computer. Now I see it's still there on the lower right hand of the screen by the clock. It is also listed under device managers.

I've read for help, and they all say to go to disk management, right click on it and assign it a drive letter. I just do not see the external harddrive there to right click on it.

Please help. I hope I didn't lose any data on it!

alright just got a 250GB external hardrive.. well its scheduled to backup all my files tonight since i dont want it to slow down my computer right now because i do use it alot just wondering when everything is backed up.. can i turn the thing off?

Like common sense says i can turn it off but leave it pluged into my computer.. will this cause anything bad to happen? will my files all be there even if its off for like a month or more?

Just want to know because i dont want to put files on it and delete them here and then find out that they are no longer on the back up harddrive.

Answer:External Harddrive

yep, you can turn it off, unplug it, move it, etc with no problems. It only needs to stay plugged in and on if you are using automatic backup software.

You will need to check that your system bios supports USB Bootable devices first, and if necessary you should be able to install windows onto it and then make it the default boot device in system bios.

I have a window's XP computer and I've had it for a few years now and it's been good, at first it was really fast and then it got slow but now it has got to the point where it takes about 20 minutes just for me to load my internet browser and MSN.I have an external hard drive which everything is on, all my files from my doccuments and when I last defraged my computer (about 2 weeks ago, i do it monthy not that it helps at all) it said I had 75% space on my C: drive. What do you think I should do?I have done everything that people have reccomended to speed up my computer.Do I install my programs onto my external hard drive, so they are no longer on the C: drive or do something else, please help me! lol

Answer:Help with external harddrive

Since you have already been sensible by keeping backups of all your own files, I would re-install Windows from scratch. Nothing is more likely to get your PC back to it's former speed.

Question: external harddrive

I have an internal harddrive, that I wanted to make to an external drive, tat I can connect to my network. This way I can see it from several of my computers, if I can connected to my network. If its possible I need assistance on what kind of adapter I would need.

thanks

Answer:external harddrive

You need to search for "hard drive enclosures" on a site like Newegg or Amazon. Be sure to get one that is the right size (2.5" or 3.5") and connection type (IDE or SATA) to match the drive you have.

There are two basic ways to network it:

a.) Attach it to a PC that has file sharing/discovery enabled. The catch is the PC must be turned on for the drive to be recognized on the network. A USB connected drive enclosure is usually much less expensive than an enclosure that connects directly to a network (see below).

b.) Buy an enclosure that can be connected directly to a network. Search for "NAS enclosure" or "Network Attached Storage Enclosure" - again, be sure to purchase the correct size and connection type to match your existing drive.

Hope this helps.

Question: External Harddrive

I purchased an external hard drive (WD Essential, 500gb) that is used exclusively to create Macrium Reflect images for three different computers.

Computers are:
HP Laptop with Vista
Dell Desktop with Vista
Computer I built with Win7 as the OS

When I plugged in the external hard drive to each computer, it trys to install the external software. This worked no problem with Win 7. With the other two computers it says the external hard drive was NOT installed properly. However, I can see the drive in windows explorer on all the computers. I had no problem creating Macrium Images for each computer with Macrium.

I can restore the images on the Win 7 and the Dell computers without any issues.

The HP Laptop is causing me a problem. When the external drive is connected, it will NOT boot. It hangs up very early in the boot process with Macrium Rescue Disk in the CDrom. Without the external drive connected it boots from the rescue disk. WD techies were no help to solve the issue.

I did extensive reseach to solve this issue and I was told to boot into the bios and change something (I never could find out what to change).

If anyone has a clue I can use the help. Thank you.

Answer:External Harddrive

G'day Huffman,

I'm not sure if this will solve the problem, but with the BIOS setting......do you remember if you were told to look for an option called Legacy USB or something very similar to that?

The Legacy USB option is used to tell the computer, before any Windows drivers boot, that there is a USB keyboard and/or mouse connected to the computer. I wonder if that is what is required by your HP to "see" the WD Essentials USB drive? Can you have a look and see if you have that option in your BIOS, and let usknow whether it is turned "ON", or "OFF"?

Regards,
Golden

My 2 year old computer has been freezing up and crashing lately so I'm going to be wiping the hard drive and starting over. I'm trying to back up all of my music and important files but I'm going to lose a lot. I would like to avoid this situation in the future but I'm not sure what is causing the problem.

I'm thinking of buying an external harddrive for files that I will want to keep for a long time (like music and school stuff) so that I can wipe the drive when it gets messed up and not lose everything. The guy at Bestbuy explained it in a way that made it sound like they were essentially uncorruptable but I'm assuming they have some major drawbacks or people would use them for everything.

Alternately, is there some kind of upgrade I can do on my computer (its a desktop) so that it will run better and I won't have to deal with wiping it at all? I'm not sure if I'd need RAM or memory or what.

If it helps, here's what I know about the machine:
it runs Windows Vista
HP Pavilion a6110n PC
64 X2 Dual-core processor
2048 MB system memory
320GB hard drive
i'm currently using up 115 GB

Thank you!

Answer:External Harddrive or more ram?

well, an external hard drive is nice to keep your stuff on like you said. theyre pretty reliable for the most part if you get a good one. you could add another GB of RAM if you want, but the 2GB you have now is pretty standard for older computers. you have a 2 year old computer which more than likely has a lot of crud on it that is slowing it down.

you should try to clean your computer first, and use operating system reinstalls as kind of a last resort if youre not able to clean your PC, or if there is just too much junk on it to make the time worth it.

http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=106650 - Try this. It's a link to a basic computer maintenance thread. give this a try before you decide to wipe out your hard drive.

I have an overful internal hard drive and a mostly empty 500GB external. Is there any major reason I shouldn't use the external to install games onto? I have the external plugged in to the same computer and it's never been disconnected as of yet except by powering off while computer is off as well.

Answer:External Harddrive

i think the problem with installing games on your external hdd is it takes longer to access the drive. my cousin installed age of conan on his external drive on accident and it would take forever to load the game but once he realized what he did he reinstalled it and that fixed his problem

I've had this harddrive for aboot a year now, and it's been working very nicely, but recently it just stopped working, it won't autoplay or anything, but when I look for it in the hardware area it recognizes it. What might the problem be/is it fixable without losing all my files, or am I out of luck? I have also taken it out of the casing and just slaving it in my computer, and no dice...

Answer:WD External 80g harddrive

What exactly is the "hardware area"? If the drive is recognized in one way or another, you should be able to use a data recovery program to save your info. Luckily, it's only 80gb and chances are it isn't full (imagine if it was a full 500gb drive!). Anyway, be sure you have a place to save the recovered data; either lots of space on drive C: or a different external drive, or whatever. Here's a list of free data recovery programs:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/Partition_Find_&_Mount_d5740.html *
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Disk_Investigator_d1341.html
.... and one over at Snapfiles http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/softperfect-file-recovery/spfilerecovery.html

* = these are primarily for 'rebuilding' or recovering an entire partition, at the partition level, versus file recovery at the file level.

I haven't necessarily used all of these, I just listed some here for your convenience. I have used PC Inspector; it isn't super user friendly, it isn't super fast, but it does work really well for a free program.

Good luck!

I also want to boot straight from the external drive. I also do not really care if it is'nt recommended lol. If this is possible would it also be possible to dual-boot with XP? I have both install disks for Vista and XP and I am willing to buy software.

Please could you tell me exactly what to do and what programs I need.

Hi, i think this issue has been posted before but i really could not understand what was going in the previous thread so i was hoping for a step by step of what i should do.

I have been using an external usb harddrive which worked perfectly fine for a while but stopped being detected in windows xp (am running windows 7 now) all of a sudden. When i plug it in, the sound of a usb device being detected is made and it attempts to install the driver to run the mass storage however, no drive shows up anymore in my computer. Also, under disk management it does not pick up this drive either. I have tried different computers/usb slots as well as cables and it does the same thing.

Thanks for your help in advance.

You should get an external hard drive enclosure kit if you plan on switching around the hard drives as the externals. Otherwise, just get an external hard drive. I believe that you can boot from an external USB hard drive by changing the settings in the BIOS.

Question: External Harddrive

I have a Nexxtech harddrive enclosure, and it doesn't seem to want to work for an extended period of time. Once I get it to work and be recognized, I will turn it off, and the next time I turn it on, the computer will recognize it as a RAW disc. That is, unformatted. When I try to access it again after that, explorer will freeze. The jumper settings are set to master, so that's not the problem. I tried to put the harddrive into the computer, and all worked out fine. I tried another harddrive in the enclosure, and everything worked out great. So, its not the enclosure, or the harddrive, or any of the connections. I'm out of ideas. The harddrive is a samsung of sorts, and 80gig. I've formatted it to NTFS, because that's how I need it formatted. On a very rare occasion, the harddrive will show up, and will have no issues, but any files that I previously put on it are missing. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

You could Google Fat32 while waiting for an answer here.

As to formatting the drive, that is easy.
Attach it to the computer & open my computer & right click your new drive & choose Format.
Choose Fat32 from the dropdown menu.
Do not choose the Quick format.

Do a full format.
A full format takes a very long time to complete.

Question: External Harddrive

I have a 500GB usb 2.0 Netec external hard drive.

It has worked fine since I bought it about 5 months ago. However this morning I couldn't open a folder on the drive as it said it was corrupted. Strangely later on I could open that file but not a different one. I couldn't find a reason for this or how to fix it so I decided to try and fix it by reformatting it and just copy over the data lost from the my other computer.

However I can only run a quick format the long one does not complete. If I run the quick format and and try to copy data over it has a slow transfer rate and not all the files are copied correct and some do not open.

Does anybody know why I cannot copy data over successfully and how I can fix this problem?

I am running windows 7 home premium on a acer aspire TimelineX I have had no problems in the past with this drive and was surprised it had an error in the first place as I always safely removed hardware to prevent this problem.

Thanks in advance

My sister pulled out the USB cable to my external hard drive when it was in use and dropped it on the floor from 2-3 feet. It turns on but when I do turn it on I hear a small buzzing sound for 1 second and my computer doesn't detect it as plugged in. Is the hard drive broken completely? And is there any place that specializes in fixing it since I had a lot of data stored in there.

Answer:External Harddrive Help

Yea, its probably gone. There are places to recover data on drives such as this one but they cost alot of money. I would put the DRIVE itself in another PC using the EIDE Cable and try to recover the data. Beyond that you can RMA it and hope they recover the data for you.

Happy New Year to AllThis problem has been annoying me for quite a while and i am at the end of my imagination on how to solve it.I bought a number of cases that are able to accept what were internal HD's and use them instead as external devices connected by 2.0 USB connections. The 2 computers i am eneavoring to use the device on are both running WinXP Pro SP2.Both computers have front and rear 2,0 USB ports.   I have tried 2 computers and 2 different inernal HD's.Both HD's contained data/programs/etc. The 1st was an 80gb. The 2nd is a 8.2 gb. The larger had been in an XPpro machine as a primary (with problems associated with that particular HD ,software not hardware problems). The 8.2 is from a win98se as a slave.    I configured both to slave before installing them in the case. The case has it's own power supply.  I am using a 250gb external HD constantly in one of the 2 tested computers with no problems. I also use Flash drives between 512 mb and 8gb on both on a regular basis without problems.  On one of the 2 computer for a very brief instance   there was a "new hardware found" and nothing after that. Hello All,

I keep having an issue with my Maxtor My Touch 4 USB hard drive on my Windows 7 64 bit desktop (Dell XPS 8300). Randomly on power ups of my PC, this external hard drive is not recognized and shows as an "Unknown Device" under the USB controllers in Device Manager. (Please see screenshot attached) When I say randomly I mean one time I boot and the hard drive is there and it works perfectly, the next time I boot, it is not recognized.

To fix this issue, I can uninstall one of the two "USB Root Hubs", reboot, and the hard drive will reappear.

Why would this hard drive show correctly after one boot up and not another when nothing on the PC has changed? And how can I keep this from happening?

Thanks for your input.

Hi,
I am trying to connect an external harddrive to my computer via USB. Whenever I plug the drive in i get the following error message:USB-device was not recognized. The drive itself works fine however, since I tried it on my other PC.
I heard it might be that I have to update my chipset, but first of all I am not sure of how to do that and if that is the correct solution for my problem. By the way, I am using Windows XP.
Please can someone be so nice to help me?
Thank you very much in advance

Well, I'm kinda new to all of this, and I'd like some help or a link to some help, if possible :]

two things:

1. - Would it be possible to install Linux and run it off of an external harddrive that connects through usb without modifying any other parts of the computer?

I ask because I want to experiment with Linux and I'm afraid to do so on this computer's harddrive (it's shared with other people...). I read about the distro cd's and wondered if I could do much the same with an external harddrive. (so I can go beyond just testing it)

Also, there is a second computer that I can use (only in emergencies), but I can't modify it at all... so I was wondering if I could use that external harddrive without having to change anything on the emergency computer.

2. - The second is what extra would I have to do outside of regular installation to make this work, if it's possible?
(I would just ask what I have to do step by step, but I figure you get enough of that and there were plenty of places I found that can tell me that)

The shared computer is Windows XP and the emergency one is Vista

thanks to anyone who bothers to read this and can help
and to everyone else, have a good day

get the Knoppix CD
you can boot directly from it and run Linux w/o an install

your real issue is booting from USB; the bios must support that option or all is nor not.

All you do is

mount the ext-USB
install the Linux on it

Recently my friend's 75 GB external harddrive sort of broke. The harddrive was separated into two drives, K and I. The problem happened when his computer restarted itself. He then checked the harddrive when the computer loaded up and it turns out that 1/3 of the content on K drive was missing while the data on I was unaffected. Also there's one folder in K where it says "K:\Camera Kodak is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." if he tries to open it. (that folder has many subfolders in it) Please help! Thanks!

Hello Eveyone!!!I have a Sony Vaio laptop. it is an older computer but runs pretty good. I just don't have enough hard drive space. I have two hard drives for a desktop computer though and I was wondering if i could hook them up to my laptop and use them as external hard drive. (of course only want to use one)they are not external hard drives though. i dont know a lot about computers but i do know enough to get me through the process of hooking a hard drive up. if you could please help!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answer:internal harddrive for external use?????????

It should work with a hard drive enclosure, but these are usually USB 2 or Firewire. It sounds like you may have USB 1.1 on that Sony, so if it is functional and lightning speed is not essential, it should be OK.

Hi, hope this is in the right section. But I think it has more to do with windows than hardware.

I bought an enclosure for my old broken desktop's hard drive, connected it to my laptop, but whenever I try to go into it it just says "Access Denied"

I have tried changing the drive's letter, I've looked at permissions and everything is ticked, and I've gone into advanced and changed ownership, yet it still says access denied.

I tried going into safe mode and I can access it, and I copied a random file over to my C drive and it works. So I'm assuming its not a hardware problem, it just refuses to give me access on my regular (administrator) account.

I've tried searching around and most solutions seem to be the things I have already tried. Perhaps there are some settings I need to fiddle around with in safe mode, but I'm not too experienced so don't want to play around too much. So any advice on what to try would be great, it'd be a real hassle to have to go into safe mode and copy/paste everytime I wanted to access a file. I'm using windows 7 home premium or whatever silly name it has.

Answer:Cannot Access External Harddrive

Have you tried any other hard drives in the enclosure?

I am pretty sure everyone has their favorites but are there any brands/models to avoid? I am looking at storing videos mostly (90%) with some photos and documents (10%). I assume USB 2.0. but I am not really concerned about transfer speed.

Thanks in advance,
William

I hope this is not too vague a question

Recently, my motherboard fired, but the Hard drive was uneffected. Since i had a lot of info on the hard drive i tryed to find people who could take the info off the hard drive for me. I then had this great idea of just putting my hard drive into a "Hard Drive Enclosure Kit". Well, i did that and it worked great. But theres one problem, I can't seem to get into the Owner folder of the hard drive, for evey time i do, it brings up.

L: \Documents and Settings\Owner is not accesible

Access is deniedClick to expand...

Do i have to manually install the hard drive into my computer (and how?), or theres jsut no way in?
