Preferred Solution: USB drive doesn't show my files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: USB drive doesn't show my files

Have you tried the same USB on a different pc? If not, do so.

Hello! I have external Samsung G3 USB station. I had two different partitions: one 'primary' (just for files) and one 'logical' (for files also). All the time I use WinXP, Linux and Vista on different computers mostly. Everything was fine... But when I bought a brand new DVD with Win7 and installed on my brand new laptop the strange things became. Now I?ll try to define my problem as much as possible clearly and accurately.
My laptop (with Win7) shows that 'logical' drive but when I go in there I can't see my folders and files (they are not hidden of course!).
In properties I can see that these files ARE there (I suppose that by the free and used space of that partition and I really know how GBs was there so in properties seems that anything is not lost).
When I connect drive to a different computer with let's say Vista it doesn't show these files also. Same with XP. But I can reach my files on Linux.
Another strange thing is that all the information in the other partition ('primary' drive) is accessible without any probs.
Now I copied all these files into Linux and used to format that partition (NTFS) and made it 'primary' also (I did it on Win7). So I have two ?primary? drives now. Then I brought all the information (from Linux) back into that drive (under my investigation). Everything was fine and I was so glad... till I restarted mtfk Computer

I installed the SATA drive. Formatted it. Assigned it a letter. It won't show up in My Computer, but I can access it by typing in the drive letter in Windows Explorer and when I do this it comes up under My Computer in the "Folders" side pane

Data writes and reads from the drive fine.

I've tried formatting it and deleting the partition and creating a new one.

I have a prob with my Seagate 1TB external hard drive working on my G4 Powerbook (Leopard OSX). I have a Maxtor 200 gb drive that works perfectly. But The 1TB drive doesn't always appear on the desktop but does show in the system profiler. When it does show up on the desktop my files missing from from folders. Finally on the few times that files show up, I can't open them. I had error messages about permission to open the files but the drive and files all have read/write permission.

I use the drive for backup. The files on this drive are from the Maxtor drive, random disks and my thinkpad which runs Vista.
Any insite would be greatly appreciated.

Whenever I delete something and send it to the Recycle Bin, the icon will change to show that it's full, but when I open the Recycle Bin, it takes a while to load and when it does load, there will be nothing in it (window is just white except for the taskbars on the top and side) and the bottom-left side will just say "0 items." What's going on here and how do I fix it?

Answer:Recycle Bin Doesn't Show Files

When did you first notice this ? Have you done anything different since you first noticed it like install or uninstall something or download something new ?

Not saying I can help you but just throwing out ideas that may help you remember something that may have caused the problem.

Hello there,

I'm having an issue that's more an annoying thing than really an issue. Nevertheless, I hope you can help me with it.
When I want to search in Windows 10 by pressing start and just typing, no files like .docx's or .mp3's, or just any personal files, are found. I think the only items that are found are items in the Windows settings and things like that, and installed programs. I do find what I search for when I click on 'Search in my stuff' (I hope this is the right translation), but I just want the results immediately. As far as I know, Windows 7 did that without a problem. Does anybody know how to solve this?

Thinks I have tried so far:
1) Check at indexing options whether the right folders are getting searched (they are).
2)The 'Always search for file name or content'-box is ticked in options in Windows explorer (even though this isn't really what I'm trying to achieve)
3) Reconstructing the index
Again, I hope the translations of the terms are correct, if they are not, I hope you still understand what I mean.

Thanks in advance,
Japeroen

Answer:Start search doesn't show files

The solution is to use a different program. Cortana's search (My Stuff) seems to be limited to what's indexed.. far from ideal in my view.

I suggest
a. Classic Shell start menu - properly represents a hierarchical start menu with subfolders (which the Win 10 menu fails to do) and provides a search box which behaves as you want if you elect to search for files and folders as well as everything else.
b. Everything by voidtools (fast indexed search, much preferred to Windows search by users, and faster, more flexible and accurate)
- I use Locate32, similar indexing.
All freeware.

My computer failed to boot a few weeks ago. I took out the C drive and put it in an external drive case on my other computer in order to retrieve outlook emails, bookmarks, etc. The drive is 250 gigs. It only shows an 'N' drive, 130 gigs worth of data, which must have been a partition. The C drive isn't there. Is it corrupted? Will be I be able to retrieve anything from the C drive?  If the drive is corrupted, why does one partition show up and not the other?

Answer:Hard drive doesn't show C drive, but shows the other partition

I had a similar situation. I was able to get data off the drive using a Ubuntu live cd. Burn the iso to cd, put the drive back in the computer and boot to the cd. If you can see the drive in Places then you should be able to get your data off. Please note the "if" and "should".Good luck.

When working with outlook web app and attaching files some of the catalogues existing on the hard drive (and possible to access from say My Computer or Documents) don't show in the window poping up when clicking on attachment icon... Can anyone throw light on the issue???

Answer:Outlook web app doesn't show some of libraries when attaching files

This is a known issue,
Op1,
Click the Start button and click on your User name near the top of the page,
Click on Organize on the top left/ Folder and search options/ View section/ Scroll the list and check the box to Show hidden folders, files and drives/ Apply and Okay.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/56005-file-folder-hide-unhide.html
Op2,
Massive resetting of the hidden attributes can be done by right clicking the (my pictures...) listing, and select Properties,
General tab section, Check the Hidden box near the bottom, and click on Apply,
This will change all of the files to hidden, click on yes,
Then Uncheck the hidden box and Apply,
It will remove the hidden attribute from all of your files, click on yes,
Then Lastly click on Apply and Okay.

Op3,
Rename the effected folders.
Op4,
Uninstall ie10 see this,

Answer:Show hidden files and folders doesn't work

If you are comfortable with using the registry, you can check this setting.
Start> Run > type: regedit and hit OK.
Go to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Advanced
Click on the Advanced folder in the left pane and in the right panel, look for the value name Hidden.
The value data should be 1 = show hidden, 2 = do not show
If you make a change, you have to reboot for it to take effect.

I have a ASUS P4P800 Motherboard and I have updated my drivers. I will boot up the first time and my Memorex DVD Drive will show. If I reboot it just disappears. Any suggestions?

Answer:DVD Drive Doesn't Show

Can you relate the onset to the installation or removal of hardware or software?

Which drivers did you update?

Which version of Windows are you running? Which service pack?

Boot to safe mode. Does the drive appear? Reboot to safe mode. Does the drive appear?

Do you have a bootable CD / DVD? For example the installation disk for XP or Vista? Will your computer recognize the disk during the boot process?

Right, I've dug a very old PC out of the loft for two young kids to play with. It's at least ten years old, has 64MB RAM and has Windows ME installed. But when I put a CD in, it doesn't register. When I click on My Computer, all I get is three icons: 3.5 INCH FLOPPY, LOCAL DISC and CONTROL PANEL. Nothing regards the E: DRIVE.
Also, it has two USB jacks at the back, yet when I plug in a Memory Stick, it also fails to register. Any ideas?

Answer:PC doesn't show E: Drive

After ten years in the loft I would think the lens in the CD is probably filthy, Try cleaning it with an earbud moistened in antistatic fluid.

The memory sticks need to be formatted FAT32, not NTFS.

Hello there!
Few days ago I wanted to install some software from a CD. I inserted the disc and nothing happened.
Then I checked under My Computer and I saw that the DVD drive is missing from there. After that I checked Device Manager, didn't see a DVD drive under there either. I did some research, found a fix where I had do edit registry, deleting "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters" or something like that. I tried to do that, but when I found the key in registry, I didn't see those "filters". I haven't found any other fixes so I thought I'll ask for your help here. Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks!

Have you checked the cables and connectors? It could be something simple like a loose/faulty SATA cable.

Hi.

For a while now, I've been having problems with my DVD drive. It doesn't show up when I turn on my computer. Originally, I was able to solve my problem by going to the device manager and uninstalling it, but now it doesn't even show up there. What else... Um, I know that I don't have any virus/spyware stuff on my computer. If it helps, my computer is an HP Pavillion dv9000, I'm using Windows Vista. Can't remember what my DVD drive is exactly, but it's a Pioneer.

So yeah, I'm not good with computers, obviously. Any solutions?

Also, I think I read something about going to the registry editor and removing an "upper filter", or something like that. So I removed it. That might have led to more problems.

Thanks!

I recently stumbled upon saved searches in Windows 7, and while they're great, I can't seem to get newly added files to show up in the saved search results. An example:

I have 1 folder where I store EVERYTHING, no subfolders whatsoever. Inside this folder, I saved a search for "music". A few days later, I decided to add a new file with "music" in the title, but this new file doesn't appear in my saved search for "music". I tested this with a folder that had music in the title as well, but no luck.

According to Save a Search, these saved searches should show the most recent results, so I'm a little baffled.

Thanks in advance!

This is a strange problem and I was wondering if anyone has come across it or better still found a cure!I frequently transfer data, photos and videos via an ext hdd from my office PC to the Lenovo E540 at home. I noticed that when I plug the ext hdd via usb (doesn.t matter if I use usb 3.0 port or 2.0 port), my recently added files do not show on the Lenovo. It says the disk needs to be scanned and after scanning and repair, it may not may not show the files. I thought maybe the old ext hdd is corrupt (Toshiba) or faulty. SO I bought a new Samsung ext hdd. Same problem.Could it be a problem cos the Lenovo USB ports are live? Or need more power? I tried adjusting the power to USB via Power Mgt but no dice. Tried going to device manager - but nothing available to adjust there. So any insight into this problem would be most helpful.

I've just purchased a new SanDisk 240GB SSD drive to put in my wife's Dell laptop in place of the hard disk drive. I thought I would format / partition in on my Windows 10 PC first. I connected it via a SATA-USB adapter (that I know works as I used it with a HDD a couple of days ago), but nothing shows up on the 'This PC' window. When I first plugged it in (via the USB cable) there was a temporary icon in the Task Bar (as if Plug & Play was installing a driver) but this went half way through the scan it was performing.
Does this mean that the SanDisk SSD is duff? I already have a Samsung SSD in my PC (for the 'C:' drive) so unless there is something in Windows 10 that dis-allows two SSDs on the same PC, I suspect in might be duff!
I'd like to verify it before taking the HDD out of my wife's PC if at all possible. Ideas as to a solution / fool-proof check would be most welcome. Thanks.

So basically I have a 400 gb hard drive that has been working fine till yesterday.

I think it is a WD drive, it is internal.

I have to hard drives in my windows xp. The operating system is on the c drive but I added an internal drive to have more memory and use it mostly just for storage like music, movies etc. Yesterday I went to copy something from my desktop which is on the C drive into the F drive (this is the add-on drive that is not working properly) and it started copying but about half way through I got some errors and than the F drive disappeared from under my computer. I restarted the computer but I got an error stating that this is not drive plugged in to SATA 2, which was the location of the F drive. After a while passed I restarted the computer again but this time it would load without an error but once it gets past the windows booting screen the screen would go blank and nothing will happen.

I've ran the computers hard drive diagnostics and on the WD hard drive it just says fail but all the other drives and the cd-roms load fine.

The computer starts up fine with the F drive disconnected. Could it be that the F drive crashed and is lost?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's a possibility but if you haven't already, check the connections of the cables to make sure they aren't loose. If that doesn't do anything, try replacing the cable.

Hello!

I've been having a problem with my good old Xp computer.
Here is the spec for this computer:

Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20 GHz (2 CPUs)
Microsoft Windows Xp Professional (SP2)
2048 MB Ram
Ati Radeon X1300 series 512MB

Here is the problem: It has 2 synthoms, both started at the same time:
- Windows update, automatic or through website, won't work. Everytime I try to install an update, in gives me an error. Checking the windowsupdate.log, it says:
"FATAL: Error: 0x80004002: wuauclt handler: failed to spawn COM server"
- My other problem is that my dvd drive (I have 2 drives) shows up sometimes, but sometimes it doesn't. And as time goes on, it simply stops appearing. The other drive works fine, its a cd drive.
Now I tried to reinstall Windows, and the dvd drive started to appear again, but it slowsly starts dissapears sometimes (with this I mean, one day I turn it on and it's like that drive does not exist, maybe I reset the computer and it shows up again, but after some time it simply doesn't show at all... until I re-install windows).

So I installed windows XP from 0 (though didn't lost my files) and things worked well. After that, I had a motherboard change (previous motherboard was faulty in one of th... Read more

hello everyone ^^

i have a problem with my second hard drive. my main/master hdd is a MAXTOR STM380215AS ATA with windows 7 and my second/slave it's a ST3250319AS ATA 250GB (i think T.T) windows XP Professional
My second HDD it's newer then my maxtor(3-4 years) but the Seagate sometimes will not show on bios or anywhere else.this happened several times since i got it..
how i solved the problem till now ?... plunged and unplugged the drive and rebooted several times,,or tried to get it back by forcing the reinstallation of his windows(this worked ) but i cant use that now..i cant get him to show up to move my data( it's very important so i can't delete it) and i know that you can reinstall without deleting the data from a second partition but it's not my case cuz my data is in the windows partition ( it's not my idea lol i had to share the drive with my husband and i got the C: T.T)
anyway are there any other solutions beside to reformat it?
also i switched the cables between the 2 drivers ... didn't work

thank you for reading .

Tsuki.

Answer:Second Hard Drive doesn't show up in BIOS...(again)

Hello Tsuki have you tried looking in DISKPART to see if the drive is actually listed?

Click on the Strat button type in cmd > right click on that .exe at the top > run as admin> it will open with a black window let it settle for a few seconds then type DISKPART
then type LIST DISK hit enter and it should show you a list of the drives you have in the machine.

How much data do you have on the slave drive? and is it important?

Basically, i've just installed Windows 7 on my second hard drive, and its working fine... the only problem is that when i go to Computer it only shows the hard drive that im running Windows 7 on, and no the one that has Vista on it....

I woulodn't mind, but there are files and drivers on my Vista drive that i want on my Win7 one

If i boot into Vista i can see both drives, and can move files into the Win7 one. But occasionally i remember i want something, and i doon't want to have to reboot my pc twice just to get it....

Any ideas?

Thanks
Tim

This is a known bug. It has already been reported. You have to assign a drive letter to the drive/partition.

Running XP Home. I have an active Zip Plus drive that doesn't appear in the My Computer window. If I go to Control Panel >Manage >Computer Management >Disk Management, the drive is shown as 'Healhty (Active)'. When I R-click the drive icon and then Open in this window, the drive is activated and the disk is displayed. I can also get the drive to operate using WinKey. What would prevent it from appearing in the My Computer window. Thanks

Sorry for another one of these threads but I can't really seem to find the answer I need in any other thread. My specific situation is this:
My wife's PNY thumb drive suddenly stopped working. I know she's often just unplug it without the "Safe to Remove" prompt. Now the drive does not shoe up anywhere (disk mgmgt, my comp., etc)
When plugged in, the light comes on briefly, but then goes out. I can't even see it as a drive to format or try to run a recovery program.
Tried on several different PCs, OSs etc. Same thing each time.
My question is this: I am figuring that there is not much I can do. But a local shop told me they can extract the data for $100+. Can it really be done, or is all her data gone with the wind?

Answer:PNY attached thumb drive doesn't show up

Yes the pen drive is toast. Never depend on saving important data only on a flash drive. Back up the data to a CD or DVD. Flash drives are subject to static discharges like any electronic device. CD's and DVD's are not...

I think this is where this post should be.

I have seen a lot of these problems, but nobody really gives a good solution. When I plug in my camera or flash drive, my computer recognizes the device and shows that it is working fine. However, when I go to My Computer to open the file it isn't there. I can't attempt to change the drive letter in disk management, because the only thing there is my CD-ROM drive which is D:. I have tried changing the letter of that, but it doesn't matter, because my other drives aren't even showing up.

My camera and flash drive do show up in "Device" Manager and seem to be working fine.

Does anyone have any suggestions other than trying to change the drive letter, since there is nothing in disk management for the drive letter to be changed.

Answer:USB drive doesn't show up in Disk Management

Hi

What Windows version are you using?

Also do you have installed TweakUI which came as part of the Powertoys for XP or seperately? if you do then check the My Computer > Drives listing for any unchecked ones as TweakUI has the ability to hide drives from showing in My Computer.

This effect can also be caused by a number of tweaking applications so if you have any installed then check their menu options.

Also malware can be a cause for this (Vundo is one) and running the guide of ours here may fix this up, but if any Malware is found and this is not fixed with just the guide then do start a new thread in the malware area of our forum and attach the logs you gained while doing the guide.

i'm trying to install a dvd version of windows 7 on a dell dimension 3000 pentium 4 2.8 ghz. Just as the decision was made and the disk was put in the DVD drive and f12 is pushed to change the boot sequence, the only drive showing is my CD drive. what now?

Answer:dvd drive doesn't show in boot sequence

Your system's BIOS may only support one bootable optical drive. First try going into your BIOS set up and changing your boot order there so that the drive is bootable and first in boot order. if that is not possible, turn off, unplug your CD drive and try setting your boot order again. After Windows 7 is installed, you can always reinstall the drive and it's drivers as secondary to your DVD drive.NOTE: Did you do a Windows 7 compatibility test in the Windows 7 website? If not do it first. Note also that to install W7 over XP you will have to do a clean install (back up your files first or you will loose them). You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane. If all else fails, read instructions.

Hi I have a Samsung external hard drive that I've always used on my Mac with no problems until I was backing up a large amount of files, during which the wird got knocked and came out and now my hard drive isn't recognised anywhere on my Mac.

I've checked disk utility and everywhere else I can think of and it just does not show up.

Is it possible to get the photos back that hadn't been backed up?

Also if I need to go to a data recovery place where would be best to go? Thank you

I have been running XP PRO on the same custom PC for several years. One disk (IDE, secondary slave, 500GB) has 3 partitions; today win explorer will not display folders or files on the third partition (letter E, 270GB) of that drive. Other 2 partitions on same drive display properly and are accessible. I made a new test folder on E; it was accepted; but then it disappeared. I tried to make another new folder with same test name, it was rejected: ~"a folder by same already exists." Drive E is shown as "healthy" and its properties show drive 75% used, indicating data is still there. Attempts to copy folders/files from backup drive (fortunately copies of most data exist on another drive) give same response. Check disk dies in Phase 2: "Windows was unable to complete the disk check". I have searched net and not found any help. Is this a disk problem, OS problem, Windows explorer problem, or other problem? Are any obvious fixes available? Would a sector-by-sector clone to a new disk fix this? Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:win explorer doesn't show folders on drive

If check disk failed, the chances are the HDD is failing. Has too many bad sectors in the E: partition. You can download the ISO image for Drive Fitness in my signature and burn the image to CD using IMGBurn and boot off of the newly created CD and run the Quick and Advanced tests on the Drive. If there are any errors it can't fix, the drive will need to be replaced.

Hey All,

I have a Sony notebook for over a year now. Recently I noticed that 'MY COMPUTER' doesn't show CD/DVD symbol. When I went and checked device manager, I couldn't find the same. When I open up Nero or anyother software it says NO DRIVE DETECTED. CD/DVD drive opens up and closes without any problem. When I insert disc yellow light flashes but then it goes away (when drive was working fine, it used to show green light).

Can anyone please help? Greatly appreciated.....

Just replace an hdd that was still working fine with a larger drive. Ok, painful question here. What am I missing? 2 1/2 year old Dell crapped out, Hard drive failure of complete and utter magnitude. Ok, so had to get a new hard drive. Did so, installed it, but didn't have the OS CD that came with it, because it was one of those "never need to make a backup disk of your OS again" piece of cardboard that comes in the package. Should never have believed Dell.....what was I thinking.... anyway.. So, I found another windows xp os disc, put it in, got it loaded, got everything working. Of course, windows recognized that this was not an authorized version, as the os had been installed in another computer that was getting updates, yadda yadda. No sweat, needed to get me an update anyway, so decided I might just buy a leftover Vista Business complete (not an update) and start fresh. Well first, I hate Vista, but that's another story. Anyway, loaded Vista Business as a fresh install, works great. Rebooted it after the windows updated itself, and presto chango, the hard drive is not recognized at all, no way, no how. I've tried booting from cd, but it just doesn't matter if it can't read the hard drive. It keeps coming up with that issue. What did I do wrong?
Thanks in advance!

Answer:Hard drive doesn't show up in BIOS

The most common cause of a hard drive not showing is that the cable is loose. Disconnect the data cable and reconnect it, making sure that it is fully plugged in. Test.

You may, also, have disabled the drive controller(s) in the BIOS setup. Enter setup and select "Load Defaults", save and exit. Test again.

Answer:Portable Hard Drive doesn`t Show in My Computer

You should be able to give it a letter in disk manager? and then retain it...

I know sometimes that can be a problem with USB sticks not being seen in My computer, but after assigning them a letter in disk management they usually retain it when plugged in.

Continuation from this.

I've tried all steps but I can't seem to get to my hard drive.

Windows 7 Professional 64x.
Drivers Updated.
Plugged in properly.
Installed and uninstalled device driver.
Gave the drive a letter and changed the letter many times.
Hard drive is still working because I was just using it in my machine before I reinstalled Windows 7.
iomega case works fine because I used it with a 1tb drive last night.
Plugged it into many different USB ports and changed cables.

I've tried a lot of things to get this to work but I haven't been successful... It's nearly full and has all my work/software on it. When I plug it in to a USB port it installs it then disappears, even says that it installs successfully. You can see that it gets noticed in the device manager as: SPIF301 USB2SATA Bridge USB Device

If you can help in anyway at all, it will be much appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

I'm just checking out a used T41, 2373-4JU, and I do not see the CDRom Drive listed in my configuration list in BIOS.  Is this because the Drive is connected to the USB circuit? However, the drive appears in the sequence for booting devices (F12 button), where it is distinguished from other USB devices. I'm a novice, and would be thankful for any and all help from charitable souls. I have some other fears and ignorances about this computer.  I want to put my old HDD from a dead A20m into an adapter for the 2000 Bay and boot up from there, but I do not know if the W98SE on that old HDD will do some damage to the XP Pro system that is installed on the regular HDD of the computer.  Will the two harddrives be kept completely apart?

Answer:Configuration in BIOS doesn't show CDRom Drive

Welcome to the forum! First of all, UltraBay 2000 HDD adapter will not work in a T4x unit, you need a ultrabay slim adapter. Once you've located that, you'll be able to access your W98SE on the hard drive. I don't quite understand the issue with CD-ROM/BIOS/USB...what type of CD-ROM are you using, and where are you not seeing it? Good luck and let us know.

I purchased a 500 GB drive about a year and a half ago to hold my backups for my main 160 GB drive. Just about everytime I have to reboot my PC, the 500 GB does not show in Computer. I them boot again and it shows and everything is fine. I have attempted to sort this out but no luck yet. Today I had to reboot and the 500 GB did not show. I have rebooted about four times but nothing. I went into the Bios and did not see anything strange. The 500 shows up as it should. The only unusual thing I see in the setup is that my main drive with the C and D partitions is listed as drive 1 while the 500 GB with my backups is listed as drive 0. I believe the reverse is the preferred but don't know if it really matters. Here is my Disk Management and a prompt that says I must initialize it. The two partitions on the 500 GB are primary if that makes a difference and the prompt refers to Logical. Any help is appreciated as to why the 500 GB is not showing. Thanks, == I just found out how to initialize the disk, but it looks like I will lose my backups. Not a big deal, but I want this to not occur again. Does it sound like a bad disk that might be causing this?

Answer:Hard Drive Doesn't Show in Disk Management

Normally, one would expect to see the Windows drive on Sata 0, but I don't think it really matters that it's not.

Initializing the drive means it's asking for it to be partitioned and formatted, but the puzzling thing is why did it lose its partition in the first place?

Was the partition on Drive 0 a logical partition?

I'm off to do some investigating.

I'm back, you may find this of use: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc771775.aspx

Hi there

3 Linux servers with different distros seem to be unable to read the C drive directory properly on a new Windows 10041 (Real) machine.

Seems to be NO problem in accessing the other shared drives on the computer. This problem only seems to be when SAMBA wants to access the computer (Windows to Windows works OK even a windows 10 VM on the Linux HOST to a real W10 machine).

Cheers
jimbo

Answer:Build 10041 Samba doesn't show C drive properly !!!!

It could be a SAMBA issue.

The Linux Mint 17.1 install on my laptop does something similar.
I have 12 shared folders (NTFS) on my Windows 7 desktop.

The only shared folder the laptop can see is the one with "read and write" set on it.
The other 11 "read only" folders do not appear in the file browser.

My friend's Arch Linux system can see and access all the folders (with the correct restrictions).

Luckily I can use the W7 install on the laptop to transfer files to my W7 install on my desktop (or vice versa).

I have no idea what is happening and I can't even come up with a plausible hypothesis.

I recently purchased a Seagate Backup Plus 3TB hard drive with USB 3.0 connector. After it was done I went to My Computer, but the hard drive does not show up.

I checked device manager, and it does show the drive there. When I clicked properties and tried populating the "volumes" section, a 2.8tb section did show up, but had no label, but i don't know the significance of that. Any help with this is appreciated, thanks in advance.

The only sure way I've found on getting it to appear in Window Explorer is to leave it switched on and to re-start my PC.
Does anyone know how to jolt it into appearing in Windows Explorer without having to re-start my PC.
(The external hd is a WD MyBook 3Tb USB3 unit & my USB sockets are USB3. I'm running Windows 8.1)

I'm formatting a hardware raid5 drive using the drive management mmc snap-in, and it's taking forever. What is making matters worse is that it doesn't show the percentage completed, it just says "ntfs, formatting" on the screen.

Is there a command line or other tool to show me how far along the formatting is as a percentage? like 2% complete, 50% complete, and so on.

Answer:Hard Drive says formatting - doesn't show percentage completed

Not that I know of, but if you are doing a so called "full format", it can take 3 hours or so on a 1 TB drive, if I recall correctly.

I tried to partition my OCZ rally2 16gb into a 12.9...gb NFTS and a 1.2...gb fat32 using Acronis disk director.

It started off as a 14.9gb NFTS (I don't have anything important on it and I RARed all data to my computer prior, so i'm safe to format it) before I tried to split a 1.25 gb chunk off. I got about 10% through before I got an "invalid format error" as shown in my logs. I retried a couple times, then skiped hoping it would still work. I got more errors and just canceled it after the first four.

Acronis showed it as two partitions, but the sizes were not as they should have been if the operation finished successfully. HPUSB format utility showed the drive as a single full sized drive. The original 14.9gb drive showed up, but said 0 bytes free, 0 bytes used and 0 bytes total. I did not check the contents, but the custom icon was still there so I assume my data was fine.

I reemerged the partitions successfully and both Acronis and HPUSB format show it as a single 14.9gb drive, with the correct amount of free space. The only problem is I can not see it on my computer. I rebooted and changed the name with acronis, but it still doesn't show. It shows up under device manager as a USB storage device. I've run the USB drive cleaner already, still not showing up.

I can still boot off my flash drive though, so I think it is still fine.

I have two drives, Win98se on C and Winxpsp3 on D. D is default boot. I also have a USB2 mass storage drive, 400gb hard drive. It is connected to my PC through a 5.25" USB enclosure.

I had some problems with my PC lately and have had my external drive had to be replaced. I kept the same enclosure. While this was going on this desktop pc was off and not being used. I have been using my laptop for the last couple of weeks. The original and the replacement were both 400gb Seagate IDE's. I think they're slightly different models. I reconnected my usb mass storage drive and now it doesn't want to show up.

Its configured properly as a Master. Before the drive was replaced everything was fine.

It is configures as a master properly. When I plug it in it shows up as seeing something but is unable to complete the install.

Is this something that will eventually fix itself or do I need a new USB enclosure or is something else wrong, like in the Device Manager or something? I can't connect it to my laptop either, same problem. It starts to recognize something but doesn't want to complete the install.

Answer:External USB2 mass Storage Drive Doesn't Want to show up

I've had this problem a few times. Usually, when you have a USB Mass Storage Device somewhere, you absolutely have to "Safely Remove Hardware" - because even Linux won't read a drive that hasn't been "Safely" removed from a Windows system. You should do this even if you're leaving it attached when shutting down.

Now, here's what I had to do...No guarantees, and it may take several times to get it to go properly from that point forward.

While the unfinished detection of the drive is listed in Device Manager...
Uninstall any and all USB devices relating to it. Mine was "WDC WD15EADS-xxxxxx USB Device" This includes also anything relating to "USB Device" under the Disk Drives in the DM, as well as under "USB Serial Bus Controllers" USB Mass Storage Controller is another thing to look for.

Refresh the Device manager WHILE the drive is still connected. Uninstall them all over again, disconnect the drive, reboot, wait till Windows loads back up again, and reattach it.

After about 3 times doing that, it finally started working. That's how I got MINE to work. Hopefully someone else has a better battle plan, but this is what did it for me.

Hi I have a 1TB external USB hard drive, it is not showing up in 'my computer' the light on the hard drive is constantly flashing and randomly beeps and clicks, I have never heard this until today..
I have tried it on two laptops, windows 7 and windows 10 and in a macbook, does not show up.
I have tried a different cable from another USB device, still no luck.
It appears in device manager which says it is running normally, I have tried un-installing and re-installing, no luck! In disk manager it says the disk is unknown and not initialised, see screenshot.
Please help me recover my device, it has a lot of data on it that I don't want to lose! I hope it is still there!

I've a Lenovo J115 738726u which is installed Windows XP. I installed a secondary SATA hard drive (Western Digital WDBAAX3200ENC-NRSN). The new installed HDD is not shown up as hard disk in file explorer. But In control panel->system->device manager, I'm able to see the new hard disk in the 'Disk Drive'. Does anyone has idea what's required to solve the problem? Thanks a lot.

Answer:secondary SATA hard drive doesn't show up in J115

Good day and welcome to the community.

If I'm not mistaken, you'll need to create a partition on the drive before Windows Explorer will see it. You can create a partition from within Disk Management. Right-click My Computer and select Manage from the pop-up.

Hope this helps.

I have a 2,5" 500GB external hard-drive with a single partition (NTFS).
I can see it in the disk management utility (see attached screenshot) but it doesn't have a drive letter nor can't I assign one.

Attached to another PC running Windows XP it says "unknown partition" but also error-free and NTFS.

The problem could have been triggered by unplugging the harddrive without securely removing it.

Answer:Doesn't show external drive anymore but visible in the disk management

is it have files on that external hdd??

on Disk Mgmt, right click the offending disk.
Select Change drive letters and path.

Hello

My power went out and when I restarted my computer, I could not get my Windows XP started. Tried safe mode, everything else, failed. Tried to start the repair install thing before backing up my data on the partition on which Windows are installed.

Now, I DID NOT start the Windows installation process.(Nothing deleted or added)

Because when I reached the part when it is supposed to show the already installed Windows versions, there was nothing there. All it showed was the partition where Windows was installed. My other partition's file system shows as NTFS, while that of this one shows Unknown and has totally free space. It is not supposed to be like this, so any help?

I did not proceed of course with the same partition and took it out of my PC. I also DID NOT format or partition it. Could Windows format it on its own when only starting the Windows XP setup booted from CD. I don't think so.

My questions are these.

Why does it appear like that when the Windows at least tries to start though doesn't run successfully.
I did not format or partition my hard drive, why is it appearing like this?
Would I be able to recover my data, even if the partition has become raw due to some virus or malware by using file recovery software such as Recuva?
Will I be able to access the data if I connect my HDD as a secondary disc to some other computer?
Will I be able to access my data without formatting it when using it as a secondary disc

Answer:Windows XP Repair doesn't show Already Installed OS + Drive Seems Formatted + Anxious About Data

The first thing I would suggest doing is to make an image of the seemingly empty partition to another drive. Then you can use TestDisk (it's free open source) to see if it can recover or repair the partition table on the image. If it can, great, if not, we can try recovering the data on the disk using Recuva, TestDisk or PhotoRec (all free).

Once we have a proper solution (and your drive seems to be physically healthy), we can apply the solution to the actual drive. This way we always have a good copy handy in addition to the one we are working on that may go bad.

If you'd like to try this, let me know if you have an external drive with at least 100GB of space on it (your partition is 98GB so it could be that big) or if you will be doing this by placing the drive in another machine that also has a separate disk with room on it for the image. I do not like to use the other partition on the same disk because we want to be as gentle as possible in case it is a problem with the drive itself.

You will need to be able to burn a CD and boot from it for the imaging tool that I prefer (free also) and it may take a few hours to make the image.

Let me know if you'd like to proceed with this and I can help you tomorrow (it is 1AM where I am now). From what you have said so far it sounds like we should be able to get the data.

Hi,I understand that you need help in order to get rid of the malware that is present on your system - But you need to help us first..I notice that you never scanned with an Antivirus previously before starting this thread - because you don't even have an Antivirus installed! This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world. That's why I want you to install one first!!* Please install Avira Antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/This is a free Antivirus.Perform a full scan with Avira and let it delete everything it is finding. Then reboot. After reboot, open your Avira and select "reports".There doubleclick the report from the Full scan you have done. Click the "Report File" button and copy and paste this report in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog. Then we'll start from there, because it really makes no sense otherwise that we clean this up manually if an Antivirusscan is not present which should be able to deal with most and prevent further reinfection.

Lately I can't find my files in Google Drive. I will create a document or folder, put it in GD, but when I search for it it's not there (either from my home computer I just used, or from a remote location.) Yet if I try to resend something to GD, it will tell me "This file is already here."
I can't figure this out.....it happens with IE and also with Google Chrome.

Hey Guys, I cannot find a soultion to this problem. I was using my desktop like normal then an error came up saying that there was a hdd failure, and that i needed to scan for errors. all my files disappeared and only this error would come up. There would be hundreds of the same msg spamed on my screen. I scaned my hdd for errors using my Bios/Advanced options and no errors came up. I decided to take out the hdd and put it into my External Hdd bay to hook up to my laptop to extract the data off it.

When i hooked it up to my laptop it showed up empty. I went into folder options and clicked on show hidden files and folders. Everything came up but it was grey/transparent. I then copied the files to another hdd for backup.

Then i formatted the hdd and put on a fresh new OS. Id like to mention i have a second internal drive that i use for backups but it wasnt backed up recently when this issue happen so i had to take out the main drive and use it as an external to back up onto another external drive.

so then when i click on my second internal drive after the reinstall of the new OS it shows empty i have to go in and show hidden files and folders.. now they show again transparent. also i plug in my external to get the recent back up and all those files are still transparent when i move them to my desktop that is freshly OS installed they are still grey/transparent and i have to keep the show hidden files and folders to view them.. so its all my music, pics, documents etc th... Hello everyone, I am very new to this entire environment. I am hoping that someone can help me. My friend gave me a thumb drive to upload some movies on it. However, when I plugged it into my computer it opened automatically into VLC Media. When I right click on the thumb drive and click open, it only shows me the videos on the drive. When I open the VLC playlist, the entire contents of the thumb drive are shown. There are even some docx files showing up as well. How do I get back to having Windows open the thumb drive entirely. BTW....I saved the entire thumb drive onto my desktop and played with it as well. I still had no luck getting Windows to open it. It says there are only 7 files when I use Windows. 123 files show up in VLC Media. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Answer:Thumb Drive will not show all files with Windows

Open 7zip archiver (if you don't have it, download it and install it)
navigate to that USB Drive and it will show you all the files in it

Hello everyone

I have a bunch of files and folders sitting on my Desktop so that I can get to them easily and so that I don't forget about them. I tend to forget about stuff if the icons aren't visible, and these files relate to important tasks that I should not forget. However, ideally (e.g. for backup purposes) these files should not be on the C: drive, on the Desktop, but in a single parent folder on the D: drive. So, I want to see the icons on the Desktop as if the files are there on the Desktop, but I don't want the files to be actually on the Desktop. What solutions can you think of?

In Windows XP, I would simply drag their parent folder to the edge of the Desktop, and Windows would then create a toolbar that shows all the files and folders. However, Windows 7 dropped this feature. I also know that one can create a toolbar on the Windows 7 taskbar, but my taskbar is already full (despite being three icons deep and situated along the longest edge of my portrait screen), and there's no room for yet another toolbar on it.

I don't want to simply create shortcuts to all the files because then I would have to remember to create new shortcuts for new files, and I'm prone to forget. Simply using shortcuts would also make it difficult to move new files to that location (I'd have to move the file to the D: drive folder manually and then remember to create a shortcut to it to the Desktop again).

I was wondering if there was a way to "stick" an open fol... Read more

It would appear that the "Folder Portals" feature of StarDoc Fences is a partial solution, if you don't use the Classic theme (which I use).

Nimi Places actually gets closer to it (tis a pity Nimi Places use icons and lettering that is different from what the user uses elsewhere on his desktop).

Hi, my PC is having some problems which seem similar to quite many people's cases I have read.

It does not show USB thumbdrive in my computer though windows detects a USB plugged in.

It does not show hidden files and folders as I select the show hidden files option.

It also opens a new window whenever I click one of my 2 local disks though I have selected open each folder in the same window. I searched the solution for this "opening in a new window" problem and I got an instruction to run regedit and delete all "mountpoints2" found in the computer. So I have to repeat this activity everytime I turn on my computer.

Please give me an instruction to clean my infected PC.

Thank you before hand.

Have two hard drives in my desktop computer (Win XP Pro). One drive stores my program files (i.e., primary drive)while the other (i.e., primary slave drive)mainly stores my different document file folders (i.e., office files, pictures, music, etc.). Recently, upon computer start up, both drives were recognized during boot-up. The device manager similarly identifies both drives as Ok (i.e., does not show any problem). However, when i try to open my files (e.g., word, excel, etc) from my primary slave drive it does not show any of my files. Same is true when using windows explorer.

I have a western digital 250 gig serial ata, and the other day I accidently screwed up the winlogon.exe system file so it was no longer accessable. I decided it was time to buy a new hard drive (maxtor)to have more space and so that I wouldnt have to format the wetsern digital and do a fresh install, this way I could just set the WD as a slave and transfer the files over to my Mator. I install the maxtor as the master and then install windows 2k on it. I then try goiong into my computer so I can start trasnfering my files, and the old hard drive shows up (Western Digital), however, the hard drive shows as 0 bytes, as used and capacity. The hard drive deffinately is not empty and has a cxpacity of 250 GIGS. What could be causing this, I really dont want to format my hard drive, thats the whole reason I bought the second one. Could this be like this because the old HD was installed with xp and the new one has 2000 on it?
