I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Question: Deskstar 250Gb Hdd

I just bought a new deskstar 250Gb Hdd which I am trying to install in my Compaq Pressario S3190UK

I know its got to be set to slave but I wasnt sure if I should set it up as a
16 head, a 15 head , 32 byte clip or auto spin dissable and all of those choises are available on the drive

I went for 16 heads and booted up

In " my computer " the new drive does not appear ( I still see all my original drives there) yet in System/Hardware /device manager it shows up under drives and on clicking its properties it says this device is working properly

Without seeing it in the " my computer folder " I cant really format or partition it so I then tried partition magic
That saw it fine and reported its size correctly . I told it to create an ntfs partition and use all the drive . It changed color as it should and all that was left was to click on make changes now but when I did that it went straight back to tell me the new drive had no partitions created

I tried various combinations, of primary or logical drive , small or large partitions and fat or ntfs but always it refuses the last step of actually creating the partition .
What am I doing wrong ?

Answer:Deskstar 250Gb Hdd

First I will assume your drive is showing up as the full size in the bios and is corrrectly identified.

If you are using either xp or win2k. Go to disk management; start>run type in diskmgmt.msc and hit enter. See if your drive shows up there; it should be listed as disk1, disk0 will be the master drive. If it shows up there, you need to partition and format the drive. Right click on the drive and choose to create a partition; I like extended partitions for data / storage drives. After you create the partition, right click again and choose to create logical drive. You can make the entire drive one partition or organize it into say 3 logical drives; whatever you want. After you create the logical drive you will need to format them. Again right click on the logical drive and choose format. Use ntfs for your drive. In fact if you use partitions greater than 32 gig, fat32 is not even an option.

Just think about how you want it organized before you start.

I bought a hitachi deskstar 250GB HD to use as a slave backup drive. I installed it and it is only showing up as 96 GB. What is the deal?

Answer:hitachi deskstar 250GB only reading 96GB?

Which OS are you using? What program did you use to partition and format the drive (such as FDISK, or a third-party program)? How old is your system? If the BIOS is outdated, it might not recognize the entire harddrive...

Post your answers, and we'll work forward from there...

Hi all,

I’m just after some advice. I recently had My 30gb IBM Deskstar (er, I mean Deathstar) die on me. Basically it is the common problem of the read heads slapping against the inside of the disk case, making it all but useless.

Now, I took it to a pc doctor who managed to recover some of the data. He said that it is possible to get it all back myself, it will just take a very long time (1 gig per 24 hours to be exact.) using R-Studio.

I’ve since tried using R-studio, but if I try to access the disk in any way my whole computer just locks up. I was just wondering if anyone has any advice on how to properly use R-studio in this situation. Or should I just give up now and use the disk as a doorstop?

On switching the computer on it doesn't detect any hdd. Does the 120gb have to be set as master or is it a problem with the bios because of the new hdd size. Can anyone help please.

Hi i am new to the forums so if this problem has already been mention please guide me to it thanks. The problem i have started of after my windows XP Pro SP2 crashed and so i had to restart the pc after the restart i got the usually screen you get if windows was not shut properly you get the 3 modes of safe and the last good configuration and the time counting down as soon as i choose any of the 4 options the time freeze and the no further progress is made to load up the windows.I then tried to put the hard drive in a external cabby and tried it on a shuttle and laptop, the hard drive was picked up but would not be able to access it and the speed was very slow in accessing the hard disk.I was wondering if anyone knows how i can recover the hard disk to get access to my files.I read around and seem like the drive may be dead but i think seem to be a problem of some sort as them shuttle and laptop pick up the hard disk though take very long to get the drive visible in My Computer. Please help me with any information on recovering the files and hopefully dont get the bad news of my HD being dead. Thanks in advance :suspiciou

Answer:IBM Deskstar Hard Drive Problem

Did you unplug your HDD when you are at the "last good config" screen?? By the way you said it, it sounds like that's what you did. Anyway, have you tried access the HDD as a slave drive on another tower?? Instead of using a shuttle and laptop??

I am trying to use an older Hitachi/DeskStar Model IBM-DTLA-307030 in a Dell machine. With Fdisk, I can remove all the partitions, but when I select "use all drive for primary partition" I only get 2042 megs. (Yes I enable large disk support first!). I then removed the primary partition both with and then without large disk support utilized, but it makes no difference. I get 2 gigs usable out of a thirty gig drive. I can't even use the remauining drive for an extended partition. It is like a 2 gig drive! I know it used to work as a thirty, and it is clearly labeled a 30.I have used all of the Hitachi/IBM tools that show no need fopr a firmware update, it tests out fine with the diagnostics and it shows it as a 30 gig drive. None of the "DeathStar" clicking noises as many have reported as these drives fail. But I am stumped!! All help appreciated. No Spyware/Adware or Virus. I use Linspire on my other computer!. Ask me about it.

Question: 250gb hd problem

Hitachi 250gb hd, was working fine, everything was ok. It was split into two partitions a 128Gb clip, and a 104 gb clip. The 128gb clip had information on it. Now the drive is recognized in bios properly. When it boots to windows it comes up as 8gb, and has information on it, but I can't access it. One more thing the drive now says fat, when originialy it was ntfs. Under manager, The drive says it is split at 138g and 104 gb. Any ideas? when I run a drive test the drive says it has a bad cable, I swapped the cable out three or four times, to no avail.

I think I have it all listed, oh windows xp home, installed on it's own drive.

Answer:250gb hd problem

Has nothing to do with drivers or Spyware, it is more of a Bios issue. What is the manufacturer and model of the computer that this drive is in? Also, do you have SP2 installed for XP?

I just bought a maxtor DiamondMax10 250GB HDD...
and i bought an external case so i can use it on my laptop(toshiba A-50)..

I have used a 400GB external Drive on the same laptop before..
I have also used 200GB external drive before on the same laptop..
all of my previous hdd were western digital....

The problem is:
I wanted to format (partition) the hdd... but the computer said that the capacity (unformatted) is around 2 TB
i tried to format it as one partition, it wont do it...
I tried to minimize the capacity to an acceptable (close to real) level (set it to 230Gb) but it wont do it...

I tried to format it using FAT32, and it worked but to a maximum of 200Gb, it is ok... but the problem is that i can only use 10 GB after that the harddrive gives an error (write-protected)...

1- have anyone used Maxtor drives before as externals???
2- Have any one came across this problem before ???
3- Will it work in a normal PC or not?? (just to format it)... because getting a pc in here is quite difficult

Thanks in advance....

I used the windows XP disk managment tool...
and i used also Partition Magic 8.0....
all with the same results...

How is the drive formatted ? ?NTFS/FAT32 ?2 things you can check: First in device manager find the IDE controller and then the drive andd right clik it and select Properties...Report back what mode it is in. If it's PIO mode this will account for the extreme slowness.2nd DLoad and run Seatools diagnostics on that drive to determine if it's healthy or not.The file is used to create a bootable floppy/CD so you can run it even if Windows won't run.Report back with your findings...

I have a DELL Dimension 4700 Desktop, 250 GB Western Digital HDD w/1GB Dim.
It was running and now and then shut down and sometimes re-boot.
I tested the PSU and had no -5V output so replaced the PSU with same model.
I Ghost wipe my HDD and found I had a bad sector when i tested it.
Replaced with a new WD 250G HDD
I have for several days been trying to load Windows XP PRO (OEM.ISO & just .ISO).
The load will get into the 34 MIN Installation and dye (black screen).
It will keep booting to the hit to boot from CD and want's to start the load again.
Several times i have received the no NTLDR found, so go into Repair and copy it from the D:\ back to the C:\, several times have also gotten the Invalid boot .INI file.
Have also received the C:\windows\inf\machine.inf. Checked DOS dir and found no faulty .inf file to delete.
I am retesting the new HDD and it seems to be ok.
I am starting to lean towards passably a bad MoBo.
ANY IDEAS out there?

Hey there,

I recently picked up a Seagate 250 GB SATA HDD (model number: ST3250824AS). When I installed it, I did as I was exactly told. I disconnected the power and turned of the system, plugged the SATA cable from the HDD to the motherboard (I have an ASUS P4P800 motherboard), hooked up the power cable from the power supply to the HDD and closed the case up. When I powered up the system, Windows (I'm using XP Professional) recognized the HDD and added it to the device manager... but the problem is; its there is no icon displayed in My Computer. I dont know what to make of it. Could it be something with Windows? Any feed back would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello, I've recently done a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and one of my harddrives is not showing up correctly. The harddrive itself is my Local Disk D, it hasn't got any system files on it however it is displaying at the wrong size:

The problem lies in the fact that on boot my Computer's BIOS detects the harddrive as a 233GB harddrive. This is not a problem as I understand that the harddrive itself isn't the exact size as what it says on the box, however the Windows 7 installation and Windows itself only detects the harddrive as being 148gb.

What I've Tried Doing:
I've tried different things to resolve this issue. I've looked at the Disk Management, but there are no extra partitions and I've also looked at the harddrive in Partition Manager which again only picked up 149gb and no unallocated space.
I've run a partition recovery tool in Partition Manager which did not detect any lost partitions containing the rest of the harddrive.

Answer:IDE Maxtor 250gb Hard drive Problem.

Hello samboyd93. Welcome to the forum.

The only thing I can think of is that the drive is set as a SATA2 drive on an older computer that only does SATA1 (please fill in your "My System Specs" to help avoid these kinds of guesses) although I doubt it.

If you look at the back of the HDD there are jumper pins. Setting a jumper sets the SATA speed on most drives. You may need to consult the HDD's documentation to see what the different jumper positions do. Every manufacturer has a different setup.

I would try setting the drive as SATA1 to test. But both drives should be at the same setting. Also try plugging the problem drive into a different port or using a different SATA cable. Can't hurt, might help.

You should also go into your BIOS and check the settings for that drive and compare them to the settings for the other drive. They should be the same.

Hope that helps.

Question: Deskstar failures

Hi, I have 2 123GB deskstars, one from IBM and other from Hitachi, both have failed in the last week. The IBM one cannot be seen by anything it powers on and that is about all. The Hitachi is curently running on HDD regenerator and has taken 24hrs to do 14MB with what I think is about a 10% bad sector rate. Is this a co-incidence or a sign of something more sinsiter?

Should I assume these disks are dead completely? Is there anything I can do to get my data back, one of them has my whole record collection about 15GB, with no backup for the last year. Doh!

This has also led onto a SATA disk not booting, so do I have a virus problem? How do I get round this when I manage to get it to boot again?

Should I buy a new disk and rebuild and then try recovery?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

How can I tell if this 60gig IBM Deskstar is 15 heads or 16 heads???

There are dual jumper settings listed for each. I recently removed this drive in hopes of tranferring the whole image to another harddrive in my Gateway PC via hi-speed 2.0 USB cable. Well that failed as the USB connection kept getting improperly installed & all the while the IBM kept spinning.

Next I decided to just put the drive back in its orginal pc as master and then the drive failed to be seen again & was spinning.

I can't get it to be recognized as a slave either...not seen in the BIOS either
error msg says:
" media failure, check cable"

I have seen a reference in the forum to 15gig IBM suggesting both drives could be set to CS....

Any advice would be appreciated

I used an IBM Deskstar drive in a machine that I built but found that after a while there was a problem with it. Most of the time it worked fine but evry so often it would "disappear". The disappearance was first noticed in Windows when a bit of fiddling with "Add Device" would usually get it back but subsequently was noticed in BIOS when the BIOS failed to Auto Detect the drive.

The drive is obviously not that useful but I would like to be able to recover the data on it.

I was thinking of trying to set the drive as USER and set CYLINDERS=16383, HEADS=16, SECTORS=63 with LBA=ON or LBA=Off but thought it worth asking the gurus whether this could reasonably be expected to work or whether there was something else to try.

Any advice and guidance welcome.

Roger Bowen

Answer:Fixing IBM Deskstar Drives

First thing with all DeskStar drives - update the notorious firmware they originally came with.

Swiching between LBA/CHS mode will not help you in any way.

Try swapping out the IDE cable and running the drive on another IDE controller.

Run the drive diagnostics tool supplied by Hitatchi nowadays. Don't let it do the "drive erase" thing if it wants to.

I have these drives backed up about 95% but there is some data I would like off the drive.

Since the ?C? Drive system registry is corrupted I removed it and replaced it with a Maxtor 40G Drive. I next tried to connect the old IBM ?C? drive up as a slave in an attempt to recover some data from it.

I?m having tremendous problem getting the system to recognize either of these two drive as a slave drive.

Answer:IBM Deskstar as Slave Drive

Use Partition Magic to convert the "active" partition on your IBM HD.
Keep the Maxtor as you Master and set the IBM to CS.

In Partition Magic click on Disk 2 (=IBM) and select the partition that (on the right) says "Status Active". Now rightclick it, select Convert and then Logical Partition.
When PM is done, you should get a drive-letter for your IBM-partition and you can remove the data.

I bought a 250Gb version of the SATA2 Deskstar for my nephews newq build PC.Everything loaded etc. The last action was to upgrade the drive to SATA2 (300) as they are sold in the SATA150 state and you have to use a piece of software to upgrade it.I duly followed the instructions from the Hitachi site and started the process. Part way through the I eperienced an error. Every tine I tried the same error came up. After the weekend I called Hitachi only to be told that the piece of software (feature tool) wasnt compactable with my motherboard, an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe. I cannot belive that Hitachi havent included one of the few mainstreme mobos. There answer was to find someone with a capatable board and ask them to upgrade the drive. Why the hell do they persist in selling this drive in the 150 mode and not the mode it is designed for. Where do I know stand buying something I wanted but didnt get?MY ADVICE, STAY CLEAR OF THIS DRIVE. Buy one of the other makes that are available. Is there anyone in the Dagenham area that could help out to upgrade the drive to SATA 300?

I recently picked up a Hitachi Deskstar 40 gig HDD. rolleyes When I installed it in an external case, it only showed 10 gig so I put it in another machine and started the windows XP installation from a CD. (Original not a copy). I found that there was a 10 gig partition that was formatted and a 30 gig partition that wasn't formatted, (approximate sizes). I deleted both partitions and tried to partition it as a 40 gig drive. It wouldn't do it. I had to use 2 partitions and format each of them to get it to work. I now have a 9.77 GB NTFS (healthy, Active) drive and a 27.49 GB NTFS (Healthy) drive. Would there be a way to reset the partition back to a 40 GB HDD single Partition? Got an interesting one here. A few weeks ago my Hitachi Deskstar 120GB HDD starting clicking . I am unable to recover my data as it just sits there and clicks and when I reboot my system, it sits at IDE drive detection... I removed the hard drive and opened the cover and noticed that the head is clicking against the platter. I tried readjusting it with no luck. I was very careful to NOT touch the platters as I know that can corrupt data. So, I ordered the exact same model hard drive on eBay, (hasn't gotten here yet), but heres my question. Will I be able to replace the head and the board on the outside of the drive and if the drive actually starts, will it see my data? I was also thinking about switching the platters but I do not want to mess up the alignment of the platters. Mass sector confusion ! Whats the best way to recover my data? Also on the broken drive, the tiny ribbon cable that goes from the board of the drive to the head is torn and there is no way I can solder them back together.

Answer:Hitachi Deskstar 120GB HDD issue

Working on hard drives is a lot like brain surgery. If the read/write head is actually touching the platters, or if you adjusted it's location (ie: adjusted a set screw) your data is most likely toast. If you didn't do that, replacing the circuit board with one from an exact same drive may work. As for the ribbon cable, you could get another one or solder tiny wires in place of the broken circuit traces.

Can anyone advise me about the differences between the Hitachi Deskstar and Cinemastar
internal hard drives.

I am seeking a Deskstar P7K500 500GB PATA (IDE) Ultra DMA 133 but everyone is sold out.
I have found a Cinemastar 500GB model but those are not specifically designed for desktop use.

Have also found a Deskstar 320GB PATA which I may have to settle for instead.

Currently have a T7K250 160GB PATA-133 installed as original equipment.
The new drive will be used as a second drive for backup.
Everest shows Max UDMA transfer mode and Active UDMA transfer mode both as UDMA 6 (ATA-133)

Can provide info links to PDF docs if necessary.

I am hoping to get some answers or information in regards to this hard drive.

I am just recently bought a new system and while installing Windows 7 Ultimate x64, I noticed that the hard drive was only using 2tb's of space. After some checking I found out the window's will only be able to use 2tb's unless I use the Hitachi's disk management tool to open the additional 1tb.

Now the problem I am having is that the tool notes I need to convert the drive from MBR Disk to GPT Disk. I was found several ways of doing this but none give me any information on how to do this if the drive itself is the primary boot drive for the PC.

Unfortunately I don't have another hard drive or PC to throw the new one in just for the time being (I am assuming that this is one way to resolve this).

Basically it doesn't let me convert the hard drive to GPT unless it is empty (again, I am assuming the OS needs to be gone as well).

Any help or suggestions in this situation would be awesome.

Answer:Hitachi Deskstar 7k3000 3tb drive.....

I've never used a drive that large, but it leads to issues:

Above 2TB

Short version: drives larger than 2TB must use GPT. Windows 7 can only boot from a GPT drive if you have a 64 bit version (as you do), and your motherboard uses uEFI rather than a traditional BIOS.

Some 3TB drives I've seen sold with controller cards that may allow these limitations to be worked around, but I've not used one.

I don't know how this affects the Win7 installation process.

If you have an Asus motherboard, you may wish to try their Disk Unlocker:

I have an old PC here that I am trying to wipe clean and reinstall Windows XP onto. Before I can do this, however, I need the driver for the old HDD that's been installed. It's a Hitachi Deskstar 7k250 part# hds722580vlsa80. I have been searching all day and I can't find one anywhere. I realize that it's dated technology, but I am hoping someone can help.

Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

Answer:Hitachi Deskstar 7k250. I need the driver

You're looking for the wrong driver, sort of. You really want the motherboard SATA controller driver. When installing XP onto a SATA hard drive, you need to install the SATA/RAID driver at the F6 prompt at the beginning of Windows Setup but you need a floppy drive for this. If you don't have a floppy, you can make a slipstream CD with the SATA driver included. There are plenty of guides on the internet on how to make them.

I've got a Deskstar 60G HD IDE, (ex Ebay) however upon receiving it I have found that 2 of the 4 PCB screws are missing and the Drive is not working. It was advertised as not working but I thought it might have been a fdisk problem and so I got it, not knowing the top had also been removed.
Siiiiiii such is life.

I am now working on the assumption that if the PCB is faulty, then if I can replace it with another, I just might get it up and going.

Would anyone out there in internet land have a PCB off a known drive or know how or where I might get my HD working again?

I sent it to IBM in Australia, but they returned to me, package unopened, not being prepared to offer me any help.

So this is a last ditch attempt to get some help.

Personally, I'd consider this a valuable lesson and not put any more money into this endevor. It's quite likely that the HDA is defective, and you've be putting more money into a losing cause.

I have a couple of 41.0 Gig IBM GXP series deskstar drives, one is (was) a master, and the other the slave. I had to rebuild the PC and reinstall W2K Pro on a newer Samsung 40 Gig drive, and converted the former master into a slave... and it seems to be OK. But I also had moved a lot of data onto the _old_ slave and figured I'd suck it off once everything is running properly. Here's where the problem starts.

I reboot with the two slaves swapped, that is... the old slave is my secondary drive, but instead of showing up in the boot screen, nothing is there... just the root drive (new Sammy). Further, the IBM slave is producing two sort of medium toned beeps followed by a higher pitched "chirp" and it keeps repeating over and over. As an experiment, I put the beeping drive inside a USB housing and reconfigured it as a Master (per instructions). Drive still beeps, but I should note that it seems to spin up to speed and then a few seconds later begins beeping. It isn't really a click of death, but I'm wondering about that. I would somehow like to recover/repair that drive because of the data I'd like to get off it. Its not life or death, but there's plenty of stuff that I can't replicate. I had heard that maybe using Partition Magic somehow could help, but how do I use that when the drive is not recognized? The drive was built in June of 2001 and I think IBM had a 5 year warranty but I'm not sure. I have extra drives... Read more

Answer:IBM Deskstar GXP making weird beeps?

There is HDD-Regenerator from to revive harddisks.
Works off a bootable floppy, so you could put that HD in as Master and disconnect any other HDs.
You can D/L a trialversion first to see if it 'finds' that HD.

PM won't do you any good here.
You could also try IBM's own utilities (disk fitness test) to test the drive.
See the sticky at the top of this forum.

But I think you have another DeathStar!

Hey all.

Here's the thing..

IBM Deskstar HDD, made in Oct. of 2001. The drive appears to be making noise from time to time (can't pinpoint it though, doesn't do it all the time). Sometimes the machine won't be able to find an "Operating System". The IBM HDD test comes up as a fail, but after doing a repair sector, the drive comes up green. I'm curious, should I trust this hard drive, or should I trash it?

I JUST purchased an IBM HD on EBay and of course the seller swears it worked before he shipped. I knew the risks before going into this deal but I hoped when he said seller takes responsibility he ment that.

Anyway the drv was packaged nicely with the static resistant pouch. I made sure during the install that the jumpers which are obvious were set to IDE0 master. took all the drives out of my pc and attached it to the primary IDE and the black connector at the end of the ribbon. The connectors have the raised center slot to match the hd so I know the ribbon is faced the right way.

With the cmos set to auto it will not recognize the HD so I used the USER SETTINGS and put in the numbers on the drive 16383 33 16 and still not recongnized......

THIS IS LISTED AS AN ATA/66 .....I currently run a UDMA/66 AND ATA100 DRIVES by WD and they are recognized right away unless I have jumpers ATA100 drive does not like to be run on the same IDE channel as another drive I notice .

Question does it sound like this IBM DESKSTAR 20.5 gig DPTA-372050 has arrived DOA or is there something I am missing.

The drivers supplied in the Windows installation are all you need. There really aren't new drivers available.

Have you gone to Disk Management to initialize, and format the drive? Unless you do, Windows will not see the drive.

Unfortunately when he got his computer it only came with the op. system disk (Windows Vista) and NO boot disk. What can we do?? Is there anyway to download a boot disk to a CD from my computer to boot his back up?? Any suggestions are helpful at this point.

Answer:Deskstar Hard drive Boot Disk

Make sure there is no disk in the CDROM. Usually, a "boot from CD" message is asking if you want to boot from the CD and if you do nothing it will boot from the HD within 30 seconds or so.

What is the brand and model of computer? (usually found on a white sticker on the back of the case)

Hitachi claims that it's the world's most energy efficient desktop hard drive and reduces the active and idle power consumption by up to 40 percent over the previous generation.

Hitachi GST’s new hard drive is designed for commercial and consumer PCs and the drive will come in a range of flavors starting at 250GB and ranging to 500GB. Hitachi is promising these drives in high volume later this year. It'll be available from 4Q 2007 for an undisclosed price (it'll definitely cost a fortune)

Hi All

I am desperately seeking a Windows 98SE or Windows ME driver for my IBM Deskstar 75GXP IBM-DTLA-307075 hard disk. I have been all over IBM web sites and searching the Internet for around four years now, but to no avail.

Many Thanks

Answer:Deskstar 75GXP IBM-DTLA-307075 hard disk driver(s)

Harddrives don't need drivers. If you're having a problem with the drive it's probably due to the disk size. Computers have limits, as well as Win98 has it's limits.

The limits are usually at 2GB and 32GB. To be able to use a disk greater than that on an old motherboard you'd need to find a BIOS upgrade. A so called 'flash' file. It's a bit risky on old boards though, you might damage the board beyond repair so use it at your own risk.

Once you've upgraded your BIOS just go on to and download everything there and Win98 should be ready for larger drives as well. That's if you don't want to / can't upgrade to WinXP.

If you post your motherboards brand and model we could help you find the flash file.

when I booted the pc it said installing device drive software, and said, device is ready to use, I go to my computer, and it ain't there, do I have to set it as secondary in bios?

Open up Disk Management (in the admin tools control panel), it should show up in there. I'd delete all the partitions and create 1 new one that incorporates the whole disk. Then format as NTFS.

I've been looking at some of the features in Samsung Magician, and ran the Benchmark test twice. Both times I got very high scores, above the max listed in the program for all 4 tests. I have the drive set to MAXIMUM RELIABILITY. Just wondering about the scores reliability.

Scores in Parentheses are Samsung 's listed maximum high:

Sequential Read
549 mb (540)
Seq write
532mb (520)
Random read
97442 (97000)
Random write
70189 (66000)

Answer:Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250gb

Benchmarks are artificial at best [and a benchmark from the mfg is tailored to that particular piece of hardware] I would think you would get different results using a another benchmark program such as ATTO.

In short do not put too much emphasis on any given benchmark. Modern ssd drives are reliable and it should last for quite a while so I would not worry about the drive.

Hello, I just ran out of room on my 500GB HDD, Its a 7200 RPM and I like the speed of it. I started looking for a new HDD when I came across an 60GB SSD. I never thought of buying an SSD before. Now I can't decide if I should get the SSD or the HDD ( same price) I need a new drive for linux, but my current drive only has 3GB left. I was going to partition 30GB to linux and keep 30 for Windows. Then transfer my OS to the remaining 30GB, that would free some room. I am a gamer so I need alot of room for games. If I get the 250GB HDD then I would have alot of room for more games and linux. But then I would not be able to boot Windows 7 in seconds. What should I get?

My specs:
Intel core i5 2500K ( stock speed )

Answer:SSD 60GB or HDD 250GB?

Go with an SSD. If you choose the 60GB SSD, you will have just enough space for the OS and a Office Suite and a few other apps before you start to run out of space. If you can afford it, go with a minimum of 128GB SSD as your primary drive, then wipe your 500GB mechanical drive and use as a storage drive.

and I have drive C = 125GB, D = 125GB, and G = 250GB(this is the Maxtor)

then I do a boot-from-cd and install a fresh copy of XP Pro
now I cannot see my Maxtor

I tried to use my Maxblast3 software to mount the drive, but it say it only detect the Windows drive, therefore it won't let me run

When I tried to run Maxblast3 in DOS (from a floppy), I have to format and erase everything, I don't want to do that, I have some important documents on that drive that I do not want to lose

Hi, if the version of Windows on the install CD pre-dates Service Pack 2, you will get this problem.

Microsoft added the ability for Windows to see hard drives bigger than 137 GB in Service Pack 1 (and Service Pack 2).

If you have access to another PC, download Service Pack 2 (which includes Service Pack 1 btw), and integrate it into your install source and burn a new CD from which you can install. You can find good instructions for doing that here:

You can download Service Pack 2 (full 266 MB package) from here:

As a workaround, you can create a partition less than 137 GB, install Windows, and then install Service Pack 2 and you will be able to access the rest of the hard drive. Then you can partition the rest from the Computer Management interface (right-click "My Computer" > Manage...)

Hello, I'm hoping I can find a solution to my problem here as I couldn't find one elsewhere on the net.
I have a laptop and currently have a 120GB hard drive in an external enclosure. I have just bought a new 250GB hard drive and have installed it in the external enclosure. Though partitioning and formating the 120GB was a breeze, I've had nothing but problems with the new 250GB.
Below are the specs of what I'm working with. In both Partion Magic and in the Win2000 Disk Management, it correctly displays the 250GB drive (233GB). Regardless of which program I use (ie. Partion Magic, Win Disk Management, command line FORMAT) I get problems.
Generally, what will happen is it will partition fine. Then it will begin to the formatting process (VERY slowly) and then either throw an error either during or at the end of the process. And this is when I try to format a very small partition (ie. 100MB). I have successfully formated a 10MB partition. On a large partition (ie. 30GB) the format process will start but will not progress.
The only two things I can think of is that the drive is faulty, or because I am booting my OS from a floppy there is some sort of recognition problem.
I can't run the diagnosis software from Maxtor because that requires the drive to be installed internally.
So any help to this problem will be greatly appreciated.
Additionally, how long should it generally take to format the 250GB drive in its entirety?

When plugged in it appears in Disk Management but without a drive letter and when I right click on the drive most of the options, including allocate letter are greyed out. Any solutions?

Answer:USB 250GB HDD not recognised by PC

I would recommend PartedMagic, it is now paid for software, but at only $4.99 it is a sound investment. Download it, burn it to a cd or put it on a USB stick and boot from it.
Have the suspect drive connected and PartedMagic should be able to see it and it will enable you to format the drive, whatever the existing filesystem is.

I have two 250GB hard drive in my pc and I'm trying to install Windows XP Pro SP2. It's running on an Abit motherboard with Athlon 64 dual core 4400+ CPU. I got the computer from a friend and decided to do a clean install so I deleted the previous partions and made a new one. It went through the whole formatting process fine then went through the windows setup. It then did an automatic reboot but right after POST it gave me an error message. It said Trap followed by 0000005c ==============EXCEPTION=========================== and a series of hexdecimal messages afterworsd. I've done this twice and had the same problem and I just wanted to know if you guys knew anything about this?

Answer:Installing Win XP Pro SP2 on two 250GB HDD

Greetings gfx dude, Welcome to TSF!

Firstly, you only need to install the Operating System one ONE of the HDD's not both of them.
The second HDD can be connected as a "Slave" and can be used to 'save' everything that you download, plus emails and other data, such as music etc.
I suggest that you check the CD for scratches and marks; wipe it very gently from the centre to the edges with a lint free cloth.
To give you the best chance of getting Windows? installed without hassles, such as those you are experiencing, is to completely wipe the HDD with Darik's Boot N Nuke.
Wiping the HDD this way will completely erase everything off the HDD and take it back to a RAW unformatted state, as if it had just come out of the factory.

Just so that you do not forget anything when doing the installation, please read this...

The Windows? XP Installation Check List.

1. The Windows? XP SP2-CD (naturally)

2. Darik's Boot N Nuke (Click the coloured Link).

3. Please read this guide.

4. The Motherboard CD that contains all the necessary Drivers etc.

A couple of tips...
a. Darik's Boot N Nuke will take about 4? hours to completely wipe the Drive; however, this will vary depending on how big the Drive is. (That estimate is for a 80Gb HDD).

b. When you get to Figure 7 in 'The Guide', you can create more than one partition here by simply telling Windows? how big you want it. Should you do decide to create an extra parti... Read more

I've recently installed a new MSI KT3 Ultra motherboard, and a new 250 gig western digi hard disk. Now, in the bios it recognises that the drive is 250 gigs however when i setup xp it only recognises it upto 130 gig and won't see the full size of the drive.I know 48-bit LBA mode addressing needs to be enabled and as far as I can see it is turned on in the BIOS and as i say, the bios recognises it as 250 gig but windows doesnt and only shows it as 130 gig.Any ideas?

hi ,everybody i have a dell d600 laptop with a 40 gb harddrive and 2 gb memory . my question is i am trying to install a 250 gb harddrive ,but the laptop doesn't recognise the drive ,so i can't install windows on it . i even bought vista .the laptop won't recognise the drive .help

Answer:250GB Hdd Not Recognized

What do you mean the laptop won't recognize the 250GB drive? Do you mean in the BIOS? When trying to install Windows? You can try to download a linux LiveCD like Knoppix or Damn Samll Linux and boot from that (F9 or F12 at the Dell BIOS) and see if it sees it. If so, format with QTParted or Fdisk and then try Windows again. Maybe the drive is bad.

Let me know if this helps.

(did I miss anything?)

I appologize in advance for the long read.

This computer came with only a 10GB Seagate drive. It has less than 300MB left of unused memory, so I tried installing a 250GB Maxtor. It is only recognized as 30GB in the BIOS. I don't understand this because I have WinXP SP2 and LBA is enabled in the BIOS -
Not only that, but I have another 300GB Seagate that I want to install as a slave (I had previously installed this one as a slave to the 10GB but had the same problem with only 64GB being recognized.
I don't understand why my BIOS isn't recognizing it at it's full capacity since I have the latest version of BIOS and LBA is indeed enabled (I thought SP2 was supposed to correct this problem).

My hope is that someone out there can walk me through this step by step (from erasing the disk to installation) because I've been working on this thing all day long and nothing I've tried seems to work. The 10GB drive has to go. I want to install the 250GB drive as my master, copy the 10GB drive to it (I have Casper XP 3.0 for this purpose), and then install the 300GB drive ... Read more

Answer:250GB drive is seen only as 30GB

Did the Maxtor not come with a setup disc .....?
When you go to control panel / admin tools / computer management / disc management and right click on the "free" space of that drive what options do you get?

I have a 250GB Maxtor Hard Drive that I decided to convert to an external drive when I got my new Dell (bad idea). It worked great for about a month, then one day I get an 'ambulance-like' beeping alarm from the external. I'm relatively certain its telling me the hard drive is dead... most likely from insufficient cooling in the cheap external HD case I bought. But, I dont have any experience with hard drive alarms so i thought I'd ask. Does this alarm mean this drive is dead for good?

Answer:Dead 250GB Maxtor HD... I think

I would check your documentation from your ext. drive case and see what the sound meant. You can always plug it into an IDE cable to check it.

This is just what is says. A fresh win 10 install on a new SSD. Do not explain to me about cloning.

To date I've upgraded the BIOS (UEFI) on a ASUS P67 Performance Gen3 motherboard. I've changed the SATA Mode to AHCI. I can see the drive in the BIOS.

The Windows installer the page where it lists the drive partitions. I only see one drive partio

Drive 0 Partition 1 239.9GB 232.8 GB Primary

I get the error
Windows can't be installed on drive 0 particion 1. (Show Detailes)

The New button is greyed out and when I select next I get

We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files.

Answer:New WIN 10 Install on new SAMSUNG EVO 250GB SSD

Hello hiltonr92 and welcome to the forums. See if this will help

Are you installed in UEFI Mode? If so, when you boot from the USB drive use the entry that says UEFI and the name of your USB. If not in UEFI, boot from the name of your USB without UEFI in front of it. Delete all partitions on the drive until it says unallocated and then click the 'NEW" button. The installer will create all the necessary partitions. I hope that helps.

Hi to allI have just installed Maxtor 250GB HD into my P4 PC. Cmos bios reports the HD as 250GB during POST and Win XP C: drive properties reports that capacity is 250GB and used space is 134GB!!The only thing on the drive is the OS (winXP) it was brand new I partitioned/ formatted it using my XP cd. If I look at the properties individually on C: drive (windows, program files, docs and settings, etc) they add up to approx 1.5GB but C: properties is 134GB?any suggestions as to why XP is reporting the use incorrectly and a possible fix much appreciated.TIA

Answer:250GB HD showing too big used space

I recently installed a pair of 160gb drives and found on the Maxtor site that in order for the true capacity to be recognised by Windows you need 2 things[otherwise it only recognises up to 137gb];1 - to be running Windows SP12 - to run the Maxtor Big Drive Tool[available from Maxtor support website]

Bought a new 250 g hd for my box. I want to install xp pro. I am at the stage where it shows 1 partition at 131 gb

Xp pro disk in cd bay, boot disk in floppy.

Any help would be appreciated

Answer:New 250gb hd 131 showing? Partition Help??

Plain-Jane XP by default will only recognize drives up to 132GB. If you create an SP2 slipstreamed CD using autostreamer, it will recognize the full drive upon install. Or, complete your install, update to SP2 and then use the "diskmgmt.msc" command in the "run" line to format the remaining hard drive as a second partition.

My 30gb harddrive in my computer died a few weeks ago and a scoured the stores for a new hd. I found a Maxtor 250gb hard drive on sale at Fry's for $140. It was a great deal for the space but I have some questions on it's performance. It's P-ATA 133 with an 8mb cache,a seek time of 9.3ms and rotates at 7,200 RPM. I do a lot of multiasking with Everquest and just general gaming so my pagefile is huge and constantly used. I also do some video editing.

My real question is how does it rate for my needs. Should I look at buy another smaller hard drive to use as my main or keep use this as my only hard drive?

I have the hard drive split into two partitions right now and am wondering which partion actually is on the outside of the platters so I can properly put the pagefile in it's place? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Some questions about a new 250gb harddrive

I have the drive. Its currently the only drive, and I use a separate partition for the pagefile, but don't see (and didn't expect) a performance improvement. I have a rig with the swapfile on separate drives and it was noticably faster. So I would definately recommend a keeping the old drive - wherever you put the OS, keep the swapfile on the other one.

Bought a new Western Digital Sata HDD which I got today.
New in anti static bag and labelled WD2500AABS, says on it 250gb.
When I put it in my PC it shows as 40gb.
Thinking this may be an error I booted from Win XP CD to load OS and
it said 38.xx gb.
I have contacted the seller by Email but thought I may get faster and more reliable info from here.
I can of course return it but do not want to if it is me doing something wrong.

Answer:New 250gb Hdd Shows as 40gb

That model definitely shows as a 250GB see here
What version of XP? if you do not have SP3 you may not have support for large drives.
In Windows, click on Start->Run, enter "regedit".
Navigate to the HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Parameters registry subkey.
From the Edit menu, select New, DWORD Value.
Enter the name EnableBigLba, then press Enter.
Double-click the new value, set it to 1, then click OK.
Close the registry editor.
Restart the machine for the change to take effect.

Hi, I have Lenovo S500 and after I install the OS, the partition OEM Reserved is hidden in Windows and I want to use this because it's to large(it's not a few GB... it's almost 250GB, and i think that it's too much).I want to know why is created this partition? What's his function? Sorry for my bad english. Thanks!

Answer:Lenovo OEM Reserved 250GB

Hi Rxgamer,
Welcome to Lenovo Community!
I understand your concern, but let me inform you these partitions contain recovery image and Drivers/Default Applications. By deleting the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) partition the system will loose its ability to "Factory Reset/ OKR (One Key Recovery)" of the system.
Do post us back for further queries.

I have a 250gb external hdd which now only show 100mb.

It was an old hdd out of an old 7 laptop (which got accidently dropped and insurance replaced) I asked for the hdd back, which when I got it back was fine and working well, I did a quick format and not used it for over a year,

come to use it now to store movies and pictures on and it say volume 100mb?

How do I get the rest back?

Answer:250gb hdd showing only 100mb

Can you see it in Disk Management? (right click on My Computer and select Manage, then go to Storage > Disk Management). Disk Management (What It Is and How To Use It)
Is it showing the drive? Does it show the total disk size?

Would there be any conflict with this unit and W7.

I looked at this unit and it appears to me that it would be ideal for my laptop. I need about 120gb for backup of my C & D drives. I'm not sure if this unit is the best and find no place to compare it to other comparable products on the market.

If anyone has used this product I would ask your opinion of its performance and one other question. How long does it take for the first download of all files.

Answer:Seagate Replica 250gb with W7

If your only use is for disaster recovery, then this drive will do the job...That being said, I would recommend the purchase a large external drive that can also be used for storing individual files/folders...
