Preferred Solution: What the hell problem(dunno if it falls under hardware but it's an all in 1 printer)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Got a Y430 Ideapad with windows Vista basic.1] Lately having screen problems... lot of colors appear as if a magnet is placed on the screen. Screen jumps and flickers randomly for example if I were to open MS word it gets worse for PDF not so and if videos no probs with jumping but the color pattern is changed 2] I am not able to personalise settings. Right click->Personalise opens a folder box that disappears by itself. Same happens with Windows update icon. I get message 'Windows Update is available' if clicked the folder opens and closes by itself. What could be the problem? Is it software or hardware? Please suggest ways to detect where the problem.

Hello everyone. I'm new here and this will be my first post on here. I'm sorry if I have started this post in a wrong thread. I'm unsure of where it should go. Anyways, I'm not a tech expert so that's why I here. I will try my best to describe my problem tho.

First of all, I have been having this problem since last week. The problem is that it just auto shut down on me without any warning.

I thought it was because its overheating/the cpu reached it limits hence why it auto shut, but thats probably not the case.

And since that happened I just thought to myself that I should just reinstall windows. Haha. I thought that would solve my problem. But it didn't.

This crash problem occured when I opened game. I also realised that it happen as well when I browse the internet using firefox. Like after I opened it for a few minutes it then shut down.

However, if I'm not opening anything else and just at the desktop and only transferring files for hours, the crash never happen unlike after I rebooted, went to firefox, then googling stuff and then poof, it crashed. I also checked the cpu too, but its not overworking itself. Its just chilling.... Oh, and I checked it from task manager.

I already tried uninstalling the nvidia drivers and went to surf the internet afterward. No crashes at all. I could watch youtube as well without having it crash on me. But when I reinstalled the driver back. It happened again.

So... I don't know really wha... Read more

so yesterday i power up my computer and... it comes up with the, 'hey, your pci.sys file is screwt. go fix it.' message. so i look this up on google, on here, everywhere, and i come up with a couple of solutions that are suppose to work. i have tried these solutions. they didn't work

solution 1: pci.sys software

i did the XP recovery thing. i expanded pci.sy_ from the i385 directory on the cd. i also tried copying pci.sys from my second hard drive, which had the old xp install on it. then i tried using an SP2 interleaved (or whatever you call it) installation cd i had made, and used THAT pci.sy_ file.

still started with the pci.sys error.
solution 2: pci.sys hardware

i took out memory stick #1. rebooted. no joy. i took out memory stick #2. ditto. i took out memory stick #3, i didn't even get the screen to come up. i put the memory back in.

i took out a wireless nic card i have in the pci slot. rebooted. no joy. i put it back in.
i took out my pci-e video card (not even sure that's the same bus, but what the heck). rebooted. no joy.

and that's all that's in there! no sound card or anything. IS there a procedural anomaly because i did it backwards? that is, instead of ripping EVERYTHING out first, and putting back in one by one, i just ripped out one at a time?

also note: my power supply in this machine blew out 3 weeks ago. i got a replacement and powered it up and everything ran fine, so presumably it did not blow up any... Read more

Answer:Solved: pci.sys Software Hardware I dunno what ware

today i ran MemTest86 v4 on it.

When playing this game, the monitor just automatically turned black. I pressed a button on it and it said it was in Power Save mode, and it told me to press a key or move the mouse. When I did nothing happens. It interrupts my gaming. Anybody know a way to disable it?

Answer:Dell 19" LCD E193FP Monitor (I guess this falls under hardware)

I'm having the same problem with any OpenGL or DirectX game using my E193FP hooked up to a Radeon 9700 Pro. Updated the display driver, the video card driver to no avail. Even running Catalyst Control Center causes a VPU crash. But if I switch to my old 17" CRT everything works fine.

Hate to break it to you - but dude, you got a Dell.

I will try to explain the problem I am having as completely as possible. I have a HP Pavilion desktop computer that I am having very strange problems with. I bought the upgrade cd for Windows XP a while ago and upgraded from Windows ME. I know the upgrade is supposed to have a few problems, but I did it that way and thought if there were problems I would just do a full format and fresh install with XP. I also added 128 MB of ram as the HP only came with 128 to begin with.
The cpu is a 900 Mhz Duron, I have upgraded the videocard to a GeForce MX440 as well.
The problem is that after the upgrade to XP. The computer would stop being able to access the internet after about 4 or 5 hours. The first 4-5 hours were fine, but after that I would have to reboot in order to sign on. I am running verizon dsl that is always on and using a Netgear wireless router. The HP is hardwired to the router and there are 2 other computer in the house using wireless 802.11 b network cards. These other computer have no problems connecting at any time. One is using Windows XP and the other Windows 98 se.
I thought it must be a problem with the XP upgrade. So I did a full format and a fresh install of XP. I thought my problems would be over, but the exact same thing is happening. The network icon shows that I am connected, but I cannot get on the internet, unless I reboot.
Very frustrating, if anyone has any ideas what the problem might be and help would be appreciated...thanks, Brad

Answer:Hardware hell(p) please

From what you are describing, " computer stops being able to access the internet after about 4 or 5 hours". There might be some problem with your TCP/IP protocol. You may need to unistall the protocol, and then reinstall and reconfigure.

Question: Hardware Hell

About 5 months ago my I suffered a power outage and since then my PC would not boot properly. I swapped in and out a lot of different hardware and eventually just ended up buying a new hard drive which seemed to fix everything. That was about 2-3 weeks ago, and my PC was running great. Then, about 2 days ago, I woke up and went to move the mouse to ‘wake up’ my machine, and nothing happened. Also, the hard drive status light was on continuously. It seemed to be running but I could find no way to snap it out of its stasis. I rebooted manually and while loading Windows XP (after the welcome screen) the monitor went black again and it appeared to lock-up.

I figured I’d start by trying a system restore. I managed to boot into safe mode and ran the system restore successfully which seemed to fix the problem as it booted up into windows fine and all was right in the world. Then after about 15 minutes of web browsing and whatnot, it hung again and the display went dead. I’m pretty sure this happened when I went to open a video file, which led me to a diagnosis of a busted video card.

Having no way to troubleshoot the vid card, I decided to see if my power supply was being overtaxed because I was running 2 hard drives now which I had not done in the past, so I unhooked the slave drive and adjusted the settings and tried to boot. At this point, I couldn’t even get to the boot menu to try safe mode without the thing hanging. So figuring I was pretty stuck I just gave up for the ... Read more

Re-installed both drivers (PCL & PS) but won't print via either driver. Printer always says "Ready." It wasn't printing at all until I changed BIOS from SPP to ECP+EPP. After that it started printing what was left inthe qeue - but only after a restart. Tried another computer with it and kep getting message on printer, "Wrong language - cancelling print job." Hello all
I am trying to get a Lexmark x73 up and running again - its been sitting around in storage for a while - PC itself has a bunch of issues but i think i've managed to sort most of those out - ie USB controller issues - anyhoo

here's the problem
when i try to turn the printer/scanner on to install it, the power light comes on for a few seconds then the printer head violently smashes itself against the inside of the case and the it turns itself off - or rather into standby mode (flashing light)

I can't seem to find a reset switch and am begining to think it might just be kaput

does anyone have any suggestions?

Answer:Lexmark x73 printer hardware problem

Welcome to TechSpot

It being a Lexmark, you finally found a good way to use your windows. Open them up, throw it out, and hope nobody was walking underneath!

Don't waste your energy on a crap printer that costs an arm and a leg to run.
Get a new one, such as the Canon Pixma IP4000. Relatively cheap to buy, very cheap to run with 5 separate cartridges, extremely good in print- and photo-quality. Connects USB and Parallel.

I have a HP 3015 printer. I accidently connected 220 volts(instead of 110) and probably burned out the internal voltage transformer that appears to be a part of the power supply board. The power supply board costs $165 delivered and the printer is 5 years old, so spending that much on an old printer doesn't make much sense.
The transformer (on the board) is probably a $10 or so item and could easily be replaced if I could find a source for the transformer.(see attached picture- the transformer appears to be the red device to the right on the board) The balance of the board does not appear to be damaged.
Can anybody suggest a source for the subcomponents of the power supply board or a place where a used or less expensive board can be purchased or where this one can be sent for repair at a reasonable price?

Answer:HP Printer 3015 Hardware problem

I hate say but... It's a "5 years old," printer and cheap when new...

Don't waste much time or money fixin' it

If you click the report button at the bottom right of your post and ask it be moved to hardware you might get some different advice.

Recently i got problem with my computer

After I shut down my entire computer the next time when i try to reopen it

It doesn't come out, the Power light is on, monitor power light also on but the booting(the red light) which indicates the computer is running isn't working anymore i check the every possible cable like the Power Supply, HDD , Video Card, Monitor, every things works fine, but my computer doesn't even booting.

So I don't really Know what the problem is right now

can someone tell me which part should i fix it.

thank you

Answer:PC Problem dunno what problem it is not Video Card, Not Power Supply, Not HDD, Not MB

Open the PC, then switch it on. Check that all fans (in the powersupply, on the CPU, perhaps also on the graphics card and the motherboard) are running.
If not, tell us which one is not working.
Most likely your powersupply no longer works. Give us the manufacturer's name and model, please.

Question: Printer Hell

Can anyone tell me why my Deskjet 845c shows on HP's site as an 895? HP has a link you can click on that will auto test your printer and it is coming back 895. I cant get any of the drivers to work off the 845c disc that came with the printer. So I downloaded the 895 dirvers and they load just fine, but I get an error message saying that it coudlnt "add new printer" and when I go into "system" it is showing 895 as a USB connection. BTW when I plugged in the printer, the USB read it as an 845c. HELP!!!

Question: Printer Hell!

My printer responds to the print command, but doesn't print any of the information that is viewed on the page. All I seem to get is symbols and strings of letters it doesn't say anything at all. All I want is to print my documents for school or whatever is showing on my screen, I have a hp deskjet 640c, anyone have any suggestions ????

Answer:Printer Hell!

Sounds like the driver is corrupt. Go to Add/Remove Programs or Start -> Programs -> HP Deskjet and use the uninstaller to remove the driver/software. Then go to Start -> Settings -> Printers and remove all printers listed. Next go to HP's website and download the latest driver and install it. Hopefully this will fix your problem.

Question: HP printer Hell!

Since installing Vista my old multi funtion printer would only print in B&W but the printer was old no vista driver. So Sunday saw nice Hp Officejet j5700 which said Vista Ready. Brought it home proceeded to hook it up except driver cd only list XP. So downloaded newest Vista driver ( 1 1/2 hrs) installed according to direction. At the very end after the print is working the installer had a fatal error and when you continue it uninstalls everything. When the computer reboot I get an error saying I can't receive MS Updates. Well HP "support had me try installing the driver over and over with the same results every time.
Finally I used task manager to shut down the installer so it would not uninstall the printer driver. It stil ininstalled at the next reboot but windows was able to find and install it then without the installer.

*So now I have a working color printer
*A Non working Scanner
*Windows Update still can't download - Ive all tried everthing Ms suggests for this error

Hp's only suggestion to date is to turn on updates, why didn't I think if that

If anyone knows of a printer scanner copier that works with Vista I'd love to know and I also need an idea on fixing this update thing.

Hey Gang...

I have an HP Officejet d145 (all-in-one) that's close to 2 years old, I believe. Anyway, I replaced the color cartridge quite some time ago, only to be instructed by a pop up window that I needed to replace the black ink cartridge as well. I replaced the black cartridge this morning. Ok... I ran printhead alignment, and then calibrated the colors. To my dismay, I keep getting the "IDS Failure, Call HP", displayed on the all-in-one window. I've gone to the HP website to read about the error, which instructed me to clean the printheads. Ok, I cleaned the printheads... not once, but twice! I then attempted to print another test page and wound up getting the same IDS error. Short of smoke coming out of my ears, I caved in and called HP. Well, their tech support is so wonderful that they wanted to charge me $30.00 to walk me through the proper steps. Ummm, aren't the proper steps listed in the HP "help" website?
It's not about the $30.00... it's about the fact that I'm very capable of following instructions, HAD THEY HAVE PUT THE PROPER INSTRUCTIONS on their website. So, before I have a small meltdown, does anyone know what I can do to get this darn printer printing? I've considered uninstalling, and re-installing. The only thing stopping me is that I am, afterall, dealing with an HP.

Thanks in advance...

A while back, whenever I put CD or connected a camera to my computer, it used to pop a menu up with what I wanted to do with it. But now when I insert a CD it just spins the CD and I have to go open the CD folder to record stuff to it or open WMP to listen to it.

How do I get this menu back?

Right-click the desired CD-ROM and select Properties from the menu:
Select the AutoPlay tab.
The top dropdown has different selections as: Pictures, Music, DVD, etc. Just select each one and at the bottom:
Tick the radio button:
Prompt me each time to choose an action then Apply and OK.

Hi, I'm new here (meaning I just made an account but have been lurking around every time I had computer trouble. This time however, I couldn't find anything that resembles the trouble I'm currently experiencing) and I'm hoping if anyone can help me or tell me if I should just throw my laptop against the wall.

I've had my printer (details and TSG SysInfo below) for over a year now, and never had any trouble with it. A few days ago, I needed to print something but wasn't able to (I can't remember what the error said, it didn't happen again) so I uninstalled the printer and re-installed it by downloading the drivers from the HP website. Pop-up balloon said that it wasn't successfully installed and when I would try to install the driver by going to print management and click on Printers I would get: "An error has occurred on the script of this page. Line: 40. Char: 21. Error: Object doesn't support property or method 'SetPrinterName'. Code: 0. URL: res://C:\Windows\system32\pmcsnap.dll/81". So I clicked on Drivers instead and tried to install the driver there and it said: windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error.

Do understand that I have no idea what I'm doing whenever my computer doesn't behave as it is supposed to, and everything is done by trial and error; mostly error. For some reason I felt the need to do a chkdsk /f /r which was scheduled on the next restart, b... Read more

I have an HP Laserjet 4250 printer.

Windows Update attempted to install the latest PCL6 driver over the original shipping PCL5 driver.

That install failed.

As per MS's instructions, I attempted to install HP's printer driver.
This resulted in a new printer driver, Universal Printing PCL6, which took over the port of the old driver, Laserjet 4250 PCL5.

I can't print from the LaserJet 4250 PCL 5 driver, the LaserJet 4250 PCL 6 driver, or the Universal Printing PCL6 driver.

I can't delete the printers. I can't delete the drivers or the ports from Print Server Properties, because they are all "in use." I get a "this operation is not supported" error.

I need to blow away the entire printing subsystem and start from scratch.

Is there any way of doing this short of backing up my files and reinstalling Windows 7?

Answer:HP printer driver hell

System restore around it - you should always turn off auto update - this is a reoccurring problem with microsoft they supply a driver every now and again that doesnt work. I have it set on - download updates but ask me when to install them, and unticked the box - give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates.

Hi, I am running Windows XP and connecting to a Photosmart C4580 using USB. My printer was working fine, but now has totally stopped. I see that jobs get queued up in the print spooler and dont go anywhere. I noticed that one of the files in the print spooler folder with an SPL extension was being recognized as a Shockwave object - I CLEANED that up by deleting the extension in the file associations and uninstalling Shockwave. This has not shown up again but no change to my printing status yet. Not sure what is happening. Here is what I have done so far:
1. Soft reboot of printer (using the OFF button)
2. Hard reboot of printer and laptop with 10 mins in switched off mode so that the memory clears completely
3. Cleaned the files stuck in the spooler multiple times by stopping the spooler and restarting. I have had no issues in starting or stopping the spooler.
4. Multiple stops and starts of the spooler with cleaning of files and reboots, etc.
5. Uninstalled all HP software and drivers and reinstalled. During the uninstall I also went and cleaned up the temp folders just in case using a %temp% command. I have run the uninstall so many times, I am dizzy.

Does anyone know how to deal with this?

Based on my personal experience with my Compaq Evo laptop a few months ago, it might be an issue with your hard drive. I replaced mine and noticed a significant performance increase. With the old hd, things were slow, random freezing, looong time to shutdown.

As an example, my computer wont remember some things, like it might not keep cookies stored, etc...but i dont think cookies are the problem, because it happens in other programs too, like Thunderbird email (the only one i can think of right now because i'm using it).

What Thunderbird does, is every time i open it, it asks me if I want to use it as my default mail program, and every time I say yes (and i mark the box for it not to ask me again). But of course, it does it every time anyway. Also, it "installs" the same update ( approximately once per day.

i dont think it's a problem with TB, but a problem with something on my end? im certainly no expert though, thats why i come here.

I use ebay a lot also, and it seems like the same kind of thing happens there sometimes, where it won't remember my settings (that makes me think cookies).

Few days ago I woke up and my mouse wouldn't work. Kept saying "failed to install device, INF might be pre windows 95" or something like that I tried a few things and finally after a couple installations of Intellipoint I got it to work again. I had a new mouse ordered that came in the mail today. Plugged it in, doesn't work. Old one gives me the INF message again after it tries to to autoinstall. And no matter how many times I try to install the intellipoint drivers, there's always something down in the corner trying to autoinstall and it can't it's just so messed up.

Talked to a M$ guy, he had me in the registry deleting things which was difficult to do and read what I was deleting with only the keyboard, and now that its all over I have nothing, keyboard, nor mouse will work and I have no idea even where to begin to try and fix it. The help guy had me delete all the Root Hub's in device manager and HID devices and stuff. Now everything is s messed up I dunno what to do.

Someone please tell me what to do. I'd format but i dunno if vista will allow it without making me pay for it again or something.

Answer:I dunno if Vista is the problem. Lost. Help.

Well, I thought it was resolved, but it isn't...the problem from hell. I have never experienced a problem this discouraging and frustrating, and seemingly insoluble; it just keeps coming back:

My Epson 700 photo printer will not work correctly since I built my new system, and neither will any other printer. It sometimes will print ok, but most of the time, only half a sheet will print, or a few garbled lines, and then it will continue to spit out blank page after blank page as long as there's paper in the loader, until I delete the print job. This happens universally, in most applications; it's not app.-specific, unfortunately.
Here's the specs on my system, which I put together myself:

Hi. I'm a production assistant at a small film company. We just moved locations and it was my job to reset all the tech. One of the most important things was to get a non-wireless network-enabled laser printer (HP LaserJet 1022n) onto the wireless network. I was having trouble with that, when sure enough, something else happened. I'm now getting a paper jam error even though there is no visible paper anywhere in the printer. I cleaned all reachable parts, I dusted the hell out of it with canned air, and I even took some of it apart just to get a better look - nothing. I had just been printing test papers last week, too.

We really don't have enough money to buy another networkable laser printer, so does anyone have any more ideas before we call someone to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

got a vista machine, users says they did an update, weren't sure if it was legit or not

anyway, the machine boots and acts like it's installing updates (black screen, white type, xxxx/xxxxx files installed)

and all it says is

and will sit there for 3 hours

i mean i guess there is always a reload, but it seems like it's locked up on installing updates

Black screen and white print isn't a vista update screen, a chkdisk would give you that but not an update. Can you boot into safe mode?

Whats up guys. Alright well I'm building a computer, as I've built at least 3 from the ground up(been a couple years since I've built or even opened one up though) I figured it'd be a piece of cake. I'm gonna try and list as many things as I can as I'm not positive what went wrong. I was assured the components would all work together(reassured really as I had made a list of exactly what went with what). I got an Aspire Dreamer X-II case which comes with a 350w psu. I put in a gigabyte mobo, i915PL chipset and installed a 3.2 Ghz P4. I hooked everything up including harddrive, cdrom, geforce 6600GT, and ram(DDR 1GB 3200 Dual KByte (2x512) 400MHz). I pressed the power button, and the computer didn't turn on but the fans did, and they were kinda jumpy. I thought wtf and i unplugged everything right away except for cpu and ram, then (7hrs later) replugged in power cables to the motherboard, started it up, same thing but fans slowed down a little. I unplugged cpu and double checked connections, turned it on again(only ram and mobo connected to power or anything for that matter) and after about 2 seconds a chip near the ram fried. I took out the mobo and put in back in the box to take back tomorrow, but I don't really want to make the same mistake twice. I might even take back the ram and get a i915P board for the HD audio. I'd greatly appreciate any insight. Thanks a lot. Oh and btw I'm gonna pick up a 20-pin to 24-pi... Read more

Answer:Fried the motherboard dunno whats the problem

Hi m8,first Id throw away that psu and buy a decent one,a great 350 psu would only just be enough for a p4 3.2 and 6600gt and that aint a great one"the ones that come with case never are"The make and specs of it would be helpfull.

2 other power connectors you may not be familiar with are the 12v atx power that plugs in near the cpu"square 4 pin" and the video card power"a standard molex that plugs into the back of the vid card"

You also didnt mention any beep codes,I would guess you havnt plugged in your speaker to the mobo, check before you try again they can be really helpfull at times like this.

IMHO I would take back that cpu aqnd board and exchange it for an amd one,one reason because I'm an amd fan boy,but the other main reason the 3.2 p4 "presscot" core's are plauged with heat problems

look to the right and see how many worried p4 owners have viewed these threads for advice.

With the standard cooling thay can be hard to keep under 70 degrees c and over that they start to throttle, they slow down so as not to damage themselves, you may not even notice while using it,but its performance lost that you have payed for.

Hope someone can shed some light here.
I'm running XP Pro on an HP Pavillion laptop, 3.2Ghz, 1GB, 80GB, latest SP's installed, using Zone Alarm firewall and IE6.

While I'm typing, even while filling out this thread form, every 10 to 20 keystrokes or so, my cursor will jump to some other place on the page/document, with no rhyme or reason as to where it will end up. The same happens in Office XP Word, Excel, Notepad. . anything where I use the keyboard to make a character/number entry. I ran a Trend Micro online virus scan as well as Adaware and no viruses, the usual spyware detected and removed and a reboot and still the same problem.

This is big-time annoying -- PLEASE, help!!

Thanks in advance

Answer:Annoying keyboarding problem-virus??. . . dunno

Has this system always been like this ? Was it ever good ? Did something happen (like new hardware or software or an update) just before it went bad ?

Does it jump like you suddenly pressed the "alt-tab" key ? Is your keyboard dirty, filled with cookie crumbs and coffee spills ?

Is there a trackball or mouse on the system ? If you disable all the other data input devices, does it still happen ? If you disable the keyboard, does it still happen? If you have the keyboard enabled, but don't touch the keyboard, does the cursor still jump around ?

If you press certain keys (in a controlled manner) can you make (or prevent) it from happening ? Like if you only touch the spacebar repetitively. Count the number of times you press the spacebar. Does the cursor jump after a certain number of keystrokes ? Is that number consistant ?

Does it happen more often if the laptop is in your lap, compared to when it is stationary on a table ?

Are there any loose connections with wires (like a mouse) coming from your laptop ? Check these and see if you can make the cursor jump by wiggling and twisting the connections & the wires.

In short, try to define a set of circumstances where it either happens MORE or LESS often.

Are there any programs where the cursor DOESN"T jump ? If so, are you SURE? If so, and you are not sure, try to make it happen in the program. If you can't make it happen in one program, but you can't stop it in another, that co... Read more

I come to the well of knowledge...

From the looks of some of the threads here, the HP LaserJet 4250 has been the bane of some folks' existence. Add me to the list.

I have a Windows 7 64-bit machine that connects to a Windows 2003R2 (32-bit) terminal server via RDP. The HP 4250 printer in question here (USB-connected) was automatically set up by Windows as an "HP LaserJet 4250 PCL5" using the Win7 built-in drivers and works fine locally.

However, I am unable to find a compatible 32-bit driver for this printer to install on the terminal server that will allow me to connect to the printer from the RDP session. The 32-bit drivers available from HP are PCL5e or PCL6 and are not compatible with the Win7 built-in driver. And, the only built-in Windows 2003R2 driver for this printer is PCL6!

Further, I cannot get Windows 7 to accept an alternative driver. When I plug in the printer's USB cable, Win7 automatically finds it and forces me to use the built-in driver. Win7 will also not let me install an updated driver; it says that the currently installed driver is the best and most current.

I'm at a stand-still here. Any ideas how to get around this.

Answer:More HP 4250 Printer Hell -- An RDP horror story.

Hello all,I use a Dell v305w printer with my Dell Studio 1535 laptop.  For the past few weeks, my printer will print 1 or 2 pages of a document, but then I will get a message saying:"Found New Hardware: Windows needs to install software for your S1307 Lexmark series"Afterward, my printer is unresponsive until I restart my computer. Why is this happening?  I've never used any Lexmark products before.  Is it a virus?  Do I need to uninstall then re-install the Dell driver software?  I use Windows Vista, and I've had the computer and printer for 2.5 years.  I've never used the wireless capabilities of the printer either.  Only the USB cable.I recently downloaded the Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (after this problem started).  I use McAfee and Spybot programs for anti-virus and malware protection.  I've tried running scans in both programs while my computer was in safe mode, but this did not solve my problem.  My internet connection is a public wireless network on my campus. Thanks for any advice you can give!

Answer:Dell v305w printer "Found New Hardware" problem

Certainly sounds like "someone" tried to introduce a Lexmark printer via your network. Go into "printers and faxes or whatever it is denoted as in Vista and see what printers are listed there. truenorth

Hi All,

I use a Sony printer for my work as a photographer. The printer uses scsi connection. I have an adapter which converts the scsi to usb,

When i try to install the printer it automatically says "found new hardware - SONY UPDr100 SCSI Printer" this is what i want to install but instead, its changes to say "found new hardware - generic printer" and installs it as the "generic printer".

On the device manager, the generic printer appears under the scsi and ieee1394 heading.

i have tried to disable the generic option and reinstall the printer but it doesnt work.

I just wondered if there's any way to stop the Add Hardware Wizard automatically installing the printer as a generic so i can install the sony drivers.

can anyone help?

Also get error messages at start up, one off hand being from Outlook Express, which I have tried in vane to completely delete. Mostly it is the Pop ups that concern me as they interupt almost everything I do. I am not sure if I have uploaded the right scans or not, as this is new to me.

Hi i am currently running a NVIDA Geforce FX 5700le video card and for some reason it does not seem to be running the quality it once used to have.

My Pc is AMD Athlon XP 3200+
2.19 Ghz
512 MG ram

I play halo online and I use the program called fraps, which records video directly from the game to my hard drive. Now lately in the last year or so fraps has been crashing my pc and rebooting it in the middle of filming the game. Now i never did this before but now it started doing that. I typically get around 60 fps but like now the fps seems to be lower. Sometimes also my video glitches durring the game causing me to see threw the whole game. Is this an indication that my card has reached its grave?

Thank you in advance.

Answer:Hell/ First problem

Hi and Welcome to Techspot!!

Maybe your card is overheating. Open up your PC, and clean your video card, using a can of compressed air. Clean its fan and its heatsink. Check if the fan is spinning correctly.

If your card has a temperature sensor, download a program like Everest Home Edition, and check its temperature.

I probably got a virus on my machine but it's the strangest symptoms i've ever heard of:
*I can't run my Norton AV 2004 Pro or Zonealarm, they just dont run.
*I can't access anything in administrative tools in the control panel.
*in the task manager, in the processes tab, NOTHING SHOWS, just a gray window.
* here's the weirdest part - i can't connect to any anti-virus web sites! i tried symantec, panda, mcafee and a couple of other sites and it simply say "The page cannot be displayed" like im not connected although i have no problem connecting to other sites. it's like it knows when im looking for an anti-virus.
* also when i search in google for anything with the word virus in it, the explorer shuts down! same thing in netscape by the way...
I just don't know what to do!
I tried system restore - doesn't work, it can't restore.
netscape doesn't help.
safe mode - no good.
downloaded vcleaner.exe from somewhere - it can't find anything.
although my NAV 2004 doesn't work, i managed to activate the pre-installation scan from the CD, but it can't find anything.
I have downloaded panda platinum but it can't install, it blockes it too.
I can't use any on-line virus scans because i can't get to any page related to viruses as i already explained.
I'm desperate...
please, if anybody knows what's the devilish thing is or how can i fix it, let me know.

Answer:I need help, a problem from hell!

Wait til you get a load of this.....

My original computer was an asus m2n-x with an athlon x2 2800, 2g of ddr2 pc6400 patriot, an x1950pro, seagate 500gig sata drive, all powered by an orion 585w psu. Last week, my computer started having random restarts and telling me upon restart that "windows have recovered from a serious error." It started rebooting more frequently until finally it wouldnt get past the loading screen. Boots into safe mode just fine however so I just assume driver error, bad software, yada yada. I pull up my hardware profile and nothing is showing. it's completely blank! i try to view the error log and its blank and i get an error message. Time for a reformat. I boot off the windows disc, delete and full reformat, windows loads its stuff and restarts. I get past the loading screen, 39 minutes remaining in installation, andddddd restart. Reboots, boots off the hdd, starts the installation again andddddddd restarts. This continues a couple times before I get fed up. I pull the video card apart, clean it, apply some arctic silver, still the same problem. I pull the processor apart, clean it, apply arctic silver, and still the same problem. I pull one stick of ram out, still the same problem. I swap the sticks of ram.....nothing. I swap out my power supply for an identical one out of my wife's computer and no solution. I grab my backup hdd, try and boot into windows, and i get the same restarting problem. This hdd also boots into safe mode... Read more

I have a laptop that I use for work that I take home every night. At work i have a usb printer that is on the network, but only I use it. Every time i log in at work and attach the printer, my laptop sees it as new hardware and runs the new hardware wizard. it finds the printer and sets a copy in printers and faxes. the original copy of the printer then goes offline but is still kept as default- thus making it virtually unusable. i then have to go into printers and faxes and set the new copy as default to be able to print. is there a solution to this problem?

Answer:New hardware-printer

Do you plug the printer in the same port and then boot up? or just plug it in any port any time? I use a USB video 'card' and if I plug it in after boot it gets 'reloaded' as a new device.

I have a users machine that spits out this error when launched:

One of your object libraries (I) is missing or damaged. Please run setup to install it.

My research on the net was gloomy. I saw lots of potential fixes, but not a single one that actually resolved the problem. It seems to be a registry issue, but after 4 hours never did find a fix that actually worked.

I've sent that machine off to imaging, but I hate accepting "it can't be fixed" as an answer.

Anyone have a REAL fix for this? If you can think of it, I've probably done it

The issue is machine-wide, not profile dependent. Uninstalling, scrubbing, and reinstalling doesn't fix it.

I uninstalled, killed every key in the registry related to Excel, and reinstalled. Didn't fix it.

It will launch in excel safe mode, but even with all add-in's of any type disabled the error still happens in normal launch.

Hey guys, long time reader, first time poster. I have a major problem that I just can't figure out.

Just got a new Mobo, proccessor, and memory for my PC. Asus P5LD2-VM, Intel Pentium Dual Core 2.66, and two 512 sticks of DDR2 from Corsair. Hooked it up with an IDE Maxtor model 6L160P0 160 Gb hard drive and a Soublaster Audigy 2 sound card. Both of which I've been using for a while, so I know there isn't a defect with them.

Just bought it, hooked it up, made sure everything was in place. I got it all connected and boot it up, but instead of the normal loading screen it fits all of the loading info (HIMEM test, drives, etc) into a space about 2 inches tall, that constantly flickers with the words jumping around in that 2 inch tall window. I can make out a few words as the rapidly dance across the screen: Error (can't tell what kind) and Press F1 to continue. When I hit F1 to continue it takes me to an equally messed up bios screen. When I hit F10 and Enter (having to guess that it's the standard) to save and exit, it comes up to normal as it checks for drives again, so I know it's not an onboard graphics problem. Then it gets to start loading windows and goes back to the same flickering thing again. If I hit F8, it takes me to a normal display of the way I'd like to run Windows (normal, safe mode, last known good settings, etc). Then, as soon as I pick an option, it goes back to the weird two inch flickering screen and either freezes or... Read more

Hey guys,

I'm working in a school where in late 2011 we installed twenty four Brother DCP-195C printers. It is a colour printer/scanner combition. Good machines and worked well. In the last few months, the black ink has begun to fail on numerous printers. No amount of head cleaning seems to be working to get them going.

Test print page are producing colour lines but no black.

Any ideas on a physical fix to solve the problem?

I am working on a dell computer. OS XP.

I have tried to install a dell printer and an hp printer on this computer and I keep having the same problem.

After I install the software - and wait for the installation wizard tells me to plug in the usb, the computer detects it, gives me an error message that it could not install the hardware and then continually detects it, gives me the error message, etc.

It also make the other usb devices hang up, ie. the wireless mouse.

I've tried it in safe mode thinking it might be something at startup with no success. I've tried uninstalling, installing, deleting the usb ports from the device driver, etc.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Is there a way I can get the driver or anything?
Here are the specs for the printer and computer:
HP Pavilion a520n
Windows XP Professional
Printer: Canon PIXMA ip1600

I tried downloading the driver from hxxp://
But when I ran the .exe file, all it did was unzip it and make a Canon folder. I then tried the Installation Wizard to look for the driver but it couldn't...

Hi,Everytime I restart the PC it comes up with 'found new hardware' for the printer. It is already installed. I have downloaded the drivers and tried to go through the install process but it ends with an error even though the printer seems to be installed and working fine. I have deleted it and tried to reinstall it at start up but nothing seems to work. I found a link which said to delete something from the registry (click here) but I wasn't sure it was ok to do this. Can anyone help? Thanks

Hello all.. I have been dealing with computers for several years now and considered myself tech savvy, until today..
Vista Administration Problems
I am an avid computer builder and bought an OEM vista premium 32bit OS.. Well turns out microsoft doesn't support me and wants me to pay a 59$ technical fee in order to answer my question.. So I am back from the 30minute waiting/call from an outsourced village worker in speak'engnot..

I guess I will get to my problem..
I recently restored my OS due to a faulty windows update(who would imagine such things) to only be greeted by a BLANK desktop and a "new" guest pass to my PC..

This guest pass not only doesn't let me view my contents from my admin folder, but every single button to even grant me access to an admin feature, is broken.. The buttons just do not work..

I have tried the "net user administrator /active: yes" and it just says failed.
Have also tried to run in safe mode to manually create a admin account by, cmd/ "control userpasswords2". This didnt work either. Nor did it let me create a standard account..
Now I am at the point where I just want my files back.. I am willing to do just about anything to acheieve this. Even a reformat..

I just don't know how I would go about doing that. Create a separate partition?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Hey everyone. I recently brought Left 4 Dead for PC. Installed and was playing the game, and then kaboom. Computer went on a rampage, I went alt-ctr-del to exit program but basically computer crashed. Ive had to do a fresh vista install to get her working again because everytime I loaded her up after the crash my screen was all fuzzy and eventually froze.

So here I am, after a full system restore having problems. Is my graphics card, motherboard or something else fried?

Here is where I am at. Ive installed Windows Vista, fully updated her using auto-updates. I have been to Nvidia website and clicked and fully upgraded my drivers for motherboard and gfx card using auto-detect fuction of their website.

I click Device manager and click my gfx card and I see a error icon over my gfx card. When I click properties on my gfx card I get the message "Windows has stoped this device because it has reported problems (code 43)".

Im pretty sure all my drivers are updated.

So guys, what could the problem be? My computer specs are down below as are 2 pictures. 1 of the error icon and another of my current screen because its still all fuzzy as I type this.

ANY help, suggestions would be MUCH appricated. Im stumped.

Pleaseeeeeeeeee, can somebody help me. I got this fffffff problem and I have tried everything (programs) that is out there. I did read on one thread here that youdid solve the problem. I tried to follow the instructions but couldnt get rid of it. So here is my logfile if anybody can help me? problem, burn in hell!

Welcome to MajorGeeks, Milad77

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
and then attach the requested logs to your next reply when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:
If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes, you could use a flash drive too, but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

Ok, about a month ago, my computer became almost impossible to boot up. I was using a 400w power supply, Athlon 3000+ cpu, KH8T motherboard (I think), 2 512mb 400mhz Kingston RAM dimms, and a last gen Radeon video card. When I booted the computer, it would power up and run for a few moments, then just shut off. Sometimes it would happen within seconds, sometimes I could get into the bios and tool around for a minute, sometimes I could even get into windows before it shut off.

In order to beat the problem, I tried repeatedly hitting the power button, flipping the power supply on/off switch, holding in the reset button as I hit the power button (system wouldn't load, but the system WOULD power up without shut-off untill I released the reset button- fans running the whole time). Occassionally I could successfully get the computer to boot into windows, and stay running.... however by the time I would come back from work - it'd be off.

So a friend comes by, asks me to build a computer for his other friend. I agree, and within half an hour I'm loaded with a bunch of really nice parts, and am told as payment I can swap out parts of his that are better than mine with my parts (3000+ athlon becomes 3400+ (both socket 754), power supply becomes 550w, video card becomes Radeon X700, Motherboard becomes an NF8 series abit board). I get it all set up and the problem persists. HOW?!?! Theres none of the same components! I even have a brand new DVD-R in there! It's like a brand new co... Read more

You could try uninstalling the printer software and both instances of the printer currently on your system. Reboot, then simply install it fresh. You could also try using System Restore to go back to a time before this issue started.

hi,can anyone tell what is minimum hardware requirement to instal windows xp so it will run with no problem. is p3 1GB with 128MB RAM ok ? i would like to usk as well if anyone know how to set up printer. i had a problem with it. sistem would not recognize printer. it looks like there is no support for USB 2.0 is it possible to make it work on comp. runing win98? if yes what od i need to set it up? i have used original priner drivers and software but sys. wouldnt recognize the printer. do i need some path? will it work on win xp ?

Answer:hardware requirement for wp+printer trouble

XP will run on your system, but unless you increase the memory to 512Mb minimum, it will crawl. In order to run a USB2 printer you will need to install a USB2 PCI card and associated drivers.

Just got a new HP F380 all-in-one unit today for $70 at CompUSA

I didn't bother with the HP CD because it's got bloatware I don't need/want so I downloaded the 30-someMB driver package from HP. Installed it and all went well except now I've got a safely remove hardware icon for my printer.

How can I get that to go away? I was able to set that icon to "always hide" but it's still there and it annoys me.

Answer:Safely remove hardware... for printer?

That's normal for USB printers. I've seen quite a few USB HP printers, and they all have components in the "Safely Remove Hardware" area. I'm not sure how it bothers someone, since it doesn't do anything, but it's normal.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm not that understanding of hardware requirements etc . . . I'm considering buying a Kodak Hero Wireless printer, to replace a cable-connected Epson Deskjet.
Please can you tell me whether my PC (HP Pavilion) is likely to be able to connect with the wireless printer i.e. does mine have the relevant 'network' card/configuration' . . . . I've noticed it has something called a 1394 network adaptor . . . is this what I need? . . . but also noticed from the information below that it says 'Network Drives - none detected' . . . does this mean I'm missing a network card in my PC that would be needed to connect wirelessly to the printer??? . . . . .

I found the Microsoft Article 298370 were this problem was addressed. However, I'm having no luck deleting the Registy Key for the printer as the instructions state. Per Microsoft's instructions right clicking the "Key" and "delete" only get me a box "Error Deleting Key". I also searched the forums here and found one suggestion that I tried. Disconnect the printer from the computer, remove it from System Hardware Settings, power down, reconnect the printer and restart. The Wizard found new hardware (printer) and loaded the driver. However, any reboot starts the "Found New Hardware" all over again, just as it has for quite some time now. Your help would be appreciated.Mark

Ga, I have been trying to install a Lexmark x4650 all in one (wi-fi) printer on an emachines computer running Vista Home Premium SP2. This printer has been successfully installed on 4 other computers on my home wireless network. The other computers have various operating systems, one is Win 7, two are XP Home, one is Vista. The last machine will cause the Lexmark software to almost get to completion then just display the "hour glass" (left it overnight one time).
During a manual attempt to install this printer using print manager, run as administrator, add printer, add network printer, I managed to get an error message when the add hardware stopped responding. The message indicated that the adhwr.exe (I think it's spelled right) stopped responding at the service spoolsv.exe : ss (I don't have the exact error message with me, but will post later) If I restart the service print spooler the install retries but stops responding again. I have tried to install a different printer on this machine with the same problem. I can see the printer on the network and can browse to it. I have un-installed wsd printer and any reference to all printers using device mngr and tried various methods to re install with the same result. Always pointing to spoolsv.exe. I did receive this error message a couple of times as well "Error 0x00000643 printer installation failed" then after acknowledging the message back to add printer not responding.

Hi all,
Every time I start my computer, a bubble appears with Found New Hardware in it, and refers to a printer. It does not say what make or model, just "printer". I have a Lexmark Z45 installed and working fine on this computer. Windows tries to install the new hardware, then tells me that it was not able to install it because the software was not found. (Only the Z45 shows up in my Printers and Faxes folder of Control Panel). I even put a checkmark in the box that says "Do not prompt me again to install this hardware" and it still prompts me each time I start the computer. I have uninstalled my Lexmark Z45 and that does not help. Last week I installed a printer which I had bought at a garage sale, on this computer, to make sure that it works ok. It is a Kodak PPM200 manufactured for Kodak by Lexmark. It worked fine and I have it installed now on another computer. However, after I used that printer on this computer, I could not access any printer because my Print Spooler would not start. Yesterday I did a repair install with my XP Home Edition and that corrected the spooler problem, but now I have this "New Hardware Found" problem. Anyone have suggestions?

Ok first things first.
My system is as follows.
asus k7v mobo, with and AMD K7 atholon 700Mhz cpu.
Vidieo card is a Vipper 2, Sound card is a sound blaster live platinum.
128 mb of pc100 ram.
Windows 98se.
direct x 8.0

The Problem is this i just got addicted to the game everquest well i had been chuging along without a hitch for 4 nights when i started to have serious problems, i could nolonger load the game it kept downloading the patches i had all ready so i did my home work and i found out i prob. had a virus well i checked and i did the W32.FUNLOVE.4099 virus (infects .OCX, .EXE ,.SCR files)
so i did the most drastic thing i could when norton 2000 could not rid my computer of the virus (norton itself got infected) i reformated my hard drive and reset up my computer with manufature cd drivers that came with my hardware. redownloaded the newest vidieo bios updates and drivers, direct x 8.0 and now my computer locks up hard if i try to do one of two things.
The most important is play everquest it locks up hard only the reset button works here.
Second is when i go into Start/settings/control panle/display
and than click on the settings tab and the advanced tab at the bottom. once i get into the advanced settings my computer locks up also but at least ctrl+alt+del works for reseting my computer so does the trusty reset button. LOL.
So my problem is not easy to answer as i think i have tried every thing i can think of and Nothing is working...

Happy New Year, folks!I've run into a problem which is so apparently unlikely that I'll have to ask you to trust me I'm not a laptop-thief...On a new Studio XPS running Win7 Pro, I've migrated my files in good order, and everything has seemed ok. As it happened, I was dumb enough to include an XP True Admin account (set in safe mode) in the migration, mainly because I forgot I had set one.It showed up on the new laptop's screen, but was no bother so I left it. Since the True Admin password didn't work, I didn't really have a choice anyway. Why it was scrambled, I don't know. The fun part: looking at my ordinary admin account in Win7, it looked like it was a standard one, not admin. The icon was labelled 'Administrator', albeit in Swedish, but the Control Panel account list claimed it wasn't. Thinking it was prudent to have a real admin account, I clicked 'Change account type' (loosely translated again), rebooted, and then found the icon was right, the Control Panel wasn't, and I could do basically squat with my new laptop without it asking for the old, migrated XP True Admin account password to ok it.Obviously this included going back to the nearest restore point, changing security levels, backing up current files etc. Not only can't I finish installing my other software, Win7 itself doesn't trust me to do much more than open the notepad....To my question: there are several softs out there claiming they can fi... Question: Stylus falls out

I just recently noticed that my stylus no longer stays put in the receptacle for it.  When I push it in, it clicks into place as usual, but it will slide back out if the laptop is held with that end facing down (it doesn't slide freely, it takes a little bit of shaking or wiggling - about as much as you might encounter by carrying it while walking), or you can easily pull it back out without first pushing it in to release it.  Pushing it in to release still causes it to pop out, though. The stylus is brand new (my previous one was replaced under warranty because the button broke and fell off).  I thought maybe the little retaining tabs on the clip end might be worn down, but they're not.  Anyone run into this, and is there a simple way to check to see whether the retaining mechanism inside the palm rest is really broken, or just out of alignment or something?I have depot support, but I use this for schoolwork, and my next class is starting up in a few days, so I really don't want to be without it when I go back to class.  As expensive as the stylus is to replace, I'd prefer to not have to worry about losing it constantly.

In a previous post under hardware I tried to detail the problems I'm having getting a HD installed.  Don't worry mister moderator I'm not making multiple posts on the same subject!!  So I reseated the video card, changed the cables on the hd and it started to boot up.  Said it was automatically configuring the IDE drive.  Then it pops up that I need to go into setup to set date and time.  Did that and checked boot sequence.  Long story short it essentially went back to after the Dell loading window it's a black screen with a blinking cursor.  Was getting two POST beeps, now none.  Did a diagnostics test, hd passed.  So I pretty much gave up on saving anything off the drive and went to install Windows 7 on it.  Halfway through it says "windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space.  Windows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS.  Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space.  The partition is of an unrecognized type."  It's a really old hd so I'm assuming it's FAT32 or whatever came before that.(if anything did).  There's a section where I can load drivers but I have not clue where I would get those or if they would even help.

Answer:Not sure this falls under software

I don't know how you're trying to install W7, but what you have to do is boot to the W7 DVD, choose the option to delete any existing partitions, then recreate the partition(s), format, and install. There are plenty of guides on the web that will walk you through a clean install of Windows 7.

My system is a Packard Bell PLT 2250 X running Windows 95B. I have had virtually no trouble with the machine. The other day, I was trying to migrate my files to a new computer, and as part of the process I mistakenly went into the device manager and clicked on "Disable in this hardware profile" under "Printer Port Properties." Since then, my computer will not talk to my printer and I have been trying to re-install the printer port.

I have gone thru the steps including removing the port, then re-installing as an LPT or ECP port. However, I am still getting the message: "This device has been disabled in the hardware. In order to use this device, you must re-enable the hardware. See your hardware documentation for details. (Code 29). "

All the drivers and everything else seems to be fine. However, my computer still won't talk to the printer. And in the Device Manager, the "Printer Port" symbol shows up with a yellow circle and an exclamation mark. What can I do to re-enable the hardware? I hope it doesn't include having to re-install Windows 95. Are there some sort of adjustments I have to make to the bios or cmos? How would I do that? Thank you.

PS - I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling it several times.

I'm trying to figure out what's needed to get the printer working all the time (some programs print, others not); also, when I look in Device Manager, it shows a) IEEE 1284.4. compatible printers - Deskjet F300 series (DOT4PRT), and b) IEEE 1284.4 devices - DeskJet F300 series (DOT4); while under "? Other Devices" it has yellow ?? for a listings of both DeskJet F300 series and DeskJet F300 Series Printer. I've deleted the printer a number of times and "Add New Printer" each time. When Windows Hardware Wizard excitedly shows up telling me what it's discovered, 1) if I connect to the www, nothing is found for installation, 2) since I don't have the install disk I click "continue", and 3) it decides the printer is not a plug-n-play routine ... so then I go with HPDoctor, run that, and it tells me to unplug from the USB port, runs its routines, tells me to plug the USB back in (I'm used to LPT1 for older printer connections, usually automatically defined by plug-n-play) so I do that (have tried both front and back USB ports);... my HP Pavilion is giving me fits and I'm inches from shoving it out the window! For weeks I've had printer probs....printer works but printer port is a problem. I've deleted and had PC reload port, which worked for one day, then quit again. Next time I tried to remove port and reload, the hardware wizard froze up......after several futile attempts I tried to use rescue disk to reload Windows so that it would work. (It would bring up hardware wizard and freeze.....nothing else was accessible and re=starting did nothing to help. I finally have access to the PC and the internet, etc. again, but still can't use the printer and the wizard isn't adding updates, drivers, etc. What can I do??

Answer:probs with add hardware wizard and printer port

Try entering the bios and changing the printer port mode to ECP or EPP.

I have a Kyocera FS-1020D laserprinter, connected via USB cable to USB001 (virtual printer port). Running XP-Pro/SP2 with all updates.

Every time I switch on the printer (or reboot while the printer is already switched on), the New Hardware Found wizard pops up and wants to re-install the drivers. As the installed drivers work perfectly, I just press 'Cancel' and the printer works fine.

How can I stop XP from finding this printer over and over again?

Answer:New Hardware Found for USB-printer every time I switch it on.

Select View/Show Hidden Devices from Device Manager.
There may be a "ghost" install of the device. (incorrect or failed install of the driver).

Hi Majorgeekers,

I'm having a problem installing my old HP laserjet 1100 on my desktop which has XP running it. It installs and works fine on my laptop which is also using XP. I've tried to downloading the drivers from HP but with no success. I've followed the trouble shooting and removed and added the drivers, etc.

I was wondering if it might be a hardware problem in that the bit where the printer plugs in is not working. The desktop is just about to loose its warrentee so i need to get this sorted. Is there a program that can tell if the printer port is working?

sorry if i'm not using correct language, but i simply don't know it.

Answer:testing hardware: can the printer port fail

Hi, just an update on my problem. I just added a Cheap USB Hub which has a printer port on it and the printer works that way which leads me further to believe that it is a hardware problem. but still, if anyone knows if there is a program that can test, then that would be cool.

again, Thanks

I installed a second printer a HP all in one printer. Every thing works fine but down in the taskbar I have the safe to remove hardware icon. Not sure why it is there not like I want to remove the printer. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

Answer:Safely Remove Hardware icon For my Printer?

The reason that ICON is there is to let you know that an external device has been plugged it to your computer via USB, so in order for you to remove the device without corrupting the operating system, Microsoft put a button there, anytime you want to remove the device you have right click on it and say "disable or remove" that's when operating system will stop using the device and it will be safe to remove it.

I believe it is a product of the service (Shell Hardware Detection, not positive) that coordinates the connections of usb devices. You can disable it, but then you'll have to enable it to connect another device.

It may be located in Group Policy (gpedit.msc), that allows you to turn off "System Tray Notification of Hardware Events"

Removable devices such as memory sticks can be set in two modes

"optimized for quick removal" and "optimized for performance"

if you choose the first option, this will disable write-caching on the disk & in windows so you can remove the device without having to go through the "safely remove dialog"

if you choose the second option, this will enable write-caching on the disk and in windows to improve performance, using this option requires you to go through the "safely remove dialog" to remove the device to ensure no data is lost when unplugged.

to change between these two modes, plug the device in and double click on the removable device icon that appears ... Read more

I bought a Dell Inspiron with Windows Vista, which did not have PowerPoint installed as I was anticipating, in the MS Office suite. Dell tech support responded by installing by remote control, the MS Office 'Blue Edition' but afterwards various Windows icons began to crash. I Googled on MS Office Blue Edition which revealed it was a pirate version (e.g. a forum here) even though Dell said it had installed it on many customers' PCs. So I uninstalled it and tried to do a Windows restore but the PC would not perform the Windows restore. I did a re-set to factory settings but then it would not initially recognise my modem. Eventually, after a series of re-sets, the PC connected to the internet.

A friend has warned me, the software may have corrupted my Registry. I downloaded a trial of Registry Mechanic which cited 144 problems, 13 of which the trial resolved but a long list of 'high priority' items remains. I am a bit wary, these Registry cleaners may panic you into assuming your Registry has serious problems, in order to buy their software. Anyway, I am wondering whether to buy one of these or put my foot down with Dell and insist the PC is replaced. Any thoughts?

There has also been a minor intermittent hardware problem: on putting the PC to sleep, it may not settle down with its blue light flashing (as it should), the PC becomes locked with no key able to make it do anything; I have to pull out the electric cable and re-start. If this is a c... Read more

Answer:Trying to escape 'Dell Hell': Windows Registry problem?

Do a full destructive recovery. (This will delete everything, including data.)
It reformats, recreates partitions then installs.

If not happy then, I would want a new puter.

Why do you need Powerpoint?
If it is just to look at files, MS has a free Powerpoint veiwer.

If you want a program, take a look at Open office Impress.

Ok fellas I don't know where to begin, I have been batteling this problem for the last 16 hours and tried everything that I can think of and still nothing, and I can't realy pinpoint the problem (new to Vista and not so tech savy to begin with) to know where I should be looking and what to search for on google.

A couple of months ago I purchased a brand new Laptop, Toshiba Satellite P200-144 ( Link with full specs) runing on Windows Vista Home Premium Edition 32bit (6.0, Build 6000).

I would have posted a DXDIAG Log file to further help you assist me, but for reasons explained below, I can't

I didn't have a single problem with it after this morning, now, I'm a heavy torrents user with a slow connection so my Laptop is on almost 24/7, but this morning I decided to reboot it just in case, haven't installed any new software or updates that required a reboot, and after that all the problems started.

First the Sidebar failed to load and gave an error message along the lines of "sidebar.ini file could not be found or is in use by another program" then when I tried launching Firefox (, it gave me an error message saying that "Firefox is already runing but not responding. to open a new window you must first close the existing Firefox process or restart your system"

so I did that, again, sidebar didn't load and the problem with FFX was still unsolved, so I opened up the Task Manager, no instances of firefox were runi... Read more

Question: i dunno

This seems pretty easy but, this is what it does during installation.Should the spaces be removed along with the semi-colon or is this a normal config.Just seems a little odd to me..
C:\Perl\bin\perl.exe;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\;C:\Python25;C:\progra~1\common~1\gtk\2.0\bin; ;C:\RUBY\BIN

Answer:i dunno

What you have is a Windows rendition of $PATH which delineates the various directories that are searched to find a command to be executed.

Spaces are ok for file names and directory names on Windows systems. So, I would say leave them as is.

To demonstrate, you can put an executable with a unique name, e.g. hello, in any one of the directories - i.e. separated by the ';' character in $PATH, then position your command window to your $HOME directory, and give the command:
$ hello
where hello is the executable name of the hello world program that just prints out the words: Hello, world!

I would then move the hello executable back to your home directory.

Unless your installation triggered an error message regarding $PATH - it is nothing to worry about.

Answer:Dunno what i did... =/

In fooling around in the BIOS any number of variables could have changed here.Remove all power sources.Remove the CMOS battery for 10 minutes.Turn on and off your power switch a few times with the above removed to discharge any resident charge.Replace the battery connect everything and re-boot.Did you say that you have 2 processors in that machine ? ?When posting specs it's helpful to include model #'s...

Dell Dimension C521 with XP Home loaded. Some time ago I installed a Linksys 2.4 GHz Wireless G PCI adapter with speed booster onto the motherboard, set it up properly and it worked fine.
Now I wish to connect a wired modem (Clearwire) for internet access, but XP is not recognizing the modem at all, only the wireless adapter
I have checked the ethernet connection on the computer, it's OK
No matter how many times I run the XP connection wizard, the modem is just not found
Did I somehow erase the program or driver that would recognize any modem ?
How do I get it back?
Thanks in advance !

Answer:dunno what I did, please help!

You should go to the homepage for the modem, and download the latest drivers. It sounds like you do not have the drivers installed.

Question: dunno what to do

I'm at a crossroads here. On one hand I really want to have my computer built VERY soon as I only have 2 more parts to order, and on the other han dI really want WIn Vista since it will be the next step in innovation and be 64 bit, and be required by most games coming out in Jan and after (I think)

problem is that Vista doesn't some out till end of Jan, and I want this comp done by end of Dec. I was thinking about getting Win XP media center to maybe hold me over but I don't know. In a month I would just be shelling out another $200 for Vista so I would have wasted so much money. What should I do!!

Answer:dunno what to do

just get xp and use it, and don't get vista for a couple of years. i have yet to hear of any games that say they will be vista only. the only thing vista has over xp gaming wise id dx10, and the 1st vid card t support it just came out and is over 600usd. so unless you have the nvidia 8800, you won't even be seeing dx10 in use, even if you get a game that uses it (i don't believe any are out yet). after using vista rc1 for a while, i just went back to xp. for me vista didn't give enouph tweeking power over my system to get the most speed for my gaming. the os just simply doesn't allow for 100% user control over the os like xp is. vista is just too concerned about protecting you and its self.
