Thinkpad Yoga S3 14 (20DM Model) Headphone jack is...

Question: Thinkpad Yoga S3 14 (20DM Model) Headphone jack is...

My headphone jack doesn't output to the right headphone when I plug it in all the way. If I ever so slightly pull out the headphone jack about an 1/8th of an inch to the next knob it will output to both left and right headphones but with a high pitched noise in the background. Should I submit my laptop for servicing? Is there a fix to this issue? I have tried multiple headphones (which I have tested on other devices, that work fine on them) and this issue still persists.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I own a Thinkpad Yoga 14 20DM and currently there is a high pitched noise through the headphone jack.  Whenever I listen to music or watch a movie, this noise comes on and is extremely annoying.  It only happens when I have headphones or speakers plugged into the laptop. I have sent in my laptop three times to the Repair depot.  The first time was for a touchscreen replacement, and the bottom plastic casing was cracking.  When I got it back, it had this annoying headphone jack issue. I have sent in the laptop twice after that and it still has not been fixed.  The system and audio board have been replaced.  I even sent in the headphones with it and they still couldn't figure it out. I do not know what to do now.  I'm pretty frustrated about the experience and probably won't buy a Lenovo product again.   Is there anything else I can do?

when i plug in high quality headphones i notice a very high frequency sound(tested many headphones and multiple OSes in my laptop), got the sound card changed throgh warranty, but the problem persists, ive read that maybe is an EMI interference(video card maybe), an engeneering problem. do you also experience those? is there anything i can do?my laptop model is 20DM000VUS

Answer:thinkpad yoga 14 headphone jack high frequency sound

I do too! However I noticed, oddly enough, that the phenomenon goes away when I plug the thing into AC power. Also, when I first upgraded to W10, there were some major changes to the sound capabilites - I could watch a YouTube video comfortably at maybe 4 in W8.1 while I had to crank it up past 80 in W10. After updating to W10v1511 this issue has since been fixed, and the volume of this hissing has also decreased.I tried a good many things too. Reinstalling the sound drivers, and all that.

Have a good day.

Got the laptop two days ago and I'm pretty much happy with it except for an extremely loud fan. I've tried updating BIOS and changing the power settings, but with no luck. Is this a normal issue on this model? Can it be fixed by software or will I have to change the fan? Appreciate any help I can get

Answer:Noisy fan on thinkpad yoga 14 20dm

Hi, welcome to the forum.

It is always hard to define on a forum how noisy is a fan, because everybody has its own perception of it.

If the TP Yoga fan it is not noisy for some time and it suddenly rise up, I think it can be interesting to monitor the temperature (Like with OpenHWMonitor) of the computer to see if it rise too, and also you can check (Ctrl+Alt+Del on the task admin) if there is any strange application that is running taking over the processor that makes it rise the temperature.

My other idea will be using "Lenovo Companion" to have your driver (especially the Thinkpad Power Driver) updated.

I have a Yoga 14" Ultrabook and it will shut itself off when you move it also (with lid open) hold it near the thinkpad logo on the right side.

I have taken the keyboad and bottom off and could not find any loose connections or damage.

Any ideas? Been searching internet with no luck. is it a SSD thing maybe it thinks it's being dropped?

Any help would be great

Lenovo ThinkPads has a feature where it would turn off the hard drive when it detects it's being dropped. But I don't think that's present on SSDs because they don't rely on mechanical platers. I'd suggest getting the unit repaired with Lenovo. Visit http://support.lenovo.com

I bought a new Thinkpad Yoga 14 (20DM/Broadwell). Gorgeous machine, but it refuses to wake from sleep on a keypress or click on the trackpad. It will wake up if I close and re-open it. I updated all of the drivers and the bios using Lenovo's utilities and Windows System Update. When that didn't work, I tried updating the Intel Integrated graphics drivers and GeForce drivers with the latest packages from Intel and NVIDIA, downgraded the Intel Management Engine to version 10, and disabled hybrid sleep. No dice. So I resorted to a clean re-install of Windows 10 from a USB key and updated all of the Lenovo drivers (again) using ThinkVantage System Update. "Allow this device to wake the computer" was and is checked in the Device Manager for both the keyboard and trackpad. Is there anything I can do to get it working? Only a couple days left to figure this out before my return period ends.

HiCan you please post the full model number of your Thinkpad Yoga 14? There had been some discussion about similar issues on this forums, but there is now final word about it yet. There is only one hint about updating to the latest Synaptics driver from Lenovo. (Synaptics UltraNav Driver (Version 18.1.27.30)  Fixed an issue that clickpad still has function after lid close.) But I don't know if your model is the one that use Synaptics mouse of Alps. There are also some other cases and maybe the following questions apply:- Do you use a Onelink dock port?- Do you use an external monitor?- Do you see the "Windows Touch" animation on your screen like when you press your finger when this happens? Regards

My speakers on my Yoga 2 Pro work fine.  Today, I plugged in headphones and only sound came through the right ear side.  I checked the headphones themselves with my phone and they worked fine.  I got earbuds out to test them.  The earbuds had sound only coming out on the left side.  Again, tested the earbuds with my phone and they worked fine.  It is the headphone jack in the Yoga Pro for sure.  Suggestions?

This is an odd one...

I have a Yoga 2 Pro, which has served me very well for over a year now.

But very recently I have encountered a problem now.

The computer thinks headphones are plugged in all the time now! No sound will come out of the speakers, despite all the windows 10 software telling me that there is no problem, and that the speakers are the only outlet. Even the sound controls recognises sound (the equaliser rise and fall).

Sound works perfectly when the headphones are plugged in. And even more recently, the notification that goes 'Information: you have just plugged/unplugged a device into the audio jack' is now alternating andspamming my laptop every once in a while, with sound coming in, and then turning off, with nothing in the jack!
Any advice would be welcomed, as I have trawled the internet to find a solution, yet have come up empty handed.

I'm not an owner of your model, but one thought came to mind.  Possibly the contacts inside the headphone port are sticking thus the machine thinks the headphones are always inserted.  Try repeatedly inserting and removing the headphone plug to see if the problem will clear.

So I've had a Lenovo Yoga 710-151KB for about half a year now and it's been pretty good so far, at least compared to my previous laptop. However, its headphone jack suddenly stopped working today. It was working fine before I went to bed last night, and I haven't downloaded anything or even visited any websites other than youtube between then and now. All of my drivers are updated and the headphones work fine with my phone. Also, the laptop seems to recognize when they're plugged in (sound stops coming out of the speakers), but it doesn't recognize what they are (ie the Sound application still lists them as "disconnected"). I tried plugging in my roommate's headphones too and the same thing happened. What should I do?

Hello! The headphone jack on my yoga worked yesterday, but not today.  When I plug headphones into the jack, the audio continues to play out of my yoga's internal speakers.  I did nothing to change the software of the computer since then, and the computer has not suffered any hardware damage like a drop, but it has been cold recently had I commute by bike with the laptop in my backback, so it will be exposed to 20 degree temperatures (F) for 15 mintues at a time. I updated the BIOS and audio drivers to no avail.  Is there a quick fix to this or do I need to send it in for repair? Thanks!

So whenever I plug in my headphones to my laptop while I'm watching a video a notification comes up telling me that I just plugged in my headphones. It's useless information and I know how to turn it off but the real problem is that when that message comes up my sound goes away for a few seconds. Even when I turn off the notification there's still a sound delay and I don't hear a thing for a few seconds. Is there any way to fix this? It's also the 13 inch model.

Hi Guys, For the Yoga 2 Pro owners out there, how much static do you have in your headphone jack?  I am loving everything about this laptop except for some noticeable static at low volumes and some backlight bleeding at the bottom of the screen.  I have tried two different headsets, my Senheiser HD 280 Pros and my Etymotic earbuds. I am curious how everyone elses behaves.  If this is normal I can probably live with it.  If I am the only one, I may get it replaced.  Build date 11/06/2013, purchased from Lenovo's website. Thanks,Dan

Answer:Yoga 2 Pro Static/Noise in Headphone Jack

Just wanted to add a little bit more detail to this. I just experienced the problem where you plug in your headphones but the audio stops playing. When I plugged the headphones in, there is no noise in the line. Perfectly clean. When I mute and unmute from the keyboard, the audio starts playing again, along with the static.I have the default format set to 24 bits, 192000 Hz. The static noise is present in all options but at 24 bits, 44100 Hz I also get a slight whistle. This plus the mute/unmute fix leads me to believe this is a software issue. If it were a ground issue, I would expect it to always be present?

This is probably an extremely nit-picky post but I was wondering if any other P50 owners are experiencing any "play" or wiggle room with their 3.5mm headphone jack when a headset is plugged in. I notice on mine that when I plug in my headphones, the connection itself is solid however, it seems that the outer casing of the jack between the outerbody of the laptop have space in between causing the casing to move in between.  So far I haven't seen any issue with the functionality of the jack itself but I'm a little concern that the jack might be loose somewhere inside which might cause it to fail prematurely.

Hello I recently got a Lenovo Yoga 211 Laptop/Tablet and am having problems with getting the laptop to detect the headphones/mic Once I plug the headphones (with built in mic) into the laptop, I can hear just fine. However, the mic fails to work. I was hoping to set the laptop to use the headphones for playback, and internal microphone for recording. However, I cannot find the headphones or the external microphone in the sound manager to do this. And once I plug in the headphones, the internal mic stops working entirely. I have a Thinkpad laptop that had this problem and I managed to use the Realtek Audio Manager to solve the problem. On the Thinkpad, I have it so that I can use the internal microphone even with the headphones plugged in. Is there a way to do that for the Yoga series? Any help would be appreciated! I have a Yoga 900 laptop. I have had it for less than a year and up to this point it has worked well. It no longer recognizes my headphones when I plug them into the headphone jack. When I have headphones plugged in, the sound still comes from the speakers. When I right click on the speaker icon and choose playback devices, it only have my speakers listed. I have used three different types of headphones, updated the drivers, and rebooted the computer numerous times. I have searched for hours online to figure out this problem, but have had no luck.

Just picked up my Yoga 2 Pro from best buy. Updated all drivers and BIOS, and the yellow screen issue does seem to be fixed. Thank you Lenovo!  Now, sometimes when I plug my headphones in, no sound will play on the headphones. Realtek recognizes that I plugged in headphones, but no sound will play through them. When I restart the computer it works fine.   Also, I have a USB 3.0 external HDD. I use this harddrive without any issues on my Lenovo Y400 using the USB 3.0 port.  The external HDD is a Rosewill RX-358 V2 Silver. There's no drivers or anything from the manufacturer and I did not need to install any drivers on my Y400.  After plugging it into the USB 3.0 port of the Yoga 2 Pro, the computer seems to recognize it, but doesn't install any drivers and under My PC (My Computer) an external drive does show up, but does not allow me to open or access it. After a few more tries the drive icon doesn't even show up nor does the drive spool up when I plug it in. However, plugging the external hdd into the USB 2.0 port works just fine. Windows instantly recognized the drive.  I have tried USB 2.0 flash drives with the USB 3.0 port so as far as I can tell the port is not broken.  Please help

Hello, A costumer brought an E530 laptop with a problem with the sound: when you plug in earphones/headphones in the jack on the right side nothing happens. The sound continues to be played by the computer speakers and nothing is heard on the earphones. Juggling a bit with the jack I was able to make it work if I don't insert the plug all the way in and move it a bit. So, I asked for a replacement part for that board. I got the new one today and same thing is happening: sound only goes out through speakers unless I jiggle a bit the plug. I know is not a Windows issue because same thing happens if I boot the computer with a Linux Live CD. Do you have any suggestions on what could be happening? Or I just got a faulty part and I need to request a replacement to Lenovo? I don't think that the issue is located within the systemboard seeing that moving the jack makes it work. Sortof...

Hi FranciscoPeralt,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Did you check with updating the BIOS once, could be issue with BIOS firmware?
Also run ThinkVantage system update utility and update all the latest drivers and application for your system to confirm it is not with the driver related issue.

Hope this helps.

Hi all, I noticed an issue with my Lenovo X1 Yoga 2nd that I didn't have with my older laptop. My monitor is connected through HDMI and has speakers. But sometimes I want to connect headphones to listen using them but the system doesn't switch to the laptop audio adapter automatically based on the trigger of inserting the headphone jack.It would be much more convinient if it did rather than needing to open Playback devices everytime to switch back and forth. My older laptop with Realtek adapter did that. I'm not sure if it's something that Windows did or the Audio driver did. Any ideas how can I get it to switch automatically?

I recently got a ThinkPad Edge 15 inch with the Intel processor. I hadn't had any problems until I tried my headphones when I was playing some music from iTunes. I noticed that the sound quite frequently skips and lags (i.e. the music doesn't play like it should). I did some investigating, so I went on YouTube and found that the sound in the videos did the same thing as with iTunes. Then, I got one of my other pairs of headphones and found that the same thing still happens. I also tried playing sound online and on iTunes through the speakers and it came out just fine. Essentially, can I stop this from happening, and if so, how. Otherwise, what do I do because I use headphones a lot and this will severely irritate me over time. Thanks in advance for your help!

I recently did a big update, which involved updating the BIOS (from version 1.91 to 1.93). Since then the speakers on the tablet, and headphones when attached, no longer produce sound. Sound works okay from the keyboard speakers. I've tried updating the driver (intel smart sound technology), as well as rolling back, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. Nothing has worked so far. My best guess is that the BIOS update is responsible, since the tablet speakers and headphones also no longer work in linux, but did before the update. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions for a fix to try before downgrading the bios would be highly appreciated.

Hey, so as the title says my Yoga 2 has some problems. Whenever I open or close my yoga it makes a snap/crack/pop sound, seems to be from the hinge. Anyone have any idea if the warranty would cover this? I just got this like the last week of August, so this is really upsetting. Also the headphone jack doesn't work at all, hasn't since the first time I tried it. It doesn't recognize that it is there (I've tried the device manager or whatnot, it is enabled just does not work). When I play music with the headphones in, the sound comes out of the speaker so it is super not working, ha. Any one have a solution?

I've had an unusual problem with my Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga headphone audio output on two separate occasions. About 4 months after I bought the laptop, I noticed that the Apple headphones, which I always used with this laptop, started putting out very low volume from the left earbud, but the right one sounded fine. I changed the L/R balance under speaker properties to increase volume from the L side, but it barely, if at all, increased it. I thought the headphones were the issue, so I replaced them with brand new Apple headphones of the same exact type. I used those in this laptop for about 5 months with no issues, until today I noticed decreased volume output in the L earbud again. Also, a few days ago I noticed that slightly twisting the audio jack in the port caused fluctuations in the audio output in only the L earbud for some reason. Also, increasing the L to R balance actually causes the R earbud volume to increase, with no change on the L side... I have uninstalled and updated to these drivers to no effect:Speakers (Conexant SmartAudio HD) | Driver Version: 6.3.9600.16384 | Driver Date: 8/22/2013Conexant SmartAudio HD |Driver Version: 8.65.9.0 | Driver Date: 10/18/2013 Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated!

I want to buy a ThinkPad Yoga for my wife, but I'm a bit confused by the product range and I can't find a definitive explanation. Has there been more than one model of the ThinkPad Yoga? I see models described as just "TP Yoga", some with "S1" and some with "S240"? More specifically, is there a difference between: http://www.lambda-tek.com/20CD000MUK-Lenovo-Len-TP-YOGA-i5-4200U-8GB-500GB-12-5-quot-M-TCH-W8-1P-1YR... and http://www.lambda-tek.com/20CD00AJUK-Lenovo-TP-S240-YOGA-CI5-4200U-500GB-8GB-12-5IN-TOUCH-W8-1P-UK~c... Thanks for any help!

Answer:Is there more than one model of ThinkPad Yoga? (or S1 vs. s240)

Hi,

I took a look at those links.  The only  thing that sticks out is that one has a conventional hard drive and the other has a hybrid drive with a built-in cache.  I think the model with the conventional drive also has a 16GB m.2 SSD as a separate cache.

The tccbook (Western Europe) might be of some help.  If I'm interpreting the ++ at the end of the model #'s, that's where the "UK" would go.  If that's the case, you can find further specs here:  ThinkPad Tablets and Convertibles (W.E.)

According to that, the differences are that the 20CD000M++ has a conventional HDD + a small cache SSD, where the 20CD00AJ++ has a hybrid drive.  The AJ also includes a Mini-HDMI to VGA Cable.

I admit to guessing a bit at this, so please double-check with the vendor if you can.

Does the Thinkpad S1 Yoga audio jack use the CTIA or OMTP standard for the tip, two rings and sleeve? That is, does the device expect microphone input on the second ring or on the sleeve?

Answer:3.5mm jack on Thinkpad S1 Yoga - CTIA or OMTP

+1: I wish the user/ref. manuals would fully specify all such details, including type of HDMI (2.0 is necessary for 4K @ 60Hz, supported by the 5500GPU), USB3.0, type of LCD panel, and particularly its backlight (PWM, freq?), wacom version, color gamut, MB chipset etc.Else one must waste time reverse engineering, prying open, begging on forae for just the basic tech info.

Hello everybody, a few days ago, i wanted yo buy my first Lenovo product... the new Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 12.5 model. But with all the bugs (crash, bluetooth, jumping cursor, external monitor resolution, empty recovery partition....) reported in this forum, i have a real doubt. I am a french IT professionnal since 15 years, and i've never read so many complaints.I was interested in LENOVO as their Thinkpads are (or maybe 'were') considered as professional and reliable computers. Could you give me your opinion about Thinkpad products and especially Thinkpad Yoga (2015) model ? Thanks a lot.

What are the differences on all the different model numbers on the Yoga S1 series. The one I'm looking at is a 20CDX001US, can't seem to find info on it other it's an i7, 8gb ram, 256ssd. Is it a refurbished or new? I noticed some people say they bought a S1 that is a 20CD, what other models are there with an i7?  Good or bad?

Hello all, I bought a Yoga 14 roughly a year ago and noticed that I am now having issues with charging. Whenever I plug in my charger I get the notification that it's plugged in but not charging and then switches to charging going back and forth from charging to not charging rapidly. In addition, the red indicator light on the Thinkpad logo on the laptop is blinking red. Also, my power plans keep changing from balanced to airplane and so forth. When I unplug the AC from the laptop it goes back to balanced and doesn't do it anymore. It only happens when I plug in the AC adapter. I've tried pressing the battery button on the bottom of the laptop, nothing changed. Ive tried changing wall sockets, nothing changed. any information on how to fix this charging issue is much appreciated!

Hello, Since the latest windows 10 update, where they added the mini apps along with the xbox app, the device video playback started to act funny, both online and local played videos. The video plays regularly in the beginning but then starts to slow down even the mouse slows down with it and the audio, sort of unstability where playback goes to normal and then slows down agian. If HDMI is plugged, I get a notification from action center that the intel HD family graphics driver had to restart, and I get it many times. which is really funny if you have a 8GB RAM and i7 processor and a 265gb SSD macine. I downloaded the newest intel HD graphics drivers from their website through Intel Driver Update Utility but couldn't install it due to some sort of incompatibility. They also advise that I'd better download drivers through the device manufacturer. So I then downloaded the original windows 7 graphics driver from lenovo website. I ran a full system scan by norton.Downloaded Lobit uninstaller and removed some apps.Downloaded CCleaner and removed a whole lot of cache!Ran AdwCleaner and also cleaned some files.I also did the steps within this link from lenovo forums https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/Yoga-2-Pro-HD-playback-freezes-other-appli...still NON helped! please note that the I bought the macine with Windows 8.1 pre-installed and I upgraded it to Windows 10 with no problems what so ever. Looking to add a microSD card to my ThinkPad X1 Yoga (2016 model) and was wondering what bandwidth the X1 Yoga's interface is capable of?  I see little point purchasing a 1800x (270MB/s) or 1000x (150MB/s) if the interface isn't capable of more than what a 633x microSD card can do 95MB/s? Do Lenovo publish this anywhere? Thank you, Pete

Hello, I am freaking out as I am typing this right now at 2 am as a couple of my key caps in the lower right hand corner just fell off the keyboard for no apparent reason. I tried putting them back on but the clips on the underside of the key caps seem to be broken. Is this covered under warranty? If so, will Lenovo send me a new keyboard or will I have to send the machine in? I really hope that Lenovo can send me one as I really need my machine and I am capable of replacing the keyboard on my own as I have serviced multiple ThinkPads in the past. Thanks in advance! Edit:I should mention that my warranty is good until January 12.

Hello,

I just purchased a new notebook, and I have a bit of a problem. When I plug headphones into the side headphone jack, the sound quality is downright terrible. Very shortly I noticed that it didn't sound as good/decent as my older notebook.

The speakers seem to sound fine, well you know - as good as laptops can sound.

Right now I have two notebooks side by side:
a friends Samsung Series 3 (NP300E5C), with Windows 8 (upgraded from W7) / Microsoft High Definition audio
my Toshiba L50 Windows 8 / Realteck High Definition

I dont have my older notebook anymore, but I do remember it sounding better. Comparing this Toshiba to the Samsung (both sitting on the desk side-by-side), the Toshiba sounds a little better through the speakers, but there is no comparison with the headphone - The Samsung is pretty decent while the Toshiba makes me cry.

Now granted, I'm not expecting a symphony, but if I cant solve this I'm going to have to sell the Toshiba.

I've tried uninstalling Realtek, but I couldn't get the sound to work.
Re-installing Realtek solved nothing

One thing I noticed, there is no 'headphone' icon in the device manager (Control Panel > Hardware & Sound > Sound / or simply right click the audio icon in the taskbar). Are the headphones not high definition or something?

Whenever I plug in my headphones into the jack, I no longer get a notification telling me my headphones are plugged in and Audio comes out of both the Headphones and the laptop speakers. This happend recently and didn't happen before. I have tried multiple headphones, all to the same effect. I am thinking this is a hardware issue. Does anybody have any solutions to fix?

Answer:Both Speakers and Headphone play sound when headphone is plugged into Jack

Dear AlvinLee

Welcome in lenovo community

Method A:
1.  Go to the Control Panel by right click the bottom left corner in "Desktop" mode.
2.  Search for "Realtek HD Audio Manager".
3.  Set the headphone as communication device (see image below).

Also please let me know if you can hear also the sound from the headphone itself

Thanks
Alaa

Hey there,I currently have a strange issue with my Yoga 14. OutlineThe keyboard shuts down when the OS loads. It works perfectly fine in the BIOS, diagnostic tools and my bootloader (grub), but shuts down immidiately when the OS starts. This issues is not related to a specific OS. The TrackPoint on the keyboard is not affected by this issue. An external usb-keyboard works fine. What I tried so far* Did a BIOS update* Removed the keyboard and re-connected it* Ran the diagnostics tool to see if there are any hints* Tried a Windows installation medium to rule out that my bootloader causes the issue* Tried Arch Linux to rule out that my Ubuntu installation causes the issue* Lots and lots of reading Additional Notes"Debugging" the low-level keyboard input on Linux shows that the keyboard is recognized, but there is absolutely nothing coming from it. No I am completely clueless on what else I can do. Does somebody have a clue on what might be the issue?

The instructions/video for removing and replacing the keyboard are quite good. However, I had the following issue when replacing the keyboard. The instructions say to be in tablet mode when sliding the keyboard back into position. Would this not mean that the keys should be in the recessed position when putting the keyboard back in? That way, when you swing the lid back to normal laptop use, the keys will move become "unrecessed" again. Without this, after I replace the keyboard, I find that the lid cannot be closed any longer. In other words the sequence I am experiencing is this:To remove keyboard, move laptop into tablet position. Keys get recessed. I remove the keyboard.I put the new keyboard in. Keys are not recessed at this stage. New keyboard goes in - can't close lid any longer. Any tricks to this that I am missing?

Hello Eight Forums.

My trouble is the audio output through headphones - background is louder than foreground (especially in music - I often cannot hear the vocals at all; movies however are mostly fine, for reasons unknown to me; but generally, the sound is always different in some way).

I only have one pair of headphones to test it with. However these always worked fine with previous machines, and still do work fine with my iPhone 4. Although they are surely not the case, I cannot with confidence say that if it were a loudspeaker instead things wouldn't have been different.

So this is either a software or a hardware issue.

Software

My computer (details at the bottom) came with a SoundBlaster X-Fi MB3 equalizer program and RealTek High Def Audio drivers. I've uninstalled SoundBlaster hoping it would fix the issue (I didn't need an extra program like that anyway) but alas to no avail. Updating the RealTek drivers did no good still.

The only thing I haven't touched is the ghostly NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (can it be the source of my trouble?) - I only first noticed it now when copy/pasting the Belarc data. I'll try and find out about it in the meanwhile.

Hardware

I wonder if it perhaps has something to do with my audio jack (laptop's brand new, but you can never know). I have what appears to be mic, headphone, S/PDIF and line in jacks... Is there a way to use the microphone or the line-in to test the headphones? To see if the headphone out is broken.

Any help appreci... Read more

Answer:Messed up headphone audio; want to check headphone jack

First, the "My System Specs" is where you fill in what you have.

Does the internal speakers on the laptop work? Is the audio OK on the internal speakers?

The SoundBlaster program(s) is a software enhancement to the basic audio chip (ReaklTek). Many PC's now come with some type of enhancement such as the SoundBlaster or in the case of HP PC's its "Beats Audio".

ASUS X42F, laptop with combined microphone in / headphone out jack,
how can i connect both a microphone & a headphone ?

Answer:Laptop with combined mic/headphone jack, how to connect both mic & headphone ?

I haven't used one that had the port as a combined unit but I would assume you would need a headphone set with mic that has combined wiring, such as sets used for cell phones and such. You can also purchase an adapter that will split the port into 2 ports for mic and headphones.
Hope that gives you an idea

Hello everyone, I am having an issue and hoping to see if someone can help. I just updated the BIOS (1.27), intel mangement engine, and optimus graphics card using the lenovo vantage app, I think everything went smoothly, but now the mouse cursor intermittently disappears after waking from a sleep state. Trackpoint, trackpad, button presses all don't work. Device manager says that it is working well. After installing and uninstalling the optimus graphics card, I think I have come to the conclusion that it is either the Alps driver or the recent BIOS update. I have installed multiple different Alps driver and all of them eventually result in the disappearance. Sometimes I would go 3-4 wakeups and it would be fine. Sometimes just 1 and the cursor would disappear. A poor workaround is to uninstall the Alps driver altogether, and use the generic touchpad driver. Obviously 2 finger scroll and multitouch commands do not work with this method, but there is no concern regarding lack of a mouse cursor after waking from sleep. I tried to rollback the BIOS update, but the recent update prevents rolling back to an older version. I am at a loss as to what to do. I could consider a fresh install of windows, but I feel that it wouldn't solve the problem. Anybody else have this issue? Thanks.

Well, I uninstalled my audio drivers and noticed that there was a red led shining from inside the 3.5mm headphone jack, which I assume is a mini optical audio (digital) combo 3.5mm audio (analog) jack, and I am figuring that it determins if there is an optical plug or not using drivers, which is why it turned on when I unistalled my audio drivers. I would like to know for sure before I go and buy a mini optical to toslink adpater cable so I can get better audio quality out (the digital interface does not suffer from the interference that the analog does right?). I did some research (research is a bit of an overstatement) and found no sites that mentioned it, so I have decided to turn to the forums. So, is this an optical jack combo? And, how will it work in terms of the drivers, will it just auto select? Thanks.

Answer:3.5 mm headphone jack won't fit in headphone/mic combo jack.

JSmith887Do I need an adapter for this?
No it should go in. We have been getting reports of tight jacks. Don't know if it's a quality control issue. Try some different ones and insert more firmly than normally.
If none will go in all the way, but you do hear the audio, I wouldn't be too concerned. If not getting audio (the selection popup does not appear) because it won't go in, then contact tech support or send it back.

Hello Forum, I hope I'm posting this in the right place...?

My device:G780 Notebook (M843RGE I3-2370M), Windows 7
Audio Driver: Conexant Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows 7 Version  8.54.32.50 (Smart Audio: 6.0.131.0)

Situation:My headphone jack is broken. Repair is too expensive. Instead, I want to redirect the audio signal to the microphone jack.

Problem:This seems not to be possible with my SmartAudio interface (Screenshot below). But I found a screenshot of exactly the function I need called "Jack Configuration" in the Help section (second screenshot below). It looks like I dont have the right system configuration (whatever that means, I'm not an IT/PC expert ...) to use this feature.

My question:
Is there any way I can reconfigure the audio jacks on my notebook? Do I need another Conexant Audio Driver software and if yes, which one?

I'm grateful for any helpful reaction!

TOMMYSS,
If you purchased complete care from Dell you can call into Dell Alienware Support at 1 (877) 330-9732. If you did not you can possibly take it back to the store you purchased it from to see if they can help you. You can also try removing it yourself. Just make sure that it is unplugged before attempting to remove it.

Alright, so here's the problem. I just recently got this computer and plugged it into the VGA port and the sound wouldn't work. I plugged Logitech External Speakers into it and the computer didn't even acknowledge that it was there. I plugged in Headphones to see if those worked and they didn't aswell. I asked the guy who I got the computer from and he said that it (sound) would work when plugged in using HDMI. So I did that and the sound does work, but only through the TV speakers. It still doesn't acknowledge the speakers or the headphone s when plugged in. So I wen t and grabbed some other speakers I had and tried those and It still didn't recognize the speaker. My question is: How Do I Get My Computer To Recognize My Speakers? Any help would be much appreiciated.

Hi,

I am using a Tiny Media Notebook PIII, 700, Windows 98 SE. The computer is about four years old, and by now the headphone jack, which I use as my sound out port, is about fryed. The contacts have deteriated, and I can not replace the jack, as it is connected to the motherboard. Thus, aside from opting for a usb sound out, such as taking up the Soundblaster MP3+ option, I was wondering if I could reprogram the way in which sound is connected to external devices such as headphones. There are three jacks on the front of my computer: the headphone jack, the microphone jack and er I think it is a line out jack - the later jack which I have never used. Is there anyway I can swop/substitute the connection via the headphone jack say for the microphone jack or line out jack. Is there anyway I could do this?

Answer:Substituting the headphone jack with the microphone jack

No, afraid not. Each jack has it's own circuitry which provides for the needed resistance and other parameters. What you could do, if you got to the mobo itself, is to physically replace the jack but that's a major pain on a laptop.

You can try two things, one is to use alcohol and a Q-Tip to thoroughly clean the jack, then use a small bit of steel wool to sand inside with and then again with the alcohol and two, if the jack's worn too big for a tight connection, is to go to Radio Shack and buy a plug in adapter for that size jack. Some come with a slightly oversized male end and then you could plug into the female end and have a tight connection.

I purchased  a  3.5mm 4 Position TRRS Male to 2x 3 Position TRS Female Headset Splitter Adapter for my hyperx cloud headphones to plug into my XPS 15, except the microphone isn't working when its plugged in.
When I plug them in a window comes up 'which device did you plug in?' Mic in, Line in, Dell Devices (lists random unknown devices to me), Headphones/headset - headphones medium, external speakers - external speakers medium. Are these details correct? should something about the microphone come up also? I go to sound options, recording and it's still using the microphone in the laptop.
I tested the headphones on another laptop without the jack and the microphone on the headset is working great. So it's either the splitter isn't doing it's job... or something to do with the laptop, any ideas?

Answer:XPS 15 9560 Headphone jack function as a mic jack?

Well for your case, the headSET option would be correct, since that means a device that offers both headphones (audio out) and a mic -- but note that you do apparently also have a Mic In option, though this would prevent audio output to the headphones.  However, if selecting the headset option isn't working, the issue with the TRRS "standard" is that it isn't a standard. The industry never agreed on which pins would be used for which connectors (Ground, Mic, Left Audio, Right Audio).  I think Samsung did it one way and Apple did it another, for example, and this of course causes interoperability issues.  So if choosing "headset" isn't working, it's probably because the XPS is expecting Option A and your splitter is wired for Option B.Theoretically, given that the audio chipset allows the pins to be dynamically assigned to various purposes depending on the device that's plugged in, it MIGHT be possible to have a "Headset" and "Headset (Alternate Mode)" device option in order to accommodate both TRRS configurations, but I seem to recall one of the TRRS implementation differences being where the Ground pin was placed, and maybe that pin can't be reassigned simply via software, which might explain the absence of such an option. Sorry!

I'd like to plug my speakers into the back speaker jack and headphones to the front jack. I can't do this and have both work at the same time. I have a cheapo Insight speaker with a volume puck that lets me plug a headphone jack but then the speakers turn off.

Seems to me with front panel and rear panel jacks I should be able to do this but so far, I'm stumped.

Any ideas?

Answer:How to configure headphone jack and speak jack together

Depends on the sound card you got. Realtek HD Audio Manager has a Device Advanced Settings option at top right, You can un-tick "Mute rear output ..." and see if it works.

Answer:Headphone jack to PC audio jack.

If the Recorder as a output jack, you need by one that as that size of jack, also check if it needs stereo or mono to a input jack that is stereo to fit the input of the Laptop i.e microphone jack socket

Hello,i've purchased a 4X10H04506 tablet dock for my Helix 2 20CG. Charging and HDMI on the docks works well, while none of the three usb 3.0 ports seems to work properly: no devices detected at all, and the led on my sandisk memory pen do not light, like there is no power on the usb ports, or are turned off.Don't know what to try: do I have to ask a refund for the dock, or maybe there is something I can check or should try?thank you for any help.PM

Question: Headphone Jack.

Hey there, I've so I think there must be a problem with my headphone jack, for some reason when I connect my headphone to the jack, I can always only hear on one side of the headphone. I can only hear on both sides when I apply some force to the jack, pushing it to the left and I would have to hold it to that position to get it working properly. I forgot since when I had this problem, but it has been like this for quite some time. and when I plug in the same set of headphones to my phone, it works just fine. I've tried this with 3 different headphones and a pair earphones and the problem still persists, so I'm assuiming it is the jack port that is faulty. I've been okay with having this problem because I would always usually just plug in both headphone and audio jacks in the cpu and insert a pen in between both the jacks, having the headphone jack pushed to the left all the time and making it always work. But just recenly I bought an external kareoke microphone which I planned on using to beatbox with, and when I record and playback, I can only hear from the left side of my headphone. Kinda ticks me off because I've spent a lot of money on my headphones, microphone and microphone jack converter but I still can't get the best out of my products. Plus, I would always switch from speakers to headphones, depending on whether I'm listening to music or gaming. What should I do? :/ (Sorry if I've sent any irrelevant information or my English is bad)

Hey guys,
So I bought a XPS 15 9560 16gig ram, with 512 ssd, i7 FHD screen, it arrived 5 days ago and I loved it, its simply the best laptop ever. However, I am met with a strange issue, my headphone jack is useless, not as in the widespread problem with it but its physically useless, every headphone I tried to plug in, is literally not pluging in, like it will go in and just fall out...
So out of curiousity I took some pictures of the headphone jack and put flashlight next to it to see what is going on, and this is what I got:
Is this suppose to be like this? Am I doing something wrong? or am I right for assuming the worst is that dell didn't physically put a headphone jack assembly in my laptop? Please help.
Thanks, oh and if it is the latter, I'm going to return it and never touch dell ever again, its quite insane how poor the QA is.
Jack

Answer:XPS 15 Headphone jack

Hard to tell from the picture, but can you see the actual plug in the opening?  Maybe it wasn't secured internally.

7. Communication Headphones***********************************************************************************************l. Failed Sense Pin in Laptops with HD Audio -- [this section does not apply to older laptops with AC97 audio -- see Section 3]Dell laptops with HD audio (all models since 2006) utilize switching technology in the headphone jack, which is somewhat complicated. In addition to the usual mechanical parts, the jack uses current & impedance-sensing circuitry to trigger software configuration and switching (to send the audio signal to the speakers). These techniques are called the "sense pin" in this article. When the "sense pin" fails then there is usually this combination of symptoms:    * Speakers don't work and are not muted or deselected    * Headphone jack does work    * Reinstalling audio driver does not help    * Audio test in Dell 32-bit Diagnostics passes, or the speakers work in PSA tests    * On models with 2 headphone jacks, one may be "checked" in the control panel as if in use    * Sometimes but not always, a very gentle wigg... Question: LED HeadPhone Jack

Dear All, Lenovo Y410, there have a red LED on Headphone jack,  but there is no microphone LED light, ? Thanks

Nicholas K.H.ChaiMalaysiaYM: ckhown

Answer:LED HeadPhone Jack

HiIf the red LED is inside the headphone socket then this is for optical out, i.e. connecting your laptop to a surround sound amplifier using an optical cable and the red LED light isn't for finding the connection in the dark but is for carrying digital data.   The microphone socket doesn't output digital audio so it has no LED light inside it.RegardsPhil

So I just got a Lenovo laptop yesterday for the very first time and I'm having some issues with it.  I stick my external speakers into it, and it does not recognize they are there.  The same goes for headphones.  I even tried plugging them in and going into Playback Devices, but nothing pops up.  What do I need to fix this?  I mean, the audio is good, but not even close to being as good with actual speakers plugged in, especially when listening to music. Oh, if it matters, it is a P500.

Question: Headphone Jack

Hey

I have a Acer TravelMate 3260. Its about a year or so old, and I am having problems with the headphone jack. For some programs it will work and others it will not. Sometimes I have to put the laptop to sleep and turn it back on before the headphones will work. Now, I have all my music on Windows Media Player, and the headphones will not work when I plug them in. I cant hear any of my music. But I can hear the sounds of the keyboard when I type, if that makes sense, the sound of the keys seems to be louder. I just want my headphones to work with windows media. There is nothing wrong with the headphones themself because they are new and work with everything else.

Please can some one help me!

Regards
Meagan

Question: Headphone Jack

I accidentally broke a headphone plug off in the jack of my Gateway NE56R31 laptop. I have tried several different methods of removing it. One method included superglue which I am pretty sure has now glued the piece in. I am looking for suggestions for removing the plug or disabling the jack so that I have sound on my computer. Would a pair of USB headphones work? I mostly only use headphones when using my laptop. Thank you.

Answer:Headphone Jack

With the plug superglued into the jack, now the only way to fix the issue is with a replacement system board for the laptop. I don't know that USB or Bluetooth headphones would provide sound.

Question: Headphone Jack??

I have a GW M6307 with Vista HP 32bit. The headphone jack has suddenly stopped working.
I have done a restore back to when it was working..uninstalled and reinstalled audio drivers without results. The IDT control panel indicates something else is plugged into the jack both for the mic and HP. I also reinstalled the MS audio drivers that came with the machine. I cannot find any default anywhere to change any setting regarding this. The laptop speakers work but the default to HP when plugged in does not. The speakers conitnue to play with no sound in the HP.There are no indications of a loose connection and the laptop sits on a desk most of the time. I realize this could be a hardware failure but it's hard to believe and I know the headphones work with other devices.
Does any know where a default setting exists or how to confirm a hardware failure??

Answer:Headphone Jack??

If the HP works on other devices ..then its Ok....
So must be your pc .......
Go to device manager ... uninstall the sound card driver ... REBOOT IMMEDIATELY..."Let your pc install the original driver back"...
(BTW..When its plugged in..try to wiggle the cable ..see if it make any connection.?)

I have an HP ze4145 (Laptop) and my headphone jack after 2 years has broken on me. Before it completely broke I would have to move the plug around inside the jack to try and get the right connection. Now that im completely missing a headphone jack I have two questions. First, is there any way i can disable the jack and force all of the audio to come out of my laptop speakers? and Second, Would i be able to buy a new jack or soundcard and how much would it cost on average? Thank you to anyone who can help.
