dBase III+ and Clipper

Question: dBase III+ and Clipper

Am I the only one still having to modify and keep running mid '80's software, yes, prior to windoze. The s/w is run daily in a very large corporate in a win2000 environment.

Does anyone have any info on what I could use to help transfer the code to something more modern? Of course, the user interface would have to be rewritten.

Yep, I'm very old too.

Preferred Solution: dBase III+ and Clipper

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I maintain some legacy programs written under dBase and compiled with Clipper.I have a couple of problems when running under some versions of Windows ? especially XPNormally the key-code for the left arrow key is identical to Ctrl-S> - both, when tested with a utitlity, are correctly shown as being ASC 19However, when running in a virtual DOS environment, while the left-arrow key works fine, the Ctrl-S> is ignored. I assume that Windows is intercepting the code for some other purpose.Using the Properties of the desktop shortcut to the DOS environment, I have tried various combinations of Compatibility (for Windows) and disabling the Windows Shortcut keys, but no still solution is found.Secondly: the programs frequently use the higher ASCII codes to build boxes on-screen. These generally work fine, but on occasion ? and I can find no reason for why this only happens sometimes ? the characters get mis-interpreted and produce other graphics characters.Would be grateful if anyone knows a solution ? especially to the key-code issue - or even just a pointer to someone who might know. Many thanksDr Philip Ramage

I want to ask about porting / converting ancient (20 years old!) dBase / Clipper source code and files to Modern Windows XP environment.

Should I use Codebase and re-compile the program for Microsoft C?

Is there any other better / simpler ways to port text only applications?

Thank you.

Answer:Porting dBase/Clipper Source Code And Files

Are you asking if there's any way of automatically converting the source code or you asking whether you you should rewrite the application. Codebase will not convert an XBase DOS program to a windows program. From what I understand Codebase is a library that allows you to manipulate XBase databases (DBase, Clipper, Paradox etc) with a windows language such as Visual Basic.

Question: Yankee Clipper III

I don't know why, but I can never seem to understand the software instructions. I can get stuff to YC by highlighting it and clicking Edit>Copy, just like usual before I had YC. (I am surprised that the instructions don't say how to get stuff to the Clipboard.) But then how do I paste the stuff, say, in a document I am composing in MS Word? If you don't mind, I need the instructions you would give to a kindergartener. Thanks, grandpaw

Answer:Yankee Clipper III

If it is a Windozs app all the Windoze shortcut keys should apply

Ctrl + C = Copy
Ctrl + X = Cut
Ctrl + V = Paste

I am running a clipper program on a novell network, and my client machines have been running on Windows 95/98.
I have been operating with the following line in the autoexec.bat :SET CLIPPER=E:00;F:250;SWAPPATH:'C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\'

I have a machine that is not running on Windows XP, and i have no idea where to add the above line, or how to make it work..
each time i try to run that program i get the following error "Unrecoverable Error 5311; cannot create VM swap file"
where do i set the variables in Windows XP?.

Answer:Need help with clipper program!

Go to C:\windows\system32, and edit Autoexec.NT and Config.NT there is where the environment variables and DOS configuration must be set, every Dos Box that is opened will use the values within this files.

Don´t expect to see them if you type the SET command, but they are initialized and the clipper program will read them.

does anyone know what happen to that "old" programming language, called clipper, like the old dbase language? what is clipper called today or computer programming language is the most similar to clipper?

Answer:ca-clipper 5.3b for dos/windows

OMG! My first job in the computer field! I was the install guy for a point of sale/accounting software for specialty gift shops, which was written in Clipper for DOS. Had to setup that program on point of sale computers for the front, and in the workstations in the office for the accounting part. They kept using the DOS version til past Win98 days, when I left that company. When I first got there they were using Artisoft LANtastic for the networking, on coax.

Pig of a DOS program, had to learn the art of fine tuning config.sys to get conventional memory up past 600.

The owners of the software company used to raise pit of them came to the office every day, sorta the mascot of the office. His name was Clipper.

Anyways, I'm not a programmer, I'm a networking guy, but from what I remember in the days before I left that company, the programmers there were having a hard time migrating their program to a native Windows backend.

I believe Clipper for DOS remained for DOS
and one of the projects designed to migrate it to Windows almost made it..

Question: Yankee Clipper fix

My YC has been dropping clippings. The YC website had me download a fix for that. Where I am now is that I have renamed to old YankClip.exe file to read YankClip.exeold, and now my YankClip[1] folder shows that old renamed file with a MS icon and the new file with a YC icon, just as was the case with the old file before I renamed it.

The YC instructions tell me to “Get the ZIP, stop the program, rename the old EXE, and finally copy the new file into the installation directory”. I wasn't sure at what point I was supposed to stop the program, I presume meaning the zip program, and how I was to do that, so what I did was to rename the old EXE first, and then download the new one without interrupting the program

Does what I did amount to “copying the new file into the installation directory"?

Since YC dropped clippings only sporadically, I am wanting to find out now if I did the fix right rather than just wait to see if the dropping problem happens again.

Thanks, grandpaw7

Answer:Yankee Clipper fix

From what I'm reading, when they say 'stop the program', that may have been the YC program, not the zip.

The way I read it is as this..

Download the zip. Stop the YC program from running. Rename the exe to old, either like what you have done, or as YankClip.old, then open the zip, and extract the new exe into the same folder.

Is that what you did?

Answer:BackDoor-CJO, AD-Clipper & downloader-OX

I was seeing McAfee return Downloader-OX and two other adware / virus threats. If you will look in the far right of the McAfee notification window (at least with McAfee Enterprise Edition) you will notice what applications are causing you the trouble.

I couldn't see anything in my startup files - either through regedit or Hijackthis! - I simply deleted the infected files (which turned out to be mplayer.exe and TELNET.EXE) and Windows XP restored them.

I'll let you know if I run across anything else, but I seem to be running clean. McAfee seemed to catch the infection before it spread, but everytime I ran Media Player the virus seemed to try and reactivate. Telnet.exe seemed to be automatically being called at points, but after deletion and recreation I haven't seen the problem return.

This issue must be new enough to not have very many posts. McAfee's VIL was no help whatsoever

CREATE (cPath + cString)

What could I be doing wrong? I am trying to create an empty table to store the TempTab structure info in a new work area.

I do not know clipper, but I would guess you need to caste them to be the same, or the same as CREATE supports.

Also, a quick google makes me think you need to use dircreate to create a folder...

After getting my new XP computer, I downloaded the clipboard utility Yankee Clipper, which I used a lot on my older computer. However, I found out I downloaded the wrong version rather than the one I wanted and was used to. So I uninstalled it yesterday morning and instead installed the version I wanted. Then, I got to messing around trying to get YC on my startup and Quick Launch. Somehow, I messed things up so that YC wouldn't work. So I attempted to uninstall this second version of YC (the one I wanted). Add/Remove went through the usual procedure as though the uninstall worked fine. But it didn't. YC was no longer in Add/Remove, but it was big as life everywhere else although it still worked poorly. Then, I used System Restore to go back to yesterday morning before I uninstalled the version I didn't want. I wanted to start all over. So I tried to uninstall that version so I could newly install the good version. But now the bad version won't uninstall. When I try to do that via Add/Remove, I get a Wise Uninstall error saying "Could not open INSTALL.LOG file.

I have no idea what to do now. For one thing, I wonder if the error message means that the Add/Remove program now won't work for anything, or if that error message just applied to YC. I've thought about downloading free uninstaller but I prefer not to do anything till I can get some expert input.

Thank, grandpaw

I am using Yankee Clipper III (YC3) under Win7 64bit. Occasionally it looses the boilerplates and I can't get them back other than by recreating them. Under Win XP, according to what I have been able to find, the boilerplates are kept in Program Files/YCIII. That doesn't seem to the the case for Win 7. I have used Yankee Clipper for a number of years now and it has been a great deal of help to me, largely because of its simplicity. But after I got XP the YC icon on my System Tray started to disappear, not always, but when it did I couldn't find a way to get the YC window to display. When I would click on the YC icon on my desktop or go to YC in Windows Explorer, I would get a message that YC was already running and to look at the System Tray (where the YC icon was no longer there).

YC told me that the problem must have something to do with XP, but couldn't say what. YC suggested that I click Ctrl/Alt/Y. That sometimes brought up the YC screen but not always. It didn't restore the icon to the System Tray.

I wonder if anyone has a suggestion as to what might be the problem and how I can solve it.

Answer:Disappearing Yankee Clipper icon

Perhaps it's not in your startup and should be (and used to be)?

Hit Start-->Run and type msconfig and hit enter.
Go to the Startup tab.
Do you see anything that resembles Yankee Clipper?
If you do and it is NOT checked, check it.
If you don't, reinstall Yankee Clipper. See if you're asked if you want it to start when Windows starts (or to put an icon in the system tray) and say "yes".

Question: Dbase to Access

Is there away to move the queries and reports from a dbase program to the access program so that they do not have to be recreated?

Answer:Dbase to Access

Access is a database program, but it depends on which program...

For tables, the quick and dirty, if available to you, is to export the entire table in a delimited file (comma, space, tab, etc), you can then easily import into Access.

If you can view your existing queries in a SQL format, you can cut them and paste them into a new Access query by using the SQL view instead of the default Design View (please note that on some intricate SQL queries, you won't be able to view the query in Design View at all...limitation of the type of graphical interface Access uses..

I think you may just be sol on the reports, though....maybe someone else has an idea on this....?

(Before anyone asks, the only reason I keep upgrading from previous versions of dBASE and Windows is because I sell my programs and need keep them up to date with the latest Windows.)I'm conscious that one of these days I'm going to have to make the jump to object-oriented programming, rather than my DOS-based methods, because each new release of dBASE drops support for one or two commands; but I can hardly understand one word of the dBASE user "guides".So, the point of this posting is, can anyone recommend a simple first-principles guide to the current best-practice programming techniques for dBASE PLUS?

I have a Dbase (Database Program)that runs on my old W3.11 PC. How do I go about installing Dbase on my W98 PC, as I have some useful data I wish to reference before the old PC dies. Thanks David

Answer:Run DBase Version 4 (DOS) on W98 PC

first of all, copy the files into a new folder in C: , preferably dbase,(it will make it easier to find, also keep it less then 8 letters long). If the DBASE is a true dos based utility then you would need to Shutdown and restart in DOS, then at the prompt type dir +press enterthen typecd dbase +press enter (or whatever you have called the new folder)look for the install or setup file, type install or setup, hopefully this will install the app and you should then be able to run it by typing its name,if it doesnt have an install or setup but has a file with a exe extension then try typing that eg. dbase.exe, just type dbase +press enterHope this helpsps i presume you have tried it in windows 98, if not then try it in windows first.good luck

Question: Dbase to text

Quick sketch of the situation: we have a 3rd party stock management application that is written in Foxpro and stores its data in DBF files. One of our customers has asked me if we can provide an hourly update of our stock levels in the form of an .TXT file that has to be FTP’ed to the server of our customer.

I’m trying to find a solution to automate this process.
Technically, it means I have to find a solution to read a DBF file and export a limited number of fields to a comma delimited text file. I can’t export the entire DBF file, because it contains information that our customer is not allowed to know (our purchase price, our profit margin, etc). The whole thing should run without user interaction on a MS Small Business Server. I can’t afford to run the program manually every hour.

Any idea how this could be accomplished? I would like to keep the solution as simple as possible of course.

Will dBase III operate on Windows XP?

Answer:dBase III Compatibility

ram15 said:

Will dBase III operate on Windows XP?Click to expand...

I'm responding to this because nobody else has. I've not tried using dBIII files directly with XP, but my guess is it will work. The reason I think it will is that virtually all DB programs, including those that only run in XP, will read and export to dBIII or -IV format. Those formats are the defacto universal format for database files.

To illustrate, I write DB apps in MS Access, which will read and export to dbIII or IV format. I also maintain backup records for a small company that still uses (can you believe?!) PFS File, a 1984 DOS program. It runs perfectly under XP, and exports to dbIII format, which I use frequently to bring the records into Access to do some serious report formatting.

Has anyone here been able to run dbase III under Windows 7?

I want to continue using this program and am now dual booting to an XP setup in order to do it.

I was not able to get it to run in the Windows 7 virtual machine set up with XP.

Any suggestions or is this an impossible task?

Answer:dBase III under Windows 7?

I got it running under the virtual machine in Windows 7 and in Windows 98 compatibility mode. There is a problem now that I have not solved so far but will keep trying. It is that the screen is very small and so far, I cannot correct it by running it "maximized" or in the different screen resolutions.

If I can get this to run in a full screen mode, I will leave the answer here.

Hi, tig. I'm thinking CRW is just crystal reports writer. Read and follow the directions under Periodic Hard Drive Maintenance in Article III for troubleshooting any of these types of errors. Once that's done, if the problem still remains, you move on to pinpointing an issue specific with crystal reports. I'm a novice Access/database user with probably a novice problem. I am trying to export from Access to dBASE. I have followed the instructions for exporting data, searched the help function, the archives in this forum, and my books on Access and have not found the answer to my problem. When I try to save the query to a dBase file, I get a message that reads "field will not fit in record" I have the fields set up in the Access table exactly as the dBase user (my boss) described them. I have checked the fields in each record to see if the data is the correct size. The largest field is 34 and that is how my boss has it set up in his dBase tables. I have no idea how to proceed, and hope someone can help me. Thank you,

I have an okidata printer connected to an emachine computer running windows xp pro but I use dbase programs. The problem is that when the program says print, nothing prints. The printer prints windows programs and when the printer is hooked to another computer it will print dbase programs. Is this an "emachine"? If so, can it be corrected?

I usually pick up on this kind of thing quickly, but SQL Server 2008 R2 is anything but simple.

The first issue I'm running up against is that I'm trying to transfer a database from our old server, running SQL Server Express 2005, to our new server running SQL Server 2008 R2. I did a simple backup and restore using SQL Management Studio. Now, I can see the database using SMS on the new server, but it doesn't show up in the SQL Configuration Manager. As such, I don't think the database is actually 'running' or being advertised. My experience with the full-blown SQL Server software is limited, so I'm not sure what I'm missing.

dbase 3+ I run it now on Windows 98 but I would like to run it on Vista Home Premium

Answer:Can Dbase 3+ run on Vista Home Premuim?

It should run as Vista 32bit still supports legacy DOS applications in a textual window. However Vista doesn't allow full screen for DOS programs. If you need full screen mode you have to run DBase inside a virtual machine as MS Virtual PC under a guest OS as Win 98, MS DOS or FreeDOS.

For several years now I've been distributing a program written and compiled using various versions of dBASE. Until recently I was on dB2K running under Windows 98SE, and my program would run under anything from Win 3.1 to 2000.Now I've upgraded to Win XP and dBASE PLUS. My program runs okay and compiles okay, and appears to install okay on my customers' machines. But when they try to run it they get an error message "error loading idapi32.dll".The strange thing is the idapi32.dll is a file associated with dB2K and, so far as I can see, is not part of dBASE PLUS or its runtime engine. Any ideas, please?

Answer:dBASE PLUS "error loading IDAPI32.DLL"

Is there a way to link an Access 2002 dbase file to a
contact listing in Outlook 2002? I have extracted names,
addresses and e-mail addresses from an Access dbase file and imported them into Outlook contacts under Public Folders.
If the Access file is updated with this information,
the user is requesting the contacts be updated as well in
Outlook. Just looking for an automated way to do this.

Work has just had its first Windows 8 machine delivered and I am to test.

My first job is to test whether our effective but ancient MS Access with VBA frontend database works with it.

At first glance it doesn't, none of the OCX (32bit) files will register through syswow64 using the commands.

I have tried using 'Whosin' a free internet Database which seems to have a built in registration screen for 3 of the OCX files but I still don't know if they have registered.

Can anybody suggest anything? I am home now but can post the files which need registering when I get to work in the morning.

Any clues, help or preferably solutions will be much appreciated (by the way I have read an article saying Windows 8 doesn't have a registry which I find hard to believe).

Thanks for reading

When I attempt to import DBase III data into Access 2000, I get the error message: "The search key was not found in any record". What does this mean, and what do I do to get that data in? It is a .dbf file. It has a .dbt file associated, by the way... should that come in automatically?

Answer:Import DBase III date to Access 2000 error

Having similar problem with a DBase file. It is linked into Access 2000 however when we run any form of query against the table we get the "Search key was not found in any record" message.

We have tried the same table in other data center locations and do not have the problem so it seams to be specific to this one file. If you have any info it would be welcomed. If we find any answers to this we will pass them on.

I have been reworking a small existing medical research database. In expanding the data fields, I've run into several 'major' problems. Some I have resolved and some proved to be too complex for my limited knowledge. Now I question whether the original dbase design is adequate for the task?

The basis of the study is to follow each patient through cardiac rehab (pre and post) and then to track each patient for 5 years of follow-up (one time per year).

This adds up to 7 visits per patient, times each of the factors (apprx 50). This is where I have the problem. The list of items tracked is extensive, lab values, medications (i.e. increased, reduced), vital signs, level of compliance, cholesterol levels, positive risk factors (i.e. diabetic, hypertensive) etc.

The original dbase tracked the patients for 3 years, and for fewer factors. It worked well. The data entry form was on one page. It was set up as a relational dbase one-to-many (each patient's basic info-to-all variables).

My problem began as I extended each factor by two years, and then added additional subjects for the five years... I ran into the "255" max fields error.

I have a table of basic patient info, name, age, doctor, start date of cardiac rehab, etc. I have rebuilt the dbase from scratch, several times. I broke out each field group (i.e. blood pressure, cholesterol, medications) into a table of its own. I have tried splitting the entry data form into several, I would '... Read more

Have a new 64bit server running Win2k3 enterprise edition SP1 64bit and loaded Office Pro 2003. Our web people use ASP to get the backend system working

All seems ok until we apply the new IP and then try to login through the webpage which denies access to the dbase and secure area. Our web people say that our 64 bit win2k3 and Access 2003 are wrong together!! MS tell me win2k3 64bit & Access 2003 are good together

Can someone help explain where the incompatibility comes in since multiple web searches cannot locate anyone with this problem and so I cannot find a fix for them. They want me to now buy the std 32 bit OS (lol)

Someone please help with a fix (please explain simply as I'm neither a web, ASP, Access etc person)

Thanks, JB

About 6 months ago I upgraded from M$ Office Pro 2002 to M$ Office Home & Business 2010.
Just after Christmas, one of my ex-Staff contacted me for details of her employment with me (between 1988 and 2005) and a letter of Reference.
Now I have the old Staff Database in my Archives, but cannot access it as Home and Business does not include Access. I no longer have the old Office (2002) Disks.
Is there any free software that I can use to View that old Access dBase? I do not need to amend it in any way.

Answer:Viewing an Access dBase without Access
