Question: Writing to a txt file inside a jar file

I have a jar file that contains a Java class and a txt file. My program can read from the txt file (using URL) but does anyone know how I can write to the txt file? I need it to overwrite what is already in there each time. Thanks

Preferred Solution: Writing to a txt file inside a jar file

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, We have gone to the website
http://www.salonrenovationmaisonneuve.com/en/exposants
and download the file to open Inside of IE. Once the file is open, none of the links either e-mail or web site works. However, if we open the same file Inside of Google Chrome, the links work. So, we want to know if we are missing something in IE or a plugin.
The PDF file opens with no problem but the links are not enabled. The file works in an Apple Machine and Google Chrome. However, if we download the file physically inside of the computer and then open the file with Adobe Reader, the links all work! Any ideas
how to solve this issue? Thanks Miguel Moreno

My question is a security question.
If someone has a file on his/her computer that contains personal/secure information, for example a text file that contains passwords and account numbers, or an audio recording of a conversation where account numbers and passwords were spoken out loud...  Is it possible for fragments of the secure file to end up getting stuck inside of another file or group of files on the same pc...making it possible for someone to reconstruct the secure file from the fragmented pieces and/or view its original contents?  Or could it be possible even for the entire secure file to somehow end up inside of another larger file on the same computer...making it easy for someone to view the secure information....(by the way I only used a text file or an audio file as an example...it could be any file containing secure data)...My simplified concern is this...If you have a file that contains information that you want to keep secure...is there anyway that pieces of this file, if not the whole file it self, could end up inside of another file or a group of files on the same computer that the file containing the secure information was created on?...thus making it a security risk to even share mp3s on a computer that ever had any secure information on it...since maybe there'd be a change ur credit card numbers and passwords might somehow end up in one of those mp3s that ur sharing in a peer to peer file sharing program online.....or do things not work like tha... Answer:Can a File somehow end up inside of another file/files

It all depends on the program you are using to access the files. For example, Windows (starting from XP) creates a hidden file thumbs.db that contains thumbnails of all the images inside a folder. If you delete the original pictures through some other program or command line, and do not open the folder in Windows Explorer, this file still stays there. If you share the folder, this file gets shared too. Your information gets leaked.

If you use a computer for banking online or shopping online (any kind of financial transaction), then do not ever use that computer for P2P file sharing.

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone could possibly walk me through or simply tell me how I would go about storing information from a simple console based C++ program into a file on my folder?

Basically I want to be able to type, for example... a persons name when prompted and have it create and save the file to somewhere on the computer, then remember where it saved it so later on I can open run my program again and it will still have the name I earlier put in.

I believe I have a hunch that you need to use ofstream or istream, all that good stuff... but not so sure where to begin. I've been looking around for a bit now, but still confused.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:C++ Writing to file help plz!

Here are a few stream examples mixed together for you to play with.
Code:

#include <iostream>
#include <stdexcept>
#include <string>
#include <fstream>
using namespace std;

void checkForFile(const string& file) {
ifstream in(file.c_str());
if (!in) {
cout << "Error reading " << file << "\n";
cout << "Will try to create it\n";
ofstream out(file.c_str());
if (out) {
return;
}
throw runtime_error("Error creating " + file);
}
}

string readFile(const string& file) {
checkForFile(file);
ifstream in(file.c_str());
if (!in) {
throw runtime_error("Error reading " + file);
}
string ret;
for (string s; getline(in, s);) {
ret += s;
if (!in.eof()) {
ret += "\n";
}
}
return ret;
}

void writeFile(const string& file, const string& data) {
ofstream out(file.c_str());
if (!out) {
throw runtime_error("Error writing " + file);
}
out << data;
}

int main() {
const string file("zipbam.ini");
const string data = readFile(file);

} else {

Answer:need help writing a .bat file

I responded to your thread in the software forum. It's not what you want to hear, but it's some info, at least. Take a look and if you have any other questions about it, post in this thread or the other one. I can give you the raw batch file that will do everything that you want except close MP...that's why another player might be worth looking into.

Freaky!

I got hit hard with a million trojans. I was stupid and put some unknown program and ran it. My virus software caught some and the spyware checker some others. I even went through some serious cleaning with hijackthis and such.

It seems to be very clean according to many virus checkers now.

Only problem, two files keep showing up in the root:

bot.log
ShellExtensionLog.txt

The bot log looks like it is doing some bad things and I know it came from some nasty crack software. Here is what is in the bot.log file:

Hey guys, is there a way to replace a line in the middle of a text file without bothering everything else?

E.g.

Lets say I want to change 'Robert' to 'Bob'. Should I simply rewrite the entire file? Or can I just change that one line?

Question: Writing Batch File

Hello Everyone,        I am currently just learning how to write batch files. I currently am working on a Windows XP machine, w/SP2 and a Pentium R dual Processor. I would like to write a batch file For Word Excel and Powerpoint that changes the default save location of My Documents to a folder on the root of C: called "Office Documents".  I'd like it to be in the registry settings. I know that it has to be done in notepad but where do I start??? HELP!!

Answer:Writing Batch File

If this is for just one computer, I would go to the options for the word, excel, etc and specify the default save location. Batches are intended for repetitious uses like a fleet of 60 laptops that you want all the same etc. On a single system it can be done in batch but far easier to just use the GUI drop down interface in  MS Office Apps to specify the default save location as where you want it to be. Such as in Office 2000 Word has this feature in Tools --> Options --> File Locations --> select documents highlighted --> select modify--> then specify the path such as C:\OfficeDocumentsand Excel 2000 has it in Tools-->Options-->General--> put path of C:\OfficeDocuments in the Default file location field.and Powerpoint 2000 has it in Tools-->Options-->Save--> then place C:\OfficeDocuments in the default file location field and select OK.This all could be handled through a batch, but WARNING it will write to your registry and if it malfunctions it could crash windows. Using the built in user interface to specify for this single computer need would be far safer for anyone new to batch.Before learning how to edit registry keys with a batch, I would first gain a grasp of batch programming...start with the basics of the ECHO OFF and ECHO ON and @echo. Hello World and start playing with setting variables and passing values and writing to files and manipluating data through statements that test for conditions and if this do that etc. Then once y... Hi All
Can anyone help me get a simple batch file to work please?
I'm trying to write a file that will be integrated with Windows Scheduler to auto reconnect my VPN when the PC
comes out of sleep mode. For some reason, Windows always disconnects the VPN when entering sleep/hibernate.
Have done a lot of "Googling" on this and found the following . .
--Here is the suggested batch file script--
rasdial.exe yourvpnconnectioname username password
I've written this but cannot get it to work. The Command Window flashes up, but nothing happens. It seems straightfoward - but not for me!
If anyone knows a better way of getting the VPN to auto reconnect after coming out of sleep I would be grateful. It would also be beneficial
if it auto reconnects at boot time to save having to log in separately.
Many Thanks

Hi: I have a batch file that goes out and does an xcopy/compare so that only the changed files/folders are copied from a network share to my external HDD backup (E:\). These are not encrypted nor does the boss want them to be so we are not using the backup software that came with the drive. Now I have a need for restores of daily data so I created 5 folders on the E:\ (MONDAY, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY) all data in them is the same from an certain date I ran the bat file. Now I want to design a single batch file the will ask file/folder to xcopy to name (MONDAY, TUESDAY, etc) and then do the xcopy/compare to that. Is this possible. Or better yet, for it to look at the day of the week on the PC and automatically run for that weekday, I know this will involve some writing to convert dates to simple MONDAY or TUESDAY etc. Thanks so much.

I have Windows XP Home.
I began trying out a couple of dual-pane file managers (2xExplorer and PowerDesk) to see if I like them better than Windows Explorer.
The best I can do with respect to writing to a CD is to copy file(s) to the "CD Burning" folder (staging area).
I still have to use Windows Explorer to start up the CD Writing Wizard.
These programs do offer a Command Prompt feature.
This made me wonder if there might be some command that I could use to write files from the staging area to the CD, without going through Windows Explorer.
Does anyone know of a command like this?

I use COMPUPIC imaging software which allows me to create a slide show where I can change the order of the individual JPEG files in a directory. I can then copy these files into a new directory from within COMPUPIC and it retains the new ordering, not the original alphabetic ordering. So far everything is great. However when I then try to copy these files to a CD they are reordered alphabeticaly. I'm using Windows XP and Roxia CD Creator 5 Basic. This is a problem since I would like to use the reordered file on my CD player to create a slide show in the order I specified in my Compupic imaging software.

The first thing I would do is forget the whole idea, you are heading for disaster.My Programmes is a special folder and as such cannot be moved. Some can, but this is one that cannot. There is undoubtedly a lot of stuff in my programmes the needn't be there and can be moved to another folder. However there will also be a lot of stuff that needs to be there and moving the folder will cause Windows to fail.Stuart

Hello,

Im not quite sure if this is possible , but heres what im trying to do. I made a special batch file for a game that I have because when I try to run it with a few programs running it gives me problems. The game is KOTOR and the programs that are giving me trouble are YzDock and the AVG resident sheild.

I have created this batch file so it will kill these two processes before running the game...

net stop "AVG6 Service"
taskkill.exe YzDock.exe
START /HIGH SWKOTOR.exe

Now what I am attempting to do is run my game using the settings above , but after I exit out of the game I want the batch file to go and restart the two processes that I previouslly killed , but only after I exit out of the game.

Is this even possible? Im using XP Home if it matters. Any help would be appricated. Cheers.

Welcome to Seven Forums Miss Peach. In my reading this appears to be a common problem with Kaspersky. The easiest fix I see people having success with is to temporally disable UAC, and make sure Windows Defender is disabled (some also say to disable firewall while installing). See if this helps you.

User Account Control - UAC - Change Notification Settings

Windows Defender - Turn On or Off

Hiya,

OK, so I have File History setup just fine and dandy to write directories to my NAS as a backup.
I've often struggled to get the hourly run to kick in and its immensely frustrating. Sometimes it has worked - but mostly not at all.

The mapping to the NAS is correct and if I manually run this it writes everything OK and completes.
If I leave the PC to auto write the files however it does nothing. See the pic above. The last manual run of this was 16th. Nothing yesterday - and nothing today. The PC has been running for several hours since the 16th, and the NAS mapping has been fine (network drives were mapped fine) so nothing to interrupt the automated run.

Any help appreciated.

I have a problem when saving files in Windows 7. say I have a png with the name "alduin & khajiit 1.png" and I highlight it to grab the file name but I change the "1" to a "2" for a file name "alduin & Khajiit 2.png" in the file name field, Windows 7 still asks if I want to overwrite it despite the different file name. if I say yes it overwrites the file despite the different file name but still has "alduin & Khajiit 2.png" as a file name and "alduin & khajiit 1.png" is gone (overwritten). how do I fix this?

I recently purchased an SSD for my computer, an ADATA 120GB S511. The SSD had been previously used and apparently was in working condition. I installed Windows 7 Professional x64 on my SSD to use it as a boot drive, rather than my standard HDD which I formatted as NTFS. Since then, I have been experiencing troubles while writing to files.

I try and save a file on my HDD (not the SSD) and a lot of the time it works. In some occasions, however, the following events take place:I attempt to save a file
The cursor is replaced with the pending symbol (spinning circle)
Any programs open cease to function

I have had success in the past using a .bat file to create a desktop shortcut.

I was infected a week ago with a virus or malware of some sort and cleaned it, No virures or malware on my system as of right now.

Here is an example of how I wrote my desktop shortcut .bat files:

@echo off

start iexplore.exe "www.yahoo.com" (as an example)
This is the syntax I always have used and it worked.

When I click on the shortcut I get an error message that reads: Windows cannot find 'iexplore.exe'. Make sure you typed etc. etc.

My system is working fine. IE 9 is working faster than ever and have no problems with Internet Explorer.

I checked Internet Explorer in my Program files and it indeed lists iexplore.exe in the folder.

Again, my system is clean of any virurs, malmare, rootkits and all PUP's.

Any help on why Windows cannot find iexplore.exe?

My level of experience is intermediate.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Writing Desktop Shortcut Using .bat file

Hello bear, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Close, but the command just needs to have the full path to iexplorer.exe included.

Code:
@echo off

start "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" http://www.yahoo.com

Option Three in the tutorial below can give you some more ideas about this. Especially if you would like to create a normal shortcut instead of a .bat file.

Hey guys,
I'm trying to figure out an easy way to write a PAC file, but only have it apply to users' web browsers and nothing else.

Here's my PAC file as it is right now:

function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
{
if (dnsDomainIs(host,".<localdomain>")) return "DIRECT";
if (isInNet(myIpAddress(),"<local subnet range 1>"))
return "PROXY <proxy IP>";
if (isInNet(myIpAddress(),"<local subnet range 2"))
return "PROXY <proxy IP>";
else
return "DIRECT";
}
After implementing this file, I've found that in addition to sending websites through the proxy, it also does the same for any web content posted in emails. This would be very annoying for my users because they have to type in their LDAP credentials each time they close and open a web browser.

So basically what I'm asking is if there's any way to make a PAC file not apply to Outlook?

I have a folder titled DVEVI6. In the folder are 10 sub folders. How can I write a batch file to copy all the contents of the DVEVI6 folder from one drive to another and automatically overwrite any existing files that may be present?

Answer:Writing a batch file in Windows XP

Try this ...

open notepad and type in the following (italics mean you need to find the right value):

xcopy drive:\path\dvevi6 drive:\path /s/e/c/f/y

Save this as dvevi6.bat

The italicized drive:\path are the source and destination paths.

Is there any way, in any HTML-insertable language (JavaScript, Perl, etc.) that you can write to a file on the local server or some how keep a record of something?
I want to keep a dynamic list of who's coming to a website, and need it to be added to each time the page is loaded. The operation would run in the background with no visual trace.
I don't want to just use the automatic emailing method, as obviously that would get a little tedious with the emails.

Any ideas?

Answer:Simply Writing to a File via Internet

Assuming that I understand your question correctly, the short answer is "yes".

Since the server displays the pages you create (and may run scripts as part of building/processing a page), you can both collect and display dynamic information as part of your page. You could use either perl or javascript for this purpose. You might look at a "guestbook" as a simple example of the type of code that could be used.

Note that the Apache web server, (as one example) produces all sorts of logfile information about who visits your site, their IP address, etc., so you may not need any additional recording (although you will have to parse the logfiles). You may be able to use the information that is already being recorded instead of writing your own code to record it again.

Hope this helps.

Hello everyone,

I've got some softball questions about writing batch files.

1)What is the proper syntax to include multiple folders in a set path statement?

for example I want to run an application called fred.exe and smith.exe.
Fred is located at c:\scripts\torrent seeds\july\fred.exe
Smith is located at \\ASUA-HTPC\Datadrive 1\TV Shows 1\smith.exe
(Note I put spaces within the locations)

2)When it the % needed around both sides of a variable?

I have seen %PATH% and %PATH. I have also seen %1 and %1%.

3)What is the ~ for when associated with a variable?

Such as SET JOB=%~1

My batch writing skills are just starting so the simpler explanation the better.

Thanks for any help you can provide me.
-Steve

Answer:Questions about writing a batch file.

For the first item, are you wanting to run fred.exe in one folder, and smith.exe in another folder? If so, I think you can use the "cd" command in the script before running the programs.

Hi,
I finally got Win 7 and while I was trying to network 2 computers together, I ran across a program on the AT&T website called 'AT&T Troubleshoot and Resolve Tool' for finding problems with your network. I downloaded and installed it but right when it said Program Launching, an error message pops up saying "Error writing to temporary file. Make sure your temp folder is valid." I don't know what to do with this. I tried a few different things, putting the actual downloaded file (the one you can run or save) and saving it to username/appdata/local/temp and installing it from there. I thought about the permissions that I had changed (like an idiot) because I can't stand being locked out of anything, but then I read on quite a few sites that changing permissions doesn't fix it. So I left well enough alone. Maybe I should go back and change them back. But what concerns me is that on most sites that had something on this, the programs that was being installed (unsuccessfully) when this exact message popped up for them was a completely different program. They were all different programs. Someone was installing Roxio, someone else a youtube downloading program, someone else was trying to install Mozilla and got the same error message.
What's up with that? Is this going to be a common problem that 7 is going to have? The same error code pops up in both vista and xp too.
It seems like you guys like the 'Hijack This' report, s... Read more

And while you are at it, read thru the board and check out how many problems SP2 is giving everyone. Liz

The OK screen is issued by the program spuninst and is not an external instruction.QuoteOnce it is completes I would like a pop-up to say COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY.Batch code does not do pop-ups, but you can issue a message on the console using echo. If the /w switch is for the wait parameter, I think you have to spell it out. Someday someone will have to explain the /wait parameter to me. Why not just run the started commands in-line?

Is there any way I can view the contents of a RAR file without actually opening it and possibly exposing my PC to some sort of nasty surprise?

Hi

I have a brand new Tectra A10 that I have used the recovery disk to restore the machine to XP Pro - I have done this process many times before.

I have addred the machine to our Domain but whenever I try to write to our file server (Windows Server 2008) I get the blue screen.

Writing to an old 32 bit Server is fine.

I have made sure that the NIC Card driver is upto date.

Any Ideas

Thanks

Lew

Answer:Tectra A10 - writing to file server ends with BSOD

I presume you use your Tecra in your company.
Have you spoken with your local administrator?

I mean described problem is understandable but for me it is not a typical Toshiba related issue and such problems should be fixed with IT people in your company.

If you have some problem with hardware components or Toshiba preinstalled software then you are here on the right place.

This may be in the wrong section of the forum. If so, I apologize.

I have changed the icons on my desktop to get rid of the shortcut arrow. That worked fine except that the icon now has a small outline where the arrow should be. I have a blank.ico file that I used in Windows 7 to get rid of the shortcut arrow. It has to go into C:\Windows\System32...

Windows will not allow me to paste the file into that folder, citing a permissions issue. I am unable to change permissions on the folder. I am the Administrator of the PC. I have searched the forum for a tutorial or a thread on this topic, but didn't find anything.

I know that Windows 10 has heightened security on the Windows system files, but is there a workaround?

Answer:Writing File to \Windows\System32 denied. Workaround?

Hello Mediocrites,

By default, Windows will not let you directly save to the "C:\Windows\System32" folder from an external source.

If this is the case, save the .ico file to say your desktop first, then see if you are able to copy it to the "C:\Windows\System32" folder. When you do, you should be prompted to "Continue" to approve.

DOS doesn't understand spaces. Enclose the \\servername\sharename in double quotes (") or use the DOS 8.3 filename for the directory.

IE:

net use m: "\\server\BigGreg's Music"

or

net use m: \\server\BigGre~1

Hi,

I am setting up a backup system for my pc, backsup to a remote machine via ftp. The files to backup will be compressed into a zip file and then backed up to the remote machine. My question is, if my pc gets infected with a virus and those files backed up to the remote machine, will the virus infect the remote machine as well ? (if the files are not unzipped on the remote machine & both machines running on windows Xp pro). Appreciate any help or suggestions in this.

Regards
Sudhi

Answer:Virus inside a rar or zip file

No, malware inside a ZIP or RAR file can't infect a machine, unless you extract the malware (and execute it).

So in your case, the simple fact of storing a ZIP backup on a remote machine will not infect that remote machine.

That's why malware researchers share malware samples in password-protected ZIP files.

Hi, I need help in writing the result generated from my codes to a file.

I am using Sulley framework.

req1 = s_get("IName")
for i in range(req1.names["BName"].num_mutations()) :

Hi,

I would like to have a text file that stores a number, lets say 2000. I want my batch script to grab the number from that file, and put it into a variable. The script will then do stuff with that variable and once it is finished, add 1 to it (don't know how easy that bit is). Then I want the script to write this number (2001) back into the text file, overwriting the old number.

So basically the contents of the text file would go from 2000, to 2001, to 2002, etc each time the batch file is run.

Would anyone be able to point in the right direction for this?

Any help is highly appreciated.

Answer:Solved: batch programming: reading and writing from/to text file?

Code:

@for /f %%a in (file.txt) do @set /a var=%%a+1
echo.%var%>file.txt

I was just clearing some stuff off my comp yesterday to make some space, and I found a "Downloads" folder in my "Favourites" folder. I thought it was just a shortcut, so I deleted it and then found it deleted everything in my actual downloads folder and I'd already emptied the recycle bin.

I did a System Restore and it got my downloads folder back and everything in it, but I think it's messed up some installer stuff. I downloaded the latest Second Life update and tried to install it and I get the error "NSIS Error writing temporary file. Make sure your temporary file is valid".

I only get the error with this version of Second Life though. I can install the previous version. Other errors include some "Windows Installer" errors saying "The Windows Installer service cannot be accessed", or some programs like Google Earth do nothing when I try to install them.

Some programs install, others give me these errors.

Tried searching and downloading and reinstalling Windows Installer 4.5 and did the misexec.exe /unregister thing in cmd that's on the Microsoft website, but still nothing.

Answer:NSIS Error Writing Temporary File and other files not installing

Check you have folders C:\Windows\Temp and C:\Users\<your account>\AppData\Local\Temp.Check also you have correct declared variables in Environment Variables (Control Panel>>System>>Advanced System Settings)

(I have different settings than original becaused I moved C:\Windows\Temp a while ago)

Hello .
I cant access my system volume information file on my hard drive. Spyware doctor has located a trojan there and blocked it on several occasions but I cant access the file to delete it. It says that access is denied. What do I do.
thanks

Answer:Help, cant access file with trojan inside

If you can boot into Safe Mode try deleting the file there. Safe Mode has a limited amount of applications running which makes it ideal for purposes like this.

I've asked that a Moderator move this topic to the Am I Infected forum where there are those that are more knowledgeable about these problems.

Answer:Idk what the virus is but my hijack file is inside.

Hi tony82x,
Welcome to Major Geeks!

I'm making a bug collection, so if you'd like to contribute, please attach a screen shot of the bugs with your next post. Then please continue as follows:

Go to the READ & RUN ME FIRST and work through all the instructions. If there is something you can't do, just make a note of what happens to tell us later and then continue on. When you're finished, use the Manage Attachments button down below the reply window to attach your logs. If you get all four logs, you'll need to post twice, because you can only attach three logs with each post.

Thanks.

Without using any Nero or file burning software, can Windows XP itself supports simple file copying to disc. Not that I know of, but i have a user who can do these.

1. select a file, right click and press SEND TO the burner
2. simply copy and paste the file to the burner
3. reopen a file on a disc, edit it, and then can save it back onto the disc.

Strange, anyone welcome to comment. Thanks.

Hi TimS -

If you had followed through on your last thread here we may have avoided another round of cleaning. Please see this through to the end, where you will be given valuable protection information once your system is clean.

I'm going to have you run some scanning tools first, then we'll go after whatever is left.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run the following tools. Download and update the databases on each program before running. Ad-Aware? SE Personal Edition
*Note* For Ad-AwareSE also install the VX2 Addon Cleaner To run this tool ... Read more

I have a fairly large Fortran 77/90 & C program, compiled using Compaq Visual Fortran 6 & Microsoft Visual C++ 6 under Win XP.  On a particular test case it generally executes ok when invoked outside a batch file, but always fails when invoked from a particular batch file.  It stops on a Fortran 90 Allocate statement, but does not return the STAT result coded into that statement.  Seems to relate more to how much storage has been allocated rather than to the particular array being allocated, because I can reorder the allocation of different arrays and the stop does not occur on the same array.Although this is a large body of code, the test case is small and should not be requiring a large amount of allocated storage.I have tryed cutting the batch file down to just the statements that occur before invoking the EXE file (which are SET /P, ECHO, COPY, DEL, IF EXIST), then running the truncated batch file, then executing the EXE outside the batch file.  The EXE also fails in that usage.Any ideas on what I should be looking for to fix this?

I got caught this morning. Hungover, tired, and just plain dumb.

"A friend" sent me a file. Supposedly some great an amazing pics of her new baby. On offer was a .zip file which I downloaded. Within there was a "picture" only it was xxx.jpg.xxx.com, so in fact it was really a .com file.

I ran this file (yes, I am dumb), and now my MSN sends out endless requests to other people to download these files from me which will infect them.

Perhaps my saving grace is that I use WinPatrol. When I ran this it detected changes to my registry startup areas which I told it to remove. Once I had rebooted I am no longer sending out nasty messages (so far, its hard to say exactly how often the messages are sent). However, the virus files are still on my machine in an unknown location.

I do still have the original infected file that I was sent which can be made available for analysis.

I am running XP Pro SP2, and use Eset NOD32 V3 with most recent updates. The bug went straight through this like a knife through butter. I have updated and recanned my machine both locally, and with Eset's online scanner. Nothing found. Eset misses the install files for the virus, and also the running virus (my friend's machine is still actively spamming the virus files out).

Hi there,

I have a weird problem trying to copy files onto a DVD-RAM disk (formated with FAT32)with Windows Explorer... for which I couldn't find any solution, not even a report, with google or in the MS knowledgebase etc.

It goes this:
depending on the file size, when I copy files from my hard disk onto the DVD-RAM disk I get ...

a) for files < ~ 200 kB: Windows Explorer shows the usuall small window with the green progress bar, which closes upon apparent completion of the process. Explorer now shows the files on my DVD-RAM disk as expected. I can even open and modify them now on the DVD-RAM disk.
BUT... when I remove and reinsert the DVD-RAM disk again, the files are not there any more!!! Moreover, sometimes I hear my DVD drive is not even spinning when Explorer tells me its is copying the files!

b) for files > ~ 200kB: Windows Explorer refuses to copy the files with the error message "Cannot read from the source file or disk".

Before you ask...
Yes, I have administrator rights and full control of the files .

No, the files are not in use by any other program.

Yes, problem persists whatever file from whatever location on my hard disk to whatever location on the DVD-RAM I try to copy.

Yes, I can read/delete files from the DVD-RAM disk, and even manually create new folders / files and rename/modify them!

Yes, the very same files Windows Explorer refuses to copy onto my DVD-RAM / FAT32 disk I can successfully copy on a RW-CD with UDF format.

HI ALL!

My OS is win2000 and i am getting the error message:" error writing temporary file..check to see if temporary directory is valid" whenever i attempt to open a new setup file. I can download new programs but can't open them afterwards. I suspect corrupt windows files but when looking for "System File Checker" on my pc, I discovered it isn't a default package in windows 2000 and needs to be installed off of the windows 2000 Pro disk. I attempted to install the system tools off of the disk as described by the readme documents on the win2000 pro disk and i couldn't install it because I received the same error message cited above. I then thought i would deceive my pc by downloading windows installer 2.0 from the Microsoft website by opening the file rather than saving and installing which I knew i wouldnt be able to do and got the message "file already exists". I am at a complete loss as to what to do next. All help is appreciated.

Thanks, PCSleuth

Answer:error writing to temporary file..check to see if temp directory is valid

things to check

Do you actually have the rights to install ? Unless you have admin rights, you cannot.

Do you have a temporary directory? That is usually c:\windows\temp (I prefer c:\temp myself), and this is defined in your systems 'temp' and possibly also 'tmp' environmental variable (look for system properties/environment variables).

Not every installer uses these settings - crappy sofware might do all sorts of odd, non-standard things. In other words, expects to be able to create a directory anywhere it likes. In this case, you would need admin rights to the whole machine, and not have certain directories marked read-only. Can't help on crappy software....but the inability to install an OS add-on points most towards the first problem I mentioned.
