Browser based serial port application

Question: Browser based serial port application

Hi,

Could anyone tell me which of the many languages I should/could use to develop a browser based application meant to support database functions (store/retreival to local disk of user inputs) and that could read and send data off the host PC serial port. I'm not looking for client/server stuff, just a plain browser based application running on a local machine for accessing its local serial port and sending/storing data to or from it. I could do it using WinAPI or MFC but I would prefer to have the familiar web based application instead.

I'm not familiar with ASP.NET, PHP, XML, SQL etc... so I wonder if any of them could dot the job ??

Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: Browser based serial port application

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A system we use at work requires us to run gps's to serial ports. On occasion, after rebooting, windows detects the activity on the serial port as a serial mouse....then all hell breaks loose with the mouse....it jumps all over the screen left and right clicking as it pleases! It's actually quit funny...

The way we handle this...is bye killing power to the gps....which instantly calms the pointer down....then going into device manager and disableing the phantom serial mouse. It works....but the problem allways pops up again sooner of later.

I doubt many have had experience with this, but can anyone think of a way to prevent it?

Thanks for the help.

Answer:gps detected as serial mouse on serial/comm port

Check the bios settings to make sure that the Com Port is not set to WAKE-On setting, along with the fact that the serial port is set at Com2.

It also sounds like the Com Port setting in WinXP is set wrong for the Serial port, which I would check.

Need some advice a quick as possible.

Windows XP Pro
ofc had a built in serial port go bad, it was hooked to a charicter generator (don't no how to spell charicter) for a tv channel.
Installed a Controller Card with two serail ports PCI Multi I/O Controller Card, it didn't show up in the device manager was having problems getting the driver to work. says to load driver first then put in the pci card. Anyway it wouldn't work. The port that was built in (that went bad was on com 1) When the new card didn't work I used a usb with a serial adaptor and it went in fine and showed up in the divice manager and it said it was working and it started out on com 3, I no each time you plug the adaptor into a different usb port it goes to a different com port. That isn't a problem cause it would stay in the same port. Anyway device manager said it was working we changed the charicter generator to com 3 but it wouldn't work. We no the cables are good. I then got a PCI Card with one serial port instead of two and installed it and it show right up in the device manager and said it was working and I for get what comport it was on but changed it to com 1. that port didn't work either. Finally brought in another windows xp computer and hooked everhthing to it and it works. The xp computer I brought in had no serial port so used the same usb to serial adaptor that we had used and it work the first time. Show up in the device manager just like on the first comp... Hi,
I have a m200 tablet and the obove mentioned dock/port replication PA3314-1PRP.
As the M200 has no serial port (rs232) I want to use the one on the docking station but it is not recognized as a device on my tablet.

Thew network connections and usb ports all work fine and the lpt port is shown on device manager. I have restored the tablet and it still does not recognise the serial port.
How can i get this port recognised so that I can use it.

Many Thanks
Lee

Answer:Portege M200: serial port does not work with port replicator

Hello Lee

I just can confirm that when you use Advanced port replicator III with Portege M200 several ports are not working. Problem is that Portege M200 does not support these interfaces.

This is a technical limitation and the PS/2 Mouse port, PS/2 Keyboard port, Serial port, i-Link port (Firewire), and DVI port will not be supported when Portege M200 is docked on the Advanced Port Replicator III. :(

have a laptop w/ Vista with no serial port. Purchased a USB to serial adaptor and that works just fine but I have an application that has to be configured to a particular serial port and if you unplug the device and plug it back in or turn off and turn back on after setting the particular port, Vista (and maybe XP as well?) assigns the ports and it is not always the same com port. I then either have to go in through device manager or the application software to change COM port setting.

Is there a way to configure Vista to always assign a port to a particular device?

Hi,as company we are buying laptops with preinstalled windows. But we will install there our own licensed windows for employees. Is it possible to get later windows key for machines based on serial number of laptop? Some employees can buy those laptops, but we will not give them our license. Thanks for replies.

Answer:Windows key based on laptop serial number

If you keep the recovery partition when you install your own image, then you can restore the devices to the factory state, which would be a Lenovo image with OEM Windows key.  You can sell them off that way.  But if you want a custom key somehow linked to SN, you'd have to ask MS, I would think.  Lenovo has volume-licensed OEM keys.

Using VB6. These microprocessor based USB serial ports work on O/S prior to Win 10. MSCOMM32 fumbles along if your code is well wrapped in error handling. Moving to Win 10, MSCOMM32 doesn't recognize the port at all. Zip, nada. Code that used to enumerate serial ports (on earlier O/S) also fails to find the PIC18F4550 devices under Win 10. I have tried looking at the registry and at DCBs, but nothing. As a side note, the third party MSCOMM32 lookalike SCOMM32 works just fine on these devices under Win 10. It appears there's no third party driver involved as Microsoft provides the driver. So why are these particular devices invisible all of a sudden (all other types of USB serial devices I have continue to work as normal). TIA, Bob.

Answer:PIC18F4550 based serial ports under Windows 10

To answer my own question, it appears that Microsoft have put some USB serial ports in the USBDevice ClassGUID. So, rewriting the serial port enum code to look in both Ports and USBDevice classGUIDs worked for me.

I run the Vulnerability scanner yesterday GFILanGuard Network Security Scanner and it shows that on port 81 there is a backdoor Asylum. But I do not know how to see which application is actually using that port. I have used the TCP view but it did not show any kind of application running on port 81, at the same time when i tenet the port 81 I observed that its responding and there is some activity going on that port

I have used another tool named Advance Admin tool and it shows the information as follows:

Port Protocol Description Possible Trojan

Can you please help me how I can be sure what is actually going on this port. I mean the exact application which is listening on this port.

This is sort of a bug report. A Lenovo X131e with Windows 7 x64 and the PL2303 driver including 1.6, 1.61 and 1.7 will not successfully install the driver - Windows always reports "Driver Install Failed" on plug in to USB 3 or USB2 ports. However, putting a USB2.0 hub inbetween the USB to Serial Adapter and either USB port type makes the adapter work fine. This was not the case with the X130e. I'm not sure where to report this beyond this posting, but more of an FYI.

Can somebody explain to me what a LAN Based Application is? I've tried to google it but cannot find nothing. I would imagine its an application that only operates within a LAN, so i.e an office, so it wont be able to communicate to another office?

Thanks

Answer:LAN Based Application

It is an application that runs only on a LAN (Local Area Network) without internet access.

The LAN could be small, 3 - 4 clients; or large with over 500 clients in multiple buildings.
I have worked in both situations and used propriatary applications that ran on the LAN, but were not designed to be accessed from the internet.

Video Conferencing, Remote Access Control, Gaming Servers, all started as LAN applications.

This is the best info I could find and it isn't much.

I posted in this forum as I feel this is security related. Mods move if need be.

I'm looking for a web based (preferably PHP) change log program. It should do the following:

1. Be simple!
2. Allow people to enter descriptions of basic system changes
3. Changes should have categories by systems and can be filtered as such.
4. Time stamp the actions and have a "master display" where all changes can be viewed
5. LDAP authentication would be nice.

Does such a thing exist? My goggling has failed due to "change log" being such a popular term.

I have a neat idea that I would like to try out. Caution this is going to get nerdy not just geeky. I play D&D and my group uses a program that has our characters on it. It's a very old program made for Win 95 but I have made it work in everything from Linux to Vista.

I want to find a way to put the program online so my group can all edit their characters instead of doing it last minute before we play. I have a web server and hosting so thats no issue. My first thought is to use a VPN or terminal services but is there a way to just host the application by it's self? What I would like is something as non technical as having a desktop icon they can just click and it opens the program as if it's local.

Answer:make an application web based

Sure, just rewrite it in some language your web server can run and have it save all its data in an appropriate database accessible to the web server.

If you're talking about just putting the .exe on your website, it doesn't really work that way. By default, Windows won't run programs from the internet, and the web server won't allow you to write data to it. Depending on how the app works, you may be able to give each person a copy and configure it to save its data remotely in a central location. It might be possible to do something like Sysinternals Live, but I doubt you'd be able to do with just regular hosted webspace. That also doesn't take into account the saving/sharing of data, just the remote access to the .exe.

Hi - I am selling a sewing machine that has a serial port on the side but most people use USB sticks these days to transfer embroidery designs into their machines. The convertors I have seen have a male connection whereas I need a female connection. Does anyone know if there is a convertor that has a female connection? Thanks!

Answer:Help with serial to USB port

Hi judysue2, and welcome to TSG.

Are you talking about the USB connector or the 9 pin D-sub serial connector?

There are 9 pin serial cables that come in all combinations of male and female connectors on each end. There are also 9 pin D-sub "gender changer" blocks available.

EDIT: The serial port on your sewing machine is most likely designed to connect to a computer running specific downloading software for the machine. A general purpose serial-to-USB adapter would not have the built-in software needed to read the memory stick and send the data to the machine.

Sorry I didn't get back to you on the other post, been crazy around here...

Anyway, press F10 repeatedly when your computer boots up to enter the BIOS. After you reach the BIOS main menu, see if you can find a menu or setting for Serial Port. It is probably under the menu, Integrated Peripherals, or a menu similar to that. There should be an "Enable/Disable" option.

So im going to try to explain this as well as i can.
I am running a windows 7 and I have a radio I would like to program. The main issue is that the program needed to program it is for DOS. So I installed DOS 6.22 On my VMWare virtual machine (VMware Workstation 8.0.0) and ran the program. Now the radio connects with a serial cable. but since I am using my laptop (lenovo ideapad z575) It does not have a Serial port. So I am using a USB to Serial Adapter (Trendnet TU-S9). But DOS will not recognize it.

What I am wanting to do overall is to make my windows 7 computer assume that my USB adapter is a physical Serial port so that I can go into VMware and attach a "physical" serial port to my VM. any Ideas or other suggestion i could try? thanks and sorry for the read.

Answer:USB serial port help

Did the trendnet USB to serial adapter come with drivers? Usually devices like that will. If not you can find them on the website most of the times. You may have to just install the drivers on your machine, and within the VM.

Happens that the image makes, at regular intervals a small jump to the left. So doing the final page is make up in stripes.
The software manufacturer states that some othe program is interrupting the incoming data stream from serial port, suggesting to disabling the Power Management System. I did it without any result.
My question is:
Can someone address me to what could be devices or software that commonly sample the serial port ? In order to investigate on how to stop this chopping activity.

Question: USB to serial port

Mate has an Acer laptop and wishes to use this for motor diagnostics. The tool insists that it wants to use port Com 1.System Manager says Com1 is in use although this port is not shown at all in device manager.Trying to change the port is not permitted ie XP won't let.Any advice on how to determine what is using Com 1 or how to find and delete the port with a view to reinstalling it as the USB to serial connection?

Answer:USB to serial port

"Trying to change the port is not permitted ie XP won't let." this is true of any operating system. A COM port is a COM port and cannot be change to a USB port. You can view the port and delete it in Device Manager. Right click "My Computer" and select Manage/Device Manager. Double click Ports (COM&LPT) to view the properties of the port/s, here you will also be able to disable the port under Device Usage.

Question: Serial Port

I have reviewed the other serial port malfunction thread, but it didn't seem to correct my problem. My computer will not recognize a device plugged into the serial port. I have confirmed the settings for the port which concur with COM 1, but I continue to receive a "device not connected" in the software.

Answer:Serial Port

Check to make sure the serial port is enabled in the bios. Sometimes, one will be disabled by default (to make us crazy), but it's easy to fix.

Hi, I've got a really weird problem with a serail com port device.First off I know that the actual device, 20 col line display for point of sale machines, is working. I have 2 windows XP machines, one has 1 serial port the other has 4.1. I plug the serial device into Machine 1, and immediately the device screen shows some version info showing that it works.2. I plug the serial device into Machine 2, and nothing happens.I run the following DOS commands on both machinesmode com1:96,n,8,1echo test>com11. On machine 1, the text "test" is displayed on the device2. On machine 2, nothing is displayed.I check the device settings in System->Device manager->Com1 on both machines and made sure they're both exactly the same, and still doesn't work.I'm completely stumped. I have a printer that connects to the serial port that works on both machines, but my line display device only works on 1 of them.Does anyone have any idea why or some config that I may have overlooked ?Thanks.

Answer:Serial COM port help

Trying to test serial devices without the proper tools is a real pain.Standards for the RS-232 interface have be altered over the years. In addition to that, how a device responds can be unprofitable if the handshake lines and not used properly. I am not joking with you. I used to work as a advanced technician many years ago. Serial ports were horrible back then. It is supposed to be better now!If you do not want to spend a lot of time on this, you can get a gadget that resolves serial interface problems with older equipment. But wait. If all the stuff is new, get back to your supplier and throw the problem on him. New equipment should not do this at all.Try your device on as many PCs as you can. If you get mixed results, the cable is not wired properly for the device. Or the device does not conform to current standards. Here is a tutorial. http://www.arcelect.com/rs232.htmI hope this is of some help. Let us know which direction you go with this.EDIT: A quick fix maybe to just use a USB to RS232 adapter.

Question: Serial Port Help

I am trying to connect my fiancee's palm pilot via serial port to my computer running windows XP. I have tried both serial ports on the back of my computer (one has a picture of a monitor and one has a picture of what reminds me of a lego Oh, and these are 9-pin ports I believe). Anyway, I can't get the palm pilot to sync with the computer. After looking at the FAQ section on Palm's website, it sounds like the reason it isn't working is because of conflicting COM/IRQ addresses.

Can someone please tell me the best way to see if there are any COM ports available on my computer and, if there's not, how to free one up? Thanks in advance!

If the plug has a pic of a monitor on it, the socket is probably for the onboard Video. I'm guessing that you are not in the right area for the serial ports?

Question: Serial to USB PORT

Here's a question I had from a relative.

"Many of the new laptops don't have serial ports anymore. I still need a serial port to transfer text from my REALLY old slab laptop. Is there a way to fake a serial connection through a USB port? I'm sure they sell serial-usb adapters. But how do you convince the computer that you've established a serial (terminal) connection?"

Can't he simply buy a USB to Serial port adapter, connect it to the old laptop with the serial port and transfer his data to another computer that has a USB port?

Your help is appreciated as usual.

A user has resized a window within a hosted web application to the point where it is exactly OK/too small, meaning it flickers back and forth between having scroll bars and not. While it is in this state, it essentially freezes out any other commands in the window or ability to resize it. Are there any ways to interupt this, delete application window size preferences or other ideas? I know this is data that is stored locally as I can execute the same functions on another PC sucessfully. This is viewing of a web hosted PC based medical application by a standard PC running Windows 7, IE9. Is there a way to delete user preferences for the application so it will default to orginal window sizing?

Thanks!

Answer:Re-Sizing of Web Based Application Windows

As a workaround, you could try a free program I use myself to automatically resize your different applications. I know how annoying this can be, in my case, especially for Internet Explorer.

For the pharmacy I have made an application to support a drug preparation. This application is used in public pharmacies as well as in hospitals and industry.
This is a web-based application. So the installation has been done on the server with a configuration within IIS.
The clients start the application in InternetExplorer.
Why InternetExplorer? Because the client's preparation protocols, raw materials need to be weighed and labels must be printed. Hereby I use self-programmed ActiveX controls. And other browsers do not support ActiveX controls.
The web-based application is generally found to be good.
As Edge is increasingly "pushing", InternetExplorer seems to be the cornerstone, as well as the application described above.
My questions are now:
- How long are web-based applications still supported?
- Will Edge support ActiveX controls in the future?
- Is there an alternative?
I would appreciate if there were sound answers to the above questions.
Sincerely,
Wim

I have a web based application and want it to port it on Windows Vista . What are the procedures I must follow to check for its compliance on safe deployment on Vista?

Answer:Web Based Application Compliance Testing

Let's see. I have no clue, but if I think about it, it must be:
Does your web server software work properly in Vista?
Which flavor of Vista do you plan on using?
Do you have the hardware to support it?
Have you checked into any of the documentation?
If you have checked into the documentation, promptly ignore it, set up your own test box, and see how things shake out. If what you find out on your own correlates with the documentation, then you might start to have some confidence.

That's where I would start if it were me. Essentially, a web service comes down to the web-server software, some sort of a middle tier, and I would imagine some sort of database. Are they compatible with Vista?

Does anyone know if there is a device out there that will allow you to connect up to say, five serial port devices to one serial port and control each device as necessary? The device would have to allow a remote user to change which device to control without having to physically push a button on the serial port switch. Either that, or it would need to connect to the network so someone could SSH into the serial port (console) switch and control devices.

Answer:Serial port switch?

You could just buy a few of these.

Hi, I am new to this forum and I have a question when using bluetooth to connect an external device (Blueport XP). This external device requires a serial port for communication, but I don't see the bluetooth on my laptop had assigned a port.

I would like my bluetooth to work as the following mode:
When I search online, I find other people who faced my case have difference hardware (Left is others, right is mine):

They have the "Standard Serial over Bluetooth Link (COMXX)" under the Port catergory, while my "Device manager" don't have a such a Port category.

I think that is the reason when my external device can be successfully connected (using passcode), but still not assigned the com port and thus no later communication. (Left is others, right is mine):

I have checked my laptop configuration, my bluetooth is : Intel 7265 AC/B/G/N Dual Band Wireless + Bluetooth Version 4.0

So my question is: Does my bluetooth not support serial port profile (SPP)?
If it does support SPP, how can I make it work?

Thank you,

Answer:no serial port over bluetooth

Hmm, I don't have much information about this subject but perhaps your laptop needs to support the serial port and not the Bluetooth in particular. Not all laptops have a serial port. Sorry, can't provide anything more in this regard.

However, check How to Create a Bluetooth Virtual Serial Port | eHow. Maybe it will help.

I'm running as ASUS A7V600 motherboard, WIN XP Home edition. Two on-board serial ports, Award V6.0 BIOS. I have four serial ports, the second two being on a Lava DSerial PCI card. The serial ports are necessary in order to interface with some equipment that pre-dates USB. The application software that's used has a sensitivity to the I/O address (not the COM port number), and will work properly only when the I/O address is that which is normally associated with a given com port number.

So, the software works just fine with the two onboard ports since they have the addresses 03F8 and 02F8. However, the Lava port addresses on com 3 and com4 are set to FFE8 and FFF8. Win XP home allows you to change the com port number OK, but doesn't allow you to change the I/O address range used as previous OSs did. Lava tech support says the addresses are assigned by the BIOS and there's nothing they can do.

There must be some way to influence the BIOS into assigning other I/O addresses (03E8 and 02E8 would be nice!), but haven't had any luck with that. Is there some way I can force this to come out the way I want?

Answer:Serial port I/O addresses

I have an older program that I want to play networked, but the only choice for networking is to do it using a serial cable.

Since newer computers dont come with serial ports, I was wondering if there is a program that allows you to emulate a virtual serial port and pass it over to another computer via normal ethernet. The same program on the other computer will translate the information back into another virtual serial port?

I am running a DOS program that communicates through the serial port to a RS-232 to RS-485 converter and my signal is not communicating properly. I know its not the converter cause it works on various other equipment. I've tried testing the com port with various com port testers and all test pass. Not sure where else to check.

My computer has a nine pin male serial port and the LaserJet has a 25 pin female serial port. Do I just switch the printer port setting from LPT1 to COM1, and where can I get the correct serial cable? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Serial port for LaserJet 4

Another option would be a USB to parallel adapter.  Several companies sell them.Several years ago I used a HP LJ 4's serial port to print out results from mostly HP test equipment and that worked fine.  But I seem to remember some quirks to using the serial port with non HP devices.

Answer:Serial ATA Port number

The port numbers are listed in your motherboard manual, on the motherboard itself and in BIOS.

Hi, I have a desktop HP COMPAQ 8000 ELITE CONVERTIBLE MINITOWER PC. On device manager the PCI Serial Port shows that driver is missing, also my Wireless Network Card is not working correctly, it do not find any domain, it shows the red X. The same with a Wireless USB.I connected the PC through a Lan cable with Internet, then i searched for updates, but there was not any update. When I select propertis shows the ( code 28 ) and the location ( PCI Bus 0 , device 3 , function 3 ). I have a Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.  Please can somebody help me to find the driver for this port ? Thank you

Answer:PCI Serial Port Driver

Hi: You need this driver for the serial port. This package contains the Intel Local Management Service (LMS) and Serial-over-LAN (SOL) support for Intel Active Management Technology (AMT) for the supported desktop models and operating systems. This software is part of the Intel Digital Office Initiative. ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp45001-45500/sp45367.exe I don't see any other devices that need drivers from your screen shot, so unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to help you with why the wireless isn't working.

I am a radio amateur. I have a computer controlled radio that uses the serial port, cable, and a software program designed for this setup. It worked for about a year as per specs. Then, it just stopped working. Much trouble shooting reveals that the serial port is "not working." I have used a USB-serial emulator that works fine. So, the radio, cable and software are okay. Device manager says that the serial port is working. But the software can't contact the radio through it. There has been no change in the software. I build the computer some time ago with an Asus M2N-SLI delux MB. Computer otherwise works as normal in all respects. Any suggestions for trouble shooting much appreciated. Thanks.

Hello,

The Problem:

A friend of mine has some win32 and msdos applications that use serial
port communication with an external device, and a notebook that doesn't
have a serial port (unfortunately, many notebooks these days come
without serial ports). He got himself a USB to Serial Port Cable, and he
says that the win32 apps work just fine now, but the DOS ones don't.

I think (I'm not sure) those DOS applications don't run from an ms-dos
prompt under windows , but just in plain DOS mode. I'm trying to find out a
solution to use them under ms-dos.

I just want to find out if anyone knows any DOS driver for those USB to
Serial Port Converters / a method to get those dos applications running ...

Thanks.

Answer:USB to Serial Port driver for DOS

Just because you have a USB to serial converter cable/adapter doesn't mean DOS can work with the device. The device itself uses the USB protocol, so you need a DOS driver to "talk" to it. Scour the internet, I believe I saw one out there. search for - DOS usb
