Getting started in VB. Good program?

Question: Getting started in VB. Good program?

What's a good VB program to cut my teeth on? Keep in mind, that last time I use any form of BASIC was fourth grade....

Preferred Solution: Getting started in VB. Good program?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Okay this is going to be long, but bear with me.
My buddies computer died and I offered to fix it. I pretty sure the power supply took out the mother board. I looked for a replacement but few to found that was over priced. I suggested to go for more newer versions. We went with;

DFI ultra d mother board, Geforce 7900, OCZ 700w powersupply (his choice).
We are reusing AMD 3500 cpu, Kingston Hyperx (KHX4000K2/1G) memory and he bought eXtreme sound card. If I new he was going to buy a sound card, I would have him buy better memory. He had a Samsung 250g that was with his son-in-law getting his data back up (don't ask why I didn't do it), so I sold him my spare Western Digital 120g just to get started.

I got everything to work and had windows xp installed, all the drivers, antivirus and few choice programs I set people with to keep well clean and somewhat trouble free. When I had him bring it over I ask for everything, but all I got was monitor and case.

So here is the bad. He took it home and install his printer software. No problem yet. Then he install his keyboard and mouse. Problems...
His icons on his desktop started flashing and he tried to uninstall. Still no good. Try to go back on system restore, nothing change.
When he tried to reboot. Now XP will not start up right. It goes right to the black screen and ask him how he want to start it. No matter what he did or I did could change it.

I suggested to bring everything over this time and I would start over w... Read more

I could not open Windows (Vista) normally so I used the "Last Known Settings" option. I have it open, but I see errors in my event log such as:The DHCP allocator has detected a DHCP server with IP address 192.168.0.1 on the same network as the interface with IP address 192.168.0.104. The allocator has disabled itself on the interface to avoid confusing DHCP clients.Help.

This was the response to the same issue on another forum. The credit goes to the responder in that forum if it should solve your problem.good luck, truenorthdquigley        Senior Member with 112 posts.       Join Date: Apr 2006Location: Woodinville, WAExperience: Advanced 23-Apr-2006, 03:26 PM #3 There two DHCP servers on your network.  DHCP stands for "Dynamic Host Control Protocol". DHCP servers hand out (manage) IP addresses for network PCs and devices that have DHCP clients. In other words this service gives PCs and other devices the ability to automatically obtain and reserve IP addresses.  The error is saying that the device at 192.168.0.1 (which is probably a router) has a DHCP Server running and the device (probably a PC) at 192.168.0.85 tried to start a DHCP server but shut down because it found one running already.  If you have or had that PC/Server (the one at 192.168.0.85) enabled for connection sharing you should disable that on the PC as most people rely on their routers' DHCP Server to manage IP addresses for their home network.  I have a more complex network and run multiple servers. One of them is configured as a DHCP server. So with that configuration I need to disable the DHCP server on my router.

Yeah, like the title says I have never soldered anything in my tech life at all.
This is one of the last tech skills I lack, I have been avoiding it for the longest but it seems it is unvoidable.
I had a soldering iron from my technical college when I was doing my core classes but never used it because we weren't needing it back then.

I need to desolder a dc jack from my MSI u100 netbook in order to give it a new one I have, but kind of clueless on where to start.

Youtube.com is good for some tech follow me alongs but most people either talk too much or have the wrong information on their video or is some kind of **** rick roll.

If anyone knows of a site for beginners with no run me down junk, please let me know about it so I can get started late tonight.

Answer:My first time iron soldering, and need a good video resources to get me started.

just take some scrap metal and solder and mess around with it. remember to put flux on the metal to remove impurities that could imped the electric flow, use a very small tip so you don't burn half your motherboard, and just mess around with it.

I have three Autohotkey exe files in my appdata Startup folder of my laptop but they do not get started when Windows starts. Those same three files on my desktop in the same place start and run just fine. Each machine has the same version of Win8, Home Premium 64 build 9200.

If I open the Startup folder and click on any one of the files they start and run just fine.

In the registry for the desktop those three files appear in startup folder but not in laptop. Am almost sure that is the problem but don't have a clue what to do about it.

On both machines, Yankee Clipper III runs at start without me having to put it in either of my appdata Startup folders. I guess the installer took care of it for me.

Will someone try to give me some help here? I am slowly creeping up the learning curve of Win 8 and appreciate all the help I have received here along the way.

Thank you.

Answer:Program in Startup folder do not get started

Hummm? I put a unicode autohotkey shortcut in startup. Works fine. Did you really put the exes there? Try shortcut(s).

A bit of background about the program before I continue. It's called GHTCP (Guitar Hero Three Control Panel). It's used in conjunction with Guitar Hero III for the PC to insert custom songs into the game. For about a year this program was working flawlessly, until one day it crashed and hasn't worked since.

I just started up the program one day and it crashed before it could load up. I uninstalled and reinstalled several times, using normal installation and Windows Install CleanUp Utility but nothing worked; it kept crashing. It requires at least .NET Framework 2.0 to function. For a while I thought it was that, but after talking with Microsoft we've come to the conclusion that it's the program and not my .NET Framework.

So I've tried a lot of different things and nothing has worked. I installed Debugging Tools for Windows and debugged the program when it crashed, and here are the text files in a .zip: Crash Logs.zip

Here's the program itself if anyone wants to install it and inspect it: GHTCP_V2.0.zip

Please help.

I have a computer with XP that had a virus. I've removed the virus but now, after I start the computer and fire up a new program, a request to start an insdtall of Microsoft Office suddenly begins. I use task manager to kill it but how can I stop it from trying to start?
Thanks

Answer:Random program started after reboot

Is this any program, or an Office app? You may have reset the first run flag for office when you cleaned the virus, best thing to do is let it run through the install, and feed it your office cd when it asks for it.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. I have an Athlon X2 driven desk top run by Vista home premium that just went crazy. When it is booted up from a power down it will load the first program selected over and over until I stop it through the Task Manager. Once the program is stopped it seem to operate normally.

I have run spybot and adaware several times. I run Avast security and have screened the computer several times. Everything appears to be clean right now. Initially I found problems with all of these programs so I think I have some sort of virus but I can not find it. Following is the most recent HJK file.

I'm using Vista Business 64bit. I've created a task to play my winamp playlist file (.m3u) as my alarm for the morning. I've tested it and it works fine: it will wake my pc from sleep and log into my password protected account, then plays my songs from the list i've created. My problem is that I don't see winamp being run at all; just the music going on in the background. So here's my question: how do i interact with winamp when it's started by the Task Scheduler?

Pierson

correction: my pc is awaken by the Task Scheduler but it stays at the login page and the music will just keep playing in the background.

Hi Guys,

Need some help down here.

Right now I am a victim of the very new and as yet unpatched exploit described by Merijn ( http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.html )

But at the same time, I faced another problem, that is, whenever my PC is started, a window would be opened showing D:\Program Files

Please help.

I had installed HijackThis on WinXP Service Pack 1 but I got the following error :
"An unexpected error had occured at procedure : frmMain_LoadSettings() Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argurment."

However, I was still able to get a copy of the log.

I would really appreciate it if you have any suggestions.

Thanks you in advance

Hi everybody. Im kinda new here so dont be to hard on me. I have an older Dell pc that I am running with windows 2000. Over the years it has gotten a bit slower and Im sure a little clogged up. I went through my programs and discovered that over the years I have collected several programs all related to maintaining the pc. What I would like to do is uninstall ALL of them and do a fresh install of ONE program that does it all. Is there a program that does it all? Currently I have installed:

System Mechanic 6 Professional
Kaspersky Internet Security
SUPER AntiSpyware
Spyware blaster
Smart Defrag

I also must admit, I really dont have any problems with spyware or anything else. Like I said, a little slower than it used to be. But that is to be expected. I know that there is a new System Mechanic 8 out. I was thinking about upgrading to that and uninstalling everything else. Good idea or not?

Answer:Is there a good one for all program?

No. I used System Mechanic several years ago. It's not worth the money. Some of the things it does can be done better by free programs and stuff like a registry cleaner you shouldn't use anyway. It's not an anti virus. It has an anti spyware but it isn't very good. And it doesn't have a firewall. Chances are pretty good that Kaspersky is what is slowing down your computer because like most anti virus programs, it's running in the background and all anti virus programs slow down your computer to some degree. You have to sacrifice some speed to get that protection because you'll get infected if you don't have it. With the exception of Spyware Blaster, none of that other stuff including System Mechanic runs in the background so they're not slowing down your computer. Ditching all your security programs just because your computer is a little slow is throwing out the baby with the bath water.

Ive been using CuteFTP for a while and it is decent but I figure there may be something better out there.

Answer:Is this a good program to run??

Information on Folding at Home click hereNot malware but a scientific research programme based at Stanford University in the USA.It's looking at how proteins fold or misfold and has a bearing on some forms of cancer and diseases such as Alzheimers. It runs as a background service releasing your cpu from folding as soon as another program wants to run.It is taxing on your system as it will run the cpu flat out all the time (although it is adjustable for how much cpu usage it is allowed)Also have a look on the Folding forums click hereand see click here

I was wondering if such a program exists and if so, can someone recommend one? I'm looking to clean up some files on my registry. Is that safe? I've already used some programs like Spybot, Ad-aware, Norton and Trojan Remover. But, it seems I still have somewhat of a lot of programs still running in my registry which could possibly be slowing my computer. Any recommendations?

Answer:Looking for a good program

Hi Chadwick0211,

Registry cleaners are not recommended. When you say there appear to be programs running in your computer and slowing it down, how do you know this? What programs have highlighted them?

The reason I ask is that programs that run in the registry are either necessary system files, optional programs which you have installed or malicious files which have sneaked in. You can damage the registry very easily if you don't know what you are doing.

There are safer things to do with the second group, like stopping them running on startup, and experts here can help you with the last group. We just need to know a bit more about them.

Easy Duplicate finder. I have found this program. I saw it says it has good reviews and stuff. But when I did a scan it said it found like 200 duplicates out of 400. There is a lot more files to go through. that was 2% of my computer. I want to know about this program before I actually delete these files. I have made a system restore point. But I still would like to know other opinions on this program Please let me know.

So I have been looking at some of the application in CCleaner and I noticed that it has a feature where it can turn off programs so I was wondering what programs I could turn off. Please look at the following pictures to see each categories from start up, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Context Menu. So I just want to know what program are safe to switch off so I can slightly increase my performance since my computer lags a lot. Also one last question is, is it bad to have both Adobe Reader X and Adobe Acrobat 7 Pro on your laptop?

Answer:What program are good to have on?

From the browser's settings menu or options, look for the add-ons section to disable or tweak some or remove them completely. Do you have a particular issue with your computer? Ccleaner is mainly use for clearing your temp. files and could also be helpful in removing programs, no other. If you want to disable startup programs which are not needed during booting, you can try MS autoruns or startup lite by Malwarebytes.

Hello,

problem with my external hard drive.....this did happen before, but having reformatted in may it all seemed ok....so, i'm at least less inclined to panic thinking i've lost my 300gb or so of data - hope i'm right!

so, basically after trying to back up onto this (i would say unstable?) external HD (conceptronic, 500gb, "grb'n'go") - at a certain point it has a 'write error' or something like that - by the way, i try to treat it wit kid gloves by only having it on for about half an hour at a time - as it seems lengthy use was the problem - the plug overheats & so does the machine.....

anyway, it basically does not appear any longer - having left it switched off to cool overnight - plugging in the usb, NO icon in system tray, no drive appearing in 'my computer' panel.
so i then started looking in 'computer management' - but got the following message when i clicked on storage:

"the service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no devices associated with it. the snapin's display may be inconsistent with the removable storage service. if the problem persists please restart the snapin."

i wasn't really sure what to do, then thought - ok let's try 'services' & sure enough the device was not active. so i tried to start it - no joy - got this message from services:

"the R S service on the local computer started and t... Read more

Answer:removable storage service cannot be started - started then stopped

thanks again 4 any help!!!!

I have been using the built-in Windows Backup with both XP and Vista for a while now, but they are somewhat lacking in both scheduling and restoring. (I can't just boot off a disk and restore the whole thing at once if a drive fails, plus I get failures once in a while listed as "Unspecified error" when it is scheduled to run. yet I find nothing wrong.)

Does anyone know a good backup program that runs when scheduled and restores easily?

Answer:Good backup program?

I usually break this into two steps. I keep a clean image of the OS with drivers loaded on my server using Ghost and BartPE. Then, I use SyncToy to keep my important data backed up to the server as well. I don't have SyncToy scheduled, but I believe it can be done.

So I have been using Comodo Internet Security, but I think it has been causing some problems with the OS. It made everything run slow. either it was the firewall, or nvidia drivers... I reinstalled Windows 7 Pro x64 (formatted hd and did clean install), and everything is snappy and fast like it was in the beginning. The thing that I am having trouble with, is that with the RC, I used Comodo, and had the Nvidia drivers and all that, and it never was slow like this was before the reinstall. I don't think I could have messed anything up in the system files, because I never did anyhting to them.

Bottom line, I'm looking for a good, free firewall. Let me know what you guys think!

Not sure if this is the right location to ask, I am looking to find what is the best software to use to remove a program from your system for good. Like when you download a trial version of a program but then decide not to purchase and you go to uninstall program, I know that there is still information on your computer about that program.
What I am asking is if you go to RegEdit and then to software and delete will that remove it from your computer for good or do I need a registry cleaner program to do this.

Answer:Removing a program for good.

Hi

If you remove it using the uninstaller (Add/Remove Programs) that should be sufficient.

You could however run a system search for it's name and delete all the folders related to it under C:\WINDOWS\Documents and Settings\<userlogin>\ and C:\Program Files\. That will give you what is remaining.

More can be found in the registry, under Software, they are the remnant keys, but will do no harm if just left there - they are merely even a few bytes and your software will still be uninstalled.

I'll still stick with Windows Defender as my recommendation, and it's already in Vista. Aside from that, I'd recommend Eset Smart Security as a 'suite' of software that can handle several things including AV, malware, and some spyware as well.

Best solution, of course: a proper browser like Firefox 3 or IE7.

Don't know of anything that'll convert to WMV (will your PDA do other file formats?).

That being said, a great ripper is DVDDecrypter and, as far as I can tell, the "industry" standard. You can find encoders on your own.

I need a program that can intercept these traps and send text messages to me and the other members of my IT department in the event of critical failures.

I taped both of my sisters' graduating ceremonies in the last 2 months and I still have a previous vacation to encode as well. All from a Sony MiniDV Camera, what's the best software I can use to get the BEST resolution & quality? I know codecs are probably required as well.

I'm not worried how much the software will cost either, miniDV tapes seems to be expensive around here, I rather pay enough for an encoding software and be able to re-use the tapes.

I was using Windows Movie Maker before that came with Windows and damn, that's horrible stuff.

Answer:Need a good encoding program ^^

Do you want to just encode the video, or do you want to make transitions, effects, etc.?

VirtualDub is a free and great utility for the first variant, but I don't know if it supports DV format (guess not). Didn't you get some software with your camera?

Edit: VirtualDub does support capturing video from camera's so you can use it. For the codec, I suggest xVid (just configure it well)
