I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Is is possible to pin a vbs script to the taskbar? I have a vbs script that opens a putty connection to a server. The reason I use that as opposed to a batch file, is that it keeps the command prompt from opening in the background. I have tried creating a shortcut to the .vbs and pinning that, but it's the same result. If someone could please let me know if this is possible I would greatly appreciate it!

I currently have a .txt file that open up several times a day with Notepad. I want to pin this individual file to my taskbar so that when I click on the file it automatically opens up that file with Notepad. I cannot figure out how to do this.

I have tried making a shortcut to the file and then pinning that shortcut to the taskbar, but when I click on the Notepad icon, it opens up a blank Notepad page instead of the file. I can right click on the icon and then open up the file that way, but I want to be able to just click on the icon and open up the file.

I installed Word 2013 onto a new computer some time ago. Windows 7 Home Premium SP1. Pinning has never worked. I can drag, I can right click and select pin, I can do whatever I want, but nothing appears and it just stays blank. Neither do recently opened items show up on a right click of the icon. Pinning/recent items works on everything else (e.g. Adobe, Explorer), including Outlook. I tried reinstalling but it still wouldn't work. I couldn't find much to go on so I gave up and have done without pinning. Recently I turned on "store and display recently opened items in the start menu and the taskbar" and suddenly I was given another clue as to what the issue is - Excel still shows nothing BUT in Word's recent items I'm getting *Adobe* files (see screenshot, file names removed for privacy): http://i.imgur.com/3wOOU60.png) I can pin adobe files to word's icon. I googled again and I still don't see anything about this but I'm just wondering if anyone has come across this and can help. Thanks in advance!

Hi guys, I'm having a serious problem here. I wanted to add a folder to my windows explorer pinned folders so that I can right click on the windows explorer icon on the taskbar and have my popular folders right there. When I first setup windows 7, I did this by right clicking on the folders I wanted and clicking "Pin to Taskbar." Now, when I right click on folders, there is no such option. Even libraries only have the option to "Pin To Start Menu" which is strange because I had already pinned a library to the windows explorer icon on the task bar, which means that must have been an option before because I don't know how else I would do it. Can someone please explain to me how I can add more folders to the windows explorer icon? This is very frustrating

Answer:Pinning To Taskbar??

Drag folder to the explorer icon on taskbar and it will be pined there.

Question: Pinning To Taskbar

Hi All

I am new to windows 8 but have been finding my way around, One problem I am finding is that some websites I visit to "Pin To Taskbar" seem to only show a blank icon! No name but text but when you change the text it doesn't change on the icon? strange one particular site is the Nationwide bank page cannot seem to get an icon with a name on it?

Anybody got any ideas as to why this happens on only a few sites?

cheers!

Answer:Pinning To Taskbar

Hello Gatewaya, and welcome to Eight Forums.

It depends on what favicon is used by the site for what icon the URL shortcut will have on the middle of it's page icon. I have a icon for Nationwide bank for me, so you might see if deleting your temporary internet files and history and reloading the site may help.

If you like, you could also pin the site in the jump list of the browser's icon on the taskbar.

Question: Pinning to taskbar

Not a huge issue more of just something i was curious about, why cant the "computer" desktop icon be pinned to the taskbar? I know that it is possible to pin the windows explorer but i want it to have the computer icon or at least the c drive icon.

Answer:Pinning to taskbar

I haven't found the reason why it's not possible to pin the Computer icon to the superbar. Maybe it's because it belongs in the explorer - who knows. You can pin it, though, if you really want to. There are some guides already posted around here somewhere. You basically create a shortcut, then point that shortcut to where the My Computer icon points to, then pin it to the superbar.

Today we are having an issue pinning a Shortcut (SpeedTest) we created to the Taskbar. We established

a legitimate icon for the shortcut as well. The trouble is, when we drag the shortcut to the Taskabar we get a

word balloon that reads 'Pin to Opera'. I have searched, read tutorials here, checked 'gpedit.msc' options, etc.

to no avail. Please note attachment. Also, when right clicking the Shortcut, there's no option to 'Pin to

It's throwing me that I have to go into the start checkerboard thing and go searching for the application every time. (Ugh, I don't even know the terminology anymore.) How do I do this? I cannot get some icons, My Computer, Control Panel etc., to pin to the taskbar in W7. It keeps pinning them to Windows Explorer.

I have just bought a new computer running W7 because my old computer running XP suffered from old age.

In XP all you had to do was click on the icon, unlock the task bar, and drag the icon to the taskbar, but that doesn't work in W7

So how do you pin icons to the taskbar in W7.

Thanks.

Hi,

I'm currently having a problem where pinning any kind of shortcut to the taskbar via its context menu doesn't do anything. That is, a pin doesn't appear on the taskbar, and in the location '%AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar' no shortcut file is created.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 Professional from Windows 7 Professional. That may be the cause.
Another potential factor is that previously, I have followed this guide (using both methods described) in order to further customize my system. The reason I mention that is because in researching I read the answer posted here. Unfortunately, I have not been able to fix the problem by undoing the first method of that guide; also there is no way to undo the second method of that guide, and I have been unsuccessful in fixing the problem by following the solution that answer describes (I couldn't find the 'Inkfile' folder). By the way, is it wrong that the 'link' key I deleted in following the process to undo the first method hasn't reappeared after restarting?

I'm not sure what to try next.
I would really appreciate some help... sorry to be foolish enough to try and customize my system a bit, if that is what caused this issue.
For now, I guess I'll have to use shortcut toolbars on my taskbar. Or is there a registry location where I can at least go in and, say, add a key with a shortcut address and icon address to add a pin with those properties?

Thanks in advance,
Felewin

I know about the tutorial explaining what to do using the toolbar method, but I don't like the separator between the Recycle Bin and the rest of the icons. There is another recommended method of pinning the Recycle Bin by creating a shortcut and using shell:recyclebinfolder, but this stopped working. In fact, all my folder shortcuts I created and pinned to the taskbar by using explorer.exe in the target stopped working.

Is there any other working methods out there so that I can put the Recycle Bin icon anywhere I want on the taskbar without seeing the separator?

I installed Windows 7 recently and am finally making it look and behave the way I like except for one thing I would appreciate help with.

You see, I'm on dial-up... Don't laugh it's still the only thing available where I live.

When I had Windows Vista and before that I always had shortcut icon in my taskbar I could click on to connect or to check the state of my connection. Now I have to click on the Network Sharing Center in the right hand corner, and it takes me 3 more clicks before I'm finally connected. I have to go through the same routine to check if I'm still connected or what speed I connected at. Also, I don't always manage to connect on the first try so I have to go through that routine many times. I did manage to create a shortcut by opening Adapter Settings and creating one from there but the problem is Windows 7 wont let me pin that shortcut to the taskbar. I don't know what is worse... Having to go through the 3 or 4 cliks to connect, or having to stare at that huge dial-up shortcut all the time on my otherwise pristine desk top? Oh, and thanks for the little file that allowed me to remove the Libraries Icon from my desktop. Was really happy to find that little gem.

Any suggestion with my current problem would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone,

First post here and thanks for allowing me to be a part of the community!

My first question is while attempting to pin a website to the task bar in Edge I followed the directions and selected the "3 dots menu" and then selected "open with IE" option as instructed.

When I click on the webpage icon in the task bar the site indeed comes up but it is in Internet Explorer rather than Edge. Is there any way I can pin the site to the task bar and have it launch in Edge rather than IE? I understand it opens in IE because I opened the website in Edge and then told it to open with IE.

When I tried pinning the tab to the task bar in Edge I got the universal red circle with the line through it so I couldn't pin it unless I opened it in IE.

Ive noticed when I pin a website to the Start Menu that it will open in Edge. Is it not possible to have this happen by using the task bar?

Thanks so much for your help.

Appreciate interacting with you folks very much.

best,

rick

Something weird has happened to my taskbar. I have a few programs pinned there and everything was okay. Then today I unpinned Firefox from there because I wanted to change the icon I was using. After deciding I didn't like it I tried to go back to the one I was using but when I pinned it back to the task bar this problem occurred:

As you can see when I click on the silver Firefox icon, it opens up a new firefox icon (default icon) in a separate place, taking up unnecessary space. I can't figure out how to make it go back to the way it was where everything stayed within the silver icon.

Answer:Strange problem with pinning an icon to taskbar

It is indeed the browser being opened but the problem is it used to open up within the silver icon (the default firefox icon you see to the right has basically taken its place). It's a bit of an annoyance because it takes up the little space I have on my taskbar before things start getting combined and messy.

Sorry if what I'm explaining is confusing, it would probably be easier to show with a video or something.

Question: Movie pinning?

Hi all.

I have on the taskbar of my screen a folder that takes me to things I have recently done or used and I also have pinned things in the folder so that when I right click it it gives me the option of going straight to stuff like 'Music' , 'Vuze Downloads' and 'Downloads.

It's a great shortcut for me to reach all the things that I want without having to go searching through menu's all the time.

The problem is is that I have recently unpinned my 'Movies' folder and I do not know how to pin it back.

Can anyone help me out on this, I'd be grateful.

Cheers, all the best, Ste.

Cheers, all the best, Ste.

Can you post a screenshot of your taskbar please.

If this is a toolbar then you need to find the "Movies" folder and put it in the toolbar folder.

The only icon I am having difficulty with is the "control panel" icon. When I click pin to start everything goes as planned except the icon will not appear in start. I have pinned and un-pinned multiple times. I have even tried to drag it over. No luck. I can pin any other app.

Answer:Not pinning to start

Hi, create and test a shortcut as per the first picture
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4...dows-10-a.html
It should have the appropriate icon.

Test it (double click).

Rt click it and you can pin to start as a tile.

(Other ways to open the CP: Windows key + X, click Control Panel works, Windows key + R, control panel, Type 'contr' in the Cortana search field
for example).

I prefer this using Classic Shell (free):

I personally just think it complicates things. I haven't really used the feature, but from what i've read it just adds the # of clicks you gotta make to reach the window you want.

The only time i'd see it useful is if i had a TON of windows of the same program open, like lets say 5+. Hopefully there is a way to set the threshold to where it goes into PIN mode.

Question: Pinning Issues

Hi guys,

I did a quick search and looked at the tutorial but I couldn't find my problem anyway, I hope it hasn't been covered already.

Anyway, I just updated my iTunes and for some reason (as always) the shortcut resets itself and my current pinned shortcut is useless. So I deleted it and pinned the new iTunes shortcut back to the taskbar but now when I open iTunes I get two icons on my taskbar: one to start iTunes and one for the iTunes program that is running. Before I replaced the shortcut, and for my other shortcuts, I always only had one icon for both. Here's a screenshot that better illustrates the problem:

Answer:Pinning Issues

Hello Smeg, and welcome to Seven Forums.

See if this may help. Unpin both iTunes icons on the taskbar. Now open iTunes, and right click on the icon on the taskbar for it and click on "Pin this program to taskbar" instead of from the shortcut.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Question: Pinning vertically

You can pin programs to the Win7 task bar, but I want to have a pop-up that I can pin a few programs within the vertical alignment of a pinned program. If you pin a program beside the start button and you want to pin another program it would go to the right of the task bar. I want to pin it vertically so I click on a part of the task bar and I have a list of custom programs vertically.

Answer:Pinning vertically

You can create custom jumplist (menu, which pops up on right click on pinned item) and put your custom programs in such jumplist.

Using Windows XP, one can move anything on the desktop to the task bar. Why did the brilliant people at Microsoft change this? Using XP, I can pin a new folder to the task bar and then fill it with programs, files, etc. It didn't care. For example, using XP, I have a taskbar icon named MEDIA. When I click on it, a window opens with several icons inside, like Windows Movie Maker, Are Explosion Calendar Maker, Quick Time Player, VLC Media Player and so on.

This can't be easily done using Windows 7. Is there a way I can do this? I really don't need a whole bunch of icons on my taskbar.

Any answers beyond the dumb stuff that comes back on Google Search?

Thanks a bunch

I am not sure if this is a malware problem, but I am vary suspicious that it is. I was given a computer and told it was running so slow as to be unusable and could I check it for viruses. The procedure that I follow when asked to do this is to boot to safe mode and run;

MalwareBytes (2.0.4.1028)
AdwCleaner (4.201)
HitmandPro

All of these found makware with MalwareBytes reporting several hundred objects, many of which it listed as Trojans. Once I did this the system seemed to be running faster and I rebooted to normal. Again it seemed fine but after a few minutes it just ground to a halt and became unusable. I again booted to safe mode and with one exception, it run fine. That exception was windows explorer which ran very slow, but did run. I then tried safe mode with network. This duplicated normal mode and quickly ground to a halt. I then retried safe mode with network, but with the network cable unplugged. This time it performed normally. I then plugged the network cable in and it ground to a halt again. Remove the cable and it returned to normal. I next ran task manager and saw that on startup there were 7 processes showing;

conhost.exe
csrss.exe
ctfmon.exe
dllhost.exe
dllhost.exe
explorer.exe
taskmgr.exe
winlogon.exe

The CPU usage was ~6%. When I plugged the network cable in these processes started to duplicate, with 5 conhosts and at least 2 of the others and the CPU usage went to 100% and stayed pinned there. If I pulled the cable the process... Read more

After a great deal of fiddling I have succeeded in getting Outlook to reflect my old Vista Mail, meaning I can now see my mail. trouble is that I have to connect to the internet then select Outlook from my Google taskbar and finally select my old Mail account. Is it possible to create a charm so that all I have to do is click on it in Start?

Answer:Pinning Outlook to Start

Hello Kafka,

If this is a website for online email, than you could use the tutorial below to pin the website to your Start screen if you like.

If not, then you could pin the .exe file or shortcut of Outlook to your Start screen as well.

I used to be able to pin the audio settings using the Nokia folder app. Now that it has been removed from the store, is there a way to get audio settings back? I tried looking for a start screen customization app that has it and came up short. I also remember there's a way to look up the app's windows store ID and somehow have an another app recall it. What does the forum think?

For some shortcuts, you may have noticed that you do not have the ability to pin them to taskbar. Usually, there is a workaround by creating your own shortcut by following a guide like this one and then substituting My Computer for other icons by using the list seen here.

The problem is, this list is very short and I am sure you can think of many other shortcuts that you are not able to add that you would want to. My example would be the Sound shortcut in the Control Panel (actually I think all of the shortcuts in the control panel).

I was just wondering if anyone knew how to pin shortcuts to items within the control panel? Or knows of a longer list then the one above?

Thanks

Answer:Windows 7 - Pinning Shorcuts

You can use the new Control Panel NameSpaces.

%systemroot%\system32\control.exe /name Microsoft.SoundClick to expand...

You can also do it the old way:
%systemroot%\system32\control.exe mmsys.cplClick to expand...

If you want to access the Recording tab:
%systemroot%\system32\control.exe mmsys.cpl,,1Click to expand...

Change that to 2 for the Sound tab, and so forth.

In vista on the left pane in explorer it was split between the regular file navigation and a favorites area at the top. The favorites was always available and allows for you to click on your most used folders faster. In Vista the favorites isn't pinned up there anymore. Any one know of a way around this? Is there anyway to remove that as a option from right clicking of the taskbar icon menu?

Thanks

Answer:Can I get ride of Pinning option?

Yes, don't pin it there.

By pinning, however, you get a full history of the Word, IE, etc. program's use by rightclicking.

I find it the place to pin freq used programs, leaving active files to the desktop.

Okay. I had IE9 beta since release. So far VERY Impressed buy it. Only for the past few days i have been getting this problem.. Basically the Facebook logo does not appear correctly when i pin Facebook to my "Superbar". This is just for Facebook and does not apply for other pinable websites as shown in the picture, Twitter is working as it should.

Jumplist shortcuts are still working fine, the specific icons for each of the jumplist shortcuts are working correctly. I have tried doing a number of things;

-Waiting for it to blow over (recently twitter changed their icon and that took about a day for it to start appearing properly)

-Re/Uninstalling IE9

-Deleting ALL Browser information/History

Has anyone got any idea how to fix this? i have done some light searching around on the Internet for this but did not find anything. Thank you

I have used pinning for a long time. With Windows 10, it appears that there is something broken with my installation, or Windows 10 in general.
I pin several network folders to windows explorer taskbar.  In Windows 8, they used to be able to be moved up and down.
I cannot get this to function correctly in Windows 10.  I have 6 folder pins on the taskbar for explorer, and I can't reorder them without unpinning all of them, and repinning them in the order I want.  Then if I want to reorder them again, because
of adding another folder, I'd have to unpin and repin again.
Is there a setting that I have that is locking this functionality?  Can't imagine that MS would make this feature go away.
Doesn't work for Word either.  The pinned items at top won't move, neither will the frequent items below.
Thanks.

When I try to pin something to the start using the right click on application/folder nothing happens. It looks like it should be pinned in to the start, but nothing changes in there. The things appear in the start after the restart of OS.
The same problem is with the pinned apps. When I press right mouse button on something in the start menu than unpin it doesn't disappear. But when I press it again it says "Pin to Start" like it's not pinned, but it is :O

Hey all,

I'm surprised that such an obvious bug is still present till now in Win10, at least in my case. For some reason, pinning a Desktop shortcut to the Start Menu (right-clicking on it -> Pin to Start Menu) for the first time after (re)booting Windows works normally, but if you unpin it and want to pin it again to the Start Menu, it won't appear there again. You'd have to reboot Windows and pin it again to make it appear.

This seems to only happen with pinning Desktop icons of Third party apps (in my case RealTemp for example).

Is this happening to others as well?

Answer:Pinning to Start Menu very buggy

Ideally it should not be necessary even to do that, as, having installed the desktop program and assuming you allowed it to create start menu shortcuts, they would already appear in the Start Menu.

I've just tried it, and can unpin and repin freely - it appears as a tile in Win 10's start menu.
The context menu entry 'Pin to Start' changes to 'Unpin... if the shortcut is already pinned.

This is a two part question. Firstly it appears that windows 7 does not let you pin programs to the taskbar unless they are in c: drive. does anyone know of a workaround or registry hack for this? I can make a shortcut on c: and then pin the shortcut but then when I launch I have two icons.

I want to run firefox portable from a ramdrive because my netbook has horribly slow ssd drive. So I have come up with what I think will work

in startup directory I have a shortcut to
C:\Windows\System32\xcopy.exe c:\FirefoxPortable z:\FirefoxPortable /s /y

now I need to have a shortcut to write back to c: drive
C:\Windows\System32\xcopy.exe z:\FirefoxPortable c:\FirefoxPortable /s /y

Is there a way I can make that command run on shutdown?

Answer:Pinning from other drive? Command on shutdown?

Have fun! With games that run live off of a cd or dvd the desktop shortcut created will lose the game's original icon once the disk is removed from the drive. Any configurations directed to any removable source are fragile to start with.

Once you pin a shortcut onto the taskbar the one on the desktop can be deleted since the copy then seen on the taskbar is still seeing the executable being directed to there. The best way to run any browser as well as any program is to install it directly onto the version of Windows or OS being run since that will see all necessary registry values created by the installer.

then on the DB9F/RJ-45,Modular Adaptor

1-orange
3-green
5-blue

colors are left are red,yellow,white,black

then the one I made from cat 5 goes like this:
1-orange
3-green
5-blue
2- blue/white
4- green/white
7- brown
8- brown/white
9- white/orange
6- not in use

Hi everyone,

this is my first post and I have been doing a lot of searching to try to solve this issue myself but so far no luck. I am pretty good with computers but not an uber tech guy so hopefully I follow the rules and get this right.

Issue:
So I noticed recently that my Dell i5 2.4 Quad Core's fan was running really loud and fast even when just surfing the web. It didn't dawn on me that it probably meant the CPU was working hard and it shouldn't be. So I checked resource manager and my intel turbo boost was pinging a constant 108-110% with me doing literally nothing on the machine. When it first boots up its running very quiet and cool and processors are "parked". Service mgr doesn't detect anything running crazy. Within 2 minutes of opening IE or Chrome, the services.exe goes nuts and pins my CPUs at max. I am thinking the box is infected with something because every no and again when I am in yahoo and search something, some re-direct happens to a site I totally didn't request. Then I close it, it usually just goes away. But the processors continue to chug and get very hot. 70 C or higher. All 4 cores are working too notjust two.

Anyway I ran hijackthis and the log is pasted below. I think this is a 64 bit system so I can't run that other program. I also ran superspyware (or whatever its called) and it found like 300 tracking cookings which I removed but no bad processes. Something has to be infecting this once it recognizes ... Read more

I have a serial cable modem that haves D25 and only colors I see on this cable is Black,Red,Brown,Yellow,Orange and I would like to pair it up to a RJ45 data jack but I dont know what colors go to what and I am just wondering if anybody can help me out for this.

Fyi this is for external 56k modem.

Answer:Need help on pinning D25 to rj45 data jack

If you are just hooking it up to a regular serial port, get the matching RJ45 to DB9 connector and wire both ends the same. If you are connecting to a router, or perhaps your DECserver 90 you need to follow their pinout.

So i think some random clicks go this like it was.... it's annoying as hell.

It looks like a drive of mine got somehow linked or snapped to the side bar outside of "this PC"

There are no options to remove it when I right click, anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of it? The same drive also shows up under "this PC" which is how I want it.

Answer:Weird pinning of drive in Win 10 File explorer.

Are you sure drive W: is not an external drive (or marked a removable?) By default Windows 10 will show external/removable drives separately below "This PC" as well as under "This PC" just like you are seeing.

I am not aware of any way to change this behavior but I have found it quite handy a few times now for quickly accessing external hard drives so I am not so sure I would want to change it personally anyway.

If it is an internal drive then I am not sure what would be going on.

I cannot get EMET 5.2 certificate pinning to work in Windows 10.
When I test it by pinning an invalid Root CA certificate to the website, EMET does not block website access in Windows 10 like it does in Windows 8.1
Has EMET certificate pinning been disabled in Windows 10 ? If so, has this functionality been superceded by a better technique ?

I have searched high and low, and this is the only anecdotal reference to this I can find:
"Windows 10 does not use certificate pinning, means someone can easily apply a man-in-the-middle-attack for each Microsoft cloud-access for example"

When pinning web pages to the Start, invariably the resultant icons all look the same. eg. same colour and the title cannot be changed to what I'd like it to be. Any ideas to make them more individual?
