Issues with screen brightness during startup

Question: Issues with screen brightness during startup

In the last week I've been having two new issues with my computer that I hadn't previously experienced. The major one was related to my wireless adapter and with the help of others on the network connection forum have discovered it was being caused by a conflict with Norton 360.

The second is related to my screen auto dimming the moment of my first key strike when entering my password. I am running a HP pavilion dv6t-7000 on Windows 7. I have turned off the power saving feature on my Intel graphics control panel. Any ideas on what could be causing this would be much appreciated as it is annoying to have to adjust the brightness every time I turn on the computer.

Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Issues with screen brightness during startup

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Issues with screen brightness during startup

Does it react the same plugged in or with battery only?

I've noticed this on my new X1: Upon bootup, screen brightness is at max but when the login screen comes up it dials down the brightness with no way of turning it back up.  My brightness levels are showing max, yet I know the screen is not as bright as when the laptop boots up.  Anyone else notice this? Update: I found out that disabling the ambient light sensor significantly increased brightness level.  Guess that was an easy fix.

I've noticed this on our company's new T510's we're getting.  When you start them up, the screens look to be full brightness.  But after a few seconds, the screen dims half way or so and you must manually Fn+[Home] to make it brighter. How do you change the default way this is set up so that it doesn't go dim after a few minutes?  Thanks.

I bought my F50 Qosmio less then a year ago in Croatia. The first day i turned it on i had problems already.

When the laptop was turning on, before the BIOS booting screen, lines and weird patterns appeared on the screen and then the laptop blocked itself, and restarted.
This happened every 4-5 times i turned it on, sometimes during restart also.

Also when i had a black wallpaper, in the middle of the screen you could see as if the screen was dirty, lines that are in the screen that are not dirt or anything that you can clean.

Finally after some time i sent the laptop to the service and they said the Graphics card had gone bad. So they replaced it. I also mentioned about the "dirt lines" that can be seen when a darker background was on the screen. They replaced the graphics card but they didnt say anything about the "dirt lines" in the screen.

Now, a week ago, i am having problems with the screen. The screen brightness is going crazy, for example when i am browsing the web, the screen goes a little bit darker then brighter and darker and brighter and it goes like this really fast. And this doesn't happen only when i browse the web. It happens when i watch a movie or do anything.

Its unbelievable, that the Qosmio is giving me so much trouble.

When i sent my laptop last time to the service provider in Croatia they were extremely impolite and they did not resolve all my issues. They also said that the graphics card had gone bad be... Read more

Answer:Qosmio F50 - Screen brightness issues

> Now that i am having problems with the screen brightness going crazy i am unsure what to do.

Well, I think you should contact the ASP technician again and should explain your issue and should say that this strange screen behavior still persists and has not been resolved in first attempt.

A friend of mine is an owner of Qosmio F50 (don?t know exactly the model number) and he is very satisfied. It?s really a great notebook supporting many different multimedia features and he didn?t notice any graphic or screen problems.

As I said above; get in contact with the ASP in order to get the hardware checked.

I've had my U430 for two years now, but I've the brightness and general 'punchiness' of the screen has been low, but I don't remmeber it being this way before. It is especially noticable when the laptop is next to an iPad or mobile phone, with the whites on those screens are much whiter, while the laptop looks grey in comparison. The screen brightness is set to full on the slider within Windows and using the hotkeys on the keyboard. Restoring  the laptop hasn't resolved the issue. Any help would be very much appreciated!

I've attached a photo to help demonstrate my issue.

hi guys, hope someone has seen this before and can point me in the right direction. have set up dual boot on this system (t440s), windows 8 partition isup and running. was in the middle of installing drivers and programs for windows 7 partition, and after one of the restarts this is happening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apSB8Ci45DQ stays like that indefinitely, wont start up. I have tried going into safe mode and uninstalling programs one by one to find out which one caused this, but i'm running out of things to uninstall and it's still like that.

Answer:Screen brightness rapidly fluctuating and wont startup

ended up fixing this with just doing a system restore, may have been the intel HD drivers i downloaded from the lenovo site, downloaded from intel site and all working ok

Screen brightness issues (software) I have had the following symptoms after waking up from both standby and hibernate, but mostly hibernate:1.LCD is changing colors of the pixels, but backlight is completley off.2.LCD brightness is at minimum level, and using the hot keys (Fn + up arrrow) causes popup to indicate brightness change but screen remains at same dim level.3.LCD brightness is dim and using the (Fn + arrow keys) does not result in either screen brightness chaning or popup indicating change. Because of this I have learned not to leave any unsaved data if I'm going to sleep or hibernate machine because of the risk of condition 1. Any known resolution before I blitz the lenovo install do a clean install. Doing this I presume will rely soley on the built in win7 brightness management as it does on my Acer. -EVRE

I have just completed a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and all went well except for the screen brightness issue. Anyone have any ideas where I can simply increase this as I have searched everywhere for screen brightness, even BIOS for any setting for display. I have latest update to display driver. I have two other laptops and each shows much brighter than this one and I am surely disappointed in this display. Not sure if it is because this screen is touch enabled and also works off keyboard that could be the issue and a separate setting could be involved on the touch side of the display as it does work with a stylus pen or touch also. thanks and   I hope I can get this brightness to increase somewhat as it is too hazy for me.

I had my U410 updated to window 8, so far everything worked well except for the wireless connection and screen brightness control. It takes me up to 10 minutes to connect to the wireless network every time I start the computer. Since I always keep my computer in sleep mode, the wireless issue is acceptable. As for the screen brightness control, I was not able to adjust the screen brightness in any way. I've turned off the adaptive brightness, tried uninstall the driver of video card and reinstall it, but I couldn't change the brightness of the screen any however. Is anyone having the same probelm or knwo anything about how to solve it? Thanks.

Hey guys, Last night, I installed Windows 7 on my t400. Overall, it went pretty smoothly, but I do have to issues now that I don't know how to fix. Spell CheckFirst, for some odd reason, after my computer wakes up from sleep mode, the task bar is often (but not always) invisible. Usually, after about 10 minutes, it shows back up. Anyone had this problem? Any idea how to fix it?  Second, my screen brightness controls have changed. Prior to the 7 install, when I would dim the screen, a visible icon representing the brightness level appeared at the bottom of my screen (it was green, like the volume indicator). Now, when I dim, this no longer appears. Also, the screen does not get nearly as dim as it used to. I don't know why this changed, but obviously I can't save power like I used to and if I'm using it in a dark room, it is too bright now. Anyone had this problem? Know how to fix it? Thanks for any suggestions!

I am having a ton of issues with the on screen brightness display and the brightness controls in general on my windows 7 e545.  The problem seems to happen anytime I open the computer up from sleep mode.  In order to regain brightness control I have to reboot the machine.  I have done a lot of google searching and have updated the bios and hotkey drivers that everyone recommends but this has not helped.  Anyone have any idea? I am still within my 30 day window and am seriously considering sending it back.

Hi
I have Dell Inspiron13 7000 series laptop.Everything was working fine until 2 weeks back.
Suddenly I wasn't able to use F11/F12 keys to controll brightness.Even if I clicked I wasn't getting the actual brightness bar.I checked some blogs and youtube videos, which helped me and it fixed my issue.
Suddenly after almost a week or so, I am getting another issue.I can scroll up or down the brightness however it doesn't change any brightness level.Right now it is too bright but I can't change it.
Has anyone been facing this issue or resolved this?
Laptop was in perfectly operating condition before.I have been getting these issues recently after regular windows update.

Additional to my other issue with the display brightness I've got also this question: In battery mode it seems that the display brightness is automaticly adjusted by the lightness of the screen content. For exampe if I start a program with a dark background the display becomes a little bit darker. In contrast, a brighter background makes the screen a little brighter. It isn't that strong like a tap on F7 or F8 - just a little bit. Of course it's a nice feature. But for me who uses a lot of applications at the same time it is a bit annoying. Can someone give me a hint where I can turn that feature off? Didn't find anything in the energy settings. Thomas

My screen brightness using FN+F11/F12 and also in the advanced power settings slider won't adjust the screen to anything other than brightness and minimum or brightness to 100% when I move the slider.  It shows the percentage moving up and down, but the screen stays 100% until I'm on the lowest setting,  then it goes right to minimum.  I received a bunch of Lenovo updates on the first Wednesday of this month and I've had several issues since then, I tried reverting back to previous drivers, but it made no difference, so I'm back on the latest drivers.

Having a very difficult time fixing a windows 7 machine, I have spent quite a while on this and still have no idea what the problem is!

Every time i boot up into windows normally or "Safe Mode with Networking" the computer will go blue screen... this happens at varying times, including before i finish logging in, to about 3 minutes after booting up.

I was told that this machine took updates a day or two before it started happening.

What i've done so far:

diabled network card
restore point
uninstall graphics drivers and unplug video card (used integrated graphics)
pulled ram out and inserted one at a time
browsed through some logs including the SF stuff
- lots of errors from sidebyside adobe
- some indexing errors which i think may have come up after it started blue screening

I wasnt using this computer when it started happening and i do not really trust the story of the person it started happening to (user ignorance as well as just might not being honest).

The BBCP codes seem to be different from BS to BS

Any help would be appreciated!

EDIT:

The machine will not blue screen while in safe mode

Ok, so I recently brought my computer back to life after some major issues. It is still having a slew of problems and I can't seem to fix them. I am running windows XP with SP3 installed. Firstly, I started having a problem where when i started up my computer, sometimes the monitor would turn into an orange, blinking screen, with a lighter bar of orange at the top of the monitor. It only did this about a minute or two after windows had loaded up. The only way to fix it was to press the button for shutdown and then quickly turn it back on again. It did this every other shutdown.
Next, i started getting slowdown issues all throughout my computer. One day, after I shutdown my computer, I booted it back up and it said Windows cannot find the file C:/windows/System32/config/system
I tried to use the recovery disk and it didn't work because a BSOD showed up whenever i selected the drive with windows on it. I think it said something like PAGE_FILE_UNPAGED_AREA. I don't think that was it exactly, but it was something like that. Basically, i did a lot of things other people said would work and they didn't work. The only thing that managed to get my computer up and running again was to use a 3rd party boot disk, BartPE and to restore a few old registry files that had been corrupted. So, now we get to my current problem...

Hi,

I have encountered a rather unique problem and require some advice and/or help.
Earlier this week I built a machine for an office based company, everything went smoothly; the specs are below.

i5 4570
ASRock Z87-PRO4
SanDisk Ultra Plus 256GB SSD <--- The problem (?)
GTX 660
Barracuda 2TB HDD
8GB G.Skill Ripjaws RAM
Running Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

I installed some software they wanted me to install- including a pirated version of Lightroom (possibly containing a virus not 100% sure). They called me back a few days later telling me that the machine was broken, I looked into it and found that the machine would not boot up and would hang on the "starting windows screen" I tried using startup repair when prompted after I had restarted the computer, but it too would hang for a seemingly indefinite amount of time (Im talking like 5+ hours).

I googled around and started troubleshooting, finally reaching a conclusion that the 256 SSD I was booting off was either corrupt or broken or somehow ridden with viruses (not likely).

I took the SSD out and reinstalled windows onto the HDD- The company ended up reasonably happy.

I removed the problematic drive and took it home to try and restore or secure erase it by using it as a slave on my own computer. Something interesting occurred, my own computer would also hang on the "starting windows" screen, even though I wasn't booting off the drive, but rather just having it con... Read more

Answer:Windows hangs on startup screen, SSD related issues.

If a company is asking you to install expensive pirated software on its PC then it is placing itself and you at risk for prosecution. This is because vendors do target commercial pirates for prosecution. You are abetting a serious crime.

I would explain this to them and have them buy a license for the software, or you are legally obligated to report it to avoid being a party to the crime.

Once this is resolved we will help you with the other issues. This is by far the most serious and must be resolved before we can help further.

So for the last few days I've been trying to learn/figure this out, and I've had no luck. My wife and I purchased two HTC Windows 8 phones that were supposed to be unlocked (through Amazon). Mine works fine without any hitches (I absolutely love it) Her's on the other hand has been nothing but trouble. Here are the problems we are experiencing. We can be sitting right next to each other and she is always on extended network or at best 3G where I will be showing 4G. Her text messages don't send out. Randomly it shows it is on "H" network (couldn't figure that one out either). We have contacted t-mobile several times and they can't seem to find anything wrong on their end. We have switched sim cards and the problem stays on her phone. We've only had the phones a little over a week, but I've found it odd that her startup screen is a Verizion screen even though we are on a T-mobile network. They have had us try to manually setup APN settings, but it does the same thing (staying on extended network and not willing to send texts). It also lacks a lot of options in settings that my phone allows for. I just don't know enough about these phones to have a clue as to what is going on. Is it a bad phone or a bad user? Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

Dear all,

I had a startup issue with my U410 Touch. Just now I restarted it as it was a bit slow. Then I found out that it cannot go to Windows 8 again. The problem is:

I can see the Lenovo logo while it was loading (see pic 1), and then the system told me my computer had a problem and needs to be restarted and repaired (see pic 2). Then it restarted again, and showed"preparing automatic repare" (see pic 3). Then it went to the blackscreen (see pic4)...After several minutes, this process will start again and again....

The problem is, I tried to use One Key Recovery, it didn't work. No matter which option I chose, it went to the same process as shown in pic1. I also tried to go to BIOS, tried F2, FN+F2, F8, FN+F8 buttons, all didn't allow me to go to the setting.

What else can I do? I am in London, and all my thesis files are on the computer. I don't want to lose them as I have no backup. Many thanks in advance.

Regards,

Answer:Lenovo U410 Touch startup issues--Black screen

You have what is commonly called the automatic repair loop problem. If I am in your case my priority are the thesis documents so that I'll try removing the hdd and access it through another unit for the purpose of backing/copy them up. A virus scan will have to be done to see if the problem was created by it. After the backup and scan, I'll try to create or borrow a repair disk with the same version as your unit's OS. Put back the hdd and boot the repair disk. Select command prompt. At command prompt type without quotation "sfc /scannow" to check for corrupted system files and make the necessary repairs if there are any errors found.

Hi,I'm experiencing an issue with screen brightness control on my E520. Whenever I reboot  the system, the brightness turns to maximum, then when I relogin into windows the Power Manager automatically starts up and sets the brightness according to its settings. This works only if the Power Manager's option "Show Power Manager Gauge in task bar" is left ticked, because with that option disabled the Power Manager doesn't automatically adjust the brightness on startup. There are 2 problems:1) on every reboot the brightness is turned to maximum (on every other notebook I've seen the brightness level is kept).2) the Power Manager doesn't work without the green battery meter on taskbar. I want it to automatically adjust the brightness on startup but I don't want the battery meter on the taskbar. I'm on a fresh windows xp installation and I have all the updated drivers (including intel chipset, intel management engine interface, lenovo power management) installed. Has anyone a fix for this?

Answer:E520 brightness on startup

Anyone can provide some support? How can I manage to get the Power Manager working without having the powergauge in the taskbar?

Hey Guys, I installed 7 home premium over Vista home premium two days ago. Everything went very smooth except for one thing: ever since the upgrade, I don't seem to have the same amount of control over my screen brightness as I did before. Specifically, there are two issues.  First, before the install, when I would use the function keys to dim the screen, a green icon would appear and the bottom center of my screen showing how far/close I was to one extreme or the other. This is no longer appearing when I use the function keys.  Second, the screen does not get nearly as dim as it once did. I do have some control over it (I noticed some threads were about having no control) but the dimmest setting now is still too bright when working in a dark room. Also, it eats up the battery faster.  I've tried a couple different driver installs with no success. Any suggestions? Anyone else have this problem? Thanks!

Each time i see the desktop for a second or so before it goes black. One thing i noticed after a while. The screen doesn`t actually go black, but in-fact, very very Dark. If i focus really hard i can just about make out my desktop in the background. Not enough to read anything, or control my cursor, but i can definatley make out icons, also when i right click my mouse i can see a faint "square"  where the option window will have opened from right clicking my mouse.I`m presuming its a graphics issue, but i`m not certain. Any ideas?

Answer:Brightness issues after bootup

1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?2) What happens when you boot to safe mode?

When the laptop starts up, when Reading the BIOS the brightnes on the screen is high and types/letters are like "bold and not very clear".Later, when Windows starts up the screen  has a high britghness, the types/letters are not clear, the color is saturated (it is difficult even to see the mouse pointer on the screen). The laptop intenal second screen (the laptop is dual screen W701ds) works ok.- Ckecked: The power management/plan (is ok).- BIOS is updated- Checking the video card is ok, with PC-Doctor and Windows identify the right card  (nvidia Quadro FX 3800M 1GB).- If using an external monitor, you can see the screen perfectly (video card works ok). ¿Anyone has had been same problem?

Answer:ThinkPad W701ds: High brightness at startup BIOS

Hi, fjdiazal

From what you've described, it sounds like the LCD panel of the main monitor is starting to go bad and will need to be replaced to solve this issue. This is especially true since both an external monitor and the secondary LCD are unaffected. I would recommend contacting Lenovo Support at +34-917-147-833 and discussing a LCD panel replacement with them.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hello all- I updated the BIOS to 2.26 a while ago and ever since then there's no on-screen indication of caps lock on/off, screen brightness or volume when I change it. Since it seemed to be affected by BIOS, I updated again to 2.27 just now, but the problem persists. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for the help. EDIT: Just fixed my own problem. I needed to update the Hotkeys Feature Integration by downloading the utility thingy from this page. Probably wasn't a BIOS thing after all.

On a x201 with clean install of xp sp3 plus all Lenovo drivers upto date [today]; more precisely-thinkpad power management driver 1.64-on screen display 6.60.03-hotkey features patch build 01(00VU01WW) what happens:After having turned off the screen via the hotkey  [fn+f3], when I move the mouse to work again, if I press fn+home/end in order to change the brightness, the on screen pops up ordinarily and the number change as I continue to press the hotkeys but the brightness remains unmodified. However, the hotkey fn+home/end works fine before turning off the screen.

Answer:BUG: Turning off the screen [fn+f3] on x201 disable screen brightness hotkey [fn+home/end]

Hello Okle,

As I understand the display brightness cannot be modified.

Please update the Power Management software to 1.99o and Hotkey Features Integration version to 3.70.0003

If you have Intel HD Graphics then it has to be updated with the version 6.14.10.5384
After having all the updated driver the issue should get resolved.

If the issue persist then check you are running updated BIOS version 1.38

This is really bothering me because I have a few applications which natively have very dark color pallets. When I have an open desktop, which is basically a white wallpaper with a logo on it and the task bar my laptop has the brightness that I want. But then if I bring Sublime Text up and maximize it, Sublime Text has a very dark themed GUI, my screen becomes darker on it's own and I can see thr transition. I have disabled adaptive brightness, I have disabled "Display Power Saving Technology" within the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel (and pretty much everything else in it as well), I have stopped the Adaptive Brightness sensor process, I have uninstalled anything that looked like bloatware or unnecessary-control-panel-ware, and I have updated to the most recent version of the Intel HD drivers. Nothing has resolved this. I'm starting to think the only way to solve this is a fresh OS install and even then I don't know if that will do it. I have literally spent hours trying to figure this out.

Answer:U510 Screen brightness changing based on color of the windows on the screen

After further investigation I don't think it's brightness that is actually being changed but some sort of Automatic Gamma/Hue/Color/Contrast filter that is being implemented and it is basically performing a histogram shrink, making my whites more and more grey depending on how much black is on my screen. I've disabled everything within the Intel HD control panel but I still can't figure out how to stop this from happening. I say this because I tried doing a windows 8 display calibration and when adjusting the Gamma I can move the slider and see a difference but within a second something has automatically adjusted the Gamma and the resulting image I am viewing is always the same. Update: I uninstalled the Intel 4000 drivers, my monitor is currently being run on Microsoft's Generic Display drivers and yet the problem still persists. At least that rules out the Intel drivers. So is it the monitor that was used in the construction of this laptop or another application that is causing me problems. Guess I'll try safe mode. Update 2: Safemode had the problem. Going to make a linux flash drive and try linux see if it does it. Update 3: Got ubuntu on a flash drive and I booted into it only to find that it does the same thing. So either windows and ubuntu are using the exact same drivers or this automatic color correction is built into the hardware and I have absolutely no way of shutting it off. Update 4: Checked inside the BIOS so see if there were any ... Some features of the power manager are not working after a bios update (5.90).
The screen's brightness can't be changed in the power manager, nor the menu system at the top. In the power manager, the slider can be moved, but the brightness is not adjusted. Toshiba's menu system seems to crash upon trying to change the brightness with F6-F7 and the slider won't move.

Furthermore, the screen does not turn off after the set amount of minutes in the power manager.

What's going on? How can this be fixed?
Thanks in advance.

Answer:Satellite A100-812: Screen brightness not working & screen turns off after some time

Hi

Some question; why you have updated the BIOS??
Are you sure you have used the right BIOS???

In my opinion you shouldn?t update anything if the notebook runs properly!!!!

However, try to access the BIOS, set the settings to the ?default? and save the settings before you exit the BIOS.
If it does not help I would recommend recover the notebook with the Toshiba recovery CD.

Hi guys.  I have an Acer Aspire One D257 netbook that's been upgraded to 2gb of ram and a 9-cell battery.I've always been dual-booting 'windows 7 starter x32' (same installation since I got the netbook), and Linux Mint, its been this way for a year and it's been working just fine.  Brightness control seen in both windows and Linux, brightness shortcut (FN+left/right) has also been working in both windows and Linux.Well recently, my screen cracked and I brought my laptop over to a laptop hardware repair store, and they have replaced the screen on my unit.  When I got the laptop back, I immediately noticed two side effects.--- The laptop screen's brightness is stuck at 100% power while it's running on AC power (when the laptop is powered off, the screen stays on at full power, showing a white screen)  This doesn't bother me as much, and I doubt this is a software issue.---  Whenever I boot into my windows, I don't have control over the brightness.  Windows doesn't have the brightness sliders, and the FN shortcuts doesn't change the brightness either.  However when I am in the BIOS, the FN shortcuts allow me to adjust the brightness.  When I'm in my Linux, the FN brightness shortcuts work, and the brightness slider is shown and works. So I'm focusing on the issue #2.  In the case of that issue, I immediately think of it being a driver issue, meaning I should re-install th... Answer:Netbook screen brightness control stopped working since screen replacement

This driver is likely part of a utility pack for the system, which should also be in the listing of available downloads from Acer.My Toshiba Netbook has the Windows control sliders greyed out and I found that I had to adjust this using the Toshiba Utility instead which gave options for screen brightness under different battery life % and when plugged into wall etc.My guess is that your Acer has a similar tool that has these features and that is why you cant just adjust it from Windows display interface options. The display driver alone will not contain this tool. The strange thing is that, how did this tool get disabled by the  cracked screen and screen replacement. This would be something intentional. Have you contacted the place that serviced your computer to see what they have to say about this issue? Maybe they can fix this for you since they may have disabled it etc.

I recently replaced the broken screen in my T450s. The new screen is working beautifully, however it is stuck at maximum brightness. The brightness icon under Power Options is likewise greyed out. I have tried: Rebooting (duh)Reinstalling drivers for integrated Intel 5500 GraphicsUsing Microsoft Basic Display AdapterUpgrading BIOS to latest version I assume this is a BIOS issue rather than a driver issue, but I'm not very savvy when it comes to BIOS tinkering. Suggestions?

I re-installed Windows 7 64-bit on my Thinkpad X201 (3249-2EU).  Let me tell you it runs a million times faster now!  But the problem is I re-installed all drivers and software, and now I cannot adjust the screen brightness or get on-screen display to fully work. There seems to be some conflict between the Hotkey software and the Power Manager/Power Management Driver. After reading forum posts in the W500 and W520 section I tried troubleshooting using their suggestions.  To troubleshoot I tried this:I uninstalled (in order) the display drivers, Power Manager software, power management drivers. I uninstalled Hotkey features and Utility Patch software.  Then, I re-installed power management drivers and Power Manager software.  At this point, I can adjust the screen brightness but there is no on-screen display showing the brightness. After I install the Hotkey software, I can no longer adjust screen brightness.  However, volume changes are displayed on-screen. Any suggestions on how I can adjust screen brightness, see screen brightness on-screen and see volume controls on-screen all at the same time??? Also, not sure if this is a related issue, but the bluetooth indicator light is always on.  I have uninstalled the Bluetooth drivers and changed settings so that it will not accept incoming bluetooth devices.  What gives?

Answer:x201 can't adjust screen brightness or get on-screen display working

Another thing to add: Windows Update keeps trying to do an "important" (i.e., not optional) update to "Thinkpad PM Device" and it keeps failing.  I'm guessing the Power Management (PM) device drivers are corrupted and it won't update now.  I've uninstalled, then re-installed the drivers and this update keeps failing.

I recently upgraded my ATI Radeon HD 4850 to a GTX 560 ti. After swapping out the hardware I removed my old ATI drivers ( with some difficulty. CCC didnt want to go for some reason but after updating to the newest CCC i was able to uninstall ), then I went to the Nvidia website and downloaded new drivers for the 560. I was also forced to buy a new power supply as my old one could not support the new card, I went with a corsair TX 750w because it had extremely good reviews on newegg. Since these changes I have been having an issue where the brightness on my monitor dims when I'm playing certain games and I come to dark areas, or go into the game menus. Ive noticed this on Crysis, Crysis Warhead, Dead Space 2, and Mass Effect 2. Right now I have Crysis Warhead loaded, and I've got it sitting in the "Options""System Settings" menu, under "Graphics" and my brightness is pulsing in and out, slowly getting brighter, then fading (possibly to the game music?). With other games when you enter a dark hallway for example, the screen will fade so dark you can barely see, then come back once you progress farther thru the game. At first I thought this was just an issue with the new video card so i sent i back only to find that wasnt the problem =(. Ive since hooked my computer into my HD LED/LCD TV and the problem seemed gone, so I went and bought an LG w2240, and the problem is back. Im really at a loss here, I've removed all my Nvidia drivers,... Read more

Hi, I've had my X1 Yoga for about two months now, running Windows 10 Enterprise Insider Preview 1607 (build 14915.1000).Prior to joining the Windows 10 Insider Preview program (it took about a week for it to update to the insider preview builds from the official builds), I had severe issues with the brightness control of my OLED screen. I could not turn the brightness up to the higher settings (90-100%), because the screen would become entirely black. Also, somewhere in the range of 75%-95% brightness, the screen would be completely blue, as if no other colors were displayed in the OLED panel. This was of course unusable. Coupled with the automatic display brightness adjustments it gave a really crappy experience, as the brightness could suddenly automatically be turned up really high (into the unusable blue-then-black range), unless the display was set to a really low brightness setting. On several occasions I thought the computer had locked up/died on me after disconnecting it from my OneLink+ dock, only to later realize that I could just lower the brightness to force the display back into actually showing something.  Sometime after getting the first Insider Preview builds, which was also accompanied by some Lenovo updates (unfortunately probably masking what is the real cause of this issue), I noticed I couldn't actually change the display brightness at all anymore. It's stuck! This issue persists, and I have been unable to change the disp... Read more

I bought a Samsung NP740UU3E-A01UB from Best Buy and so far I am loving it with the exception of the adaptive brightness BS! I have disabled it in the BIOS, Charm menu, Power settings & disabled the sensor monitor setting in the services.msc area. As well as disabled the adaptive contrast enhancement in the Intel Graphics & Media Control Panel. Pulling my hair out with this setting. I would love to get F1 & F2 to be able to control the brightness. As it stands whenever the laptop is in any bright light (outside) the screen dims almost to unusable settings. Is there a specific order for disabling this setting? Over on NBR it seems hit and miss but doing the steps I listed seemed to work for most people.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated. Samsung/MS buried this setting deep!

Hi everyone, I am using an X61 Tablet under Windows 7 Ultimate wtih fully updated bios/power manager/video card drivers.  I have been trying to solve the following problem for months now, to no avail; I've checked this forum and none of the recommended fixes work. When I start up my laptop, connected via VGA to an external monitor, the brightness on the laptop screen is always dim.  I go into the power manager and adjust the screen brightness, restart the machine, and the laptop screen is dim again, and the screen brightness has reverted.  I have tried these changes from both Lenovo Power Manager 3 and the Windows 7 power manager.  I've tried changing multiple options, even saving my own power schema, and the result is always the same Any help or clues you can give me would be very much appreciated!

My issue is that every time the laptop comes out of sleep mode the display is so dark I can hardly see it. This can be corrected if I restart or hibernate the system. Also, I cannot adjust the brightness on my system: plugged in or not, using the Lenovo power manager, the windows power manager, or the Fn keyboard shortcuts. All of these yield no results.

Hi,

After having issues with my W7-64 bit HP Envy 15 laptop, I decided to reinstall the OS. Everything went as planned until I installed the win64_153619 graphics driver from the Intel website.

Although the driver installed OK, the control panel interface is now different (now called Intel HD Graphics Control Panel)

There's no longer brightness control. The power options in W7 only has 10 steps for brightness of which are either too bright or too dark. My question is, how can I have more control over brightness? Third party software?

Hello! Well, after formatting my laptop I'm facing some annoying issues. 1) When I change the screen brightness using Fn + Up or Down, the brightness level indicator that shows up doesn't change although the brightness itself does. It's always stuck with two bars no matter if the brightness is on 100% or 0%. And yesterday my Windows installed the Energy Cut software (which I can't find to download myself) but the problem was still there. But the volume indicator changes. 2) I don't know if this is a issue but is kind of annoying. In browsers, we can open a link in a new tab holding Ctrl and clicking on it (the link). But if I click in the link and right after press Ctrl (for example, to change the current tab), it opens the previously clicked link in a new tab. It looks like there is a lag and the computer thinks I'm still clicking on the link (?). As I said, these are some very annoying issues and I'd appreciate any help anyone could give! Sorry for the bad english... Thanks a lot!

Hi luizlee86 and welcome to the community,

Here's your driver page.  Hot Keys are incorporated in the Energy Management program.  Make sure you uninstall any previous versions from Control Panel, Programs and Features first.

I'm not sure what Energy Cut software is.

Try your browser keys again after you install Energy Management.  See if they work.

I bought this PC recently and have been very pleased with it. Adapting to Windows 8 was quick and effortless for me, and I have very few qualms about it.

However, I shut down last night and when I booted up this morning, my display is different than it was before. In fact, it's quite confusion. Some areas are darker than they should be, and other areas are washed out or too light. This points it to being that somehow my contrast has changed - but how? I can find no contrast controls anywhere. There are no buttons my PC for these settings - as this is an all-in-one PC. The brightness slider changes nothing.

Some things look "normal" while other things are just too saturated, too washed out, or too contrasted.

Is there a way to set it back to default? A way to change my contrast? I'm an artist and this change in screen depth is unsettling for me - as in all calibration tests, I can see the difference between shades of black, but white is simply... white. There are no shades of white on this screen, now.

Edit: It's especially anything yellow. There is very little shading between colors of yellow right now. On my color slider, everywhere there's a hint of yellow is just... yellow, with no gradual changes into the next color(s).

Edit again: I improved it only a little by turning the gamma down slightly and playing with color sliders, but it's still far from what it should be. I have no idea what changed my settings or how to get it back exactly as it was.

Hello all,I've got 2 separate but really annoying issues with my W540 20BH: - display brightness keys not working:when waking up from Hibernation mode, sometimer (really, randomly!) the display brightness keys (Fn+F5/F6) don't work.... either if the display brightness is stuck on max, min or an intermediate level...Do anyone experience this issue? How to solve it? Is there a way to shut down and restart the process which commands the Fn keys? - audio channel commutation gets stuckNormal behaviour of the audio configuration is:1) speaker volume disabled, mic disabled2) when plugging in a 4-pin headset, headset's volume is on, headset's mic is switched on; speaker volume is still disables.3) when unplugging the headset, speakers' volume is still 0 After each boot, the audio channel is at 0, but doesn't commute to the headset when plugged in!I have to open Configuration Panel, realtek properties. With this window open, unplug and re-plug the headset. Now, the volume has its normal behaviour. Do anyone experience this? Have you got a turnaround, or a better way to configure audio channels and evenments, which is able to bypass realtek's manager? Thanks in advanced to everyone!

Hi Peon_MI,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per your query we understood that you are facing the issue with Brightness and Audio on ThinkPad W540.

To resolve the Brightness issue, you have to install all the supporting drivers for that, like Graphic driver, Power manager if it Windows 7 OS and Hotkey feature integrated application.

And for Audio related issues uninstall the current driver from control panel ? program & feature option, and update it with latest driver.

Below is the link to enter the downloads page and download latest application accordingly, please click on "Select Product" then in "QUICK PATH" enter the MTM no. select the exact model.

I have an SL400 running Windows 7.  Lenovo System Update is telling me that I need to update my video driver from version 7.15.11.7930 to 8.15.11.8678.  The problem is when I perform this update (I have since rolled back) my screen is very dim and no matter how high I turn the brightness it is a shadow of its former self. Has anyone run into this issue?  Is there something I need to change in the BIOS maybe?  No software options (either through Lenovo Power Manager or Windows) can make my screen vibrant again. Thanks.

Hi there! Just registered to get some info about those issues i have with my x201 thinkpad.  MAJOR ISSUES: *)Sometimes the display lowers its brightness level to ~50% (you can see the "steps" just like when you press fn+end), just to become immidiatly after that EXTREMLY bright, you barely can't read written text anymore. After this state, it slowly recovers back to normal (usually full brightness, level 15 i think). Takes about a minute to fully recover.I am not able to reproduce this issue, though it seems that it happens frequently when watching flash videos in fullscreen mode, but it isn't limitet to that at all, if anything. It happens every now and then "when the notebook feels like it".I would call it a major issue, because it really annoys me every time(hey cool, my new notebook's display gonna crash any minute!). *)Pressing fn+f8 seemingly doesnt work at all. In the official lenovo x201 manual this button sequence, like it is imprinted on my keyboard, isn't even descriped. i guess, this combination should stop the fan. I am really eager to get info on that! *)This step goes along with the former one and rather is a question: is it possible to prevent the fan from even starting? when i programm or write papers, i don't need any cpu usage or anything, though still the fan keeps running.  MINOR ISSUES:  *WLAN LED went off and so did my WLAN card. It just went off and needed a restart. Only happened once.*Notebook went in... Read more

Answer:x201: display randomly changes brightness + some other minor issues

the fn+f8 button isnt a picture of a fan its a picture of the trackpoint/touchpad its meant for other model thinkpads which contain both such as the x300/301, the x201 contains only trackpoint so fn+f8 has no function. The display going bright may be a bug or it might just be a setting in your power settings maybe turning off timers would help. As for the suspend thing thats easily to figure out, if its exactly like what i did you either left computer on and it went into into suspend with lid open or u picked suspend from start menu, and it wont respond to the keys. I guess suspend expects the lid to be closed or something which is a problem with the drivers, but the solution to this is that when this happens close the lid and open it again and itll come back. You can test this by going to shut down and selecting sleep and try it out. you do need the fan running, if you can hear it you may want to change some power settings and tweak the computer a bit, disable some services and kill some processes. With my x200 i can get close to 6-7 watts idle 7-8 on word 7-10 on browser. Anything preventing cpu from going into lower power state will cause it to heat up. You may also need to edit power saving profile in power manager. Best thing is to kill as many processes as you can and at about 3k rpm the fan is dead silent so if you can hear it its running over 4k rpms.

If you have graphics driver installed you can try to figure out it from your keyboard. (It may - hold "Fn" key and press repeatedly "F4" or "F5" or Up/Down Arrow key). You will find the key in your keyboard with brightness sign. Or give the model no your Laptop.

Hello all --  I recently purchased a Y910 and seem to have a few hardware issues. Out-of-the-box, things worked great, after taking a Windows 10 update, a few things seemed to have changed... I can no longer changed my display brightness. Nor does it auto dim depending on the lighting. I read up on how to fix this, and someone suggested switching to the generic Windows driver. That does solve the issue, however high-resolution and secondary monitors don't work so well.... Also, it would seem my battery is not last terribly long, like an hour and a half tops. Not surprising, if it's doing silly things like running the display at 100%, and potentually other power hungry things, then it's going to drain the battery quickly. Any suggestions? Is there a way to tell if it's on the list for the next Windows update?

System: w530 with discrete nvidia set in biosOS: Windows 10 clean installProblem: Whenever the power cord is unplugged, the display dims and/or color characteristics change, which is most visible on white backgrounds such as switching between browser tabs. There were similar problems in windows 7 too, but the lenovo power manager had some settings which used to work for me. There is no (lenovo) power manager for windows 10. I have disabled all adaptive/auto/battery saving features in power management, and yet this happens. My settings for battery are same as they are for A/C. I'm using the maximum performance profile. Most results point to Intel's power saving settings. However, I am using an nvidia card only, and they don't apply.

I updated to Windows 10 when it first was released and I had this issue where I couldn't adjust the brightness. I had this issue before when I updated my computer to windows 8.1, and all I had to do was redownload the driver. I tried doing that, but it didn't work. A friend of mine rolled the driver back to microsoft basic, and I could adjust the brightness, but the programs I was using would crash becuase of this. I thought installing a new driver would fix it, but that didn't do anything to it. I have the most updated driver, but it still won't work. At this point, I really want to put my computer back at Windows 8.1. Does anyone have any idea how to either fix the brightness thing, or uninstall windows 10?

Hi all. I got a Lenovo Ideapad laptop in November or December when my old laptop broke down. It's been working pretty well, but two days ago the brightness control stopped working. You can't use the touchscreen to do it either--the bar slides, but the brightness remains the same. (Fortunately it's an ideal one notch from the top.) Still, I need to fix this. I tried shutting down and restarting a few times, since sometimes you do need to do that to fix things (if videos won't play or the speakers don't work, for instance.) Didn't work. I tried downloading the drivers that came up recommended when I began typing my problem into this site--that didn't do it either. There are other "strangeities" I've noticed that are not nearly as problematic, but that I thought miiight be somehow related...I don't know. When you start the thing up, often there's a little "Plugin Communications has stopped working" box. You click "end program" or whatever, and that's that. No other effects. Every time you open Chrome, it says that Chrome did not shut down properly and offers to restore the previous session. Well, that's kinda nice of it, but the thing is that it DOES shut down properly all the time, so I have no clue why it would say that. Also, since this thing runs Windows 8 (which I do not like, and no one I know likes it...but what am I gonna do?), you have to actually click into your desktop when it turns on. No biggie. However, all of those "app button" thingamajigs that are on that i... Read more

Hello everyone, I got my X1 Yoga 2nd gen a couple weeks ago and noticed some issues with the display: 1, When I scroll up and down in Chrome and OneNote, there is sometimes a line quite noticeable on the screen very similar to what you would see in a screen tear of a video game, except the line isn't straight. Before reinstalling Windows I was having problems with the brightness of my screen - basically it was very dark - which I was correcting by going to [Settings],[Control panel],[Display], [Setting], [Advanced], [Color] and changing the settings there.

Now I've reinstalled Windows I've lost the [Color] tab on the [Advanced] window and I'm unable to brighten my display.

scottmski, welcome to the forum, what you are seeing is a power saving issue when running on battery. If you enter BIOS by pressing F1 at boot and navigate to Config > Display and choose Brightness you can change the setting from Normal to High and you will have the same brightness using battery or AC. This will of course reduce your battery performance. Hope this helps

There is a control key where the function key is on the image they show, and that doesn't work with the home and end keys. (Alt doesn't work either.) The P51 screen is brighter and also has almost no grain. That said, I would still like the P51 4K screen to be brighter than it is, but then I am a succer for bright screens also and is used to the XPS15 4K and MacBookPro 15 screens which are both the best in the business (Surface seems to be good to but have never used one). Its not like it is a problem to use the screen even in a quite bright room, but it is a bit "dull" compared to the ones mentioned above.

Hey all,I was playing around on the T61 on my campus book store today as I am interested in purchasing one. The bookstore has the 14inch widescreen model with the WXGA+ screen. Is it just me or is this display horribly dark? This notebook was next to a macbook, and when comparing the two it almost seems as if the thinkpad's backlight is broken or something. Do all you T61 owners out there find that the screen is really badly lit?I cant see anyone using a laptop like this... I feel lucky that I didnt purhcase the laptop without seeing one in real life - how can Lenovo sell such a laptop? (Just so youll know, I did try to increase the brightness using the function key and the brightness-up key, but it was at the max)Just incase there was something wrong with the notebook on display, do any of you out there find that it is really dim?ThanksUshir

Answer:T61 screen brightness

Most likely the brightness was turned down..... when plugged in, my T61 is actually too bright and is dimmed a bit... but if set to lowest, it can be quite dim - dim enough that it makes it difficult to do work. I doubt anything was physically wrong with that floor model.

Question: Screen Brightness

I have recently been having a problem with screen brightness.  I have a HP Pavilion zv6000 laptop.  When I plug the laptop in, the screen dims and when it is running on the battery, it is much brighter.  I may be crazy, but I swear that it used to be the exact opposite and when plugged in it was much brighter.  Thanks for your help in advance...

Answer:Screen Brightness

That is the opposite of how it should be.
