SSD Hard drive disk usage

Question: SSD Hard drive disk usage

According to Windows 7, my SSD that is 128GB has 100GB used. WinDirStat says that only 52.8GB are being used. How can I figure out what is using the additional space??

Attached are screen shots of what Windows says and what WinDirStat says.

Preferred Solution: SSD Hard drive disk usage

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Interesting, never saw an EFI partition like in your pic.

Maybe that accounts for the discrepancy?

Hey there, so I've just been looking at my old desktop PC and i was looking into the system restore settings and seen that 12% of disc space is reserved for restore points. i've changed this 10% now as the PC barely gets any use anyway, will that be ok? (Equates to about 10GB)
I also noticed that my 2nd hard drive was enabled for system restore... However, this drive only has media on it, no programs, no operating system nothing, just music files.  Now my question is, can i use this drive for system restore points even though the OS is not installed on it? The Reason I ask is because i have a lot more free space on this drive...  If not, should I just go ahead and disable monitoring on that drive?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:System restore disk space usage and using on a 2nd hard drive?

First of all yes, 10% is fine. Second, system restore keeps it's files in a hidden folder named "System Volume Information", and there is one of those folders on each drive on which System Restore is enabled. Last, the system restore points for any given drive MUST be stored on that drive.
Personally, I'd suggest disabling system restore completely and using disc imaging software instead.

As the title says; my laptop is showing me that he hard disk is using a full 100% capacity when the MB/s is 0.
My laptop runs really slowly and sometimes just restarts out of the blue or freezes.

I've already tried the following:
Booting in safe mode and running an anti-malware program. Turns out there was some Adware, so I dealt with that. But the performance didn't improve.
After that and some googling I tried the chckdsk thing. But after a whole day (I waited at least 24 hours) it was still stuck at 2%. The second time trying gave the same results.

So now I am here, hoping my hard drive is fixable. (Though I am a bit pessimistic about it).
any ideas?

Do you have full backups?
Have you been routinely using disk imaging (which we strongly recommend)?

Question: Hard Disk Usage

My HDD running at times and I don't see much usage for anything in the Task Manager. Is there a program utility that I can use to show what specific programs are using the HDD at that time? I've tried the Performance usage utility in the Control Panel, Administrative Tools and it shows the heavy usage but not which programs are involved that I can find.

I am running a dual boot 20/20 GB with Ubuntu 10.10 and XP,
and after about 5 minutes of running XP,
Process Explorer shows that avgmfapx.exe and msiexec.exe show a bit of hard disk usage,
and inevitably, the computer freezes, normally in this order:
first the taskbar freezes, then any window that is open, and at that point i am forced to
reset the computer and boot into Ubuntu.

Answer:xp has excessive hard disk usage

Something must be caused to run at StartUp that forces msiexec to cut in and try to install it. Have a look at the StartUp tab by typing msconfig into the open box at Start>Run and see if there's anything that doesn't look right.

Before I say anything, let me first express gratitude that this site exists, and that the persons on here offering help are doing so.  There is so much going on out there that creates computer messes, and it's absolutely relieving that there is somewhere to go and get answers that doesn't cost 35 dollars an hour that I can't afford.  So accept my thanks and well wishes!
The problem I am encountering is hard drive usage by something on my system that continually drives the percentage of use up to 100%.  It lags there, and so I have to constantly wait for the action to catch up, and it's beyond annoying.  So you know, I have tried a lot of things to fix this.  I have scanned repeatedly for Malware and viruses (I run Avast, Spybot, and Malwarbytes).  I have tried ending processes with task manager to see what is doing it, and it works sometimes, but then the problem comes right back.  I was running Norton antivirus, and it seemed to help somewhat to switch to Avast, but I still have the problem.  I have uninstalled any software or bloatware I don't need, with the exception of Toshiba programs that were preinstalled, only because I'm not certain I can delete them.  I have tweaked my IE by disabling any start up features I didn't think I needed and I have tried to do a Windows update, but it keeps failing by delivering the message "Windows update failed - reverting changes".  It shuts down every day or so to try the update a... Right here goes, my first post, please be gentle with me.
I have put a 120Gb Intel SSD in my laptop, done a fresh install of Windows 8 from the supplied recovery DVD's. Then upgraded to Windows 8.1 through the Windows store, installed Photoshop 7 and Kingsoft Office and a couple of very small other programs. Everything is working fine. Great. I have hardly any docs music etc on this machine (they are all on my server).
I checked my hard drive usage and discover that I have used 75.3Gb and only have 31.2Gb left. C: partition is 106Gb. I know that the recovery DVD's created restore partitions and they can be seen in disk management. No worries there, they are only a few Gb and make up the total usable disk space (120Gb or so)
So I have been looking for where the bloat is. I have enabled viewing hidden files, and added up all the folders sizes on the root of C: It comes to 44Gb. It doesn't add up to anywhere near the total that I am being told is used 75Gb.
So what is using the additional 31Gb or so? and how do I find it?
I have attached a screenshot showing properties of "all in c:/" and properties of "Local Disk C"
As you can see, they are very different.
Any help would be appreciated.

The memory on my hard drive is almost all used up and I can't account for where it has been used.

I only have 14.7 GB remaining of 141 GB. Some 126.3 GB is being used.

All of my personal documents including pictures and videos and everything else etc, etc only accounts for 24.6 GB. Norton 360 Backup only accounts for 11.1 GB in total. I have Windows Vista and not a lot of additional software, so I can't work out how the additional memory is being used. Further, my remaining memory is dwindling on an almost daily basis despite my deleting redundant files to make room.

Also I can't account for how my available RAM is being used by the computer. I have 1.0 GB of RAM and if you go into Task Manager it informs you that when idle, i.e. when not in use and no packages are open, some 52% of the RAM is in use. But if you check the processes that are open in the TM it tells you there are 56 processes running; the first 22 add up to 66 MB and the remaining 34 which are all less that 44 KB each would add up to no more than 1.5 MB.

This gives a total of 67.5 MB which is a very different figure to 520 MB!

The TM also tells you that of the available Total of 1014 MB, 616 MB is Cached, and only 16 MB Free.

For me the maths does not add up.

How is all my hard drive memory and RAM being used? Can anyone explain this for me?

I have an older computer (Athlon 2300+) running Win XP SP2 and have two hard drives installed. All of a sudden I've run into a problem where if reading/writing to the second drive, my CPU usage goes to 100% until the reading/writing is finished. I haven't changed anything hardware-wise, and it seems to have just happened out of the blue. Hard drive processes on the drive also take an extremely long time, although nothing seems to be wrong other than that.

I tried to defrag the drive (which was about 50% fragmented) , but it took about 10 minutes and only went 1%, so I stopped it.

Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong? Is the drive failing?

Answer:CPU usage at 100% when reading/writing to second hard disk

Might be a problem with the drive. It is very possible that you get a message near to the clock that reads something like "Data write delayed" or "data write failure" when trying to save something on the drive.
2 options:
Either the drive is failing to write on the disk
The drive controller might be having a problem.

If the disk is an IDE one, then most likely is the drive.
If the disk is an SATA one, it might be the controller, wether it is included on the mother board or using a separate one.

Another thing is if you are overclocking your system, the SATA hardware does not works fine from time to time with different system speeds other than the defaults.

Try using a different port to connect the drive (IDE or SATA, most modern mother boards have several SATA ports), different cable (to avoid any broken cable problem) and, if able, re-install the drive controller (IDE or SATA).

Hope it helps !

Hi, I have a problem with my temporary internet folder because it has a 4 gig file in it.  I have erased everything in this folder and checked the show hidden file in the options menu but the folder still holds huge amount of data that is nowhere to be seen. I suspect that other folders in my pc have the same problem. I have updated my avg antivirus and i also have a spybot and zone alarm program running.  I had the same problem before and the only remedy I can think of is to reformat my hard disk but I don't want to go through the same process again this time. Hope you guys can help. Its eating up a huge space in my disk that I only have 200mb of free space.

Answer:Unseen Hard disk space usage

Does the folder show to be empty?  If so and nothing is seen how do you know it's there?  Temporary internet file can be emptied by clicking tools, then deleting cookies and then files including offline content.  If you have done this did you click settings, then show files?  If so what did you see? If nothing click objects and look there, you will have option of deleting those objects but be very carefull what you delete or you will need to reinstall.

Hi all,
I am attempting to install Win7 in an Inspiron 1545 with a new SATA hard drive that was purchased. When i insert the drive, I get "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found." I have verified the drive is not showing in the BIOS, I've already attempted to reseat the drive several times. In addition, I've attempted to load the chipset drivers, SATA drivers, etc from Dells website, the drive still does not show in the OS install when booting to DVD or in bios.
I dont believe it to be an issue with the new drive, as I plugged the new drive into another model Dell laptop and it recognizes the drive fine in BIOS, also I can still boot to the previous hard drive in this laptop without issue when i plug it back in.
Is there a specific driver, etc that I need to use for the drive to be recognized or other thoughts people have?

Answer:Inspiron 1545- replacing hard drive, new SATA drive not found "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found

This is strange - either the new hard drive has a rare compatibility issue with your onboard controller (I use a 500Gbyte in my 1545 without probs)) or it is a mechanical problem.I would take a close look at the physical dimensions and compare your original hdd with the new one.Watch the video (even though it's about a 1525 (similar to an 1545) and an SSD hdd) -  go to 2:20

I am trying to troubleshoot an issue which has been bugging me for quite a while. Basically, I leave my computer on overnight and don't close it to download stuff and updates and also because I don't like the time to boot up.

Well anyways after coming back to my computer at the morning, my computer becomes almost like a brick. The hard drive activity is pretty much always red, everything lags a lot, mouse event, or any input. CPU is not having much of a usage, but RAM is almost full. I attached a screenshot if it helps.

I also noticed one of my hard drives, the one which is slower and I only use it for backup and no programs or games, is almost 100% all the time, while the other one which has windows installation and program files is not that intense in activity. Also notice the read and write speed is not that big, but response time is huge.

Any idea the cause of it? It only happens if I come back to my computer for a long time not attending it.

I disable system restore, Windows defender real time protection and sleep.

Hi SevenForums, this seems like a great forum and I hope one of you can figure out my problem. I have x2 1.5TB WD CaviarBlack HHD. I have my primary drive partitioned to about 900GB for C:\ with 500GB unallocated. The second drive is for backup and is formatted as Dynamic with all space except a static 500GB partition going to auto-backup. I believe when I setup Windows I gave 500GB to the backup partition as well, but it has since grown automatically to allow for backups. It is now full and it shouldn't be.

Anyway, the reason it's full is because of some oddly unaccounted for space on my primary C:\. When I look at WinDirStat, the C:\ is supposedly only using 245GB. However, when looking at drive properties or in Disk Management, it shows that 595GB are being used! I can't figure out where the extra 250GB is going. So weird and I know it's not a backup since the backups automatically go to the other hard drive.

Here is a picture of WinDirStat (C:\ only) along with C:\ properties.

Hello everyone,
I'm coming here today because I've stumbled upon two trojans that popped up into my Windows Defender right as booted my computer! This is a little new, but at the same time it kinda isn't. I've been dealing for a couple months with an unnamed process at startup that would up my CPU usage to about 80% when I checked Task Manager, and for a while all I did was end the process and everything would go back to normal.
A little later, two instances of PowerShell would begin booting right at startup, and that's when I knew even further that something wasn't right! Nothing really happened until Defender quarantined a first Trojan (The SvcMiner), and then my disk usage went up to 100% until (I mean, this is just a guess) another one (The Detplock) was quarantined. My Disk usage has gone back to normal since, but I naturally still want to get rid of them.  For now they're both quarantined since I'm reluctant on just removing them without asking help on here.
I assume they came from cracked software I have on my external drive, so I'll delete them all, but I know the viruses themselves are on my C:, so will I have anything to do with my external beyond deleting said software? Here are my logs (This is the C drive only though, if I need to scan :

Answer:How to copy data from hard disk to pen drive using Bart PE bootable disk?

When it comes to actually using the BartPE disc, you?ll need to first enter your BIOS and set the CDROM drive as your primary boot device, this is the default setting in most computers.Once BartPE is loading, when prompted for network support, click ?no? if you do not need it like in this case to save yourself some time.Click on Go , Programs, A43 File Management UtilityThis will open a similar program to windows explorer so you can copy your data before formatting. Locate the hard disk where your windows installation is on, select the folders you want to backup and copy them to the other partition or hard disk.If you have an external USB hard disk and want to copy your data on it, make sure you connect it to the computer before you boot with the BartPE disk.

I had recently built a custom PC with the following specs:

CPU - i7 6700k @ 4.5GHz
GPU - Palit GTX 1080 Jetstream 8gb @ 2100MHz
Motherboard - Asrock Z170 Extreme4
Ram - 16gb Viper Elite DDR4 3000mhz (8x2)
SSD - HyperX Savage 120gb
HDD - Seagate Baracuda 1tb
PSU - Corsair CX 500w

The PC is amazing, it performed beautifully in everything I threw at it, the only weak point was Windows 10.. I started to get random OS hangs without cause when playing games or doing general browsing, I thought I had an issue with my GPU or something but it turns out after some investigating that it was a Windows problem as when the hangs would happen I quickly would open task manager and see that my drive usage was at 50% having two drives this meant one of them was under 100% usage and so I wanted to find out what was doing it, I looked into performance monitor and other programs to try monitor usage but nothing other than the typical system process was using it.

I did the normal fixes, disable Superfech and Windows Search etc. Neither helped, I clean installed 3 times, no luck. I even safe booted (As told by Microsoft to do so) and the problem still persisted so that proved it wasn't an application causing the problem it was a Windows 10 problem. I tried upgrading to the latest anniversary edition of Windows 10 and the problem literally got 10 times worse, from what were 2-5 second PC hangs at random throughout the day turned into 10-15 second hangs every 10 minutes.

My laptop (Lenovo Y510p) is always at 100% disk usage for the first 15-20 minutes of starting up, and for intermittent periods afterwards. During this period, everything essentially freezes including the Start Menu, Task Manager, and all other apps running. After about 5 minutes, the hard drive "catches up" and everything starts working again.

The strange part is that when looking at Task Manager / Resource Monitor, the total read/write of the hard drive does not appear to be very high - ie it will be at 100% disk usage but the highest program is reading/writing maybe 0.1MB/s.

This is causing the laptop to become borderline unusable. I have to leave the laptop running in order for it to be usable, as shutting it down / putting it to sleep will cause the hard drive to go back to 100%, and everything comes to a standstill. Please help!

I've attached some pictures which should illustrate what's going on hopefully.

I noticed that my hdd light is constantly stays on (like as power light stays on) and my recourse monitor disk usage is 10mb/sec its not usually like this. I formatted my laptop installed my drivers and my basic software like foxit reader, avira antivirus, MS office etc. But this occurred again same day right after I formated my laptop. That driving me crazy. Can you suggest anything why this happening?

Answer:Hard drive over usage

To make sure your HDD is OK, run a chkdsk /r in an elevated command prompt.

Question: hard drive usage

Hi several days ago I checked my hard drive capacity showing 54.6 GB Free of 80 GB capacity
Next day when I checked again it was showing 11.7GB Having not installed or downloading anything?!!
My computer is a Dell OptiPlex GX620 Running Windows7.
Would appreciate any comments------Could it be a faulty indication or a hard disc virus?

Answer:hard drive usage

Two things you can easily do:a. Use a tool like WinDirStat - see what files are taking up space, how much, and where.b. Run the chkdsk /r cmmand, which will check the file system and accurately summarize your partition free space.Louis

Hey Guys,

Looking for your advice and any links if any...cheers in advance

My Situation

In December 2009 I purchased a Toshiba Qosmio X500 - Model No. PQX33A-00X00J

At the time I upgraded my purchase from Toshiba Reseller BD4U, going from the standard 1x 500GB Sata drive + 1x 64GB SSD... to instead having 2x 500GB sata drives. I purchased with 3 year onsite next business day warranty, that is is now expired.

It came loaded with MS Win 7 Premium Home Edition - but no disks provided.
My Needs
I need/want to factory reset my PC - its starting to run slowI need to re-partition from my existing 4x partitions to just having 2
The Issues
Possibly as a result of upgrading the disk drives at time of purchase, I don't believe I have a hidden Recovery partition in order to do a System Recovery from the Hard Disk Drive - see image of my current partitions attached I don't have Win 7 OS installation disks or Toshiba Driver disks as they should have been installed by Toshiba
My Questions
Do You agree that I DONT have a Recovery Partition - when looking at the partition image? I'm confused on this point coz people say its hidden!?Given I have no Toshiba Drivers Disk or Windows 7 OS disks - what should I do? I'm thinking of downloading Win 7 (use my product key from sticker under PC) and making a disk/USB (but need to learn how)Is this where I get ALL necessary Toshiba drivers for my PC from?Does Toshiba provide a link on its site and instructions on where to get Win 7 ... My Hp pavillion pc started crashing a lot recently and recovery didn't work so I told was advised to get a new hard disk which I did but now I keep getting the above error. I've been into the bios and all seems to be booting from the correct drive
The first time I tried the hp recovery disk it started to work but when it came to reinstalling the software it stayed on 0% for long so I switched off. Maybe that was a mistake. I've run a diagnostics test all passed the test but at the end it said testing: Boot path, error code BIOHD-3.

I tried putting the old drive back in and it was the same as before. But I was still able to go online, albeit until it crashed again.
HP want more money to help even though I brought the recovery discs they suggested.

I really hope someone can help, I've been told there needs be A partition before the software can be installed.

Sorry if the wording is a bit messed up, I am writting this from a mobile.

Thanks in advance,

Answer:Non-system disk or disk error with new hard drive

Have you tried to run the recovery disks again? They should automatically put a partition on the hard drive.

If it still doesn't work then there's usually one of two different possibilities:
- bad recovery disks
- other bad hardware in the system

I'd suggest running these free bootable diagnostics first: Initial Hardware Diagnostics
Then, if those tests pass, contact HP to return the defective recovery disks and get a new set.

I was advised by a computer tech to buy a new hard drive because of issues I had with my HP pavillion s3330.
After installing I got a non-system disk error message.
After going into the BIOS to make sure it was booting my HP recovery cd from the the right drive, I ran a diagnostics test and after finding no problems an error message came up at the bottom saying - Testing: BOOT PATH, Error code: BIOHD-3.

I consulted HP who said I need to create a partition for the software to be installed to.
If that is the problem then can anybody assist me with this as I have no clue.

By the way, I'm using Vista home premium.

Hi all,
it's my first posting here thus I hope I'm doing everything fine.

I'm having this weird problem: after a PC crash I had found out that my Windows XP laptop (Compac nc6120) didn't see anymore any CD/DVD drive or any virtual CD/DVD drive. The device manager stated that the driver had been started correctly but there was no corresponding HW available (Error 41) which in the case of virtual drives is quite funny

I had already seen this problem on other PCs and solved it by removing Upper and Lower filter entries in the CurrentControlSet\Control\Class entry for CD-ROM and rebooted.

After reboot all disks were available as expected and I had to reinstall some of the CD-Writing software to re-install the needed upper and lower filters.

Now everithing seems to work fine with one notable exception: If I show devices in Groups Explorer insists in placing my CD/DVD both phyiscal and virtual in the "Hard Disk Drives" group.
This is not a problem in itself, except for some annoyances:
- When I insert a CD or DVD ROM Explorer says the HD is full and nags about clenaning it up
- Autostart does not seem to work as expected all the times

I've noticed that when I create a new virtual DVD or install an external CD-ROM, it is correctly seen as a "Removable" Device but I don't have any "Properties" option in the contextual menu.
If I refresh the explorer window (F5) then the same driver is seen as an HD, the "Properties" opti... Read more

Answer:Removable Disk seen as Hard Disk Drive by Explorer

Hi Paolo. Welcome to TSF.
It's possible some files got corrupted when your machine crashed. Try reinstating them by running sfc /scannow. Provided your XP installation disc has SP2 installed put it in your drive. If autorun isn't working you may have to start it manually. When it starts, press EXIT at the welcome screen. Then press Start>Run and type sfc /scannow in the box and press OK. You may have to press retry several times - this is normal. When finished, reboot your machine and see if this has improved things.

My computer keeps refusing to start up. I have to re-install windows each time. Hard disk keeps making a "funny" noise. I have an 80gb hard drive and have used 40gb so far. I want to back up everything incase my hard drive fails. Could I backup to an external disk drive? would I need to install windows on the external drive. or is there a better way to save all my files, downloads, and software? When I bought the PC it came with software already installed and a recovery disk. But obviously I dont want restore to factory settings as I will loose everything. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I am looking for a way to get real time data on what is accessing my hard drive. I know about the indexing problems out there with windows but it hate that the only real way to tell if your hard drive is being accessed is to look at the light on the front of case (I think).

Anyone of a monitoring tool for this purpose?

Could try Process Monitor monitors read write access on a HD and what location. Use Show File System Activity from top menu and un-highlight the other options, its the four icons top menu towards the right.

This is a new one for me, migrating data from an XP system to a new Windows 7 Home Premium system.  On small drive previous system I always dump the entire contents into a folder for customers in case down the road they remember some strange location where they had some data stored.
Windows 7 shows 11.9 GB free of 38.2 GB (approx 26 GB used) connected with an IDE to USB cable, but when I dragged the entire drive to a folder it was only showing about 4 GB worth of files.  Discovered the user had made files private trying to implement a "secure XP system". I took ownership at the drive level for all subfolders and objects and still am only seeing 16 GB of files . . . somewhere are 10 GB of missing data.
The XP system is not bootable so I can't do a comparison on the actual running system either.
User is a bare bones knowledge user and I don't see any evidence of a TrueCrypt installation.
Comments? Questions? Any thoughts appreciated.

Answer:Hard drive usage discrepancy

Another oddity, if I CTRL A and right click at the root of the XP drive I see 50,148 files and 5,320 folders, but if I drag everything that is selected to a folder on the Windows 7 drive the dialog box reads copying 3,889 items (1.64 GB) . . .

I have a Toshiba Tecra TE2100 1.8 GHZ P4 laptop with 768 MB RAM. I purchased an external enclosure for a Maxtor 60 Gig IDE hard drive. After starting Windows XP everything is running normal. As soon as I turn on the hard drive my CPU usage skyrockets to 100% and everything runs incredibly slow if at all and the computer won't shut down. When I turn off the drive things return to normal after about 15 minutes. Sometimes Windows comes up and says the drive is installed and everything runs except for the fact that there is no drive letter, but I believe I found a workaround for this in these forums. If I could just solve this CPU problem I believe everything will be ok. Could these problems be related? I have spent hours trying to figure this one out.
Thanks For Your Help,

Answer:USB Hard Drive = CPU 100% usage - Explorer

You should try to fond out what is using 100% CPU. It could be your antivirus program or Windows itself or the USB storage drivers. Could be a damaged filesystem on the drive too. Or maybe the drive is bad..

I have a 120GB hard drive; when purchased it was already partitioned, 60/50/10. The 50 partition is called "D" drive, which is completely empty, according to explorer, but when viewed through properties, it only displays 40GB as available and 10 is in use. Does anyone have an explanation, why?Cheers!

Answer:Phantom usage of my hard drive.

Make sure that your windows explorer is set to display hidden and system files and look again. If this does not help then drop down to DOS and type "DIR D:/S" without the quotation marks and see if anything shows up.As a last resort (and you are very sure that there are no files your computer needs on drive D) you could always format it and see if that solves your problem.

I am request info on a better way to back up external hard drives. we would like an automatic back up that would back up new files on a daily basis.

It seems that no matter how many external HD we get they fill up rather quickly.< 3 to 6 months>.

Is there a way to set up software to automatically update new files daily?

Hi All,

I have a customer with W10 that is next to unusable.

Is there something out there in the Windows 10 world right now that would cause 100% hard drive usage, slowing a computer down to a crawl?

I found three anti viruses duking it out and fix that.  But CPU goes to 100% (system) and drags the computer to a crawl. Pulling the power plug resets it for a while.

I have not found any root kits or the like.

I am wondering if this is one of M$'s endless full rebuild updates?

Any words of wisdom?

Hey guys!
Please don't bash me for posting this (as I can see others have posted about it also). I just want to make sure I can get as many ideas as possible, before I do a clean install/new hdd.
I am helping a family friend fix their desktop. It is only about 3 years old and has a AMD quad core processor, 8GB Ram, 1TB HDD(500GB used) - They also have a smaller 2nd HDD - Though I am not sure what the contents are for. They told me the computer has been running very slow since October.
So I did my usual computer cleanup steps:
1. Malware removal (Spybot, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Hitman Pro, Emisoft Emergency kit) - All in safe mode - nothing serious found.
2. Ran CCleaner (Cleaner,Registry,Startup) / Deleted temp files
3. Checked for unwanted programs - found none
4. Google Chrome is their browser - no plugins/extensions to remove
5. They have AVG Internet Security, scans only at 9pm everyday
At this point, I still felt the computer to be very sluggish - After looking at task manager, I noticed that the disk was always at, or close to, %100 usage. **No 1 process was hogging it all**
**Decided to let Defraggler to Defrag the PC - And that is where I am at now** (Gives me time to research/jot down things to try - will be doing further work remotely on the PC(Teamviewer))
**Things to still try**
1. Disable Windows "Superfetch" --services
2. Disable "Windows Search" --services ... Read more

I have a Dell AMD 3800 2gh 2g RAM 240g HD and something is filling my hard drive to capacity and I cannot find out what. I recently installed Carbonite and it appears to be running fine. We noticed that some recorded TV shows suddenly disappeared and when looking found the hard drive within 3g of being full. I started backing up and deleting video and picture files and I will notice that space being freed up on HD but then it fills back up again without us saving anything. This morning after deleting files I had 9.4g free but right now it only shows 5.97 free. I did empty recycle bin. I tried to run CHKDSK but could not as it said I needed higher security. I am the Admin on Vista Home Premium so should be able. Can someone help me through the steps to check what is happening. Thank you in advance.

Hey there guys, about six months ago I started receiving an error every few days on my computer on boot, and it was something along the lines of: 'pxe-rom: Check cable connection!'. To fix it I just used my Windows 7 install CD and it was fine, until whenever it'd happen again. Now, just about three days ago an error popped up that said 'Windows has detected a hard disk problem'. The hard drive is a 640 GB Toshiba MK6465GSXN. Anyway, after getting that message I quickly backed up all of my important documents and stuff onto an external HDD. It was also very slow, slower than my computer had ever been. So, I decided to do a clean install since scans with Malwarebytes and AVG detected nothing. And then, once it finished, it popped up the error message again?! I have noticed that the slowness has gone, but I'm not installing any programs in case it does fail. I am wondering that maybe the 'check cable connection' error was telling me something, but I didn't think anything of it. So, does it sound like I need to get a new hard drive?
EDIT: I bought a new hard drive, fixed!

Answer:Windows has detected a hard disk problem. Hard drive failing?

In many cases, that is Windows way of saying your hard drive is in imminent danger of failing. Of course there could be other problems, but windows will usually detect it first. A tutorial that may help is simple to use, but may take a while. Disk Check I would also get the Manufacturer's hard drive diagnostic program to check the drive. You were wise to back up all of your personal information.

Answer:Primary Master hard Disk Error - No hard drive detected

First pull ac power and then press power on button a few times. Then replace ac plug and see if it boots correctly. If not then use bios to see if there is a hard drive. Some have a sort of autodetect selection. If still fails then get the hard drive diagnostic for that brand. Almost every hard drive company offers great software that can run usually from a cd or dvd drive. You boot to the cd.Then maybe I'd go in the computer (after you remove ac and press power button a few times and use esd strap) to re-seat hard drive cables. Look for any wear or damage on the cables. Test the power supply maybe too. A Pit Bull is like a gun you can pet. And there is no safety on it.

I have emailed Paragon and am awaiting there reply, but you guys seem to know a lot more and try and solve the problem

Up to this point I have used either Acronis or Paragon for my backups, I prefer Paragon over Acronis, mainly because the restore by Paragon is far quicker.

I have both bootable CD's, but in this instance I would like to concentrate on Paragon.

I downloaded Paragon's Advanced Recovery CD. 2009 Build 6730. Put it in my rom and booted ....... looked at a black screen for 10 minutes. Removed it and rebooted, it got stuck at the loading of Vista, then I got another black screen no hard drive movement.

Rebooted again, this time with the regular Paragon bootable CD. It booted into the recovery console.

Now this is where things go from bad to worse. I tried finding my OS, after a lengthy period I received an error disk 2 i/o fault!!! ....... no operating system found.

Now disk 2 is my external hard drive where my backups are kept.

So I rebooted with the CD in, went into the recovery console and clicked on "safe restore", after playing the waiting game I get a message disk 2 i/o fault!!!.

Took out the Paragon CD, put in the Vista one, tried a repair, but there was no OS to repair .

So I installed Vista, and because I didn't want to have to reinstall all of my programs again (yer lazy I know, but that's what backup's are for).

Checked with the fresh install, that my two external hard drives, had there drivers and were present. They were ... Read more

Hi all,

My vista box is getting a little slow from time. Like everything freezes on the computer, and then I have to wait a little bit and it comes back. Often this happens when firefox has been used for a while. I'm not sure if this is firefox's entire fault, so I was wondering what free program is out there that I can use to monitor what application is accessing the disk. I tried googling but just found a bunch of hard drive monitoring (temperature, fail rate, etc.) programs.

You should be able to use the resource monitor built into Windows to see what programs are writing to disk.

Third party utilities are available as well, such as ProcessMonitor and FileMonitor.

Here's what I am working on.

Dell: P-233 Latitude Laptop

Here's what I have done:

I got this computer used. I formatted the hard drive first, then I went into FDISK.
I noticed that when I hit Diplay info it shows this:

Partition: C:
Status: A
Type: Pri DOS
Mbytes: 2047
Usage: 66%

What Im concerned about is why does it show 66% usage? Does this mean it is only using 66% of the Hard drive? And if so how do I set it to get 100%?
When I set the percentage to l00 I notice it will still say only 66%...

Also: What WIN operating system in your opinion would work best with this computer being only a P233? I see it says it was built for WIN95/NT....

thanks again

Answer:Dell P-233 Laptop - Hard Drive Usage says only 66% - Need Help!

Sounds like you used an old version of FDISK or you did not enable large disk support when it asked in FDISK. Windows 95 at first only support a 2 Gig partition. Later versions support bigger partitions. What Windows are you using? If 95 you will have to just create an extended partition and format it. If Windows 98 you must use the windows 98 Fdisk to delete and create a new partition and don't forget to enable large disk support.

Answer:Cpu usage 100% with external firewire hard drive

Hi, I've got a problem with an external firewire hard drive (a Lacie d2 drive). When I try to access the drive in explorer (just browsing through the files and directories) the cpu usage rockets to 100%. Shortly after that explorer freezes, and cpu usage goes back to normal when explorer is shut down. Needless to say that the external drive is pretty much useless for the time being. I reinstalled the OS and the necessary drivers but the problem persists. The computer is a recent one with Win XP as OS. The motherboard only has USB 1.1 support so I bought a firewire-USB2.0 combo card. I just can't get the Lacie drive to work on that computer. The same external hard drive does work normally on another computer (also Win XP as OS, but with a firewire expansion card). If anyone could identify what the problem is, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Our son recently bought me a new computer, a Dell XPS 8920.  Though I've read about and watched some YouTube vieos, and not being a computer guru, I'm having a difficult time understanding how to set up the OS (C) & D Drive.  I realize you cannot download a ton of programs onto the OS (C) and have to revert to the D Drive.  Especially if one uses a lot of photoshop programs like I do.  I believe I understand you can set up a Folder on the C Drive that will direct to a specific program on the D Drive but, I'll be darned if I can figure out the process?
Anyway, is there a book, something online, I can download so as to understand how this Drive system differs from the standard C Drive when it comes to downloading multiple programs?  What I have found is short on details and seems to presume one knows a lot about computers...which I do not.  I wish the new PC had come with a users manual of some kind.  So, any help will be greatly appreciated so I can finally start using this XPS properly.

Hello all,

I couldn't determine whether this is being caused by the OS or the Hardware, but here goes. I recently decided my HD was due a reformatting. I transferred files my clean (virus-scanned) files onto an external HD and back again after reinstalling Windows XP (SP2).
Reinstalled the most crucial drivers first, and whilst reinstalling various applications, I saw a small notification pop-up in the bottom right informing me that my C drive is running low on storage, then again soon after informing me it's critically low.

Bringing up the properties of my C drive displays the following:

Bringing up the properties of the contents of the C drive (including hidden and protected operating system files/folders) displays the following:
I also opened up disk defragmenter to see if that had anything to say which might help, and though it reports the same inaccurate usage for C, in the top pane, the graphical chart seen at the bottom would indicate that around 50% of C Drive space is unused:
I've never encountered anything like this before and really have no idea how to further analyse the problem; any suggestions apprechiated, thanks.

Answer:Incorrect Hard Drive Usage Being Reported.

What files?

Was it just data files or all of the files on the old supposedly clean drive like Windows, program, and data files?

I was laying in bed and heard my computer restart for seemingly no reason. I get up to look at the screen and I get the error "3rd Slave Hard Disk Error" I try to continue but since Ubuntu is installed on the now faulty hard drive, it says error: no such device: - device name - Entering rescue mode - grub rescue>... which I've seen before, it's telling me that it can't find the Ubuntu installation. I have windows as my primary OS on the first hard drive (the one that's still detected) and manually choose windows before the computer starts. I went into BIOS to try and change the boot sequence, which has caused the grub rescue screen before, but the 2nd hard drive is no longer detected. How can I get passed the grub rescue screen? What could of possibly happened to my hard drive in such a seemingly random way? I have a 3rd unused hard drive, am I better off just installing windows on it and starting over? I don't want to lose everything on my 2nd hard drive though.

I tried starting it with the cords plugged into the primary hard drive into the 2nd faulty one, it's spinning but still not detecting it

[Seriously need help] External hard disk causes hard drive failures & OS crashes
The thread is rather long. Only read what you think important. Skip the rest!

We have a serious but mysterious problem. We have spent already one week but drawing a blank.
Two hard drives have been crashed and failed (unreadable). One computer has hung a few times unexpectedly and had one weird restart (no memory dump produced).
I suspect all the recent problems have to do with the new USB external hard disk (Buffalo MiniStation Lite: HD-PE250U2).

Formatting USB external hard disk
Originally I would like to use the program given by Buffalo to format the external drive once but we failed. We simply used Windows to reformat the drive into NTFS. I did not use the TurboSpeed advertised by Buffalo, or run its free program.

Case A: Multi-transfer causes system crashes?
The first time we met the problem.
We were trying to help a friend to backup data on an old drive, about a few years old. We plugged in the Buffalo USB portable hard drive and transferred a whole lot of files to the drive. Several cop/cut-and-paste operations were active at that time. The whole system completely froze up. It doesn't respond at all. Only a hard restart could help.
Restarted. Tranferred again. Several cop/cut-and-paste operations were active.
Hard drive crashed - the beginning of the nightmare!
Windows restarted. Chkdsk was running. Saw many lines of messages with:

Hi there,

I am having a problem with explorer.exe. When I click on certain folders in My Documents, the CPU Usage rockets and it takes ages for the next page to materialise. This is most frequently happening when navigating around my External HD, which for reference is a 320GB Seagate FreeAgent Desktop USB. I have defragmented the C: an D: drives of my computer, despite the fact that the analysis reveals that I don't need to. I have run Spybot S&D, which says that I have nothing malicious to worry about on my computer. Finally, even though I have disconnected my external HD, the slowness has spread to my main hard drives.

I would very much like to know what is going on, and hope that someone might be able to help me. I have attached my HijackThis log file.

Kind regards,

So I have performed a complete wipe of the laptop, formatted it, did a clean install of Vista Business. Installed all the drivers, added all the hotfixes, Windows Updates, etc. I then stopped all non-essential startup items, so that only these startup: Services:AD Monitor [fingeprint related service]AuthenTec Fingerprint Service [fingeprint related service]Data Transfer Service [fingeprint related service]ThinkPad PM ServicesInstallDriver Table ManagerOn Screen Display Applications:TPHOTKEYTpShocks Why is it, my hard drive accessing light constantly blinks. I've left my computer on for a few hours, come back, and it still blinks once a second. Why is the hard drive being accessed so much? Is it a specific driver? I could only assume that's got to be some wear on the ball bearings, I never had this problem with my T60.

Answer:[T400] Constant Hard Drive Light Usage

Hi number65, I could only assume that's got to be some wear on the ball bearings:-) Most hard drives have now switched to fluid bearings for the disk spindle. I don't know what sort of bearing the actuator head pivot has, I assume simple sleeve bearing? In any case, the hard drive activity is unlikely to prematurely wear out your drive. Unless you're noticing user interface slowness or battery drain or bothersome noise caused by the hard drive activity, you can safely ignore it. On the other hand, if you want to track down what's causing the hard drive accesses, some of the tools from Sysinternals may help. In particular:AutorunsProcess ExplorerProcess Monitor

I have recently purchased and installed a new hard drive. It is a WD Caviar 16MB cache SATA 2 7200rmp 250 GB. (running as SATA 1 because mother board only supports SATA 1). I have noticed that it is horribly slow when the drive is being written to, also the processor usage spikes to 80-100% during the writing. I have concluded it's just during the writing because the computer boots fast and seems just fine when reading from the drive.

I have Windows XP installed, and running the latest updates. The driver for the the HD is a Windows SCSI driver. I have looked on the WD website for their driver, but have not had any success finding it. The only software that came in the retail box is the WD Data Lifeguard application, but it doesn't have an option for installing drivers.

I've read some posts about DMA and PIO settings, but I'm not sure if that only applies to IDE drives.

Thank you in advance for the help.

My laptop is running slow and the battery drains too fast, and the hard drive just starts going constantly sometimes; it's half-full (out of 320GB), I've already cleaned up, defragmented, run virus scans with various anti-virus products, and something is just dragging it down. I can't tell if the hard drive is dying or a bunch of programs are sucking up resources (like anti-virus).

I only know how to use Task Manager, and I'm not seeing how to track usage over a day or so.

Is there something I can use? What would be the best and what are some other good ones?

(Note: I've used Process Explorer but I'm not getting much more valuable information out of it)

Well you could take a look at ProcessLasso

You'd need to configure it not to restrain some processes though.

It seems no matter what i am trying to do, computer always uses hard drive. I have Internet Explorer 8.0 open with 4-5 tabs and everytime i switch tabs it takes at least 30 seconds to switch and all this time hard drive is loading. Or for example i opened tab with YouTube video fully loaded and paused it. After a while i return to it to resume playing and then this loading starts. And this does not happen with Internet Explorer only. It seems computer does not use memory or maybe 1Gb is not enough? What is strange is that when application is loaded, it responds well for some time but later as time passes it starts to load slow and computer seems to use hard drive a lot. Please take a look at my Task Manager below:What do you find strange here? Is it too many handles? Maybe Page File is too high? Here is a screenshot of processes running sorted from processes taking most memory to least:Laptop Specs:Intel Centrino Duo T2400 1.83Ghz1Gb Ram80Gb Hard DriveGeForce Go7400

Answer:Slow Performance And Frequent Hard Drive Usage

Sort the processes tab in task manager on the cpu column and see if some process is spiking. If not, try a clean boot and work backwards (Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (disable everything from loading) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming process, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.)

My computer normally sat idle with 2% of the CPU being used. For some time now, the computer sounds like the hard drive is racing, and the CPU is being used 50% of the time.

I'm attaching a screen shot.

I think I understand that if the system idle program were at a high value, that would mean exactly that, the system was idle for most of the time.

The System is showing about 50 on the CPU tab (mem usage is 36k)
The System Ide Process is showing about 50 on the CPU tab (mem usage is 28K)
At the bottom of the Windows Task Manager it states the CPU Usage is 50%, with 55 processes running.

Answer:Hard Drive Racing - CPU at 50 percent usage when no applications are running

Also cannot get my computer to shut down it just hangs, so I have to unplug it to get it to shut down. (I"ve left it on all night to see if it would shut down, and it won't)

Hello. I've got a very strange problem on my hands here. I recently upgraded my case and to go with my new case I got a SATA Sony DRU-190S DVD-writer to replace my IDE writer. After completing the transfer to my new case I noticed that my hard drive light was flickering every second. It was pretty noticable as the Antec 900 HD light is very bright.Upon investigating further I noticed that lsass.exe and csrss.exe were constantly producing many I/O reads and writes to the hard drive. After googling lsass.exe and csrss.exe I discovered that these two processes have caused other Windows users to experience the same problem, but every cause seems different e.g. A virus, CPU utilization issue, corrupt profile etc. and I couldn't find one that matched mine.I managed to find a thread that mentioned a Microsoft service called Terminal Service, which I disabled, and that seemed to tame lsass.exe. The problem is csrss.exe remains and is reading the hard drive many times an hour causing the hard drive to flicker every second.I found a thread that told me to use Disk Monitor and Process Monitor together to try and capture what exactly is accessing the hard drive. Unfortunately I couldn't get Process Monitor to work it just came up with an error 'unable to allocate memory with a block size 4000', I tried googling that error but found nothing that could fix Process Monitor. I tried using filemon and process explorer, but its not really giving me the information that... Read more

Does this mean that the only hardware change was the external case and the Sony DVD, i.e., you put the old motherboard, video, harddrive, etc, into the new case? What about power supply? Is this computer on a network?Does the computer exhibit any 'problems' - slowness, etc.Have you tried to create a new user profile per the MS article that you referenced? I'm working on an Acer Power FV that has been shutting off "randomly". Ive stress tested the CPU, and GPU, and tested the RAM in Windows. I tested those components at the same time, multiple times, and it only powered off once. I also scanned the RAM with a bootable utility without any problem. But the system has powered off every time I have scanned for viruses with various softwares. It also powered off immediately when I "logged in" using the recovery console on the CD and another time when I was scanning for bad sectors with the CD. I scanned the drive in a different computer with Symantec and was reported as clean. I'm hoping its the power supply. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Note: I will be away from the Acer until monday.

Answer:Solved: System powers off in relation to hard drive usage

A test for the power supply would be to swap in a known good power supply. If the problem is still present then it is likely not the power supply. Though I do suspect the power supply as Acer is not known for using high quality power supplies in thier systems.

I have a Samsung s2 1tb external hard drive.

Today when I hooked it up to my laptop it would not load. It will shows local F drive when it usually will say samsung Drive.

A pop up box will then appear stating "you need to format drive"

I know if I reformat it I will lose all my data which I will not do.

When I look in device manager it states that the external hard drive is installed.

I attempted to go through start menu and type cmd then F: and it states "The volume does not recognize this system file. Please make sure all required system drivers are loaded and the volume is not corrupted."

Answer:Samsung s2 external hard drive not loading showing local disk F drive

With the external drive connected, Go to Disk Management (Start > type: "computer" > click on Computer Management > click on Disk Management)

Determine which disk is the external drive.
If the external drive shows here as a healthy volume, Right click on the large box to the right of the "Disk 1" / "Disk 2" lable and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

If there is nothing but a grey box or "Unallocated Space" next to the disk number then Right click on the disk number (the box) and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

Change the drive letter to anything else > OK.

If you can't do any of the above post back. If you can post a screen shot of the Disk Management window that can help.
Do not initialize the disk or format it or you will lose your data.

Also, video card for memory has error code of 2000-0332
validation 71027

Much appreciation for info to help me do this, confused and sad.

Answer:Inspiron 14z-4423 Hard Disk Drive not found: How to Reseat Drive?

The 0142 error is a HDD failure. This is a smart error and indicates that the HDD is failing or already failed error - see this article for reference -
So, reseating the HDD will not positively help in this case. If you would like to reseat the HDD anyway and check - download the service manual here -
Also, the 0332 is a video card related error. So, the motherboard needs to be replaced.
Personally, I would suggest you to invest your money on a new machine than to repair this system. However, that is your discretion.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your Name for case records.

Hi , Is the hard drive you have fitted brand new, nothing on it? Or does it have an OS on it from previous PC? In the BIOS does the new drive show in the list ? And are you using a genuine MS Windows disc, or the HP recovery disc, (as supplied with a new PC?).

Hello thank you for your time, I am experiencing issues with a dell dimension 4100. I have received a virus and was told upon startup to insert some kind of startup disk im not sure it was a while ago so me in all my stupidity tried to connect the hard drive to a different motherboard in the spot the dvd drive plugs in to in that cisnet computer. Well after a few tries i somehow got it to recognize the hard drive upon startup and it tried to format it i think, although as soon as i saw that screen i powered down and now the hard drive is no longer recognized by either computer, even in the bios it says the total memory is 512 mb with it connected to hard drive spot of the original dell. I would really like to get my dell working again but it gives me the error Invalid Boot diskette Insert Boot diskette in A: I do not care for restoring the files on the hard drive they are worthless to me i just want to get my computer working again any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you.

Answer:Non detected Disk Drive/Hard Drive Need help with dell Dimension 4100

Place OEM Windows CD into the CD or DVD drive and boot off of this disk. If your system doesnt want to boot off the CD or DVD drive go into bios and set the CD or DVD drive as 1rst boot device in boot order. Once you successfully boot off of your optical drive you then can delete the partition on the hard drive, create new partition and reformat, then install clean installation to that hard drive. If you dont have recovery or oem cd available, you will have to buy one.

Any idea why my SSD is listed as a 'Hard disk drive' instead of 'Solid state drive' as in your screenshots above? I am running W8 Pro x64 RTM from Technet. In Device Manager my SSD shows as a 'Samsung SSD 830 Series SCSI Disk Device'. I wonder if it's being on a Marvell controller might be the reason. My mobo has both Marvell and Intel disk controllers.

Answer:SSD listed as 'Hard disk drive' instead of 'Solid state drive'??

The ssd should always be used in an Intel port imho bud. The driver you are using is making it appear to be a scsi device.
